The Negative Effects Of Animal Testing
Animal testing has been around since 500 BC starting with dissecting animals in ancient greece.
French animal testers believed that animals were automata and could not feel pain or emotions.
There was no public objections to animal testing until the 19th century when there was an increase
of adopting domestic pets. Nowadays public opinion is split down the middle on whether or not
animals should be tested on. The animalsare generally tested on for cosmetics, health, commercial,
biomedical, space and military purposes. People for animal testingthink of it as a way to save
human and animal lives, and that there is no other way to get this good of data. They also believe
that the strict rules prevent any mistreatment of the animals.... Show more content on

With only using petri dishes scientists are not able to find all the affects, for example loss in
eyesight can not be tested with only using it on tissue sample(Kara Rogers). Animal testing benefits
the animals themselves too. The American Veterinary Medical Association actually supports animal
testing, in many cases the tests on animals have saved many species from becoming extinct like the
california condor, and the tamarins(American Association).
People opposed to animal testing will say that it is inhumane and cruel. Animals in the tests are
said to be force feed, and forced inhalation, they also are forced to have cosmetics dropped into
their eyes to see the outcome. The US Department of agriculture said that around 97,123 animals in
2010 suffered during testing, and were not given antithetic. We can now test in other ways that do
not include animals, like in vitro testing. We can also use human volunteers, and only use enough
that it does not severely damage them. There are also computer simulations that will show how it
affects the body. Drugs that pass animal testing are not necessarily safe, like in the 1950 s a
sleeping pill was shown to cause birth defects even though it had been tested by animals.
Although the opposing side has many intriguing arguments, animal testing is still the most
plausible way to better the general health of the population. In order to better the conditions of the

Little Rock Nine Research Paper
There are many ways that the press worked to clarify events for the national audience from the
Little Rock Nine. The Little Rock Nine was a group of nine black children who wanted a chance
to go to Central High School for educational purposes. What they didn t know was that there were
segregationists who would do everything in their power to make sure the black students wouldn t
have the experience they wanted at Central. The media took these moments to make news that
everyone would see and know about. Many ways that the media was able to get their point across
was from the pictures. In Little Rock Girl 1957 by Shelly Tougas, there were many pictures that
helped people see with their own eyes what was actually happening. For example, on page

The Antagonist
An antagonist is often referred to as the villain in context of a story, especially in a novel. But by
it s formal definition, an antagonist is, A person who opposes to, struggles against, or competes
with another opponent; adversary. (Dictionary.com) with that person being the protagonist who is
portrayed as the opposite of the antagonist classified by the root word ant or anti . In the novel
Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, the reader can compare both the characters Milady de
Winter and D artagnan. The heroic Gascon D artagnan, who travels to Paris for his acceptance into
King Louis XIV s Three Musketeer group, is attributed with protagonistic traits in contrast to

Although dueling was supposedly illegal, it still showed the chivalry and code of honor as
there are specific rules to the duel. Even with this being true, D artagnan was still in opposition
with Milady doing things just as bad as her actions in counter to hers. For example, in chapter
thirty six Dream of Vengeance, D artagnan has sexual contact with Milady but tricking her into
thinking it s Comte de Warde. This reveals his disregard of honor that he exemplifies in the
beginning of the book and shows his force of power and persuasion to get his way just as Milady
de Winter does. Not only that, but technically Milady de Winter is still married to Athos who
although has a broken heart, still follows the laws of the Church meaning that D artagnan had an
affair knowingly. D artagnan being the main character and hero in the novel does not justify
behavior yet he is still considered the one who can be connected with. As according to D artagnan ,

Investigating The Failure Rates And Mean Time On Repair...
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
The study aims to determine the failure rates and mean time to repair statistics in relation to the
medical equipment in order to make correlations between the probabilities of harm to patients in a
sudden failure of the equipment. To determine whether there is another or alternative way of
equipment maintenance management strategies from the relevant industry experience and to check
if they have the potential to improve the availability of hospital equipment in critical conditions and
to reduce the harm to patients by using the equipment s in proper conditions by not playing with
their lives.
METHODOLOGY
This study was conducted by examining the maintenance management strategies of critical hospital;

The research was conducted by conducting a survey. The survey was designed in such a way that
every hospital had to answer the questions in the survey. Every hospital had been given six to eight
copies of the questionnaire depending on the involvement of the hospital departments and the type
of equipment s available for the survey and the maintenance strategies followed.
After completing the questionnaires, approval was required from the hospital head who is
responsible for every activity taking place in his hospital. The main study of this experiment is to
check the non availability of the equipment or failure, which would risk the patient s life in
danger. The rules and regulations or criteria for conducting the research on the criticality of the
equipment is the risk of failure or breakdown of the equipment when it is used on a patient, the
average time used for a patient, average number of patients used or serviced by the equipment,
operational life of the equipment and the availability of alternative equipment in case of failure or
malfunction at critical times. There are around 6782 devices were examined during the process. We
have taken only 5 equipment s for the study in this paper.
In the pilot project we have considered only 5 hospitals and five types of critical hospital
equipment were examined and that had a non availability of high risk level. The equipment s are

Comparative Analysis Of Strategies And Views Of Katha...
In this paper, comparative analysis of strategies and views of Katha Pollitt and Aaron Devor,
about the determinants which define roles of genders in a society will be discussed. The central
idea of the paper is that gender has specific roles which are defined through their innate
characteristics and social constructs. Since the start of feminist movements, a debate has arised on
the behaviors and roles of genders. Feminist movements were purposed to achieve, the rights of
women based on their roles equal to men in the society. Which led to debate over differences
between abilities and preferences of genderthat are the basis of different and unequal roles of males
and females.

In addition to that people around that child will justify these sterotype behaviors by defining them
as natural roles which result from differences in hormones and genes. As she says, we are told that
the source of these robust preferences must lie outside society in prenatal hormonal influences,
brain chemistry, genes and that feminism has reached its natural limits. (Pollitt,1).
According to Devor, all female were biologically destined to have role of maternity and
household. There is a reason behind certain differences between biological structures and
cognitive behaviors of males and females. Hence, females were predisposed to have role of
maternity and children care while males do not have this role. He believes in hierarchical
appraisals of natural roles of males and females. If an individual performs duties which are
naturally attributed to opposite gender, that individual will not receive encouraging response from
society (Devor,674). Girls and boys are born different because of biological evolutions and gene
differences, thus different gender attributes start before birth. There are several biological
differences in physical structure as well as cognitive processes and intellectual traits of males and
females. These cognitive differences exist due to presence of some particular hormones in gender.
If these particular hormones are removed from an individual, he will no longer display

Columbus Day Should No Longer Be A National Holiday
John Oliver is correct when he asserts that Columbus Day should no longer be a national holiday.
Columbus Day is the day we celebrate when Christopher Columbus landed in the New World. I
believe we should not celebrate Columbus Day because I m sure we are celebrating a murder and
the person supported in owning or controlling of a person. During that time of landing in the New
World, he went on a killing spree of humans and of in slaving the Native Americans.
Columbus Day shouldn t be a holiday anymore because all the Indians he enslaved and killed

addition to this the cultures from different continents have been changed because of Columbus. We

Christopher Columbus Biography explains The exchange also brought new diseases to both
hemispheres, though the effects were greatest in the Americans. Smallpox from the Old World
decimated millions of the Native American population The diseases were new to both the
Europeans and the Americans because it was the first time they had experienced this type of
diseases. It was very new to both of them at the time, so they didn t know how to handle it or let
alone cure it so they suffered. The Americans suffered the most from these diseases. In effect of the
Americans suffering from these diseases, the Europeans ended up out numbering them in a very big
margin. In addition, the exchange benefited the Europeans more the Americans and the rest of the
world a part of the exchange. American was changed and pretty much gone plus the Native
Americans disappeared too. All this happened because he made promises he couldn t keep like
bringing home a certain amount gold so instead, he brought to trade with slaves who carried the
disease to the Americans and Europeans.

Sunday Candy Analysis
Sunday Candy, a short film written by Chancellor Johnathan Bennett also known as Chance The

beyond rhyming over an arrangement of instruments, sounds, and tempos. Donnie Trumpet and the
Social Experiment deliver an easily relatable song and appear in this amusing short film directed by
Austin Vesely, Ian Eastwood and Chance The Rapper. With an engaging video setup, the use of
unconventional instruments, and thought provoking lyrics, Chance The Rapper allows the viewer

The listener can also understand that she is a church going woman who prays a lot for her
grandsons. Additionally, the listener can tell that his grandmother is very special to him and the
simple thought of her can move him to want to do better for himself. Bennett continues to vocalize
his appreciation for his grandmother, and the audience can understand that she is worth more than
money to him and even in times when they did not have a lot of money she always filled that
void. For example, in verse two, Hella holes in my stocking holding your pockets in place; I like
my love with a budget, I like my hugs with a scent; You smell like light, gas, water, electricity,
rent, (Genius) Chance tells how his grandmother simply reminds him of home. In the hook that
goes like, You gotta move it slowly; Take and eat my body like it s holy; I ve been waiting for
you for this whole week; I ve been praying for you, you re my Sunday candy, (Genius) Jamila
Woods really is able to express to the audience the feeling of missing your grandmother and wanting
to never leave them. This hook also compares the feeling Bennett has for his grandmother to the
Church ceremony of First Sunday Communion. Additionally, Woods sings in the bridge, You better
come on in this house, cause it s gonna rain; Rain down Zion, it s gonna rain. The audience can
make the comprehension that his grandmother would call him to come inside the house after a
certain time because after dark is safer to be inside rather than outside and Bennett always felt like

The Juggler Richard Wilbur Summary
In the poem, Juggler, Richard Wilbur incorporates the use of poetic devices such as imagery and
diction to allow the poem s speaker to describe the actions of a juggler that enlightens the moods of
the audience watching him, which the speaker is a part of. Through this analysis of the juggler it is
revealed that the speakerlives a mundane life.
The description of a ball is used to introduce the dullness of life to the speaker. A ball will
bounce, but less and less... Falling is what it loves, and the earth falls so in our hearts from
brilliance, Settles and is forgot (1 5). The choice of diction behind the words Bounce... less and
less and Settles and is forgot represents the drive in the life of the speaker. The speaker s drive
continues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It takes a sky blue juggler with five red balls to shake our gravity up (6 7). These lines reveal that
in the dullness of life, the speaker and other individuals require a stimuli in order to get shaken up.
Through the use of alliteration and a play on words, imagery is created in the following lines.
Whee, in the air the balls roll round, wheel on his wheeling hands, Learning the ways of
lightness, alter to spheres Grazing his finger ends (7 10). The alliteration in the words Whee...
wheel... wheeling and the play on words of mentioning lightness shortly after gravity create the
image of the juggler defying gravity itself in order to entertain these run of the mill people. On a
further note, through the use of diction, the speaker describes the god like actions of the juggler.
Swinging a small heaven about his ears. But a heaven is easier made of nothing at all... still and
sole within... with a gesture sure and noble He reels that heaven in, landing it ball by ball (12 17).
The choice of the benevolent diction of heaven and noble shows that the speaker respects the
juggler for doing an action that is relatively simple but happens to amount the juggler to someone of
more power for entertaining the crowd. In lines

Thucydides at His Best Essays
The true essence of human nature is seen during times of great hardships as can be seen comparing
Pericles Funeral Oration and the plague in Thucydides , The History of the Peloponnesian War.
Thucydides accounts for many different aspects of justice, power, and human nature through his
text. The order, the style of his writing, choice of words, and relations of what he believes actually
happened, allows the reader to make different inferences about the message he s trying to convey.
The juxtaposition of the two stories portrays many different characteristics to investigate and
analyze.
The question can be raised, why compare the funeral oration and the plague with each other, the
answer simply lies in its order. Thucydides shows ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also shows that when powerful speakers used rhetoric, they would exaggerate. Pericles allowed
the people to feel their city wouldn t be able to be destroyed, but the conceit he had for the city
didn t turn out to be true.
In the funeral oration there is a visual of continuous strength, courage, unity, fighting, and power
that is building this great city called Athens, but then when looking at the plague, you see it
break apart. Thucydides mentions the steps and characteristics of the symptoms the plague had
on the human body. He describes it so that the reader sees how the plague affected the body,
breaking it down organ by organ. This can relate to the breakdown of Athens due to the plague.
It takes this one disease to take one human life as well as a strongly built city. He also shows the
breakdown of the city by describing the setting, instead of seeing an orderly city with its
beautifully established buildings, you d find dead people lying one on top of the other in the
streets, sick people at the fountains, mostly signs of death around every corner.
The plague began with a high fever to the head and made its way down to the different parts of
the body, destroying it along the way, leaving its mark wherever possible. The same can be said
for the city. The plague hit the structure of the city, and destroyed it little by little, just as it
destroyed the different parts of the body, eventually causing a break down of the empire, the same
empire that

Punishment In Scarlet Letter
People that commit the same sinful act can have different punishments. In The Scarlet Letter
written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he writes about a new Puritan colony in North America. The
Puritans belief in a Christian god was very strong and the community had extreme faith in their
church officials. In this colony, anyone who was believed to have committed a sin was punished
harshly. The colony s top reverend Arthur Dimmesdale commits an act of adultery with a
beautiful woman Hester Prynne and have a daughter named Pearl. Hester was publicly shamed in
a scaffold in the marketplace of the colony and also has to bear a scarlet letter A on her chest
representing her sin. During this, Dimmesdale becomes ill and is treated by a physician who is

Hester is told that no mortal man has suffered as greatly as him. Chillingworth has deteriorated his

Later Dimmesdale is speaking with Hester in the woods and finds out that Chillingworth is her

experienced while under the care of Chillingworth was pure hell if it were to be blacker than the
sins of the minister. Dimmesdale being put under this psychological torture by someone that is
supposed to make him healthier makes the punishment worse. Also the added pressure from the
public to be perfect causes great

Why Is It Morally Permissible To Turn The Runaway Trolley
To begin with, the Trolley case is an experiment where you are put into a situation where you are
on a runaway trolley where the breaks do not work and you are headed for five people and you
can either hit the five people, killing them or save them by turning the trolley hitting one person
and killing him. There is another scenario called the Footbridge case where you are in the same
situation but in order to save the five people you have to push a fat man off a bridge stopping the
trolley. This is very interesting experiment that questions human ethicsand morality. It makes you
think whether or not it is morally permissible to turn the trolley. I argue that there is an important
moral difference between the Trolley case and the Footbridge case because there is a difference
between letting someone die to save people and killing someone to save people.... Show more

I disagree with Thompson that it would be impermissible to re direct the trolley because even
though in both cases one person dies from an action you take, the action has different moral
standards of reason of what is right and what is wrong. Most people agree that it is morally
permissible to turn the trolley killing the one man to save people five and it is wrong to push a
fat man from a bridge to save five people. Most people believe this because they know that there is
a distinct moral difference between incidentally killing someone and intentionally killing someone.
Intentionally killing some one is a universal law that has serious consequences which is why
people view pushing the fat man off the bridge as

Objectification In The Sandman
The Longing for Beauty
In his early 19th century narrative The Sandman, E.T.A. Hoffmann attempts to express the
possessiveness and obsessiveness of man that derives from appearance and sexuality. Hoffmann in
particular utilizes Klara and Olympia to exemplify Nathaniel s objectification of either of them and
his sub conscious ownership over both women. While Hoffmann degrades the standing of the
women in the narrative, he subsequently draws on an obsession with outward appearance and
beauty that is comparable to the Pygmalion myth. As Pygmalion attempts to have physical
possession over the beauty of his sculpture, Hoffmann similarly paints Nathaniel as irrationally
pursuing the possession or ownership of beauty through the female characters. Through the
symbolic objectification of the female characters and the obsessive sexualized actions of Nathaniel,
Hoffmann draws a parallel to the Pygmalion myth as beauty, grace, and sexuality become the
apparent paramount measure of value and also reveals the pitfalls created by such obsessions.
Throughout The Sandman, E.T.A. Hoffmann seeks to reveal the underlying references to the
Pygmalion myth by first portraying the female characters as subordinate, possessive objects that are
primarily defined by their beauty and are diminished to the standard of a piece of art. As the
narrative progresses, the emphasis on beauty begins to intensify and Hoffmann begins to direct the
illustration of the women through their outward appearance.

Coney Island Essay
Progressivism was at the peak of its movement in America during the new era of Coney Island
and was observed by many critics. Progressives at the time liked to focus on order and to
decrease activities that took away from the structure of life. It was the goal of progressives to
address any political or local problems, especially those focusing on an increase in
industrialization among urban societies and cultures (Textbook, 778). Kasson states in his book
that it was the goal of progressives to reform society back to work and profit, but the engineering
of the amusement parks and its influence was all incorrect to society (104 105). The book focuses
slightly on how Progressives used their movement to attack others who did not agree with their
political and economic beliefs. Whereas, Kasson explains Progressives as a voice of opinion

Examples Of Atonement In The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
In the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Coleridge uses the method of storytelling to
acknowledge and implement the reader into the situations that the Mariner faces. Coleridge does
this by implementing vivid imagery into his poem to create a tale that we the readers can easily
follow such as the tales we tell one another today to learn or understand different concepts in
modern day life.
The concept of sin and atonement are the allegories that we learn about in The Rime of the Ancient
Mariner; we learn that with sin comes the reprimand of a supernatural figure; however the prejudice
one faces helps lead to the forgiveness the Mariner learns to find within himself. The poem contains
riot only a mysterious or supernatural element, which

Sculpture and Donatello
#9; Donatello (1386 1466) was a master of sculpture in bronze and marble and was considered one
of the greatest Italian Renaissance artists of his time. There is much more to know about him,
though then the name alone. He has created some of the greatest works of art, not only in the
Italian renaissance, but human history as well.
A lot is known about his life and career but little is known about his character and personality.
Donatello never married and seems to be a man of В‘simple tastes . Patrons often found him hard
to deal with and he demanded a lot of artistic freedom.

Francis are outstanding and the finest of the reliefs are the four miracles of St. Anthony. Donatello
was great in handling large numbers of figures (one relief has more than one hundred), which
predicts the construction standards of the High Renaissance.
Donatello was not doing much work the last three years at Padua, the work for the S. Antonio
altar was unpaid for and the Gattamelata monument not placed until 1453. Offers of other places
reached him from Mantua, Modena, Ferrara, and even Naples, but nothing came of them. He
was clearly passing through a crisis that prevented him from working. He was later quoted as
saying that he almost died among those frogs in Padua. quot; In 1456 the Florentine physician
Giovanni Chellini noted he had successfully treated the master for a protracted illness. Donatello
only completed two works between 1450 and 1455, the wooden statue St. John the Baptist and a
figure of Mary Magdalen. Both works show new reality; Donatello s formerly powerful bodies
have become withered and spidery. When the Magdalen was damaged in the 1966 flood at Florence,
restoration work revealed the original painted surface, including realistic flesh tones and golden
highlights throughout the saint s hair.

Describe The Process Of Progress In The United States
What is progress? This is the question that has been raised frequently during our class
discussions in the past few weeks. The truth is the definition of progress varies from person to
person. Progression to some may be set backs to others. The New England colonies were a major
progression for the settlers that escaped religious prosecution. There, they flourished in a new
land. The Native Americans might not have seen this as progress though, because the settlers
were taking over their land. The same could be said for the word, development . For the sake of
this essay, my definition will be, the process of growth. Just like progress, it has an ambiguous
definition that can have good or bad consequences. The land and the people in North America
experienced a lot of growth once the European settlers decided to make the New World their
permanent home with the founding of Jamestown in 1607. During the colonial period through the
19th century, humans were the most important factor in the development of the United States. The
people living through these periods helped develop the land we stand on today through the clearing
of land, the huntingof animals, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

new world. All the resources they would ever need were at their feet. After the foundation of
Jamestown in 1607, the Industrial Revolution happened merely a hundred and fifty three years

Narcissism In Social Work
Published
There are many business issues we all face in the work place today. One of those that I can
personally relate to my professional work life is narcissism. Stephen Robbins defines narcissism
as being the tendency to be arrogant, have a grandiose sense of self importance, require excessive
admiration, and have a sense of entitlement. (Robbins, 2009, p. 113) We have one employee who
has the attitude of narcissism. He is very arrogant and thinks that he knows everything about
anything. This would be fine if he actually did. However, we are an electrical company. Meaning
we work very closely with electricity, which is highly dangerous if you do not know 100% what
you are doing. It makes it very difficult to work with someone like this. They make their co
workers feel belittled and they are less effective at the job. Narcissisms are very arrogant in the fact
that they do not care about their co workers feelings. In the article Narcissism and Emotional
Contagion , Writer Anna Czarna states that after much research, narcissists are less likely to catch...

Hurricane Ima Reflection
Millions of Floridians evacuated up north during Hurricane Irma but I was one of the few that
stayed behind. Since I work for Residential Life I stayed behind as an essential personnel, helping
over 600 students take shelter in Parkview Hall and keep calm during the hurricane. Overall, the
week of the hurricane was one of the most challenging weeks I think I have ever experienced. It s
so unfortunate how Hurricane Irma affected so many homes, businesses and lives. I am extremely
grateful to be safe and sound. In my first year as a graduate student, I witnessed history which is
something I learned a lot from.
On Friday, September 8th the Residential Life staff got together for a meeting, that included
Graduate Assistants, Residence Life Coordinators, Associate Directors, the Assistant Director, the
Director of Housing and the Director of Residential Life. In addition, FIU police department
officers were in the meeting. When I arrived to the meeting we received the news that we were
evacuating to Parkview Hall. We had two previous meetings during that week to talk about
Hurricane Irma, but the plan was always to shelter in place which meant residents had to stay in
their bedrooms and could not leave their residential hall. However, this time around, Hurricane
Irma turned into a category 5 and was headed in our direction which meant we had to evacuate to
the safest residential hall on campus which is the west side of Parkview Hall. During the meeting

Ways Of Classifying Superheroes
If someone is asked which superhero they d like to be, they might pick one in a few seconds.
Picking which superhero or even having one superpower is an important milestone in someone s
life. There are many ways to classify a superhero; what their powers are, if they wear capes or not,
pre or post comic movies, and how they became a superhero. The most important part is the
categories of superpowers. It s one of the various ways to decide which superhero to be.
Classifying superheroes by superpowers makes it easier to pick. The first type of superpower is
one which changes your appearance as a consequence. The Hulk, and the Thing, both from Marvel,
are a part of this type. They must transform into giant creatures to have their superpower. The Hulk
and the Thing both have super strength but the Hulk has to be big and green, while the Thing is

Write A Short Story Of A Story
I couldn t sleep and I wasn t going to be able to sleep. I was an insomniac despite my parents
telling me I just wanted to be up late at night. Please. No one wants to be awake at 4:30 in the
morning. But I tossed and turned anyway, trying desperately to get my body to rest. Eventually
I decided to give up and position myself on a chair facing my window. I tried to do this when I
couldn t sleep because it was peaceful outside and sometimes I relaxed so much I fell asleep.
Other times I just watched the sun rise. My window faced the backyard, a huge plot of land that
housed a miniature forest of sorts. The wind was blowing that night and the leaves on the tree
shook gently, quietly. Every once in a while, I could hear an owl s hoot slice through the silence.
I felt myself starting to nod off when suddenly, all of the leaves shot off the trees. So quickly I
wasn t even sure I saw it. But there they sat, trees with bare branches in the middle of March
when they should ve been green and lush. I tried to get up slowly, to look closer at the window,
but then I saw it. Rising between the tree roots was a shadowy black figure. It wasn t perfectly
formed and seemed to be covered in tiny white dots. Almost like spores. Then I remembered my
dad complaining as he and I ripped mushrooms out of the ground a few weeks before. He had

The Influence of Interest Groups on Public Policy
The Influence of Interest Groups Introduction An interest group is an association of individuals
or organizations who share ideas and/or attitudes and attempt to influence public policy without
trying to be elected. These groups may also be known as advocacy groups, pressure groups, or
lobbying groups. Berman and Murphy (2011) note that American democracy is influenced by a
number of well organized groups designed to persuade government policy toward a particular
outcome. Although many distrust these groups the reality is they are a link between the public
and policy makers. Interest groups are formed for a number of reasons. Economic interest groups
encompass organizations that speak for big business while trade associations may represent entire
industries. Public interest groups, government interest groups, religious interest groups, civil rights
interest groups, ideological interest groups, and single issue interest groups all try to sway their
influence over public policy. Many of these groups make their national headquarters in
Washington D.C. to be near legislators and policy makers (Burstein Linton, 2002). The number of
interest groups in the United States has grown quickly over the last half century. From 1959 to
2001 the Encyclopedia of Associations shows increase from about 6,000 to 22,000 reflecting a
growing diversity in interest groups. While trade groups once dominated the scene this is no longer

Personal Philosophy Reflection Paper
For the past six weeks, I learned how philosophy has influenced the world globally. Learning that
when human beings voice their thoughts with others, they receive a chance to change the world,
especially if one person speaks one on one, one personage can change the world of one body. My
belief in the power of language is strengthened by philosophy. This philosophy course has
encouraged me to share my opinions that are not influenced by other peers or older adults, but to

Before philosophy my views would have leaned a little bit more towards a socialist country, but
now I gratitude freedom in hard work, education, speech, etc.
From my readings to research from Edutopia to literature courses, I have gained a deeper
appreciation for language. In order to understand what one is speaking, a person needs to spend
time listening to one s language and before responding must reflect and analyze what the other
said and how to respond. If a person wants to love another person they have to listen to their
language in order to speak their language, and the core part of learning another language is by
listening. According to Joan Blaska, author of The Power of Language: Speak and Write Using
Person First the language people use shows one s bias and prejudices. Beliefs and another s
performance fall under the influence of language. Blaska claimed the degree to which children are
able to perceive themselves as competent and worthy, or the opposite, is heavily influenced by the
verbalizations used by their teachers...Studies have found that labeling of students does affect
teacher expectations which in turn affects student progress . People have heavy influence with their
words, because of this, our language must be intentional in a way, that breaks down negative
stereotypes and helps one gain empathy as well as seeing others capabilities. Communicating and

Development of Aggression
Aggression is defined as the overt behavior of initiating hostilities or launching attacks. In
psychology, aggression relates to many different types of behavior. Originally, aggressive
behavior is defined as one person is intended to injure or irritate another people. However, it is
difficult to know or to measure if a person s behavior is intentional, especially in children. Hence,
when researchers carry out studies on aggression, the operational definition of aggression is often
referred to the behavior that injures or irritates another person. Aggression behaviors are caused by
many factors, such as social and environmental. People often associate aggression with the nature of
human. There were two arguments on this nature; one... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shaw, Keenan, and Vondra (1994), showed that in the absence of parental responsiveness,
children are likely to develop aggressive behavior at age 3. Bates et al. (1998), also showed that
preschoolers with passive parents tended to have difficulty. By the late childhood, those difficult
preschoolers with passive parents tended to perform aggressive behavior in school.
Reinforcement refers to the contingent response from parents towards children s aggression.
Children who are rewarded for aggression tend to continue such aggressive behavior. On the
other hand, children who are punished for aggression tend to stop such aggressive behavior. A
study if the development and socialization of aggression done by Keenan (2002), revealed a
gender differences on aggression. He demonstrated that rates of aggression were higher in boys
than in girls at the end of the preschool period. Besides, Ross et al. (1990), reported that mothers
of boys were likely to support (reward) their sons when the children were in the peer conflicts.
However, mothers of girls were not likely to support (punishment) their daughters. Hence, the
studies indicate that children are at greater risk of developing aggressive behavior when parents do
not reinforce in an appropriate ways.

Rising Cost Of California Essay
The Rising Cost of Tuition in California State Universities
The cost of tuition for California State Universities has skyrocketed over the last 10 years. It has
forced many students to take out expensive student loans to complete their educational goals, often
times leaving graduating college students steep in debt as they enter the workforce. Some of the
contributing factors that I am going to address are inflation, the rising cost of living and the varying
costs of different educational institutions
Webster s dictionary defines inflation: as a continuing rise in the general price level usually
attributed to an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods and
services. During the last 10 years we have seen and felt the effects of inflation. Services and goods
have gone up in price, but the minimum wage for most Californians stayed the same for a number
of years. Inflation is a key factor that has affected tuition costs in most universities and has helped
contribute to the steady rise. Public and private schools each typically have their own college
inflation rate, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Universities are amongst some of the best in the nation, but they come with a price tag that
unfortunately many cannot afford. Finally the varying universities and the quality of the programs

Diagnosis Of The Community At Risk Essay
Asthma in Oakland California
Description of the Community at Risk Asthma has become a rising issue at hand, especially in
Oakland, California. Asthma is at an all time high in Oakland because of the factories and smog that
surrounds the local communities. After conducting research, I decided to dig deeper in asthma in
Oakland because I wanted to learn more and to see if there was a way to reduce the rise of
asthma. Asthma in Oakland is an issue for all ages, especially the younger ones because their
lungs are still developing. For my term paper, I plan to explore the disproportionate burden of
hazard of the population of air quality in Oakland, California, an area that is impacted by factory
smoke, which can lead to asthma in children who are 18 years of age or younger.
Along with Oakland, I came across research on Alameda County as well and decided to include
some of the findings from the articles. Oakland does not have the best or suitable air quality due
to the large number of the factories that surround the local communities so the quality of air is
affected as well as the individuals who have asthma. The factory exhaust and smoke make it harder
for individuals with asthma to breathe and the poor air quality can send them into an asthma
attack. Also, some of the schools in Oakland need to make sure they are up to date and have proper
measures for children s safety in the schools meaning proper ventilation.

It also shows her trying to save herself from persecution of these people also. She changes the
names of the people within her story, and writes under a different name to save herself from

Harriet Jacobs says, I have not written my experiences in order to attract attention to myself; on
the contrary, it would have been more pleasant to me to have been silent about my own history.
Harriet is correct in this statement she could have sat back and let slavery go on without her
stating what happened to her. She wants to bring awareness in the North about the conflicting
stories Southern s are telling about slavery. Harriet Jacobs preface opens a Pandora s box about
the true integrity of herself as an African American women living in the South during the period of
slavery. In the editor s notes about the author it gives Harriet Jacobs story even more creditability

The Greek And Greek Influence Of The Roman Empire
Another empire would soon take many influences from the Greeks. In Rome, an empire was
beginning to rise. Roman civilization had its roots in Hellenistic culture because they idolized them.
They borrowed and enhanced upon the Greek intellectual accomplishments. As the empire

These effects reached from China, India, the Middle East, and some portions of Africa. As different
regions adopted new aspects of life, they further implement that into their culture. Then the as the
culture grows, it grows with the influences adopted form that of the Romans who borrowed it form
the Greeks. Similarly, with the Romans and Macedonians their conquest and implementation of
their culture was the main source of the spread of Hellenistic culture. However the combination of
controlling more regions and being more involved with global trade, the Romans were able to
further expand Greek influence than those before them. Soon the Roman Empire began to decline
and an even more impactful implementation of Greek culture began to arise in a region to the east.
As the Roman Empire fell and small Kingdoms began to arise throughout Europe, in a different
region of the world, an intellectual revolution began and flourished. During a period between the
eighth and ninth centuries, the Islamic world of the Middle East Experienced its Golden Age .
This was a period of advancements in the sciences, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine. The
main source contributed to these advancements is from the Greeks. However this Golden Age may
have been delayed for many years if not for a man named Mamun. Mamun was a Caliph who would

Problems In What s Eating Gilbert Grape
After watching What s Eating Gilbert Grape it s clear that Gilbert has a lot of problems and
things on his mind at all times. Most of Gilbert s problems come from his family. So this begs the
question, who or what exactly is eating Gilbert Grape?
To start, the least significant of Gilbert s problems was his sister Amy. At the start of the movie
Gilbert says Amy was their mother, since she made all of the meals and took care of the family.
Amy doesn t interfere with Gilbert during the movie.
Ellen was slightly more of problem than her sister. Towards the start of the movie we see Arnie
try and climb the water tower and Amy toss him off the ladder and making him bleed in the
process. Also Gilbert tried to run her over after she gave him ... Show more content on

There are several reasons for this. One is that Gilbert is the only person who takes care of Arnie.
Another reason is Arnie s obsession of trying to climb the town s water tower. At the beginning
of the movie we see Arnie trying to climb the tower only getting half way up the ladder when
Gilbert gets him down. Also during Gilbert and Becky s talks Arnie runs off and successful
climbs the tower, which gets him arrested and taken to jail. Another example for Arine is the day
before his birthday, we see Amy making a cake which after running around the house Arnie
bumps into Amy thus making her drop the cake and making Gilbert go get a new cake from
FoodLand. When he leaves the store he is greeted by his boss from Lamson s Grocery who
doesn t like FoodLand. At home, Gilbert puts the new cake in the fridge and tells Arine not to eat
it. While blowing up balloons, Gilbert looks towards the kitchen where he sees Arine eating the
new cake. When his sisters see what Arine is doing, they start to give up on Arnie s birthday party.
Gilbert, who is now outraged, forces Arine upstairs to take a bath. After not cooperating Gilbert hits
him several times. Noticing he broke his policy, nobody touched Arine , Gilbert runs off into the
night, followed by Arine and his

How Did Carrie Chapman Catt Impact Society
Carrie Chapman Catt
In the adjustment of the new order of things, we women demand an equal voice; we shall accept
nothing less. These are the words of Carrie Chapman Catt, an american feminist in the 1900 s.
She had a powerful voice that made a huge impact on the way women are treated today s society.
She changed the way women of today are viewed. Her voice made us equal, it made us superior to
men.
In the 1900 s women didn t have the same rights as men, we didn t have the right to vote. One
voice was all we needed to change the way men viewed women and Carrie Chapman Catt was that
one voice. Carrie was a women s rights activist, she only wanted to have equality. Carrie led the
Women s rights movement for 25 years. She was the leader of the National American Women s
Suffrage Association. The National American Women s Suffrage Association was a group of
women that fought for the rights of women, specifically voting rights. When ... Show more content

They say she campaigned but she only campaigned for women s rights. Contrary to what
everyone believes Carrie was more for equality between genders. She held elections voting for
women s rights but the women couldn t vote half the time. She had meetings with women on
ways to gain rights. Carrie set up the Mississippi Valley conference to give women a chance to
meet and discuss new ideas together. Carrie wanted peace and to bring everyone together, she
didn t want us to have a label of it s because you re a women.
Carrie had that one voice, the voice of a motivated woman. She fought for peace and equality for
women. Without the voice of Carrie Chapman Catt we wouldn t have the rights we have today.
We wouldn t be able to vote and we would be compared to men every second of everyday. She had
a powerful voice that changed everything. If is wasn t for Carrie we would still have the rights we
had in the 1900 s and everything would be different, wouldn t

Transpiration and Leaf Resistance Essay
Transpiration and Leaf Resistance
By: Bernina Berber
Introduction Transpiration is a part of the water cycle process, and it is the loss of water vapor
from parts of the plants. It is a process similar to evaporation. Evaporation and diffusion cause the
plant tissue to have negative water potential. If you were to compare transpiration it would be like
saying it is close to sweating (but in plants), especially in leaves but also in stems, flowers and
roots. Stomata are dots with openings on top of the leaves surfaces, which in many plants have
numerous on the undersides of the foliage. The stomas are boarded by guard cells that open and
close the pore. Leaf transpiration happens through stomata, it is considered as a necessary need ...

We determined the relative humidityof the air with a psychrometer.
Materials and Methods Citrus leaves come from a very mature orange tree that is located on our
campus; of course they were chosen from a branch so not much damage was done to the tree.
Once taken from the branch it was wrapped with parafilm, where it remained throughout the
entire experiment. The segment was placed in a plastic bag with a moist paper towel and
returned to lab rapidly. We measured the first weights when we returned to the lab. The weights
were recorded every 30 seconds for 10 minutes and every 5 minutes for 35 minutes after that.
During this time one of the other lab partners (we were in groups of four) measured the relative
humidity of the air with a psychrometer. Measured temperature was 25В° C and a vapor pressure
of 3.165 kPa for the dry bulb. A temperature of 13В° C (55.4В° F) and a vapor pressure of
depression of 0.682 kPa was found for the wet bulb. We were able to do this by a data table that
was already provided for us. The equation RH = [ kPa (depress) / kPa (dry)] was used to
determine the relative humidity of 21.5 %. The area of the leaves was found by cutting out paper
tracings of all four leaves after the 45 minute weight measurement period. The tracings were then
weighed and the total weight was compared to values on standard curve, which was also provided

  • 2. The Negative Effects Of Animal Testing Animal testing has been around since 500 BC starting with dissecting animals in ancient greece. French animal testers believed that animals were automata and could not feel pain or emotions. There was no public objections to animal testing until the 19th century when there was an increase of adopting domestic pets. Nowadays public opinion is split down the middle on whether or not animals should be tested on. The animalsare generally tested on for cosmetics, health, commercial, biomedical, space and military purposes. People for animal testingthink of it as a way to save human and animal lives, and that there is no other way to get this good of data. They also believe that the strict rules prevent any mistreatment of the animals.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With only using petri dishes scientists are not able to find all the affects, for example loss in eyesight can not be tested with only using it on tissue sample(Kara Rogers). Animal testing benefits the animals themselves too. The American Veterinary Medical Association actually supports animal testing, in many cases the tests on animals have saved many species from becoming extinct like the california condor, and the tamarins(American Association). People opposed to animal testing will say that it is inhumane and cruel. Animals in the tests are said to be force feed, and forced inhalation, they also are forced to have cosmetics dropped into their eyes to see the outcome. The US Department of agriculture said that around 97,123 animals in 2010 suffered during testing, and were not given antithetic. We can now test in other ways that do not include animals, like in vitro testing. We can also use human volunteers, and only use enough that it does not severely damage them. Pericles allowed the people to feel their city wouldn t be able to be destroyed, but the conceit he had for the city didn t turn out to be true. In the funeral oration there is a visual of continuous strength, courage, unity, fighting, and power that is building this great city called Athens, but then when looking at the plague, you see it break apart. Thucydides mentions the steps and characteristics of the symptoms the plague had on the human body. He describes it so that the reader sees how the plague affected the body, breaking it down organ by organ. This can relate to the breakdown of Athens due to the plague. It takes this one disease to take one human life as well as a strongly built city. He also shows the breakdown of the city by describing the setting, instead of seeing an orderly city with its beautifully established buildings, you d find dead people lying one on top of the other in the streets, sick people at the fountains, mostly signs of death around every corner. The plague began with a high fever to the head and made its way down to the different parts of the body, destroying it along the way, leaving its mark wherever possible. There is another scenario called the Footbridge case where you are in the same situation but in order to save the five people you have to push a fat man off a bridge stopping the trolley. This is very interesting experiment that questions human ethicsand morality. It makes you think whether or not it is morally permissible to turn the trolley. • 16. Objectification In The Sandman The Longing for Beauty In his early 19th century narrative The Sandman, E.T.A. Hoffmann attempts to express the possessiveness and obsessiveness of man that derives from appearance and sexuality. Hoffmann in particular utilizes Klara and Olympia to exemplify Nathaniel s objectification of either of them and his sub conscious ownership over both women. While Hoffmann degrades the standing of the women in the narrative, he subsequently draws on an obsession with outward appearance and beauty that is comparable to the Pygmalion myth. As Pygmalion attempts to have physical possession over the beauty of his sculpture, Hoffmann similarly paints Nathaniel as irrationally pursuing the possession or ownership of beauty through the female characters. Through the symbolic objectification of the female characters and the obsessive sexualized actions of Nathaniel, Hoffmann draws a parallel to the Pygmalion myth as beauty, grace, and sexuality become the apparent paramount measure of value and also reveals the pitfalls created by such obsessions. Throughout The Sandman, E.T.A. Hoffmann seeks to reveal the underlying references to the Pygmalion myth by first portraying the female characters as subordinate, possessive objects that are primarily defined by their beauty and are diminished to the standard of a piece of art. As the narrative progresses, the emphasis on beauty begins to intensify and Hoffmann begins to direct the illustration of the women through their outward appearance. ... • 24. Describe The Process Of Progress In The United States What is progress? This is the question that has been raised frequently during our class discussions in the past few weeks. The truth is the definition of progress varies from person to person. Progression to some may be set backs to others. The New England colonies were a major progression for the settlers that escaped religious prosecution. There, they flourished in a new land. The Native Americans might not have seen this as progress though, because the settlers were taking over their land. The same could be said for the word, development . For the sake of this essay, my definition will be, the process of growth. Just like progress, it has an ambiguous definition that can have good or bad consequences. • 25. Narcissism In Social Work Published There are many business issues we all face in the work place today. One of those that I can personally relate to my professional work life is narcissism. Stephen Robbins defines narcissism as being the tendency to be arrogant, have a grandiose sense of self importance, require excessive admiration, and have a sense of entitlement. (Robbins, 2009, p. 113) We have one employee who has the attitude of narcissism. He is very arrogant and thinks that he knows everything about anything. This would be fine if he actually did. However, we are an electrical company. Meaning we work very closely with electricity, which is highly dangerous if you do not know 100% what you are doing. It makes it very difficult to work with someone like this. They make their co workers feel belittled and they are less effective at the job. Narcissisms are very arrogant in the fact that they do not care about their co workers feelings. Since I work for Residential Life I stayed behind as an essential personnel, helping over 600 students take shelter in Parkview Hall and keep calm during the hurricane. Overall, the week of the hurricane was one of the most challenging weeks I think I have ever experienced. It s so unfortunate how Hurricane Irma affected so many homes, businesses and lives. I am extremely grateful to be safe and sound. In my first year as a graduate student, I witnessed history which is something I learned a lot from. On Friday, September 8th the Residential Life staff got together for a meeting, that included Graduate Assistants, Residence Life Coordinators, Associate Directors, the Assistant Director, the Director of Housing and the Director of Residential Life. In addition, FIU police department officers were in the meeting. When I arrived to the meeting we received the news that we were evacuating to Parkview Hall. We had two previous meetings during that week to talk about Hurricane Irma, but the plan was always to shelter in place which meant residents had to stay in their bedrooms and could not leave their residential hall. However, this time around, Hurricane Irma turned into a category 5 and was headed in our direction which meant we had to evacuate to the safest residential hall on campus which is the west side of Parkview Hall. Picking which superhero or even having one superpower is an important milestone in someone s life. The most important part is the categories of superpowers. It s one of the various ways to decide which superhero to be. Classifying superheroes by superpowers makes it easier to pick. No one wants to be awake at 4:30 in the morning. But I tossed and turned anyway, trying desperately to get my body to rest. Eventually I decided to give up and position myself on a chair facing my window. I tried to do this when I couldn t sleep because it was peaceful outside and sometimes I relaxed so much I fell asleep. Other times I just watched the sun rise. My window faced the backyard, a huge plot of land that housed a miniature forest of sorts. The wind was blowing that night and the leaves on the tree shook gently, quietly. Every once in a while, I could hear an owl s hoot slice through the silence. I felt myself starting to nod off when suddenly, all of the leaves shot off the trees. So quickly I wasn t even sure I saw it. But there they sat, trees with bare branches in the middle of March when they should ve been green and lush. I tried to get up slowly, to look closer at the window, but then I saw it. Rising between the tree roots was a shadowy black figure. • 29. The Influence of Interest Groups on Public Policy The Influence of Interest Groups Introduction An interest group is an association of individuals or organizations who share ideas and/or attitudes and attempt to influence public policy without trying to be elected. These groups may also be known as advocacy groups, pressure groups, or lobbying groups. Berman and Murphy (2011) note that American democracy is influenced by a number of well organized groups designed to persuade government policy toward a particular outcome. Although many distrust these groups the reality is they are a link between the public and policy makers. Interest groups are formed for a number of reasons. Economic interest groups encompass organizations that speak for big business while trade associations may represent entire industries. Public interest groups, government interest groups, religious interest groups, civil rights interest groups, ideological interest groups, and single issue interest groups all try to sway their influence over public policy. Many of these groups make their national headquarters in Washington D.C. to be near legislators and policy makers (Burstein Linton, 2002). The number of interest groups in the United States has grown quickly over the last half century. From 1959 to 2001 the Encyclopedia of Associations shows increase from about 6,000 to 22,000 reflecting a growing diversity in interest groups. Transpiration and Leaf Resistance Essay Transpiration and Leaf Resistance By: Bernina Berber Introduction Transpiration is a part of the water cycle process, and it is the loss of water vapor from parts of the plants. It is a process similar to evaporation. Evaporation and diffusion cause the plant tissue to have negative water potential. If you were to compare transpiration it would be like saying it is close to sweating (but in plants), especially in leaves but also in stems, flowers and roots. Stomata are dots with openings on top of the leaves surfaces, which in many plants have numerous on the undersides of the foliage. The stomas are boarded by guard cells that open and close the pore. Leaf transpiration happens through stomata, it is considered as a necessary need ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We determined the relative humidityof the air with a psychrometer. Materials and Methods Citrus leaves come from a very mature orange tree that is located on our campus; of course they were chosen from a branch so not much damage was done to the tree. Once taken from the branch it was wrapped with parafilm, where it remained throughout the entire experiment. The segment was placed in a plastic bag with a moist paper towel and returned to lab rapidly. We measured the first weights when we returned to the lab. The weights were recorded every 30 seconds for 10 minutes and every 5 minutes for 35 minutes after that. During this time one of the other lab partners (we were in groups of four) measured the relative humidity of the air with a psychrometer. Measured temperature was 25В° C and a vapor pressure of 3.165 kPa for the dry bulb. A temperature of 13В° C (55.4В° F) and a vapor pressure of depression of 0.682 kPa was found for the wet bulb. We were able to do this by a data table that was already provided for us. The equation RH = [ kPa (depress) / kPa (dry)] was used to determine the relative humidity of 21.5 %. The area of the leaves was found by cutting out paper tracings of all four leaves after the 45 minute weight measurement period. The tracings were then weighed and the total weight was compared to values on standard curve, which was also provided ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
