The Breakdown Of The Titanic
On Sunday, April 14th, 1912 at 11:40PM the starboard side of the Titanic scraped along an iceberg.
The passengers felt a vibrating jar. Water Began to rush into the 300 foot gash. First Officer,
William Murdoch quickly closed the watertight doors. Captain Smith returned to the bridge and
asked Officer Murdoch, What have we struck? Murdoch confirmed that the Titanic had struck an
iceberg. Captain Smith asked Fourth Officer Boxhall to inspect the forward area of the hull. Officer
Boxhall hurried to inspect the damage and returned to inform them that the Orlop deck was flooded
forward of the #4 Watertight bulkhead. Captain Smith asked him to establish the Titanic s position
and requested that Thomas Andrews and the ship carpenter Sound the... Show more content on

Suddenly, the ship took a slight but definite plunge and the ocean came rolling up in a wave
over the steel front bridge. Passengers that didn t disappear under the water right away were
frantically trying to run up the steadily rising deck to the stern. At about 2:18 the Titanic tilted
slowly up and there remained motionless. The lights suddenly went out, came on again for a
single flash, and went out all together. Then first sinking back a little at the stern and slid slowly
forward through the water. With a thundering roar of underwater explosions, the proud ship, the
beautiful Titanic went to her doom. The cries of hundreds of passengers struggling in the ice cold
water was horrific. Although there was room in most of the lifeboats, crewmen were fearful that
the boats would be swamped by people if they went back. Several boats eventually return, but too
late. A few people are pulled to safety, but most died from exposure. Over the next several hours,
numerous ships try in vain to contact the

Harmful Effects Of Bisphenol A
For my science fair project, I choose to test the effects of Bisphenol A (BPA) on plants after
learning that BPA has been removed from many plastics due to the harmful hazards of this
chemical. Does BPA effect plants? Specifically, I will be testing to see if different amounts of BPA
given to plants will have an impact on plant grown and plant life span. Bisphenol Aor BPA is
produced worldwide in large amounts and is found in many of our everyday items. In 2002,
approximately 2.8 million pounds of BPA were produced and that amount has increased to over 6
billion pounds in 2008. (What Is BPA?) Some research has been done to see if BPA is harmful, but
most of the research has been done with animals. Researchers have found a link between... Show

When BPA was created it was life changing. Yes, we already had plastics, but when BPA was
created our plastic became stronger and much improved. With BPA, we could do much more with
plastics than in the past like being able to transport water in spill proof bottles and ways to
transport food while keeping it sealed shut. BPA allowed food to be heated in the microwave
without the plastic melting. People felt safer when polycarbonate plastics were created because it
made all plastic safety gear much stronger and more protective. Having this new and improved

The Rhetorical Analysis Of Benjamin Banneker s Letter
Analysis of Benjamin Banneker s Letter
Benjamin Banneker wrote a letter to Thomas Jefferson and George Washington in it he states, We
hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by
their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness which presents the facts that all men should be treated equally (Banneker 21). This is
not happening, therefore Benjamin Banneker was obliged to write a letter. In his letter, he suggests
the abolition of slavery because, as stated in his letter, all men are created equal (Banneker 23). In
Benjamin Banneker s letter to Thomas Jefferson he exploits fear tactics and formal diction to
effectively persuade Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.
Benjamin Banneker utilizes fear tactics to efficiently drive his point of abolishing slavery home.
In his letter he states, you cannot but acknowledge that the present freedom of mercifully received
and that it is the peculiar blessings of Heaven (Banneker 11). This quote displays fear tactics
directed at Jefferson and Washington because he is implying that even though everything is
tranquil now because of the blessings from heaven, it will not be if slavery continues. Therefore,
making Thomas Jefferson and George Washington fearful of what Benjamin Banneker will do or
what will happen if slavery is not abolished. Making the two men fearful is an effective way for
Benjamin to get his point

Sweet Dreams Incorporated (SDI) utilizes two manufacturing plants both in North Carolina and
South Florida to produce mattresses and box springs. SDI has encountered financial difficulty
since the beginning of the 1990s that has been prolonged due to the ineffective strategies they
have implemented. As the problem prolongs, the company is faced with potentially being forced
to file for bankruptcy as it s current, quick, and debt ratios, all have failed to meet the contractual
limits of the agreement between SDI and First International Bank (Sweet Dreams, Inc., 1997).

Lax Credit Standards:
In an effort to remedy such disproportion between inventory and demand, in 1995 SDI began to
negligently issue credit lines. As exemplified by Table 2, due to such leniency net sales continued
to increase between 1995 and 1997 (Appendix A). However, as illustrated by Table 1 the relaxed
credit standards caused a 39% spike in accounts receivable from 1994 to 1995 (Appendix A).
Consequently, the increase in inventory and accounts receivable negatively impacted the current
ratio of the firm. As a result, the firm s liquidity dropped significantly below industry average in
1995 to 1.90 from 2.96, well above the 2.25 average, in 1994 (Appendix C). Therefore, the cash
flow of the firm was negatively affected by the issuance of credit as accounts receivable continued
to rise.
Loan Reliance:
As inventories and account receivable steadily increased, the firm distressingly opted for a short
term solution. By means of long term lending in 1994 and higher short term credit in 1994 and
1995, SDI chose to temporarily resolve the current issues of the firm without considering the
potential long term ramifications. As illustrated in Table 1, long term loans remained the same
while short term bank loans increased by 71% between 1994 and 1995; a drastic change within a
short span of time (Appendix A). Similarly, as depicted in Table 2, the interest on the firm s short
term loans rose from 1994 to 1995 whereas the

Automation levels will be increased to improve margins and to offset second shift/overtime costs.
Mission Statement
Reliable products for low technology customers: Our brands offer value. Our stakeholders are
bondholders, stockholders, customers and management.
Tactics
Research Development: We will concentrate our existing product line into the Low End and
Traditional segments. The traditional product will migrate to the Low End segment. The High
product will migrate to the Traditional segment. During the early years we will migrate (gradually)
our Performance and Size segment products to the Traditional segment. We can also introduce a
new product to work in the Traditional market.
Marketing: Initially we will attempt to keep pace with the awareness and accessibility of our
competitors products. After we establish our cost leadership position we will revisit our situation
to decide whether sales and promotion budgets should be reduced or if we should continue to
match our competitors. Our prices will be lower than average.
Production: We will significantly increase automation levels on our products. However, because
automation sets limits upon our ability to reposition products with R D, we will postpone
automation for the High End and Size products until they arrive in the Traditional Segment. We will
prefer second shift/overtime to capacity expansions.
Finance: We will Finance our investments primarily through long term bond

Ender s Game Film Analysis
Can you imagine a future where one must be connected to the Internet in order to function in
society? Will there come a day when everyone and everything will be constantly monitored and
tracked by the government? These futuristic prospects are often related to scenes from science
fiction films, where many visions of the futureare adapted to create an advanced society. In these
films, innovations in technologyis usually the focus point, where audiences explore what life would
be like and the effects of technology in a futuristic society.
One such film that displays the use of advanced technology well is Ender s Game , directed by
Gavin Hood. This film holds up a mirror to today s society as the rising use of advanced

If the individual s information isn t securely stored, what horrendous consequences might follow,
with the information in the hands of criminals, extortionist, hackers, terrorists and the like?
However, according to one survey, approximately one fourth of all professionals between 18 to
50 years of age would like to directly connect their brains to the Internet. In near future, they are
not going to have to force most of us to get a microchip implanted on the back of our head. We
will do it eagerly, yet no one will ever even stop to consider the potential for abuse. This makes us
question, Will fiction ever become fact?
Today, the Internet has become such an integral part in our lives that it is hard to remember how
we ever survived without it. And with each passing year, the number of devices connected to the
Internet continues to grow at an exponential rate. However, we just cannot help ourselves. Our
society has a love of affair with new technology. And some of the things that are being developed
right now are beyond what most of us ever dreamed of possible. In matter of time, governments all
over the world will have the ability to continually monitor and track the activities of everyone under
their power at all times. Do we really want our future generations, or even ours, to be that

1. Smoking in Philippine Setting
A joint collaborative effort of the Republic of the Philippines Department of Health (DOH) and
National Statistics Office, through DOH s100% Smoke Free Philippines campaign backed by
Philippine s Republic Act 9211, The TobaccoRegulation Act of 2003, conducted two related
important studies regarding smoking. Both researches were published last February 16, 2012 as
factsheets for public references. The first study focuses on Youth/Student population and the second
one was on adult. (http://www.smokefree.doh.gov.ph/index.php)
Under the youth research, Philippines Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), it concluded that
46.2% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, which is tantamount to more than 1 in 5 students
surveyed. Almost 9 in 10 of students surveyed saw anti smoking media messages and over two
thirds of them think smoke from other is harmful. The study further concluded that approximately
86% of the current smokers want to stop smoking. (http://www.smokefree.doh.gov.ph/uploads

Aloe Ver The First Thing Most Of Us
Aloe vera, Latin name Aloe barbadensis, is likely the first thing most of us reach for when we
arrive home from an enjoyable day in the summer with a sunburn. However, Aloe vera has far more
uses then just to relieve pain from minor burns, it has been, and continues to be a valuable
horticultural crop. Aloe verais a plant that is propagated through various means, be it vegetatively,
asexually, or even through the use of microproagation. Though, not all these methods of
propagation are a successful as the others. It is important to first examine the plant itself, before
even considering methods of propagation. Initially individual plants start more or less as a
rosette and sucker and elongate slightly in height to form a spready mound 1 to 3 tall; plants
are medium coarse to coarse in texture (Arnold, M., 2008). The form of the Aloe vera plant is
likely very recognizable to anyone who has spent a significant amount of time in Texas, or other
states within the Southwest, Aloe vera has short stout stems suckering at the base to form
colonies of thickened, erect, sword like leaves (Arnold, M., 2008). Though we do typically see
this plant grown widely throughout our region, it likely calls another, larger continent home.
Thought to be native to North Africa, it is widely naturalized in South and Central America as
well as the Mediterranean region it is widely planted in South Texas and Mexico (Arnold, M.,
2008). While we do see the Aloe vera plant widely within our USDA

Archetypes in Siddhartha
In analyzing the novel Siddhartha, we find that Herman Hesse has incorporated many literary
techniques to relay his message to the reader. By using various writing approaches to convey the
theme of the novel, Hesse appeals to the readers senses and aides them in grasping the novel.
Included in these techniques are symbolism, metaphor, allusion, and archetypes. He compares
many issues that Siddhartha faces to everyday objects and forces, making the noveleasier to
understand. Three of the main archetypes
Hesse uses to get his point across are trees, rivers, and sleep. One of the more obvious symbols
used in the novel is a tree. Cross culturally, it is extremely common for trees to represent wisdom.
In Hebrew literature, when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In several instances is the novel, Siddhartha falls asleep (the reader should also note that this
usually occurs under a tree) and wakes up anewed with a new outlook on life.
Then he had fallen asleep, and on awakening he looked at the world like a new man.... Never had
a sleep so refreshed him, so renewed him, so rejuvenated him! (76)
Just as in the traditional English story A Christmas Carol, where Scrooge goes to bed and wakes
up a new man after a series of nightmares, many authors have used the metaphor of sleep to show
emotional growth in their characters. Another case in point is Kate Chopin s book on a woman s
self discovery appropriately titled The Awakening.
Just like these authors, Hesse proves to be no stranger to this choice of symbolism. He illustrates
quite effectively and allows the reader to notice and reflect on Siddhartha s personal development
on more than one level. It is easy to see that many cross cultural themes were brought into
Siddhartha.
Through writing on more than one level, Hesse has created a literary masterpiece that is extremely
deep and meaningful. The application of the symbols he chose makes some of the themes in the
novel easier to see and decipher. Using the archetypes that he did makes the novel one that many
civilizations will read and understand for generations to come. Works Cited

not actions which society typically views as dramatic. Her most notable accomplishment is living

connection with her church and subsequent Christian community. She stressed that she has been an

Outline For Exothermic Reaction
what is an exothermic reaction and how can we recognize them?
Chemistry; types of reactions.
Question:
What is an exothermic reaction and where can we find them.
Thesis:
Despite the fact that there are many different types of reactions, exothermic reactions are a
category of reactions that give off energy, this is what makes them so dangerous as well as
interesting. It is also what allows them to put on the best show.
To start things off lets go over what a chemical reactionis. A chemical reaction is a chemical
change which forms new substances, such as compounds. Common chemical reactions include a
candle burning, a nail rusting. *Physical changes reposition molecules but do not affect their
internal structures. Physical changes you may already know of are, scrambling eggs, boiling
water and even slicing an apple. Where as a chemical changes result in the creation of different
chemical substances at the molecular level. Chemical change requires breaking or making of
bonds between atoms, and are usually irreversible. Chemical changes such as petrol burning, iron
rusting and baking a cake. You cant simply dry rust to get it back to pure metal or freeze a cake to
get the ingredients out. ***

Oxidation is defined as the interaction between oxygen molecules and all the different
substances they may contact, from metal to living tissue. Rusting is a chemical reaction
between iron and oxygen to yield iron oxide, this reaction can be expressed as 4Fe + 3O2

Sawtooth Oak Case Study
The sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima) is in the red oak family. Native to Asia, it is noted for
its fast growth (two feet per year) and early acorn production. The first acorns are routinely
produced in five to 10 years versus the 25 or 30 years it usually takes native oaks to start
producing acorns. The acorns are large and dropped in September or early October. The sawtooth
is also noted for its consistent annual production and not being as subject to frosts or poor crops
which often limit white oak production. Although the red oak group has a reputation for being less
palatable (containing more tannic acid) than the white oak group, the sawtooth does not. Years ago,

The Outcasts Of Poker Flat Analysis
In Bret Harte s The Outcasts of Poker Flat (1869), the mining camp of Poker Flat believes the
only way to become a town is to banish a group of people called the ВЁoutcastsВЁ. However,
many of the steps taken to get rid of this group are just as wicked as the crimes committed by the
outcasts . Through conflicts between different groups of people, the story conveys the theme that
hypocrisy leads to the realization of truth. Some of the main hypocritical events in The Outcasts of
Poker Flat are when the townsfolk want to rob Oakhurst, when Oakhurst helps Tom Simson, and
when the Duchess and Piney are thought of as equal when found dead. One of the main conflicts in

Tim Simson, a man that Oakhurst took money from in gambling, showed up with his fiance
Piney at the outcasts camp. Oakhurst won the entire fortune . . . then handed [Tim] his money
back (3). This represents Oakhurst as a hypocrite himself because a gambler s purpose is
typically to earn as much money as possible, and instead he gives the money back. This
transaction of money between a good gambler and a careless gambler reveal John Oakhurst s true
identity as a kind, caring man. The third conflict in the story is between lustful women and
innocent women. The Duchess, who represents the lustful woman, and Piney, who represents the
innocent woman, are found dead in each other s arms at the end of the story. Harte writes, when
pitying fingers brushed the snow from their wan faces, you could scarcely have told them from the
equal peace that dwelt upon them (8). This event is extremely hypocritical in that a prostitute and a
virginal woman, who would not typically be associated with each other, cannot be told apart from
one another. This exposes the truth about death; that all are equal. The main hypocritical events in
The Outcasts of Poker Flat reveal identities as well as ideas about death. From this analysis, it is
shown that not everything is at it appears. These actions reinforce the theme in that hypocrisy leads

our past mistakes so we will be sure to never repeat them. By reading about katniss s bravery, we
can emulate it ourselves. It shows that one person really can make a difference. For example, in
the beginning Katniss was a scared girl and throughout the book you can slowly see her
changing into a fearless leader that is the influence of Panem. This just goes to show that one act
of bravery can go a very long way. In conclusion, these books all teach very different lessons
about life that will help better our society. These lessons of charity, generosity, hope, faith,
bravery will save us from the turmoil we are currently in. Books can heal, inspire hope, and save.

The History of American Literature
The history of American Literature starts well before this land was even called America. It has
been a great evolution to come from tribal symbols and drawings to today s Stephen King and
Danielle Steele. Literature has gone through many phases and was impacted by great events and
ideas in American history. The earliest form of literature in what would one day be known as
America were far from what modern day people would consider Literature . The Natives who
inhabited this land first had unwritten ways of passing on experiences, beliefs, and stories. Natives
relied heavily on the verbal telling of these stories to younger generations. The same stories, fables,
or belief structures were told repeatedly, each time identical to the last,... Show more content on

Mather s rewarding career included writings on science and medicine as well as theology and
history. His Sentiments on the Small Pox Inoculated (1721) was instrumental in introducing the
smallpox vaccine to New England. A new genre for American writers, the travel narrative, would
become especially influential late in the 1700s. Travel narratives include Travels Through the
Interior Parts of North America (1778) by Jonathan Carver and Travels Through North and South
Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee Country, etc (1791) by William Bartram .
Travel stories often blended observations on nature and landscape with tales of personal courage
and achievement. The first American newspaper, the Boston News Letter, was founded in 1704,
and joined by the Boston Gazette in 1719. At a time when newspaper journalism was concerned
primarily with reporting political events, the New England Courant, started by James Franklin in
1721, became the first newspaper to include literary entertainment. Franklin s younger brother
Benjamin Franklin published humorous social commentary in the Courant under the pen name of
Silence Dogwood . Magazines also appeared for the first time in the colonies during the mid 1700s.
Before 1800 magazines were concerned primarily with measuring America s developing culture
against the British model. During the 1700s Boston and Philadelphia became centers of publishing
in addition to being political and commercial centers.

The Long History Of Summer Camp
The words summer camp conjure up fond memories of campfires, s mores, pranks, and color
war for many Americans. What appeals to many campers, or prospective campers, is the keeping
of tradition. Many campers can trace back their relatives who attended the very same camp, and
find delight in the idea of shared experiences with their close, or distant, relatives. The long
history of summer camps in America stems from an annual trip William Frederick Gunn began to
take in 1861 in order to expose young boys to what life in the wilderness has to offer. Originally,
the Gunn s theory was that the experience would strengthen not merely muscle, nerve, and self
discipline, but developed a masculine character as well. This applied specifically for boys, but
camps for girls first appeared in 1902 with the opening of Camp Kehonka, in reflection of the
changing attitudes with reference to the role of women in society. Sleepaway camps become a
prominent institution in America in the 1900 s that influenced the youth of this country, and
continues to do so over one hundred years later, as thousands of summer camps still run every
summer, many of which are the same camps that sparked this burgeoning trend. The development
of this idiosyncratic principle in American life can be understood through the development of
various widespread opinions during, and before, the first sleepaway camp was founded.
To fully understand the roots of the summer camp ideology, it is imperative to look

Claude Bernard Accomplishments
Honor means high respect or esteem. Honor to me is someone who risks their life for the greater
good and for what is right. Claude Bernard accomplished many things in his life. He was a French
scientist and was the founder of experimental medicine. He studied the pancreas, the liver and the
vasomotor nerves. He was known for laying down the basic roles of experiments for medicine. He
was a very smart French man who was known all over the country at the time. One of his
achievements was working at the laboratory of Francois Magendie at the Colle`ge de France in
1811 where he wrote some of his best work during his lifetime. His first book was called The

works in digestion, and the function of the liver. He also worked on the blood flow of the
vasomotor nerves. The second book that Claude Bernard wrote was in 1865 and it was called
Introduction to the Study of Experimental Medicine and it explained the importance of animal
testing. If Claude Bernard didn t do this, we might not have started animal testing until the 1900s.
Later on in his life, he was able to join the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1868. That was
his biggest accomplishment because he was French and he was able to join the Swedish in science. I
think that Claude Bernard is honorable because he laid down the foundations of experimental
medicine. He invented animal testing so we could be safe when trying something new. He also
made it possible for us to know how the pancreas works and what the liver does. He told us how the
pancreas helps in digestion so we wouldn t get sick. He told us about the liver and how it works so
we know how to keep it healthy and how to help it if it stops working

Tinker V. Des Moines Independent School District Case Study
In 1969, three young activists walked into school and were told they could not symbolically
express themselves. Without these teens carrying out this simple act of rebellion, students today
would lack basic rights in the school place, as they would have no outlet outside of the home to
express their views. In order to understand Tinker v. Des Moines Independent SchoolDistrict one
must examine the history behind the case, analyze the case itself, and evaluate the impacts on
modern society.
To examine the history of a case that continues to affect students today, it is important to look at
how the discrepancy began starting with Mary Beth, John, and Christopher. The tumultuous 60s can

The Invasion of Normandy
Introduction The invasion of Normandy, also known as Operation Overlord or D Day, was perhaps
one of the most important battles in the human history. The invasion took place on June 4, 1944, at
the Coast of Normandy in France. Troops from over twelve countries, including Canada, the United
Kingdom, and the United Statesof America participated in the fight against Germany. Although the
battles were enduring and hard fought, the Allies achieved the final victory; the Allies were finally
able to set their feet on the European soil again. The Allied invasion of Normandy was a major
turning point of the war that led to the ultimate liberation of Europe from the Nazi forces.

With a strong backup, the Allied troops were able to advance through the enemy occupied
countries with lightening speed. Therefore, the attack not only led to the French people s freedom,
but also to the quick downfall of Nazi Germany. (Naval History and Heritage D Day, the
Normandy Invasion, 6 25 June 1944)
Relief of Soviet s pressure Other than causing the liberation of France and the establishment of a
new battlefront, the invasion also relieved the Soviet Union s pressure. Before the Invasion,
Germany had over two million troops fighting against the Red Army in the Eastern Front, and
many of Soviet s cities were captured. The Russians fought desperately to protect their cities.
However, after the invasion, with the launch of a new major battlefront in the West, Hitler had to
transport many of his forces to the West in order to defend his own country. Without as many
troops to fight against, the Soviet army was able to push through Czechoslovakia, Poland and
eventually penetrate into Germany; the Soviet Union s progress greatly sped up the endof the war.
(Naval History and Heritage D Day, the Normandy Invasion, 6 25 June 1944)
Significance of the Invasion on smaller scales On much smaller scales, the Battle of Normandy
was also quite important. The depressed Europeans, who had been living in the shadow of war for
the past four years, were delighted by the news of victory. In

Modern Meteorology And Its Effects On The Earth
I. Introduction and History Venus and Earth are often called twin planets due to their similar sizes
and locations, so Venus might seem like a reasonable interplanetary vacation spot. However, upon
arrival, the crushing ninety atmospheres of surface pressure and strongest greenhouse effect in the
solar system will render the trip a massive failure (Natural History). Despite their similarities, Earth
and Venus differ greatly with regards to their atmospheres, making Earth a much more hospitable
environment for human habitation. Even though Earth s atmospheredoes not receive nearly as much
appreciation as its oceans or rivers, the layers of gas enveloping Earth are even more essential to the
human race, making atmospheric destruction even more alarming. Although modern meteorology
is considered inaccurate, and precise information about atmospheric conditions is not always
available, understanding of the atmosphere has evolved and improved greatly over the millennia. In
antiquity, atmospheric phenomena was interpreted as a supernatural, often reflecting divine
opinions of man s actions (Fleming). Ancients thought of rainbows as a pathway from mortal Earth
to the Heavens, and observation was limited to the crude human senses. As modern scientific
principles became more prevalent in the 16th and 17th centuries, weather was increasingly seen as
a physical result of atmospheric conditions. For example, RenГ© Descartes discarded the
supernatural view of rainbows, instead

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN The Hush of Thunder Rock Several gnomes lowered a rowboat into
the bubbly pale purple sea. We piled in and started paddling toward the shore. From my vantage
point, I could see that the island was rather large and egg shaped. The volcanoes were positioned
near the center, and pitted glaciers lined the far side. Once we landed, the captain pulled our tiny
craft onto the sand. Some of the lounging mermaids nodded indignantly at us, as if suggesting we
had no right to intrude on their sunbathing. Then they slowly slithered on their elbows over the
sand toward the water s edge and dove in. I watched as they swam away, flapping their tails in
disgust. Some remained and simply ignored us. Emma laughed. I guess that s our welcoming party.

Society has strayed so far away from God that we cannot be guided back home.
Yeats begins the poem with the first two lines painting an image of society falling apart and
breaking down, one that O Brien refers to as a cultural breakdown. He says, The falcon represents
those forces that function productively only when disciplined. In order to maintain structure and to
prevent the gyre from widening further, our society needs discipline, otherwise our structure, our
faith, or very nature as human beings deteriorates. At this time in our society, our discipline in our
faith is gone. Our discipline in our morals and ethics is gone.
Lines 3 6 illustrate society s inability to hold together without discipline. Because the falcon can no
longer hear the falconer to find its way back home, things fall apart the result of society straying
from God. With everything falling apart, the need for someone or something to save society
becomes prominent. Since society has strayed away from God, the next solution is man as a
savior, but with the new age of war and machinery, mankind has lost their ability to save the
world. O Brien says, Everything that makes life valuable is being drenched in blood. The
ceremony of innocence refers no to one particular ceremony but is intended to suggest the grace
and order of civilized society. Moreover, there is nobody to fight the blood dimmed tide. Soldiers are

Defining Intelligence Essay
Intelligence is defined by the American Heritage Dictionary as being the capacity to acquire and
apply knowledge. When knowledge is spoken of, it is generally used in terms of education. The
extent of education a person has achieved is then what most often determines how much knowledge
one has accumulated. Nevertheless, with this definition of intelligencein mind, one might possibly
consider the average person to be intelligent. After all, even a person who has never gone to
school a day in their life is capable of acquiring knowledge and applying it to some area of their
life. Acquiring and applying knowledge could be something as simple as being shown how to mop
a floor and then conducting the job using the newly gained know how.

Children, for instance, all have different areas in which they excel. A child who excels in school
and is listed on the honor roll each term would obviously be considered intelligent. However, a
child who is very talented in music but obtains bad marks in school might not be deemed a smart
child by the average person; nevertheless, this child would also be considered intelligent.
Once a person has an idea of what intelligence is and what it means, a final thought one might
consider is what influences are responsible for the different types of intellect. Two possible
influences are genetics and the environment in which one lives, with genetics being the strongest
influence (Santrock, 2009, pg. 302). Most researchers agree that a person s genetics and
environment interact with one another to influence the outcome of that person s intelligence
(Santrock, 2009, pg. 302). Genetic influences should be pretty obvious, so there should be no need
to explain it; a person s environment on the other hand, can involve several factors. An environment
can consist of elements such as a person s school, home, friendships, family relationships, and
workplaces. All of these components factor in to influence a person s intelligence.
In conclusion, I must say that intelligence can certainly be considered a broad word. It is a word
that has varying definitions depending on the source from which the definition comes. The reason
for this seems to be because people

Conscription Plebiscites
Were the 1916 17 conscription plebiscites only about reinforcing the Army in Europe? The
conscription plebiscites of 1916 17 were not only about reinforcing the Australian troops in Europe.
The Australian government did have the power to implement conscription without holding a
plebiscite. But in 1916 the Prime Minster, Billy Hughes, knew that introducing a bill to implement
conscription would not work, and would have serious consequences. It would not have had enough
support from the government, so it would not have passed through both houses of parliament, and
it would split the Labor Party that was in power at the time. A plebiscite, on the other hand, did

The issue of conscription had brought to light the divisions within Australian society and the
government. Irish Australians, Roman Catholics, many supporters of the Labor Party and pacifists
were anti conscription (Love 2013, p. 4). Many Irish Australians, especially Catholics, had turned
against the war due to the violent and brutal suppression of Irish nationalists by British and
Australian forces in the Easter Uprising in Ireland in 1916 (Kildea 2013, Love 2013, pp. 3 4). The
Australian Roman Catholic Church had close ties to the Labor Party and Irish communities and
stood with them against conscription (Hearn 2010). The Archbishop of Melbourne, Irish born
Daniel Mannix, who had been entirely against the war since its beginning, supported the anti
conscription movement, as well as the Catholic dominated anti conscription faction of the Labor
Party. Mannix was one of Hughes most prominent opponents in his struggle to introduce
conscription (Griffin 1986). On the other side, parts of Australian society were pro conscription,
such as pro imperialists, the Commonwealth Liberal Party, the right faction of the Labor Party and
the media (Love 2013, p. 4). Hughes wanted the plebiscites to bring to an end the divisions that had
been brought to light by the conscription

Threats And Vulnerabilities Of Itrust
When discussing the threats and vulnerabilities of iTrust, it is important to identify the security
measures to potentially rectify or prevent additional security issues. The iTrust database application
presented quite a few threats and vulnerabilities. One threat discussed is the threat of a facility not
having the proper equipment needed to run a secure organization. For proper security, an
organization may need to invest in equipment or devices that are more secure out of the box. This
means that computers and/or devices that are straight out of the box are deemed to be more secure
in comparison to a computer/device that have been used.
In many cases, though the computer/device may have been swiped clean, it poses a much greater
threat if the system was susceptible to certain vulnerabilities before. In addition, with these secure
out of the box systems it is important to verify proper installation. Organizations need to be sure
that third party vendors are completely authorized to assure the information that is being installed
and updated is secure in the hands of vendors/suppliers.
Another issue that needs addressing when it comes to security is the configuration that is
established in iTrust. The iTrust organization has an issue with user access. When discussing user
access configuration, an organization may want to analyze possible configuration management.
This would entail having a server administrator that would monitor the content in a repository. In

In fact, both issues play an important role in human development over time. One main reason why

How Does Octavia Butler s Use Of Protection
Octavia Butler s indirect use of characterization creates a Motif of protection in 1815 and in
1976. By characterizing Kevin, Dana, and Nigel as Protective according to their personality.
Octavia Butler reveals the element of protection needed both in the past and the present, which
helps create the cause of white supremacy and results in violence because of the abuse and
conflict as it follows. Susan Elizabeth Phillips says: I finally figured out that not every crisis can
be managed. As much as we wantto keep ourselves safe, we can t protect ourselves from
everything. If we want to embrace life, we also have to embrace chaos. (Phillips). Knowing
protectioncannot be given in both the past and the presentbut can be prevented and prepared for.
Susan says we can t protect yourself from everything and this shows the relationship in both Dana,
Kevin, Nigel, and Rufus that everything cannot be predicted or foreseen without context clues.
Octavia Butler reveals Nigel trying to protect Dana from Tom W. owing to the fact that he tells
her to be mindful about how she speaks, because of this: he doesn t like any free and educated
black (Butler 74). Octavia Butler reveals the people in the past by presenting the element of
being protected and risking one s life for another. The past reveals having someone to protect
Dana which gives her a sense of relief knowing someone is there to care for her. Nigel warns Dana

1.How has the property tax changed over time for local governments? What are the advantages and
disadvantages of the property tax as a revenue source? In response to these questions, make sure to
refer to the main principles of taxation (equity, efficiency, adequacy of revenue, political feasibility,
and cost of administration), tax and expenditure limitations, as well as the importance of revenue
diversification for local government.
Historically, property taxes have been the primary source of the local government s income. In fact,
approximately 70% of the local governments revenue stems from property taxes (Lee, Johnson, and

This could lead to that individual moving to another location, also known as gentrification.
Political feasibility is high since it has historically been a consistent source of revenue. Cost of
administration would be relatively low since property taxes, in terms of keeping track of
properties, is relatively easy because of its tangibility and lack of mobility.
With respect to revenue diversification, local governments have attempted to diversify their
sources of revenue by implementing one or a combination of these taxes: sales taxes, income
taxes, game of chance taxes (gambling, races, lotter, and their derivatives), user charge taxes, and
sumptuary taxes (cigarettes, alcohol, and their derivatives) (Lee, Johnson, and Joyce, 2013). In
circumstances that affect the primary source of revenue, having access to other sources may serve
as a buffer for the local government. However, the problems with these sorts of taxes is
uncertainty. Property tax, as stated earlier is the most reliable while income or sales taxes rely on
income/ salaried employees and consumption of products, respectively.
2.Explain the major forecasting methods used by governments to forecast revenues and
expenditures. Explain Florida s experience with the consensus forecasting process. Discuss which
methods are more likely to be used and for what revenue

1554). The study indicated misidentifications of patients could occur, contributing to unsafe patient
practices. Wristbands used for identification can assist with identifying the correct patient in the six
rights of medication administration. While this is not a failsafe answer it is valuable in providing a
safe practice of medication administration to patients. Discuss Bar Code Scanning in Medication
Administration (BCMA) The following articles were reviewed for the purpose of addressing bar
code scanning in medication administration. Nursing requires the critical skill of accurate
medication administration. The use of electronic medication administration has brought about
many changes in the healthcare field. The article, What Determines Successful Implementation of
Inpatient Information Technology Systems (Spetz et al 2012), was reviewed to address the above
question. Computerized patients records and bar code medication systems continue to gain favor
in healthcare. This idea spread across the nation in all VA sites (Spetz et al., 2012, p. 157),
providing a safer environment for patient care. The use of bar code scanning utilizes the perfection
of computers into medication administration process. Training to use (BCMA) indicated from the
article can be cumbersome and staff can be apprehensive about the change. The time needed

Making Sarah Cry Poem Analysis
The poem Making sarah cry and the passage Don t give up the fight both show the common
theme of being different in the same way. These passages both show the theme by them
involving someone being bullied for who they are and being different. Like how Sarah is
bullied by the the boy. In Don t give up the fight Ava is bullied by Jake , the coach, and the track
team. They show the theme differently in Making Sarah cry because the point of view is from
the person who is bullying but, in Don t give up the fight it is in the point of view of the person
being bullied. The poem Making Sarah cry shows the theme being different. In the poem Sarah is
maid fun of because she is not as smart and she is slow. Another reason this

Never Cry Wolf Ecology
Ecology is a vast study of living things and how they interact. By gathering ideas from Chapter
13, Chapter 14, and Chapter 16 we learned many things about ecology. To tie these things all
together, we watched the movie Never Cry Wolf . This movie showed us that in every type of
environment there are connections that are more human than we know. The main character, Tyler,
is sent on a mission in the Arctic to study wolves and see if they are responsible for the
population decrease of caribou. He meets Rosie, a man who flies him out into the wilderness on
his plane. Rosie is very careless and spontaneous with his actions. The wolves that Tyler studies are
named George and Angelica and their children. You can t forget Uncle Albert too! Along

One being, habitat and niche. The wolves habitat was the arctic and one of its niches was that it
hunts in a pack. Another niche is that they only have a few cubs like George and Angelica had 2
cubs. Secondly, competition and predation. The text says that every ecosystem has this trait and
the movie definitely supports that. In the movie there was competition over food and the
predation of the caribou. Third, population density and dispersion. The different packs of wolves
moved all around and were dispersed and not very dense at all. Though, the caribou were very
dense and traveled all together not just a few in one pack. Fourth, population growth. Like
previously mentioned, wolves only have a few cubs so the population growth stays mostly the
same. Lastly, the ecological succession. This happened more with the caribou than the wolves
because of their decline in population from the wolves. Lastly, in Chapter 16 there were many
points about human impact on ecosystems. In Never Cry Wolf , the human impact wasn t huge,
but it existed. Ootek implied that killing a wolf is worth a lot of money. Chapter 16 focused on
water quality too, which can relate to the movie. If the wolves, or Tyler for that matter, didn t have
clean water they wouldn t be able to survive. There are not many people in the Arctic, so there isn t
much pollution. The ecological footprint of the wolves was small because they don t have trash

Water Began to rush into the 300 foot gash. First Officer, William Murdoch quickly closed the watertight doors. Captain Smith returned to the bridge and asked Officer Murdoch, What have we struck? Murdoch confirmed that the Titanic had struck an iceberg. Captain Smith asked Fourth Officer Boxhall to inspect the forward area of the hull. Does BPA effect plants? Specifically, I will be testing to see if different amounts of BPA given to plants will have an impact on plant grown and plant life span. Bisphenol Aor BPA is produced worldwide in large amounts and is found in many of our everyday items. In 2002, approximately 2.8 million pounds of BPA were produced and that amount has increased to over 6 billion pounds in 2008. (What Is BPA?) • 4. The Rhetorical Analysis Of Benjamin Banneker s Letter Analysis of Benjamin Banneker s Letter Benjamin Banneker wrote a letter to Thomas Jefferson and George Washington in it he states, We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness which presents the facts that all men should be treated equally (Banneker 21). This is not happening, therefore Benjamin Banneker was obliged to write a letter. In his letter, he suggests the abolition of slavery because, as stated in his letter, all men are created equal (Banneker 23). In Benjamin Banneker s letter to Thomas Jefferson he exploits fear tactics and formal diction to effectively persuade Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Benjamin Banneker utilizes fear tactics to efficiently drive his point of abolishing slavery home. In his letter he states, you cannot but acknowledge that the present freedom of mercifully received and that it is the peculiar blessings of Heaven (Banneker 11). This quote displays fear tactics directed at Jefferson and Washington because he is implying that even though everything is tranquil now because of the blessings from heaven, it will not be if slavery continues. Therefore, making Thomas Jefferson and George Washington fearful of what Benjamin Banneker will do or what will happen if slavery is not abolished. Making the two men fearful is an effective way for Benjamin to get his point ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

SDI has encountered financial difficulty since the beginning of the 1990s that has been prolonged due to the ineffective strategies they have implemented. As the problem prolongs, the company is faced with potentially being forced to file for bankruptcy as it s current, quick, and debt ratios, all have failed to meet the contractual limits of the agreement between SDI and First International Bank (Sweet Dreams, Inc., 1997). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lax Credit Standards: In an effort to remedy such disproportion between inventory and demand, in 1995 SDI began to negligently issue credit lines. As exemplified by Table 2, due to such leniency net sales continued to increase between 1995 and 1997 (Appendix A). However, as illustrated by Table 1 the relaxed credit standards caused a 39% spike in accounts receivable from 1994 to 1995 (Appendix A). Consequently, the increase in inventory and accounts receivable negatively impacted the current ratio of the firm. As a result, the firm s liquidity dropped significantly below industry average in 1995 to 1.90 from 2.96, well above the 2.25 average, in 1994 (Appendix C). Therefore, the cash flow of the firm was negatively affected by the issuance of credit as accounts receivable continued to rise. Loan Reliance: As inventories and account receivable steadily increased, the firm distressingly opted for a short term solution. By means of long term lending in 1994 and higher short term credit in 1994 and 1995, SDI chose to temporarily resolve the current issues of the firm without considering the potential long term ramifications. As illustrated in Table 1, long term loans remained the same while short term bank loans increased by 71% between 1994 and 1995; a drastic change within a short span of time (Appendix A). • 11. Aloe Ver The First Thing Most Of Us Aloe vera, Latin name Aloe barbadensis, is likely the first thing most of us reach for when we arrive home from an enjoyable day in the summer with a sunburn. However, Aloe vera has far more uses then just to relieve pain from minor burns, it has been, and continues to be a valuable horticultural crop. Aloe verais a plant that is propagated through various means, be it vegetatively, asexually, or even through the use of microproagation. Though, not all these methods of propagation are a successful as the others. It is important to first examine the plant itself, before even considering methods of propagation. Initially individual plants start more or less as a rosette and sucker and elongate slightly in height to form a spready mound 1 to 3 tall; plants are medium coarse to coarse in texture (Arnold, M., 2008). The form of the Aloe vera plant is likely very recognizable to anyone who has spent a significant amount of time in Texas, or other states within the Southwest, Aloe vera has short stout stems suckering at the base to form colonies of thickened, erect, sword like leaves (Arnold, M., 2008). Though we do typically see this plant grown widely throughout our region, it likely calls another, larger continent home. Thought to be native to North Africa, it is widely naturalized in South and Central America as well as the Mediterranean region it is widely planted in South Texas and Mexico (Arnold, M., 2008). • 12. Archetypes in Siddhartha In analyzing the novel Siddhartha, we find that Herman Hesse has incorporated many literary techniques to relay his message to the reader. By using various writing approaches to convey the theme of the novel, Hesse appeals to the readers senses and aides them in grasping the novel. Included in these techniques are symbolism, metaphor, allusion, and archetypes. He compares many issues that Siddhartha faces to everyday objects and forces, making the noveleasier to understand. Three of the main archetypes Hesse uses to get his point across are trees, rivers, and sleep. One of the more obvious symbols used in the novel is a tree. Then he had fallen asleep, and on awakening he looked at the world like a new man.... Never had a sleep so refreshed him, so renewed him, so rejuvenated him! (76) Just as in the traditional English story A Christmas Carol, where Scrooge goes to bed and wakes up a new man after a series of nightmares, many authors have used the metaphor of sleep to show emotional growth in their characters. Another case in point is Kate Chopin s book on a woman s self discovery appropriately titled The Awakening. Just like these authors, Hesse proves to be no stranger to this choice of symbolism. He illustrates quite effectively and allows the reader to notice and reflect on Siddhartha s personal development on more than one level. It is easy to see that many cross cultural themes were brought into Siddhartha. Through writing on more than one level, Hesse has created a literary masterpiece that is extremely deep and meaningful. The application of the symbols he chose makes some of the themes in the novel easier to see and decipher. Using the archetypes that he did makes the novel one that many civilizations will read and understand for generations to come. Works Cited Hesse, Hermann. Siddhartha. Question: What is an exothermic reaction and where can we find them. Thesis: Despite the fact that there are many different types of reactions, exothermic reactions are a category of reactions that give off energy, this is what makes them so dangerous as well as interesting. It is also what allows them to put on the best show. To start things off lets go over what a chemical reactionis. A chemical reaction is a chemical change which forms new substances, such as compounds. Common chemical reactions include a candle burning, a nail rusting. *Physical changes reposition molecules but do not affect their internal structures. Physical changes you may already know of are, scrambling eggs, boiling water and even slicing an apple. Where as a chemical changes result in the creation of different chemical substances at the molecular level. Tim Simson, a man that Oakhurst took money from in gambling, showed up with his fiance Piney at the outcasts camp. Oakhurst won the entire fortune . . . then handed [Tim] his money back (3). This represents Oakhurst as a hypocrite himself because a gambler s purpose is typically to earn as much money as possible, and instead he gives the money back. This transaction of money between a good gambler and a careless gambler reveal John Oakhurst s true identity as a kind, caring man. The third conflict in the story is between lustful women and innocent women. The Duchess, who represents the lustful woman, and Piney, who represents the innocent woman, are found dead in each other s arms at the end of the story. Harte writes, when pitying fingers brushed the snow from their wan faces, you could scarcely have told them from the equal peace that dwelt upon them (8). This event is extremely hypocritical in that a prostitute and a virginal woman, who would not typically be associated with each other, cannot be told apart from one another. This exposes the truth about death; that all are equal. The main hypocritical events in The Outcasts of Poker Flat reveal identities as well as ideas about death. From this analysis, it is shown that not everything is at it appears. These actions reinforce the theme in that hypocrisy leads to the realization of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Long History Of Summer Camp The words summer camp conjure up fond memories of campfires, s mores, pranks, and color war for many Americans. What appeals to many campers, or prospective campers, is the keeping of tradition. Many campers can trace back their relatives who attended the very same camp, and find delight in the idea of shared experiences with their close, or distant, relatives. The long history of summer camps in America stems from an annual trip William Frederick Gunn began to take in 1861 in order to expose young boys to what life in the wilderness has to offer. Originally, the Gunn s theory was that the experience would strengthen not merely muscle, nerve, and self discipline, but developed a masculine character as well. This applied specifically for boys, but camps for girls first appeared in 1902 with the opening of Camp Kehonka, in reflection of the changing attitudes with reference to the role of women in society. Sleepaway camps become a prominent institution in America in the 1900 s that influenced the youth of this country, and continues to do so over one hundred years later, as thousands of summer camps still run every summer, many of which are the same camps that sparked this burgeoning trend. The development of this idiosyncratic principle in American life can be understood through the development of various widespread opinions during, and before, the first sleepaway camp was founded. He was known for laying down the basic roles of experiments for medicine. He was a very smart French man who was known all over the country at the time. I think that Claude Bernard is honorable because he laid down the foundations of experimental medicine. He invented animal testing so we could be safe when trying something new. • 25. Modern Meteorology And Its Effects On The Earth I. Introduction and History Venus and Earth are often called twin planets due to their similar sizes and locations, so Venus might seem like a reasonable interplanetary vacation spot. However, upon arrival, the crushing ninety atmospheres of surface pressure and strongest greenhouse effect in the solar system will render the trip a massive failure (Natural History). Despite their similarities, Earth and Venus differ greatly with regards to their atmospheres, making Earth a much more hospitable environment for human habitation. Even though Earth s atmospheredoes not receive nearly as much appreciation as its oceans or rivers, the layers of gas enveloping Earth are even more essential to the human race, making atmospheric destruction even more alarming. Although modern meteorology is considered inaccurate, and precise information about atmospheric conditions is not always available, understanding of the atmosphere has evolved and improved greatly over the millennia. In antiquity, atmospheric phenomena was interpreted as a supernatural, often reflecting divine opinions of man s actions (Fleming). Ancients thought of rainbows as a pathway from mortal Earth to the Heavens, and observation was limited to the crude human senses. As modern scientific principles became more prevalent in the 16th and 17th centuries, weather was increasingly seen as a physical result of atmospheric conditions. Society has strayed so far away from God that we cannot be guided back home. Yeats begins the poem with the first two lines painting an image of society falling apart and breaking down, one that O Brien refers to as a cultural breakdown. He says, The falcon represents those forces that function productively only when disciplined. In order to maintain structure and to prevent the gyre from widening further, our society needs discipline, otherwise our structure, our faith, or very nature as human beings deteriorates. At this time in our society, our discipline in our faith is gone. Our discipline in our morals and ethics is gone. Lines 3 6 illustrate society s inability to hold together without discipline. With everything falling apart, the need for someone or something to save society becomes prominent. Since society has strayed away from God, the next solution is man as a savior, but with the new age of war and machinery, mankind has lost their ability to save the world. When knowledge is spoken of, it is generally used in terms of education. The extent of education a person has achieved is then what most often determines how much knowledge one has accumulated. Nevertheless, with this definition of intelligencein mind, one might possibly consider the average person to be intelligent. After all, even a person who has never gone to school a day in their life is capable of acquiring knowledge and applying it to some area of their life. Acquiring and applying knowledge could be something as simple as being shown how to mop a floor and then conducting the job using the newly gained know how. What ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Children, for instance, all have different areas in which they excel. A child who excels in school and is listed on the honor roll each term would obviously be considered intelligent. However, a child who is very talented in music but obtains bad marks in school might not be deemed a smart child by the average person; nevertheless, this child would also be considered intelligent. Once a person has an idea of what intelligence is and what it means, a final thought one might consider is what influences are responsible for the different types of intellect. Two possible influences are genetics and the environment in which one lives, with genetics being the strongest influence (Santrock, 2009, pg. 302). Most researchers agree that a person s genetics and environment interact with one another to influence the outcome of that person s intelligence (Santrock, 2009, pg. 302). Genetic influences should be pretty obvious, so there should be no need to explain it; a person s environment on the other hand, can involve several factors. An environment can consist of elements such as a person s school, home, friendships, family relationships, and workplaces. All of these components factor in to influence a person s intelligence. In conclusion, I must say that intelligence can certainly be considered a broad word. It is a word that has varying definitions depending on the source from which the definition comes. Threats And Vulnerabilities Of Itrust When discussing the threats and vulnerabilities of iTrust, it is important to identify the security measures to potentially rectify or prevent additional security issues. The iTrust database application presented quite a few threats and vulnerabilities. One threat discussed is the threat of a facility not having the proper equipment needed to run a secure organization. For proper security, an organization may need to invest in equipment or devices that are more secure out of the box. This means that computers and/or devices that are straight out of the box are deemed to be more secure in comparison to a computer/device that have been used. In many cases, though the computer/device may have been swiped clean, it poses a much greater threat if the system was susceptible to certain vulnerabilities before. In addition, with these secure out of the box systems it is important to verify proper installation. Organizations need to be sure that third party vendors are completely authorized to assure the information that is being installed and updated is secure in the hands of vendors/suppliers. Pol 601 Budget Analysis And Kevin Tenorio Dr. Stoycheva POL 601 Budget Analysis and Financial Management 3 May 2017 Final Exam 1.How has the property tax changed over time for local governments? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the property tax as a revenue source? In response to these questions, make sure to refer to the main principles of taxation (equity, efficiency, adequacy of revenue, political feasibility, and cost of administration), tax and expenditure limitations, as well as the importance of revenue diversification for local government. Historically, property taxes have been the primary source of the local government s income. In fact, approximately 70% of the local governments revenue stems from property taxes (Lee, Johnson, and Joyce, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This could lead to that individual moving to another location, also known as gentrification. Political feasibility is high since it has historically been a consistent source of revenue. Cost of administration would be relatively low since property taxes, in terms of keeping track of properties, is relatively easy because of its tangibility and lack of mobility. With respect to revenue diversification, local governments have attempted to diversify their sources of revenue by implementing one or a combination of these taxes: sales taxes, income taxes, game of chance taxes (gambling, races, lotter, and their derivatives), user charge taxes, and sumptuary taxes (cigarettes, alcohol, and their derivatives) (Lee, Johnson, and Joyce, 2013). In circumstances that affect the primary source of revenue, having access to other sources may serve as a buffer for the local government. However, the problems with these sorts of taxes is uncertainty. Property tax, as stated earlier is the most reliable while income or sales taxes rely on income/ salaried employees and consumption of products, respectively. 2.Explain the major forecasting methods used by governments to forecast revenues and expenditures. To tie these things all together, we watched the movie Never Cry Wolf . This movie showed us that in every type of environment there are connections that are more human than we know. The main character, Tyler, is sent on a mission in the Arctic to study wolves and see if they are responsible for the population decrease of caribou. He meets Rosie, a man who flies him out into the wilderness on his plane. Rosie is very careless and spontaneous with his actions. The wolves habitat was the arctic and one of its niches was that it hunts in a pack. Another niche is that they only have a few cubs like George and Angelica had 2 cubs. Secondly, competition and predation. The text says that every ecosystem has this trait and the movie definitely supports that. In the movie there was competition over food and the predation of the caribou. Third, population density and dispersion. The different packs of wolves moved all around and were dispersed and not very dense at all. Though, the caribou were very dense and traveled all together not just a few in one pack. Fourth, population growth. Like previously mentioned, wolves only have a few cubs so the population growth stays mostly the same. Lastly, the ecological succession. This happened more with the caribou than the wolves because of their decline in population from the wolves. Lastly, in Chapter 16 there were many points about human impact on ecosystems. In Never Cry Wolf , the human impact wasn t huge, but it existed. Ootek implied that killing a wolf is worth a lot of money. Chapter 16 focused on water quality too, which can relate to the movie. If the wolves, or Tyler for that matter, didn t have clean water they wouldn t be able to survive. There are not many people in the Arctic, so there isn t much pollution. The ecological footprint of the wolves was small because they don t have trash ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
