1. Sociology Topics For Essays
Crafting an essay on the topic of "Sociology Topics For Essays" can present a unique set of
challenges. The field of sociology is vast and diverse, encompassing a wide range of subjects
that delve into the intricacies of human society, behavior, and institutions. This diversity can
make the process of selecting a specific topic both exciting and daunting.
One of the difficulties lies in finding a balance between a topic that is broad enough to explore
various facets of sociology but narrow enough to allow for in-depth analysis within the confines
of an essay. Additionally, keeping the content relevant, engaging, and academically sound
requires a thorough understanding of sociological theories, research methodologies, and the
ability to critically evaluate existing literature.
Moreover, the dynamic nature of sociological issues and the constant evolution of societal norms
pose a challenge in maintaining the timeliness and relevance of the essay's content. Staying
current with the latest research and incorporating recent sociological trends adds complexity to
the writing process.
Another aspect that can make this task challenging is the need to navigate the sensitive nature of
some sociological topics. Discussing issues related to race, gender, class, or other social
constructs requires a nuanced and respectful approach, considering the potential impact on
readers and the importance of presenting diverse perspectives.
In conclusion, writing an essay on sociology topics demands not only a strong grasp of the
subject matter but also the ability to synthesize information, critically analyze theories, and
communicate complex ideas effectively. It's a task that requires dedication, research skills, and a
deep understanding of the societal issues being explored.

Concord Bookstore Organizational Change
The 64 year independent Concord bookstore underwent a period of upheaval created
by the owners of the store not considering how the change in management without
consulting the current staff and management could produce negative feedback from
the employees. The owners showed that they need to improve their understanding of
how organizational change should occur to produce positive outcomes (Spector,
2010, p. 2).
The situation the owners were responding to was the increase in competition from
chain bookstores and Internet sales. They did not get the employee s or the current ...

In acting unilaterally the owners ensured that the change process would fail to
have the desired results. As the Concord owner s previous hands off approach to
management of the store is shown by the long work histories of managers and
staff. They did not create an atmosphere that was conductive to any changes
(Borkowski, 2005, p. 384 385). In this case as there was no instilling a vision of the
necessity of the change it lead to failure. The owners sought to skip the first stage of
the change process that would have helped the employees to help understand the
need for the second process of change (Borkowski, 2005, p. 385).
Rather than the owners understanding the reason for following the change process
in bringing in a new general manager it eradicated the special considerations that
had made the store unique. One employee who quit after working there 18 years
had a hard time understanding how the dispute got out of hand but by the old staff
leaving the store just becomes bookshelves and carpets (Spector, 2010, p. 3). In
limiting the chance of employees working to develop new skills and competencies by
participating in deciding how the store would be run the owners ensured that the
change would occur but fail.
Conclusion
The Concord Bookstore organizational change case looks to be a case of where the
owners are trying to save a business struggling but fail in this effort. This paper
shows their

Snow Lake Snow Lake is a town in eastern Arkansas near the Mississippi River.
Calling this area is a town, though, is a stretch for this town only has around 50
people. The area also lacks many other town characteristics. The closest gas station
is sixteen miles away from Snow Lake and the restaurant is twenty six miles away
at the town of Elaine. To get any supplies other than what is carried at a gas station
Snow Lakers must travel fifty miles to Helena West Helena which is also the
closest doctor s office. The children of Snow Lake attend grade school at Elaine and
high school in the town of Marvell which is fifty miles away. Students travel over
one hundred miles daily to attend school and live in Snow Lake, though there are so

Another situation that shows the isolation of this area is described in the article
when Judge McElroy came into office and decided to venture all the way out to
Snow Lake. As he drove into the town he was immediately flagged down by a
citizen and questioned, he was then instructed to leave immediately. This type of
action would not be anywhere close to normal in a city or any sort of large town. It
really could only happen at Snow Lake. Snow Lake is obviously very isolated
because of its distance from a larger town but it is also very isolated due to its
geographic location. Snow Lake is located in Desha County; however, Elaine,
Marvell, and Helena West Helena are all a part of Phillips County. This is because
Snow Lake is in the North Eastern part of Desha County that is cut off from the
main portion by rivers. No bridges have been built to connect Snow Lake to the
main part of Desha County due to the few people that would benefit from the large
cost and effort. Instead, when Snow Lakers wish to visit central Desha County they
must endure a two and a half hour drive that covers over one hundred and thirty five
miles and four different Arkansas counties. The article says that while Judge
McElroy does drive this distance he prefers to fly there as it only takes twenty
minutes and is one hundred miles shorter by air. Snow Lakers seldom must drive this
distance; however, some situations might require a visit to a courthouse or a revenue
office and driving the distance may
4. J Alfred Prufrock Allusions
An allusion is an implied or indirect reference ( Allusion ) to a concept that readers
are typically familiar with. Often used in literature, allusions commonly support
an intended theme. Author T.S. Eliot frequently applies allusions to his literature
for this same reason. Eliot s allusions range from literary to religious references,
and they require the reader to have a basic knowledge of each topic. An analysis of
the T.S. Eliot poems, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and Journey of the Magi
, shows a strong use of allusion to communicate a theme. A fear of rejection by
society remains a prevalent idea conveyed in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.
Throughout the poem, the disillusioned speaker, J. Alfred Prufrock, expresses his
fixation upon appearances. He expresses concern over other people sneering at
how his hair is growing thin ( The Love Song 41) or how his arms and legs are thin
(44). Prufrock shows apprehension of receiving poor judgement from eyes that fix
[one] in a formulated phrase (56). This fear of rejection, however, is also seen in
the allusions. The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock opens with an epigraph from
Inferno, the first part of Dante Alighieri s epic poem, Divine Comedy. The epigraph
consists of a piece spoken by Guido da Montefeltro who currently resides in the
eighth circle of hell. As Guido speaks, he is under the assumption that,... Show more

Eliot s Journey of the Magi is akin to The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock in that
the two each use allusions to convey a theme, this time in regards to religion.
While The Love Song explores a theme of social acceptance, Journey of the Magi
delves into the pain religion can cause. This poem, however, conveys this pain, both
through the physical journey itself as well as sites seen along the way. Similar to
The Love Song , Journey of the Magi also begins with a quote from another source,
this time from Bishop Lancelot Andrewes Christmas sermon in
5. The Negatives Of The Vegetarian Diet
Is the vegetarian diet beneficial to the body? The argument of whether humans are
herbivores or carnivores has been around for as long as there were vegetarians. A
vegetarian is defined as not eating animal flesh including poultry and fish. A
vegetarian diet consists of whole grains, meatless proteins, fruits and vegetables and
healthy fats. People are on the diet because they are against eating meat, but there are
others who do the diet because it is good for their health. The vegetarian diet is
beneficial to the body because it reduces the risk of heart disease, it reduces the risk
of cancer and reduces the risk of diabetes.
A contributing factor that can lead to a person having heart disease is
hypertension. Hypertension is another terminology for high blood pressure. Factors
that lead to hypertension include having high levels of fats and cholesterol in one s
diet. Going vegetarian may help lower your blood pressure because it eliminates
factors known to worsen hypertension, such as eating red meat, states Emily
Harrison. Vegetarian diets have low intakes of total fat, saturated fatty acids, and
cholesterol. Since the vegetarian diet is lower in cholesterol and fats the chances of
hypertension is decreased. Hypertension is just one cause that can lead to heart
disease; the main cause of heart disease is due to having high levels of cholesterol.
The vegetarian diet reduces heart disease lies in the fact that vegetarians avoid animal
products since they are the main

Flawed Dogs, a book by Berkley Breathed, creator of Opus, Bloom County, and Bill

trials and growth of two main characters, Heidy McCloud and Sam the Lion.
Though this appears at first glance to be a children s book, obviously, fiction, it will
delight adults as well.
The title applies to the characters, which the reader will identify with. Whether
human canine or celestial being, defined here, the message is: No matter how life or

reacted fiercely with bared teeth and barking. This is how he arrived in the dog
fighting pit.
Across from Sam, above a crazed pit bull, was a marquee for the Westminster Dog

The almost universal mainstream acclaim for Traffic indicates just how much the
worst kinds of conservative ideologies continue to inform even purportedly liberal
attitudes toward drugs, while the dismissal of Blow as anything more than a
decadent fantasy or simplistic cautionary tale misses its much more accurate
indictment of the American idealization of capitalist conquest. 2. That cocaine is
the drug of the ruling class in America is undoubtedly more than a function of its
high price in comparison to other drugs. After all, the effect of cocaine is much
closer to the effects of the most popular of the legal drugs of choice: caffeine and
nicotine. (Not surprisingly, caffeine and cocaine were once combined in Coca
Cola.) Like these other speedy substances, cocaine heightens the senses and gives
the user a great deal of energy. However, unlike other forms of speed, cocaine also
gives its user the sensation of mastery and invulnerability. Rather than the ego death
of heroin or LSD, cocaine legitimates the preferred modality of capitalist subjectivity
radical and inviolate individuality. If there were any doubt about the relationship of
cocaine to capitalism, the case is eloquently made by Tony Montana

established, and legal (reasonableness and fairness) issues.
This memo is my interpretation on the readings of EPA s clean power plan specific
to how state budgets where established and legal issues emphasizing the fairness and
reasonableness towards the states.
1.0Overview
The clean power plan was adopted by the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency) on August 03, 2015 to regulate carbon emissions from existing power plants.
Under the Supreme Court decision in Massachusetts v. EPA , greenhouse gases meet
the definition of air pollutants under the Clean Air Act, implying they need to be

It is determined to reduce carbon emissions from the power sector 32 % of 2005
levels by 2030. The primary objective of the clean power plan is to establish unique
emission rate goals and mass equivalents for each individual state to reach this target.
2.0How state emission budgets where established
The clean Air Act under the section 111(d) creates a partnership between EPA,
states, tribes and U.S. territories with EPA setting a goal and states and tribes
choosing how they will meet it. EPA is defining interim and final CO2 emission
performance rates for two subcategories of fossil fuel fired electric generating units
(EGU s):
1.1,305 lbs/MWh for existing fossil fuel fired electric steam generating units
(generally, coal fired power plants)
2.771 lbs/MWh for existing natural gas combined cycle units
EPA has also established statewide interim and final goals in 2 forms to give a wide
range of choices for states in implementing these standards like:
1.A rate based state goal measured in pounds per megawatt hour (lb/MWh);
2.A mass based state goal measured in total short tons of CO2
States then have to develop and implement plans for power plants in their state either
individually, in group or by applying other measures to meet with the interim
reduction goals in between 2022 2029 and final goal by 2030.
2.1BSER: Best system of emissions reduction
The basis for the emissions reductions in the EPA s proposed rule is a review of the
11. African Americans With Psychotic Disorders
Over the years, the scientific literature has shown that African American patients are
more likely than other racial groups to receive a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
Determining the reasons for this disparity has been a challenging problem for
researchers. The debate is centered on the question of whether or not African
Americans are truly more susceptible to schizophreniathan these other groups;
conversely, the idea that African Americans are simply being diagnosed at higher
rates has persisted.
Strakowski et al. (1996) showed that African Americans with psychotic disorders are
more likely than Caucasian patients to report first rank symptoms of schizophrenia to
their treating clinician. These first rank symptoms refer to auditory ... Show more

For the expert consensus diagnoses, clinicians looked at the structured interviews and
medical records of the patients. Strakowski determined that there are minimal
differences in first rank symptoms between African American and Caucasian patients
when clinicians are blinded by ethnicity/race. There were 79 patients that met DSM
IV criteria for an affective disorder, 40 identifying themselves as Caucasian or White
and 39 identifying themselves as African American. The expert consensus diagnoses
revealed the presence of first rank symptoms in 55% of the White patients and 62% of
the African American patients. However, despite these minimal differences, it was
found that during the structural interviews, African American patients were more
likely to be diagnosed with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder than their white
counterparts (Strakowski et al., 1996). Therefore, the overdiagnosis of schizophrenia
cannot be attributed to the presence of these first rank symptoms.
It is highly important to explore whether or not clinician overdiagnosis of
schizophrenia extends to other minority groups. A later study by Gara et al. (2012)
expanded on Strakowski s work. Six hundred ten subjects (including a group of self
identified Latinos) exhibiting affective symptoms were recruited at 6 different sites,
which would allow for more generalizability in the

Introduction The concept of Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) focuses on
merging or linking all forms of communications together in a pact. The concept is
critical in the promotion, advertisement and brand building of goods and services at
the marketing arena. The merging of promotional tools and use of lined
communication approach is essential to the success of every sales and marketing

The traditional promotion is expensive and ineffective. The principle of marketing
usually advocates for collective buying. This helps reduce the cost of shopping.
This means that use of several means of communications together at ago is less
expensive when they are met at the single basis. The effectiveness of
communication depends on the nature and the makeup of the given message. The
IMC uses several media which can be effective especially in the current world of
social media and internet. The digital IMC employs the multi tasking approach in
the use of media. This involves incorporation of mobile advertisement, YouTube
videos, Google adverts, blogs, and aerial advertisement at ago.it will, therefore,

then they have missed the whole information in traditional perspective (Bruce and

However, it should be appreciated traditional promotion carries the day regarding
ease top place and the estimation of viewership. Budgeting and establishment of a
specific form of communication are rather easy. It is also easy to gauge the
population that views the adverts as it is focused.
Reasons for IMC in Marketing Currently, marketers opt to apply the holistic approach
to the marketing of their products. The drastically

16. The Social Roots Of Crime
Introduction Crime is one of the most important, yet least understood social
problems in society. The public s knowledge about crime is often based on a host of
myths and misperceptions. Crime is often treated as an individualistic phenomenon.
(Esposito, 2013) The social roots of crime are often ignored; this is why a
sociological approach to criminology is important. Crimeis an action/behavior that is
considered particularly harmful and thus formally banned by a criminal law.
Americans are either indifferent or in favor of capital punishment, although public
support for the death penalty has been declining (Esposito, 2013).Typical reasons
given by supporters of Capital punishment; provides closure for grieving families,
retribution and serves as a deterrent. Capital punishment is cost effective for
example tax payers should not have to pay for killers to live behind bars.
Possibilities for wrongful conviction has decreased. Jeffery Reiman is an American
philosopher who wrote the book titled The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison.
Jeffery Reiman argued that the criminal justice system was designed to fail. The
criminal justice system is a system whose purpose is ensures laws that prosecute
criminal offenders, upholds social control, deterrence and justify crime. Reiman
stated in his book that the criminal justice system criminalizes non violent offenses
such as drug use and prostitution, gives people prison sentences that are harsh and

After reading chapter 3 and 4 of the novel Of Mice and Men, an important quote
stood out to me among the rest of the passage. On page 68, Crooks responded to
Lennie s sudden entrance, You go on get outta my room. I ain t wanted in the
bunkhouse, and you ain t wanted in my room. Earlier chapters describe how he
was not allowed to sleep in the bunkhouse with everyone else and had to be
separated in a room by himself. Moreover, it is a rare occasion does people ever
visit him, on the exception for Slim. The obvious interpretation would be the
connection it holds to the racism that existed at the time, but I perceived a deeper
connection behind his response.
Although Crooks is a diligent and hardworking stable buck, he experiences loneliness
from unequal treatment by others. Thus, his impetuous response to Lennie came
from the hardships he went through for being the only African American on the

hardly the typical fair for a Belawain.
Despite this, my liege would rather that his own line takes the throne in the event

strengthening the resolve of his people. Jorvan, on the other hand, is a foppish git

bloody kingdom. In truth, these traits would make for an excellent successor to any
king, but not for the likes of
20. Female Cancer Patients Negating Social Ideas of Beauty
My research topic is How can female cancer patients successfully negotiate social
ideas of beauty , I have chosen this question as a research topic as two of my family
members have recently suffered from and lost their lives to this disease and I want
to develop my knowledge of the disease and how it may lead to other health
problems. I have chosen to target the theme of beauty as the changes induced by both
the disease and the treatment are often visible, which sometimes lead to mental health
problems or feelings of great dissatisfaction.
Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and invade other
tissues; the disease can spread to other parts of the body through the circulatory and
lymph systems. There are more than 100 different types of known cancer, which can
be grouped into broader categories such as:
Carcinoma this is the cancer that originates in the skin and tissues and progresses to
cover internal organs. Some subtypes of carcinoma include adrenocarcinoma, basal
cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma.
Sarcoma this is the cancer that originates in the bones, fat, cartilage, muscle, blood
vessels, or other connective or supportive body tissues.
Leukemia this is the cancer that is established in blood forming tissue such as bone
marrow. This causes numerous abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the
blood.
Lymphoma and myeloma these are cancers that originate in the cells of the immune
system.
21. International Student And High Tuition Essay
Studying with those from another background other than our own provides
opportunities for greater discovery, understanding, and cooperation. International
students bring a variety of ideas and new perspectives to the classroom, aiding in the
educational process for all and are an important component to many universities
campus climate. Beyond the important cultural components they bring to campus,
International students are also a source of high tuition revenue for universities.
Students are often charged multiple times the rate of tuition that in state domestic
students pay, such as the Universityof Washington, where international students pay
almost three times as much per year (Lewin, 2012). The retention and graduation
rates of all students are important to universities; however, research on international
studentpersistence has largely been missing in the literature (Andrade 2009; Andrade
and Evans 2009). Interestingly enough, the Institute of International Education (IIE)
and other government agencies do not report data on international studentpersistence
rates (Evans et al, 2009). The majority of universities report their student graduation
and retention rates on their websites, with many universities including their
percentages by ethnic groups; however, very few universities identify the specific
rates for the international student population. According to the IIE, the international
student population in the United States comprises only about 3.5% of the total
22. The Colonial Period Of American Literature
The Colonial Period in American Literature Blake Quickel The Colonial Period of
American Literature was vital not only to the timeline of literature in our country, but
it shaped the values and tradition that we identify America with. Literature from this
period gives us a look into the beginnings of our country from different views such as
Poems and stories from Native culture, Puritans, and the founding fathers. These
writings give us an honest view of the way of life during this time. The Puritan
writings we read in this class were very interesting in how they showed the early
stages of America s religion. Although religion in our government and our country s
values has become less and less extreme over time, it is amazing knowing how much
control it had over society in our country s beginnings; and many of the morals
exorcised in the Puritan culture are still values relevant to our society today. In a
reading from the Introduction: Puritan Voices assignment (a), the writer refers to the
Massachusetts Bay Colony as a man s world , describing the limited roles of women
in society and how men were portrayed in the church as superior. Puritan ministers
often preached that the soul had two parts, the immortal masculine half, and the
mortal feminine half. Gender inequality is an enormous part of American Literature
throughout all periods, and here you can see where these values originated in our
country. Puritan society exists as a valid demonstration for why the first
23. The Theory Of Green Chemistry On Microwave Heating
Essay
Objective
The current experiment introduces the concept of green chemistry on microwave
heating to synthesise aspirin, instead of using conventional heating methods.
Introduction
Aspirin synthesis is a popular experiment undertaken in most organic chemistry
teaching laboratories (Montes et al., 2006). Most experimental procedures for aspirin
synthesis are undertaken to study the carbonyl nucleophilic substitution reactions
either under basic or acidic conditions (Polshettiwar and Varma, 2008; Varma, 2010).
However, the traditional approaches use cookbook procedures that fail to allow
students to learn how to critically reason and thoroughly understand the reaction
process.
In the last decade, there has been growing interest in the use of microwave irradiation
for organic synthesis. Microwave heating offers various advantages like controlled
heating and cooling, shorter reaction times, and reduction of secondary products
(Montes et al., 2006). In addition, microwave ovens offer a cheaper and cleaner
alternative to oil baths present in many organic reactions. Also, microwave heating is
more effective in solvent free reactions and in those reactions, that do not use
catalysts (Varma, 2010).
Reactions under solvent free conditions is a conducive approach that avoids the use
of solvents that are at times toxic, difficult to dispose or remove, and expensive
(Montes et al., 2006). The synthesis of analgesic drugs has been used to emphasise
the advantages of microwave assisted

Introduction
Blast protection, until recently, has only needed to be considered when constructing
underground shelters and military bunkers. Currently, however, there is a need for
urban buildings and similar structures used consistently by the general public to
withstand forces from nearby explosions. This need is due to the recent climb in
terrorist attacks in urban or crowded environments. These attacks have used the lack
of blast resistance in these buildings as a means for creating widespread havoc
through detonating an improvised explosive device (IED). These devices range from
explosives planted inside a structure to roadside or vehicular bombs. An urban
environment causes even relatively small explosions to be extremely potent ... Show

Structures that collapse in an urban environment result in casualties inside the
building and also result in collateral damage that may cause nearby structures to
also collapse. This effect was seen in the collapse of the World Trade Center in New
York City, although this collapse was not a result of the initial explosion. Had the
towers not collapsed, it is estimated that close to half of the deaths could have been
prevented (Dwyer). It is therefore vitally important for buildings that suffer damage
from explosions to remain structurally stable for as long as

their ideas for new biomedical prevention strategies in laboratory experiments or in

Pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) can be seen as two sides of the
same coin. PK and PD have a definite relationship, assessing how much drug gets to

significant roles in both drug development and their continual use in the clinical

To register of any investigational product for human use the FDA or other regulatory

theses preclinical studies are used to set maximum dose level for repeat dose studies
in animals to support the effects of overdose in humans or any organ toxicity by
comparing minimum lethal dose and maximum non lethal dose.
The usage of acute toxicity data are very limited in terms of focusing on minimum
lethal and maximum non lethal doses effects. Of less use than other, less harmful,
animal tests that are superior for deciding appropriate doses for further animal
studies. Not particularly useful for information on the nature of toxic effects, which
are better evaluated in other routine studies. Not, in practice, used to set doses in the
first human clinical trials because other routine studies provide more informative data

In an ever expanding world where resource scarcity is discussed in side
conversations and overpopulation is being combatted by concerned nations,
worldwide struggle of equal allocation of vital resources persist. Biological
resources and biodiversity in general are at the forefront of these concerns.
Decreasing biodiversity does not just pose a problem for the plants and animals
that are becoming increasingly endangered; individuals who have constructed their
livelihood around the availability of such resources face dire circumstances as
scarcity arises. The greater the variety of abundant plant and animal species present
in the world, the greater the potential opportunity, opportunities such as medical
discoveries and newfound scientific knowledge that increase the sustainability of
life on Earth. However, tragedy of the commons, has led to overuse of biological
resources across the globe, throwing the issue of sustainability into question. While
species extinction is a natural process in the world ecosystem, the rate at which it
has increased is not. In the past 65 million years the rate of extinction has gone
from one to five species per year to roughly 1,000 to 10,000 times that rate
(Diversity, 2013, pg. 1). This is no longer a matter of natural selection; this is a matter
of ineffective resource regulation worldwide. Despite extensive amounts of
environmental legislation actively in place, specie scarcity will continue to grow. The

refugees and natives. Throughout the movie, she talked to multiple Muslims and
natives to understand where the gap is coming from. Near the beginning of the
movie, Stacey talked to a Muslimspeaker about the issues that they face on a daily
basis. In his opinion, there were always people who made comments about Muslims.
However, it got much worse after the 9/11 attacks on the United States. He went on to

become the Pope. One of the main reasons I have chosen this topic is because I am
a very dedicated catholic and have been practicing my religion since I could ever

There are about 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide that make up almost sixteen percent
of the total world Population. (BBC News) That is a tremendous amount of people.
The Pope rules over all of those people in the organization known as The Catholic
Church. Becoming Pope is no simple task by any means. Even when it seems that
someone is very close to becoming the next Pope, the percentage of them actually
becoming Pope is very slim. In fact, just the odds of becoming Pope of someone is a
cardinal is less then one percent, and you must become a cardinal to be elected
Pope. The odds are not in anybody favor as they are 1,000 to 1(Kristi Barlette,
Times Union, 12 Feb, 2013). Although. There are few steps to becoming Pope;
each step is a long, difficult practice. First, a person must be a male and he must
eventually become Catholic. The next step is to get an education, for religious
studies and other academic subjects as well. Then, the person must become a
priest. He must do a good job in his parish and connect with the community. After
the person has spent some time and earned a great deal of respect from other
people, he will be addressed as Monsignor . He will then be put in for a promotion
where he will prove if he is worthy to continue to the next step of the process,
becoming a Bishop. The Bishop will continue to do exceptional work,
32. The Importance Of Globalization And Transnational
Literatures
Globalization and transnational interconnections between nations economies, the
flow of people, goods, and ideas have sparked a wake of scholarship and
ethnographies that seek to record these rapid changes. Globalization is transforming
previously isolated communities into transnational communities; these
interconnections gain the attention of scholars that concentrate on studying the
materialist impact of globalization or immigrationin relation to the binary between
developed and developing nations. However, these scholars tend to lose sight of the
people caught up in these rapid changes and due to the lack of non hegemonic
narratives the experiences of multiple communities are disregarded (Chavez 2013 ).
For example, researchers tend to be greatly interested in the economic roles that
migrants play in these transnational exchanges, when this is important, it is a
misfortune that researchers neglect to raise awareness on the sociocultural aspects of
these communities like their complex and dynamic identity journeys and identity
formations (Simich 2009). Addressing this lack of concentration on more social
aspects of historically underrepresented communities, authors from these
communities use transnational literature as a tool to communicate their experiences
while seeking to generate political consciousness in their audience (Dirlik 2002:355
217).
Furthermore, the historian Arif Dirlik merges into conversation the usage of
literature to represent transnational
33. Comparing Thucydides And Plato s View Of Human Nature
Human nature, by its very definition, is the way people naturally act, think, and
desire. It is the core essence of what makes us human, and thus is related to every
aspect of our lives. There are many ideas on what human nature is, and both
Thucydides and Plato had differing ideas on the subject. With these different views on
human nature, they both come with different political implications as well. In a
comparison between the two sides, I will argue that Plato s view of humannature and
its political implications are superior to that of Thucydides based on their
respective ideas and my own opinions on human nature. Derived from Thucydides
History of The Peloponnesian War, we can grasp a sense of how he viewed human
nature. Coined as the father of political realism, we can gather the idea that his
view would most likely be dark and cynical. Thucydides views humans as self
interested, selfish, and violent; without the restrictions of the nomoi (laws, values),
human beings will do anything to survive and prosper. We are able to see this view
in some key events found in his history. First, we can examine the stasis (civil war)
in Corcyra in which the social order fell and chaos ensued. Family members killed
each other, religious temples were desecrated, and all traditional values were broken.
Thucydides goes on to state that in times of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

34. Essay About Working In The Public Sector
Notes and comments on the discussion after the group presentation (November 6th):
Thoughts about working in the public sector
I do agree with the fact that after doing the same tasks for years (even a few months),
public servants become used to the routine.
Rather than aiming to improve skills and provide feedback on tasks, public servants
become part of a production line in which each employee completes their tasks and
passes the document to another employee for the next step.
In fact, a comment made during the discussion (example of administrative tasks),
some public servants are able to predict what their days will look like as they have to

Therefore, the public service is aware of issues with routine and having employees
do the same tasks for years as well as the results such as repetition and the
discouraging environment. In fact, rotational jobs have been created to address the
issue and more employees have shown interest in joining the ranks of rotational jobs.
Furthermore, I do believe that a career in the public service is rewarding. Entry level
jobs in the public service are certainly less interesting and involve repetition, however;
once the public servant begins to progress in the hierarchical structure, the job
becomes more interesting and motivation increases in order to achieve the goals
outlined by the government.
In terms of new public management and the methods from the private sector, I have
witnessed several changes that focus on increasing efficiency and productiveness. For
example, monthly reports have been shortened to include only important information
that senior management actually wants to read, on the other hand, unnecessary
graphs and tables have been removed. Also, private media companies have been
awarded a contract to create digital media content and videos for certain programs
and trade agreements as the department s in house social media officers require
expensive training on such projects.
Also, teamwork is now considered more important than the past as well as weekly

research method that is concerned with developing explanations of social
phenomena, in other words, the goal is to help to understand the world and why
things are the way they are. Therefore, it seeks to answer questions of social aspects
of our world such as why and how (Weick, 1984). Similarly, this study attempted to

Willa Cather is an author who uses similar aspects and events of her life and puts
them into her novels. This approach allows the reader to know what inspired the
events happening throughout the novel. After reading the novel O Pioneers! by
Willa Cather, I began to search for ideas leading me deeper into the meaning of the

novel is taking place, the description of Alexandra s disposition, and the dominance
Alexandra exhibits in her family.
Willa Cather decides to have the setting of the novel take place in Hanover,
Nebraska. She is very familiar with Nebraska because after her family moved from
Virginia, this is where she grew up as a young child and attended school

The gangster movie genre is one of the most popular among the modern movies
and some of the best film directors have produced some very excellent gangster
movies. For my first film analysis, I decided to analyze my favorite gangster movie
of all time. The movie that I analyzed is called Scarface and is directed by Brian De
Palma. It was released in 1983 and is still a super hit movie today. Let me go
through a short summary of the movie. The movie is focused around the life of a
man by the name of Tony Montana and depicts his rise to power from a political
refugee from Cuba to a drug warlord. In the course of the movie, Tony Montana also

Second, I want to cover the cause and effects registered in this movie. A very
reoccurring cause and effect in this movie is whenever Scarface gets angry or mad
he snorts more and more cocaine. I found this relatively funny because by the end
of the movie he is snorting a ton of cocaine that leads up to his demise. Another
effect that is shown throughout the movie is Scarface growing in success and
reputation. The cause of this is the many successful business deals that he
undertakes and engages in. Another effect is that he makes more and more
enemies along the way. This is due to his reputation and power rising. Another
cause and effect occurs when Scarface has an argument with his wife and yells at
her about her not being able to produce any children for him. This later on causes
him to fail a mission because he is not able to bring himself to kill children. A
major cause and effect in the story occurs when Scarface sees that his best friend is
with his sister. At this point Scarface kills his best friend, which causes his sister to
go into major depression, and which pushes him to indulge in even more cocaine
which leads to disaster. Next, let us discuss the primary causal agent in this film. I
believe that the primary causal agent in this film is an ideology and not a person.
The story portrays capitalism as a pursuit of happiness for the main character. If I did
not analyze this film, I may have not found that capitalism is the cause

With such a high number of volunteers, it becomes difficult to train and teach them
all, possibly leading to such problems involving loss of quality control with collecting
and transferring blood. Unfortunately, the solution to the next problem is more
volunteers. Perhaps the issue with which the ARC fails the most is resolving their
work force, specifically volunteers. The way the ARC handled disaster relief after
Hurricane Katrina, clarifies their shortcomings. After the land fall of Katrina, the
ARC mobilized 170,000+ relief workers and had gathered 2,000 volunteers before
Katrina even hit. They opened 1,470 shelters and registered 3.8 million overnight
stays. Yet, these statistics are not as pristine as one might think. Several complaints
were voiced about various, mostly busy ARC phone lines, inadequate assistance, or
assistance that came too late, and survivors unable to find ARC relief stations due to
hard to reach locations. More criticisms alleged poor communications and
bureaucratic issues. The ARC acknowledged all these problems saying they simply
were not prepared to deal with such a large disaster, and, therefore, the complexity of
the relief tasks was unprecedented, and they needed a lot more volunteers than they
thought. Not that this was too much of a problem, they received an numbers of
Americans who wanted to volunteer. Soon enough, they were processing over 35,000
claims a day. But this mass
41. Prohibition In Canada During The 1920 s
Prohibition was an act to try to cure Canada s broken society, but in several ways
was a failed experiment. What was also known as the temperance movement was a
path to hell paved with good intentions . Provinces went dry as the temperance
movement began to deprive the country of the substance that eased pain for many
and created good times and laughter for others by shutting down brewery s and
other alcohol related business , in order to satisfy the political and religious groups
who believed alcohol was breaking apart our Canadian society. Drunkenness was
believed to be a main factor in social problems, organized crime and mental/physical
health issues. This experiment was a waste to our country as the nation began to
rebel against this heavily enforced law by bootlegging, making unverified alcohol
and resenting politicians and religious groups for the dry spell that had spread
throughout the country. As Prohibition laws because stricter, bootlegging became a
secret everyone wanted in on. Bootlegging is the act of making distributing or selling
illegal goods.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People were uneducated on the fact that making alcohol from wood was a serious
danger to the human body and could cause serious damage. This unverified alcohol
killed about 10,000 people in the 1920 s. It created health problems such as organ
damage and blindness. This law also created a problem for all the alcoholics who
could not admit to their poor habit, because it would only result in an unwanted
arrest due to the burden they carried with them of alcoholism. Victims were left to
deal with their addiction without the therapy they required to heal themselves. This
meant that mental health issues was a problem for a great deal of problem whom
turned to alcohol to solve the personal problems they were facing even before
prohibition had
42. Relationships In Brave New World
In the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, relationships are free game for
anyone to have knowledge of. It s normal for everyone to know everyone else s
business. If someone is from a small town they d hear people say, Oh, that s just
how small towns are. However, in the Brave New World it s imperative that
everyone knows who s with who. It s socially acceptable in Brave New World
society to have multiple romantic and/or sexual relationships with different people.
Everyone is aware of who s with who and often people will switch partners with
others with no form of jealously present. Though, in ours it s the opposite. More
often than not relationships are kept private and dating your best friend s ex is a
scandal to most high school
43. Community Observation Paper
Conclusion
In review of the data collected for this assignment, I have gained greater insight into
the population I serve. Much of the data simply reinforced my assumptions, but
others; like the information on race, has given me a better understanding about the
population I serve and has given me greater insight into the social tension and
conflict that appears to be at the forefront of concerns for many of my students
(Moore, Bagin Gallagher, 2013, p.18). Race is always an issue for many of my
students. After reviewing the census data I noticed that most of the population
identifies themselves as one race, and the racial divide is almost 50/50 between
blacks and whites. There is also a constant reference to skin color among ... Show

St. Louis city is home to several outstanding hospitals and universities. In fact, BJC
healthcare is the largest employer in St. Louis, employing almost 25,000 people
(St. louis regional chamber, 2013). According to the 2007 2011Census, the average
household income for St. Louis city is, however, $33,652. I believe that it is safe
to assume that the majority of the individuals who live in the city do not hold
many the high paying jobs at this institution. If I look at the community through
the eyes of my students, I would probably equate success with being white as well,
simply because the majority of individuals I see in positions of success are
Caucasian. The campus of St. Louis University and Washington University are
flooded with a Caucasian majority. The Doctors and Nurses at BJC may not all be
Caucasian, but they are certainly not African American. Even at my school, the
majority of the teachers are Caucasian. In my district, it appears that the best High
Schools have the fewest number of African American teachers. I am sure that this
model holds true for elementary and middle schools within the district as well. Also,
I know of very few teachers who actually live within the boundaries of the School
District. An analysis of average household income by race, could offer a
44. Andrew Sullivan Why I Blog Analysis
In The Atlantic article Why I Blog, Andrew Sullivan explores a relatively new and
compelling medium of communication, blogging. He discusses how blogging has
changed writing from a future oriented process of writing to a rather provisional
sense of writing. Consequently, this makes the process of editing, revising, polishing
and ultimately publishing almost non existent in the realm of blogging. Sullivan goes
on to note how the usage of blogs has created a bond between the reader and the
author, and the pace at which that bond travels is seamless. Sullivan writes, And the
intimate bond this creates with readers is unlike the bond that the Times, say,
develops with its readers through the same events. Quite notably in this quote,
Sullivan explains that the formal writingoften associated with well known traditional
newspapers, such as The New York Times, seems to lack a human quality; Whereas,
blogging generates that constant flux of thoughts and paves a path of reassessment,
through feedback from readers. To blogis therefore to let go of your writing in a
way, to hold it at arm s length, open it to scrutiny, allow it to float in the ether for a
while, and to let... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Neither do I agree with Sullivan s conception that formal writing does not evoke
similar emotions of that of a blog entry. After all, it is the authors duty to induce
certain emotions in order to sway the readers, either with formal or informal writing.
Published works of writing, though superficially definite, may in actuality be
ephemeral. For instance, The Atlantic published very controversial articles: Is
Google Making Us Stupid? and Is Facebook Making Us Lonely? Many find these
claim absurd and some certainly did not hesitate to criticize. Jeff Bercovici, a Forbes
magazine senior editor,
45. Organ Systems Involved With Performing Or Assisting
With...
There are several organ systems involved with performing or assisting with the action
of typing. The integumentary system acts as a barrier to protect the fingers from
harm or pathogenic agents from the keyboard. Thick skin, such as the skin of palms,
has five skin layers including the stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum
granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum, in order to protect the fingers
from wear and tear. The integumentary system also provides protection with chemical
barriers such as the acid mantle, which retards bacterial growth; human defensin,
which kills bacteria; and cathelicidins, which prevent infections. Biological barriers
in the epidermis such as Langerhans cells, tissue macrophages that act as antigen
presenting cells, are also present. The integumentary system is also responsible for
cutaneous sensation by sending signals received from Merkel cells in the epidermis
and Meissner s corpuscles in the dermis to the brain via nerves.
The nervous system is in charge of carrying signals from the fingers to the brain,
processing information, and sending signals back from the brain to the fingers. The
nervous system s afferent nerves carry signals from the peripheral nervous system to
the central nervous system, neural integration is carried out by interneurons, and
efferent neurons send signals back from the central nervous system to the peripheral
nervous system. Neurons conduct messages in the form of nerve impulses. They
have dendrites to
46. The Oil And Natural Gas Resources
In North Dakota, the nation s second largest petroleum producing state after Texas,
the number of rigs has dropped to 65 from some 191 last year. More than 10,000
jobs have been lost. And unemployment insurance benefits have risen by a reported
115 percent (Bobb). The Bakken Formation is the oil and natural gasresource in North
Dakota. The Bakken Oil Field in North Dakota is young, at only ten to fifteen years
old. It has experienced tremendous growth and success, but is now in its first
recession or bust cycle. The drop in oil prices on a worldwide level has forced oil
companies to stop drilling. Prices of Bakken Oil topped out over one hundred
dollars per barrel, and now are in the teens. Because of the drop, it is not profitable
to drill new oil wells. The result of fluctuating prices is a continuous boom and
bust cycle in the oil industry. When oil prices drop, most people think of the
positive sides and personal benefits of inexpensive fuel. However, many people do
not take into consideration the negatives. People who rely on oil field production,
as well as supporting industries are adversely affected through job layoffs and
company bankruptcy (Bringe). As a result of lower oil and gas prices in the Bakken
Oil Field, North Dakota has experienced overbuilt housing, a financial crisis, and
resource company bankruptcy. One effect of low oil prices in North Dakota is
overbuilt housing. Developers and towns accurately predicted a boom, so many
houses and apartments
47. Motivations In Antigone
Creon s Foil
Zeus hates an arrogant boasting tongue (lines 152 153). Antigone s words, action, and
ideas contrast with Creon s to the point of these two characters having conflicting
motivations. These conflicting motivations caused the characteristics of
stubbornness, disrespect, and anger to be highlighted within Creon s character.
Overall, these conflicting motivations develop Creon as a tragic hero by emphasizing
the characteristics that all tragic heroes must have. His interactions with Antigone
develops the theme by showing their distinct views.
Creon s character is developed as a tragic hero when Antigone goes and buries her
brother, Polyneices, even though she was told not to. This situation brought out many
characteristics of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The theme of this story is that wisdom is the key to success, not an arrogant man.
In the beginning Creon was a very successful man, he had a wonderful kingdom
and a beautiful family, but he lacked wisdom in many areas of his life. His
ignorance was clearly shown when he decided to follow his own rules, rather than
the rule of the gods. His decision to not bury Polyneices led to Antigone s defiance,
and her defiance led to the death of his family. In The story, it says Creon moved
away, so the boy s blow failed to strike his father. Angry at himself, the ill fated lad
right then and there leaned into his own sword, driving half the blade between his
rib. (lines 1372 1376) This quote is describing the killing of Haemon after he saw
Antigone s body. After this scene Creon had to come home to find his wife has
killed herself, Your wife is dead blood mother of that corpse slaughtered with a
sword her wounds are very new, poor lady (lines 1428 1230). Everything that
happened corresponds directly to the theme. It shows that without wisdom, a man is
nothing. Creon was a very successful man, but arrogant, so because of his arrogance
he lost his

Blackbeard
From working for the British on a Privateer then moving to Jamaica and taking up
piracy, Blackbeard s life was full of excitement.
Blackbeard was known as Edward Teach was British. It was believed that Teach
was born in the 1680 s. He was operating in Jamaica as a privateer. Privateers are a
private, armed boat hired by the Government during the War of the Spanish
Succession or Queen Anne s War. During the war in Teach had become a very
skillful sea robber. By the end of the war in 1716 Teach as most of the privateers
moved to Jamaica to take up piracy (Kirkpatrick). When Teach became a pirate he

When Blackbeard captured the La Concorde he found satisfying so, he took the
ship as his own. Teach change the name to Queen Anne s Revenge made some
changes to the ship. He added an estimated 14 canons on the ship which change the
number from 26 to 40 canons. So now the once French cargo ship is now a 110ft,
300 ton ship with 40 canons (Hamilton 8 9). Aboard the Queen Anne s Revenge
Blackbeard never let his crew forget who was incharge. Some of Blackbeard s crew
was foolish enough to accept a crazy challenge. The challenge was to see who
could stay below deck in a room while sulfur was burning the longest. Once the the
sulfur was lit crew members were running to get above on the deck and soon all of
the crew members were out in the open gasping for fresh air. The last one to come
out was of course Blackbeard. Teach once shot one of his own crewmen over a
drunken game of poker. Once Blackbeard even said that If he didn t kill one of his
crew members once in awhile, they would forget who he was (Hamilton 16).
When Blackbeard attack he put fear into people s eyes. His long black beard
which gave him the nickname Blackbeard and his mad man s look. Charles
Johnson wrote in his book A General History of the Pyrates, published in London in
