Seminar Homework Assignment 1 Paper 1 Title: The Effect of Sub Contracting on Construction
Time for Commercial Projects in Chennai, India, by I. Choudhury, Texas A M University
Objective: The main objective of the study was to examine the factors and parameters that affect
the actual construction time in commercial projects in Chennai, India. Methods of Research: The
data was collected regarding the commercial projects in Chennai were collected from a few leading
design and construction management companies, based in Chennai. A mathematical relationship
devised by Bromilow (1980), between the cost of completed project and time taken to complete
the project, was used to show how the time performance is affected by the size of the... Show more

Other factors found to have an effect on the time of construction of a commercial project include
design changes, poor labor productivity, inadequate planning, resource shortages and subcontractors
on a project. Factors not affecting the time of construction of a commercial project include, number
of change orders or the level of supervision provided by the Architect Significance of the Findings:
The findings explains the factors that affect the construction time of a commercial project in
Chennai, India. The findings provides evidence that there is not only a relationship between project
cost and project time but, also a significant relationship between the number of subcontractors on a
project, and its construction time, which can help project managers better optimize their resources
and reduce cost and time overruns. The findings helped to identify new factors contributing to the
construction time of a project such as design changes, poor labor productivity, inadequate planning,
resource shortages and subcontractors on a project. Paper 2 Title: Cultural Effect on Residential

The Effects Of Long Term Meditation Practices On The...
Abstract Substantial research has been done on the positive effects of long term meditation
practices on the promotion of cognitive functions. However, the effects of brief meditation practices
have not been as thoroughly researched. Accordingly, this study will further investigate the effects
of short term mindfulness based training (MT) on the multiple traits of attentional processing. I
hypothesize that brief MT can have similar results to that of long term practices, indicating that
meta cognition can be improved in a short period of time. This experimental study will compare a
MT group, a relaxation group, and a control group all made up of inexperienced participants on
their performance of higher order processing of attentional tasks. We predict that the MT group will
do better than the other groups on all tests administered, and that they will improve significantly
compared to their previous performance.
Key words: Meditation, Mindfulness, Meta cognition, Attention
Introduction
Many recent studies have validated that people who have practiced mindfulness based training and
/or meditation express greater cognitive flexibility. Mindfulness is a psychological state
characterized by full attention to a present experience without elaboration of thought or emotional
reactivity while focusing on the sensations of one s breath and body and maintaining relaxation.
Thus, MT heightens meta cognitive processing to an extent (Austin, 1998 as found in Zeidan,

Political Humor And Satire In The Show Black-Ish
The show Black ish displays political humor and satire by using concepts such as confrontation,
and discursive integration. Throughout this paper, I will be explaining how Black ish displays
these concepts, as well as proving that this text can be considered politically humorous and
satirical. I will be taking examples from the texts Entertaining the Citizen and the article Let Us
Infotain You, as well as the show Black ish itself to help clearly provide evidence that shows that
show Black ish contains satire.
Black ish is a sitcom about a higher middle class African American family who lives in a suburban
neighborhood in California. The father is Andre also known as Dre Johnson who is an executive at
an Advertisement company. The mother... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Black ish Is a comedy show but at times it shows clips or images that are not more news like and
informative to the viewers. To show how Black ish I will be discussing one of the episodes of the
show from season three in comparison with the article Let Us Infotain You. In the episode 40
Acres and a Vote it used discursive integration. At the beginning, Andre had a slide playing sad
music with images of the Obama family on it. He then goes into a discussion speaking about how
Barrack Obama wasn t just important because he was the first black president, but because of he
gave a hand in showing African Americans that their votes not only were important, but they
counted. There then was a dramatization showing the process African Americans went through and
the abuses they experienced just to get to a place that showed their votes meant something. The
reason why I believe that this is a good example of the concept of discursive integration because
although Black ish is a comedy sitcom, it speaks on real life news situations that are happening
currently. In the article Let Us Infotain You the author s states, The blurring between news and
entertainment is exemplified by the fact that the National Enquirer s own reputation had been
enhanced and begrudgingly acknowledged by members of the mainstream press because of its
reporting during the O. J.

The US Economy In The 1930 s
In the 1920s America was under severe restraints that has caused division in the country socially
and culturally (Tindall et al, P.86). There was a time when law and order has no place in the
American society, people were deprived from their basic rights and no transparency was provided
by the state. The government of that time was reluctant to show any kind of progress that could
help the people. Crime rate was increasing and people were no more secure in their houses. Feudal
lords and Mafias were controlling the internal part of United States. People were forced to work as a
forced labor in factories or highway projects and they were paid less amount of money that can be

The Best Day Of My Life
If you want to live a happy life tie it to a goal, not to people or things. I think to myself as my dad
yells up the stairs. C mon Mer, get ready, his fruity voice echoes throughout the halls, booming as
if he had a microphone. Echoing off the walls and filling the entire upstairs with his deep voice.
Today is the day, my greatest dream and goal finally comes true. The day that dad finally lets me
tag along on one of his missions for work. I ve been nine for about seven months and he said I
was finally ready. He didn t even get to go out on a mission with his father till he was twelve.
That means I m way more advanced than him I don t even try to be modest when I mention it
practically every other second. This is literally the best day of my life! I don t see how anything
will ever top this, and the day has just begun. I ve been learning ever since I could walk to
follow in my dad and his father s footsteps to be a Mercenary. It s one of the highest paying and
provincial jobs in the Rapture Providence. Everyday I put 110% into my training and studying.
Now all my hard work is about to pay off. Dad has taught me everything I need to know, and I ve
learned a little about everything along the way. I swiftly throw on my clothes, run downstairs,
grab my FN Patrol Bolt Rifle, and take two steel bladed throwing knives and sheath them to my
body. Then I grab an apple and we re out the door. ***** Dad lets me scope out a hiding place
while we wait. He picked the area based off

The Effect Of Abundance Of Nutrients On Plant Morphology...
All plants rely on nutrients to help them repair damaged cells and grow, each nutrient with its own
benefit. For example, selenium increases plant resilience within harsh climates. Plant morphology
and growth is especially important for crops that are in high demand such as winter wheat grain
which has one of the highest worldwide production rates. The effect of the abundance of nutrients
on plantmorphology is further investigated in this study. This study entails winter wheatseeds being
placed in treatments of different concentrations of nutrients and observed and measured after two
weeks have passed. By keeping the environment constant, the effect of each treatment was measured
exclusively. The plants in the treatment without nutrients were noticeable shorter than those in the
treatments which contained nutrients. The results found suggest that the concentration of nutrients
is not as important so long as nutrients are included in the treatment.
Nutrients are an essential resource needed for plants to grow and replenish. They can be divided
into two main subgroups macronutrients and micronutrients. Most nutrients are absorbed through
the root hairs and can be used to repair tissues as well as run important processes such as
photosynthesis (Rush et al. 2016). For example, the nutrient Selenium is known to increase the
resilience of plants in harsh environments. In an experiment completed to see the effects of
selenium on wheat growth, it was noted that the Selenium

Chinatown Essay
Chinatown
Before the 1960s, the era of the Civil Rights Movement and People of Color Movements, ethnic
towns were formed due to the anti ethnic legislation, which forced many people of color to live in
certain areas of the city. After the relaxation of some anti ethnic legislation, especially in residential
segregation, these ethnic towns changed. No longer are these ethnic groups forced to live in
segregated areas due to legislation, but rather because of economic and cultural survival due to the
resources that are found in these ethnic towns. Chinatown, Korea town, and Thai town are ethnic
enclaves that formed due to this process.

Furthermore, Pilipino immigrants are already fluent in English because of the Philippine
educational system. Due to this ability to speak English, many Pilipino Americans do not depend
on ethnic economies for survival.
During the 1920s, Pilipino Americans congregated along the streets of Main and 1st streets, in
the heart of Downtown Los Angeles adjacent to City Hall. This area was the site of many pool
halls, restaurants, barbershops, taxi dance halls, and hotels where Pilipinos congregated. This
was the area known as Pilipinotown, Southern California s version of San Francisco s
Manilatown. However, in the 1930s, Los Angeles started the Bunker Hill Redevelopment Project.
The city plan was to redevelop the Civic Center, the Music Center, high rise hotels and office
buildings in the area where Pilipinos gathered. As a result, many of the earlier Pilipino Americans
were forced to leave this area, a clear act of racist gentrification. They were forced to move in the
current site of the proposed Pilipinotown, just west of downtown, around Temple Street and Beverly
Blvd.
Due to the passage of the 1965 Immigration Act, many Pilipinos started to immigrate to the United
States in mass numbers as they did in the 1920s and 1930s. However, in contrast to the earlier
wave of Pilipino immigrants, these newcomers formed families. Additionally, this new flock
comprised of mostly middle class professionals. Thus, they were not as transient as the earlier
working class

Explain The Sliding Filament Theory Of Muscle Action
The sliding filament theory of a muscle action has five phases. The first phase is resting. In this
phase there is no calcium available to bind the myosin to the actin. This is the normal state of the
muscle until activated by the excitatory phase. During this second phase, the sarcoplasmic
reticulum becomes stimulated. This releases calcium ions and binds with troponin. This is a
protein that is strung along the actinfilaments. Tropomyosin runs along the actin filaments. The
actin is pulled closer to the sarcomere. The contraction phase is when it gets interesting. ATP is
broken down into ADP in order to create energy for the contraction. To return to the normal state of
the muscle, ATP replaces ADP and aids in detachment of the myosin

Ignorance In Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey
In Northanger Abbey, Austen highlights the dangers of an educated woman and demonstrates
through Catherine that to be ignorant is far more beneficial. On a walk with Henry and Eleanor
Tilney, Catherine feels out of place as the they begin to talk about a subject she is unfamiliar with,
drawing. She becomes heartily ashamed of her ignorance, but the narrator says: Where people wish
to attach, they should always be ignorant... A woman especially, if she has the misfortune of
knowing any thing, should conceal it as well as she can (124). The narrator comments that a
woman should conceal her knowledge as best as she can because it is not a woman s place to be
well informed. An educated woman challenges the patriarchal system within their society since
knowledge gives men power and superiority. Therefore, knowledgeable women are unappealing
while imbecility greatly enhances their personal charms. The narrator demonstrates further

Analysis Of The Book American Writers
Out of all the amazing American writers no one compares to S.E. Hinton, better known as Susan
Eloise Hinton. Early life of Ms. Hinton was no different from anyone else. Susan Hinton wrote a
lot of amazing and inspiring books; her books were also about teens. Whether you are intrigued
by the early life, works, or about her writings of S.E. Hinton you will learn that she leads a
remarkable life. Hinton was born July 22, 1950 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She attended Will Rogers
High School this is where most of her writings were based from. While she was in high school,
she started her first draft, and also one of her books The Outsiders was published in 1967. This
book was actually based on her high school when the blue collar families which were called
Greasers yet on the other side of town were the Socs which were rich from the money in the oil
in the area. The Socs wore expensive clothes, and drove nice cars (Smith). Hinton wrote books
with the narrators as males, and she did not think boys would read her books because she was a
woman writer, so she used her initials as her pen name so readers wouldn t know she was a
woman writer. Hinton met a boy in her biology class as a freshman, he became the inspiration of
her second book ,and helped her with her writer s block by making her write until she got to two

Music Can Affect Human Behavior
Music can affect human behaviour and plays an important role in our lives from infancy to
maturity, evoking a variety of emotions and communicating messages about what is currently
happening or about to happen. People use knowledge of the world and their scripts and schemas as
a method of organizing the complex sets of information being input into memory. Schemas use
prior learned general knowledge about an event, a person, or a situation to provide cues of what to
expect in novel scenarios. Since scripts and schemas are developed from the experiences that an
individual undergoes, it makes sense that children would have fewer scripts and schemas in place.
Thus, adding a musical cue may help in comprehension and retention of information.
One reason that music likely enhances recall is that music may allow separate features of separate
events to become bound into one grouping as it passes from sensory to working memory. However,
the effect of music on the facilitation of cognitive comprehension in young children in recalling
novel information from working memory by manner of this binding of information is relatively
unstudied.
Music can be used to alter mood and facilitate positive interactions and cognitive functioning (Gold,
Frank, Bogert Brattico, 2013) as music acts as an auditory cue to the spatial pathways in the brain
and the motor cortex. As such, it may allow for faster information processing and comprehension
(Fagen et al., 1997). Pleasant sounding music has

The Debate Surrounding Australian Education Curriculum

The debate surrounds Australian education curriculum has become one of the most critical topics
by educators. According to Kelly (1999), curriculum can be, and is, used, for many different types

the school, whether it is carried on in groups or individually, inside or outside the school . (quoted
in Kelly 1983: 10; see also, Kelly 1999). These educational curriculums will not only focus on how
different curriculums are planned, but on the essence of curriculums that will ensure what have

primary core units that are compulsory for every VCE students. While local educators proposed
for a more practical approach to the new English/EAL curriculum with stronger emphasis on

text response and final exam. However, state policy makers prefered to remain the strong
academic focus in the new curriculum and ensure all students reach a certain level of academic
standard through SAC (school assessed coursework) and final exam. This essay will discuss the
essence of a good curriculum and then compare those two different approaches by review a
number of academic literature in order to discuss similarity, strength and weakness of both
approaches. The last part of this essay will discuss how the new EAL curriculum balance between
the two style of approaches and potential implication teachers and schools can draw from the
implementation of new EAL study design.

A Reoccurring Theme Of Mary Shelly s Frankenstein
In the novel, Frankenstein, Mary Shelly tends to create a reoccurring theme that isolation indeed
leads to the destruction of humans. There were negative consequences throughout the book when
isolation occurred, whether it was earned or unearned. From the beginning of this novel, Victor
isolates himself on his own because of his selfish interests in playing the role of God in life. Victor
s creation experienced negative consequences from being separated not only from Victor but the
world around it. Mary Shelly introduced isolation at the beginning of this novelby showing Victor s

This statement goes to show that Victor s addiction to the human composure is what lead to his
fate of isolation. Victor s creation received unnecessary isolation which created multiple adverse
consequences for him. After Victor had created this life from dead body parts, he abandoned it
because he was ashamed of the monster he had created. Victor was shocked to see that his
creation lacked basic human qualities and had an unappealing appearance. Victor was his
creature s mother, father, and Godly figure, who left him because he was incapable of being a
great being. This creation was innocent from the moment it was created because it had no choice
about its appearance or physical traits. If the monster blamed its isolation on anyone, it would be
Victor because he left it when it needed him the most resulting in the creation turning to nature
for all support. The creation is not only shut out by Victor because of its look, but society shuts
him out. too. I am alone and miserable; man will not associate with me, said Victor s creation in
the novel Frankenstein (Shelley 103). Victor s creature knew that his appearance would turn
people away, yet there was nothing he was able to do. The society that got a glimpse of this
monster was mortified by his grotesque like appearance and his in able to communicate well.

cheaper and why do t shirts cost the same as crop tops for women? Another really big issue that
is present is how companies present their advertisements they almost always only use skinny
models to wear their clothing. It creates false ideal body image for consumers because they think
they don t look good in the item and consequently, also causes eating disorders and a lack of
confidence by many shoppers. Double standards are one of the very big issues in fashion we are
moving towards a very innovative society and it is about time we stop seeing fashion as such a
feminine thing to be interested in because men can also be self conscious about what they wear
without having to be seen as a homosexual. We also have to work towards in changing how
people perceive others predetermined by the brands they can afford. Shown in Workman s
experiment, the assumptions that people who only wear store brand jeans are seen less of a tidy
person compared to a person in high end brand jeans is not reasonable. Some of

George Wolfowitz s Decision Points Essay
What motivated the Bush administration to invade Iraq in 2003 despite strong opposition from the
international community? On one side, the administration maintains that the invasion was
necessary to prevent Iraq from developing weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). In his memoir
Decision Points , Bush argued that Saddam posed too much of a threat he brutalized his own
people, violated international demands, and sponsored terrorist groups like al Qaeda. On the
opposing side, critics of the war argue that the Bush administration used the 9/11 terrorist attack and
the threat of WMDs to justify waging an illegal war against Iraqin order to extract Iraqi oil to fund
the military industrial complex, to secure Israel, and to finish the job of deposing Saddam. While
these explanations for the invasion have some merit, they are problematic because they fail to
capture the extent of the administration s actual ambitions. An analysis of how individuals on
Bush s administration, such as Paul Wolfowitz and Condoleezza Rice, viewed the world reveals
that the invasion of Iraq was intended to demonstrate the effectiveness of and necessity for
preemptive action, overthrow Saddam, and transform the Middle East. However, what was
perceived to be a quick and easy operation to stabilize the Middle East and secure America s
interest backfired and turned Iraq into a safe haven for terrorists.
One reason the Bush administration decided to invade Iraq was to set a precedent for the US to

Political Parties And The Media s Influence On Politics
Linkage institutions are a way of linking the American people to the government and political
process, and often influence the policy agenda. A few examples of linkage institutions are
political parties and the media. Political parties have always been a part of the U.S. government
since the federalists and antifederalists, and have since majorly evolved into what we now see as
the Democratic and Republican parties. The media has always been a major influence on politics
from the time of basic newspapers to the modern platforms of television and social media. (insert

Political parties link the american people to the political process by displaying a wide variety of

able to link the people to the political process by being elected, Each party seeks political power by

Japanese-Americans Racism-Discrimination
Each day we live, taking for granted everything we have. Freedom to choose where to live, eat,
work, and go to school. What would happen if all of that was taken away? And not just by another
country, but by our own people. Our own government took our rights and belongings away
overnight. What would people do? On February 19 of 1942, the president of the United States,
Franklin D. Roosevelt, signed an evacuation order, ordering the evacuation of all persons deemed
a threat to national security from the West Coast to relocation centers further inland ( ). Meaning
anyone who looked like they were of japanese descent, was considered a threat to the security of
the United States. The racism towards the japanese people was in the way they were looked at,
how they lived in the camps, and how they were treated. On December 7, 1941 there was a tragic
attack on an American military base in Hawaii, called Pearl Harbor. It was led by the japanese
empire. This is what started it all, with the racism of the different ethnic groups towards to
japanese people. Each time fellow Americans saw someone of japanese descent, it brought up
memories of this day in history. The emotions it stirred up the pain and loss, created anger and
hatred towards each of these people. The people of America were scared. The president decided
to send the people of his own country away. Some say it was for their own protection, but others
say it was just because we were afraid of the Japanese American people

Hypatia Research Paper
Hypatia of Alexandria was one of the first female mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher in

For about twenty eight years now the Asian elephant has been struggling for existence. They have
been classified as endangered species by The International Union for Conservation of Nature
(IUCN). Twenty eight years is quite a large amount of time for an animal to be classified as
endangered so The Zoological Society of London decided to look into this issue. Asian elephants
have been transferred to captivity for quite some time in the North American region. The Elephas
maximus have been captured from these countries in southern Asia and brought over to North
America and have experienced many complications that can hinder the genetic diversity of the
evolution of the species. Captive populations of the Elephas maximus species may be essential for
genetic preservation and aid in decreasing the deterioration of the authentic population (Brenneman

Unfortunately, keeping these elephants captive has caused issues. The females are at least 35

How Does Creon Obey The Gods In Antigone
In Antigone, Sophocles demonstrates that one should obey the gods above the state. Using
characterization, Sophocles compares the loyalties of Antigone and Creon, providing the gods with
the chorus support to show the views of objective observers and emphasize the proper devotion.
Antigone, the headstrong heroine, proves that honoring the gods results in a more favorable
fate. Right from the start, Antigone makes her opinions clear: the gods wishes are more important
than mortal laws. When speaking to Creon, she admits to transgressing his laws saying, Yes, for it
was not Zeus who had published that edict; not such are the laws set among men by the Justice
who dwells with the gods below (102). Antigone is portrayed as a martyr due to ... Show more

These pathos filled words remind the audience that Antigone is just a young girl who was
trying to help her dead brother be redeemed by the gods. Her pathetic martyrdom automatically
puts her in the right in the reader s eye. Who would face emotional torment and execution for
something she doesn t feel is absolutely necessary?
Creon, the new ruler of Thebes, exemplifies the consequences of allegiance to the state,
ultimately falling from grace. Aristotle s Poetics define Creon as a tragic hero: Firstly, he is high
born. He has too much pride, and Zeus utterly abhors the boasts of a proud tongue (95). And of
course Creon s hamartia is his dedication to the state: whomsoever the city may appoint, that man
must be obeyed, in little things and great, in just things and unjust (107). Teiresias verifies
Antigone s actions and discredits Creon s by offering a prophetic glimpse of the view of the gods:
you have thrust [...] a living soul in the grave but keep in this world one who belongs to the gods
infernal, a corpse unburied, unhonored, all unhallowed. In such you have no part, nor have

Renewable Resources Disadvantages
Renewable resources are resources that have the ability to be used in infinite amounts because it is
recovered naturally. Renewable resources are important to the survival of the world since it comes
with positive outcomes and there is an infinite amount. An infinite amount of something and being
repreoduced naturally means that it gives individuals something that this world has created for
them. There are many different renewable resources, which include solar power, wind, geothermal
energy, tidal power, and more. The number one renewable resource that has stood out is
geothermal energy. This energy deals with heat and it is being stored naturally from earth itself.
This renewable resource has many advantages and as with everything there also comes
disadvantages. It will be shown that the advantages of this renewable resource benefits earth
rather then its disadvantages. Geothermal energy is a renewable resource whose heat generates
energy to be used. Heat and energy go one in one with each other. Energy is the capability to do
something. Energy comes in many different forms such as mechanical, chemical, nuclear, light,
and more. Energy most importantly comes in the form of having heat energy. This energy is
created because energy goes through many different phases to get its final reason to be used. An
example of this is flashlights or lightening in homes. The uniqueness of geothermal energy is how
its final product has come to be, where it comes from, and why it is so

Sweat Gland Neoplasm Essay
Sweat gland neoplasms are extremely rare neoplasms. They can be classified into benign and
malignant variety. The benign variety have been sub divided into subtypes such as nodular,
apocrine and clear cell based on their histo pathological presentation. The malignant form or sweat
gland carcinomas are those that possess an infiltrative and/or metastatic potential. They are
generally classified into two groups. The first group comprises malignant tumours that closely
mimic their benign counterparts while tumours in the second group do not have a benign
counterpart1. Nodular hidradenomas are usually seen in third to fifth decade of life and are twice
more common in females2. Clinically the tumour usually presents as an asymptomatic, solitary, 0.5

The Negative Effects Of Rationalization In Food, Inc.
According to Weber, rationalization refers to the process by which modern society has increasingly
become concerned with efficiency, predictability, calculability, and control (Weber 2009). This
leads to behaviors that are guided by reason and practicality. In the film Food, Inc. (2008), the
owners of the meatcompanies wanted to produce their products in a rational manor. The film
portrays the side of the foodindustry that the companies do not want the consumers to see.
Although this rationalization may seem to be positive, there are many negative effects.
One example of food production in the film is the production of chickens. When interviewing the
owners of the chicken farms, they were extremely restricted on what they could say and show.
The farmers took out thousands of dollars in loans to be able to start their farms. The farmers do
not earn enough to pay off their loans, so they are in a constant debt. On top of this, the farmers
are required by the corporations to constantly update their equipment. If they do not update the
equipment, then they will lose their contracts. This further traps them in a cycle of debt and
dependence on the large corporations. If they do anything to go against the corporations, they can
easily lose their contract and be replaced. These chickens are raised in chicken coups where the
majority of them never see sunlight. They are given hormones to increase the size of the chicken in
less times. Scientist realized that most people prefer

Female Characters, By John Wyndham
Female characters are influential in John Wyndham s The Chrysalids. In the novel, three women
are of paramount importance in comparison to all others in shaping David s views and opinions:
Sophie, the Sealand woman, and Aunt Harriet. In the society of Waknuk, individuals exhibit
prejudice repeatedly throughout the novel through their own blinkered treatment of deviations.
David Strorm s, a twelve year old boy whose parents brought him up in such lifestyle, interactions
with those three women throughout the novel sways him to have second thoughts about it.
Their dealings with David each have a particular impact on his life. Sophie allows for doubt to
enter David s life for the first time; the Sealand woman expands his views and prompts him to
consider other beliefs different from those of his society; and Aunt Harriet makes him more
conscious of his society s despicable activities and more attentive to it. In John Wyndham s The
Chrysalids, Sophie, the Sealand woman, and Aunt Harriet are instrumental in influencing David s
outlook on society. Sophie allows for doubt to pierce its way into David s life for the first time. At
the start of the novel, when David first meets Sophie, he gets an insight into a deviant s life. She
has proven to be the first blow to efficiently impact David s thoughts and make him question the
authenticity of his society s belief system. It is hind sight that enables me to fix that as the day

Economic Systems And Economic System
An economic system governs how a society s resources are allocated between people, and so the
question of its morality is immensely important (Winfield, et al, 2014). This essay will analyse the
different economic systems by considering the two economic systems that fall on the extreme ends
of the spectrum of economic systems, these being capitalismand socialism. It will further discuss the
characteristics of each of these economic systems and based on these, argue that the mixed
economy is the best alternative economic system. The forms of regulations that create efficiencies
and those that create inefficiencies will be argued for and the importance and benefits of these
regulations will be analysed. .
A capitalist economic system is one that is predominantly characterised by free markets, private
ownership and limited government intervention. Free markets are commonly known for their
ability to achieve economic efficiency primarily through the volunteer nature of exchange and the
existence of competition amongst producers (Winfield, et al, 2014). Adam Smith believed that the
goal of every economic system should be to achieve economic efficiency through the mechanisms
of productive and allocative efficiency. Productive efficiency can be defined as producing goods
and services for the lowest cost while allocative efficiency is more concerned with the distribution
and allocation of resources in the economy to where they are valued most and can attain maximum
satisfaction for

The Country Club College- Inhibition of Eudaimonia
The Country Club College Inhibition of Eudaimonia Adding food coloring to drinking water will
not enhance its nutritional value. Also, an emphasis on enhancing the coloring, at the cost of clean
water, will degrade the function of water to provide nourishment. This same logic applies to
education. In articles written by the New York Times, Inside Higher Ed, and Brookings, colleges
across the country are spending increasing dollars on recreational facilities and administration than
on its academics. According to Aristotle, these actions will stifle the very purpose of education, to

According to an NMBER paper, most college students placed more value on amenities and high
levels of consumption than instruction ( Consumption Amenities in Higher Education ). This
deliberate sacrifice of academia by students for the country club will only fuel the drive for excess
spending on pleasure to attract potential students. Scott Jaschik s article details this agenda. The
Customer Is Always Right? described the race for amenities as the consequence of student spending
choices. In a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, four year colleges searching for a
way to attract a majority of potential students will invest in consumption preferences. By spending
more of the budget in amenities (student services and activities, athletics, facilities), colleges would
meet the high value students place on these categories. Since academic support and instruction
(libraries, museums, course costs) was only favored by students competing for highly competitive
institutions, the vast majority of four year colleges would not increase academic investment. The
cost of appealing the masses would be degrading academic quality ( Many Students Opt for
Colleges That Spend More on Nonacademic Functions, Study Finds | Inside Higher Ed ). The
metamorphosis of academic institutions to amenity centers affects both the students and society as

Franklin proved that lighting was electricity and his discovery led to our world, starting with
America, being more scientifically informed. One of the most courageous acts of mankind in this
world is fire fighting. Not many people may know this, but Benjamin Franklin was the founding
father of firefighting. In 1736, Franklin proposed volunteer fire companies that would gather men
quickly to extinguish a blaze. (Gausted 35) After a huge Philadelphia fire, Franklin founded
Philadelphia s first fire company the Union Fire Company, the very first fire department.
Franklin stated I sought to explain what caused them and how one could prevent such fires in
the future (McCormick 151) Franklin was very interested in learning more about the situation
and was concerned about the health and safety of everyone affected. Without his idea it would
have been long before actual fire companies were started. Before there were fireplaces, there
were fire places, where people would simply huddle together around a fire in their homes for
warmth. Then came Benjamin Franklin and invented the metal lined fireplace. Franklin had a
spurred interest in improving heating systems. At first people didn t have chimneys, they simply
made a fire and sat around it. It did people little good to huddle by a fire, he argued, if currents of
cold air then buffeted them. Many colds are caught that way. Franklin lectured it would be safer to
sit in the open street.

Foreign investors starving for fixed income securities that also had returns better than government
securities, decided to invest in mortgage back securities provided by Fannie Mae and Freddie
Mac. In order to take advantage of the savings glut Wall Street firms began to package many of
these sub prime mortgages together and create what was known as a mortgage backed security.1
A mortgage backed security, was an asset backed security that was secured by a collection of
upwards a several hundred mortgages. The issue was the mortgage back securities provided by
Fannie, Freddie, and investment banks were given good ratings by rating agencies such as
Standard and Poor s and Moody s, even though these assets were toxic. They gave the mortgage
back securities good ratings, because their risk assessment models solely used previous housing

investors believed they were getting secure assets with above average returns, but instead they
were getting very toxic assets instead. So the interest in these mortgage back securities continued

Negative Effects of Divorce on Children Essay
Negative Effects of Divorce on Children
Divorce has a strong negative effect on children. The children are brought into the family and then
ripped out of what they know is right or of their norms. James M. Henslin defines the family as
being two or more people who consider themselves related by blood, marriage, or adoption (445).
When married you are instantaneously put into a family. When two people decide to get a divorce,
their children do not wholly understand what is going on. Regardless of their age, children usually
blame themselves when their parents divorce (Bankston 382). They don t understand their parents

Some other downfalls, to the children of divorced parents, would be they start engaging in
sexual activity sooner, are more likely to have children out of wedlock, are less likely to marry,
and if they marry, are more likely to get divorced. They are likelier to abuse drugs, turn to crime,
and commit suicide (Leo 2000). These are all unfortunate incidences that could have been
lessened or even prevented. When Henslin stated that the family consists of two or more people,
this is still true for after the divorce. Henslin gives great points when helping children adjust to
divorce. The adjustment is better if (1) both parents show understanding and affection; (2) the
child lives with a parent who is making a good adjustment; (3) family routines are consistent; (4)
the family has adequate money for its needs; and (5) that the child lives with a parent of the same
sex (466).
When the parents show love and affection toward the children, their welfare is better in the long
run. These examples are only of the physical and emotional changes. Let s take a look at more
emotional changes that occur. These children are torn between their parent. They were never told to
make a choice between one or the other before and they are having a hard time doing that now.
Studies show that these children have more hostility, anxiety, and nightmares, and they don t do as

The Effects Of Heroin Abuse
Heroin use has steadily increased post Vietnam to current day, although it has seen a sharp climb in
recent years. This sudden spark in heroin addiction is termed the Heroin epidemic. The Heroin
epidemic can affect all members of society, and it does not discriminate between race, income level
or gender; the government fights the war on drugs but the community and mass media are vital in
the total annihilation of addictionand the epidemic. Many Heroinusers first interacted with opioids,
such as painkillers which is a close relative to heroin, but the cost was too much, so they turned to a
cheap and destructive drug, Heroin. Heroin inherits its addictiveness from the opioid family.
Opioids are extremely addictive painkillers such as OxyContin... Show more content on

The drug is a part of the highly addictive opioid family, which are used to make painkillers
needed by many Americans. The issue is that the many Americans who have used painkillers,
whether prescribed or taken illegally, are forty times more likely to try heroin ( Today s Heroin
Epidemic ). The epidemic is hard to control because it effects everyone. Not one gender, race or
economic level is considered safe from the abuse of this substance. The government has been
attempting to end the high levels of abuse in America since the late sixties, but old methods proved
costly and ineffective. The transitioning of viewing heroin addiction as a crime to mental health
has reaped some benefits. Facilities now a days have made break throughs in assuring better futures
for addicts by proving them with proper treatment and arming them with correct knowledge of how
to combat their disease. Heroin has sparked an important discussion in society involving media,
race, sex and economic status, and the epidemic forced the federal government to act accordingly,
which allowed communities to properly react and try to lower addiction. Though the rise of heroin
use will most likely continue, the epidemic has to eventually come to an end; whether the
government makes a final push to eliminate drug use completely or police enforcement cuts down
on dealers, the epidemic eventually

Los Angeles Times Policy Analysis
This first graph illustrates the diverse range of policy topics that the Los Angeles Times covered
on their front page during a full week. In the 56 stories analyzed, 20 different policy topics were
covered. The topic of law, crime, and family issues was covered most with roughly 18% of the
coverage followed by fires, weather and natural disasters, and immigration.
This graph shows that the Washington Post also had a diverse coverage of policy topics;
however, not as diverse as the Los Angeles Times. In the 56 stories analyzed, 14 different policy
topics were covered. Not surprisingly, government operations were covered most with 25% of the
news coverage. Law, crime, and family issues, health, and international affairs and foreign aid
followed this.
The two news outlets covered some of the same national stories like former president Jimmy Carter
s fight with cancer, the devaluation of Chinese currency, and the American hostage held by ISIS,
but much of the coverage throughout the week was different. With 75% more stories on government

Like the coverage of law, crime, and family issues. Both publications had this coverage; however,
the Los Angeles Times was dominated by this. Perhaps it is because Los Angeles area has a higher
crime rate than Washington D.C. or maybe crime is what the Times readers are longing for. It is
difficult to determine what different readers are searching for, but observing the range of policy
topics between the publications, it shows their agendas are set differently. For example, the Los
Angeles Times has multiple stories about sports and recreation while the Washington Post has none.
Both have stories about arts and entertainment and surprisingly to me the Post has more human
interest stories than the Los Angeles Times. This is something I am unsure of how to explain other
than perhaps a slow news

Equipment managers may seem corny or inadequate, but without them it would be difficult for your
team to compete. According to the Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA) (What Is
Certification, 2008), equipment managers purchase equipment; fit equipment such as football
helmets; checks, clean, and inspect uniforms and equipment to reduce wear and risk of injury while
preserving the life of the equipment and garments as part of the budget management process; and
establish a comprehensive accountability system that includes inventory, reconditioning, and
storage. Equipment managers play a key role in intercollegiate athletics, but sports information
directors are important as well. According to Staurowsky and Abney, sports information directors
are responsible for both technical and management functions. Sports information directors basically
make sure to spread the word of an event coming up. They hand out flyers, game programs,
newsletters and a lot more stuff. Senior woman administrator is the highest ranking female
administrator involved in the management of an NCAA institution s intercollegiate athletics
department. (NCAA, 2008,

Lord Call Samuel Research Paper
Throughout the course of the Bible, God has called countless to people to follow His plan for
them. Although some remain hesitant at first, it is seemingly impossible to altogether reject God s
calling. There are many examples of this in both the Bible and the world today. Samuel was called
to serve as prophet, Marywas called to serve as the Mother of God, and my grandfather was called
to serve as a deacon in the Catholic Church. God calls everyone to fulfill their vocation, but it takes
people different amounts of time to finally respond to that calling.
The Lord called Samuel to be the first of Israel s great prophets at time when much of Israel was
in a state of disunity. As the people called for a king to control the land, Samuel would serve as
the last of the Judges and a link between God and His people. Samuel s mother, Hannah, was
originally declared barren, but was granted a son after praying to God begging for a child.
Hannah promised God that if she was given a child that the baby would serve the Lord in his life.
Thus, Hannah gave Samuel to a priest named Eli (Bible).
One night when Samuel was asleep, the Lord called to Samuel. ... Show more content on

During Jesus s apostolic life, Mary remained uninvolved as to not interfere with his work. She
was mainly regarded as a typical Jewish wife at the time (Maas). Mary was present at the foot of
the cross as Christ completely sacrificed himself and also when the Holy Spirit came onto the
Apostles during Pentecost. As Catholics, we believe Mary was born free of the original sin called
the Immaculate Conception. At the end of Mary s life, she was brought to Heaven with body and
soul in the Assumption (Maas). The Blessed Virgin Marydevoted her to life to following the call

Chin The Largest Economy
At present, China is the largest economy in the world, overtaking the US in January 2015. It is
also the world s second largest oil consumer behind the US (Chen 2015) and the world s largest net
importer of crude oil (Dunn 2014). Its net importer status was driven by steady economic growth,
with rapidly rising Chinese petroleumdemand outpacing production growth (EIA 2014). China is
also the fourth largest oil producing country in the world (Refer to Appendix ___).
The growth in the developing nation s economy over the past 3 decades was heavily dependent on
its low cost advantage compared to those of other countries. During this period of growth, foreign
companies flocked to China to set up production facilities and factories to capitalize on this cost
advantage. Raw materials are shipped to China, where factory workers build the final products and
export them out to various countries (Wassener 2014).
However, recently, china s economy has experienced a significant slowdown due to the shift in
growth of the nation to rely more on private enterprise and domestic consumption. This shift in
economy reduces its demand for industrial raw materials for manufacturing, which translates to a
decrease in demand of oil for use in production plants. A survey of China s industrial heartland
identified decreases in key areas of new orders, export orders and output prices (Letts 2015).
Furthermore, being the world s second largest consumer of oil, this move that China makes will

  • 3. The Effects Of Long Term Meditation Practices On The... Abstract Substantial research has been done on the positive effects of long term meditation practices on the promotion of cognitive functions. However, the effects of brief meditation practices have not been as thoroughly researched. Accordingly, this study will further investigate the effects of short term mindfulness based training (MT) on the multiple traits of attentional processing. I hypothesize that brief MT can have similar results to that of long term practices, indicating that meta cognition can be improved in a short period of time. This experimental study will compare a MT group, a relaxation group, and a control group all made up of inexperienced participants on their performance of higher order processing of attentional tasks. We predict that the MT group will do better than the other groups on all tests administered, and that they will improve significantly compared to their previous performance. Key words: Meditation, Mindfulness, Meta cognition, Attention Introduction Many recent studies have validated that people who have practiced mindfulness based training and /or meditation express greater cognitive flexibility. Mindfulness is a psychological state characterized by full attention to a present experience without elaboration of thought or emotional reactivity while focusing on the sensations of one s breath and body and maintaining relaxation. Thus, MT heightens meta cognitive processing to an extent (Austin, 1998 as found in Zeidan, Johnson, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I will be taking examples from the texts Entertaining the Citizen and the article Let Us Infotain You, as well as the show Black ish itself to help clearly provide evidence that shows that show Black ish contains satire. Black ish Is a comedy show but at times it shows clips or images that are not more news like and informative to the viewers. To show how Black ish I will be discussing one of the episodes of the show from season three in comparison with the article Let Us Infotain You. In the episode 40 Acres and a Vote it used discursive integration. At the beginning, Andre had a slide playing sad music with images of the Obama family on it. He then goes into a discussion speaking about how Barrack Obama wasn t just important because he was the first black president, but because of he gave a hand in showing African Americans that their votes not only were important, but they counted. There then was a dramatization showing the process African Americans went through and the abuses they experienced just to get to a place that showed their votes meant something. The reason why I believe that this is a good example of the concept of discursive integration because although Black ish is a comedy sitcom, it speaks on real life news situations that are happening currently. In the article Let Us Infotain You the author s states, The blurring between news and entertainment is exemplified by the fact that the National Enquirer s own reputation had been enhanced and begrudgingly acknowledged by members of the mainstream press because of its reporting during the O. • 7. The Effect Of Abundance Of Nutrients On Plant Morphology... All plants rely on nutrients to help them repair damaged cells and grow, each nutrient with its own benefit. For example, selenium increases plant resilience within harsh climates. Plant morphology and growth is especially important for crops that are in high demand such as winter wheat grain which has one of the highest worldwide production rates. The effect of the abundance of nutrients on plantmorphology is further investigated in this study. This study entails winter wheatseeds being placed in treatments of different concentrations of nutrients and observed and measured after two weeks have passed. By keeping the environment constant, the effect of each treatment was measured exclusively. The plants in the treatment without nutrients were noticeable shorter than those in the treatments which contained nutrients. The results found suggest that the concentration of nutrients is not as important so long as nutrients are included in the treatment. Nutrients are an essential resource needed for plants to grow and replenish. They can be divided into two main subgroups macronutrients and micronutrients. Most nutrients are absorbed through the root hairs and can be used to repair tissues as well as run important processes such as photosynthesis (Rush et al. 2016). For example, the nutrient Selenium is known to increase the resilience of plants in harsh environments. In this phase there is no calcium available to bind the myosin to the actin. This is the normal state of the muscle until activated by the excitatory phase. During this second phase, the sarcoplasmic reticulum becomes stimulated. This releases calcium ions and binds with troponin. This is a protein that is strung along the actinfilaments. Tropomyosin runs along the actin filaments. The actin is pulled closer to the sarcomere. The contraction phase is when it gets interesting. • 18. Music Can Affect Human Behavior Music can affect human behaviour and plays an important role in our lives from infancy to maturity, evoking a variety of emotions and communicating messages about what is currently happening or about to happen. People use knowledge of the world and their scripts and schemas as a method of organizing the complex sets of information being input into memory. Schemas use prior learned general knowledge about an event, a person, or a situation to provide cues of what to expect in novel scenarios. Since scripts and schemas are developed from the experiences that an individual undergoes, it makes sense that children would have fewer scripts and schemas in place. Thus, adding a musical cue may help in comprehension and retention of information. One reason that music likely enhances recall is that music may allow separate features of separate events to become bound into one grouping as it passes from sensory to working memory. However, the effect of music on the facilitation of cognitive comprehension in young children in recalling novel information from working memory by manner of this binding of information is relatively unstudied. Music can be used to alter mood and facilitate positive interactions and cognitive functioning (Gold, Frank, Bogert Brattico, 2013) as music acts as an auditory cue to the spatial pathways in the brain and the motor cortex. As such, it may allow for faster information processing and comprehension (Fagen et al., 1997). Pleasant sounding music has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On the opposing side, critics of the war argue that the Bush administration used the 9/11 terrorist attack and the threat of WMDs to justify waging an illegal war against Iraqin order to extract Iraqi oil to fund the military industrial complex, to secure Israel, and to finish the job of deposing Saddam. While these explanations for the invasion have some merit, they are problematic because they fail to capture the extent of the administration s actual ambitions. An analysis of how individuals on Bush s administration, such as Paul Wolfowitz and Condoleezza Rice, viewed the world reveals that the invasion of Iraq was intended to demonstrate the effectiveness of and necessity for preemptive action, overthrow Saddam, and transform the Middle East. However, what was perceived to be a quick and easy operation to stabilize the Middle East and secure America s interest backfired and turned Iraq into a safe haven for terrorists. One reason the Bush administration decided to invade Iraq was to set a precedent for the US to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Using characterization, Sophocles compares the loyalties of Antigone and Creon, providing the gods with the chorus support to show the views of objective observers and emphasize the proper devotion. Antigone, the headstrong heroine, proves that honoring the gods results in a more favorable fate. Right from the start, Antigone makes her opinions clear: the gods wishes are more important than mortal laws. Creon, the new ruler of Thebes, exemplifies the consequences of allegiance to the state, ultimately falling from grace. Aristotle s Poetics define Creon as a tragic hero: Firstly, he is high born. And of course Creon s hamartia is his dedication to the state: whomsoever the city may appoint, that man must be obeyed, in little things and great, in just things and unjust (107). According to Weber, rationalization refers to the process by which modern society has increasingly become concerned with efficiency, predictability, calculability, and control (Weber 2009). This leads to behaviors that are guided by reason and practicality. In the film Food, Inc. (2008), the owners of the meatcompanies wanted to produce their products in a rational manor. The film portrays the side of the foodindustry that the companies do not want the consumers to see. Although this rationalization may seem to be positive, there are many negative effects. One example of food production in the film is the production of chickens. When interviewing the owners of the chicken farms, they were extremely restricted on what they could say and show. The farmers took out thousands of dollars in loans to be able to start their farms. The farmers do not earn enough to pay off their loans, so they are in a constant debt. On top of this, the farmers are required by the corporations to constantly update their equipment. If they do not update the equipment, then they will lose their contracts. This further traps them in a cycle of debt and dependence on the large corporations. If they do anything to go against the corporations, they can easily lose their contract and be replaced. In the 56 stories analyzed, 20 different policy topics were covered. The topic of law, crime, and family issues was covered most with roughly 18% of the coverage followed by fires, weather and natural disasters, and immigration. This graph shows that the Washington Post also had a diverse coverage of policy topics; however, not as diverse as the Los Angeles Times. In the 56 stories analyzed, 14 different policy topics were covered. Not surprisingly, government operations were covered most with 25% of the news coverage. Law, crime, and family issues, health, and international affairs and foreign aid followed this. The two news outlets covered some of the same national stories like former president Jimmy Carter s fight with cancer, the devaluation of Chinese currency, and the American hostage held by ISIS, but much of the coverage throughout the week was different. With 75% more stories on government ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like the coverage of law, crime, and family issues. Both publications had this coverage; however, the Los Angeles Times was dominated by this. Perhaps it is because Los Angeles area has a higher crime rate than Washington D.C. or maybe crime is what the Times readers are longing for. It is difficult to determine what different readers are searching for, but observing the range of policy topics between the publications, it shows their agendas are set differently. For example, the Los Angeles Times has multiple stories about sports and recreation while the Washington Post has none. Both have stories about arts and entertainment and surprisingly to me the Post has more human interest stories than the Los Angeles Times. This is something I am unsure of how to explain other than perhaps a slow news ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Equipment managers play a key role in intercollegiate athletics, but sports information directors are important as well. • 48. Lord Call Samuel Research Paper Throughout the course of the Bible, God has called countless to people to follow His plan for them. Although some remain hesitant at first, it is seemingly impossible to altogether reject God s calling. There are many examples of this in both the Bible and the world today. Samuel was called to serve as prophet, Marywas called to serve as the Mother of God, and my grandfather was called to serve as a deacon in the Catholic Church. God calls everyone to fulfill their vocation, but it takes people different amounts of time to finally respond to that calling. The Lord called Samuel to be the first of Israel s great prophets at time when much of Israel was in a state of disunity. As the people called for a king to control the land, Samuel would serve as the last of the Judges and a link between God and His people. Samuel s mother, Hannah, was originally declared barren, but was granted a son after praying to God begging for a child. Hannah promised God that if she was given a child that the baby would serve the Lord in his life. Thus, Hannah gave Samuel to a priest named Eli (Bible). One night when Samuel was asleep, the Lord called to Samuel. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During Jesus s apostolic life, Mary remained uninvolved as to not interfere with his work. As Catholics, we believe Mary was born free of the original sin called the Immaculate Conception. At the end of Mary s life, she was brought to Heaven with body and soul in the Assumption (Maas). • 49. Chin The Largest Economy At present, China is the largest economy in the world, overtaking the US in January 2015. It is also the world s second largest oil consumer behind the US (Chen 2015) and the world s largest net importer of crude oil (Dunn 2014). Its net importer status was driven by steady economic growth, with rapidly rising Chinese petroleumdemand outpacing production growth (EIA 2014). China is also the fourth largest oil producing country in the world (Refer to Appendix ___). The growth in the developing nation s economy over the past 3 decades was heavily dependent on its low cost advantage compared to those of other countries. During this period of growth, foreign companies flocked to China to set up production facilities and factories to capitalize on this cost advantage. Raw materials are shipped to China, where factory workers build the final products and export them out to various countries (Wassener 2014). However, recently, china s economy has experienced a significant slowdown due to the shift in growth of the nation to rely more on private enterprise and domestic consumption. This shift in economy reduces its demand for industrial raw materials for manufacturing, which translates to a decrease in demand of oil for use in production plants. A survey of China s industrial heartland identified decreases in key areas of new orders, export orders and output prices (Letts 2015). Furthermore, being the world s second largest consumer of oil, this move that China makes will have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
