A biography of Saint Juliana Falconieri, of medieval Florence, foundress of the Mantellate

1. Saint Juliana
Falconieri,
Virgin,
foundress
of the
Mantellate

2. She was born in Florence in the year 1270. His father was very
rich and had built at his own expense a temple in honor of
the Holy Virgin. Virgin of whom he was extremely devoted.

3. the city was plagued with internecine strife between Guelphs, who
supported the Popes, and the Ghibellines, who supported the emperors.

4. Juliana came from a noble Florentine family that
was deeply involved in the affairs of the city

long periods praying in the temple,

gave up
everything to
consecrate
himself to God.

mother:

gave you a
daughter,

angel."

fascinated by
her uncle’s
vocation as one
of the founders
of the Servants
of Mary (the
Servites).

9. Although she
was a beautiful
young woman,
she rejected all
offers of marriage;
she preferred the
habit of the Servites
to the fashionable
clothing of her
peers.

10. She felt an immense inclination towards virginity. Her father died
when she was very small. Her mother and uncle prepared an
honorable marriage for her, but she told them that she had made the
unwavering decision to remain single and dedicate her life to prayer,
meditation, to charity and apostolate. She was just 15 years old.

chose Juliana
as superior.

16. She dedicated herself to serving the poor, and in
time, other young women began to follow her lead

17. Juliana and her friends were distinguished by the dark
cloaks they wore in imitation of the Servites, and from
this choice of dress were known as the “Mantellate.”

18. They became the female branch of the Servants of Mary,
the Sisters of the Third Order of Servites. Their lives
were given to contemplation and charitable works

took the name
"Servants of the
Virgin Mary.“
For 35 years, until
her death, she
directed this pious
association.

20. She did the most humble jobs in the house, and treated her companions
as if they were far superior to her (fulfilling what Saint Paul recommends:
"Consider others as superior in everything to you)." (Filip) .2,3)

22. Her charity, kindness and inclination to seek the good of the
souls of others were extraordinary. She never missed an
opportunity to help those who needed her collaboration.

23. Many sinners converted from their life of evil after
having a talk with Juliana, the one with the "scarf."

24. The Mantellate became a common sight in Florence. They were known, too,
for promoting peace in a city marked by deadly vendettas. Their sacrifices
were offered for an end to the hatred that plagued the population.

25. Enemies who hated each other to death, made peace and declared peace
forever, when the saint dedicated herself to returning them to friendship again.

to meditating on the
Passion and Death
of Jesus Christ.

28. On Saturdays to think and read about the Blessed Virgin

29. Many times he slept on the hard floor.

30. On Wednesdays and Fridays they fasted completely, while on
Saturdays they contented themselves with bread and water.

31. Juliana proposed an extremely rigorous Rule. She fasted three
days a week, and sometimes went days without eating anything.
This caused her to suffer from stomach ulcers.

32. St Juliana, who guided the community until her death, was able to offer
additional sufferings. For many years she was afflicted with a stomach
ailment that made it difficult to eat solid food. Over time, it became
impossible for her to swallow even the little food necessary to sustain her

her greatest
mortification

36. It soon became clear that her life was drawing
to a close. Because of her illness, she was unable
to receive Holy Communion for the dying.

could not take
communion, she
asked that a white
cloth be placed over
her heart and
the Holy Host
be placed on it.
The Consecrated Host
disappeared and no
one could find it.

38. As soon as the
Consecrated Host
placed over her heart
disappeared, Juliana,
with an expression of
immense joy on her
face, as if she were in
ecstasy, died full of
love for Our Lord.

39. As her sisters prepared her for burial, they discovered the image of the Cross, similar
to the one on the host, had appeared on Juliana’s body. This was widely acclaimed as
a Eucharistic miracle, and the story became part of the liturgical account of her life

40. She had asked to be able to receive the Blessed Jesus before she died, and
her stomach did not allow it, but her faith achieved the miracle of being
able to take communion. After she died they found a round scar on her
heart, on her skin, as if they had cut it for a Host to pass through.
