Midland/Odessa area. Midland, Texas was the midway point between Fort Worth and El Paso,
hence the name Midland . This midway point made Midland the perfect place for a railway stop
during the establishment of the railway. Soon after the Texas and Pacific Railway was active
and Midland became an oil bustling business town with pump jacks littering the outskirts of the
town. Midland then became organized by its own county legislator in 1885. Oil businesses
needed a place for supplies and oil gusher production to be stored until transportation however,
the location needed to be outside of town but not far enough away where it would be a burden to
retrieve. That is what made Odessa the perfect place to store supplies as Midland was roughly
forty miles away. Odessa merely existed in name until it became organized in 1891 as a supply

Throughout my field experience this semester, I learned a lot about literacy learners and teaching
/learning. From my final tutoring session, I learned that literacy instruction that works for one
student may not necessarily work for another and that it is important to teach literacy instruction
using a variety of techniques and strategies (Serravallo, 2015). First, I learned how important it is to
cater literacy instruction to the individual student. I have learned about many great instructional
strategies for teaching literacy but not all strategies are going to work for every student. It is

I discovered that although she had increased in her accuracy and expression she was still lack
the ability to read text quickly. Because her pace was slower, she would forget what happened
during the beginning and the middle of the book and only remember some of the ending. She
could summarize the story but it was not in any type of order, it was just a selection of things she
had remembered from the text. I think that I could have promoted Shuler s success in retelling by
selecting a simpler text. I struggled with finding a text that was at her reading level yet still had
enough to use for the retelling strategy. Overall, I discovered that Shuler needs more support in
building her pace of reading and keeping her accuracy when the pace increases.
I could have been better prepared for this lesson by selecting more than one text to bring with me
and by bring another guide for Shuler to read with. First, the text that I brought was a little to far
above Shuler s reading level. Because Shuler had made some progress and the book from last week
was easy for her, I wanted to bring a book that would provide some challenge for her. I was not
successful in selecting a book that met those standards. I could have been better prepared by
bring a range of books and then altering my book selection based on Schuler s current needs. I

The Columbia Race Riot was best known for being the first major confrontation following World
War II. It s a story of anger, fear, violence, and the law in a Tennessee town. The riot began with a
19 year old black navy veteran, James Stephenson and a white repairman. Their fight was over a
botched radio repair. James Stephenson escaped being lynched in Columbia, Tennessee. The story
had articles that were publish by Africans American and all white publishers. The newspaper
articles from the publishers had many differences, but also had many similarities. The Nashville

The Nashville Globe: Trouble in Maury, and Columbia Daily Herold: 2 Negroes Held For Attack
on Veteran, both stories had similarities, but one article was more in depth than the other.
Columbia Daily only discussed the arrest of James Stephenson and his mother, Gladys, for
attacking William Fleming, discharged Army Veteran, because of a radio that was not repaired.
The Nashville Globe stated that part of the story, but also mentioned the riot. In the Columbia
Daily there was one difference between each article. Columbia Daily stated that there were witness
at the attack on Fleming. In the Columbia Daily they alleged that Negros slashed Fleming with
glass, but in The Nashville Globe didn t mention anything about witnesses. As detailed in the
Nashville Globe no witness were present, also James and his mother fought back while Fleming
