The Yellow Wallpaper, By Charlotte Perkins Stetson
The Yellow Wallpaper , written by Charlotte Perkins Stetson, is a first person narrative told by a
depressed wife, who wrote ten short entries in a secret journal. In the narrative, the wife s physician
and husband diagnose her with temporary nervous depression (Stetson 648). The narrative took
place in the 1900 s when there were minimal treatments to cure nervous depression. The husband
was a dominant physician in the story who believed that bed rest and the minimum amount of daily
activity would cure the wife s state of depression. The failed treatments to cure what was assumed
to be nervous depression later caused the wife to lose her sanity, emotional stability, and mental
focus toward the end of the story. There are a plethora of different depression stages whose
symptoms match the wife s, but the closest type of depression associated with her symptoms would
be postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. If not treated correctly, postpartum depression
can lead to a more severe type of depression called postpartum psychosis, which causes the patient
to have suicidal tendencies and mass hallucination. In researching depression after birth, one may
prove that the wife suffered from postpartum depression, which leads to post partum psychosis; this
explains her symptoms and loss of sanity throughout the narrative; specialists in the field of after
birth depression support this statement.
To comprehend postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, an individual

Analyzing The Poem The Frog Prince
Is a poem without any specific sound easy to understand? Possibly not! In most poems, a poet
uses assonance or consonance to draw special attention to specific parts of the poem. A poem
with assonance or vowels tells the reader about how low or high the sound is, giving them a sense
of the emotion of the character or the poet at that specific part. On the other hand, consonance
determines the friction or tone of a word or line, telling the reader when to slow down or when to
read faster. Assonance and consonance helps to create rhymein poems; a rhyme is a repeated sound
at the end of each line that unifies the structure of the poem. In the poem, The Frog Prince by
Robert Pack, assonance and consonance are repeated to create a smooth rhyme.... Show more

Pitch is defined as the quality of the sound. He uses words and sounds with same pitch at the end
of every line to form a unified structure to easily catch the reader s consideration. For instance,
the first four lines end with surprise , frame , body , and name (lines 1 4, p735) and all of these
words have the sound of se (ee), me (ee), y (ee), me (ee) at the end. Since e has a high pitch,
these words are very quick to pronounce and they create a unified structure. However, line 5,
The joy she must have felt to learn , disrupts the unity of the structure, because it has an ugh
sound in it which is low pitch it doesn t rhyme well with the first four lines. To recapture, the
reader s attention Pack ends line 6 and 8 with phases such as wonder and under. These words
create a rough er or rh sound which indicates a major and drastic change in the princess life.
Moreover, line 10, 12, and 14 end with a heavy dah sound. For example, it takes a lot of energy to
pronounce the following words: read , bed , and said. Overall, the dah sound beautifully executes
the dramatic shift in mood, from the frog s transformation into a prince to the princess mother s
confrontation of the prince and princess in the

Cognitive Style And Cognitive Style
Cognitive style, also known as thinking style, refers to the customary patterns of behaviors which
often emerge in cognitive process. Cognitive style is not significantly related to the ability of
thinking reasoning among students, mostly formed by attitude and expression during the process
of perception, memory and problem solving. Cognitive styleis individual differences in the
cognitive process with great varieties, such as field independent style and field dependent style,
reflective style and impulsive style, and wholist style and analytic style.

Wholist style tends to respond to cognitive task by holistic strategy. They are used to perceiving
material from the holistic perspective. There is a long span in reading comprehension. According to
research, English majors in the vocabulary learning, guess words in context. The reading material
provides them with information to help them guess the meaning. By students knowledge,
experience, common sense, contrast and analysis, they can guess the word s meaning. In the
research, giving English major an unknown word, at the same time, letting them read materials,
thus, they can guess the meaning by relating the word to the context, sentences, clauses or
paragraphs. This is an effective strategy to master words and vocabulary. Analytic style tends to
pay more attention to the details and procedures. They can establish clear and identifiable
formation parts. That is the typical feature of analytical style. In the vocabulary learning, English
majors recognize word parts. For example, they are given words, and they must break into parts.

Branched Chain Amino Acid As A Supplement For Long...
Branched Chain Amino Acid as a Supplement for Long Duration Exercise
Introduction
Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) are composed of three essential amino acids including
leucine, isoleucine, and valine. They are unique in that they are predominantly metabolized outside
of the liver in the skeletal muscle. BCAAs make up 35 40% of the amino acid pool in the body and
exist in high concentrations in skeletal muscle tissue (Shimomura et al, 2006). While the
supplemental dosage is dependent upon on the type of exercise,, body composition, and dietary
intake, a standard dosage of the combination of BCAAs is 20g, of leucine, isoleucine, and valine.
Other ratio combinations are available as well as individual supplement products of leucine and
isoleucine. BCAA supplementation is often taken before, during, and after exercise. It has been
observed that BCAAs potentiate the effects of exercise by their anabolic processes on protein
metabolism by increasing the rate of muscle protein synthesis and decreasing the rate of muscle
protein breakdown (Karlsson et al., 2004). Moreover, it has been theorized that BCAAs may
improve performance, reduce muscle fatigue, and feelings of muscle soreness.
Review of Literature
Various studies have demonstrated that BCAAs promote activation of protein synthesis, reduced
muscle degradation, and reduce perceived feelings of muscle fatigue. All human studies reviewed
used randomized, double blind, within subjects cross over design conducted

Why Did Communism Fail
Communism
Communism is a totalitarian government that is supposed to mean complete and total equality, but
at times in history this type of government became too oppressive causing the popularity to decline.
Communism was created by Karl Marx. Karl Marx was born in 1818 in Trier Prussia. Marx
started writing for the liberal democratic newspaper, which was banned for being too radical
(History.com staff). He used the newspaper to express his political views however most political
figures did not want to give up power or give the working class ideas to unionize. Therefore Later
Marx was expelled from Prussia because of the articles he published. Once in England he was
drafted to write for the Communist Manifesto (History.com staff). In 1848 Marx left Belgium

One of those reasons being that in a communist country there would be no was to regulate free
markets which would have worked as a guide for planning production. Another problem was how
oppressive Russia became (Bettina Greaves). The oppressive nature of communism made the
government system decrease in popularity. The oppressive government soon resulted in starvation
during the 1920s and 30s (Bettina Greaves). However communism didn t completely fail, in fact
there are still communists countries today like Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, China, and North Korea (Matt

I Define The Nature Of Judgmental Essay
As an observer from the east, Chen Cheng had many preconceived values granted by his
biography. Inevitably, these values are recognizable in his portraits of the Timurid world. In five
major aspects did Chen Cheng appear to be judgmental. I define the nature of judgmental as shown
by negative, or occasionally, positive, semantic fields characterized by the usages of adjectives and
descriptive sentences. Every case of being judgmental hints at Chen Cheng s unique background
that tells the readers both about the Confucian tradition of Chinaand about the daily scene of the
Timurid society.
Chen Cheng was harsh in criticizing the necessary protocols performed by the ordinary inhabitants.
He wrote:
Every occasion when people meet, [they] do not display any protocol, only bowing slightly and
almost invisibly to each other.... If two haven t met for a while, or when people get to know each
other for the first time, they perform so called advanced protocol, kneeling down one of the legs....
When there is feast or gathering, ruler and his subjects, males and females, the elderly and the
young all sit in a circular podium without a sense of shame.
Chen Cheng obviously evaluated the Timurid social scene as barbarian and rustic. Even though
people greet each other by some sort of protocol, Chen Cheng naturally disdained it as if there was
nothing carried out. Under the Chinese imperial examination system, the textbook materials were

Beowulf Epic Hero
An epic poem is a long writing that tells about a hero s journeys and battles with gods and
mythical creatures. An epic hero is someone with all of the characteristics valued in that time
period. In the epic Beowulf, recorded around 1000 AD, a noble named Beowulf fought monster for
the glory and admiration of his victories to be known throughout time. Beowulfis an epic hero
because of his descent into the underworld, his super human strength, and his vengefulness.
Clearly, Beowulf is an epic hero because of his decent into the underworld. Although Beowulf
did not descend into the true fiery underworld of hell, he did descend into the deep water of
Grendel s Mother s lair where no man has been before. The epic, Beowulf, says, For hours he
sank through the waves, Cantos 22, line 367 368. This shows how far he had to go to get to
Grendel s mother s lair. Beowulf had no choice but to go to the lair and kill her because she
killed Hrothgar s faithful servant. Beowulf also says, As all words ended he leaped into the lake,
would not wait for anyone s answer, Cantos 22, line 364 366. This means that Beowulf was the

Beowulf is stronger than any normal man. The epic, Beowulf, says, That shepherd of evil,

Beowulf is so strong that he does not even use weapons or armor to fight many types of
monsters. When he faced Grendel, Beowulf used his strength to rip Grendel s arm from his
socket. Not only was Beowulf able to rip Grendel s arm off, but he also used a huge sword that
was made by giants to kill Grendel s mother. No mortal man could even imagine of wielding such a

Immigration Policies Of The 1920s
The 1890s to the 1920s was the first time that the federal government was taking a real stand and
control over immigration policies. It also saw the two greatest waves of immigration in the country
s history. War, poverty, political turmoil, social upheaval, food shortages, lack of available jobs and
more prompted people from foreign countries to move to the United Statesbecause it was the land
of dreams and prosperity. After the depression of the 1890s immigrationjumped from 3.5 million to
9 million in a ten year period. By 1900, New York City had as many Irish residents as Dublin and
more Italians than any city outside Rome and more Poles than any city except Warsaw. It had more
Jews than any other city in the world, as well as large amount of Slavs, Lithuanians, Chinese, and
Scandinavians (Collier). The government began to limit these new immigrants. From 1882 until
1943 most Chinese immigrants were barred from entering the United States under the Chinese
Exclusion Act, the nation s first law to ban immigration by race or nationality. In 1892, Ellis Island
was opened in New York evaluate immigrants before allowing them to enter the United States. On
the West Coast, Angel Island, a similar immigrant station opened near San Francisco. World
economies slowed and other problems occurred that caused people to become desperate for work

Amontillado Irony
Oh, The Irony
Darkness, confused irony all words used to describe the works of Edger Allen Poe. War, Honor,
and Victory, these words describe the war stories told by war novelist Tim O Brien. Both writers
and good ones at that, but these two have differences and similarities in their writing. The Cask
of Amontillado and the Sweetheart of Song Tra Bong both scream Irony. As the two stories
progress there are similarities, but also differences that define the two authors and their stories.
Two of stories that let you see these similarities are The Cask of Amontillado Poe and The
Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong O Brien. Irony is a big factor in both stories as someone reads

Montresor kills Fortunato by bringing him into a dark cavern and pushes him off the ledge.
Fossie kills Mary Anne by bringing her into Vietnam. Although Mary Anne does not die, her life
changes and becomes a savage of Vietnam. The ending of these stories are both dark, but in
different ways. This is what makes comparing Poe to O Brien tricky. Poe is known around the
world for his horror stories but in The Cask of Amontillado he uses the character Montresor to
provide insight on what s going on in the story. Montresor is the narrator as well as a main
character. As a reader continues reading The Cask of Amontillado they start to see a lot of irony
in what s going on, and as Dr. Charles W. Carter from The Writing for the Arts and Humanities In
The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe, Montresor is out for revenge. Poe s Gothic story
might lead the reader to believe that Montresor is diabolical and calculating. Montresor s only
concern appears to be exacting revenge with impunity. Montresor never clarifies why Fortunato
deserves punishment. The only clue Montresor offers is that Fortunato causes him a thousand
injuries until [venturing] upon insult (Poe 1). As a result, Montresor plans to bury Fortunato
alive. Unwittingly, Fortunato becomes a sacrificial lamb being led to slaughter. Montresor
carries out each detail while he smiles in the face of his victim. Montresor doesn t smile at the
thought of Fortunato s immolation because of his viciousness. Montresor smiles because the
sacrifice of Fortunato he believes brings him a great reward. Fortunato is merely a symbolic
character of a despised self in the unconscious of Montresor (Sweet Jr. 332). Fortunato is
ironically the mirror self of Montresor (Sweet Jr. 332). Montresor s desire to bury Fortunato alive
paints the psychological portrait of repression (Sweet Jr. 332). The burial of

The Ethical Theories Of The Ethics
There are eight major ethical theories the ones that were focused on in the video were
deontological and utilitarian. The deontological theory is the sense of obligation, that someone
feels that it their morally duty to do the right thing. The utilitarian theory is that people act and
behave so that they will produce happiness for the greatest number of people. These two
different ethical theories are ways that people behave and think is morally correct. In the video
the professor talked about the two ethical theories and how the choices that people make can
connect to these two theories. The professor said that the utilitarian theory mantra is that good
makes something right, and that these people are results oriented. The deontological theory
mantra is that right makes something good, and that these people are motive oriented. The big
question is what is the morally right thing to do? consequential moral reasoning says that
someone should not kill an innocent person to say others. I think people should always try to
avoid hurting other people, but if you could save five people and only one person die, would you
do it? For example in the first situation where there are two ways the train can go with workers on
it, with no brakes, and it can either hit five workers and save the one, or save five, and kill one
worker by going down another track. The train driver has to decide quickly what to choose. Either
way someone has to die, should it be five people or one? I

popular imagination and has become part of the world s shared mythology. King Arthur was born
somewhere in the misty region where history and imagination meet (Gale Student Resources). The

Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico Essay
One World Essay: Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico
Scientific Reasoning:
The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico is a human problem, like most other disasters. What this
means is that once the place thrived and was ecologically balanced, but we tipped the balance
slightly and wrecked havoc upon the environment. It has been noted to occur since the 1950 s and
is ongoing. The reason that this dead zone occurs is because of a phenomenon known as
eutrophication. Eutrophication is when there is an excessive amount of nutrients in a body of water
and it causes an abundance of plants to grow. In this case the nearby farms had been using nitrogen
in their fertilizers. The nitrogen got carried into the ocean through rain and other forms of ... Show

Some species might thrive in conditions that other struggle to survive. For example some predators
might need more oxygen then a smaller prey. With less predators being around, there is a huge
burst in prey, which can eat up all of the bacteria. When the bacteria all die, the prey can t find
any food and all die out. This causes a very unreliable food chain and can be dangerous to live in.
In hypoxic zones what tends to happen is that marine life such as fish or shrimp die out quickly
while the smaller organisms live. This causes whole species to die out leaving a dominance of
gelatinous creatures such as jellyfish to thrive in. Economic Problems:
There are many economical problems due to the dead zone ranging from fisheries going out of
business to illnesses. The economical problems have paid their toll on nearby fishers whom in
total have paid over 10 billion US dollars to repair the problem. Sadly though, no matter how
much they pay, the problem is still on going. The gulf s massive fishing industry is trying to
focus its efforts on the parts that have been affected in an attempt to save their sea. According to
many sources, EPA views this problem as unimportant and hasn t helped yet. The reason that it is
so hard to come to an agreement is because there is no solution that pleases everyone. Right now
the farmers up north of the gulf are having an easy time because of easy and cheap waste disposal
while downstream the fishers are

Ford Model T Essay
The ford Model T was the first car mass produced in the U.S during the early 1900 s. The Model
T had a 4 cylinder 20 horsepower engine that could reach speeds of about 40 miles an hour. They
come in different colors, but they were mostly produced in black. They were relativley simple, and
reliable cars. It changed the factor of automobiles and transportation because people went from
horse and buggy to full out automobiles. Henry fordwas the first person in the U.S to use what s
called the assembly lineand it worked well to his advantage. The ford model t production line and
other competing motor companies are different as ford had a different way of of building cars
using assembly lines, while other companies did not use this method. The inventor of the Ford
Model T, Henry ford, Produced the first ever model t on October 1st, 1908. On this date, henry
did not realize how well business was going to be for him. From this date, until May 26, 1927
Henry ford produced over 15,000,000 model Ts, which was unheard of at the time. Because of
the method of creating these vehicles, called the assembly line that you see today, he was able to
ramp up production and sucess. The assembly line didn t start until 1913, when Henry soon

them at a faster rate. The starting price of the model T was 850$, about 21,000$ today. The
demand for this vehicle went incredibly high, and Ford was able to lower the price of his car
because they were in such high demand to around 300$. Ford s Motive was that he wanted to build

Why The Outcasts Judge People
Difference isn t always a bad thing, it s just unordinary. That s why it s an instinct to
immediately judge people, whether it be good or bad, when they appear different. Good
judgements aren t that easy to achieve, though, so people tend to go in the direction as other
normal people so they don t attract attention.A direct example of this is when Hazel tries to
convince George to take out some balls from his bags. He refuses, only because he is aware that
there is consequences to taking them out. There would be a fine of two thousand dollars. Along
with that, he would also spend two years in jail for every ball taken out. The balls in this example,
represent the thoughts or actions a person wants to do. They re held captive in the bag that... Show

Some might argue that the restrictions the government put on society is great. Uniqueness
should not exist in their Utopia . If everyone is forced to be the same, and that different levels of
capability should not be allowed. Therefore, no one s self esteem would be lowered knowing
that other people have advantages in their physical appearance, their intelligence, physical
ability, etc. No one would be jealous that they don t have what others do, like when George
mentions the ballerinas. He says And their faces were masked, so that no one, seeing a free and
graceful gesture or a pretty face, would feel like something the cat drug in. At the beginning of
the story, it states that everyone has the same intelligence, and later shows that George, who is
above average in intelligence, isn t allowed to use it. It may seem that this would be perfect.
Everyone has the same intelligence, so no one feels bad that they are not as smart as others. It
seems that this society is based on the literal idea that everyone should be equal.. Although it is, it
s not as perfect as other people would assume. Equality doesn t mean that everyone will succeed.
Giving equality to everyone means that everyone would be given the same materials, whether it is
beneficial or not. On the other hand, equity, would be more perfect. Equity is when everyone is
given the required materials based on their needs. It s not equality, and may appear

Reading And Reflecting On Michael Lewis The Big Short
Reading and Reflecting on Michael Lewis The Big Short For Commercial Bank Management
class I read The Big Short and reflected on its contents. In this paper, I will describe my reading
of the book and show how it relates to this class. I devoted about a week to this project reading,
reflecting and writing. During this activity, I kept notes on what I was reading so that I could
better understand exactly what happened in terms of concepts like collateralized debt obligations,
etc. But what most interested me about this activity was the human element of the story. Lewis
begins The Big Short by telling the story of Meredith Whitney, whose expose on Citigroup in 2007
began a series of Wall Street unraveling. Lewis contacted her to find... Show more content on

Eisman is like the little reminder that pops up along the way to let Macbeth know that he is not
on the right track: it is called a conscience and Macbeth finally squashes it out of himself.
Eisman, Lewis shows, has been the voice of conscience on Wall Street for some time, admitting
to the unconscionable whether the head of a large U.S. brokerage firm or the president of a
large Japanese real estate firm that their own dealings fail to make any sense. In the world, there
are two types of people, those who say yes and everything else you want to hear and those who
say the truth. Eisman, however, is the latter type. Vinny Daniel is another. Hired by Arthur
Andersen, his job as an accountant was to account audit the big Wall Street firms, in other
words. In theory, that is what his job was supposed to be. In reality, his job was to rubber stamp
and approve all that such firms set before him. There is regulation in Wall Street. It is just easily
gotten around. People like Vinny Daniel are the ones who clog up the works: He concluded that
there was effectively no way for an accountant assigned to audit a giant Wall Street firm to figure
out whether it was making money or losing money (Lewis 11).

Comparing The Epics And The Epic Heroes
Comparison of the Epics In every epic, there are common themes that present themselves
throughout the story, such as war. The epics Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and The Mahabharata, share
similar characteristics in terms of their strength, values, and journeys. In each of the epics that will
be discussed, there is the occurrence of fighting for honor and to have a legacy. The epic heroes
follow many of the guidelines that Joseph Campbellhas written in his book Herowith a Thousand
Faces. Joseph Campbell believed that the stages of a hero were to have a call to adventure, he is
introduced in his ordinary world, he is hesitant and may not want to fulfill his mission, the
person is encouraged by someone old and wise, the person is committed to their journey, there
are tests and people to help the hero, the hero faces his last, challenging quest, he potentially
faces death, the hero survives his journey and is rewarded in some way, he has a journey back to
his home and could face more danger, the hero is transformed by his experience, and the hero
brings back treasures. Gilgamesh shows the characteristics of hero according to Joseph Campbell
because he faces many challenging quests in particular his most dangerous is going to the king
and queen of (idk) (where) to find the secret of immortality, Gilgamesh survives his journey back
from (where), Gilgamesh is transformed because he becomes less shellfish, on the journey home
he could have possibly been in danger because of the deadly

The Studio System In The Golden Age Of Hollywood
The continuing success of the film industry and the subsequent ticket sale receipts proved that the
American public was interested in motion pictures and willing to pay for it. The introduction of
sound and an ever increasing production value was putting customers into seats. The idea was to
get the public out of the house and into the theater, give them what they wanted and thus help them
forget the Depression and the anxieties caused by the events leading up to the Second World War
(Barsam 427). What better way to make the most money out of movies than to control all aspects
of the industry, thus making money each step of the way. This was the studio system in the golden

Richard Wagner Characteristics
We are still waiting for the man who can compose and write a genuine opera. (Furness 14). That
man was Wilhelm Richard Wagner he was known for his operas and other compositions which
influenced many other composers. Wagner wrote many amazing operas, compositions, and poetic
lyrics. Some think he wasn t so important, but some even think he was one of the best holding him
up to Beethoven for his compositions (Furness 7). Wagner s best composition from his career is a
composition called Der Rings Des Nibelungen, which is a composition that is eighteen hours long
and four operas which had reoccurring themes connecting them all together. Firstly, Richard Wagner
was born on May 22 ,1813 in Leipzig, Germany. Wagner had eight siblings, five sisters and three
brothers. He never had much talent in music when he was attending a school in Dresden,
Germany. He played the piano a horrible way and his teacher told him he wouldn t be much
because he couldn t manage to play properly (Newman 46). He had trouble understanding the
terms of the music as a child he knew what they use where he just didn t know how they were
announced. He also struggled in his life when it came to see who his father was even some
would say Richard s facial features resembled his father Carl Friedrich Wagner who passed away
just months after he was born, but an actor named Ludwig Geyer who married Wagner s mother
was on the list of whether he was the father or not. While the only thing they compared Richard

Masculinity of the Romantic American Male in Cooper s Last of the Mohicans and Irving s
Legend of Sleepy Hollow
James Fenimore Cooper s Last of the Mohicans and Washington Irving s Legend of Sleepy Hollow
are valuable examples of literary heavyweights of the Romantic era, but in addition, can also be
used to chart sociological changes within the male gender during pre Romantic and Romantic years.
But because neither Cooper nor Irving s works should be distanced from their cultural backdrops
when considering the socially reflective nature of their work, exploring basic historical conditions
surrounding the changing concepts of masculinity can serve as a useful move.
Masculinity is primarily a social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Rotundo, the ideal man was one who ruled as head of his household, believed in the
crucial concept of duty, and upheld stern Puritan religious of morality and social behavior (as the
pleasant, mild mannered, devoted man of the community ). This good man image seems to
coincidentally parallel the English patriarchal gentleman of the seventeenth century.
Social and economic changes around 1820 to 1860 stimulated the Commercial Period, which
produced two distinct spheres of influence: the business world of men and the private domestic
world of women (Grace 10). Instead of the home being a means of production, industry s influence
was being felt for the first time, and with its arrival, men became connected to the public realm
more clearly, and conversely, women to the private realm (10).
But some of the changes also stemmed from politics of the day. At the time of the Revolutionary
War, political upheaval pitched American sons against American fathers, and England s social
influence over her angered citizens began to wane (Manhood 18). Michael Kimmel, author of
Manhood in America: A Cultural History, comments on fledgling America s disenchantment with
British culture:

Relevance For The Post 2015 Mdgs Agenda
CONFLICT AND DEVELOPMENT
Relevance for the post 2015 MDGs agenda
Conflict is a relatively new concept in development, and the relation between the two is complex
and remains not entirely understood. However, and given that the correlation among insecurity and
development is clear, there is a general consensus in arguing that development cannot happen
without security. In 2015, end of the Millennium Development Goals cycle, fragile and conflict
affected countries are lagging far behind other developing countries in meeting these goals. Thus,
the success of the MDGs is threatened and it depends, to a great extent, in the way conflict is
addressed. We do believe that including a security related target in the post 2015 agenda is essential

Although today related to negative outcomes, war has not always had the same impact. Indeed,
many authors such as Tilly (1985) and Bates (2010) have analyzed how conflict led to the creation
of States in Europe during the 14th and 15th century. According to them, the presence of wars and
the need for protection raised because rural areas became wealthier as their population density
decreased. This demographic change was mainly due to the progress of manufacturing and its
consequent urbanization. To be successful at war, monarchs needed new sources of capital that
were obtained through taxation, leading to the creation of a more complex bureaucratic system
necessary to collect these taxes. Of course, individuals resisted to taxation, so monarchs had to
bargain with citizens and concede some power in return for taxes. This way, monarchs gradually
limited their own power, igniting the state building process, and laying the groundwork for future
democracy and growth. However, Europe s conditions of state formation were not replicated in
developing countries later, due to a radically different context. Amid the Cold War, rulers in less
developed countries could obtain their resources through foreign aid,

My Papa s Waltz And For My Daughter
Throughout the second half of this semester, we have read poems that all had some type of
comparison. It may not have been an obvious comparison, but most of these poems had at least
one. In the poems, My Papa s Waltz and For My Daughter, both describe a beloved family
member. They both put in clear detail of the positive and negative things about said familymember.
These poems both describe someone misunderstanding or mistreating another. It is amazing how
each of these poems can describe or be told about a certain problem and how they all can relate in
some type of way. The reason behind that is because everyone no matter who they are all goes
through the same situations as the next person. Whether it is, gender, age, religion, race or even
education, there is something that can connect one to another. In the poem, My Papa s Waltz, by
Theodore Roethke, the narrator is the small boy mentioned in the second line. He thoroughly
describes every little thingabout what his father is doing; this shows the large amount of imagery
in the poem. This connection is obviously between a boy and his father; hence the title of the
poem. Speaking of the title of the poem, it is exactly what is named. A waltz is a song written in
Вѕ time, this is normally a very intimate type of dance (Shmoop). There may be a danced being
performed, but do not be fooled. Eventually, we realize that this poem is a lot worse that what most

New South Wales Public Education System
In 1866 New South Wales enacted the Public Schools Act that aimed to address government
spending on education, resulting in government schools receiving priority over denominational
schools, and providing access to education for the growing number of communities across the
colony . The Catholics opposed this move as it was hostile to the their belief in their own system of
educationand Catholic puritans helped fuel the fire of sectarianism, which continued to make state
aid for church run schools a highly controversial issue . However, times were changing as by the
1870s, in New South Wales, up to sixty per cent of Catholic schoolchildren attended state schools .
Conflict escalated again in 1879 when the new Catholic Archbishop, Vaughan, denounced the state
schools of New South Wales describing them as seed plots of future immorality, infidelity and
lawlessness and accused them of squeezing very gradually and almost imperceptibly the Catholic
faith out of Catholic people. In response the Parkes government enacted the Public Instruction Act
of 1880, which resulted in primary education becoming nominally compulsory, cheap, widespread,
and removed all state aid to denominational schools . Again the Catholics responded negatively to
the decision, which aided in preserving the Catholic identity, although this came at the cost of
making themselves a distinctive sub culture in the Australian community . Despite this, Henry
Parkes, premier of New South Wales, gave a speech in 1885, and instead of condemning the
Catholics for being different,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Romans which is a letter from Paul by reveals answers to important questions and is able to supply
us with information on multiple topics. In chapters 1 8 Paul discusses the fundamentals and the
foundation of Christian faith. Looking for things through the text in the Romans such as (1) the
natural world, (2) human identity, (3) human relationships, and (4) culture.
The first thing is the natural world. In the natural world it is full of sin, murder and crime are being
committed even back in Romans. During Paul s days was full of sin. We see sinners worship
the creation but to the creator. There were sins that were being committed back then that are still
being committed till this day. When reading Romans first off it was a little bit confusing at first
but after rereading it it started to become more clear that the Romans in the past worshiped many
gods. They were trying to gain the love and hopes from the people in their town. The writer of
Romans Paul wanted to cover this due to he believed he saw the issues within the Roman society
and so he addressed it with the church. He decided to point out the sins and make it more to the
graceful to the people and the church. In Romans Paul distinguished human identity as being the
saved and the unsaved, and the Jews. Paul talks about whether humanity is the law or not. Paul
states people may or may not have sinned according to the law but

The Powder the Glory is a documentary that tells the story of two exceedingly successful women
entrepreneurs, Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. Both these women were immigrants to the
US and having started with nothing at all, have been instrumental in creating a whole new beauty
and health industry. When they started their businesses, make up was only worn by prostitutes and
businesses were run by men. They transformed women by changing the way women looked at
themselves and built successful businesses out of it. They both had operations in most major cities

Then in 1929, came the Great Depression. The cosmetics industry grew despite the depression and
Arden and Rubinstein continued to try and outdo each other. People still bought cosmetics because
they felt better buying whatever little bit of luxury that they could. This was also a time when
people felt that more expensive the product, the better it might be. This helped Arden and
Rubinstein create a huge margin for their products. In the 1930s, the Roosevelt Administration
levied 10% tax on luxury goods including cosmetics, but women still continued to buy make up.
After the Second World War, the cosmetics industry matured and became more competitive with
Revlon and Avon targeting younger women and becoming powerhouses. This was the time when
Arden and Rubinstein should have realized that younger women of the new generation didn t want
to be associated with their products as these were products that were used by their mothers. Both
the companies failed to evolve at that time and lost the plot with respect to business development.

Art At The Blanton Museum Of Art
On September 19, 2015 I visited the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas in Austin,
where I observed The Raising of Lazarus by Joachim Wtewael in the European Old Masters gallery.
The piece recreates the biblical narrative of Lazarus resurrection and demonstrates the exorbitant
style of Mannerism popular during the 16th century. Wtewael establishes the significance of the
Christ with his application of form through the use of unrealistic contortions of the people, the lines
following the exaggerated limbs of the congregation, and the abundant use of the colorredon almost
every article of clothing. In the foreground of the painting, a crowd of people gather around the
recently resurrected Lazarus. There are roughly fifteen individuals in the crowd in a variety of
postures, many of which are contorted and turned away. Furthermore, their forms are painted with
considerable emphasis on the way that their respective limbs are bent and twisted which
consequently creates a peculiar confined space in which much of the content and action is
contained. The outstretched arms and warped bodies of the figures create two diagonal lines which
cross over each other in the center of the painting, leading the eye to the primary subject and the
focal point, Lazarus. To the left of him is a younger woman looking outwards, contrasting with the
focused inward gaze of the crowd. Additionally, the same women mentioned previously also dons a
striking white garment similar to that of

The White Witch By James Weldon Johnson

The White *itch And back behind those smiling lips, / And down within those laughing eyes,...
/ The shadow of the panther lurks, / The spirit of the vampire lies (25, 26, 29, 30). The
supernatural poem The White Witch by James Weldon Johnson gives us an insight to what lay
behind the curtains during the Harlem Renaissance. The poem takes a real life situation of the
era, white women luring black men to their death via false blame, and portrays it as a fairy tale.
Using symbolism, white women are represented by an attractive and powerful witch who takes the
black men as prey to portray the message of how deceiving and evil white women were to falsely
blame African Americanmen of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Johnson s description of the witch s features became the most significant facet of the story,
especially the significance attaches to color symbolism: Her lips are like carnations red, / Her
face like new born lilies fair, / Her eyes like ocean waters blue... (13 15). J. Johnson uses the
power of imagery here by depicting the evil witch as a shockingly beautiful lady. He utilizes
similes to convey that she is gentle looking and captivating. With this image in mind, Johnson also
makes it clear that looks can be deceiving:
The great white witch you have not seen?
...Like nursery children you have looked
For ancient hag and snaggled tooth;
But no, not so; the witch appears
In all the glowing charms of youth. (7, 9, 10, 11, 12) The evil force of women in this time does
not appear to look like what you would assume. She is youthful, not old and snaggled toothed.
Through this we can see that the theme is the portrayal of a black man that has fallen victim to the
witch s power, and is now warning his brothers and friends. White women that had power over
black men, and even black women, abused their privileges and the people in the lower class were
the ones affected. In analyzation, the connotation aspect of this poem is how women during this
time, specifically white women, used their power over black men and their freedom. Although the

Introduction: Mr. A (pseudonyms) is a 39 years old male of Indian origin. He is married and
lives with his wife and a five years child. He is full time self employed individual with no known
health issues. Mr. A initially experienced constipation, blood in stool and abdominal pain which
prompted Mr. A to visit his general practitioner (GP). Then he was referred to specialist and went
through a series of medical examinations, blood tests, imaging procedures, and hospital
admissions that were required to eliminate the other possible causes and diseases related to these
symptoms. It was awkward and unpleasant to deal with the symptoms for him. He felt weak and
started to lose weight. Eventually, Mr. A was diagnosed with crohn s disease (CD) a type of
inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) in 2012. IBD is a collective group of disorders that are chronic

attacks the digestive system. Crohn s disease can occur in any part of the intestine and ulcerative

Generally, when people first hear the word holocaust or genocide they immediately think of the
Jewish holocaust during World War II. Ever since then people have said that another holocaust
can never happen again, that it s evil, disgusting, horrible and so on. However it has happened
again, it s happened again many times. Mass genocide was not eliminated in 1945 when Jews
were liberated, it is still happening in our world all around us but just as during WWII people
have looked the other way. Such as with the Cambodian Genocide that took place over a course of
four years from 1975 until 1979.
This period of time started to spiral down hill in 1975 when the government in Cambodia was
overthrown by the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge was a small

The Inner City Of Los Angeles
Growing up in the inner city of Los Angeles taught me many things; make sure you re inside
before the street lights come on, never wear all red or blue, and make sure you get a good
education so that one day you can leave the inner city behind. I was fortunate enough to have
both a mother and a father who stressed the importance of excelling academically because
attending an inner city, LA county, public school did not instill a love of academics in myself or
my peers. Our teachers had checked out, the curriculum was not inspiring or relatable, and
everyday there was yet another fight happening during recess. As time went on I witnessed my
classmates and I take completely different paths. The strong support system I had at home
proved effective. As I went on to go to college, many of my peers dropped out, the dismal state
of our public school system had clearly failed them. During my undergraduate studies, the stories
of my old classmates did not leave my mind. I remained deeply intrigued with the struggles of
inner city people of color and the mobility they are granted. I began to volunteer at ArtStart, a non
profit program that taught previously incarcerated youth the art of poetry, and I was immediately
intrigued by the stories of what had led these children to a life of crime at such a young age. In
these students, I saw my childhood friends who had went down the same path many years before
and I wanted to know why; where did the disconnect between the school system

Analysis Of The Mid 70 S
The mid 70 s became the climax in allowance for different family situation. Unlike the 50 s and
60 s where women played minor roles as housewives, the 70 s presented a new kind of role for
females: single moms. Sitcoms such as The Partridge Family, focused on the mother figure and
displayed the roles she undertook as both a motherand a father. Comparing The Partridge Familyto a
modern sitcoms such as Ben Kate, these shows share a male characters that fills in the father
figure gap and the struggle both mothers face as single parents. On the other hand, they differ in
the child s rebellion due to their void in a paternal figure. The show may centralise on a single
mother, however, there will always be a male figure present to take the place of the father.
Rabinovitz notes that in spite of the sitcom revolving around a single mom, a male figure,
whether if it was a relative of the mother or an unsuitable mate for the mother, is incorporated into
the show as a male representation for the child. In The Partridge Family, the band s manager was
the closest father figure the five children had. In Ben Kate, Ben is the father figure of his niece
Maddie. How these characters fulfil their father figure duties are similar as well. In the Partridge
Family, the children spend most of the time with their mom and Reuben Kincaid, the manager of
the band. Although Ruben regularly clashed with the children because of his grumpy attitude, he
took on the paternal role of being present

Progressive Reform
The rise of modern American liberalism throughout the history
Having been born in Europe in the epoch of Renaissance and Reformation, the liberalism has
become an inevitable part of the United States. When someone and somewhere talks about the
liberal movement, everybody will mention the American liberalism, which has undergone several
stages of its development and transformed into modern liberalism. This liberalism allows the United
States to be one of the most powerful states in the world.
Since its origin, the United States did not know different political philosophy but liberalism in its
democratic constitutional form. The liberal doctrine in the United States was influenced by some
factors the impact of the American Revolution ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It claims on different freedoms of people despite their gender, race, and age. Also, one of the
principles of American liberalism is the separation of state and church. The main aim of
liberalism is to promote the general welfare of the American citizens. However, sometimes the
liberalism was too controversial. For example, the involvement of the United States to the wars
violated the rights of people. Speaking about the WWI, George William Norris wrote that war
brings no prosperity to the great mass of common and patriotic citizens. It increases the cost of
living of those who toil and those who already must strain every effort to keep soul and body
together. War brings prosperity to the stock gambler on Wall Street to those who are already in
possession of more wealth than can be realized or enjoyed (149).
Such eager of American people to live in a free society is well understandable and can be
explained by several factors as well. The ultimate goal of the American social ideal is equality of
opportunity and individual initiative. These are not born of bureaucracy. This ideal is the
expression of the spirit of our people. This ideal obtained at the birth of Republic. It was the ideal
of Lincoln; it is the ideal upon which the nation has risen to unparalleled greatness (205). To
another word, it is a heritage of all generations, which made their

Ernest Hemingway
In A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, the author used very short, choppy language that was
not typical for the time period of the book. Despite the fact that he did not use long traditional
sentences, Hemingway still managed to produce detailed passages with plenty of imagery to help
the reader immerse themselves into the story. By illustrating settings, characterizing characters, and
describing their feelings. Surprisingly, it was still possible to create detailed passages even with
Ernest Hemingways choppy and staccato writingstyle. Ernest Hemingway was one of the first
great authors to use short language and still be descriptive. There was a great example of this in
the text when he wrote, The piece of timber swung in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the first secondary characters introduced was Catherine Barkley: Miss Barkley was quite
tall. She wore what seemed to me to be a nurse s uniform, was blond and had tawny skin and gray
eyes. (Hemingway 18) Using his concise wording, Hemingway still managed to create a
descriptive passage that made it clear to the reader exactly what Miss Barkley looked like. Even
though Hemingway uses such plain language, it is not necessarily a bad thing. A professor at Penn
State University wrote that Hemingway was one of the few authors that could write such detailed
passages with such straightforward words when he said, Nevertheless his powers of description are
not diminished by his taking care to choose such simple language. (Markley) When done right, this
writing style can be effective and sometimes better than more drawn out descriptive

How Did The Medici Have Too Much Power
The Medici had too much power. Why. Because, they want to become power for themselves. The

would used their time wisely and their choice through a man would of raised into the country in

have to follow the rule. The Medici wants to build more to his country and for him to become

sell you an indulgence which would remit your sins, it would cleanse your sins ( The Medici

think those papers were really important to others people that may had work with the Pope. This
is just similar to The Inquisition , they had consisted of the powerful and into their agents to

France s Bill Of Rights Document Analysis
Freedom and justice are what England s Bill of Rights, France s Declaration of Rights for Men,
and America s Bill of Right all have in common. All three countries did not like the rules or
leaders at the time thus, revolutions against them occurred. Then, these documents were created
because people wanted change. The first of the three is England s Bill of Rights which inspired
America s Declaration of Independence, which lead to France s Declaration of Right for Men.
Furthermore, I will explain the contents of each document, how all three documents relate to one
another, and which of these I would prefer to live under. The Bill of Rights of England was passed

  • 2. The Yellow Wallpaper, By Charlotte Perkins Stetson The Yellow Wallpaper , written by Charlotte Perkins Stetson, is a first person narrative told by a depressed wife, who wrote ten short entries in a secret journal. In the narrative, the wife s physician and husband diagnose her with temporary nervous depression (Stetson 648). The narrative took place in the 1900 s when there were minimal treatments to cure nervous depression. The husband was a dominant physician in the story who believed that bed rest and the minimum amount of daily activity would cure the wife s state of depression. The failed treatments to cure what was assumed to be nervous depression later caused the wife to lose her sanity, emotional stability, and mental focus toward the end of the story. There are a plethora of different depression stages whose symptoms match the wife s, but the closest type of depression associated with her symptoms would be postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. If not treated correctly, postpartum depression can lead to a more severe type of depression called postpartum psychosis, which causes the patient to have suicidal tendencies and mass hallucination. In researching depression after birth, one may prove that the wife suffered from postpartum depression, which leads to post partum psychosis; this explains her symptoms and loss of sanity throughout the narrative; specialists in the field of after birth depression support this statement. To comprehend postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, an individual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Analyzing The Poem The Frog Prince Is a poem without any specific sound easy to understand? Possibly not! In most poems, a poet uses assonance or consonance to draw special attention to specific parts of the poem. A poem with assonance or vowels tells the reader about how low or high the sound is, giving them a sense of the emotion of the character or the poet at that specific part. On the other hand, consonance determines the friction or tone of a word or line, telling the reader when to slow down or when to read faster. Assonance and consonance helps to create rhymein poems; a rhyme is a repeated sound at the end of each line that unifies the structure of the poem. In the poem, The Frog Prince by Robert Pack, assonance and consonance are repeated to create a smooth rhyme.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pitch is defined as the quality of the sound. He uses words and sounds with same pitch at the end of every line to form a unified structure to easily catch the reader s consideration. For instance, the first four lines end with surprise , frame , body , and name (lines 1 4, p735) and all of these words have the sound of se (ee), me (ee), y (ee), me (ee) at the end. Since e has a high pitch, these words are very quick to pronounce and they create a unified structure. However, line 5, The joy she must have felt to learn , disrupts the unity of the structure, because it has an ugh sound in it which is low pitch it doesn t rhyme well with the first four lines. To recapture, the reader s attention Pack ends line 6 and 8 with phases such as wonder and under. These words create a rough er or rh sound which indicates a major and drastic change in the princess life. Moreover, line 10, 12, and 14 end with a heavy dah sound. For example, it takes a lot of energy to pronounce the following words: read , bed , and said. • 6. Branched Chain Amino Acid As A Supplement For Long... Branched Chain Amino Acid as a Supplement for Long Duration Exercise Introduction Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) are composed of three essential amino acids including leucine, isoleucine, and valine. They are unique in that they are predominantly metabolized outside of the liver in the skeletal muscle. BCAAs make up 35 40% of the amino acid pool in the body and exist in high concentrations in skeletal muscle tissue (Shimomura et al, 2006). While the supplemental dosage is dependent upon on the type of exercise,, body composition, and dietary intake, a standard dosage of the combination of BCAAs is 20g, of leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Other ratio combinations are available as well as individual supplement products of leucine and isoleucine. BCAA supplementation is often taken before, during, and after exercise. It has been observed that BCAAs potentiate the effects of exercise by their anabolic processes on protein metabolism by increasing the rate of muscle protein synthesis and decreasing the rate of muscle protein breakdown (Karlsson et al., 2004). Moreover, it has been theorized that BCAAs may improve performance, reduce muscle fatigue, and feelings of muscle soreness. Review of Literature Various studies have demonstrated that BCAAs promote activation of protein synthesis, reduced muscle degradation, and reduce perceived feelings of muscle fatigue. • 9. I Define The Nature Of Judgmental Essay As an observer from the east, Chen Cheng had many preconceived values granted by his biography. Inevitably, these values are recognizable in his portraits of the Timurid world. In five major aspects did Chen Cheng appear to be judgmental. I define the nature of judgmental as shown by negative, or occasionally, positive, semantic fields characterized by the usages of adjectives and descriptive sentences. Every case of being judgmental hints at Chen Cheng s unique background that tells the readers both about the Confucian tradition of Chinaand about the daily scene of the Timurid society. Chen Cheng was harsh in criticizing the necessary protocols performed by the ordinary inhabitants. He wrote: Every occasion when people meet, [they] do not display any protocol, only bowing slightly and almost invisibly to each other.... If two haven t met for a while, or when people get to know each other for the first time, they perform so called advanced protocol, kneeling down one of the legs.... When there is feast or gathering, ruler and his subjects, males and females, the elderly and the young all sit in a circular podium without a sense of shame. Chen Cheng obviously evaluated the Timurid social scene as barbarian and rustic. Even though people greet each other by some sort of protocol, Chen Cheng naturally disdained it as if there was nothing carried out. This is what makes comparing Poe to O Brien tricky. Poe is known around the world for his horror stories but in The Cask of Amontillado he uses the character Montresor to provide insight on what s going on in the story. Montresor is the narrator as well as a main character. As a reader continues reading The Cask of Amontillado they start to see a lot of irony in what s going on, and as Dr. Charles W. Carter from The Writing for the Arts and Humanities In The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe, Montresor is out for revenge. Poe s Gothic story might lead the reader to believe that Montresor is diabolical and calculating. Montresor s only concern appears to be exacting revenge with impunity. Montresor never clarifies why Fortunato deserves punishment. The only clue Montresor offers is that Fortunato causes him a thousand injuries until [venturing] upon insult (Poe 1). As a result, Montresor plans to bury Fortunato alive. Unwittingly, Fortunato becomes a sacrificial lamb being led to slaughter. Montresor carries out each detail while he smiles in the face of his victim. Montresor doesn t smile at the thought of Fortunato s immolation because of his viciousness. Montresor smiles because the sacrifice of Fortunato he believes brings him a great reward. Fortunato is merely a symbolic character of a despised self in the unconscious of Montresor (Sweet Jr. 332). Fortunato is ironically the mirror self of Montresor (Sweet Jr. 332). Montresor s desire to bury Fortunato alive paints the psychological portrait of repression (Sweet Jr. 332). The burial of ... • 18. The Ethical Theories Of The Ethics There are eight major ethical theories the ones that were focused on in the video were deontological and utilitarian. The deontological theory is the sense of obligation, that someone feels that it their morally duty to do the right thing. The utilitarian theory is that people act and behave so that they will produce happiness for the greatest number of people. These two different ethical theories are ways that people behave and think is morally correct. In the video the professor talked about the two ethical theories and how the choices that people make can connect to these two theories. The professor said that the utilitarian theory mantra is that good makes something right, and that these people are results oriented. The deontological theory mantra is that right makes something good, and that these people are motive oriented. The big question is what is the morally right thing to do? consequential moral reasoning says that someone should not kill an innocent person to say others. I think people should always try to avoid hurting other people, but if you could save five people and only one person die, would you do it? For example in the first situation where there are two ways the train can go with workers on it, with no brakes, and it can either hit five workers and save the one, or save five, and kill one worker by going down another track. The train driver has to decide quickly what to choose. Either way someone has to die, should it be five people or one? I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What this means is that once the place thrived and was ecologically balanced, but we tipped the balance slightly and wrecked havoc upon the environment. It has been noted to occur since the 1950 s and is ongoing. The reason that this dead zone occurs is because of a phenomenon known as eutrophication. Eutrophication is when there is an excessive amount of nutrients in a body of water and it causes an abundance of plants to grow. In this case the nearby farms had been using nitrogen in their fertilizers. The nitrogen got carried into the ocean through rain and other forms of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some species might thrive in conditions that other struggle to survive. For example some predators might need more oxygen then a smaller prey. With less predators being around, there is a huge burst in prey, which can eat up all of the bacteria. When the bacteria all die, the prey can t find any food and all die out. This causes a very unreliable food chain and can be dangerous to live in. In hypoxic zones what tends to happen is that marine life such as fish or shrimp die out quickly while the smaller organisms live. This causes whole species to die out leaving a dominance of gelatinous creatures such as jellyfish to thrive in. Economic Problems: There are many economical problems due to the dead zone ranging from fisheries going out of business to illnesses. The economical problems have paid their toll on nearby fishers whom in total have paid over 10 billion US dollars to repair the problem. • 27. Comparing The Epics And The Epic Heroes Comparison of the Epics In every epic, there are common themes that present themselves throughout the story, such as war. The epics Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and The Mahabharata, share similar characteristics in terms of their strength, values, and journeys. In each of the epics that will be discussed, there is the occurrence of fighting for honor and to have a legacy. The epic heroes follow many of the guidelines that Joseph Campbellhas written in his book Herowith a Thousand Faces. Joseph Campbell believed that the stages of a hero were to have a call to adventure, he is introduced in his ordinary world, he is hesitant and may not want to fulfill his mission, the person is encouraged by someone old and wise, the person is committed to their journey, there are tests and people to help the hero, the hero faces his last, challenging quest, he potentially faces death, the hero survives his journey and is rewarded in some way, he has a journey back to his home and could face more danger, the hero is transformed by his experience, and the hero brings back treasures. Gilgamesh shows the characteristics of hero according to Joseph Campbell because he faces many challenging quests in particular his most dangerous is going to the king and queen of (idk) (where) to find the secret of immortality, Gilgamesh survives his journey back from (where), Gilgamesh is transformed because he becomes less shellfish, on the journey home he could have possibly been in danger because of the deadly ... Wagner s best composition from his career is a composition called Der Rings Des Nibelungen, which is a composition that is eighteen hours long and four operas which had reoccurring themes connecting them all together. Firstly, Richard Wagner was born on May 22 ,1813 in Leipzig, Germany. Wagner had eight siblings, five sisters and three brothers. He never had much talent in music when he was attending a school in Dresden, Germany. He played the piano a horrible way and his teacher told him he wouldn t be much because he couldn t manage to play properly (Newman 46). Social and economic changes around 1820 to 1860 stimulated the Commercial Period, which produced two distinct spheres of influence: the business world of men and the private domestic world of women (Grace 10). Instead of the home being a means of production, industry s influence was being felt for the first time, and with its arrival, men became connected to the public realm more clearly, and conversely, women to the private realm (10). Although today related to negative outcomes, war has not always had the same impact. Indeed, many authors such as Tilly (1985) and Bates (2010) have analyzed how conflict led to the creation of States in Europe during the 14th and 15th century. According to them, the presence of wars and the need for protection raised because rural areas became wealthier as their population density decreased. This demographic change was mainly due to the progress of manufacturing and its consequent urbanization. To be successful at war, monarchs needed new sources of capital that were obtained through taxation, leading to the creation of a more complex bureaucratic system necessary to collect these taxes. Of course, individuals resisted to taxation, so monarchs had to bargain with citizens and concede some power in return for taxes. This way, monarchs gradually limited their own power, igniting the state building process, and laying the groundwork for future democracy and growth. It may not have been an obvious comparison, but most of these poems had at least one. In the poems, My Papa s Waltz and For My Daughter, both describe a beloved family member. They both put in clear detail of the positive and negative things about said familymember. These poems both describe someone misunderstanding or mistreating another. It is amazing how each of these poems can describe or be told about a certain problem and how they all can relate in some type of way. The reason behind that is because everyone no matter who they are all goes through the same situations as the next person. Whether it is, gender, age, religion, race or even education, there is something that can connect one to another. In the poem, My Papa s Waltz, by Theodore Roethke, the narrator is the small boy mentioned in the second line. He thoroughly describes every little thingabout what his father is doing; this shows the large amount of imagery in the poem. This connection is obviously between a boy and his father; hence the title of the poem. Speaking of the title of the poem, it is exactly what is named. New South Wales Public Education System In 1866 New South Wales enacted the Public Schools Act that aimed to address government spending on education, resulting in government schools receiving priority over denominational schools, and providing access to education for the growing number of communities across the colony . The Catholics opposed this move as it was hostile to the their belief in their own system of educationand Catholic puritans helped fuel the fire of sectarianism, which continued to make state aid for church run schools a highly controversial issue . However, times were changing as by the 1870s, in New South Wales, up to sixty per cent of Catholic schoolchildren attended state schools . Conflict escalated again in 1879 when the new Catholic Archbishop, Vaughan, denounced the state schools of New South Wales describing them as seed plots of future immorality, infidelity and lawlessness and accused them of squeezing very gradually and almost imperceptibly the Catholic faith out of Catholic people. In response the Parkes government enacted the Public Instruction Act of 1880, which resulted in primary education becoming nominally compulsory, cheap, widespread, and removed all state aid to denominational schools . Again the Catholics responded negatively to the decision, which aided in preserving the Catholic identity, although this came at the cost of making themselves a distinctive sub culture in the Australian community . Art At The Blanton Museum Of Art On September 19, 2015 I visited the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas in Austin, where I observed The Raising of Lazarus by Joachim Wtewael in the European Old Masters gallery. The piece recreates the biblical narrative of Lazarus resurrection and demonstrates the exorbitant style of Mannerism popular during the 16th century. Wtewael establishes the significance of the Christ with his application of form through the use of unrealistic contortions of the people, the lines following the exaggerated limbs of the congregation, and the abundant use of the colorredon almost every article of clothing. In the foreground of the painting, a crowd of people gather around the recently resurrected Lazarus. There are roughly fifteen individuals in the crowd in a variety of postures, many of which are contorted and turned away. Furthermore, their forms are painted with considerable emphasis on the way that their respective limbs are bent and twisted which consequently creates a peculiar confined space in which much of the content and action is contained. The outstretched arms and warped bodies of the figures create two diagonal lines which cross over each other in the center of the painting, leading the eye to the primary subject and the focal point, Lazarus. To the left of him is a younger woman looking outwards, contrasting with the focused inward gaze of the crowd. The supernatural poem The White Witch by James Weldon Johnson gives us an insight to what lay behind the curtains during the Harlem Renaissance. The poem takes a real life situation of the era, white women luring black men to their death via false blame, and portrays it as a fairy tale. Johnson s description of the witch s features became the most significant facet of the story, especially the significance attaches to color symbolism: Her lips are like carnations red, / Her face like new born lilies fair, / Her eyes like ocean waters blue... (13 15). J. Johnson uses the power of imagery here by depicting the evil witch as a shockingly beautiful lady. He utilizes similes to convey that she is gentle looking and captivating. With this image in mind, Johnson also makes it clear that looks can be deceiving: The great white witch you have not seen? ...Like nursery children you have looked For ancient hag and snaggled tooth; But no, not so; the witch appears In all the glowing charms of youth. (7, 9, 10, 11, 12) The evil force of women in this time does not appear to look like what you would assume. She is youthful, not old and snaggled toothed. Through this we can see that the theme is the portrayal of a black man that has fallen victim to the witch s power, and is now warning his brothers and friends. White women that had power over black men, and even black women, abused their privileges and the people in the lower class were the ones affected. In analyzation, the connotation aspect of this poem is how women during this time, specifically white women, used their power over black men and their freedom. The Inner City Of Los Angeles Growing up in the inner city of Los Angeles taught me many things; make sure you re inside before the street lights come on, never wear all red or blue, and make sure you get a good education so that one day you can leave the inner city behind. I was fortunate enough to have both a mother and a father who stressed the importance of excelling academically because attending an inner city, LA county, public school did not instill a love of academics in myself or my peers. Our teachers had checked out, the curriculum was not inspiring or relatable, and everyday there was yet another fight happening during recess. As time went on I witnessed my classmates and I take completely different paths. The strong support system I had at home proved effective. As I went on to go to college, many of my peers dropped out, the dismal state of our public school system had clearly failed them. During my undergraduate studies, the stories of my old classmates did not leave my mind. I remained deeply intrigued with the struggles of inner city people of color and the mobility they are granted. I began to volunteer at ArtStart, a non profit program that taught previously incarcerated youth the art of poetry, and I was immediately intrigued by the stories of what had led these children to a life of crime at such a young age. In these students, I saw my childhood friends who had went down the same path many years before and I wanted to know why; where did the disconnect between the school system ... It claims on different freedoms of people despite their gender, race, and age. Also, one of the principles of American liberalism is the separation of state and church. The main aim of liberalism is to promote the general welfare of the American citizens. However, sometimes the liberalism was too controversial. For example, the involvement of the United States to the wars violated the rights of people. Speaking about the WWI, George William Norris wrote that war brings no prosperity to the great mass of common and patriotic citizens. It increases the cost of living of those who toil and those who already must strain every effort to keep soul and body together. War brings prosperity to the stock gambler on Wall Street to those who are already in possession of more wealth than can be realized or enjoyed (149).
