Climate Change: A
Wider Perspective
Climate change refers to significant, long-term changes
in the global climate. The global climate is the connected
system of sun, earth and oceans, wind, rain and snow,
forests, deserts and savannas, and everything people
do, too. Climate change is a long-term change in the
average weather patterns that have come to define
Earth’s local, regional and global climates.
We may experience severe weather disturbances such as
stronger typhoons and heavier rainfalls, resulting in extreme
weather events such as floods and even droughts. It also
increases the spread of tropical diseases, and worse, it can
cause the extinction of some flora and fauna.
Climate change is expected to affect the entire world, but
its impact will not be the same across all regions. Some will
be worse hit than others because of a range of different
threats.

Weather
The word ‘weather’ refers to short period variation in
the atmosphere at a given place. In other words, the
physical state of the atmosphere at a given time
constitutes weather. Weather at any place is defined as
the momentary condition of the atmosphere. It varies
from day to day and place to place.
Weather Elements
1. Air Temperature—the degree of hotness or
coldness of the air
2. Air Pressure—the force of the air above an
area
3. Humidity—a measure of the amount of water
vapor in the air
4. Clouds—a visible mass of tiny water droplets
and/or ice crystals that are above the earth’s
Surface.
Weather Elements
5. Precipitation—any form of water, either liquid
or solid (rain or snow), that falls from clouds
and reaches the ground.
6. Visibility—the greatest distance one can see.
7. Wind—the horizontal movement of air.
Climate Change: A
Wider Perspective
The word climate refers to the condition of the
atmosphere over a long period of time over a large area.
In other words, the long-term average of weather is
climate. The climate differs from region to region and
season to season. Climate determines water potential,
natural vegetation, cropping pattern, land use, housing
and other infrastructure, industrial location, racial
characteristics, etc.
Climatic change has been attributed to both terrestrial and
extra-terrestrial processes. The main factors are:
• Astronomical: Variations in the incoming solar radiation
due to changes in the sun-earth
distance arising from variation in the ellipticity of the orbit
and also changes in the inclination
of the axis.
• Geological: Changes in the disposition of oceans and
continents.
• Anthropogenetic: Changes due to human activities in the
form of deforestation, the release
of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into the
atmosphere, etc
FACTORS AFFECTING
CLIMATE CHANGE
LATITUDE
• The word latitude is from the
Latin, “latus”, which means
“wide.” Latitude is the distance
measured in degrees north
and south of the equator.
Another name for latitude is
parallels because they run at
equal distances and do not
cross one other.

The days and nights
near the equator are
almost equal in length,
while near the poles, the
length of days and nights
varies with season.

ALTITUDE
• Altitude is a distance,
usually in the vertical
or “up” direction,
between a reference
and point of object.
Mt. Kiliminjaro
As the air temperature
decreases as altitude increases.
Baguio City
Why is it that during summer,
many people visit Baguio City?
It has an annual average
temperature of 16 ÂşC. It has an
elevation of 1435 m above sea
level. Baguio City has a lower
temperature and cold climate
than the surrounding areas
because of its high altitude or
elevation. The air temperature
decreases as the altitude
increases.
Why do mountain climbers wear jackets and
thick clothes when they go up the mountain?
The higher the altitude or
elevation, the lower the
temperature. For every 1000-m,
there is a drop of 6.500C. At
higher elevations, the air
molecules are farther apart, thus
making the air less dense.
Lighter air cannot absorb much
heat, making air temperature
lower. Ultimately, the decrease
in air temperature is due to the
decrease in air pressure.
TOPOGRAPHY
It is a study of the
forms and features of
land surfaces. The
topography may
refers to mountain,
valleys, rivers or
craters.
• The area in which the wind blows is called the windward side.
• The air moves down towards the opposite region called the
leeward side.
• The dry region on the leeward side is called a rain shadow.
DISTANCE FROM BODIES OF
WATER
• Places that are near the oceans have a moderate
climate as the body of water regulates the
temperature.
• Because soil heats up faster than water, the air
temperature above the sea is lower than above the ground
during day time. Warm air thus moves out from land to
sea, slowing down the rise of air temperature above land.
• At night, soil cools down faster than water, so the air
temperature above ground is lower than that above the
sea. Warm air then flows from sea to land, so the drop in
air temperature above ground is moderated.
OCEAN CURRENTS
It is a study of the
forms and features of
land surfaces. The
topography may
refers to mountain,
valleys, rivers or
craters.
OCEAN CURRENTS
Surface currents are an important factor in the ocean
because they are a major factor in determining climate
around the globe. Currents on the surface are
determined by three major factors: the major overall
global wind patterns, the rotation of the Earth, and the
shape of ocean basins.
Coriolis Effect
The Coriolis Effect causes
winds and currents to form
circular patterns. The
direction that they spin
depends on the
hemisphere that they are
in.
• Because the Earth's equator is warmed by the most
direct rays of the Sun, air at the equator is hotter than air
further north or south.
• This hotter air rises up at the equator, and as colder air
moves in to take its place, winds begin to blow and push
the ocean into waves and currents.
• From the equator, warm water pushes outward to the
North and South poles. At the same time, cold water from
the North and South poles collide with this warm water.
HOW CORIOLIS EFFECT WORKS:
• Due to the earth spins on its axis, water flows in a circular
pattern. This causes currents to flow clockwise in the
northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern
hemisphere.
• These clockwise and counterclockwise movements of
ocean currents are caused by the Coriolis Effect.
• The air above the warm water has a higher temperature.
When warm ocean currents that take along warm water go
to a land mass, the temperature of that place increases as
warmer air above the water flows inland, resulting in a
warm climate.
HOW CORIOLES EFFECT WORKS:
• LATITUDE - The lower the latitude, the warmer the
climate; the higher the latitude, the colder the climate.
• ALTITUDE - The higher the altitude or elevation, the lower
the temperature; the lower the altitude or elevation, the
higher the temperature.
• DISTANCE FROM BODIES OF WATER - large bodies of
water have a moderating effect on the temperatures of
coastal areas, producing low ranges in temperature, both
between day and night and seasonally.
• OCEAN CURRENTS - Ocean currents tend to warm
• temperature of eastern coastal areas and cool
temperatures of western coastal areas.
KEYPOINTS:
Greenhouse Effect
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms
the Earth’s surface. When the Sun’s energy reaches the
Earth’s atmosphere, some of it is reflected to space and
the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse
gases. These gases include water vapor, carbon
dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and some
artificial chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons
(CFCs).
The higher amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere,
the higher the temperature will be as these gases absorb more
heat. This will eventually lead to an increase in global
temperature. On the other hand, a lesser amount of
greenhouse gases will mean lower temperatures.
The Greenhouse Gases:
• Carbon dioxide (CO2) -is one of the major pollutants in the
atmosphere. Major sources of CO2 are fossil fuels burning and
deforestation.
• Sulfur and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) -Sulfur dioxide is
reduced by combustion of sulfur-containing fuels, such as coal
and fuels oils. Also, in the process of producing sulfuric acid
and in metallurgical process involving ores that contain sulfur.
N20 – nitrous oxide -comes from nitrogen-based fertilizers,
deforestation, and biomass burning
• Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) -Chlorofluorocarbon, also known
as Freon, which is a substance used in refrigeration
and air-conditioning, is a greenhouse gas that contributes to
global warming.
• Methane (CH4) -Methane emission results from livestock and
other agricultural practices and by the decay of organic waste
in solid waste landfill.
N20 – nitrous oxide -comes from nitrogen-based fertilizers,
deforestation, and biomass burning
• Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) -Chlorofluorocarbon, also
known as Freon, which is a substance used in refrigeration
and air-conditioning, is a greenhouse gas that contributes to
global warming.
• Methane (CH4) -Methane emission results from livestock and
other agricultural practices and by the decay of organic waste
in solid waste landfill.
Ozone -is a natural gas composed of three atoms of oxygen.
Its chemical symbol is O3 .It is blue in color and has a strong
odor. Environmental scientists have classified O3 into two:
Good Ozone (filter ultra violet rays) and Bad Ozone (as
pollutants).
Enhanced Greenhouse Effect
• The life cycles of plants and animals have changed. There
are some species of plants that bloom earlier than expected.
Animal adaptations such as migration and hibernation have
changed as well.
• The sea level continues to rise due to the melting of ice caps
and glaciers in polar regions. If sea level increase by 50 cm,
sea turtles may lose their nesting areas.
• Droughts occur in land areas which dry out trees and
vegetation. This fuels wildfires which deteriorates air quality,
kills animals, and destroy their habitat, and causes property
loss.
Enhanced Greenhouse Effect
• Heavy rainfalls and strong typhoons are experienced even
in the Philippines. Changes in rainfall patterns and
distribution lead to floods, submersions of residential areas,
and destruction of agricultural crops.
• These are only some of the impacts of climate change that
can be observed and felt in the present time. We should
start to take actions to lessen the effect of climate change.
Basic information about El NiĂąo:
• Abnormal and lengthy warming in the eastern part of Pacific
Ocean.
• Occurs at irregular intervals of two to seven years and lasts
for nine months or two years at most.
• Starts at the end of the year during the Christmas season.
Events during the occurrence of El NiĂąo:
• Trade winds move from west to east as they collect warm air
• When trade winds are weakened, they cause the piling-up of
warm surface water and make the part of the Pacific Ocean
warmer leading to the El NiĂąo phenomenon.
• Happens when the upwelling of colder water is blocked by the
large quantities of warm surface water.
Basic information about El NiĂąo:
• La Niña is the opposite climatic disturbance to El Niño.
• This natural phenomenon may, but does not always, follow El
NiĂąo events.
• It may last for nine to twelve months but in some cases, it
lasts for two years.
• This event is triggered by the cooling of the eastern part of the
Pacific Ocean.
• Trade winds that move from east to west are strengthened.
Global Warming
Scientists believe that this global warming is the result of a
concurrent increase in the levels of atmospheric greenhouse
gases, specifically carbon dioxide, methane and the
chlorofluorocarbons. It is also believed that the greenhouse
gases have been increasing primarily because of human
activities. Increasing amounts of carbon dioxide are released
into the atmosphere due to the ever-growing combustion of
fossil fuels.

  • 1.
  • 2. DIRECTIONS: The teacher will provide a set of picture in a box. Then the students who are called will take a certain pic in the box and identify if the given picture is geothermal heat pump, geothermal power plant or its example. ACTIVITY 1: TAKE A PIC!
  • 3. DIRECTION: The class will be divided into 2 groups. The teacher will then provide a particular scenario wherein a students will put it in action. ACTIVITY 2: PAINT ME A PICTURE!
  • 4. 1. Paint me a picture of a students being thirsty because of the heat from the sun. 2. Paint me a picture of a garbage being thrown by the people in the river. 3. Paint me a picture of a family being hit by a typhoon. 4. Paint me a picture of an animals experiencing drought. 5. Paint me a picture of students hit by the flood.
  • 6. OBJECTIVES: Differentiate climate from weather. 02 Explain how latitude affect the climate change. 03 Appreciate the value of climate in the people’s daily life. 01
  • 7.
  • 8. Climate Change: A Wider Perspective Climate change refers to significant, long-term changes in the global climate. The global climate is the connected system of sun, earth and oceans, wind, rain and snow, forests, deserts and savannas, and everything people do, too. Climate change is a long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earth’s local, regional and global climates.
  • 9. We may experience severe weather disturbances such as stronger typhoons and heavier rainfalls, resulting in extreme weather events such as floods and even droughts. It also increases the spread of tropical diseases, and worse, it can cause the extinction of some flora and fauna. Climate change is expected to affect the entire world, but its impact will not be the same across all regions. Some will be worse hit than others because of a range of different threats.

  • 12. Weather The word ‘weather’ refers to short period variation in the atmosphere at a given place. In other words, the physical state of the atmosphere at a given time constitutes weather. Weather at any place is defined as the momentary condition of the atmosphere. It varies from day to day and place to place.
  • 13. Weather Elements 1. Air Temperature—the degree of hotness or coldness of the air 2. Air Pressure—the force of the air above an area 3. Humidity—a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air 4. Clouds—a visible mass of tiny water droplets and/or ice crystals that are above the earth’s Surface.
  • 14. Weather Elements 5. Precipitation—any form of water, either liquid or solid (rain or snow), that falls from clouds and reaches the ground. 6. Visibility—the greatest distance one can see. 7. Wind—the horizontal movement of air.
  • 15. Climate Change: A Wider Perspective The word climate refers to the condition of the atmosphere over a long period of time over a large area. In other words, the long-term average of weather is climate. The climate differs from region to region and season to season. Climate determines water potential, natural vegetation, cropping pattern, land use, housing and other infrastructure, industrial location, racial characteristics, etc.
  • 16. Climatic change has been attributed to both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial processes. The main factors are: • Astronomical: Variations in the incoming solar radiation due to changes in the sun-earth distance arising from variation in the ellipticity of the orbit and also changes in the inclination of the axis. • Geological: Changes in the disposition of oceans and continents. • Anthropogenetic: Changes due to human activities in the form of deforestation, the release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, etc
  • 18. LATITUDE • The word latitude is from the Latin, “latus”, which means “wide.” Latitude is the distance measured in degrees north and south of the equator. Another name for latitude is parallels because they run at equal distances and do not cross one other.

  • 21. FACTORS AFFECTING CLIMATE CHANGE LATITUDE • The word latitude is from the Latin, “latus”, which means “wide.” Latitude is the distance measured in degrees north and south of the equator. Another name for latitude is parallels because they run at equal distances and do not cross one other.
  • 22. LATITUDE The days and nights near the equator are almost equal in length, while near the poles, the length of days and nights varies with season.
  • 23. LATITUDE • The lower the latitude, the warmer the climate; the higher the latitude, the colder the climate.
  • 24. LATITUDE As the latitude increases north or south of the equator, the temperature decreases. The latitudinal position of a country or its distance from the equator and the Earth's axial tilt defines its climate.
  • 25. LATITUDE • As the latitude increases north or south of the equator, the temperature decreases. The latitudinal position of a country or its distance from the equator and the Earth's axial tilt defines its climate.
  • 26.
  • 27. Q1. How much is the tilt of Earth’s axis? Q2. Which part of the earth receives most of the sun’s rays? Q3. Why does the amount of heat received by places far from the equator become less? Q4. Why are the coldest places on earth found near the poles? Q5. Why are places with high temperature found at the equator? Q6. How does latitude affect climate?
  • 28. Who among these people received less heat? Why
  • 29. Who among these people received more heat? Why
  • 30. Which part of their bodies experienced more heat? Why
  • 31. Who among these people received moderate heat? Why
  • 32. Which part of their bodies experienced less heat? Why
  • 33.
  • 34. ALTITUDE • Altitude is a distance, usually in the vertical or “up” direction, between a reference and point of object.
  • 35. Mt. Kiliminjaro As the air temperature decreases as altitude increases.
  • 36. Baguio City Why is it that during summer, many people visit Baguio City?
  • 37. It has an annual average temperature of 16 ÂşC. It has an elevation of 1435 m above sea level. Baguio City has a lower temperature and cold climate than the surrounding areas because of its high altitude or elevation. The air temperature decreases as the altitude increases.
  • 38. Why do mountain climbers wear jackets and thick clothes when they go up the mountain?
  • 39. The higher the altitude or elevation, the lower the temperature. For every 1000-m, there is a drop of 6.500C. At higher elevations, the air molecules are farther apart, thus making the air less dense. Lighter air cannot absorb much heat, making air temperature lower. Ultimately, the decrease in air temperature is due to the decrease in air pressure.

  • 42. TOPOGRAPHY It is a study of the forms and features of land surfaces. The topography may refers to mountain, valleys, rivers or craters.
  • 43. • The area in which the wind blows is called the windward side. • The air moves down towards the opposite region called the leeward side. • The dry region on the leeward side is called a rain shadow.
  • 45. • Places that are near the oceans have a moderate climate as the body of water regulates the temperature. • Because soil heats up faster than water, the air temperature above the sea is lower than above the ground during day time. Warm air thus moves out from land to sea, slowing down the rise of air temperature above land. • At night, soil cools down faster than water, so the air temperature above ground is lower than that above the sea. Warm air then flows from sea to land, so the drop in air temperature above ground is moderated.
  • 46.
  • 47.
  • 48.
  • 49. OCEAN CURRENTS It is a study of the forms and features of land surfaces. The topography may refers to mountain, valleys, rivers or craters.
  • 50. OCEAN CURRENTS Surface currents are an important factor in the ocean because they are a major factor in determining climate around the globe. Currents on the surface are determined by three major factors: the major overall global wind patterns, the rotation of the Earth, and the shape of ocean basins.
  • 51. Coriolis Effect The Coriolis Effect causes winds and currents to form circular patterns. The direction that they spin depends on the hemisphere that they are in.
  • 52. • Because the Earth's equator is warmed by the most direct rays of the Sun, air at the equator is hotter than air further north or south. • This hotter air rises up at the equator, and as colder air moves in to take its place, winds begin to blow and push the ocean into waves and currents. • From the equator, warm water pushes outward to the North and South poles. At the same time, cold water from the North and South poles collide with this warm water. HOW CORIOLIS EFFECT WORKS:
  • 53. • Due to the earth spins on its axis, water flows in a circular pattern. This causes currents to flow clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere. • These clockwise and counterclockwise movements of ocean currents are caused by the Coriolis Effect. • The air above the warm water has a higher temperature. When warm ocean currents that take along warm water go to a land mass, the temperature of that place increases as warmer air above the water flows inland, resulting in a warm climate. HOW CORIOLES EFFECT WORKS:
  • 54. • LATITUDE - The lower the latitude, the warmer the climate; the higher the latitude, the colder the climate. • ALTITUDE - The higher the altitude or elevation, the lower the temperature; the lower the altitude or elevation, the higher the temperature. • DISTANCE FROM BODIES OF WATER - large bodies of water have a moderating effect on the temperatures of coastal areas, producing low ranges in temperature, both between day and night and seasonally. • OCEAN CURRENTS - Ocean currents tend to warm • temperature of eastern coastal areas and cool temperatures of western coastal areas. KEYPOINTS:
  • 55. Greenhouse Effect The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth’s surface. When the Sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s atmosphere, some of it is reflected to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases. These gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and some artificial chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
  • 56.
  • 57. The higher amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the higher the temperature will be as these gases absorb more heat. This will eventually lead to an increase in global temperature. On the other hand, a lesser amount of greenhouse gases will mean lower temperatures. The Greenhouse Gases: • Carbon dioxide (CO2) -is one of the major pollutants in the atmosphere. Major sources of CO2 are fossil fuels burning and deforestation. • Sulfur and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) -Sulfur dioxide is reduced by combustion of sulfur-containing fuels, such as coal and fuels oils. Also, in the process of producing sulfuric acid and in metallurgical process involving ores that contain sulfur.
  • 58. N20 – nitrous oxide -comes from nitrogen-based fertilizers, deforestation, and biomass burning • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) -Chlorofluorocarbon, also known as Freon, which is a substance used in refrigeration and air-conditioning, is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. • Methane (CH4) -Methane emission results from livestock and other agricultural practices and by the decay of organic waste in solid waste landfill.
  • 59. Ozone -is a natural gas composed of three atoms of oxygen. Its chemical symbol is O3 .It is blue in color and has a strong odor. Environmental scientists have classified O3 into two: Good Ozone (filter ultra violet rays) and Bad Ozone (as pollutants).
  • 60.
  • 61. Enhanced Greenhouse Effect • The life cycles of plants and animals have changed. There are some species of plants that bloom earlier than expected. Animal adaptations such as migration and hibernation have changed as well. • The sea level continues to rise due to the melting of ice caps and glaciers in polar regions. If sea level increase by 50 cm, sea turtles may lose their nesting areas. • Droughts occur in land areas which dry out trees and vegetation. This fuels wildfires which deteriorates air quality, kills animals, and destroy their habitat, and causes property loss.
  • 62. Enhanced Greenhouse Effect • Heavy rainfalls and strong typhoons are experienced even in the Philippines. Changes in rainfall patterns and distribution lead to floods, submersions of residential areas, and destruction of agricultural crops. • These are only some of the impacts of climate change that can be observed and felt in the present time. We should start to take actions to lessen the effect of climate change.
  • 63. Basic information about El NiĂąo: • Abnormal and lengthy warming in the eastern part of Pacific Ocean. • Occurs at irregular intervals of two to seven years and lasts for nine months or two years at most. • Starts at the end of the year during the Christmas season. Events during the occurrence of El NiĂąo: • Trade winds move from west to east as they collect warm air • When trade winds are weakened, they cause the piling-up of warm surface water and make the part of the Pacific Ocean warmer leading to the El NiĂąo phenomenon. • Happens when the upwelling of colder water is blocked by the large quantities of warm surface water.
  • 64. Basic information about El NiĂąo: • La NiĂąa is the opposite climatic disturbance to El NiĂąo. • This natural phenomenon may, but does not always, follow El NiĂąo events. • It may last for nine to twelve months but in some cases, it lasts for two years. • This event is triggered by the cooling of the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean. • Trade winds that move from east to west are strengthened.
  • 65. Global Warming Scientists believe that this global warming is the result of a concurrent increase in the levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases, specifically carbon dioxide, methane and the chlorofluorocarbons. It is also believed that the greenhouse gases have been increasing primarily because of human activities. Increasing amounts of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere due to the ever-growing combustion of fossil fuels.

Editor's Notes

  1. Some experts assert that the Earth does go through a period of cooling and a period of warming. The increase in temperature that we are experiencing right now is caused by factors other than human activity. There are also claims that the changes observed in Earth’s climate since the early 20th century are primarily driven by human activities. The burning of fossil fuels specifically increases heat- trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth’s atmosphere. This causes a rise in the Earth’s average surface temperature. These human produced temperature increases are commonly referred to as global warming. Natural processes can also contribute to climate change like El Niño and La Niña. This rising of global temperatures causes sea levels to rise due to the melting of ice caps and glaciers.

  3. Developing countries, countries with widespread poverty, and ineffective environmental policies are expected to face the most severe risks. The impact of climate change has costly effects on the day-to-day life of people, especially those living in big cities in terms of basic services, infrastructure and housing, human livelihoods, and health. At the same time, big cities are a key contributor to climate change, as urban activities are major sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
  4. Fossil fuel is a generic term for non-renewable energy (sources that will not run out or will not replenished in our lifetimes) sources such as coal, coal products, natural gas, crude oil, petroleum products and non-renewable wastes.. It contains carbon and hydrogen which can be nurned for energy.

  6. The equator serves as a reference point and is set at 00 latitude. The latitudinal sections in the Northern Hemisphere are the Tropic of Cancer (23.50 N) and the Arctic Circle (66.50 N). Capping the Northern Hemisphere is the North Pole ( 900 N ). The latitudinal sections in the Southern Hemisphere are the Tropic of Capricorn (23.50 S ) and the Antarctic Circle ( 66.50 S ). The South Pole ( 900 N ) is at the base of the Southern Hemisphere.
  7. The amount of solar radiation received from the sun is determined by two factors: (a) the angle at which the sun’s rays strike the earth, (b) the length of time in which the sun shines during a particular day. In turn these two depend on the latitude of a particular place(the latitude of an area is its distance from the equator)
  8. Direct rays of the sun deliver more heat than the slanted rays. Regions near the equator (low latitude) received direct rays of the sun throughout the year and therefore have higher average temperature compared to the regions near the poles (high latitude), which received slanted rays.
  9. Toward the pole, the nights are long in winter while in summer, daylights are long.
  10. The lower the latitude, the warmer the climate; the higher the latitude, the colder the climate.

  12. The altitude of a place also determines its climate. Even places near the equator experience a cold climate if they are located at a higher altitude compared to those areas located at sea level.

  14. Why do mountain climbers wear jackets and thick clothes when they go up the mountain? The higher the altitude or elevation, the lower the temperature. For every 1000-m, there is a drop of 6.500C. At higher elevations, the air molecules are farther apart, thus making the air less dense. Lighter air cannot absorb much heat, making air temperature lower. Ultimately, the decrease in air temperature is due to the decrease in air pressure.

  18. The area in which the wind blows is called the windward side. Here, the wind is blocked by the mountain, forcing it to move upward. As it moves up, the water vapor condenses and forms clouds. This will result in precipitation on the windward side. The air moves down towards the opposite region called the leeward side. The cold air mass starts to absorb heat and becomes warm and dry. As a result, the area near the leeward side becomes dry and has less precipitation. The dry region on the leeward side is called a rain shadow. Vegetation in this region includes desert plants and grassland.
  19. Places that are far from bodies of water have extreme climates, as there are no immediate bodies of water that will help circulate the movement of cold and warm air. Water absorbs more heat during summer. This is why during summer, areas near a body of water stay cooler with moderate temperatures. In winter, the surrounding water slowly releases heat, causing the cooling effect to become lesser than normal in the nearby landmass.

  22. Ocean water is constantly moving. From north to south, east to west, and up and down the shore, ocean water moves all over the place. These movements result from many separate forces, including local conditions of wind, water, the position of the moon and Sun, the rotation of the Earth, and the position of land formations. The wind that blows over the ocean water creates waves. It also creates surface currents, which are horizontal streams of water that can flow for thousands of kilometers and can reach depths of hundreds of meters.

  24. As an analogy, when you blow across a cup of hot chocolate drink, you create tiny ripples on its surface that continue to move after you have stopped blowing. The ripples in the cup are tiny waves, just like the waves that wind forms on the ocean surface. The movement of hot chocolate throughout the cup forms a stream or current, just as oceanic water moves whenthe wind blows across it.
  25. From the equator, warm water pushes outward to the North and South poles. At the same time, cold water from the North and South poles collide with this warm water.
