2. Educational technology is made up of two words Education and
Technology.
CONCEPT OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
• Acc. To Ross, the word ‘Education’ is derived from the
Latin word ‘Educare’ which means ‘to bring up’ or ‘to
raise’.
• The word ‘Education’ is derived from the Latin word
‘Educatum’, which means ‘To bring out’. In the sense, the
meaning of Education is to bring out the better qualities of
the individual.
It means that education is that process
Which brings up or rears the individual in the right
way.
Meaning of Education
3. The word “Technology” is derived from the two Greek
words namely Technic and Logia
Meaning of Technology
• Logia”- means “Science or Study”
• “Technic” –means “Art or Skill.
“Technology is the application of
scientific knowledge to a practical
purpose” – Page T
Technology is Knowledge organized for
Production” – Sachs
4. Defination of Education Technology
Educational technology may be defined as the application of the
laws as well as recent discoveries of science and technology to the
process of education” – S. S. Kulkarni.
“Educational technology is the application of scientific process to
man’s learning conditions” – Robert A. Cox.
Meanning of Educationsl Technology
“Educational technology is an application of
scientific knowledge about learning to
practical learning situation” – Bloomer.
Educational Technology means the application of technology in the
field of education to improve the efficiency of the process.
5. 1.Population Explosion
Populations of Asian countries are increasing at a very fast speed and we cannot educate all
these people just by using teachers in the class.
2.Fast Generation of New knowledge
New knowledge is expanding at a very fast speed. A teacher is not supposed to impart this
huge amount of knowledge by tutorial or classroom teaching.
3.Development of new strategies
It is the ET that has helped to develops new strategies in the field of education like,
Microteaching (inculcation of teaching skills among teachers), Programmed instructests
Instructional analysis (analysis of teaching materials into convenient parts to be presented
to students one by one)
4.Controlled Atmosphere
Education cannot be treated as plaything by some teachers after the introduction of ET.
It has made the whole process of teaching objective, clear, scientific and interesting.
The teacher controls the classroom environment in his own favour but his performance is
evaluated simultaneously by applying tests.
NEED AND IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
6. 5.Importance of Teacher’s role
It emphasizes theories & Principles of teaching more than those of learning.
Thus, it has removed many of the defects of ET and has raised the significance &
relevance of a teacher in the class.
6.Mass extension of Model teaching
The facilities of radio television and interest are new available of a large scale.
By demonstrating the effective teaching of renowned teachers on these media we
can benefit millions of students together.
Even the less effective and less skilled teachers can take the benefit of these
demonstrations & improve their teaching.
7.Advantages to private students
Many universities have given permission to students for private examinations, even
in higher education.
These students do not attend classes
In order to maintain standard of education in higher education, the use of ET
becomes a necessity.
8.Beneficial for teacher training colleges
Even teacher training colleges cannot produce good teachers without the use of ET.
It is because; this branch of education puts emphasis on the modification of
teacher’s behaviour.
7. 9.Improvement of school Administration
ET helps us to analyze the problems of school administration scientifically leading to
improvement in the system. This is done by applying various combinations of inputs or
adopting the procedure followed by the other school systems.
10.Preservation of knowledge
By using hardware technology, we can preserve knowledge in audio and video
cassettes, CDs & floppy disks (Pen drive)
11.Development of teaching models
When a definite combination of inputs and strategies gives good result repeatedly in a
number of class room situations.
It can be translated into teaching models to be used universally.
It can be also lead to the development of teaching theories.
12.Creation of Interesting learning situations
ET can transform the teaching-learning process from burden to enjoy which,
psychologically very sound for students.students (e.g.) use of material aids in teaching
increases the interest of students.
8. TYPES OF EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY (E.T.)
1. Hardware Approach
(Technology In Education)
2.Software Approach
(Technology of Education)
3.System Approach
9. Hardware Approach (ET 1) or Technology in Education
• The mechanization of teaching process is
termed as the Hardware Approach.
• Based on physical science and applied
engineering field approach.
• The new mechanism of teaching-
learning with improved technology as
its basis.
• A result of hardware technology the
development of electro- mechanical equipments
for instructional purpose.
.Eg. Microphones for making teachers voice fully
audible to the learners.
10. • Radio, TV, tape recorder, projector closed circuit television
(CCTV), teaching machines, and computers are used for
teaching the students
• Silverman (1968) called this type c educational
technology as 'Relative Technology'
Technology in educational serve the following
purposes:
• It provides the needed equipments for the
realization of different functions of education
• Enables training the teachers to handle and
make optimum use of equipments
• Develop a positive attitude towards these
appliances.
• It’s Adopts a Product-oriented Approach
11. Software Approach (ET 2) or Technology of Education
• Software Approach is concerned with teaching objectives in
behavioural terms, principles of teaching, methods of teaching,
reinforcement of instructional system, feedback, reviews and
evaluation.
• In software approach, the basis of a thinking
and working is behavioral science and psychology
of learning
• Software approach uses the principles
of psychology for the purpose of
behavior modification.
12. • A teacher with added knowledge of software approach can use the
films, flash cards, tapes etc, for various purposes.
• A teacher can plan better teaching which results into better
learning.
• This view of educational technology is
closely associated with the modern
principles of programmed learning
and is characterized by task analysis.
writing precise objectives, selection o
appropriate learning strategies,
reinforcement of correct response and
constant education (Davis, 1971)
• It’s Adopts Process –oriented approach
13. • Silverman (1968) termed Software approach in educational
technology as constructive educational technology
• Both software and hardware approaches are so
interlinked that they cannot be separated from each
other. One without the other is in complete.
• It is software approach which makes the
hardware approach function well.
• It includes TEACHING STRATEGIES,
LEARNING MATERIAL PROGRAMME
EVALUATION TOOLS, TEACHING
MODELS, PROGRAMMED INSTRUCTION,
14. • System is a set of connected things or parts forming a
complex whole, in particular. Eg digestive system.
System Approach (ET 3)
• The system approach involved setting goals
and objectives, analyzing resources, devising a
plan of action and continuous
evaluation/modification of the program
(Saettler 1990)
• It acts as a link between hardware and software approach.
15. • It is a modern approach in
education administration and
organization
• Also Known as Management Technology
• It has brought to educational
management a scientific approach for
solving educational administrative
problems.
• Education is regard as a system
and system approach is a
systematic way of designing an
effective and economical
educational system
