The relationship of Delia Jones makes sense to reader as it is an image of some of marriages in
today s world. In the short story, Delia Jones has faced various hardships with her terrible
husband. Sykes is mean, unfaithful, and cruel man. He always beats Delia just for no reason.
Two months after the wedding, he had given her the first brutal beating (Hurston 733). He
always thinks of his wife as an ugly and skinny. Therefore, He has a love affair with another
woman named Bertha. This upsets Delia because Sykes only lovea Bertha because she is fat,
and hate her, because she is skinny. As she carries on her laundry business and church activities,
he returns to the arms of the mistress whose curves excite him more than his wife s spare
strength (Ryan 72). The actions of Sykes Jones destroy the motivation and desire of her way of
living. She later starts defending herself by beginning to voice against her husband. Delia starts
defending herself and home when she yelled, that ole snaggle toothed black woman you runnin
with ain t comin heah to pile up on mah sweat and blood. You ain t paid for nothin on this place,
and Ah m gointer stay right heah till Ah m toted out foot foremost (Hurston 733). However, Emily
Grierson relationship with Homer Barron is very confusing. Although, it is not clearly states in the
short story, but Miss Emily loves for Homer
