The Magdalen With The Smoking Flame Summary
The Magdalen with the Smoking Flame is a work of art done by Georges De La Tour. It was
completed in the year 1640 using oil paint on canvas in France, and it is now located at the Los
Angeles County Museum of Art. This painting is of a woman, possibly pregnant, sitting leaning on a
table her head rested on one hand. She also has a skull on her lap and the other hand placed on it. In
the back ground there is a small stack of books and candlelight. More than anything on this painting, it
is focused on the woman state of mind and heart rather than the skull or anything else. The simple
arrangement of how the artist used vertical and horizontal shapes draws the viewer really close into
the Magdalen s thoughts. The skull and the books purpose is to set the mood in what the woman might
be feeling. The focal point of the entire painting seems to be the candle because not only is it bright,
but the woman is gazing profoundly into it. Everything in the painting is smoothed surface. The
painter did not use texture in the paint but only in very few areas like in the oil of the candle. The
tones in this painting are warm. There are a lot of browns and ambers. A few cool colors were used to
define the shadows of the shapes with blue. The attention getter is the candle light. It s almost hard to
ignore because it is so bright. The second brightest thing in the painting is the woman s shirt, but even
that is not as bright because of all the shadows and creases in it. Another reason why

Accounting And Disclosure Requirements Of Leases
We know businesses can acquire assets differently, they can buy it, or if they do not have enough fund
to purchase the asset, they can lease it. Lease arrangements give the lessee access to the assets for long
enough time and in return they need to make periodic payments to the lessor. The main advantage of
leasing is to acquire the necessary equipment or assets, use that assets to generate revenue but without
tying up a big amount of cash upfront. International Accounting Standard Board (IASB) introduced
new guidelines for accounting and disclosure requirements of leases. IFRS 16 Leases will replace IAS
17 Leases, and related Interpretations, and will be effective from 1 January 2019.
We can distinguish leases either financial or operational. In existing lease accounting practices, we
treat financial leases similar to purchase with cash or on account. On the other hand operational leases
do not recognised as an asset in the books of the business but we do deduct lease payments as an
expense and it showed up in the income statement. Over the time, the use of operating income
increased so much that the academician, regulators and practitioners raised concerns to potential
opportunistic use of it by businesses (Altamuro, Johnston, Pandit and Zhang, 2014). In general
companies who use operating lease ends up with improved return on assets and debt to equity ratio
and therefore better solidity comparing to the companies who do not use operating leases, instead they

Comparing Bronte s Macbeth And Wuthering Heights

Macbeth and Wuthering Heights While reading Macbeth and Wuthering Heights I discovered these
pieces of literature are very similar. Both stories have complicated relationships with the main
characters. The destructive love within the relationships in Shakespeare s Macbeth and Bronte s
Wuthering Heights, are presented through sexism, jealousy, and betrayal. These authors show those
characteristics as in today s time. It is very ironic how both of these stories portray the same thing. The
first thing they show is how and what happens in a relationship when women get control. In Macbeth
Lady Macbeth controls Macbeth by rhetorical manipulation as stated by Linda Hutcheon. Lady

He took Catherine s heart and hand in marriage and she told Nelly It would degrade me to marry
Heathcliff.. (Bronte 81). That choice that she made made Heathcliff leave and come back and make
Isabella, Hareton, and Linton miserable. Catherine also sees Edgar only for money and all the wrong
reasons she tells Nelly And he will be rich, and I shall like to be the greatest woman of the
neighbourhood and I shall be proud of having such a husband. (Bronte 79). The insiders that ruined
this relationship were really Edgar and Catherine from marrying each other.
In a relationship most of the time it s a must to show your manhood. In Macbeth, Macbeth shows his
manhood in the first scene by killing his enemy gruesomely. It was described by the captain as Til he
unseamed him from the nave to th chops and fix d his head upon our battlements (1.1 22 24). Macbeth
also showed his manliness when he fought the English army on his own in act 5 scene 3.
In Wuthering Heights Heathcliff shows his masculinity by leaving and coming back three years after
Edgar and Catherine get married. When Heathcliff came back he had money and higher education.
Heathcliff was described as tall athletic well formed man with upright carriage (Bronte 105) by Nelly.
Heathcliff inherits Wuthering Heights after Hindley dies. He also buys Edgar s Thrushcross

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of A Few Of The Speeches By...
The term terrorism is notoriously hard to explain as there is no international consensus on the
definition legally or academically thus is often used to mean many different things by pundits,
politicians and the media. A highly complex phenomenon, terrorism stands at the forefront of
international agendas, and the term is associated with a wide variety of groups all over the world. So
the question is what constitutes terrorism? The dictionary definition is violence or threat of violence
against non combatants or civilians, usually motivated by religious or political ideologies. This paper
aims to do a critical discourse analysis of a few of the speeches by US Leaders George Bush and
Barrack Obama in the aftermath of the attacks on the world trade centre in 2001. It draws on Schiffrin
et al (2003), Foucault s and Van Dijk s concepts of critical discourse analysis and aims to reveal how
Bush and Obama carefully selected emotionally charged language, expressions and gestures to create
fear and panic in the world and how they projected terrorism negatively all the while advocating and
justifying similar strategies and calling it anti terrorism.
Terrorism is a highly complex phenomenon with over one hundred definitions all over the world, it
stands at the forefront of many international agendas. The complexity of this term means it can be
used to describe many different things, depending on the pundits, politicians or media outlet s views
and ideologies. In simple terms, A

Gender Stereotypes In The Bloody Chamber
In The Bloody Chamber, The Tiger s Bride and The Company of Wolves, Carter draws attention to her
agenda of undercutting the stereotypical portrayal of women as victims and men as oppressors. She
does this through the rewriting of patriarchal narratives, where women are often portrayed as the
powerless damsel in distress and the weaker sex by introducing feminist elements such as independent
and strong willed women as well as undercutting male power and authority. Through her stories,
Carter then gives a voice to express the experiences of women, making such experiences known to
society where they have been previously under represented.
In The Bloody Chamber, Carter undercuts gender stereotypes that are often associated with the
portrayal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The opening line of The Tiger s Bride, My father lost me to The Beast at cards connotes the idea of the
protagonist as a commodity that can be lost and passed from hand to hand . She is thus reduced to a
mute object that can be bartered with by her father, reflecting the idea of women as mere commodities
who are being victimized under a patriarchal system. However Carter portrays the protagonist as
refusing to let herself by victimized by the patriarchy, as seen in [she] let out a raucous guffaw . Her
behavior is then a reflection of her refusal to be objectified and judged by patriarchy and in doing so,
undercuts male power and authority. In The Bloody Chamber, through the character Jean Yves, Carter
quite literally subverts the male gaze by making Jean Yves blind and in doing so, thus puts men and
women on an equal footing where neither one gender is seen as more powerful over the other. It is
also notable that in all three tales, the protagonists are not explicitly named and this can be seen as a
deliberate attempt on Carter s part as a way of refusing to objectify her protagonists by imposing a
fixed identity on

Influences On The Public Perception Of Missing Children
There are many missing children in the world today. We as a society go about our daily activities not
thinking about the criminal actions of others. We are not faced with the concerns of crimes unless we
are the victims. We depend on communication outlets to stay updated with local, state and
international events. The actual number of children missing is alarming and yet unknown. Influences
on the public perception The writer of this chapter pinpointed the views of the world in a great way.
There are many influences on the public perception of missing children. During the reading, it was
noted that media coverage has a significant impact on society s point of view. News media focus on
sensational cases to determine the public s perception of child abductions. (Kappeler Potter, p.54) This
influence can be positive and negative creating fears and myths. The news stories and developing
information regarding missing children determines the interest level of viewers. It has been
determined that society craves drama and action in the news and entertainment. The horror stories
make great media attention. Therefore, the idea of pictures of missing children allows viewers to relate
on a visual level. (Kappeler Potter, p.54) It was enlightening to see that facts presented in the media
can be distorting. The creation of stereotypes regarding the offenders can be misleading as well. The
first assumptions we have as a community of the suspects; naturally, they are

Scotland s Rural Economic Crisis
A rural economic crisis occurred as there was a decline of people working the land. The highland
population between the years of 1921 1930 witnessed a decrease of 13.8% in the highland counties
alone. This can be explained through an increase in emigration, loss of life from World War One and a
general decline in agriculture. The 1920 s saw an overall increase in emigration from Scotland, many
of these came from rural areas. An explanation into rural emigration could be in response to the land
raids that were occurring during this time. Land raids were carried out mainly by ex servicemen who
were under the illusion, they would be rewarded in land for war efforts. Therefore, showing the impact
of the interwar years upon rural society in Scotland. Another industry that suffered post war was the

However, during the interwar years, it became evident there was problems. The cost of fuel was rising
and fishermen struggled to keep up with the rising cost, while trying to restore their boats to a pre war
state. Significantly, the fishing industry lost their traditional export markets in Germany, Russia and
many Eastern European countries. Therefore, resulting in a decline of Scotland s fishing industry. It is
evident, Scotland s economy was in ruins after the war, the reliance upon staple industries witnessed a
domino effect that spread throughout Scotland. Which resulted in the interwar depression. However, it
also had a substantial impact upon Scotland s employment levels.
The interwar depression witnessed the emergence of mass unemployment. Scotland s recession was
deeper and more sustained than in England, resulting in higher levels of unemployment and a social
crisis. Notably, unemployment levels varied across industries, regions and demographic groups.
Unemployment rates were twice as high for men than they were for women, males aged between 55

1984 Controlling The Mind Analysis
In 1984 by George Orwell, Big Brother uses fear and lies to control its citizens and their thoughts.
They are constantly being monitored using Telescreens, so everything done or said is recorded by Big
Brother and used against them. O Brien, an inner party member, tricks Winston Smith into believing
there were other people like Winston who oppose Big Brother. O Brien tells Winston that his thoughts
and memories are delusions that never occurred. O Brien later explains that Big Brother controls all,
including reality itself. Reality is what someone feels and experiences so it s possible that Big Brother
controls reality by controlling the mind. Reality is what is perceived to be true, but what exactly is the
truth when someone controls your mind. In science, reality is a theoretical notion of understanding
that can never be proven. In the Copenhagen Interpretation from the school of quantum mechanics,
reality does not exist without an observer to observe it so in relation to 1984, by controlling the
observer (the proles) Big Brother can control what they observe. We control matter ... Show more

Film Analysis Of The Movie The Bride Of Frankenstein
Making a good movie is easy but making a great movie is hard. As I watched a short clip from the
movie The Bride of Frankenstein I watched how the acting, plot, lighting, camera work, and script all
made this film come to life. This movie was made in 1935 yet it is still so compelling to watch
because it is successful with the important components of a movie. The first thing I noticed about the
short clip was the lighting. As a photographer lighting is the most important thing about pictures and
films. I realized that the whole movie was very dark for the most part. As I watched the short clip I
saw harsh shadows on the background or on their faces which gave a mysterious feeling. As a viewer
it came off creepy, and kept thinking was something about to pop out? The lighting was great when
Pretorius says to Dr. Frankenstein You are responsible for all the murders, there is a dark shadow on
Dr. Frankenstein. As for Pretorius it seems like he has a halo of light around him. I have a feeling that
the lightening in this conversation was intentional. Dr. Frankenstein is looked down, dark, and evil
because he murdered people. While in this same conversation it seems like Pretorius is the good guy
in this situation even though they both do not seem very good. All in all, the lighting was very
intentional. If they put soft/ airy lighting in this film, I do not think the message would come across
and it would not be as interesting than it was. Acting and script go hand on hand

King Arthur Gwaine Alternate Ending
Soft voices greeted him as he entered the Hall of Records. Gwaine wasn t sure if he d even been in
this part of the castle before. He found Arthur sitting at a desk next to Geoffrey of Monmouth, pouring
over what appeared to be a genealogical record book of families and crests.
As he glanced over the page they were on, he felt his heart stop. On the top of the parchment was a
white phoenix on a black background. It had been decades since he even thought of that particular
coat of arms.
Arthur didn t bother looking up. Sir Gwaine, I need you to take Sir Percival and a contingent of

You wanted to speak with me, Sire? Gwaine ducked his head through the wooden door. The room
inside was bathed in warm light by a multitude of candles and a roaring fire in the hearth. A soft
breeze of cool air came from an open window behind the large desk. Tapestries hung from the walls,
and red curtains surrounded the four poster bed in the Royal Chamber.
Come in, Gwaine.
During his years in Camelot, Gwaine had only been in this chamber a handful of times. Typically, his
meetings with the king took place in more formal settings, or on the training field. He couldn t recall
the last time when he had been summoned to speak with Arthur alone. The roguish knight felt a bit
uneasy as he entered. He took a seat across the desk from Arthur and waited, twisting his hands
nervously.
Are you healing well from your capture? Arthur asked, referring to Gwaine s recent enslavement by
Morgana.
Gwaine had led a group of knights toward Ismere to check on reports of Morgana. Word had come
that she was amassing an army of Saxons, as well as conscripting men from nearby villages as slave
labor. After weeks of not hearing from his men, Arthur had set out with a large party to find

Allergic Response Essay
The response phase begins with antigen presenting cells, such as dendritic cells and macrophages,
found in the airway. These cells will capture, process and present allergens to helper T cells (Th cells.)
Th cells become activated and release cytokines. The allergen promotes eosinophil recruitment as
well. [4] Stimulated Th cells can differentiate into Th1 and Th2 cells from undifferentiated precursors,
known as Th0 cells. Th1 cells produce a specific set of cytokines that are involved in cellular
immunity, they are also responsible for delayed hypersensitivity reactions and macrophage activation.
Th2 cells also produce a specific set of cytokines, however they are involved in humoral immunity.
Regulatory T cells play a role in Th2 cells responses to allergens. [4] The allergen will bind to the IgE
antibodies on mast cells. The multivalent IgE s are cross linked, this activates the mast cells, causing
mast cell degranulation, releasing basophilic granules, which contain pharmacologically active agents.
These mediators are released into tissues, resulting in an allergic response. [2] The late allergic
response is a result of proinflammatory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

cardiovascular health, and since it is a form of high intensity training, it has incredible implications on

but in the off chance that one happens to snap, being able to replace it free of charge is awesome.

The Science Of A Memory
Memory is something that is essential to our daily lives. Creating and retrieving memories is
something that happens without us knowing; subconscious remembrance of events allows us to
remember our friend s name, a favorite baseball or football team, or what city we live in without
needing to ask others or consult the internet. Even if we were to ask others a question about
something, without memory we would forget the answer to the question we had asked immediately
after they had told us, which would be quite a confusing and annoying situation for both parties
involved. Without memory, we would have no concept of what is the past and what is the future,
which would lead to a very different perception of reality than what we are used to. It should be noted;
however, that there is a definite science for memory. As previously mentioned, memories can be
encoded subconsciously (without our awareness), and also consciously. This paper will focus on the
science of increasing the effectiveness of conscious memory, that is, memory that we intentionally try
to encode into our minds with the purpose of a later retrieval. The main idea from Chapter 6 Tips from
the Science of Memory for Studying and for Life is that people at the individual level need to optimize
memorization techniques that best work for themselves. According to the textbook, the most effective
way to memorize, regardless of memory model, is by thinking deeply about the material of life and

Explain How To Repair Your Own Faucet
Repairing your own faucet may seem intimidating, but once you learn the fundamentals, today s
faucets are not that hard to fix. In fact, usually the most difficult step is finding the correct replacement
parts. The necessary tools will vary a bit depending on the type of faucet you re repairing. An Allen
wrench will probably be needed to remove the handle. With a small set of small Allen wrenches, you
ll be ready for any faucet. Most repairs also require large slip joint pliers and screwdrivers.
For all faucet repairs, make sure to examine the faucet closely, before you begin, to determine the
source of the leak. Leaks originating from near the base of the spout will require a different repair than
a leak from the end.
Next, turn off the water supply to the faucet. The shutoff valves are probably located under the sink. If
the valves don t work or if you don t have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You could record each step with a digital camera or video camera so you don t forget. Set the parts
aside in the order you removed them, to make putting it back together easier on yourself. When you ve
got all the parts out, check the interior of the valve for loose bits and mineral deposits. Use a cloth or a
pad to clean the surface. Soaking mineral deposits in vinegar will loosen them right up.
Slow water flow? That can be caused by plugged holes in the faucet body. A small screwdriver or
penknife can be used to clean them out. Before you replace worn parts and put the faucet back
together, hold a rag over the faucet and open the water shutoff valve slightly to flush out debris that
may have accumulated during the cleaning.
Once the faucet is reassembled, open the faucet and slowly open the shutoff valves to turn on the
water. Keep the faucet open until water is flowing freely and the air is out of the pipes. If the water
flow is slow through the faucet, the aerator may be plugged. Unscrew the aerator and clean it

Relationship Between Cherry Stepwood And Hedda Gabler
Mackenzie Sullivan
ENG 202
12/10/2017
Balancing True Love
The male female relationships in Ibsen s play Hedda Gabler, and Chekhov s play The Cherry Orchard
show the women partners as incapable of the mutual respect and understanding necessary for a
sustained and fulfilling committed relationship. Hedda, Thea, Madame,Varya, and even young Anya
cannot enter or maintain a marriage because each of them have not yet self actualized. None of the
relationships in the plays offer any type of fulfillment. The two writers are alike in the way that their
portrayals pose these two questions: What may a woman give and receive from her partner/husband if
she herself lacks self nourishment and balance? Societal expectations and, in the case of the The
Cherry Orchard, an aristocracy losing its wealth and power precipitate each woman s crisis. For any
healthy relationship to last, both partners have to be fully committed to each other. In both plays, none
of the relationships really offer any type of fulfillment. The title of Hedda Gabler, uses Hedda s
maiden name, Gabler, even though her married name is Hedda Tesman. Based off of the initial reading
of the title, one can already tell that there is a strong intention behind it. Isben purposely wrote the title
that way to indicate that Hedda wanted to be recognized as her father s daughter, not as her husband s
wife. This already proves that she is not fully in love with her husband and there is more that is going
on beyond just the

How A Fetus Changes Into A Baby
In this chapter it talks about the development of how a fetus changes into a baby. The first part of the
chapter starts out by talking about how the zygote divides into the two cells. With another 36 hours the
zygote becomes 32 cells. This time period of conception is call germinal stage. In the first few days in
the germinal stage the cell mass takes the form of a fluid filled ball called a blastocyst. The dividing
cells cell moves through the fallopian tube, then they go throw to the uterus. This chapter also talks
about how although humans are not chickens their babies are formed in the same way. Like in a
chickens egg the yoke develops into a baby chicken, and in a human the embryo becomes a fetus.
Then the chapter starts to talk about the different things bleeding while being pregnant can mean.
Although a majority of people believe that if a woman bleeds while pregnant mans that she has had a
miscarriage, it can mean many of different things. Miscarriages can be caused by many different
things, and can cause many different types of problems. Such as a high risk of having anxiety and it
also puts relationships at a higher percentage of ending. One third of percent end in a miscarriage.
Miscarriages happed within the first three months of pregnancy. Woman who are over the age of thirty
are more likely to have a miscarriage. Miscarriages can be cause from many things such as

In Depth Analysis Of Emicho And His Crusaders
The first crusade started in 1096 B.C. when Pope Urban II called for the for a holy war. This was the

the death of thousands of Jewish people. This with previous persecution of the Jews, by Christians, led
to even more persecution of Jews. Pope Urban II called for a holy war in 1095. Urban wanted the
Christians to take over the holy city of Jerusalem. He also said the Islamic people committed crimes
against Christendom. When he called for this crusade he expected to have trained soldiers partake in

There are a lot of arguments whether or not illegal aliens should or should not be allowed into another

A Woman with Fighting Words
Our government is based on the idea of natural rights for every citizen; every citizen means all
citizens. It does say all men are created equal , this mean men and women. Susan B. Anthony was a
woman of great courage and dedication. She exemplified these characteristics through out her life. She
tears and pulls apart the Declaration of Independence, preamble of the Constitution, sex qualifications,

Anthony wants female s rights to be heard and put to good use. She then talks about the preamble of
the Constitution. She looks at the first three words which are We the people . She argued that it didn t
say white male citizen it said the people. During the time of her speech only white male citizens could
vote, leaving her to argue the integrity of our constitutional rights. She spoke of the offensive nature of
asking women how they like their liberty and freedom when they are denied their voice in the
government. Their voice was the only means of security and true protection. She is clearly stating that
the government has given women their freedom but hasn t let them use it by voting. This is the heart
of her argument, this shows that she wants the government to see the qualities in women and wishes
that they will put them to good use.
Anthony then talks about States making sex qualifications and how it is a violation of the supreme law

USpreme Court Case Summary

v. Sandoz, Inc., No. 13 854 (argued, October 2014). This argument was presented on October 15,
2014. First I will provide a summary of the prosecution history behind this case. Teva Pharmaceuticals
USA created a multiple sclerosis drug called Copaxone and subsequently obtained a patent for the
drug. Sandoz Inc. desired to create a generic version of Copaxone and submitted their request to the
Food and Drug Administration. In 2012, Teva sued Sandoz in the U.S. District Court for the Southern
District of New York on the grounds of patent infringement. The District Court then considered the
patent through claims construction by examining the patent s plain language and its prosecution
history. Then, the court examined expert testimony and the public record to the patent in order to see if
the terms were definite. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

finding was that facts are not involved in claim construction. He asserted that facts could be involved
in a claim construction case. They are involved when the trial judge discovers what a skilled person in
the art knows as necessary and vital to interpreting the patent. He also noted that the Federal Circuit
Court should have applied in determining its holding on the case. First, he noted that the Federal
Circuit did not concede to the trial court determination about the accepted meaning of the term

did not defer to what the District court found to terminate an argument about Figure 1 in the case in
regard to where the peak in the curve exists. The final fact Mr. Jay forwarded was that the Federal
Circuit did not determine how a person of ordinary skill in the art would have viewed a part of the

If John goes the large business route, he will be able to raise the franchising cost. This move would
really get Dual Pane s name out there, but there would also be a bigger risk. The quality that Dual
Pane has worked so hard to achieve could potentially be compromised by these larger businesses. It
would also be more difficult to successfully pitch this idea to a huge company and persuade them to
heavily invest in something that would seem small scale to them.
On the other hand, if he markets to small businesses, Dual Pane will more easily be able to keep its
reputation as a quality restoration business. The company likely would not get national recognition,
but it would be easier to franchise to individuals. It would also be easier to manage the relationships
between the franchisor and the franchisees. The main downside to this alternative is the fact that John
would have to charge a much lower price to these franchisees.
Decision
In order to keep its reputation of a small, quality business, Dual Pane will franchise to individuals in
the Massachusetts area. This will, of course, mean that Grayson will have to charge a lower price for
this franchising opportunity, but he will also be able to keep his original vision of being all about
quality. This alternative is much less risky than marketing to large businesses and with the uniqueness
of this machine Dual Pane is practically guaranteed to be a success.

Organizational Culture:
Organizational Culture is the key values, beliefs and attitudes shared by the members of an
organization. Organizational culture includes an organization s expectations, experiences, philosophy,
and values that hold it together, and is expressed in its self image, inner workings, interactions with
the outside world, and expectations for the future. A key source of organizational culture is usually its
founder. It can be sustained by creating and spreading organizational stories and organizational heroes.
London Drugs has had a strong culture since it was founded 70 years ago. Their culture was originally

What Is Le Corbusier s View Of Classism

It will discuss Le Corbusier s view of classism and how his ideas of modernism influenced the future

Architecture was defined as a play of volumes under light, proportions and regulating lines by the
father of modernism Le Corbusier. His architectural philosophy was defined by Stephan Bayley as

Cité de Refuge was the first chance that Le Corbusier had to deal with housing for the poor in a city.
(Roberts, 2010) (Army, 2017)
Cité de Refuge was to be a place not only to house the poor but to transform them into members of the
society. Le Corbisier saw Cité de Refuge as a machine for people to live in, work in and sleep in, he
saw it as an opportunity for them to learn how to live. The Cité consisted of dormitories, apartments

Mahatma Gandhi Philosophy
During the period of British colonies in India, Mahatma Gandhi (1869 1948) led his community to
protest against its harsh policies. Gandhi played an important role as a political figure and primarily as
a social reformer in political movements. The Father of the Nation established and employed his
philosophy including satyagraha, swaraj, and ashima in Indian nonviolent civil disobedience. In this

philosophy.
While Gandhi was well known as a political leader, he was primarily a social reformer. Through

Satire In Northanger Abbey
Satire is a literary device used by writers typically to critique society or an individual. It can be done a
variety of ways, including humor, irony, and ridicule. An example of a writer using satire to critique
society would be Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey. Using a variety of techniques, Austen criticizes
how society viewed novels and the people who write them by parodying common tropes in novels.
Most novels just want to pull the reader in, and make them forget that they are reading a novel, but
Austen does not allow this. The very first line in Northanger Abbey is No one who had ever seen
Catherine Morland in her infancy, would have supposed her born to be a heroine (1). By pointing out
that the main character is supposed to be the heroine, Austen draws attention to the fact that this is a
novel. However, while Catherine is in fact a heroine, it is also states from the beginning that she does
not match the expectations of the average heroine. So right from the beginning, the reader knows that
while this is a novel, it is not going to be a typical one. It is in fact, going to parodying and critiquing
some common aspects of novels. Austen continues on, and not so subtly points out the ways that
Catherine differs from the heroines normally found in novels.
For Catherine s ...situation in life, the character of her father and mother, her own person and
disposition were all equally against her (Austen 1). She was fairly normal and did not have any of the
commonly used characteristics of heroines working in her favor, despite being a heroine herself.
Austen writes Catherine this was to parody the way women are written in novels. There normally has
to be some catalyst that makes the heroine special, different than the average women. However,
Catherine wasn t incredibly poor, had two well tempered parents, and preferred other hobbies ...to the
more heroic enjoyments... (Austen 1) that heroines were normally fond of. By completely disregarding
the characteristics normally attributed to heroines, Austen creates a character that would not fit into
the normal novel. She essentially gives Catherine the character of someone who is almost the
antithesis of what a heroine normally is, and by doing this critiques the

brainstorming, I decided it would be a great idea to sit on Tim s shoulders with a stick in my hand and
wack at the tennis ball until it rolled out from between the rungs. I sat there, trying to maneuver a way
to get it unjammed, but to my disappointment

American Beauty Term Paper
Term Paper: American Beauty
What are the costs of living in a success driven, consumer oriented, image obsessed society? This
challenge to contemporary America s suburban culture finds a voice in Sam Mendes 1999 movie
American Beauty. The film s complex subtlety underscores its implication that subtlety itself is a
casualty in our society. American Beauty s tagline exhorts viewers to look closer, but the film
expresses ambivalence concerning what is revealed by closer inspection. On one hand, protagonist
Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) and his young neighbor Ricky Fitts (Wes Bentley) speak of the
unappreciated beauty surrounding us; however, Lester also begins to question the values of a world
that seems perfect but is actually a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mendes and cinematographer Conrad Hall substitute film of a lower resolution to add realism to shots
supposedly filmed with Ricky s video camera. Black and white footage in the closing montage
sequence differentiates Lester s memories of his life and family from the story time of the flashback
that makes up the rest of the movie. However, the most important feature of American Beauty s
camerawork is the use of the technique to reinforce the message of the movie s tagline, which tells
viewers to look closer. Though zoom out shots occasionally appear most notably in the closing
helicopter shot they are far outnumbered by zooms that bring the audience closer to the subject. This
preponderance not only contributes to the film s theme but also emphasizes zoom outs, particularly in
the final shot of the film. Ricky makes abundant use of the zoom feature on his camera, and because
his subject is often Jane, close ups on her are common. One particularly interesting example appears
in the scene of Angela spending the night with Jane in the movie s first section. The girls notice that
Ricky has spelled out Jane in the yard in burning letters. Surmising that Ricky is filming them, Jane
retreats flustered while Angela, ever the exhibitionist, dances at the window. Rather than focusing on
Angela, the crass, unsubtle beauty, Ricky zooms past her to settle on Jane s face reflected in a mirror.

Kendrick Lamar Biography
Kendrick Lamar Duckworth is an American rapper who was born on June 17, 1987 in Compton,
California ( Kendrick Lamar Biography ). Performing as Kendrick Lamar, he has won seven Grammy
awards and has two Platinum albums. Lamar s first major label album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, met
with critical acclaim and within nine months of its release was certified platinum by the RIAA. Good
kid, m.A.A.d city was a commercial success that skyrocketed the rapper s career into super stardom,
the album captivated music purists with an intricate story that unfolded throughout the opus (V.C.).
Kendrick Lamar s third album, To Pimp a Butterfly, slightly deviates from that, instead finishing with
a grittier and deeper product. In the individual songs, Lamar addresses some kind of social problem
ranging from black on black crime to the government s neglect of minorities. Each song is
characterized by its own distinctive concept and, on a larger scale, all the songs are interconnected by
a wider narrative that revolves around Kendrick becoming a celebrity in a system owned by Uncle
Sam and ruled by the evils of Lucy, a personification of Lucifer (V.C.). Critics and fans alike have
praised To Pimp a Butterfly for it s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The verse begins with Lucifer, Lucy, trying to tempt him: What you want, a house or a car ...anything,
see my name is Lucy, ... you can live at the mall (Lamar, Alright 45 48). He then talks about his greed
and being able to see the evil, but trying not to think about it: I deposit every other zero. He goes on
by trying to keep Lucy with him, in my pocket ain t a profit, big enough to feed you / Everyday ... get
another dollar just to keep you / In the presence of your chico (Lamar, Alright 50 54). He finishes his
verse by talking about reaching heaven by righting his wrongs by writing until he is right with

A brief Introduction on the Laptop Industry of India
Computers
One industry which continues to hold its head high even in an environment of industrial slowdown is
information technology (IT) with annual growth rates of software value hovering between 20% and
30%. Growth rates for the industry earlier were as high as 40% to 60%. The soft ware industry is
supported, on the one hand, by the hardware industry computers, peripherals and components, and on
the other, by IT related services. Software exports ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

dominate the market with 55% share in the overall household segment. The middle level segment
registered a 16% growth in sales and accounted for 29% in the segment. Households in the relatively
low income bracket posted a decline in its share. Sales in this segment declined by14%. World
computer chip leader, Intel, unveiled a new processor designed to turn a personal computer into a
living room multimedia centre. Intel also announced new ventures with other electronics producers,
including Microsoft and content vendors to give a richer Internet content experience. Intel was
expected to launch small, affordable laptops for students, called Eduwise in the Indian market by

Ibm Is Generating A High Profit Essay
average of 1% IBM is generating a high profit margin to earn a greater profit.
Return on Assets:
Return on Assets (ROA) measures how profitably a company uses their assets by net income divided
by the average total assets. Assets are either tangible or intangible items the company owns. For
example, things like buildings, equipment, cash, office supplies, or accounts receivable (receiving
cash from customers on services you have performed). To find the average total assets, you use the
same idea as the return on equity method, but instead you add up all of the assets and average them,
instead of using just one account. IBM measured ROA of 13% in 2013 and 10% in 2014. In order to
know how well the company did, it s best to compare these percentages to the industry average of
1.6% to get a better idea of where they stand. In this case, IBM produces more profit for every $1,
than the industry average. Even though there may have been a slight decline, IBM is still currently
producing well above.
Profitability Conclusion: IBM was well above the industry average for all of the profitability ratios
with given industry averages. Although the company was successful in this category it doesn t mean
the company is successful as a whole. There are other groups to consider before making a final
judgement on how well IBM s performance is. Stockholder/Investor Relations: Stockholder s purchase
stock in a company in hopes of earning revenue once they decide to sell the stock. There

  • 2. The Magdalen With The Smoking Flame Summary The Magdalen with the Smoking Flame is a work of art done by Georges De La Tour. It was completed in the year 1640 using oil paint on canvas in France, and it is now located at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This painting is of a woman, possibly pregnant, sitting leaning on a table her head rested on one hand. She also has a skull on her lap and the other hand placed on it. In the back ground there is a small stack of books and candlelight. More than anything on this painting, it is focused on the woman state of mind and heart rather than the skull or anything else. The simple arrangement of how the artist used vertical and horizontal shapes draws the viewer really close into the Magdalen s thoughts. The skull and the books purpose is to set the mood in what the woman might be feeling. The focal point of the entire painting seems to be the candle because not only is it bright, but the woman is gazing profoundly into it. Everything in the painting is smoothed surface. The painter did not use texture in the paint but only in very few areas like in the oil of the candle. The tones in this painting are warm. There are a lot of browns and ambers. A few cool colors were used to define the shadows of the shapes with blue. The attention getter is the candle light. It s almost hard to ignore because it is so bright. The second brightest thing in the painting is the woman s shirt, but even that is not as bright because of all the shadows and creases in it. Another reason why ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Accounting And Disclosure Requirements Of Leases We know businesses can acquire assets differently, they can buy it, or if they do not have enough fund to purchase the asset, they can lease it. Lease arrangements give the lessee access to the assets for long enough time and in return they need to make periodic payments to the lessor. The main advantage of leasing is to acquire the necessary equipment or assets, use that assets to generate revenue but without tying up a big amount of cash upfront. International Accounting Standard Board (IASB) introduced new guidelines for accounting and disclosure requirements of leases. IFRS 16 Leases will replace IAS 17 Leases, and related Interpretations, and will be effective from 1 January 2019. We can distinguish leases either financial or operational. In existing lease accounting practices, we treat financial leases similar to purchase with cash or on account. On the other hand operational leases do not recognised as an asset in the books of the business but we do deduct lease payments as an expense and it showed up in the income statement. Over the time, the use of operating income increased so much that the academician, regulators and practitioners raised concerns to potential opportunistic use of it by businesses (Altamuro, Johnston, Pandit and Zhang, 2014). In general companies who use operating lease ends up with improved return on assets and debt to equity ratio and therefore better solidity comparing to the companies who do not use operating leases, instead they use ... • 4. Comparing Bronte s Macbeth And Wuthering Heights Jack Nettles Ms.Weaver English 4 5 17 Macbeth and Wuthering Heights While reading Macbeth and Wuthering Heights I discovered these pieces of literature are very similar. Both stories have complicated relationships with the main characters. The destructive love within the relationships in Shakespeare s Macbeth and Bronte s Wuthering Heights, are presented through sexism, jealousy, and betrayal. These authors show those characteristics as in today s time. It is very ironic how both of these stories portray the same thing. The first thing they show is how and what happens in a relationship when women get control. In Macbeth Lady Macbeth controls Macbeth by rhetorical manipulation as stated by Linda Hutcheon. In Macbeth, Macbeth shows his manhood in the first scene by killing his enemy gruesomely. It was described by the captain as Til he unseamed him from the nave to th chops and fix d his head upon our battlements (1.1 22 24). Macbeth also showed his manliness when he fought the English army on his own in act 5 scene 3. In Wuthering Heights Heathcliff shows his masculinity by leaving and coming back three years after Edgar and Catherine get married. When Heathcliff came back he had money and higher education. The term terrorism is notoriously hard to explain as there is no international consensus on the definition legally or academically thus is often used to mean many different things by pundits, politicians and the media. A highly complex phenomenon, terrorism stands at the forefront of international agendas, and the term is associated with a wide variety of groups all over the world. So the question is what constitutes terrorism? The dictionary definition is violence or threat of violence against non combatants or civilians, usually motivated by religious or political ideologies. This paper aims to do a critical discourse analysis of a few of the speeches by US Leaders George Bush and Barrack Obama in the aftermath of the attacks on the world trade centre in 2001. It draws on Schiffrin et al (2003), Foucault s and Van Dijk s concepts of critical discourse analysis and aims to reveal how Bush and Obama carefully selected emotionally charged language, expressions and gestures to create fear and panic in the world and how they projected terrorism negatively all the while advocating and justifying similar strategies and calling it anti terrorism. Terrorism is a highly complex phenomenon with over one hundred definitions all over the world, it stands at the forefront of many international agendas. • 6. Gender Stereotypes In The Bloody Chamber In The Bloody Chamber, The Tiger s Bride and The Company of Wolves, Carter draws attention to her agenda of undercutting the stereotypical portrayal of women as victims and men as oppressors. She does this through the rewriting of patriarchal narratives, where women are often portrayed as the powerless damsel in distress and the weaker sex by introducing feminist elements such as independent and strong willed women as well as undercutting male power and authority. Through her stories, Carter then gives a voice to express the experiences of women, making such experiences known to society where they have been previously under represented. In The Bloody Chamber, Carter undercuts gender stereotypes that are often associated with the portrayal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The opening line of The Tiger s Bride, My father lost me to The Beast at cards connotes the idea of the protagonist as a commodity that can be lost and passed from hand to hand . She is thus reduced to a mute object that can be bartered with by her father, reflecting the idea of women as mere commodities who are being victimized under a patriarchal system. However Carter portrays the protagonist as refusing to let herself by victimized by the patriarchy, as seen in [she] let out a raucous guffaw . Her behavior is then a reflection of her refusal to be objectified and judged by patriarchy and in doing so, undercuts male power and authority. In The Bloody Chamber, through the character Jean Yves, Carter quite literally subverts the male gaze by making Jean Yves blind and in doing so, thus puts men and women on an equal footing where neither one gender is seen as more powerful over the other. It is also notable that in all three tales, the protagonists are not explicitly named and this can be seen as a deliberate attempt on Carter s part as a way of refusing to objectify her protagonists by imposing a fixed identity on ... We as a society go about our daily activities not thinking about the criminal actions of others. We are not faced with the concerns of crimes unless we are the victims. We depend on communication outlets to stay updated with local, state and international events. The actual number of children missing is alarming and yet unknown. Influences on the public perception The writer of this chapter pinpointed the views of the world in a great way. There are many influences on the public perception of missing children. During the reading, it was noted that media coverage has a significant impact on society s point of view. News media focus on sensational cases to determine the public s perception of child abductions. (Kappeler Potter, p.54) This influence can be positive and negative creating fears and myths. The news stories and developing information regarding missing children determines the interest level of viewers. It has been determined that society craves drama and action in the news and entertainment. The horror stories make great media attention. Therefore, the idea of pictures of missing children allows viewers to relate on a visual level. (Kappeler Potter, p.54) It was enlightening to see that facts presented in the media can be distorting. The highland population between the years of 1921 1930 witnessed a decrease of 13.8% in the highland counties alone. This can be explained through an increase in emigration, loss of life from World War One and a general decline in agriculture. The 1920 s saw an overall increase in emigration from Scotland, many of these came from rural areas. An explanation into rural emigration could be in response to the land raids that were occurring during this time. They are constantly being monitored using Telescreens, so everything done or said is recorded by Big Brother and used against them. O Brien, an inner party member, tricks Winston Smith into believing there were other people like Winston who oppose Big Brother. O Brien tells Winston that his thoughts and memories are delusions that never occurred. O Brien later explains that Big Brother controls all, including reality itself. Reality is what someone feels and experiences so it s possible that Big Brother controls reality by controlling the mind. Reality is what is perceived to be true, but what exactly is the truth when someone controls your mind. In science, reality is a theoretical notion of understanding that can never be proven. • 13. Film Analysis Of The Movie The Bride Of Frankenstein Making a good movie is easy but making a great movie is hard. As I watched a short clip from the movie The Bride of Frankenstein I watched how the acting, plot, lighting, camera work, and script all made this film come to life. This movie was made in 1935 yet it is still so compelling to watch because it is successful with the important components of a movie. The first thing I noticed about the short clip was the lighting. As a photographer lighting is the most important thing about pictures and films. I realized that the whole movie was very dark for the most part. As I watched the short clip I saw harsh shadows on the background or on their faces which gave a mysterious feeling. As a viewer it came off creepy, and kept thinking was something about to pop out? The lighting was great when Pretorius says to Dr. Frankenstein You are responsible for all the murders, there is a dark shadow on Dr. Frankenstein. As for Pretorius it seems like he has a halo of light around him. I have a feeling that the lightening in this conversation was intentional. Dr. Frankenstein is looked down, dark, and evil because he murdered people. While in this same conversation it seems like Pretorius is the good guy in this situation even though they both do not seem very good. All in all, the lighting was very intentional. If they put soft/ airy lighting in this film, I do not think the message would come across and it would not be as interesting than it was. Acting and script go hand on hand ... • 16. Allergic Response Essay The response phase begins with antigen presenting cells, such as dendritic cells and macrophages, found in the airway. These cells will capture, process and present allergens to helper T cells (Th cells.) Th cells become activated and release cytokines. The allergen promotes eosinophil recruitment as well. [4] Stimulated Th cells can differentiate into Th1 and Th2 cells from undifferentiated precursors, known as Th0 cells. Th1 cells produce a specific set of cytokines that are involved in cellular immunity, they are also responsible for delayed hypersensitivity reactions and macrophage activation. Th2 cells also produce a specific set of cytokines, however they are involved in humoral immunity. Regulatory T cells play a role in Th2 cells responses to allergens. [4] The allergen will bind to the IgE antibodies on mast cells. The multivalent IgE s are cross linked, this activates the mast cells, causing mast cell degranulation, releasing basophilic granules, which contain pharmacologically active agents. • 19. The Science Of A Memory Memory is something that is essential to our daily lives. Creating and retrieving memories is something that happens without us knowing; subconscious remembrance of events allows us to remember our friend s name, a favorite baseball or football team, or what city we live in without needing to ask others or consult the internet. Even if we were to ask others a question about something, without memory we would forget the answer to the question we had asked immediately after they had told us, which would be quite a confusing and annoying situation for both parties involved. Without memory, we would have no concept of what is the past and what is the future, which would lead to a very different perception of reality than what we are used to. It should be noted; however, that there is a definite science for memory. As previously mentioned, memories can be encoded subconsciously (without our awareness), and also consciously. This paper will focus on the science of increasing the effectiveness of conscious memory, that is, memory that we intentionally try to encode into our minds with the purpose of a later retrieval. The main idea from Chapter 6 Tips from the Science of Memory for Studying and for Life is that people at the individual level need to optimize memorization techniques that best work for themselves. • 22. Relationship Between Cherry Stepwood And Hedda Gabler Mackenzie Sullivan ENG 202 12/10/2017 Balancing True Love The male female relationships in Ibsen s play Hedda Gabler, and Chekhov s play The Cherry Orchard show the women partners as incapable of the mutual respect and understanding necessary for a sustained and fulfilling committed relationship. Hedda, Thea, Madame,Varya, and even young Anya cannot enter or maintain a marriage because each of them have not yet self actualized. None of the relationships in the plays offer any type of fulfillment. The two writers are alike in the way that their portrayals pose these two questions: What may a woman give and receive from her partner/husband if she herself lacks self nourishment and balance? Societal expectations and, in the case of the The Cherry Orchard, an aristocracy losing its wealth and power precipitate each woman s crisis. For any healthy relationship to last, both partners have to be fully committed to each other. In both plays, none of the relationships really offer any type of fulfillment. The title of Hedda Gabler, uses Hedda s maiden name, Gabler, even though her married name is Hedda Tesman. Based off of the initial reading of the title, one can already tell that there is a strong intention behind it. Isben purposely wrote the title that way to indicate that Hedda wanted to be recognized as her father s daughter, not as her husband s wife. This already proves that she is not fully in love with her husband and there is more that is going on beyond just the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An example of a writer using satire to critique society would be Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey. Using a variety of techniques, Austen criticizes how society viewed novels and the people who write them by parodying common tropes in novels. Most novels just want to pull the reader in, and make them forget that they are reading a novel, but Austen does not allow this. The very first line in Northanger Abbey is No one who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy, would have supposed her born to be a heroine (1). However, while Catherine is in fact a heroine, it is also states from the beginning that she does not match the expectations of the average heroine. So right from the beginning, the reader knows that while this is a novel, it is not going to be a typical one. It is in fact, going to parodying and critiquing some common aspects of novels. Austen continues on, and not so subtly points out the ways that Catherine differs from the heroines normally found in novels. • 43. American Beauty Term Paper Term Paper: American Beauty What are the costs of living in a success driven, consumer oriented, image obsessed society? This challenge to contemporary America s suburban culture finds a voice in Sam Mendes 1999 movie American Beauty. The film s complex subtlety underscores its implication that subtlety itself is a casualty in our society. American Beauty s tagline exhorts viewers to look closer, but the film expresses ambivalence concerning what is revealed by closer inspection. On one hand, protagonist Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) and his young neighbor Ricky Fitts (Wes Bentley) speak of the unappreciated beauty surrounding us; however, Lester also begins to question the values of a world that seems perfect but is actually a ... Black and white footage in the closing montage sequence differentiates Lester s memories of his life and family from the story time of the flashback that makes up the rest of the movie. However, the most important feature of American Beauty s camerawork is the use of the technique to reinforce the message of the movie s tagline, which tells viewers to look closer. Though zoom out shots occasionally appear most notably in the closing helicopter shot they are far outnumbered by zooms that bring the audience closer to the subject. This preponderance not only contributes to the film s theme but also emphasizes zoom outs, particularly in the final shot of the film. Ricky makes abundant use of the zoom feature on his camera, and because his subject is often Jane, close ups on her are common. One particularly interesting example appears in the scene of Angela spending the night with Jane in the movie s first section. The girls notice that Ricky has spelled out Jane in the yard in burning letters. Surmising that Ricky is filming them, Jane retreats flustered while Angela, ever the exhibitionist, dances at the window. Rather than focusing on Angela, the crass, unsubtle beauty, Ricky zooms past her to settle on Jane s face reflected in a mirror. From her faint smile an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Ibm Is Generating A High Profit Essay average of 1% IBM is generating a high profit margin to earn a greater profit. Return on Assets: Return on Assets (ROA) measures how profitably a company uses their assets by net income divided by the average total assets. Assets are either tangible or intangible items the company owns. For example, things like buildings, equipment, cash, office supplies, or accounts receivable (receiving cash from customers on services you have performed). To find the average total assets, you use the same idea as the return on equity method, but instead you add up all of the assets and average them, instead of using just one account. IBM measured ROA of 13% in 2013 and 10% in 2014. In order to know how well the company did, it s best to compare these percentages to the industry average of 1.6% to get a better idea of where they stand. In this case, IBM produces more profit for every $1, than the industry average. Even though there may have been a slight decline, IBM is still currently producing well above.
