Essay about Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson of The Great...
Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson of The Great Gatsby
In the novel, The Great Gatsby, the two central women presented are Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle
Wilson. These two women, although different, have similar personalities. Throughout the novel,
there are instances in which the reader feels bad for and dislikes both Daisy and Myrtle. These two
women portray that wealth is better than everything else, and they both base their lives on it. Also
the novel shows the hardships and difficulties they have in their marriages. They are never satisfied
with what they have, and are always longing for more.
Daisy Buchanan is married to Tom Buchananand cousin to Nick Carraway. During World War I,
many soldiers stationed by her in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is wrong and disrespectful because she claimed that she loved him, and does not have the
common decency to show up and pay her respects.
Despite Daisy being a dislikeable character, there are some instances in which the reader feels
sympathetic towards her. A big factor is the affair that Tom has with Myrtle. Daisy knows that
what her husband is doing, but she still stays with him for the fact that they have a daughter
together and for financial support. When Nick first sees Daisy s daughter, she says, I m glad it s
a girl. And I hope she ll be a fool that s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little
fool. By this she means that if her daughter is in the same position she is in her marriage, she
won t know of the affair that her husband might have. The reader feels bad for Daisy because she
is not being treated the way a wife is supposed to be treated. That is why she is yearning for love,
and Gatsby was there to give it to her. Another time is at the hotel suite scene. She doesn t know
who to choose from Tom or Gatsby. She s torn between two lovers, and both of them have their
own reasons for loving her, and why she should choose them. Gatsby has a lot to offer her, and
loves her for who she is. He succeeded in life just to be with her. Although Tom is having an affair,
he questions her about their love, and that Gatsby cannot take his place.

Essay The Political Ethos of the Civil Society
The Political Ethos of the Civil Society
ABSTRACT: Totalitarian political systems in the socialist countries of Eastern Europe destroyed
and repressed the civil society that used to exist in them. The authoritarian and totalitarian ethos
was formed under a powerful influence of ideologies of the communist parties and politocracy in
these countries so that the political ethos of politicians dominated the political ethos of the citizen.
The breakdown of the real socialism and its unsuccessful attempts to complete accelerated liberal
modernization of these societies caused turbulence of social values in addition to the general moral
chaos. The moral crisis has deepened; anomie increased as well as the society s inclination to

In the seventies of the twentieth century the term civil society was used by the opposition and
dissident groups in the socialist countries to denote the strategy of political fight against
totalitarianism by forming autonomous institutions beyond the state control and for the sake of
establishing a democratic society as opposed to the total state. By redefining the modern concept
of the civil society a new and contemporary concept of the civil society has been created as an
alternative to authoritarian socialism. Thus, a new practical and theoretical political paradigm has
been set up for explaining ways of the transition of socialist, authoritarian and stagnant societies
into democratic and civil societies which are able for self development and are willing to use the
civilization achievements of the developed societies as well as the achievements of social and
political philosophy and contemporary sciences.
The civil society is most often determined as autonomous pluralism of private and public activities,
beyond the state control, expressed in individual freedom, local and regional self rule, citizens
participation in public affairs and social movements as well as in cultural autonomy and free trade
unionism.
In the former socialist countries the civil society was destroyed and repressed by state measures.
In order to restore it, it is necessary to de etatize all

Theme Of Lysistrata
Reading the story about Lysistrata made me think hard about what is the best title to replace the
original. The new title that best reflects its theme, Desire of Women Between the War. Lysistrata,
tells a story of women that are tired seeing their men going to war and are not pleasuring their
ladies. These women from the Athens and Sparta decided to have a meeting to discuss how to
punish the men who are going to the Peloponnesian War. Aristophanes explains to the women that
war and territorial aggression are substitutes for sex and vice versa (Aristophanes 783). I thought
the story was about sex because of so many back and forth sexual statements that were said in the
story, but the women weren t punishing the men for the touch of their husband.... Show more

Some of the women didn t desire to end the war, even though they knew it from the beginning or
not. In this story Lysistrata and the other women in the room made a decision that the men didn t
agree with, these women wanted to achieve their goal by withholding sex, even though it was
radical but it works, it got the job done by ending the war and the men think about what they most
desire when they come home to their wife with pleasure all night. Renaming the story Desire of
Women Between the War gives the audience a little idea of what the story captures, what Lysistrata
and the women truly desire, which is the attention of their husbands, peace, equality, and family all
together in one piece. Unlike the original topic, Lysistrata, it means Dissolver of Armies
(Aristophanes 783), and for me, I thought of only the story would take place in war and not what

Project Manager s Role On Construction Project Essay
Part 1. Investigation
1.The project manager plays a vital role on the construction project, from the very beginning of its
initiation and planning to execution, to completion and handing over the complete project to the
client. The project manager identifies and select the discrete processes to meet the project objective
and target, considering the constituting inputs and outputs for the process (Project Management
Institute, 2013). The project manager should be perceptive, well informed and should show
keenness to the project for its timely delivery, under the targeted cost, reliable and durable quality,
as projects are financial investments and a successful project gains the trust of client (Heerkens,
2014). The project manager is required to perform better than the past, which would be achieved
by learning by doing. The project manager will not be able to complete the project without a team.
The project manager should make a team and take all the responsibility like a team leader for the
successful delivery of the project (Heerkens, 2014). Before starting the project, the project manager
should breakdown the project into measurable tasks, inter linking the tasks, allocating time to each
task, assigning tools, techniques, human resources to each tasks for its successful completion
(Tinnirello, 1999).
2.The project management processes consists of discrete and identifiable elements, and activities.

The Mexican War Of Mexico
The Mexican War
Starting in 1845 and concluding in 1850 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was the era where
the Mexican war occurred. This war had triggers with disagreements on the ideal of Manifest
Destiny and major actions by President Polk that led the United States into attempting to annex
Texas. Texas at that time was independent and was not part of Mexico nor America. Mexico wanted
Texas to stay neutral that they threatened a war to the United States if they tried anything to attempt
anything. Unfortunately, the United States did not really care by going forward with the
annexation and land conquering, sparking a war with Mexico. So the Mexican war began and
nothing was ever the same. The annexation of Texas was the biggest reason as to what started the
tension and the foreseen war between Mexico and the United States. When Texas gained its
independence from Mexico, the United States considered it as open land where as Mexico
thought of it as its own. It started with President Tyler, who did not want Britain to gain Texas,
therefore proposed an annexation. Not only would the gain of Texas add more land to the United
States, but the south wanted it as well because it would be considered as another slave state.
Mexico threatened war if Texas was annexed but once part of it was they did nothing about it,
leaving tension between the United States and Mexico. Everyone has the right to negotiate, but
coming up with an agreement between Mexico and the United

Character Analysis Of Deborah From Soldier s Secret
Deborah from Soldier s Secret is characterized through indirect characterization. She is shown to be
a stubborn person through her words, thoughts, and through other characters. Deborah shows her
stubbornness through her thoughts. This is can be shown through her tendency to not accept
things, like on page 36: I will be in loco parentis, the deacon said importantly, rubbing his hands.
That is latin for in place of your father. Oh, no you won t, I thought. Never! Even after her mother
had told her that her father was a bad man, Deborahdidn t change how she felt about him. When a
new man stepped into her life to take place as her father , she refused to accept it. She was
stubborn and would not let anyone take her father s place in her heart, no matter what. Deborah
challenges almost anything she doesn t agree with, even if she knows it is best. Never! I
resolved. I ll die before I let him dig into me that way. I was determined even though I could not
shut out the pictures of untreated wounds: sores, running pus, scabs, flies. My injuries would
surely become infected. And then what? No matter. (138) Though Deborah knew what would
happen to her bullet wounds if she did not get medical help, she continued to lie to the doctor
about not having any injuries. Deborah knows that things will turn out badly if she does not
give in, but since she is so stubborn she refuses to get her wounds treated. Through her thoughts,
Deborah is indirectly shown to be stubborn. Other character s words also reveal that Deborah is
stubborn. Deborah s fellow soldiers can easily see her stubbornness. Because, Mike said, this lad
s stubborn as a mule. They tried but he just wouldn t go. He swore to them that his folks skin
always colored this way when they were sick, and it was a natural thing. (5) Deborah had
refused to go to any doctor, even though she knew she was deathly ill. Her fellow soldiers saw
this and tried to get her to go to the hospital, but she continued to dismiss their concerns. One of
her comrades then tells the others about her obvious stubbornness. Characters who have barely met
her can see signs of her unbending look on things. He stared at me hard but did not reproach me for
my challenge.

Bicameral Legislature Dbq Essay
The US should stick with a bicameral legislature as opposed to moving to a unicameral
legislature. The advantages of a bicameral legislature surpasses those of a unicameral legislature.
A bicameral legislature allows for one chamber to be closer to its constituents. In addition, a
bicameral legislature allows house and senate members to have distinct jobs which distributes
the workload instead of putting it all in the hands of a single chamber. It also makes it so that it is
less likely for a flawed bill to be passed. For those reasons, the US should keep a bicameral
legislature.
A benefit of a bicameral legislature is that constituents get better representation through the House
of Representatives. According to Document B, the House of Representatives is meant to be closer
to its constituents while the Senate focuses on being the more deliberate chamber. Basically, House
members specialists while Senators are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

jurisdiction. This means that the two chambers are the same thing. Senators and House members
may be elected the same why, however, they do not share the same responsibilities as said in
Document E. This is important because the document is inferring that having one chamber is the
same thing as having two but it isn t because each chamber has its own duties. They both play a
role in passing legislation however, they do have some distinct jobs. For example, the Senate has
the power to approve treaties. Meanwhile, the House has the power to initiate spending bills, and
impeach officials. They also have different committees to handle different tasks. Saying that the two
chambers have the same power isn t completely correct. This is why a unicameral legislation

Taking a Look in Tay-Sachs Disease
The cell is the basic unit of life in eukaryotic organisms. The inside of the cell is comprised of
multiple subunits called organelle that all function together to maintain homeostasis and function.
Each individual organelle is assigned a specific task and purpose for the cell. These tasks and
purposes can range from structural support all the way to the disposal of malfunctioning
organelle.1 Similarity to a machine, if one part stops functioning to full potential, serious if not
fatal consequences can be faced. A shining example of the effects of a malfunctioning organelle
occurs in Tay Sachs disease. Tay Sachs disease is a lysosomal disorder that is caused by a faulty
lysosome.1 Recent studies and research have been investigating the causes and pathways Tay Sachs
disease with great success, which is amazing news for the scientific community.
Lysosomes are membranous sacs of enzymes that are typically are involved in the digestion of
cellular macromolecules. They are made by both the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi complex.
Lysosomes have various roles, including the recycling of the cell s organic material and in the
intracellular digestion of macromolecules. The digestion of macromolecules is carried out through
an intense concentration of enzymes. To be specific, lysosomes contain close to 50 different
degrading enzymes that are capable of hydrolyzing proteins, DNA, RNA, polysaccharides, and
lipids within the cell.1 All of lysosomal enzymes are acid hydrolases,

For many poor, minorities, and other disadvantaged groups, the country has not made significant
progress toward quality education for at risk youth consistent with specific provisions outlined in
the No Child Left Behind Act, failing the hopes of students and their families. When the NCLB
Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush on January 8, 2002, it was supposed to
represent a new beginning in providing quality schooleducationto young people who come from
low income families and who have special needs. Its purpose was to close the achievement gap
between groups of students in elementary and high schools. However, many school districts across
the country are still having difficulties in meeting the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, these mandates did not produce the type of results supporters of the law had
hope for. Rather, they taught educators to see accountability as unserious and political (Bell and
Hess). The law produced false positives, resulting in mediocre to poor performances on
standardized tests, more public school takeovers and/or overhauling of school districts,
controversial teacher reforms, dependence on standardized test preparation rather than classroom
content instruction, and increased academic wrongdoings (e.g., changing of student grades and
test taking fraud). In 2015, Congress in both chambers passed a new education law, Every
Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), designed to fix some of the flaws under NCLB. The ESSA was
signed into law by President Barack Obama on December 10, 2015. This law shifted most of the
responsibility of education policy and school accountability from the federal government to the
states. However, the law modified but did not eliminate provisions relating to the periodic
standardized tests given to students ( Every Student Succeeds Act ). On the legal front, there have
been remarkably very few legal challenges to NCLB. However, a few states and special interest
groups have tried to get some of the mandates taken out because they were unconstitutional and/or
created a financial burden on school districts across the country. One

There are 03 types of strategies for selecting a target a market for Tucson textiles
Undifferentiated marketingThis type of marketing views the market as one group with no segments
therefore using a single marketing strategy. Undifferentiated marketing generally involves targeting
the whole with one product and an undifferentiated marketing can be cheaper that other strategies
because there is only one product to produce. This strategy utilizes a single marketing mix to reach
the maximum number of consumers in the target market selected.
Differentiated marketingHere the marketing strategy targets different market segments with
specific marketing mix, which is designed to meet those segments needs. Differentiated marketing
strategy involves the preparation and communication of different brand and product messages to
different types of customers.
Concentrated marketingThis type of marketing focuses on selecting a particular market. This
strategy can categorize the company into a single product. Concentrated marketing is famous for
small firms because mass distribution, production and mass advertising are not necessary these

Essay on The Concept of Moral Panics
The Concept of Moral Panics A moral panic is said to occur when the media mobilises public
opinion around the condemnation of deviance ( Media coverage of deviance: moral panics ,
lecture handout, 07 10 02). Deviance, in this context, refers to the violation of social norms and
values, and the subsequent disruption of social order. This essay will begin with a clarification
of the terms moral panic and deviance and outline how the two concepts are related. It will then
describe the processes of news reporting while making reference to Stanley Cohen s established
case study of the 1964 Bank Holiday fracas in Clacton, England as an example of such a media

Leslie Wilkins in her extract titled Information and the definition of deviance (Cohen and Young,
1974, p.36) supports this relativist view and uses culture to illustrate how deviance is subjective.
She explains how many cultures prior to Western contact held definitions of normality which
were out of accord with existing Western values. However, once the cultures made contact, the
Western interlopers would redefine the indigenous cultures perceptions of normality and
deviance. Thus, distinct value systems do exist, but the more powerful groups in a society
routinely impose their own values on others. The mass media is a crucial influence on the
public perception of deviance. When it focuses on deviance, it shapes opinions on what
constitutes deviant behaviour and provides a symbolic cement for a consensus of values (
Media coverage of deviance: moral panics , lecture handout, 07 10 02). And as previously stated,
when the media s focus on such deviance instigates a vehement public denunciation of the
associated problem , it is said to be encouraging moral panic. In his study Folk Devils and Moral
Panics , Stanley Cohen suggests that a moral panic often occurs when a condition, episode, person
or group of persons emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests

Implementation Status: In place.
Implementation of Control: The Department of Health and Human Services has implemented risk
assessment policies and procedures such as HIPAA, through its regulatory compliance of OMB

Margaret Mahler s Theory Of Separation Individuation
Margaret Mahler s theory of separation individuation suggests that healthy psychological
development is based on the child s ability to gradually separate his or herself from the mother to
form an individual identity (Flanagan, 2011). There are four phases of development that a child
will go through to attain this individuation: the autistic phase, the symbiotic phase, and separation
individuation proper (Flanagan, 2011). The author can assume that Antonio completed his autistic
phase successfully, as he can successfully distinguish between pleasure and pain (Robbins,
Chatterjee, Canda, 2011). In addition to this, the case vignette states that he was a healthy baby to
whom Hilda was very attentive. Antonio s symbiotic phase, when the child and the motherare at
their most complete union, seems to have progressed without major incident as well; Hilda was
attentive to Antonio s needs and would respond positively to her voice with a head turn and a smile
(Flanagan, 2011).
The next phase, separation individuation proper, includes four sub phases: differentiation,
practicing, rapprochement, and on the way to object constancy (Flanagan, 2011). It is within these
sub phases that Antonio is static; because of the abusive reactions of his father, Daniel, Hilda had to
intervene during Antonio s separation individuation proper development. Instead of giving Antonio
the freedom to crawl around and explore his world during the differentiation phase, Hilda picked
him up for fear that

An anchor is a specific word which represents behaviors classically conditioned to evoke a
specific response. This response can be cognitive or behavioral. An anchor does not need to be
to be reinforced with its response and it does not need to be conditioned over a period of time.
Language is a common anchoring system. For example, the word dog will be an auditory anchor
to an image of four legged animal that barks, an effective anchor with little cognitive effort. The
smell of a hospital or a family member screaming in anger is examples of anchors that have been
unintentionally installed and they operate out of an individual s awareness and direct control.
Neuro Linguistic Programming operates to install new anchors which work just as well as these
unintentional anchors and work toward evoking a response that increases the behavioral flexibility
of a person and it is through these anchors that changes can be made in the strategies of thought.
Using NLP a therapist can establish a map of one s cognitive representation of the world and place
anchors that be established in a clients strategies that provoke responses that differ from those
expected using their original strategy. It is now used internationally used by millions of people
throughout the world in such diverse fields as management, sales, marketing, public relations,
education, therapy, the military and police, sport, and personal development. (Schaefer, Beausay
Pursley 1983).

Scotland s Rural Economic Crisis
A rural economic crisis occurred as there was a decline of people working the land. The highland
population between the years of 1921 1930 witnessed a decrease of 13.8% in the highland
counties alone. This can be explained through an increase in emigration, loss of life from World
War One and a general decline in agriculture. The 1920 s saw an overall increase in emigration
from Scotland, many of these came from rural areas. An explanation into rural emigration could be
in response to the land raids that were occurring during this time. Land raids were carried out
mainly by ex servicemen who were under the illusion, they would be rewarded in land for war
efforts. Therefore, showing the impact of the interwar years upon rural society in Scotland. Another

Is Scout An Important Character In To Kill A Mockingbird
Why is Scout Such an Important Character
To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most recognizable books of all time. Ever since it s July 1960
release date it has been hailed for its genius writing, relatable characters, and narration. The novel is
told through the eyes of Scout, a young girl living in the fictional Alabama town of Maycomb, and
how she develops during an important time in her childhood. Scout s character will affect the story
in many different ways. As the only narrator, all of what you know of Maycomb and its inhabitants
is through her eyes. Her childlike demeanor, strong southern accent, and personality add to the book
s charm and memorability. You will get to see her evolve as a person throughout the entire story.
Scout is not only the most memorable, but the most important.
In To Kill a Mockingbirdthe primary narrator of the story is Scout. All the characters, setting, and
plot are introduced by Scout. You will come to know these characters through her. Why is Scout as
the narrator so important? Simple, you are able to see Scout growing up facing these challenges
internally, instead of externally. Through this story, you understand her emotions and see her
learning about the world. This also demonstrates a major conflict she and her family face. She
ultimately comes to her own conclusions. We have all been kids once, so we can relate to Scout
and her dilemma. During the confrontation with Bob Ewell at the ending of the book, if Jem were

(What Causes Parkinson s, 2017). The cause of this disease still remains unknown, but there are

irreversible damage to the extrapyramidal system (Burchum Rosenthal, 2016). In the early stages of

Wilhelm Röntgen s Life And Accomplishments
Wilhelm Röntgen EmilyAnne Hart Wilhelm Röntgen won many awards including the first
Nobel Prize in Physics. He was the first scientist to win the prize in 1901. He studied under
many worldwide known scientists, most from Germany. He is mostly known for his discoveries
in electricity, mechanics, and heat. Wilhelm Röntgen was born and lived Germany, had many
discoveries, and accidentally made the discovery of the x rays. Röntgen was born in Germany
in 1845 and was an only child. Röntgen grew up in the Netherlands after his family moved there
in 1848. He received his early education at a boarding school. Then in 1861 he attended Utrecht
Technical School, but in 1863 he was expelled for some prank that he did not do. Even though he

Then in 1870 his first discovers were published in heat and gases. He then discovered the
phenomenon of the ability to occupy less space of water by the spreading of oil drops on water.
When he accidentally placed a piece of fluorescent mineral covered cardboard near his
experimental set he noticed when the cathode ray was turned on the cardboard started to glow in
the dark. He then intentionally did an experiment on this miraculous discovery. Röntgen used a
vacuum tube that is used in a cathode ray that was covered tightly with a thin black piece of
cardboard and placed it in a dark room. As a discharge on a screen covered with fluorescent
barium platinum cyanide, which was placed near the device, he recorded the bright glow. He found
out that the fluorescence happened by an agent which could infiltrate from within the vacuum tube.
This was impermeable to visible or ultraviolet radiation. He named the agent as x rays or Röntgen

Leigh Syndrome Essay
The first reported case of LS occurred when Denis Archibald Leigh examined a baby boy who
displayed symptoms similar to that of Wernicke s, description of W (new source) . Before the child
passed, he exhibited child: development regression, somnolence, bulbar palsy, spasticity lims.
(JNNP)
.It was only after the child had passed, that Leigh Syndrome, LS, was confirmed through a close
examination of his tissue, as there was no other effective way to confirm LS up until modern
technology began to develop. (JNNP).
Leigh Syndrome is a neurological disorder that occurs throughout the early stages of childhood
(Wiley) In infancy, symptoms may include severe vomiting and respiratory issues, as well as
failure to thrive (USEFUL). LS in infants causes death in up to 75% of those affected, by the
time they are two or three years old they experience critical organ failure (SOLACE). And as much
as 25% of LS affected people survive past their childhood which is rare but possible (SOLAC).
Symptoms of an affected person include but are not limited to ( decreasing mental and motor
function ) (Useful) LS attacks the brainstem which results in the loss of ( respiratory problems,
nystagmus, ophthalmoparesis) (Wiley)Thus, lesions are present when doctors place an affected
person in a MRI machine, which provides thorough images of organs and tissues. (JNNP) ... Show

population in either the United States or in the world since LS symptoms are often confused with
other symptoms such as the baby boy s who Leigh examined (UMDF). It is predicted that at least
one in 40,000 infants are affected with LS though this also includes those who display LS symptoms

Quarterback Cazzo Summary
What terrified both, Coach Sullivan and Quarterback Cazzo, was the sight of Headmaster Philip

Neuron Research Paper
Neuron
Anything we do as humans such as thinking, feeling, and hearing would not happen without the
neuron. The neuron sends messages throughout the body when the body is in trouble or pain. The
neuron is a part of the nervous system which makes the body move. There are only three structures
to the neuron; cell body, dendrite, and the axon. With these structures come functions to help the
body think, feel, and hear. When these functions don t work they can cause diseases in which the
body needs to be healthy to work. These are the reasons the neuron is important.
The neuron cell is a part of the nervous system. The nervous system is what makes the body think,
move, or feel pain. Functions within the nervous system are that it receives information, responds
to information, and maintains homeostasis. Homeostasis is when the body is stable. Through the
nervous system the body will receive information like what happens around the environment and it
will check what s going on inside the body. The Stimulus is any change or signal in the
environment that can make an organism react like when somebody scares you (Hall 177). The
nervous system will analyze this stimulus which will cause a response. When the nervous system

Form and Meaning of Happiness in Plato
An Analysis of the Form and Meaning of Happiness in Plato s Republic
I. Introduction
One of the central claims of Plato s Republic is that justice is not only desirable for its own sake,
but that it maximises the happiness of those who practice it. This paper examines Plato s arguments
in support of this thesis to determine (a) what he means by happiness, (b) to what extent it exists in
his proposed ideal state, and (c) whether this in any way substantiates his claims about the benefits
of justice. In particular, I will argue that there are two different conceptions of happiness at play in
The Republic, and two methods of achieving its highest form, namely the pursuit of justice and
philosophy, before arriving at a final definition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, although this provides us with a way of categorising pleasure, it does not bring us any
closer to a theory of happiness, as there is no suggestion that it too has three different forms. From
this I conclude that Plato considers the notion of pleasure to be insufficient as an explanation of
happiness, and that these instead represent two different, but interrelated, concepts.
III. Happiness and Justice
In order to fully appreciate what Plato means by eudaimonia, we must instead consider the ways
in which it is supposedly achieved: namely, through the twin pursuits of justice and philosophy.
The first argument for this thesis is found at the end of Book 1 (352d 354a) where Socrates
states that everything has both a characteristic function and a virtue (or excellence) that enables it
to perform its function well. He goes on to say that living is the function of the soul, and justice
its characteristic excellence, from which it follows that the just man lives well and is therefore
happy. This is a classic piece of Socratic wordplay that relies upon a disputed, question begging
premise (justice being the virtue of the soul), two unsubstantiated assumptions (that the soul has
both a function and an excellence) and equivocation ( to live well is the same as to be happy ), all
of which renders it

The reason for the subsidies of these stadiums over recent years has been the incredible cost of

By the time construction of a new stadium commences, construction jobs of all types have been
created, from welders to painters, from foremen to day laborers. Many of the workers needed for
the new construction projects are not local and will typically move temporarily or permanently
into the communities as construction can take years to complete. The moves can generate an
increase in local and state tax dollars from hotel lodging, home sales and spending on items
necessary for daily living such as clothing, food, gas and entertainment. When searching for
funding for these stadiums and workers to construct the project, many cities opt to subsidize the
cost. Subsidizing is when the city makes use of tax payer funds to help limit the private cost of the
project. However, many economists say that the subsidies are not beneficial to the average
taxpayer. In spite of all of these economic arguments, economists generally oppose subsidizing
professional sports stadiums (Wolla). Many economists agree that, Providing state and local

The Ponzi Scheme and Mental Illness Essay
The Ponzi Scheme and Mental Illness
December 26 1919 Charles Ponzi borrowed $200 to buy some office furniture. By January 1920
he then began telling the people of Boston how he could buy stamps and sell them overseas and
give them a 50% return on their investment in 45 days and 100% return in just 90 days. The
people came so fast he was able to pay returns of 100% in just 45 days. The word spread quickly

to shut him down again. He was then sentenced to one year in jail for violating securities laws.
Ponzi faked is death and sneaked on to a ship as a dish washer. He eventually told someone who he
was and was captured several months later in Galveston Texas. Ponzi served 9 years in prison and
was deported to Italy October 7 1934 with only $70 in his pocket.

Jiro Dream
Jiro Dreams of Sushi
Jiro Dreams of Sushi is an American documentary directed by David Gelb. The film follows the
story of Jiro Ono, an 85 year old sushi master and his two sons, Yoshikazu, and Takashi, both of
whom are also sushi chefs. For 40 years Jiro, a three Michelin Star chef, has been crafting
immaculate sushi in a ten seat restaurant on the second floor of a Tokyo subwaystation. Sukiyabashi
Jiro is small, and to savor the 20 piece menu of sushi, customers must pay 30,000 yen (368 dollars)

culinary practice and work ethics. Apprentices must work long hours with modest income, but
the reward lies in the craft itself. The modern socio cultural perception overlooks such belief.
Western culture is more inclined towards making quick money in the shortest period of time.

success means much more. As Yoshikazu explains, Always look beyond and above yourself.
Always try to improve on yourself. Always strive to elevate your craft. That s what he taught me

yet he considers his craft his reward in life. His expression of self dedication never waivers. His

North Korea Autocracy
Throughout our entire history there has been a prefered way of command. In the early stages of
civilizations, an autocracy was preferred. Now in the Modern Age, Democracy is favored. With
more globalization now than there ever was, the normal citizens of the State have more economic
influence. Democracy is the worst form of governmenton earth except for all the rest (Winston
Churchill) Like Churchill, I also think that Democracyis the prefered type of government for the
world we live in today because it leads to more economic growth. Democracy is a type of
government where the population of the State votes for the policies. Democratic Government can
be a pure Democracy, Republic or any mix of those two. Typically in a Democracy the policies
favor the public, like tax proportional to your income. Policies like that often give incentive for
innovations and trade, which, leads to growth of the State. Focus on Economicswhen investigating
is crucial. Take North Korea for example, they have a absolute monarchy. Due to that and the
hostility from the North Korean Government, there is little to no trade with that State. From what
we know about North Korea, they are far less medically advanced. Their literacy rate is also lower
than similar States like South Korea. With no solid... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

government have a positive goal for their future, then there is little harm done. The main difference
between Democracy and Oligarchy is that in an Oligarchy there is a higher incentive for the

Nonconformity As A Social Norm Essay
The social norm that I have decided to violate was the norm of drinking a beverage from a
regular bottle. I wanted to choose this one because many people find it completely normal to see
others drinking from a regular bottle with a recognizable brand name on it, and I wanted to see
how people would react if I drank out of something more unconventional. In order to violate this
norm, I bought a Windex spray bottle, dumped out the contents, then made sure to clean it

If I were to keep going against conformity and continue to drink Powerade out of a Windex bottle
with no explanation in the future, then it is very possible that people would try to avoid me and
I would be rejected from social groups. In society, social norms are important because they help

Timbuk2: Outsourcing, Offshoring and Mass Customization Introduction: Timbuk2 was founded in
1989 by Rob Honeycutt, a San Francisco bike messenger. Honeycutt wanted to develop a messenger
bag that was rugged enough for everyday wear and tear, but chic enough to set a fashion trend. The
company founded its success based on its lean manufacturing and mass customization principles.
With many of the American companies now outsourcing their manufacturing processes to China, it
became hard for Timbuk2 executives to ignore the labor cost benefits that Chinese manufacturing
would provide. Dealing with different channels (wholesale/retailers, e commerce, etc), Timbuk2

According to the case, the labor costs for mass customization is about 10% higher than labor costs
for large batches or traditional manufacturing. In order for mass customization to work, Timbuk2
will need to determine how many color palettes, design patterns and the types of logos to offer
their customers. Overall their challenge for mass customization is to determine whether or not
their machines and workforce is capable of manufacturing the design the customer specified. Mass
customization and variety can also lead to higher potential for errors. Errors in manufacturing can
lead to higher labor cost; the time and money it would take to correct the order is a potential threat
to their profitability. One of the benefits of mass customization is that Timbuk2 will provide its
customers with perceived value added to their products. The customer can design his/her own bag
according to his/her preference, which adds the value of uniqueness to the product. Considering the
mass customization option, one needs to consider the inventory in stock. With customization,
Timbuk2 s manufacturing department can actually work with less finished good inventory, since
the inventory is sent off as soon as it s finished. They will have less finished goods inventory in
stock, which will in turn allow them to offer certain, stocked products at a reduced price. Due to its
mass customization practices already in place, it shows that if Timbuk2 were to offer

The American Dream is the dream that regardless of where you are born or what social class you
are born into, anyone can attain their own version of success. In The Great Gatsby and The Pursuit
of Happyness , both protagonists pursue the path to achieving their American Dream. For both Jay
Gatsby and Christopher Gardner they are both given unfortunate privileges to where they start
their journey. Both men are lower class citizens who make less than minimum wage salaries but
that do not stop them from wanting to succeed. Chris story begins in a small apartment in San
Francisco. Chris Gardner is a black man with a minimum wage job, who lives with his wife
Linda and his 5 year old son Christopher. One day, his wife leaves him because of his lack of
income and motivation to provide for the family. That day, Chris devotes his life and his son s
life to a successful future. Chris and his son are pushed to their limits in the hope that Chris will

in his story. He was born James Gatz in Louisville, Kentucky, to a couple who owned a poor

just to have a decent source of income. He was a lonely little boy who lacked motivation to do

Capital Punishment
Capital Punishment
Murder, a common occurrence in American society, is thought of as a horrible, reprehensible
atrocity. Why then, is it thought of differently when the state government arranges and executes a
human being, the very definition of premeditated murder? Capital punishment has been reviewed
and studied for many years, exposing several inequities and weaknesses, showing the need for the
death penalty to be abolished.
Upon examination, one finds capital punishment to be economically weak and deficient. A common
misconception of the death penalty is that the cost to execute a convicted criminal is cheaper than
to place a convict in prison for life without parole. Due to the United States judicial system, the
process of appeals, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whatever they need, they can get (Cummings).
In addition to being racially prejudiced, capital punishment places innocent lives at risk. Recently
in Chicago, a black man was released from death row after nearly sixteen years in prison. This
man, Anthony Porter, came within two days of receiving a lethal injection, until the courts
finally agreed hearing on his mental capacity. Porter was very lucky to receive an excellent
attorney who managed to prove that Porter was innocent and led the police to a prisoner in
Milwaukee who confessed (Kile). This shows the importance of the appeal process found in the
courts, which serve to protect the lives of innocent citizens of the United States of America. A
writer for The Christian Century writes, quot;Porter s case brings to light the very real danger that
overzealous prosecutors, sloppy legal work and poor legal defense teams will send people to their
deaths for crimes they didn t commit, quot; (Kile). If Porter had an equipped defense attorney from
the start, he would never have been to prison and nearly killed. Ryan Cummings of The Economist
observed that more crimes are punishable by execution, more states have adopted the death penalty
and the appeals process has been shortened. The overall expansion of capital punishment endangers
innocent lives. Cumulatively, there is now less time and fewer tools to save innocent men and
women

Crime And Media Analysis
The media has a tendency to vilify the perpetrator in order to gain more attention from the readers
and they do this by leaving things out of their report. The types of information that tend to be
excluded from media accounts of criminal behaviour are those that would explain why the crime
was committed. Such as, the type of situation the individual was in, whether they were in the
correct state of mind, and/or what led the accused person to commit the offence. The textbook had
a great example of how the media fails to give the audience an alternative reasonable explanation

Comparision Of Hamlet With Rosencrantz And Guildenstern...
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (R and G...) by Tom Stoppard is a transformation of
Shakespeare s Hamlet that has been greatly influenced due to an external contextual shift. The
sixteenth century Elizabethan historical and social context, accentuating a time of questioning had
specific values which are transformed and altered in Stoppard s Existential, post two world wars
twentieth century historical and social context. The processes of transformation that are evident
allow the shifts in ideas, values and external contexts to be clearly depicted. This demonstrates the
significance of the transformation allowing new interpretations and ideas about reality as opposed

Claudius character demonstrates the theme of appearance or reality in Act One, through adopting
an act as though he is grieving the loss of his brother. This is demonstrated in the line, and that it
us befitted/to bear our hearts in grief, and our whole kingdom/ to be contracted in one brow of woe .
However, his tone of sorrow is really an appearance, as it was Claudius himself who murdered
Hamlet Senior. This is proven in Claudius soliloquy, the second climax to the play when he is
praying. O, my offence is rank; it smells to heaven...a brother s murder . His tone is filled with
guilt and it is here the value of truth is displayed. Elizabethan s would have seen Claudius deception
and value the truthfulness of this climactic soliloquy, in a social context that recognised sin and
believed in God s punishment and reward.
This is juxtaposed by Stoppard in R and G... through using the Player to proclaim that everyone is
acting. When Guildenstern asks the Player aren t you going to change into your costume? the
Player replies I never change out of it, sir . This concept symbolises how life is a continual
pretence and we all play act the life roles that are predetermined.
Hamlet also uses the players to determine the reality of the ghost reflecting how he is questioning
reality in general. This can be linked with Guildenstern s [Guil] speech in R and G ... about the
unicorn and Guil, along with Hamlet,

Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. 1 John 4:7. This was stated by Jesus Christ,
the basis for the christian faith. It is reasonable to say that acts of love don t make others kill

within the community, to bring them into the fellowship that promotes better mental health. There
are already many churches working towards improving the way the church treats it s adolescence,
and many others that march along side homosexuals in movements for equality. Those working at

Ad Analysis
Ad Analysis It happens once a month. It lasts for five to seven days. It is a time when a female
becomes physically, emotionally, and mentally affected. It has been known to be a women s worse
nightmare. It s the infamous menstrual cycle. The only thing that makes this time manageable is a
good, reliable tampon. The Tampax Pearl ad persuades buyers to purchase their product through
role models, settings, and props. The ad context is directed towards the teenage female population.

cheerleaders. They are all dressed in matching uniforms with blue and white tops, white skirts, and

I can relate to being a teenage girl. Fearing the worse, that someone will see evidence that my
monthly visitor has arrived. The text in the ad lures in females. When you look at the text you
see some in a soft pastel pink. The ad contains a package of tampons with a heart shape on the
box. The heart gives the feeling of sensitivity and is appealing to female emotions. All women
can relate to the feeling of menstrual cycles. Most women feel sluggish, and bloated with water
weight. With the font being very tall and stick like, it takes away the feeling of bloating and gives
more of a tall and slender feel. The words used in the ad are also very persuasive. When thinking
of a menstrual cycle, the words that come to my mind are dirty, bothersome, and bulky. The ad
clearly changes my mind by using such words as protection, clean, carefree, small and compact.
The brand Tampax has been around for several years. The fact that they have a product they now
call Tampax Pearl is a clever way to advertise, as many consumers relate pearl to the color white
and the color white to cleanliness. In order for Tampax to persuade consumers to buy their product
they effectively used popular teenage role models, genuine settings, props, and context that is
clearly relatable to teenage girls. Good advertising approaches like role models and relatability help
consumers to make tough decisions when picking one brand over another. With this ad

Environmental Characteristics of Net Zero
Weekly assignment Topic: Environmental characteristics of Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB)
1000 words research essay
A net zero energy building has a system to immensely reduce the total energy of a building by
implementing energy efficient technologies which gives counterbalance to the functional energy
needs supportive with renewable energy thus reducing the total energy consumption to roughly
zero. Zero energy buildings have certain characteristics, such as effective thermal insulation, using
renewable energy and using important passive strategies and energy control systems.
(P.Torcellini.2006)
The first character to highlight is effective thermal insulation, which depicts the glass walls, walls
windows, doors and roofing systems fully reinforced with low emissivity and solar control
strategies. And the adaptation of insulation methods in terms. This comprises of various insulation
properties in different weathers reducing cooling and/or heating loads (J.Eshraghi et al.2014). One
of the systems accounted for effective building insulation is the closed cell spray polyurethane
foam (ccSPF) which is used to spray on walls and roofing systems to achieve control of building
temperature and indoor thermal comfort (Building Science.2014). Therefore, effective thermal
insulators acts as air barriers and provide more controllable environments. Furthermore reduces the
building s energy consumption and energy loss. In addition it also which reduces moisture intrusion

I am writing this to express my humble appreciation for selecting me for the LeGrand Ware

spooked my teachers with how much joy I had the rest of that day. Before receiving the news of
my selection for this scholarship, I was unsure of my academic future. Much like most American
teens, I am not in a good financial place to completely pay for my tuition at Gardner Webb this
upcoming semester and would have to resort to using student loans which would have taken years
to completely pay off. With that being said, this scholarship will help me immensely with keeping
out of debt while I am here at Gardner Webb. As I mentioned in my essays and in the interview,

Artificial Intelligence In Traditions By La Maquina
Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processed by machines, especially
computer systems in which can ran as robots. AI systems are programmed of acquisition of
information and rules for using the information to reach approximate or definite conclusions.
There are various applications of AI expert systems, some include speech recognition and
machine vision. In the story of Traditions, we are introduced with La Maquina, a AI robot who
lives with a Mexican household family who serves as a maid essentially. Y Mira, you re
interested in cooking, in being a curandero, in learning her ways (Gonzales, Kindle). The writing
style in the story is engaging because of Gonzales focus on Mexican culture and traditions in this
futuristic world. I believe in cases like these this benefits the family in functional aspect of living.
Having a robot/assistant perform tasks around the house can be very helpful. Such as cleaning,
babysitting, cooking this can allow for us humans to focus on more important things such as trying
to live a healthy lifestyle and focusing on school or work. In the prologue to this story, the author
talks about incorporating their tradition to today s world. There is a rising conflict between Mictan
and her grandmother. Grandma wants Mictan to live a certain life but does not agree to what she
ultimately thinks about it. The robot seems to have a high performance technology because of her
communications and abilities we notice right away,

The Thousand And One Nights And The Decameron
Women used to be seen as below men and were not given equal opportunities that men were.
Authors started to write books and stories to show that women can be put in situations where they
break adversity and show their worth against men. Men used to believe that they were above
women at all times and that no matter what they could do what they would like to a womanand not
be questioned, and this is where genderroles and social norms started to be a huge factor in
everyday life. In both the thousand and one nights and the Decameron, women are seen as not
worthy of much and are seen as being downgraded in many situations. Even though certain social

In the Decameron, women are viewed as powerless, but if the reader reads between the lines they
will see that women hold most of the power because the wife still gets her way and the husband is
left alone. The roles are evident for both men and women and that is whatever the man wants
usually is what happens, except for the suicide attempt. In both the Decameron and the thousand
and one night s women have certain roles set about women, which include that women are under
men and should always do what the man says.
In the thousand and one nights, women can be seen as degrading themselves while doing the act
of cheating. After King Shahrayar witness his wife cheating on him, he told his brother that No
one is safe in this world. Such doings are going on in my kingdom and in my very palace. Perish
the world and perish life! (560) This proved that he did not respect women anymore because his
wife was cheating on him in his own area, and this was a representation of his wife degrading
herself since she looked for other sources of love and feelings. The action of cheating showed that
women cheat on their husbands to take revenge because of the unfair and unrightfully treatment
that they are put through. After the cheating, the King sees down on women because of how he
was treated. This

Homelessness Of Philadelphia And Pennsylvania
Homelessness Effecting Pennsylvania
In Philadelphia, homelessness is all around. On every street in the city, there will most likely be
a homeless person asking for money or sleeping on the ground owning little to nothing.
Homelessness is not only a major problem in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania but entirely the
United States. There are so many people living on the streets, in abandoned houses, and even
cars. The majority of homeless people are veterans, drug addicts, unemployed people, people
who have a mental illness and teenagers who have ran away. The best solution to getting people
off the streets and able to work, make money and living in a house or apartment that they can
afford is for the state to give more money to homeless shelters and organizations. If the state of
Pennsylvania gave more money to homeless shelters, the shelters would be able to open up their
doors to more homeless people and help them get back on track. The shelters would also be able
to build more shelters so they can eventually get all of homeless people off the streets. They would
be able to hire more people to help out with their mission and teach the homeless way in a crash
course of getting their life together. For the drug addicts, there would be rehab offered to the
homeless and it would then eliminate not only homelessness in itself but also drugs on the streets.
With such astonishing numbers, homelessness has increased within the last few years like never
before. There are more homeless

This is wrong and disrespectful because she claimed that she loved him, and does not have the common decency to show up and pay her respects. Despite Daisy being a dislikeable character, there are some instances in which the reader feels sympathetic towards her. A big factor is the affair that Tom has with Myrtle. Daisy knows that what her husband is doing, but she still stays with him for the fact that they have a daughter together and for financial support. When Nick first sees Daisy s daughter, she says, I m glad it s a girl. And I hope she ll be a fool that s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool. By this she means that if her daughter is in the same position she is in her marriage, she won t know of the affair that her husband might have. • 3. Essay The Political Ethos of the Civil Society The Political Ethos of the Civil Society ABSTRACT: Totalitarian political systems in the socialist countries of Eastern Europe destroyed and repressed the civil society that used to exist in them. The authoritarian and totalitarian ethos was formed under a powerful influence of ideologies of the communist parties and politocracy in these countries so that the political ethos of politicians dominated the political ethos of the citizen. The breakdown of the real socialism and its unsuccessful attempts to complete accelerated liberal modernization of these societies caused turbulence of social values in addition to the general moral chaos. The moral crisis has deepened; anomie increased as well as the society s inclination to commit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the seventies of the twentieth century the term civil society was used by the opposition and dissident groups in the socialist countries to denote the strategy of political fight against totalitarianism by forming autonomous institutions beyond the state control and for the sake of establishing a democratic society as opposed to the total state. By redefining the modern concept of the civil society a new and contemporary concept of the civil society has been created as an alternative to authoritarian socialism. Thus, a new practical and theoretical political paradigm has been set up for explaining ways of the transition of socialist, authoritarian and stagnant societies into democratic and civil societies which are able for self development and are willing to use the civilization achievements of the developed societies as well as the achievements of social and political philosophy and contemporary sciences. The civil society is most often determined as autonomous pluralism of private and public activities, beyond the state control, expressed in individual freedom, local and regional self rule, citizens participation in public affairs and social movements as well as in cultural autonomy and free trade unionism. In the former socialist countries the civil society was destroyed and repressed by state measures. In order to restore it, it is necessary to de etatize all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Theme Of Lysistrata Reading the story about Lysistrata made me think hard about what is the best title to replace the original. The new title that best reflects its theme, Desire of Women Between the War. Lysistrata, tells a story of women that are tired seeing their men going to war and are not pleasuring their ladies. These women from the Athens and Sparta decided to have a meeting to discuss how to punish the men who are going to the Peloponnesian War. Aristophanes explains to the women that war and territorial aggression are substitutes for sex and vice versa (Aristophanes 783). I thought the story was about sex because of so many back and forth sexual statements that were said in the story, but the women weren t punishing the men for the touch of their husband.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of the women didn t desire to end the war, even though they knew it from the beginning or not. In this story Lysistrata and the other women in the room made a decision that the men didn t agree with, these women wanted to achieve their goal by withholding sex, even though it was radical but it works, it got the job done by ending the war and the men think about what they most desire when they come home to their wife with pleasure all night. Renaming the story Desire of Women Between the War gives the audience a little idea of what the story captures, what Lysistrata and the women truly desire, which is the attention of their husbands, peace, equality, and family all together in one piece. Unlike the original topic, Lysistrata, it means Dissolver of Armies (Aristophanes 783), and for me, I thought of only the story would take place in war and not what about women going on strike on sex until the war is ... • 5. Project Manager s Role On Construction Project Essay Part 1. Investigation 1.The project manager plays a vital role on the construction project, from the very beginning of its initiation and planning to execution, to completion and handing over the complete project to the client. The project manager identifies and select the discrete processes to meet the project objective and target, considering the constituting inputs and outputs for the process (Project Management Institute, 2013). The project manager should be perceptive, well informed and should show keenness to the project for its timely delivery, under the targeted cost, reliable and durable quality, as projects are financial investments and a successful project gains the trust of client (Heerkens, 2014). The project manager is required to perform better than the past, which would be achieved by learning by doing. The project manager will not be able to complete the project without a team. The project manager should make a team and take all the responsibility like a team leader for the successful delivery of the project (Heerkens, 2014). Before starting the project, the project manager should breakdown the project into measurable tasks, inter linking the tasks, allocating time to each task, assigning tools, techniques, human resources to each tasks for its successful completion (Tinnirello, 1999). 2.The project management processes consists of discrete and identifiable elements, and activities. • 7. The Mexican War Of Mexico The Mexican War Starting in 1845 and concluding in 1850 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was the era where the Mexican war occurred. This war had triggers with disagreements on the ideal of Manifest Destiny and major actions by President Polk that led the United States into attempting to annex Texas. Texas at that time was independent and was not part of Mexico nor America. Mexico wanted Texas to stay neutral that they threatened a war to the United States if they tried anything to attempt anything. Unfortunately, the United States did not really care by going forward with the annexation and land conquering, sparking a war with Mexico. So the Mexican war began and nothing was ever the same. The annexation of Texas was the biggest reason as to what started the tension and the foreseen war between Mexico and the United States. When Texas gained its independence from Mexico, the United States considered it as open land where as Mexico thought of it as its own. It started with President Tyler, who did not want Britain to gain Texas, therefore proposed an annexation. Not only would the gain of Texas add more land to the United States, but the south wanted it as well because it would be considered as another slave state. Mexico threatened war if Texas was annexed but once part of it was they did nothing about it, leaving tension between the United States and Mexico. • 8. Character Analysis Of Deborah From Soldier s Secret Deborah from Soldier s Secret is characterized through indirect characterization. She is shown to be a stubborn person through her words, thoughts, and through other characters. Deborah shows her stubbornness through her thoughts. This is can be shown through her tendency to not accept things, like on page 36: I will be in loco parentis, the deacon said importantly, rubbing his hands. That is latin for in place of your father. Oh, no you won t, I thought. Never! Even after her mother had told her that her father was a bad man, Deborahdidn t change how she felt about him. When a new man stepped into her life to take place as her father , she refused to accept it. She was stubborn and would not let anyone take her father s place in her heart, no matter what. Deborah challenges almost anything she doesn t agree with, even if she knows it is best. Never! I resolved. I ll die before I let him dig into me that way. I was determined even though I could not shut out the pictures of untreated wounds: sores, running pus, scabs, flies. My injuries would surely become infected. And then what? No matter. (138) Though Deborah knew what would happen to her bullet wounds if she did not get medical help, she continued to lie to the doctor about not having any injuries. Deborah knows that things will turn out badly if she does not give in, but since she is so stubborn she refuses to get her wounds treated. Through her thoughts, Deborah is indirectly shown to be stubborn. Other character s words also reveal that Deborah is stubborn. Deborah s fellow soldiers can easily see her stubbornness. Because, Mike said, this lad s stubborn as a mule. They tried but he just wouldn t go. He swore to them that his folks skin always colored this way when they were sick, and it was a natural thing. (5) Deborah had refused to go to any doctor, even though she knew she was deathly ill. Her fellow soldiers saw this and tried to get her to go to the hospital, but she continued to dismiss their concerns. One of her comrades then tells the others about her obvious stubbornness. Characters who have barely met her can see signs of her unbending look on things. He stared at me hard but did not reproach me for my challenge. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Bicameral Legislature Dbq Essay The US should stick with a bicameral legislature as opposed to moving to a unicameral legislature. The advantages of a bicameral legislature surpasses those of a unicameral legislature. A bicameral legislature allows for one chamber to be closer to its constituents. In addition, a bicameral legislature allows house and senate members to have distinct jobs which distributes the workload instead of putting it all in the hands of a single chamber. It also makes it so that it is less likely for a flawed bill to be passed. For those reasons, the US should keep a bicameral legislature. A benefit of a bicameral legislature is that constituents get better representation through the House of Representatives. According to Document B, the House of Representatives is meant to be closer to its constituents while the Senate focuses on being the more deliberate chamber. Basically, House members specialists while Senators are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This means that the two chambers are the same thing. Senators and House members may be elected the same why, however, they do not share the same responsibilities as said in Document E. This is important because the document is inferring that having one chamber is the same thing as having two but it isn t because each chamber has its own duties. They both play a role in passing legislation however, they do have some distinct jobs. For example, the Senate has the power to approve treaties. • 10. Taking a Look in Tay-Sachs Disease The cell is the basic unit of life in eukaryotic organisms. The inside of the cell is comprised of multiple subunits called organelle that all function together to maintain homeostasis and function. Each individual organelle is assigned a specific task and purpose for the cell. These tasks and purposes can range from structural support all the way to the disposal of malfunctioning organelle.1 Similarity to a machine, if one part stops functioning to full potential, serious if not fatal consequences can be faced. A shining example of the effects of a malfunctioning organelle occurs in Tay Sachs disease. Tay Sachs disease is a lysosomal disorder that is caused by a faulty lysosome.1 Recent studies and research have been investigating the causes and pathways Tay Sachs disease with great success, which is amazing news for the scientific community. Lysosomes are membranous sacs of enzymes that are typically are involved in the digestion of cellular macromolecules. They are made by both the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi complex. Lysosomes have various roles, including the recycling of the cell s organic material and in the intracellular digestion of macromolecules. The digestion of macromolecules is carried out through an intense concentration of enzymes. To be specific, lysosomes contain close to 50 different degrading enzymes that are capable of hydrolyzing proteins, DNA, RNA, polysaccharides, and lipids within the cell.1 All of lysosomal enzymes are acid hydrolases, ... When the NCLB Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush on January 8, 2002, it was supposed to represent a new beginning in providing quality schooleducationto young people who come from low income families and who have special needs. Unfortunately, these mandates did not produce the type of results supporters of the law had hope for. Rather, they taught educators to see accountability as unserious and political (Bell and Hess). The law produced false positives, resulting in mediocre to poor performances on standardized tests, more public school takeovers and/or overhauling of school districts, controversial teacher reforms, dependence on standardized test preparation rather than classroom content instruction, and increased academic wrongdoings (e.g., changing of student grades and test taking fraud). In 2015, Congress in both chambers passed a new education law, Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), designed to fix some of the flaws under NCLB. The ESSA was signed into law by President Barack Obama on December 10, 2015. This law shifted most of the responsibility of education policy and school accountability from the federal government to the states. However, the law modified but did not eliminate provisions relating to the periodic standardized tests given to students ( Every Student Succeeds Act ). On the legal front, there have been remarkably very few legal challenges to NCLB. However, a few states and special interest groups have tried to get some of the mandates taken out because they were unconstitutional and/or created a financial burden on school districts across the country. Essay on The Concept of Moral Panics The Concept of Moral Panics A moral panic is said to occur when the media mobilises public opinion around the condemnation of deviance ( Media coverage of deviance: moral panics , lecture handout, 07 10 02). Deviance, in this context, refers to the violation of social norms and values, and the subsequent disruption of social order. This essay will begin with a clarification of the terms moral panic and deviance and outline how the two concepts are related. It will then describe the processes of news reporting while making reference to Stanley Cohen s established case study of the 1964 Bank Holiday fracas in Clacton, England as an example of such a media fuelled moral... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Leslie Wilkins in her extract titled Information and the definition of deviance (Cohen and Young, 1974, p.36) supports this relativist view and uses culture to illustrate how deviance is subjective. She explains how many cultures prior to Western contact held definitions of normality which were out of accord with existing Western values. However, once the cultures made contact, the Western interlopers would redefine the indigenous cultures perceptions of normality and deviance. Thus, distinct value systems do exist, but the more powerful groups in a society routinely impose their own values on others. The mass media is a crucial influence on the public perception of deviance. When it focuses on deviance, it shapes opinions on what constitutes deviant behaviour and provides a symbolic cement for a consensus of values ( Media coverage of deviance: moral panics , lecture handout, 07 10 02). And as previously stated, when the media s focus on such deviance instigates a vehement public denunciation of the associated problem , it is said to be encouraging moral panic. In his study Folk Devils and Moral Panics , Stanley Cohen suggests that a moral panic often occurs when a condition, episode, person or group of persons emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests ... Margaret Mahler s Theory Of Separation Individuation Margaret Mahler s theory of separation individuation suggests that healthy psychological development is based on the child s ability to gradually separate his or herself from the mother to form an individual identity (Flanagan, 2011). There are four phases of development that a child will go through to attain this individuation: the autistic phase, the symbiotic phase, and separation individuation proper (Flanagan, 2011). The author can assume that Antonio completed his autistic phase successfully, as he can successfully distinguish between pleasure and pain (Robbins, Chatterjee, Canda, 2011). In addition to this, the case vignette states that he was a healthy baby to whom Hilda was very attentive. Antonio s symbiotic phase, when the child and the motherare at their most complete union, seems to have progressed without major incident as well; Hilda was attentive to Antonio s needs and would respond positively to her voice with a head turn and a smile (Flanagan, 2011). The next phase, separation individuation proper, includes four sub phases: differentiation, practicing, rapprochement, and on the way to object constancy (Flanagan, 2011). It is within these sub phases that Antonio is static; because of the abusive reactions of his father, Daniel, Hilda had to intervene during Antonio s separation individuation proper development. Instead of giving Antonio the freedom to crawl around and explore his world during the differentiation phase, Hilda picked him up for fear that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An anchor is a specific word which represents behaviors classically conditioned to evoke a specific response. This response can be cognitive or behavioral. An anchor does not need to be to be reinforced with its response and it does not need to be conditioned over a period of time. Language is a common anchoring system. For example, the word dog will be an auditory anchor to an image of four legged animal that barks, an effective anchor with little cognitive effort. The smell of a hospital or a family member screaming in anger is examples of anchors that have been unintentionally installed and they operate out of an individual s awareness and direct control. Neuro Linguistic Programming operates to install new anchors which work just as well as these unintentional anchors and work toward evoking a response that increases the behavioral flexibility of a person and it is through these anchors that changes can be made in the strategies of thought. Using NLP a therapist can establish a map of one s cognitive representation of the world and place anchors that be established in a clients strategies that provoke responses that differ from those expected using their original strategy. • 19. Scotland s Rural Economic Crisis A rural economic crisis occurred as there was a decline of people working the land. The highland population between the years of 1921 1930 witnessed a decrease of 13.8% in the highland counties alone. This can be explained through an increase in emigration, loss of life from World War One and a general decline in agriculture. The 1920 s saw an overall increase in emigration from Scotland, many of these came from rural areas. An explanation into rural emigration could be in response to the land raids that were occurring during this time. The basis of the disease revolves around a lack of dopamine and neurotransmitter, within the brain (Vaughan, 2016). Cells called Substantia Nigra that produce dopamine in the brain become damaged in individuals with this disease (What is Parkinson s Disease, 2017). The neuron sends messages throughout the body when the body is in trouble or pain. The neuron is a part of the nervous system which makes the body move. There are only three structures to the neuron; cell body, dendrite, and the axon. With these structures come functions to help the body think, feel, and hear. When these functions don t work they can cause diseases in which the body needs to be healthy to work. These are the reasons the neuron is important. The neuron cell is a part of the nervous system. The nervous system is what makes the body think, move, or feel pain. Functions within the nervous system are that it receives information, responds to information, and maintains homeostasis. Homeostasis is when the body is stable. Through the nervous system the body will receive information like what happens around the environment and it will check what s going on inside the body. Introduction One of the central claims of Plato s Republic is that justice is not only desirable for its own sake, but that it maximises the happiness of those who practice it. This paper examines Plato s arguments in support of this thesis to determine (a) what he means by happiness, (b) to what extent it exists in his proposed ideal state, and (c) whether this in any way substantiates his claims about the benefits of justice. In particular, I will argue that there are two different conceptions of happiness at play in The Republic, and two methods of achieving its highest form, namely the pursuit of justice and philosophy, before arriving at a final definition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, although this provides us with a way of categorising pleasure, it does not bring us any closer to a theory of happiness, as there is no suggestion that it too has three different forms. From this I conclude that Plato considers the notion of pleasure to be insufficient as an explanation of happiness, and that these instead represent two different, but interrelated, concepts. III. Happiness and Justice In order to fully appreciate what Plato means by eudaimonia, we must instead consider the ways in which it is supposedly achieved: namely, through the twin pursuits of justice and philosophy. The first argument for this thesis is found at the end of Book 1 (352d 354a) where Socrates states that everything has both a characteristic function and a virtue (or excellence) that enables it to perform its function well. He goes on to say that living is the function of the soul, and justice its characteristic excellence, from which it follows that the just man lives well and is therefore happy. This is a classic piece of Socratic wordplay that relies upon a disputed, question begging premise (justice being the virtue of the soul), two unsubstantiated assumptions (that the soul has both a function and an excellence) and equivocation ( to live well is the same as to be happy ), all of which renders it ... Honeycutt wanted to develop a messenger bag that was rugged enough for everyday wear and tear, but chic enough to set a fashion trend. The company founded its success based on its lean manufacturing and mass customization principles. With many of the American companies now outsourcing their manufacturing processes to China, it became hard for Timbuk2 executives to ignore the labor cost benefits that Chinese manufacturing would provide. According to the case, the labor costs for mass customization is about 10% higher than labor costs for large batches or traditional manufacturing. In order for mass customization to work, Timbuk2 will need to determine how many color palettes, design patterns and the types of logos to offer their customers. Overall their challenge for mass customization is to determine whether or not their machines and workforce is capable of manufacturing the design the customer specified. Mass customization and variety can also lead to higher potential for errors. Errors in manufacturing can lead to higher labor cost; the time and money it would take to correct the order is a potential threat to their profitability. One of the benefits of mass customization is that Timbuk2 will provide its customers with perceived value added to their products. The customer can design his/her own bag according to his/her preference, which adds the value of uniqueness to the product. Considering the mass customization option, one needs to consider the inventory in stock. With customization, Timbuk2 s manufacturing department can actually work with less finished good inventory, since the inventory is sent off as soon as it s finished. They will have less finished goods inventory in stock, which will in turn allow them to offer certain, stocked products at a reduced price. Due to its mass customization practices already in place, it shows that if Timbuk2 were to offer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
