End Of Semester Reflection. This Semester Has Been A Tough
End of Semester Reflection This semester has been a tough one but I feel like I have learned a lot
about pharmacy over these past few months. I have had a lot of courses so far and in each one, I have
been able to make connections to the practice of pharmacy. In this essay, I will reflect on some of
things I learned in my courses and how they relate to my future career as a pharmacist. I will also
identify areas where certain topics intersect in different courses.
In my pharmaceutics course, I learned a lot about drug dosage forms. One example is when I was
taught about the different kinds of inhalers and what distinguishes them from each other. I also learned
about how these inhalers deliver the drug into the target organ and ... Show more content on

Insulin is a hormone that allows the body to store glucose. Diabetes is a disease state that results from
the body not able to use insulin or the body cannot produce enough insulin. Since there is lack of
insulin in a diabetic, glucose is not able to be stored. This means that glucose remains in the body and
draws water out of cells causing dehydration. Additionally, the kidneys cannot reabsorb excess
glucose and it spills into urine causing an osmotic effect. The above problems mentioned lead to
excessive thirst and excessive urination. In a diabetic, glucose is not able to be used as a fuel source so
fatty acids and proteins are used instead. This leads to weight loss, hunger, and a loss of energy.
Biochemistry did a great job at teaching us very relevant material about pharmacy. As pharmacists, we
dispense a lot of vitamins so it is important to know why patients are taking them. It is also important
to be able to educate them if they have any questions. This goes for diabetic patients as well. Knowing
how the disease works and being able to explain it to patients is something that we have to know as
pharmacists. We must be able to answer a patient s questions about their diabetes and symptoms if
they have any.
In our ABLE lab course, we took a lot of things we learned in some of our courses and performed
hands on activities using what we learned. For example, when we learned about suppositories in
pharmaceutics, we compounded them in a lab activity. In fact, we

Death In Judaism
Not all regions where Jews live celebrate life and death in the same way. This is because Jews had to
assimilate to local cultures after they began to disperse to various parts of the world. This caused
traditions to be pushed aside all together or to be blended with local cultures (Parkes, page 99).
However, there are many core values that never faded and area consistently practiced in most parts of
the world. Death in Judaism is an important part of life. As described in Death and Bereavement
Across Cultures, Two of the most important commandments in Jewish tradition are to honor the dead
and comfort the mourner. (98) Respect for the dead is known as, kavod ha met and the comfort given
to the living is known as, nihum avelim (Rich). When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Olam ha ba or the world to come is the belief that the soul returns to God to wait to be reborn with the
coming of the Messiah. Death allows for Jewish people to value life and their short time spent on earth
(Parkes, 101). It is believed that beyond death, life does not include earthly pleasures such as eating
and drinking. After death life consists of being, in the glory of the Divine Presence. There is no hell
after death as a destination. Rather, happiness to those who lived a righteous life and suffering to those
who sinned and led others to sin. There is more of a reward versus punishment system instead of
destinations. The punishment given to those in life after death is not set in stone, it is described in the
Talmud as, vague and contradictory (Darmesteter, page 51 52). In many branches Christianity it is
believed one s soul goes to purgatory when they die and the decision is made weather your soul will
spend eternity in heaven or hell. Jewish tradition does not believe that souls end up in one of the two
destinations rather, all souls end up in the same place, it is just the journey that is different for different
individuals. When your body dies your soul leaves it and begins its journey to return to God, this
journey is considered a purification process so your soul is pure in the world to come. The purification
process for those who lived a fulfilling and righteous life may only take a day or so while those who
lived a life full of sin take a longer time on their journey to purification, taking up to a year. After this
purification process is complete Jewish tradition states that the soul is then waiting for the coming of
the Messiah when the soul will return to the physical body for final judgment (Parkes,

The Philippine Insurrection
The Philippine Insurrection of 1899 1902 was a little different than most insurgencies. Using Mao s 3
phases of an insurgency, which I will break down below.
The native demand for liberation from Spain had been building since the 1880s. In 1892 a poor
warehouseman by the name of Andres Bonifacio organized a group called the Katiunan, hoping to
drive the Spaniard s out of the Philippines. As in other insurgencies, we are seeing groups coming
together for the same objective, but not all insurgent groups get along. In 1896 after a reign of terror
against the islanders, Emilio Aguinaldo, a rival group leader, took over leadership by having Bonifacio
executed. The insurgency was forced into the hills, but the fighting continued. The people wanted
Spain out and supported an independent Philippines. In 1897 Spain paid Aguinaldo off to stop the
fighting and sent him to Hong Kong. This put the insurgency back into survival mode and brought a
temporary peace.
Aguinaldo made a pact with the United States which was at war with Spain at the time. With the
assistance of Commodore Dewey they were able to have a decisive victory over the Spanish in
Manila. June 12th then became Philippine Independence Day in 1898. The Americans seemed
reluctant to leave and in December Spain formally ceded the Philippines to the United States in the
Paris Peace Treaty. In January 1899 Aguinaldo staged an inauguration of the First Philippine Republic.
This was an uneasy peace, because what was

Pilates Video Analysis
Pilates was the group fitness culture and physical activity that was chosen. This video exercise was
very intense and I had to take many breaks to keep up with the elements of this exercise. Breathing
and getting into correct positioning were areas of the Pilates exercise that I definitely needed
improvement on. Portions of this exercise were difficult for this slightly overweight man to do. I had a
hard time with lifting, stretching, and moving my legs while lying on my back. I could see potential in
this exercise for improving the back pain of individuals. I stretched my back and stomach muscles
often and felt a slight improvement of the back pain I usually feel from time to time. The instructor in
this video explained the exercise

How Does Shaun Tan Use Visual Techniques In The Rabbits
The rabbits, an illustrative book by John Marsden and Shaun Tan, is a visually intriguing piece that
evokes empathy toward the Indigenous Australians; using a wide variety of visual literary techniques
to create a captivating, historical story. The story follows a historical look at the European colonisation
of Australia and it s devastating aftermath on the indigenous people and the land itself. Shaun Tan has
really brought the book to life with his use of visually interesting aspects such as anthropomorphic
characters, brilliant use of colour and the overall layout of the images. An excellent example of the
visual literary techniques in this book would be the They came by boat, page, which is also featured as
the front cover of the book. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The page has quite a bright, mystical styled colouring that may emphasise the fact that the rabbits are
new to the land and the numbats have never seen anything like them before. The bright off white
ground is quite a good example of a good use of colour as it symbolises the purity of the land and how
the indigenous people worked with it. The dark, almost black, shadows of the rabbits would symbolise
their take over of the land and how it is being changed and harmed by the rabbit s arrival. There is also
the difference in the sky colouring behind the boat and in front of it; that may signify the rabbit s
darker past, and the lighter more cheerful presents of the numbat s

Chaucer And The Pardoner s Tale
The Life of Chaucer and the Pardoners Tale Geoffrey Chaucer, the father of English poetry, was born
in England in 1342. He was born to a middle class family. His father was a successful wine merchant.
Because of this, Chaucer was exposed to people who hung down by the London docks, which later
effected his writing style. He eventually started to work in the royal household, where he was
respected and known. His job was to run errands for the household, but he was exposed to higher
living and became closer to those kinds of people. However, he was called to fight in 1359, when the
Hundred Years War broke out in France. It was there that he was taken prisoner sometime that year.

It was told in mead hlls until around 1000 AD, when it was finally written down by Catholic monks.
The story follows the adventures of a larger than life character named Beowulf. This character is
famous for slaying monstrous beasts, having incredible strength, and qualities considered optimal in
the world of the Germanic tribes. Beowulf relates to Herricks poem because like many of the warriors
in his day, they held Epicurean beliefs. The Germanic people believed that death is final and that there
is no afterlife. Their warriors were only interested in finding treasures of their enemies and honor from
their king. They fought to earn riches and armor and any other thing that they desired. Beowulf was
one of these men as well. When he killed the beast Grendel, he took his arm and hung it from the
rafters for everybody to see. When he went to kill the Dragon, he knew that he would not be coming
back from the battle alive. He said that if he died, he wanted a massive tower built to him to honor
him. In the battle with the dragon, he is mortally wounded. As he is dying, he tells his friend Wiglaf to
bring over the dragons treasure so he can see it before he dies. This proves perfectly that Beowulf and
his fellow warriors are concerned with earthly things (riches) and enjoy earthly things. This relates to
the poem because the poem talks about making use of our time

Frailty In Geriatric Patients
While various objective tools have been validated for assessing frailty in the geriatric population,
these are often unsuitable for busy clinics and mobility impaired patients. Although we have
developed the Frailty Meter (FM) using two wearable sensors for frailty assessment during a 20
second repetitive elbow flexion and extension task, there is a dearth of information regarding an
automatic algorithm for identifying frailty with a practicality for mHealth application. In this study,
we proposed a practical wrist type FM based on a wearable inertial sensor with an optimal algorithm
for assessing frailty regardless of patients information including age, gender and body mass index.

How Did Erasmus Change During The Renaissance
Renaissance was the period of great changes and was characterized by a revision of many concepts.
The churches during the renaissance was being questioned by many scholars and one of the greatest
scholar of this period Desiderius Erasmus, a Christian humanist and the second scholar was a monk
from Germany named Martin Luther. The scholar Desiderius Erasmus was a dedicated Christian and
advocated reforms within the church and spread the idea of pacifism. He questioned the church in
many ideas and stated that people should live their own life and not always thinking about being
saved. For example He believed that baptism should be by full immersion and should come only after
one had accepted Christ as his personal Savior. He continued to assault erroneous Catholic Church
practices and because of some of his literatures works he was charged as a Lutheran by Catholic
Church authorities. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

reformer and who questioned the Catholic Church during this period. Both Martin Luther and Erasmus
agreed that the church needed to have some reforms but challenged each other on certain issues.

stakeholders in Bharti Airtel include Sony Ericsson, Nokia and Sing Tel, with whom they hold a
strategic alliance. This means that the business has access to knowledge and technology from other
parts of the telecommunications world. * The company has covered the entire Indian nation with its

Weaknesses
* An often cited original weakness is that when the business was started by Sunil Bharti Mittal over 15
years ago, the business has little knowledge and experience of how a cellular telephone system
actually worked. So the start up business had to outsource to industry experts in the field. * Until
recently Airtel did not own its own towers, which was a particular strength of some of its competitors
such as Hutchison Essar. Towers are important if your company wishes to provide wide coverage
nationally. * The fact that the Airtel has not pulled off a deal with South Africa s MTN could signal
the lack of any real emerging market investment opportunity for the business once the Indian market
has become mature.

The Career As A Musician
Music may be a universal medium, but musician are far from all being treated equally. It has become
nearly impossible to make it in the music industry, and those who do often will not succeed for very
long. Yet, it is still an illusive field and one that society depends on for entertainment. By creating
documentaries about musicians, viewers get a behind the scenes look at what being a musician truly
entails, whether it is good or bad. For Ken Vandermark, his career as a musician is a struggle, as
documented by Daniel Kraus s Musician, because of his niche genre for contemporary society.
Madonna, on the other hand, has created a career as a pop icon, as documented by Alek Keshishian s
Madonna: Truth or Dare, which may be financially successful, but is not always rewarding. Both
Kraus and Keshishian employ similar tactics for their respective documentaries; however, through the
use of different camera angles, relations to the subject, and display of live music, they are able to
provide unique insight into the artists they are following. Throughout Musician, Kraus uses multiple
camera angles in order to develop the narrative of the documentary. His two most frequently used,
extreme close ups and wide angle, are both frequently found throughout the film to create poignant
moments in the film. Extreme close ups are most commonly used while Vandermark is performing,
allowing viewers to see his unwavering focus and passion for his work. From the very beginning of
the film,

Psychedelics are an uncommon topic brought up in medicine. Because of the status of psychedelic
drugs being restricted for recreational use, in developed countries such as The United States of

Improves digestion Apple cider vinegar is useful for people suffering from digestive problem and

Of Mice And Men Movie And Book Comparison Essay
Multitudes of well known films are derived from novels; however, despite the majority of the accurate
depictions, these adaptations contain several varying scenes as compared to the book. For example,
John Steinbeck s novella Of Mice and Men and the 1992 movie version share similar elements, yet the
movie strays from the original source material. While the portrayal of the characters are accurate,
certain important segments are added or deleted. Therefore, despite the correspondence of the 1992 Of
Mice and Men movie to the novella, they re not exact representations of one another. While movie
adaptations often have inaccurate portrayals of the novel s characters, the Of Mice and Men movie is
one of the exceptions. John Malkovich does a magnificent job of portraying Lennie s childlike
mannerisms; coupled with his physical appearance, Malkovich appears to be the exact embodiment of
Lennie. One major element of Lennie s character is his mental handicap, which is shown through ...

exploitation. At the onset of the 20th century however this message began to take particular weight, as
evidenced by the tripling of the AFL s membership and the rise of the Industrial Workers of the World.
Labor unions, the Socialist Party and progressives as a whole took issue with the doctrine of Social
Darwinism and moved forward as a somewhat united front with the goal of bringing meaningful
change to American society. As America made the transition into an industrial power in the latter half
of the 19th century, Social Darwinism became a prevalent method of rationalizing massive inequality
and widespread poverty. This doctrine of leaving the poorest in the nation to uplift themselves from
abject hardship without being provided any means to do so was exemplified as the American
population became increasingly concentrated in cities. Poor families would often go without
electricity or indoor toilets. Staggering inequality continued into the Progressive era. It was estimated
that J.P. Morgan s financial firm controlled 40 percent of all financial and industrial capital in the
nation. The largest conclaves of organized labor, the Industrial Workers of the World and the American
Federation of Labor, sought to tackle the stifling economic and political climate through sharply
contrasting

Patrick Stewart s Nanot Drones
There have been many snot nosed whales a skimping the seas for too long, that is, without scientific

The Babylonian Of The Assyrian Army
This research paper is about one aspect of the ancient world that I have analyzed and the topic that I
have done this research on is the Assyrian Army. I will give a detailed analysis with precise and
concise information with well presented information with credible claims to support my paper and my
thesis statement that .The Assyrian Army was the most organized Army in the Ancient near east; they
conquered the Dark Age era with their tactical and physical nature of militant system which makes
them the best army of all time . The Worldview connection is that the Assyrian was into terror and
believed that they were immortal which shows how brutal they were. The Assyrians not only viewed
themselves as a great army but had a worldview that was set as the foundation of western civilization
which was more polytheistic. Assyria is a major Mesopotamian East Semitic kingdom and empire of
the Ancient Near East, existed as an independent state for a period of approximately nineteen
centuries, from the 25th century BCE to the 6th century BCE, spanning the mid to Early Bronze Age
through to the late Iron Age. (Humanities 26) For a short time the Assyrians became the first people to
rule both Egypt and Mesopotamia. The Assyrians came to rule powerful empires at several times. As

Agamemnon By Euripides Essay
Euripides was classic Athens. He is one of whose plays have long survived. Importantly, he was well
identified with theatrical innovation, which has profoundly influenced drama up to the modern times,
most especially in the representation of traditional, mythical heroes as the ordinary people in an
extraordinary circumstance. Apparently, was so unique among many writers of ancient Athens because
of his abundant sympathy that he demonstrated towards the victims of society, most especially being
women. Agamemnon, Orestes and Electra were the main characters in the plays. The play revolves
around the leader of Greek forces, Agamemnon, and his deadly decision to sacrifice his first daughter
Iphigenia, to preserve his honor by doing battle against ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later, Orestes killed two sons of Thestes and cut them into pieces, then served them at a banquet to
their father during an honor of his return (277). It was a horrible experience for Thyestes after
discovering what was prepared for his meal. He then went away from Argos with only his infant child
called Aegisthus after cursing both Orestes and his descendants. After the death of Orestes, the throne
was left under Agamemnon his son, who later married a daughter of Sparta s king. They bore three
children, of which one inherited his father s throne upon death. The remaining son of Orestes married
Helen, who became king of Sparta upon her father s death. Another seduction in the descendants of
Orestes occurs. Later after the wedding, Paris who was the son of Troy s king, seduced Helen then
took her away. A great force was organized to restore Helen to her husband. However, due to adverse
winds, they were unable to sail towards Troy. They appeased goddess Artemis to calm the winds by
sacrificing a young girl who arrived at the camp. They sailed to Troas but there was a lot of
justification of the murder of their mother by Orestes who was later afflicted with madness then goes
to become a spirit to hunt and punish murderers

Speech On Social Expectations
Often in their lives, individuals are plagued by unrealistic societal expectations that threaten individual
s personal moralities which lead them to act in certain ways that they would later regret. A person s
desire to be a part of a community, one in which they can feel accepted by social standards, is what
can ultimately bring them to their morality s demise. Despite having social expectations bring down
one s honour due to certain situations, it is important to remember that at times, it is not the outside
world that inherently plagues individuals, rather, it can be the individuals themselves. Social
expectations that seep into our own egos have the power to make one s own expectations into
something that can set individuals up for failure. However, as tragic as certain mistakes can be, it is
important to remember that the recovery from one s downfall is what matters the most. In order to
effectively restore honour and certainty in oneself, one must learn to take a proactive approach to their
adversities stemming from unrealistic social standards that brought them to their downfall. As human
beings require feelings of accomplishment, honour, and certainty in order to most effectively function
and achieve other feats in their lives, a proactive approach to the adversities that threaten their honour
and certainty is vital. Recently, I have been dealing with my own struggles with restoring honour in

Aca Or A Non Disclosure Agreement
Question No. 1 Part A: Answer. ACA or a non disclosure agreement is a contract between two parties
agreeing to confine information provided by one party to the other, from third parties. It is essential
for both parties to maintain trust between each other and to since BTOC is the first interested financial
investor for LOL, it is necessary that the terms are kept confidential from the market to avoid possible
damage to repute. Also, no formal contract has yet been signed between the parties; therefore, any
information being shared is not public information (Maguire, Murchison Jaeger, 2012). The
confidentiality agreement is essential to cover all proprietary assets, which includes all customer and
supplier information, intellectual property information, pricing and costing information, trademarks
and copyrights, trade secrets and all other financial statements of BTOC. The confidential agreement
must also cover the subsidiaries that the BTOC has with respect to a potential transaction which is
normally considered as the purchaser agreed not to disclose until he has made the sale process with
public. Part B: Answer. If no agreement is signed, LOL is at greater risk of information being shared
with third parties. The research material shared with BOTC for financial assistance may get to the
market before its right time. LOL can get into legal, reputational or marketing issue as it holds
potential additional information regarding the site. If there is no agreement signed

The Music Of The Song
A repetition of an upbeat piano piece, cheerful drum beats, and laughter from the audience, the
beginning of this song might lead you to believe this is a classic show tune. Nina Simone, the
songwriter and performer, certainly wants you to think this song is innocuous. She goes as far as to
describe this song as a show tune in the beginning of the lyrics. I believe, at Carnegie Hall back in
1964, she focused on this aspect of the song to let the white audience s guard down just long enough
to surprise them with a powerful message.
The song s instrumental is purposely deceptive, it s lively and repetitive. There is one subtle but
significant change in the chords during the song. As she reveals in her lyrics and tone that this is not

This grievous happening dramatically influenced Simone s views and music. She believed that non
violence was the correct way to fight prevalent racism. However, in her autobiography she mentions
how she attempted to make a home made pistol and kill somebody responsible after she saw the
incident on the news. The influence on her music was also significant. Before the bombing, Simone
concentrated her music career on folk and show tunes. However, enraged by the killings, she wrote
her first protest song, Mississippi Goddam. She wrote the song in an hour, which clearly explains the
raw rage, disappointment and disgust she displays in the lyrics (Cleary Simone, 1992).
Can t you see it? Can t you feel it? she asked to the white audience at Carnegie Hall, where the song
premiered. She expresses how she has lost faith in white America in the first verses, I don t belong
there. I ve even stopped believing in prayer. Her bluntness comes to a climax when she sings, oh, but
this whole country full of lies. You are all gonna die and die like flies. And then Simone desperately
pleads for the civil rights blacks have been denied for so long by saying, you don t have to live next to
me. Just give me my equality.
The audience and the nation was indubitably surprised by Simone s performance. Not only because of

The Rhodes Must Fall Movement
This essay will attempt to give a response of the Rhodes Must Fall writings. It is clear that the rising
of movements like Rhodes Must Fall, has been a result of a wave of philosophies of Fanon and Biko
who share a highly similar pedigree in their interests in the philosophical psychology of consciousness
and desire for a decolonising of the mind (). Their ideologies have the interest of young South
Africans. The essay will be done by looking into how the movement wants the university to be
decolonised, the statue of Rhodes, alienation the students are experiencing, curriculum change, the
university s lack of cultural space and representation of blacks, racism in the university and
social/systematic exclusion of black students. In order to understand what the movement wants to
achieve, it is relevant to provide a background of its insurgence. The Rhodes Must Fall Movement is a
collective movement of students and staff members mobilizing for direct action against the reality of
institutional racism at the University of Cape Town (The Johannesburg Salon, 2015:6) .The movement
aims to advance black students interests by ending the oppression they experience in the university
and achieving equality. It is a shame that the University of Cape Town, just like other parts of the
South African society still retain a colonial character. The Rhodes Must ... Show more content on

until I went turkey hunting. With my brothers it was frustrating, hard, and aggravating all at the same
time because of the mistakes you ll make it s a life changing experience. It ll get your blood pumping
and your heart racing you ll end up wanting to go turkey hunting more often then you think. You
might think it s a little insane to wake up at 4:30 AM adventure into the woods and get bit by bugs and

before the turkeys wake up you have to find a spot to sit at and wait and call them with a turkey call.
But there is one downfall you is can t shoot till the sun comes up that s kind of a long wait from 4:30

1984 Commentary
The second half of 1984 was good but not what I imagined. Winston meets Julia, a girl that he works
with. He thinks she work for ¨big brother¨ but when they get to know each other they both dislike big
brother. They start to do illegal things and disobey big brother without telling anyone. Another one of
their co workers named O brien invites them over. He tells them that he is against big brother and
Winston and Julia tells him that they are too. Later that night the police come and take Winston and
Julia away, O brien lied to Winston and Julia and is actually part of big brother. They get tortured until
they become under full control of big brother. Once they are under big brothers control they are put
back into the world to do nothing. I thought the end would be more exciting, I thought Winston and
Julia would actually put up a fight against big brother. The big word I chose for the second half of
1984 is innumerable. I believe that innumerable means thin or weak. The context clues that led me to
believe that are ¨They were standing in the shade of hazel bushes. The sunlight, filtering through the

Pros And Cons Of Graffiti In Toronto
Whether or not graffiti is a form of artwork or vandalism has always been a subject for debate in
Toronto. In this article, I will tell you why graffiti is in fact a form of vandalism, and that we should
try to wipe out all form of graffiti in this city. Graffiti negatively impacts societies for several reasons.
First of all, removing graffiti from walls and other structures are draining our tax funds. Money that
could be used to build parks, community centers, and schools, are instead being used to clean graffiti.
In the U.S.A, cities such as Chicago and Phoenix spend millions upon millions of dollars on graffiti
cleanup. Children are also negatively influenced by graffiti. For example, if kids see that nothing is
being done to those who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many things that we, the people, can do. For example, we could form neighborhood watch
groups to catch anyone trying to vandalize one of our houses. We could also all have a fund raiser to
buy and install security cameras around the neighborhood. And if, by any chance, our homes and
structures do get vandalized, we could organize an event were all the residents of the neighborhood all
work together to clean the graffiti. Also, if a resident witnesses someone doing graffiti, they should
immediately call the authorities. Removal of graffiti within 24 48 hours is proven to decrease the
amount of graffiti in an area, so we mustn t wait or procrastinate. We should create a new bylaw,
which heavily punishes those who vandalize other people s property, because right now, under the
current bylaw, a graffiti artist will only have to either pay a small fine or clean up his graffiti. This
bylaw is too lenient, and in order to cleanse this city from graffiti we must inflict harsh punishment.
For example, we should make them pay a hefty fine, clean up their graffiti, take away their ID card,
strip them of their passport for a short while, and send them to jail for at least a month. This might
seem too harsh but after the first handful of graffiti artists go through this no

The Jungle And Fast Food Nation Rhetorical Analysis
Relevant literature usually addresses real life situations, bringing light to serious issues. Most of the
time, an author will write in hopes to influence others to believe a certain way. Authors must strategize
to master the art of persuasion. There are multiple appeals a writer may use in order to get their point
across to the audience. The Jungle and Fast Food Nation use ethos, pathos, and logos in efforts to gain
support towards their purpose of improving the work conditions and quality of life for immigrants. In
order to convince an audience through an ethical appeal, a writer would use ethos. Ethos places an
emphasis on the credibility of the source. In The Jungle Upton Sinclair writes, In the beginning he had
been fresh and strong, and he had gotten a job the first day, but now he was second hand, a damaged
article... (Sinclair 90). Jurgis, Sinclair s character, goes from adoring capitalism to despising it. Since
he proves to be open minded, his feelings seem less biased. Once the reader observes the vicious cycle
Jurgis endures, it becomes difficult to make an argument against him. In Fast Food Nation Schlosser
states, We are human beings, more than one person told me, but they treat us like animals (Schlosser
169). Instead of just using a single source, Schlosser uses numerous. The fact that the author is
collecting stories from several different people makes the account more believable. When an author is

Legislation On Antibiotics
A letter to legislation on the use of antibiotics
Overtime, antibiotics have been favorable as well as negligent to society. Antibiotic usage is helpful to
society because it kills and fights off bacteria in both humans and animals. With an increase in
antibiotic usage, these bacteria have become resistant to certain drugs which reduce the chance of the
bacteria being killed off and result in bacteria multiplying, causing increased harm to the infected.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2013), each year in the United States
at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least
23,000 people die each year as a result to these infections. Although multiple bacteria are antibiotic
resistant, and those numbers will continue to rise, antibiotics should remain a staple in the treatment of
diseases, as opposed to abandoning their use which will cause an increase in the prevalence of
bacterial infections. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The And, The, And The Element Of A Person s Psychological...
The term fetish and the element around it can be taken as far back and before the 18th century, the
Portuguese, predominantly West African natives, referred to certain objects that were used in religious
cults and their workings during worship. These religious objects and artefacts described were mainly
used in voodoo and witch craft and were believed to be incredibly supernatural items.
From this, the concept evolved from an item or object that is seen to have magical and enchanting
powers in a more primitive situation to something closer to what we know now.

Austrian neurologist and psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud was one of the first people to address the
subject of sexual fetishism and wrote an essay on the matter. After his investigation he d come to
believe that the purpose and meaning behind an individual s fetish would always be one and the same;
The fetish is a substitute for the penis...for a particular and quite special penis that had been extremely
important in early childhood but had later been lost......It remains a token of triumph over the threat of
castration and a protection against it.
Sigmund Freud, FETISHISM (1927)
According to Freud, a person s fetish, whether it may be a material object, act or some sort of
obsessive compulsive conduct, then that person is substituting the connection to the penis that they
had emotionally lost at childhood and finding support in that object or action. The word FETISH in
fact originated from Portugal, the word feitiço which means spell . This suggests a representation of
power or power over something, in this case power over an individual and one s extreme attachment
to an object, body part or specific situation.

Essay on The Introduction of Prohibition
The Introduction of Prohibition
Prohibition was introduced in 1920 as part of an amendment to the Constitution of the USA. It was
introduced for a variety of different reasons including a wartime concern for preserving grain for food
rather than for brewing and distilling. There were also feelings against the German Americans, who
were responsible for brewing and distilling, at a time when America was at war against Germany
which also let the Anti Saloon league influence the general public before the main objectors, the men,
returned home. Even though there are many reasons for the introduction of prohibition there was only
one main consequence. It created the greatest criminal boom in American ... Show more content on

They said that buying alcohol would benefit the Germans and you would be being disloyal to your
country to purchase something that would benefit the enemy . Nevertheless, this would not stop the
large population of German Americans buying the alcohol along with many other Americans who had
come to America from other countries. An additional consideration that led people in the belief that
prohibition would succeed was the cost of alcohol so people may have used the law as an opportunity
to give up alcohol without seeming odd to others. Moreover, this problem would not prevent wealthy
Americans from trying to purchase alcohol because they had the money to do it without sending their
family into the downwards spiral of poverty. Also, to begin with the level of enforcement for the law
was so high that even if people did not support the law, the prohibition commissioners could have
worked hard to dispose of alcohol whilst gathering support. However, this hard work soon ended
when the commissioners, along with the police, politicians, magistrates, party officials and clerks,
began to accept bribes from gangsters and the owners of speakeasies to ignore the activities that were

Edward Bloor Identity Analysis
One of the major themes of the novel is Identity. I claim that Paul is struggling with how he is, and his
eyesight, which is his identity overall. Edward Bloor has developed the theme all over the story, and it
s seen in his characters, flashbacks, etc. This theme plays an important role overall in Paul s quest in
trying to grasp strength, and courage. The following are evidence, and commentary of how the theme
has been developed over the two parts.
We first get to see the first evidence of the theme in the first few pages. Edward Bloor used allegory,
and symbolism to represent Paul s past, and for Paul he refers it as a zombie since he didn t quite
know about it yet. Paul refers his past as a zombie since he can t put it to a rest nor ... Show more

Though the flashbacks aren t in order, we got to see how Paul was in the past, and his commentary in
the present. When Paul was testing out his peripheral vision, Erik sneaked up behind him, and scared
him, which reminded Paul that was one of the very first times he saw Erik s true nature. When Paul
was in kindergarten, while waiting for the bus stop, he was made fun of, and explained that the eclipse
was the cause, but in the present he is questioning himself if that was really the cause. I think the
flashbacks were better to include since it heightened our understanding of the theme.
Another piece of evidence took place at Tangerine Middle. On Paul s first day, when his tour guide
asked about his vision, he hesitated, and replied I don t know . Edward Bloor again developed the
theme by showing Paul s struggle. Afterwards, Paul was starting to question himself, and that s when
the theme starts to develop even faster. I think that this question was a good way to start transitioning
the whole story.
Overall, I think Edward Bloor did a good job developing the Identity theme all over part two. Bloor
used figurative language to help the reader relate, and maybe understand to Paul s problem better.
Bloor putting in flashbacks was a good way to heighten our understanding. Lastly, using that question
to transition Paul s character was

I cannot remember a time in my life when I didn t love reading and writing. My favorite books during
my early childhood mostly consisted of Dr. Seuss books. I spent hours reading with my parents and on
my own, we read a book before bed every night. When I was in Kindergarten I wrote my first book,
about bunny rabbits. I spent hours making two copies of my picture book about what I believed
bunnies did. My older sister became my first critic when she told me that my book was stupid and
childish. I remember sobbing when a glass of water spilled on them and smudged the marker I had
used to create them. My mom managed to salvage the books and they re still in a box somewhere.
After Dr. Seuss and P.D Eastman; I graduated to Junie B. Jones , The Boxcar Children , and Magic
Tree House. I read nearly all of the books in those series, with my favorite being The Boxcar Children.
At the suggestion of my older sister, I read Suzanne Collins Gregor the Overlander series and loved it.
My sister and I fell in love with Violet Rains Almost Got Struck by Lightning and Everything on a
Waffle around the time I was going into middle school. I read those books about fifteen times each
and can still describe Violet Rains Almost Got Struck by Lightning perfectly. Around the same time, I
read, Out of my Mind by Sharon M. Draper and was completely blown away. That book changed my
perspective on people with special needs and I m now extremely active with the special

Emergency Medical Services ( Emergency Care )
As you may know, it does not matter where you are in the United States of America, you have the
opportunity to call 911 and receive emergency medical care. Depending on where you are when you
make that call may have an effect on how long it takes for someone to get to you. So, what defines the
word emergency? Is it a life threading situation, or just an everyday illness? Community Paramedicine
has many benefits, from helping cut down on people being re admitted to the hospital, to helping
people not misuse the emergency 911 system even if they do not realize they are doing so. Some
people may not realize that different emergency medical services run anywhere from one thousand
calls a year to one million calls a year. Community Paramedicine can help the so called frequent flyers
to where they do not call as much and they are more independent thus freeing up time, money, and
resources. For paramedics to respond to those life threating emergencies.
Emergency medical services has 4 levels of certification. Emergency medical responder, emergency
medical technician, advanced emergency medical technician, and paramedic. Progressing at each level
you gain more skills, responsibility, and knowledge, but all of which are within emergency and urgent
care. Some people get tired and burned out faster than others. Putting Community Paramedicine into
the mix adds another level as well as provides opportunity for paramedics that have twenty plus years
under their belt to slow down and

Sandy Hook Shooting Thesis
On a tragic December day many families saw their children for the last time. They would soon find
out that their children s school had been the site of a school shooting. Adam Lanza killed many
innocent lives and society could possibly benefit from these harsh actions. What would you do if you
never saw your family again? All the families of the victims are still mourning after almost 2 years.
Although the Sandy Hook shooting was a tragic day in history, society can benefit from this.
Sandy Hook was a chaotic town on December 14, 2012 where gunman, Adam Lanza, shot and killed
twenty children and six staff members. Many family members of the victims are still mourning the
loss of their children and loved ones. Over 500 lives were affected after this tragedy (Gay). The author
gives an interview of the superintendent of the school in which he shows what he did after he heard
the news of the shooting. I was in the district office and my secretary told me the bus company

My thesis relates to this because since they had a plan after this they could get back and rolling with
the no academic interruption. The school had many volunteers who helped out to rebuild the
community with help from the Red Cross. Without these people helping out and giving food to the
victims families, the city would have been in chaos with the families being very upset ( Six Months ).
Although people may be mad at the superintendent, it s not his fault and he wants to help the families
and help everyone rebound from this tragic event (Gay). Many parents were furious at the
superintendent for not saving their children but he s in as much pain as they are. Although Sandy
Hook shooting was a tragic day in history, society benefitted by better

Lingua Franca Essay
Lingua franca is defined as a language that is adopted as a common language between speakers whose
native languages are different ( lingua franca . 2016. Oxford Dictionaries.com.
https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/lingua_franca). In her book The Phonology of English as
an International Language (2000), Jenkins stated that the most universally used lingua franca is
English, and there are more non native English speakers compared to native English speakers. The
English language has been on the rise internationally ever since the British colonization which
strategically placed native English speakers all over the globe. However, there are talks that in a few

Some say that Mandarin is the future lingua franca as being the most populous nation, China, has
always been a force to be reckoned. However, although there are a higher amount of native Mandarin
speakers compared to native English speakers, there are 800 million people who speak English as their
second language compared to 500 million that speaks Mandarin as their second language (Mercer,
2015). In fact, for the majority users worldwide English is not their first language and a vast
proportion of verbal exchange in English does not involve any native speakers of the language at all.
(Seidlhofer, 2008) This is because English is chosen as the language of choice when communicating
with the world while Mandarin is only used to communicate around South East Asia. There might be
languages that will take over the English language as the dominant lingua franca in the distant future
but as of this moment, especially 10 years from now, English is still defending its

Bmw, A Brand Image Of Luxury And Performance
BRAND INVENTORY
According to Interbrand, BMW is the 11th best global brand of 2015, with a brand value estimated at
$37,212 million. Its success can be credit to the high quality of products and service, innovative
engineering technology, and a well constructed marketing strategy that built a brand image of luxury
and performance.
Brand Elements
BMW, abbreviation of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (Bavarian Motor Works, in English), is a
simple but distinctive brand name. The company s name is meaningful and reinforces an important
attribute of its products: the high quality engine. The shortened form makes the brand name easier to
recall.
The brand logo, known as Roundel, combines a symbol with the company s name. The blue and white
represent the colors of Bavarian flag. The round shape and arrangement of the letters were inspired by
the Rapp logo, the aircraft engine manufacturer that preceded BMW. Thus, the distinctive logo
symbolizes the heritage behind the brand. It has been updated along the years (1917, 1933, 1953,
1979, and 2000) and the most recent adaption brought a modern aspect to the logo.
BMW has a memorable and recognizable slogan in the United States: The Ultimate Driving Machine ,
which captures the features of luxury and performance in only one product. The 40 years old
trademarked slogan is simple, descriptive and represents its positioning. The worldwide BMW slogan
Sheer Driving Pleasure indicates the good experience consumers have when are driving

The Deep Horizon Oil Spill Was The Largest Environmental
The Deep Horizon oil spill was the largest environmental disaster the U.S. has ever faced. On April
20th, 2010, the Deep Horizon oil rig had exploded releasing over 134 million gallons of crude oil and
over four million pounds of gas into the Gulf of Mexico waters. The oil rig was owned and operated
by off shore oil drilling company called Tans ocean and subleased by a common oil company called
BP. The well was located on the sea floor which is 4,993 feet below the surface and it extended over
18,000 feet within the rocks. The explosion was caused by surges of natural gas that had blasted
through a concrete core within the Caspian Sea in September 2008. Even though this explosion was
two years before the Deep Horizon rig explosion, it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within a book entitled, Conserving The Environment, it is stated that; Accidents involving oil tankers
and offshore drilling platforms destroy thousands of fish, birds, and marine mammals. (Woodward,
22) As a consequence, not only are just the fish affected due to the oil and gases but sea birds and
mammals are as well. The reason why the oil and gas is affecting the animals so badly is due to the
chemical dispersants within them which are known as Corexit 9500 and Corexit 9527. These were
applied to the oil at the surface to aid break up oil slicks as well as at the wellhead itself.. Stated within
an article entitled, Gulf Wildlife In the Aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon Disaster Five Years and
Counting, there are indications that the dispersants can remain in the environment for years. So the
ecosystems will be harmed for not a short period of time but for years and years to come. When it is
broken down into subtopics, one will see how fish were affected, birds then mammals and then
ultimately how all of them put together as one were affected. A major fish that was affected due to the
Great Horizon oil spill would be the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna. The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna is one of the
largest fish in the Gulf of Mexico, due to it weighing at 550 pounds and being 6.5 feet long. A
laboratory study founded that the chemical in the Deepwater Horizon oil can

Identifying Strategies to Improve African American College...
Minorities are a growing segment of the population. However, this group continues to be
underrepresented in the area of post secondary education. Obtaining an advanced degree remains a
likely predictor of future career success. The problem facing the minority student is that barriers
persist which continue to hinder enrollment, retention, and graduation rates in institutions of higher
education. These barriers must be identified and examined and solutions offered if college completion
rates are to be increased for this population. While overall college enrollment and graduation rates
have risen for all minority groups, there continues to be concerns for this segment of the population,
particularly for African American students. Even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The U.S. Department of Education s Digest of Education Statistics (2010) compiles data on
educational trends and statistics in the United States. According to the digest, in 2009 African
Americans earned about 10 percent of all bachelor degrees awarded. Furthermore, about 20 percent of
African Americans currently hold a college degree. When compared to the same rates for the white
non hispanic population, African Americans are largely lagging behind. The challenges that African
Americans are facing must be met by post secondary institutions if this group is going to continue on
the path of economic and career prosperity. This need is discussed in the report Minorities in Higher
Education: Although greater access to higher education for students of color is an absolute imperative,
it is only part of the equation. Ensuring their academic success and readiness to thrive in an
interconnected world remains the ultimate goal. In a global economy, providing greater access to post
secondary education to individuals from all racial and ethnic backgrounds remains one of the most
important challenges facing our nation. Demographic changes have increased the proportions of
people of color in the United States, and our academic population (Ryu, 2009, p. i). The relationship
between ethnicity and retention in post secondary education has been widely discussed in the
literature. The

  • 2. End Of Semester Reflection. This Semester Has Been A Tough End of Semester Reflection This semester has been a tough one but I feel like I have learned a lot about pharmacy over these past few months. I have had a lot of courses so far and in each one, I have been able to make connections to the practice of pharmacy. In this essay, I will reflect on some of things I learned in my courses and how they relate to my future career as a pharmacist. I will also identify areas where certain topics intersect in different courses. In my pharmaceutics course, I learned a lot about drug dosage forms. One example is when I was taught about the different kinds of inhalers and what distinguishes them from each other. I also learned about how these inhalers deliver the drug into the target organ and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Insulin is a hormone that allows the body to store glucose. Diabetes is a disease state that results from the body not able to use insulin or the body cannot produce enough insulin. Since there is lack of insulin in a diabetic, glucose is not able to be stored. This means that glucose remains in the body and draws water out of cells causing dehydration. Additionally, the kidneys cannot reabsorb excess glucose and it spills into urine causing an osmotic effect. The above problems mentioned lead to excessive thirst and excessive urination. In a diabetic, glucose is not able to be used as a fuel source so fatty acids and proteins are used instead. This leads to weight loss, hunger, and a loss of energy. Biochemistry did a great job at teaching us very relevant material about pharmacy. As pharmacists, we dispense a lot of vitamins so it is important to know why patients are taking them. It is also important to be able to educate them if they have any questions. This goes for diabetic patients as well. Knowing how the disease works and being able to explain it to patients is something that we have to know as pharmacists. We must be able to answer a patient s questions about their diabetes and symptoms if they have any. In our ABLE lab course, we took a lot of things we learned in some of our courses and performed hands on activities using what we learned. For example, when we learned about suppositories in pharmaceutics, we compounded them in a lab activity. In fact, we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Death In Judaism Not all regions where Jews live celebrate life and death in the same way. This is because Jews had to assimilate to local cultures after they began to disperse to various parts of the world. This caused traditions to be pushed aside all together or to be blended with local cultures (Parkes, page 99). However, there are many core values that never faded and area consistently practiced in most parts of the world. Death in Judaism is an important part of life. As described in Death and Bereavement Across Cultures, Two of the most important commandments in Jewish tradition are to honor the dead and comfort the mourner. (98) Respect for the dead is known as, kavod ha met and the comfort given to the living is known as, nihum avelim (Rich). When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Olam ha ba or the world to come is the belief that the soul returns to God to wait to be reborn with the coming of the Messiah. Death allows for Jewish people to value life and their short time spent on earth (Parkes, 101). It is believed that beyond death, life does not include earthly pleasures such as eating and drinking. After death life consists of being, in the glory of the Divine Presence. There is no hell after death as a destination. Rather, happiness to those who lived a righteous life and suffering to those who sinned and led others to sin. There is more of a reward versus punishment system instead of destinations. The punishment given to those in life after death is not set in stone, it is described in the Talmud as, vague and contradictory (Darmesteter, page 51 52). In many branches Christianity it is believed one s soul goes to purgatory when they die and the decision is made weather your soul will spend eternity in heaven or hell. Jewish tradition does not believe that souls end up in one of the two destinations rather, all souls end up in the same place, it is just the journey that is different for different individuals. When your body dies your soul leaves it and begins its journey to return to God, this journey is considered a purification process so your soul is pure in the world to come. The purification process for those who lived a fulfilling and righteous life may only take a day or so while those who lived a life full of sin take a longer time on their journey to purification, taking up to a year. After this purification process is complete Jewish tradition states that the soul is then waiting for the coming of the Messiah when the soul will return to the physical body for final judgment (Parkes, ... • 4. The Philippine Insurrection The Philippine Insurrection of 1899 1902 was a little different than most insurgencies. Using Mao s 3 phases of an insurgency, which I will break down below. The native demand for liberation from Spain had been building since the 1880s. In 1892 a poor warehouseman by the name of Andres Bonifacio organized a group called the Katiunan, hoping to drive the Spaniard s out of the Philippines. As in other insurgencies, we are seeing groups coming together for the same objective, but not all insurgent groups get along. In 1896 after a reign of terror against the islanders, Emilio Aguinaldo, a rival group leader, took over leadership by having Bonifacio executed. The insurgency was forced into the hills, but the fighting continued. The people wanted Spain out and supported an independent Philippines. In 1897 Spain paid Aguinaldo off to stop the fighting and sent him to Hong Kong. This put the insurgency back into survival mode and brought a temporary peace. Aguinaldo made a pact with the United States which was at war with Spain at the time. With the assistance of Commodore Dewey they were able to have a decisive victory over the Spanish in Manila. June 12th then became Philippine Independence Day in 1898. The Americans seemed reluctant to leave and in December Spain formally ceded the Philippines to the United States in the Paris Peace Treaty. In January 1899 Aguinaldo staged an inauguration of the First Philippine Republic. This was an uneasy peace, because what was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Breathing and getting into correct positioning were areas of the Pilates exercise that I definitely needed improvement on. Portions of this exercise were difficult for this slightly overweight man to do. I had a hard time with lifting, stretching, and moving my legs while lying on my back. I could see potential in this exercise for improving the back pain of individuals. I stretched my back and stomach muscles often and felt a slight improvement of the back pain I usually feel from time to time. The instructor in this video explained the exercise ... How Does Shaun Tan Use Visual Techniques In The Rabbits The rabbits, an illustrative book by John Marsden and Shaun Tan, is a visually intriguing piece that evokes empathy toward the Indigenous Australians; using a wide variety of visual literary techniques to create a captivating, historical story. The story follows a historical look at the European colonisation of Australia and it s devastating aftermath on the indigenous people and the land itself. Shaun Tan has really brought the book to life with his use of visually interesting aspects such as anthropomorphic characters, brilliant use of colour and the overall layout of the images. The dark, almost black, shadows of the rabbits would symbolise their take over of the land and how it is being changed and harmed by the rabbit s arrival. There is also the difference in the sky colouring behind the boat and in front of it; that may signify the rabbit s darker past, and the lighter more cheerful presents of the numbat s ... • 7. Chaucer And The Pardoner s Tale The Life of Chaucer and the Pardoners Tale Geoffrey Chaucer, the father of English poetry, was born in England in 1342. He was born to a middle class family. He eventually started to work in the royal household, where he was respected and known. His job was to run errands for the household, but he was exposed to higher living and became closer to those kinds of people. The story follows the adventures of a larger than life character named Beowulf. This character is famous for slaying monstrous beasts, having incredible strength, and qualities considered optimal in the world of the Germanic tribes. Beowulf relates to Herricks poem because like many of the warriors in his day, they held Epicurean beliefs. The Germanic people believed that death is final and that there is no afterlife. Their warriors were only interested in finding treasures of their enemies and honor from their king. They fought to earn riches and armor and any other thing that they desired. Beowulf was one of these men as well. When he killed the beast Grendel, he took his arm and hung it from the rafters for everybody to see. When he went to kill the Dragon, he knew that he would not be coming back from the battle alive. He said that if he died, he wanted a massive tower built to him to honor him. In the battle with the dragon, he is mortally wounded. As he is dying, he tells his friend Wiglaf to bring over the dragons treasure so he can see it before he dies. This proves perfectly that Beowulf and his fellow warriors are concerned with earthly things (riches) and enjoy earthly things. It has become nearly impossible to make it in the music industry, and those who do often will not succeed for very long. Yet, it is still an illusive field and one that society depends on for entertainment. By creating documentaries about musicians, viewers get a behind the scenes look at what being a musician truly entails, whether it is good or bad. For Ken Vandermark, his career as a musician is a struggle, as documented by Daniel Kraus s Musician, because of his niche genre for contemporary society. Madonna, on the other hand, has created a career as a pop icon, as documented by Alek Keshishian s Madonna: Truth or Dare, which may be financially successful, but is not always rewarding. Both Kraus and Keshishian employ similar tactics for their respective documentaries; however, through the use of different camera angles, relations to the subject, and display of live music, they are able to provide unique insight into the artists they are following. Throughout Musician, Kraus uses multiple camera angles in order to develop the narrative of the documentary. His two most frequently used, extreme close ups and wide angle, are both frequently found throughout the film to create poignant moments in the film. • 20. Of Mice And Men Movie And Book Comparison Essay Multitudes of well known films are derived from novels; however, despite the majority of the accurate depictions, these adaptations contain several varying scenes as compared to the book. For example, John Steinbeck s novella Of Mice and Men and the 1992 movie version share similar elements, yet the movie strays from the original source material. While the portrayal of the characters are accurate, certain important segments are added or deleted. Therefore, despite the correspondence of the 1992 Of Mice and Men movie to the novella, they re not exact representations of one another. While movie adaptations often have inaccurate portrayals of the novel s characters, the Of Mice and Men movie is one of the exceptions. • 21. Social Darwinism And The Progressive Era 2. Already in the late 19th century, the American Federation of Labor had begun to represent a growing segment of the American population discontented with the status quo of corporate exploitation. At the onset of the 20th century however this message began to take particular weight, as evidenced by the tripling of the AFL s membership and the rise of the Industrial Workers of the World. Labor unions, the Socialist Party and progressives as a whole took issue with the doctrine of Social Darwinism and moved forward as a somewhat united front with the goal of bringing meaningful change to American society. As America made the transition into an industrial power in the latter half of the 19th century, Social Darwinism became a prevalent method of rationalizing massive inequality and widespread poverty. This doctrine of leaving the poorest in the nation to uplift themselves from abject hardship without being provided any means to do so was exemplified as the American population became increasingly concentrated in cities. Poor families would often go without electricity or indoor toilets. Staggering inequality continued into the Progressive era. It was estimated that J.P. Morgan s financial firm controlled 40 percent of all financial and industrial capital in the nation. The largest conclaves of organized labor, the Industrial Workers of the World and the American Federation of Labor, sought to tackle the stifling economic and political climate through sharply contrasting ... Speech On Social Expectations Often in their lives, individuals are plagued by unrealistic societal expectations that threaten individual s personal moralities which lead them to act in certain ways that they would later regret. A person s desire to be a part of a community, one in which they can feel accepted by social standards, is what can ultimately bring them to their morality s demise. Despite having social expectations bring down one s honour due to certain situations, it is important to remember that at times, it is not the outside world that inherently plagues individuals, rather, it can be the individuals themselves. Social expectations that seep into our own egos have the power to make one s own expectations into something that can set individuals up for failure. However, as tragic as certain mistakes can be, it is important to remember that the recovery from one s downfall is what matters the most. In order to effectively restore honour and certainty in oneself, one must learn to take a proactive approach to their adversities stemming from unrealistic social standards that brought them to their downfall. As human beings require feelings of accomplishment, honour, and certainty in order to most effectively function and achieve other feats in their lives, a proactive approach to the adversities that threaten their honour and certainty is vital. Nina Simone, the songwriter and performer, certainly wants you to think this song is innocuous. She goes as far as to describe this song as a show tune in the beginning of the lyrics. I believe, at Carnegie Hall back in 1964, she focused on this aspect of the song to let the white audience s guard down just long enough to surprise them with a powerful message. Sigmund Freud, FETISHISM (1927) According to Freud, a person s fetish, whether it may be a material object, act or some sort of obsessive compulsive conduct, then that person is substituting the connection to the penis that they had emotionally lost at childhood and finding support in that object or action. The word FETISH in fact originated from Portugal, the word feitiço which means spell . This suggests a representation of power or power over something, in this case power over an individual and one s extreme attachment to an object, body part or specific situation. • 42. Essay on The Introduction of Prohibition The Introduction of Prohibition Prohibition was introduced in 1920 as part of an amendment to the Constitution of the USA. It was introduced for a variety of different reasons including a wartime concern for preserving grain for food rather than for brewing and distilling. There were also feelings against the German Americans, who were responsible for brewing and distilling, at a time when America was at war against Germany which also let the Anti Saloon league influence the general public before the main objectors, the men, returned home. Even though there are many reasons for the introduction of prohibition there was only one main consequence. It created the greatest criminal boom in American ... Nevertheless, this would not stop the large population of German Americans buying the alcohol along with many other Americans who had come to America from other countries. An additional consideration that led people in the belief that prohibition would succeed was the cost of alcohol so people may have used the law as an opportunity to give up alcohol without seeming odd to others. Moreover, this problem would not prevent wealthy Americans from trying to purchase alcohol because they had the money to do it without sending their family into the downwards spiral of poverty. Also, to begin with the level of enforcement for the law was so high that even if people did not support the law, the prohibition commissioners could have worked hard to dispose of alcohol whilst gathering support. However, this hard work soon ended when the commissioners, along with the police, politicians, magistrates, party officials and clerks, began to accept bribes from gangsters and the owners of speakeasies to ignore the activities that were taking place around them. • 43. Edward Bloor Identity Analysis One of the major themes of the novel is Identity. I claim that Paul is struggling with how he is, and his eyesight, which is his identity overall. Edward Bloor has developed the theme all over the story, and it s seen in his characters, flashbacks, etc. This theme plays an important role overall in Paul s quest in trying to grasp strength, and courage. The following are evidence, and commentary of how the theme has been developed over the two parts. We first get to see the first evidence of the theme in the first few pages. Edward Bloor used allegory, and symbolism to represent Paul s past, and for Paul he refers it as a zombie since he didn t quite know about it yet. Paul refers his past as a zombie since he can t put it to a rest nor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though the flashbacks aren t in order, we got to see how Paul was in the past, and his commentary in the present. When Paul was testing out his peripheral vision, Erik sneaked up behind him, and scared him, which reminded Paul that was one of the very first times he saw Erik s true nature. When Paul was in kindergarten, while waiting for the bus stop, he was made fun of, and explained that the eclipse was the cause, but in the present he is questioning himself if that was really the cause. I think the flashbacks were better to include since it heightened our understanding of the theme. Another piece of evidence took place at Tangerine Middle. On Paul s first day, when his tour guide asked about his vision, he hesitated, and replied I don t know . Edward Bloor again developed the theme by showing Paul s struggle. Afterwards, Paul was starting to question himself, and that s when the theme starts to develop even faster. I think that this question was a good way to start transitioning the whole story. Overall, I think Edward Bloor did a good job developing the Identity theme all over part two. Bloor used figurative language to help the reader relate, and maybe understand to Paul s problem better. Bloor putting in flashbacks was a good way to heighten our understanding. Lastly, using that question to transition Paul s character was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. My Favorite Books I cannot remember a time in my life when I didn t love reading and writing. My favorite books during my early childhood mostly consisted of Dr. Seuss books. I spent hours reading with my parents and on my own, we read a book before bed every night. When I was in Kindergarten I wrote my first book, about bunny rabbits. I spent hours making two copies of my picture book about what I believed bunnies did. My older sister became my first critic when she told me that my book was stupid and childish. I remember sobbing when a glass of water spilled on them and smudged the marker I had used to create them. My mom managed to salvage the books and they re still in a box somewhere. After Dr. Seuss and P.D Eastman; I graduated to Junie B. Jones , The Boxcar Children , and Magic Tree House. I read nearly all of the books in those series, with my favorite being The Boxcar Children. At the suggestion of my older sister, I read Suzanne Collins Gregor the Overlander series and loved it. My sister and I fell in love with Violet Rains Almost Got Struck by Lightning and Everything on a Waffle around the time I was going into middle school. I read those books about fifteen times each and can still describe Violet Rains Almost Got Struck by Lightning perfectly. Around the same time, I read, Out of my Mind by Sharon M. Draper and was completely blown away. That book changed my perspective on people with special needs and I m now extremely active with the special ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In fact, for the majority users worldwide English is not their first language and a vast proportion of verbal exchange in English does not involve any native speakers of the language at all. (Seidlhofer, 2008) This is because English is chosen as the language of choice when communicating with the world while Mandarin is only used to communicate around South East Asia. On April 20th, 2010, the Deep Horizon oil rig had exploded releasing over 134 million gallons of crude oil and over four million pounds of gas into the Gulf of Mexico waters. The oil rig was owned and operated by off shore oil drilling company called Tans ocean and subleased by a common oil company called BP. The reason why the oil and gas is affecting the animals so badly is due to the chemical dispersants within them which are known as Corexit 9500 and Corexit 9527. These were applied to the oil at the surface to aid break up oil slicks as well as at the wellhead itself.. However, this group continues to be underrepresented in the area of post secondary education. Obtaining an advanced degree remains a likely predictor of future career success. The problem facing the minority student is that barriers persist which continue to hinder enrollment, retention, and graduation rates in institutions of higher education. These barriers must be identified and examined and solutions offered if college completion rates are to be increased for this population. While overall college enrollment and graduation rates have risen for all minority groups, there continues to be concerns for this segment of the population, particularly for African American students. According to the digest, in 2009 African Americans earned about 10 percent of all bachelor degrees awarded. Furthermore, about 20 percent of African Americans currently hold a college degree. When compared to the same rates for the white non hispanic population, African Americans are largely lagging behind. The challenges that African Americans are facing must be met by post secondary institutions if this group is going to continue on the path of economic and career prosperity. This need is discussed in the report Minorities in Higher Education: Although greater access to higher education for students of color is an absolute imperative, it is only part of the equation. Ensuring their academic success and readiness to thrive in an interconnected world remains the ultimate goal. In a global economy, providing greater access to post secondary education to individuals from all racial and ethnic backgrounds remains one of the most important challenges facing our nation.
