Blaising Pascal s Wager Argument
Blaise Pascal was a French scientist, philosophe, and mathematician during the early 1600 s. He made
many contributions to science and math. In 1653, Pascal s conversion to Catholicism made him more
passionate about religious matters. In one of his famous works, Pensées (Thoughts), he talks about a
theory on the belief of god using what is called Pascal s Wager as support. To sum up the argument,
Pascal claims that if we do a cost benefit analysis on whether to believe God or not, it is more
reasonable to get ourselves to believe that god exists, regardless of whether we have good evidence for
that belief. From this, Pascal s argument is unsound and to support this claim, this paper will explain
and evaluate Pascal s Wager argument using the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
William K. Clifford was a British philosopher and mathematician in the late 1800 s. In 1877, he wrote
The Ethics of Belief with the main points being it is immoral to form a new belief and believe in it if
there is not enough evidence to support it or believe in something that already exists but ignoring the
logic and reason that goes behind it and consistently believing in something even though it harms you.
These can also be used for Clifford s objections to Pascal s argument. Clifford uses an example of a
ship owner who owns a ship that is in need of repairs. But he chooses not to do anything because he
believes in his ship that has made many voyages to and back safely. So he begins to sincerely believe
that the ship is perfectly fine. Although, there is evidence that the ship is clearly not safe, the owner
still lets passengers on and lets the ship set sail. This has to do with Pascal s argument because even
though you might believe in the existence of something that might be good in the future, it is not
genuine belief. Also, Pascal says that upon the belief in god you are also granted entrance to heaven
while if you do not believe in the existence of god then you are going to hell. If this were true, Clifford
would argue that there is no sufficient evidence that proves the existence of these places therefore it is

Machiavelli The Prince Research Paper
Machiavelli on Principalities and Republics
Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469 1527) is one of history s most renowned political theorists.
Truly a Renaissance Man , he excelled in many disciplines and was an avid scholar of the ancients, but
his most enduring legacy has been his political theories, particularly those outlined in The Prince.
Popular culture, however, has a skewed perception of Machiavelli s own personal political ideals.
Although Machiavelli s The Prince discusses governance of a principality from the point of view of
the prince, his longer work, The Discourses, extolls the virtues of republics and provides a detailed
analysis of the republics of Ancient Italy compared to modern Italian republics and more closely ...

Although he does say that these princes have achieved their power and status through immoral means,
he also states that whether or not they are justified depends on whether cruelty be well or badly used.
Well used are those cruelties (if it is permitted to speak well of evil) that are carried out in a single
stroke, done out of necessity to protect oneself, and are not continued but are instead converted into
the greatest possible benefits for the subjects (Machiavelli, 106). He indicates that often times the
prince, as a ruler of his people, cannot make the same choices that would be considered moral for a
normal person. As a ruler, he must consider the good of all of the people, and in doing so must
sometimes choose the route which on the surface appears to be immoral and evil, but will in theory
create the most good for his people while also maintaining or bolstering the prince s power over the
people.
In spite of these statements, not all of his instructions are as unethical as his critics have made them
out to be. Later, in Chapter IX, he states that a prince must have the friendship of the common people;
otherwise he will have no support in times of adversity (109). It is out of pragmatism, and not
morality, that he makes this assertion. The good will and well being of the people are conducive to
maintaining order and may help preserve the prince s position of power. First and foremost, however,
is that preservation of power for the

Pullman Strike Essay
The Pullman Strike was a disturbing event in Illinois history. It occurred because of the way George
Mortimer Pullman, founder and president of the Pullman Palace Car Company, treated his workers.
Organized in 1867, the company manufactured sleeping cars and operated them under contract to the
railroads
The Pullman Palace Car Company, a manufacturer of railroad cars cut the already low wages of its
workers by about 25 percent, but didn t introduce corresponding reductions in rents and other charges
at Pullman s company town near Chicago, where most Pullman workers lived. In result of this many
worked and their families faced starvation. A large section of workers tried to present their problems
about low wages, poor living conditions, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the ARU was not technically involved in the Pullman workers decision to strike, union
officials had been in Pullman and at the meeting at which the strike vote was taken, and Pullman
workers undoubtedly believed that the ARU would back them. A great deal of sympathy existed in
Chicago and elsewhere for the Pullman workers, who were seen as common men and women
tyrannized by an abusive employer and landlord. One plan was to refuse to hitch Pullman cars to
trains and to unhitch those that were already attached. Another idea was a boycott: ARU members
would refuse to handle Pullman cars or any trains with Pullman cars until the railroads severed their
ties with the Pullman Company. ARU members would refuse to handle Pullman cars or any trains with
Pullman cars until the railroads severed their ties with the Pullman Company. As any success for a
boycott would be the Switchmen who had joined the ARU in large numbers. The ARU s president,
Eugene V. Debs, predicted that, once the switchmen refused to add or remove Pullman cars from
trains, the railroads would fire them and try to replace them with nonunion workers, and that in turn
would lead other union members to walk out in solidarity, thus bringing more and more trains to a

Ethnographic Analysis Of Silicon Valley
Silicon Valley is a space in Northern California, which is a main center for numerous web based
corporations, high tech manufacturing, and innovators. It is a high expense area to live in therefore is
one of the most expensive areas in the United States. The ethnographic subject is a woman who is a
computer engineer uses the space to commute and works in the technology industry. In a positive
outlook she is creating new space for women by encouraging other women to join this particular site
just by having her body being present there, reconstructing the space with more gender balance and

Analyzing different forensic pathologist daily journal, I found it really fascinated what exactly they
are doing. Pathologist are the ones who tend to further expand a criminal investigation through all the
multiple testing. They will run DNA test and bone test throughout the whole day. Most forensic
pathologist have a system when it comes to figuring out the cause of death. Typically, the pathologist
will look for evidence to indicate the cause of death like a cut womb. After they will start running
DNA test. In some cases pathologists will test blood and tissue to identify the person. Furthermore,
pathologists spend most of their time running test in lab. Also, pathologist are able to identify the

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Scaffolds
As previously defined, a composite material consists of two or more materials where polymers are
used as matrix materials usually. These materials behave together to produce the best properties of the
scaffold, duplicating the same composite features of bone. In particular, polymer based composite
scaffolds may mimic the structure of natural bone which is mainly made of HA and collagen. Showing
better osteoconductivity, HA can be considered the inorganic reinforcing phase of the composite
scaffold, while polymers such as PCL, PLLA, PGA, PLGA function as the organic matrix. Bioactive
phases creating reinforcement in the polymer based composite can also change the degradation
behavior. Composite scaffolds made of polymer reinforced with HA seem to be promising substrates
for bone tissue engineering because of their outstanding mechanical properties and osteoconductivity.

The effective synergic role of  TCP bioactive particles and PLA fibers on the morphology and
mechanical behavior of the final composite scaffold was assessed, as well as the interaction between
the ceramic phase and the highly organized fiber reinforced polymeric structure (60).
The integration of biodegradable PLA fibers into the PCL matrix allows a mechanical response that is
ideal to maintain the spaces required for cellular in growth and matrix production. The addition of
bioactive  TCP particles, through a hardening reaction, generates needle like crystals of calcium
deficient hydroxyapatite similar to natural bone apatite, which interact with the fiber reinforced
polymer. This interaction strongly enhances the mechanical response in compression by up to an order
of magnitude

Nursing Care Concepts
Define and Describe the Key Concepts of Care.
This essay covers the Key concepts of care. In 2013 the Francis report highlighted the need for student
nurses to test and experience their values and levels of care and compassion, and whilst it is seen that
the failures highlighted in the report go further than a lost compassion of nursing, this exercise is to
look at the key concepts of care and the principles of the 6 Cs (Care, Compassion, Courage,
Communication, Competence and Commitment) which have been identified as fundamental values,
although not the only ones as nurses have other core values such as organisational, professional and
NHS values to work to. I have selected one of the 6 Cs (communication) for a more detailed
description from which I will then provide as requested in my brief an example specific to its
application in a particular service. The area I have selected to apply this to, is Dementia.
The nature of the interrelation of care and nursing has been recognised by theorists over several
decades internationally, back in 2002 caring both as a natural attribute of being human and the core of
nursing was identified by Sister Simone Roach of Canada. Sister Simone Roach was responsible for a
similar set of the 6Cs to the ones we recognise today.
Several reports of poor care arose in 2009 regarding Mid Staffordshire hospital which concluded that
patients needed to be protected from harm, patients had been subject to unacceptable risk of harm and
that patients had failed to be treated in the appropriate way. The Francis report was commissioned to
look into the failings and examine why nurses failed to treat patients appropriately, stemming from the
Francis report came 209 recommendations. In 2012 the DH publication Compassion in Practice:
Nursing Midwifery and Care Staff Our vision and strategy Cummings Bennett (2012). included the 6
Cs. Reports from the Winterbourne View Hospital (DH 2012) and the Mid Staffordshire NHS
Foundation trust (Francis 2013) reported of the need to improve the care culture after highlighting a
lack of compassion.
In 2013 the government announced a three year

Black Men And Public Places Essay
Misunderstandings happen all the time, but how one handles those misunderstandings tells a lot about
their character and who they really are as a person. Sometimes misunderstandings are a result of
someone stereotyping because of a race, religion or even simple actions. This issue is apparent in
Black Men and Public Places . A graduate student at University of Chicago as endured these issues,
but has found ways around them. In today s age many people assume the worst without knowing the
person first hand and or their actual intentions. The opening sentence states My first victim , I feel as
though the word victim has a very derogatory sound to it, but the reader finds out later that it s just a
lady whom happens to be walking in front of the large black man. Being a small somewhat vulnerable
female I have done the same thing when running, I see someone behind me who I don t know, but I
think seems a bit odd I run faster to safety without actually knowing his or her actual intentions. The

was locking their doors when he would walk by, and all he was doing was on a walk. It is truly sad
how some people may look a little different or not be perfect and everyone immediately assumes the
worst. It is even sadder that law enforcement does the same thing, and the person they feel is in the
wrong is forced to try and stay calm and defend themselves for doing nothing. He however found
ways to make seem pleasant to avoid others being so afraid of him. By simply whistling classical

Ground Hog
Holiday feature: How Senior Care Businesses Can Help Families Understand the Changes in the
Aging Process Ground hog day is February second. We at CF Consulting Inc. celebrate ground hog
day because it resonates with what our industry is all about. Folklore has it, that if it is cloudy when a
groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then the spring season will arrive early, sometime
before the vernal equinox; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat
back into its den, and winter weather will persist for six more weeks. If we analyze the tale, the
ground hog is going through a period of changing seasons. He is aware of the change and is prepared

However, we must keep in mind that it is ultimately the customer s decision. We must never impede
upon the patients rights even if we may feel like it is in their best interests. As seasons change so does
people. We in the senior care industry see change often; As patients age and their conditions worsen.
Seeing so many patients go through their final stage of life we may become insensitive to the patient s
feelings. We must try to remain mindful of the sensitivity of their situation. The caregiver patient
relationship is one that requires trust. Kindness, genuine compassion and patience are the best ways to
build caregiver patient trust. We have realized that, that trust must be present for a patient to commit
fully. Senior Care businesses play a vital role in the lives of the elderly and their families. Service
providers support families as they go through periods of distress, uncertainty and change. Through the
specialized services that we in the senior care industry provide, we are able to lessen the negative
effects of these changes. Most of all, we bring understanding, comfort and fulfillment to our patients

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
Living in the United States as an international student, one of the notable things for me was the
remarkable number of obese people or I d rather say people above average weight. Counted among the
people above average weight back home, I was surprised when people considered me slim here. I
came to a conclusion that the concept of relativity is to blame for this. This thing clearly suggests the
growing problem of obesity in the United States which I have been able to observe first handedly for
quite a long time now. Not only my personal observation and experience, but even the statistics show
that the problem of obesity in the United States is at an alarming state. Among the respondents in
Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) conducted by CDC, 28.1% were obese. State
specific obesity ranged from 20.5% in Colorado to 34.7% in Louisiana. While some people might
blame their genes for obesity, I believe that lifestyle is the main cause of obesity. With the
advancement of technology, people have become far too sophisticated, mainly in the developed
country. And that counts for the fact that obesity is prevalent mostly among the developed countries
including the United States of course. For instance, most of the families including mine in Nepal do
not own a washing machine. So, the effort that people put on washing their own clothes instead of just
throwing them into a machine and pushing a button actually helps to burn some calories. Also,
everyone does not

Lysistrata Analysis Essay
Lysistrata is a tale which is centered around an Athenian woman named Lysistrata and her comrades
who have taken control of the Acropolis in Athens. Lysistrata explains to the old men how the women
have seized the Acropolis to keep men from using the money to make war and to keep dishonest
officials from stealing the money. The opening scene of Lysistrata enacts the stereotypical and
traditional characterization of women in Greece and also distances Lysistrata from this overused
expression, housewife character. The audience is met with a woman, Lysistrata, who is furious with
the other women from her country because they have not come to discuss war with her. The basic

The old men protest how the women they have nourished all these years have turned against them and

carrying pitchers of water which they will pour over the fires which the men have set. The old men
and old women trade insults, but the women will not back down, and they empty their water over the
heads of the old men. When the magistrate arrives, he tells the men the women s behavior is the result
of the men spoiling their women and treating them with gentleness when they do not deserve to be
cherished. The magistrate orders the men to force open the doors, but he moves to a safe distance to
watch.
When the doors are forced open, Lysistrata emerges. The magistrate orders her arrested, but the
policeman is too intimidated by Lysistrata to arrest her. The other women join Lysistrata in defying the
policemen, who are too cowed to follow the magistrate s orders to seize the women. The magistrate
responds to the women s actions with a claim, they shall never lose to women and the newly brave
police attack the women, but they are soon beaten off and in retreat. The women say they can
administer the money, since they are used to administering the household money. Lysistrata also tells
the magistrate how the women have been patient while the men got ready for the war and refused to

Freshmen And Senior Participation At University Level Courses
In this study, there is an overall focus on both freshmen and senior participation in university level
courses. Does the seniority of students in universities effect their overall rate of success in one
hundred level courses? Therefore, are seniors less engaged than freshmen in these classes, and what is
effecting their success? Throughout this process, participants were observed and later seen in
interviews and focus groups to scope out and answer the hypothesis created for this study. Seniors
who are taking one hundred level courses will study less and be less engaged than freshmen, causing
them to do poorly in the class. This study was conducted to better understand the different constraints
that these two classes experience during their time at a university. Are seniors actually less engaged
than freshmen or is it simply an error in judgement?
During this process it is important to note that the students involved in participant observation were
not aware they were being studied. This was meant to keep a nonreactive research environment rather
than a reactive research environment. Not wanting the students to change their overall demeanor, it
would better the overall analysis. However, in both the interview and focus group conducted it was a
reactive environment which could alter the overall success of this analysis. First off, the focus group
conducted was done by another researcher and unfortunately yielded little results. Unlike the focus
group, the interview and

Watchmen takes place in an alternate America of 1985, and thanks to the Keene Act of 1977 costumed
heroes are no longer allowed to save the lives of distressed civilians, help those in need...etc. Well they
re at least not allowed to do it in costumes under the name of The Night Owl , Ozymandias , Hooded
Justice , The Comedian , and the first character introduced Rorschach. Rorschach is the only one left
of the masked vigilantes(illegally or not employed by the government) , and compared to the other
characters in the story is very complex, and very different from everyone else. Rorschach wasn t
always Rorschach he was born Walter Joseph Kovacs. Rorschach didn t have an easy life growing up,
his mother was prostitute, and didn t even know who his father was. His mother was abusive, he was
raised in poverty, and as a child he got into an extremely violent fight with two bullies in school.
When the situation and his home life were investigated he was taken into a shelter or Home for
Problem Children . He had a couple of hobbies as a child that got him into the physical state he is now,
and eventually started working at a dress shop. Rorschach then made a mask out of a dress that was

Soccer And Cultural Identity
Most people call me Colby, but on the field i m know as number 40. Soccer has been a part of my life
since I was 3, my 12 years of experience have influenced how I act, what I eat and most aspects of my
life like who I hang out with and what I dislike. In the United states especially, sports are a huge part
of everyone s cultural identity. With all this in mind I would call my cultural identity a soccer game. It
can change in a blink of the eye but is consistent through life.My family is like the other players,
education is like the field and my hobbies are like the ball.
Just like a game of soccer you have to depend on your teammates, I depend on my family just like my
teammates. Everyone has their own family traditions or gatherings but our family is a little different.
Although we celebrate every christian holiday the same as you, the way we do it is unlike anything
you ve seen. As teammates your goal is to go to every practice and game, my family is exactly the
same. Practices are like small acts of kindness like my aunt going to my soccer game. No she didn t
have to, but they always do it as an act of kindness. Practices can go from helping someone move to
go to a game. But the big stuff like the games are the holidays we celebrate. For christmas all 22 of us

The Shame of the Nation by Jonathan Kozol
I. Analysis of the mechanics of the book. If anyone in the United States were asked, What is the best
part about living in this country?, most people would answer equality . The United States is built on
and known for the equality among its citizens and is often referred to as the melting pot . After reading
Jonathan Kozol s, The Shame of the Nation, equality is nonexistent within the schools he has gone to,
and has been employed through. With his travels, expert testimony and personal stories gathered from
the people within the community and schools, he shows the exact opposite of equality. Minority
schools being his main focus, he discusses the inequalities these students endure and truly opens up
your eyes to just how awful these minority schools have it. Jonathan Kozol is successful in his writing
of The Shame of the Nation, and makes himself a voice for these minority schools that are denied of
their voices. The way Kozol chooses to organize his book is very effective. It has a topical way of
organization with a touch of chronological usage through the book. Instead of just starting right into
his points that he strives to make, he begins the book with a little history about himself and how he
ended up in the position of traveling to these different schools. This is extremely necessary to the
book, without it the reader would have no idea as to why he chose to do his observations and how he
came to love what he does. Knowing that he has the experience of teaching

Cracker Barrel Research Paper
Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. was founded in 1969 by Dan Evins in his home town of
Lebanon, Tennessee. The first stores were conjoined with gas stations and strategically placed along
the highway routes to attract travelers. In 1973, the Arab Petroleum Embargo began and by its end in
March 1974, oil prices had dramatically increased from $3 to nearly $12 per barrel. As a result, only
five short years after its inception, Cracker Barrel discontinued its gas stations and concentrated solely
on the restaurant and country store aspects of the store s design. Cracker Barrel proclaims itself to be a
home away from home by sticking with a southern theme. Each restaurant has an old country store
attached that sells items sometimes native to the specific stores locations. The company still maintains
the traditions it has held since the beginning such as fireplaces and placing a peg game on each table.

Persuasive Essay About Running
Running is a physically demanding sport. If you are looking for a way to get in shape, then you should
consider running. Running uses every muscle in your body because you are engaging every aspect of
yourself in the activity. Also, running is a great way to incorporate more cardio into your workout.
Running is not just about getting in shape and staying shape; but running involves many fun activities
and sports.
Some sports that involve running are track and cross country. If you are a competitive individual, then
you should consider track or cross country. If you are a more laid back individual, then you can take
into consideration mud runs or glow/color runs. Those events are always fun, and you get dirty while
participating in the event. Running is a good way to get in shape and have fun doing so, but before
you begin running, you need to know the basics of how to begin.
The first step to begin running is to start with runs/walks. You will start by adding one minute of
running for every four minutes of walking. Gradually increase your running time, so that eventually
you will be running for twice the amount of time that you spend walking. Also, interval running is a
good beginners workout. You start by jogging for one minute, then walking for one minute, then you
should increase the time by one minute each time until you are running for five minutes and walking
for five minutes. The technique you choose should be most comfortable to you.
However, you need to be

Comparing Dunbar s Sympathy And Caged
After the abolition of slavery the South became racially segregated and set many restrictions on
African Americans. In the poem Sympathy by Paul Laurence Dunbar and Caged Bird by Maya
Angelou, these authors portray a caged bird trying to break free from their cage. The authors use this
bird as a metaphor to show the oppression and restrictions against blacks. The symbol of the caged
bird is important because it shows the reality for oppressed black people and reveals their resistance to
racism.
The caged bird in both of these poems are used as metaphors for the oppression against black people
with the blacks being the bird and their oppression being the cage. The bird in Sympathy attempts the

In sympathy, Dunbar says he understands how the caged bird feels. He opens up the poem with this
line I know what the caged bird feels, alas (1). This line makes sense because Dunbar was previously a
slave so he knows the feeling of being trapped with no way out and fighting for his freedom. This bird
is portraying the emotions and the intentions of blacks such as Dunbar and many other. In Sympathy
and Caged Bird both authors portray the birds crying out to others or a higher power. Once again
Dunbar is relating to this bird But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings I know why the caged bird
sings (20 21). This is something else blacks resorted to doing. They didn t believe they could become
free by themselves so they prayed to a higher power for help. Angelou s caged bird cried out also but
it is never stated to who or what. The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but
longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom (15 22).
This stanza is symbolizing the desperation of blacks crying out for help but to no one specific just
anyone who could help. The caged birds are significant because instead of just showing us what they
did to escape suffering, they showed us their true emotions, intentions, and

Cities tend to be the core of the overall night time economy, which constitutes of an, evening
economy, running from 17.00 to 20.00 and a late night economy running from 20.00 until perhaps
04.00 the next morning (Jones et al. 96). According to the article, Media and the Urban Night , written
by Will Straw, western society s transformation to 24 hour media access has impacted the longevity of
urban encounters from day into night (Straw 1). The city seeks out these multimedia companies and
artists for projects to support the demand of innovative concepts in order to make profit of
socialization in the late hours (Straw 2). Moment Factory s method of doing this revolves around the
medium of light, by eliminating the dominant restriction of nighttime living: darkness and
inaccessibility. Historically, the creation of light supported by electricity was the starting point for
nocturnalization and the night time economy as it is an, ... extension of the public realm, a new space
and time of socialization (Lovatt and O Connor 131). The safety and accessibility for night time
events in cities continues to depend on light and is what fully embodies the urban life after sunset,
known as the urban night. (Straw 1). In Montreal, the night is a realm that allows urban creativity to
be expressed in a matter it may market itself to make profit with the aim to attract both local citizens
and tourists (Lecture 25,

Essay on Making a Tissue Box Cover
Adding decorative elements to a home can be done in many ways. One interesting option is to create a
cover for any dull looking tissue box in a living room, kitchen, or other room. The cover for a standard
tissue box can be made from many types of materials. One option is to use construction paper or fabric
which needs to be sewn. However, the cover will need to fold up on each side of the box which is then
fastened at the top. Review a few steps to make a simple tissue box cover.
Fabric Tissue Box Cover
Multiply the height of the tissue box by the width after adding one quarter inch for the seams. Measure
the top of your box and obtain the width and the height. Add one quarter inch to each measurement
and then multiple them together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Add one quarter inch to each measurement. The top also needs to be measured for the width and
length.
Transfer the measurements for the tissue box to sheets of pieces of one quarter inch foam board. Use a
a ruler and utility knife to cut each piece. Trim one eighth of an inch from two side pieces. Cut an oval
shape out of the top section for the tissue.
Apply tacky glue to each edge of the side pieces and glue them together to form a square. The glue
will likely be dry in a couple of minutes. Apply tacky glue around the top and press the top piece in
place.
Determine the color for your tissue box cover and purchase the necessary construction paper. You
have the option for black paper or another color for the base if accessories are being added.
Measure each side of the tissue box to obtain the width and height. Transfer the measurements over
the the paper and cut out five sheets. Attach double sided tape to the back of each black sheet. Place
all the sheets on the sides of the tissue box. The next step is to measure the width and length of the top
of your tissue box. Cut a piece of construction paper and tape it to the top of the tissue box. A pair of
scissors is needed to cut the hole for the tissue.
Decorate the sides of the tissue box by using different piece of colored construction paper. Trace out
an object or different shapes and cut then out with the scissors. Apply small pieces of tape or craft glue

From The Mountain To The Hilltop Analysis
When discussing the Jesuit values in his article From the Mountain to the Hilltop , Fr. Larry Gillick,
S.J., states that there is much darkness in the world, but it is better to light one candle than to curse the
dark . Gillick is discussing the Jesuit value of Forming and Educating Agents for Change. It s better to
be a light for just one person, make the world a better place for just one person, then continuing in the
darkness and the chaos. According to this Jesuit value, the world, a school, a town, a life, should be
better for someone having been there and been educated enough to want to change the culture. When
Fr. Gregory Boyle was driving to a peace talk between two gangs, he was stopped by a female gang
member, Shady, who had

Honey Bee Evolution
Among the so called simpler organisms, the honey bee is one of the few examples of an animal with a
highly evolved social structure, a rich behavioral repertoire, an exquisite navigational system, an
elaborate communication system, and an extraordinary ability to learn colors, shapes, fragrances, and
navigational routes quickly and accurately. All this is accomplished by a brain that weighs less than a
milligram and carries fewer than a million neurons(2). Whether bees can generalize the visual patterns
they see around them, was a big question. For example, the idea of generalization appeared in insect
vision in the 1920s, when bees were first trained simultaneously with several patterns that displayed a
factor in common (e.g. triangularity

Harry Harlow s Article Discovering Love
Discovering Love is an article about the definition of love and the different aspects, such as how it
works and where you get it. Developmental psychologist Harry Harlow is the main contributor to this
study. Harlow was particularly interested in how early life experiences, specifically interaction with
one s mother or primary caregiver, impact an individual s ability to love and be loved by others later in
life. In the 1950 s, Harlow conducted a study using monkeys and surrogate mothers made of artificial
materials. He did various tests with the monkeys in which eight monkeys were assigned to either a
cloth or wire mother. Both surrogate mothers fed their monkeys, provided heat and had the same
shape. The only difference was what they were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One specific study in which Harlow is cited was done by two researchers by the names of Eidelman
and Feldman. They examined how crucial it is that premature infants receive an appropriate amount of
skin to skin contact. Without proper contact, (also called Kangaroo care) premature babies are more at
risk of death and life altering illness. This is quite a recent finding, and it most definitely applies to life
today when it comes to giving all infants the best care possible to fit their needs. Another way that the
study influences life today is how impactful the power of touch really is. When trying to establish a
bond with someone, physical contact could lead the way to an unbreakable emotional bond. But how
much is too much? Everyone has different needs, and Harlow s findings show us that while all living
things are unique, we all have relatively similar things that must be done in order to achieve the
healthiest emotional connection between anyone.
I agree that the Harry Harlow study is entirely relevant to life today, useful, and in no way cruel to the
monkeys involved. It demonstrates the importance of contact comfort

Pros And Cons Of Valentine s Day
February February...there s a lot of things I think about in this month. The first thing I think about is
Valentine s Day, with all the love in the air. Most importantly, the second thing I think about is Black
History. In everybody s mind this is the shortest month of the year, it s about love, and the
appreciation of African Americans. What is Valentine s Day? Valentine s Day is going out your way to
do something for a loved one. But why should people have to really show their love for someone in a
certain month, on a certain day? Love should always be expressed everyday. Valentine s Day was
created by a man named St. Valentine. There are many stories on how this became such a big holiday,
but one story says that he was imprisoned and he wrote the first Valentine to the love of his life
because he was going to die, ending the letter with From your Valentine. Later in life, it became more
about love because people during the middle ages began to realize that during the middle of February
is which the 14th, the birds mating season had beginned which resulted in love. But, I feel that
Valentine s Day has its pros and cons. It is about being loved by someone and being able to express
how you feel towards a loved one. This day is usually men going out their way to do something
special for their significant other. Sometimes it is the women doing something special, but the men are
usually the ones to do something special first. Some people have a really good Valentine s

master s in sociology. He was the director for the A. Philip Randolph Education Fund for nine years.
He then worked as the Assistant Secretary of Labor. Lastly he joined the Lehman Brothers at an
investment banking firm as a senior managing director (Ernest, 2013). Elizabeth Eckford was one of
the most remembered students out of the Little Rock 9. She arrived at Central alone on the morning of
September 4, 1957. All nine students were supposed to meet and go into the school all together but
their meeting place was changed the night before. Her family did not have a phone and Elizabeth
never got the message. When she got dropped off the next morning she was alone. She attempted to
walk onto the campus twice but was turned away by the Arkansas National Guard. She didn t end up
graduating from Central but she was lucky and had taken night courses so she had enough credits to
attend college. She went to Knox College but came back to her hometown to be with her parents. She
ended up getting a Bachelor s in history from Central State University. After college she served in the
army for five years. She worked many jobs during her life. She was a history teacher, welfare worker,
a waitress, an employment interviewer and a military reporter (Elizabeth, 2012).

Comparison Of Racism In American History X And Romper Stero
American History X, directed by Tony Kaye, and Romper Stomper, directed by Geoffrey Wright,
share similar themes, of racism/ extremism, violence and the influence of idols/ gangs on the
impressionable. In both films, the outsiders (Mexicans and Asian immigrants) are terrorised and
beaten by Neo Nazi Skinhead gangs in America (Los Angeles) and Australia (Melbourne). Both texts
are also set in a similar timeframe, this being the 80 s/ 90 s, reflecting the social issues of the era.
Racism and extremism are depicted clearly in both American History X and Romper Stomper,
accentuated through violent and hateful dialogue. Flashbacks are clearly used to establish the creation
and reason for these racist thoughts and extremist behaviour in American History X. These flashbacks
are shown in black and white, symbolising the state of mind the antagonist (Derek) was in. He is
presented as narrow minded, at the height of his ideology and can only see things in right or wrong,
black or white. Once Derek realises and loathes his wrongs, he sees in colour, a clever use of film
techniques used by Kaye. The violence portrayed in both films is also similar in the way that the Neo
Nazi gangs of LA and Melbourne terrorise minorities and believe that Mexican (American History X)
and Vietnamese (Romper Stomper) immigrants are swarming into their western suburbs, buying up
local businesses and crowding out the established residents. This is shown clearly at 35:00 40:19 in

False Christian Teaching
Many people can teach the Gospel, but few can present it in a way of compelling and authentic
manner. Through his teachings to the Ephesians, Ignatius provides beneficial concepts for Christianity
that are crucial for the Church to pursue. He commends the Ephesians to live in unity and communion
with God, respect the authority placed over them, and stray from false teachings. His thought
provoking ideas are absent from believers today and should be more vividly displayed in the lives of
Christians.
For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same
function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others
(New International Version, Romans 12:4 5). Christians ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ignatius praised the Ephesians for staying strong in their faith when false teachers came to cripple
their beliefs. Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep s clothing, but inward they are
ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits (New International Version, Matthew 7:15). It is
difficult when a convincing person attempts to change your hopes and beliefs because they can be so
sly and can twist thoughts. However, sticking to what is true, holy, and pleasing to God is the only
way to dodge the destruction of the Christian mind. False prophets and teachers have no place in the
lives of Christians and should not be able to sway strong beliefs and claims. The Church today is
victim to fictitious instruction and must remain faithful to what they know is true in God the Father.
Ignatius teachings to the Ephesians will ultimately benefit the Church if they are lived out everyday.
He instructed them to live as one in Christ Jesus, to respect the authority over them, and to stray from
false prophets who seek to corrupt their minds. If Christians today began to pursue these ideas, the
world as a whole would benefit greatly because Christ would shine so brightly in and through them.
Ignatius teachings not only left an impact on the Ephesians, but continue to impact the Church as they
are applied to Christians everyday

Amazing Grace Kozol Summary
In an excerpt from the book Amazing Grace:The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation, by
Jonathan Kozol, he talks about people in the South Bronx, one of the most dangerous and diseased
cities in the west, which creates terrible living conditions. Kozol walks around the city with a seven
year old named Cliffie, who guides him and talks about certain places, sometimes making things up,
like how the incinerator burns bodies. After he walks around the city, Kozol talks with Cliffie s mother
in St. Ann s Church about the issues and the better things in the community. The excerpt ends with
Pastor Martha Overall who talks about how one of the founders of the United States, Governor
Morris, is buried beside his wife in the churchyard. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

community is sometimes dangerous.
The addicted people at the Children s Park can t stop doing drugs. Even though they are bad,
volunteers gave out clean needles, so the people doing them won t get sick from other people, which
shows even though drugs are bad, at least people are making them safer.
The dump attracts illegal dumpers, which makes the city become trashy, but Cliffie s mother found
some nice chairs, which she took for her family to use. Cliffie saw many terrible things, but he dreams
about his mother and thinks about her, which keeps him going through the bad living conditions he
has to deal with. There are many terrors on the streets of the South Bronx, but the St. Ann s church
provides a safe place for people to feel protected from the dangers. Many people in the South Bronx

they won t contract diseases from needles that more than one person has used. Everything that is bad,

Jones Blair Case
Problem/Issue
Jones Blair is a paint company headquartered in Dallas, Texas that sells architectural paint. Jones Blair
markets its paint to fifty counties in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and eleven county
Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) metropolitan areas. Jones Blair has branded itself as having a high end paint
product. Increased R D, material, and labor cost have allowed Jones Blair to have the highest price
among competitors in its service area and still obtain a great amount of business. Jones Blair is
focused on providing architectural paint to a market that is fifty percent segmented, which half
consists of do it yourself consumers and the other fifty percent spilt among professional painters and
government contracts. Jones Blair has enjoyed dollar sales rising at an annual rate of four percent over
the past five years. Even though Jones Blair has enjoyed a successful rise in dollar sales, it has seen a
decline in the gallon volumes in DFW areas due to a rise in competition. Jones Blair is aware that it is
approaching the threshold in its prices. Jones Blair is afraid that once the threshold price is reached,
then the decline in volume sales will lead to Jones Blair unsuccessfully meeting its sales margins.
Jones Blair needs to determine how and where to adjust marketing efforts to raise sales volume
amounts in the DFW and Non DFW areas. Jones Blair currently spends approximately three percent of

A Midsummer Night s Dream And A Doll s House
A Midsummer Night s Dream A Doll s House, written by William Shakespeare and Henrik Ibsen
respectively, are plays that have a varying number of themes. These two plays are centuries apart yet,
they share a strikingly similar approaches in regards to the themes that are scattered throughout both
plays. Such themes consists of love and marriage, deceit and honesty and most noticeably the
relationship between men and women. Though they share many of the same thematic elements, their
stories are completely different from one another.
A Midsummer Night s Dream is a play about love. All of its action from the escapades of Lysander,
Demetrius, Hermia, and Helena in the forest, to the argument between Oberon and Titania, to the play
about two lovelorn youths that Bottom and his friends perform at Duke Theseus s marriage to
Hippolyta are motivated by love. But A Midsummer Night s Dream is not a romance, in which the
audience gets caught up in a passionate love affair between two characters. It s a comedy, and because
it s clear from the outset that it s a comedy and that all will turn out happily, rather than try to
overcome the audience with the exquisite and overwhelming passion of love, A Midsummer Night s
Dream invites the audience to laugh at the way the passion of love can make people blind, foolish,
inconstant, and desperate. At various times, the power and passion of love threatens to destroy
friendships, turn men against men and women against women, and through

  • 2. Blaising Pascal s Wager Argument Blaise Pascal was a French scientist, philosophe, and mathematician during the early 1600 s. He made many contributions to science and math. In 1653, Pascal s conversion to Catholicism made him more passionate about religious matters. In one of his famous works, Pensées (Thoughts), he talks about a theory on the belief of god using what is called Pascal s Wager as support. To sum up the argument, Pascal claims that if we do a cost benefit analysis on whether to believe God or not, it is more reasonable to get ourselves to believe that god exists, regardless of whether we have good evidence for that belief. From this, Pascal s argument is unsound and to support this claim, this paper will explain and evaluate Pascal s Wager argument using the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... William K. Clifford was a British philosopher and mathematician in the late 1800 s. In 1877, he wrote The Ethics of Belief with the main points being it is immoral to form a new belief and believe in it if there is not enough evidence to support it or believe in something that already exists but ignoring the logic and reason that goes behind it and consistently believing in something even though it harms you. These can also be used for Clifford s objections to Pascal s argument. Clifford uses an example of a ship owner who owns a ship that is in need of repairs. But he chooses not to do anything because he believes in his ship that has made many voyages to and back safely. So he begins to sincerely believe that the ship is perfectly fine. Although, there is evidence that the ship is clearly not safe, the owner still lets passengers on and lets the ship set sail. This has to do with Pascal s argument because even though you might believe in the existence of something that might be good in the future, it is not genuine belief. Also, Pascal says that upon the belief in god you are also granted entrance to heaven while if you do not believe in the existence of god then you are going to hell. If this were true, Clifford would argue that there is no sufficient evidence that proves the existence of these places therefore it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Machiavelli The Prince Research Paper Machiavelli on Principalities and Republics Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469 1527) is one of history s most renowned political theorists. Truly a Renaissance Man , he excelled in many disciplines and was an avid scholar of the ancients, but his most enduring legacy has been his political theories, particularly those outlined in The Prince. Popular culture, however, has a skewed perception of Machiavelli s own personal political ideals. Although Machiavelli s The Prince discusses governance of a principality from the point of view of the prince, his longer work, The Discourses, extolls the virtues of republics and provides a detailed analysis of the republics of Ancient Italy compared to modern Italian republics and more closely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although he does say that these princes have achieved their power and status through immoral means, he also states that whether or not they are justified depends on whether cruelty be well or badly used. Well used are those cruelties (if it is permitted to speak well of evil) that are carried out in a single stroke, done out of necessity to protect oneself, and are not continued but are instead converted into the greatest possible benefits for the subjects (Machiavelli, 106). He indicates that often times the prince, as a ruler of his people, cannot make the same choices that would be considered moral for a normal person. As a ruler, he must consider the good of all of the people, and in doing so must sometimes choose the route which on the surface appears to be immoral and evil, but will in theory create the most good for his people while also maintaining or bolstering the prince s power over the people. In spite of these statements, not all of his instructions are as unethical as his critics have made them out to be. Later, in Chapter IX, he states that a prince must have the friendship of the common people; otherwise he will have no support in times of adversity (109). It is out of pragmatism, and not morality, that he makes this assertion. The good will and well being of the people are conducive to maintaining order and may help preserve the prince s position of power. First and foremost, however, is that preservation of power for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Pullman Strike Essay The Pullman Strike was a disturbing event in Illinois history. It occurred because of the way George Mortimer Pullman, founder and president of the Pullman Palace Car Company, treated his workers. Organized in 1867, the company manufactured sleeping cars and operated them under contract to the railroads The Pullman Palace Car Company, a manufacturer of railroad cars cut the already low wages of its workers by about 25 percent, but didn t introduce corresponding reductions in rents and other charges at Pullman s company town near Chicago, where most Pullman workers lived. In result of this many worked and their families faced starvation. A large section of workers tried to present their problems about low wages, poor living conditions, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the ARU was not technically involved in the Pullman workers decision to strike, union officials had been in Pullman and at the meeting at which the strike vote was taken, and Pullman workers undoubtedly believed that the ARU would back them. A great deal of sympathy existed in Chicago and elsewhere for the Pullman workers, who were seen as common men and women tyrannized by an abusive employer and landlord. One plan was to refuse to hitch Pullman cars to trains and to unhitch those that were already attached. Another idea was a boycott: ARU members would refuse to handle Pullman cars or any trains with Pullman cars until the railroads severed their ties with the Pullman Company. ARU members would refuse to handle Pullman cars or any trains with Pullman cars until the railroads severed their ties with the Pullman Company. As any success for a boycott would be the Switchmen who had joined the ARU in large numbers. The ARU s president, Eugene V. Debs, predicted that, once the switchmen refused to add or remove Pullman cars from trains, the railroads would fire them and try to replace them with nonunion workers, and that in turn would lead other union members to walk out in solidarity, thus bringing more and more trains to a ... Pathologist are the ones who tend to further expand a criminal investigation through all the multiple testing. They will run DNA test and bone test throughout the whole day. • 7. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Scaffolds As previously defined, a composite material consists of two or more materials where polymers are used as matrix materials usually. These materials behave together to produce the best properties of the scaffold, duplicating the same composite features of bone. In particular, polymer based composite scaffolds may mimic the structure of natural bone which is mainly made of HA and collagen. Showing better osteoconductivity, HA can be considered the inorganic reinforcing phase of the composite scaffold, while polymers such as PCL, PLLA, PGA, PLGA function as the organic matrix. Bioactive phases creating reinforcement in the polymer based composite can also change the degradation behavior. Composite scaffolds made of polymer reinforced with HA seem to be promising substrates for bone tissue engineering because of their outstanding mechanical properties and osteoconductivity. While intensive efforts have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 8. Nursing Care Concepts Define and Describe the Key Concepts of Care. This essay covers the Key concepts of care. In 2013 the Francis report highlighted the need for student nurses to test and experience their values and levels of care and compassion, and whilst it is seen that the failures highlighted in the report go further than a lost compassion of nursing, this exercise is to look at the key concepts of care and the principles of the 6 Cs (Care, Compassion, Courage, Communication, Competence and Commitment) which have been identified as fundamental values, although not the only ones as nurses have other core values such as organisational, professional and NHS values to work to. I have selected one of the 6 Cs (communication) for a more detailed description from which I will then provide as requested in my brief an example specific to its application in a particular service. The area I have selected to apply this to, is Dementia. The nature of the interrelation of care and nursing has been recognised by theorists over several decades internationally, back in 2002 caring both as a natural attribute of being human and the core of nursing was identified by Sister Simone Roach of Canada. Sister Simone Roach was responsible for a similar set of the 6Cs to the ones we recognise today. Several reports of poor care arose in 2009 regarding Mid Staffordshire hospital which concluded that patients needed to be protected from harm, patients had been subject to unacceptable risk of harm and that patients had failed to be treated in the appropriate way. The Francis report was commissioned to look into the failings and examine why nurses failed to treat patients appropriately, stemming from the Francis report came 209 recommendations. In 2012 the DH publication Compassion in Practice: Nursing Midwifery and Care Staff Our vision and strategy Cummings Bennett (2012). included the 6 Cs. Reports from the Winterbourne View Hospital (DH 2012) and the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation trust (Francis 2013) reported of the need to improve the care culture after highlighting a lack of compassion. In 2013 the government announced a three year ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Black Men And Public Places Essay Misunderstandings happen all the time, but how one handles those misunderstandings tells a lot about their character and who they really are as a person. Sometimes misunderstandings are a result of someone stereotyping because of a race, religion or even simple actions. This issue is apparent in Black Men and Public Places . A graduate student at University of Chicago as endured these issues, but has found ways around them. In today s age many people assume the worst without knowing the person first hand and or their actual intentions. The opening sentence states My first victim , I feel as though the word victim has a very derogatory sound to it, but the reader finds out later that it s just a lady whom happens to be walking in front of the large black man. Being a small somewhat vulnerable female I have done the same thing when running, I see someone behind me who I don t know, but I think seems a bit odd I run faster to safety without actually knowing his or her actual intentions. The young yet large black man whom looked a bit scraggly realized he looked similar to what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is even sadder that law enforcement does the same thing, and the person they feel is in the wrong is forced to try and stay calm and defend themselves for doing nothing. He however found ways to make seem pleasant to avoid others being so afraid of him. By simply whistling classical music people were less afraid of him. We at CF Consulting Inc. celebrate ground hog day because it resonates with what our industry is all about. Folklore has it, that if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then the spring season will arrive early, sometime before the vernal equinox; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its den, and winter weather will persist for six more weeks. Seeing so many patients go through their final stage of life we may become insensitive to the patient s feelings. We must try to remain mindful of the sensitivity of their situation. The caregiver patient relationship is one that requires trust. Kindness, genuine compassion and patience are the best ways to build caregiver patient trust. • 12. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Living in the United States as an international student, one of the notable things for me was the remarkable number of obese people or I d rather say people above average weight. Counted among the people above average weight back home, I was surprised when people considered me slim here. I came to a conclusion that the concept of relativity is to blame for this. This thing clearly suggests the growing problem of obesity in the United States which I have been able to observe first handedly for quite a long time now. Not only my personal observation and experience, but even the statistics show that the problem of obesity in the United States is at an alarming state. Among the respondents in Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) conducted by CDC, 28.1% were obese. State specific obesity ranged from 20.5% in Colorado to 34.7% in Louisiana. While some people might blame their genes for obesity, I believe that lifestyle is the main cause of obesity. With the advancement of technology, people have become far too sophisticated, mainly in the developed country. And that counts for the fact that obesity is prevalent mostly among the developed countries including the United States of course. For instance, most of the families including mine in Nepal do not own a washing machine. So, the effort that people put on washing their own clothes instead of just throwing them into a machine and pushing a button actually helps to burn some calories. Also, everyone does not ... Lysistrata explains to the old men how the women have seized the Acropolis to keep men from using the money to make war and to keep dishonest officials from stealing the money. The opening scene of Lysistrata enacts the stereotypical and traditional characterization of women in Greece and also distances Lysistrata from this overused expression, housewife character. The magistrate orders the men to force open the doors, but he moves to a safe distance to watch. When the doors are forced open, Lysistrata emerges. The magistrate orders her arrested, but the policeman is too intimidated by Lysistrata to arrest her. The other women join Lysistrata in defying the policemen, who are too cowed to follow the magistrate s orders to seize the women. The magistrate responds to the women s actions with a claim, they shall never lose to women and the newly brave police attack the women, but they are soon beaten off and in retreat. The women say they can administer the money, since they are used to administering the household money. Lysistrata also tells the magistrate how the women have been patient while the men got ready for the war and refused to listen to any advice. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Freshmen And Senior Participation At University Level Courses In this study, there is an overall focus on both freshmen and senior participation in university level courses. Does the seniority of students in universities effect their overall rate of success in one hundred level courses? Therefore, are seniors less engaged than freshmen in these classes, and what is effecting their success? Throughout this process, participants were observed and later seen in interviews and focus groups to scope out and answer the hypothesis created for this study. Seniors who are taking one hundred level courses will study less and be less engaged than freshmen, causing them to do poorly in the class. This study was conducted to better understand the different constraints that these two classes experience during their time at a university. Are seniors actually less engaged than freshmen or is it simply an error in judgement? During this process it is important to note that the students involved in participant observation were not aware they were being studied. This was meant to keep a nonreactive research environment rather than a reactive research environment. Not wanting the students to change their overall demeanor, it would better the overall analysis. However, in both the interview and focus group conducted it was a reactive environment which could alter the overall success of this analysis. First off, the focus group conducted was done by another researcher and unfortunately yielded little results. Unlike the focus group, the interview and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Soccer has been a part of my life since I was 3, my 12 years of experience have influenced how I act, what I eat and most aspects of my life like who I hang out with and what I dislike. In the United states especially, sports are a huge part of everyone s cultural identity. With all this in mind I would call my cultural identity a soccer game. It can change in a blink of the eye but is consistent through life.My family is like the other players, education is like the field and my hobbies are like the ball. Just like a game of soccer you have to depend on your teammates, I depend on my family just like my teammates. Everyone has their own family traditions or gatherings but our family is a little different. Although we celebrate every christian holiday the same as you, the way we do it is unlike anything you ve seen. As teammates your goal is to go to every practice and game, my family is exactly the same. Practices are like small acts of kindness like my aunt going to my soccer game. No she didn t have to, but they always do it as an act of kindness. Practices can go from helping someone move to go to a game. But the big stuff like the games are the holidays we celebrate. If anyone in the United States were asked, What is the best part about living in this country?, most people would answer equality . The United States is built on and known for the equality among its citizens and is often referred to as the melting pot . After reading Jonathan Kozol s, The Shame of the Nation, equality is nonexistent within the schools he has gone to, and has been employed through. With his travels, expert testimony and personal stories gathered from the people within the community and schools, he shows the exact opposite of equality. Minority schools being his main focus, he discusses the inequalities these students endure and truly opens up your eyes to just how awful these minority schools have it. Jonathan Kozol is successful in his writing of The Shame of the Nation, and makes himself a voice for these minority schools that are denied of their voices. The way Kozol chooses to organize his book is very effective. It has a topical way of organization with a touch of chronological usage through the book. Instead of just starting right into his points that he strives to make, he begins the book with a little history about himself and how he ended up in the position of traveling to these different schools. This is extremely necessary to the book, without it the reader would have no idea as to why he chose to do his observations and how he came to love what he does. The first stores were conjoined with gas stations and strategically placed along the highway routes to attract travelers. In 1973, the Arab Petroleum Embargo began and by its end in March 1974, oil prices had dramatically increased from $3 to nearly $12 per barrel. As a result, only five short years after its inception, Cracker Barrel discontinued its gas stations and concentrated solely on the restaurant and country store aspects of the store s design. Cracker Barrel proclaims itself to be a home away from home by sticking with a southern theme. Each restaurant has an old country store attached that sells items sometimes native to the specific stores locations. Developmental psychologist Harry Harlow is the main contributor to this study. Harlow was particularly interested in how early life experiences, specifically interaction with one s mother or primary caregiver, impact an individual s ability to love and be loved by others later in life. In the 1950 s, Harlow conducted a study using monkeys and surrogate mothers made of artificial materials. This is quite a recent finding, and it most definitely applies to life today when it comes to giving all infants the best care possible to fit their needs. Another way that the study influences life today is how impactful the power of touch really is. When trying to establish a bond with someone, physical contact could lead the way to an unbreakable emotional bond. But how much is too much? Everyone has different needs, and Harlow s findings show us that while all living things are unique, we all have relatively similar things that must be done in order to achieve the healthiest emotional connection between anyone. Most importantly, the second thing I think about is Black History. In everybody s mind this is the shortest month of the year, it s about love, and the appreciation of African Americans. What is Valentine s Day? Valentine s Day is going out your way to do something for a loved one. But why should people have to really show their love for someone in a certain month, on a certain day? Love should always be expressed everyday. Valentine s Day was created by a man named St. Valentine. There are many stories on how this became such a big holiday, but one story says that he was imprisoned and he wrote the first Valentine to the love of his life because he was going to die, ending the letter with From your Valentine. Later in life, it became more about love because people during the middle ages began to realize that during the middle of February is which the 14th, the birds mating season had beginned which resulted in love. But, I feel that Valentine s Day has its pros and cons. It is about being loved by someone and being able to express how you feel towards a loved one. Comparison Of Racism In American History X And Romper Stero American History X, directed by Tony Kaye, and Romper Stomper, directed by Geoffrey Wright, share similar themes, of racism/ extremism, violence and the influence of idols/ gangs on the impressionable. In both films, the outsiders (Mexicans and Asian immigrants) are terrorised and beaten by Neo Nazi Skinhead gangs in America (Los Angeles) and Australia (Melbourne). Both texts are also set in a similar timeframe, this being the 80 s/ 90 s, reflecting the social issues of the era. Racism and extremism are depicted clearly in both American History X and Romper Stomper, accentuated through violent and hateful dialogue. Flashbacks are clearly used to establish the creation and reason for these racist thoughts and extremist behaviour in American History X. These flashbacks are shown in black and white, symbolising the state of mind the antagonist (Derek) was in. He is presented as narrow minded, at the height of his ideology and can only see things in right or wrong, black or white. Once Derek realises and loathes his wrongs, he sees in colour, a clever use of film techniques used by Kaye. The violence portrayed in both films is also similar in the way that the Neo Nazi gangs of LA and Melbourne terrorise minorities and believe that Mexican (American History X) and Vietnamese (Romper Stomper) immigrants are swarming into their western suburbs, buying up local businesses and crowding out the established residents.
