Emerson Thematic Statement
Write a thematic statement for the essay Self Reliance . Explain how Emerson s idea of Self
Reliance is different from and similar to the common use of the term (take care of your own
needs and don t depend on others outside yourself). The essay Self Reliance is different from the
definition of only thinking of one s own needs in the sense that Emerson explains that one
should not only depend on themselves but to also not submit to the majority of ideas in society
and obey by one s own beliefs. Emerson relates being independent or Self Reliant to the genuine
feelings of an individual and how it should be taken pride of rather than pushed away by the
conformities of society. Give 5 examples of figurative language and analyze how Emerson uses
them to convey his message of self reliance (Hint: your analysis should link back to the purpose
you mention in the thematic statement above). 1 Joint Stock Company: The meaning of this word
is a company owned by multiple shareholders, but Emerson uses it in the sense of America being
bound together through majority belief systems, but individual ideas should be recognized as
well. 2 Sculpture: A sculpture is described as a carving of a 3D object, Emerson uses it as a term
for explaining the memories that make a significant deal in society and being significant
individually 3 Befriends: Acting like a friend, helping someone out, used by Emerson, he explains
that befriending represents the good that is brought into the world

Neanderthals Anthropology
The public common conception of Neanderthals is that they were the less intelligent, lumbering
cousins of old modern man who died off because they just were not enough equipped or intelligent
as their cousins. Some people think that for decades after the first discovery of their bone, homo
neanderthalensis was observed as a hairy wanton who tumbled around Ice Age Eurasia on bent
knees, finally to be exchanged by elegant, straight Cro Magnon, the true progenitor of modernistic
Europeans. Wholeheartedly, I disagree with this view. I think archaeological and research evidence
has shown that the Neanderthals lived in a hard, changing environment, and survived then
reproduced for over 250 thousand years despite the hardships they likely faced. Also,

Multicultural Education in the Classroom
The Benefits of Multicultural Education in the Classroom I have grown up with Education
being my catapult through life; I love it. I love to study children and figure out how they learn
and how our educational experiences shape us as adults. Five years ago, I found myself accepting
a position as a Toddler teacher in a government facility. To describe it simply, I was a fish out of
water. I had experience with children, but not with children so small. This experience taught me a
great deal about learningin our great world. I was amazed to witness the pure relationships between
children of all races in that little toddler room. All color aside, the children seemed to embrace each
other s differences and celebrate in their dedicated... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The substantial task of desegregation did not come without its struggles. Parents were faced with
issues of involvement in their child s education due to distance between their child s school and
home. Some schools reported vandalism and student frustration in regards to the change of scenery.
In 2001, busing for Charlotte students ended, but not without leaving a legacy. Since the
termination of busing, student test scores continue to rise, even surpassing those of other urban
school districts such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston (NPR, 2004).
Though mandatory busing ended, school districts continue to encourage the multicultural
movement by providing magnet programs for families who would like their child to attend another
school. The concept is the same as busing; however, participation is voluntary. Economically, the
gap is narrowing, balancing our communities. Forty percent of African Americans consider
themselves to be middle class, seventy five percent own their own homes, and two parent
households earn just thirteen percent less than Caucasian parents (Thernstrom, 1998). There are
improvements to be made as the economy continues to control and group together families within
the same income bracket. Many times, this binds families to certain schools with no other options
available. Statistics show that from 1993 to 2003, there was a similar outcome regarding the
schools middle class families attended. Out of a study of one

Differences Between Facts And Theories Of Math And History...
Differences in the Relationship between Facts and Theories: Math and History Theories have
been defines as integrated set of concepts formed into propositions that explain different
phenomena or events (Schneider 2), while facts as thing that is undisputed as the case or
corresponds to the truth (Mellor 110). Both facts and theories are used to generate knowledge that
can be applied in verse situations. However, the relationship between facts and theories differs
between different areas of knowledge and there is no universal law dictating it, with some areas
such as math having the theories precede the facts, while other areas such as history having the
facts precede the theories. This paper will discuss the differences in the relationship of facts and
theories of math and history using calculus and World War II respectively. First argument The first
argument analyses math and the notion that theories precede the facts in this field. This argument
uses calculus as a real life situation. Calculus is a branch of mathematics involved with the
calculation of varying quantities (Rohde et al. 1). It is considered significant because it provides
principles required to calculate quantities that cannot be calculated using other mathematical
concepts such as algebra or geometry (Rohde et al. 1; and Ledder 5 ). Most of its concepts apply
deductive thinking making it one of the most applied mathematical concepts in real life situations.
Like most mathematical branches calculus is

Personal Branding In The Workplace
Before you can learn much about how to use personal branding for a competitive edge, it s
important to have an understanding of what personal branding is. Fortunately, it s possible to take
a look at the way many successful people have used personal branding to get a feel for what it is
and how it can work for you.
Personal branding is something that has been done by a number of well known people. Some of
the most well known among them are:
* Oprah Winfrey. Think what you will about Oprah s personality, but from the time that she
branded her show with her own name and aired a number of her personal struggles in a public
way to the time that she launched her magazine, her book club and the talk show careers of Dr.
Phil and Rachael Ray, Oprah has remained true to her personal brand. ... Show more content on

Donald Trump isn t just a real estate mogul, he s also a man who worked hard, made his way to
the top and then, time and time again, has found ways of staying there. Trump hotels have a certain
reputation; so do his investment strategies that are available to almost everyone who watches his
infomercials and has an internet connection, and, of course, The Apprentice also has a large
audience simply because of all that the man has done to establish his personal brand.
In addition to Oprah and The Donald , there are a variety of others who have built their identities
and empires on a foundation of personal branding. From Madonna to Bill Gates, from Rachael Ray
(who established her brand by promising to teach others to prepare meals in 30 minutes and helping
everyone to recognize that cooking is something that everyone can do) to Richard Branson,
personal branding has proven to be a successful strategy one that can also help you to get a
competitive edge during your job

Jean Segura s Lesson In Fastball
Things looked bleak from the get go with this one, as the threat of rain made it s presence felt,
postponing the start of this one by 30 minutes. That didn t stop Jean Segura from doing what he
s been doing, as he stayed hot looking for the franchise record for hits in a season. Segura led
things off with a single, setting the table for the D backs to strike first and maybe end this thing
before the rain had a chance. Chris Owings obliged, moving Segura to 2nd with a single of his
own. After an excellent double steal, Goldy was in prime position to get the team on the board
and he did, lining a hard grounder into deep shortstop. Espinosa had no shot at home plate, and
threw onto first for the first out of the inning and a 1 0 D backs lead. That was it however, as
Castillo and Drury flew out and struck out respectively to strand Owings at 2nd. Still not a bad
way to start the game. Shelby Miller s performance today was what we expected from him after the
blockbuster trade brought him over in the off season. His fastball was explosive, touching 97mph
and his curveball had depth, getting a couple swings and misses on the night. The Nationals never
truly threatened until the bottom of the 5th, when they... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Oh yeah, Jean Segura, who beat out a single to Gio to lead off the 3rd for his 199th hit on the
season. If there s one thing Dave Stewart has gotten right, it is that. Another stolen base for
Owings, who advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher put him at 3rd and Castillo
walked on 4 straight balls to bring up Brandon Drury. He smashed a double to right, just over the
outstretched glove of the RF, scoring Owings and moving Castillo the 3rd. Yasmany Tomas was
intentionally walked to bring up Lamb against the lefty, and Gio got his out to end the inning on a
sharp grounder to 2nd. Still, it was 2 0 D backs with a solid Shelby Miller

Why Is Protein Denaturation
Protein Denaturation an Important Concept in Biology!
Biology has many topics which unfold the truths of nature in an interesting way. Protein
denaturation is one such topic which shows how denaturation of protein is found in common
household activities like cooking.
What are proteins?
Proteins are found in all living beings. They are large molecules which are composed of folded
amino acid chains. Every protein has its unique shape and functions based on its shape. Proteins are
like keys that fit into certain shaped locks around the body. Proteins are required for speeding up
biological processes, recognizing antibodies, providing substances, regulating physiological
processes, regulating genes, transporting substances and responding to signals ... Show more content

Incorporation of air bubbles and absorption of protein molecules to the air liquid interface also
cause denaturation of proteins. The extent of change in conformation of proteins is based on the
flexibility of the proteins. Highly flexible proteins denature more readily than the rigid ones do at
the air liquid interface. College Biology courses have many more exciting topics that show up a
treasure of ideas and knowledge for students who are interested in the subject. Some of them may
be intriguing and as such students need expert help from online Biology tutors who make even the
challenges in the subject easy to understand with their custom made solutions and approaches.

Effect Of Anaerobic Respiration On Yeast
In this experiment, my group designed our own experiment in which we explored anaerobic
respiration using yeast by measuring the rate of fermentation and examining the amount of carbon
dioxide produced by active yeast. We did this by obtaining one mole of sucrose, glucose, and
fructose and testing their effects they had on fermentation in a water and yeastmixture.
Fermentation is more often referred to as anaerobic respiration, which takes place in the absence
of oxygen, and yeasts are single celled fungi, often used in commercial bread and alcoholic
beverage production. Anaerobic respiration is helpful to the body because it helps produce lactic
acid in the muscles when exercising, and stops your body from overworking itself. During
alcoholic fermentation, cells break down glucoseto form ethanol and carbon dioxide, as well as two
ATP molecules. I hypothesized that if the same amount of glucose, sucrose, and fructose are added
to a solution, then the rate of fermentation will increase, varying among the sugars. My null
hypothesis stated if the same amount of sucrose, glucose, and fructose is added to the solution, then
no reaction will occur. To start our experiment, we created our control that was filled with water
heated to sixty degrees Fahrenheit, then added a yeast packet to the water and mixed the solution.
Next, we acquired one mole of sucrose, glucose, and fructose. The independent variables in our
experiment included sucrose, glucose, and fructose, while the

The Intent Behind the Enuma Elish (Creation Epic) Essay
The Intent Behind the Enuma Elish
The Enuma Elish, often known as The Creation Epic, is often considered the primary source of
Mesopotamian cosmology. However, to view the Enuma Elish as a cosmological myth obscures the
true intent of the epicГs author. The cosmological elements of the Enuma Elish are secondary to the
authorГs effort to explain the supremacy of Marduk, to justify absolute oriental monarchy, and to
defend Babylon as the axis mundi.
The Enuma Elish was composed in Babylonin the early second millennium B.C.E. The decay of
Sumerian civilization allowed the Old Babylonian Empire to become the cultural and political
center of Mesopotamia. Babylon was governed by absolute and despotic kings capable of wielding
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, the transfer of power to Babylon is illustrated by the subjugation of all gods to the rule
of Marduk. After erecting a throne for Marduk, the gods proclaim, Thou art (the most) important of
the great gods; Thy destiny is unequaled, thy command is (like that of) AnuГ–To thee we have given
kingship over the totality of the whole universe ( Enuma Elish, 36). This statement reflects the
reality of the times. During the writing of the Enuma Elish the Old Babylonian Empire weilded
supreme power in Mesopotamia.
Moreover, the recognition MardukГs absolute rule is etiological in relation to the power of the
Babylonian kings. According to Assyriologist Benjamin Foster, the Enuma Elish explains the
evolution from early government by elders to absolute monarchy. As the battle between Marduk
and Tiamat illustrates, Foster notes the catalyst for this change is portrayed as outside threat
calling for a war leader. The leader demanded, as his terms for leadership, absolute obedience, even
when the threat of war was removed (Foster, 9).
Once the writer of the Enuma Elish set forth the supremacy of the Babylonian God and the
precedent for earthly monarchy, he/she turned to the task of translating divine superiority to
earthly. The process of translating divine power to earthly power begins on line 50 of Tablet IV of
the Enuma Elish. Grateful for MardukГs leadership, the gods construct the

Productivity Improvement in Screw Type Biomas Briquettes...
Biomass densification by screw briquetting produces uniform, dense and durable solids desirable
for gasification, process heating, power generation and other heating applications which are
currently run by coal. Due to high wear rate, the screw and mould used for forming the briquettes
deteriorate leading to regular production stoppage and considerable down time losses. Hence Indian
entrepreneurs are apprehensive to adopt screwbriquetting technology in spite of its potential. In this

If the excess biomass materials are compacted to briquettes near their source they can be
transported to longer distances, stored for more duration unaffected much by humidity [9] and
put into versatile uses. There are many methods of densification available and screw briquetting
is one good choice for producing high quality briquettes, a sample of which is shown in fig 2.
These types of briquettes have uniform dimensions, high calorific value, less moisture are
desirable feed stock for gasification systems, process heating and power generation applications.
But the screw briquetting technology is having its own shortcomings like, the life of its parts like
screw and mould are very short due to high wear rate, need of skilled labors to run the machine
and wastage of energy for heating the raw material and the mould. The heating process is needed
to eliminate moisture and volatile matters and to melt the lignin content in the raw material which
acts like a binder. The quality of briquettes produced justifies the use of skilled labor. Due to high
wear rate of screw and mould particularly the screw which have very short life about 4 to 15 hrs
[10] there are regular stoppages of production, reconstruction of tools and wastage of
output.Research works are going on all over the world in designing compact briquetting machines,

Iberians And Indigenous People In The 15th To 16th Century
Death. Rape. Torture. Enslavement. These were some of the horrific tragedies Indigenous peoples
endured as Iberians during the 15th to 16th century entered and ravaged their world. As the Spanish
empire spread their colonies into the Americas, many Indigenous peoples suffered the wake of the
Spanish thirst for power and profit. Iberians depicted the Indigenous peoplesas naГЇve and inferior
because Iberians believed they were religiously and socially superior on the account of
Christianity and their assessment of a civilized culture. Caused by this superiority complex, the
Indigenous peoples were subjected to many hardships. Iberians had many preconceived ideas of
the Indigenous peoples but had accepted them as likewise subjects of the crown if they accepted
Christianity. Iberians had new found respect for the Indigenous peoples as they had established
advanced societies and ways of life, blaming bad religion as their only hamartia. Many Iberians,
specifically Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer who is falsely credited with the discovery of
the Americas, believed, ...they would easily be made Christians [because]...they had no creed
(RR, p. 11). Hence, they presumed Indigenous peoples needed guidance as they were capable of
redemption and conversion. As a result of the arrival of the Portuguese in Brazil, Iberians went as
far as to paint one of the first appearances of an Indigenous person in a European painting. In the
painting, Magi in Brazil by Vasco Fernandes

circumstances that, in order to survive, a strong father sonrelationship is vital. In Hamlet, a play

Brave New World States Research Paper
Home of the Brave America has long promised a life of ease for all citizens. Today, our
technological and scientific developments keep thousands of people, if not happy, then
comfortable. Correspondingly, the inhabitants of the World State portrayed in Aldous Huxley s
Brave New World live entirely content lifestyles due to their technological and scientific
advances. Both the World State and modern American societies share a common background,
and while Huxley s futuristic world may have advanced farther than our society has, America is
continually developing into a Brave New World. Parallels of the two worlds exist in abundance
within the novel, perhaps the most obvious examples of which lie in the desire to retain youth
and the use of drugs in both societies. World State citizens never grow old, at least not on the
surface. Huxley explains how his characters . . .keep their internal secretions artificially balanced
at a youthful equilibrium (111). The process described allows Huxley s characters to continue to
look young as their bodies grow old. Subsequently, a thirty year old character appears the same as
a sixty year old character, their skin having never wrinkled or sagged. However, the retaining of

The Pros And Cons Of Parfit
Tele transportation
Parfit is known for his hypotheticals involving a potential future technology, tele transportation.
This technology is essentially a machine that allows objects and people to teleport to other
locations. In Parfits scenarios, humanity has reached a point in its technological history that humans
now must travel to Mars in a timely matter. To avoid months aboard a spaceshuttle on a trip from
Earth to Mars, a tele transporter is utilized. Parfits tele transporter scans the body and mental states,
saves and transports the data to another location, destroys the original body, and recreates the body

He illiterates this claim by a thought experiment involving torture. In this hypothetical Williams
tells individuals that they will be tortured at noon the following day. Naturally everyone feels
uneasy about this. In order to easy this feeling, Williams tells those waiting to be tortured that
before noon the individual s entire memory will be erased. Williams argues that if memory is
necessary for personal identity, this news should put any feelings of uneasiness to rest. When
asked, the individual still reports feeling uneasy about the torture. Williams repeats this process
altering the scenario from amnesia to exchanging the memories of the individual who will be
torured for those of another. Again when prompted the individual still feels uneasy about the
torture. Williams claims that this is proof of the body being just as necessary as the memories.
However, this is not a fair analysis of the situation. When the individual is told of their torture as a
matter of fact, it is a natural reaction to feel uneasy. This is similar to feeling anxious about a
public speaking event that unexpectedly gets canceled right before taking the stage. There will
remain a sense of anxiety until the event causing that feeling is gone. Likewise, the feeling of
unrest will remain present until the moment of memory loss. This therefore fails as an example to
increase the importance of the body in regards to

Human Resource (HR) management
The design of formal systems in an organization to ensure the effective and efficient use of human
talent to accomplish the organizational goals.
As human resources have become viewed as more critical to organizational success, many
organizations have realized that it is the people in an organization that can provide a competitive

the light of the doctrine of informed consent (Thorton 2000). As patients are entitled to this
information, physicians possess a duty to disclose regarding risks and hazards, while performing
the procedure or treatment as agreed with the patient. If the doctrine of informed consent did not
exist, physicians would be able to perform medical treatments, procedures, without a patient s
consent or full knowledge of the perils of healthcare. In addition, healthcare demands trust which is
necessary between patients and physicians in order to deliver beneficial health outcomes. If the
doctrine of informed consent is not performed between the patient and physician, then trust
diminishes resulting in poor health outcomes (Roach 2014). An example of deliberate harm due to
uninformed consent exist in the research conducted in the Tuskegee experiment, where treatment
was withheld and subjects were not informed of their illness or available treatments (CDC 2013)

Stealing Carol Ann Duffy Essay
In the poem Stealing by Carol Ann Duffy the speaker attempts to steal the intangible emotions of
others. The speaker does not steal for material gain, rather for emotional gain. The speaker is
ambiguous, (henceforth referred to as he ) and appears to be answering a question. In this dramatic
monologue Duffy explores violent and self destructive behavior in order to impart the speakers
desolate attitude towards life.
Duffy uses abrupt, and violent language to communicate the discord in the speaker s life. my
breath ripped / out in rags (18 19) is a violent statement that is disjointed through enjambment; this
technique of ripping apart the sentences to different lines adds to the feeling of discontinuity in the
speakers life. This sense of discontinuity gives the reader a feeling of discontent. The self
destructive tone is mixed with a sneering attitude to create the impression of being an outcast. The

Psychopaths lack the ability to truly feel for others. He is an individualist, which is a common
theme of the Margaret Thatcher era. The speaker has an entitled outlook on life, Sometimes I

psychopaths. I wanted him, a mate / with a mind as cold as the slice of ice / within my own

mind is frozen or not moving, stationary in its ideas. Another approach to this line is that the slice

dogs to drink the medicine by hiding them inside the peanut butter that their dogs will eat up

When it comes to dog training, peanut butter dog treats are also used as a reward for your
pooches. Once they do something great or if they are following certain instructions, they

things up and keep them very much interested, a peanut butter dog treat can always be the key.
Saying such, it is very important that we provide our dogs what they really need, and that is to
give them peanut butter dog treats that will enhance their appetite. You do not need to purchase
these peanut butter dog treats at all since you can just make them personally with a touch of your

Fitness And Physical Activities Analysis
A. At the beginning of the semester I was not regularly active during my weekdays or weekends.
I would go on walks, an occasional run and use my elliptical machine at home but never on a
regular basis. Once, I started this course and the training peaks assignment, I began to
incorporate a variety of physical activities in order to make it easier for me to become active on
a regular basis. I chose physical activities that I would find enjoyable and even discovered new
physical activities that I had not tried before to be very enjoyable, like power yoga and
racquetball. The second week of using Training Peaks was when I began to be physically active
on a regular basis, which was 5 7 days a week. I made sure to invest at least half an hour in each
physical activity I would partake it. I found that I tend to spend more than half an hour doing the
physical activities that I enjoy more, like racquetball and riding my mountain bike. I started
playing racquetball and mountain biking for forty five minutes initially and no I have increased

Superman is between the ages twenty nine to thirty five while Christ was thirty three years of age.
Often times in Superman cartoons he is shown to be captured by his enemies in a crucified manner

It is peculiar as to why J.K. Rowling chose to place the scar upon Harry s forehead. The source of
thought and reason. Perhaps, it was to somehow inflict Voldemort s values and beliefs into
Harry s mind to join the Death Eaters, so that way the Lord could ensure one of his horcruxes
safety. Makes sense as to why Voldemort never killed nor could kill Harry or else he d lose a
fragment of himself. The meaning of lightning bolt has meant power evident in the God of
Gods: Zeus. Even in the anime One Piece, it is even said that the one power mankind has never
overpowered was lightning. You can draw the energy to a lightning rod however its powers are
evident. To be struck by lightning usually means death because the body cannot handle the one
billion joules of energy a bolt creates. Therefore, it is almost unheard of that Harry Potter survived
such a traumatic experience of being stuck by Voldemort s dark magic symbolically equal to
lightning. Is to withstand lightning equivalent to overcoming nature? This ability is certain to be
deemed utter madness, for in all of history human have been at the hand of nature. We cannot live
through an Ice Age, survive a hurricane nor live to tell the tale of the beauty and terror of an
arriving tsunami. Yet, with the surviving Potter it is to every magic user s dismay how he survived.

Sydney Carton Hero
The ideas of heroism in a Victorian sense are very different than those ideas of a hero in Anglo
Saxon literature. The most obvious hero in A Tale of Two Cities is Sydney Carton, but he emerges
very differently than Beowulf. It was never clearly mentioned in the novel that Carton was a hero,
so Dickens expected the reader to infer that that was so. It also wasn t until book three that Carton
became a truly dynamic characterand ultimately became the herohe sought to be. Careless and
slovenly if not debauched (Dickens 55) was how Dickens described Carton s character in book
one. He is merely a man, and a flawed man at the beginning of the novel. Carton s imperfections
and impurities set the stage for his later actions that will prove him a hero and also... Show more

My virtual child has honestly been super eye opening to me. It has thrown different real life
situations at me in which I had to respond in a specific way, showing me the difficulty of making
a decision on certain situations. I noticed that every decision that I make will affect my child in
their future reactions, ways that they interact with friends and how they act. Reese has put a

The Open Boat Essay
MAN VS. NATURE
None of them knew the color of the sky. This first sentence in Stephen Crane s The Open Boat
implies the overall relationship between the individual and nature. This sentence also implies the
limitations of anyone s perspective. The men in the boat concentrate so much on the danger they
are in, that they are oblivious and unaware to everything else; in other words, maybe lacking
experience. The Open Boat begins with a description of four men aboard a small boat on a rough
sea. The central theme of this story is about confronting Nature itself. The Open Boat is Stephen
Crane s account from an outsider s point of view of the two days spent in a small boat. The
correspondent is autobiographical in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This statement may suggest the meaningless or irrelevance of an individual s sense of self
importance against the power of nature. The human voyage into life is basically uncontrollable
and unpredictable. In the beginning, the men in the boat view nature as evil and unjust; nature
s own personal vendetta. Since the crew on a dangerous sea without hope are depicted as the
babes of the sea, we can assume that we are likely to be unknowing strangers in the universe. In
addition to the danger we face, we have to also overcome the new challenges of the waves in
daily life. These waves are most wrongfully and barbarously abrupt and tall, requiring a new leap,
and a leap. Are we powerless against nature? Can we control our own fate? Although the men
struggle to survive and make it to shore, we never really know until the end, if they are going to
drown. Their fate seems to fall into the hands of forces beyond their control. A perfect example is
when the correspondent gets caught in a current while trying to swim to shore. He is trapped by an
invisible force, a current, which he can not understand or escape. Suddenly, the current frees him,
and he is washed ashore by a huge wave. This is an unexpected turn of events being that the
strongest rower, the oiler, does not survive yet he seemed the most physically able and the most
determined to survive. The correspondent, troubled by his impressions and realities, learns that
nature is

Social Movements Of Palestine And Palestine
In the 1990s there began a significant shift in social movements in Israel and Palestine. The
history of this region has been marked by violence, inequality, and oppression for a long time.
The complicated relationships between the two main powers in this area have developed over
time and a variety of groups on both sides of the conflict have reacted with by calling for peace.
The first intifada had a huge impact on who had the ablity to voice their concerns to fight the
injustices occurring in this region. It was during this popular uprising that women s movements
first began to gain traction in both Israeland Palestine. These movements were often defined by
traditional and constricting ideals of femininity, however over time they began to branch out with a
more grassroots approach. Women s movements in Israel have many similarities to those in
Palestine and the Occupied Territories, however there are some significant differences that separate
the women involved in each of these groups and the causes they choose to support. Genderequality
is a complex issue with many implications for the modern peace movement in Israel and
Palestine, and it is crucial to note both the ways in which these groups face similar challenges
while also acknowledging the very different issues faced by Israeli and Palestinian women.
Especially in the period following the first intifada there was a growing presence of women s
groups in Israel that were often focused on peacemaking initiatives

Buddhism Diane Morgan Analysis
Buddhism has many interesting aspects, but in this paper, I will be focusing on a passage from
Essential Buddhism by Diane Morgan, about karma. In her book, karma is defined as both action
and fruits of action (page 82). Karma is what Buddhist believes your life is shaped by whether it be
good or bad Karma. Especially when it comes to reincarnation, since, with good karma you are
believed to be reincarnated into better levels of life forms. For example an animal could become
a human man. On the other hand, bad karma will downgrade your reincarnation to a less desired
level. Karma seems to be independently driven as Morgan states in the passage that There is no

For the religion karma is karma and it affects all sentient beings (page 85). Since there is not an
immediate punishment to create good karmic seeds, there is a lack of motivation for people in
the faith to follow that way of thinking. Unless you are completely devoted to the face, a
common individual would lack the will to go to such extremes in hopes they might one day
become enlightened in another life. I believe that because humans tend to make inherently bad
choices, it is impossible for an average human being who is not able to just dedicate all thoughts
and time to the Buddhist practice to achieve enough good karmic seeds to accomplish nirvana.
Especially, since it is said that you will have no recollection of your past life, making it difficult
to correct your past wrongs, or know where your karmic standing lies besides saying an animal is a
lower karmic standing than a man. Without knowing how you can improve your karmic standing or
how let go of caring about your karmic standing, Buddhism creates its own impossibility to receive
enough good karma to achieve true

The Effects Of Television And Video Game Violence On Society
On average an American is exposed to approximately 200,000 violent acts before the age of
eighteen. However, these exposures do not influence an individual to exhibit violence. Concerns
regarding whether television and video game violence has a negative effect on society by
promoting violence, dates back to the 1950 s and is still prevalent today. Studies and research
conducted on the issue are unable to prove that the two variables have any correlation to each other.
In fact, statistics demonstrate how the amount of violent crimes has decreased significantly
throughout time despite growing video gamepopularity. Lastly, in society people look for anything
to transfer the blame, especially in regards to a situation that may threaten an individual s society.
As a matter of fact, by reviewing the extensive research the conclusion was drawn stating exposure
has no effect on violence. Therefore, television and video game violence does not have a
negative effect on society. Studies and research conducted on the issue is irrelevant. Specifically,
the studies conducted fail to asses accurate information essential in the process of proving cause
and effect. Not to mention, previous studies that revealed a link between the two factors only
focused on short term effects and did not take other factors into account. In reality, children get
riled up over images they may see and are likely to act out for a short period of time. However, this
does not prove overall harm to a society

growth of the individual end user sectors the projection of demand for energy should ideally be

Similes And Metaphors In Herman Melville
Due to his experiences a sailor, Melville commonly wrote his stories based on life at sea. His
common theme of the sea attracted many literate people of the Renaissance. However, MelvilleВґs
common theme of life at sea is not the only factor which contributed to his style of writing. Herman
Melville used many different rhetorical strategies to emphasize significance in many of his pieces.
The use of similes, metaphors, and imagery supply MelvilleВґs stories with various ways to
describe certain characters or things. Alliteration, repetition, and onomatopoeia all come together to
create specific effects on words and phrases in MelvilleВґs works. The way Melville used parallel
structure, malapropisms, and long, drawn out sentences reveals the variety of ways he has
structured certain stories throughout his career. The rhetorical strategies used by Herman Melville
are what made him the great Renaissance writer he was.
The similes and metaphors Herman Melville used in his writings laid strong emphasis on certain
things. For example, Melville uses a simile in his book Cock a Doodle Doo! to show the miserable
state of the calves in the pasture. ВЁ... sharp bones sticking out like elbows... ВЁ (Melville, Cock a
Doodle Doo 28). MelvilleВґs simile about the calves also contains imagery. The statement creates
an image of sharp bones sticking out of cows in a pasture in the reader s mind. Herman Melville
also used many metaphors throughout his short stories. The metaphors can provide other

Mosaicattenuation Patterns
3) Mosaicattenuation pattern Mosaic attenuation refers to inhomogeneous attenuation seen at
inspiratory CT. This pattern may represent patchy interstitial disease, small airways disease, or

airways involvement by granulomas or fibrosis, which may lead to obstruction .In pulmonary
sarcoidosis, nodular thickening along of the airway (or bronchovascular bundle) from the lobar to

everyone is chasing the American Dream, which sells the illusion that anyone can make it all
they have to do is go to Hollywood. When the novel begins, the reader is not immediately aware
of the fact that everything is taking place in Hollywood. The story begins with imagery of war
and Tod Hackett hearing [t]he groan of leather mingled with the jangle of iron and over all beat
the tattoo of a thousand hooves (1). From there, it goes into the narrator discussing the infantry
and generals as though Tod is actually in a war torn land before everything is brought back into
perspective. The illusion of war dissipates when there is a shout telling the actors to go to Stage
Nine (1). From here this point forward, the book seems to be pointing at the artifice of the city and
many of the people in it. The concept that nothing is as it seems pervades the entire novel.
Everything, including much of the setting, is a façade. The characters even actout emotions rather
than allow themselves to actually experience them. However, laughter, grief, and surprise are often
acted rather than actually felt, rage and hatred are genuinely portrayed. These emotions often
surface because the illusion that the characters are fighting so hard to maintain is disrupted. When
the characters are not able to continue

Soccer And Politics
As noted in Gaming the World: How Sports are reshaping Global Politics and Culture soccer is
not simply a game played by millions but rather a language spoken by all. Soccer connects the
human race in ways not many things can. The sport has contributed to societal reform and political
action worldwide. As mentioned throughout chapter one sports in general have become monstrous
influences worldwide due to their power to bring individuals together. Political figures readily
attend games and it is clear that soccer plays a part in social climate in almost every nation
worldwide. Figures such as Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham have drawn fans from opposing
ends of the earth to common ground within soccer. (Ch. 1, pg. 4) Naturally within the culture

Modern American History Research Paper
History is alive
The subject of history is described as many things among high schoolers. A boring subject about
people long since dead, a class with WAY too much homework or with a professor who enjoys
giving droning lectures. Therefore, most students look at history classes as just another set of
credits to get out of the way for graduation. However, in my case, it is viewed a bit differently. I
believe history is a gift, a window into the past that gives us a chance to learn from the people who
lived before us, and to prevent the recurring of their mistakes in our world today.
At Portage Central High School I have had the opportunity to take multiple history classes based on
my interests in certain areas of the world. Modern American history,... Show more content on

It is the backbone of all other subjects, such as English, science, math, government, even world
languages. Historical knowledge provides the groundwork for all literature, it is vital in order to
understand references and allusions, as well as to grasp the point of view an author is writing
from. In essence, you can read a novel a hundred times, but you will never be able to fully
appreciate it if you have no connection to the deeply rooted historical background of the plot. Then
there are scientific discoveries. Who made them? Where did those scientists come from? What
culture led to the discoveries? What war brought about the creating of nuclear bombs? What were
the thought processes of the scientific geniuses? All these questions have answers that can be found
through the study of history. Next, is the application for math, the Pythagorean theorem, the
geometric knowledge gained from Euclid, the Greeks and Romans and how their past brought them
to be mathematicians. These people and their mathematical work are part of history. Even the
development of different forms of government is a direct result of the experiences of different
cultures, and their gifted philosophers. Language itself has survived and adapted because of wars,
conquered nations, and the changing borders of countries. The languages that have survived
through to modern day have made it because of historical

Essay On How Cuban-American Relations Have Changed Since...
For my research topic I want to look into how Cuban American relations have changed over the
last year since the Cuban Thaw began and how they will continue to change. For decades the
United States and Cuba have had a tense relationship to say the least. With the end of the Cold War,
the leadership in Cubachanging from Fidel Castro to RaГєl Castro, and the leadership in the United
Statesswitching from President Bush to President Obama, I feel that the most optimal time for
change is now. President Obama has very little time to enact meaningful change in the relationship
between the US and Cuba. I want to research how the changes he s already enacted and those he
will enact (through the time I will be in Washington D.C. and through January) will affect relations
for the decades to come. The ambitions of the Obama administration to restore full diplomatic
relations with Cuba have been carried out... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
provides a wealth of opportunity for research on this subject. Two of the most important United
Nations organizations have their headquarters in Washington D.C., the World Bank Group and the
International Monetary Fund. I believe that interning at either of these two organizations would
give me the best tools to do my research and become the most knowledgeable in the subject area
that I m interested in. The key advantage that these two organizations have is their information and
involvement in world affairs. While Cuba is not currently a member of either of these two
organizations I strongly believe that new ties will be formed and (in the case of the IMF) old ones
will be restored with the expansion of the Cuban Thaw. The other possibility for an internship I m
most interested in is the State Department. With President Obama s administration in place I
believe that the State Department would provide an excellent opportunity to delve deep in how
United States Cuban relations will change over the next year and into the

Narrative Essay About Thalassomania
Thalassomania: a passion for the sea When I was in the sixth grade my best friend, Makayla,
took me surfing for the first time. On August 29th, we went to our favorite beach Pacific City. I
fell in love with the ocean, beach, sand between my toes, and the feeling of being a surfer.
Surfing all day long with an endless amount of laughs and smiles, we brought our rental
surfboards back to the shop were we got them from. It just so happened that the shop closed at 6,
but we didn t realize that. Her mom wasn t feeling comfortable just leaving the surf boards by
the shop, so her mom bought a room at the nearest hotel. Makayla and I were very pleased with
this. The day was over, our tired bodies and hair smelling of salt, we had a great night of... Show

There was about 10, and I was so anxious. My family looked at them, and none of them were
beginner boards. Walking up to a store employee, I asked if they had any beginner boards for
sale. He walked me over to an area where the beginner boards were. To my disappointment, they
were all around $600. My family wasn t willing to pay that much, and I didn t want them to.
Discouraged, we went to a different surf shop. Where we also found out the surf boards were
about the same price. We went to out to lunch and my parents thought about what else I may
want. They offered me a compromise. Since renting a surfboard is only $25, they offered to put
money in a bank account for me just for surfing. I agreed and was very pleased with this idea. I
had some money saved up so we went back to the first surf shop we went to and I bought a
wetsuit. For the rest of the day my younger brother and I surfed with rental boards.
Leaving the beach that night, I was just as happy with the compromise my parents made for me,
as I would have been with my very own surfboard. That day taught me a lot about who I was and
wanted to be. I wanted to be a surfer girl with my very own surfboard. Who I was, was a city girl
living in the suburbs with the dream of being a surfer. I liked the idea better of having my very
own surfboard, just to feel more like a surfer. When in reality, it doesn t matter who I want to
seem like, it s who I dream to be, how I achieve my dream, and what my perception of myself

The Consequences Of The Ipod, And The Development Of Music
Everybody has seen the testy, pulled back child with music impacting out of his white earbuds, or
the young lady quickly messaging on her telephone. The adolescent of today are always drenched in
innovative headways that advance constant correspondence and moment delight, regardless of
whether through PDAs, gaming frameworks, tablets, or MP3 players. In any case, are these
innovative progressions something worth being thankful for? I trust that the development of
innovationhas contrarily affected the social associations of today s childhood since it disconnects
people from reality, prevents correspondence, and propagates the idea of quick В¬satisfaction.

Nie and D. Daylight Hillygus in their paper The Impact of Internet Use on Sociability.
The Internet really brings down the correspondence capacities of society, particularly the youthful.
At the point when our relational abilities are step by step reduced, we start investing less energy
conversing with families, encountering all the more every day stress, and feeling all the more
desolate and discouraged, composes Affonso. In our developmental teenager years, absence of
individual correspondence because of inordinate Internet use can have a general negative impact on
mental and physical wellbeing. Relational abilities are basic for everybody, yet utilization of the
Internet is undermining this advancement.
Innovation adversely influences us by propagating the mentality of prompt fulfillment. The
production of different convenient innovative gadgets has gradually imbued the possibility of
moment satisfaction. With devices like the PS3 or Nintendo DS, which enable clients to play
recreations anyplace, or phones that let us stay in contact for all intents and purposes all over and
whenever, we grow up discovering that at whatever point we need delight or happiness, it will
consequently be conceded to us.

Osmosis and Water Potential
Year 11
Emary Venter
INTRODUCTION:
The cell is the basic unit of living things, and is made up of multiple organelles. Organelles are
membrane bound subdivisions, each specialised for a specific function. This experiment looks at
the Plasma Membrane, which is a semipermeable layer surrounding the cell. It s primary job is to
control what goes in and out of the cell. Molecules can move across this membrane in either an
active movement or a passive movement. Active being that which requires energy and only occurs
when molecules are required to move against the concentration gradient. The concentration gradient

The solutions of 2% and 10% both reached dynamic equilibrium as neither had lost nor gained
water during the experiment, This indicates that the results may have been inconclusive because
two, widely various solutions could not have both reached dynamic equilibrium with the potato
cell. This leads to the idea that there were a few errors made while performing this experiment,
which most likely had an effect on the results, causing them to be non reliable. Firstly, the test
tubes had not been properly cleaned before the experiment took place. This caused a strange
smell and a colouration of the potato tuber, it may also have increased or decreased the osmotic
potential, though this cannot be known as it is not known what chemical residue may have been
left in the test tubes. Secondly, the potato cells had been left in for three days instead of the
recommended 24hrs. This mistake may have caused the soft, sogginess of the potato which
rendered it difficult to pat dry and handle. During this part of the experiment, pieces of the cells
were broken and lost down drains or stuck to the paper towel, as well as many still containing much
excess water. Because of this, the weights measured could be inaccurate and therefor unreliable.

Themes Of Love In La Belle Dame Sans Merci
How do different Poets express different attitudes to Romantic Marriage in La Belle Dame sans
Merci , My Last Duchess and Sonnet 116
By: David Hu
The theme and idea of the unforgiving tides of love is presented in a range of ways throughout
the poems in the anthology. The poets all choose to build their stories around this subject while
each choose to approach this from different perspectives and stances. La Belle Dame sans Merci
focuses on the idea of unreciprocated love; reflecting William Keat s personal feud against the
pains of love. Balance between the desires and sacrifices of love becomes one of the central ways
Keats tries to deliver his message whereas Robert Browning s My Last Duchess is associated with
the attitude and theme ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ballad adopts a unique stanza structure that shortens the last line of every quatrain which
creates an abrupt change in rhythm, helping keep the reader focused. The result is the first three
lines of every quatrain being written in Iambic tetrameter in which a line contains four feet, with
the stress falling upon the first syllable in each pair as opposed to the Iambic dimeter in the
fourth line which contains two feet with the stress falling upon the first syllable in each pair for
instance, Fast withereth too. , in line 12 . This is intended to help enhance the flow of the poem
by forcing the reader to conform to the rhythm. The differentiation in the fourth line is used by
Keats to create a feeling of emptiness and suspense. This is used by Keats to emphasize the
lovesick and sore feelings of the knight to the reader. In contrast, Robert Browning s My Last
Duchess is written in the form of a monologue through Iambic Pentameter. The monologue is one
entity divided only by the rhyming couplets. However, the flow and rhyme is partially sacrificed
because of there is so much enjambment. Browning uses this format in order to emphasize the
themes presented. For instance in line 31, Or blush, at least. She thanked men good! but thanked ,
where but thanked is a continuation of the phrase she thanked men good . Browning uses this
format in My Last Duchess

Operation Fences Noriega Summary
Surprisingly, Noriega had been credited by the DEA in 1985 for aiding Operation Pisces, which
froze $14 million from 54 different bank accounts of major drug traffickers. However, it should be
noted that those accounts were generally held by Noriega s rivals. Noriega had a partnership with
the MedellГn cartel, in which he received a percentage of every shipment through their cocaine
laboratory in the jungles of DariГ©n, just beyond the Colombian border. A leopard can t change
its spots and apparently Noriega couldn t resist double dealing, even with the likes of the MedellГn
cartel. He ordered his Panamanian Defense Forces to raid their lab in 1985 and soon regretted the
decision as the cartel put a price on his head. Noriega actually fled... Show more content on

intelligence was secretly arming the Nicaraguan rebels, in violation of a Congressional vote (the
Boland Amendment). The physical evidence from the Iran Contra scandal became undeniable
when a plane carrying supplies for the Contras was shot down on October 5, 1986 in Nicaragua.
First of all, the pilot, Eugene Hasenfus, told the press that he was working for the CIA and had
been involved in missions with them as far back as 1965. Secondly, Hasenfus had been flying a
plane that was registered to Alder Berriman Seal, aka Barry Seal, one of the most experienced
drug smuggling pilots of all time. Seal had smuggled roughly $3 to $5 billion worth of illegal
drugs into America, according to estimates by the federal government. Seal had also performed
various functions for the CIA and DEA at different times. Finally, Hasenfus s notebook featured a
phone number that was a direct line to George Bush s office.
Several Reagan administration officials tried to cover up this scandal, notably Oliver North and
his secretary who were caught shredding related documents on November 21, 1986. Just five
days later, 17 duffel bags with 1,400 pounds of cocaine were delivered to Laguna Army Airfield in
Yuma, AZ. The cocaine was hidden in the bushes off of the airstrip, but no one picked up the
delivery. Authorities later confiscated the drugs, but they were never able to determine how the
pilot mysteriously managed to land a private plane into restricted airspace

The Hollywood Sign Analysis
The Hollywood sign: fantasy and reality of an American icon by Leo Braudy and Videoland:
movie culture at the American video store by Daniel Herbert are two scholarly works that analyze
the importance of place within various aspects of the entertainment industry. In The Hollywood
Sign, Braudy provides a comprehensive history and analysis of the famous Hollywood Signand
successfully describes both the physical and metaphorical significance of the icon. Through use
of factual information, chronologically presented history, and all inclusive analysis, Braudy
shows us that the unapproachable but highly visible nature of the sign has created a sense of
prestige and glamour in the minds of those who seek it out, and this has continually allowed
business people to take advantage of those who wish to engage with it. Videoland uses a similar
method of analysis to posit ideas about the humble video store; the work argues that its past
existence as a physical place facilitated interaction between browsers and clerks, while also
maintaining a metaphorical significance in that its store geography shaped the browser s
perception of movies. While the Hollywood Sign exists as one place that can be interpreted in
various ways, video stores exist (or used too) as many places whose layout crafts an experience for
the consumer, leaving no room for interpretation. In their respective works, Braudy argues that the
metaphorical idea of the Hollywood sign contributed to the physical development of

Abortion Is Not Strictly the Woman s Private Matter Essay
Abortion Is Not Strictly the Woman s Private Matter
When it is said that abortion is just a woman s issue, we forget that there are two people involved
in creating a child. Fathers are continually overlooked and disregarded in situations involving
abortion. Many would say that a father is not affected by the woman s choice to have an abortion.
Legally, fathers are responsible for providing prenatal support for their preborn child, but have no
legal rights if the mother decides to terminate the life of that child. Many fathers have gone to court
to try to stop mothers from going through with their abortions. However, according to the courts,
when it comes to abortion, a mother s right to abortion overrides a father s objections. ... Show more

We know that the baby has a completely different circulatory system than the mother, and often a
different blood type. He or she has a completely different genetic code. We know that by the 21st
day after conception the baby s heart has begun to beat (Tanner 64). Brain waves are detectable by
day 40 (Hamlin 20), and movement also begins around this time (Arey). By eight weeks, when a
woman generally discovers she s pregnant, all body systems are present (Hooker). One doctor,
operating on an ectopic pregnancy at eight weeks, discovered an extremely alive, perfectly
developed little person, vigorously swimming in his environment with a natural swimmer s stroke.
(Rockwell 11) The preborn child is unmistakably human, unmistakably alive, and unmistakably
distinct from the mother.
Does the baby feel pain in an abortion? The pain mechanism has been found to be functioning in
the preborn child as early as 45 days after conception. Abortion does cause pain (Noonan 213,
Reinis 223 235, Collins 922 923). In the film, The Silent Scream, an actual first trimester abortion
is seen via ultrasound. The baby can be seen repeatedly moving to dodge the abortionist s suction
instrument, and her heart rate doubles. As she is dismembered, her mouth opens in a silent scream.
Abortion is violence against preborn children, and against the women in whose bodies the violence
takes place.
What about a woman s right to

Good President Qualities
My paper is going to be on the qualities the president needs to be a good president. The president
needs to be focused at all times of the presidency, and he needs to have the knowledge when to be
honest and when not to be honest with the people. Also the president should have confidence in
themselves and their ideas. Honesty, focus and confidenceis what I think a would make a good
president of the United States. A president needs to be focused on the tacks at hand the wars he
needs to be cautious of the warriors lives out there in the battlefield( Farrell para. 7). And the
president needs to look over deals and sales with countries. One example is Abraham Lincolnhe

Slavery Vs American Slavery
After all of my history classes throughout school, I never seemed to completely understand what all
actually happened during the slavery years throughout the world. Reading these selections has
given me a much better understanding of slavery and the story behind it all. In part one of the
assignment, there were many things that seemed to interest me that I did not know about. One
thing is how the African slaverywas much more different than the American slavery. The passage
states that when the Europeans arrived, slavery had already existed on the continent, but little
did they know the real way slaves were treated in America. The African slaves were allowed to
own land, get married, and own slaves even though they were one themselves. When they were
brought over to America, they learned the brutality of American slavery. They tried to recruit
Native Americans but many died during transportation due to small pox, tuberculosis, and
diphtheria. The Europeans did end up finding a way to fix their labor shortages and that was by
importing slaves from Africa. Later after that, 105 colonist landed in Jamestown and by the next
year, 500 settlers had come to join I had always thought that the laws were quickly and heavily
forced by the land owners but in fact I learned that it actually gradually proceeded, one person, one
law, and one colony at a time. Around this time is when slavery became highly popular around the
South. In part two, there were also many facts that were

Homestuck Research Paper
Andrew Hussie: Taking Comics to a Different Level As someone who loves bright, colorful
visuals and dramatic design, graphic novels and comic books are some of my favorite things to
read. Web comics are one of the more accessible types of comics, since they are generally free
and can be read entirely online, and they usually take the same form paper comics have taken for
years: images arranged in a grid on one standard size page. While this layout of comics is
perfectly fine and has been for decades, it doesn t take full advantage of the web format. Coded
webpages present a nearly endless number of ways to manipulate the images, allowing artists to tell
their stories in new and exciting ways, and yet most people stick to the same format that s... Show

That process is more than exemplified in his making of his most successful comic, Homestuck. At
over 8000 pages long, with over 800,000 words of narration and dialogue, Homestuck is the longest
web comic in existence, and according to Hussie was started with little more planning than the
thought it s a story about kids in houses . Along with this, Homestuck is a story that goes beyond
the traditional comic format, becoming a truly multi media experience spanning the entire internet
and beyond, influenced by the massive community that became involved with it over its 7 year
span. Besides just still images, Hussie s comic is filled with colorful animations in many of its
panels, along with videos and interactive games accompanied by a wide array of music. In fact,
over 26 albums total were produced by Hussie s web store turned record label for the comic. This
is something that, while other artists had likely attempted it in some way, no other comic had had
such a large success with, and in turn had such a wide influence on the web comic community.
Beyond just the images on the page, Hussie also manipulates webpages themselves, going as far as
to completely change the color and format of the page to manipulate the narrative mechanic and
add to the story, as shown in the pictures

  • 2. Emerson Thematic Statement Write a thematic statement for the essay Self Reliance . Explain how Emerson s idea of Self Reliance is different from and similar to the common use of the term (take care of your own needs and don t depend on others outside yourself). The essay Self Reliance is different from the definition of only thinking of one s own needs in the sense that Emerson explains that one should not only depend on themselves but to also not submit to the majority of ideas in society and obey by one s own beliefs. Emerson relates being independent or Self Reliant to the genuine feelings of an individual and how it should be taken pride of rather than pushed away by the conformities of society. Give 5 examples of figurative language and analyze how Emerson uses them to convey his message of self reliance (Hint: your analysis should link back to the purpose you mention in the thematic statement above). 1 Joint Stock Company: The meaning of this word is a company owned by multiple shareholders, but Emerson uses it in the sense of America being bound together through majority belief systems, but individual ideas should be recognized as well. 2 Sculpture: A sculpture is described as a carving of a 3D object, Emerson uses it as a term for explaining the memories that make a significant deal in society and being significant individually 3 Befriends: Acting like a friend, helping someone out, used by Emerson, he explains that befriending represents the good that is brought into the world ... • 3. Neanderthals Anthropology The public common conception of Neanderthals is that they were the less intelligent, lumbering cousins of old modern man who died off because they just were not enough equipped or intelligent as their cousins. Some people think that for decades after the first discovery of their bone, homo neanderthalensis was observed as a hairy wanton who tumbled around Ice Age Eurasia on bent knees, finally to be exchanged by elegant, straight Cro Magnon, the true progenitor of modernistic Europeans. Wholeheartedly, I disagree with this view. I think archaeological and research evidence has shown that the Neanderthals lived in a hard, changing environment, and survived then reproduced for over 250 thousand years despite the hardships they likely faced. • 4. Multicultural Education in the Classroom The Benefits of Multicultural Education in the Classroom I have grown up with Education being my catapult through life; I love it. I love to study children and figure out how they learn and how our educational experiences shape us as adults. Five years ago, I found myself accepting a position as a Toddler teacher in a government facility. To describe it simply, I was a fish out of water. I had experience with children, but not with children so small. This experience taught me a great deal about learningin our great world. I was amazed to witness the pure relationships between children of all races in that little toddler room. All color aside, the children seemed to embrace each other s differences and celebrate in their dedicated... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The substantial task of desegregation did not come without its struggles. Parents were faced with issues of involvement in their child s education due to distance between their child s school and home. Some schools reported vandalism and student frustration in regards to the change of scenery. In 2001, busing for Charlotte students ended, but not without leaving a legacy. Since the termination of busing, student test scores continue to rise, even surpassing those of other urban school districts such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston (NPR, 2004). Though mandatory busing ended, school districts continue to encourage the multicultural movement by providing magnet programs for families who would like their child to attend another school. The concept is the same as busing; however, participation is voluntary. Economically, the gap is narrowing, balancing our communities. Forty percent of African Americans consider themselves to be middle class, seventy five percent own their own homes, and two parent households earn just thirteen percent less than Caucasian parents (Thernstrom, 1998). There are improvements to be made as the economy continues to control and group together families within the same income bracket. Many times, this binds families to certain schools with no other options available. Statistics show that from 1993 to 2003, there was a similar outcome regarding the schools middle class families attended. Out of a study of one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Differences Between Facts And Theories Of Math And History... Differences in the Relationship between Facts and Theories: Math and History Theories have been defines as integrated set of concepts formed into propositions that explain different phenomena or events (Schneider 2), while facts as thing that is undisputed as the case or corresponds to the truth (Mellor 110). Both facts and theories are used to generate knowledge that can be applied in verse situations. However, the relationship between facts and theories differs between different areas of knowledge and there is no universal law dictating it, with some areas such as math having the theories precede the facts, while other areas such as history having the facts precede the theories. This paper will discuss the differences in the relationship of facts and theories of math and history using calculus and World War II respectively. First argument The first argument analyses math and the notion that theories precede the facts in this field. This argument uses calculus as a real life situation. Calculus is a branch of mathematics involved with the calculation of varying quantities (Rohde et al. 1). It is considered significant because it provides principles required to calculate quantities that cannot be calculated using other mathematical concepts such as algebra or geometry (Rohde et al. 1; and Ledder 5 ). Most of its concepts apply deductive thinking making it one of the most applied mathematical concepts in real life situations. Like most mathematical branches calculus is ... • 7. Personal Branding In The Workplace Before you can learn much about how to use personal branding for a competitive edge, it s important to have an understanding of what personal branding is. Fortunately, it s possible to take a look at the way many successful people have used personal branding to get a feel for what it is and how it can work for you. Personal branding is something that has been done by a number of well known people. Some of the most well known among them are: * Oprah Winfrey. Think what you will about Oprah s personality, but from the time that she branded her show with her own name and aired a number of her personal struggles in a public way to the time that she launched her magazine, her book club and the talk show careers of Dr. Phil and Rachael Ray, Oprah has remained true to her personal brand. ... • 8. Jean Segura s Lesson In Fastball Things looked bleak from the get go with this one, as the threat of rain made it s presence felt, postponing the start of this one by 30 minutes. That didn t stop Jean Segura from doing what he s been doing, as he stayed hot looking for the franchise record for hits in a season. Segura led things off with a single, setting the table for the D backs to strike first and maybe end this thing before the rain had a chance. Chris Owings obliged, moving Segura to 2nd with a single of his own. After an excellent double steal, Goldy was in prime position to get the team on the board and he did, lining a hard grounder into deep shortstop. Espinosa had no shot at home plate, and threw onto first for the first out of the inning and a 1 0 D backs lead. That was it however, as Castillo and Drury flew out and struck out respectively to strand Owings at 2nd. Still not a bad way to start the game. Shelby Miller s performance today was what we expected from him after the blockbuster trade brought him over in the off season. His fastball was explosive, touching 97mph and his curveball had depth, getting a couple swings and misses on the night. The Nationals never truly threatened until the bottom of the 5th, when they... He smashed a double to right, just over the outstretched glove of the RF, scoring Owings and moving Castillo the 3rd. Protein denaturation is one such topic which shows how denaturation of protein is found in common household activities like cooking. What are proteins? Proteins are found in all living beings. They are large molecules which are composed of folded amino acid chains. Every protein has its unique shape and functions based on its shape. Proteins are like keys that fit into certain shaped locks around the body. Proteins are required for speeding up biological processes, recognizing antibodies, providing substances, regulating physiological processes, regulating genes, transporting substances and responding to signals ... • 10. Effect Of Anaerobic Respiration On Yeast In this experiment, my group designed our own experiment in which we explored anaerobic respiration using yeast by measuring the rate of fermentation and examining the amount of carbon dioxide produced by active yeast. We did this by obtaining one mole of sucrose, glucose, and fructose and testing their effects they had on fermentation in a water and yeastmixture. Fermentation is more often referred to as anaerobic respiration, which takes place in the absence of oxygen, and yeasts are single celled fungi, often used in commercial bread and alcoholic beverage production. Anaerobic respiration is helpful to the body because it helps produce lactic acid in the muscles when exercising, and stops your body from overworking itself. During alcoholic fermentation, cells break down glucoseto form ethanol and carbon dioxide, as well as two ATP molecules. I hypothesized that if the same amount of glucose, sucrose, and fructose are added to a solution, then the rate of fermentation will increase, varying among the sugars. My null hypothesis stated if the same amount of sucrose, glucose, and fructose is added to the solution, then no reaction will occur. To start our experiment, we created our control that was filled with water heated to sixty degrees Fahrenheit, then added a yeast packet to the water and mixed the solution. Next, we acquired one mole of sucrose, glucose, and fructose. The independent variables in our experiment included sucrose, glucose, and fructose, while the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. The Intent Behind the Enuma Elish (Creation Epic) Essay The Intent Behind the Enuma Elish The Enuma Elish, often known as The Creation Epic, is often considered the primary source of Mesopotamian cosmology. However, to view the Enuma Elish as a cosmological myth obscures the true intent of the epicГs author. The cosmological elements of the Enuma Elish are secondary to the authorГs effort to explain the supremacy of Marduk, to justify absolute oriental monarchy, and to defend Babylon as the axis mundi. The Enuma Elish was composed in Babylonin the early second millennium B.C.E. The decay of Sumerian civilization allowed the Old Babylonian Empire to become the cultural and political center of Mesopotamia. Babylon was governed by absolute and despotic kings capable of wielding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, the transfer of power to Babylon is illustrated by the subjugation of all gods to the rule of Marduk. After erecting a throne for Marduk, the gods proclaim, Thou art (the most) important of the great gods; Thy destiny is unequaled, thy command is (like that of) AnuГ–To thee we have given kingship over the totality of the whole universe ( Enuma Elish, 36). This statement reflects the reality of the times. During the writing of the Enuma Elish the Old Babylonian Empire weilded supreme power in Mesopotamia. Moreover, the recognition MardukГs absolute rule is etiological in relation to the power of the Babylonian kings. According to Assyriologist Benjamin Foster, the Enuma Elish explains the evolution from early government by elders to absolute monarchy. As the battle between Marduk and Tiamat illustrates, Foster notes the catalyst for this change is portrayed as outside threat calling for a war leader. The leader demanded, as his terms for leadership, absolute obedience, even when the threat of war was removed (Foster, 9). Once the writer of the Enuma Elish set forth the supremacy of the Babylonian God and the precedent for earthly monarchy, he/she turned to the task of translating divine superiority to earthly. Biomass densification by screw briquetting produces uniform, dense and durable solids desirable for gasification, process heating, power generation and other heating applications which are currently run by coal. Due to high wear rate, the screw and mould used for forming the briquettes deteriorate leading to regular production stoppage and considerable down time losses. Hence Indian entrepreneurs are apprehensive to adopt screwbriquetting technology in spite of its potential. These types of briquettes have uniform dimensions, high calorific value, less moisture are desirable feed stock for gasification systems, process heating and power generation applications. But the screw briquetting technology is having its own shortcomings like, the life of its parts like screw and mould are very short due to high wear rate, need of skilled labors to run the machine and wastage of energy for heating the raw material and the mould. The heating process is needed to eliminate moisture and volatile matters and to melt the lignin content in the raw material which acts like a binder. The quality of briquettes produced justifies the use of skilled labor. Due to high wear rate of screw and mould particularly the screw which have very short life about 4 to 15 hrs [10] there are regular stoppages of production, reconstruction of tools and wastage of output.Research works are going on all over the world in designing compact briquetting machines, ... These were some of the horrific tragedies Indigenous peoples endured as Iberians during the 15th to 16th century entered and ravaged their world. As the Spanish empire spread their colonies into the Americas, many Indigenous peoples suffered the wake of the Spanish thirst for power and profit. Iberians depicted the Indigenous peoplesas naГЇve and inferior because Iberians believed they were religiously and socially superior on the account of Christianity and their assessment of a civilized culture. Caused by this superiority complex, the Indigenous peoples were subjected to many hardships. Iberians had many preconceived ideas of the Indigenous peoples but had accepted them as likewise subjects of the crown if they accepted Christianity. Iberians had new found respect for the Indigenous peoples as they had established advanced societies and ways of life, blaming bad religion as their only hamartia. Many Iberians, specifically Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer who is falsely credited with the discovery of the Americas, believed, ...they would easily be made Christians [because]...they had no creed (RR, p. 11). Hence, they presumed Indigenous peoples needed guidance as they were capable of redemption and conversion. • 32. Social Movements Of Palestine And Palestine In the 1990s there began a significant shift in social movements in Israel and Palestine. The history of this region has been marked by violence, inequality, and oppression for a long time. The complicated relationships between the two main powers in this area have developed over time and a variety of groups on both sides of the conflict have reacted with by calling for peace. The first intifada had a huge impact on who had the ablity to voice their concerns to fight the injustices occurring in this region. It was during this popular uprising that women s movements first began to gain traction in both Israeland Palestine. These movements were often defined by traditional and constricting ideals of femininity, however over time they began to branch out with a more grassroots approach. Women s movements in Israel have many similarities to those in Palestine and the Occupied Territories, however there are some significant differences that separate the women involved in each of these groups and the causes they choose to support. Genderequality is a complex issue with many implications for the modern peace movement in Israel and Palestine, and it is crucial to note both the ways in which these groups face similar challenges while also acknowledging the very different issues faced by Israeli and Palestinian women. Especially in the period following the first intifada there was a growing presence of women s groups in Israel that were often focused on peacemaking initiatives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Buddhism Diane Morgan Analysis Buddhism has many interesting aspects, but in this paper, I will be focusing on a passage from Essential Buddhism by Diane Morgan, about karma. In her book, karma is defined as both action and fruits of action (page 82). Karma is what Buddhist believes your life is shaped by whether it be good or bad Karma. Especially when it comes to reincarnation, since, with good karma you are believed to be reincarnated into better levels of life forms. For example an animal could become a human man. On the other hand, bad karma will downgrade your reincarnation to a less desired level. Karma seems to be independently driven as Morgan states in the passage that There is no punishing god ... Since there is not an immediate punishment to create good karmic seeds, there is a lack of motivation for people in the faith to follow that way of thinking. Unless you are completely devoted to the face, a common individual would lack the will to go to such extremes in hopes they might one day become enlightened in another life. I believe that because humans tend to make inherently bad choices, it is impossible for an average human being who is not able to just dedicate all thoughts and time to the Buddhist practice to achieve enough good karmic seeds to accomplish nirvana. Especially, since it is said that you will have no recollection of your past life, making it difficult to correct your past wrongs, or know where your karmic standing lies besides saying an animal is a lower karmic standing than a man. Without knowing how you can improve your karmic standing or how let go of caring about your karmic standing, Buddhism creates its own impossibility to receive enough good karma to achieve true ... • 34. The Effects Of Television And Video Game Violence On Society On average an American is exposed to approximately 200,000 violent acts before the age of eighteen. However, these exposures do not influence an individual to exhibit violence. Concerns regarding whether television and video game violence has a negative effect on society by promoting violence, dates back to the 1950 s and is still prevalent today. Studies and research conducted on the issue are unable to prove that the two variables have any correlation to each other. In fact, statistics demonstrate how the amount of violent crimes has decreased significantly throughout time despite growing video gamepopularity. Lastly, in society people look for anything to transfer the blame, especially in regards to a situation that may threaten an individual s society. As a matter of fact, by reviewing the extensive research the conclusion was drawn stating exposure has no effect on violence. Therefore, television and video game violence does not have a negative effect on society. Studies and research conducted on the issue is irrelevant. Specifically, the studies conducted fail to asses accurate information essential in the process of proving cause and effect. Not to mention, previous studies that revealed a link between the two factors only focused on short term effects and did not take other factors into account. In reality, children get riled up over images they may see and are likely to act out for a short period of time. However, this does not prove overall harm to a society ... His common theme of the sea attracted many literate people of the Renaissance. However, MelvilleВґs common theme of life at sea is not the only factor which contributed to his style of writing. Herman Melville used many different rhetorical strategies to emphasize significance in many of his pieces. The use of similes, metaphors, and imagery supply MelvilleВґs stories with various ways to describe certain characters or things. Alliteration, repetition, and onomatopoeia all come together to create specific effects on words and phrases in MelvilleВґs works. The way Melville used parallel structure, malapropisms, and long, drawn out sentences reveals the variety of ways he has structured certain stories throughout his career. The rhetorical strategies used by Herman Melville are what made him the great Renaissance writer he was. The similes and metaphors Herman Melville used in his writings laid strong emphasis on certain things. For example, Melville uses a simile in his book Cock a Doodle Doo! to show the miserable state of the calves in the pasture. ВЁ... sharp bones sticking out like elbows... Everyone Is Chasing The American Dream In an age where reality television is the way to become a break out star, Nathanael West s The Day of the Locust seems to be an accurate precursor of what would be to come. In the novel, everyone is chasing the American Dream, which sells the illusion that anyone can make it all they have to do is go to Hollywood. When the novel begins, the reader is not immediately aware of the fact that everything is taking place in Hollywood. The story begins with imagery of war and Tod Hackett hearing [t]he groan of leather mingled with the jangle of iron and over all beat the tattoo of a thousand hooves (1). From there, it goes into the narrator discussing the infantry and generals as though Tod is actually in a war torn land before everything is brought back into perspective. The illusion of war dissipates when there is a shout telling the actors to go to Stage Nine (1). From here this point forward, the book seems to be pointing at the artifice of the city and many of the people in it. The concept that nothing is as it seems pervades the entire novel. Everything, including much of the setting, is a faГ§ade. The characters even actout emotions rather than allow themselves to actually experience them. However, laughter, grief, and surprise are often acted rather than actually felt, rage and hatred are genuinely portrayed. Firstly, the test tubes had not been properly cleaned before the experiment took place. This caused a strange smell and a colouration of the potato tuber, it may also have increased or decreased the osmotic potential, though this cannot be known as it is not known what chemical residue may have been left in the test tubes. Secondly, the potato cells had been left in for three days instead of the recommended 24hrs. In The Hollywood Sign, Braudy provides a comprehensive history and analysis of the famous Hollywood Signand successfully describes both the physical and metaphorical significance of the icon. Through use of factual information, chronologically presented history, and all inclusive analysis, Braudy shows us that the unapproachable but highly visible nature of the sign has created a sense of prestige and glamour in the minds of those who seek it out, and this has continually allowed business people to take advantage of those who wish to engage with it. Videoland uses a similar method of analysis to posit ideas about the humble video store; the work argues that its past existence as a physical place facilitated interaction between browsers and clerks, while also maintaining a metaphorical significance in that its store geography shaped the browser s perception of movies. While the Hollywood Sign exists as one place that can be interpreted in various ways, video stores exist (or used too) as many places whose layout crafts an experience for the consumer, leaving no room for interpretation. In part one of the assignment, there were many things that seemed to interest me that I did not know about. One thing is how the African slaverywas much more different than the American slavery. The passage states that when the Europeans arrived, slavery had already existed on the continent, but little did they know the real way slaves were treated in America. The African slaves were allowed to own land, get married, and own slaves even though they were one themselves. When they were brought over to America, they learned the brutality of American slavery. They tried to recruit Native Americans but many died during transportation due to small pox, tuberculosis, and diphtheria. The Europeans did end up finding a way to fix their labor shortages and that was by importing slaves from Africa. Later after that, 105 colonist landed in Jamestown and by the next year, 500 settlers had come to join I had always thought that the laws were quickly and heavily forced by the land owners but in fact I learned that it actually gradually proceeded, one person, one law, and one colony at a time. Homestuck Research Paper Andrew Hussie: Taking Comics to a Different Level As someone who loves bright, colorful visuals and dramatic design, graphic novels and comic books are some of my favorite things to read. Web comics are one of the more accessible types of comics, since they are generally free and can be read entirely online, and they usually take the same form paper comics have taken for years: images arranged in a grid on one standard size page. While this layout of comics is perfectly fine and has been for decades, it doesn t take full advantage of the web format. Coded webpages present a nearly endless number of ways to manipulate the images, allowing artists to tell their stories in new and exciting ways, and yet most people stick to the same format that s... At over 8000 pages long, with over 800,000 words of narration and dialogue, Homestuck is the longest web comic in existence, and according to Hussie was started with little more planning than the thought it s a story about kids in houses . Along with this, Homestuck is a story that goes beyond the traditional comic format, becoming a truly multi media experience spanning the entire internet and beyond, influenced by the massive community that became involved with it over its 7 year span. Besides just still images, Hussie s comic is filled with colorful animations in many of its panels, along with videos and interactive games accompanied by a wide array of music. In fact, over 26 albums total were produced by Hussie s web store turned record label for the comic. This is something that, while other artists had likely attempted it in some way, no other comic had had such a large success with, and in turn had such a wide influence on the web comic community. Beyond just the images on the page, Hussie also manipulates webpages themselves, going as far as to completely change the color and format of the page to manipulate the narrative mechanic and add to the story, as shown in the pictures ...
