age group could see certain topics would fall under censorship. This would limit access to certain
people because some authority believes it inappropriate for them. Even the ALA, American Library
Association, agree that a rating system would be censorship (Koeblar). Authors would also censor
themselves to fit within a certain demographic. This is already happening in the movie business where
there is a rating system in place. The 2006 documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated argued that an
adult NC 17 rating essentially kills a movie s chance of being profitable, and countless filmmakers
have had to edit their movies in order to score a lower rating... (Koeblar). Imagine The Hunger Games
Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. This series is aimed towards late middle school and high school students,
but the themes are pretty dark. If Suzanne wanted to get a similar message across with a rating for
thirteen plus the book whole series would be completely different. People understand that books can
be controversial, but that is okay. In a study with teachers and students both read I Hadn t Meant to
Tell You This and they both found the novel controversial, but the middle school girls believed that
was part of the book s importance (Freedman and Johnson 360). If more people could have an open
mind like these middle school girls, books would not need to be censored and there would be no need
for a rating

The Danger of Using Literature and Fiction as a Historical...
Literature and fiction can be dangerous to use alone as a historical source. However, in looking at it
with an analytical and open mind and incorporating it with textbooks, readers can gain tremendous
knowledge from literature. Looking at the portrayal of a topic by an author is important. All authors
write with specific audiences in mind, and with an intention or point. Understanding the point that
authors strive to convey can reveal a great deal about opinions and perspectives of the time period.
Literature is absolutely essential to world history. The insights in fiction go far beyond that of
textbook learning. Gender roles, the role of the court, and romances are effectively portrayed in
fiction, and convey insights that are different from those in a textbook.
The role of males in Aristocratic Japan and Italy was far superior to women. Both Heian Japan and
Renaissance Italy accepted a sexual double standard. For example, extra marital affairs were normal
for men. They were even openly discussed. In Italy, though men could only have one wife at a time,
there were high death rates, so many people married more than once in their lives. Wealthy Japanese
men most commonly had concubines. Although Christianity in Italy had prohibited concubines,
wealthy men did have mistresses, who did not have any legal standing. Heian Japan believed that the
first wife was most important, but polygamy was still popular and accepted. Unlike the exploitive

Upon The Burning Of Our House
Scriptures composed by authors around the world at many different times is how literature came to be,
and seeing how it has shaped and changed over the years is truly astounding. One might turn towards
a writing called Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God , by Jonathan Edwards to get a sense of how
dark someone can make a piece of text, or maybe a poem called, Upon the Burning of Our House , by
Anne Bradstreet, to see how well words can be put together to contemplate a life like experience.
Jonathan was born in 1703 and was a child prodigy at Yale University, which led him to become a
Puritan minister later in life, which greatly affected his writing style. Whereas Anne Bradstreet was

In the poem Upon the Burning of Our House , Bradstreet displays a kind of depressing mood as she
explains her losses in great detail, but also has a sense of hope, as she thinks of how God has blessed
her throughout her life and how he will continue to do so once she dies and goes to heaven. In the last
stanza of the poem, it reads, A price so vast as is unknown/ Yet by His gift is made thine own/ There s
wealth enough, I need no more/ Farewell, my pelf, farewell my store/ The world no longer let me
love/ My hope and treasure lies above. From reading this part of the passage and seeing how she
words the things that she has lost, it makes the tone very dark, whereas later on in the stanza, where
she explains how her treasures being above, leaving a spark of hope. In a contrasting story, where
Bradstreet leaves a spark of hope, Edwards leaves nothing behind as he explains the fierceness of God
and his lack of mercy. In Edward s writing, his main focus was to convince the reader(s) that God was
a downright cold blooded killer that wouldn t hesitate to kill anyone. In the middle of the writing,
Edwards says, The bow of God s wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice
bends the arrow at your heart, and strains the bow, and it is nothing but the mere pleasure of God, and
that of an angry God, without any promise or obligation at all, that keeps the arrow one moment from
being made drunk with your blood. This short quote gives a frightening and very dark mood as he
portrays God to be totally merciless, and caught up in his own power to kill anyone. Seeing how each
of these authors wrote their compositions, it is very clear how they differ in their personality or
