Native American Beliefs And Beliefs
Native American Religions and Cultures in the Midwest
[Thesis]
Native American religions in the Midwest shaped the way for their tribes to grow their religions
opened up many opportunities to create alliances but also start wars. The culture that was
introduced by their religions help them and help us understand more about the time and place they
were in; The people of these tribes are still affected dearly by these religions so much that they are
still followed till this day.
[History and Story]
The history and lore of the Sioux tribes religion are quite interesting. They had massive birds
called Thunder birds they came down when there was or right before a storm and would swoop
up small children and animals; Or there was the White Buffalo Woman who gave each tribe a
medicine pipe that allowed the medicine man that was the tribe s head religious figure
communicate with spirits for guidance and to find a small glimpse of the future. These are the
things that make the Sioux religion exotic, but understandable with logical reasons for their beliefs.
I m now going to briefly go over Sioux history to help the reader understand

The Great Depression Through The Artist s Eyes
In 1929, the Western industrialized countries succumbed to a bleak period of time known as the
Great Depression. This economic collapse, which persisted for ten long years, was preempted by
the stock market crash on Wall Street, buying on credit, supply and demand along with the Dust
Bowl of the Great Plains. During this economic state of crisis, the unemployment rate had risen
from 3% to 25%, almost 13 million Americans were jobless. Many people could not pay their
rent or mortgages. People were evicted into the world of public assistance and forced to wait in
long breadlines for free food. Suicide reached an all time high. No nation could emerge from the
cauldron of national crisis without profound social and cultural change (Independence Hall
Association). Artwork is an expression of a feeling or idea that an artist portrays. It s an avenue of
communicating a moment in time. This paper will analyze four pieces of artwork representing the
Great Depressionthrough the artist s eyes. Artistic styles will be explored along with discussion of
trade and exchange as depicted from the artwork. Regionalism is an American realist modern art
movement popular during the 1930s. Artists during this art movement shunned the city and the
rapidly developing technological advances, dubbed the Age of Progress, to focus on rural life
instead (Artinthepicture). The Regionalists view was to paint what was around them, what they
know and what they see. During the Great Depression

1.The Analysis There is more public support for marijuana law reform than ever before with new
polls showing more than half the country is in favor of legalizing marijuana. The Drug Policy
Alliance (DPA) believes marijuana should be removed from the criminal justice system and
regulated like alcohol and tobacco.
What s going on? The drug war is responsible for hundreds of billions of wasted taxes dollars and
misallocated government spending, as well as devastating human costs that far outweigh the
damage caused by drugs alone. The United States unrivaled incarceration rate is a constant financial
drain, causing an immeasurable loss in workforce productivity, and puts a strain on scant legal and
law enforcement resources. While the federal government spends, billions trying to reduce the
demand for illegal drugs through prohibition, treatment consistently proves to be a more effective,
cheaper and more humane way to lower the demand for illegal drugs.
Misleading drug education can also weaken youth confidence in law enforcement, parents, and
other adults. Students need drug education that respects their intelligence and gives them

Compare And Contrast The Concepts Of Nationalism And...
HIST 803 Week Three Reading Reflections Two thing stood out to me in this week s readings,
although they are closely intertwined: the concepts of Canadian nationalism and Canadian national
identity. These concepts changed greatly between the three Canadian Prime Ministers tenures, St.
Laurent, Diefenbaker, and Pearson, respectively and how these concepts have continued to change
up to the present day. I have noticed that the majority of this week s readings tend to overlook St.
Laurent s, and his government s, contributions to these two issues for while the longstanding
Liberal government essentially continued MacKenzie King s policies. However they had to do it
in a rapidly Canadaand a rapidly changing world. During St. Laurent s time in office the British
Commonwealth declined in spectacular fashion while the United Statesrise, as an economic,
political, and military superpower was equally spectacular. Canada itself was also changing. The
Second World War had created economic prosperity for the vast majority of Canada s provinces
and the premiers were keen to use their newfound economic independence from Ottawa to create
their own provincial identities and depending on the Premier these identities could be vastly
different and I would say that Maurice Duplessis Quebec... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

With Diefenbaker s decision to cancel the Avro Arrow, the Progressive Conservatives essentially
destroyed Canada s military aircraft industry in favour of purchasing American military equipment.
When it comes to government policies, and how it relates to Canadian nationalism, I equate the
height of Canadian nationalism with Pierre Trudeau s economic and political policies; with the
creation of Petro Canada and enforcing the National Energy Program, and then a decline in
nationalism with the rise of neoliberalism in the late

Asparagus Berries Research Paper
Asparagus berries Title: What to Do with Asparagus Berries Meta description: Don t eat
asparagus berries they re poisonous! But there are a few other things you can do with them.
Find out what you can do with asparagus berries here. Both male and female asparagus plants
produce tiny, attractive flowers, however, it is primarily the female plant which makes the
small, red, berry like seed pods. These seed pods are poisonous to humans and pets, but they
look nice along with the fern like foliage when growing in the garden or added to floral
arrangements. Asparagus Seed Pods Look Like Berries The bright red berries growing on female,

humans and also for dogs and cats, producing an allergic reaction in some individuals. Eating the
berries can cause vomiting and abdominal pain. Raw asparagus shoots are also mildly toxic,
although the toxicity is quickly eliminated by cooking. Allergic response often includes a skin rash,

P1 Describe the travel and tourism component industries and provide examples of domestic,
inbound and outbound organisations within them.
There are three types of tourism which is domestic, inbound and outbound tourism.
Domestic tourism
When a tourist travels around the same country, as they live in. For example when you live in
London and decide to go for a tour in the palace of Westminster, then you are a domestic tourism. A
domestic tourism traveller does not have to book a place to stay because they can go home on the
day they went to visit.
Inbound tourism
Travelling around the UK from another country. The tourist comes from another different country.

Other roads are normal local roads linking to other local places such as Hayes to Uxbridge. This
would be used by some tourists who want to discover local areas and wanted to travel to another
local city or places.
Rail
Network rail operates and owns the national rail network in UK. People or tourists can travel from
different country by trains, such as Euro star which operates UK to France. This shows that you can
travel to some certain countries by train; it is cheaper than other ports and inbound and outbound
tourist would use euro stars. There are city trains such as virgin trains (http://www.virgintrains.co.uk
/) which link London to other major cities such as Manchester and Birmingham; the cost depends
on the destination. This train would be mostly used by domestic tourist. On the other hand, there re
London underground (http://www.tfl.gov.uk/) which operates London to different and larger parts
of London such as Northolt, leisure square, Oxford Street, Marbella arch, Luton, Modern, Croydon
etc. however it can be very busy in some times due to the works times and etc. inbound and
domestic tourists would use the underground because its faster and it s a nice experience to travel
underground trains.

Designing A Carcase Table Using The Appropriate Woodwork...
Carcase Table Investigation
MYP Criteria A: Investigation
Harry Brown
Stuart House Mr. Riddell
Problem Statement
In this task I will design and create a carcase table using the appropriate woodwork skills. To
complete the task, the carcase table will be made out of wood and it will be designed according to
the specifications. First I will sketch and design my carcase table to make sure that it fits the right
specifications. Then I will construct it in the workshop using such machines as, the router, the drop
saw, and the band saw. Once it is constructed, it will be sanded to make sure it is nice and smooth
and it will be varnished with a particular finish. Once the carcase table is constructed and varnished
I will test it to see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many benefits of doing this project. I will learn how to use the different woodwork
tools and machines used to make wooden things like a carcase table. I may also learn about
marketing and how similar things can be produced and sold. I will learn some good life skills and
I will know how to construct wooden object using the different woodwork machines and tools.
To complete the task I will design my carcase table according to the correct specifications and
measurements. Once I have designed my carcase table I will create it in the workshop by first
cutting it out and gluing the appropriate pieces together. Once it is constructed I will sand it and
put a finish on it.
Existing Products
Description: A very modern Carcase table. It is very square and has curved legs. It would suit
someone with a modern life style.
Positives: It is very eye catching, and appeals to the target audience. It enhances the dГ©cor and
would look great in a modern home. The rectangular top of this carcase table would be quite easy
to make.
Negatives: The legs are curved and would be quite hard to make. The legs would all have to be
the exact same in size and volume which would be extremely hard to do. The knob used to pull the
draw in and out is metal, which is not aloud.
Description: An older style carcase table. It has a round top and curved legs.

Compare And Contrast Hamilton And Jefferson
In the years following the Revolutionary War, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson had a
number of conflicting philosophies on how best to run the young nation. Most important of all was
determining the role and responsibilities of the federal government. Hamilton, a Federalist, was an
advocate of a strong national government controlled by the wealthy with the power to tax and
regulate commerce; Jefferson, who grew up on a Virginia plantation, championed states rights and a
laissez faire policy, placing faith in the common people to shape the future of America.
Hamilton was a dedicated proponent of the Bank of the United States, proposing the idea to
President Washington in January of 1791. Under Hamilton s plan, the federal government... Show

Among them were Lyman Beecher and three of his children. Beecher himself was a key
contributor to the Second Great Awakening, leading a series of Calvinist revivals around the time
of the War of 1812. These revivals led to a series of reform movements in the early 19th century,
most notably the temperance movement of the 1830s which aimed to stamp out alcoholic
beverages. Other social contributions from the Beecher family included Catharine Beecher s
efforts towards attaining higher education for women and advocating female careers in teaching,
Harriet Beecher s famous novel Uncle Tom s Cabin which helped expose the evils of slavery, and
Henry Ward Beechers work as an antislavery advocate and preacher before and after the Civil War.
William Lloyd Garrison was one of the fiercest abolitionist figures of his generation. Garrison
launched The Liberator in 1831, a radical weekly antislavery journal, where he called for immediate
and unconditional emancipation of all slaves. In 1833, Garrison united with other abolitionists to
found the American Anti Slavery Society. The Second Great Awakening heavily influenced many
leading abolitionists such as Theodore Dwight Weld, while Garrison used his newsletter to rally

Most Dangerous Cult Research Paper
Did you know that America is home to come of the most dangerous cults in history? Cults began in
America as early as the 1930s, and they still exist today! By definition, a cult is any group which
employs mind control and deceptive recruiting techniques (How Cults Work). Although people may
know what a cult it, they may not know how potentially dangerous a cult is.
Cults can be evil and mind controlling. They can also be extremely dangerous. According to
Rick Ross, an expert consultant and intervention specialist, there are several signs of a
potentially unsafe group or leader. These signs include: absolute authoritarianism without
meaningful accountability; there is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always
wrong in leaving, negative or even evil; followers can never be good enough; and the group or
leader is the exclusive means of knowing the truth or receiving validation, no other process or
discovery is really acceptable or credible. Cult leaders use mind control to control their group. This
could be dangerous or life threatening. Leaders are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Burham House Sociology
Monterey House Located on the grounds of Roanoke College s campus is the reportedly haunted
house known as Monterey. This house was built in 1853 by the Huff family, over time passed
through many different owners, and in 2002 was officially bought by Roanoke College.
Throughout the history of the house several of the occupants are known to have died within the
premises of the property, thus contributing to it s reputation of being haunted. In our investigation
of the Monterey house we spent two nights in the house gathering various types of data to aid us in
our attempt to discover what theoryof haunting is consistent with the experiences within the house.
The experiences within the house can be explained through several different theories... Show more

For example, the numerous dowsing hits found in the house can be attributed to the priming or
bias of the people conducting the dowsing sweeps. They might be unaware of the priming and
the bias caused by following or trying to repeat the results of another. In addition to the dowsing
hits, the psychological theory of explanation is also supported by the reports of hearing voices
that are not actually there. This can be attributed to a lack of sleep causing hallucinations, fueled
by a self fulfilling prophecy, like purposefully looking for a specific piece of evidence in your
data until you find it, and can even be attributed to hearing damage or impairment due to health
problems or old age. Another possible explanation for the hauntings can be seen with deja vu, or
the experiencing of intense familiarity with something in the present environment that leads you
to believe you have experienced it before. An exemplification of this theory can be seen when
Robin experienced feelings of familiarity while listening to a song during one of the vigils, but
could not place where she had heard it before. This feeling of familiarity is derived by the brain s
inability to recall the information related to the potential memory, and is sometimes referred to as
the tip of the tongue phenomena. Overall, the data collected from Monterey is mostly explained by

Brand Cannibalization
BRAND CANNIBALIZATION: EAT OR BE EATEN
With increasing commoditization of brands, differentiation is hard to come in every industry.
Consumers are now flooded with options, single company having several brands in same product
category. Positioning, targeting, segmenting can serve as strategies no more. Rather it is the basic
hygiene which any company needs to follow if it needs to sustain in the race for market share.
So, what should a marketer adopt as a strategy? There are unconventional approaches followed by
Multinationals to address the goal of increasing their market share. With consumer demand for
innovation increasing, brand loyalty being a privilege of few companies and E commerce providing
an instant comparison amongst ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While there are two school of thoughts that argue about the same, I choose to adhere to
diplomacy. As it is true for every strategy, in implementation of it lies the crux. There are
examples of brands which faltered in the implementation and ended up cannibalizing for no gain
or for a loss of revenue and then there are these who have learnt to effectively deploy it as a
successful tool. If carefully planned, we even may talk about new opportunities that can lead to
increased sales and market share (Proactive Cannibalization). And if a company does not have a
strategic plan for digital transformation someone else will (Passive Cannibalization).
To exemplify my stand on why the only answer is Effective cannibalization we have a look at
some previous decisions. Taking the example of The New York Times, which saw newspaper
sales plunge when they began posting free online versions of their stories on the internet, it would
not be wrong in calling it as inefficient Cannibalization. But in this case, every other newspaper
faced the same situation since if they did not provide such services, the market share of New York
Times would increase, which was then undesirable. So they rushed and joined the league since
Cannibalism hurts if you eat your own toes, but it s better than starving .
On the contrary, a brand that uses their existing brand reputation to leverage a successful
cannibalization campaign is Gillette,

On the original appeal in this case, the Federal Circuit reversed and remanded the district court s
finding of indefiniteness under the premise that a claim is indefinite only when it is not amenable
to construction or insolubly ambiguous. The Supreme Court in Nautilus v. Biosig Instruments Inc.
134 S.Ct. 2120, 2124 (2014) in its decision articulated the standard A patent is invalid for
indefiniteness if its claims, read in light of the specification delineating the patent, and the
prosecution history, fail to inform, with reasonable certainty those skilled in the art about the scope
of the invention.
In light of the new standard set forth by the Supreme Court, the Federal Circuit addressed only the
issue of indefiniteness on remand. The question before the court was whether the district court
erred in holding that the spaced relationship as recited in claim 1, and referring to the spacing

The Effect Of Temperature On Our Cognition
Introduction
When a person describes someone, as being warm one understands it as a person who is friendly
and not as someone who is physically warm. Using temperature as a way to describe a person has
been understood as a metaphor, however studies have revealed that there is a connection between
the association of warmth and feelings of social belonging (Ijzerman et al., 2012).
The belief that our physical world has an influence on our cognition is called the embodiment
theory (Chen, Poon Dewell, 2014). In this theory it is believed that our surroundings shape of
psychological feelings (Chen et al., 2014). Hence, why we use temperature as a way to expressing

Visual persuasion and propaganda in mass media: example of Putin s covers in Time magazine
As we have seen throughout the course visual communication techniques play significant role in
our life since it touches upon almost every sphere starting from social aspects to political ones.
These techniques are not important per se but rather there is a particular purpose they seek. One of
these purposes is persuasion. According to Lester (p. 77): communication is fundamentally and
essentially a matter of persuasion, attitude change, behavior modification, and socialization through
the transmission of information . Images are an essential part of the visual persuasion, which
modern mass media incorporates. As we have observed in our readings this visual persuasion can
take different forms in order to be the most effective and to achieve its goal. Lester states that: most
information, whether factual or not, is communicated through the mass media. More and more that
information relies on the emotional appeal inherent in visual presentations (ibid). Moreover:
pictures have always been the surest way of conveying an idea (ibid). One of the brightest examples
is the covers of different newspapers and journals that not only demonstrate the certain attitude and

The Importance of International Commercial Arbitration Essay
Introduction
International commercial arbitration is one of the most important legal institutions in international
private law. This conclusion follows from the fact that the nature of arbitration depends largely on
autonomy of the parties, who choose arbitration procedure as the procedure in which the dispute
will be settled; place where the arbitration is to be held; arbitral tribunal etc. Probably the most
important and considerable expression of the autonomy is the right to choose the law, which is to

The subject of the research is the law applicable in international commercial arbitration. The paper
will first deal with the law applicable to arbitration agreement. Secondly, the question of
determination of law applicable to the merits of the dispute will be brought up including the case
when the intention of the parties can be found and the situation when there is absence of the choice
of law made by the parties. The significance of the selected research topic can be explained by the
fact that international commercial arbitral proceedings is widely used by the parties of commercial
transactions as the effective method of dispute settlement and the issue of applicable law to the
merits of the dispute is one of the main which the arbitral tribunal has to decide.
Conclusion
The nature of international commercial arbitration has a close connection to the party autonomy,
which is also expressed in the right of the parties to choose the law that is to be applied by the
arbitrators to the dispute between them. The same right is given to the parties concerning the
arbitration agreement.
Firstly, the choice of law applicable to the substance of the dispute which the parties have made
can be either express or implied and if such choice took place the arbitrators have to apply it.
Without any indications concerning choice of applicable law, an arbitral tribunal has to determine
such law through the searching of proper

The Pros And Cons Of Altruism
Imagine yourself stumbling upon a horrendous scene. A young woman is seen sprawled on the
ground, her face is bloodied and bruised, and her right leg is twisted at a grotesque angle, evidently
broken. What would you do? Obviously, you help. But why would you help? Undoubtedly, you
wanted to alleviate her distress. But why? Helping others in need and having the urge of wanting to
help somebody who is in need is something that happens at least once in everybody s life. It is a
common thing that even animals help one another mutually, though they expect to gain something
in return. But in some circumstances, helping somebody is not connected to receiving immediate
benefits or these are considered non existent. This prosocial behaviour has caught... Show more

Numeral studies have shown how individuals would help a family member, relative, or someone
they can mirror themselves with, rather than somebody that they have no relation to or does not
have a connection with. (Rushton, 1991) It is fathomable how helping a family, relative or
somebody we are more attached to is a normal reaction. But it is incomprehensible to explain when
humans show compassion towards complete strangers. This altruistic behaviour seemingly suggests
that true altruism could undeniably exist.
Empathy Altruism Model argues that altruism does exist and explains why people help others
even though they are not related. The Empathy Altruism Model, is established on the idea that
emotional response of empathy is produced when an individual is seen to be in need. It could be
argued that the individual feels empathy for the other person who is in need, and being able to
feel and take into consideration of another s feelings, directs the helping behaviour at relieving the
person who is in need and therefore altruism is produced by altruistic reasons . (Cialdini, Brown,

Richard Linklater s Boyhood Was A Super Hit American...
Paper Two: Boyhood Director and producer, Richard Linklater s Boyhood was a super hit American
drama film that was released in the United States in July 11, 2014. Boyhood, to this date is still one
of my most favorite movies. It is taken place over a course of ten to eleven years (2002 2013). It is
about a boynamed Mason Evans Jr. who lives with his older sister Samantha Evans, and his
single mother Olivia Evans. Mason s father, Mason Evans Sr. had great impact to Mason Jr.
throughout his childhood. What s spectacular about this movie is that the same actors and
actresses were used all throughout the time span. Mason grew up how many ordinary boys do
with divorced parents. His mother would get into relationships with other men, but never choose
to go back with Mason s father. The family moves to Houston and his father would sometimes
come visit and take him and his sister out to places. It would be easier for Mason if his father
and mother got back together which unfortunately doesn t happen. You could say that Mason
struggles with life as he grows up. He goes through family problems, financial problems, peer
pressure, relationship problems, breakups, etc. Now, many teenage boys experience at least one of
these problems. That s just life. Mason doesn t have to go through too much financial problems,
just probably one main one every family goes through financial problems once in a while. Mason
has family problems because his parents are divorced and his mother

Filial Piety In A Devoted Son
Filial Piety in A Devoted Son A Devoted Son is the story of Rakesh, a young Indian man and the
relationship with his family. He receives top honors at school, accolades from his American and
Indian comrades, rises to the director of the local hospital, and becomes the richest doctor in his
town. Critics argue this is Desai s comment about perfect Indian society, where adherence to filial
piety, respecting one s parents, elders, and ancestors, is paramount (Crane). Rakesh s view of it
leads to a breakdown in his relationship with his father. The father feels neglected by his family
because they no longer respect his wishes. To Rakesh, belief in protecting his family from the
ills of society, despite their temptation, proves his dedication to family (Desai). Filial piety in the
abstract is a good standard to live by, but it could lead to destruction because adhering to it
removes emotions. In the beginning, the relationship between Rakesh and his parents was an
admirable one. Rakesh considers his parents feelings prior to making major decisions. From
choosing a wife to becoming the primary caretaker to his father after his mother s death, Rakesh s
sole desire seems to make his parents proud. Though the author does not dwell on the concept of
filial piety regarding the mother, she shows her dedication to the family at the expense of her health.
The mother s death marks a change in the family. The old father very quickly went to pieces,
(Desai) and could not adjust

Tim Burton Analysis Essay
Tim Burton Analysis
Tim Burton is a very skilled director. His first job was with Disney but he was more into the
dark stories, his first project was Vincent(1982) . He likes to combine child friendly stories and
dark/mysterious stories/movies. He had many influences like Dr.Suess, Edgar Allan Poe,
Vincent Price, Grimm s fairy tales, and Roald Dahl. Burton is great at using Cinematic
Techniques. He makes the movies pull at the viewer s emotions, either in a happy, sad, or scary
way by using framing, lighting, camera angles, music/sound, and editing. Tim Burton uses
framing a lot to either show the detailed features of a person s face or to show their expression.
During Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he did a close up on Willy Wonka s face during one
of his flashbacks to show that he was pained to think of his bad childhood. He also uses a close up
shot on Willy Wonka at the beginning to show how WILLY wonka looks. In the beginning of
Edward Scissorhands, Burton used a close up shot on Edward s face to show all of his scars from
his scissorhands. Tim Burton also uses on Edwards scissorhands to show how sharp and shiny they

Radical Feminist Thought, I argue that such violence is normalized through the lack of current
public resistance to this crime and contends that women themselves begin to see this type of
treatment as acceptable. Structurally, this paper will begin by providing a concise summary of the
values of Radical feminismto give clarification on the standpoint of this feminist position in

changes impacting the responses to domestic violence issues. Our popular understanding and legal
approach to domestic violence has shifted dramatically throughout the years. There has been a shift
from the private response, where domestic violence was considered a product of relationship
dysfunction, to a fully public campaign in which the state takes the lead in combating domestic
violence through arrest and prosecution of abusers. This shift, I have argued, reflects a radical
feminist understanding of domestic violence as patriarchal force and was informed by earlier

In the first case, Dr. William seems comfortable and ends up prescribing the best medical
prescription for Johnny. This is attributable to the fact that he shares an interest about horses with
Becki, who is Johnny s mother. In addition to the family being Caucasian, they also seem to have
a good insurance, which makes the doctor believe that they will be able to afford effective
treatment for their child. This makes him prescribe CPAP for Johnny s obstructive sleep apnea
(OSA), a nonsurgical treatment for sleep apnea, which will require up to a month of follow up.
However, Dr. William seems to make an assumption about the origin of the Waleed family, who are
Sudanese, but he thinks they are African American. This caused him to overlook the stress, which
the Waleeds may have gone through in Sudan before migrating to the US, thereby turning them
away because they do not have insurance. This behavior will have a far reaching ultimate health
outcome on the Waleed s child. In addition, he seemed to not totally understand the culture of
Vietnamese, which made him totally do the contrary of the Phan s family expectations (Core

Titanic Case Analysis
Titanic Case Analysis
Estate of Hans Jensen vs. The White Star Line
Facts:
The White Star Line was owner of the Titanic, which was the largest and most luxurious ship in the
world at the time. On April 10th, 1912, the Titanic left from Southampton, England with 2,227
passengers aboard bound for New York City. On April 14th, the ship struck an iceberg off the coast
of Newfoundland and sank about 2 ВЅ hours later. Passengers, mostly women and children, were
loaded into lifeboats, however only 705 passengers survived as many lifeboats left partially full.
Hans Peder Jensen and his fiancГ© Carla Christine Jensen were passengers from Denmark on the

The first element of negligence is duty of care. According to the plaintiff, White Star Line, which
owns and operates Titanic, owes a duty of care to all of the passengers on the ship. All of the
passengers relied upon White Star Line to take them to New York safely. Therefore, the crew on
Titanic owed duty of care to not only provide food and comfort, but more importantly safety to the
passengers. Breach of duty occurs when defendant s action has created risk of harm to others. In
this case, the plaintiff believes that the crew of the Titanic behaved in unreasonable manner in
many ways. The actions of the crew members resulted in the Titanic struck a large iceberg and
eventually sank causing large casualties, so the duty of care was breached.
Whether the breach of duty has caused the plaintiff s injury is the third element of negligence.
Requirements for causation are causation in fact and proximate cause. Causation in fact is
determined by the but for test, which means if it was not for the defendant s breach of duty, harm
or injury would not have occurred. Proximate cause is when the connection between the action
(breach of duty) and the injury is strong enough to impose liability. Another issue that needs to be
considered is foreseeability because the defendant s action must have created a foreseeable risk of
injury. In this case, the crew of Titanic was navigating the ship during the night at high rate of
speed in water with

Escalation Of Conflict
The escalation of conflict is not the only problem the increased number of private military
contractors bring. These contractors have a different object and priority than the stationed troops
in conflicts. The contractor s number one priority is protecting their asset, as the private
corporations know that if the important figure they are assigned to protect gets captured or killed,
it would be devastating for the business and most likely they would lose the funding the
government provides. Since the priority of the contractors is to keep the asset safe, they will often
be very aggressive, securing perimeters and stopping any vehicles that get too close. There has been

presumable Irish and Scottish contractors shooting randomly at Iraqi civilians. Not only does this

through their rampant drug usage and careless trigger discipline, which is the reality of the
contractors behavior. These contractors often operate out the judicial system, making them above

exemptions create a lack of responsibility and accountability and often can result to impunity.

Can Dogs Make You Happier

How can Dogs Make You Happier, or is it healthier? That is the first difference between a media

differences are put into place that infers different conclusions. In reading the scientific article, the
reader is always aware of strong correlation but is also cognizant that proof of dogs improving
human health is not available. In reading the media article it is inferred that the theory has been

The first disclaimer is the difference in the title and the first sentence. The title How a Dog s Life
can Make you Happier is starkly contrasted to the first sentence which refers to dogs improving
health. Personally, health and happiness are related but very different. The media article is not all
bad. Time is taken to include that walking the dogs may contribute to the increased health of the
owner. However, it implies that increased health will always come. After reading the scientific
article it is known that fact is not true. In fact owning a dog can cause issues for the disabled
creating unwanted social situations, this can affect their health. On a different note, I do believe
that the article, generally speaking, does not fail in relating to the scientific article. As mentioned
earlier it does imply correlation is not causation, which is important. Even if the rest of the article
distracts from that point, the majority of the article points towards the idea that dogs do help with
health. The information picked from the science article reveals that health can be related to owning
a dog. Quotations from scientists are used to give it merit. In reality what would give this article its
merit is cited scientific reports and mentioning the limitations of individual statements in ways that
the scientific article succeeds. Such as indicating

Lastly, I will discuss If I were in Judie s position what goals, values, and beliefs would assist me in
my decision to leave or stay at this job and the consequences that could arise from my choices.
In this case study, it is apparent that Judie has high values as a nurse. Her goal has clearly been

situation where her values are being compromised and she has a big decision to make.
My own personal values regarding this case would be similar to Judies. I feel that with being at the

Vega Bogeda s employee was probably acting outside the scope of his employment when he posted
the video of Underwood on YouTube.
An employer is liable for the actions of his employee unless they fall outside the scope of
employment. Williams v. Community Drive In Theater, Inc., 520 P.2d 1296, [p. 1297] (Kan.
1974). To fall inside the scope, the employee s actions must (1) arise naturally from the course of
their jobs and (2) intend to further employer s interest and not done for personal reasons.
Daugherty v. Allee s Sports BarGrill, 260 S.W.3d 869, [p. 873] (Mo. Ct. App. 2008).
Three cases are relevant to understanding this rule. In Williams, the court found a drive in liable for
an employee accidentally shooting a customer. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The employee filmed Underwood within the scope of his employment, but posting was outside the
scope. The plaintiff alleges invasion of privacy and damage to reputation, but the harms of both
claims come from the act of sharing the video with others. Had the employee not shared the video,
the plaintiff probably would have no case for damage to her reputation as the events would have
stayed between the two parties. Instead, he posted the video. Posting, rather than filming, caused
the plaintiff harm.
It is clear the employee acted within the scope while filming. As a service worker who often closes
the store, an employee should have experience with difficult customers late at night. As such, the
situation fell within the normal course of his duties. The worker s main goal was not a personal
motive, but to close the store. He thought filming the plaintiff would incentive her to leave.
Posting falls outside the scope of employment for a few reasons. First, he posted the video to his
personal account for the purposes of entertaining online viewers. He also knew that Vega did not
approve of him being on YouTube during work hours, but did so anyway. Finally, Vega noted
embarrassing customers did not benefit the business, but might ease personal annoyances to the
worker, meaning the video helped the posting employee to the detriment his employer.
There are a couple of counterarguments to this interpretation. First, using Daugherty, one might

Essay about 1776 Book Review
1776, Book Review It was a good year for a revolution, 1776. But it didn t start off quite as well
as the colonists would have liked. When George Washington agreed to take command of the
American forces in 1775, he probably didn t realize what he was truly getting himself into.
Washington took command of an army made up of old men and young boys that had either come
from their farms or the street. The army was short on weapons and gunpowder, lacked uniforms,
and was racked by disease and drunkenness. Washington understood that what lies ahead would be
difficult, considering he would be facing the most powerful country in world. But he probably didn
t expect his worst problems to come from his own army, which was an undisciplined and... Show

The battle was won, despite insufficient arms and ammunition. It would be one of the few
military victories Washington would experience that year. The news got back to England, and
King George III was angered when he heard the outcome of Boston. He spoke before Parliament
and ordered that the rebels were to be stopped. The British, devastated by the defeat, returned
later in the year, this time with more reinforcements and the help of the Hessians. New York City
was now the new battleground. The battles and conflicts that lie ahead once again reminded
Washington of what kind of army he had. The Battle of New York would soon prove to be a
disaster. It was Washington s first command on a large scale battle. He and his general officers had
not only failed, but they looked like fools from the British point of view. After the battle, troops
began to run away in fear. Even Washington s closest friend, Joseph Reed, began plotting behind his
back. Washington suffered another bitter defeat at Fort Washington, N.Y. The colonists were
intimidated, and surrendered Fort Washington. It was a severe blow to the colonists, 2000 were
taken prisoner, 59 killed, 146 cannons lost to the British and Hessians in a matter of hours. It was a
humiliating blow. During one particularly disastrous skirmish with the British, Washington saw his
own troops fleeing from the enemy, and they were refusing to obey orders. Washington threw his
hat on the ground in disgust. And

Burning The American Flag Persuasive Speech
What do you see when you think of the American flag?Did you automatically see the stars and

Burning, of course, is the only way that a flag can be thrown out (in the trash). If you read the
Constitution, nowhere does it talk about/say that burning the flag for any other reason, such as
political disagreement, is illegal. The same goes for the Bill of Rights. In today s country loving
climate, there are people who want to see flag burning prohibited by an (agreeing with, or related
to, the Constitution) Change. But many people believe that burning the flag as an example of
disagreement is covered by our First Amendment Freedom of Speech. Former United States
Senator and space traveler John Glenn made the following statement before the Senate (related to
judges and the court system) Committee: Anybody burning the flag in protest is clearly saying
something. They are making a statement by their body language, and what they are doing makes a
statement that maybe speaks far, far louder than the words they may be willing to total on such an

Case Study for Cognitive Behavior Therapy
The main theory that has largely influenced my clinical work at my current practicum site is
cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). CBT asserts it is an individual s thoughts and behaviors that
directs the individual, so in this case my job would be to help the my client (individual) to find his
or her thought that is driving his or her action(s). CBT is a fine dance; it may seem simple, identify
the thought and replace the thought with a healthier thought. CBT is quite contrary to being
simple, the techniques and timing is a fine juggling and balance act. To elaborate further, after a
client has identified his or her thought that has been driving his or her action, they would need to
restructure certain things in the their life that will... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Thanksgiving Reflection Paper
In order to understand tradition one has to fully immerse themselves into a situation where tradition
is taking place. Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity to explore what it means to celebrate, the
holiday is an American holiday only and is celebrated in a multitude of different ways with an
endless amount of traditional flare that changes from familyto family. I have many biases as to what
the Thanksgivingholiday looks like. Political rants, family members fighting over things from the
past, children running around creating chaos. I chose my family to observe because I wanted to
gain somewhat of an outsider perspective on what it was like to be around my family at the
holidays. Obviously I have been going to Thanksgiving with these same people my whole life
but I wanted to be able to look at the gathering in a different way and understand in a more
significant way why the way my family celebrates may be different from how I ve seen other
people s families celebrate.
As I step toward the house that I have known my entire life I find myself inspecting every inch of
the outer areas. The pile of crunchy, dull colored leaves that had been pushed to a corner as if not
to interfere with the delicately arranged garden that surrounded the lands perimeter just along the
sidewalk. The flowers in the surrounding garden have all died and are merely brown branches
standing tall and spiked awaiting the spring season. The entryway walls are consumed with long
weaving branches all

George Orwell s Use Of Language In Animal Farm
Thesis: In George Orwell s Animal Farm, the language Orwell uses serves in favor of the
occupants of Animal Farm but gradually transforms into the bane of their existences which creates
a mood of confusion, illustrating the psychological wreck amoung the masses in the Russian
Revolution for the readers. At the start of the Revolution, Old Major shares his original ideas
during his speech. Speaking to the animals, he concludes, All the habits of Man are evil. And,
above all, no animal must never tyrannise over his own kind. (31) Old Major implies that the worst
habit of man is their power hungry nature, so he declares these vows to separate themselves from
mankind. He gives the animals the feeling of empowerment, giving them the idea that... Show more

revolution against humans, the animals lives would improve and they would have much better
living conditions, setting moods of hope and determination. Eventually, rations are mentioned
again, but in a completely light. In the midst of being overworked, Squealer explains to the

Squealer emphasizes how the farm s production rates have skyrocketed compared to when Mr.

Scapegoat Research Paper
A scapegoat is someone or something that receives all the blame for when something goes
wrong. Scapegoats have been humanity s way of pointing the finger and ignoring any
wrongdoing that may have led to a failure. No one ever wants to take responsibility when a
failure occurs, but there s always someone around to take the glory if success is achieved.
Historically speaking, scapegoats were more of a reason people used to do bad things. Hitler,
for instance, used the Jewish religion and people who practiced it in his country as his
scapegoat for trying to achieve domination. No one wants to gain the responsibility and criticism
that comes with failure, but appointing a scapegoat seems to be the easy way of dealing with it.
In ancient societies, scapegoats were very popular and there were even specific animals and
people who would be sacrificed if something went wrong. I think that was done more as part of
religious practice, but the idea of a scapegoat taking the blamestill stands. The people would most
likely have been criminals or problematic people in the society and who would easily be accepted
as a scapegoat for any failures experienced. As time continued, scapegoats were not as... Show more

general public likes, but nothing besides harsh words and what has been done wrong is

Essay about God Is Not Great
In his book God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, Christopher Hitchens dissects and
criticizes the various claims of religions and the tragic events that have been caused by various
religions. The title of the book sums up the arguments of Hitchens in this book in the fact that he
makes many arguments of why religionpoisons everything. The majority of the chapters in this
book discuss why he believes religion to be a manmade notion that has led to more trouble than
anything else in the world. Most of his focus is on the three Abrahamic religions of Christianity,
Islam, and Judaism but he does fit in criticism of other religions as well. The topics he chooses to
discuss range from the sketchy origins of Mormonism to the... Show more content on

Christopher Hitchens makes the argument of the nonexistence of God by using the examples
of the faults of religion then he concludes his book with a chapter on a need for the abolishment
of religion to study human kind without its presence. Hitchens arguments begin strongly at the
start of chapter two. The themes of this chapter and that of chapter four deal with how religion
is effective at ending lives. The discussion in the second chapter revolves around the political
situation in which violent outbreaks have been caused by religious people. A good number of
pages in this section deal with a response to a question he was given. The question in Hitchens s
words is I was to imagine myself in a strange city as the evening was coming on. Toward me I
was to imagine that I saw a large group of men approaching. Now would I feel safer, or less safe,
if I was to learn that they were just coming from a prayer meeting? (18). The answer from
Hitchens is that he would be scared and the reason he gives is due to his experiences from various
places that have had struggles with politics that stem from religious causes. His view on these
conflicts leads him many times to the statement that religion poisons everything (22). Chapter four
talks of another way religion ends life in the form of the risks they take on individual health. The
first example he uses is that of polio vaccine. In Nigeria, the

Comparing Plato s Theaetetus, The Dialog Between Socrates...
Knowledge Defined as Justified True Belief
In Plato s Theaetetus, the dialog between Socrates and his student, Theaetetus, sets up the argument
that knowledge is true belief that is adequately justified. Although there are many examples that
prove Plato s suggestion, people such as Edmund Gettier have questioned and disproved the notion
of knowledge as justified true belief. In response to Gettier s findings, many have tried to modify
or find an alternative to the Justified True Belief model in search for the true definition of
knowledge. In this paper, I will outline and discuss Plato s Justified True Belief argument, outline
and discuss Gettier s response to Plato s argument, and lastly, present and analyze four solutions to
the Gettier problems.
1. Plato s Justified True Belief
In Plato s Theaetetus, Socrates starts his discussion by asking Theaetetus to define the word
knowledge. In response to Socrates question, Theaetetus responds by saying, geometry...cobblery,
and other craftsmen s arts...are nothing else but knowledge (Plato, 2). Though true, Plato is not
satisfied with Theaetetus definition of knowledge because it fails to address the core meaning of
the word. Plato is interested in understanding the definition of knowledge through conceptual
analysis understanding the minimum requirements for one to have knowledge, and avoiding
circularity in definitions. In order to define knowledge through conceptual analysis, Socrates and
Plato outline the argument as

Improving Student s Creativity And Learning
Introduction
Over the last decade, technology initiatives have been passed, and schools are trying to find ways
to accomplish those goals. At the same time, teachers are not being educated in the standards of
technology use, and they are using the tools incorrectly. As the demand for digitizing schools
increases, the request for technology coaches is growing as well to help fix the issues teachers are
experiencing. In the following scenarios, each teacher experience problems using technology
ethically and legally in their classroom.

Scenario #2
In this scenario, Mary is rewarding her students before winter break with the movie Finding Nemo.
Before watching the movie in class, she sent home permission forms for parent s approval;
however, two students did not return the form. In this situation, the technology use is not based on
the ISTE t standards because she is rewarded and preoccupying the students to get work done.
Under these circumstances, she is violating a portion of the copyright law for movies in the
classroom which dictates the movie must be related to a face to face teacher activity and legally
obtained by the teacher (Frieden, n.d.). Also, the teacher must be present in the classroom at all
times throughout the movie (Frieden, n.d.). Mary accomplishes the latter of the two components in
the law; however, she is playing the movie as a reward and not a teaching activity. I would
implement ISTE C standard 2.3 to create a meaningful and relevant lesson for her students. Mary
could have the students compare and contrast Nemo and his dad s adventures utilizing the Common
Core English Language Arts Standard (CCSS.ELA) for Reading: Literature 1.9. Also, After the
students compare Nemo and his father s adventures, the students will create a visual representation
to clarify their thoughts which promote CCSS.ELA for Speaking and Listening 1.5 standard.
Furthermore, Mary is playing a movie which the two students parents did not consent to and

  • 3. The Great Depression Through The Artist s Eyes In 1929, the Western industrialized countries succumbed to a bleak period of time known as the Great Depression. This economic collapse, which persisted for ten long years, was preempted by the stock market crash on Wall Street, buying on credit, supply and demand along with the Dust Bowl of the Great Plains. During this economic state of crisis, the unemployment rate had risen from 3% to 25%, almost 13 million Americans were jobless. Many people could not pay their rent or mortgages. People were evicted into the world of public assistance and forced to wait in long breadlines for free food. Suicide reached an all time high. No nation could emerge from the cauldron of national crisis without profound social and cultural change (Independence Hall Association). Artwork is an expression of a feeling or idea that an artist portrays. It s an avenue of communicating a moment in time. This paper will analyze four pieces of artwork representing the Great Depressionthrough the artist s eyes. Artistic styles will be explored along with discussion of trade and exchange as depicted from the artwork. Regionalism is an American realist modern art movement popular during the 1930s. Artists during this art movement shunned the city and the rapidly developing technological advances, dubbed the Age of Progress, to focus on rural life instead (Artinthepicture). The Regionalists view was to paint what was around them, what they know and what they see. During the Great Depression ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Analysis3 2. The Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) believes marijuana should be removed from the criminal justice system and regulated like alcohol and tobacco. What s going on? The drug war is responsible for hundreds of billions of wasted taxes dollars and misallocated government spending, as well as devastating human costs that far outweigh the damage caused by drugs alone. The United States unrivaled incarceration rate is a constant financial drain, causing an immeasurable loss in workforce productivity, and puts a strain on scant legal and law enforcement resources. While the federal government spends, billions trying to reduce the demand for illegal drugs through prohibition, treatment consistently proves to be a more effective, cheaper and more humane way to lower the demand for illegal drugs. Misleading drug education can also weaken youth confidence in law enforcement, parents, and other adults. Students need drug education that respects their intelligence and gives them ... HIST 803 Week Three Reading Reflections Two thing stood out to me in this week s readings, although they are closely intertwined: the concepts of Canadian nationalism and Canadian national identity. These concepts changed greatly between the three Canadian Prime Ministers tenures, St. Laurent, Diefenbaker, and Pearson, respectively and how these concepts have continued to change up to the present day. I have noticed that the majority of this week s readings tend to overlook St. Laurent s, and his government s, contributions to these two issues for while the longstanding Liberal government essentially continued MacKenzie King s policies. However they had to do it in a rapidly Canadaand a rapidly changing world. During St. Laurent s time in office the British Commonwealth declined in spectacular fashion while the United Statesrise, as an economic, political, and military superpower was equally spectacular. Canada itself was also changing. The Second World War had created economic prosperity for the vast majority of Canada s provinces and the premiers were keen to use their newfound economic independence from Ottawa to create their own provincial identities and depending on the Premier these identities could be vastly different and I would say that Maurice Duplessis Quebec... Compare And Contrast Hamilton And Jefferson In the years following the Revolutionary War, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson had a number of conflicting philosophies on how best to run the young nation. Most important of all was determining the role and responsibilities of the federal government. Hamilton, a Federalist, was an advocate of a strong national government controlled by the wealthy with the power to tax and regulate commerce; Jefferson, who grew up on a Virginia plantation, championed states rights and a laissez faire policy, placing faith in the common people to shape the future of America. By definition, a cult is any group which employs mind control and deceptive recruiting techniques (How Cults Work). Although people may know what a cult it, they may not know how potentially dangerous a cult is. Cults can be evil and mind controlling. They can also be extremely dangerous. According to Rick Ross, an expert consultant and intervention specialist, there are several signs of a potentially unsafe group or leader. These signs include: absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability; there is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even evil; followers can never be good enough; and the group or leader is the exclusive means of knowing the truth or receiving validation, no other process or discovery is really acceptable or credible. • 12. Burham House Sociology Monterey House Located on the grounds of Roanoke College s campus is the reportedly haunted house known as Monterey. This house was built in 1853 by the Huff family, over time passed through many different owners, and in 2002 was officially bought by Roanoke College. Throughout the history of the house several of the occupants are known to have died within the premises of the property, thus contributing to it s reputation of being haunted. In our investigation of the Monterey house we spent two nights in the house gathering various types of data to aid us in our attempt to discover what theoryof haunting is consistent with the experiences within the house. The experiences within the house can be explained through several different theories... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the numerous dowsing hits found in the house can be attributed to the priming or bias of the people conducting the dowsing sweeps. They might be unaware of the priming and the bias caused by following or trying to repeat the results of another. In addition to the dowsing hits, the psychological theory of explanation is also supported by the reports of hearing voices that are not actually there. This can be attributed to a lack of sleep causing hallucinations, fueled by a self fulfilling prophecy, like purposefully looking for a specific piece of evidence in your data until you find it, and can even be attributed to hearing damage or impairment due to health problems or old age. Another possible explanation for the hauntings can be seen with deja vu, or the experiencing of intense familiarity with something in the present environment that leads you to believe you have experienced it before. An exemplification of this theory can be seen when Robin experienced feelings of familiarity while listening to a song during one of the vigils, but could not place where she had heard it before. This feeling of familiarity is derived by the brain s inability to recall the information related to the potential memory, and is sometimes referred to as the tip of the tongue phenomena. Rather it is the basic hygiene which any company needs to follow if it needs to sustain in the race for market share. So, what should a marketer adopt as a strategy? While there are two school of thoughts that argue about the same, I choose to adhere to diplomacy. As it is true for every strategy, in implementation of it lies the crux. There are examples of brands which faltered in the implementation and ended up cannibalizing for no gain or for a loss of revenue and then there are these who have learnt to effectively deploy it as a successful tool. If carefully planned, we even may talk about new opportunities that can lead to increased sales and market share (Proactive Cannibalization). And if a company does not have a strategic plan for digital transformation someone else will (Passive Cannibalization). To exemplify my stand on why the only answer is Effective cannibalization we have a look at some previous decisions. Taking the example of The New York Times, which saw newspaper sales plunge when they began posting free online versions of their stories on the internet, it would not be wrong in calling it as inefficient Cannibalization. But in this case, every other newspaper faced the same situation since if they did not provide such services, the market share of New York Times would increase, which was then undesirable. So they rushed and joined the league since Cannibalism hurts if you eat your own toes, but it s better than starving . The Effect Of Temperature On Our Cognition Introduction When a person describes someone, as being warm one understands it as a person who is friendly and not as someone who is physically warm. Using temperature as a way to describe a person has been understood as a metaphor, however studies have revealed that there is a connection between the association of warmth and feelings of social belonging (Ijzerman et al., 2012). The belief that our physical world has an influence on our cognition is called the embodiment theory (Chen, Poon Dewell, 2014). Examples Of Visual Persuasion And Propaganda In Mass Media Aizhan Akhmetbek Visual persuasion and propaganda in mass media: example of Putin s covers in Time magazine As we have seen throughout the course visual communication techniques play significant role in our life since it touches upon almost every sphere starting from social aspects to political ones. These techniques are not important per se but rather there is a particular purpose they seek. One of these purposes is persuasion. According to Lester (p. 77): communication is fundamentally and essentially a matter of persuasion, attitude change, behavior modification, and socialization through the transmission of information . Images are an essential part of the visual persuasion, which modern mass media incorporates. As we have observed in our readings this visual persuasion can take different forms in order to be the most effective and to achieve its goal. Lester states that: most information, whether factual or not, is communicated through the mass media. More and more that information relies on the emotional appeal inherent in visual presentations (ibid). Moreover: pictures have always been the surest way of conveying an idea (ibid). This conclusion follows from the fact that the nature of arbitration depends largely on autonomy of the parties, who choose arbitration procedure as the procedure in which the dispute will be settled; place where the arbitration is to be held; arbitral tribunal etc. Probably the most important and considerable expression of the autonomy is the right to choose the law, which is to be applied to merits of the dispute. Empathy Altruism Model argues that altruism does exist and explains why people help others even though they are not related. The Empathy Altruism Model, is established on the idea that emotional response of empathy is produced when an individual is seen to be in need. It could be argued that the individual feels empathy for the other person who is in need, and being able to feel and take into consideration of another s feelings, directs the helping behaviour at relieving the person who is in need and therefore altruism is produced by altruistic reasons . Paper Two: Boyhood Director and producer, Richard Linklater s Boyhood was a super hit American drama film that was released in the United States in July 11, 2014. Boyhood, to this date is still one of my most favorite movies. It is taken place over a course of ten to eleven years (2002 2013). It is about a boynamed Mason Evans Jr. who lives with his older sister Samantha Evans, and his single mother Olivia Evans. Mason s father, Mason Evans Sr. had great impact to Mason Jr. throughout his childhood. What s spectacular about this movie is that the same actors and actresses were used all throughout the time span. Mason grew up how many ordinary boys do with divorced parents. His mother would get into relationships with other men, but never choose to go back with Mason s father. The family moves to Houston and his father would sometimes come visit and take him and his sister out to places. It would be easier for Mason if his father and mother got back together which unfortunately doesn t happen. You could say that Mason struggles with life as he grows up. He goes through family problems, financial problems, peer pressure, relationship problems, breakups, etc. Now, many teenage boys experience at least one of these problems. That s just life. He receives top honors at school, accolades from his American and Indian comrades, rises to the director of the local hospital, and becomes the richest doctor in his town. Critics argue this is Desai s comment about perfect Indian society, where adherence to filial piety, respecting one s parents, elders, and ancestors, is paramount (Crane). Rakesh s view of it leads to a breakdown in his relationship with his father. The father feels neglected by his family because they no longer respect his wishes. To Rakesh, belief in protecting his family from the ills of society, despite their temptation, proves his dedication to family (Desai). Filial piety in the abstract is a good standard to live by, but it could lead to destruction because adhering to it removes emotions. In the beginning, the relationship between Rakesh and his parents was an admirable one. Rakesh considers his parents feelings prior to making major decisions. From choosing a wife to becoming the primary caretaker to his father after his mother s death, Rakesh s sole desire seems to make his parents proud. According to the plaintiff, White Star Line, which owns and operates Titanic, owes a duty of care to all of the passengers on the ship. All of the passengers relied upon White Star Line to take them to New York safely. Therefore, the crew on Titanic owed duty of care to not only provide food and comfort, but more importantly safety to the passengers. Breach of duty occurs when defendant s action has created risk of harm to others. In this case, the plaintiff believes that the crew of the Titanic behaved in unreasonable manner in many ways. The actions of the crew members resulted in the Titanic struck a large iceberg and eventually sank causing large casualties, so the duty of care was breached. Trapping has been in America as long as we became a county it was once a very profitable way of income and helped our economy thrive. Now many people are against it from personal beliefs of it being cruel to animals. Yet some people have it in their blood and it is a tradition for them making sure it will never die. The first disclaimer is the difference in the title and the first sentence. The title How a Dog s Life can Make you Happier is starkly contrasted to the first sentence which refers to dogs improving health. Personally, health and happiness are related but very different. The media article is not all bad. Time is taken to include that walking the dogs may contribute to the increased health of the owner. However, it implies that increased health will always come. After reading the scientific article it is known that fact is not true. In fact owning a dog can cause issues for the disabled creating unwanted social situations, this can affect their health. On a different note, I do believe that the article, generally speaking, does not fail in relating to the scientific article. As mentioned earlier it does imply correlation is not causation, which is important. Even if the rest of the article distracts from that point, the majority of the article points towards the idea that dogs do help with health. The information picked from the science article reveals that health can be related to owning a dog. Quotations from scientists are used to give it merit. Posting, rather than filming, caused the plaintiff harm. It is clear the employee acted within the scope while filming. As a service worker who often closes the store, an employee should have experience with difficult customers late at night. As such, the situation fell within the normal course of his duties. The worker s main goal was not a personal motive, but to close the store. He thought filming the plaintiff would incentive her to leave. Posting falls outside the scope of employment for a few reasons. First, he posted the video to his personal account for the purposes of entertaining online viewers. He also knew that Vega did not approve of him being on YouTube during work hours, but did so anyway. Scapegoats have been humanity s way of pointing the finger and ignoring any wrongdoing that may have led to a failure. No one wants to gain the responsibility and criticism that comes with failure, but appointing a scapegoat seems to be the easy way of dealing with it. The discussion in the second chapter revolves around the political situation in which violent outbreaks have been caused by religious people. Although there are many examples that prove Plato s suggestion, people such as Edmund Gettier have questioned and disproved the notion of knowledge as justified true belief. In response to Gettier s findings, many have tried to modify or find an alternative to the Justified True Belief model in search for the true definition of knowledge. In this paper, I will outline and discuss Plato s Justified True Belief argument, outline and discuss Gettier s response to Plato s argument, and lastly, present and analyze four solutions to the Gettier problems. 1.
