Alan Mann s Life Story Alan Mann was born in 1974 in the city of Monroe, Michigan. Monroe is
about 40 miles South of Detroit on Lake Erie. He has two older brothers named Jason and
Michael. Alan s parents met when they were in the Navy. His father changed services to the
Army and was stationed in Monroe as a recruiter after returning from the Vietnam War. Being
born the son of an Army member makes one an Army Brat which means moving very often and
attending several schools over one s lifetime (Baker, 2015). One of his earliest memories is of
his mother bundling him up to go outside in the heavy snows of a Michigan winter storm. In
1978, the family moved to Mainz, Germany where he attended the first grade. While stationed
there, the family visited many German castles, learned a lot of German history, went on
Volksmarches which were noncompetitive walkathons (AVA) and met a lot of interesting people.
In 1981, the family moved back to the United States to Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas. There, Alan
attended Logan Heights Elementary School. His house was on a street that had a dead end.
Beyond the dead end was literally the desert complete with cactuses, tumbleweeds, horned frogs,
and tarantulas. He loved going over the border to Juarez, Mexico with the family and haggling
with the merchants for items. Finally, in 1982 the family moved to Ft. Polk, Louisiana for his last
move which is where his father retired from the military. In Louisiana, Alan attended Leesville
Junior High and High School. He graduated with honors in 1992. He enrolled at Northwestern
State University for the fall semester. However, he was working full time, had an hour long
commute to classes, and a new girlfriend that would soon be his wife. His grades weren t very
good. Alan decided perhaps he was ready for a break from school and was ready to do a little
growing up . Having a long history of military service in his family, he looked to do his duty and

In the roughly eleven minute interview with my client, Alex, we discussed her need for case
management services. She established her concerns that she wanted to address with me, as well
as her current status in education, living arrangements, social supports, along with her history in
the same areas. We also began to discuss (informally) the goals that she intends to reach with help
of my services and other services she may be referred to. During the process, I learned about Alex
s strength and resilience. I also learned a lot about myself as an interviewer.
Initially, I was worried about covering everything that was required in terms of client information in
the interview. I thought that it would take too long, and that I wouldn t be able to have a
conversation with the client, and instead I would just be asking questions one by one. As the
interview proceeded, and I focused on using open and closed questions, I realized that the session
would go quite smoothly. Alex was really willing to discuss her medical and psychological

I.Speech Overview:
A.General Goal: To inform.
B.Specific Goal: By the end of my speech, my audience will understand the real illness that is
depression and how much it does deal with my generation and the toll it has had on us and how to
deal with it.
II.Introduction: (This is where you start talking)
A.Attention Grabber: In the second grade, after a really, really close family friend had passed
away I realized that my days were kind of gloomy and that my always positive mindset had
drifted off into a place even now I can t reach, I tried and tried being happy but no matter what I
just couldn t see the world as the gum drop and rainbow type of place I thought it was, and on a
Sunday, on October 25th, 2015, after about 9 years of feeling this way, I have been medically
diagnosed with depression.
B.Relevance Statement: According to Medical Author: Roxanne Dryden Edwards, Depression is
the leading cause of suicide. In a national survey of high school students, nearly 20% of teens
thought about attempting suicide, and more than 8% made a suicide attempt. Over half of all kids
who suffer from depression will eventually attempt suicide at least once, and over 7% will die as a
result.
C.Credibility Statement: so why am I telling you this? And why should you listen to me? Well
