The United States And The 21st Century Essay
Today, in the 21st century, English has become one of the most used languages around the world. It is
so widely used that linguists have considered it to be the new lingua franca . Along with its language
the United States is one of the most influential countries around the globe. There is no denying its
presence in everything from international politics to entertainment. In fact, it is thought to be the only
country that rivals the world s once great empires in terms of its global impact. In an article written by
Mclean, she proclaims, the U.S dominates world politics by providing the language, ideas, and
institutional frameworks around which much of the world turns (2). However, the United States did
not just become an imperial power over night. From the middle of the 19th century till present time
the U.S has been intervening in foreign lands. One country that has been immensely influenced by
English colonization, to present day, is the Island of the Philippines. Whether it was consciously or
not, the control of the Philippines by U.S after the Spanish American War was a small step towards
world power. A brief look into Philippines history shows how much different the island would ve been
without English rule. Although the Philippines were not pleased with the transfer of power over to
America in the Treaty of Paris, the short 50 year rule proves to have had a major impact on Philippine
culture, customs, and politics today.
The archipelago, Philippines, is located

Introduction
The old generation of electrical power grid has taken care of our needs in the past. However, as our
world progress technologically, so do the expectations from different infrastructures around us. Smart
grid is an initiative to completely restructure the electrical power grid to meet the current and future
requirements of its clients. Upgrading our electrical power grid could bring novel security
vulnerabilities into the system. Thus, security is one of the key parts in smart grid technology. Smart
grid technology also puts more reliability demands on WAN (wide area network) infrastructures. [1]
A smart grid is an intelligent electricity network that integrates the actions of all users connected to it
and makes use of innovative information, control, and communication technologies to save energy, cut
cost, and raise reliability and transparency. The smart grid is an upgrade to the current electrical power
structure. Meaning, on top of the functionality of our existing power system, it has upgraded with
some novel specifications. These new features adds more vulnerability to the system. [2]
Smart grid is mainly composed of six basic systems: power generation system, distribution system,
transmission network, data management and processing system, smart metering system, and customer
information system. The network architecture of smart grid

Greenland Norse Collapse
The Choices Societies Make and the Challenges Surrounding Them The choices the Greenland Norse,
the people of Easter Island, and the people of Haiti made directly contributed to their societal collapse.
Their environmental fragility advanced their downfall, but ultimately their poor decision making led
to their collapse. The Greenland Norse s and people of Easter Island s incorrect choices were mostly
due to social challenges and reluctance to abandon traditions, but the incorrect choices of the Haitian
people were due to selfness and impulsiveness. The Greenland Norse are an excellent example of a
society that has collapsed because of the choices they have made, but they also serve as an example of
a society who suffered great challenges when considering these alternative solutions. In particular, the
Greenland Norse s lack of adaptability in the decision s they favored regarding hunting, livestock, the
relationship with the Inuit, and the need for European identity drove their society to a collapse. The
Norse came to Greenland with traditional hunting and livestock customs such as growing hay to feed
their large number of livestock. They practically ignored all other types of hunting that would have

The separation the Haitian elite enacted and the poor judgment regarding the removal of the white
population in Haiti were two detrimental choices the Haitian people made. The majority of the Haitian
people did not make the first flawed choice. Much like the Greenland Norse, the wealthier citizens of

class and making the collective economy of Haiti grow, Haiti s elite identified strongly with France

Merger And Acquisitions From A Strategic Financial...
In recent times, merger and acquisition are considered as one of the important steps for strategic
growth. A company can plan to merge or acquire another company if it thinks it is a good investment,
or they will earn a sound investment from it. The primary goal of any company entering into merger
or acquisition is to boost the shareholder wealth. From a financial perspective, merger is carried due to
diversification. It is the process of reducing the risks through investment decisions. For example,
many a times, a company is highly at risk since it has done enormous investment in one industry then
it can intend to buy a business in another industry (Sky Plc, 1990). This is termed as acquisition and

4. Himalayan pink salt will help improve your sleep, is this claim really true? According to Sifferlin in
the article Does Pink Himalayan Salt Have Any Health Benefits? they get to the bottom of this claim.
Throughout the article, it mentions how this salt is rumored to be healthier for its greater concentration
of trace elements....improves sleep (Sifferlin,2017). The article continues about the hype for this salt
then it gets into a research section where it mentions that there is no scientific evidence for all these
claims about the salt and states if you want to add a pinch of pink salt to your food, go ahead, but you
probably won t reap any special health benefits. (Sifferlin,2017). Eye candy is the most this salt will
likely give you and you should not expect a lot out of using this special pink salt over regular table
salt. The next article I found mentioning that this salt can promote healthy sleep patterns. It mentions

The Role Of The Dublin Lockout Of 1913
James Larkin, the leader of the Irish Trade Union and the founder of the Irish Transport and General
Workers Union once said The employers cannot carry on industry nor accumulate profits if they have
not got the good will of the workers or their acquiescence in carrying on such industry. In 1911, over
300,000 people lived in Dublin. The unemployment rates were high and the average labourers wage
was around one pound a week, and that was only if they had a full week of work. Living conditions
were equally as inadequate as the working wages. Lydia Carroll and Enda Leaney found in a housing
enquiry that 87,305 people lived in poverty, almost a third of Dublin s population. 80% of families
lived in one room dwellings. According to the Public Health Report of 1913, 8,639 deaths were
recorded, 1,444 were from tuberculosis and 4,642 were from nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and
digestive diseases such as diarrhoea and pneumonia due to inadequate sanitary and nutrition.(Devine,
pg 3 4) These conditions sparked many protests as workers became desperate. James Larkin became a
renowned figure of the movement toward a better Ireland for the labourers. This essay will discuss the
comparison of leadership between the employers and the employed in Ireland during the Dublin

Personal Narrative- Homeless Man Essay
Personal Narrative Homeless Man
My friends often describe me as a cynic and a pessimist. For the most part, they re right. Sentiment
loses value when it permeates one s attitudes and behavior just as the value of a commodity decreases
as it becomes ubiquitous, so as a rule I reserve expressing sentiment for rare occasions that I deem
worthy. Fortunately, even the harshest cynics are surprised sometimes.
To begin, most people in my hometown know who Mike is. But I would bet that ninety nine percent of
those people don t know Mike s name. Mike is a homeless man who lives at the public library. He
didn t really attract my attention until several months ago; since then, I have found him impossible to

With guilt welling up inside my chest for driving past Mike so many previous times and overlooking
him, I couldn t make myself look away.
As the light turned green, I sat for a moment, not moving, and asked myself what I was going to do.
Then I accelerated slowly, waiting for the car on my left to pass as I changed over to the left lane. I
made four left turns at four consecutive stoplights until I approached the library again. Pulling into the
library s parking lot, I turned off my lights, radio, and heat. As I opened the car door, the cold air stung
me like a quick slap to my face. Slowly and uncertainly, I walked toward Mike.
The street was eerily quiet as I crossed. So was Mike. Staring at me unwaveringly, he said nothing as I
approached. The crow s feet framing his eyes, the ridges in his forehead, and the crinkles in his cheeks
still stand out in my mind. How many nights had he lain on that bench, covering his face as the wind
whipped against it? Now he hugged his body tightly. He was wearing an old pair of tan khakis, a shirt
that I couldn t see clearly, and a light multi colored jacket, its sleeves ending above his pale wrists,
that was just slightly too small and clung to his body. As I gave him the money in my wallet, he took it
slowly and stared at it for a second in disbelief. Although the street in front of the library is usually an
amalgam of car horns, headlights, whining engines throughout the night, nothing not

The Refugee Crisis And The Arab Spring
The Refugee Crisis
Nothing ever stays in the place it stars; everything has a habit of spreading. Throughout history,
problems rarely ended in the places they started. Like the plague, Ebola, WWI/II, communism, the
Arab spring, and now the Syrian crisis. The Arab Spring was a series of anti government protests,
uprisings, and armed rebellions that spread across the Middle East in early 2011. The Arab spring
protest against al Assad s Syrian government in the spring of 2011 evolved into an armed conflict
between oppositions and government forces in certain cities and then evolved into a civil war. The
Syrian civil war caused the large scale diaspora of Syrian citizens, leading to the Syrian refugee crisis.
The Syrian refugee crisis led to psychological and physical problems for the refugees and various
problems in neighboring host countries, but solutions have been effective so far.
The refugee crisis led to physical problems like inadequate accommodation, lack of necessities, and
comfort. In addition, Psychological problems, due to trauma that has been suffered and continuing
problems with day to day living. According to the United Nations, approximately 2 million Syrian
refugees are seeking asylum in the neighboring countries of Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon and half of
those refugees are children Thousands of these children were displaced in refugee camps; some of
them without their parents to comfort them from the horrors of war (a1). According to Dr. Rona,

The European colonists of New Zealand did not recognise principles of Mātauranga Māori. However,
during the late twentieth century awareness has grown and it has become more recognised and is now

Manaaki Whenua (Landcare Research) is a Crown Research Institute that is trying to understand and

My Family s Influence On My Life
The word community maintains an assortment of meanings for each of us. These meanings are
composed from various life experiences within our communities. To me, my communities include my
family, friends, schools, work, and the town I live in. My communities have had an influence on who I
have become as a person and continue to influence me on a daily basis. As I reflect back on the past
twenty years, the community that has had the most impact on me is my family. Now, everyone has
their own definition of family. So, when I say the word family, I am referring to my mom and dad.
These two people have had the most influence on my life. From the very beginning, I began to shape
the person I am based on the people my parents are. I can remember spending many hours with my
dad in his shop, watching him diagnose mechanical problems. Then I would watch as he took apart a
machine piece by piece, only to reassemble it exactly the same way once the problem at hand was
resolved. As the years progressed, I became closer with my mom, spending the majority of my time
with her. I would help her around the house with everyday chores. I can remember the joy I
experienced when I was able to go to work with mom. I would watch in awe at the number of tasks
my mother was responsible for at one time. How she would swiftly move from one task to another,
handling the many interruptions, and balancing the numerous new tasks placed on her desk each day.

¨For me it s that sense of Swing that drove the big band era. Its dance music...that makes people smile

music and as Weinstein said it made people have a good time and smile when they felt like they

then it must have had been an influential period in music with its musicians, enriching history, and its
eventual demise. The era of swing was an influential era of music that lasted from 1935 to 1946.

Drumming Traditions Of Ghan Traditional Music

Drumming Traditions of Ghana
The Traditional music of Africa presents itself as an oral practice of instrumental skill passed down
from ancient ancestors. This idea has influenced the sound produced through instrumentation thus
allowing the replication of spoken language. Within Ghanaian tradition, the practice of dance
drumming is a part of everyday culture and can be linked to religion, politics, life events and
entertainment (Green 2012 p. 235 238). The practice of drumming acts as the central focus of Ghana s
musical culture functioning to form well connected ethnic groups (Jones 1964 p. 334). Through the

Rhythms known as okomfo twene are chosen based on their success in attracting the gods but it is not
uncommon for musicians to create their own. The Asente perform three modes of drumming, which
are signal mode, speech mode and dance mode; these may all be observed within the possession ritual.
The drumming of the healing ceremony is often dynamic signaling the beginnings of a ritual whilst its
connection to dance rhythms inspires movement thus encouraging possession. The drums used within
the ceremony are the talking drums called Atumpan that feature a high tone and a low tone which are
used to mimic tonal language of the Asente (Wilson 2006).
It is through the musical elements incorporated within the healing ceremony that attendance,
possession and the ability to heal is affected. The significance of the drum within this ritual to appease
the gods can be compared to the importance of drumming in relation to the deceased in funeral
ceremonies of the Ewe people.
Within the tradition of the Ewe people, music is a representation of worth with this idea reflected
within funeral ceremonies. Ghanaian funerals of the Ewe people do not only function to farewell

Albania is located on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea and western part of the Balkan Peninsula.
With its neighboring countries: Montenegro and Serbia to the North, Macedonia to the East, and
Greece to the South. Albania is composed of two major regions: a mountainous highland region
(North, East, and South) constituting seventy percent of the land area, and a western coastal lowland
region that contains nearly all of the country s agricultural land and is the most densely populated part
of Albania. Most historians of the Balkans believed that the Albanian people are in large part of the
ancient Illyrians. The name Albania is derived from the name of an Illyrian tribe called Arber , or

Throughout history invaders and or conquerors from all over the world had terrorized small villages,
towns, cities, and slaughtered innocent bystanders regardless of age. These invaders forced themselves
into a new land and called it their new home and began a new settlement. Whatever their agendas
were, they were mostly for the same reason: land and its resources and simply the opportunity to
expand their influence. Many countries had suffered this type of invasion. It had almost taken out the
entire culture of one s nation. Albania in particular had been under controlled by different conquerors.
Albania s history was driven under different Empires. The very first one to rule Albania was Phillip II
of Macedon, father of one of the greatest conqueror of all time, Alexander II of Macedon no other than
Alexander the Great. Phillip II, had ruled the country after defeating the Illyrian kingdom of
Bardhyllus in the fourth century B.C. After the death of Phillip II, his son took over and rallied the
Albanians nationals to be part of the conquest of Persia. The death of Alexander the Great, Albanian s
Illyrian kingdoms rose again and took control of the country. However, the Illyrian kingdoms did not
last for very long, as it had fallen under the command of Roman Empire in 168 B.C. Albania was

Beta Carotene
As stated in Diet, nutrition and the prevention of cancer by Timothy J Key et.al, Researchers estimate
that 80 90% of all cancers are environmentally related. In that broad category termed environmental,
the National Cancer Institute lists diet as the number one contributing factor. If someone is ill/has
cancer, nutrient supply must be increased for the body to recover and get well. Certain nutrients may
help boost immune system efficiency which is difficult to accomplish if the diet of a cancer patient, or
someone trying to prevent cancer, consists of high sugar and high fat diets. In terms of preventing
cancerous formations, dietary changes are crucial for those who are used to the Standard American
Diet. Some nutrients/foods that scientists have studied to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Laboratory and animal research has shown that exogenous antioxidants can help prevent the free
radical damage associated with the development of cancer. (Dr. Walter Willet, 2015). A major
antioxidant study is beta carotene. Beta carotene has shown the ability to scavenge free radicals as
well as inhibit new cancerous cell production. We always hear how vegetables are essential to a
healthy diet but may not understand why. Vegetables contain high amounts of antioxidants, such as
beta carotene, and an extensive amount of vitamins. In green, yellow, and red fruits and vegetables,
beta carotene is present and contains the ability to be converted to Vitamin A, if needed by the body.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that converts free radicals to harmless waste and is said to detoxify
carcinogenic compounds. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and free radical scavenger. It has been shown in
studies to inhibit tumor growth and enhance the effects of cytoxic drugs that block the growth of cells
in the body, allowing a reduction of the dosage. (Calbom, 1992) Vitamin D has been studied by

If I could, I would give Ishmael a dozen of other awards after his story as a boy soldier, but I think this
award suits him best. A Long Way Gone tells the story of a young boy who experiences war for years
without any family and only the hope of living to find them one day. The story begins with the terrible
happening of rebel attacks while Ishmael is far from his family. He had travelled to this city near his
home to attend a talent show. Soon, as they return, they take notice of the attacks and have no choice
rather than fleeing far from their home. Accompanied by his older brother and a few friends, they

Figure 1: The biggest priority for drinking water The Figure 1 illustrates the effect of quality, cost,
availability and smell to drinking water habits of overseas students in Australia and their home
countries. The majority of students agreed that the quality of water was the most important element for
drinking water regardless in Australia or home countries. When international students came to
Australia, they were also less care about the quality of water as they were in their own countries.
There was 74% of respondents said that they considered about quality of water in their own countries.
There was 24% and 12% of the sample paying attention about availability and cost respectively in

My Life For A Small Group Program
It always seemed a bit cliché when people speak or write on specific events that change how they
viewed themselves and their world. At the surface, I often discard comments of people who see just
one event changing their lives for (typically) better or worse. Events are not alone, but are part of a
system of chances and choices made by ourselves or others. These choices come together and form
what we perceive as a singular event. Despite this rather cold and analytical belief, I always secretly
envied people who have these interventions in their everyday lives. The last major event for me
occurred a number of years ago when I was robbed of two people who I loved and adored: my
Grandparents. Since losing them, I have felt like a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

After the final time, I just decided to stare at the Wall and then I felt the hands of my Grandparents on

prayers and we began walking out of the complex. Right as we were leaving, I saw a very important
Jewish ritual being offered a meter or two away. It was the putting on of the tefillin.
Something within me called to put on the tefillin. It is important to mention that the last time I put

While it was being wrapped on me, I felt the leather straps and the holiness seemingly pouring onto

Persuasive Essay On Owning A House
In this day and age, we are advancing and changing the traditional routines past generation set for us.
Today millennials are trying different turns in the workforce, not starting at the bottom to the top.
Because of this empowerment, some get the dream job they work so hard for all the while being in
school. With this some say they feel entitled; some say they know their worth. Also, the internet has
created a new way for a side hustle, selling things on the internet, making money off YouTube videos,
providing driving services, and even creating apps. So why wouldn t millennials want to own a house,
knowing they have income coming in? Could it be they saw their parents face the recession? Could it
be they haven t found their purpose in life? Or could the burden of college debt stop them from
purchasing? Maybe they re waiting until they meet that special someone or possibly owning a home is
overrated? All these factors may be the reasons there is a decline in real estate ownership. Therefore, if
millennials want to invest in a home, they need to look into the reason why they re buying the house.
See the pros and cons of being a first time buyer and be a pessimist, not an optimist. Buying a home is
a stressful shopping experience, but could be the best experience if they have the right people in their
corner and they re ready for this big step. Right people as in a realtor that is honest and looks out for
them and also family members or a friend who can rationalize

The World s Second Largest Currency
The Euro is the most important event for the global financial markets since the United States left gold
and started backing the dollar in 1971. The Euro is now facing a dropping in value that may or may
not predict our world s future economies. I am going to inform you on the effects of the Euro through
its history and making, and the effects it plays on European and the United States economies. The
Euro is the world s second largest currency: more than 337.5 million EU citizens in the 19 countries
use it as their currency (European Commission). It was designed to ease the process of providing
services, transporting goods and moving capital between nations. Overall, the Euro was made for
enlarging mutual trade. At first, the Euro was launched as an electronic currency but became cash
currency on January 1, 2002. This is the first time since the Roman Empire, that a good portion of
Europe will have the same currency (Solomon). This date was not only important for the Euro but was
also the beginning of a centralized monetary policy, the European Central Bank. The European Central
Bank (ESCB) would then implant monetary policy on the countries using the common currency.
The Euro is the commonly accepted currency for 19 of the 27 members of the European Union. It
combines members of the European Union by creating the Eurozone, a negotiated partnership that
share economic and political beliefs. The agreements made between these countries were expected to

The American Dream is the belief that you can become prosperous and successful through dedication

the ugly sides of the American dream to communicate with the reader and show the darker side of the
time period and the negatives of The American Dream behind the glamour and glitz, some of which
we can even link to today s society. His idea in The Great Gatsby however may have been drafted

Both are portrayed to be desolate places. The Village of Fish consists literally of 12 men and nothing
more. Both settings have a train that runs through them. The significance of this could be that no
journey is without struggle, suffering and sometimes even failure. People set out on a journey to
achieve greatness, but fail and end up in a place such as the Valley of Ashes. There are great
differences though between these two settings. One prominent one is that The Village of Fish is
introduced in great detail to us in chapter two, and aside from a brief mention later on, is ignored the
rest of the tale. The Valley of Ashes however is an important setting. It connects New York to East and
West Egg and is quite an important setting. It is where we first meet Myrtle, Tom s mistress. It is also
where her gruesome demise occurs, so significant events occur here. It is a huge contrast to the Village
of Fish, which doesn t seem very important in Tales of the Jazz Age . It seemed like it was going to be

For I do not wish to become lie the Dark Lord himself. Yet the way of the Ring to my heart is by pity,
pity for weakness and the desire of strength to do good. This is an important aspect of Sauron s evil, as
it is shwon throughout the story that while there are many that wish to do good, they are not strong
enough to resist the Ring, or what it would do to them. When these characters fail, such as Boromir, it

Hyacinth Macaw Research Paper
Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus)
The hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthine) is a parrot homegrown to central and eastern
South America (Wikipedia, 2017). In general these parrots are the largest parrots, about 40 inches in
length (Lafeber, 2017). Their body colour is blue with yellow streaks around eyes and beaks. Perhaps,
the unique feature of this parrot is that the Hyacinth macaw is not having ridges in their beak. These
parrots are having toothless beak (Wild Republic, 2017).
The nesting of Hyacinth macaw begins between July and December. It rely on its predator which is

James Fenimore Cooper died in Cooperstown on September, 14, 1851.
The Last of the Mohicans takes place in 1757, in upstate New York, amidst the British wars with the
French and the Indians. It is the story of a dangerous journey between two British forts taken by two
daughters of one of commander of one of the forts, their traveling companions and the Indians they
encounter along the way. The story begins with Alice and Cora, the daughters of Colonel Munro,
commander of Fort William Henry, heading out from Fort Edward, accompanied by Major Heyward,
to visit their father. The three are guided by an Indian, Magua, who eventually betrays them, in an act
of revenge, and leads them into a trap.
Along the way, they encounter David Gamut, a religious signer from Conneticuit, who joins them on
their trek to the fort. Later they meet Hawkeye and two Mohican Indians, Chingachgook and his son
Uncas, who determine the Indian guide is an enemy. They attempt to capture him, but he escapes only

by Hawkeye and the Mohicans, the group continues to the Fort, the trek included several battles with
the Hurons, one of which resulted in part of the group being captured and later rescued. When the

Gregor Mendel And Marie Curie Research Paper
Born into poverty, both Gregor Mendel and Marie Curie made it very far in the world of science,

modern genetics and Marie Curie who discovered radioactivity used for x rays. Even though Mendel
and Curie made it very far in the world, I feel that Mendel s contributions had more of an impact on
science.
Born Johann Mendel, Gregor grew up in a family of small farmers who made financial sacrifices to
pay for his education. In 1843, Mendel s father expected him to take over the family farm, but Mendel

Darwin s book The Origin of Species talks about how species evolve by means of mutation and
natural selection. Another way that Mendel s theory on Genetics impacts society is our food. Genetics
is used to yield better crops and the reproduction of animals. Marie Curie identified both polonium
and radium in 1898 and describe the elements as radio active. Marie and her husband Pierre shared the
Noble Prize in physics with Becquerel in 1903. And in 1911, she received a second Nobel Prize, this
time in Chemistry.
In conclusion, Mendel and Curie both had a positive impact on the world of Allied Health. Mendel s
work with pea plants contributed to the Allied Health field by giving the fundamental laws of genetics.
Radioactivity that Curie helped discovered led to new therapeutic and diagnostic methods in medicine.
Mendel s experiments led to a greater understanding of genetics. As you can see, Mendel had a greater
impact on society because his laws about genetics affects our crops, our own human genetics and the

Imagery of Snakes in Macbeth Essay
In the biblical book of Genesis, Eve is tempted by a serpent to commit an ungodly act of eating a
forbidden fruit. As a result of the snake s temptation, Eve eats the fruit, resulting in the presence of
worldwide sin and the downfall of perfection. From this story of Adam and Eve, the figure of the
snake has become generally associated with temptation, evil, and cynicism. William Shakespeare
employs this symbolic imagery of snakes in Macbeth, to enhance the story of the rise and fall of
Macbeth s power. For poetic and playwright purposes, Shakespeare uses serpentine imagery to reveal
the malevolence of characters, and portray the threatening position of the throne, all while provoking a
heightened emotion of fear and tragedy from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This struggle of loyalty vs. ambition correlates with Eve s biting of the fruit, which instantaneously
fills her with sin. Eve s ambition was to obtain knowledge of the world, yet in order to achieve it, she
was forced to go against her God. In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth s incentive is power, which in this case
would be a seat on the throne. In both cases, evil is a required side effect to gain their desired qualities.
And this evil desire approaches both characters in the form of a serpent.
Following Lady Macbeth s unsexing , the most descriptive use of serpentine imagery is revealed. Lady
Macbeth persuades Macbeth to kill Duncan. By doing so, she uses a metaphor of a snake to portray
the Macbeth s future evil actions.
To beguile the time,
Look like the time; bear welcome in your eye,
Your hand, your tongue: look like th innocent
flower,
But be the serpent under t. (1.5.64 67).
This simile is very similar to the cliché snake in the grass, which implies a stealthily treacherous and
surprise action. In this passage, Lady Macbeth explains that in order to succeed, they must act normal
around their guests, and conceal their evil desires. The snake thus represents Macbeth s hidden
ambition, and more literally, Lady Macbeth s plan of action.
However, the serpent, to which Lady Macbeth metaphorically speaks of in act one scene five, is not
only these evil desires of Macbeth. It also represents the threat that Macbeth possesses to Duncan.

Henrietta Laks Lab Report
By the early nineties, a scientist at Yale had used HeLa to discover that human cancer cells contain an
enzyme called telomerase that rebuilds their telomeres. The presence of telomerase meant cells could
keep regenerating their telomeres indefinitely. This explained the mechanics of HeLa s immortality:
telomerase constantly rewound the ticking clock at the end of Henrietta s chromosomes so they never
grew old and never died.
Rebecca Skloot, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
As our cells divide and our DNA replicates, our telomeres provide a start and an end point for the
enzyme DNA polymerase to attach to our chromosomes and replicate our DNA. By using a repeated,
non coding section of DNA as the starting point for this replication, the telomeres allow our cells to
replicate without damaging important genes at the attachment point of the replicating enzyme. As this
occurs though, our telomere begin to lose base pairs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most telomere are no more that the simple repetition of the DNA nucleotide sequence TTAGGG two

that 15,000 base pairs, telomeres can perform their functions of preventing chromosome from losing
coding regions of the genome during replication for many replications before reaching what Dr. Jerry
Shay describes as their critical length (Shay Wright). When the telomeres of a cell reach this critical
length and can no longer replicate without damaging the base pair sequences of the chromosomes
themselves, programmed cell death occurs in the form of apoptosis. However, the length of a
chromosome s telomere is not only a linear function of erosion, but also a function of how often
telomerase rebuilds the strands by adding the TTAGGG base pair sequence. It is this way to cheat the

Warhol And Art With Pop Culture Essay
After the World War II, the United States went through a time were economic and political growth.
This was time when Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe were the peak of their fame and television had
replaced the radio. In the 1950 s and the 1960 s there was a new cultural revolution. This new cultural
revolution of activists, thinkers, and artists. This was the time were new generation of artists were
appeared in Britain and in the United States. During the late 1950 s the pop artists began to look for
inspiration in everyday things. They were getting inspiration from consumer goods and mass media.
They began with bold colors, and they also adopted the silk screening. They also established and idea
were there work had its own originality. Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein were very aware of the
past however there idea was to connect fine art with pop culture. There ideas came straight from the
televisions, advertisements, films, and cartoons. Nevertheless the famous creations of Warhol and
Lichtenstein and other artist, managed to stamp the 1950 and 1960 as the pop art era. The pop art first
emerged in the in the United Kingdom. When pop art emerged in the 1950, it received its inspiration
from comic books, pop music, advertising, and movies. In Britain pop art took form from both

An Experiment to Determine Whether People Are Influenced...
An Experiment to Determine Whether People Are Influenced by Leading Questions Abstract The
purpose of the experiment was to determine whether people are influenced by leading questions. This
experiment is a replication of an experiment conducted by Loftus and Palmer in 1974. In the
experiment the independent variable was the verb used (contact, smash). The dependant variable was
the speed estimated by the participants when recalling the picture of the crash from their memory. The
results gave evidence that specific words could influence the retrieval of a memory. This is caused
because of a schema associated with the verb. Contact is a less dramatic verb than smash, leading to
different estimated speeds. This same concept results in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, a canoe would be changed to boat and ghosts were often left out of the participant s
story. The folk tales became more clichéd, conventional and shorter, from 330 to 180 words. This
experiment supports Bartlett s idea for reconstructive memory. The participants could not make sense
of the folk tale so their scemas changed them into something they understood. Allport, Postman (1947)
and Loftus (1974) also support Bartlett s idea of reconstructive memory. Loftus mainly focused on the
reliability of eyewitness testimonies. As done in this experiment, Loftus and Palmer conducted a study
on the effects of wording a question differently and how that would affect the answer. In the
experiment the researchers used two different verbs on two different test groups. One was contact the
other was smashed . The effect of this was a change in the speed estimated by the participants. The
verb contact gave an average speed of 32mph while the verb smash gave an average of 41 mph in the
experiment conducted by Loftus. There is a positive correlation between word use and how memory is
retrieved because of it. Yuille and Cutshall (1986) criticized the findings of Loftus and Palmer. They
investigated an eyewitness testimony of an actual robbery. Although the witness had been asked
misleading questions her testimony was very accurate. This goes against what Loftus and Palmer had
shown with their studies.

Stereotypes In Gossip Girl
And who am I? That s one secret I ll never tell.. You know you love me. xoxo Gossip Girl, this famous
opening from the show Gossip Girl which represented the mystery in the show until the very end.
Gossip girl, a show that let the audience in the lives of manhattan s elite. Gossip Girl is a blogger who
spills secrets of the teens of New York s upper east side. Blair Waldorf the queen bee of Constance
Billard s school, Serena van der Woodsen her beautiful best friend and occasional rival. Chuck Bass
the bad boy who loves to have fun, and then there s Nate Archibald; Chucks best friend, who wants to

The life of teens going to black tie events every week or so even in New York can be unrealistic.
Another fault viewers might complain about is the plots of some episodes may seem obvious or
happen too fast. Viewers can be left with disappointment because some issues can be left resolved
with simple solutions, or some can be completely ignored altogether. Specifically, a scene in the show
has a con man pretending to be Serena s friend; Poppy Lifton, get away with all the money, but it
shows another character Georgina Sparks in a car across the street from Poppy saying I ll handle this
and later on in the next episode the money is back. In that case, I actually wanted to see how she got
the money back, and I was left confused and a little letdown. As for rushed plots, this may be a result
of tired writers, but to make a good show a better one they should have fixed that. One more small
critique, teens in high school without a flaw insight, in reality, that almost never happens.
Nevertheless, this is prime time tv and well of course it s going to be unrealistic that s what makes
entertaining

Stephen Glass In The Film Shattered Glass
Who is Stephen Glass? Is he trustworthy and truthful or manipulative and deceitful? After watching
the film Shattered Glass, the viewer is able to grasp a greater understanding of the central character in
this film, Stephen Glass, and answer this question once and for all. Glass is considered an extremely
kind, unique, manipulative, and, overall, interesting character. In the beginning of the movie, his
coworkers in the office fall in love with him, making him everyone s favorite. Abruptly, everything
goes downhill. Glass finds himself shifting from the New Republic s key to success, to the biggest
downfall of the company; all within the matter of a few days. Although he is extremely likable, he
uses his manipulative personality to cover up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One little mistake ended up exposing him completely, landing him with no job and no friends who
have his back. Stephen Glass published his biggest article yet, Hack Heaven , where he falsely
reported an immense amount of information. He claimed that he was present at the event taking place
regarding a hacker convention, but in reality he was not. In fact, none of it was true, every single detail
he wrote in the article was fake news. Glass argued that he acquired enough information from other
random sources he came across, leading him to believe nobody would find out if he had no personal
fact to back up the information himself. He made up fake people, quoted them, referenced different
nonexistent companies, and participated in other unethical actions. Everything began deteriorating
when a man named Adam Penenberg, a writer for another newspaper, dug further into Glass story.
Starting as theories, Penenberg and his co worker Andy Fox built up a case and began supporting it
with facts, finally becoming confident with the fact that Stephen Glass fabricated the entire piece,
Hack Heaven . Facts such as dates and times did not match up with Glass statements and neither did
websites and phone numbers. For example, Penenberg told Stephen Glass that the website for one of
the sources that he mentioned in his article, Juke Micronics, was not believable. He said, Quite
frankly, it

Persuasive Essay On Tuition Fee
Persuasive Essay Tuition Fee
Have you ever wondered, why more graduated students aren t going to universities and colleges
because, every year, their tuition fee are always increasing? The cost for attending a variety of
universities and colleges programs are students responsibilities, that they need to pay to learn. Every
year, our tuition fee is always increasing that we always wonder why. In 2001, the average for one
year in Ontario was about 3,500 to 5,500 but to this year our average tuition fee for one year is 7,200
to 10,800. Universities and Colleges should decrease their tuition fee.
At first, we should decrease the tuition fee because it s unfair for the cost of international students. For
the cost of an International student is three to four times more expensive than a Canadian student. In
2017, for one year in University our average cost for Canadian student is $8,454 but for International
student average cost is $25,180. In College, their tuition fee is based on what program their choosing
but, it s the same that they need to pay three to four times more expensive. Therefore, when they don t
have enough money to pay, they don t have the opportunity to borrow money from OSAP that they
need to borrow money from banks. When they return back their money to the bank it s not the same as
OSAP. In OSAP, when they return their money to them, they don t need to pay them back with
interests but for banks you ll need to pay back interests, which that depends on their

Essay about Australian Immigration And Its Effects
Australian Immigration and Its Effects
Australia is an island continent which is geographically isolated from the rest of the world. This has
resulted in the evolution of many unique plants and animals and the development of a very fragile
ecosystem. This ecosystem has been influenced by human immigration for many thousands of years.
The original immigrants were the Aborigines who are thought to have migrated to Australia from Asia
between 50 and 100 thousand years ago. These primitive people learned to live in the inhospitable
environment of Australia with very little effect. Their major environmental impact was from the use of
controlled burning of the land. Over the years they had learned the benefit of ... Show more content on

The settlement was started on
January 26 which is now celebrated every year as Australia day. The settlement was later named
Sydney after Britain s secretary, Lord Sydney. Lord Sydney was responsible for the entire colony.
The first European immigrants brought with them their livestock, plants, and traditional ways. Much
of this was not suitable for Australian conditions.
They also brought with them cultural beliefs including the Christian belief that man was superior to
the rest of creation and had the God given right to exploit nature. The Europeans believed that the
Aborigines were inferior and refused to use the knowledge that they had acquired about the
environment. They began a campaign of genocide with bullets, diseases, and even poison. With few
Aborigine survivors the practice of periodic burning came to an end. This led to many of the plants
and animals which had become dependent on this regular burning to die off.
Sheep ranching quickly became a major agricultural practice in Australia.
By 1860 over 20,000,000 sheep were grazing and by 1890 there were over
100,000,000 spread over the entire continent. Sheep graze in large herds and their hooves destroy the
fragile soil by trampling it down so hard that roots and water can not easily get through it. Over
grazing quickly led to soil erosion turning pastures into dust bowls. This also led to the

Persuasive Letter To A Pet
As the new year approaches, you should think about resolutions not just for yourself, but you should
also think about resolutions that would benefit your pets. Here are a few new year s resolutions that
would greatly benefit your dogs and cats.
#1 Update Or Create An ID For Your Pet
If you don t have an ID for your pet, the start of a New Year is a great time time to invest in a
identification tag for you pet that has their name on it as well as your contact information.
If you pet s identification tag is out of date and contains contact information for you that is no longer
valid, get it updated. That way, if anything every happens to your pet, whomever finds them will be
able to get in touch with you.
#2 Teach Your Pet A New Trick ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
#4 Groom Your Pet On A Regular Basis
Finally, make sure that you keep up on your pet s grooming this year.
If you have a dog, sit with it and brush its coat at least once a day. This will only take a few minutes to
do every day and will result in multiple positive benefits. If you brush your dog s coat everyday, more
of their lose fur will end up on their brush instead of around your house. Brushing your dog everyday
should reduce the amount of fur around your house. Additionally, it will help spread the oils on your
dog s skin to their fur, which will help keep their fur looking and feeling healthy. Finally, its a great
way to bond with your dog.
You can also brush your cat as well on a daily basis if they will let you. Many cat s prefer to groom
themselves, but if you start young, your cat should allow you to groom it as well.
Remember grooming extends to your pet s teeth as well. At least once a week, you should brush your
dog or cat s teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically designed for pets. You can also stay on
top of their dental healthy by providing them with treats and chewy toys that are designed to
specifically combat tarter and keep their teeth

Gonorrhoeae
Virulence of N. gonorrhoeae is associated with pili, which demonstrate a crucial function in the
forming of the initial attachment to the host cell. Pili twitching motility assist the pathogen in its
upstream migration of the non motile gonococci, which allows for the colonization and ascendance to
the mucosal surfaces. CD46 also plays an important role as it is a complement regulatory protein and
can be associated with having properties of a membrane cofactor receptor. CD46 is specific to
humans, and is expressed by all nucleated cells of trans membrane proteins. CD46 has been identified
as having a receptor for gonococcal pilus. N. Gonorrhoeae posse piliated gonococci that adhere to a
host by synthesis of dense microcoloniess on the cell s surface. The Opa proteins as well as
lipopolysaccharides bind closely through cell surface receptor epithelial host, subsequently allowing
bacterial subjugation and trancytosis of the epithelial cell host. ... Show more content on

Texas Government
Texas is the second most populous state as well as the second largest state in the United States of
America (Brown, Langenegger, Garcia, Lewis, Biles, 2014). With a huge number of people currently
calling Texas their home, it would make sense to draw the conclusion that the Texas government must
make this state a great place to live by serving its citizens to the best of its abilities. However, it is best
not to make assumptions and in order to ascertain whether the local government actually fulfills this
role we must look at multiple aspects of the government. To assess how well the government of Texas
meets the needs of its citizens we first must look at the document that delegates power to the state
government and outlines the rules ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is an area where public opinion and public policy match in that they both heavily favor regressive
taxation (Brown et al., 2014). Tausanovitch and Warshaw (2013) have developed a means of
understanding political preference in comparison with public opinion and public policy to determine
whether a government is best serving the desires of its people. This type of tool would be very useful
for the state of Texas to use to determine whether the government is serving the desires of its
constituents. But, just because public opinion and public policy line up doesn t mean that the interests
of citizens are best served because some groups may still be left out and those groups may have more
needs than others. Texas current operational stance of pay as you go makes for a very tight budget
where the government cannot always afford to spend money on things the citizens of Texas may need.
For instance, Texas operates its roads with the same pay as you go mentality by opting for toll roads
(Brown et al., 2014). Toll roads receive some government funding through state issued bonds and the
collection of tolls after completion. This system is hardly fair for the citizens who do not use the toll
roads but still must subsidize them through taxpayer dollars when the toll revenue does not meet the
projected earnings. There are also many more citizens in Texas who live below the poverty line,
18.4% for Texas in comparison to 15.1% for the entire United States (Brown et al., 2014). With a
larger proportion of citizens in poverty the burden to the state becomes greater, especially when
funding remains low (Insert citation). Texas is just hurting its citizens by not being able to provide as
much support and assistance to them as possible. Texas was given the opportunity, along with every
other state in the union, to expand its offering of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. A sample of
public opinion was obtained

Argumentative Essay On Memorials
Memorializing events in the history of the world for any purpose has it s positives as well as the
negatives. Ranging from a memorial of a popular United States president from a loved one of a family,
memorials have generally served as a purpose of remembrance from the past of said event. The
purpose of the memorial is usually associated with a positive, uplifting feeling towards the deceased
individual or past event. While this is more or less simply defining what memorials are for, what is the
meaning behind them? What purpose do they serve besides the simplicity that they are? Important
messages from a few varied sources will give a differing viewpoint on memorials from one to another.
The first thought of memorials is the simple, generic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Memorials are meant to be striking in the sense that you will notice said memorial and donate some
attention to it. The views of these see this attention capturing as exceedingly high for some purposes.
Some memorials are outstanding in their craftsmanship and aesthetics. This makes people wonder
what could be lurking inside the memorial, or what is near that memorial. What we ve got here is a
formula, striking looks of the monument is almost guaranteed to attract some form of attention.
According to Source G, the analogy of tainting the planet with specific memorials are ridiculous, I
imagined taking a knife and cutting into the earth, opening it up, an initial violence and pain that in
time would heal. The grass would grow back, but the initial cut would remain a pure flat surface in the
earth with a polished, mirrored surface, much like the surface on a geode when you cut it and polish
the edge. The need for the names to be on the memorial would become the memorial; there was no
need to embellish the design further. The people and their names would allow everyone to respond and
remember. The ideals of such nonsensical placements of the memorials are just irritable at the

FBI Agent Found Dead In A Murder Suicide
Journalism, I used think was taking stories and publishing them in as many words as possible for the
largest profit. I believed it was just sharing a story that only several hundred people would get hear of.
However, the truth is that it has the power to reach the masses. It is the beacon of light in a night of
despair, the force which highlights the grievances of the people, but most of all, it is a weapon of mass
destruction with the potential to obliterate any hopes or aspirations. Journalism is a blinding light, yet
also the darkness it produces.
On November 18th, 2010, freelance reporter Jonathan Franklin shot footage of the miners from
Copiapo, Chile, who had been transported to the hospital after being trapped 2,300 feet underground

Being trusted by millions of people is more than an honor or privilege, but rather it is a power of
immense impact. It is a force that shapes the nation, for better or worse. As much good a journalism
can create, it also used to deceive the masses and incite unrest. Recently, an article circle Facebook
sites. The title was FBI Agent Found Dead in a Murder Suicide. It was published in an apparently
legitimate website. Truth is, it was a fake article published in a website meant to confuse readers.
Many similar websites and articles had been created by the author Jestin Coler. At first, his
motivations were heroic, trying to highlight the failed American government. During the 2016
elections, fake news about the candidates went rampant. Coler had 20 to 25 writers working for him
publishing article after article of slander and propaganda for either party. Some of the articles
published reached 1.5 million views in just ten days. Coler makes anywhere from $10 thousand to $30
thousand every month from ad revenue of people who visit his fake news sites. Despite his initial
good intentions, Coler willingly deceived readers into believing outlandish claims simply because it
was published in a news

  • 3. The United States And The 21st Century Essay Today, in the 21st century, English has become one of the most used languages around the world. It is so widely used that linguists have considered it to be the new lingua franca . Along with its language the United States is one of the most influential countries around the globe. There is no denying its presence in everything from international politics to entertainment. In fact, it is thought to be the only country that rivals the world s once great empires in terms of its global impact. In an article written by Mclean, she proclaims, the U.S dominates world politics by providing the language, ideas, and institutional frameworks around which much of the world turns (2). However, the United States did not just become an imperial power over night. From the middle of the 19th century till present time the U.S has been intervening in foreign lands. One country that has been immensely influenced by English colonization, to present day, is the Island of the Philippines. Whether it was consciously or not, the control of the Philippines by U.S after the Spanish American War was a small step towards world power. A brief look into Philippines history shows how much different the island would ve been without English rule. Although the Philippines were not pleased with the transfer of power over to America in the Treaty of Paris, the short 50 year rule proves to have had a major impact on Philippine culture, customs, and politics today. The archipelago, Philippines, is located ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wireless Network Method Using Smart Grid Communications WIRELESS NETWORK METHOD USING IN SMART GRID COMMUNICATIONS Ehsan Dolatshahi Independent Study April 22, 2015 Introduction The old generation of electrical power grid has taken care of our needs in the past. • 6. Greenland Norse Collapse The Choices Societies Make and the Challenges Surrounding Them The choices the Greenland Norse, the people of Easter Island, and the people of Haiti made directly contributed to their societal collapse. Their environmental fragility advanced their downfall, but ultimately their poor decision making led to their collapse. The Greenland Norse s and people of Easter Island s incorrect choices were mostly due to social challenges and reluctance to abandon traditions, but the incorrect choices of the Haitian people were due to selfness and impulsiveness. The Greenland Norse are an excellent example of a society that has collapsed because of the choices they have made, but they also serve as an example of a society who suffered great challenges when considering these alternative solutions. In particular, the Greenland Norse s lack of adaptability in the decision s they favored regarding hunting, livestock, the relationship with the Inuit, and the need for European identity drove their society to a collapse. The Norse came to Greenland with traditional hunting and livestock customs such as growing hay to feed their large number of livestock. • 10. The Role Of The Dublin Lockout Of 1913 James Larkin, the leader of the Irish Trade Union and the founder of the Irish Transport and General Workers Union once said The employers cannot carry on industry nor accumulate profits if they have not got the good will of the workers or their acquiescence in carrying on such industry. In 1911, over 300,000 people lived in Dublin. The unemployment rates were high and the average labourers wage was around one pound a week, and that was only if they had a full week of work. Living conditions were equally as inadequate as the working wages. Lydia Carroll and Enda Leaney found in a housing enquiry that 87,305 people lived in poverty, almost a third of Dublin s population. 80% of families lived in one room dwellings. According to the Public Health Report of 1913, 8,639 deaths were recorded, 1,444 were from tuberculosis and 4,642 were from nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and digestive diseases such as diarrhoea and pneumonia due to inadequate sanitary and nutrition.(Devine, pg 3 4) These conditions sparked many protests as workers became desperate. • 11. Personal Narrative- Homeless Man Essay Personal Narrative Homeless Man My friends often describe me as a cynic and a pessimist. For the most part, they re right. Sentiment loses value when it permeates one s attitudes and behavior just as the value of a commodity decreases as it becomes ubiquitous, so as a rule I reserve expressing sentiment for rare occasions that I deem worthy. Fortunately, even the harshest cynics are surprised sometimes. To begin, most people in my hometown know who Mike is. But I would bet that ninety nine percent of those people don t know Mike s name. Mike is a homeless man who lives at the public library. He didn t really attract my attention until several months ago; since then, I have found him impossible to ignore. At about eleven o clock ... As the light turned green, I sat for a moment, not moving, and asked myself what I was going to do. Then I accelerated slowly, waiting for the car on my left to pass as I changed over to the left lane. I made four left turns at four consecutive stoplights until I approached the library again. Pulling into the library s parking lot, I turned off my lights, radio, and heat. As I opened the car door, the cold air stung me like a quick slap to my face. Slowly and uncertainly, I walked toward Mike. The street was eerily quiet as I crossed. So was Mike. Staring at me unwaveringly, he said nothing as I approached. The crow s feet framing his eyes, the ridges in his forehead, and the crinkles in his cheeks still stand out in my mind. How many nights had he lain on that bench, covering his face as the wind whipped against it? Now he hugged his body tightly. He was wearing an old pair of tan khakis, a shirt that I couldn t see clearly, and a light multi colored jacket, its sleeves ending above his pale wrists, that was just slightly too small and clung to his body. As I gave him the money in my wallet, he took it slowly and stared at it for a second in disbelief. • 12. The Refugee Crisis And The Arab Spring The Refugee Crisis Nothing ever stays in the place it stars; everything has a habit of spreading. Throughout history, problems rarely ended in the places they started. Like the plague, Ebola, WWI/II, communism, the Arab spring, and now the Syrian crisis. The Arab Spring was a series of anti government protests, uprisings, and armed rebellions that spread across the Middle East in early 2011. The Arab spring protest against al Assad s Syrian government in the spring of 2011 evolved into an armed conflict between oppositions and government forces in certain cities and then evolved into a civil war. The Syrian civil war caused the large scale diaspora of Syrian citizens, leading to the Syrian refugee crisis. The Syrian refugee crisis led to psychological and physical problems for the refugees and various problems in neighboring host countries, but solutions have been effective so far. The refugee crisis led to physical problems like inadequate accommodation, lack of necessities, and comfort. In addition, Psychological problems, due to trauma that has been suffered and continuing problems with day to day living. • 14. My Family s Influence On My Life The word community maintains an assortment of meanings for each of us. These meanings are composed from various life experiences within our communities. To me, my communities include my family, friends, schools, work, and the town I live in. My communities have had an influence on who I have become as a person and continue to influence me on a daily basis. As I reflect back on the past twenty years, the community that has had the most impact on me is my family. Now, everyone has their own definition of family. So, when I say the word family, I am referring to my mom and dad. These two people have had the most influence on my life. From the very beginning, I began to shape the person I am based on the people my parents are. I can remember spending many hours with my dad in his shop, watching him diagnose mechanical problems. Then I would watch as he took apart a machine piece by piece, only to reassemble it exactly the same way once the problem at hand was resolved. As the years progressed, I became closer with my mom, spending the majority of my time with her. I would help her around the house with everyday chores. I can remember the joy I experienced when I was able to go to work with mom. I would watch in awe at the number of tasks my mother was responsible for at one time. How she would swiftly move from one task to another, handling the many interruptions, and balancing the numerous new tasks placed on her desk each day. Spending much of my time with ... It is the story of a dangerous journey between two British forts taken by two daughters of one of commander of one of the forts, their traveling companions and the Indians they encounter along the way. The story begins with Alice and Cora, the daughters of Colonel Munro, commander of Fort William Henry, heading out from Fort Edward, accompanied by Major Heyward, to visit their father. The three are guided by an Indian, Magua, who eventually betrays them, in an act of revenge, and leads them into a trap. Along the way, they encounter David Gamut, a religious signer from Conneticuit, who joins them on their trek to the fort. Later they meet Hawkeye and two Mohican Indians, Chingachgook and his son Uncas, who determine the Indian guide is an enemy. They attempt to capture him, but he escapes only to later along the journey reappear with reinforcements from his Huron Tribe. Guided and protected by Hawkeye and the Mohicans, the group continues to the Fort, the trek included several battles with the Hurons, one of which resulted in part of the group being captured and later rescued. I learned many interesting facts about Gregor Mendel who is the father of modern genetics and Marie Curie who discovered radioactivity used for x rays. Even though Mendel and Curie made it very far in the world, I feel that Mendel s contributions had more of an impact on science. • 37. Imagery of Snakes in Macbeth Essay In the biblical book of Genesis, Eve is tempted by a serpent to commit an ungodly act of eating a forbidden fruit. As a result of the snake s temptation, Eve eats the fruit, resulting in the presence of worldwide sin and the downfall of perfection. From this story of Adam and Eve, the figure of the snake has become generally associated with temptation, evil, and cynicism. William Shakespeare employs this symbolic imagery of snakes in Macbeth, to enhance the story of the rise and fall of Macbeth s power. Eve s ambition was to obtain knowledge of the world, yet in order to achieve it, she was forced to go against her God. In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth s incentive is power, which in this case would be a seat on the throne. In both cases, evil is a required side effect to gain their desired qualities. And this evil desire approaches both characters in the form of a serpent. Following Lady Macbeth s unsexing , the most descriptive use of serpentine imagery is revealed. Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to kill Duncan. By doing so, she uses a metaphor of a snake to portray the Macbeth s future evil actions. To beguile the time, Look like the time; bear welcome in your eye, Your hand, your tongue: look like th innocent flower, But be the serpent under t. (1.5.64 67). This simile is very similar to the cliché snake in the grass, which implies a stealthily treacherous and surprise action. In this passage, Lady Macbeth explains that in order to succeed, they must act normal around their guests, and conceal their evil desires. The snake thus represents Macbeth s hidden ambition, and more literally, Lady Macbeth s plan of action. However, the serpent, to which Lady Macbeth metaphorically speaks of in act one scene five, is not only these evil desires of Macbeth. It also represents the threat that Macbeth possesses to Duncan. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Henrietta Laks Lab Report By the early nineties, a scientist at Yale had used HeLa to discover that human cancer cells contain an enzyme called telomerase that rebuilds their telomeres. The presence of telomerase meant cells could keep regenerating their telomeres indefinitely. This explained the mechanics of HeLa s immortality: telomerase constantly rewound the ticking clock at the end of Henrietta s chromosomes so they never grew old and never died. Rebecca Skloot, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks As our cells divide and our DNA replicates, our telomeres provide a start and an end point for the enzyme DNA polymerase to attach to our chromosomes and replicate our DNA. By using a repeated, non coding section of DNA as the starting point for this replication, the telomeres allow our cells to replicate without damaging important genes at the attachment point of the replicating enzyme. When the telomeres of a cell reach this critical length and can no longer replicate without damaging the base pair sequences of the chromosomes themselves, programmed cell death occurs in the form of apoptosis. However, the length of a chromosome s telomere is not only a linear function of erosion, but also a function of how often telomerase rebuilds the strands by adding the TTAGGG base pair sequence. An Experiment to Determine Whether People Are Influenced by Leading Questions Abstract The purpose of the experiment was to determine whether people are influenced by leading questions. This experiment is a replication of an experiment conducted by Loftus and Palmer in 1974. In the experiment the independent variable was the verb used (contact, smash). The dependant variable was the speed estimated by the participants when recalling the picture of the crash from their memory. The results gave evidence that specific words could influence the retrieval of a memory. This is caused because of a schema associated with the verb. Allport, Postman (1947) and Loftus (1974) also support Bartlett s idea of reconstructive memory. Loftus mainly focused on the reliability of eyewitness testimonies. As done in this experiment, Loftus and Palmer conducted a study on the effects of wording a question differently and how that would affect the answer. In the experiment the researchers used two different verbs on two different test groups. One was contact the other was smashed . The effect of this was a change in the speed estimated by the participants. The verb contact gave an average speed of 32mph while the verb smash gave an average of 41 mph in the experiment conducted by Loftus. There is a positive correlation between word use and how memory is retrieved because of it. Yuille and Cutshall (1986) criticized the findings of Loftus and Palmer.
