Aschenbach s Ethos In Anthony
follows him everywhere, just like how Aschenbach will become obsessed with Tadzio and will follow
him everywhere (Jalic). Aschenbach sees artistic aesthetic when he looks at Tadzio, but he doesn t
look for an Apollonian form in Tadzio, he looks for a Dionysian form. Aschenbach compares Tadzio s
beauty to the Eros. Eros is a Greek god depicted as a beautiful and carefree young man. Eros is the
god of love and passionate, physical desire (Cartwright). Without warning [Eros] selects his targets
and forcefully strikes at their hearts, bringing confusion and irrepressible feelings or in the words of
Hesiod he loosens the limbs and weakens the mind (Cartwright). This Dionysian comparison suggests
that Aschenbach is giving in more and more to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aschenbach likes to think that in their relationship, he would be the boy s mentor. However, these are
not Achenbach s true feelings for Tadzio. He has fallen hopelessly in love with Tadzio and his
Apollonian qualities are trying to make him reason that he only is appreciating the stunning physical
beauty that the boy possesses. But, Aschenbach s inner Dionysian qualities are coming forward and he
is experiencing emotions that he has never experienced before. These powerful new emotions are
making him do things he would not normally do. It may have been that [Aschenbach] did not wish to
return to reality, that he was too much in love with his own intoxication (Mann 40). Aschenbach is
letting his Dionysian qualities take over and experiencing feelings and indulgences he never let
himself have before. He learns Tadzio s schedule and no longer wished for anything else than to
pursue the beloved object that inflamed him (Mann 47). Whenever Aschenbach watches Tadzio, he is
filled with happiness and awe. But when Aschenbach can t find Tadzio, he is filled with dread and
fear. Aschenbach has almost completely relaxed his ability to control his emotions and is allowing
himself to give into erratic

Red Blood Doping Essay
Red blood cells main function is to transport oxygen. They do not have a nucleus; therefore it allows
more storage for hemoglobin in red blood cells. Hemoglobin binds and transports oxygen and carbon
dioxide. The most important thing that blood doping does is increasing the amount of red blood cells
in your body. Blood doping is an illicit method of improving athletic performance by artificially
boosting the blood s ability to bring more oxygen to muscles, (Blood doping: Types, Risks, and Tests).
It improves their performance and stamina, which is completely unfair. By increasing the amount of
red blood cells, you are also increasing the amount of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is an oxygen carrying
protein in the blood. So increasing hemoglobin

My Experience Is Like A Lifelong Road
In every person s lifetime, they endure phases of life in all aspects. Going through phases of life is like
opening a door to enter a room. When a person goes through any form of entryway, they are entering
another area from the one they were in previously. Entering another phase of life is similar in many
ways to going through an entryway, as any person can exit an old phase of life and move on to another
one. My adventure to UMass Lowell is like a lifelong road, one that has taken various turns
throughout my childhood and teenage years, and has come to many stops along my most memorable
moments. Like a long roadway, my childhood and adolescent years prior to college have gone through
a long cycle of straightaways and turns. I was diagnosed with autism when I was about a year and a
half old. Ever since my diagnosis, every new moment of my life has always been something different
than the moments that have happened before. Sometimes the road of my life would always stay
straight when I would develop into a change that would remain constant for a while, and would
frequently make turns for an even better or even worse moment of my life whenever it would happen.
The path my life s road would take is dependent on the temporary or permanent changes that would
occur in me, whether physically, mentally or socially, as well as all of the defining moments that I
have been through over the years, leading up to attending UMass Lowell for the first time. From

Laurie Halse s Chains Quotes
In the book Chains by Laurie Halse, it talks about a girl named Isabel, who was born as a slave. Isabel
has faced many challenges in her life, ranging from her abusive witch like owner Madame Lockton, to
choosing whether to side with Great Britain or America. The old man Isabel calls grandfather, tells
her, Everything that stands between you and freedom is the River Jordan. When talking about about
the River Jordan, her grandfather means that Isabel must overcome her problems (the River Jordan) to
find freedom and escape from the brutality of being a slave. There are many things that get in the way
of Isabel on her quest to freedom, such as Madame Lockton, choosing sides, finding Ruth, and a
potential way Isabel can find freedom. Each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her problems could be interpreted as chains trapping and drowning her in her River Jordan. He
[Captain Campbell] couldn t take me. He would not. I was chained between two nations... I was a
ghost tied to the ground not a living soul. (182) This quote shows Isabel is stuck, not knowing what
side to favor. They used a simile comparing Isabel and the two nations to a ghost trapped in the
ground, with Isabel depicted as the ghost. It explained that Isabel is a like ghost trapped in the ground,
not with the British nor the Americans. The glowing iron streaked in front of my face like a comet...
The man pushed the hot metal against my cheek. It hissed and bubbled. Smoke curled under my nose.
They cooked me. (148) This passage clarifies when Isabel gets branded. This part of the story almost
broke Isabel s spirit to fight forward and for freedom. Not like her usual self, she followed orders
received from Madame and rarely thought about Ruth and her parents. I took a step up. Answer me,
you miserable cow. Did you sell my sister? ... She is only 5 years old. I rose another step. She is a
baby and you sold her away from me. (135) During this section of the story, this would be the first
time Isabel ever truly got mad at Madame, even enough to yell at her with a rude name. This is one of
the larger complications that add more water to Isabel s River Jordan. Ruth was Isabel s only family
left, and she sincerely did care for Ruth, but when Ruth got sold it put Isabel into despair. It was also
the cause of Isabel being branded. But Ruth did. She giggled, a sound like a small silver bell. A bell
tolling disaster. Madam Lockton... pointed her finger at us. Which one of you made that noise? Her
face flushed with rage her eyes darting back and forth between us. I did, ma am, I quickly lied...

Intellectual Property Protection and Enforcement Essay
Intellectual property (IP) is defined as property that is developed through an intellectual and creative
processes. Intellectual property falls under the category of property known as intangible rights, which
includes patents (inventions of processes, machines, manufactures, and compositions of matter),
copyrights (original artistic and literary works of), trademarks (commercial symbols), and trade
secrets ((product formulas, patterns, designs). Intellectual property rights has a significant value to
both individuals and businesses, providing in the case of large companies, over one half of their value
on return. Since intellectual property rights are so important to the U.S. economy and its citizens,
federal and state law provides ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By contrast, the constitutional basis for federal trademark law is the Commerce Clause. (Yeh, p.1,
2012).
As a result, many laws, such as the Uniform Trade Act, the Misappropriation of a Trade Secret, the
Economic Espionage Act, the Copyright Act, the Federal Patent Statute, and Lanham Act just to
mention a few, have been enacted to provide legal protection against the unauthorized use, theft, and
other violations of the rights granted by those statutes to the intellectual property owners. For instance,
the Economic Espionage Act (EEA) was enacted by congress making it a federal crime to steal
another s trade secrets for own or another s benefit. In addition, the EEA was passed to address the
ease of stealing trade secrets through computer espionage and using the internet, and to penalize those
who commit these type of crimes. Additionally, these laws allow the IP owners to recover any profits
made by the offender, recover any damages, provide severe criminal penalties, fine organizations, and
impose prison terms and injunctions to all perpetrators as a remedy.
Furthermore, intellectual property rights gives their owners or holders monopoly rights as a protective
measure for a specific period of time. For example, in 1995, congress modified the U.S. patent law to
make invention patents valid for 20 years and design patents valid for 14

Effects Of Conspiracy On Pearl Harbor
Conspiracy says FDR allowed Pearl Harbor to get attacked. Did he really let Pearl Harbor get
attacked, or did he not know at all? I do not think he really did. When he found out about the attack,
he was really calm. He acted like he did not care. People believe FDR knew of the attack because the
Americans had cracked the Japanese codes, warned of the attacks, and a general location they were
going to attack.
A series of Japanese codes broken by the U.S. Crytologist in 1920 revealed the country preparation for
war, after decoding another of message that orders a ship to be position in Pearl Harbor (Glick).
Before the raid Britain had broken Japanese codes and had key clues (Glick). They broke Japan s
diplomatic code; American officials knew about the Japan s Embassy order to destroy its codes
machines (Pearl Harbor). On October 9, 1941 the War Department decoded a Tokyo to Honolulu
dispatch instructing the consul General to divide Pearl Harbor into five areas and to tell the exact
location of American ship in that area (Perloff). The Dutch army decoded a dispatch forecasting
attacks on four areas including Hawaii (Perloff). There were a lot of different Japanese codes that were
cracked, warning of the Japanese going to attack on Pearl Harbor.
The code word go was not relayed to Hawaii (Glick). U.S. military officials picked up coded radio
broadcast that was worldwide in Japan three days before attack (Glick). The ten demands for lifting an

Oedipus As A Great Representation Of Aristotle s...
Oedipus is regarded as a great representation of Aristotle s characterization of the tragic hero. He is
able to accomplish this task because of his ability to demonstrate virtue of wisdom regardless of the
flaws and the challenges he endures.
Introduction
Aristotle demonstrated the creation of a plot in literature. The method Aristotle adopted to create a plot
involved the use of tight nexus of ignorance whereby the word Harmatia was mistranslated. The
technique of plot creation enables an author to come up with a realistic illustration to demonstrate a
real life experience. A realistic tragic story should not have tragic pleasure. The nature of a tragic story
lacking the ability to change the order of events enables the readers not to experience emotional
distancing
The way Sophocles Oedipus exemplifies the definition of a tragic hero by Aristotle s is broad.
According to Sophocles Oedipus, the definition of Aristotle hero is viewed as someone of a high
position who is of valuable qualities in terms of character and moral values. The person does not
commit mistakes of his own. Aristotle s defines tragedy as a very important act done as results of
sympathy, and fear (Peter, 2005). Tragedy hero is also described as a person of nobility during birth
that brings about certain flaws that would results to his failure. The situation is referred to as
Harmatia. It is also indicated that true tragic hero also go through peripeteia. It is also revealed

Game Of Thrones Theme Of Death
In Game of Thrones one of the few constants throughout the show is death. In the third scene of the
show someone is killed, and people are killed right up to season seven s finale. Almost everyone in
Game of Thrones is faced with at least one near death experience, and all of the characters handle it in
different ways. Being faced with death constantly leads to a couple of questions what emotions should
we face when we are about to die, and should we be afraid of death? Death eventually comes for all of
us, so why are we so afraid of it? At one point it is said There is one god and its name is death . Many
characters acknowledge they know death is coming for them, and many acknowledge their fear, but
many do not acknowledge that they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Death is a scary thing because of the unknowns that surround death. Religion often help to answer all
the unknowns because we get an end point in our life just like Heidegger said. The end point and
beginning point of our world and life help us find closure. So, to answer the question what emotions
should we face when we are about to die, and should we be afraid of death? The emotions that
surround death will always change with the circumstance, but fear is a very normal and acceptable
emption to fear, especially without a belief in an afterlife. However, it is also acceptable to not fear
death. I don t think there is actually an acceptable emotion or answer to the question that I posed. By
looking at several of the characters in Game of Thrones I noticed that all of the characters went
through different emotions right before their death. I also noticed that none of the emotions that they
felt were incorrect or not justified. Depending on age, circumstance of death, and belief in
religion/afterlife you will have different feelings towards death, but all of these feelings are valid.
There are not correct or incorrect feelings when it comes to death. While it is natural to be scared of
death, it is just as natural to accept your

Kitchenpaid Research Paper
One of the best gifts my husband ever bought me was a KitchenAid Pro Series 600 stand mixer. He
knew I wanted one but wouldn t spend the nearly $600 on myself. He researched all the brands and
models and settled on one. KitchenAid mixers are excellent to have because of their superior
durability, multiple available attachments, time saving ability, and aesthetic appeal. After two years of
heavy use I can definitely say it was an exceptional purchase. When selecting a mixer my husband did
most of his research online; he read reviews and consumer reports as well as getting background
information on the different companies. KitchenAid has been in business since 1919 and their only
product was the stand mixer. For people like my husband and I, we appreciate that they are still made
in the United States of America (Adams, 2009). KitchenAid had the best reviews and warranties out of
all the similar type mixers. If you think you don t do enough baking to warrant buying such an

North Carolina s Voting System
Living in a nation based on democracy, where a citizen s voice is the equivalent of casting a vote in
political elections, the majority of American citizens eligible to vote do not participate in elections.
The rationale behind voter non participation varies among individuals and demographic groups;
however, they all share a connection regarding their feelings towards their treatment by the country s
political system. Minority voters such as blacks and hispanics are a demographic group highly faced
with disenfranchisement in regards to political elections due to oppression. North Carolina s Voter ID
laws are a prime example of how minority voters are being shut out.
Among non voting Americans, many categorize into demographic groups that are being pushed out by
the political system in the form of misrepresentation and corruption among government officials.
According to voter trends in Who Votes? Congressional Elections and the American Electorate: 1978
2014 by Thom File, Americans with low incomes, lower levels of education, younger Americans, and
minorities are among some of the demographic groups experiencing the lowest voter rates. On the

Voter ID laws would further enforce the agenda of the republican party by lessening the strength of
democratic voters. Studies have already shown a significant link between support for voter ID and

From the Mind to the Body, Self Comes to Mind
From the Mind to the Body, Self Comes to Mind The mind emerged from the body through the
originations of conscious thoughts in an introspective manner that is accessible to the self. A
connection between mind and body eventually developed a proprietor within the thinking mind. The
neuropsychologist Antonio Damasio believes that a mind with subjectivity is a conscious mind,
otherwise one would not know of his existence, who he is, and what he thinks (Damasio, 2010). At
some point in time, the mind developed feelings towards the experience of the connected me
(Damasio, 2010). The human mind somehow collaborated with the body and began to differentiate
between their inner world with subjective experiences, and the objective ... Show more content on

Furthermore, Damasio breaks down the self as knower into three steps that together compose the
knower. These divisions are knowns as the protoself, composed of primordial feeling, the core self,
which is action driven, and the autobiographical self that incorporates social and spiritual dimensions
(Damasio, 2010). These aspects of the self are indispensable to construct the conscious mind, and
according to Damasio, one needs to account for these aspects before trying to comprehend the neural
basis of the conscious mind. Damasio and Bownds agree on the fact that human minds are shaped and
biased by their culture, and the society that they lived in (Bownds, and Damasio). Bownds explains
that the human knowledge is based on a preconceived idealization of what they already know.
Consequently, a human mind is considered circular because they are formed by the same environment
that they try to describe (Bownds, 1999). Consider the mechanic system that a zipper comprises for an
instance. The zipper slider joins together two sides of a sweater in order to close the sweater and make
it work. In the same way, the mind works along with the body. One can attribute the function of the
zipper slider to the brain and the sides to the body, but specifically the side in which the zipper, or the
brain, is attached, can represent the peripheral nervous system. In a way, the zipper slider, like

ECT as an Effective Treatment for Self Harm
ECT as an Effective Treatment for Self Harm in Extreme Cases of Mentally Unstable Patients who
Cannot Give Informed Consent There is much controversy in regards to how far a practitioner should
go to protect a patient s well being, whilst trying to adhere to their rights and consent of treatment
methods (Feldman, 1990, p. 261). The most ethical solution is to only resort to extreme methods of
treatments if the patient is clearly seen as not being mentally stable enough to provide the right
judgement call, and if they are in a life threatening situation in which they could potentially harm
themselves or others. In cases where patients are not mentally stable enough to give their consent,

Research by Kellner et al. has also shown how ETC can be effective for behavioural disorders, but in
this case, for severe depression. Kellner defends this treatment explaining that many controversies
have arose regarding ECT because of misrepresentations of it in the media and lack of knowledge of
the logistics of its mechanisms. Patient, Ms. A. , a 72 year old woman became seriously depressed and
was not responding to any psychotherapy or drugs pertaining to clinical depression. She was barely
able to function properly, and after a course of eight ECT sessions of unilateral ultrabrief pulse
treatments , her score on the Hamilton Depression Rating scale, ranked out of 24, went from 38 to 6.
She was soon able to continue her usual daily activities (Kellner, 2012, p. 1 2). Miss. A s results from
ETC showed that this method of treatment greatly improved her previously severe depression.
Depression can lead to attempts at suicide as well as self harming ones self, so extreme punitive
treatments are better to pursue than allowing the chance of a patient taking ones own life.(Feldman
1990, p. 263). It is emphasized that consent of patients that are legally incompetent for medical
decision making should have a legal guardian to decide for them (Kellner 2012, p. 5). Thus, ETC has

Essay on The Global Positioning System
The Global Positioning System The global positioning system (GPS) is a satellite based navigation
system, consisting of a network of 24 orbiting satellites travelling on six different orbital paths. These
satellites, referred to as NAVSTAR satellites, are constantly moving, making two complete orbits
around earth per day. The first GPS satellite was launched in February, 1978. Satellites now weight
approximately 1 tonne, and are about 5 metres across with extended solar panels. GPS needs at least
24 satellites to provide full coverage of every point on the earth, all the time. To calculate one position
on the earth, at least 3 satellites are needed. Currently, there are 28 working ... Show more content on

The time difference then determines how far away the particular satellite is. Through trigonometry,
with a minimum of three satellites, the GPS receiver is then able to determine a latitude/longitude
position, and with a further satellite, also the altitude. Through constant updates of your position, a
receiver can also provide accurate measures of speed and direction of travel. The accuracy of the GPS
system used to be hindered principally by a source of position error called Selection Availability (SA),
intentionally imposing inaccuracies of up to 100m on civilian GPS by the US Defense, the idea being
that SA would prevent hostile terrorist organisations holding the maximum power of GPS. Some other
factors affect accuracy the relative positions of each satellite in the sky, multi pathing (where the
satellite reception is blocked/reflected by buildings, obstructions of the like) and propagation delay
due to atmospheric effects. Some internal clock errors may also occur. In order to improve accuracy,
one can implement correctional information and computing, as well as using more sophisticated radio
reception techniques. A process known as Differential GPS (DGPS) employs a second receiver at a
fixed location to compute corrections to the GPS satellite

Prejudice Is Not A Good Thing
Wayne W. Dyer once said, Judgments prevent us from seeing the good that lies beyond appearances.
Everyone is guilty of judging someone based on how they look or where they come from, before

a good thing is being prejudice against certain types of people. Being an extremely prejudice person

Either way, cell phone manufacturers and sellers aspire to create marketable products that hit sales
channels quickly
This reality is attributed to the very nature of cellular technology s evolution. From the beginning,
mobile handset manufacturers and wireless service providers were actively engaged in building and
installing infrastructure in emerging markets where land line communication was limited.
While they recognized the market demand for wireless technology, they also saw the economic
potential for outsourcing manufacturing in these areas. Now many of these companies are offshoring
product design and development activities in emerging markets such as China.
China has a highly skilled engineering workforce and labor is cheap. In addition, it is a competitive
market, explains Vande Vate. Cellular phone companies in China add more new users in one month
than some do in specific U.S. markets in one year.
U.S. headquartered Motorola, by example, currently employs 2,000 workers at 16 R amp;D facilities
across China.
The diverse mix of cell phones and mobile devices currently hitting retail channels places
considerable importance on how and where manufacturers perform final assemblage and
customization. This, in turn, places additional stress on the supply chain, and often leads companies to
seek third party assistance.
As evidence of this increasing complexity, the outsourced manufacturing and

The Impact Of Media On The Reception, Perception And...
This essay I will attempt to demonstrate the fundamental influence that media has on its audience in
regards to the exercise of their democratic rights and obligations. I am going to analyse two socio
political phenomena, both prove the relevance of the media on the reception, perception and
comprehension of information, crucial for voters to make their democratic decisions. For this purpose
I will first depict/ describe the interaction between the media and the Argentine presidencies of Nestor
Kirchner (NK) and his wife, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (CFK), in power between 2003 and 2015,
detailing the hostile strategies they led so as to manipulate the disclosure of information and the public
opinion. I will then briefly contrast the Argentinean phenomenon with the one taking place in the
United Kingdom during the BREXIT campaign; demonstrating how voters fell victim of an
irresponsible performance both from the part of politicians and from the media, who both built up
divisiveness and secession rather than consensus. Finally, after weighing/ considering research facts, I
will present my own personal perspective, drawing a conclusion of the situation as a whole when
assessed under the light of the theoretical work of D. Croteau and W. Hoynes in their book The
Business of Media. Croteau pointed out society depends on a shared collective vision, saying it

Trump s blunt personality, he must be careful to not cross a line that he won t be able to come back

One of Trump s most memorable moments occurred during the Republican debate (Stewart, 2015).
Trump came off as if he was above everyone else and that the whole debate was a waste of his time.
Constant facial expressions and hand gestures reflecting annoyance seemed to emphasize this. As the
other candidates spoke, Trump had a silent reaction to every comment, at times reaching out and
taping the other candidates on their arms. Though throughout, Trump constantly did long and slow
nods, this typically means that the person is listening and wants you to continue speaking but also
combining it with long and slow blinks means that Trump was trying to block the person speaking at
the moment out. He was disinterested and felt too superior to be listening to all of it (Arechaederra,
2014). Here we can see typical styles of nonverbal communication that Trump is giving off while in
debates and interviews. He clearly has the personality that hints that he has a believed status of
hierarchy and that everyone s opinion is not even worth listening to. Because this is now seen as
normal for Trump to act in this disrespecting manner, any change to his behavior would be seen as

Cesar Chavez Influence On Migrant Workers
Labor unions have been instrumental in the lives of workers throughout American history, and have
led to important advances in the American workforce. Throughout history there have been patterns of
exploitation of immigrant workers by businesses in order to increase profits; the Mexican migrant
workers of southern California are the most recent historical group to fall into this pattern of
exploitation mostly from their lack of organization. Cesar E. Chavez was a great organizer and leader

Chavez wanted to help the community that he came from, as well as others like it. The migrant worker
community became his main focus, this resulted his creation of the UFW in 1962 (Chavez
Foundation). His earlier life as a migrant worker would be a strong influence for attaining better
working conditions for those workers. Early in Chavez s life, he was exposed to the hardships of
migrant working. When Chavez was 10 his family was forced from their home in Yuma, Arizona
because of back taxes and because of the depression, his family couldn t pay the payments (Castillo
and Garcia, 7). Chavez began migrant work when he was 14, and the injustices had a memorable
effect. Migrant workers were often exploited because of their lack of organization in a uniform union
group, something that Chavez would eventually change. In future years the UFW would give migrant
workers a voice in the conditions under which they were living and working. Strikes, boycotts, and
other nonviolent protests were essential to the UFW s ability to attain advancements in the Mexican
American workplace. Though strikes previous to 1964 were often unsuccessful because of the Bracero
program that was implemented by both the United States and Mexican governments. Farm owners
encouraged this program because of labor shortages during wartime, but by the 1950 s the Bracero
workers were being used to undercut wages and break strikes by the migrant workers. This caused

Racial Tension In Strange Fruit
According to the NAACP article in the late 19th century racial tension grew throughout the United
States. More of this tension was noticeable in the Southern parts of the United States. Lynchings were
becoming a popular way of resolving some of the anger that whites had in relation to the free blacks.
From 1882 1968, 4,743 lynching s occurred in the United States. Of these people that were lynched
3,446 were black ( History of Lynchings, 2017).Many poets and writers took those tragedy s and
decided to put their feelings into writing. Bitter Fruit later turned into Strange Fruit, was written by a
Jewish high school English teacher from the Bronx and a member of the American Communist Party.
This astonishing writers name is Abel Meeropol. In 1937, Meeropol saw a photograph of Thomas
Shipp and Abram Smith being lynched in the South. The two gentleman was accused of rape towards
a white lady and was sent to jail falsely for it. A number of people broke into the jail with
sledgehammers to get the two men to beat and lynch them. Meeropol decided to write a poem about
the disbelief that came across his eyes. Meeropol wrote the poem as a protest poem. Meeropol recalled
how the photograph haunted me for days and inspired the writing of the poem ( Strange Fruit, 2017).
He wanted to expose the American racism basing it on the lynching of African Americans. Meeropols
work was so stunning it brought major attention to the New York lawmakers. The New York

The Role Of Cybersecurity And Its Effects On The World
Cybersecurity Cybersecurity has only been around for a short time. In the short time it s been around,
it s gone from a simple application process in security, to one of the most complicated things to get
right in order to protect the internet. In the late 80 s the very first computer worm was created by
Robert Morris. He released it into the internet in the early 90 s. With it, he shut down large portions of
the internet. (Infosecurity Magazine) Back then, the internet didn t play a large role in everyone s
lives, as it does today. But with that breach, it alerted people that we needed to come up with
something to keep that from happening again, hence cybersecurity was born. Since then, cybersecurity

job experience. (Cyber Degrees) Since it doesn t take a college degree, it only takes about two or four
years of experience in the field to achieve this position. If you do take a college route, it ll be 4 6 years

ways to learn. Some teach themselves how to code, others use training courses on the internet. I have

On Liberty Essay
Analysis amp; Critique of
J.S. Mill s On Liberty
The perception of liberty has been an issue that has bewildered the human race for a long time. It
seems with every aspiring leader comes a new definition of liberty, some more realistic than others.
We have seen, though, that some tend to have a grasp of what true liberty is. One of these scholars was
the English philosopher and economist J.S. Mill. Mill s On Liberty provided a great example of what,
in his opinion, liberty is and how it is to be protected. In this essay we will examine Mill s ideals
concerning liberty and point out a few things he may not have been realistic about.

Not to silence them in favor of having no opposition. All that is accomplished by this is the
handicapping of society, for it is true in every aspect of life that the only way to improve is to go
against opposition and to learn from it. Along these lines it would make sense that the most important
ideas out there are the unpopular ones because these are the issues that are being neglected.
The protection of this quot;individuality quot; poses a problem. What causes harm and what ultimately
leads to good? When should government step in and when should it let things be? Knowing where that
line is tough. Mill s answer to this is that society has jurisdiction over every aspect of behavior that,
quot;affects prejudicially the interests of others. quot; More specifically society has no interest in the
aspects of one s life that affect only the individual acting, or others, for that matter, that are affect at
their own consent. Society has no right to keep a person from doing with his life what they wish, and
it is stupid to do so their own good for nobody will every truly know what someone else aspires to do.
Though Mill rejects the concept of the social contract he does believe that people do have obligations
to the society in exchange for the protection of their freedom. And if one acts in a manner that harms
the society as a whole then they are subject to punishment. Not

Gay Adoptions Essay
There are basically two types of adoption agencies: Public agencies that are usually supported by
public funding and are run by the state and Private agencies that are licensed by the state, but run
privately (Reference 99). Regardless of the type of agency, the state has some say in their operations,
and if the state has a ban of gay adoptions, then the agencies will have to abide. In 1977, Florida
passed a civil rights ordinance making sexual orientation discrimination illegal in Dade County. In
response to the ordinance s creation, a campaign themed Save Our Children was created and led by

All Quiet On The Western Front Earth Quotes
In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque, the central symbol is the earth. Earth
represents life, death and perverse nature. It ties to other symbols such as dirt, ground, trenches, and
plants. Earth represents life because it provided protection and shelter to keep the soldiers alive..
Basically, when the soldiers cling on to earth, they are basically clinging on to life because earth
provides them with the necessary essentials to be sustain life such as food which gives them life. Earth
is the only thing that the soldiers can rely on to keep them alive in the war. (?) Ironically, the earth also

Representation Of The House Of Representatives
The legislature of the United States consists of two houses, the Senate and the House of
Representatives. The bicameral system was created by the Founding Fathers in order to carry out one
of the most imperative functions of Congress, representation amongst other function such as
legislation, deliberation and scrutiny. The Senate ensures each state is equally represented with two
congressmen, equally the House of Representatives also has to carry out the function of representation
but its representatives unlike the Senate are proportioned to the population of the states for example
California has 55 representatives however Alaska has 1. Even though representation is an important
and well known function of the legislature the extent to which it is carried out can be argued to have
declined in the subsequent years due to factors such as the expansion of the population. The role of
representation was intended to be carried out in 13 states under the Founding Fathers however the
increase to 50 has made this function increasingly difficult. The creation of the House of
Representatives ensured the function of representation would be carried out as the house was
proportioned to equally represent all the states. Having a set number of representatives in one states
according to population ensures that the voices of that state s population can be heard effectively. The
Framers choice of a bicameral system was in part a choice to leverage two different representational
schemes. The

Scarlet Letter Heroine Quotes
Hester is Woman: Hear Her Roar
In the 1850 s, America was undergoing a massive internal changes via the industrial revolution. With
this new era, American culture was drastically changed as women started to take a more prominent
role in American society. In his novel The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne attempts to stimulate
this change by illustrating the positive influence of a strong female character in a Puritanical society
through his heroine, Hester Prynne, by putting her in a scandalous situation capable of drawing out the
worst in people.

An early example of this is how she handles her service to others. Even while being harassed by the
general public, Hester Prynne continues to make these sacrifices which are only rewarded with hatred
and insults. Hester foregoes her own pleasures, except for the lavish decoration of her infant, and
bestows the rest of her wealth on wretches less miserable than herself (Hawthorne 75). She even
continues to aid the poor despite the fact that they not unfrequently insulted the hand that fed them
(Hawthorne 75). Despite the fact that it was in Hester s best interests not to aid those around her, she
continued to do so. This evidences her sheer strength of character as the heroine of the novel. Hester s
loyalty is also magnified by her selfless nature, as her willingness to sacrifice lends itself well to
remaining loyal to others. Hester also selflessly bears the burden of the entire community s sin. Hester
perceives the hidden sin in other hearts around her and because her sin has been uncovered, she alone
bears the penalty for deviancy (Taylor). A prime example of this is once again her refusal to reveal
Dimmesdale as her child s father. In resisting their efforts to uncover him, Hester states to the clergy: I
might endure his agony, as well as mine! (Hawthorne 63). Here, her loyalty is greatly supplemented
by her willingness to suffer in place

Teens And The Media Essay
Portrayal of Teens in the Media
The media, that giant intimidating creation has taken the stereotypes of teens, the way people view

point in time portrays teenagers as generally bad. Well to be honest, not generally bad, but mostly
horrible. We are seen as the cause for alarm and trouble in society. The media portrays us as manic
delinquents with no solid past and no concrete future.
The main points of teenagers that are warped into a lie are appearance and generalization of actions.

Teenagers are seen as immature and with no future. But are we not more mature than our adult role
models by not generalizing about them?
I admit that I personally know a few people that have made some choices that have resulted in jail
sentences and other consequences. Just because there are a few teenagers like that does not mean that
we are all alike in that aspect. Another misconception about teenagers is that the inner city or black
teens are involved in gangs. This is one of the lowest and cheapest misinterpretations. Generalizing by
race and where people live (and in turn generalizing because of social class) makes me sick. I see this
as a pitiful portrayal and a complete lie.
The media also portrays teens as spending their time doing nothing. They put us in shows and in
commercials in groups of three or four, complete with the previously discussed tattoos and loose
pants, just sitting around doing nothing. They send the message across that we are basically just a
quot;crime waiting to happen. quot; Which is not the case. About 98% of the teens I know responsibly
arrange and map out their plans. Very few of them sit around with no job waiting to do something
wrong. Another part of this misinterpretation is the attitude of teenagers in general. The media
portrays general teenage attitude (which is portrayed as hating all forms of authority and not wanting
to listen to anyone) as going hand in hand with crime and delinquency.

So, agriculture has to do with that fact:
Fast food chains serve the same food over the world. That means they serve the same French fries
made from the same type of potatoes and the same salads made from the same type of lettuce and

quite different from traditional local ingredients. Local farmers abandon their traditional crops and try
to grow food needed for the very limited international menus. This reduces diversity of local crops

him: Don t you ever get the feeling that all your life is going by and you re not taking advantage of it?
Do you realize that you ve lived nearly half the time you have to live already? and he answers, Yes,
every once in a while. (p.30). So, alcohol was an escape from his problems and he said: Under the
wine I lost disgusted feeling and was happy (p.150). When he is drunk, life seems better and easier.
But when he wakes up next morning, he regrets it, but he never tries to change his life, he just accepts
it as it is. Hemingway presented Jake and Brett to portray people with lost believes and nothingness.
Both of them accepted their lives as it was and did not try to change anything. Hemingway is not
optimistic about the future, for him and his characters the meaning of life is lost. Similarly to
Hemingway, Kerouac shows readers how people wanted to escape reality, as to forget about war
young people traveled across the country in order to find the lost meaning of the life and have fun.
Kerouac chooses a different path and describes the characters of the

Belize Barrier Reef Essay
Glover s Reef is a part of the second largest reef system in the world, the Belize Reef. In recent years,
mostly due to tourism growth and the respective development for the tourists, ocean pollution has
damaged many of species that live in Belize Reef. While the government has imposed a national
reservation on the area that protects it from human destruction, it simply has not had the effect
expected. On the Glover Reef, a research facility was created to gain a better understand of coral in
the area and the best way to protect it. The hopeful future is that the research project gives scientist
insight on how to protect the entirety of the Belize Barrier Reef System.
Belize Barrier Reef System
The Belize Barrier Reef consists of multiple coral reefs on the coast of Belize. This reef is known as
the most remarkable reef in the West Indies due to its large diversity of organisms and ecosystems.
(Darwin). It is home to around 70 hard coral species, 36 soft coral species, and over 500 species of
fish. The second largest coral reef system in the entire world is also the top tourist destination in all of
Belize and is attractive for scuba diving and snorkeling. The 260 meter reef attracts around 260,000
visitors on an annual basis. Many tourists enjoy scuba diving near the reefs especially at the Blue
Hole, which is an underwater sinkhole. The Mayans and the current people used the area for fishing as
a variety of fish species live in the water. Due to the tourist

Persuasive Essay On Commitment In Love
You are a man eater, right? You are a fun lay, a good night, but commitment is not for you. You are
fierce independence and unavailability. You prefer your own company because, you annoy yourself,
but when you re alone at least no one else has that power. When did this become who you are? Did
you get hurt? A million times? Just once? Was that too much for your heart made of tender flesh?
What made you this person? Are you afraid? Are you just terrified because you fall in love with
someone the instant they do anything that makes your heart drop? To combat the possible pain, you
swear you do not love anyone or anything at all. If you cannot be the person who does not get
heartbroken once a week then you are going to be the person who does not have a heart to break.
Cold exterior, dark edge, you never let anyone closer than ten feet to you. You maintain your mystery
and posterity by making sure no one ever crosses you. The best way to do that is by establishing your
firm no bull policy early. God knows you are terrified. You want to be the person with your heart on
your sleeve. You would love to be someone who believes in the sentiment of it is better to have loved
and lost than never loved at all but you cannot bring yourself to do it. You cannot handle the
destruction. You cannot bear the weight of having to rebuild yourself every single time. You cannot
carry the cross of your own fragility.
People ask about why you are like this. They ask why you haven t found anyone. You say something
like my standards are just really high. On some level, that is absolutely true. You will not let just
anyone in, if you are going to stop shooting them down before they have a chance, they really have to
be something special. The problem is not that you do not let just anyone in, you just do not let anyone
in.
The scary part about being a damaged heart is that when you meet someone new, your defenses are at
an all time high. Constantly on ready to run, always testing to see if they can handle your damage. You
push away before anyone has a chance to get close. Some make it, though. It takes a while but you
start to believe them when they say they are there to stay. You tell them you are a storm and they say
they love

The United States Prison Population
The United States prison population has grown tremendously from approximately 500,000 to 2.3
million people in just three decades. We (U.S) spend almost $70 billion annually to place adults in
prison and jails, to confine youth in detention centers, and to supervise 7.3 million individuals on
probation and parole. California has the largest prison population in the country, with more than
170,000 individuals behind bars. In Los Angeles, more than half of current parolees live in
neighborhoods that are home to less than 20 percent of the city s adult residents. More than a billion
dollars are spent every year to incarcerate people from these communities. At the same time, as of
spring 2010, the Los Angeles Unified School District was projecting a deficit of $640 million in the
2010 11 academic year. As a result, district officials were planning to raise class sizes and lay off
thousands of teachers and other school based staff.
40% of students expelled from schools each year are black.
70% of students are involved in in school arrest.
2 x black and latino students are twice as likely to not graduate than white students
68% of all males in federal prison do not have a high school diploma
The yearly cost to incarcerate one child is $88,000 and the yearly cost of public education for one
child is $10,600
The school to prison pipeline is exactly how it sounds it is a system that pushes students out of
classrooms and into jail.

Coyotes Migration Patterns
In North Carolina, there are many wondrous and awe inspiring creatures that roam free and graze the
mountain ranges and prairies. Creatures like the black bear, which rove and dominate the mountains of
the Carolina s sometimes venture down and cause a stir in populated areas. The Coyote is no different.
The Coyote, otherwise known as the Canis Latrans, is a very versatile and adaptive creature. Due to
urbanization and migration patterns, these creatures are now all over the continental United States.
Coyotes are no stranger to urban areas due to the rapid deterioration of their habitats. In lieu to those
migration patterns, North Carolina sees coyotes regularly in neighboring counties that span from the
western boarder to the eastern coast ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though they have similar reproductive behaviors as most mammals, Coyotes pass some basic instincts
to their pups while in development and re enforce them when they are born. Debra A. Carlson and
Eric M. Gese, working for the Department of Wildland Resources at Utah State University, studied the
reproductive system and cycles of these adapt creatures. Debra A. Carlson and Eric M.Gese explain
how the coyote goes through stages, like humans, before reproduction can begin. They explain how
the coyote finds a suitable mate, conceives, gestates her pups and then provides parental care for a
certain amount of time before independency occurs and the cycle starts all over again (Carlson Gese,

Community Oriented Policing
Community Oriented Policing
In spite of the fact that the United States still exceeds many other industrialized nations in overall
crime and violent crime, it has been effective in decreasing its crime rate, particularly during the
1990s. While some coalitions have attributed this positive development to changes in socio
demographic trends and rigid enforcement approaches, one coalition highlights the success of the
community oriented policing and problem oriented policing in eradicating the root causes of crime
(Stephens, 2003). While I don t believe that community oriented policing in the sole cause of
decreased crime rates I do believe that it has its positive and negative sides.
Community oriented policing is based on the complete ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem with this model is that it is difficult for police departments to dedicate officer to public
relations while there are serious crimes that need to be prevented. The idea of the public reporting
crimes to the police in a community meeting is acceptable but in many cases especially with the
current economic crisis that we are facing, it is impossible for police departments to have officers
strictly assigned to community police. As discussed earlier without full cooperation from both sides
the practice of community police is ineffective.
The community policing plan created by the City of Aberdeen in Maryland provides a good example
of how the partnership between the police and members of the community can be effective for dealing
with crimes. In order to promote the police and community s adoption of these new roles, the Mid
Atlantic Regional Community Policing Institute (MARCPI), along with the Johns Hopkins University,
will offer training to the police and the community. Both the police and the community have to learn
how to change their thinking processes in order to deal with the problems in a proactive way, instead
of the conventional reactive fashion. Through the training sessions, the members of the community,
the police officers and city department heads will acquire the skills and knowledge for addressing
problems. The involvement of the city department heads and other

  • 2. Aschenbach s Ethos In Anthony follows him everywhere, just like how Aschenbach will become obsessed with Tadzio and will follow him everywhere (Jalic). Aschenbach sees artistic aesthetic when he looks at Tadzio, but he doesn t look for an Apollonian form in Tadzio, he looks for a Dionysian form. Aschenbach compares Tadzio s beauty to the Eros. Eros is a Greek god depicted as a beautiful and carefree young man. Eros is the god of love and passionate, physical desire (Cartwright). Without warning [Eros] selects his targets and forcefully strikes at their hearts, bringing confusion and irrepressible feelings or in the words of Hesiod he loosens the limbs and weakens the mind (Cartwright). Aschenbach likes to think that in their relationship, he would be the boy s mentor. However, these are not Achenbach s true feelings for Tadzio. He has fallen hopelessly in love with Tadzio and his Apollonian qualities are trying to make him reason that he only is appreciating the stunning physical beauty that the boy possesses. But, Aschenbach s inner Dionysian qualities are coming forward and he is experiencing emotions that he has never experienced before. These powerful new emotions are making him do things he would not normally do. It may have been that [Aschenbach] did not wish to return to reality, that he was too much in love with his own intoxication (Mann 40). Aschenbach is letting his Dionysian qualities take over and experiencing feelings and indulgences he never let himself have before. He learns Tadzio s schedule and no longer wished for anything else than to pursue the beloved object that inflamed him (Mann 47). Hemoglobin binds and transports oxygen and carbon dioxide. The most important thing that blood doping does is increasing the amount of red blood cells in your body. Blood doping is an illicit method of improving athletic performance by artificially boosting the blood s ability to bring more oxygen to muscles, (Blood doping: Types, Risks, and Tests). When a person goes through any form of entryway, they are entering another area from the one they were in previously. Entering another phase of life is similar in many ways to going through an entryway, as any person can exit an old phase of life and move on to another one. My adventure to UMass Lowell is like a lifelong road, one that has taken various turns throughout my childhood and teenage years, and has come to many stops along my most memorable moments. Like a long roadway, my childhood and adolescent years prior to college have gone through a long cycle of straightaways and turns. I was diagnosed with autism when I was about a year and a half old. Ever since my diagnosis, every new moment of my life has always been something different than the moments that have happened before. Sometimes the road of my life would always stay straight when I would develop into a change that would remain constant for a while, and would frequently make turns for an even better or even worse moment of my life whenever it would happen. The path my life s road would take is dependent on the temporary or permanent changes that would occur in me, whether physically, mentally or socially, as well as all of the defining moments that I have been through over the years, leading up to attending UMass Lowell for the first time. • 6. Laurie Halse s Chains Quotes In the book Chains by Laurie Halse, it talks about a girl named Isabel, who was born as a slave. Isabel has faced many challenges in her life, ranging from her abusive witch like owner Madame Lockton, to choosing whether to side with Great Britain or America. The old man Isabel calls grandfather, tells her, Everything that stands between you and freedom is the River Jordan. When talking about about the River Jordan, her grandfather means that Isabel must overcome her problems (the River Jordan) to find freedom and escape from the brutality of being a slave. There are many things that get in the way of Isabel on her quest to freedom, such as Madame Lockton, choosing sides, finding Ruth, and a potential way Isabel can find freedom. Each ... They used a simile comparing Isabel and the two nations to a ghost trapped in the ground, with Isabel depicted as the ghost. It explained that Isabel is a like ghost trapped in the ground, not with the British nor the Americans. The glowing iron streaked in front of my face like a comet... The man pushed the hot metal against my cheek. It hissed and bubbled. Smoke curled under my nose. They cooked me. (148) This passage clarifies when Isabel gets branded. This part of the story almost broke Isabel s spirit to fight forward and for freedom. Not like her usual self, she followed orders received from Madame and rarely thought about Ruth and her parents. I took a step up. Answer me, you miserable cow. Did you sell my sister? ... She is only 5 years old. I rose another step. She is a baby and you sold her away from me. (135) During this section of the story, this would be the first time Isabel ever truly got mad at Madame, even enough to yell at her with a rude name. This is one of the larger complications that add more water to Isabel s River Jordan. Ruth was Isabel s only family left, and she sincerely did care for Ruth, but when Ruth got sold it put Isabel into despair. It was also the cause of Isabel being branded. But Ruth did. She giggled, a sound like a small silver bell. A bell tolling disaster. Madam Lockton... pointed her finger at us. Which one of you made that noise? North Carolina s Voting System Living in a nation based on democracy, where a citizen s voice is the equivalent of casting a vote in political elections, the majority of American citizens eligible to vote do not participate in elections. From the Mind to the Body, Self Comes to Mind From the Mind to the Body, Self Comes to Mind The mind emerged from the body through the originations of conscious thoughts in an introspective manner that is accessible to the self. A connection between mind and body eventually developed a proprietor within the thinking mind. The neuropsychologist Antonio Damasio believes that a mind with subjectivity is a conscious mind, otherwise one would not know of his existence, who he is, and what he thinks (Damasio, 2010). These divisions are knowns as the protoself, composed of primordial feeling, the core self, which is action driven, and the autobiographical self that incorporates social and spiritual dimensions (Damasio, 2010). These aspects of the self are indispensable to construct the conscious mind, and according to Damasio, one needs to account for these aspects before trying to comprehend the neural basis of the conscious mind. Damasio and Bownds agree on the fact that human minds are shaped and biased by their culture, and the society that they lived in (Bownds, and Damasio). Bownds explains that the human knowledge is based on a preconceived idealization of what they already know. Consequently, a human mind is considered circular because they are formed by the same environment that they try to describe (Bownds, 1999). The most ethical solution is to only resort to extreme methods of treatments if the patient is clearly seen as not being mentally stable enough to provide the right judgement call, and if they are in a life threatening situation in which they could potentially harm themselves or others. Patient, Ms. A. , a 72 year old woman became seriously depressed and was not responding to any psychotherapy or drugs pertaining to clinical depression. She was barely able to function properly, and after a course of eight ECT sessions of unilateral ultrabrief pulse treatments , her score on the Hamilton Depression Rating scale, ranked out of 24, went from 38 to 6. The accuracy of the GPS system used to be hindered principally by a source of position error called Selection Availability (SA), intentionally imposing inaccuracies of up to 100m on civilian GPS by the US Defense, the idea being that SA would prevent hostile terrorist organisations holding the maximum power of GPS. For this purpose I will first depict/ describe the interaction between the media and the Argentine presidencies of Nestor Kirchner (NK) and his wife, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (CFK), in power between 2003 and 2015, detailing the hostile strategies they led so as to manipulate the disclosure of information and the public opinion. Bitter Fruit later turned into Strange Fruit, was written by a Jewish high school English teacher from the Bronx and a member of the American Communist Party. This astonishing writers name is Abel Meeropol. In 1937, Meeropol saw a photograph of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith being lynched in the South. The two gentleman was accused of rape towards a white lady and was sent to jail falsely for it. A number of people broke into the jail with sledgehammers to get the two men to beat and lynch them. Meeropol decided to write a poem about the disbelief that came across his eyes. Meeropol wrote the poem as a protest poem. Meeropol recalled how the photograph haunted me for days and inspired the writing of the poem ( Strange Fruit, 2017). He wanted to expose the American racism basing it on the lynching of African Americans. Meeropols work was so stunning it brought major attention to the New York lawmakers. It seems with every aspiring leader comes a new definition of liberty, some more realistic than others. We have seen, though, that some tend to have a grasp of what true liberty is. One of these scholars was the English philosopher and economist J.S. Mill. Mill s On Liberty provided a great example of what, in his opinion, liberty is and how it is to be protected. The protection of this quot;individuality quot; poses a problem. What causes harm and what ultimately leads to good? When should government step in and when should it let things be? The bicameral system was created by the Founding Fathers in order to carry out one of the most imperative functions of Congress, representation amongst other function such as legislation, deliberation and scrutiny. The Senate ensures each state is equally represented with two congressmen, equally the House of Representatives also has to carry out the function of representation but its representatives unlike the Senate are proportioned to the population of the states for example California has 55 representatives however Alaska has 1. Even though representation is an important and well known function of the legislature the extent to which it is carried out can be argued to have declined in the subsequent years due to factors such as the expansion of the population. The role of representation was intended to be carried out in 13 states under the Founding Fathers however the increase to 50 has made this function increasingly difficult. The creation of the House of Representatives ensured the function of representation would be carried out as the house was proportioned to equally represent all the states. Are you just terrified because you fall in love with someone the instant they do anything that makes your heart drop? To combat the possible pain, you swear you do not love anyone or anything at all. If you cannot be the person who does not get heartbroken once a week then you are going to be the person who does not have a heart to break. Cold exterior, dark edge, you never let anyone closer than ten feet to you. You maintain your mystery and posterity by making sure no one ever crosses you. The best way to do that is by establishing your firm no bull policy early. God knows you are terrified. You want to be the person with your heart on your sleeve. You would love to be someone who believes in the sentiment of it is better to have loved and lost than never loved at all but you cannot bring yourself to do it. You cannot handle the destruction. You cannot bear the weight of having to rebuild yourself every single time. You cannot carry the cross of your own fragility. People ask about why you are like this. They ask why you haven t found anyone. You say something like my standards are just really high. On some level, that is absolutely true. You will not let just anyone in, if you are going to stop shooting them down before they have a chance, they really have to be something special. The problem is not that you do not let just anyone in, you just do not let anyone in. The scary part about being a damaged heart is that when you meet someone new, your defenses are at an all time high. Constantly on ready to run, always testing to see if they can handle your damage. You push away before anyone has a chance to get close. Some make it, though. It takes a while but you start to believe them when they say they are there to stay. You tell them you are a storm and they say they love ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. The United States Prison Population The United States prison population has grown tremendously from approximately 500,000 to 2.3 million people in just three decades. We (U.S) spend almost $70 billion annually to place adults in prison and jails, to confine youth in detention centers, and to supervise 7.3 million individuals on probation and parole. California has the largest prison population in the country, with more than 170,000 individuals behind bars. In Los Angeles, more than half of current parolees live in neighborhoods that are home to less than 20 percent of the city s adult residents. More than a billion dollars are spent every year to incarcerate people from these communities. At the same time, as of spring 2010, the Los Angeles Unified School District was projecting a deficit of $640 million in the 2010 11 academic year. As a result, district officials were planning to raise class sizes and lay off thousands of teachers and other school based staff. 40% of students expelled from schools each year are black. 70% of students are involved in in school arrest. 2 x black and latino students are twice as likely to not graduate than white students 68% of all males in federal prison do not have a high school diploma The yearly cost to incarcerate one child is $88,000 and the yearly cost of public education for one child is $10,600 The school to prison pipeline is exactly how it sounds it is a system that pushes students out of classrooms and into jail. • 44. Coyotes Migration Patterns In North Carolina, there are many wondrous and awe inspiring creatures that roam free and graze the mountain ranges and prairies. Creatures like the black bear, which rove and dominate the mountains of the Carolina s sometimes venture down and cause a stir in populated areas. The Coyote is no different. The Coyote, otherwise known as the Canis Latrans, is a very versatile and adaptive creature. Due to urbanization and migration patterns, these creatures are now all over the continental United States. Coyotes are no stranger to urban areas due to the rapid deterioration of their habitats. In lieu to those migration patterns, North Carolina sees coyotes regularly in neighboring counties that span from the western boarder to the eastern coast ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though they have similar reproductive behaviors as most mammals, Coyotes pass some basic instincts to their pups while in development and re enforce them when they are born. Debra A. Carlson and Eric M. Gese, working for the Department of Wildland Resources at Utah State University, studied the reproductive system and cycles of these adapt creatures. Debra A. Carlson and Eric M.Gese explain how the coyote goes through stages, like humans, before reproduction can begin. They explain how the coyote finds a suitable mate, conceives, gestates her pups and then provides parental care for a certain amount of time before independency occurs and the cycle starts all over again (Carlson Gese, ... • 45. Community Oriented Policing Community Oriented Policing In spite of the fact that the United States still exceeds many other industrialized nations in overall crime and violent crime, it has been effective in decreasing its crime rate, particularly during the 1990s. While some coalitions have attributed this positive development to changes in socio demographic trends and rigid enforcement approaches, one coalition highlights the success of the community oriented policing and problem oriented policing in eradicating the root causes of crime (Stephens, 2003). While I don t believe that community oriented policing in the sole cause of decreased crime rates I do believe that it has its positive and negative sides. Community oriented policing is based on the complete ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The problem with this model is that it is difficult for police departments to dedicate officer to public relations while there are serious crimes that need to be prevented. The idea of the public reporting crimes to the police in a community meeting is acceptable but in many cases especially with the current economic crisis that we are facing, it is impossible for police departments to have officers strictly assigned to community police. As discussed earlier without full cooperation from both sides the practice of community police is ineffective. The community policing plan created by the City of Aberdeen in Maryland provides a good example of how the partnership between the police and members of the community can be effective for dealing with crimes. In order to promote the police and community s adoption of these new roles, the Mid Atlantic Regional Community Policing Institute (MARCPI), along with the Johns Hopkins University, will offer training to the police and the community. Both the police and the community have to learn how to change their thinking processes in order to deal with the problems in a proactive way, instead of the conventional reactive fashion. Through the training sessions, the members of the community, the police officers and city department heads will acquire the skills and knowledge for addressing problems. The involvement of the city department heads and other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
