Colin Powell 18 Lessons In Leadership Summary
General (USA RET) Colin L. Powell, 18 Lessons in Leadership General Powell highlights 18 lessons
learned in leadership that are applied to successful companies, and how they are applied to leadership
in his presentation to the Outreach Program, and the Sears Corporate Headquarters. These approaches
can be applied not only in business but life in general. I will highlight three of the lessons that have
impacted my career in the military Lesson 7 Too often in business as well as the military, If it ain t
broke, don t fix it (Powell, C #7). Too often the command as well as enlisted soldiers will use this
analogy to continue to do what they have always done and fight change. Also this leads to allowing
small details to be overlooked because it s been allowed before, these small details, such as production
schedules become larger details. These small little details will cause larger details to be overlooked in
the future. This culture will foster reactivity instead of promoting proactivity (Powell, C #7). This type
of culture is a struggle for leaders to change in the National Guard because of the hometown
mentality, all though we strive to keep the since of community in our units as leaders we have to be
the supporters of change. Be able to answer the why when it is necessary to move in a different
direction, we have to be able to always look beneath the surface and not take situations at face value.
When we have questions or concerns as long as they are morally and

Young Man On Sixth Avenue Summary
People create their own identities/personas by how they act and interact with other people. In literature
authors carefully use diction in order to project who their character is identified or how they want to
be portrayed. In this unit we study how authors creates the individual characters identity. Focusing on
Young man on sixth avenue , The metamorphosis , and Homage to my Hips we will begin to further
our understanding of the creation of identities in text.
Young man on sixth avenue tells the story of a man as he goes throughout the different stages of his
life. In this short story the individual creates his own persona by using different adjectives or diction
to describe his younger self. He spends a great deal of time discussing ... Show more content on

Allowing us to assume the type of person they are. Gregor Samsa is another example of how the
author uses specific diction to describe the character, allowing us to characterize the subject.
Throughout the different phases of this story we begin to view him differently. For instance when the
author inputs this small flashback into the story On the wall directly opposite hung a photograph of
Gregor from his army days in a lieutenant s uniform, his hand on his sword, a carefree smile on his
lips, demanding respect for his bearing and rank . This piece of text is very important because it
allows us to identify him as a respectable member of society and not the slimy scumbag (insect) that
he is first viewed as in the story. We as readers sympathize with him for how he is treated by his
family; developing a level of respect for him. Seeing beneath the fact that he is a bug at the moment.
We view his as being a decent guy. Especially with how he sacrifices his life in order to help his
family despite how they treated him. These different ways that he interacted with the people in the
story allow him to create the innocent persona that he was looking for. Homage to my hips shows us
different side of the same coin in essence. On one side we have a very strong and confident woman
while on the other hand we have a slightly insecure woman. Once again these ideas are

Essay about State’s Children Health Insurance Program
SCHIP stands for State s Children Health Insurance Program introduced in January 24, 1997. The bill
is part of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 which was signed by President William Clinton in August
5, 1997 and became a public law1. The bill allows the States to designate the fund given by the federal
government to families that qualifies under certain conditions. However, in September 7, 1997 it
received a disapproval bill originating from the House. And in 2007, during the 110th Congressional
session, the House introduced the State s Children Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of
2007, H.R. 3963. The bill is introduced by the House Representative John D. Dingell and was placed

After the debate, the bill was reported back to the House Committees with amendments and was
passed with Yeas and Nays of 265 142, and 46 Present4 Roll Call no. 1009. The bill was passed by the
House as Children s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007 Support for injured
Servicemembers Act. And on October 25, 2007, it was received in the Senate and was placed under
Senate Legislative Calendar under Read the First Time. The next day, October 26, 2007, the bill was
read the second and was placed under Senate Legislative under General Orders, Calendar No. 450. On
the same day, a motion for consideration, cloture motion, and its withdrawal were presented in the
Senate. And from October 31 to November 1, 2007, the same actions were taken, until the Senate
passed the bill with the same title, Children s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007
Support for Injured Servicemembers Act, without amendment by voice vote, 64 Yeas, 30 Nays, and 6

How Surface Area Affects the Buoyancy of Wood Essay example
Introduction: The upward force on an object that is in water that allows it to float is called buoyancy.
The buoyant force is always equal to the weight of the water displaced by the object in the water. This
force was discovered by Archimedes, who was in his bathtub when he wondered why objects seemed
lighter when he held them under the water. He found out that if an object is lighter than the weight of
the water it displaces, it will float, but if it is heavier, it will sink. The force of buoyancy is important
in many different areas, and especially in the making of ships. The surface area that is touching the
water of the ship is very large, due to the shape of the hull, and that, beside the density of the ship, is
what keeps the ship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Likewise, the piece of wood with the surface area of 153cm² is the most buoyant, with a buoyancy of
0.606, because it has the most area to receive upward force upon.
Problems and Improvements:
A difficulty I encountered during this experiment was taking the measurements of newtons in the
water. This was because it was hard to find the right place to put the spring balance. It could not be
holding the piece of wood up completely, but it couldn t be not supporting it at all both of these things
would have created inaccurate results. However, I overcame this by spending time getting this balance
right for each measurement, so I could collect the most accurate results as possible. There could still
be minor inaccuracies in these results because of this problem; however a trend is still easily
recognised in the results, so minor inaccuracies are only a small problem. This experiment could be
improved by measuring the density of each of the pieces of wood as well as the surface area. Density,
as well as surface area, also affects buoyancy, so the most accurate results would be gained by
integrating density as a factor of this experiment.
Conclusion:
The results of this experiment did support my hypothesis, and confirm that for a constant mass, the
larger the surface area of the piece of wood, the more buoyant it is.

The Internet And Its Impact On The Web
The Internet has become one of, if not the quickest way to access information since most students
would prefer to turn to these Internet resources first. There s an estimate of 120 million Internet users
in the United States, surfing the web daily. That is why the web has evolved into a more accessible
and user friendly place where a person is able to search for the information they want. Therefore, it is
crucial for a website to maintain its accessibility and user friendly characteristic by keeping a well
designed web page, easy navigations through the site, clear printed words on the page with good color
contrast, etc. Furthermore, in order to receive feedbacks from the users/readers, the website would
require a feedback system and user s support to allow the users to express their opinions of the website
which is very valuable in order to improve the web page. A great example of a website which contains
a lot of these characteristics is CollegeAtlas.com. First, the website has tons of information regarding
Colleges, which is already helpful towards students, as the largest group of people who uses the
internet. College Atlas contains information for different colleges, as well as options to help find a
suitable college for the student s education needs. As one can see, at first glance, the site has a lot of
labeled categories where the user can clicks on and explore located on the top of the web page (See

Horror And Vampires
The Popularity of Horror/Vampires Why do people love the feeling of getting scared? Is it because our
palms become more sweaty? Skin temperature drops? Or is it the more fear people experience, the
more they claim to enjoy themselves? Horror is characterized as an intense feeling of fear, shock, or
disgust. Yet it makes no sense how people love feeling this way. In today s society, we choose our
form of entertainment because we want it to affect us. Dr. Goldstein from the University of Utrecht
states that people have the ability to pay attention as much or as little as they care to in order to control
what effect it has on them, emotionally and otherwise. (Griffiths). Entertainment horror has become a
form of catharsis (Singh). Horror ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For starters, they re a sinister catch all who can symbolize everything from sex fantasies to escapism
from swine flu worries to darker social issues (Alexander). People nowadays are mainly attracted to
vampires by the qualities they represent. The media has portrayed vampires as: loners, smart, cool
looking, fearless, powerful, bad boy, fun individuals. Although these qualities are fairly appealing, we
have been brainwashed into thinking that these qualities make a vampire attractive. In Edgar Allen
Poe s short story Ligeia, the narrator throughout the whole story bragged about how beautiful his
deceased wife Ligeia is. The narrator states that Ligeia s beauty passed through my spirit, there
dwelling as a shrine (Poe 3). Ligeia s beauty mesmerized the narrator to the point where he was
infatuated by her beauty. Jonathan Harker also experiences compelling sexual desires in Bram s
Stroker s Dracula. Jonathan stated that There was something about them that made me uneasy, some
longing and at the same time some deadly fear. I felt in my heart a wicked, burning desire that they
would kiss me with those red lips. It is not good to note this down, lest some day it should meet Mina
s eyes and cause her pain; but it is the truth (Stroker 29). Vampires used their romantic charm and
tricks to retrieve most of their victims. Johann Wolfgang s The Bride of Corinth, illustrated an
example of how falling in love with a vampire could lead to possible consequences. In The Bride of
Corinth, the youngman had sex with the vampire. Towards the end he is killed as she purposely drinks
his blood, the vampire states Still to love the bridegroom I have lost, and the life blood of his heart to
drink (Wolfgang 5). In my opinion falling in love with vampire is risky. People don t know what
vampires are capable of, and what their intentions could be. Vampires are dangerous supernatural
beings. Just by standing in

Herp Protein Synthesis
Viruses have also developed methods to prevent the activity of the transporter associated with antigen
processing, TAP. The TAP complex consists of two protein subunits; TAP1 and TAP2, and is an ATP
dependant peptide transporter essential for the transport of peptides to the ER and binding of the
peptides to MHC class I molecules [11]. Various herpesviruses interfere with antigen presentation
through the blocking the activity of TAP. The Herpes simplex virus type I (HSV 1) encodes the protein
ICP47, which competes with peptides in the cytoplasm to bind to TAP. As a result fewer viral peptides
are transported to the ER for loading onto MHC I molecules. This ICP47 protein consists of 88 amino
acid residues, out of which residues 3 34 act as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Bovine herpsvirus 1 (BoHV 1) produces the protein UL49.5, which also interferes with the
transport of peptides via TAP [13]. The BoHV 1 UL49.5 interacts with the TAP core particle, through
its transmembrane domain and ER luminal domain, and prevents rearrangements in the structure of
TAP. These rearrangements typically occur subsequent to the binding of antigenic peptides and ATP.
Such rearrangements influence the movement of TAP, as during peptide transport the transporter
molecules move slower than those not bound to peptides. However, the binding of UL49.5 hinders
such changes in TAP mobility by preventing structural rearrangements, which are essential for the
translocation of peptides. BoHV 1 UL49.5 also interrupts peptide transport through promoting the
degradation of the TAP1 and TAP2 subunits. This is achieved by the C terminal cytoplasmic tail of
UL49.5 which connects the TAP and UL49.5 complex to ubiquitin, thereby targeting it for proteasome
mediated degradation [12, 13]. This transporter is also a key target for other viral evasion proteins

Advertising Of The Same Media
Comparisons between advertisements of the same media take a specific skill, eye, and intellect to
make these comparisons and contrasts. Comparisons can include the imagery, copy, and the campaign,
these are up to debate for the viewer, to one an advertisement can be provocative, but to another the
advertisement can simply be a form of bandwagon. Calvin Klein and Versace have two internet
advertisements that I believe them to both be provocative in their own special ways, but share a form
of bandwagon. Calvin Klein has an advertisement that features same sex couples and opposite sex
couples; they show texts from them that reveal sexual innuendos and positions. Versace has an
advertisement that displays Lady Gaga in a lavender dress in a very glamorous position on a similar
color couch and background. The campaign of an advertisement helps direct their product or cause to
a certain group or audience. There are many form campaigns; I will be focusing a lot on provocative
and bandwagon. Contrasts between the two advertisements are the Versace with Lady Gaga what you
would think of as a provocative or controversial advertisement is actually debatable, the advertisement
would focus more on a bandwagon like campaign, the brand Versace is a very high end brand for
wealthy people and celebrities, so having a very well know artist and fashion icon modeling the brand
in a glamorous pose, which to some is provocative, but others see it inviting especially the LGBT

Irregular Migrants: Amnesty and Right to Stay
Introduction:
Irregular migrants are people living in a nation illegally. They do not have the citizenship of the
country, or they might have come in as illegal refugees. Residents in another nation with visas but they
have passed they due date or has expired without having obtained the citizenship of the particular
nation are also viewed as irregular migrants in that particular country. Liberal democratic countries, on
the other hand, are those that are not lead under a dictatorship. Progressive countries allow free and

progressive governments also give certain privileges to their citizens such as freedom for adults above
the age of 18years to vote and freedom of employment. They also provide free public education to its
citizens and access to healthcare services in public hospitals.
The debate over the years, however, has been whether liberal democratic nations should tolerate the
entry of irregular migrants into their countries. Questions have also been asked as to what legal and

How did the disruption of the educational system during the Cultural Revolution affect the life

would make it harder for one to obtain a job, I still think it needs to be looked into as why this

Synthesis Essay On Us Postal Service
During today s growing culture and different developments around technology, society has shied away

Analysis Of Venus Cupid Folly And Time
Also known by the titles Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time and A Triumph of Venus , this painting was on
purpose designed as a complex, erotic allegory that includes an extent of iconographic symbols from
the ancient world of mythology. It was a present from Cosimo de Medici to King Francis I of France.
Being rich and vivid in symbolism relating to the constituting ideas of the High Renaissance, the
painting gives Bronzino the opportunity to establish his maestro figure painting and portrait art.
Through personification of qualities and varying contrast and brightness, Bronzino is able to justify
that personal gains outweigh anything and everything that is moral. The picture symbolizes the
aftermath of incestuous actions. Venus is evidently present at the center of the painting, recognizable
by the golden apple in her left hand from the Greek myth The Judgement of Paris. A robust adolescent
male figure with wings can be seen entwined with her. It is her son, Cupid. The undeniable sexuality
of their embrace has long been debated over as scandalous behavior. Rather than channeling the act of
incest in itself, Bronzino exploits these two as symbols for the personification of male and female
sexuality. Whichever case it may be, the erotic narrative of the painting becomes instantly clear.
Venus, determined to get Cupid s arrow submits to dire endeavors when Cupid refuses and tries to
distract him by seducing him while she takes the arrow from him. Venus and Cupid are painted

In fact, most vampires are portrayed as both beast and man, struggling to retain their humanity as the
lust for blood seems to never diminish and eternal as they are, their inner conflict spans to infinity.
This duplicity is highly reminiscent of the paradoxical nature of the trickster archetype. Tricksters

Traditional scholarship differentiates any tangible entity that fulfills the trickster criteria as clown.
Trickster research is confusing at this point because it calls tricksters mythic entities found in folklore
and in legends. Therefore, a trickster is more than just an idea; it may also be a mythic creature. (Kim
ix) For the purposes of this essay I will refer to the trickster first as an idea, as a set of elements and
then exemplify these characteristics using mythic entities as a form of illustration.
Tricksters are usually associated with a host of negative elements such as stubbornness, chicanery,
duplicity, cruelty, greed, gluttony, and avarice; (Musinsky) although their unifying elements are
selfishness, egoism and self centeredness. As mentioned before tricksters are amoral, or, to use a
Nietzsche s phrase: beyond good and evil. According to Radini, a well known trickster scholar, the
trickster possesses no values, moral or social, is at the mercy of his passions and appetites, yet through
his actions all values come into being. (xxiii) Almost all tricksters are megalomaniacs, a trait that is
not necessarily negative, according to the aforementioned Nietschean view of the world. Every living
thing seeks to discharge its strength life itself is will to power. This innate characteristic of life is of
absolute value and acceptance of the will to power in all its sublime manifestations, both beautiful and

The Struggles Of Women s Equality
Historically, women had to fight for their rights to vote and the right to gain economic or personal
independence like men. Women have been subjected to unequal treatment and discrimination
regardless of their race, culture or socioeconomic status. From birth boys and girls, male and female
are expected by society to play certain roles based on gender, religions and other beliefs. Gender
stereotypes have enforced the difference between men and women, it labels women as weak,
submissive, they should be taking care of the household etc. Hence, most women lose opportunities
because they are perceived as vulnerable and unable to participate in certain activities. The struggles
of women s equality started in the 1800s where women in the United States wanted equal rights to
vote and have equal job opportunity like men. It is not right for one gender to be superior over the
other. Hence, women such as Susan B. Anthony who drafted The Declaration of Sentiments and
Resolutions demanded equality for women to be educated and gain employment. Cady Stanton along
with Susan Anthony formed the National Woman Suffrage Association, Lucy Stone and Henry
Blackwell amongst others formed the American Women Suffrage Association demanding voting rights
for women. The declaration of independence states that, all men are created equal and has the right to
life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (The Declaraton of Independence, 1776). With all the efforts

Game Theory, Deal or No Deal
From the show s introduction in December 2005, NBC has had tremendous success with the game
show Deal or No Deal. The game show, which was created in the Netherlands, pits acontestant against
the mysterious banker. The contestant is trying for the case with $1 million, while the banker s stated
goal is to get the contestant to go home with as little money as possible while also trying to keep the
game going for as long as possible. Deal or No Deal is a unique game show in that it takes virtually no
skill on the part of the contestant. As long as the contestant can count to 26 (the number of cases), he
can play the game. But this lack of skill requirement allows us, as economists, to study how people

In other words, there is a greater risk involved with continuing when the remaining cases are very far
apart than when they are close together. Two sets of cases can have the same expected value, yet have
much different risk levels associated with not taking the deal. A large standard deviation will mean
that there is more risk of getting a substantially lower pay out than if there is a small standard
deviation. Take, for example, a set of cases with $100,000 and $200,000 and another set with $0.01
and 300,000. These two sets of cases have almost the same expected value ($150,000), but the deal is
much more enticing for the second group because of the much higher standard deviation. How a
person interprets and handles the risk associated with the standard deviation depends on how much
they like risk. Someone who is risk averse will be less willing to play on when facing a case set with a
high standard deviation than someone who is risk seeking. The contestant s risk tolerance can be

Analyzing Winslow Homer s The Gulf Stream
Introduction
Winslow Homer, The Gulf Stream, 1899, Oil Painting Canvas, 28 1/8inches x 49 1/8inches The Gulf
Stream painting by Winslow Homer depicts what life is like for some fishermen in the ocean. What we
see fishermen bring from their long expeditions are ocean creatures of different sizes and shapes.
Winslow in this painting is telling the story of a fisherman who went fishing but, in his expedition, he
was the main target for the sharks, the fish for the sharks. In this painting, the fisherman who is lying
on the boat is shown to have lost hope and believe the worst is yet to come hence, he looked to have

Ruby Moon By Matt Cameron
Ruby Moon by Matt Cameron
The Artslink Queensland production of Ruby Moon by Matt Cameron can be described as an example
of the Australian Gothic dramatic style. Ruby Moon, set in picture perfect Flaming Tree Grove, is
about the tragic dilemma of a couple, Ray and Sylvie, trying to cope with the earlier disappearance of
their young daughter, Ruby, while on the way to visit her grandmother at the end of the cul de sac
(Queensland Education, 2014).
Matt Cameron s, Ruby Moon, is an award winning contemporary Australian playwright and
screenwriter based in Melbourne which depicts a uniquely Australian landscape; employing the
conventions of the Australian Gothic Theatrical style (Queensland Theatre Company, 2009). In the
production of Ruby Moon, the stage setting creates dramatic meaning and purpose. Ruby Moon is set
in an Australian suburban town in picture perfect Flaming Tree Grove where Ray and Sylvie s
daughter, Ruby, disappears on her way to visit her grandma at the end of the cul de sac (HCS, 2014).
The intimacy and secrecy of the Flaming Tree Grove community and its lack of safety adds to the
supernatural and paranormal intrusions of Australian Gothic Theatre. The Ruby Moon production was
fuelled and inspired by fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Hansel and Gretel,
and Alice in Wonderland, and also newspaper headings and stories about families and their missing
children scattered around the world. Matt Cameron s purpose of the production

Cost Of Globalization Essay
There was a time when most regions were economically self sufficient. Locally produced foods, fuel,
and raw materials were processed for local consumption. Trade between different regions was very
limited. Today, the economies of most countries are so interconnected that they form part of a single,
interdependent global economy. Globalization has been defined as the process of international
integrating arising from the interchange of world views, products, ideas, and other aspects of culture.
With this meaning, perspectives, social norms, and business conducts are being exchanged across
cultures. It has changed the world in more ways than we can imagine. The most profound impact of
globalization is on the economy in nearly all markets. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These distinct systems would also prevent global financial crises from happening as the systems
would not be dependent on each other. As time progressed, so did the policies and practices of free
trade. Citizens felt that as long as financial systems were separate, global free trade was safe. Soon,
the barricades to open, flowing capital began to disappear and citizens forgot the lessons of the past
and became more comfortable with global commerce exchange. Some drivers of globalization are
economic policies, political changes and technological innovations.
Indeed, the advancement of science and technologies has greatly reduced the cost of transportation
and communication, making economic globalization possible. Today s ocean shipping cost is only a
half of that in the year 1930, the current airfreight 1/6, and telecommunication cost 1%. The price
level of computers in 1990 was only about 1/125 of that in 1960, and this price level in 1998 reduced
again by about 80%. These kinds of technological advancements greatly reduce the cost of
international trade and investment, thus making it possible to organize and coordinate global
production. At the forefront of globalization are multinational corporations (MNC); these corporations
have become the main carriers of economic globalization. They are globally organizing production
and allocating resources to insure profit maximization. The technological advancement at almost

Taking a Look at Government Surveillance
Government Surveillance
Government Surveillance, a way that the government says that will keep you safe from foreign
dangers like terrorist attacks, espionage, and perhaps a international war. However you have to

Government surveillance, defined by dictionary.com as a noun that states
Close observation or supervision maintained over a person, group, etc, especially one in custody or
under suspicion (Merriam webster.com) the word was also taken from the French word surveiller that
means to watch over and was adopted and changed as the English word surveillance.
Government surveillance has been with us ever since the start of groups, dynasties, government and

Alienation As The Reason For Berenger s Resistance
Differing from Kafka, Ionesco uses the theme of alienation as the reason for Berenger s resistance, in
Rhinoceros. Alcoholism is a major cause of his alienation, in Act Three, Berenger considers alcohol as
the reason for his isolation and subsequent inability to transform. When conversing with Dudard, he
says [A]lcohol is good for epidemics. It immunizes you ... Jean never touched alcohol. He just
pretended to. Maybe that s why he... perhaps that explains his attitude (Ionesco 1960: 76). This
insinuates that Berenger understands why he does not transform into rhinoceros, identifying his own
alienation. Only his drinking serves to inoculate him from this epidemic and from the side effect of
this epidemic, the powerful loneliness inherent in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ionesco blamed the world around him for giving him nightmares, thus suggesting that his fiction was
inspired by reality. He went on to say that the very act of denouncing the nightmare may free the
world of them (Lupas 2014: 87). Berenger attempts to actively resist the nightmare of transforming,
but fails, leaving him alone in a world of rhinoceros. Thus, Ionesco represents the rhinoceros as
history s ultimate nightmare.
The relationship between Berenger and Jean is also important in highlighting the protagonist s
alienation. In the opening of the play, Berenger is described as unshaven and hatless, with unkempt
hair and creased clothes; everything about him indicates negligence (Ionesco 1960: 4). He is compared
to the character of Jean, who arrives very fastidiously dressed: brown suit, red tie, stiff collar, brown
hat (4). Jean s appearance sets him as a stereotypical man of the time, contrasting with Berenger, who
is an untidy, alcoholic that cannot conform to social expectations. From the outset we find little in
Berenger s life that would appear to be worth defending (Danner 1979: 209). The absence of hope in
Berenger, at the beginning, immediately alienates him from the rest of the characters. Ionesco s
emphasis on work as a duty to society runs throughout the play. Berenger is consistently late for work
at a publisher s shop. He resists the conformity of punching a time clock (Davies 2002: 646). Berenger
s apathy towards work is what makes him

This act is stating that it is apart of the Department of Interior; part of the executive branch of the U.S.
government. This was a law created by the Congress that established the highest order of legal
authority over national parks. A policy where a group of people came together in 1916 and decided to
make a law/policy to set aside special and unique land so it wouldn t be used for any franchise
purposes. Its a way of conserving the scenery or the natural or historic objects in any such park

a ruthless murderer are both extremely good examples of southern gothic story. While both of these
great writers use southern gothic style they both still use it to demonstrate very different aspects of
southern culture. By comparing and contrasting these two great southern gothic style writers you will

by using a few different techniques. I will focus more on the how the works achieve their effect, their
insight into a human problem, their presentation of emotion and consciousness, and their giving the
reader pleasure.
The single most important aspect that defines southern gothic writing is the use of macabre, or
malformed, events. These distinguished events are easy identified in both of these short stories.
Faulkner s story, A Rose for Emily, was told

Misconceptions Of Golf
How many of you have ever tried to play corn hole? Now make the bean bag about a third of that size,
hard, and also make the hole, your target about half of the size it was. Now instead of being 27 feet
from the target, go back about 300 yards and hit it with a stick, now you have golf.
Golf originated in Scotland but there s really no known year because there s always been sticks, holes
in the ground, rocks, and boredom. The PGA was founded October 10th, 1916 and ever since then it s
a common misconception that the word golf is an acronym for Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden.
However, this is far from the truth and the ladies got their own tour in 1950. Another well known
event in golf is the Masters which first took place in 1934. Famous

Powell, 18 Lessons in Leadership General Powell highlights 18 lessons learned in leadership that are applied to successful companies, and how they are applied to leadership in his presentation to the Outreach Program, and the Sears Corporate Headquarters. These approaches can be applied not only in business but life in general. I will highlight three of the lessons that have impacted my career in the military Lesson 7 Too often in business as well as the military, If it ain t broke, don t fix it (Powell, C #7). Too often the command as well as enlisted soldiers will use this analogy to continue to do what they have always done and fight change. Also this leads to allowing small details to be overlooked because it s been allowed before, these small details, such as production schedules become larger details. These small little details will cause larger details to be overlooked in the future. This culture will foster reactivity instead of promoting proactivity (Powell, C #7). This type of culture is a struggle for leaders to change in the National Guard because of the hometown mentality, all though we strive to keep the since of community in our units as leaders we have to be the supporters of change. In this unit we study how authors creates the individual characters identity. Focusing on Young man on sixth avenue , The metamorphosis , and Homage to my Hips we will begin to further our understanding of the creation of identities in text. Young man on sixth avenue tells the story of a man as he goes throughout the different stages of his life. In this short story the individual creates his own persona by using different adjectives or diction to describe his younger self. He spends a great deal of time discussing ... Gregor Samsa is another example of how the author uses specific diction to describe the character, allowing us to characterize the subject. Throughout the different phases of this story we begin to view him differently. For instance when the author inputs this small flashback into the story On the wall directly opposite hung a photograph of Gregor from his army days in a lieutenant s uniform, his hand on his sword, a carefree smile on his lips, demanding respect for his bearing and rank . This piece of text is very important because it allows us to identify him as a respectable member of society and not the slimy scumbag (insect) that he is first viewed as in the story. We as readers sympathize with him for how he is treated by his family; developing a level of respect for him. Seeing beneath the fact that he is a bug at the moment. We view his as being a decent guy. Especially with how he sacrifices his life in order to help his family despite how they treated him. These different ways that he interacted with the people in the story allow him to create the innocent persona that he was looking for. Homage to my hips shows us different side of the same coin in essence. On one side we have a very strong and confident woman while on the other hand we have a slightly insecure woman. • 6. How Surface Area Affects the Buoyancy of Wood Essay example Introduction: The upward force on an object that is in water that allows it to float is called buoyancy. The buoyant force is always equal to the weight of the water displaced by the object in the water. This force was discovered by Archimedes, who was in his bathtub when he wondered why objects seemed lighter when he held them under the water. He found out that if an object is lighter than the weight of the water it displaces, it will float, but if it is heavier, it will sink. The force of buoyancy is important in many different areas, and especially in the making of ships. The surface area that is touching the water of the ship is very large, due to the shape of the hull, and that, beside the density of the ship, is what keeps the ship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Likewise, the piece of wood with the surface area of 153cm² is the most buoyant, with a buoyancy of 0.606, because it has the most area to receive upward force upon. Problems and Improvements: A difficulty I encountered during this experiment was taking the measurements of newtons in the water. This was because it was hard to find the right place to put the spring balance. It could not be holding the piece of wood up completely, but it couldn t be not supporting it at all both of these things would have created inaccurate results. However, I overcame this by spending time getting this balance right for each measurement, so I could collect the most accurate results as possible. There could still be minor inaccuracies in these results because of this problem; however a trend is still easily recognised in the results, so minor inaccuracies are only a small problem. This experiment could be improved by measuring the density of each of the pieces of wood as well as the surface area. Density, as well as surface area, also affects buoyancy, so the most accurate results would be gained by integrating density as a factor of this experiment. Conclusion: The results of this experiment did support my hypothesis, and confirm that for a constant mass, the larger the surface area of the piece of wood, the more buoyant it is. Bibliography: ... There s an estimate of 120 million Internet users in the United States, surfing the web daily. That is why the web has evolved into a more accessible and user friendly place where a person is able to search for the information they want. Therefore, it is crucial for a website to maintain its accessibility and user friendly characteristic by keeping a well designed web page, easy navigations through the site, clear printed words on the page with good color contrast, etc. Furthermore, in order to receive feedbacks from the users/readers, the website would require a feedback system and user s support to allow the users to express their opinions of the website which is very valuable in order to improve the web page. A great example of a website which contains a lot of these characteristics is CollegeAtlas.com. First, the website has tons of information regarding Colleges, which is already helpful towards students, as the largest group of people who uses the internet. • 8. Horror And Vampires The Popularity of Horror/Vampires Why do people love the feeling of getting scared? Is it because our palms become more sweaty? Skin temperature drops? Or is it the more fear people experience, the more they claim to enjoy themselves? Horror is characterized as an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust. Yet it makes no sense how people love feeling this way. In today s society, we choose our form of entertainment because we want it to affect us. Dr. Goldstein from the University of Utrecht states that people have the ability to pay attention as much or as little as they care to in order to control what effect it has on them, emotionally and otherwise. People nowadays are mainly attracted to vampires by the qualities they represent. The media has portrayed vampires as: loners, smart, cool looking, fearless, powerful, bad boy, fun individuals. Although these qualities are fairly appealing, we have been brainwashed into thinking that these qualities make a vampire attractive. In Edgar Allen Poe s short story Ligeia, the narrator throughout the whole story bragged about how beautiful his deceased wife Ligeia is. The narrator states that Ligeia s beauty passed through my spirit, there dwelling as a shrine (Poe 3). Ligeia s beauty mesmerized the narrator to the point where he was infatuated by her beauty. Jonathan Harker also experiences compelling sexual desires in Bram s Stroker s Dracula. Jonathan stated that There was something about them that made me uneasy, some longing and at the same time some deadly fear. I felt in my heart a wicked, burning desire that they would kiss me with those red lips. It is not good to note this down, lest some day it should meet Mina s eyes and cause her pain; but it is the truth (Stroker 29). Vampires used their romantic charm and tricks to retrieve most of their victims. Johann Wolfgang s The Bride of Corinth, illustrated an example of how falling in love with a vampire could lead to possible consequences. In The Bride of Corinth, the youngman had sex with the vampire. Towards the end he is killed as she purposely drinks his blood, the vampire states Still to love the bridegroom I have lost, and the life blood of his heart to drink (Wolfgang 5). • 9. Herp Protein Synthesis Viruses have also developed methods to prevent the activity of the transporter associated with antigen processing, TAP. The TAP complex consists of two protein subunits; TAP1 and TAP2, and is an ATP dependant peptide transporter essential for the transport of peptides to the ER and binding of the peptides to MHC class I molecules [11]. Various herpesviruses interfere with antigen presentation through the blocking the activity of TAP. The Herpes simplex virus type I (HSV 1) encodes the protein ICP47, which competes with peptides in the cytoplasm to bind to TAP. As a result fewer viral peptides are transported to the ER for loading onto MHC I molecules. This ICP47 protein consists of 88 amino acid residues, out of which residues 3 34 act as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Bovine herpsvirus 1 (BoHV 1) produces the protein UL49.5, which also interferes with the transport of peptides via TAP [13]. The BoHV 1 UL49.5 interacts with the TAP core particle, through its transmembrane domain and ER luminal domain, and prevents rearrangements in the structure of TAP. These rearrangements typically occur subsequent to the binding of antigenic peptides and ATP. Such rearrangements influence the movement of TAP, as during peptide transport the transporter molecules move slower than those not bound to peptides. However, the binding of UL49.5 hinders such changes in TAP mobility by preventing structural rearrangements, which are essential for the translocation of peptides. BoHV 1 UL49.5 also interrupts peptide transport through promoting the degradation of the TAP1 and TAP2 subunits. This is achieved by the C terminal cytoplasmic tail of UL49.5 which connects the TAP and UL49.5 complex to ubiquitin, thereby targeting it for proteasome mediated degradation [12, 13]. This transporter is also a key target for other viral evasion proteins (Table ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparisons can include the imagery, copy, and the campaign, these are up to debate for the viewer, to one an advertisement can be provocative, but to another the advertisement can simply be a form of bandwagon. Calvin Klein and Versace have two internet advertisements that I believe them to both be provocative in their own special ways, but share a form of bandwagon. Analysis Of Venus Cupid Folly And Time Also known by the titles Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time and A Triumph of Venus , this painting was on purpose designed as a complex, erotic allegory that includes an extent of iconographic symbols from the ancient world of mythology. It was a present from Cosimo de Medici to King Francis I of France. Being rich and vivid in symbolism relating to the constituting ideas of the High Renaissance, the painting gives Bronzino the opportunity to establish his maestro figure painting and portrait art. Through personification of qualities and varying contrast and brightness, Bronzino is able to justify that personal gains outweigh anything and everything that is moral. The picture symbolizes the aftermath of incestuous actions. Venus is evidently present at the center of the painting, recognizable by the golden apple in her left hand from the Greek myth The Judgement of Paris. A robust adolescent male figure with wings can be seen entwined with her. It is her son, Cupid. The undeniable sexuality of their embrace has long been debated over as scandalous behavior. Rather than channeling the act of incest in itself, Bronzino exploits these two as symbols for the personification of male and female sexuality. Ionesco blamed the world around him for giving him nightmares, thus suggesting that his fiction was inspired by reality. Berenger attempts to actively resist the nightmare of transforming, but fails, leaving him alone in a world of rhinoceros. Thus, Ionesco represents the rhinoceros as history s ultimate nightmare. The relationship between Berenger and Jean is also important in highlighting the protagonist s alienation. In the opening of the play, Berenger is described as unshaven and hatless, with unkempt hair and creased clothes; everything about him indicates negligence (Ionesco 1960: 4). He is compared to the character of Jean, who arrives very fastidiously dressed: brown suit, red tie, stiff collar, brown hat (4). Jean s appearance sets him as a stereotypical man of the time, contrasting with Berenger, who is an untidy, alcoholic that cannot conform to social expectations. From the outset we find little in Berenger s life that would appear to be worth defending (Danner 1979: 209). The absence of hope in Berenger, at the beginning, immediately alienates him from the rest of the characters. Ionesco s emphasis on work as a duty to society runs throughout the play.
