Sleeping with the Enemy
In the movie Sleeping With the Enemy, Laura Burns, is living a life that many would describe as
perfect. Laura lives in a beautiful mansion on the coast with her handsome, wealthy husband Martin.
This wealth allows Laura the opportunity to stay at home rather than working outside of the home.
However, behind closed doors this perfect life is very different from what the outside world sees.
Laura is constantly being beaten, ridiculed, and criticized by her husband. Martin is obsessed about
keeping the house in perfect order. He is easily set off by simple things such as a towel being out of
line, or a can out of place in the cupboard. Upon him discovering that things are "out of order," he
resorts to severely beating Laura. The only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regardless of the reasons behind why Laura does things the way that she does, I believe that this
movie accurately portrays this issue that is faced by survivors of spousal abuse. However, one area
that I don't believe the movie touched on enough was the psychological problems associated with
survivors of spousal abuse. Walllace discusses that often woman suffer from such things as
posttraumatic stress syndrome, depression and other symptoms that inhibit their ability to function
within society. In addition the Department of Justice Canada states that "abuse may affect virtually
every aspect of an abused person's life. It can harm their physical and mental health, their ability to
work, and their relationship with their children and loved ones"In this movie Laura does not appear
to be suffering from such things, in fact she seems to be coping very well, with the exception of the
not trusting others, and not wanting to enter into another relationship. These mental issues are an
important part of spousal abuse that I feel should have been portrayed more in this movie, in order
for the audience to fully understand the wide variety of possible consequences of abuse. When
looking at how this movie portrays Martin, I believe that it covers some very common areas that can
lead to spousal abuse. First

The Trench Monologue
Click. The tape recorder started up.
"It was dirty that's for sure. The rats ate at your toes and the smell was horrible."
Ed paused and wiped a tear from his eye, staring right across the table at his grandson, who
preceded to ask the age–old question.
"What really happened that day Grandad?"
The grey sky hung close to 16–year–old Ed and the other soldiers as they stood, lined up in the
trench. Rain poured heavily over their helmets, draining into the mud. The French sun hid hazily in
the smog–covered sky. THUD THUD THUD, cannons pounded shells through the air, towards the
Germans.
"Get ready men!" shouted the commander.
Next to Ed, a man named John loaded his rifle.
"You ready Ed?" he whispered.
Ed nodded.

It seemed like ages before he was free. He ran back towards the British line, expecting at any
moment to feel a bullet rip through him. Then, out of the blue, a single shot rumbled across the
dormant battlefield. Ed spun around just in time to see the German commander's pistol smoking.
The machine gunner who had spared his life was slumped over, motionless.
Moonlight flooded into the trench as the patrol officers found Ed curled up in a ball, weeping.
"What is your name son?"
"Ed Aarons, sir," he said, looking up.
"I can't believe you're still alive! Your family is worried sick about you, back in England. You will
be sent back immediately! This is an outrage! I'm very sorry, very sorry indeed."
"When I got back home, I expected to be bullied by my family, like before. But it was quite the
opposite. They were proud of me for surviving the war. I gave John's letter to his mother; it was a
horrible experience to say the least. The whole thing is just senseless, killing each other. I hope no
one else ever has to experience the things I saw. To this day, I feel like my soul is still there on that

Public Enemies Movie Analysis
Director Michael Mann releases his movie Public Enemy to the public on July 1, 2009. This
nonfiction biographical movie of the character John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) fascinates the viewers
with his charming self, witty audacity, and bold bravery of his gangster–style bank robberies during
the Depression era of America's greatest crime wave. Characters such as Baby Face Nelson (Stephen
Graham), Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum), Homer Van Meter (Stephen Dorff), and Evelyn
'Billie' Frechette (Marion Cotillard) displayed their elusiveness of the federal agents with their
burglaries through Ohio and Indiana as the American gangsters. Labeled by J. Edgar Hoover (Billy
Crudup) as America's first Public Enemy Number One, Dillinger's brashness erupted even more.
The enlistment of FBI's top agent, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), gave the instructional task of
bringing in this charismatic and troubling evildoer Dillinger dead or alive.
Nevertheless, this movie introduced us to this charming character Dillinger. The comparison and
contrast of the true realities verses the movie actually handles the injustices differently than what the
screen displays. Drama, bad boy image, lovers, and reckless abandonment of the law lures us to an
unrealistic reality to the

A Friendly Enemy
"Death is my wish for myself, my enemies, my children" (Euripedes translated by
Robinson Jeffers, Medea 11). Medea is hungry for death. She wants to taste it on her lips and wishes
others to do the same. The value which Medea gives death is to use it as a weapon against her
enemies. On the other hand, the women and the nurse fear death. Death,to the women and to the
nurse is something that should not be wished for. "O shining sky, divine earth,
Harken not to the song that this woman sings" (13). One of the Greek women says this, for
Medea is screaming out that she would like to die. The women and the nurse hear Medea wishing
for death as if it were a treasure or something valuable. The nurse and women ... Show more content

To a Greek woman death is personified as a hunter or killer. She uses an animal, the hawk,to
compare to death. A hawk is a swift predator that attacks unnoticed, but to Medea death is a trophy.
For Medea death has a value of importance. A friendship has been established. Death is Medea's
friend. She uses it as a weapon to get what she views as justice. "Then if you have a dog eyed
enemy and needed absolute vengeance . . . Unchild him, ha? And then unlife him"(23). Medea
believed with great depth to get vengeance upon Jason. She wanted to go through with her
vengeance and hurt Jason as Jason hurt her. Jason left Medea for another woman thus leaving her
miserable and craving for revenge. Thus, she went on taking the life of his bride–to–be and the life
of their children. She also wanted to wash herself from the impurities of Jason's touch. "Ah,
rotten, rotten, rotten: death is the only water to wash this dirt" (12). This is a metaphor for she
compares death to a water, which is a symbol of pureness, to cleanse herself. The nurse and women
have almost pleaded to Medea not to even think about death, but because of her resentment and hate
towards Jason she is deaf to the women's advice. The importance given to death by Medea is rejected
by the women. Death would only make things worse in the women's eyes. To Medea everything will

Improtance of Accountability Essay
THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY IN THE ARMY AND THE POSITIVE OR
NEGATIVE IMPACT IT CAN HAVE. By: SGT Looper, Harley Whether you are dealing with
property or personnel, proper accountability is of the greatest importance in the Army. Having
proper accountability can make or break your mission. As an NCO one of my main responsibilities
is the accomplishment of my mission. Knowing where my soldiers and my equipment are will help
me to succeed in accomplishing that mission. There are many things that can pop up on a day to day
basis that can require my immediate knowledge of where my soldiers are. For example, if we have
an IDF (indirect fire) attack and one of my soldiers got injured my knowledge of where they are

Then he gets back in the truck to continue his convoy. While riding down the road the weapon falls
off and no one has a clue. Later that day the weapon is picked up by MR. Taliban. Now MR. Taliban
has a very effective and battle proven weapon. He could use that weapon to potentially hurt another
soldier, and it would all be due to PVT Snuffy's lack of accountability. Luckily for PVT Snuffy, he
has SGT Hero accounting for his sensitive items. SGT Hero notices that Snuffy does not have his
weapon, and inquires about its absence. SGT Hero then makes Snuffy retrieve his weapon before
they continue the convoy, and later provides PVT Snuffy with the appropriate corrective training to
make sure it does not happen again. By maintaining proper accountability of his and his soldiers
sensitive items, SGT Hero met his responsibilities and helped to accomplish the Organizations
mission. Whether you are dealing with personnel or equipment, accountability is of supreme
importance. It ultimately always leads back to the effectiveness to complete the mission. If the
Organizations mission is impeded in any way, it can inadvertently affect the moral, welfare, and
even the faith a soldier has in their leadership. As an NCO I will not fail my soldiers, I will
accomplish my mission, I will properly account for all personnel and equipment, and I will provide
all the tools necessary for my Organizations mission to be a paramount

The Red Badge Of Courage Essay
Henry Fleming's character changed several times throughout The Red Badge of Courage. These
changes showed how Henry became a man and how he gained the confidence and courage required
to be a soldier. In Chapter 1, Henry is completely engaged in his own thoughts. He daydreams about
his farm, his home, and the conversation he had with his mother. This shows that, at the beginning
of the novel, Henry is excited and has unrealistic ideas of glory. He is a dreamer. He doesn't think of
death, especially not the possibility of his own death. In Chapter 2, Henry starts to connect with the
other soldiers in his regiment. He listens to the soldiers talking the enemy and the coming battle. As
he listens to these stories, Henry doesn't know if they are all true and because he doesn't know if
they are true and whether or not to believe them, he starts to become afraid. He keeps his feelings to
himself, separating himself from the others. In Chapters 3 and 4, Henry's fears and doubts are
increased by rumors from soldiers. At this point in the novel, he has seen battles but has not been
part of one yet. Henry's fear of not knowing what will happen grows because he has not seen the
enemy. His fear of the unknown is greater than the idea of having to face the problem head–on.
The first major character change that Henry made was in chapter 5. It is the first day of the first
battle for Henry and the other soldiers. As he forgets his doubt and fears about how he performs, he
stands tall and

Soldiers Alone Chapter Summaries
Chapter 1: The beginning of the story starts when a Private from the Union named Henry, overhears
a conversation between two soldiers, one of them named Jim. Henry overhears Jim's conversation
with another soldier that they will be going into the war the next day. Reluctantly, the people that
Jim was talking to gathered up and started planning out their own action in war. However, another
soldier accuses Jim of lying, because he explains that they did not even move in the last two weeks.
Henry on the other hand, believes what Jim says and is surprised that he is going to war the next
day, because he had explained to the readers that he dreamed of going to battle for a long time, and
now it is true. He then has a flashback of when he told his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Henry felt unhappy that the tale was false and now was more concerned about himself and it leads
him to be depressed because he had done nothing for the last few months when waiting to go to war.
He comes to the point that he feels like he cannot do anything at all, and can't be the hero he wants
to be. He also comes to the point that he finds out that math and science cannot help him in
everything, such as determining if he is a coward or not. Having noticed that he cannot determine on
math and science to help him find out if he is a coward or not, he decides to go find an opportunity
to help him prove if he is a coward or not. Trying to find an opportunity, he tried to measure himself
to the other soldiers of his camp and tried to understand what the other soldiers was thinking about.
He explains that he also afraid to show the other soldiers his concern about the war. He then thinks
about two theories about his own camp as a whole. His first theory is that he believes that all the
soldiers in his camps are heroes. However, at some times, he ignored the positive theories he had
about them and saw them instead as a wandered someone who is afraid to do something. His

Democracy cradles it's freedom and the belief of free speech, but when a nation's beliefs become the
causation of the deaths of millions that nation should delineate from what free speech is and what it
is not. Among Nir Zigdon, various others have spiked a surprising increase in internet based
hacktivism. These new hacktivists have brought with them a new form of law enforcement
punishment on the basis of hacktivist crime. The impressive amounts of protests and internet sit ins
went hand in hand with law enforcement that was equally as impressive. FBI and police have
detained hundreds of activists and levied astronomical fines sometimes reaching nearly $500,000
over the past year (Coleman, 401–402). By increasing penalties, law enforcement ensure that
hacktivism would cease. For instance, hackers of the Islamic State known as the Cyber Caliphate
seized control of the U.S Central Command's Twitter account and hijacked a French T.V network in
early April. These hackers were to be found with lifelong sentences in detainment facilities if ever
caught. With the wake of hacktivism, law enforcement have placed astronomical punishments to
derail hacking–based crimes. It is foolish to concur with the many who dispute for the hacktivists to
be unchained and freed of their fines however supporting the curtailment of the fines being placed
would be wise. To dwindle the numbers of hacktivist related crimes, law enforcement have become

Essay On The Persuader
Imagine being stuck in a house, that felt more like a prison. Working for a dangerous man, where
making one wrong move will get you killed. This quarter, I have been reading The Persuader by Lee
Child. The main character, Jack Reacher, is an ex–military cop, now a wandering lone wolf
searching for justice. Two DEA agents approach him with a situation: they had an agent on a case
who is now missing, but they can't open a case with the FBI because of legal issues. They know that
Reacher is adroit in combat and undercover operations, and he accepts their request. Jack Reacher
not only wants to help them but wants to find out why an old enemy that should be dead, may be
involved with the case. While reading Lee Child's The Persuader, I have been ... Show more content

Evaluating this style made me realize that his unique writing style made Reacher seem even more
like a real person. Right off the bat, I observed short, quick sentences showing Jack's thoughts. Since
he used to be in the military, he absorbs every little detail around him, predicting all of the possible
outcomes. An example can be shown in this quote: "Duke went back to his car. It bounced off the
shoulder and straightened up. I followed him through the two miles. We killed our lights a hundred
yards short of the driveway and made the turn. Took it slow. There was some moonlight." His fast
and almost incomplete thoughts make him seem ready to react at any moment. While making
Reacher's character consistent, Lee Child also demonstrates thorough knowledge about military
technology topics. At one point in the book, Reacher uses an "old school" code to communicate a
secret message to someone. Also, with each weapon that comes up in the book, Jack Reacher seems
to have a deep understanding of all of them. This adds to making him seem even more like a real
character because of his military background, so he would obviously have to know a lot about guns

Enemy Of The People
The Goodman Theatre's production of An Enemy of the People was an entertaining adaptation of
Ibsen's controversial play. Dr. Thomas Stockmann thinks he is a hero for discovering bacteria in the
community's baths, but his brother, Mayor Stockmann, sees the situation in a different light.
Releasing Dr. Stockmann's discovery to the public would ruin the community's main source of
revenue, and fixing the infrastructure mistake would cost an immense amount of time and money.
The performance follows Dr. Stockmann's cycle of personal discoveries and outbursts of frustration,
while certain members of Stockmann's community cannot seem to make up their mind on who they

The Emergence of a Young Girl into Womanhood
Across several different cultures, there are different ways in which people of a community recognize
the emergence of a young girl into womanhood. In the United States the most common is the
famous Sweet Sixteen which as in the name states: relates to being sixteen years old, getting a car,
and having some sort of celebration to commemorate the birthday. Among others include the
Quinceanera which is usually equated with Mexico and Bat Mitzvahs which is a Jewish girl's rite of
passage. Another rite of passage, called Kinaalda, is a puberty ceremony that holds the same
importance and significance among the Navajo tribe as their creation story. Unlike American
society, during the people's lifetime there is not a time between child and adult. In the Navajo
culture it seems that it is more plausible to say that the time between being a child and adult or as
stated by Leighton and Kluckhohn (1947), "physical maturity and social maturity are more nearly
coincidental." Meaning unlike the American culture where the gap between childhood and
adulthood is filled with an adolescence, and in the Navajo tribe this gap is not prolonged and instead
this transition is commemorated by a four–night ceremony. This process begins at the Navajo girl's
first menstruation and is a way to announce to the whole community that she has become a woman.
In earlier marriage customs, a year or so after the ceremony the girl would be considered ready for
marriage; as a result, some felt that "a girl's

Summary Of ' Coyote And The Enemy Aliens '
Japanese Canadians– "Aliens?"
"Coyote and the Enemy Aliens" is a satirical commentary that effectively expounds on the intense
objectification and dehumanization of Japanese Canadians during the colonial Canadian era. By
depicting the grotesque living conditions, the Japanese were subjected to, King is able to critique the
racist perspectives of the Canadian society. King condemns the actions of colonial white–men,
depicting them as creatures engulfed in moral blindness that strive to fabricate an ideal white world.
Moreover, King vividly portrays the idea of social dynamics, expounding on the helplessness of
Citizens against dominant political powers. King also introduces an idea of conformity, showcasing
how citizens gradually adapt to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The climax of the prose illustrates the disturbing elements of socio–political history in Canada. The
political entities stand in the near vicinity of the vehicle, "singing "O Canada." and waving flags".
Through the depiction of this disturbing image, King criticizes racist political leaders in Canada that
justified their crimes cemented on ideals of nationalism– reflecting on the moral conscience of
colonial Canada. The insensitivity of white–men is expounded in their embarkment of engineering
the atomic bomb. In the near conclusion of the story, Coyote travels to Los Alamos to "make the
world safe for freedom". The white– men euphemistically portray the Manhattan project (in Los
Alamos) as a catalyst of peace and prosperity. However, this notion is ironic as this project
engineered a mass destruction weapon leading innocent people being evaporated in a second. King
inputs this powerful idea to expose the Hippocratic nature of white–men in that era, who patronized
themselves as saints, but in reality, were responsible for the construction of the most dangerous
military weapon.
The intensely grotesque perspectives and actions committed by coyote are a striking testament to
how the general population was able to be manipulated based on ludicrous perceptions of Japanese
propagated in Canada. King employs the dim–witted character of Coyote to satirize racist Canadian
politicians and comment on their prejudiced notions

Analysis Of The Poem ' Exposure By Wilfred Owen
The poetry written in World War I was mostly dark and told of the terrible conditions of the war. The
poetry shows how the soldiers suffered and struggled through unimaginable conditions. The
conditions of the weather and battle were often brutal and uninhabitable; yet the soldiers endured
these conditions. Nature was often a slow and painful killer. War is a constant in an ever changing
world. It is easy to see that fighting is an almost futile attempt to conquer and prevail. The poetry
from the war can express the pain of war in a beautiful manner. Through writing the authors can
share the pain of what they experienced at war. The difficulty of war is viewed differently through
the eyes of these two narrators, and while one views nature as the true enemy, the other sees the loss
of people back home as the hardship.
The point of view a person has is often shaped by their life experiences. The reader can see how war
can change a soldier's ideals as they experience it. In the poem Exposure, Wilfred Owen writes
about the mental toll war takes on the human mind. He writes about how the soldier is "worried by
silence, sentries whisper, curious, nervous but nothing happens". This shows the soldier's paranoia
during the night. The soldier's cannot rest even though it is quiet, because they are afraid of what
they cannot hear. Their paranoia is taking over their minds and making them nervous about what is
to come. Owen tells us how the cold and slightly changing conditions wear and

The Theme Of Money In My Mortal Enemy By Willa Cather
There are many themes and symbols shown throughout "My Mortal Enemy" by Willa Cather, from
love to marriages, and choices. The motif I want to analyze is the motif of money. Money is used
throughout the whole book, it used to help persuade decisions, it characterizes their lavish lifestyle,
and it is what caused Oswald to become Myra's mortal enemy.
Myra, being an orphan child was raised by her great–uncle, John Driscoll, who grew up a poor boy
and made his fortune employing contract labor in the Mississippi swamps (10). The novel describes
their lavish lifestyle in which they lived in a grand house on a ten–acre park and was the finest
property in Parthia. Mr. Driscoll had fast horses that made national record, and Myra would throw
balls and garden–parties, where she would have the band play their music (10). Myra's aunt said that
Myra had "everything: dresses and jewels, a fine riding horse, a Steinway piano", and how her uncle
took her to Ireland and had her painted by one of the famous painters there (10–11).
At a youthful age, Myra did not care about money, though she cared about love. She fell in love with
a gentleman named Oswald Henshawe, but Mr. Driscoll had an old grudge of some sort with
Oswald father, and Driscoll did not like the idea Myra and Oswald being together. Oswald had left
Parthia and went to college at Harvard; he then moved to New York and after two years he was in
the position to get married (12). Then he wrote to John Driscoll for Myra's hand in

(1984) One thing that stands out about Enemy of the State is its unique use of camera angles to set
mood and tone. A good example of this is in the opening sequence. Vantages of Washington D.C.
exteriors are spliced with shots of high–tech monitors and other devices tracking vehicles from fast–
orbiting satellites. The camera changes angle quickly and unpredictably here, blending with this
dizzying montage of images to set the frantic, overwhelmed tone of the whole film. Another
example is the unique angles used during scenes depicting Dean having an argument with his wife
and Dean being chased through a tunnel. The crooked angles used to present these scenes clearly
convey the fact that Dean's life is being turned upside down. Some good use of shadow during
indoor scenes helps contribute to the overall paranoid, claustrophobic feel of the film. Director Tony
Scott clearly demonstrates his ability to use cameral angles and lighting to evoke the feelings central
to the theme of the film. Tony Scott has a reputation as a master of the visually appealing action
film. (Tony Scott) He does not fail to live up to that reputation with Enemy of the State. He keeps up
a quick pace throughout, using a multitude of finely–choreographed chase scenes and narrow
escapes guaranteed to bring audiences to the edge of their seats. High levels of speed and intensity
are even used in the transitional scenes, giving the impression that every moment you

Examples Of Selfishness In An Enemy Of The People
In Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People, he showcases and explores theme of naivety and
selfishness lead to the wrong decisions throughout his play with the use of both detail and diction.
With these in mind, he demonstrates the significant value and importance of properly understanding
the truth and relevance in this play. The play begins in an unnamed town, in southern Norway.
In the play, Ibsen often portrays the main character, Dr. Thomas Stockmann, as an individual who is
not only naive and childish, but out–of–touch with his own reality. This allows the reader to
perceive these characteristics through his giddy actions and tone of voice. In Act I, Scene I, Dr.
Stockmann returns with company and says, "Look here – here is another guest for you, Katherine.
Isn't that jolly!" (5). The readers' very first impression of a man who is presumed to be professional
and will end up taking care of the town, is of a grown man who has just returned home and is more
excited to showcase the large amount of meat he has with due respect as they finally have the money
to share their meat. Later, he continues to showcase his newfound wealth by saying, "...and we have
got a lamp–shade too. Do you see? All out of Katherine's savings!" (7). While it is clear that
Stockmann is still excited to show off that he has money, he goes about this in a childish and
condescending way. This is one of the many consequences that can result from naivety. Although,
that's not to say that he shouldn't be

Enemy Mine is a 1985 German American science fiction film directed by Wolfgang Petersen and

With the help of the Director's excellent choice of shots, music, and special effects, along with the

true, as we can see that all these individuals know about each other are just stories that have been

more similar to our enemies than we think and possibly have more in common with those we hate.
These facts are emphasized as Davidge and Jeriba learn more about each other and are especially
indicated when we saw the scene where Davidge was reading some of the "Great Chismrrarr's"

The zombies body was in remarkably good shape, the flesh wounds had healed quickly due to the
nano tech. Zero stretched the things tendons before waking Dana from her slumber. She had taken a

to tell him she was wide awake now and he left her alone. Something about this body disturbed the
human and it was something Zero couldn't understand. The Tic pod was cramped at best holding a
small squad and not much more. Releasing the hatch he watched as powerful hydraulics forced open
a jaw like structure designed to tear open enemy ships. The wall crumbled under the pressure,
opening a clear path into the next room. Dust swirled in the air and the lights flickered giving the
room a menacing feel, although to the artificial intelligence they were all just variables that could

but it might at least buy them a little time and give them an opportunity for a few cheap shots. He
gave a nod to Dana who was just exiting the pod, her shaken, gaunt look actually portraying her

Enemy At The Gates
Enemy at the Gates is a war film which the title is taken from William Craig's 1973 nonfiction book
Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad, which describes the events surrounding the Battle of
Stalingrad in the winter of 1942 until 1943. While fictional, the film is loosely based on war stories

Is Training For Success?
It can be said that training is the forcing of habits onto an individual or group in order to get a
desired outcome with little to no thought. Therefore, individuals conducting training implant habits
in the student, we draw from these habits on the battlefield when initiative, momentum, and violence
of action are imperative to success. These habits allow action with barely a pause. Adversely, habits,
training, and strict adherence to specific tasks without adjustment to the situation can, and often
times in the face of an intelligent and adaptable enemy, lead to catastrophe. It is imperative that in
the ever changing environment of the battlefield we must assess an action or decision that led to
success against the current situation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether yelled during patrol after the crack of a bullet, or talked about at night while discussing the
other Companies. A word that in month one had caused fear was now nothing more than a routine

bullet casings, but never a shooter, two shots, then gone, we imagined he truly enjoyed his game of
hide and seek. Small changes to the situation became commonplace, right side unable to establish
cordon due to obstacles, the number of homes inhabited or not. Small indicators that initially raised
red flags became the norm. Strategically, one indicator of success is finding, engaging, and
destroying the enemy. However, a common interpretation of success made at the team and squad
level is completing the mission with the same individuals you began it with. This validation of
actions as seen through a minimized idea of success reinforced a pattern of habit, as opposed to
thought, and allowed the enemy to slowly train actions like a rat in a maze. 29 September, 2007,

Talking to the Enemy
Psych 253 Book Review: Talking to the Enemy
Richard Marion
In his book Talking to the Enemy (2010), Scott Atran uses his experiences in the countries often
perceived as the origin of most global terrorist actions against the United States combined with
scientific proof from a wide variety of sources to argue for new methods of understanding and
stopping terrorism as it exists today. Though many examples and analyses of terrorist acts are
examined in the book along with many different explanations for the social and psychological
mechanisms that may cause them, one of the central ideas is the power of social bonds to drive
people to commit actions that they never would have considered alone. This paper will analyze

say whether the students relative willingness to kill non–Muslims is resultant from their
perception of non–Muslims as less like them or if it has been drawn directly from the teachings they
have received. It should be noted that another finding of social psychology is that attitudes and
behaviour are generally not strongly correlated (Eibach, 2012) and that when taken alone the
interviews do not show a direct correlation with violent actions. However, other references that are
made both in the book and within Atran's research does lead to a more conclusive link. Ultimately
despite the weakness of its small sample size and the fact that it only shows an explicit attitude
rather than behaviours that might be resultant from that attitude, the research is persuasive in that it
shows a clear link between the degree to which outsiders are seen as being unlike the students and
the degree to which they display hostile attitudes towards outsiders. In addition, this has been shown
in a way that is highly relevant to ideas and facts presented in Talking to the Enemy, in that the
students from the JI affiliated madrasa were far more likely than the others to endorse violence, and
in fact within the same study it is stated that "JI–linked madrasa attendance rates of the jihadists that
took part in... (a number of prolific bombings) are 19 times greater than the highest estimated rates
of the general population."

Essay On Intimate Enemies
"Intimate Enemies," (L'Ennemi intime), a French war film based on the Algerian war, presents a
convincing portrayal of the psychological trauma of French soldiers fighting against Algerian
insurgents. This movie reminded me of the barbarity of war and its detrimental effects on the people
involved.
The movie takes place in the remote and mountainous regions of Algeria in 1959 where the French
army is fighting with the Fellagha (Algerian insurgents). The soldiers there are joined by Lieutenant
Terrien who is a new, naïve and idealistic officer. Terrien quickly faces events that challenge his
moral beliefs such as village massacres, prisoner tortures and shooting of civilians. Initially he
resists the savagery of the other soldiers and officers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Terrien states that "if an order is morally unacceptable, then you should refuse it sir." The captain
counters that the FLN uses vile methods too, similar to how people were treated in Vietnam. He
contends that the warfare in Vietnam and Algeria was less military but more psychological.
Interestingly, Terrien responds by questioning the nature of Algeria with regards to France. If
Algeria is France, then why are Algerians not treated equally as French citizens? The captain replies,
"You'll come around, just like we all did." The nature and system of the conflict was the issue, not
the actual atrocities committed by both sides. Those wrongful attacks or methods were results of the
main political differences of the French and Algerians. For me, I wonder if France truly tried to
assimilate Algeria and give Algerians the same citizenship and rights as Frenchmen, would the FLN
be this violent and adamant about independence? It was clear in this movie (and in Battle of Algiers)
that the FLN initially was a minority in Algeria but due to French counterinsurgency, the majority
decided to pick the lesser of two

Feminism In The Crime Film Genre Essay
Feminism In The Crime Film Genre
Throughout motion picture history, women have experienced more transition in their roles, as a
result of changing societal norms, than any other class. At first, both society and the movie industry
preached that women should be dependent on men and remain in the home, in order to guarantee
stability in the community and the family. As time passed and attitudes changed, women were
beginning to be depicted as strong willed, independent minded characters, who were eager to break
away from convention. The genre of the crime film represents such a change in the roles handed to
women. Two films that can be contrasted, in order to support this view, are: The Public Enemy by
William Wellman (1931) and Bonnie ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women were now being portrayed as powerful, unpredictable, and possessing a mysterious sexual
power, which they used to elude male control. The 1960's also brought with it his tensions that
resulted the escalating war in Vietnam, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, black ghettos going up
in flames, the women's liberation movement, the youth anti–war rebellion and free love theme, and
the Civil Rights movement. It was safe to say that the American public had violence on its mind and
the movie industry capitalized on the public's apprehensions.
Director Arthur Penn used Bonnie & Clyde as his medium to imprint the rebellious tone of the
1960's and the uncertainty of the dominant values and norms of society. When we're first introduced
to the character of Bonnie Parker (played by Faye Dunaway), the camera focuses on her as she is
admiring her naked body in the mirror. She then falls back on her bed and the camera views her
from the outside of her bed rails, in order to give the viewer the impression that she feels imprisoned
by her everyday life. Then, she looks out her window and sees a man attempting to steal her
mother's car on their front yard lawn. She calls out to him and hurriedly puts on clothes to meet him
outside. He quickly intrigues her curiosity by saying that she looks like a movie star stuck in a

Enemy Within, Enemy Without
"Anna Magnani stars as a resourceful working–class Roman mother trying to overcome her
unfortunate past to give a better life to her children, even as outside threats threaten everything she
has worked so hard to build." This vague framework could easily describe both Roberto Rossellini 's
neorealist war drama Rome, Open City and Pier Paolo Pasolini 's irreverent rebuke Mamma Roma.
Rome, Open City concerns itself with the devastation the Italian people faced at the hands of their
German occupiers and their collaborators, the titular city and its inhabitants crumbling away in both
body and spirit over the course of a cruel winter. In their city's darkest hour, average citizens rise up

the film is quite admirable despite being unrefined and without the proper resources to express itself.
By the time Pier Paolo Pasolini wrote the script for Mamma Roma in 1962, Rome had undergone
quite the dramatic makeover. Reaping the benefits from American investment and the creation of the

The Irony in these two stories is initially expressed by their titles. At the Beginning of Enemies,
Jensen and Strunk are violently opposed to one another althoguh they are fighting on the same side

Iran: The Enemy of My Enemy
The United States and Iran have one of the most complicated diplomatic relationships in the world.
In its desperate hunt for oil in the mid to late 20th century, the US government tried to secure its
interests in the oil rich Middle Eastern states, in some cases, creating wars and problems that have
lasted decades. In 1953, the CIA helped overthrow Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister,
Mohammed Mossadeq, and replaced him with Shah Reza Pahlavi, who supported American oil
interests in Iran. In 1979, the Iranian people overcame the Shah, and in response, the US, UN, and
other western countries, imposed multiple sanctions against Iran, deeply hurting the country's
economy and people. Now though, more than 30 years later, the US and Iran may be brought
together by a common enemy of ISIS; an Islamic militant group based in Northern Iraq and Syria,
that has been violently attacking Westerners, and people of religions other than Sunni Muslim. The
US should take this opportunity to mend diplomatic relations with Iran, because Iran cannot
singularly be blamed for the actions that caused a cooling of relations. The present association and
mutuality of the two countries is rare, and Iran can help America's interests in the Middle East.
Firstly, it is important to understand the history of the American imprint in Iran. US backed leader
Mohammed Reza Pahlavi reigned from 1941 to 1979, apart from a brief stint in the early 1950s
("US–Iran"). In 1950

Enemy Combatants Scenarios
The war on terror has brought about much facets of democracy. The role of democratic principles
plays an important aspect in the way that individuals are treated. There are ongoing debates over the
constitutional right of non–citizens and citizens traveling abroad. The supreme court has not
suggested that US citizens arrested within the United States be treated any differently because he
was suspected of being a terrorist or suspected of such. The process that I chose to discuss is the
enemy combatant.
An enemy combatant is individuals arrested in the United States as terrorism suspects and held for
an unspecified amount of time incommunicado without charges, trial or even access to counsel.
Enemy combatants are also rendered bureaucratic rights by the courts (Article 5 of the Third Geneva
Convention). Their due process and the right to a fair trial has been regulated to a place where laws
of war and constitution are upheld. Lack of a trial by jury deprives a defendant of the rights to face a
jury of their peers, cross–examine the evidence that is held against them, and assistance of counsel
as expressed in the Sixth Amendment.

Guantanamo Bay is a U.S. Military maximum security prison that is considered a detainee camp for
unlawful enemy combatants. Guantanamo has become a worldwide focal point because of the
reports of abuse, torture and the prolonged trials for detainees and its closure and release of its
detainees has been called for by many. World leaders, media outlets and humanitarian organizations
have requested the closure and release of these detention facilities and their detainees, but it remains
vital that these detainees are tried and receive fair punishment for their acts of terrorism. In 2002,
the Bush administration adopted the already established Guantanamo Bay Naval Base to detain

Trench Life During World War One
The life of a soldier in the trenches during World War I was unimaginable to the people back home
in Canada. Soldiers carried out their duty to their country in the most horrifying conditions. The
trenches were rivers of mud and blood, food rations were very basic and designed only to keep the
soldiers alive, hygiene was non–existent, and military direction was poor as these men fought for
their country. Constant shelling and gas attacks made many soldiers feel that death was imminent
and a great deal of men suffered from mental breakdowns due to the war.
During World War I soldiers spent most of their time involved in trench warfare. A typical day in the

Sometimes the soldiers traveled from one place to another by train. Box cars, that had never been
cleaned and had little protection from the elements, transported the soldiers for up to twelve hours. It
was a very uncomfortable journey and the soldiers ended up stiff and wet.
Nights in the trenches were spent repairing damaged trenches with barbed wire, filling sandbags,
and digging new trenches, instead of sleeping. Soldiers were also sent out into "No Man's Land",
crawling about on their hand and knees, to find out information about the enemies military plans. It
was too cold for the soldiers to sleep with no blankets and they could not even try to keep warm by
exercising. Exercising would have the soldiers moving around too much, making them targets for
the enemy. When the men did try to sleep they often froze.
Even though the soldiers were supposed to only spend four days at a time in the trenches it often
ended up being longer. In fierce battles the men were sometimes in the trenches for up to twenty
days with practically no food or water, and very little sleep. When the soldiers came out of the
trenches they were "enclosed in a practically bullet–proof casing of mud". The men then had to
march from the trenches to the billets and were often shot down on their way.
Life in the billets was not really much of a rest. Cleaning muddy clothes for inspection was not easy

A system that performs well consistently, rather than one who can drastically rise or fall, seems to
end up more successful. That being said, a government should work with the market on sharing
accurate, complete information. The government in the play did not run of off accurate information,
but instead, it ran off of money and lies. A government that fails to do so can end up in a situation
like the one in An Enemy of the People. In this story, the government continuously withheld
valuable information to the people. By not telling the community that there was signs of pollution in
the water, this could affect all the lives, especially those lives of the young people who will one day
take over the government's leadership. This situation can relate to the reason and current incident in
Flint, Michigan where the individuals in the community were not told that their water contained
pollutants. This affected many lives of those young and old and presented a national uproar towards
those in charge. A sense of trust that once existed no longer remained. The government should have
notified the residents of Flint of the water quality in the first place. Once it was discovered that
many were becoming very ill because of this water, the government should have provided more
assistance in helping the community. Instead, most of the help was provided by good citizens from
all over the country. Whether in Michigan or any other state, communities everywhere began
questioning their local governments on whether they could be trusted or

Friends or Enemies
I sat there for the longest time. No one spoke, or if they did, I certainly wasn't listening. I mulled
over everything I had thought about him. The way we spoke with each other. How I felt when I was
with him. Everything pointed back to one answer, but it only made me depressed.
I really liked Ciel.
"Alice?" someone asked. I snapped out of my daze. I'd know that voice anywhere.
I turned in my chair and smiled, "Ciel!" I got up and hugged him tightly. He seemed a bit awkward
about it, but wrapped his arms around me.
When I pulled away, I was full of concern, "Are you okay? Did you get hurt? I'm so sorry, Ciel! I... I
didn't know how to help you."
"It's fine. We're back together now, right? That's what matters," he said. I nodded in agreement. I
was a little surprised he was brushing it off so easily. With anyone else, he would have chewed them
out for it. I was grateful for the reaction, of course, but considering the recent revelation, my
thoughts drifted to reasons of the change.
"There is no more room," March Hare told Ciel.
"Yes, no more room at all," Hatter joked. He gave me a knowing smile. He knew that I had figured it
out. If I hadn't, I wouldn't have hugged Ciel. I averted my eyes, angry for him being right at all. He
had just made things a zillion times harder because of pointing out that little fact. I really hadn't
needed it.
"Come, don't say that. Have a seat," Dormouse talked in his sleep.
"I haven't said anything, yet," Ciel pointed out.

The Wrong Enemy
Carlotta Gall's February 6 piece in the New York Times (NYT), titled "Pakistan's Hand in the Rise
of International Jihad," is a journalistic marvel. It spotlights the dizzying creativity a human brain is
capable of when paired with a massive axe to grind. Unfortunately, for prose jammed with so many
accusations, Gall's piece is surprisingly light on substantive sources. Oh, but she makes up for this
foible by heaping dollops of self–righteous Americentrism.
No surprises here. Gall, after all, penned "The Wrong Enemy: America in Afghanistan 2001–2014,"
a tome that must surely feature as essential reading for Pakistanophobes. In her book, Gall posits
that Washington's Afghan war strategy was flawed from the get–go. After felling the Taliban, US
forces should have kept marching east instead of invading Iraq. Why? Because without Pakistan's
patronage, neither they nor Al–Qaeda could ever have bloomed in the region.
Okay, so I will not harp on about the Union Oil Company of California's (UNOCAL) Taliban
connection, immortalized incidentally in an article titled "Oil Barons court Taliban in Texas" from
British daily the Telegraph's 1997 archives. I will not even dwell on Operation Cyclone, and how
Soviet–era mujahideen that spawned modern Islamic militancy were curated on Washington's orders

Let us start with Afghanistan. Yes, both countries have issues dating back to 1947. The former was
the only UN member to oppose the latter's entry into the world body, a result of misplaced anger at
the British Raj's exit plan. Later, Republican Afghanistan fueled Pashtun nationalist fervor inside
Pakistan as payback, tacitly supporting a secessional movement. Islamabad had no choice then but
to use Islamists as a counterweight, especially when Kabul cozied up to New Delhi for similar

Sleeping With The Enemy

  • 1. Sleeping with the Enemy In the movie Sleeping With the Enemy, Laura Burns, is living a life that many would describe as perfect. Martin is obsessed about keeping the house in perfect order. He is easily set off by simple things such as a towel being out of line, or a can out of place in the cupboard. Upon him discovering that things are "out of order," he resorts to severely beating Laura. The only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Regardless of the reasons behind why Laura does things the way that she does, I believe that this movie accurately portrays this issue that is faced by survivors of spousal abuse. However, one area that I don't believe the movie touched on enough was the psychological problems associated with survivors of spousal abuse. Walllace discusses that often woman suffer from such things as posttraumatic stress syndrome, depression and other symptoms that inhibit their ability to function within society. In addition the Department of Justice Canada states that "abuse may affect virtually every aspect of an abused person's life. It can harm their physical and mental health, their ability to work, and their relationship with their children and loved ones"In this movie Laura does not appear to be suffering from such things, in fact she seems to be coping very well, with the exception of the not trusting others, and not wanting to enter into another relationship. These mental issues are an important part of spousal abuse that I feel should have been portrayed more in this movie, in order for the audience to fully understand the wide variety of possible consequences of abuse. When looking at how this movie portrays Martin, I believe that it covers some very common areas that can lead to spousal abuse. First ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Trench Monologue Click. The tape recorder started up. "It was dirty that's for sure. The rats ate at your toes and the smell was horrible." Ed paused and wiped a tear from his eye, staring right across the table at his grandson, who preceded to ask the age–old question. "What really happened that day Grandad?" The grey sky hung close to 16–year–old Ed and the other soldiers as they stood, lined up in the trench. Rain poured heavily over their helmets, draining into the mud. The French sun hid hazily in the smog–covered sky. THUD THUD THUD, cannons pounded shells through the air, towards the Germans. "Get ready men!" shouted the commander. Next to Ed, a man named John loaded his rifle. "You ready Ed?" he whispered. Ed nodded. The silence through the trench was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It seemed like ages before he was free. He ran back towards the British line, expecting at any moment to feel a bullet rip through him. Then, out of the blue, a single shot rumbled across the dormant battlefield. Ed spun around just in time to see the German commander's pistol smoking. The machine gunner who had spared his life was slumped over, motionless. Moonlight flooded into the trench as the patrol officers found Ed curled up in a ball, weeping. "What is your name son?" "Ed Aarons, sir," he said, looking up. "I can't believe you're still alive! Your family is worried sick about you, back in England. You will be sent back immediately! This is an outrage! I'm very sorry, very sorry indeed." "When I got back home, I expected to be bullied by my family, like before. But it was quite the opposite. They were proud of me for surviving the war. I gave John's letter to his mother; it was a horrible experience to say the least. The whole thing is just senseless, killing each other. I hope no one else ever has to experience the things I saw. Public Enemy Movie Analysis Public Enemies Movie Analysis Amy Jo Parrish Troy Montgomery University Introduction to Criminal Justice September 29, 2017 943 Gipson Street, Prattville, AL Aparrish149539@troy.edu Public Enemies Movie Analysis Director Michael Mann releases his movie Public Enemy to the public on July 1, 2009. This nonfiction biographical movie of the character John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) fascinates the viewers with his charming self, witty audacity, and bold bravery of his gangster–style bank robberies during the Depression era of America's greatest crime wave. Characters such as Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham), Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum), Homer Van Meter (Stephen Dorff), and Evelyn 'Billie' Frechette (Marion Cotillard) displayed their elusiveness of the federal agents with their burglaries through Ohio and Indiana as the American gangsters. Labeled by J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) as America's first Public Enemy Number One, Dillinger's brashness erupted even more. The enlistment of FBI's top agent, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), gave the instructional task of bringing in this charismatic and troubling evildoer Dillinger dead or alive. Nevertheless, this movie introduced us to this charming character Dillinger. The comparison and contrast of the true realities verses the movie actually handles the injustices differently than what the screen displays. Drama, bad boy image, lovers, and reckless abandonment of the law lures us to an unrealistic reality to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. A Friendly Enemy Essay A Friendly Enemy "Death is my wish for myself, my enemies, my children" (Euripedes translated by Robinson Jeffers, Medea 11). Medea is hungry for death. She wants to taste it on her lips and wishes others to do the same. The value which Medea gives death is to use it as a weapon against her enemies. On the other hand, the women and the nurse fear death. Death,to the women and to the nurse is something that should not be wished for. "O shining sky, divine earth, Harken not to the song that this woman sings" (13). One of the Greek women says this, for Medea is screaming out that she would like to die. The women and the nurse hear Medea wishing for death as if it were a treasure or something valuable. The nurse and women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To a Greek woman death is personified as a hunter or killer. She uses an animal, the hawk,to compare to death. A hawk is a swift predator that attacks unnoticed, but to Medea death is a trophy. For Medea death has a value of importance. A friendship has been established. Death is Medea's friend. She uses it as a weapon to get what she views as justice. "Then if you have a dog eyed enemy and needed absolute vengeance . . . Unchild him, ha? And then unlife him"(23). Medea believed with great depth to get vengeance upon Jason. She wanted to go through with her vengeance and hurt Jason as Jason hurt her. Jason left Medea for another woman thus leaving her miserable and craving for revenge. Thus, she went on taking the life of his bride–to–be and the life of their children. She also wanted to wash herself from the impurities of Jason's touch. "Ah, rotten, rotten, rotten: death is the only water to wash this dirt" (12). This is a metaphor for she compares death to a water, which is a symbol of pureness, to cleanse herself. The nurse and women have almost pleaded to Medea not to even think about death, but because of her resentment and hate towards Jason she is deaf to the women's advice. The importance given to death by Medea is rejected by the women. Death would only make things worse in the women's eyes. To Medea everything will be put in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Improtance of Accountability Essay THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY IN THE ARMY AND THE POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE IMPACT IT CAN HAVE. By: SGT Looper, Harley Whether you are dealing with property or personnel, proper accountability is of the greatest importance in the Army. Having proper accountability can make or break your mission. As an NCO one of my main responsibilities is the accomplishment of my mission. Knowing where my soldiers and my equipment are will help me to succeed in accomplishing that mission. There are many things that can pop up on a day to day basis that can require my immediate knowledge of where my soldiers are. For example, if we have an IDF (indirect fire) attack and one of my soldiers got injured my knowledge of where they are could make the difference ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then he gets back in the truck to continue his convoy. While riding down the road the weapon falls off and no one has a clue. Later that day the weapon is picked up by MR. Taliban. Now MR. Taliban has a very effective and battle proven weapon. He could use that weapon to potentially hurt another soldier, and it would all be due to PVT Snuffy's lack of accountability. Luckily for PVT Snuffy, he has SGT Hero accounting for his sensitive items. SGT Hero notices that Snuffy does not have his weapon, and inquires about its absence. SGT Hero then makes Snuffy retrieve his weapon before they continue the convoy, and later provides PVT Snuffy with the appropriate corrective training to make sure it does not happen again. By maintaining proper accountability of his and his soldiers sensitive items, SGT Hero met his responsibilities and helped to accomplish the Organizations mission. Whether you are dealing with personnel or equipment, accountability is of supreme importance. It ultimately always leads back to the effectiveness to complete the mission. If the Organizations mission is impeded in any way, it can inadvertently affect the moral, welfare, and even the faith a soldier has in their leadership. As an NCO I will not fail my soldiers, I will accomplish my mission, I will properly account for all personnel and equipment, and I will provide all the tools necessary for my Organizations mission to be a paramount ... • 11. The Red Badge Of Courage Essay Henry Fleming's character changed several times throughout The Red Badge of Courage. These changes showed how Henry became a man and how he gained the confidence and courage required to be a soldier. In Chapter 1, Henry is completely engaged in his own thoughts. He daydreams about his farm, his home, and the conversation he had with his mother. This shows that, at the beginning of the novel, Henry is excited and has unrealistic ideas of glory. He is a dreamer. He doesn't think of death, especially not the possibility of his own death. In Chapter 2, Henry starts to connect with the other soldiers in his regiment. He listens to the soldiers talking the enemy and the coming battle. As he listens to these stories, Henry doesn't know if they are all true and because he doesn't know if they are true and whether or not to believe them, he starts to become afraid. He keeps his feelings to himself, separating himself from the others. In Chapters 3 and 4, Henry's fears and doubts are increased by rumors from soldiers. At this point in the novel, he has seen battles but has not been part of one yet. Henry's fear of not knowing what will happen grows because he has not seen the enemy. His fear of the unknown is greater than the idea of having to face the problem head–on. The first major character change that Henry made was in chapter 5. It is the first day of the first battle for Henry and the other soldiers. As he forgets his doubt and fears about how he performs, he stands tall and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These new hacktivists have brought with them a new form of law enforcement punishment on the basis of hacktivist crime. The impressive amounts of protests and internet sit ins went hand in hand with law enforcement that was equally as impressive. FBI and police have detained hundreds of activists and levied astronomical fines sometimes reaching nearly $500,000 over the past year (Coleman, 401–402). By increasing penalties, law enforcement ensure that hacktivism would cease. For instance, hackers of the Islamic State known as the Cyber Caliphate seized control of the U.S Central Command's Twitter account and hijacked a French T.V network in early April. These hackers were to be found with lifelong sentences in detainment facilities if ever caught. With the wake of hacktivism, law enforcement have placed astronomical punishments to derail hacking–based crimes. This quarter, I have been reading The Persuader by Lee Child. The main character, Jack Reacher, is an ex–military cop, now a wandering lone wolf searching for justice. Two DEA agents approach him with a situation: they had an agent on a case who is now missing, but they can't open a case with the FBI because of legal issues. They know that Reacher is adroit in combat and undercover operations, and he accepts their request. Right off the bat, I observed short, quick sentences showing Jack's thoughts. Since he used to be in the military, he absorbs every little detail around him, predicting all of the possible outcomes. An example can be shown in this quote: "Duke went back to his car. It bounced off the shoulder and straightened up. I followed him through the two miles. We killed our lights a hundred yards short of the driveway and made the turn. Took it slow. There was some moonlight." His fast and almost incomplete thoughts make him seem ready to react at any moment. While making Reacher's character consistent, Lee Child also demonstrates thorough knowledge about military technology topics. At one point in the book, Reacher uses an "old school" code to communicate a secret message to someone. Also, with each weapon that comes up in the book, Jack Reacher seems to have a deep understanding of all of them. This adds to making him seem even more like a real character because of his military background, so he would obviously have to know a lot about guns and other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the United States the most common is the famous Sweet Sixteen which as in the name states: relates to being sixteen years old, getting a car, and having some sort of celebration to commemorate the birthday. Among others include the Quinceanera which is usually equated with Mexico and Bat Mitzvahs which is a Jewish girl's rite of passage. Another rite of passage, called Kinaalda, is a puberty ceremony that holds the same importance and significance among the Navajo tribe as their creation story. Unlike American society, during the people's lifetime there is not a time between child and adult. In the Navajo culture it seems that it is more plausible to say that the time between being a child and adult or as stated by Leighton and Kluckhohn (1947), "physical maturity and social maturity are more nearly coincidental." Meaning unlike the American culture where the gap between childhood and adulthood is filled with an adolescence, and in the Navajo tribe this gap is not prolonged and instead this transition is commemorated by a four–night ceremony. This process begins at the Navajo girl's first menstruation and is a way to announce to the whole community that she has become a woman. "Coyote and the Enemy Aliens" is a satirical commentary that effectively expounds on the intense objectification and dehumanization of Japanese Canadians during the colonial Canadian era. By depicting the grotesque living conditions, the Japanese were subjected to, King is able to critique the racist perspectives of the Canadian society. King condemns the actions of colonial white–men, depicting them as creatures engulfed in moral blindness that strive to fabricate an ideal white world. Moreover, King vividly portrays the idea of social dynamics, expounding on the helplessness of Citizens against dominant political powers. The climax of the prose illustrates the disturbing elements of socio–political history in Canada. The political entities stand in the near vicinity of the vehicle, "singing "O Canada." and waving flags". Through the depiction of this disturbing image, King criticizes racist political leaders in Canada that justified their crimes cemented on ideals of nationalism– reflecting on the moral conscience of colonial Canada. The insensitivity of white–men is expounded in their embarkment of engineering the atomic bomb. In the near conclusion of the story, Coyote travels to Los Alamos to "make the world safe for freedom". The white– men euphemistically portray the Manhattan project (in Los Alamos) as a catalyst of peace and prosperity. However, this notion is ironic as this project engineered a mass destruction weapon leading innocent people being evaporated in a second. King inputs this powerful idea to expose the Hippocratic nature of white–men in that era, who patronized themselves as saints, but in reality, were responsible for the construction of the most dangerous military weapon. The intensely grotesque perspectives and actions committed by coyote are a striking testament to how the general population was able to be manipulated based on ludicrous perceptions of Japanese propagated in Canada. • 25. Analysis Of The Poem ' Exposure By Wilfred Owen The poetry written in World War I was mostly dark and told of the terrible conditions of the war. The poetry shows how the soldiers suffered and struggled through unimaginable conditions. The conditions of the weather and battle were often brutal and uninhabitable; yet the soldiers endured these conditions. Nature was often a slow and painful killer. War is a constant in an ever changing world. It is easy to see that fighting is an almost futile attempt to conquer and prevail. The poetry from the war can express the pain of war in a beautiful manner. Through writing the authors can share the pain of what they experienced at war. The difficulty of war is viewed differently through the eyes of these two narrators, and while one views nature as the true enemy, the other sees the loss of people back home as the hardship. The point of view a person has is often shaped by their life experiences. The reader can see how war can change a soldier's ideals as they experience it. In the poem Exposure, Wilfred Owen writes about the mental toll war takes on the human mind. He writes about how the soldier is "worried by silence, sentries whisper, curious, nervous but nothing happens". This shows the soldier's paranoia during the night. The soldier's cannot rest even though it is quiet, because they are afraid of what they cannot hear. Their paranoia is taking over their minds and making them nervous about what is to come. • 27. The Theme Of Money In My Mortal Enemy By Willa Cather There are many themes and symbols shown throughout "My Mortal Enemy" by Willa Cather, from love to marriages, and choices. The motif I want to analyze is the motif of money. Money is used throughout the whole book, it used to help persuade decisions, it characterizes their lavish lifestyle, and it is what caused Oswald to become Myra's mortal enemy. Myra, being an orphan child was raised by her great–uncle, John Driscoll, who grew up a poor boy and made his fortune employing contract labor in the Mississippi swamps (10). The novel describes their lavish lifestyle in which they lived in a grand house on a ten–acre park and was the finest property in Parthia. Mr. Driscoll had fast horses that made national record, and Myra would throw balls and garden–parties, where she would have the band play their music (10). Myra's aunt said that Myra had "everything: dresses and jewels, a fine riding horse, a Steinway piano", and how her uncle took her to Ireland and had her painted by one of the famous painters there (10–11). At a youthful age, Myra did not care about money, though she cared about love. She fell in love with a gentleman named Oswald Henshawe, but Mr. Driscoll had an old grudge of some sort with Oswald father, and Driscoll did not like the idea Myra and Oswald being together. Oswald had left Parthia and went to college at Harvard; he then moved to New York and after two years he was in the position to get married (12). Then he wrote to John Driscoll for Myra's hand in ... (1984) One thing that stands out about Enemy of the State is its unique use of camera angles to set mood and tone. A good example of this is in the opening sequence. Vantages of Washington D.C. exteriors are spliced with shots of high–tech monitors and other devices tracking vehicles from fast– orbiting satellites. The camera changes angle quickly and unpredictably here, blending with this dizzying montage of images to set the frantic, overwhelmed tone of the whole film. Another example is the unique angles used during scenes depicting Dean having an argument with his wife and Dean being chased through a tunnel. The crooked angles used to present these scenes clearly convey the fact that Dean's life is being turned upside down. Some good use of shadow during indoor scenes helps contribute to the overall paranoid, claustrophobic feel of the film. Director Tony Scott clearly demonstrates his ability to use cameral angles and lighting to evoke the feelings central to the theme of the film. Tony Scott has a reputation as a master of the visually appealing action film. (Tony Scott) He does not fail to live up to that reputation with Enemy of the State. • 31. Examples Of Selfishness In An Enemy Of The People In Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People, he showcases and explores theme of naivety and selfishness lead to the wrong decisions throughout his play with the use of both detail and diction. With these in mind, he demonstrates the significant value and importance of properly understanding the truth and relevance in this play. The play begins in an unnamed town, in southern Norway. In the play, Ibsen often portrays the main character, Dr. Thomas Stockmann, as an individual who is not only naive and childish, but out–of–touch with his own reality. This allows the reader to perceive these characteristics through his giddy actions and tone of voice. In Act I, Scene I, Dr. Stockmann returns with company and says, "Look here – here is another guest for you, Katherine. Isn't that jolly!" (5). The readers' very first impression of a man who is presumed to be professional and will end up taking care of the town, is of a grown man who has just returned home and is more excited to showcase the large amount of meat he has with due respect as they finally have the money to share their meat. Later, he continues to showcase his newfound wealth by saying, "...and we have got a lamp–shade too. Do you see? All out of Katherine's savings!" (7). While it is clear that Stockmann is still excited to show off that he has money, he goes about this in a childish and condescending way. This is one of the many consequences that can result from naivety. Although, that's not to say that he shouldn't be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Therefore, individuals conducting training implant habits in the student, we draw from these habits on the battlefield when initiative, momentum, and violence of action are imperative to success. These habits allow action with barely a pause. Adversely, habits, training, and strict adherence to specific tasks without adjustment to the situation can, and often times in the face of an intelligent and adaptable enemy, lead to catastrophe. Though many examples and analyses of terrorist acts are examined in the book along with many different explanations for the social and psychological mechanisms that may cause them, one of the central ideas is the power of social bonds to drive people to commit actions that they never would have considered alone. It should be noted that another finding of social psychology is that attitudes and behaviour are generally not strongly correlated (Eibach, 2012) and that when taken alone the interviews do not show a direct correlation with violent actions. However, other references that are made both in the book and within Atran's research does lead to a more conclusive link. Ultimately despite the weakness of its small sample size and the fact that it only shows an explicit attitude rather than behaviours that might be resultant from that attitude, the research is persuasive in that it shows a clear link between the degree to which outsiders are seen as being unlike the students and the degree to which they display hostile attitudes towards outsiders. In addition, this has been shown in a way that is highly relevant to ideas and facts presented in Talking to the Enemy, in that the students from the JI affiliated madrasa were far more likely than the others to endorse violence, and in fact within the same study it is stated that "JI–linked madrasa attendance rates of the jihadists that took part in... The nature and system of the conflict was the issue, not the actual atrocities committed by both sides. The 1960's also brought with it his tensions that resulted the escalating war in Vietnam, the assassination of John F. It was safe to say that the American public had violence on its mind and the movie industry capitalized on the public's apprehensions. Director Arthur Penn used Bonnie & Clyde as his medium to imprint the rebellious tone of the 1960's and the uncertainty of the dominant values and norms of society. When we're first introduced to the character of Bonnie Parker (played by Faye Dunaway), the camera focuses on her as she is admiring her naked body in the mirror. She then falls back on her bed and the camera views her from the outside of her bed rails, in order to give the viewer the impression that she feels imprisoned by her everyday life. Then, she looks out her window and sees a man attempting to steal her mother's car on their front yard lawn. She calls out to him and hurriedly puts on clothes to meet him outside. Enemy Within, Enemy Without By Anna Magnani Enemy Within, Enemy Without "Anna Magnani stars as a resourceful working–class Roman mother trying to overcome her unfortunate past to give a better life to her children, even as outside threats threaten everything she has worked so hard to build." This vague framework could easily describe both Roberto Rossellini 's neorealist war drama Rome, Open City and Pier Paolo Pasolini 's irreverent rebuke Mamma Roma. Rome, Open City concerns itself with the devastation the Italian people faced at the hands of their German occupiers and their collaborators, the titular city and its inhabitants crumbling away in both body and spirit over the course of a cruel winter. Much like the characters themselves, the film is quite admirable despite being unrefined and without the proper resources to express itself. By the time Pier Paolo Pasolini wrote the script for Mamma Roma in 1962, Rome had undergone quite the dramatic makeover. • 53. Irony In Enemies The Irony in these two stories is initially expressed by their titles. At the Beginning of Enemies, Jensen and Strunk are violently opposed to one another althoguh they are fighting on the same side of a brutal war. At the end of Friends, although Jensen didn't take action to kill Strunk, he is relieved rather than aggrieved to learn of Strunk's death, although the two are supposed to now be friends. These stories represent the war's view on friendship, and how distorted that emotion becomes. O'Brian implements irony in Enemies is to show how in war even friends can or will become enemies. • 55. Ir The Enemy Of My Enemy Iran: The Enemy of My Enemy The United States and Iran have one of the most complicated diplomatic relationships in the world. In its desperate hunt for oil in the mid to late 20th century, the US government tried to secure its interests in the oil rich Middle Eastern states, in some cases, creating wars and problems that have lasted decades. In 1953, the CIA helped overthrow Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister, Mohammed Mossadeq, and replaced him with Shah Reza Pahlavi, who supported American oil interests in Iran. In 1979, the Iranian people overcame the Shah, and in response, the US, UN, and other western countries, imposed multiple sanctions against Iran, deeply hurting the country's economy and people. Now though, more than 30 years later, the US and Iran may be brought together by a common enemy of ISIS; an Islamic militant group based in Northern Iraq and Syria, that has been violently attacking Westerners, and people of religions other than Sunni Muslim. The US should take this opportunity to mend diplomatic relations with Iran, because Iran cannot singularly be blamed for the actions that caused a cooling of relations. The present association and mutuality of the two countries is rare, and Iran can help America's interests in the Middle East. Firstly, it is important to understand the history of the American imprint in Iran. US backed leader Mohammed Reza Pahlavi reigned from 1941 to 1979, apart from a brief stint in the early 1950s ("US–Iran"). In 1950 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Army Duty In this scenario, where a platoon of enemy combatants has taken refuge inside a school in a nearby village, any law enforcement assistant is needed to save as many civilians as possible. As an officer, it is my duty to follow the laws and punish those who break the law. I also must follow orders from a higher officer, but for this scenario, my morals come first and I cannot just sit at the base and wait for people to die. My decision is to go to the nearby village and help the as many as I can villagers from the enemies. The plan is to form a group with other soldiers who have the same mindset as me. They will use villagers as human shields to protect themselves against possible gunfire, which makes it difficult to save the villagers unharmed. A couple of soldiers from the group will be left outside to take down any enemies who try to escape from the school. Negotiating with the main leader is our first option, telling the leader that he will have a surplus amount of money with a "safe" getaway for the safety of the villagers. If the leader refuses, they could most likely try to kill us. However, warning the leader, they only have 10 mins to get out the building, if not, the whole building is blowing up with preset bombs located in the middle of the building. This action is to show the leader we are not afraid to die, which in actuality, there was no bomb. Gunfire is bound to happen, lives are going to be brought to an end, and traumatic experiences will never be forgotten. There are ongoing debates over the constitutional right of non–citizens and citizens traveling abroad. The supreme court has not suggested that US citizens arrested within the United States be treated any differently because he was suspected of being a terrorist or suspected of such. The process that I chose to discuss is the enemy combatant. An enemy combatant is individuals arrested in the United States as terrorism suspects and held for an unspecified amount of time incommunicado without charges, trial or even access to counsel. Enemy combatants are also rendered bureaucratic rights by the courts (Article 5 of the Third Geneva Convention). Their due process and the right to a fair trial has been regulated to a place where laws of war and constitution are upheld. Lack of a trial by jury deprives a defendant of the rights to face a jury of their peers, cross–examine the evidence that is held against them, and assistance of counsel as expressed in the Sixth Amendment. These enemies have become his opponents in which they have showed that they clearly disagree with Dr. Stockmann's statements. World leaders, media outlets and humanitarian organizations have requested the closure and release of these detention facilities and their detainees, but it remains vital that these detainees are tried and receive fair punishment for their acts of terrorism. Soldiers carried out their duty to their country in the most horrifying conditions. The trenches were rivers of mud and blood, food rations were very basic and designed only to keep the soldiers alive, hygiene was non–existent, and military direction was poor as these men fought for their country. Constant shelling and gas attacks made many soldiers feel that death was imminent and a great deal of men suffered from mental breakdowns due to the war. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sometimes the soldiers traveled from one place to another by train. Box cars, that had never been cleaned and had little protection from the elements, transported the soldiers for up to twelve hours. It was a very uncomfortable journey and the soldiers ended up stiff and wet. Nights in the trenches were spent repairing damaged trenches with barbed wire, filling sandbags, and digging new trenches, instead of sleeping. Soldiers were also sent out into "No Man's Land", crawling about on their hand and knees, to find out information about the enemies military plans. It was too cold for the soldiers to sleep with no blankets and they could not even try to keep warm by exercising. Exercising would have the soldiers moving around too much, making them targets for the enemy. When the men did try to sleep they often froze. Even though the soldiers were supposed to only spend four days at a time in the trenches it often ended up being longer. In fierce battles the men were sometimes in the trenches for up to twenty days with practically no food or water, and very little sleep. This shows that Hovstad would ideally choose to go against the government, but he does not want to experience what it would be like to lose subscribers, and potentially, his business. A government that fails to do so can end up in a situation like the one in An Enemy of the People. In this story, the government continuously withheld valuable information to the people. By not telling the community that there was signs of pollution in the water, this could affect all the lives, especially those lives of the young people who will one day take over the government's leadership. This situation can relate to the reason and current incident in Flint, Michigan where the individuals in the community were not told that their water contained pollutants. Unfortunately, for prose jammed with so many accusations, Gall's piece is surprisingly light on substantive sources. Oh, but she makes up for this foible by heaping dollops of self–righteous Americentrism. No surprises here. Gall, after all, penned "The Wrong Enemy: America in Afghanistan 2001–2014," a tome that must surely feature as essential reading for Pakistanophobes. In her book, Gall posits that Washington's Afghan war strategy was flawed from the get–go. After felling the Taliban, US forces should have kept marching east instead of invading Iraq. Why? Because without Pakistan's patronage, neither they nor Al–Qaeda could ever have bloomed in the region. Okay, so I will not harp on about the Union Oil Company of California's (UNOCAL) Taliban connection, immortalized incidentally in an article titled "Oil Barons court Taliban in Texas" from British daily the Telegraph's 1997 archives.
