J. D. Salinger Influences
20th Century American novelist and short story writer, J.D. Salinger, wrote many stories, most of
which have been heavily influenced by his time spent in World War II. Arguably Salinger s most
popular novel, The Catcher in the Rye, was carried into battle with him and has distinct influences of
Salinger s experiences within it. Salinger was discharged from the army in 1945 (French xiv). and
because of his experiences in the war, books like The Catcher in the Rye and many others have a much
darker tone and plot than the stories written before his time in war. Before the war, Salinger mostly
wrote short stories that lacked fighting sequences and any type of violence. After the war, Salinger s
writing became harsher and more vicious. The first of Salinger s works to feature a combat scene was
a short story called The Magic Foxhole and it described the battle of Normandy, something that
Salinger experienced but didn t discuss in his personal life (Slawenski). Salinger spent a considerable
amount of time writing The Catcher in the Rye. The novel started out as fragments of characters
written into other short stories and novels, and over time it developed into ... Show more content on

Before he was a soldier, Salinger could only write short stories that never attracted fame. After the
war, Salinger wrote novels that became famous for their thought provoking topics and controversial
ideas (French 8). Salinger used this new voice to stir the feelings of readers. His books made the
readers think about war and violence in a different way. The author of J.D. Salinger and War described
this new way of thinking when he or she wrote We are still not willing to face the consequences of
war. They, our veterans, have no choice. (J.D. Salinger and War.). This quote shows the involuntary
effects that the soldiers endure after they serve. Though, challenging to experience, the war efforts of
J.D. Salinger greatly impacted his writing for the

To What Extent Does the Impact of World War I Explain the...
To what extent does the impact of World War I explain the outbreak of the two revolutions in 1917 ?
To a certain extent, the First World War was a major contributing factor to the two revolutions that
took place in 1917, the February and October Revolution. The war worsened the issues that already
existed in Russia and also highlighted the lack of leadership shown by the Tsar and the Provisional
Government set up after the February Revolution and also the Tsars military command over the army
during the war. However, World War One was not the only reason for the revolutions taking place and
acted as a tipping factor from the already undergoing social, political and economical problems
plaguing Russia which led to the fall of the Tsar and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The provisional government tried to regain the support of the army and the Russian public by making
the army launch the June offensive, with the July offensive in the first two weeks being able to exploit
the poor morale of the Austrian Army were then pushed back because of soldiers refusing to obey
order thus overriding the early success. After the Germans counter attacked leaving thousands of
soldiers deserted the army suffered a collapse. Not only did this show how poorly the Russian army
was organised, equipped and mentally able to win the war but it also showed the Provisional
Governments disregard of listening to the publics cries to stop the war.
During the first revolution the political issues were a large factor for it to happen. With the Tsar
leaving the country to command the army, the Tsarina was left in charge. This was a poor decision at
first because the Tsarina was German and many people saw her as either a spy for Germany or having
split allegiances so would make poor decisions and not consider what was best for Russia. The
government became very unstable with the Tsarina in charge as she continually kept changing the
ministers especially if they did not want to make decisions directed by the Man of God . On top of this
the Tsarina took advice from a peasant called Rasputin, who was first Tsars Nicholas II s sons doctor
to try and cure his haemophilia. Rasputin was a advisor to the Tsarina and many speculated

My Creation Of A Soundtrack For Octavia E. Butler s...
Soundtracks to films often strive to represent the themes and feeling of the film, and direct the
audience towards particular emotions. A good soundtrack not only allows for the listener to understand
the film better, but it should also bring to mind particular scenes, images, or characters. Soundtracks
for books can do the same. In my creation of a soundtrack for Octavia E. Butler s Parable of the
Sower, I strove to encompass Lauren s journey throughout the novel and the various emotions that she
experiences. Since Lauren is reflecting on her experiences, her journey becomes central to how the
audience feels and experiences the emotional aspects of the book. The songs not only represent
Lauren, but also the entire feel and theme of the text. The songs follow along with Lauren, with her
despair, death, and the need for survival. As I scoured through song after song, I tried to connect each
song choice with a particular moment in Lauren s story and the hopelessness of a dystopian future
Butler warns her audience about. The first track is Things We Lost in the Fire by the band Bastille, and
is one of the more literal song selections about the event that triggers the rest of the events in the story
to occur: the death of her father, the pyros, the destruction of her community. The song is literally
about things that burn up and leave, never to be seen again. Fire plays a key role in the fear aspect of
the book; fire is synonymous with chaos. Not only does the song

Formal Mathematical Methods And Hardware Systems
Literature Review Formal mathematical methods are system designs that utilize specific rigorous
mathematical models in the production of software and hardware systems. The methods are unique in
comparison with other methods for they utilize mathematical proof as a complement to system testing
so as to ensure a perfect behavior. A formal approach to system designs ensures safety due to the
complicated nature of systems. The use of formal verification schemes creates the difference between
formal methods and other design systems. Hence, the primary principles of the system must be proven
to be right before they are adopted. Extensive testing has been used for long in traditional system
designs to ascertain behavior, but only finite conclusions are achieved. Testing only reveals situations
where a system would not fail, but the behavior outside the testing scenario is not accounted for. If the
result is positive after testing the theorem, then it remains true. An error in design is impossible to fix
via formal verification but could help in identification of errors in reasoning which would otherwise
be left unverified. The knowledge of mathematics results from proofs that consist of valid and certain
conclusions. Verification of mathematical statements is not through experiments or social agreements
but logical deductions from basic assumptions. The method assures that the knowledge has universal
application since mapping a mathematical statement into physical reality holds

Symphonic Wind Band Concert Report
On Friday, February 12, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., the Division of Music at Bob Jones University presented
the Symphonic Wind Band and performed five pieces. The performance in Stratton Hall at Bob Jones
University was a highlight of the European Travelogue, directed by Dan Turner. The program included
A Moorside Suite by Gustav Holst; Three Revolutionary Marches by Bedrich Smetana; Spring:
Overture for Wind Orchestra by Johan de Meij; Galop, from Genevieve de Brabant by Jacques
Offenbach; Ile de France from Suite Francaise by Darius Milhaud; and Danceries by Kenneth
Hesketh. Each piece was concluded with eager applause and praise.
The concert opened with A Moorside Suite from England; it began quietly accompanied by the
clarinet and saxophone. The tempo started out slowly, then shifted to fast and back again to slow,
throughout the entire piece. There was an appearance of a few soloists including the oboe, clarinet,
and saxophone. This movement ended with the entire orchestra leading to a final chorale that builds to
a fortissimo climax.
The next movement of the concert from Czechoslovakia, Three Revolutionary Marches, began
dramatic with leaps and high range climaxes. The music of this piece perfectly portrays the ... Show

I especially liked, Spring: Overture for Wind Orchestra, because of the rapid and dance like scene. In
addition, I was impressed with the orchestra s ability to perform so favorably with the brilliant soprano
soloist. My least favorite performance of the evening was Danceries. The beginning was enjoyable but
it quickly shifted to excessive refrains and distorted structure of instruments. After hearing these
independent pieces I was able to comprehend and respect the talent of the performers of Bob Jones
University s music division. Overall, the musicians performed an excellent concert and left a lasting

Cesar Chavez Influence On Migrant Workers
Labor unions have been instrumental in the lives of workers throughout American history, and have
led to important advances in the American workforce. Throughout history there have been patterns of
exploitation of immigrant workers by businesses in order to increase profits; the Mexican migrant
workers of southern California are the most recent historical group to fall into this pattern of
exploitation mostly from their lack of organization. Cesar E. Chavez was a great organizer and leader
of the United Farm Workers labor union. Robert Kennedy referred to him as one of the heroic figures
of our time. Chavez used his life experiences in order to better the lives of many migrant workers in
America. Key points in Chavez s life that had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chavez wanted to help the community that he came from, as well as others like it. The migrant worker
community became his main focus, this resulted his creation of the UFW in 1962 (Chavez
Foundation). His earlier life as a migrant worker would be a strong influence for attaining better
working conditions for those workers. Early in Chavez s life, he was exposed to the hardships of
migrant working. When Chavez was 10 his family was forced from their home in Yuma, Arizona
because of back taxes and because of the depression, his family couldn t pay the payments (Castillo
and Garcia, 7). Chavez began migrant work when he was 14, and the injustices had a memorable
effect. Migrant workers were often exploited because of their lack of organization in a uniform union
group, something that Chavez would eventually change. In future years the UFW would give migrant
workers a voice in the conditions under which they were living and working. Strikes, boycotts, and
other nonviolent protests were essential to the UFW s ability to attain advancements in the Mexican
American workplace. Though strikes previous to 1964 were often unsuccessful because of the Bracero
program that was implemented by both the United States and Mexican governments. Farm owners
encouraged this program because of labor shortages during wartime, but by the 1950 s the Bracero
workers were being used to undercut wages and break strikes by the migrant workers. This caused

Importance of Not Being Late Essay
Importance of not being late. In the following paper I will be discussing what series of actions brought
me to write this paper, the army regulations surrounding said actions, the possible effects these actions
might have on the accomplishment of the mission, the possible affects on your career, and how to
discourage and possibly stop such things from ever happening soon or ever again. The reason I am
being subject to this time consuming, uninspired, and rather lackluster writing assignment is because I
failed to be at the correct place of duty at the time appointed to me by my superiors. The day before

If you are charged and found guilty under these articles you can be facing a multitude of outcomes
none of which one would strife for. The commanding officer could be as lenient as letting you go with
a stern yet fair warning and talking, you may find yourself picking up trash after work and during the
weekends for anything between the parameters of seven to forty five days of extra duty. You may also
suffer from the economical side of the house because they may decide to go ahead and cut your
monthly pay in half for two whole months back to back. Last of the outcomes named here but the one
that I personally believe to be the worst is the loss of rank. The can take one or all of the them
depending on the severity of the cause being presented to the commanding officer. Rank is the thing
that takes the most time to achieve the first time around coming up the ranks, to lose it after you have
it makes it harder for you to be seeing as a professional and a soldier that is worth pushing forward to
achieve to the next step in his career. Next we will discuss in this paper the impact such actions can

direct impact it can have on the people you work closely with. In our job

Cowans 2 NEWTONS LAWS OF MOTION Soccer is an International sport played all over the world.
Soccer consist of two teams trying to score a soccer ball into a goal on the opposing team s side of the
field without using their arms or hands. This sport is straightforward and simple, but relates to physics
in many ways. The basic movement of kicking a soccer ball requires force, the release of kinetic
energy, acceleration etc. I will be discussing the importance of Physics in soccer and how it impacts
the overall game. In the sport Soccer the players are kicking the soccer ball up and down the field.
When the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the ball has a small amount of mass, than you require less force. Many soccer players use these
equations to their advantage when they start to kick the ball. If they know how much force they need
to apply it gives them more insight than the other team and gives them a better opportunity to score.
Cowans 3
Newton s Last Law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This
means when you kick a soccer ball it s suppose to come back to you with the equal amount of
strength. This is actually true, but we aren t aware of this because our leg has a greater mass, than
soccer ball. When we apply force to the ball the same amount does come back, but because of the
unbalanced masses, we don t fill the push back, and this also means we have a greater Inertia because
of our leg s resistance. Although kick the ball is very important in soccer, the soccer ball has a very
important part in Physics and the game of soccer. When the player kicks the ball they transfer their
momentum into the soccer ball. Momentum is the velocity of an object times it s mass. Once your
momentum of the ball you can control it by using your feet. This can be demonstrated when someone
passes you the ball and your feet to stop or slow down the momentum in the ball. You are controlling
the momentum. THE MAGNUS EFFECT Everything above is all because of the Magnus Effect. The

The Nuclear Arms Race During The Cold War
The Cold War, basically a gigantic nuclear arms race, was built on suspicion and tension between the
two major power brokers after World War II: The United States and the USSR. Speculation of what
perpetuated it has many veins; however, three major ideologies contributed. Fear of communism
become an international reality as the main governing polity, making an enemy out of the USSR.
Second is the Russian response to invasion across their borders in the past wars, and thus fear drove
them to it. The USA and the USSR have different political cultures and interests which intensified fear
of dangerous conflict and confrontations a reality. As one can see, these ideologies have a very real
threat in common, worse than any arms race... fear. Once

The Ethical Considerations When Collecting The Data
The ethical considerations when collecting the data, is for the children or young people participating
not to be subject to harm in any way. The questions and the observations need to be done in a
respectful way and their dignity should be prioritised. Carrying out this type of research consist of full
consent from the stakeholders and the children. The children s protection of privacy has to be ensured
at all times. When analysing the data there needs to be an adequate level of confidentiality of the
research data. There needs to be anonymity for the individuals and aware they can withdraw consent
at any time. All the professionals participating need to be respected. Finally, all communication should
be done with honestly and any misleading information should be avoided.
Similarly, the ethical issues identified is the researcher needs to work alongside vulnerable children
who may be reluctant to talk or build relationships. Therefore, information may not be given
truthfully, so building a rapport is vital when collecting data. Also, the children and young people may
disclose personal experiences or crime they have done and it s the researcher s role to protect the
children and consider what is relevant to the research question.
Adapting the mixed method approach, will take into consideration the children and young people s
ages and sensitivity to personal issues. The questionnaires and surveys will be aimed at the 11 16 year

ABSTRACT
The Brassica rapa is a rapid growing plant that has a standard form and a mutant rosette form. Relative
to normal plants, the rosette form is shorter and takes longer to flower. The mode of inheritance of the
rosette gene was tested by crossing two true breeding plants, one of each form. The F1 generation was
then cross pollinated to produce an F2 generation. The phenotypes of each generation were recorded
and a chi square test was performed. The F1 offspring were almost entirely standard form, and the F2
followed the Mendelian ratio of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After a week, the phenotypes of the plants were recorded in Table 2. The strongest plant in each cell
was left in the quad, and the others were removed in order to thin the plants.
Pollinating Flowers The plants were continually monitored and watered when needed. At
approximately two weeks from the day the seeds were planted, several flowers were open on the
plants. The plants were then cross pollinated using a pollinating wand. The pollen from one plant was
transferred to another, using approximately eight flowers. This was done three different days with one
day in between. After the third pollination, the unopened buds were removed. The plants were kept
watered, and the new buds and shoots were removed for the next 14 days.
Harvesting Seeds Once 14 days had passed from the day of the third pollination, the quad was
removed from the watering tray and left to dry for a week. Then, the dry seed pods were removed and
cracked open so that the seeds could be collected.
Germinating Seeds A piece of filter paper was moistened and then placed in a petri dish, and any
excess water was poured off. The harvested seeds were then placed in neat rows on the upper two
thirds of the filter paper. The petri dish was then tilted on end in a water reservoir containing
approximately two centimeters of water. The reservoir and dish were then placed under the fluorescent
light to germinate for 48 hours. After the 48 hours, the

Taking a Look at Chinese Culture
Those traditions have passed on to my family and society. According to Jandt (2003), Confucian
philosophy, which believes in harmony in society through respect to age and social hierarchy, affects
Chinese strongly. Confucianism has various effects on Chinese communication. As a Chinese, we
value Filial Piety and belong to collectivism. I may not say what I really want to mean when I think it
would hurt others. Foreigners such as Americans may feel surprised that HongKongers pay attention
to family so much. If Americans are asked to take a gap year in which be travelling around and their
parents disagree, most of them won t cancel the trip. For me, I would give up the trip honestly and this
may be a main difference between our values towards family. I like the culture I grew up in and the
tradition my family has. Respecting elders is what should be appreciated. I would like my generation
to keep the culture too; however, we can learn the advantages of other cultures. Individualism allows
us to fulfill obligations to self and to be independent. HongKongers can take balance between two
cultures and get improvement for our own.
Chinese is in high context culture and foreigners usually feel confused when I communicate with
them. In communication of Chinese, many things are left unsaid. We let the culture explain so that few
words can communicate a complex message. Although it is effective to in group, there are difficulties
in the communication with foreigners. During the

Argumentative Essay On Maternity Leave
While doing some research, I have learned that maternity leave has become quite an issue. In Virginia,
we do not have a state law that specifically requires employers to offer pregnancy leave. Although, we
do have the Human Rights Act that must provide some leave for those women who are disabled by
pregnancy. Being disabled by pregnancy means that you can no longer do certain activities so that the
mother can deliver safely and care for the newborn. In America, the U.S. has a policy, The Family and
Medical leave Act of 1993. It is mandating 12 weeks of unpaid leave annually. Unfortunately, only
four states have paid maternity leave. The four states are California, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and
Rhode Island. California and New Jersey gives you 6 weeks and Rhode Island gives you only 4
weeks. Research has shown that women in the United States are more likely to drop out of work force
voluntarily due to lack of time with the infant and stress. After just looking at maternity leave in
America, I decided to branch out and do other countries. I wanted to compare the difference between
the two. Upon doing some research I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Spectroscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy And Spectroscopy
Spectroscopy is a broad field of science that includes Raman Spectroscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy,
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Optical Spectroscopy and several other techniques.
Although the techniques are distinct, spectroscopy essentially is how energy and matter interact with
one another. Matter exhibits electromagnetic radiation that consists of wavelike properties. Ultimately,
this electromagnetic radiation can assist in speculating the structure of a molecule. Infrared
Spectroscopy for instance, can aid in identifying the functional groups present, but cannot determine
their precise location. When Infrared light is beamed at a molecule it causes the molecule to vibrate.

Integrals indicate how many hydrogen protons there are in the set being measured. An integration of
two for example, signifies that there are two hydrogen protons present. The integration can also aid in
distinguishing whether atoms are in the same environment. Finally, data provided from NMR
designates what is defined as multiplicity or the splitting pattern; the number of protons on atoms
adjacent to the one whose signal is being measured. If a proton (or a set of magnetically equivalent
nuclei) has n neighbors of magnetically equivalent protons. Then the equation n+1 can be applied,
where n stands for neighboring protons.
With the data given from the DEPT 125 and the NMR scans on both H and C, we should be able to
evaluate the structure of the sample. The samples were given with their molecular formula. Since the
sample is also an alcohol, there is at least one hydrogen bonded to an oxygen. For the DEPT 35,
negative peaks indicate the presence and location of a CH2 bond. Identifying a CH2 group in the
DEPT 35 will assist in speculating the structure of the alcohol by narrowing down the possibilities.
The DEPT 35 also re affirms the prediction. Literature values are conducted experimentally and are
obtained in the lab manual on page for both carbon and hydrogen NMR. They ultimately help serve as
a guide, narrowing down the range and reaffirming the prediction. Different types of protons have
distinct chemical shifts

The Management Integration Er Exploring The Swirls,...
1. (1) The five eras of budgeting policy discussed by Mitchell and Thurmaier in their article Currents
and Undercurrents in Budgeting Theory: Exploring the Swirls, Heading Upstream are the Control Era,
Management Integration Era, Planning Era, Policy Era and Collaboration Era. The Control Era lasted
from 1906 until 1938 and was dominated by efforts by the public to regain control over budgetary and
tax policies; Progressivism was a powerful movement, and it helped drive the movement to create
more defined budgets, leading to the establishment of the executive budgeting system and line item
budgeting. The Management Integration Era, between 1939 and 1965, saw another increase in
executive control over budgeting in order to keep pace with the expanding bureaucracy. Line item
budgets were moved away from in favor of lump sum grants to federal agencies and the budgeting
process began to be viewed more as a political process than an economic one, as differing interests
among politicians determined how much money would be allocated to each agency or project. Next
came the Planning Era from 1960 to 1978 and was shaped by the Cold War and Great Society
programs. Budgets were now planned years ahead using the Planning Programming Budgeting
Systems, and economists proposed applying macroeconomics and microeconomics to understand
various facets of the budget. Between 1978 and 1992 was the Policy Era, which saw significant cuts in
federal grants to the states and returned budgetary

The Iliad, A Homeric Epic That Depicted The Age Of Heroes
The Iliad, a Homeric epic that depicted the age of heroes in Archaic Greece. An age of giant, god like,
men, and a time of true heroism. The themes of the Iliad encompass a realm consisting of the
principles of justice, vengeance, and honour in Greek society. A monumental theme that Homer
brought through the Iliad was the idea of Greek Shame culture, which Involved public praise and
blame, to honor and shame one before others in one s society. The assemblies, called by the Achaean
commanders, where the Achaeans would discuss and delegate battle strategy, acted as a perfect place
for one to gain/denounce ones honour. These assemblies represented the political make up of the
Achaean coalition force, where commanders could effectively voice their concerns and opinions on
matters that face the council, all while fostering discussion that unified the Achaean force.
Agamemnon was head of the Achaean army, with his royal scepter, but he still needed the confidence
of his commanders in order to rule effectively. He established this confidence in the assemblies
throughout the Iliad. The assemblies acted as forums of discussion and delegation, where those who
were worthy, could speak and voice themselves.
To understand the essence of the assembly, it is easier to view them as an advisory council. Where the
commanders of the Achaean force advised Agamemnon on appropriate courses of action. Agamemnon

thought process was that those who were economically disadvantaged would continue to be
disadvantaged and this program would fix it. Throughout the years amendments were made to be
more inclusive and effective. Changes include the addition of medical care, community development,

Racism And Discrimination In The 1900 s
Justice is served by those who see the good in humanity. Imagine living in a world where everywhere

Nanacha s Digger
There is a fierce competition going on every night in the woods, a secret ritualistic meeting of
disenfranchised businessmen. Each armed with a shovel they challenge is to dig for as long as you
can. The nightly competition attracts a nameless and silent protagonist, an office worker who spends
his days fantasizing about the act of digging. He must face some fierce competition in order to make it
to the top and beat the man who silently watches over the event. Digger is an example that in the
world of the absurd anything can become a competition. This short film which features no dialogue
and a lot of digging is more fun in execution than concept. The late night rituals the men perform in
the short makes it feel as if this is just an event that has been and always will be, steeped in a deep
tradition with synchronized dances and an unspoken language that you have to dig to prove your
worth. Although it is hard to imagine this drawn out into feature length as a short film it is very
successful at creating this odd, funny yet endearing culture of a bunch of businessmen digging holes in
the middle of the forest while being cheered on by their peers. Digger is a comedic gem with an ideal

Everyone is expected to do the right thing in a society that has a social awareness. The social
awareness includes moral behaviour, ethical behaviour and obey the rules. Forest and land fire is a
complex environmental problem in Indonesia. In the last 18 years since 1997/1998, forest and land
fires happen in every year in Indonesia. The problem is not only because of natural cause but also
human action cause. The human cause is from population growth that impacts to the increasing needs
of human life and pushes human action in utilizing nature intensively. Therefore as a consequence of
human action to the resource of consumption is a threatening to the sustainability of nature and to
human itself. Furthermore global climate change phenomenon as an impact of human action also has
caused El Nino and impacted to the length of drought season in Indonesia. As a tropical and an
archipelago country, Indonesia s weather condition is vulnerable because of climate change. Land and
forest area are easily burned and the fire are becoming out of control whenever drought season come.
Forest and land fire have caused significant economic losses, human health problem, and damage
environment and biodiversity in the area. It also increases tension between Indonesia and other
ASEAN countries that have been impacted by haze of forest and land

The Influence of George Frideric Handel on Music
Introduction
Over time, the world has seen many outstanding musicians, and so much fantastic music. Each highly
remembered composer or musician changed the way we think and see the world. They give us new
ideas, and music is a wonderful way to convey moods and emotions. Each also slightly changed music
itself. Handel was one of the greatest of these people. He was a superior composer who largely
influenced and expanded music.
Background
George Frideric Handel was born in Germany, but found his future in England as a composer. Stanley
states that: Handel was by training and temperament a composer... Like Mozart he possessed in the
highest degree the supreme attributes of the musical dramatist (105 106). The surprising thing is

England loved Handel dearly. He was famous all over. He wrote different genres, and for many
occasions, so many people were familiar with him, one way or another.
The musical history of England is greatly dependent on Handel. He was, undoubtedly, one of their
most honored composers.
To George Frederik Handel we own our prestige as a musical nation; to his inimitable genius and
mighty intellect we are indebted ... [Handel s operas] have served as a model for the formation of our
national style; his individual idiosyncrasies have become the accepted formulae of sacred musical
utterance, and the purity of his themes and major proportions of his style have given at once the
example, and the spirit of emulation to succeeding generations of native musicians! (Qtd in. Parker)
He gave England its reputation in music, providing the foundation for many fantastic composers after
him. Handel notably impacted the writings of future composers. Langlois evaluates Handel s influence
in many of Mozart s pieces. These are in pieces such as The Solemn Vespers, or C Minor Mass. He
also tells of Handel s influence on Beethoven. There can be found a certain Handelian influence in
Beethoven s music. Many of Beethoven s grand themes sound as if they could have been written by

1970s Pop Culture
America during the 1970s was full of change and acceptance of different groups of people and a
variety of cultures. That led to many people trying and experimenting with different ideas, especially
within pop culture. The 1970s had many elements of pop culture that we still experience today. Some
aspects of the 1970s culture are music, television, movies, literature, and trends.
The 70 s brought a large variety of music, including Funk, Hard Rock, and Disco. Some singers,
songwriters, and both include Johnny Cash, Diana Ross, and the Jackson 5. Johnny Cash was born in
Kingsland, Arkansas on February 26, 1932, and grew up to be an American singer and a songwriter.

Due to the many movements in the 70s, such as the Women s Liberation Movement, society was
changing rapidly. Men and women frequently breaking expected social fashion rules was one
example; people started to use their clothes for self expression and women, especially, wore clothing
that reflected their personality and desire for comfort. Another fad of the decade was kung fu and
other Asian martial arts; the trend started due to Bruce Lee s movies Fists of Fury and Enter the
Dragon, which were both made in the early 1970s. From then, Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, and other
actors of the like became well known, becoming part of the American culture that is still relevant to
today. Finally, another trend was the rage over organic food. Similar to today, consumers back then
were also concerned about what they were eating and wanted to be able to have a diet that was both
beneficial to them and the Earth. Earth friendly farming ways were strongly encouraged while other
ways, such as growth regulators, chemical preservatives, and pesticides, were becoming

The Importance Of Communication And Communication
In 2008, the World Health Organization estimated that as many as one in ten patients are harmed while
receiving care (Armellino, Griffin, Fitzpatrick 2010, p.796). This demonstrates the substantial
potential for improvement. Finkelman (2016) mentions that a code of silence exists because in the past
people are quick to blame the person who made the mistake, over looking all the steps in the system
that precipitated that error. This malignant silence disrupts a true and just safety culture from
improving patient outcomes. The ideal safety culture in healthcare should focus on the big picture of
healthcare as a system by empowering staff to raise concerns. With these shared experiences, a
dialogue can be created among staff and management to develop plans that improve patient safety.
Multiple studies correlate that harm and poor patient outcomes are a result of lacking patient safety
(DiCuccio, 2015). A successful patient safety culture requires responsibility of the team to increase
staff awareness focusing on education in topics of quality care and error reporting. Why the silence
exists is complex and the explanations may vary between units and between hospitals.
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has developed a hospital survey on patient
safety culture. The hospital survey on patient safety (SOPS) is able to examine individual hospitals
and units to improve patient safety and patient outcomes by understanding the source of underreported
errors. SOPS

The Learning Environment Of For Online Instruction
Introduction . This writer will critique methodologies used by scholar practitioners and compose
responses identifying best practices in educational research. In reviewing the research for these five
empirical articles, this writer identified pertinent scholarly articles that dealt with social constructivism
and eLearning. In all of the articles, the authors placed great emphasis upon the learner centered
approach. From the gleanings of the information researched, it is what we (practitioners) do with the
information, and how we as (learners) construct knowledge that is relevant and important to

objective of the study. The findings from the study showed the statistics of the stakeholders who were
participating and the growth of their participation. It is significant to note that this study was one of a
few research studies that had been conducted concerning the Malaysian School System. There were
seven high schools and three primary schools participating in this quantitative study. Out of a total of
608 students, 304 were chosen to participate in the Constructivism Learning Environment

The Crusades And The Cuban Missile Crisis
For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all
breathe the same air. We all cherish our children s future. And we are all mortal ( Nuclear Test Ban
Treaty ). These words were said by John F. Kennedy in June 1963, when there were signs of lessening
tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union, and signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban
Treaty, which forbid nuclear weapon tests or other nuclear explosions under water, in the atmosphere,
or in irradiated outer space. It allowed underground nuclear tests as long as no radioactive debris falls

It began when the United States discovered that there were missiles in their neighboring country Cuba.
The missiles stationed in Cuba, belonged to the Soviet Union. Also, the United States placed their
missiles in the Soviet neighboring country of Turkey and in the southern part of the nearby country of
Italy. Kennedy and his advisers were planning to launch missiles into Soviet territory, but at the last
second, he called off his top advisers and canceled the nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. The Cuban
Missile Crisis is like the Crusades in early first millennia. Cuba would represent Jerusalem, the
parenthetical focus of the Crusades. The U.S. would represent the Christians, who won the Crusades
because the United States would eventually win the Cold War. The U.S.S.R. would represent the
Muslims, who lost the the Crusades because the Soviets lost the war in the end. The Cuban Missile
Crisis can be similar to the Crusades because both events started almost the same way. The Crusades
started when Muslims wanted to conquer land near Jerusalem, the holy city that belong to the
Christians, just like the Soviets and Cuba. The Christians were afraid that the Muslims would take
over the city of Jerusalem, just like the U.S. thought that the Soviets were going to launch missiles
into the United States. November 25, 2016, Fidel Castro, former President and Communist Leader of
Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, died. No one is sure if the force of the revolution and the crisis
will dissipate without Mr. Castro and, eventually, his brother. But Fidel Castro s impact on Latin
America and the Western Hemisphere has the earmarks of lasting indefinitely (DePalma). The
capacity of his identity remains inevitable, for better or worse, not only in Cuba but also throughout

Do not overreact to your mistakes. They are not failures. They are setbacks. Failure happens when you
stop trying. Never stop. Mistakes often cannot be corrected. It is more important to accept them, learn
from them, and move forward. If you miss a meal or a training session, do not try to make one up.
Review how and why you missed the meal or training session to prevent from repeating the same
mistake in the future. Move on by focusing on your next meal or training session. This keeps you on
track and that much closer to achieving your objectives. Do not dwell on your mistakes, beat yourself
up, or punish yourself with guilt, shame, or negativity. Following up a nutrition or training mistake
with an emotional mistake just compounds the problem. You are human. Mistakes happen. In order to

The poem begins with an introduction to the offspring Anne Bradstreet compares her work, The Tenth

Now I never wanted let my toes indulge in the warmth of the sand or let my piecey hair fall across my

rubbing a credit card repeatedly over the sting. Not knowing what to expect I looked down to see that
my shin had puffed up multiple inches and turned a purple color. I was escorted upstairs to the

The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls
Usually in society parents are to be blamed for failing to raise their children in the right way. It is very
easy for the society to criticize parents when they mistreat their child or not take care of his/her needs
and wants. It is easy for a parent to get judged in society comparing to a child because parents are role
models for children s. Even when a child has been mistreated by her/his parent, it is easy for the child
to forgive their parents. The reason behind that situation would be a parent s unconditional love that a
child sees, despite what he/she has been through. In the book The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, she
portraits a situation like that where the character spends her childhood memories with her father. Even
though Jeannette s father Rex Walls was an irresponsible father and failed to protect his children,
Jeannette still loved her father dearly. During Christmas Jeannette s father Rex would give his kids

enough to face the cold. As the author quotes, the cold never bothered him (39). In other words, Rex
Walls has the potential to make Jeannette feel special. Specifically, Jeannette describes her father in a

Have you ever been in a situation where multiple salesmen start giving you advice to persuade you to
buy this vehicle, but you do not know whose advice to take? Car buying has become increasingly
difficult for many new comers as the sales people try to convince you to buy a more expensive car

Harry Potter Disenchantment Of The World Analysis
The article by Michale Osteling, Harry Potter and the Disenchantment of the World , examined the

children s book series, Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling. For many conservative Christians, the book is
seen as a portal to the New Age, Wicca and diabolical magic. For the Secular commentary, which
included liberal Christians, view the book as a make believe, so it should not concern Christians,
because it is not a real occult magic. It is more of an instrumental rather than religious and parallels

Even looking at children s cartoon shows like Scooby doo, we can see that difference. The old Scooby

Analysis Of The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven...
Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence. Peter A. Levine, Ph.D. In
Sherman Alexie s collection of short stories, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, we read
stories of Native American struggles for survival in an American society designed to keep Native
Americans locked in the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Alexie illustrates the importance of
rejecting intergenerational trauma as a method of survival, by isolating the two main causes
intergenerational trauma becomes inescapable and giving examples that showcase the impact of
attempting to survive the cycle. Through the interpretation of multiple sources, it becomes clear that
the inescapability of intergenerational trauma is the outcome of internalized oppression and
pessimism.
Internalized oppression is just one factor that contributes to the inescapability of intergenerational
trauma. Alexie uses figurative language to demonstrate that the cycle of oppression is further
perpetuated by the concept of racial inferiority, poverty, and failure to achieve an education in his
short story The Only Traffic Signal on the Reservation Doesn t Flash Red Anymore . The main
character, Victor, sits on the porch with his friend Adrian as they reminisce their past and hope for
others futures. Victor claims that Indians [could] easily survive the big stuff... It s the small things that

This film also inspired many. One of the first events that had an impact on the LGBTQ community
was when Harvey Milk was elected in the Californian public office. This was the most impactful event
in the film because this brought the gay community together and their rights were finally taken into

Discrimination Lawsuit Against Walgreens Co
In 2005, private plaintiffs filed a class action racial discrimination lawsuit against Walgreens, their
employer in the case Tucker v. Walgreen Co., Case No. 05 CV 440 GPM. The plaintiffs alleged that
Walgreens Co. practiced a national, cultural discrimination against African American employees and
managers. Walgreens did this by denying their rights to be selected for entry level positions of
Assistant Manager or Management Trainees, rejecting any promotions for African American
employees in the retail or pharmacy career paths, and placing African American employees in
predominately African American or lower income stores. The plaintiffs sought to receive declaratory
and injunctive relief, as well as compensation and punitive damages. The plaintiffs also pursued class
certification for all African American employees nationwide. In the fall of 2006, the plaintiffs filed a
second complaint which the defendant moved to dismiss. In winter of 2006, the District Court denied
the defendant s motion to dismiss the complaint. The following year, in March 2007, the EEOC filed

Biomass As A Renewable Energy Resource
3 Biomass as a renewable energy resource
Biomass can be considered as a renewable energy resource, although burning biomass releases carbon
dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere similar to burning fossil fuel (Liu H. 2011). There is a significant
difference in CO2 release between burning a fossil fuel and burning biomass. Burning a fossil fuel
releases CO2 that has been locked up for millions of years in the ground, affecting the natural CO2
cycle and resulting in an increase in the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Burning biomass
simply return to the atmosphere the same amount of CO2 which was absorbed from the air via the
photosynthesis process while the biomass plant was growing over a relatively short period of time (a
few years to decade), and there is no net release of C02 into the atmosphere, i.e., CO2 neutral, if the
cycle of growth and harvest is sustained. Therefore, biomass can consider as a renewable energy
resource as shown in Figure 3.1 (Li u H. 2011). If the production and transportation of the biomass
fuel involve the use of fossil fuel, there would become net release of CO2 with biomass combustion
(Liu H. 2011) Figure 3.1 Biomass is a renewable energy resource (Liu H. 20 11)
In fact, real biomass energy production systems are differing from the ideal carbon cycle shown in
Figure 3.1 in two important ways. Firstly, the production of biomass energy always consumes fossil
energy for the farming, transportation and production stages of the process (Hill et al.

Equality Essay
A young man lives in a place where the word quot;I quot; does not have meaning. It is a society where
there are no individuals. It is, however, a place where you strive to serve your brothers. Equality 7
2521 was taught from birth that the individual is not important. He is in a crazed society where the
only form of government is collectivism.
Equality, at age 21, has absolutely no freedom. He is a a strong, tall young man who stands about six
feet. However, in this society, anyone who is six feet tall was considered to be evil. His dream of

He also wants to prove that being tall does not make you an evil individual.
He feels that he has sinned because he was sent to the Palace of Corrective Detention when he did not

out when and where they are going to meet and devises a plan. He decides to escape from the Palace
of Corrective Detention and go to where the meeting is being held.
He arrives at the Council of Scholars and look at him in astonishment. The members are afraid at first
because they do not know exactly what Equality is presenting to them. After they realize what it is that
Equality is showing them, they are very insulted that a mere street sweeper was belittling their
intelligence as Council members. Upon hearing that his idea is rejected, he leaps out the window and
runs to the Uncharted Forest where no man survives. He finds out that Liberty has followed him into
the forest. They come together and find an abandoned house.
They enter it and see things that they have never seen before. They find clothes, 2 beds in one room,
and one thing that shocked them the most, a mirror. After looking at the mirror, he now knows for sure
that he is

  • 2. J. D. Salinger Influences 20th Century American novelist and short story writer, J.D. Salinger, wrote many stories, most of which have been heavily influenced by his time spent in World War II. Arguably Salinger s most popular novel, The Catcher in the Rye, was carried into battle with him and has distinct influences of Salinger s experiences within it. Salinger was discharged from the army in 1945 (French xiv). and because of his experiences in the war, books like The Catcher in the Rye and many others have a much darker tone and plot than the stories written before his time in war. Before the war, Salinger mostly wrote short stories that lacked fighting sequences and any type of violence. After the war, Salinger s writing became harsher and more vicious. The first of Salinger s works to feature a combat scene was a short story called The Magic Foxhole and it described the battle of Normandy, something that Salinger experienced but didn t discuss in his personal life (Slawenski). This quote shows the involuntary effects that the soldiers endure after they serve. Though, challenging to experience, the war efforts of J.D. Salinger greatly impacted his writing for the ... To a certain extent, the First World War was a major contributing factor to the two revolutions that took place in 1917, the February and October Revolution. The war worsened the issues that already existed in Russia and also highlighted the lack of leadership shown by the Tsar and the Provisional Government set up after the February Revolution and also the Tsars military command over the army during the war. However, World War One was not the only reason for the revolutions taking place and acted as a tipping factor from the already undergoing social, political and economical problems plaguing Russia which led to the fall of the Tsar and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The provisional government tried to regain the support of the army and the Russian public by making the army launch the June offensive, with the July offensive in the first two weeks being able to exploit the poor morale of the Austrian Army were then pushed back because of soldiers refusing to obey order thus overriding the early success. After the Germans counter attacked leaving thousands of soldiers deserted the army suffered a collapse. Not only did this show how poorly the Russian army was organised, equipped and mentally able to win the war but it also showed the Provisional Governments disregard of listening to the publics cries to stop the war. During the first revolution the political issues were a large factor for it to happen. With the Tsar leaving the country to command the army, the Tsarina was left in charge. This was a poor decision at first because the Tsarina was German and many people saw her as either a spy for Germany or having split allegiances so would make poor decisions and not consider what was best for Russia. The government became very unstable with the Tsarina in charge as she continually kept changing the ministers especially if they did not want to make decisions directed by the Man of God . On top of this the Tsarina took advice from a peasant called Rasputin, who was first Tsars Nicholas II s sons doctor to try and cure his haemophilia. • 4. My Creation Of A Soundtrack For Octavia E. Butler s... Soundtracks to films often strive to represent the themes and feeling of the film, and direct the audience towards particular emotions. A good soundtrack not only allows for the listener to understand the film better, but it should also bring to mind particular scenes, images, or characters. Soundtracks for books can do the same. In my creation of a soundtrack for Octavia E. Butler s Parable of the Sower, I strove to encompass Lauren s journey throughout the novel and the various emotions that she experiences. Since Lauren is reflecting on her experiences, her journey becomes central to how the audience feels and experiences the emotional aspects of the book. The songs not only represent Lauren, but also the entire feel and theme of the text. The songs follow along with Lauren, with her despair, death, and the need for survival. As I scoured through song after song, I tried to connect each song choice with a particular moment in Lauren s story and the hopelessness of a dystopian future Butler warns her audience about. The first track is Things We Lost in the Fire by the band Bastille, and is one of the more literal song selections about the event that triggers the rest of the events in the story to occur: the death of her father, the pyros, the destruction of her community. The song is literally about things that burn up and leave, never to be seen again. Fire plays a key role in the fear aspect of the book; fire is synonymous with chaos. Not only does the song ... • 5. Formal Mathematical Methods And Hardware Systems Literature Review Formal mathematical methods are system designs that utilize specific rigorous mathematical models in the production of software and hardware systems. The methods are unique in comparison with other methods for they utilize mathematical proof as a complement to system testing so as to ensure a perfect behavior. A formal approach to system designs ensures safety due to the complicated nature of systems. The use of formal verification schemes creates the difference between formal methods and other design systems. Hence, the primary principles of the system must be proven to be right before they are adopted. Extensive testing has been used for long in traditional system designs to ascertain behavior, but only finite conclusions are achieved. Testing only reveals situations where a system would not fail, but the behavior outside the testing scenario is not accounted for. If the result is positive after testing the theorem, then it remains true. An error in design is impossible to fix via formal verification but could help in identification of errors in reasoning which would otherwise be left unverified. The knowledge of mathematics results from proofs that consist of valid and certain conclusions. Verification of mathematical statements is not through experiments or social agreements but logical deductions from basic assumptions. The method assures that the knowledge has universal application since mapping a mathematical statement into physical reality holds ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The performance in Stratton Hall at Bob Jones University was a highlight of the European Travelogue, directed by Dan Turner. The program included A Moorside Suite by Gustav Holst; Three Revolutionary Marches by Bedrich Smetana; Spring: Overture for Wind Orchestra by Johan de Meij; Galop, from Genevieve de Brabant by Jacques Offenbach; Ile de France from Suite Francaise by Darius Milhaud; and Danceries by Kenneth Hesketh. Each piece was concluded with eager applause and praise. The concert opened with A Moorside Suite from England; it began quietly accompanied by the clarinet and saxophone. The tempo started out slowly, then shifted to fast and back again to slow, throughout the entire piece. There was an appearance of a few soloists including the oboe, clarinet, and saxophone. This movement ended with the entire orchestra leading to a final chorale that builds to a fortissimo climax. Throughout history there have been patterns of exploitation of immigrant workers by businesses in order to increase profits; the Mexican migrant workers of southern California are the most recent historical group to fall into this pattern of exploitation mostly from their lack of organization. The migrant worker community became his main focus, this resulted his creation of the UFW in 1962 (Chavez Foundation). His earlier life as a migrant worker would be a strong influence for attaining better working conditions for those workers. Early in Chavez s life, he was exposed to the hardships of migrant working. When Chavez was 10 his family was forced from their home in Yuma, Arizona because of back taxes and because of the depression, his family couldn t pay the payments (Castillo and Garcia, 7). Chavez began migrant work when he was 14, and the injustices had a memorable effect. Migrant workers were often exploited because of their lack of organization in a uniform union group, something that Chavez would eventually change. In future years the UFW would give migrant workers a voice in the conditions under which they were living and working. Strikes, boycotts, and other nonviolent protests were essential to the UFW s ability to attain advancements in the Mexican American workplace. Though strikes previous to 1964 were often unsuccessful because of the Bracero program that was implemented by both the United States and Mexican governments. Cowans 3 Newton s Last Law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This means when you kick a soccer ball it s suppose to come back to you with the equal amount of strength. This is actually true, but we aren t aware of this because our leg has a greater mass, than soccer ball. When we apply force to the ball the same amount does come back, but because of the unbalanced masses, we don t fill the push back, and this also means we have a greater Inertia because of our leg s resistance. In Virginia, we do not have a state law that specifically requires employers to offer pregnancy leave. Being disabled by pregnancy means that you can no longer do certain activities so that the mother can deliver safely and care for the newborn. The four states are California, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. California and New Jersey gives you 6 weeks and Rhode Island gives you only 4 weeks. If a proton (or a set of magnetically equivalent nuclei) has n neighbors of magnetically equivalent protons. Then the equation n+1 can be applied, where n stands for neighboring protons. (1) The five eras of budgeting policy discussed by Mitchell and Thurmaier in their article Currents and Undercurrents in Budgeting Theory: Exploring the Swirls, Heading Upstream are the Control Era, Management Integration Era, Planning Era, Policy Era and Collaboration Era. The Control Era lasted from 1906 until 1938 and was dominated by efforts by the public to regain control over budgetary and tax policies; Progressivism was a powerful movement, and it helped drive the movement to create more defined budgets, leading to the establishment of the executive budgeting system and line item budgeting. The Management Integration Era, between 1939 and 1965, saw another increase in executive control over budgeting in order to keep pace with the expanding bureaucracy. Line item budgets were moved away from in favor of lump sum grants to federal agencies and the budgeting process began to be viewed more as a political process than an economic one, as differing interests among politicians determined how much money would be allocated to each agency or project. Next came the Planning Era from 1960 to 1978 and was shaped by the Cold War and Great Society programs. Budgets were now planned years ahead using the Planning Programming Budgeting Systems, and economists proposed applying macroeconomics and microeconomics to understand various facets of the budget. An age of giant, god like, men, and a time of true heroism. The themes of the Iliad encompass a realm consisting of the principles of justice, vengeance, and honour in Greek society. A monumental theme that Homer brought through the Iliad was the idea of Greek Shame culture, which Involved public praise and blame, to honor and shame one before others in one s society. The assemblies, called by the Achaean commanders, where the Achaeans would discuss and delegate battle strategy, acted as a perfect place for one to gain/denounce ones honour. These assemblies represented the political make up of the Achaean coalition force, where commanders could effectively voice their concerns and opinions on matters that face the council, all while fostering discussion that unified the Achaean force. Agamemnon was head of the Achaean army, with his royal scepter, but he still needed the confidence of his commanders in order to rule effectively. He established this confidence in the assemblies throughout the Iliad. The assemblies acted as forums of discussion and delegation, where those who were worthy, could speak and voice themselves. With these shared experiences, a dialogue can be created among staff and management to develop plans that improve patient safety. Multiple studies correlate that harm and poor patient outcomes are a result of lacking patient safety (DiCuccio, 2015). A successful patient safety culture requires responsibility of the team to increase staff awareness focusing on education in topics of quality care and error reporting. Why the silence exists is complex and the explanations may vary between units and between hospitals. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has developed a hospital survey on patient safety culture. The hospital survey on patient safety (SOPS) is able to examine individual hospitals and units to improve patient safety and patient outcomes by understanding the source of underreported errors. We all cherish our children s future. And we are all mortal ( Nuclear Test Ban Treaty ). These words were said by John F. Kennedy in June 1963, when there were signs of lessening tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union, and signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which forbid nuclear weapon tests or other nuclear explosions under water, in the atmosphere, or in irradiated outer space. Kennedy and his advisers were planning to launch missiles into Soviet territory, but at the last second, he called off his top advisers and canceled the nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. The Cuban Missile Crisis is like the Crusades in early first millennia. Cuba would represent Jerusalem, the parenthetical focus of the Crusades. The U.S. would represent the Christians, who won the Crusades because the United States would eventually win the Cold War. The U.S.S.R. would represent the Muslims, who lost the the Crusades because the Soviets lost the war in the end. The Cuban Missile Crisis can be similar to the Crusades because both events started almost the same way. The Crusades started when Muslims wanted to conquer land near Jerusalem, the holy city that belong to the Christians, just like the Soviets and Cuba. The Christians were afraid that the Muslims would take over the city of Jerusalem, just like the U.S. thought that the Soviets were going to launch missiles into the United States. Levine, Ph.D. In Sherman Alexie s collection of short stories, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, we read stories of Native American struggles for survival in an American society designed to keep Native Americans locked in the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Alexie illustrates the importance of rejecting intergenerational trauma as a method of survival, by isolating the two main causes intergenerational trauma becomes inescapable and giving examples that showcase the impact of attempting to survive the cycle. Through the interpretation of multiple sources, it becomes clear that the inescapability of intergenerational trauma is the outcome of internalized oppression and pessimism. Internalized oppression is just one factor that contributes to the inescapability of intergenerational trauma. Alexie uses figurative language to demonstrate that the cycle of oppression is further perpetuated by the concept of racial inferiority, poverty, and failure to achieve an education in his short story The Only Traffic Signal on the Reservation Doesn t Flash Red Anymore . • 40. Biomass As A Renewable Energy Resource 3 Biomass as a renewable energy resource Biomass can be considered as a renewable energy resource, although burning biomass releases carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere similar to burning fossil fuel (Liu H. 2011). There is a significant difference in CO2 release between burning a fossil fuel and burning biomass. Burning a fossil fuel releases CO2 that has been locked up for millions of years in the ground, affecting the natural CO2 cycle and resulting in an increase in the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Burning biomass simply return to the atmosphere the same amount of CO2 which was absorbed from the air via the photosynthesis process while the biomass plant was growing over a relatively short period of time (a few years to decade), and there is no net release of C02 into the atmosphere, i.e., CO2 neutral, if the cycle of growth and harvest is sustained. Therefore, biomass can consider as a renewable energy resource as shown in Figure 3.1 (Li u H. 2011). If the production and transportation of the biomass fuel involve the use of fossil fuel, there would become net release of CO2 with biomass combustion (Liu H. 2011) Figure 3.1 Biomass is a renewable energy resource (Liu H. 20 11) In fact, real biomass energy production systems are differing from the ideal carbon cycle shown in Figure 3.1 in two important ways.
