Capstone Essay On Environmental Ethics
Capstone Essay: Environmental Ethics
DDT is an insecticide that is known to be particularly effective in controlling the spread of malaria
bearing mosquitos. However, the use of DDT is also controversial because of its negative effects on
the environment and the potential risks to human health, which were brought to attention in Rachel
Carson s hugely influential Silent Spring (1962). DDT has been banned in the United States for
over thirty years, largely due to the response Silent Spring incited in the public (Bailey, 2004).
Malaria remains an issue that is especially prevalent in developing countries; it is also these
countries that often rely on foreign aid, and that aid occasionally comes with the condition that the
use of DDT be banned. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Deontology looks at the motivations of the individual when making a decision; therefore,
regardless of the outcome, the decision is ethical if the intentions behind it were good. Another
important aspect of deontology is Kant s formalism. One key aspect of this is that a person
should never be a means to an end, and even more importantly, a person s most important duty is
to preserve life. The motivation behind permitting the use of DDT is to prevent the spread of
malaria bearing mosquitos, which will likely save millions of lives in developing countries
stricken by the disease. Therefore, the intentions behind this decision are good. However, the
motivation behind banning the use of DDT is also based on good intentions, which is to protect
the environment and human health. When determining the ethicalness of the decision solely on
good intentions, there does not appear to be a clear winner; to further examine this, it is
necessary to decide what is more valuable human life or the environment and human health. Kant
s formalism places the duty to protect human life above all other duties, and therefore, according
to this perspective, preventing malaria related deaths a higher priority than protecting the
environment. The negative effects on human health, such as the link between DDT and cancer,
is often cited by those opposing the use of DDT, but what the effects are and whether the effects
are definitely caused by DDT is not certain (Wikipedia, 2015). Based on historical evidence,
DDT has saved millions of lives and will save millions of lives in the future. Therefore, if
protecting human life is the priority, as it is according to Kant s formalism, the decision to use
DDT is ethical. When considering that one of the conditions to receiving foreign aid is to prohibit
the use of DDT, it is clear that the aspect of Kant s formalism that states human lives should never

Analysis Of Fight Club And The Girl With The Dragon
How David Fincher uses colour in the film Fight Club and how this is used to influence the viewer.
Colour in film is very important, it can change the mood of the film, influence viewers emotions
as they watch, can be used as symbolism and can even teach the viewer in a very short time to
expect something to happen when a certain colour is shown. The Director of Fight club and other
films such as Se7en and the Girl with the Dragon tattoo, David Fincher is very well known for
working closely with the cinematographer and his post production team to tightly control the colour
in his films and being quite innovative in his techniques to achieve better quality of colour and
control over his films.
David Fincher, the director of Fight Club is well known for the certain look of his films as he
has developed his own signature style, sometimes called reality enhanced as his style is natural
lighting but in a new almost HD way. He uses techniques such as LED lighting, the films are dark
and dank but colourful at the same time. As a usual template it seems he de saturates the picture
then depending on the mood of the scene he warms up or cools off the image often times he uses
blue in the shadows to add depth and to retain the crisp blackness and teal to the highlights this
shows a strong understanding of how colours work together.
In Fight Club, David Fincher uses his usual hues of blacks, greys and browns but also adds in
yellows, blues and greens. Yellowis usually a happy

Essay on Important Elements Of A Campaign Strategy
Important Elements of a Campaign Strategy
Campaigning for any type of elected office requires a sharp eye for detail in regard to what
voters are looking for in a candidate. A campaign strategy should be comprehensive in its efforts
to reach as many voters as possible. Yet, without a solid base of ideas from which to expand
upon, the message being conveyed can easily be lost or taken out of context. In order for a
campaign manager to avoid this blunder from occurring and maximize the candidate s chances of
victory, he or she must pay attention to a few basic campaigning elements before attempting to
stretch the campaign to its maximum visibility. First, the campaign manager must identify the

Still, it is vital for a candidate at any level to develop a grasp of the different groups that will
decide his or her fate. As stated earlier, this dimension of the campaign process is primarily dealt
with before the campaign commences. Once completed, the popular definition of the word
campaign takes form.
Conveying a message to the voters in the form of speeches, advertisement, and public appearances
is the primary objective of a political campaign. This lets the public know what any given
candidate can offer them if elected to office. The simplest manner in which to convey whatever
message is to incorporate it into a campaign theme. quot;It is a serious mistake to assume that
voters are paying close attention to your election, or any election quot; (Shea 1996,
148). The fact is that most voters do not go out of their way to make the right voting choice. All
a voter wants is a quick and simple reason to vote for a candidate. If every voter researched the
possible candidates before each election, campaigning would be obsolete. The political campaign
serves as a vehicle to inform voters. The best and most effective way for a candidate to do this is
with a campaign theme. A campaign theme should be general in nature.
It should be an idea that a large group can grab hold of. If the theme selected is too precise, it
portrays the candidate as narrow minded. Simply put, the broader a theme is, the more voters it
attracts (Shea 1996,

Motorcycle Club Culture In The 1970 s
During the 1960 s and the 1970 s, America was experiencing a cultural evolution that moved
from the stereotypes in the 1950 s to a more free expression nation. There was numerous reasons
why this culture changed, which resulted from the Cold War, the Vietnam War, Cuba Missile
Crisis, or the tensions of equality among races and gender. The entertainment industry changed
their media to attract their customers, which led to controversial movies and a new form of
music. A movie that was a huge success due to its relevance at the time and people was Easy

individualism, drug use, and different types of views during that era. The movie is about two men

Endgame Play Essay
On April 25th, I spent my Tuesday evening watching the production, Endgame, which is located
in the Mason Hall of vertical building at 17 Lexington Avenue. Honestly, I was looking forward
to this production because I ve never seen a play at the Baruch s vertical campus theater. I was
also curious for the plotline of Endgame because I remember that Eric Krebs mentioned that this
play was going to be very difficult to understand as it is meant for adults. After observing Endgame
for about 75 minutes, I can undoubtingly conclude that it was one of the most confusing, but
brilliant theatrical productions I ve ever watched. Endgame by Samuel Beckett focuses on the life
of the two protagonist Hamm and Clov who live with both of Hamm s parents after an apocalyptic
disaster. Throughout the play, Hamm continuously orders Clov, who is his servant, to follow
routines such as opening the curtains, checking out of the window with a telescope, or moving
Hamm s wheelchair to the middle of the room. It was, honestly, very difficult for me to... Show

Clov and Hamm would perform the same unfinished routines each day as if there is nothing
much left to do as their endings are approaching. It is a way to show the audience, especially the
older people, that death is going to occur, but it is still a scary thing to face. Isolation is another
main point in the Endgame. The two protagonists have shown that even though there is constant
bickering, they both needed each other. They are afraid of being alone, which is a common
struggle many people deal with in life. I believe Krebs was correct because this was play that
older people can definitely relate to. There was not any particular scene that spoke out to me
because the entire play was indeed splendid. For the most part, the meaning behind the story was
amazing and

Formal Context In Double Indemnity, By Billy Wilder
Formal context is a big part of why movies are how they are. In Double Indemnity (1944) clip, by
Billy Wilder, there are many formal context elements that are important as to why the choices
are made during scenes. Some of these are the types of shots, camera movement, lighting, and
the mise en scene. This paper analyzes the five shots in the two minute and thirty three second
scene in depth. The prologue shot is forty four seconds, which is a long take. It starts with a tall,
dominant character walking towards the elevator. As he is walking the shot transforms from a
medium long shot (also known as plan americain) quickly to a medium shot. The character is
facing the front of the elevator while giving his back the camera, building a distance between the
audience and the character. He is wearing his coat in one arm and is trying to cover his other arm
with the other side, showing to the audience that he is hiding an injury. As soon as he is in the
elevator, a short delicate character follows him into the elevator and begins talking to him.
Viewers find out the tall character s name is Neff. During the first thirty seconds of the shot, the
camera is static and the music is extra diegetic, which builds anticipation towards Neff who is
wearing a mysterious hat that covers his face. The worker attempts to initiate a conversation with
Neff, but he is very dry, building more anticipation to what is going to happen. When Neff exits the
elevator, there is a tracking shot where

Military Recruitment
In the case of military service it goes without question that serving is a privilege and a honor for
those that decide to serve. However, the question I would like to know is, should we change the
way we recruit troops? In saying that and going back to the case study, Sandel presents different
ways of militaryrecruitment. The first way of recruitment was by forcing people to serve, the
draft. An old tactic that was used years ago in my opinion placed people in positions of being
vulnerable and sad because their lives were controlled by people of higher power. The second
way of recruitment still involved the draft concept, however it allowed for people to pay random
replacements to fill in their spot in fighting in the war and joining the military. There are people that
may agree to this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In my point of view I would answer no to Sandel s opposed question. I feel that the system of
volunteering allows for society to make executive decisions for themselves rather than someone
of a higher power making it for them. Furthermore, it puts a stop to the idea of society even
thinking about having to pay someone for a replacement. On the contrary, when reading the
surrogate case I felt that people should not look at partial surrogacy any different then they
would at full surrogacy. Though people may justify that partial surrogacy is wrong because it s
the process of selling a child for monetary gain, people still have to realize that someone is doing
a great for service for people who are in need. Though it seems bad that a person would give
away a child for money, it also makes it bad for the person who s judging the person selling their
egg because your initially depriving them of their self ownership. By depriving someone of their
self ownership your only afflicting unhappiness and misery into someones

Patrick Bennet s Lovers Dark Past
Lovers Dark Past
The 1990s were defined as the rise of multiculturalism and alternative media. Movements like hip
hop, and alternative rock would become popular across the world for young people for the next
decade. Technology such as cable television and the internet would also become revolutionary.
Also, in the 1990s female roles began to grow and the gender roles began to change. The United
States created an enormous progress in ending discrimination in the government, education,
employment, and the law because of the women`s movement. Lovers Dark Past isn`t just about
a story of a man and a woman falling in love it also leaves a power message. The short story
Lovers Dark Past teaches that forming a relationship can lead to something special and create an
everlasting bond. Lovers Dark Past features a devastating event that happens to a man and a

What Was The Causes Of The Revolt Of 1857
The Revolt of 1857 1858 that happened in India is known also as the Mutiny of Sepoy in Britain
and as the First War of Indian Independence among the Indian population. It started as the uprising
of the soldiers of the Bengal Presidency Army that aimed to expel the British rule from the
territory of India. However, the uprising spread very quickly all over the northern and central
regions of India and soon the rebellion by the civilian population started in a significant number of
military towns of India such as Allahabad, Cawnpore, Delhi, Lucknow, Meerut, Peshawar and many
other towns. Hundreds and thousands of people had died during the years of this uprising. One of

The main cause of the rebellion is considered to be the East India Company s exploitative and
oppressive policies towards the Indian native soldiers Sepoy. However, there were also many
other causes that in sum resulted in the Rebellion of 1857. During the period between 1820 and
1856 East India Company acting on the behalf of the British government had been actively
maintaining a number of reforms and policies in India. In addition, different fractions of people
wanted to improve India in different ways. Evangelicals, for example, saw the improvement in
India through Christianity and conversion of the Indian people to it. Liberal reformist thought that
only Western education would bring the barbarous nation to the modern level. Utilitarian saw the
improvement in India through the maintaining good policies. However, the Indian people had a
negative attitude towards the active interference of the British people in their lives and saw the
British actions as an assault on ancient traditions and customs. In addition, there were also two
important Governor Generals of India whose policies accelerated the growing nationalism among
the Indian people and resulted in the Great Uprising. The periods of government of Lord
Bentinck and Lord Dalhousie had also contributed to the mutiny as their reforms were aimed to
change the social, economic and political lives of the Indian people. This essay will analyse all
these causes in a more detailed way (From lectures

Executive Summary SITUATION: Once the largest computer manufacturer in the world, Dell
has slipped to third in line behind Lenovo and HP. With sales of their once famed laptops and
PCs quickly declining, their market share has taken a hit as a result. Lenovo and HP are not
only to blame for Dell s demise, Apple and Google have established new markets for smartphones
and tablets that has shifted demand to these new toys away from laptops/PCs. These new
disruptive technologies are a cheaper and thus more accessible substitute to the old guard (laptops
and PCs). COMPLICATION: With Dell s old core business in rapid free fall and competition
eating away at its margins, Dell shares have plummeted from their all time highs. As a result any...

The 5 year PEG Ratio of Dell is 2.17 versus 1.12 for Lenovo and 1.645 for the industry. It can be
inferred from the Peg Ratio that Dell s EBIDTA growth rate for the next 5 years is going to less
than its peers and the industry. From the ROIC chart shown below, it can be seen that Dell s
ROIC has decreased from 2008 to 2010 and increased in 2011 by about 10%. However, the ROIC
is projected to decrease to 2014 and then remain stable @ 20% for the next 10 years. Based on
the APV and comparable multiples valuation, it can be seen that the future of Dell looks bleak
as it stands today. The Personal Computers (PC) industry is not a great industry to invest in
unless you are ready to innovate and adapt to the changing demands of consumers. Adding this
to the fact that consumers are slowing moving away from PCs to smartphones and tablets makes
it a no brainer for Dell to make significant changes to its business model as soon as possible DEAL
STRUCTURE Dell s 2013 interest coverage ratio has decreased from about 44 in 2011 to 17.6. This
trend is a bit of a concern as the risk of bankruptcy increases with more debt. Dell has about $21.8
billion in liability obligations and $10.9 billion in excess cash ((Yahoo Finance). At a $13.75 per
share, an equity amount of $3 billion is needed to complete the deal. It is recommended that
Michael Dell stays on as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) after the LBO deal.

different poets with the same messages. Reading all three of the poems, I gathered several
informative notes that would help me know how and why each of these carpe diem poems relate

considerative while also being proud. I can imagine him feeling delighted and relaxed while

Golden Age Of Athens
Athens had what is known as its Golden Age between 480 and 430 BCE, and while it was a
relatively short period of time, it laid the foundations of western civilization.
As the Golden Age dawned, the autonomous poleis (city states) that had formed in the preceding
two to three centuries had set aside their differences and united to face the threat of invasion posed
by the Persian Empire. Though vastly outnumbered, the Greeks had finally defeated the Persian
armies in 480 BCE. In the years of peace that followed, the Greeks made significant advances in art,
literature, science and philosophy, as pride and patriotism drove them to greater heights of
creativity and in Athens, an experiment with a new kind of government flourished under the
statesman Pericles.
Prior to about 600 BCE, Athens had been an oligarchy, with an aristocratic minority controlling its
government. But enlightened Athenian leaders began instituting reforms to the city s government
between 600 and 500 BCE. Solon (c. 638 558 BCE) introduced a new code of laws that was less
harsh than Athens existing legal code (laid out by an Athenian statesman called Draco, hence the
term draconian to describe repressive laws) , and also set up a Popular Assembly of Citizens,
although a council of aristocrats still made the laws.
Cleisthenes (c. 570 508 BCE) known as the Father of Democracy expanded democracy still
further, creating a Council of 500, which consisted of 50 representatives from each Greek tribe. He

The Change Of Change Management
Change management is tedious and excruciating task, essentially affecting an association s drive
towards their goal achievement. What s more shaking is that majority of the change management
initiatives drastically fail. We all know that nothing is constant but change and change is inevitable,
so in light of this associations need to determine how to effectively adjust and manage change.
Change administration is vital ability that every organization should possess and that is in
alignment with the services being provided by the organization (Doyle, M 2000). Communication
has to be proper for disseminating the information regarding the change process and it is the quality
of efficient organizations that they implement change effectively. It is clear that every project is
different and by this dynamic nature they call for change. In order to rightly deploy plan of actions
for change any firm needs leaders that has the qualities to understand change and implement them
making it sure that all the change activities are in the interest of organization. This calls for
preparing the organization for the change process, guaranteeing the acceptance from the parties
involved in change and drawing in official supporters to champion and support the change
throughout the process and even after the change has been implemented to evaluate and monitor it
whether it has achieved the desired goal or not (Denhardt, R 2008)
These standard processes will win those individuals who must act in

The Korean Art Exhibition At The Los Angeles County Museum...
Korea has met many religious ideas and practices throughout the nation s history. Other than the
more indigenous ideologies like shamanism, Confucianism and Buddhism have been most
influential in ancient Korea prior to the onset of Japanese colonialism. The Korean Art Exhibition at
the Los Angeles County Museum of Art showed multiple ritual objects such as incense burners and
ritual bottles (kundika) used in Buddhist practices during the KoryЕЏ period, suggesting that the
religion was prevalent during that time. The museum also displayed a wooden tablet (wonpae) used
in the ChosЕЏn period for Buddhist rituals; however, the exhibit did not forget to mention that
Confucianism was the official ideology of the ChosЕЏn. The relationship between the two set of
beliefs has been dynamic throughout Korean history. Buddhism dominated religious practices in
the KoryЕЏ period, but during the transition from the KoryЕЏ to the ChosЕЏn period, Neo
Confucian scholars overpowered its counterpart by calling for anti Buddhism reforms. The
bringing of new ideas by Neo Confucians was necessary in replacing the rich and overpowered
Buddhism religion and attaining a new order of virtuous and meritorious leadership. Buddhism, for
most of Koreas history, was the prominent religion that exerted influence over the Korean people,
both elites and commoners. It reached its peak in the KoryЕЏ period, during which many Buddhist
monasteries were built. The Buddhist community grew extensively along with the

Besides Prefontaine, Nike has sponsored many other successful track amp; field athletes over the

How Much Influence Has A Little Country Have On The Great...
Just how much influence could a little country have on the great United States of America? One
may be surprised. With a size slightly less than twice the size of New Jersey, Switzerland has a
lot to offer for its size (The World Factbook). The country is located in central Europe, north of
Italy and east of France, and shares their temperate climate. This landlocked terrain mostly consists
of mountains, with a central plateau of rolling hills, plains, and large lakes (The World Factbook).
Despite their relatively small size and their centralized location, they have a large influence on the
rest of the world. Specifically to the United States, the Swiss have brought their culture,
merchandise, and services to share with the people of America. Switzerlandhas a relatively short
history. In 1291 A.D., the Swiss Confederation was founded as a defense alliance between three
cantons of modern day Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden (Schelbert). Wars of conquest and arranged
alliances grew the confederation (Schelbert). In 1499, the Confederation gained its independence
from the Holy Roman Empire (The World Factbook). In 1515, the now 13 canton confederation
ended their expansion with their defeat in northern Italy at the battle of Marignano (Schelbert). The
Swiss Confederation then started conducting the practice of armed neutrality (Schelbert). Despite
this neutrality, the Protestant Reformation had the people of the Confederation split into hostile
camps and threatened the

Restaurant management can examine the food in the kitchen, but customer satisfaction depends to
a considerable extent on the way it is served. The quality of education is so difficult to measure that
few educational organizations have a formal quality control system. 3. Labor Intensive
Manufacturing companies add equipment and automate production lines, thereby replacing labor
and reducing costs. Most service companies are labor intensive and cannot do this. Hospitals do
add expensive equipment, but mostly to provide better treatment, and this increases costs. A law
firm expands by adding partners and new support personnel. 4. Multi Unit Organizations Some
service organizations operate many units in various locations, each unit relatively small. These
organizations are fast food restaurant chains, auto rental companies, gasoline service stations, and
many others. Some of the units are owned; others operate under a franchise. The similarity of the
separate units provides a common basis for analyzing budgets and evaluating performance not
available to the manufacturing company. The information for each unit can be compared with
system wide or regional averages, and high performers and low performers can be identified.
However, because units differ in the Mix of services provide, in the resources that they use, and in

Alan Mann Short Story
Alan Mann s Life Story
Alan Mann
Southeastern Oklahoma State University
Alan Mann s Life Story Alan Mann was born in 1974 in the city of Monroe, Michigan. Monroe is
about 40 miles South of Detroit on Lake Erie. He has two older brothers named Jason and
Michael. Alan s parents met when they were in the Navy. His father changed services to the
Army and was stationed in Monroe as a recruiter after returning from the Vietnam War. Being
born the son of an Army member makes one an Army Brat which means moving very often and
attending several schools over one s lifetime (Baker, 2015). One of his earliest memories is of
his mother bundling him up to go outside in the heavy snows of a Michigan winter storm. In
1978, the family moved to Mainz, Germany where he attended the first grade. While stationed
there, the family visited many German castles, learned a lot of German history, went on
Volksmarches which were noncompetitive walkathons (AVA) and met a lot of interesting people.
In 1981, the family moved back to the United States to Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas. There, Alan
attended Logan Heights Elementary School. His house was on a street that had a dead end.
Beyond the dead end was literally the desert complete with cactuses, tumbleweeds, horned frogs,
and tarantulas. He loved going over the border to Juarez, Mexico with the family and haggling
with the merchants for items. Finally, in 1982 the family moved to Ft. Polk, Louisiana for his last
move which is where his father retired from the military. In Louisiana, Alan attended Leesville
Junior High and High School. He graduated with honors in 1992. He enrolled at Northwestern
State University for the fall semester. However, he was working full time, had an hour long
commute to classes, and a new girlfriend that would soon be his wife. His grades weren t very
good. Alan decided perhaps he was ready for a break from school and was ready to do a little
growing up . Having a long history of military service in his family, he looked to do his duty and
serve also. After talking with the recruiters in his home town, the Air Force seemed to have the
jobs he found most interesting. He took the ASVAB test and scored high enough to select any job

Analyzing the Significance of the Evolution of Aeronautics...
The advancement of air technology during the early twentieth century, brought about by the
initiation of World War One, has posed significant questions about the role and value of aeronautics
in major world tragedies, such as the September 11 Attacks in New York City and Washington
D.C., and the 1991 Air Campaign of the Gulf War: Does the continuous advancement of aeronautics
serve as the true mastermind of such acts of savagery and tragedy? Is the advancement of
aeronautics the culprit responsible for the deaths of the elderly, women, infants, and children?
Aeronautics revolutionized World War One and set the stage for the occurrence of major global
events throughout the twentieth and twenty first centuries.

However, due to their penetrable material and large frame, they did not long withstand the ever
improving period of air warfare, and immediately were replaced with smaller, more durable
aircraft. At the beginning of the war, airplanes did not have the capacity to carry crews, as well
as weapons. If airmen had attempted to carry anything other than the crew on the planes, they
would have carried the severe risk of negatively affecting the performance of the plane, which
would result in detrimental effects on reconnaissance. However, as the war progressed, the idea
of airplanes being utilized merely for reconnaissance purposes was deferred as a result of the rapid
rate of growth in aeronautics. Soon, airplanes were being used to carry crews, weapons, and
military supplies.
Along with the advancement of airplanes came the advancement of strategical tactics used in
order to prevent the primary purpose of airplanes during World War One: reconnaissance. One of
the most significant advancements in aeronautics as a result of the occurrence of World War One
was the arrival of air bombers. The arrival of air bombers occurred after aircrafts finally had the
capacity to carry crews, weapons, and military supplies without the performance of the airplane
being affected. Air bombers were utilized in order to prevent the spying of dispositions by the
enemy. However, one might argue

The Health Risk Associated with a Missing Ingredient in Bottled Water
Nothing in education is so astonishing as the amount of ignorance it accumulates in the form of
inert facts. * Henry Adams
We can t change the bottled water industry, but we can change our own ignorance. Paul W. Mason
You may think that drinking bottled water is healthier than drinking tap water. However, according
to a recent Dateline NBC top story on the quality of bottled water, this healthy move is not so
healthy after all. Recently, a bottled water company in California was found to be bottling its brand
of Yosemitewater from a well in Fullerton, right below the LA freeway system (Verhovek 2).

There is a key ingredient missing in the bottled water we drink and it is putting us at serious health
risks. This missing element is Magnesium. Our recent switch from tap to bottled water has left 72%
of our population magnesium deficient (Blackburn 1).
However, our population doesn t know about this current danger, they have been lulled into
believing that bottled water is healthy.
There are 150,000 deaths per year being caused by magnesium deficiency (United 4). That
calculates to one death every 2.5 minutes. In fact, a small city population dies each year because
they are magnesium deficient.
When you are magnesium deficient, your cholesterol is raised, you absorb more saturated fatty
acids, you decrease fecal excretion of saturated fatty acids and cholesterol and you decrease
myocardial concentrations of magnesium (Current 141).
There are also many signs of magnesium deficiency; nausea, confusion, delirium, muscle weakness,
irritability and electrical changes in the heart muscle.
Magnesium deficiency also causes atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmia, and
cardiovascular death (Citizens 2). Magnesium deficiency has killed more people than those that
were killed in all of the American wars (Blackburn 1).
So why isn t this news making front page headlines? The deaths are becoming almost as frequent as

Women In James Bond Films
Women are deemed as a minority yet make up 51% of the world population and in 2014 made up
only 12% of protagonists in films. And that is just on screen, the percentage decreases as you go
farther and farther into behind the scenes positions such as directors, cinematographers, and writers.
Add race and ethnicity and those characters percentages decline even more (Lauzen, 2015.) Women
in filmand television are often portrayed with emphasis based on their body type and in
advertisement are largely objectified. The large objectification and misrepresentation of women in
the media has led to an offset psychological view of women from growing up to adulthood. The

The Turn of the Screw by Henry James continues to stir up an immense amount of controversy for
such a short novel. Making a definite, educated decision on the actual truth considering the

close reading of the story seems impossible, because the counter argument appears just as

slightly above the other servants, just as Mrs. Grose places Miss Jessel above Quint, however the
fact of the matter was that to the rest of society, these people were all considered to be on the same
bottom level of the socio economic ranking at the time. Robbins brings up an interesting idea in his
criticism that Henry James is trying to explain the standpoint of society throughout the novel,
which is that society felt that servants were not meant to be part of real society but were meant
to just blend into the background and do their job without really being noticed or acknowledged.
He basically uses the ghosts as symbols, even reminders of the fact that the governess is just like
them, in the way that she is below most of society since she is an upper class servant, and is
therefore invisible and something less than [a] human being (336). The housemaids, the
dairywoman, the gardener, and an old pony were all said to be equivalents to each other, therefore
making these servants comparable to a pony, which is definitely not making them on the same
level as other human beings, let alone those of a higher class. James is

Amazon intended to benefit from cross selling on the basis that it already has a loyal installed
base in place. (Krishnamurthy, 2004) Amazon also benefited from economies of scope as its basic
infrastructure is already in place and highly scalable.
Three building blocks complement this: Amazon s feedback system, recommendation system and
its buy/sell system. Its recommendation system accounts for 35% of Amazon s sales as customers
are more inclined to buy a product based on the strength of the reviews of other customers. It also
brought repeated purchasers that account for 66% of sales. (Salehnejad, 2012)
Also, Amazon has emphasized on building several distribution centers around the world to hasten

the buying experience (IT Business Edge, 2012). Such a system and service is what draws

Essay On Society In Jane Eyre
In the beginning of her life Jane s place in society and her inability to be happy because of such
deeply trouble her. Jane goes through a multitude of stages and places in life trying to find
somewhere she feels safe and morally sound so that she may allow herself in order to experience
happiness. It is often through introspection and observation of society that Janecomes into herself
and develops the principles and sensibility that she actively searched for to find peace and make

At a young Jane observes that beauty and status warrant kindness and in society which translates
to a woman being slightly freer to have desires. Prominent examples in her life at the time were
Eliza and Georgiana Reed who were able to be horrible little girls but were still doted upon by
the adults and expected to lead carefree happy lives. Because Jane so greatly differs from the two,

The Reflection Of A Interview With An Interviewer
In the roughly eleven minute interview with my client, Alex, we discussed her need for case
management services. She established her concerns that she wanted to address with me, as well
as her current status in education, living arrangements, social supports, along with her history in
the same areas. We also began to discuss (informally) the goals that she intends to reach with help
of my services and other services she may be referred to. During the process, I learned about Alex
s strength and resilience. I also learned a lot about myself as an interviewer.
Initially, I was worried about covering everything that was required in terms of client information in
the interview. I thought that it would take too long, and that I wouldn t be able to have a
conversation with the client, and instead I would just be asking questions one by one. As the
interview proceeded, and I focused on using open and closed questions, I realized that the session
would go quite smoothly. Alex was really willing to discuss her medical and psychological
background, and made it clear that why she was meeting with a case manager. I found it easy to

10 Reasons We Re Stoked About Survivor Research
10 Reasons We re Stoked About Survivor: Cambodia It s hard to believe that reality TV show
Survivor is coming into it s 31st season. Yep, that s right THIRTY ONE SEASONS. Not many
TV shows, let alone reality programs, have that claim to fame. Yet season after season, Mark
Burnett and the team put together interesting and energetic casts, and for some reason we still
love to watch how they interact with each other when left stranded in the middle of nowhere. So
what does Season 31 promise to bring? Here are 10 reasons we re stoked about Survivor:
Cambodia. Number Ten: Jeff Probt I know, I know, we ve seen Probst do this gig a million (ok,
30) times, but somehow the iconic blue shirt, hand raise at the start of every challenge, and the
witty dialogue never gets old. Also an executive producer on the show, Probst knows what... Show

A new setting equals new challenges for the castaways; not just physically, but also as they
battle against the harsh environment and embark on the never ending quest to find more food.
Number Eight: Blast from the past Do you remember Terry? That dude who rocked the boat in
the Cook Islands and nearly took the million from underneath Aras s nose? And what about
Savage, the guy who was as likeable as Rupert in Pearl Islands? Plenty of Survivor alumni are
back this year, and with old school players comes the entertainment value of seeing how
traditional game values exist in a revitalised and highly competitive new version of Survivor.
Number Seven: World s colliding Can you imagine the fireworks that must have occurred when
some of these players butted heads? Put together the hot headedness of Abi Maria from the
Philippines, the chaos of Kass from Beauty vs Brains vs Braun, and the wit of Australia s Jeff
Varner, and we have a recipe for a fascinating (and entertaining) season. Number Six: The physical

Cruelty In Lord Of The Flies Analysis
In William Golding s The Lord of the Flies, Jack and others use their acts of cruelty towards the
other boys to show a sense of power and role on the island higher than everyone else s. In the
book, Jack and his choir are obsessed and driven to find and kill a pig. While killing the pig they
chant, Kill the pig! Cut its throat! Kill the pig! Spill her blood! . These words are evidently an
act of cruelty because they could have simply killed the pig quietly and civilly. However, by
chanting and frolicing about, they were given the power they had desired through cruelty. After
successfully killing a quantity of pigs, the author states, The Compulsion to track down and kill
was swallowing him up , meaning that he desires to kill because... Show more content on

There is no given reason as to why, so, the boys believe that Jack is doing it simply because he
can. Jack is able to show his authority as a chief and does this to fulfil his cruel needs. In
chapters ten and eleven, Ralph and his boys go to the Reds, Jack and the hunters, side of the
island. Limping along the edge of the water, the boys arrive to face the Reds. Once Piggy is
dead, he and the other tell him that is what he will be looking forward to by yelling, thats what
youll get , while showing no remorse he hurling a spear at Ralph. Once Ralph leaves, Jack tells
the twins, You have got to join my tribe. Refusing, Sam and Eric say, You lemme go..and me.
Jack responds with, What d you mean by not joining my tribe? Eventually, they twins give in,
knowing what would happen to them if they had not agreed. Jack and the majority of his boys,
show their power to Ralph and the others in a cruel way. By doing this, it means that by using their
power to their advantage, they can do anything by making the others fearful. While the twins are on
guard duty, Ralph finds them, asking them to leave. However, the twins tell him, You don t know
Roger. He s a terror...And the chief...they re both terrors. The boys reveal that they are not only

1.Introduction
In the currently highly integrated world some businesses are successful and big enough to become
multinational companies, thus, operate in different countries. Regardless of the country in which
the company operates, its government needs money for increasing the well being of the citizens
and developing the country s economy. One of a government s ... Show more content on

Thus global companies become more competitive to other businesses and decrease the profitability
of the market for their rivals, especially for national firms. Even though tax avoidance through
charity seems to be moral, in fact, statistics provided by the Commission the charity represents
that The Cup Trust spend only fifty five thousand pounds directly on charity and mostly these
were small start up children s charities (Weakley, 2013). To add more, not the high rate of taxes
itself forces businesses to resort to tax avoidance but the opportunity to do it legally. According
to The Economist (2013), in recent years the corporate profits as a share of Gross Domestic
Product in America were high, but the tax revenues of the government were one of the lowest in
history. This paradox could be explained by the fact that there was a significant decrease in tax
rates of Organisation for Economic Co operation and Development (OECD) countries for more
than seven percent for the last decade and they became considerably lower than in the United
States of America (ibid). The reasons why tax avoidance theoretically may be justified were stated
above. However, it was shown that in practice even if multinational firms pay to charity, which is
obviously highly moral, they do it to reduce bills, which makes such operations morally wrong.

Explain The Extent Between The Federalists And The 1790s
order to stop sole control of power, the Constitution deliberately dispersed said power between the
member states and the national government. This had the effect of a fragmented government
structure where co ordination was in short supply and control lay in a plethora of discordant
hands. The realisation that this could only be overcome via the coming together of similar
minded folk who could, in turn, appropriate the presidency and control congress dawned, and the
1790 s heralded two American national parties, The Federalists and the Republicans. However,
this does not mean that there was a complete absence of political activity prior to the 1790 s. The
exact opposite is in fact true. There was already large social, racial and economic disjuncture...

Questions of national interest consumed both parties focus and naturally, drew their attention
beyond state lines. Support had to be drawn from all over the country, the Federalists, from the
banking, commercial and financial interests and the Republicans, from small farmers, debtors,
southern planters and frontier settlers .They could not afford to be exclusive parties. The dangers of
a narrowly based coalition were acute and as such, both parties needed to increase their support.
Otherwise, neither party would have the slightest chance of gaining a majority vote and in turn
winning the presidency. This, according to many scholars, can be held accountable for the
extremely broad scope of the two modern American parties that are almost indiscernible from one
another. Parties must be adept to the changing patterns of American life. Indeed, the failures of the
Federalist and Whig parties in pervious years can be attributed to their stubborn resistance to
widening their coalition. Both of the modern parties have taken valuable lessons from these
failures, although lapses in attention have seen them suffer electorally in the

Foolishness In A Midsummer Night s Dream
Many people can be foolish because of the decisions they decide to make, surprisingly even
fairies can be fools. In the play A Midsummer Night s Dream by William Shakespeare, fairies are
just as fools as humans can be. From Bottom turning into an ass. Puck s mistake in applying the
love potion on the wrong person. Oberon s decision to apply the love potion on his wife. By
looking at the foolishness of Bottom, Puck and Oberon, it is evident that Puck s statement Lord
what fools these mortals be can also be applied to fairies People unknowingly are constantly being
a victim of something they weren t unaware of. For Bottom he was transformed into an ass for a
prank that he was unaware about. This happens when Puck had a task to make Titania... Show more

Oberon was so jealous over a boy that he decides to apply the potion on his own wife Titania,
wanting her to fall in love with the first ugly creature she see s. Oberon makes this decision
because he gets into a fight with Titania with how her attention is more towards the changeling
boy then over him, making him want to apply the potion. This is a foolish thing to do because
Oberon should understand that Titania is taking care of this baby because she feels like she
owes the mother of the child, he should know that the little boys need a lot of attention to be
taken care of. Instead of feeling jealous, he should of felt proud that his wife was doing a kind
act. Instead he takes it in the wrong way, playing a mean prank on his wife and making her fall
in love with Bottom, to take away the changeling boy. People are fools, even to their loved ones
. As a result of Bottom, Puck and Oberon, they prove that Puck s statement Lord what fools these
mortals be can also be applied to fairies. Bottom shows that he is fool with playing on with the
tricks and actually thinking that a Queen loves him. Puck is a fool because he applies the love
potion on the wrong person making the plot change many times. Oberon is a fool because instead
of accepting the act of kindness his wife is doing, he is jealous. Fools are not just in mortals, but in

Auteur In Film Analysis
Question 8: Take one contemporary director and analyse in detail, discuss and debate how they can
be considered to be an auteur. In your discussion refer to the different ways auteur have been
discussed in film studies.
Introduction:
The term of an auteur has been discussed ever since 1950s and even today it is still as much as
evaluative, as it is also pretty vague and unclear. Many scholars and film studies academics took
this topic into consideration and many of them came up with similar, but significantly different
conclusions or felt that some aspect of already existing theories had to be deepened and
expanded. Nevertheless, even today who is an auteur and who can say so, leads to a very heated

Jealousies In The Crucible
From The Crucible and my own experience there have been some types of jealousies, selfish
ambitions, and peer pressures, etc. They are both the same from the story and into real life
experience. So let s start with The Crucible there is a lot going on in there because there is
proctor and elizabeth and abigail and more there is jealousies and more. And in my life
experience there has been the same thing like friend. From the author Victor Hugo he explained
on society is a republic. Well it s referring from the crucible where everyone in the story was in a
part of jealousies. In my own life i ve seen that there are people who have been jealous and prue

In real life it s about what happens who does and why but it happens in real life not in a story but
both are similar. The situation for me were i didn t have problems but i was in it to the point
where it would get out of hand and worse from the types of effective ways from people. This
topic will be about the types of the ways in The Crucible the people in there get hurt a lot. Where
Proctor tells Elizabeth peer pressured her not to go with Herrick because she was accused of
witchcrafts . quote I ll go John Elizabeth You will not go! Proctor he wanted her to stay and not
going with them and she was going but he would pull her away from the door.Another part were
abigail gets jealous of Elizabeth because proctor kept choosing her over abigail. Oh, I marvel
how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be Abigail ( angered at himself as well). You ll
speak nothin of Elizabeth! in which proctor didn t like her talking about his wife like that
because he loves her but Abigail loved Proctor and she didn t want him with Elizabeth. There is a
part of selfish were abigail goes against tituba saying that tituba made her do things with
witchcrafts so Abigail lied to her father saying She comes to me every night to go and drink blood

Recombinant Dna Techniques Essay
In this experiment, individuals were able to use recombinant DNA techniques such as cloning to
alter the DNA of a certain strain of yeast called Saccharomyces Cerevisiae. By the use of cloning,
scientists are able to analyze and compare the genetic material of a specific organism to another. In
this lab, the recombinant DNAtechniques are used to transform AmpS E. Coli to AmpR E. Coli.
This was done by using an insert, a vector, and a host. The insert was S. Cerevisiae genomic
DNA, E. Coli plasmid was the vector, and E. Coli was the host. The technique of gel
electrophoresis was also used to determine whether the DNA was cut or not with restriction
enzymes. Uncut sequences of the DNA were sent to an outside laboratory for sequencing. Then
when the sequencing was complete, computer programs, such as BLAST, were used to determine
whether or not the genomic insert originates from a gene and if the yeast codes for a protein that
could be found within the human genome. Introduction Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, more
commonly known as baker s yeast or brewer s yeast, is very favorable to use in biotechnology
because of the wide range of environmental conditions it could live in. S. Cerevisiae is capable to
live from freezing temperatures to about 55в—¦C, proliferate from 12в—¦C to 40в—¦C, grow
within the pH range of 2.8 8.0, could be dried almost completely and still come back alive with the
addition of water, grow and ferment at sugar concentrations of 3M, and can tolerate up to a

Oak Park Township s Potential Trend Equation
1 Introduction This report presents projections of Oak Park Township s population for the year
2030. These projections were done by three methods such as the following: allocation, trend
extrapolation, and cohort component. These projected processes and results can be elaborated by
methods in the following sections. 2 Population Projection Methods 2.1 Allocation Allocation, this
method uses larger region s population or projections and percentage of population of a smaller
area in the larger region to estimate smaller area s population. Oak Park Township is located in
Cook County, so the first step is to obtain the most recent population of Cook County and Oak Park
Township and the projected population of Cook County in 2030. According to... Show more content

Then, using the population of each five year cohort in 2000, we projected the population
excluding migration in 2010. Comparing the census and projected population in 2010, the10 year
migration rates were estimated. So, with the migration rates, the migration of 2030 could be
projected. Due to the projected births, deaths and migration in 2030, the projected population of
Oak park Township in 2030 was shown in following Table 4. Comparatively speaking, the
allocation and trend extrapolation methods require less data and simply assume current
distributions and the trend will continue. However, the cohort component method relies on more
data and assumptions than the others. It can be rationally projected. That is to say, if obtaining
the data and assumptions is not difficult, the cohort component could provide a reliable
projection. 3 Conclusion The results of the projected population of Oak Park Township in 2030
by different methods were distinctly shown in Table 6. These projections have quite a bit of
difference. According to the above comparison of three methods, the cohort component should be
the reliable one. In conclusion, the population of Oak Park Township is likely to see a reduction,
compared with 2010. The population is projected from 51,878 to 45,187, a decrease of 6,691 or 12.9

  • 2. Capstone Essay On Environmental Ethics Capstone Essay: Environmental Ethics DDT is an insecticide that is known to be particularly effective in controlling the spread of malaria bearing mosquitos. However, the use of DDT is also controversial because of its negative effects on the environment and the potential risks to human health, which were brought to attention in Rachel Carson s hugely influential Silent Spring (1962). DDT has been banned in the United States for over thirty years, largely due to the response Silent Spring incited in the public (Bailey, 2004). Malaria remains an issue that is especially prevalent in developing countries; it is also these countries that often rely on foreign aid, and that aid occasionally comes with the condition that the use of DDT be banned. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Deontology looks at the motivations of the individual when making a decision; therefore, regardless of the outcome, the decision is ethical if the intentions behind it were good. Another important aspect of deontology is Kant s formalism. One key aspect of this is that a person should never be a means to an end, and even more importantly, a person s most important duty is to preserve life. The motivation behind permitting the use of DDT is to prevent the spread of malaria bearing mosquitos, which will likely save millions of lives in developing countries stricken by the disease. Therefore, the intentions behind this decision are good. However, the motivation behind banning the use of DDT is also based on good intentions, which is to protect the environment and human health. When determining the ethicalness of the decision solely on good intentions, there does not appear to be a clear winner; to further examine this, it is necessary to decide what is more valuable human life or the environment and human health. Kant s formalism places the duty to protect human life above all other duties, and therefore, according to this perspective, preventing malaria related deaths a higher priority than protecting the environment. The negative effects on human health, such as the link between DDT and cancer, is often cited by those opposing the use of DDT, but what the effects are and whether the effects are definitely caused by DDT is not certain (Wikipedia, 2015). Based on historical evidence, DDT has saved millions of lives and will save millions of lives in the future. Therefore, if protecting human life is the priority, as it is according to Kant s formalism, the decision to use DDT is ethical. When considering that one of the conditions to receiving foreign aid is to prohibit the use of DDT, it is clear that the aspect of Kant s formalism that states human lives should never be a ... • 3. Analysis Of Fight Club And The Girl With The Dragon How David Fincher uses colour in the film Fight Club and how this is used to influence the viewer. Colour in film is very important, it can change the mood of the film, influence viewers emotions as they watch, can be used as symbolism and can even teach the viewer in a very short time to expect something to happen when a certain colour is shown. The Director of Fight club and other films such as Se7en and the Girl with the Dragon tattoo, David Fincher is very well known for working closely with the cinematographer and his post production team to tightly control the colour in his films and being quite innovative in his techniques to achieve better quality of colour and control over his films. David Fincher, the director of Fight Club is well known for the certain look of his films as he has developed his own signature style, sometimes called reality enhanced as his style is natural lighting but in a new almost HD way. He uses techniques such as LED lighting, the films are dark and dank but colourful at the same time. As a usual template it seems he de saturates the picture then depending on the mood of the scene he warms up or cools off the image often times he uses blue in the shadows to add depth and to retain the crisp blackness and teal to the highlights this shows a strong understanding of how colours work together. In Fight Club, David Fincher uses his usual hues of blacks, greys and browns but also adds in yellows, blues and greens. Yellowis usually a happy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay on Important Elements Of A Campaign Strategy Important Elements of a Campaign Strategy Campaigning for any type of elected office requires a sharp eye for detail in regard to what voters are looking for in a candidate. A campaign strategy should be comprehensive in its efforts to reach as many voters as possible. Yet, without a solid base of ideas from which to expand upon, the message being conveyed can easily be lost or taken out of context. In order for a campaign manager to avoid this blunder from occurring and maximize the candidate s chances of victory, he or she must pay attention to a few basic campaigning elements before attempting to stretch the campaign to its maximum visibility. First, the campaign manager must identify the important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Still, it is vital for a candidate at any level to develop a grasp of the different groups that will decide his or her fate. As stated earlier, this dimension of the campaign process is primarily dealt with before the campaign commences. Once completed, the popular definition of the word campaign takes form. Conveying a message to the voters in the form of speeches, advertisement, and public appearances is the primary objective of a political campaign. This lets the public know what any given candidate can offer them if elected to office. The simplest manner in which to convey whatever message is to incorporate it into a campaign theme. quot;It is a serious mistake to assume that voters are paying close attention to your election, or any election quot; (Shea 1996, 148). The fact is that most voters do not go out of their way to make the right voting choice. All a voter wants is a quick and simple reason to vote for a candidate. If every voter researched the possible candidates before each election, campaigning would be obsolete. The political campaign serves as a vehicle to inform voters. The best and most effective way for a candidate to do this is with a campaign theme. A campaign theme should be general in nature. It should be an idea that a large group can grab hold of. If the theme selected is too precise, it portrays the candidate as narrow minded. Simply put, the broader a theme is, the more voters it attracts (Shea 1996, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Endgame Play Essay On April 25th, I spent my Tuesday evening watching the production, Endgame, which is located in the Mason Hall of vertical building at 17 Lexington Avenue. Honestly, I was looking forward to this production because I ve never seen a play at the Baruch s vertical campus theater. I was also curious for the plotline of Endgame because I remember that Eric Krebs mentioned that this play was going to be very difficult to understand as it is meant for adults. After observing Endgame for about 75 minutes, I can undoubtingly conclude that it was one of the most confusing, but brilliant theatrical productions I ve ever watched. Endgame by Samuel Beckett focuses on the life of the two protagonist Hamm and Clov who live with both of Hamm s parents after an apocalyptic disaster. Throughout the play, Hamm continuously orders Clov, who is his servant, to follow routines such as opening the curtains, checking out of the window with a telescope, or moving Hamm s wheelchair to the middle of the room. Clov and Hamm would perform the same unfinished routines each day as if there is nothing much left to do as their endings are approaching. It is a way to show the audience, especially the older people, that death is going to occur, but it is still a scary thing to face. Isolation is another main point in the Endgame. The two protagonists have shown that even though there is constant bickering, they both needed each other. They are afraid of being alone, which is a common struggle many people deal with in life. I believe Krebs was correct because this was play that older people can definitely relate to. There was not any particular scene that spoke out to me because the entire play was indeed splendid. • 9. Formal Context In Double Indemnity, By Billy Wilder Formal context is a big part of why movies are how they are. In Double Indemnity (1944) clip, by Billy Wilder, there are many formal context elements that are important as to why the choices are made during scenes. Some of these are the types of shots, camera movement, lighting, and the mise en scene. This paper analyzes the five shots in the two minute and thirty three second scene in depth. The prologue shot is forty four seconds, which is a long take. It starts with a tall, dominant character walking towards the elevator. As he is walking the shot transforms from a medium long shot (also known as plan americain) quickly to a medium shot. The character is facing the front of the elevator while giving his back the camera, building a distance between the audience and the character. He is wearing his coat in one arm and is trying to cover his other arm with the other side, showing to the audience that he is hiding an injury. As soon as he is in the elevator, a short delicate character follows him into the elevator and begins talking to him. Viewers find out the tall character s name is Neff. During the first thirty seconds of the shot, the camera is static and the music is extra diegetic, which builds anticipation towards Neff who is wearing a mysterious hat that covers his face. The worker attempts to initiate a conversation with Neff, but he is very dry, building more anticipation to what is going to happen. When Neff exits the elevator, there is a tracking shot where ... • 10. Military Recruitment In the case of military service it goes without question that serving is a privilege and a honor for those that decide to serve. However, the question I would like to know is, should we change the way we recruit troops? In saying that and going back to the case study, Sandel presents different ways of militaryrecruitment. The first way of recruitment was by forcing people to serve, the draft. An old tactic that was used years ago in my opinion placed people in positions of being vulnerable and sad because their lives were controlled by people of higher power. The second way of recruitment still involved the draft concept, however it allowed for people to pay random replacements to fill in their spot in fighting in the war and joining the military. There are people that may agree to this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In my point of view I would answer no to Sandel s opposed question. I feel that the system of volunteering allows for society to make executive decisions for themselves rather than someone of a higher power making it for them. Furthermore, it puts a stop to the idea of society even thinking about having to pay someone for a replacement. On the contrary, when reading the surrogate case I felt that people should not look at partial surrogacy any different then they would at full surrogacy. Though people may justify that partial surrogacy is wrong because it s the process of selling a child for monetary gain, people still have to realize that someone is doing a great for service for people who are in need. Though it seems bad that a person would give away a child for money, it also makes it bad for the person who s judging the person selling their egg because your initially depriving them of their self ownership. However, there were also many other causes that in sum resulted in the Rebellion of 1857. During the period between 1820 and 1856 East India Company acting on the behalf of the British government had been actively maintaining a number of reforms and policies in India. In addition, different fractions of people wanted to improve India in different ways. Evangelicals, for example, saw the improvement in India through Christianity and conversion of the Indian people to it. Liberal reformist thought that only Western education would bring the barbarous nation to the modern level. Utilitarian saw the improvement in India through the maintaining good policies. However, the Indian people had a negative attitude towards the active interference of the British people in their lives and saw the British actions as an assault on ancient traditions and customs. In addition, there were also two important Governor Generals of India whose policies accelerated the growing nationalism among the Indian people and resulted in the Great Uprising. The periods of government of Lord Bentinck and Lord Dalhousie had also contributed to the mutiny as their reforms were aimed to change the social, economic and political lives of the Indian people. Lenovo and HP are not only to blame for Dell s demise, Apple and Google have established new markets for smartphones and tablets that has shifted demand to these new toys away from laptops/PCs. From the ROIC chart shown below, it can be seen that Dell s ROIC has decreased from 2008 to 2010 and increased in 2011 by about 10%. However, the ROIC is projected to decrease to 2014 and then remain stable @ 20% for the next 10 years. Based on the APV and comparable multiples valuation, it can be seen that the future of Dell looks bleak as it stands today. The Personal Computers (PC) industry is not a great industry to invest in unless you are ready to innovate and adapt to the changing demands of consumers. Adding this to the fact that consumers are slowing moving away from PCs to smartphones and tablets makes it a no brainer for Dell to make significant changes to its business model as soon as possible DEAL STRUCTURE Dell s 2013 interest coverage ratio has decreased from about 44 in 2011 to 17.6. • 19. Golden Age Of Athens Athens had what is known as its Golden Age between 480 and 430 BCE, and while it was a relatively short period of time, it laid the foundations of western civilization. As the Golden Age dawned, the autonomous poleis (city states) that had formed in the preceding two to three centuries had set aside their differences and united to face the threat of invasion posed by the Persian Empire. Though vastly outnumbered, the Greeks had finally defeated the Persian armies in 480 BCE. In the years of peace that followed, the Greeks made significant advances in art, literature, science and philosophy, as pride and patriotism drove them to greater heights of creativity and in Athens, an experiment with a new kind of government flourished under the statesman Pericles. Prior to about 600 BCE, Athens had been an oligarchy, with an aristocratic minority controlling its government. But enlightened Athenian leaders began instituting reforms to the city s government between 600 and 500 BCE. Solon (c. 638 558 BCE) introduced a new code of laws that was less harsh than Athens existing legal code (laid out by an Athenian statesman called Draco, hence the term draconian to describe repressive laws) , and also set up a Popular Assembly of Citizens, although a council of aristocrats still made the laws. It is interesting to see how throughout the novel the Governess is proud to place herself slightly above the other servants, just as Mrs. Grose places Miss Jessel above Quint, however the fact of the matter was that to the rest of society, these people were all considered to be on the same bottom level of the socio economic ranking at the time. Robbins brings up an interesting idea in his criticism that Henry James is trying to explain the standpoint of society throughout the novel, which is that society felt that servants were not meant to be part of real society but were meant to just blend into the background and do their job without really being noticed or acknowledged. He basically uses the ghosts as symbols, even reminders of the fact that the governess is just like them, in the way that she is below most of society since she is an upper class servant, and is therefore invisible and something less than [a] human being (336). The housemaids, the dairywoman, the gardener, and an old pony were all said to be equivalents to each other, therefore making these servants comparable to a pony, which is definitely not making them on the same level as other human beings, let alone those of a higher class. Amazon intended to benefit from cross selling on the basis that it already has a loyal installed base in place. (Krishnamurthy, 2004) Amazon also benefited from economies of scope as its basic infrastructure is already in place and highly scalable. Three building blocks complement this: Amazon s feedback system, recommendation system and its buy/sell system. Its recommendation system accounts for 35% of Amazon s sales as customers are more inclined to buy a product based on the strength of the reviews of other customers. It also brought repeated purchasers that account for 66% of sales. Even though tax avoidance through charity seems to be moral, in fact, statistics provided by the Commission the charity represents that The Cup Trust spend only fifty five thousand pounds directly on charity and mostly these were small start up children s charities (Weakley, 2013). To add more, not the high rate of taxes itself forces businesses to resort to tax avoidance but the opportunity to do it legally. According to The Economist (2013), in recent years the corporate profits as a share of Gross Domestic Product in America were high, but the tax revenues of the government were one of the lowest in history. This paradox could be explained by the fact that there was a significant decrease in tax rates of Organisation for Economic Co operation and Development (OECD) countries for more than seven percent for the last decade and they became considerably lower than in the United States of America (ibid). This had the effect of a fragmented government structure where co ordination was in short supply and control lay in a plethora of discordant hands. The realisation that this could only be overcome via the coming together of similar minded folk who could, in turn, appropriate the presidency and control congress dawned, and the 1790 s heralded two American national parties, The Federalists and the Republicans. The dangers of a narrowly based coalition were acute and as such, both parties needed to increase their support. Recombinant Dna Techniques Essay In this experiment, individuals were able to use recombinant DNA techniques such as cloning to alter the DNA of a certain strain of yeast called Saccharomyces Cerevisiae. By the use of cloning, scientists are able to analyze and compare the genetic material of a specific organism to another. In this lab, the recombinant DNAtechniques are used to transform AmpS E. Coli to AmpR E. Coli. This was done by using an insert, a vector, and a host. The insert was S. Cerevisiae genomic DNA, E. Coli plasmid was the vector, and E. Coli was the host. The technique of gel electrophoresis was also used to determine whether the DNA was cut or not with restriction enzymes. Uncut sequences of the DNA were sent to an outside laboratory for sequencing. Oak Park Township is located in Cook County, so the first step is to obtain the most recent population of Cook County and Oak Park Township and the projected population of Cook County in 2030. Comparing the census and projected population in 2010, the10 year migration rates were estimated. So, with the migration rates, the migration of 2030 could be projected. Due to the projected births, deaths and migration in 2030, the projected population of Oak park Township in 2030 was shown in following Table 4. Comparatively speaking, the allocation and trend extrapolation methods require less data and simply assume current distributions and the trend will continue. However, the cohort component method relies on more data and assumptions than the others. It can be rationally projected. That is to say, if obtaining the data and assumptions is not difficult, the cohort component could provide a reliable projection. 3 Conclusion The results of the projected population of Oak Park Township in 2030 by different methods were distinctly shown in Table 6. These projections have quite a bit of difference. According to the above comparison of three methods, the cohort component should be the reliable one.
