Taking a Closer Look at an Ozone Molecule
INTRODUCTION
An ozone molecule contains three of oxygen atoms (O3) which included the molecular oxygen (O2)
that is important in our life in order to survive. Ozone is also the form of UV rays (sun) from the upper
parts of atmosphere which is called stratosphere. Another name for stratosphere is protective ozone
layer because it can help to protect human from the harmful effect of the ultra violet radiation (UV
ray) by absorbing it. But the lower part of atmosphere which name troposphere, can easily causes
harmful or damage to a lung tissues of human and also the leaves tissue of plants because of the strong
oxidizing agent. However when sunny or warm days, an ozone that formed by nitrogen oxides (NOx)

The symptoms of fleck is then merge to form more larger and from bleached white to yellowish color

proceed to a younger and older leaves. This is because the most sensitive plants to ozone are young
plants compared to mature plants which are more relatively resistant to ozone. However, the plants

Steve Jobs The Man Wo Thought Different By Karen Blumenthal
US In The World 2 Journal Reflection
This semester, I am reading Steve Jobs: The Man WHo Thought Different by Karen Blumenthal. This
book goes through the life story of Steve Jobs, Co founder of Apple. A main focus of this book is that
Steve thought very weirdly. Mike Scott says in the book, He likes to fly around like a hummingbird at
ninety miles per hour. (Blumenthal 81) When Jobs walked into the Atari offices with the intent to get
hired, he refused to leave until he was, and it worked. Steve Jobs thought and worked in a way that
would be extremely odd to most people, but it worked wonders for him. In high school, Steve Jobs
made friends with a man named Steve Wozniak. Wozniak was also very much into technology,

Krishna and Rama as exemplars of Dharma Essay examples
Dharma is knowledge prominently directed to the achievement of desired happiness here (i.e. in this
life) and hereafter by means of appropriate actions . (Khan, Benjamin. The Concept of Dharma in
Valmiki) Rama and Krishna have been set as perfect exemplars of Dharma in the texts of Ramayana
and Mahabharata respectively. They are considered to be the reincarnations of God Visnu, a Supreme
Being, and supposedly lived their lives according to the Dharmic (or right) way of life. However, the
stories of Rama and Krishna in the texts include some of their actions, which are questionable to the
act of Dharma. This may lead one to question Ram and Krishna as true exemplars of Dharma. To
understand and fully analyze if the roles of Rama and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He says that there must be a framework within a society, which is mutually agreed upon by the
existing society. Dharma is embedded in that comprehensive framework which is to be followed by
the society without asking any questions.
It has already been mentioned that wherever conscious living beings congregate some classes are
bound to take place, and the first and the most obvious way of preventing conflicts of interest in a
community is for all its members to have the same aims, same interests, same desires, hopes and fears,
in fact the same dispositions...Thus primitive ethics is deontological, a matter of rigid duties, taboos,
customs, and commandment, the fixed and unalterable. Khan then expresses that Dharma unites the
various castes in a society. He starts off with the fact that castes will always be formed within any
society. He says that these different castes will have huge differences within the society but Dharma
will unite these castes. He says that Dharma provides everyone with the same aims, desires, hopes and
fears but also allows the different castes to have different roles in the society. Dharma, hence allows
the different castes to practice their own duties without causing any conflict amongst them. Without
conflict, a sustainable society can be upheld by following the rules of Dharma. Society succeeds
because everyone follows the rules of Dharma. There would have been chaos everywhere if the
society did not follow Dharma.

High School Students Should Not be Granted Greater Privacy Rights on School Property
Safety is, the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury ( Dictionary
, n.d.). That is what locker searches provide for schools. With the early case of New Jersey v. T.L.O, a
teacher caught a 14 year old girl smoking a cigarette in the bathroom. This led the teacher to send the
girl to the principal in which the assistant principal decided to check her bag and locker for more
cigarettes or other contraband. The assistant principal found marijuana and a list of people that owed
the girl money. The teen took the school to court for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On account of lockers being the school s property it is legal for them to search them at any time under
the right circumstances.
With the use of proper search and seizure guidelines, schools are allowed to search students lockers
without a warrant. Lockers and backpacks are subject to search with reasonable suspicion. To search a
locker, a school staff member or police officer would have to have reasonable suspicion, probable
cause, and student consent in some cases (Ehlenberger). For reasonable suspicion to occur, the search
would be justified at its inception, meaning that there are reasonable grounds for suspecting that the
search will reveal evidence that the student has violated or is violating the law or school rules, and the
search is reasonably related in scope to the circumstances that justified the search, meaning that the
measures used to conduct the search are reasonably related to the objectives of the search and that the
search is not excessively intrusive in light of the student s age and sex and the nature of the offense
(Ehlenberger). Probable cause to search is when known facts and circumstances are sufficient to
warrant a man of reasonable prudence in the belief that contraband will be found (Ornelas v. United
States, 1996, at 696)

415 Sity Essay
As the one of the key factors to maintain the biodiver 415 sity, in conclusion, we have addressed the
effect of initial 416 densities by investigating basins of different survival states 417 in the cyclically
competing mobile five species game on a 418 lattice. Here, basin structures are characterized by the
final 419 state in the triangular phase space. We have found that for 420 the extended rock paper
scissors game, basin structures can 421 be changed depending on the initial considerations. To be 422
concrete, two types of initial phase spaces have been consid 423 ered. When the initial space contains
three neighboring spe 424 cies, e.g., DABC, five basins of the two species survival states 425 spirally

For all possible initial considerations, the extinction 436 basin never arises which has been guaranteed
by measuring 437 the survival probability and the non existing basin area of p1. Similar to the basin
stability, 438 43 asymptotic states of the system have been obviously depicted by the area of basins of
439 distinct states. Stochastic simulations for high mobility 440 regimes on a microscopic level are
consistent with the theo 441 retical prediction on a macroscopic level and we found that 442 five
points constituting a stable heteroclinic cycle appear 443 from lattice simulations as a robust feature.
Through our 444 microscopic and macroscopic endeavors, we suggest the per 445 suasive insight for
the biodiversity associated with the 446 extended rock paper scissors game which is sensitively 447

religion for an answer. She grew closer to her faith the older she became. For example, she stated, As I

Oscar Pistorius s Controversy
On September 11th, 2014 it was declared that Oscar Pistorius was not guilty of premeditated murder.
A few months later, however, Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide. Pistorius was then
sentenced to five years in prison for his crime. He was to serve his time in the Kgosi Mampuru II
prison located in Pretoria,Gauteng,South Africa. It is not made final about how long he will have to
remain in prison but it could possibly be ten months or even twenty months.
Oscar Pistorius was born on November 22,1986 in South Africa. Pistorius was born without a fibula in
either of his legs, which were amputated below the knees before he turned one. Having prosthetic legs

Mikhail Gorbachev Essay
Mikhail Gorbachev
For my biography project, I chose to research Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev. A man of many
accomplishments, and bold decisions that shaped a country unlike ever before. A man who lived by
the words If not me, who? And if not now, when? Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev
Early Life: Mikhail Gorbachev was born on March 2nd, 1931 in Privolnoye, Russia. He was born into
a peasant Russian Ukrainian family, his father worked as a combine driver on government owned
farms, likewise his mother showed tireless work ethic with her lifelong toil on a collective farm.
Mikhail experienced the famous Soviet famine of 1932 1933. He recalled in a memoir that In that

Just a year later, Gorbachev had become the youngest member of the Politburo. The Politburo is the
executive committee for a number of communist political parties. The first ever Politburo was created
by the Bolshevik party in 1917. Gorbachev worked closely under General Secretary Yuri Andropov
watching how he succeeded in the Politburo. When Andropov died, Gorbachev was quick to replace
him for the position that he so closely eyed. Unfortunately Mikhail lost to Konstantin Chernenko,
nevertheless Mikhail wouldn t give up for what he worked so hard for. 13 months later Chernenko
died, opening the doors for Gorbachev to become the General Secretary of the Politburo at the very
young age of 54. He was the only general secretary in the history of the Soviet Union to have been
born during Communist era.
Milestones: Gorbachev had many awards and accolades during his lifetime, but none were as great as
becoming the General Secretary of the Politburo in 1985. Mikhail wouldn t stop at just that, he felt
that the country could be better, be greater than what it was at the current moment in time. Gorbachev
realized that the Soviet Union s economy and country morale was seriously suffering from the
excessive spending on nuclear weapons during the Cold War. During his time as General Secretary he
had a strained relationship with American president Ronald Reagan.

Summary Of Martin Luther King Jr And Malcom X
Civil rights was a much larger issue during the time in which Martin Luther King Jr was alive and he
is one of the most known peaceful protestors. It is easy to forget that at one point African Americans
were not equal as we live in a society where no one really pays attention to skin color anymore.
However, we do not learn enough about the struggles that the negros had to endure in order to get to
where they are today. Back in the day everything was segregated even things like schools, drinking
fountains, and places on public transportation. Even bathrooms were labeled with oppressing words
like Colored Only and Whites Only and no one even thought twice about it. Two main men who had
similar goals to gain basic human rights were Martin Luther King Jr and Malcom X. These men were
similar in their goals, but differ in the ways in which they pursued those goals and it is without a doubt
that Martin Luther King Jr has a better method to obtaining civil rights. The major thing that the two
men had in common was that they disagreed with colored people being denied jobs simply for having
the wrong skin tone. This is important to understand as it is central to both arguments and action that
these two men took. There were certain companies who were big businesses that did not hire
indiviudals of color simply because they were white and probably racist. Being denied a job simply
due to the color of your skin is a heart breaking experience and made people feel less than those who

The American Dream and the Mode of Production in...
The American dream and the mode of production in Bordertown Prominent Karl Marx s theory on the
division of labor and the social class structure, as outlined by his concept of the mode of production ,
directly relates to social equality, ideology, and social economic power. The mode of production is
understood to be the basis from which the majority of other social concepts, such as the relations
between social classes, political and legal systems, work relations, morality and ideology, and many
other phenomena, arise. These social concepts form the superstructure, for which the economic system
forms the base. This theory is also related to ordinary people s struggle for truth, life, liberty, and the

the big American companies to build their factories there, that they simply could not pass this

Land Art History
When it emerged in the sixties among the crush of several other art movements (Pop Art, Minimalism,
among others) Land Art came to be an anti gallery artistic offshoot that straddled the domain between
architecture and sculpture. It had no manifestos nor schools nor leaders and it was not quite a
movement; the artists who were involved with it were also involved in other types of arts. Land art
was labelled as modern sculpture but its versatility and introduction of new concepts and visual
materials made it difficult to ascribe it to one field or term. Later on, the term Earth Works, coined by
Robert Smithson came to use but Earth Works only refers to works that use earth while Land Art is an
all encompassing umbrella that includes works ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Smithson s work Broken Circle Spiral Hill is two different works situated near each other. It is
actually not in America but was commissioned for an exhibition in the Netherlands near Emmen.
Spiral Hill is an earth mound that coils clockwise unto itself, like a sleeping snake. When it was
completed it was just shaped earth but in current day it is covered in green grass. Situated nearby on
the edge of the shore and into the water is the Broken Circle; its site was actually a functioning sand
and gravel quarry which was filled with green water. Smithson played with the negative and positive
space in such a way that the broken circle whose alternating arms are shaped with white and yellow
sand, recalls the Chinese Yin Yang symbol. In the middle of the positive space half circle sits a
boulder and this is yet again another allusion to monumental works of the past, this one appropriately
native to Dutch lands. Yet the center boulder in fact significantly expands the associative levels of this
work because it offers a direct tie to prehistory. . . . In the Bronze Age they [this type of large rock]

There Are No Children Here Essay examples
Alex Kotlowitz s book, There are No Children Here, is a story about two boys, Pharaoh and Lafeyette
Rivers growing in the late 1980 s in Henry Horner, a housing project in Chicago. The boys try to
retain their youth while they see constant gang violence, death of close friends, their brother in jail and
their dad struggling with a drug addiction. In Horner, there are two gangs that claim it as their turf, and
the Rivers family is constantly ducking from shots of gunfire there. They live in an overcrowded
apartment with leaky facets, heating problems and animal carcasses in the basement. The boys mother,
LaJoe, tries to keep them away from gangs and violence since her eldest children fell to the harsh
reality of the neighborhood. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to this theory, external forces can influence the development of emotions. A child can
mature a lot quicker when they are placed in an environment where they have to take care of
themselves to survive. When tragedy struck, Pharaoh didn t want to know. He continued to tell his
mother he was too young to comprehend it all, as if he were trying to prolong his childhood
(Kotlowitz 216). Both boys did recognized at an early age that death occurs frequently in their
neighborhood. They had several friends die and they were reminded of this every time gunfire went
off outside the apartment. Pharaoh tried to maintain his childhood the best he could and excelled in
school as a coping mechanism. Lafeyette, at thirteen, acted as a parent to fill his mother s role when
she was out.
The government makes one of the biggest contributions to the welfare of the family by providing
financial safety. The problem is that the government fails to show any concern for these families
unless it is brought to their attention, and even then nothing is changed. The lack of interest by the
housing authorities leads to the neglect of Horner for over fifteen years. The rotting carcasses
explained the putrid odor rising from the Riverses toilet. It wasn t aborted fetuses, as LaJoe had
though. It was dead animals, the stench of rotting flesh

Canada s Economy And Tourism Industry
There are multiple measures of the performance of the country s economy and GDP is one among
them. GDP represents the total production output of the economy and it is the sum of individual
industries. One of these industries is tourism and this essay will explore the contribution it has made
on the example of Canada s economy and tourism industry.
Canada s tourism industry is experiencing considerable redevelopment since 2002, which was thought
up by National Travel Coalition of Canada and Canada s Tourism Commission. By this, Canada aims
to regain the top 10 ranking in the world by number of arrivals by 2020. There are a few challenges
that need to be addressed. One is global cost competitiveness through illuminating unnecessary
charges and taxes assisted with visas and foreigner travel to Canada. Another one is improved national
infrastructure and addressed labour shortages within tourism industry.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is an important macroeconomics indicator used to measure the
performance of the economy. The basic formula for calculating the GDP is as follows:
GDP = C + I + G + (X M)
Where C is a consumption, I investment, G government expenditure, and (X M) is the difference
between the imports and exports. Fundamental assumption of the GDP is that spending in any of these
areas will increase the GDP and in turn, represent the increased growth of the economy. However,
some economists argue that GDP ignores the quality of the goods produced, efficiency

Isolation In One Flew The Cuckoo s Nest
Many times directors or famous playwrights are forced to choose between to astounding leads when
creating a production. Both characters play large roles in a production however the main character or

perspective of another character that often serves as a vehicle for an director to subtlety alter and

sense of size again. By returning Bromden s individuality to him and gravely injuring Ratched upon

share of Industrial sector in GDP is almost similar to other metropolitans in Brazil. Leading industries
are composed of petroleum, furniture, textiles, processed food, clothing, pharmaceuticals and
chemicals. Public services are the largest sector (23 per cent), followed by distribution and retail (17

face is the continuous expansion of the Informal Sector which deters this analysis. The average
income of the city is R$520/ month . The rate of Income is comparatively better than the other

Essay about Todd Gitlin Summary on Media

We have become immune to true feelings for individual images and stories, and thrive on the idea of
the next gossip that will follow. In this selection of the book, Gitlin discusses a seventeenth century
Dutch painter by the name of Vermeer. Vermeer was known for being able to fr[ee]ze instants, but
instants that spoke of the relative constancy of the world in which his subjects lived (Gitlin 558).
People collected Vermeer s paintings for display throughout their homes. Gitlin sees Vermeer as the
seventeenth century version of the media. In that time, the images painted were relative to the people s
era and private world. In today s world Vermeer would be the equivalent to a celebrity photographer or
movie director. If Vermeer, or any other artist of his time, were to see today s households, they would
find that the once private space inside the home is now much more dominated by images of the
outside world than what would have been possible in the 1600 s. As mentioned in Gitlin s research,
statistics show that, watching TV is the dominant leisure activity of Americans, consuming 40 percent

Justice In Plato s The Republic Essay
Justice In Plato s The Republic
Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote One man s justice is another s injustice. This statement quite
adequately describes the relation between definitions of justice presented by Polemarchus and
Thrasymachus in Book I of the Republic. Polemarchus initially asserts that justice is to give to each
what is owed (Republic 331d), a definition he picked up from Simonides. Then, through the
unrelenting questioning of Socrates, Polemarchus definition evolves into doing good to friends and
harm to enemies (Republic 332d), but this definition proves insufficient to Socrates also. Eventually,
the two agree that it is never just to harm anyone (Republic 335d). This definition is fundamental to
the idea of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although he leaves no room for the common good in his definition, his life seems to allow for some
common good. This is based on his profession as an educator, whose job it is to share knowledge with
others and on his willingness to remain a contributing part of the discussion going on at the house of
Polemarchus
To determine which of these two definitions gives a better account of the good life it is necessary to
establish what this good life is. According to Socrates in the Apology it is the greatest good for a man
to discuss virtue every day ... for the unexamined life is not worth living (38d). What this statement
implies is that to live a good life we must first question and ponder our own ideas of a good life and
then do the same with other peoples ideas. In this sense Polemarchus s definition of justice most
closely fits the good life because he allows for a common good that would result from examining the
ideas of others and the sharing of information.
To further display that Polemarchus definition of justice gives a better account of the good life I put
forth my own definition of the good life . I have come to conclude through the lessons life has taught
me thus far that the good life is one composed of love and understanding. Love of one s self because
with this I can maintain a sound mind and body, but without it I cannot love others. Love of family

Analysis Of Mandeville s Travels And Bisclavret
Monsters have always fascinated readers because of their mysterious origins and motives. These
strange and unknown characteristics lead us to ask questions and really think about how humans
justify their actions and consider what is and isn t moral. Monsters also help us come to a conclusion
about who we are as people in a functioning society. In the works of Mandeville s Travels and
Bisclavret, the authors help us discover who we are to unify us as a community, give us a sense of
security, and identifying monstrous qualities amongst people and creatures. In Mandeville s Travels,
John Mandeville tells us his stories of the discovery of the many monsters he finds across the world.
Through his stories we discover who we are as people through his monsters. His monsters tell us what
we are not, and by doing this he tells us who we are, educated, civilized, kind, and caring people. In
Mandeville s first encounter with a monster, the Melk are described as incredibly cruel people who
take pleasure in murder and making other people suffer, There are wicked and cruel folk there too. For
they have no delight or pleasure in anything except slaughtering people to drink their blood. And the
man who can kill the greatest number of men is the most respected and worthiest among them.
(Mandeville, 134). Through this explanation we understand how bizarre of a ritual this is because no
one in their right mind would take such pleasure in taking someone s life. Not only does this describe

With rapid change in the economic environment managers and scholars have been motivated to seek
competitive advantages through new sources. The role of a skilled, motivated and flexible workforce
has become more prominent than traditional attributes such as technology, economies of scale or

Conversely Jessica Miller from the SHRM Blog suggests that the effectiveness of parental strategic
management is curtailed by its design limitations. The alignment of the policy or practice defines how
a convention fits within a workplace structure, therefore ineffective strategy is usually preceded by
poor structural fit rather than poor implementation. Miller infers that both good and bad parenting will
have reciprocal impacts on a workforce . Academic studies support these findings, Huselid (1997)
performed a cluster analysis of four firms with different HR strategies. The weak clusters were
characterised by poorly planned human capital goals that were irrelevant to the workplace. The high
performance clusters reflected smart design supported with effective communication and above
average levels of management support. The correlation of alignment and effectiveness of HR strategy
is consistent with the prior work of Gehart Milkovich (1992) that poor design is the underlying trait
for 75% of failed SHRM policies. Human capital measurement is an elusive concept (Becker, 2002)
and therefore empirical analysis has inherent inaccuracies. However both the anecdotal and empirical
findings both suggest parental strategic management has an immediate impact on the workforce. They
also cohesively support the concept that design, rather than implementation, is the

High Stakes Testing In High Schools
Schools across the nation are eliminating programs that enhance creativity or even discussions about
the current world events. They all have an identical curriculum and are set up to proceed one type of
mind that processes information in one way. Thus, high stakes testing pressures students to improve
their performance. Lisa Collier states, ... So many Michigan students stayed home when their
assessment tests were given last year that several high schools were threatened with loss of
accreditation. In Illinois, 200 students expressed their scorn for the state s exam by showing up and
deliberately giving the wrong answers. Critics feel the students are being turned off to learning

The Development Of The Roman Republic
The development of the Roman Republic is an overshadowed, yet important, piece of Roman
civilization. When asked about Rome many only relish in the grand military expansions or grand
virtues of the organized empire that was established. However, full of turmoil Rome was left to battle
its own structural demons. Romans based their identities off of unwritten morals and beliefs
established through tradition. The struggle within Rome is evident throughout the writings of Appian
and Rigsby. The development of the Twelve Tables brings forth the beginning of Rome s attempt to
establish order throughout the republic and balance both the cultural and economic beliefs. I will
prove that the Roman Republic used law in an effort to keep cultural traditions and establish economic
prosperity. Rome originally based the law systems on codes of unwritten law. This law based itself
upon basic morals and the idea to have an upstanding virtue as an individual. However, this legal
system soon came to an end due to the abuse and twisting of the law codes, so that those in power
could oppress the common people. A furor for an establishment of written law over took the plebians,
law that would establish a fair and opportunistic life. The Twelve Tables sought to shorten the gap
between plebians and patricians by setting a written law code, which embraced the moral beliefs all
romans shared. The moral values and unwritten law code are established evidently in the Twelve
Tables , When a person

not want to address the actual bombing as an event though, he more so wanted to show the effect it

Sleep paralysis has a history that stretches over centuries, with a vast array of people experiencing it.
Some believe they have been visited by demons, or aliens in the night and attribute such events to
witchcraft or Satanism. There are references to folklore from every nation throughout history. The
Nightmare, is a painting by Henry Fuselli that dates to 1781, and depicts a chilling sleep paralysis
incidence. In this painting, a malicious spirit sits on a man s chest while the victim lies there limp and
unable to fight back. The cultural and spiritual implications of this phenomena is unique amongst
neurological ailments. Isolated sleep paralysis (ISP) is the inability to move or talk during the
transition between sleep and wakefulness, accompanied by auditory and visual hallucinations that are
often extremely hostile. These hallucinations can include a wicked existence in the room, an
impression of being touched, or hearing voices in the room. Some people see faces at the bedside.

The Faerie Queene And Thomas North s The Moral Philosophy...
In his chapter On the Systemic Properties of Recollection: Emboxed Narratives and the Limits of
Memory in Edmund Spenser s The Faerie Queene and Thomas North s The Moral Philosophy of Doni
, Donald Beecher argues that the brain prioritizes certain kinds of knowledge according to its own
architecture (143). Focusing on literature s potential power on the psyche, Beecher links the fictive
experience to planning and modified behavior in the reader (143). By piecing out the connection
between imaginative literature and lessons of virtue, Beecher asserts that writers must design their
work to move and modify memory so that what activates within the memory builds an ethically
improved subject (144). Linking the concept of memory and ethics to Spenser s The Faerie Queene
relies on a modality of cognition that serves to highlight the significant sections of the text meant to be
remembered (152). In other words, Spenser strives to leave a mental impression on the reader thus
pushing for psychological impact. In claiming then that memory is a builder of allegory , Beecher
asserts that The Faerie Queene implements certain rhetorical techniques in the form of memory
prompts to stimulate the mind, ultimately prodding the individual to reflect on their own behaviour
and thought (158).

assumption to look at the manner in which memory functions for the characters

Larkin vs Abse on Relationships Essay
Larkin and abse discussing relationships
Philip Larkin and Dannie Abse have very different and contrating attitudes to relationships. On the
whole, Larkin presents the concepts of love and marriage as very superficial and meaningless,
whereas Abse appears to be less such nihilistic and more open and positive about such topics. The
essay will discuss this contrast by examing Larkin s Whitsun Weddings , Wild Oats and Arundel Tomb
, and Dannie Abse s Imitations and Sons . The poem entitled `The Whitsun Weddings` is an

The heavy use of enjambment also carries this theory. Compare this to Dannie Abse s Imitations . The
poem centres on Abse s thoughts about his son and how he has become an adolescent. Although the
poem is rather negative, describing his son as a chameleon therefore suggesting his son is changing.
However unlike in Whitsun Weddings is less pessimistic, saying that although he will die like his son
his family name will be passed down the generations and expresses some affection for his offspring,
whereas Larkin has no such optimism, he focuses on the fact that he has no son and probably never
will, much like in Larkin s Dockery and Son where he contemplates his lack of contribution to his
species existence of how his life when he dies will cease to have meaning. The poem An Arundel
Tomb written by Phillip Larkin illustrates the relationship between two forms found on a tomb. This
poem shows the lies love can tell, and the falseness of how their relationship is portrayed. The fact
that their hands are clasped in one another s grip is seen to be symbolic of their undying and
everlasting love for each other. Larkin uses humour, along with sarcasm and irony to demonstrate that
this is in fact symbolic of nothing and merely by a sculptor s sweet commissioned grace . How can we

How to Become an Effective Hitter Essay
How to Become an Effective Hitter
Babe Ruth is known for his 714 home runs. However, few people realize the other statistic he holds,
which is having the most strikeouts of any player in the major league. This statistic helps to prove
there is only a slight difference between a good hit and a strike. To become a good hitter in baseball,
three fundamentals are necessary. First, the batter s stance in the batter s box, second, the batter s eye
contact on the ball, and third, the batter s swing are the three fundamentals a good hitter will possess.
First, a good stance in the batter s box is required to hit the ball successfully. The stance is not only

The knees should not be locked but slightly bent. For example, when I hit, I usually foul a ball down
the first or third base line so the outfielders move accordingly. In our final game of the season against
Middle Georgia College in Cochran when I played softball in college, however, the right fielder was
positioned way off the first base line towards second base. She was reading my even stance as I was
trying to hit the ball up the middle or over second base. She was wrong. At the last minute, I changed
my stance as the ball was coming and hit it right down the first base line. A good stance is important to
becoming a productive hitter.
Second, no matter how perfect the stance, unless a batter has good eye contact, a high batting average
will never be possible. A pitcher can put a large number of different spins on the ball. For example, the
curve ball, the slider, the fast ball, and the knuckle ball move differently. A batter needs to watch the
ball from the time the pitcher releases it until the batter brings the bat around and through the ball. A
batter cannot hit the ball unless one knows what direction the ball is traveling. Sally, a teammate at

Truman Doctrine And The Cold War
The Cold War was one of the most peculiar occurrences in human history, which endured almost fifty
years and all those years was the dominant characteristic of international relations. It was a period of
indirect confrontation between two, at the time(1945 1989), most powerfull countries in the world the
Soviet Union and the United States of America. However, there is no exact and precise date of the
beginning of the war, as it started gradually, with the contribution of many different causes. However,
a common question usually arises: was the Truman Doctrine responsible for starting the Cold War?
First of all, Truman doctrine and its objectives must be presented. The Truman doctrine was
established in 1947, by the thirty third president of the United States Harry S. Truman. In the book
The Truman Presidency the Truman doctrine was described as one of the most momentous events in
international political relations of this century . The Truman Doctrine was necessary, as the communist
push and constraint on Greece and Turkey menaced both of them with debacle. The main issue was,
that if Turkey fell, Greece would collapse with her and vice versa. And if the USSR would break
through these political barriers, the rest of Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and even India
would be in peril. In other words there would be an obvious dominance of Communism, which could
not be allowed, as it would disrupt the growing idyll of capitalism and democracy. The only way that

colonial life. The socio political subtext of the story is an important one, which brings to the forefront
the particular allure of
Casbah and the idiosyncrasies of its inhabitants. This subtext of the narrative connotes the desire and
fascination with the exotic. Jean Gabin s character is a thief, who while running from the law becomes

The intersection of this similarity is in the fact that the girlfriends taken by most of the members of his
gang are native women, and correspondingly the way that the native women are shown occasionally
as prostitutes. The magnetism that is created around Pépé and Gaby is related to this. His fascination
with her is an exhibition of his longing for the familiarity of Paris and the sanctity of his past, a
familiarity that is distant to him in Casbah. In her, Pépé is reminded of life outside the walls of
Casbah. His gradual rejection of Ines in favor of Gaby suggests his shifting disposition and his
consuming desire for Paris, possibly even a disgust of the colonialist enterprise on a deeper level.
Gaby s jewelry is a constant reminder of these ideas. The diamond is one of the most readily
identifiable symbols of the colonial process, a reminder of the exploitation of resources by the British
in
South Africa. Gaby is attracted to Pépé in a similar way. The radical distinction that he embodies as a
gangster differentiates him from the upper class, mainland
Frenchmen that she would typically be acquainted with.
The fragility of Pépé s relationship with Gaby is that it is on the verge of intangibility. On the average
day she could just as easily be his victim, as the cash value of her jewels are the main focus of the

Parkinson s Disease
Scientists generally agree that most cases of Parkinson s disease result from some combination of
nature and nurture the interaction between a people s underlying genetic make up and his or her life
activities and environmental exposures. A simple way to describe this is that genetics loads the gun
and environment pulls the trigger. In this formulation, environment has a very broad meaning that is, it
refers to any and all possible causes other than those that are genetic in origin. The interactions
between genes and environment can be quite complex. Some environmental exposures may lower the
risk of PD, while others may increase it. Similarly, some people have inherited a genetic makeup that
makes them more or less susceptible to the effects of toxicants, or poisonous agents, than others. The
effect of a combined exposure can be greater or lower than a single exposure. All of this means that
the particular combination of factors leading to PD is likely to be unique for each person. These
combinations, in different ways, may trigger a common series of biological changes that will
ultimately lead to the disease. Scientists are beginning to tease apart the non genetic factors that
influence PD risk. In particular, epidemiologists are working to identify differences in the experiences
of people who develop PD, compared to those who do not. But identifying these risk factors can be
difficult. Growing up I had an uncle who had Parkinson disease. He got this from

Somme Offensive is attributed as starting on July 1st 1916 with an infantry attack and concluding on

Haig settled late on a plan with a five day artillery barrage leading to an infantry attack on June 29th.
The artillery barrage was designed for the first two days to reduce the Germans wire defenses to create
freedom of maneuver for the infantry across the no man s land. The last three days of the barrage
would be used to reduce trenches, emplacements, strong points, and artillery pieces, as well as fire
smoke and gas canisters to confuse the German forces about their intentions. Even with over 1,500
artillery pieces at his disposal this would not be enough to make enough of an effect on German
defenses. Haig tasked his artillery to too many areas on the front wires and in depth along the 30
kilometer trench system. After the five day artillery bombardment a majority of wire was intact and
many trenches and emplacements were still usable and manned. The plan would have had better
results if Haig would have focused on the wire obstacles for the infantry attack and not try to remove
all the trenches, emplacements and strong points by artillery. By the end of the fifth day the Allied
forces were close to being out of artillery

Suffering In Cormac Mccarthy s Blood Meridian
There is a horde of explanations pertaining to the epilogue of Blood Meridian. The short passage has
sparked ideas of the idealistic human nature of suffering, the search for enlightenment through
Gnosticism, and the subtle persuasion that lies beneath eloquent language, both in Judge Holden s
claims and Cormac McCarthy s narration. It is important, before delving into these ideas, that the
passage is recounted.
In the dawn there is a man progressing over the plain by means of holes that he is making in the
ground. He uses an implement with two handles and he chucks it into the hole and he enkindles the
stone in the hole with his steel hole by hole striking the fire out of the rock which God has put there.
On the plain behind him are the wanderers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He has no desire to alleviate human suffering, or to intervene in humanity s slow self destruction; he
only watches. McCarthy uses these ideas as a platform for the bizarre atmosphere of the West, calling
into question why a creator in favor of humanity would create a place so desolate and violent. The
man in the epilogue is described as striking the fire out of the rock which God has put there,
suggesting that he is a pneumatic (Someone who understands the true state of the cosmos and the
nature of the nameless Alien God ) who frees the sparks of the divine fire trapped in matter or rock by
the God of this world, the demiurge. Within the context of Gnosticism, the steel of the man s tool
causes sparks as he digs; each hole dispersing these sparks into the cosmos and restoring unity to the
Alien God. This difficult process is one of salvation, and the pneumatics task is a long and ongoing
one, as each spark that dies without escaping to the alien God is thrown back into its realm, and thus
they all move on again like clockwork, presumably until the last bit of fire has been freed from the
rocks. In this framework, those who have not attained spiritual enlightenment follow the man and the
holes he s making. Those who search for bones are followers of religions that claim that all will be
revealed in the afterlife. These wanderers look to the empty promise of death for salvation, not
realizing that without Gnosis (Gnostic enlightenment) they will be flung back into the manifest world,
life after life. The ones who do not search are the materialists, content with the achievement of wealth
and power, who are even less awakened to Gnosis than those who search for answers in bones. Both
parties move haltingly in the light like mechanisms because they do not posses free will, and display
themselves as

An Analysis of the U.S. Health Club Industry in 2004 and the Role of Bally Total Fitness
Executive Summary Introduction
The rise of the U.S. health club industry can be traced back to the 1980s and 1990s when the majority
of health clubs emerged. By 2004, this $14 billion industry claimed 41 million members. Although the
health club industry operated in a perfectly competitive market, several prominent key players gained
large market share, including Bally Total Fitness and 24 hour Fitness. This perfect competition
encouraged entry of smaller emerging firms into the industry. In 2004, the health club industry
consisted of 26,000 clubs in the U.S. Of this growing market, ... Show more content on

Before long, Bally boasted presence in over 360 outlets in the U.S. and more than 50 internationally.
Analysis
A number of recognizable key factors are responsible for the rise of the health club phenomenon. The
most notable factor was the growing concern of people s overall health and well being. Awareness
about the impact of obesity related diseases on the quality of life and available health resources was
heightened, especially following a statement issued by the Surgeon General s office, which estimated
the annual mortality resulting from obesity complications to be over a quarter of a million. Further
research at the time showed about 6 in 10 American adults were overweight or obese, with only 4 in
10 adults falling within the healthy people indicator bracket. Between 1964 and 2004, 28 Surgeon
General s reports had been issued, all of which described the epidemiology and health consequences
of unhealthy behaviors.1. This general awareness resulted in about 17% of the U.S. population
becoming more enthusiastically committed to fitness activities, with 63% recognizing the importance
of fitness activities and 25% of whom actually attending health fitness clubs. Also, a recent survey
showed that 37% of exercisers were motivated by the desire to control weight. Consciousness about
body image and the desire to reduce stress and meet new people also had an impact on the health club
phenomenon.

What Is The Theme Of Law And Order In Lord Of The Flies
William Goldings Lord of the Flies represents the theme of Law and order throughout the novel.
During the novel the group of the boys are stuck on an island and some turn into savages. Golding
uses symbolism, characters and actions to represent law and order.
The conch was the first thing to gather all the boys on the island, for a meeting. The boys then
discussed how things should be done and they elect to vote for a chief. Him with the shell. Ralph, the
fair haired, good looking boy is voted as chief. But he isn t voted chief because of his age, leadership
skills or any form of democracy. Ralph was voted in as chief because he was the one who blew the
conch. The conch that would call the boys to sort out and discuss all the problems that they would
have over the months that the boys would spend on the island. During these meetings, the conch didn t
just call them, the conch allowed the holder to speak. To express their thoughts and ideas to all the
other boys. But as soon as fear and bloodthirst took over their minds, the conch didn t mean anything
to them and once this happened there was no way of getting them back. Soon Jack, Ralphs hunter,
turned too and decided to start his own group. Who ll join my tribe and have fun? Boy by boy, more
kids started to join Jacks tribe. Eventually the conch smashes and all breaks loose on the island. The
conch represented law and order on the island and once the conch was destroyed, Ralph s rules went
with it.

How Did Catholics Pose A Significant Threat In England
There is much historical debate as to whether Catholics posed a significant threat in England. Duffy
has found through the study of wills that Catholic views were still seen in a large section of the
population. However, Doran suggests that long and relentless government persecutions forced many
Catholics from their faith. This would indicate that there is uncertainty as to the Catholic threat
domestically and Murphy would certainly argue that due to the increasingly hostile situation in Europe
that the bigger Catholic threat came from abroad. When the Elizabethan Church Settlement was
created Elizabeth attempted to return religious policy to the way it had been at the end of Henry VIII s
reign; there is also an indication the settlement was driven by a need for political expediency.
Elizabeth herself is seen by historians such as C Haigh as a sincere and committed protestant due to
her upbringing; however, she recognised that a large population of England was still Catholic ... Show

In 1580 s both the Throckmorton Plot, a planned invasion of England from Scotland and the
Netherlands, and the Babington Plot, in which it was planned to murder Elizabeth and release Mary
Queens of Scots from house arrest, were uncovered. Furthermore, England experienced the invasion
of the Spanish Armada, which Philip of Spain viewed as a crusade and thought would lead to a full
Roman Catholic restoration. However all of these plots were unsuccessful and many historians would
argue that this was because there was no appetite from English Catholics for an invasion from abroad.
Also, many Catholics saw Elizabeth as the rightful Queen and many of these plots were regarded with
horror or distaste by most of the English Catholic laity whose religious differences with the Queen did
not readily convert them wither into supporters of assassination or a foreign conquest of

The Fair Tax Is A Proposed Tax Reform
The Fair Tax® is a proposed tax reform to the current taxation process of the federal government in
the United States. Written by John Linder and first introduced to Congress in 1999, the Fair Tax® is a
proposition for the federal government to get rid of all current taxes (including federal income taxes,
estate taxes, payroll taxes, etc.) and tax only the purchasing of goods and services for personal
consumption. Instead of taxes being applied to income, each individual would receive their full
paycheck with no federal taxes deducted and instead a 23% sales tax ($0.23 for every $1.00) would be
included in the price of an item. This translates to about a 30% sales tax ($0.23 on top of every $0.77)
today, because instead of the item being $1.00 it would be sold for $0.77 with a $0.23 tax on top,
whereas the price under the Fair Tax® would be $1.00 with the tax included in the price. This
percentage would be adjusted each year based on the government s revenue in the previous fiscal year.
To make up for the large tax on sales, each citizen would receive a prebate or annual consumption
allowance check that should negate the sales tax on purchases that are essential for living. The prebate
would be given to each individual based on the poverty level. (1) There are several points made
opposing the Fair Tax®, but in this paper I will mainly be discussing the supporting points and how it
would benefit our country s citizens, businesses, economy, and government. During the first

An Exploration of Gothic Horror Stories Essay
An Exploration of Gothic Horror Stories Gothic horror is a type of romantic, horror fiction based on
irrational fear that predominated in 18th century England. The term gothic originated from the
architectural style of the middle ages, but came to describe the dark, terrifying tales that achieved such
popularity. Gothic horror can be determined by many things which exist in all gothic horror stories,
for example eerie settings such as gothic monasteries, bleak comfortless castles, grave yards and
cobwebbed rooms lit by guttering candles. It can also be determined by a unique character such as a
beast, monster, ghost, evil creature and innocent person. Usually the innocent person is killed ... Show

All three stories were written in the 19th century. They were all set at the same time when they were
written. This is a good effect because at the time when they were written, horror stories containing
superstition and the macabre were popular because the people at that time believed in witchcraft,
ghosts and demons. The location of the action is of great importance in the gothic novel because it
creates an atmosphere and feeling to the story. The Judges House is located in the dining room of an
old, quiet and isolated house. An old, rambling, heavy built house, this creates a scary atmosphere thus
matching the typical setting of a gothic horror story. It goes on to describe the dining room as a, room
in darkness, this also creates a scary and terrifying atmosphere because you cant see in the dark and
you don t know what s in the dark, this also is an essential gothic horror element because darkness
creates a creepy and scary atmosphere. The Tell Tale Heart is located in a house that is probably old as
a lantern is used by the narrator, this creates a scary atmosphere like the Judges House because you
cant see in the dark and you don t know what is in the darkness so the reader imagines things that
create the scary atmosphere,

The Cosmological Argument for the Existence of God
The cosmological argument for the existence of god According to St. John 8:31 32 said, If you remain
in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth shall set you free
. This sentence is come from the bible, but I am not a christian, so I do not really understand what this
means. I guess it was talking about if people believe in god, and trust his words, and in the end the
will get the freedom. For many of christians, they believes in god, but many of the treatises of
theologians and Christian philosophers can shed much light on the existence of God, the problem of
evil and other objections raised by modern unbelievers. So, what I going to talk about is cosmological
argument for the existence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, some people do not believed in god typed things. To explain this objection, and
how the two forms of cosmological argument evade it, I ll use a simple, generic statement of the
cosmological argument: (1) Everything that exists has a cause of its existence. (2) The universe exists.
Therefore:(3) The universe has a cause of its existence.
(4) If the universe has a cause of its existence, then that cause is God.
Therefore:(5) God exists. This argument is subject to a simple objection, introduced by asking, Does
God have a cause of his existence? If, on the one hand, God is thought to have a cause of his
existence, then positing the existence of God in order to explain the existence of the universe doesn t
get us anywhere. Without God there is one entity the existence of which we cannot explain, namely
the universe; with God there is one entity the existence of which we cannot explain, namely God.
Positing the existence of God, then, raises as many problems as it solves, and so the cosmological
argument leaves us in no better position than it found us, with one entity the existence of which we
cannot explain. If, on the other hand, God is thought not to have a cause of his existence, i.e. if God is
thought to be an uncaused being, then this too raises difficulties for the simple cosmological argument.
For if God were an uncaused being then his existence would

Sheldon s Attempt To Condition Penny
The clip from Big Bang Theory features Sheldon attempting to condition Penny. He tries operant
conditioning on her, which is learning through the consequences of a behaviour. He performs this by
manipulating chocolate as positive reinforcement to modify Penny s behavior. A reinforcement is a
consequence of a response that increases the likelihood of that response reoccurring in the future.
Every time Penny behaves the way Sheldon desires, she is given a piece of chocolate, a reinforcer,
therefore the schedule that follows the reinforcement is continuous and a fixed ratio. There are
numerous instances where Sheldon tries to increase the likelihood of Penny s behaviours using
positive reinforcements. While the original behaviour of Penny was ... Show more content on

Originally, Penny was very talkative and excited to share her stories, but the wanted behaviour from
Sheldon was that she would stop talking. When she did so, the behaviour is positively reinforced and
the likelihood of repetition is increased by Sheldon giving her chocolate as a reward. Penny initially
demonstrates her fascination by the coincidence that Kim s replacement has the same name her her
husband, however the wanted behaviour from Sheldon was referring to Kim as freaky. She learns so
through imitation modelling, which is repeating/copying what Sheldon said/did. Sheldon then
reinforces this behaviour with chocolate, which is a desirable reward and a positive reinforcer. When
Sheldon asks if Penny would keep the decibels of their amorous activities to a minimum , she replies
with of course, which is the wanted behaviour. From the conversation, it is implied that the original
behaviour was the volume of their activity being disturbant. Because of the chocolate acting as a
positive reinforcer, the likelihood of the recurrence of the wanted behaviour(promising to keep her
volume down)

  • 2. Taking a Closer Look at an Ozone Molecule INTRODUCTION An ozone molecule contains three of oxygen atoms (O3) which included the molecular oxygen (O2) that is important in our life in order to survive. Ozone is also the form of UV rays (sun) from the upper parts of atmosphere which is called stratosphere. Another name for stratosphere is protective ozone layer because it can help to protect human from the harmful effect of the ultra violet radiation (UV ray) by absorbing it. But the lower part of atmosphere which name troposphere, can easily causes harmful or damage to a lung tissues of human and also the leaves tissue of plants because of the strong oxidizing agent. This book goes through the life story of Steve Jobs, Co founder of Apple. A main focus of this book is that Steve thought very weirdly. Mike Scott says in the book, He likes to fly around like a hummingbird at ninety miles per hour. (Blumenthal 81) When Jobs walked into the Atari offices with the intent to get hired, he refused to leave until he was, and it worked. • 4. Krishna and Rama as exemplars of Dharma Essay examples Dharma is knowledge prominently directed to the achievement of desired happiness here (i.e. in this life) and hereafter by means of appropriate actions . (Khan, Benjamin. The Concept of Dharma in Valmiki) Rama and Krishna have been set as perfect exemplars of Dharma in the texts of Ramayana and Mahabharata respectively. They are considered to be the reincarnations of God Visnu, a Supreme Being, and supposedly lived their lives according to the Dharmic (or right) way of life. However, the stories of Rama and Krishna in the texts include some of their actions, which are questionable to the act of Dharma. This may lead one to question Ram and Krishna as true exemplars of Dharma. To understand and fully analyze if the roles of Rama and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says that there must be a framework within a society, which is mutually agreed upon by the existing society. Dharma is embedded in that comprehensive framework which is to be followed by the society without asking any questions. It has already been mentioned that wherever conscious living beings congregate some classes are bound to take place, and the first and the most obvious way of preventing conflicts of interest in a community is for all its members to have the same aims, same interests, same desires, hopes and fears, in fact the same dispositions...Thus primitive ethics is deontological, a matter of rigid duties, taboos, customs, and commandment, the fixed and unalterable. Khan then expresses that Dharma unites the various castes in a society. He starts off with the fact that castes will always be formed within any society. He says that these different castes will have huge differences within the society but Dharma will unite these castes. He says that Dharma provides everyone with the same aims, desires, hopes and fears but also allows the different castes to have different roles in the society. Dharma, hence allows the different castes to practice their own duties without causing any conflict amongst them. Without conflict, a sustainable society can be upheld by following the rules of Dharma. Society succeeds because everyone follows the rules of Dharma. There would have been chaos everywhere if the society did not follow Dharma. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That is what locker searches provide for schools. With the early case of New Jersey v. T.L.O, a teacher caught a 14 year old girl smoking a cigarette in the bathroom. On account of lockers being the school s property it is legal for them to search them at any time under the right circumstances. With the use of proper search and seizure guidelines, schools are allowed to search students lockers without a warrant. Lockers and backpacks are subject to search with reasonable suspicion. To search a locker, a school staff member or police officer would have to have reasonable suspicion, probable cause, and student consent in some cases (Ehlenberger). For reasonable suspicion to occur, the search would be justified at its inception, meaning that there are reasonable grounds for suspecting that the search will reveal evidence that the student has violated or is violating the law or school rules, and the search is reasonably related in scope to the circumstances that justified the search, meaning that the measures used to conduct the search are reasonably related to the objectives of the search and that the search is not excessively intrusive in light of the student s age and sex and the nature of the offense (Ehlenberger). Here, basin structures are characterized by the final 419 state in the triangular phase space. We have found that for 420 the extended rock paper scissors game, basin structures can 421 be changed depending on the initial considerations. • 10. Summary Of Martin Luther King Jr And Malcom X Civil rights was a much larger issue during the time in which Martin Luther King Jr was alive and he is one of the most known peaceful protestors. It is easy to forget that at one point African Americans were not equal as we live in a society where no one really pays attention to skin color anymore. However, we do not learn enough about the struggles that the negros had to endure in order to get to where they are today. Back in the day everything was segregated even things like schools, drinking fountains, and places on public transportation. Even bathrooms were labeled with oppressing words like Colored Only and Whites Only and no one even thought twice about it. Two main men who had similar goals to gain basic human rights were Martin Luther King Jr and Malcom X. These men were similar in their goals, but differ in the ways in which they pursued those goals and it is without a doubt that Martin Luther King Jr has a better method to obtaining civil rights. The major thing that the two men had in common was that they disagreed with colored people being denied jobs simply for having the wrong skin tone. This is important to understand as it is central to both arguments and action that these two men took. There were certain companies who were big businesses that did not hire indiviudals of color simply because they were white and probably racist. Being denied a job simply due to the color of your skin is a heart breaking experience and made people feel less than those who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The mode of production is understood to be the basis from which the majority of other social concepts, such as the relations between social classes, political and legal systems, work relations, morality and ideology, and many other phenomena, arise. It is obvious that globalization and surplus labor market in third world countries play a huge role in a decision for the United States Congress to expand NAFTA throughout the Caribbean Islands, Central America, South America and even further. The big American corporations, who lobby the Congress for the expansion of NAFTA, are well aware that there is a lot of potential cheap labor in many countries throughout the region. It is so beneficial and lucrative for the big American companies to build their factories there, that they simply could not pass this opportunity to earn even more profits by exploiting poor people in the third world countries. By saving billions in costs, the corporations are ready to destroy dreams and lives of thousands of people by making them to work in inferior conditions for long hours and little pay. • 14. Land Art History When it emerged in the sixties among the crush of several other art movements (Pop Art, Minimalism, among others) Land Art came to be an anti gallery artistic offshoot that straddled the domain between architecture and sculpture. It had no manifestos nor schools nor leaders and it was not quite a movement; the artists who were involved with it were also involved in other types of arts. Land art was labelled as modern sculpture but its versatility and introduction of new concepts and visual materials made it difficult to ascribe it to one field or term. Later on, the term Earth Works, coined by Robert Smithson came to use but Earth Works only refers to works that use earth while Land Art is an all encompassing umbrella that includes works ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Smithson s work Broken Circle Spiral Hill is two different works situated near each other. It is actually not in America but was commissioned for an exhibition in the Netherlands near Emmen. Spiral Hill is an earth mound that coils clockwise unto itself, like a sleeping snake. When it was completed it was just shaped earth but in current day it is covered in green grass. Situated nearby on the edge of the shore and into the water is the Broken Circle; its site was actually a functioning sand and gravel quarry which was filled with green water. Smithson played with the negative and positive space in such a way that the broken circle whose alternating arms are shaped with white and yellow sand, recalls the Chinese Yin Yang symbol. In the middle of the positive space half circle sits a boulder and this is yet again another allusion to monumental works of the past, this one appropriately native to Dutch lands. Yet the center boulder in fact significantly expands the associative levels of this work because it offers a direct tie to prehistory. . . . There Are No Children Here Essay examples Alex Kotlowitz s book, There are No Children Here, is a story about two boys, Pharaoh and Lafeyette Rivers growing in the late 1980 s in Henry Horner, a housing project in Chicago. The boys try to retain their youth while they see constant gang violence, death of close friends, their brother in jail and their dad struggling with a drug addiction. In Horner, there are two gangs that claim it as their turf, and the Rivers family is constantly ducking from shots of gunfire there. According to this theory, external forces can influence the development of emotions. A child can mature a lot quicker when they are placed in an environment where they have to take care of themselves to survive. When tragedy struck, Pharaoh didn t want to know. He continued to tell his mother he was too young to comprehend it all, as if he were trying to prolong his childhood (Kotlowitz 216). Both boys did recognized at an early age that death occurs frequently in their neighborhood. They had several friends die and they were reminded of this every time gunfire went off outside the apartment. Pharaoh tried to maintain his childhood the best he could and excelled in school as a coping mechanism. Lafeyette, at thirteen, acted as a parent to fill his mother s role when she was out. The government makes one of the biggest contributions to the welfare of the family by providing financial safety. The problem is that the government fails to show any concern for these families unless it is brought to their attention, and even then nothing is changed. The lack of interest by the housing authorities leads to the neglect of Horner for over fifteen years. The rotting carcasses explained the putrid odor rising from the Riverses toilet. • 17. Canada s Economy And Tourism Industry There are multiple measures of the performance of the country s economy and GDP is one among them. GDP represents the total production output of the economy and it is the sum of individual industries. One of these industries is tourism and this essay will explore the contribution it has made on the example of Canada s economy and tourism industry. Canada s tourism industry is experiencing considerable redevelopment since 2002, which was thought up by National Travel Coalition of Canada and Canada s Tourism Commission. By this, Canada aims to regain the top 10 ranking in the world by number of arrivals by 2020. There are a few challenges that need to be addressed. One is global cost competitiveness through illuminating unnecessary charges and taxes assisted with visas and foreigner travel to Canada. Another one is improved national infrastructure and addressed labour shortages within tourism industry. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is an important macroeconomics indicator used to measure the performance of the economy. The basic formula for calculating the GDP is as follows: GDP = C + I + G + (X M) Where C is a consumption, I investment, G government expenditure, and (X M) is the difference between the imports and exports. Fundamental assumption of the GDP is that spending in any of these areas will increase the GDP and in turn, represent the increased growth of the economy. This statement quite adequately describes the relation between definitions of justice presented by Polemarchus and Thrasymachus in Book I of the Republic. Polemarchus initially asserts that justice is to give to each what is owed (Republic 331d), a definition he picked up from Simonides. Then, through the unrelenting questioning of Socrates, Polemarchus definition evolves into doing good to friends and harm to enemies (Republic 332d), but this definition proves insufficient to Socrates also. This is based on his profession as an educator, whose job it is to share knowledge with others and on his willingness to remain a contributing part of the discussion going on at the house of Polemarchus To determine which of these two definitions gives a better account of the good life it is necessary to establish what this good life is. What this statement implies is that to live a good life we must first question and ponder our own ideas of a good life and then do the same with other peoples ideas. These strange and unknown characteristics lead us to ask questions and really think about how humans justify their actions and consider what is and isn t moral. In the works of Mandeville s Travels and Bisclavret, the authors help us discover who we are to unify us as a community, give us a sense of security, and identifying monstrous qualities amongst people and creatures. In Mandeville s Travels, John Mandeville tells us his stories of the discovery of the many monsters he finds across the world. Through his stories we discover who we are as people through his monsters. His monsters tell us what we are not, and by doing this he tells us who we are, educated, civilized, kind, and caring people. In Mandeville s first encounter with a monster, the Melk are described as incredibly cruel people who take pleasure in murder and making other people suffer, There are wicked and cruel folk there too. For they have no delight or pleasure in anything except slaughtering people to drink their blood. And the man who can kill the greatest number of men is the most respected and worthiest among them. The alignment of the policy or practice defines how a convention fits within a workplace structure, therefore ineffective strategy is usually preceded by poor structural fit rather than poor implementation. Academic studies support these findings, Huselid (1997) performed a cluster analysis of four firms with different HR strategies. When asked about Rome many only relish in the grand military expansions or grand virtues of the organized empire that was established. However, full of turmoil Rome was left to battle its own structural demons. Romans based their identities off of unwritten morals and beliefs established through tradition. The struggle within Rome is evident throughout the writings of Appian and Rigsby. The development of the Twelve Tables brings forth the beginning of Rome s attempt to establish order throughout the republic and balance both the cultural and economic beliefs. I will prove that the Roman Republic used law in an effort to keep cultural traditions and establish economic prosperity. Rome originally based the law systems on codes of unwritten law. This law based itself upon basic morals and the idea to have an upstanding virtue as an individual. However, this legal system soon came to an end due to the abuse and twisting of the law codes, so that those in power could oppress the common people. A furor for an establishment of written law over took the plebians, law that would establish a fair and opportunistic life. In his chapter On the Systemic Properties of Recollection: Emboxed Narratives and the Limits of Memory in Edmund Spenser s The Faerie Queene and Thomas North s The Moral Philosophy of Doni , Donald Beecher argues that the brain prioritizes certain kinds of knowledge according to its own architecture (143). Focusing on literature s potential power on the psyche, Beecher links the fictive experience to planning and modified behavior in the reader (143). By piecing out the connection between imaginative literature and lessons of virtue, Beecher asserts that writers must design their work to move and modify memory so that what activates within the memory builds an ethically improved subject (144). Linking the concept of memory and ethics to Spenser s The Faerie Queene relies on a modality of cognition that serves to highlight the significant sections of the text meant to be remembered (152). In other words, Spenser strives to leave a mental impression on the reader thus pushing for psychological impact. • 35. Larkin vs Abse on Relationships Essay Larkin and abse discussing relationships Philip Larkin and Dannie Abse have very different and contrating attitudes to relationships. On the whole, Larkin presents the concepts of love and marriage as very superficial and meaningless, whereas Abse appears to be less such nihilistic and more open and positive about such topics. The essay will discuss this contrast by examing Larkin s Whitsun Weddings , Wild Oats and Arundel Tomb , and Dannie Abse s Imitations and Sons . The poem entitled `The Whitsun Weddings` is an observational piece by Larkin when he was travelling from Hull to London by train. The poem has seven stanzas and is is typical of Larkin. However unlike in Whitsun Weddings is less pessimistic, saying that although he will die like his son his family name will be passed down the generations and expresses some affection for his offspring, whereas Larkin has no such optimism, he focuses on the fact that he has no son and probably never will, much like in Larkin s Dockery and Son where he contemplates his lack of contribution to his species existence of how his life when he dies will cease to have meaning. The poem An Arundel Tomb written by Phillip Larkin illustrates the relationship between two forms found on a tomb. This poem shows the lies love can tell, and the falseness of how their relationship is portrayed. The fact that their hands are clasped in one another s grip is seen to be symbolic of their undying and everlasting love for each other. Larkin uses humour, along with sarcasm and irony to demonstrate that this is in fact symbolic of nothing and merely by a sculptor s sweet commissioned grace . • 36. How to Become an Effective Hitter Essay How to Become an Effective Hitter Babe Ruth is known for his 714 home runs. However, few people realize the other statistic he holds, which is having the most strikeouts of any player in the major league. This statistic helps to prove there is only a slight difference between a good hit and a strike. To become a good hitter in baseball, three fundamentals are necessary. First, the batter s stance in the batter s box, second, the batter s eye contact on the ball, and third, the batter s swing are the three fundamentals a good hitter will possess. First, a good stance in the batter s box is required to hit the ball successfully. The stance is not only important to the hitter, but it informs the defense of the location of ... For example, when I hit, I usually foul a ball down the first or third base line so the outfielders move accordingly. In our final game of the season against Middle Georgia College in Cochran when I played softball in college, however, the right fielder was positioned way off the first base line towards second base. She was reading my even stance as I was trying to hit the ball up the middle or over second base. She was wrong. At the last minute, I changed my stance as the ball was coming and hit it right down the first base line. A good stance is important to becoming a productive hitter. Second, no matter how perfect the stance, unless a batter has good eye contact, a high batting average will never be possible. A pitcher can put a large number of different spins on the ball. For example, the curve ball, the slider, the fast ball, and the knuckle ball move differently. A batter needs to watch the ball from the time the pitcher releases it until the batter brings the bat around and through the ball. A batter cannot hit the ball unless one knows what direction the ball is traveling. • 37. Truman Doctrine And The Cold War The Cold War was one of the most peculiar occurrences in human history, which endured almost fifty years and all those years was the dominant characteristic of international relations. It was a period of indirect confrontation between two, at the time(1945 1989), most powerfull countries in the world the Soviet Union and the United States of America. However, there is no exact and precise date of the beginning of the war, as it started gradually, with the contribution of many different causes. However, a common question usually arises: was the Truman Doctrine responsible for starting the Cold War? First of all, Truman doctrine and its objectives must be presented. The Truman doctrine was established in 1947, by the thirty third president of the United States Harry S. Truman. In the book The Truman Presidency the Truman doctrine was described as one of the most momentous events in international political relations of this century . The Truman Doctrine was necessary, as the communist push and constraint on Greece and Turkey menaced both of them with debacle. The main issue was, that if Turkey fell, Greece would collapse with her and vice versa. And if the USSR would break through these political barriers, the rest of Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and even India would be in peril. In other words there would be an obvious dominance of Communism, which could not be allowed, as it would disrupt the growing idyll of capitalism and democracy. The only way that ... The socio political subtext of the story is an important one, which brings to the forefront the particular allure of Casbah and the idiosyncrasies of its inhabitants. This subtext of the narrative connotes the desire and fascination with the exotic. Jean Gabin s character is a thief, who while running from the law becomes immersed in the maze of the city of Casbah. The intersection of this similarity is in the fact that the girlfriends taken by most of the members of his gang are native women, and correspondingly the way that the native women are shown occasionally as prostitutes. The magnetism that is created around Pépé and Gaby is related to this. His fascination with her is an exhibition of his longing for the familiarity of Paris and the sanctity of his past, a familiarity that is distant to him in Casbah. In her, Pépé is reminded of life outside the walls of Casbah. His gradual rejection of Ines in favor of Gaby suggests his shifting disposition and his consuming desire for Paris, possibly even a disgust of the colonialist enterprise on a deeper level. Gaby s jewelry is a constant reminder of these ideas. The diamond is one of the most readily identifiable symbols of the colonial process, a reminder of the exploitation of resources by the British in South Africa. Gaby is attracted to Pépé in a similar way. The radical distinction that he embodies as a gangster differentiates him from the upper class, mainland Frenchmen that she would typically be acquainted with. The fragility of Pépé s relationship with Gaby is that it is on the verge of intangibility. • 39. Parkinson s Disease Scientists generally agree that most cases of Parkinson s disease result from some combination of nature and nurture the interaction between a people s underlying genetic make up and his or her life activities and environmental exposures. A simple way to describe this is that genetics loads the gun and environment pulls the trigger. In this formulation, environment has a very broad meaning that is, it refers to any and all possible causes other than those that are genetic in origin. The interactions between genes and environment can be quite complex. Some environmental exposures may lower the risk of PD, while others may increase it. Similarly, some people have inherited a genetic makeup that makes them more or less susceptible to the effects of toxicants, or poisonous agents, than others. The effect of a combined exposure can be greater or lower than a single exposure. All of this means that the particular combination of factors leading to PD is likely to be unique for each person. These combinations, in different ways, may trigger a common series of biological changes that will ultimately lead to the disease. Scientists are beginning to tease apart the non genetic factors that influence PD risk. In particular, epidemiologists are working to identify differences in the experiences of people who develop PD, compared to those who do not. But identifying these risk factors can be difficult. The Somme Offensive is attributed as starting on July 1st 1916 with an infantry attack and concluding on November 18th 1916 for a total of 141 days ending in an inconclusive stalemate leading to a war of attrition between both empires. Haig settled late on a plan with a five day artillery barrage leading to an infantry attack on June 29th. The artillery barrage was designed for the first two days to reduce the Germans wire defenses to create freedom of maneuver for the infantry across the no man s land. The last three days of the barrage would be used to reduce trenches, emplacements, strong points, and artillery pieces, as well as fire smoke and gas canisters to confuse the German forces about their intentions. Even with over 1,500 artillery pieces at his disposal this would not be enough to make enough of an effect on German defenses. Haig tasked his artillery to too many areas on the front wires and in depth along the 30 kilometer trench system. After the five day artillery bombardment a majority of wire was intact and many trenches and emplacements were still usable and manned. The short passage has sparked ideas of the idealistic human nature of suffering, the search for enlightenment through Gnosticism, and the subtle persuasion that lies beneath eloquent language, both in Judge Holden s claims and Cormac McCarthy s narration. It is important, before delving into these ideas, that the passage is recounted. In the dawn there is a man progressing over the plain by means of holes that he is making in the ground. He has no desire to alleviate human suffering, or to intervene in humanity s slow self destruction; he only watches. McCarthy uses these ideas as a platform for the bizarre atmosphere of the West, calling into question why a creator in favor of humanity would create a place so desolate and violent. The man in the epilogue is described as striking the fire out of the rock which God has put there, suggesting that he is a pneumatic (Someone who understands the true state of the cosmos and the nature of the nameless Alien God ) who frees the sparks of the divine fire trapped in matter or rock by the God of this world, the demiurge. Within the context of Gnosticism, the steel of the man s tool causes sparks as he digs; each hole dispersing these sparks into the cosmos and restoring unity to the Alien God. This difficult process is one of salvation, and the pneumatics task is a long and ongoing one, as each spark that dies without escaping to the alien God is thrown back into its realm, and thus they all move on again like clockwork, presumably until the last bit of fire has been freed from the rocks. In this framework, those who have not attained spiritual enlightenment follow the man and the holes he s making. Those who search for bones are followers of religions that claim that all will be revealed in the afterlife. These wanderers look to the empty promise of death for salvation, not realizing that without Gnosis (Gnostic enlightenment) they will be flung back into the manifest world, life after life. The ones who do not search are the materialists, content with the achievement of wealth and power, who are even less awakened to Gnosis than those who search for answers in bones. Awareness about the impact of obesity related diseases on the quality of life and available health resources was heightened, especially following a statement issued by the Surgeon General s office, which estimated the annual mortality resulting from obesity complications to be over a quarter of a million. Further research at the time showed about 6 in 10 American adults were overweight or obese, with only 4 in 10 adults falling within the healthy people indicator bracket. Between 1964 and 2004, 28 Surgeon General s reports had been issued, all of which described the epidemiology and health consequences of unhealthy behaviors.1. This general awareness resulted in about 17% of the U.S. population becoming more enthusiastically committed to fitness activities, with 63% recognizing the importance of fitness activities and 25% of whom actually attending health fitness clubs. Duffy has found through the study of wills that Catholic views were still seen in a large section of the population. However, Doran suggests that long and relentless government persecutions forced many Catholics from their faith. This would indicate that there is uncertainty as to the Catholic threat domestically and Murphy would certainly argue that due to the increasingly hostile situation in Europe that the bigger Catholic threat came from abroad. Written by John Linder and first introduced to Congress in 1999, the Fair Tax® is a proposition for the federal government to get rid of all current taxes (including federal income taxes, estate taxes, payroll taxes, etc.) and tax only the purchasing of goods and services for personal consumption. Instead of taxes being applied to income, each individual would receive their full paycheck with no federal taxes deducted and instead a 23% sales tax ($0.23 for every $1.00) would be included in the price of an item. This translates to about a 30% sales tax ($0.23 on top of every $0.77) today, because instead of the item being $1.00 it would be sold for $0.77 with a $0.23 tax on top, whereas the price under the Fair Tax® would be $1.00 with the tax included in the price. This percentage would be adjusted each year based on the government s revenue in the previous fiscal year. To make up for the large tax on sales, each citizen would receive a prebate or annual consumption allowance check that should negate the sales tax on purchases that are essential for living. The prebate would be given to each individual based on the poverty level. This argument is subject to a simple objection, introduced by asking, Does God have a cause of his existence?
