The Unforgetting By Lan Samantha Chang Summary
ABOUT LAN SAMANTHA CHANG
Lan Samantha Chang s fiction has appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, Story, and The Best American
Short Stories. A graduate of Yale University and the University of Iowa, she divides her time between
Northern California and Princeton, New Jersey. AN INTERVIEW WITH LAN SAMANTHA
CHANG
Many of the families in Hunger have attempted to sever themselves from the past in order to build a
future. Was this how your parents coped with starting over in America? What parts of Chinese culture
did they celebrate?
My parents disconnection from China was never as deliberate or extreme as Ming and Sansan s
disconnection in The Unforgetting. My mother and father spoke Chinese and ate Chinese food; they

Were the same forces present in your own family? How were these conflicts resolved?
Well, we re a passionate family (my mother says it s my father s blood) and I remember some serious
household arguments going on when I was a child. Most of the fights took place between my father
and my two older sisters. My sisters were fighting for permission to do things that typical American
teenagers do: to join the soccer team, sleep over at friends houses, go on dates. My sisters didn t get
everything they wanted. For example, my parents decided they would be allowed to go to movies with
boys, but only matinees. My parents believed that going to movies at night might encourage bad
behavior. I could never understand this; aren t movie theaters as dark in the afternoon as they are at
night?
Anyway, I can now also see that the fights were really about my sisters desires to be individuals, to act
in the world and be responsible for themselves. My parents had not grown up with role models for
such independent young women. The conflict was inevitable and necessary; it was part of our family s
gradual movement into American culture.
Will you discuss how and why you decided to become a writer?
I have wanted to be a writer since before I could read. As a child, I copied picture books out onto
sheets of paper, with the illustrations and all of the letters, before I could even put

Similarities Between Gegosh And The Epic Of Gilgamesh
There are many shared experiences that make the journeys of Gilgamesh and Orestes similar. Orestes
and Gilgamesh reform their characters by going through a series of events; at each event, their
character is modified or strengthened in a analogous way by their communities or peers. Although
they both begin content with their situations, they become aware that something needs to change in
order for there to be peace within their societies. Following this realization, various influences force
the leading characters to go through with their personal trials that they have been contemplating, in
turn forcing them to have the strength and courage that they had not possessed prior to this point. In
order to help Gilgamesh and Orestes learn the virtue and importance in comradery and community,
each is paired with a companion to aid them in their trials. At the conclusion of the stories, the
characters fully comprehend that the wellbeing of the community is more important than their own
person gains. Both title characters from The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Oresteia undergo parallel
journeys, with the most pivotal similarity being the effect that the community has on the shaping
events that Gilgamesh and Orestes undergo.
In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh begins as an inconsiderate ruler who does not respect his people
or the community. It becomes clear from early on in the novel that Gilgamesh has caused an upset in
society, and for the population to function smoothly he has to change his ways. The text reads, Neither
the father s son nor the wife of the noble is safe in Uruk; neither the mother s daughter nor the warrior
s bride is safe (Gilgamesh, I:i). This excerpt shows how the subjects under Gilgamesh s rule were
scared of him. Not a soul in the town was safe because of the king, and this caused a great upset to the
ways of society. Gilgamesh did not see the wrong in his doings and did not take into account the
consideration the feelings of his pupils. In order for the community to obtain peace, their ruler will
have to learn that he is the change that needs to occur.
Although he had been banished for quite some time, Orestes returns to mourn his father and discovers
the great injustice that had been

Nursing Philosophy And The Metaparadigm
According to Allison Marchuk, nursing philosophy is a statement of fundamental and universal
assumptions, beliefs, and principles about nature of knowledge and truth and the nature of the entities
represented in the metaparadigm (Marchuk, 2014). Nursing philosophy is the base of practice for it
ensures the application of knowledge, skills concepts, models and theories in the provision of care.
The practice of nursing is based on concepts of patient, nurse, health, and environment. My
professional nursing philosophy focuses on provision of human care/ family centered patient care
geared towards improvement and maintenance of health. Per Hamric, advanced practice nursing is a
patient focused care that deals with application of an expanded range of competencies that will have

Cyp 3.1 Language Analysis
Throughout a child s early stages of life, language is used primarily for communicating with parents in
order to get what they need. From as early as birth babies communicate through crying in order to tell
parents what they want. Parents soon learn to distinguish between the hungry cry, the wet/dirty cry
and the tired cry. According to Halliday, 1975, children begin to learn their first language from
between six eighteen months old. He believes children are learning a system of meanings . He looks at
language from a functional point of view and suggests there are seven functions that language serves
for young children. The first four of these functions ensure that social, emotional and physical needs
are catered to, they are called, Instrumental, Regulatory, Interactional and Personal. Instrumental
refers to a child using language to ensure they get what they need or want. The Regulatory function
tells others what to do in order to control their behaviour. The Interactional function relates to the use
of language in order to interact with the people around the child particularly those seen as important
such as parents and siblings or close friends. The personal function relates to how the child uses
language to explain feelings, and their own identity. The other three functions are used as children
become older and want to know more about the world, tell stories and pass on information. ... Show

Land that is coming out of CRP works great to be put right into raising organic crops, because you
donít have to wait for three years to change to organic. If you donít have land that is coming out of
CRP or something like it, then you will have to go through a three year transition period. There are
sometimes markets for these crops, but otherwise they have to be sold like regular crops. Iowa State
University says that, ìIn Iowa, the Natural Resource Conservation Services offers organic farmers
$50/acre during their transition to organic farming.î (May 2002)
The biggest problem people have with organic farming is weed control. You canít use chemicals, so it
has do be done mechanically. Farmers use different tactics to try and control weeds, like delaying
planting until the ground is warmer and using the crop rotations helps out tremendously. One tool that
farmers can use is a flamer to get rid of weeds. According to Bowman, ìFlames from LP gas burners
kill plants by rupturing cell walls, not burning plant tissue. Flaming is most effective on broadleaf
weeds as small seedlings.î (1997)
A rotary hoe is a must when you are organic farming. You need to rotary hoe corn and beans two to
three times. After the hoeing two cultivations are usually needed with a cultivator. Many times the

Comparing Beggar Woman by William King and To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell Beggar
Woman (William King) and To His Coy Mistress (Andrew Marvell) are two poems written in the 17th
century when society was very different to how it is today: women had no status, rights, or
independence. All aspects of society were male dominated, they ruled, and so all laws and acts were in
the favour of males. The poems are great examples of how society was when they were written, they
also mirror the roles each gender played in the various aspect of life, the males active and controlling,
the women passive, and they had to be compliant. At the beginning of this poem, there is a description
of a gentleman out hunting, which is an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

he must not be seen to assist, or sympathise with the lower classes in anyway, even when not in

of supposed power. Conversation which then follows is suggestive of the woman s profession. Sitting

because she has neither the income nor the lifestyle to bring up the child in any kind of security. The
Beggar Woman tricks the man into taking the baby by making every excuse so as to force him to take
the baby, if he wants sex; however she does this not particularly skillfully but the man is under the

You walk into the living room and you hear the famous Disney music coming from the television that
your child is placed in front of. You start to wonder where did your favorite Disney movies came
from? How did they come about into the human world or how were they produced? What was Walt
Disney s childhood like when he was younger that made him want to animate and put together

more important question, who is taking over now that Walt Disney has passed? Who is keeping on the
traditions of Mickey and all of his famous characters? These are some questions that I set out to look

Disney: A Key to Childhood Hearts. On December 5th. 1901 in the town of Chicago, Illinois a baby

child Walt s father, Elias, was a very strict and religious man. His father would physically beat him
and his siblings if any sort of toys, drawings, or any type of entertainment was found around the
house. His wife, Flora, feared him too. When Walt was born his father was a construction worker and
his mother a stay at home mom to five Disney children. His father later then took up a farm in

How the Properties of Water are Related to Its Roles in Living Organisms and as a Living
Environment for Living Organisms
Over 70% of the world s surface is covered by water, 95% of which consists of salty oceans; water is
essential to all life forms. A molecule of water consists of two hydrogen atoms covalently bound to
one atom of oxygen which gives a formula of H2O. When water molecules are close together their
positive and negative regions are attracted to the oppositely charged regions of nearby molecules. The
force of attraction, shown in the diagram below as a dotted line, is called a hydrogen bond. Each water
molecule is hydrogen bonded to four others. It is these hydrogen bonds and the ... Show more content

This also means that, compared with air, water releases heat energy slowly when situations cause it to
cool. Water s high specific heat helps organisms to regulate their body temperatures more effectively.
Water vapour is a greenhouse gas, and both the capability to keep heat in and to transfer heat from the
tropics serves to buffer temperatures on Earth. For example, as one half of the Earth rotates away from
the sun the fall in temperature is much more gradual than it would have been if there was no water
vapour in the atmosphere.
As water expands when it freezes it allows ice to float on the surface which creates an insulating layer
on lakes and rivers. This prevents the entire body of water and all the organisms living in it from
freezing. The weak hydrogen bonding means that ice has a lot of empty space. When ice melts the
frozen geometry is removed, but not all the hydrogen bonds are broken. The molecules begin to pack
more closely together to fill some of the empty space. Thus, liquid water is denser than ice. Water has
its greatest density at 4°C and this is why the top of a lake freezes first. The cooler part freezes and the
more dense water at slightly higher temperature sinks to the bottom. This helps to protect fresh water
organisms which live in the bottom. The empty space also means that ice does not conduct heat very

Noise generated by electronic devices varies greatly, as it can be produced by several different effects.
Thermal noise is unavoidable at non zero temperature, while other types depend mostly on device type
or manufacturing quality and semiconductor defects, such as conductance fluctuations, including 1/f
noise. 16. Explain the difference between external and internal noise.
Internal Noise is that which a system generates on its own. For example in MicroProcessor,
Inductance of lines connecting different gates or coupling capacitance between different lines may
produce noise. In some systems, thermal excitation and deexcitation of Electrons may produce Noise.
In Most Cases, such Noise is unavoidable. For example, if we are amplifying a signal by normal
Amplifier, which has certain internal Noise, and if We make gain large to improve signal to Noise
ratio, Noise gain will also increase!!! External Noise on the other hand comes from some external
source. For example, in Microprocessor system, ripple voltage from power supply or voltage spikes
may produce noise. This noise can often be reduced easily and may even be suppressed.

The Apache Indians Long And Proud Culture Essay
The First Americans
As we know, the first people to inhabit the United States were not the Europeans, but instead the
Native Americans. Part of our great nation s history involves a history that is not always so great. Our
country has endured many wars, struggles, economic and agricultural hardship and a history that many
would call shameful. However, the United States has evolved over hundreds of years and has
transcended its very existence and influenced every corner of the globe, because of those past
hardships our country has grown into what has become the most diverse, opportunistic and free
country the world has ever known. In this essay, I will discuss the Apache Indians long and proud
culture in conjunction with their own personal struggles as a Native American tribe in North America.
Apache Indians are dated back to 850 A.D. when they traveled south from Alaska and Canada, they
continued their southern descent until they eventually settled throughout regions in the southwestern
parts of the United States. Their first original settlements included areas in northern Mexico, Texas,
New Mexico, Arizona and southern Colorado. Today the Apache live on reservations on some four
and a half million acres of land that are spread across Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Within
the Apache tribe there are ten subgroups, one of which is closely related to the Apache and share the
same dialect, but has recently become its own tribe known as the Navajo. The other nine groups

Foreign Language Learners Behavior On Captioned Videos
Gass, Sydorenko, Winke (2013) investigated foreign language learners behavior on captioned videos.
Their investigation aroused from various previous studies that showed positive evidence of the
effectiveness of captioned video in improving learners skill. However, many of prior studies did not
provide exact measurement on which part(s) learners paid attention to when they watched captioned
and non captioned video. The absence of precise measurement limited the finding of the previous
studies (Gass, Sydorenko, Winke 2013). Therefore, using eye tracking device, they wanted to observe
how often foreign language learners read captions on captioned videos. They also intended to
investigate whether specific foreign language and the familiarity of the video content play role in
learners attention to the captions.
Thirty three college level foreign language learners who are in their fourth semester were included in
this study. They are English speaker learners of Arabic (n = 7), Chinese (n = 7), Russian (n = 8), and
Spanish (n = 10) with no experience of studying abroad. Twenty two participants are female and the
rest are male. The writers were aware that their participants might had different level of second
language proficiency despite the similarity in the length of learning. The, however, did not mention
how these participants are assigned to the study. Neither did the writer explain whether the

Buddhism has a similar concept, dhamma (note even the linguistic similarity). Dhamma does not
imply specific biological or social obligations, but maintains a comparable philosophical construct.
The Buddhist definition of right conduct and personal obligation, dhamma is the path which must be
taken to escape the suffering of worldly life.
Other similarities between Hinduism and Buddhism are more apparent. Both religions maintain a
broad perspective of religious worship. Hinduism is polytheistic while Buddhism maintains no
structured belief in an independent, sentient god like entity (especially in human form). Either of these
concepts yields a malleable religion which can adjust and conform to local tradition and fluctuations
in intellectual and spiritual thought. Both religions believe in a system of reincarnation, and both
religions emphasize the community over the self. The major rift between the two religions seems to
stem from the role of social structure in the two religions. Hinduism s caste system perpetuates a
fatalism and apathy toward social rights and advancement while reinforcing the ruling establishment.
Buddhism concentrates on the individual s release from suffering, implying no overriding social
definition. The outstanding example of Hinduism s establishment tendencies is the caste system. The
caste system divides the Hindu people into four major classes, Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and
Shudra, and untouchables, or people outside of

Anglo Saxon Civilization
The people we know as the Anglo Saxons were indeed from Germany and Southern Scandinavia. The
Anglo Saxons, as well as other individuals, embarked for Britain. Bede names three of these tribes: the
Angles, Saxons and Jutes (qtd.in Mason). The numerous invaders were massive, and they surely did
affect the nature of British society, even to a certain length of exchanging their original language, but
not their culture. The Anglo Saxons cemetery with no products may have belonged to Britons living
adjacent to the Anglo Saxons, and the shortage of goods signified the various practices of the Britons
(Anglo Saxon).
The individuals of each of the various Anglo Saxon realm spoke different languages, which
progressed over a period of time and became noted as Old English (The Editors of Encyclopaedia
Britannica). Because of the Anglo Saxons, they have built the foundation for the later empires. The
Anglo Saxons portrayed a blend of Germanic people with Britain s previous individuals. The Bedes
people relocated from Germany to the islands of the Britons, to help protect a kingdom against
invaders. The Anglo Saxon will always be a part of Britain s history, mostly described as forming the
nation. Britain underwent countless adjustments, such their dialects and religion. The Anglo Saxon
spread across England, bringing their culture and religion along with them. The Anglo Saxons

Comparing Rear Window And Cornell Woolrich s It Had To Be...
Genres are not systems, they are a process of systematisation. (Neale 1980). Genres are both a method
of nomenclature, dividing literature according to its style, subject and context. Genre constantly re
imagines, challenges, and expands its boundaries to reflect zeitgeist of the society at the time and to
become a barometer of the social and cultural concerns of the audience. Likewise, crime fiction as a
genre has evolved from traditional conventions. Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window and Cornell
Woolrich s It had to be Murder, whilst obeying and selectively utilising a few original conventions,

In contrast, Lisa Fremont, Jefferies lover, whilst staying true to the convention of an intuitive, female
detective, also explores the role of female companions by acting as a physical extension for Jefferies.
She employs acts of sleuthing by bravely acquiring key evidence such as the wedding ring, while
disregarding her safety. The shot of Thorwald s violence against Lisa is captured with long shot
technique in the film Rear Window. This again reminds the audience that they are seeing through
Jefferies eyes and reinforces the need for a physical sidekick to assist the crippled immobile
protagonist. Hitchcock reflects on the late First Wave Feminism movement in the 1950s, by placing
women in more active and dominant roles when solving crimes, highlighting the growing roles of
women in society (Gender.cawater info.net, n.d.). Woolrich in his story, It Had to murder, replaces
both Lisa and Stella with a male character Sam. This delineating adherence to traditional gender roles,
disregarding the value of female intuition.. Whilst Rear Window employs the conventional

National Academy of the United States of America. Titled, Examining the Effects of Birth Order on
Personality three authors collectively come to this agreement that there are no lasting effects from
birth order in long term personality traits. The names of these authors are, Julia M. Roher, Boris
Eglaff, and Stefan C. Schmukle. They explore previous research on the subject from various
psychologists, and later decide to conduct their own research and draw conclusions thereafter.
I found the article to be very straightforward in its approach. The subject matter was presented clearly
within the opening sentences. Each point was elaborated thoroughly, and it was written in a way both
professionals, and average readers could comprehend the language. The terms were relatively
relatable, no advanced medical terminology was mentioned, and evidence was given for each
argument presented in their research. Statistics and table charts played a significant role in
demonstrating credibility of the findings.
There were three distinct points made in contrast to birth order affecting personality. Age, sibship size,
and family design. Age was a contributing factor in terms of long standing

Betlie s Multiple Times Corrie Ten Boom
This attitude takes center stage at various points in the novel, especially during the sisters stays at the
prison and concentration camps. Multiple times Corrie hears Betsie speak of how sorry she felt for the
German soldiers and how she wishes she could help them see the err of their ways. Betsie s
compassion towards her captors, assaulters, and enemies profoundly illustrates her love for the human
race and the desire she has that all know Christ. While in the Vught concentration camp, Betsie states,
Corrie, if people can be taught to hate, they can be taught to love! We must find a way, no matter how
long it takes... . Betsie sees the potential for goodness in everyone she meets despite their actions.
Overall, these three themes contribute to the central message of the novel. No matter how desperate a
situation or the severity of tribulation, the love of God is greater still and His love provides hope in
times of need. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a whole, the novel contains a few weaknesses. The first weakness arises from the time difference
between the events and the writing of the novel. Corrie ten Boom wrote THE HIDING PLACE twenty
years after the fact. It is extremely likely that the events depicted in the novel are shades of what
actually occurred. Memories fade and time distorts the reality of the past and because of this, I feel
that the book would have been more factually accurate had Corrie ten Boom written it much sooner.
Another weakness in the book derives itself from ten Boom s heavy reliance on her Christian faith. As
I read the book, I felt that some of the circumstances were glossed over and events were chocked up to
being merely miracles. However, I do agree with Corrie ten Boom s major premise throughout the
novel that religion can play a crucial role during tough

Rich People Just Care Less By Daniel Goleman
Imagine having a 200% percent in a class with a few weeks left. Would you continue to put in the
effort or stop because you know you are guaranteed the A+? Most humans would stop because the
effort was no longer needed. Rich and powerful people have this mindset when it comes to empathy
and compassion to others. They don t see the need to connect to the feelings of others because it seems
irrelevant to their life. Agreeing with the article Rich people just care less by Daniel Goleman, I too
believe that high salaried and statused people do not have as good interpersonal relationships as low
class workers because they lack interest in understanding others situations. Social interactions are vital
in the world we live in today, yet, more so for the poor because While the wealthy can hire help, those
with few material assets are more likely to value their social assets: like a neighbor who will keep an

Thomas F. Pettigrew, a sociologist, claims, per Goleman , that even in areas where ethnic groups were
in conflict and viewed one another through lenses of negative stereotypes, individuals who had close
friends within the other group exhibited little or no such prejudice (Goleman 2). Since rich people
typically lack meaningful interaction with lower classes or people of different ethnicities, they fail to
see that they are often good people that don t deserve to be stereotyped. Instead, they look at the
differences between them causing the empathy gap. Clearly rich people have benefits in life but
money can t buy many things. No matter how much money someone makes, empathy is not buyable.

English Language Learners Paper
Introduction
This paper will describe my learning experiences working with English Language Learners (ELL)
who were in the first grade; the students age ranges were from 6 to 8 years old. The students attended
an elementary school that provided a curriculum specifically to fit their learning needs; the school
develops lessons from an English only model. Restrepo Gray (2007) suggested that English only
models allow ELL students to learn lessons only in English with teacher s aids or paraprofessionals
offering occasional support to them in their native language. During my learning experience, I will
note that the classroom teacher selected various materials to demonstrate the learning activities to
students. I will create lesson plans visible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I will discuss the day s learning objectives and with the students. According to Seifert (2017), when
teachers have aims in mind, they are able to write more detailed lesson plans with variations to the
lesson. I will also discuss with students the next learning experience, which will be Science. The
activity will include the life cycle of flying bats. I will initially use a flip chart to write down words the
students sang during their brain break. I will write down bat, dip, pad, and tub. Then, I will ask
students to look at my mouth as I sound out each word. After that, students will be asked to raise their
hands and come to the flip chart to point out the word once I call them. I will make anecdotal notes of
students who participated or not; students who will not participate I will make observation if the
students failed to participate because of lack of understanding or disengaged. Further, I will prompt
and reassure to make model sounds to pronounce the words. I will orally model sounds of the words
with deep expression on the beginning and ending sounds. Teachers who work with ELL students
must receive in depth training in attempt to understand the significance of modeling tasks for students

Most patients are told to just manage their symptoms while waiting for the virus to pass. If the patient

A Report On The Outbreak Of Salmonella
Salmonella is a gram negative bacterium present in contaminated food or water. Typhoid fever is a
systemic infection caused by the serotype Salmonella typhi and can be fatal without proper
intervention. Instances of resistant typhoid are high in less developed countries. Resistance occurs
when genetic mutations prevent antibiotic mechanisms of action, making current antibiotics less
effective. The purpose of this drug screen was to target oncological drugs and diversity library
compounds to identify novel antibiotic substances. To perform the initial drug screen, we exposed
Salmonella typhimurium to various compounds and chemotherapeutic drugs. The positive and
negative controls were ampicillin and Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), respectively. We used
spectrophotometry to measure the growth of salmonella in the plate. Hits were identified as
compounds with an absorbance below 2 standard deviations of the mean DMSO value, meaning that
hits would have an absorbance below 0.065. We identified that the FDA approved drug capecitabine
had an average absorbance of 0.035. To perform a dosing series, capecitabine was diluted in a 1:2
ratio, making 13 dilutions total. The dosing series revealed that capecitabine is most effective at doses
lower than 6.25 μM. Through this process, we determined that the oncological drug Capecitabine
(Xeloda) has dose dependent antibiotic properties. Capecitabine is a prodrug to U5 fluorouracil, used

Essay on A Study of Perspectives
A Study of Perspectives
Livingston s documentary Paris is Burning inspired an awareness of being that I had not previously
experienced. The film urges the spectator to reevaluate not only one s breadth of knowledge of the
black gay culture in the 80 s, but also the perspectives from which one views the film. Personally
speaking, the easiest evaluation of the latter topic would be the perspective of a privileged white
straight female born into a sheltered and socially traditional household. This background would thus
color my reaction to the film: one of intense sadness for the featured interviewees who yearned for an
existence which was mostly unobtainable except in the case of extreme sacrifice and typically led to
social ostracizing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This new found perspective, achieved during class discussions and readings, was the finale of the
topic for me until I checked my mailbox after class the following day.
In my mailbox was an honor code abstract detailing a case brought before the council in previous
months. My first thought when carrying the abstract home with me was curiosity at what felt and
looked to be a massive case summery of around 30 pages. I settled down to read it. The case abstract
dealt with an occurrence two semesters ago during a Halloween dance on Bryn Mawr s campus. Two
Haverford male students attended the Hallween party at Rhoads dressed as two specific female Black
popstars. They had painted themselves brown and attached prosthetic breasts and buttocks to their
bodies. (The Muppets abstract, pg. 1) The case abstract is incredibly detailed in documenting all
parties statements and reactions.
After the Halloween party where they wore their costumes the entire night the two males felt
necessary to write an explanation to the community after hearing some rumblings about their costume
from friends and strangers alike. They explained that they had no intention on offending anyone in the
community, but had simply chosen the costumes because of its ridiculous nature. The abstract
explains, [Bert said] they saw white plastic breasts and considered dressing as topless women. Then
they saw the black breasts and butts and decided

Melba Pattillo Beals, Cear Chavez, And Mother Jones
It s very hard to stand up for people s rights, but Melba Pattillo Beals, Cesar Chavez, and Mother
Jones are three individuals that did. Melba fought for equality while Chavez and Mother Jones worked
to improve working conditions. These three heroic individuals all enacted change in a positive way for
human rights.
Melba Pattillo Beals was a very brave individual who fought to end segregation. She, along with eight
other students integrated Central High School, which was an all white prestigious school. She was
mistreated by her peers, for example, Melba states that on the first day of school I was trying to escape
the hanging rope of a lynch mob, dodging lightened sticks of dynamite, and washing away burning
acid sprayed in my eyes (Beals 1). Melba went through many challenges in her days integrating, but
she continued to step up to the plate, showing how brave and determined she was. In addition, while
Melba was trying to use the restroom, flaming paper balls came piling down on her, and as she
screamed for help, she breathed it in and choked, finally she threw her textbooks at the attackers as
defense (Beals 164). This shows the fact that Melba has courage and is not afraid to fight back. In the
end it was all worth it, Melba ended up being able to attend San Francisco State University, where she
roomed with people of different skin colors (Beals 310). In conclusion, she came a long way and went

The purpose of this essay is to examine, the notion of music being a part of a deaf individual s life
may seem contradictory, but there is evidence that music is and has been a part of many deaf people s
lives. Music is and has been a part of the Deaf culture, including, but not limited to, Deaf musicians,
utilising music to teach speech. The primary purpose of this thesis was to explore the relation between
Deaf culture and music and examine the role of music in the deaf culture and to relate the findings to
current practices in music education programs for hearing impaired students historically and presently.
We also look at the introduction of sign language interpreters in live vocal music performances as well
pre recorded shows and music videos and also how it is being adopted in the music industry.
Secondary purposes of the study were to accumulate data of ways in which the music industry has
provided for the Deaf Communities by organising concerts and raves for them.

Different Perspectives of Human Resource Departments
As I was doing my research and going through loads of articles and factsheet about Human Resource
Development, I came across these different perspectives about HRD. For example, DeS imone Harris
(1998:3) make the comment that Human Resource Development is a relatively new term, but not a
new concept . McGoldrick and Stewart (1996:1) tell us that HRD is a relatively new concept that has
yet to become fully established and accepted, either within professional practice or as a focus of
academic enquiry. The role of HR based from CIPD Personnel Standard Lead Body states: To
contribute to the short and long term success of organisations, by forming and managing the
environment in which people s individual and collective contributions are maximised . Human
Resource Department is also dependable for making human resource policies that will help an or

and training as well as its commitments in relation to regulation and corporate governance. For
example, the correct allowable leave of absence of an employee or other benefits, it will normally be
necessary to meet provisions within employment contracts. The establishment of an HR Policy, which
sets out obligations, standards of behavior and document disciplinary procedures, is now the standard
approach to meeting these obligations. HRD (Human Resource Development) also focuses on

Canada did many things in this conflict, one of the most important was that Canada helped secure

Canadian military personnel served in the Korean War, during both the combat phase and as

Canada aid South Korea in combat, but Canada also aided South Korea in the peacekeeping phase

Instead, as the negotiations dragged on for two years, the war became a stalemate (2000). Even after

The Importance Of Being Used During The Classical Period...
In the first movement of Wolfgang Mozart s piece Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, it presents numerous
features of what is being used during the classical period of music. The recording that was made by
the Prague Chamber Orchestra is a good way to hear all of the classical features in the first movement.
The first movement is the first track on the album that was published in 1985. While it has an
excellent recording of the movement, it is not a traditional quartet but a larger ensemble. Along with
that, the score to the piece itself is a good aid to see the features presented as well. It is a good visual
aid to pinpoint where the classical features are in the first movement, and it is good to use along with
the audio recording so the listener can see where the features may be without fully analyzing the
movement, despite it being a mini score. With its features, it is also in a very popular form that was
used during the classical period. In his article Sonata Form , James Webster breaks down and
describes what sonata form is and how it was used. He also briefly discusses the distinction between
sonata form and its other related forms even though the first movement to Mozart s piece is in one
version of the sonata form. One biography about Wolfgang Mozart, which was found on The

Should the driving age be raised?
Once I turned 16 years old I started learning the basic rules of the road and driving. I was learning

fundamentals of how to be responsible for myself and others before getting on the road with other
drivers. Once I got enough practice I was driving on the road with supervision until I was able to

from someone that has been driving for about a year now I believe the driving age should not be

Social Inquiry And A Natural Human Activity
Human beings seek a general understanding of their environment or the world around them. This is
what is known as inquiry and it is a natural human activity. People recognize that present
circumstances usually affect the future and as such, they need to make decisions regarding their
present situation to have a better future compared to the present circumstance. Such needs push them
to inquire about both the present and the future situations to develop and give them a better chance of
having a comfortable life. Through social inquiry, people ask questions, they gather the information
and examine the background to most of the important societal events and ideas (Pollner, 2010).

Social inquiry is a systematically way of thinking. It is a way that the mind revels if a circumstance or
situation is true or false even when other things point to the same outcome.
Social inquiry is where the situations are broken down and looking at it to determine why such
occurrences happened or took place. Assumptions is what we humans do on a daily basis, not
following it up or trying to understand the circumstance behind it (Greene, 2007). Everyday
assumptions are made mainly because we as individuals have been brought up to believe that situation
or circumstance to be true. Most of the situations are what human beings have been brought up
understanding it that way. Everyday assumptions are made from what human beings learn on a daily
basis. They are based on who people interact with such as environment. As such, the difference in
regard to social inquiry arises. Where everyday assumption depends on what human beings learn and
their interaction to different phenomena, social inquiry tries to understand better through different
methods of research. Another difference between the two is the people understand. Everyday
assumption changes over time. In a certain period, the assumption may mean something, however, in
another period it changes meaning to mean a totally different thing. Social inquiry however rests its
case when a conclusion is reached about the situation or circumstance. The matter can only be
revisited if it is felt that the investigation or

The Universal Theme of Good vs. Evil in Literature
The Universal theme of good vs. evil
The universal theme of good and evil is one of the most commonly used themes in literature. In
literature some writers choose to directly state themes of confidence, while others allow them to
indirectly develop. English literature often tends to concern itself more and more with the intended
meanings of the work through common stories of good and evil those are holding specific symbolic
meanings, whether these meanings represent good or evil, the readers continue to see the true
meanings of select works. Writers most often develop works using themes of good and evil, whether
they state them symbolically or directly. Readers may determine a theme as an idea, point of view, or
perception, embodied and expanded upon in a work. Good and Evil in Terms of Religious Beliefs
Good is usually associated with ideas of God. Evil is usually associated with ideas of the devil. When
the writer conveys messages of good and evil, they commonly use the symbols of light and dark, or
general opposites. Light, remaining the universal symbol of good, may be defined as love, happiness,
or even as a heavenly presence. As Opposing to darkness which continues to represent evil as anything
threatening, cold hearted, or aggressive. Light tends to expresses a positive affirmation while darkness
carries the negative sense of chaos.

Ruby is especially caring towards others. An example of this is when she stands up for Ronald to keep
him out of trouble, the little fella s going rumma, crazy. He s either gonna cry or run. Here, the authors
show the amount of care Ruby shows towards others. Another example is when she lets Maisey come
joint first in the race with her, Maisey! I can t beat her. This highlights the kind nature of Ruby, as she
knows Maisey will be happy if she wins the race, and sacrifices her first place position to make
Maisey happy. Equally, Molly is also a kind and caring person. An example of this is when she takes
Grace and Daisey along when she escapes, even though it will slow her down. In this example, the
director emphasises how caring the protagonist is as she is willing to increase the risk of being caught
just to save others. In the book and the film, both protagonists are portrayed to be incredibly kind and
caring individuals. Surely, this leads to the conclusion that both of these people should labelled

Argument Of Cultural Relativism
Cultural Relativism
Cultural relativism is the way society separates right from wrong within a culture. What we describe
as good and bad is based off of our cultural beliefs. Cultural relativism argues that no culture is better
than any other and all their beliefs are equally valid. The way that modern society is has made it
possible for almost everything to be justified.
Three arguments that are against objective values were found on The Ethical Life by Russ Shafer
Landau (P. 205) textbook that identify two problems with the cultural relativist s argument are:
1. Morality is a product of culture,
2. Cultures disagree widely about morality, and
3. There s no clear way to resolve moral differences
These arguments were made by fictional Ima Relativist created by Harry Gensler. Ima Relativist
believes that morality is about objective facts. There is more to these arguments that once they are
well analyzed they are read differently with another meaning to them. These arguments are against
objective values. Since morality is a product of culture, there can t be objective moral truths (Shafer
Landau, P. 205). The problem with this quote is that what a culture produces can express truths about
how people live. Everything we say and do is based off our culture and what we were taught to do, yet
some express objective truths.
Since cultures disagree widely about morality, there can t be objective moral truths (Shafer Landau, P.
205). Just because there is some kind of

Value Chain Analysis By Jim Riley
Jim Riley published study notes about value chain analysis and he teaches that value chain analysis
describes the activities that take place in a business and relates these activities to an analysis of the
competitive strength of the business. This paper includes comparing and contrasting two articles. The
first article is The 7 Steps of Software Development Case Study Chapter 1 but the second one is Value
Chain Analysis by Jim Riley. Also, these two articles will be applied to the company Pep Boys, which
I chose to do the value chain analysis to. Since I do not work yet, I chose Pep Boys because my close
friend works there as a vice president of marketing. There are seven traditional steps that can go bad in
a software development project but if you follow all these steps than your software project is going to
be in a better shape and it should not have that many crashes. The first step is preliminary
investigation or analysis, where software developers and project managers clarify the requirements to
project sponsors. Second is specification and requirements analysis, which involves taking the
requirements and describing them in a way meaningful to programmers. The third step is design or
architecture, which gets into more low level details. The next step is where the program is built, also
called as development or coding. The fifth step is testing and documentation, which makes sure that
the program functions as required and that the program s functionality is

correctional officer Essay
correctional officer CAREER RESEARCH REPORT
The career I have chosen to pursue after graduation is a Correctional Officer.
Correctional Officer s have been around for a very long time and were designed to keep major
offenders off the street after they have been arrested by the Police. The offenders are put in a holding
cell at a Pre Trial Centre awaiting their court date.
Correctional Officers are a very important part of the Justice System because it keeps high profile
criminals off the street and locked up even before they are proven innocent or guilty. The Correctional
Facility in many ways is a lot like a jail, from what I saw when I toured the new Pre Trial Centre in
Port Coquitlam. There are large thick metal doors to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The new prisoner is then admitted into their pod . Rather than keep ALL the inmates together in one
large group, they are broken down into smaller groups. Each group lives in their own pod. Each pod
had a central living space and outside fresh air lounge. The individual cells surround the living area
and there are three additional floors that overlook the central living space that you reach by inside
stairs. Each level contains approximately 10 individual cells. Some information was not available to
us (the public) as it is confidential. Information such as how many Officers work in a pod per shift.
The inmates are served their meals in the central living space and it the Correctional Officers job to
count everything they take. Items such as jam containers, plastic knives and forks are made into
weapons by the ingenious inmates. After they are given their meals and have had time to go to the
gym, they are then put back into their cell for the night.
Working in a Correctional Facility is a very stressful environment. Everything is done by the book and
not following the protocol could mean termination of your employment. A Corrections Officer is a
Government job which means you get a great salary that could range from $35,000.00 $70,000.00 a
year. You get great benefits with health care and dental care. There are Correctional Facilities all over
Canada, which means this job could allow you to move all over the country. Also, if you work in the

The Importance Of False Prophets
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed,
accurately handling the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15) A false teacher can be anyone in a position of
spiritual authority. Ever heard of wolves in sheep clothing? This idiom is used to describe those
playing a role contrary to their real character. Wolves don t often attack wolves, but they do go after
sheep. The same is so when it comes to false prophets they deceive people by bringing destructive
teachings, often appealing to our fallen nature.
By definition a false prophet is one who falsely claims the gift of prophecy or divine inspiration, or
who uses that gift for evil ends. Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in
the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch out
that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. Anyone who runs
ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the
teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do
not take him into your house or welcome him. Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work
(2 John 7 11). False prophets prophesied falsehoods From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for
gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit (Jeremiah 6:13), deceived the people with their
dreams Yes, this is what the LORD

Reconstruction Failed For African Americans
Reconstruction failed for African Americans. By the 1890 s all optimism that came as a result of the
Constitutional rights guaranteed to them by the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments was gone. Their
reality, particularly for those in the South, was one of lynchings, Jim Crowe laws, and voting
restrictions. They faced discrimination, segregation, limited educational opportunities, and a tenant
farming system that only slightly differed from slavery. In the early twentieth century, visionaries such
as Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, and Marcus Garvey recognized the urgent need for change.
These great leaders were in agreement that action was required to uplift the African American race.
However, their philosophies on how to approach it were vastly different. Born a slave on a Virginia
farm, Booker Taliaferro Washington (1856 1915) rose to become one of the most influential African
American intellectuals of the late 19th century. He was nine years old when the Civil War ended. He
worked hard as a young child and at 16, he left home to attend Hampton Institute. One of the few
black high schools in the South, it focused on industrial and agricultural training while maintaining an
extremely structured curriculum that stressed discipline and high moral character. Washington thrived
in that environment. He eventually went on to head a new school in Tuskegee, Alabama. The
Tuskegee Institute was devoted to the training of black teachers, farmers, and skilled workers. Under

Poverty and Its Impact on Development in the Caribbean
The aim of every Caribbean country is to realize growth and development over time so as to achieve
first world status. Most of the Caribbean countries are ranked as middle income countries. These
countries realize that achieving first world status is a long term initiative given the many social
problems that we face as a Caribbean nation. Among the many social problems that we face, poverty
is the most pervasive of them all. Despite the effort of many of these countries to try and eradicate
poverty it continues to account for the slow pace at which these countries develop. Commenting on
the Caribbean, Carlson (1999) points to two key factors which have greatly impeded the spread and
potential for economic growth and development; inequity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The inability of Caribbean economies to generate jobs, especially a greater proportion of higher
paying jobs, is thus one of the underlying reasons for the persistence of poverty. The second major
reason for widespread poverty in the Caribbean is inequality of income and wealth within the
countries. Measurement of income inequality carried out in thirteen Caribbean countries between 1996
and 2002 show significant income inequality. The extent of inequality being greater in St. Vincent and
the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Grenada, Jamaica and Belize, all of which are countries with a substantial
incidence of poverty. Income inequality generates social inequality and social exclusion. A less
unequal income distribution would raise income levels among the poor, transiting some of them out of
poverty, thereby reducing the extent of social exclusion and disaffection. Inequality of wealth implies
unequal access to financial and physical resources as a basis for income generation. Similarly to
income, therefore, a less unequal distribution of wealth would be consistent with a lower incidence of
poverty. A third is that there is global inequality of income, access to resources, and in consumption.
Evidence produced by a number of studies show conclusively that the distribution of income between
rich and poor countries has

A graduate of Yale University and the University of Iowa, she divides her time between Northern California and Princeton, New Jersey. AN INTERVIEW WITH LAN SAMANTHA CHANG Many of the families in Hunger have attempted to sever themselves from the past in order to build a future. Was this how your parents coped with starting over in America? What parts of Chinese culture did they celebrate? How were these conflicts resolved? Well, we re a passionate family (my mother says it s my father s blood) and I remember some serious household arguments going on when I was a child. Most of the fights took place between my father and my two older sisters. My sisters were fighting for permission to do things that typical American teenagers do: to join the soccer team, sleep over at friends houses, go on dates. My sisters didn t get everything they wanted. For example, my parents decided they would be allowed to go to movies with boys, but only matinees. My parents believed that going to movies at night might encourage bad behavior. I could never understand this; aren t movie theaters as dark in the afternoon as they are at night? Anyway, I can now also see that the fights were really about my sisters desires to be individuals, to act in the world and be responsible for themselves. My parents had not grown up with role models for such independent young women. The conflict was inevitable and necessary; it was part of our family s gradual movement into American culture. Will you discuss how and why you decided to become a writer? I have wanted to be a writer since before I could read. As a child, I copied picture books out onto sheets of paper, with the illustrations and all of the letters, before I could even put ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Similarities Between Gegosh And The Epic Of Gilgamesh There are many shared experiences that make the journeys of Gilgamesh and Orestes similar. Orestes and Gilgamesh reform their characters by going through a series of events; at each event, their character is modified or strengthened in a analogous way by their communities or peers. Although they both begin content with their situations, they become aware that something needs to change in order for there to be peace within their societies. Following this realization, various influences force the leading characters to go through with their personal trials that they have been contemplating, in turn forcing them to have the strength and courage that they had not possessed prior to this point. In order to help Gilgamesh and Orestes learn the virtue and importance in comradery and community, each is paired with a companion to aid them in their trials. At the conclusion of the stories, the characters fully comprehend that the wellbeing of the community is more important than their own person gains. Both title characters from The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Oresteia undergo parallel journeys, with the most pivotal similarity being the effect that the community has on the shaping events that Gilgamesh and Orestes undergo. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh begins as an inconsiderate ruler who does not respect his people or the community. It becomes clear from early on in the novel that Gilgamesh has caused an upset in society, and for the population to function smoothly he has to change his ways. The text reads, Neither the father s son nor the wife of the noble is safe in Uruk; neither the mother s daughter nor the warrior s bride is safe (Gilgamesh, I:i). This excerpt shows how the subjects under Gilgamesh s rule were scared of him. Not a soul in the town was safe because of the king, and this caused a great upset to the ways of society. Gilgamesh did not see the wrong in his doings and did not take into account the consideration the feelings of his pupils. In order for the community to obtain peace, their ruler will have to learn that he is the change that needs to occur. Nursing Philosophy And The Metaparadigm According to Allison Marchuk, nursing philosophy is a statement of fundamental and universal assumptions, beliefs, and principles about nature of knowledge and truth and the nature of the entities represented in the metaparadigm (Marchuk, 2014). From as early as birth babies communicate through crying in order to tell parents what they want. Parents soon learn to distinguish between the hungry cry, the wet/dirty cry and the tired cry. According to Halliday, 1975, children begin to learn their first language from between six eighteen months old. He believes children are learning a system of meanings . He looks at language from a functional point of view and suggests there are seven functions that language serves for young children. The first four of these functions ensure that social, emotional and physical needs are catered to, they are called, Instrumental, Regulatory, Interactional and Personal. Instrumental refers to a child using language to ensure they get what they need or want. The Regulatory function tells others what to do in order to control their behaviour. The Interactional function relates to the use of language in order to interact with the people around the child particularly those seen as important such as parents and siblings or close friends. All aspects of society were male dominated, they ruled, and so all laws and acts were in the favour of males. The poems are great examples of how society was when they were written, they also mirror the roles each gender played in the various aspect of life, the males active and controlling, the women passive, and they had to be compliant. How the Properties of Water are Related to Its Roles in Living Organisms and as a Living Environment for Living Organisms Over 70% of the world s surface is covered by water, 95% of which consists of salty oceans; water is essential to all life forms. A molecule of water consists of two hydrogen atoms covalently bound to one atom of oxygen which gives a formula of H2O. When water molecules are close together their positive and negative regions are attracted to the oppositely charged regions of nearby molecules. The force of attraction, shown in the diagram below as a dotted line, is called a hydrogen bond. Each water molecule is hydrogen bonded to four others. It is these hydrogen bonds and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This also means that, compared with air, water releases heat energy slowly when situations cause it to cool. Water s high specific heat helps organisms to regulate their body temperatures more effectively. Water vapour is a greenhouse gas, and both the capability to keep heat in and to transfer heat from the tropics serves to buffer temperatures on Earth. For example, as one half of the Earth rotates away from the sun the fall in temperature is much more gradual than it would have been if there was no water vapour in the atmosphere. As water expands when it freezes it allows ice to float on the surface which creates an insulating layer on lakes and rivers. This prevents the entire body of water and all the organisms living in it from freezing. The weak hydrogen bonding means that ice has a lot of empty space. When ice melts the frozen geometry is removed, but not all the hydrogen bonds are broken. The molecules begin to pack more closely together to fill some of the empty space. Thus, liquid water is denser than ice. Water has its greatest density at 4°C and this is why the top of a lake freezes first. The cooler part freezes and the more dense water at slightly higher temperature sinks to the bottom. This helps to protect fresh water organisms which live in the bottom. The empty space also means that ice does not conduct heat very well ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Part of our great nation s history involves a history that is not always so great. Our country has endured many wars, struggles, economic and agricultural hardship and a history that many would call shameful. However, the United States has evolved over hundreds of years and has transcended its very existence and influenced every corner of the globe, because of those past hardships our country has grown into what has become the most diverse, opportunistic and free country the world has ever known. In this essay, I will discuss the Apache Indians long and proud culture in conjunction with their own personal struggles as a Native American tribe in North America. Apache Indians are dated back to 850 A.D. when they traveled south from Alaska and Canada, they continued their southern descent until they eventually settled throughout regions in the southwestern parts of the United States. Their first original settlements included areas in northern Mexico, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and southern Colorado. Today the Apache live on reservations on some four and a half million acres of land that are spread across Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Within the Apache tribe there are ten subgroups, one of which is closely related to the Apache and share the same dialect, but has recently become its own tribe known as the Navajo. Their investigation aroused from various previous studies that showed positive evidence of the effectiveness of captioned video in improving learners skill. However, many of prior studies did not provide exact measurement on which part(s) learners paid attention to when they watched captioned and non captioned video. The absence of precise measurement limited the finding of the previous studies (Gass, Sydorenko, Winke 2013). Therefore, using eye tracking device, they wanted to observe how often foreign language learners read captions on captioned videos. They also intended to investigate whether specific foreign language and the familiarity of the video content play role in learners attention to the captions. Thirty three college level foreign language learners who are in their fourth semester were included in this study. They are English speaker learners of Arabic (n = 7), Chinese (n = 7), Russian (n = 8), and Spanish (n = 10) with no experience of studying abroad. Dhamma does not imply specific biological or social obligations, but maintains a comparable philosophical construct. The Buddhist definition of right conduct and personal obligation, dhamma is the path which must be taken to escape the suffering of worldly life. Other similarities between Hinduism and Buddhism are more apparent. Both religions maintain a broad perspective of religious worship. Hinduism is polytheistic while Buddhism maintains no structured belief in an independent, sentient god like entity (especially in human form). Either of these concepts yields a malleable religion which can adjust and conform to local tradition and fluctuations in intellectual and spiritual thought. Both religions believe in a system of reincarnation, and both religions emphasize the community over the self. The major rift between the two religions seems to stem from the role of social structure in the two religions. Hinduism s caste system perpetuates a fatalism and apathy toward social rights and advancement while reinforcing the ruling establishment. Buddhism concentrates on the individual s release from suffering, implying no overriding social definition. The outstanding example of Hinduism s establishment tendencies is the caste system. Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window and Cornell Woolrich s It had to be Murder, whilst obeying and selectively utilising a few original conventions, manifest the ideology and social concerns of the postwar 1950s society in aspects of the modus operandi of the investigation, gender roles and the shift ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast, Lisa Fremont, Jefferies lover, whilst staying true to the convention of an intuitive, female detective, also explores the role of female companions by acting as a physical extension for Jefferies. She employs acts of sleuthing by bravely acquiring key evidence such as the wedding ring, while disregarding her safety. The shot of Thorwald s violence against Lisa is captured with long shot technique in the film Rear Window. This again reminds the audience that they are seeing through Jefferies eyes and reinforces the need for a physical sidekick to assist the crippled immobile protagonist. Hitchcock reflects on the late First Wave Feminism movement in the 1950s, by placing women in more active and dominant roles when solving crimes, highlighting the growing roles of women in society (Gender.cawater info.net, n.d.). Woolrich in his story, It Had to murder, replaces both Lisa and Stella with a male character Sam. This delineating adherence to traditional gender roles, disregarding the value of female intuition.. • 20. The Effect Of Birth Order On Personality For many years, there s been an ongoing debate as to whether birth order truly has an effect on the way we behave throughout our development. The article I ve selected argues against the notion that these two correlate. The sample can be found at PNAS.org, otherwise known as the Proceedings of the National Academy of the United States of America. Titled, Examining the Effects of Birth Order on Personality three authors collectively come to this agreement that there are no lasting effects from birth order in long term personality traits. The names of these authors are, Julia M. Roher, Boris Eglaff, and Stefan C. Schmukle. They explore previous research on the subject from various psychologists, and later decide to conduct their own research and draw conclusions thereafter. I found the article to be very straightforward in its approach. The subject matter was presented clearly within the opening sentences. Each point was elaborated thoroughly, and it was written in a way both professionals, and average readers could comprehend the language. The terms were relatively relatable, no advanced medical terminology was mentioned, and evidence was given for each argument presented in their research. Statistics and table charts played a significant role in demonstrating credibility of the findings. There were three distinct points made in contrast to birth order affecting personality. Multiple times Corrie hears Betsie speak of how sorry she felt for the German soldiers and how she wishes she could help them see the err of their ways. Betsie s compassion towards her captors, assaulters, and enemies profoundly illustrates her love for the human race and the desire she has that all know Christ. While in the Vught concentration camp, Betsie states, Corrie, if people can be taught to hate, they can be taught to love! We must find a way, no matter how long it takes... . Betsie sees the potential for goodness in everyone she meets despite their actions. Overall, these three themes contribute to the central message of the novel. As a whole, the novel contains a few weaknesses. The first weakness arises from the time difference between the events and the writing of the novel. Corrie ten Boom wrote THE HIDING PLACE twenty years after the fact. It is extremely likely that the events depicted in the novel are shades of what actually occurred. Memories fade and time distorts the reality of the past and because of this, I feel that the book would have been more factually accurate had Corrie ten Boom written it much sooner. Another weakness in the book derives itself from ten Boom s heavy reliance on her Christian faith. As I read the book, I felt that some of the circumstances were glossed over and events were chocked up to being merely miracles. However, I do agree with Corrie ten Boom s major premise throughout the novel that religion can play a crucial role during tough ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Would you continue to put in the effort or stop because you know you are guaranteed the A+? Most humans would stop because the effort was no longer needed. Rich and powerful people have this mindset when it comes to empathy and compassion to others. They don t see the need to connect to the feelings of others because it seems irrelevant to their life. Agreeing with the article Rich people just care less by Daniel Goleman, I too believe that high salaried and statused people do not have as good interpersonal relationships as low class workers because they lack interest in understanding others situations. Since rich people typically lack meaningful interaction with lower classes or people of different ethnicities, they fail to see that they are often good people that don t deserve to be stereotyped. Instead, they look at the differences between them causing the empathy gap. Clearly rich people have benefits in life but money can t buy many things. Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by the serotype Salmonella typhi and can be fatal without proper intervention. Instances of resistant typhoid are high in less developed countries. Resistance occurs when genetic mutations prevent antibiotic mechanisms of action, making current antibiotics less effective. The purpose of this drug screen was to target oncological drugs and diversity library compounds to identify novel antibiotic substances. To perform the initial drug screen, we exposed Salmonella typhimurium to various compounds and chemotherapeutic drugs. The positive and negative controls were ampicillin and Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), respectively. We used spectrophotometry to measure the growth of salmonella in the plate. Hits were identified as compounds with an absorbance below 2 standard deviations of the mean DMSO value, meaning that hits would have an absorbance below 0.065. We identified that the FDA approved drug capecitabine had an average absorbance of 0.035. To perform a dosing series, capecitabine was diluted in a 1:2 ratio, making 13 dilutions total. The protagonists from Us Mob Walawurru and Rabbit Proof Fence are both heroic characters; however, they show their heroism to a different extent. Both Ruby from Us Mob Walawurru and Molly from Rabbit Proof Fence are heroic partly because of their outstanding courage. Ruby is an incredibly brave character and she displays her courage consistently throughout the course of the novel. An example of her bravery is when she leaves her country to go on a sports trip, although she is unsure of what lies ahead I thought about how this was the first time I d be leaving our country. I started to worry for my family and home. Here, the authors portray the bravery of this character, as she is not afraid to try something new. Similarly, Molly is also a brave character, ... An example of this is when she stands up for Ronald to keep him out of trouble, the little fella s going rumma, crazy. He s either gonna cry or run. Here, the authors show the amount of care Ruby shows towards others. Another example is when she lets Maisey come joint first in the race with her, Maisey! I can t beat her. This highlights the kind nature of Ruby, as she knows Maisey will be happy if she wins the race, and sacrifices her first place position to make Maisey happy. Equally, Molly is also a kind and caring person. An example of this is when she takes Grace and Daisey along when she escapes, even though it will slow her down. In this example, the director emphasises how caring the protagonist is as she is willing to increase the risk of being caught just to save others. In the book and the film, both protagonists are portrayed to be incredibly kind and caring individuals. Surely, this leads to the conclusion that both of these people should labelled ... • 41. Argument Of Cultural Relativism Cultural Relativism Cultural relativism is the way society separates right from wrong within a culture. What we describe as good and bad is based off of our cultural beliefs. Cultural relativism argues that no culture is better than any other and all their beliefs are equally valid. The way that modern society is has made it possible for almost everything to be justified. Three arguments that are against objective values were found on The Ethical Life by Russ Shafer Landau (P. 205) textbook that identify two problems with the cultural relativist s argument are: 1. Morality is a product of culture, 2. Cultures disagree widely about morality, and 3. There s no clear way to resolve moral differences These arguments were made by fictional Ima Relativist created by Harry Gensler. Ima Relativist believes that morality is about objective facts. There is more to these arguments that once they are well analyzed they are read differently with another meaning to them. These arguments are against objective values. Since morality is a product of culture, there can t be objective moral truths (Shafer Landau, P. 205). The problem with this quote is that what a culture produces can express truths about how people live. Everything we say and do is based off our culture and what we were taught to do, yet some express objective truths. Since cultures disagree widely about morality, there can t be objective moral truths (Shafer Landau, P. 205). Just because there is some kind of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Value Chain Analysis By Jim Riley Jim Riley published study notes about value chain analysis and he teaches that value chain analysis describes the activities that take place in a business and relates these activities to an analysis of the competitive strength of the business. This paper includes comparing and contrasting two articles. The first article is The 7 Steps of Software Development Case Study Chapter 1 but the second one is Value Chain Analysis by Jim Riley. Also, these two articles will be applied to the company Pep Boys, which I chose to do the value chain analysis to. Since I do not work yet, I chose Pep Boys because my close friend works there as a vice president of marketing. There are seven traditional steps that can go bad in a software development project but if you follow all these steps than your software project is going to be in a better shape and it should not have that many crashes. The first step is preliminary investigation or analysis, where software developers and project managers clarify the requirements to project sponsors. Second is specification and requirements analysis, which involves taking the requirements and describing them in a way meaningful to programmers. The third step is design or architecture, which gets into more low level details. The next step is where the program is built, also called as development or coding. The fifth step is testing and documentation, which makes sure that the program functions as required and that the program s functionality is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. correctional officer Essay correctional officer CAREER RESEARCH REPORT The career I have chosen to pursue after graduation is a Correctional Officer. Correctional Officer s have been around for a very long time and were designed to keep major offenders off the street after they have been arrested by the Police. The offenders are put in a holding cell at a Pre Trial Centre awaiting their court date. Correctional Officers are a very important part of the Justice System because it keeps high profile criminals off the street and locked up even before they are proven innocent or guilty. The Correctional Facility in many ways is a lot like a jail, from what I saw when I toured the new Pre Trial Centre in Port Coquitlam. There are large thick metal doors to ... Each group lives in their own pod. Each pod had a central living space and outside fresh air lounge. The individual cells surround the living area and there are three additional floors that overlook the central living space that you reach by inside stairs. Each level contains approximately 10 individual cells. Some information was not available to us (the public) as it is confidential. Information such as how many Officers work in a pod per shift. The inmates are served their meals in the central living space and it the Correctional Officers job to count everything they take. Items such as jam containers, plastic knives and forks are made into weapons by the ingenious inmates. After they are given their meals and have had time to go to the gym, they are then put back into their cell for the night. Working in a Correctional Facility is a very stressful environment. Everything is done by the book and not following the protocol could mean termination of your employment. A Corrections Officer is a Government job which means you get a great salary that could range from $35,000.00 $70,000.00 a year. You get great benefits with health care and dental care. • 44. The Importance Of False Prophets Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15) A false teacher can be anyone in a position of spiritual authority. Ever heard of wolves in sheep clothing? This idiom is used to describe those playing a role contrary to their real character. Wolves don t often attack wolves, but they do go after sheep. The same is so when it comes to false prophets they deceive people by bringing destructive teachings, often appealing to our fallen nature. By definition a false prophet is one who falsely claims the gift of prophecy or divine inspiration, or who uses that gift for evil ends. Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work (2 John 7 11). False prophets prophesied falsehoods From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit (Jeremiah 6:13), deceived the people with their dreams Yes, this is what the LORD ... • 45. Reconstruction Failed For African Americans Reconstruction failed for African Americans. By the 1890 s all optimism that came as a result of the Constitutional rights guaranteed to them by the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments was gone. Their reality, particularly for those in the South, was one of lynchings, Jim Crowe laws, and voting restrictions. They faced discrimination, segregation, limited educational opportunities, and a tenant farming system that only slightly differed from slavery. In the early twentieth century, visionaries such as Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, and Marcus Garvey recognized the urgent need for change. These great leaders were in agreement that action was required to uplift the African American race. However, their philosophies on how to approach it were vastly different. Born a slave on a Virginia farm, Booker Taliaferro Washington (1856 1915) rose to become one of the most influential African American intellectuals of the late 19th century. He was nine years old when the Civil War ended. He worked hard as a young child and at 16, he left home to attend Hampton Institute. One of the few black high schools in the South, it focused on industrial and agricultural training while maintaining an extremely structured curriculum that stressed discipline and high moral character. Washington thrived in that environment. He eventually went on to head a new school in Tuskegee, Alabama. The Tuskegee Institute was devoted to the training of black teachers, farmers, and skilled workers. Under his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Poverty and Its Impact on Development in the Caribbean The aim of every Caribbean country is to realize growth and development over time so as to achieve first world status. Most of the Caribbean countries are ranked as middle income countries. These countries realize that achieving first world status is a long term initiative given the many social problems that we face as a Caribbean nation. Among the many social problems that we face, poverty is the most pervasive of them all. Despite the effort of many of these countries to try and eradicate poverty it continues to account for the slow pace at which these countries develop. Commenting on the Caribbean, Carlson (1999) points to two key factors which have greatly impeded the spread and potential for economic growth and development; inequity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The inability of Caribbean economies to generate jobs, especially a greater proportion of higher paying jobs, is thus one of the underlying reasons for the persistence of poverty. The second major reason for widespread poverty in the Caribbean is inequality of income and wealth within the countries. Measurement of income inequality carried out in thirteen Caribbean countries between 1996 and 2002 show significant income inequality. The extent of inequality being greater in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Grenada, Jamaica and Belize, all of which are countries with a substantial incidence of poverty. Income inequality generates social inequality and social exclusion. A less unequal income distribution would raise income levels among the poor, transiting some of them out of poverty, thereby reducing the extent of social exclusion and disaffection. Inequality of wealth implies unequal access to financial and physical resources as a basis for income generation. Similarly to income, therefore, a less unequal distribution of wealth would be consistent with a lower incidence of poverty. A third is that there is global inequality of income, access to resources, and in consumption. Evidence produced by a number of studies show conclusively that the distribution of income between rich and poor countries has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
