Comparing Canby s Tender Mercies
Tender Mercies is about Mac Sledge who a country singer with a troubled life. He is suffering
from alcoholism and has given up on relationships. Horton Foote wrote the screenplay 1983 with
the themes of love, relationships, and religion. Mac Sledge has a daughter from a previous
marriage to country singer, Dixie. The daughter, Sue Anne shows up to rekindle the father
daughter relationship. Rosa Lee and her son Sonny help Mac get back on his feet and start a
new life with them. Rosa is a hotel owner and a widow whose husband died in combat in
Vietnam. I chose this movie because my life is has some similarities with this movie. I also had a
rough childhood because my father and I never got along. As I got older, I started doing badly in

They bring him back from tragedy when his daughter dies in a car accident. At the end Mac is
shown playing catch with Sonny across the street. He looks so sad, but Foote shows that Mac is
trying to move forward with Sonny. Christianity plays a big part in this movie. I am Catholic, but
once I started praying and talking God, my life s perspective changed. Just like Mac, I saw that
my life can be better and happier. Mac getting baptized helped him find love and peace in the arms
of God. Even though, Sue Anne and Mac s father and daughter relationship was the greatest, he got
the peace of mind that his daughter was trying to accept

Review of Paddy Whacked Essay
English, T. J. Paddy Whacked: The Untold Story of the Irish American Gangster. New York:
Regan, 2006, 442 p.p
Throughout his career T.J English has written five books and a multitude of articles for the LA
Times, The New York Times, Playboy, and a variety of other magazines and newspapers. All of
his books (The Westies, Born to Kill, Havana Nocturne, and The Savage City) and articles cover
some aspect of the criminal world, whether it be the criminal themselves, or the act that they carry
out. T.J English was awarded the New York Press Club Award for Best Crime Reporting back in
2010 and had already written two books about organized crime which shows that he is more than

Another misconception I had was that gangsters/mobsters controlled only corrupt policemen and
judges when in fact, they controlled people at all levels of the government, occasionally even the
president. Important characters like president James K. Polk, the Kennedy s, and several senators
had a relationship with Irish American gangsters that contributed to the politician as well as the
gangster s success. Their strongest relationships though, were with the police force. Becoming a
policeman was encouraged by the White Anglo Saxon Protestants because who better to take on
the dangerous, low paying job than a Paddy? (61) And so, Irishmen who often had grown up
with famous mobsters ended up as the majority of the police force; mobsters not only gained
more power in the local area due to this, but the stage was now set for corruption at all levels as
well.
In addition to the educational facts, I also learned some neat fun facts about gangsters and their
traditions. Old Smoke Morrissey was the first true Irish Mob Boss, and as such he was the one who
established the looks, desires, and attitude that we derive our stereotypes from. He started the
tendency of wearing striped suits, hats, big rings, and pocket watches, as well as having a well
kept beard and hoping to be accepted by aristocratic society through money. The famous book The
Great Gatsby was actually inspired by the mixture of glamour and danger that

Indonesi A Country Of Indonesia
Located between the Indian and Pacific oceans in the Southeast Asia, Indonesia ranked number four
(as in 2014), as the most populous country in the world with 252,812,245 milion people
(worldometers, n.d.). 13,194,000 million people alone are living in the capital city of Indonesia,

Indonesia pledged to unite and build one country, one language and one nation (Wanandi, 2002).
Jusuf Wanandi (2002) stated that this is due to the Dutch colonialism in the form of the Netherlands
East Indies that led to the establishment of the Indonesian nation and state. Indonesia is also known
as the largest Muslim country in Southeast Asia as there are 90 percent of Indonesians are Muslim,

Political And Historical Conflict Of India And Pakistan
Long history of political and historical conflict can trigger two countries to fight over a problem
very minimal. The Kargil war was fought because a country crossed another country s border. This
was a war between two countries India and Pakistan they are very similar countries they share
common cultural, geographical and similar economic. Before 1947 Indiaand Pakistanwas a whole
country but in 1947 after the British Raj new nations were formed. When the nation got divided
into two India ended up with a majority of Hindu and a minority of muslim population. In Pakistan
the majority is muslim with a minority of hindu, it emerged as a Islamic Republic. After the split
of the two countries have had three majors wars and one undeclared war. The Kargil warwas fought
in May of 1999 and ended July of 1999, it was located in Kargin the district of Kashmir, India
had named it operation Vijay. This was an inter state war, it was fought in mountain range,
which is called a high altitude warfare. It was very dangerous because of the harsh cold and
rough mountain, also both counties had access to nuclear power. This was one of the first wars
that was widely covered by the media. India lost about 500 soldiers, and pakistan lost about 5000
soldiers. The difference is quite shocking but India was more prepared and had more power than
pakistan.
The war started when the pakistani military went on the Indian side of the Line Of Control. So

How Can Historians Make Use Of The Stories That The Romans
How can historians make use of the stories that the Romans told about their founders and
foundations? Abstract. There are two distinct stories regarding the foundation of ancient Rome,
with claims to two founders. The story of Romulus and Remus describes the literal foundation of
the city where as the Aeneid addresses the origins in the foundations of the Roman people being
descended from Aeneas. In regards to their use to historians, though there is debate as to the
legitimacy of historical facts, looking beyond the actual story and noting the difference between
versions particularly in Romulus and Remus can give clues of Roman society during the time of it
being written. The information contained within the stories of foundation reflects the needs of the
Romans citizens and the influences of the era. Introduction. Through the study of past evidence,
historians become capable of creating educated interpretations of the past based on such evidence
and previous knowledge. Difficulty in interpretation does not come from insufficient evidence, with
an abundance of preserved historical works from writers, Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus for
example, but the unreliable nature of literary tradition (Cornell, 1986) resulting in differentiated
opinions of the usefulness of ancient evidence particularly with the incompatible stories of Roman
foundation. The usefulness of stories from Romans can become increasingly valuable though there
are some historians of the opinion the

Federal Bureaucracy
What is a federal bureaucracy? According to American Government: Roots and Reform federal
bureaucracy is defined as the thousands of federal government agencies and institutions that
implement and administer federal laws and programs. When the bureaucracy was first created it
contained only three small departments; State, Treasury, and War. Over time the Executive branch
and bureaucracyhave grown significantly, now employing over three million people. This began
with people getting fed up with the dismal living situations of the early 20th century. They began
looking to the governmentto regulate living and working conditions, as well as child labor and food

Research Paper On Influenza Pandemic
The Influenza Pandemic of 1918
It was 1918 early moring at an crowded army base in Kansas when it started. It would become the
deadliest disease since the middle ages, when the black dealth wiped out one thrid of Eurpoes
population. It may have started in the United States but it would pass all around the world. The
Influenza Pandemic of 1918 was originally a bird virus but then it mutated into a human virus.
Today we know it as the flu but back then it had many different names such as the Spanish
Influenza, The Spanish Lady and of course the Influenza Pandemic of 1918. It had 3 waves, one
worst than the last. Children started to sing a song that fall: I had little bird its name was enza, I

Consumer Driven Health Plans
Running head: THE DOWNFALLS OF CONSUMER DRIVEN HEALTH PLANS
The Downfalls of Consumer Driven Health Plans
Jamiee Coates
Professor Rhonda Bunce
July 27, 2008
Abstract
Healthcare today is a very important issue. Lack of health insurance can affect the health and
productivity of workers. Many people today do not have health insurance. Employment based
health insurance is in high demand to retain employees. The high healthcare costs make it hard for
employers to offer employees quality health plans. The premiums for employers are increasing so
they are forced to opt for cost saving health insurance plans. Consumer driven health plans are on
the rise and have become an option for many employers.
The Downfalls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Employer contributions to these accounts are excluded from employees taxable income and
individual contributions are tax deductible. (Contribution to HSAs) The amounts that are
contributed by the employers into the Health Savings Accounts for employees are treated as
employer provided coverage for medical expenses. My class reading discuss that most of the
Health Savings Accounts have high deductibles. The deductibles have to be met first so this leaves
the employees with an out of pocket cost for their medical services. Numerous employees with high
deductible plans may postpone medical care and end up with severe conditions that might have
been prevented. Consumer driven health care plans and Health Savings Accounts might turn out to
be another cause for the rise of health care cost instead of the resolution. There is no federal law
that states that employers must offer employees health insurance benefits. Competitive
requirements have resulted in the offering of employee based health insurance plans to employees.
Since employer provided healthcare benefits are the major source of health insurance for most
people for most employees, it is recommended that employers understand what types of health
insurance plans their employees would like. Employers should really listen to better understand
employee s health care needs. They should offer a range of health plans that would fit all of their
employees. Employees would be able to

American Beauty
American Beauty A Sociological Movie Review American Beauty, a film that was written by
Allan Ball and directed by Sam Mendes in 1999 is a unique piece that demonstrates many
sociological themes throughout the development of the plot. The characters strive to portray
themselves as the All American Family. They live in a nice house, drive nice cars and seem
perfectly normal to the general public, but the audience is allowed to view the deep set issues that
plague the main characters; Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey), Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening),
Jane Burnham (Thora Birch), and Jane s best friend Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari). As the plot
develops there are many obvious parallels relating the lives of the characters to Merton s Strain...

During the course of the film, Lester Burnham goes through a large change. When we first meet
Lester he is living his life as a ritualist. He goes to work every day because that is what he is
supposed to do, but he puts in little to no effort and he has little regard for the completion of his
goals. He has no motivation. His marriage is failing and he has an empty relationship with his
daughter. Lester says both my wife and daughter think I m this gigantic loser, and they re right, I
have lost something. I m not exactly sure what it is, but I know I didn t always feel
thisВ…sedated. But you know what; it s never too late to get it back (American Beauty). From
this statement we can see that there is going to be a change in Lester over the course of the
movie. When he meets Jane s friend Angela we can see an immediate change in Lester. He lusts
for her constantly and his life becomes consumed by trying to spend time with her and help her
to be attracted to him. He suddenly becomes more enthusiastic about life. He describes this as
feeling that he had been in a coma for twenty years and he is finally waking up. After this Lester
completely alters his lifestyle. He leaves his job, begins to work out everyday, buys his dream car
and starts smoking pot with Ricky Fitz. Before he met Angela, Carolyn was in charge of everything

During the years up World War II, Stalin was able to industrialize Russia and make it an
economically viable nation. The war and its aftermath, however, was a defining moment for the
USSR. With the war won, the USSR began a long and slow economic decent. The war had given
USSR s economy incentive to be innovative and therefore competitive. But by winning the war,
USSR had no necessity or desire to change fundamentally to compete in the transformed post war
international context and therefore doomed itself (23). The Soviet economy, whose industry began
to stagnate and was nortorious for its poor quality, experianced economic growth at 2 percent (26).
The foundation of the economy, its industrial centres, soon became outdated and inefficent.
At the same time, post war capitalism in the west was going through a period of change that would
result in great economic prosperity. Prior to WWII, capitalism, because it was seen as the cause of
evils such as WWI, imperialism, and the Great Depression, lost some of its acctractiveness. Within
this context, socialism, with its emphasis on social justice , was appealing. But after WWI, nstead of
a final economic crisis...capitalism experianced an unprecedented boom (20). Unprecidented

Prometheus s Rule In The Book Anthem
The laws say that men may not write unless the Council of Vocation bids them so. (1). In the
book Anthem by Ayn Rand Prometheus begins his story by explaining the sin he s committing by
writing down the experiences he s had in the time he found the tunnel, another crime. Prometheus
states, since the Council does not know of this hole, there is no law permitting to enter. And
everything which is not permitted by law is forbidden. (31). The Council has ultimately made
their people think of each other as a collectivism rather than thinking of themselves as
individuals, this is another rule and the deadliest rule since if this rule is broken the penalty is
death. As Prometheus explain, and this is the Unspeakable word, which no men may speak nor

unspeakable word. (49). By limiting the people s individuality, even as far as denying the existence

Discipleship Essay
Discipleship
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a Disciple is one who takes another as his teacher
and model. Christian Disciples have faith and commitment to God, they use their own time to
give service others; they sacrifice their home life possessions and money. Christian Disciples
preach to others about the Good Doings of Jesus and the excellence of God. Christian Disciples
resist other temptations. They produce self control, orderliness, obedience and a capacity for co
operation with others. Anybody can be a disciple; for example a Portadown College student is a
disciple of the school. To be a Christian disciple however, takes a different kind of self discipline.

This means that like salt we should purify, preserve and flavour other people s lives. We should
also be like light in that we are visible Christianity is something that should be seen we should be
a guide like a light and also a warning. A true disciple follows the commandments presented by
Jesus on Mount Sinai. These 10 commandments are often referred to as the law and they are a
basis as to how we should live our lives.
As a disciple, you should also be forgiving. If someone sins against you, you should not only
forgive him seven times as Peter thought; but seventy times seven as Jesus tells us. This means
there is no limit as to how many times we should forgive someone. Jesus used the parable of the
unforgiving servant to demonstrate this. He tells of a king who was owed a great sum of money
by one of his servants. The king let the servant off with this though. A man owed the servant a
small amount of money and he still asked for it. The king found out about this and re instated his
debt. The servant should have shown the same forgiveness that he was shown.
Jesus used another story to indicate how we should lead our lives. He told of two house builders;
one who built his house on a rock and one on sand. Jesus explained that anyone who hears the
words and acts on them was like the wise man that built his

Comparing Dionysius And Socrates
Ethics are what separates civilized men from savages, driving their decisions, and determining
their destiny. The actions of both Dionysius and Socrates, in both Bacchae and Phaedrus
respectively, are driven by their personal ethics and beliefs in justice. Bacchae, a Greek tragedy
written by Euripides, tells the story of the Greek God Dionysus s arrival to ancient city of Thebes,
and the city s reaction towards him and his strange religion. Phaedrus on the other hand is a
dialogue, written by Plato, about a series of arguments between Socratesand Phaedrus starting with
what makes a good speech, journeying into the fundamental understanding of the universe itself.

Dionysius here is essentially listing the injustices he as suffered by the city of Thebes,
promising to make undo any harm he causes after being accepted, warns that his rejection will
result in his wrath, and finally disguises himself as preacher to find willing followers. Dionysius
views on justice are what separates him from the other gods, in that he acknowledges the harm
his actions will bring to Thebes, promising to undo all the damage upon their acceptance of him,
while most of the other gods would leave after satisfying their quest for vengeance. The most
important line in this quote is the last sentence I ve transformed myself, assumed a mortal shape,
altered my looks, so I resemble any human being (70 73) , in that he wants people to choose to
follow him out of their own free will, rather than forcing or scaring the people into compliance.

achieve justice for the defamation of his mother, and be worshiped by other, but is forced to make

Autobiography Of The Vaudeville Era
The Vaudeville Era was an incredibly influential time for American musical theatre. It s existence
gave rise to several performers from classic vaudeville acts to Ziegfeld Follies performers, and
burlesque dancers. From (and contributing to) it s death sprang popular new mediums of
performance and entertainment (Revue, Radio, Talkies, and Burlesque). There is little surprise that
nostalgia for vaudevillebegan closely after its death and continues to influence many forms of
American entertainment today. Gypsy is story about a family vaudeville centered act trying to
make it in a time when vaudeville was dying out. The story contains content about vaudeville
and burlesque as it is a biography of the famous burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee. Gypsy
followed Gypsy Rose Lee from vaudeville to burlesque. Burlesque was synonymous with
stripping at this time and is partially credited with killing vaudeville. In the movie Gypsy , the
narrator and mother of Miss Gypsy Rose Lee made a comment about how washed up vaudeville
acts go to burlesque . because the narration was done from the point of view of Gypsy s mother,
the vernacular included early to mid 1900 s slang such as the big time (best vaudeville circuit
/ Orpheum Circuit) and banana oil (a ridiculous or wrong statement). Gypsy features many musical
numbers, many of which are the musical acts performed by Gypsy throughout her life; both in
vaudeville and burlesque. The musical style is on key with vaudeville,

The Theory Of The Birth Territory Theory Essay
The theory I selected to apply to the above situation is the Birth Territory theory. This theory was
created from empirical data collected by the authors who serve as both midwives and researchers. It
has a critical post structural feminist undertone and elaborates on the ideas of Michel Foucault. The
Birth Territory theory predicts and elaborates on the relationships between jurisdiction (use of
authority and influence), terrain (the birthing environment), and personal emotional and
physiological experience by the mother. This nurse midwifery theory was chosen because both of
the major concepts directly correlate with the incident and are critical aspects of labor and delivery
situations. MAYBE ELABORATE A diagram of the Birth Territory theory can be seen in Appendix
A. Key concepts included in this theory are terrain and jurisdiction. Sub concepts listed under
terrain include surveillance room and sanctum . Sub concepts listed under jurisdiction include
midwifery guardianship , integrative power , midwifery domination , and disintegrative power .
Terrain signifies the aspects of the birth environment. These include physical and geographical
features such as the birthing furniture, as labor and birthing accessories, and personal support
systems (birthing partner). Terrain includes two sub concepts: sanctum and surveillance room . A
sanctum is a homely birthing environment optimally designed to promote a private, healthy labor
and birth. Amenities included

Are government whistleblowers acting in the public interest, or do they endanger the public by
exposing classified information? Just as government transparency has waned in recent years, there
have been several instances of very public national intelligence whistle blowing. Large scale leaks
such as those published by The Guardian and WikiLeaks have prompted debate on issues of
government secrecy, as well as the balance between security and liberty. High profile
whistleblowers like Bradley Manning, Julian Assange, and Edward Snowden have, at great personal

As history can attest, government whistleblowers act honorably for the greater good despite
threat of prosecution. Government transparency, especially in acts of war, is important to a
functioning democracy. J. William Leonard, former US classifications czar, In the documentary

types of deliberations, done in secrecy is a tremendous disservice to the American people because
these are things being done in their name so, whether you agree with them or not, to have a free

The Beginning Of Renaissance Art
The beginning of Renaissance art can be tracked all the way back to Italy in the late 13th and early
14th and 15th centuries. During this Renaissance period, Italian scholars and artists saw themselves
as bringing back the ideals and achievements of Roman culture. Their art tried to capture the
experience of the individual and the beauty and mystery of the natural world. The Italian
Renaissancewas considered a rebirth of old values in art such as literature and philosophy. It was a
period for the artist to develop that aimed for the revival of naturalism. Its influence moved through
Europe and brought back the cultural and scientific ideas that shaped artistic pieces for the next half
a century. Stefano Da Verona was an Italian artist who

Instead of having flat, stiff images, faces had not looked more realistic as bodies were painted in
more realistic form as their poses looked more human like, and figures now expressed real

fluidity and not as much detail.. Although Giotto in this time period had strived towards adding a
perspective, it wasn t until the arrival of the architects Brunelleschi and Leon Battista Alberti that it
became big style to incorperate for many painters. Dossi s work of The Holy Family came in a time
late during the Renaissance. A time called the High Renaissance . Despite the growing realism
being achieved in their art, High Renaissance artists such as Dossi aimed for beauty, and harmony
more than realism, which was the focus in the past. Their paintings may have been based on nature
but they had no interest in replication. Instead they looked for the ultimate beauty within the
picture. This provoked artists towards the idea of perfection. Greek philosophy actually influenced
this style in the high Renaissance. It provided the secret of the perfect human type with its
proportions, muscular structure, oval face, triangular forehead, straight nose, and balance with the
weight on one hip, which can be seen in the immensely expressive sculpture of Michelangelo
(Botticelli). The difference in the paintings between the two time periods

Death In Kurt Vonnegut s A Tale Of Two Cities
Death can be seen all throughout life, and all deaths can be for different reasons, whether those
reasons be noble, villainous, or, in most cases, simply neither. Throughout both A Tale of Two
Cities, written by Charles Dickens, and Slaughterhouse Five, written by Kurt Vonnegut, death can
be seen as a common topic betwixt both novels at one point or another, albeit each topic of death
can be very different at times. Charles Dickensis a beloved author, responsible for many classic
works such as A Tale of Two Cities
. He was born February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth, England. He

In Slaughterhouse Five, death is taken in a light manner, and is seen by the main protagonist, Billy
Pilgrim, shows death throughout his experiences in the book as an impermanent and weightless
event, which is the complete opposite of how Dickens portrays death. Throughout Slaughterhouse
Five, Vonnegut places the words So it goes. after every death, or multiple deaths seen at roughly the
same time, eventually explaining this phrase as something the Tralfamadorians say after somebody
because everyone is alive forever, even if at different times, so therefore death is meaningless in the
eyes of those in Slaughterhouse Five. The message about death that Slaughterhouse Five attempts
to bring is far different than the message A Tale of Two Cities attempts to bring. While
Slaughterhouse Five tries to tell us that death is meaningless and holds no weight, A Tale of Two
Cities tries to tell us that death holds a lot of weight in the world, and that in some cases can be the
most meaningful thing in the world. Vonnegut throughout his book takes a tone that is aloof or
uncaring when it comes to death, a tone that tells us that he thinks death is meaningless, or
weightless, whereas we can see that Dickens takes a more serious tone when it comes to death,
showing that he has a deep respect for meaningful death, albeit when when he thinks that there is a
pointless death, his tone changes to one of frustration or chastising. Vonnegut, on the other hand,
keeps the same tone about death throughout the entire book, never changing his tone when an
important death happens, or when a meaningful death occurs, but always keeps the same tone that

Stages Of Alcoholism Leading Cirrhosis Of The Liver Essay
Stages of Alcoholism Leading to Cirrhosis of the Liver
Mikal Norvell
Fortis Institute, Dr. Bassant
Abstract
This paper describes, briefly, the stages of the alcoholism as it slowly damages the liver, and
finally results in permanent, irreversible damage called cirrhosis. Excessive alcohol consumption,
or alcoholism is the number one cause of cirrhosis in the U.S. Though tolerance levels are
different for each individual, daily consumption of more than ten alcoholic drinks over ten or more
years contribute to a higher risk of cirrhosis. The first part of the paper will describe the liver and
what the liver does. I will also discuss different levels of drinking leading to alcoholism. Finally,
the paper will also discuss the deterioration levels leading to the signs and symptoms of cirrhosis.
Keywords: Cirrhosis, a chronic disease of the liver marked by degeneration of cells, inflammation,
and fibrous thickening of tissue. It is typically a result of alcoholism or hepatitis.
Stages of Alcoholism Leading to Cirrhosis of the Liver
The liver is the upper part of the abdomen and it the only organ is the body that can regenerate
itself, which is why a person can donate part of their liver to another. What does a liver do? The
liver stores glycogen, a.k.a. fuel, for the body. It helps process fats and proteins from digested
food. The liver makes a protein that enables blood to clot. It processes some oral medications, and
removes poisons, toxins, and alcohol from the

Ivan Ilych Quotes
The Death of Ivan Ilych
Thought provoking and brutally honest, Ivan Ilych s life and death divulged the idea that life is
not meant to live like others, but to live authentically. When Leo Tolstoy published The Death of
Ivan Ilych (1886), he sought to challenge society s pride of striving to live a shallow and
materialistic life. Significant insight was brought about into how Ivan Ilych s life was considered
artificial and terrible by perceiving how he spent his life in the story. Moreover, Ivan Ilych s life
reflected upon the grievance of yearning to live pleasantly and properly. It ultimately exposed how
his suffering and illness freed him from his decorous, but dull life.
What is so profound about the saying, Ivan Ilych s life had been most simple and most ordinary
and therefore most terrible? (Tolstoy, 1886)
What is so profound about the given quote is that it captures the raw meaning of living an artificial
life to nothing more than of a proper and decorous degree. Furthermore, it foreshadows future
events for Ivan Ilych, such as his wife s emotional abuse. He blindly wished a miserable life upon
himself precisely when he said, Really, why shouldn t I marry? (Tolstoy, 1886). When Ivan Ilych
first started to realize how much of a nuisance his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

example is when Ivan Ilych lay on his death bed and Tolstoy stated, And his professional duties

might all have been false (1886). He was clearly implying that Ivan Ilych had lived his life
artificially not authentically, and reinforced his belief that vying for a pleasant and proper life was

Compare And Contrast Walter And Beneatha
Lorraine Hansberry wrote a novel in 1959 called A Raisin in the Sun. In this book, the Youngers,
an African American family of five is living together in a very small apartment located in
Chicago. Mama owns this apartment, her two kids Walter Lee and Beneatha live with her, as well
as Walter s wife Ruth and their son Travis. After the death of Walter and Beneatha s father, Mama
receives an insurance payment because of his passing. There are many opinions on what to do with
this money. Walter and Beneatha both have ambition. There goals are very different but through
this quest of hopes and dreams, they have to remember that everything happens for a reason, even
if it doesn t seem that way. Walter Lee is an African American man who is constantly trying to make
things right for his family. He is very selfish to begin with. Walter basically just expects the
$10,000 to go to him to open a liquor store. When the check arrives, that is all he cares about. He

point of views on the cultures, God and society. Beneatha also has a different view on the money
that the family receives. Beneatha agrees that the money is Mama s, but Mama supports her in

Writing In The Help
Writing in The Help Writing has had a profound place in human history. It has allowed humanity
to prosper, by recording our knowledge and preserving our thoughts. Kathryn Stockett s historical
fiction novel The Help, about the experiences of black maids in 1960 s Mississippi, features many
symbols and examples of the powers and advantages of writing. This includes the book and
articles Skeeter writes, Aibileen s writing, and the written and unwritten laws of the South. Racial
prejudice is alive and well in Jackson, and indeed almost all of the South. However, various people
are shown trying to change this. But how are they planning to accomplish this in a world dangerous

Aibileen is shown to be a great writer and instrumental in getting Skeeter s book off the ground.
Ever since Aibileen dropped out of school to pay the bills, she has been practicing her writing in
the aforementioned prayer book. Indeed, Aibileen s son, Treelore Clark, had been working on a
novel about working as a black man in Jackson which inspired Skeeter s book. Unfortunately,
Treelore was killed before he was able to finish his book and testify against the racism and
prejudice of the South. Even with this seed of dissent motivating her, Aibileen was unable to
bring herself to talk about her experiences until she wrote them down. For Aibileen, writing is
like writing to God she is wholly truthful. it allows her to be more truthful and organize her
thoughts, which proves instrumental in telling her story: telling the truth. In The Help, writing is
used to allow the truth to be told about their unique experiences. Writing has the power to
solidify ideas, for better or for worse. Putting things on paper makes it much clearer than anything
you keep in your head. For example, when Skeeter Phelan stumbles upon a book describing all
the Jim Crow laws of the South, they suddenly become much more profound much more real.
Skeeter had been exposed to these ideas for her entire life ( We all know about these laws ), but
this was the first time (she s) seen them written down .By writing them down, the rules became
more powerful and more like actual laws rather than something that can be

Should Birth Control Pills Be Available For Teenage Girls...
As time passes and things change, so does a girl s body and many different things. Due to a lot of

As this generation goes on, a lot of foods are being processed with more and more hormones
every time. This causes little girls at the age of ten or eleven to start getting their menstrual
cycle due to all the hormones in the variety of foods. The young, undeveloped girls have so
many hormones that they result in an irregular menstrual cycle. As many people know, it is bad
for a girl s menstrual cycle to get delayed, within a period of a long time, because it can cause
various complications. The birth control pill will help regulate the majority of any irregular
menstrual cycles. Sometimes the girls do not want to talk to their doctor about the circumstances
because some are too young to even imagine what is coming their way. Girls will prefer to
conversate with their parents and then go to a pharmacy right away to get the pill. Even though,
the pill will not be effective immediately by the time their next cycle comes around the pill would
have regulated their menstrual cycle. Having over the counter birth pills is a faster and more
effective way instead of making an appointment and having to wait impatiently just for a
prescription. Girls at that age are not usually sexually active however there should be no chance so

Comparing The Landlady And The Monkey s Paw
Many Stories show various literary elements in their text to add more detail to and context to the
plot. The Landlady and The Monkey s Paw is a perfect example that displays these elements. In
The Landlady , A businessman named Billy Weaver looks for a place to stay. He comes across a
bed and breakfast. Little does he know the contents inside that building are unthinkable. The story
The Monkey s Paw has just as much suspense. A family, the Whites, are visited by Sergeant Major
Morris. They talk about a preserved monkey paw that holds magic. The son, Herbert, is doubtful
but the parents believe that the paw may have some potential. They are warned that the paw will
have consequences along with the wishes granted. In The Landlady and The Monkey s Paw the
author uses the characterization of unusualness and sarcasm, foreshadowing death and evil
consequences, irony dramatically and verbally, the tone of darkness and deviousness, and an
unsettling and anxious mood to add details to the story.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

not normal. In addition, Herbert in The Monkey s Paw is doubtful and sarcastic about the paw s
magic being real. Hebert comments, Well I don t see the money and I bet I never will. This means
Herbert is a pessimistic and doubtful kind of character. Including characterization, these two stories

The Preservation Of Memories And Grieving Process
In Anne Carson s Nox, the preservation of memories and grieving process are shown by formatting
and themes of imagery, encapsulation, isolation, and completion. Upon first impression, Nox s
pages look photocopied, but real enough that the pages feel three dimensional, as though there s a
residue from the author lingering on the pages. Her brother s death prompts Carson to act as his
historian and detail his life through different media. Carson compiles images from different sources,
including herself, and then brings them together to form an epitaph in the form of a collage.
Collaging becomes a collection of preserved emotions from the author. Collaging helps express
emotions of the self that simple words cannot express. Nox s format being a collage pulls the
audienceinto memories of childhood. Young children making collages in art class and excitedly
running home to show their families. Except, Carson cannot show her brother or mother the
collage. Reading Nox feels very voyeuristic as a result. The audience watches Carson s grieving
process literally unfold. Carson becomes her brother s historian, collaging his life whether
positive or negative. Carson and her brother were closer as children but not at all as adults, and
many photos focus on their childhood. The photos are interspersed after definitions (Carson 5.4).
Nox becomes a vessel for the preservation of Carson s memories of her brother, whether they be
positive or negative. Light imagery, in contrast to

The Princess Bride Quotes
There are many characters in the book Princess Bride by S. Morgenstern. Some which are evil,
some which are brave, but the real hero in the story is Westley. Westley saves buttercup twice
and he also stops Humperdinck s evil plans that he was going to put forth after the wedding.
Westly is the true hero of the story because he is brave and is always willing to help even if he is
in bad condition. For example, when Buttercup was captured by Vizzini he went and saved her.
He went and fought a giant, and really good sword fighter and even Vizzini himself. Wesley had
taught himself to drink a poison liquid, but still be able to survive. He fought and put his life in
danger just to save Buttercup. Westley trained himself to sword fight very well, because when he
fought Indigo, he won even though Indigo is a very well sword fighter. Westley also won to the
giant Fezzik. Though the giant was much larger than Westley, Westley still won because of the
training he had done. This shows, Westley is very brave and was determined to save Buttercup.

Puritans In New England
The Puritans were a widespread and diverse group of people who took a stand in the 16th and
17th century in Europe. Their rise was directly related to the increased knowledge that that came to
the common people during the Enlightenment. As people learned to read and write, and as the bible
became more accessible to the commoners, many began to read the bible for themselves. The word
Puritanfirst came as a term for those who advocated more purity in the church. Under siege from
church and crown, it sent an offshoot in the 3rd and 4th decades of the seventeenth century to the

The basic beliefs of Puritans were Unconditional Election, which meant God chose who would

meant that Christ s atonement did not extend to everyone, only those who were chosen to be

Irresistible Grace, Puritans believed that once chosen by God s grace, you cannot resist it. Being
chosen meant that a person had found the right path to salvation. Being choses internally meant
that God changed a person s heart. Finally, Perseverance of the Saints, which meant a person

Sedentary Behaviour In Australia
Introduction Sedentary behaviour is often linked with many negative health repercussions such
as an increased risk to certain chronic diseases. These include obesity, cardiovascular disease and
type 2 diabetes. Overall, sedentary behaviour is a major risk factor for inadequate health and an
increased mortality rate (Wilmot, 2014). Sedentary behaviour spans from many daily functions
such as sitting down, traveling in a car or screen time which refers to spending time on a screen

Compared to the rest of the world, sedentary behaviour in Australia is at neither polar end of the
spectrum in terms of a sedentary behaviour. In Australia, 67% of individuals aged 15 and over
are leading sedentary life styles (Australian bureau of statistics, 2017). Currently evidence
suggests that there is a trend in sedentary behaviour as an individual ages, the time spent
sedentary usually increases. Young children who are aged 6 11 where shown to be the least
sedentary out of all age groups, while sedentary behaviour seemed to peak at 75 85 years old.
Evidence shows that there is almost a linear trend in age to sedentary behaviour (Matthews et

Transportation is a significant factor In the rise of sedentary behaviour. How children get to
school has vastly changed over time in 2008. 67% of children were transported by car as
opposed to 1991 where only 23% used a car as a means of transportation (Vaz, 2004). People in
the work force spend an average of 22 hours in both travel time and work time. How people engage
in their leisure time is another major concern. The most common way Australians spend their
leisure time is on screen time and other sedentary based

In my opinion, the most critical area of concern would be the damage to the Woodstock brand,
since poor management has led to violence and exploitation of festivalgoers, hosting communities,

Cuban Revolution By Andrew Caminiti
Cuban Communist Revolution
By Andrew Caminiti
The terrible conditions that many Cuban citizens lived under during the Batista regime was
unacceptable. The Cuban Citizens wanted a change and started a revolution. To find out why we
go all the way back to 1868 when the United States defeated the Spanish Army giving Cuba its
independence. The Cubans elected Fulgencio Batista who did not allow any more elections to take
place. This angered many and a new revolution leader formed, Fidel Castro. Fidel overthrew the
Batista Regime and named himself dictator. He started close economic ties with the Soviet Union.
Shortly after this the United States ended any ties with the Cuban government. The causes of the
Cuban Revolution were terrible conditions under the Batista regime, the spread of Communism,
and the Spanish American war. The effects of the Cuban Revolution were the downfall of the
economy, Cuban missile crisis, and end of any diplomatic relations with the United States. The
Cuban Revolution connects to Global citizenship because the citizens fought for their rights which

Fast Foods And Healthy Foods
Fast Foods Verses Healthy Foods Healthy foods are considered in the definition of Segen s
Medical Dictionary (2012) as any food believed to be good for you . Fast foods are considered in
the definition of Merriam Webster Dictionary (2015), as relating to, or specializing in food that
can be prepared and served quickly at a fast food restaurant that is designed for ready availability,
use, or consumption and with little consideration given to quality or significance. Problem
Statement The purpose of this research paper is to supply information concerning the functions
fast foods and healthy foods has in the environment in relation to our bodies. The function of
foods in daily life continues to be a stumbling block to the body performance that often increases
stress levels and influences the body s ability to function properly (Malhi, 2010). The
relationship between body image, stress, behavior, and student performance appear to be rare in
literature, school handbooks and resources that is readily available leaving a gap in research.
The complex nature of the body when there are levels of increased fast foods, creates
considerable challenges for the body, (Dellve Wikström, 2009), with individual who have diets
high in fast foods being subject to greater health risks (Wolever, et al., 2012). By addressing how

inability to find the one area in student affairs I am truly passionate about, so I chose to speak
with one of the most passionate individuals I know. She did not wish for her name to be
included, so I am going to refer to her as Abby Rock. Abby places strong personal value on health,
wellness, nutrition, and wants to go back into high school to teach basic principles, from health and
business, to teenagers. To help her reach this goal, Abby chose to work towards getting her master s

teachers in various classrooms to find her teaching style. I chose Abby because she is honest and

The Dickens Flynn model is an attempt by William Dickens and James Flynn (2001) to explain how
environment and genes can interact to account both for environmentally driven increases in raw

intelligence differences within the human population (Spearman s g). On first glance there is much
that appears promising about the Dickens Flynn model, for it does directly address the observable
tension between the Flynn effectand g, something that many explanations for the Flynn effect fail
to do. And yet further inspection also reveals that the model is troubling in a rather conspicuous
way it sports the overall mechanics of a Rube Goldberg machine.
Perhaps the first thing to recognize about the Dickens Flynn model is the degree to which leverage
plays the key role. For instance in the authors general outline of the model, small genetic advantages
are described as being amplified through the means of a natural attraction to environmental
surroundings that serve to enhance those advantages. Environmental influences on population wide
intelligence characteristics are said to be boosted through such factors as social multipliers and
rolling triggers. And finally, genetic and environmental forces are depicted as mutually propelling
each other by means ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why did they not gravitate instead to something more direct, with fewer moving parts? Flynn
(2007), ever the paragon of candor, provides a thorough and revealing answer in the pages of his
book What is Intelligence? There Flynn notes that during the height of the intelligence race debates,
Richard Lewontin (1976) had offered a compelling description for how an environmental influence
could uniformly impact an entire population while still leaving undisturbed any of that population s

Compassion Fatigue Essays
New workers in the health care role are often excited, energetic, and ready to take on whatever
comes at them. Little do they know compassion fatigue is nipping at their heels. Compassion
fatigue is common among health care providers and consists of five major concepts. These five
concepts are ambiguity, no win situations, role overload, role conflict, and not being adequately
recognized. Researching concepts of compassion fatigue looks at the nature and causes along with
the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. To deal with and cope there needs to be strategies and
resources that can be utilized to keep from burnout. Warning signs, Nature, and Causes Compassion

This is formed in the wake of lacking information and clear goals (Espeland, 2006). Direction and
expectations are needed to make sure a person feels comfortable with the job they are doing. If
there is no direction or expectations it becomes difficult to be confident that they are doing their
job. When a person is not confident in what they are doing then one can feel like they are
constantly making mistakes and can lead to an attitude of always being on defense. The second
concept is a no win situation where a supervisor or boss is not happy with the job a healthcare
worker does no matter how good a job the employee is doing (Espeland, 2006). Care givers and
health care providers always strive to do better and change if needed. If a supervisor or boss
gives you direction to change a way of doing things because they feel you are doing something
wrong, and then when you change they are still not satisfied a person can feel as if they can not do
anything to make the situation any better no matter what they do to change. The third concept is
role overload and this happens when the health care worker can not say no to more responsibility
and find themselves overloaded with work and

The Dissolution Of Yugoslavi Yugoslavia
The Dissolution of Yugoslavia The country of Yugoslavia was first formed as a kingdom in 1918
after combining land areas from the now both defunct Ottoman and Austro Hungarian Empires and
then recreated as a Socialist state in 1945 after the Axis powers were defeated in World War II.
The Soviet Union took control of Yugoslaviaafter the war and wrote a new constitution for the
country that established six constituent republics in the federation: Bosnia Hercegovina, Croatia,
Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbiaand Slovenia. The Republic of Serbia also had two self governing
provinces: Vojvodina and Kosovo. Yugoslavia was a part of the Soviet Union until the Union
dissolved in 1991 and as a result Yugoslavia soon followed, but this is about... Show more content

Exceptions to this pattern of stability were the marked increase of the Albanian population and a
steep decline in the numbers of Jews, ethnic Germans, and Hungarians after World War II
(Cushman). Another definitive cause of the Yugoslavian breakup was the nationalism of ethnic
groups in the early 1990s. Nationalism replaced communism as the dominant ideology in the
country. Slovenia and then Croatia were the first to break away, but this caused Serbia to become
hostile towards the two nations. Consequently, the war in Croatia led to hundreds of thousands of
refugees and also brought back memories of the harsh acts of the Nazis in the 1940s. By 1992 a
further conflict had broken out in Bosnia, which had also succeeded from Yugoslavia. The Serbs
who lived there were determined in remaining within Yugoslavia and to help build a more
homogenous Serbia. They received strong backing from radical groups in Belgrade. Muslims
were driven from their homes in carefully planned operations that become known as ethnic
cleansing . By 1993 the Bosnian Muslim government was besieged in the capital Sarajevo,
surrounded by Bosnian Serb forces who controlled around 70% of Bosnia. In Central Bosnia, the
mainly Muslim army was fighting a separate war against Bosnian Croats who wished to be part of
a greater Croatia. The presence of United Nations peacekeepers was required to contain the
situation. The idea from culminated in the Yugoslav Peace Conference,

Wyoming. He was born on January 8, 1929 and graduated cum laude from Wyoming Law
School in 1952 ( The Spence Law Firm 2). Since his graduation from law school, Spence has
dedicated his life defending the less fortunate, injured, and wrongly accused in the courtrooms, as

They were vulnerable and he felt it was now his responsibility to protect the rights of the two.
There were many obstacles in Spence s way of proving the Jones s proclaimed innocence and
rights. The prosecution had an eye witness, Wilfred Gerttula s wife. There was also an
incriminating photo of Sandy firing a shot gun, captured by the wife of Mr. Gerttula.
Spence ordered some polygraph tests to be run and ballistic evidence to be collected but each
piece of solid evidence, proving that there Sandy or her son could not have been the killers, was
withheld from the court. Certain representatives on the prosecution had the power to choose
whether or not they wanted the evidence to be presented in the courtroom and the judge approved
their actions. Spence believed that the judge was prejudiced against his team and eventually got a
new judge reassigned to the case. In the end, both the mother and son were found guilty and served
their time in prison.
One of Spence s quotes I found the most remarkable in the book was, Sometimes our hearts are

Pricing The Bond Option Of Vasicek And Cir Models
Pricing the Bond option in Vasicek and CIR models
Name: Huajun Liu
Professor: Marco Pereira
Course: Math 624
Date: 2016/12/18
1.Abstract
This report is aimed to describe how we will use Python to build an application to price risky
bond and the European options of the bond in stochastic hazard rate and interest rate models. We
are going to simulate the path of interest rate using CIR model and simulate the path of hazard
rate using Vasicek model. Then we will get the survival function from simulated hazard rate and
get the bond price from it. Lastly we will price the European options of the risky bond based on
the simulated bond price by using both closed form formula (Jamshidian, F. (1989)) and Monte
Carlo simulation.
2.Introduction
Today, an increasing number of risky bond options have been introduced to customers, but only a
few customers can understand how to price a risky bond option. The credit derivative is a new type
of financial derivative which is based on the credit condition of the loan developed in the 1990s,
and its function is to separate the credit risk from other risks of the primary assets and transfer it to
the counterparty. Also, credit derivatives can make credit risk appear in a more fluid and tradable
form, which has a great application in improving the portfolio of returns and presenting a highly
structured risk portfolio. Meanwhile, credit derivatives can be used in the investment market Avoid
risks, and thus mobilize the credit market activity.

How Comedy Makes Us Better People Summary
In the BBC article How comedy makes us better people Mary O Hara claims comedy holds a
very relevant place in not only British politics and culture, but in the entire world because it can
be used to comprehend and come to terms with confusing events or tragedies, challenge the
authority of our governments, and destroy bigoted states of mind. Humor continues to mystify
the people who study it to this day. Why does humor play a major part in our everyday lives?
What is the significance of it? O Hara interviews experts from many different fields discussing
comedy and its impact on the emotions, politics, and differing points of view. For instance, the
tragedy of 9/11 had many jokes following its events because people around the world were trying
to grasp why such a terrible thing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From neuroscientists to comedians themselves, O Hara litters the article with reliable experts to
ensure the points made in the article are diverse and rooted in credibility. Without these
resources, saying that [c]omedy is more than just a pleasant way to pass an evening (2) would
be disregarded as a matter of opinion. By supplying each point with an array of examples, O
Hara manages to show the reader that many beside herself share her points. After planting a
statement, O Hara makes sure that she backs up her claims with plenty of evidence. When
examining how comedy changes people s views of certain minority groups, O Hara lays out two
different examples of real situations where this is put into affect. She touches on the homosexual
community, disabled community, and even on a man who shared his experience from being a
policeman to expose nonsensical policies (5). By both using multiple resources and sharing
numerous examples, O Hara successfully convinced the reader that comedy does indeed hold a
very significant place in our

Gender Roles Socialization
Socialization and Gender Roles Growing up in the United States was a blast although, I have
noticed that gender role have affected in many peoples lives. Since I am only nineteen years old
I don t have much life experience. Even though I am only nineteen years old I noticed that a lot
of roles have changed from early 2000s to now. I believe that equality in genders have improved a
lot, not just the United States but, also a lot of countries all over the world. Reading about gender
roles throughout the history is very shocking on how women didn t have the same equal rights
compare to men. Up to now their are still stereotypes and equal rights that affect both men and
women. Baseballwas a big part of my life growing up. Every year

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Nifedipines
INTRODUCTION1 4
Nifedipine is calcium channel blocker widely used clinically, in the treatment of cardiovascular
disorders, including hypertension and angina pectoris.1. It has poor aqueous solubility, resulting in
variable dissolution rates and often irregular bioavailability.2 The combination of low aqueous
solubility and rapid absorption from the gastrointestinal tract leads to its classification into class II
of the Biopharmaceutical Classification System3.
Pellets are agglomerates of fine powders or granules of bulk drugs and excipients single most
important factor responsible for the proliferation of pelletized products is the popularity of

functional coating material, at times the core pellets themselves have been modified to provide the
desired effect. This further enhances the role of pellets in oral dosage form

New York: Regan, 2006, 442 p.p Throughout his career T.J English has written five books and a multitude of articles for the LA Times, The New York Times, Playboy, and a variety of other magazines and newspapers. All of his books (The Westies, Born to Kill, Havana Nocturne, and The Savage City) and articles cover some aspect of the criminal world, whether it be the criminal themselves, or the act that they carry out. T.J English was awarded the New York Press Club Award for Best Crime Reporting back in 2010 and had already written two books about organized crime which shows that he is more than qualified to write a book about Irish American Gangsters as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another misconception I had was that gangsters/mobsters controlled only corrupt policemen and judges when in fact, they controlled people at all levels of the government, occasionally even the president. Important characters like president James K. Polk, the Kennedy s, and several senators had a relationship with Irish American gangsters that contributed to the politician as well as the gangster s success. Their strongest relationships though, were with the police force. Becoming a policeman was encouraged by the White Anglo Saxon Protestants because who better to take on the dangerous, low paying job than a Paddy? (61) And so, Irishmen who often had grown up with famous mobsters ended up as the majority of the police force; mobsters not only gained more power in the local area due to this, but the stage was now set for corruption at all levels as well. In addition to the educational facts, I also learned some neat fun facts about gangsters and their traditions. Old Smoke Morrissey was the first true Irish Mob Boss, and as such he was the one who established the looks, desires, and attitude that we derive our stereotypes from. He started the tendency of wearing striped suits, hats, big rings, and pocket watches, as well as having a well kept beard and hoping to be accepted by aristocratic society through money. The famous book The Great Gatsby was actually inspired by the mixture of glamour and danger that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Kargil war was fought because a country crossed another country s border. This was a war between two countries India and Pakistan they are very similar countries they share common cultural, geographical and similar economic. Before 1947 Indiaand Pakistanwas a whole country but in 1947 after the British Raj new nations were formed. When the nation got divided into two India ended up with a majority of Hindu and a minority of muslim population. In Pakistan the majority is muslim with a minority of hindu, it emerged as a Islamic Republic. After the split of the two countries have had three majors wars and one undeclared war. The Kargil warwas fought in May of 1999 and ended July of 1999, it was located in Kargin the district of Kashmir, India had named it operation Vijay. This was an inter state war, it was fought in mountain range, which is called a high altitude warfare. It was very dangerous because of the harsh cold and rough mountain, also both counties had access to nuclear power. This was one of the first wars that was widely covered by the media. India lost about 500 soldiers, and pakistan lost about 5000 soldiers. The difference is quite shocking but India was more prepared and had more power than pakistan. The war started when the pakistani military went on the Indian side of the Line Of Control. So india took the approach of operation Vijay ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. How Can Historians Make Use Of The Stories That The Romans How can historians make use of the stories that the Romans told about their founders and foundations? Abstract. There are two distinct stories regarding the foundation of ancient Rome, with claims to two founders. The story of Romulus and Remus describes the literal foundation of the city where as the Aeneid addresses the origins in the foundations of the Roman people being descended from Aeneas. In regards to their use to historians, though there is debate as to the legitimacy of historical facts, looking beyond the actual story and noting the difference between versions particularly in Romulus and Remus can give clues of Roman society during the time of it being written. The information contained within the stories of foundation reflects the needs of the Romans citizens and the influences of the era. Introduction. Through the study of past evidence, historians become capable of creating educated interpretations of the past based on such evidence and previous knowledge. Difficulty in interpretation does not come from insufficient evidence, with an abundance of preserved historical works from writers, Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus for example, but the unreliable nature of literary tradition (Cornell, 1986) resulting in differentiated opinions of the usefulness of ancient evidence particularly with the incompatible stories of Roman foundation. The usefulness of stories from Romans can become increasingly valuable though there are some historians of the opinion the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Consumer Driven Health Plans Running head: THE DOWNFALLS OF CONSUMER DRIVEN HEALTH PLANS The Downfalls of Consumer Driven Health Plans Jamiee Coates Professor Rhonda Bunce July 27, 2008 Abstract Healthcare today is a very important issue. Lack of health insurance can affect the health and productivity of workers. Many people today do not have health insurance. Employment based health insurance is in high demand to retain employees. The high healthcare costs make it hard for employers to offer employees quality health plans. The premiums for employers are increasing so they are forced to opt for cost saving health insurance plans. Consumer driven health plans are on the rise and have become an option for many employers. The Downfalls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Employer contributions to these accounts are excluded from employees taxable income and individual contributions are tax deductible. (Contribution to HSAs) The amounts that are contributed by the employers into the Health Savings Accounts for employees are treated as employer provided coverage for medical expenses. My class reading discuss that most of the Health Savings Accounts have high deductibles. The deductibles have to be met first so this leaves the employees with an out of pocket cost for their medical services. Numerous employees with high deductible plans may postpone medical care and end up with severe conditions that might have been prevented. Consumer driven health care plans and Health Savings Accounts might turn out to be another cause for the rise of health care cost instead of the resolution. There is no federal law that states that employers must offer employees health insurance benefits. Competitive requirements have resulted in the offering of employee based health insurance plans to employees. Since employer provided healthcare benefits are the major source of health insurance for most people for most employees, it is recommended that employers understand what types of health insurance plans their employees would like. Employers should really listen to better understand employee s health care needs. They should offer a range of health plans that would fit all of their employees. Employees would be able to ... American Beauty American Beauty A Sociological Movie Review American Beauty, a film that was written by Allan Ball and directed by Sam Mendes in 1999 is a unique piece that demonstrates many sociological themes throughout the development of the plot. The characters strive to portray themselves as the All American Family. They live in a nice house, drive nice cars and seem perfectly normal to the general public, but the audience is allowed to view the deep set issues that plague the main characters; Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey), Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening), Jane Burnham (Thora Birch), and Jane s best friend Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari). He goes to work every day because that is what he is supposed to do, but he puts in little to no effort and he has little regard for the completion of his goals. He has no motivation. His marriage is failing and he has an empty relationship with his daughter. Lester says both my wife and daughter think I m this gigantic loser, and they re right, I have lost something. I m not exactly sure what it is, but I know I didn t always feel thisВ…sedated. But you know what; it s never too late to get it back (American Beauty). From this statement we can see that there is going to be a change in Lester over the course of the movie. When he meets Jane s friend Angela we can see an immediate change in Lester. He lusts for her constantly and his life becomes consumed by trying to spend time with her and help her to be attracted to him. He suddenly becomes more enthusiastic about life. He describes this as feeling that he had been in a coma for twenty years and he is finally waking up. After this Lester completely alters his lifestyle. The war and its aftermath, however, was a defining moment for the USSR. With the war won, the USSR began a long and slow economic decent. The war had given USSR s economy incentive to be innovative and therefore competitive. But by winning the war, USSR had no necessity or desire to change fundamentally to compete in the transformed post war international context and therefore doomed itself (23). The Soviet economy, whose industry began to stagnate and was nortorious for its poor quality, experianced economic growth at 2 percent (26). The foundation of the economy, its industrial centres, soon became outdated and inefficent. At the same time, post war capitalism in the west was going through a period of change that would result in great economic prosperity. Prior to WWII, capitalism, because it was seen as the cause of evils such as WWI, imperialism, and the Great Depression, lost some of its acctractiveness. Within this context, socialism, with its emphasis on social justice , was appealing. But after WWI, nstead of a final economic crisis...capitalism experianced an unprecedented boom (20). As a disciple, you should also be forgiving. If someone sins against you, you should not only forgive him seven times as Peter thought; but seventy times seven as Jesus tells us. This means there is no limit as to how many times we should forgive someone. Jesus used the parable of the unforgiving servant to demonstrate this. He tells of a king who was owed a great sum of money by one of his servants. The king let the servant off with this though. A man owed the servant a small amount of money and he still asked for it. The king found out about this and re instated his debt. The servant should have shown the same forgiveness that he was shown. Jesus used another story to indicate how we should lead our lives. He told of two house builders; one who built his house on a rock and one on sand. Jesus explained that anyone who hears the words and acts on them was like the wise man that built his ... The actions of both Dionysius and Socrates, in both Bacchae and Phaedrus respectively, are driven by their personal ethics and beliefs in justice. Bacchae, a Greek tragedy written by Euripides, tells the story of the Greek God Dionysus s arrival to ancient city of Thebes, and the city s reaction towards him and his strange religion. Phaedrus on the other hand is a dialogue, written by Plato, about a series of arguments between Socratesand Phaedrus starting with what makes a good speech, journeying into the fundamental understanding of the universe itself. The most important line in this quote is the last sentence I ve transformed myself, assumed a mortal shape, altered my looks, so I resemble any human being (70 73) , in that he wants people to choose to follow him out of their own free will, rather than forcing or scaring the people into compliance. • 15. Autobiography Of The Vaudeville Era The Vaudeville Era was an incredibly influential time for American musical theatre. It s existence gave rise to several performers from classic vaudeville acts to Ziegfeld Follies performers, and burlesque dancers. From (and contributing to) it s death sprang popular new mediums of performance and entertainment (Revue, Radio, Talkies, and Burlesque). There is little surprise that nostalgia for vaudevillebegan closely after its death and continues to influence many forms of American entertainment today. Gypsy is story about a family vaudeville centered act trying to make it in a time when vaudeville was dying out. The story contains content about vaudeville and burlesque as it is a biography of the famous burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee. Gypsy followed Gypsy Rose Lee from vaudeville to burlesque. Burlesque was synonymous with stripping at this time and is partially credited with killing vaudeville. In the movie Gypsy , the narrator and mother of Miss Gypsy Rose Lee made a comment about how washed up vaudeville acts go to burlesque . because the narration was done from the point of view of Gypsy s mother, the vernacular included early to mid 1900 s slang such as the big time (best vaudeville circuit / Orpheum Circuit) and banana oil (a ridiculous or wrong statement). • 16. The Theory Of The Birth Territory Theory Essay The theory I selected to apply to the above situation is the Birth Territory theory. This theory was created from empirical data collected by the authors who serve as both midwives and researchers. It has a critical post structural feminist undertone and elaborates on the ideas of Michel Foucault. The Birth Territory theory predicts and elaborates on the relationships between jurisdiction (use of authority and influence), terrain (the birthing environment), and personal emotional and physiological experience by the mother. This nurse midwifery theory was chosen because both of the major concepts directly correlate with the incident and are critical aspects of labor and delivery situations. MAYBE ELABORATE A diagram of the Birth Territory theory can be seen in Appendix A. Key concepts included in this theory are terrain and jurisdiction. Sub concepts listed under terrain include surveillance room and sanctum . Sub concepts listed under jurisdiction include midwifery guardianship , integrative power , midwifery domination , and disintegrative power . Terrain signifies the aspects of the birth environment. These include physical and geographical features such as the birthing furniture, as labor and birthing accessories, and personal support systems (birthing partner). During this Renaissance period, Italian scholars and artists saw themselves as bringing back the ideals and achievements of Roman culture. Their art tried to capture the experience of the individual and the beauty and mystery of the natural world. The Italian Renaissancewas considered a rebirth of old values in art such as literature and philosophy. It was a period for the artist to develop that aimed for the revival of naturalism. In Slaughterhouse Five, death is taken in a light manner, and is seen by the main protagonist, Billy Pilgrim, shows death throughout his experiences in the book as an impermanent and weightless event, which is the complete opposite of how Dickens portrays death. Throughout Slaughterhouse Five, Vonnegut places the words So it goes. after every death, or multiple deaths seen at roughly the same time, eventually explaining this phrase as something the Tralfamadorians say after somebody because everyone is alive forever, even if at different times, so therefore death is meaningless in the eyes of those in Slaughterhouse Five. The message about death that Slaughterhouse Five attempts to bring is far different than the message A Tale of Two Cities attempts to bring. While Slaughterhouse Five tries to tell us that death is meaningless and holds no weight, A Tale of Two Cities tries to tell us that death holds a lot of weight in the world, and that in some cases can be the most meaningful thing in the world. Vonnegut throughout his book takes a tone that is aloof or uncaring when it comes to death, a tone that tells us that he thinks death is meaningless, or weightless, whereas we can see that Dickens takes a more serious tone when it comes to death, showing that he has a deep respect for meaningful death, albeit when when he thinks that there is a pointless death, his tone changes to one of frustration or chastising. Vonnegut, on the other hand, keeps the same tone about death throughout the entire book, never changing his tone when an important death happens, or when a meaningful death occurs, but always keeps the same tone that says that he believes death holds no weight, in complete contrast to Dickens, who, no matter the circumstance, whether the death is important or meaningless, always seems to keep some level of respect for death in the way he talks about it. ... Ivan Ilych Quotes The Death of Ivan Ilych Thought provoking and brutally honest, Ivan Ilych s life and death divulged the idea that life is not meant to live like others, but to live authentically. When Leo Tolstoy published The Death of Ivan Ilych (1886), he sought to challenge society s pride of striving to live a shallow and materialistic life. Significant insight was brought about into how Ivan Ilych s life was considered artificial and terrible by perceiving how he spent his life in the story. Moreover, Ivan Ilych s life reflected upon the grievance of yearning to live pleasantly and properly. It ultimately exposed how his suffering and illness freed him from his decorous, but dull life. What is so profound about the saying, Ivan Ilych s life had been most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible? (Tolstoy, 1886) What is so profound about the given quote is that it captures the raw meaning of living an artificial life to nothing more than of a proper and decorous degree. Furthermore, it foreshadows future events for Ivan Ilych, such as his wife s emotional abuse. He blindly wished a miserable life upon himself precisely when he said, Really, why shouldn t I marry? Woodstock 1969 Case Study As the intended event planner for Woodstock 2010, it is my responsibility to examine previous Woodstock events (1969, 1994, and 1999) to assist in my preparation for this event. Furthermore, by studying the past triumphs and failures, I can recreate the elements that worked and improve upon the elements that were failures. Indeed, close attention will be paid to identifying the most critical areas of concern, identifying three additional areas needing attention, and determining the previous event s goals and objectives. In my opinion, the most critical area of concern would be the damage to the Woodstock brand, since poor management has led to violence and exploitation of festivalgoers, hosting communities, and sponsors (Crowd Management Strategies, 2015). Another major area of concern is the location that in 1999 was on Griffiss Air Force Base s concrete and tarmac surfaces versus 1969s dairy farm location, which led the 1999 crowd to experience widespread heat exhaustion issues (19 Worst Things About Woodstock 99,... Fast foods are considered in the definition of Merriam Webster Dictionary (2015), as relating to, or specializing in food that can be prepared and served quickly at a fast food restaurant that is designed for ready availability, use, or consumption and with little consideration given to quality or significance. Problem Statement The purpose of this research paper is to supply information concerning the functions fast foods and healthy foods has in the environment in relation to our bodies. The function of foods in daily life continues to be a stumbling block to the body performance that often increases stress levels and influences the body s ability to function properly (Malhi, 2010). This person was my grandfather. He was an inspiration in my life. This project has given me the opportunity to reflect back onto my grandfather s stories and historical accomplishments for on March 19, 2012 was the day my grandfather Richard Joel Pettingell left this earth. There was no such thing as a dull moment in my grandfather s life. The time I got to spend with my grandfather filled my head with only a faction of the life he lived. Although is knowledge surpassed the requirements of being an excellent professor, this career was not meant for his life. The Dickens Flynn Effect The Dickens Flynn model is an attempt by William Dickens and James Flynn (2001) to explain how environment and genes can interact to account both for environmentally driven increases in raw intelligence scores over time (the Flynn effect) and for genetically driven and stable individual intelligence differences within the human population (Spearman s g). On first glance there is much that appears promising about the Dickens Flynn model, for it does directly address the observable tension between the Flynn effectand g, something that many explanations for the Flynn effect fail to do. And yet further inspection also reveals that the model is troubling in a rather conspicuous way it sports the overall mechanics of a Rube Goldberg machine. Perhaps the first thing to recognize about the Dickens Flynn model is the degree to which leverage plays the key role. For instance in the authors general outline of the model, small genetic advantages are described as being amplified through the means of a natural attraction to environmental surroundings that serve to enhance those advantages. Environmental influences on population wide intelligence characteristics are said to be boosted through such factors as social multipliers and rolling triggers.
