Legend Of The Ghost Dog Analysis
The novel Legend of the Ghost Dog , written by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel, is a thriller and
mystery tale about a young girl named Anita (although is known as Tee throughout the book), on
an expedition she attended to a small cabin located in the Alaska wilderness, in the town of
Nome, with her father and her younger brother Jack, and another young girl that she befriended
named Quin. This adventure starts from not Tee s perspective, but from an older woman named
Dodie about her childhood raising Siberian Huskies with her family, these chapters would
consistently reoccur in the novel. The legend began as just a silly yet spine tingling fable of a
dark looming creature known as the Shadow that lived deep in the Alaskan woods near a creek
referred to as Dorothy Creek, where just so happen Tee, her little brother and her father were
residing near, however escalated to a conundrum about the Shadow that turned out to just be a dog,
a jet black Huskywith pale blue eyes with a strong broad body, discovered by the two young girls
after taking Tee s beagle on a walk in the snow. While Tee s and Jack s Mother was in Japan for two
weeks during their spring break for law work, the siblings went with their dad, a writer, who was
on the hunt for a storyabout how the relationship between dogs and man have become less and
less throughout the years because of snowmobiles, there for people were not requiring dogs to
pull sleds from place to place. Thus, Tee s father begins to work with a

The Conflict Between Judaism And The Hellenistic And Roman...
As dissimilar as they were, the encounter between Judaism and the Hellenistic and Roman worlds
with the latter taking on much of what the Greeks stood for should not be considered as a clash
between civilizations. Doing so, I believe, would render a complex society and a dynamic process
into an absolute and a static one. The postexilic period had obviously brought Jews into contact and
in activity with the surrounding non Jewish communities in which they now lived; however, this
social and commercial interaction with the non Jews was enhanced, like never before, with the
emergence of the Greco Roman eras. The Jews often managed to retain control over their own
internal affairs and found favor before various rulers, but pagan ritual, idolatry, and Greco Roman
philosophies became almost impossible to avoid.
These new realities posed a serious challenge to Judaism and Alexander the Great s idea of uniting
the world by pushing for a common language and culture, Homonoia, only served to accelerate and
intensify this challenge. Yet, the very nature of this Hellenic culture would, itself, allow the Judean
society to establish various paths of accommodation to the conquerors. Thus, in reality, Hellenism
was but a framework that enabled Judaism to flourish within a new setting without compromising
its indigenous and unique character. The translation of the Scriptures into Greek, precisely because
the Hellenized Jews were unable to read it in Hebrew, is an example of

Carry Concealed Weapons
There have been at least two school shootings a month in 2015. Of the 52 shootings, 21 have
been at colleges and universities, 15 at high schools, three at middle schools, 10 at elementary
schools, two at preschools, and one on a school bus (52 School Shootings 1). With all these school
shootings, why wouldn t you want to carry a gun? Guns can protect people. If a shooter confronts
a person and they see that person is armed they might think twice about what they are doing.
Shouldn t you feel some sort of protection and self defense if you have a gun? Even though some
say teachers and students should not carry concealed weapons, they should be allowed to carry
concealed weapons on college campuses because of self defense, protection, and it... Show more

Fernandez claims that, Supporters say it will make college campuses safer by not preventing
licensed gun owners from defending themselves and possibly saving lives should a mass shooting
occur, such as the one that unfolded at Virginia Tech Universityin 2007 (Fernandez 1). If someone
wants to protect themselves why would you want to stop them? If they are trained and
responsible and could possibly save lives would you want to be the person to stop them and say
no? For example, say a student sees a problem going on in the parking lot of the campus. And the
student knows they can stop it because they have a weapon in their car. The student can then grab
the gun and try to stop the problem before it gets out of hand. Your car is an extension of your
home. This provides safety for college campuses because they know that the students and teachers
carrying those weapons are responsible and trained and can possibly save lives if a shooting were
to occur there.
Out of all of the school shootings that happen a year, there are at least two a month. School
shootings can happen anywhere at any time, like preschools, high schools, elementarys. This is
why teachers and students should carry concealed weapons. Teachers and students should be able
to carry weapons because it is a way for self defense, protection, and safety. As can be seen, teachers
and students should be allowed to carry on college

Tuck Everlasting Essay
Have you ever wondered why books seem to always be better than movies based on that book?
Well I am here to tell you why. The example I will focus on is Natalie Babbitt s Tuck Everlasting
vs Disney s interpretation of Tuck Everlasting. I prefer Natalie Babbitt s Tuck Everlasting over
Disney s Tuck Everlasting because of the imagery, the suspense, and the characterization.
One example of the imagery being better in the book is the forest. In the book the forest sounds
big and beautiful. But, in the movie the forest is quite overgrown and there was not as much
wildlife as I expected. Even though the forest wasn t as beautiful as the book portrayed it, it is still
quite an amazing sight. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the book Winnie s parents were less interested in finding their daughter than in the movie. I
liked this because it made Winnie have another reason to run away. Also, in the book the parents
were quicker to give up the spring to the man in the yellow suit. Another example of why the
book has better characterization than the movie is Winnie. Winnie was five years younger in
the book which gave her time to mature and grow throughout the book. As opposed to in the
movie where Winnie was 15 and she did not have as much room to mature and grow. Another
aspect of Winnie that was better in the book was her relationship with Jesse. In the book there
wasn t as much romance between Winnie and Jesse which I liked because honestly, in the
movie, I thought their relationship was an unnecessary side note. The final reason that the
characterization was better in the book was the Tucks. In the movie, all the Tuck s opinions
were generalized and we didn t get to hear each Tuck s opinion as much as in the book. An
example of this is Miles s and Jesse s views on immortality, in the movie we didn t get to hear their
differing opinions on immortality as opposed to the book where we herd both their opinions.
As you can see Natalie Babbitt s book Tuck Everlasting is much better than Disney s rendition of
Tuck Everlasting for three key points. These points were the imagery, the suspense and the
characterization. You might

The National Youth Leadership Forum
Growing up in a predominately African American school district, I would go several days
without ever being reminded of my racial identity. I was considered part of the majority
throughout all of grade school. However, this all changed as I began to stray from my normal
crowd and participate in academic enrichment and pre medical programs. The very first time that
I was reminded that I was the minority, and therefore inferior to many was when I attended a
program called NYLF. The National Youth Leadership Forum allowed me to spend ten days at a
medical forum with high school students from all over the world. When I arrived, I looked
around and realized that out of about two hundred kids, only about fifteen looked like me. I also
noticed that they had all congregated to the same area and had essentially secluded themselves.
Determined not to stay in my comfort zone and expose myself to new things, I decided to sit at a
different table. A few days into the program, several disappointing things became clear. I began to
observe ignorant remarks, disapproving glares, and belittling attitudes from many of my
surrounding peers. Admittedly, it did make me somewhat upset to know that so many felt that
because I was a black girl, I did not deserve to be at this program. It became evident that many of
my opinions, thoughts, and responses to activities were quickly discounted on most occasions. I
wondered if I had made the wrong decision by branching off from my African Americanpeers.

Discipline Should Not Become Child Abuse
Every year more than 3 million reports of children getting abuse are made in the United States
involving more than 6 million children. 1,640 children die as a result of child abuse, between four
and five children a day. Many parents don t realize that their way of disciplining is actually
considered abusing the child. Situation s like this happen not just in the United States but
everywhere and anywhere either by parents, daycares, school, etc. Disciplineshould never become
child abuse. All parents discipline their children by teaching them appropriate ways to behave. It
obviously takes takes time and patience. Knowing that discipling is to teach your children can
guide you in deciding how to react to their misbehavior. It is a parent s job to discipline their
child so that the child grows up knowing what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Parent s
can consider what it is that they need to learn from the situation. For example, if the 11 year old
is hitting her younger sister when she get s angry, she may need to learn more appropriate ways to
express her anger and frustration. Wise parents will use childhood to prepare a child for success as

to children is one of the most essential responsibilities of a parent and providing consistent and
positive discipline helps grow children into responsible adults. Let s together make children look

The Security Of Airport Security Screening
In the last thirteen years there have been major changes made in airport security. What brought the
changes and shook America to its core, is a day in history that no one will soon forget. Since 9/11,
five attempted terrorist attacks on U.S. airliners and airports have made airport security a continued
priority. Shortly after the 9/11 attacks, Congress passed the Aviation and Transportation Security
Act, which created the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and put federal employees in
charge of airport securityscreening (Bajoria). The process for airport security screenings lacked
the ability to secure a plane which caused the terrorist to be able to board the plane with ease.
There are those that argue that the increase in security has cost the country too much money and
does more harm than good. The U.S. has spent more than a trillion dollars to increase the
security in all the airports across the nation. According to Paul Borowsky and Gregory Delone,
pilots were asked to complete surveys to what they believed needed to be changed. In his book,
the pilot wrote that policies were designed to enhance security, however, he believed that they didn
t take into consideration input from the pilots of the airliners that the policies were made to
protect. There is also the argument that the increased security was an invasion of privacy.
Passengers were having all their belongings placed on a table and gone through which allowed
other passengers to see

History of Mayan Culture
History of Mayan Culture The mysterious culture of ancient Maya once covered a vast geographic
area in Central and South America. Their civilization extended to parts of what are now Mexico,
Honduras, and El Salvador, and most of Guatemala and Belize. The Mayans first settled in 1500BC.
The Mayans environment consisted of tropical rainforests, which was also one of their main
sources of resources, they turned the jungles into great cities. The rainforest would provide them
with food, clothing, weapons, tools, and many more useful items. It rained almost everyday, but the
temperature was not cold at least in the daytime. The environment played a major role in what the
Mayans culture became, they needed rain and heat to survive both the... Show more content on

Each large city had one supreme chief who ruled for life, upon his death a son or brother took
over. In some cases wife took over. If no family successor was available a new ruler was selected
from the upper class. Crime was also an issue for the Mayans. Criminals were punished in
different ways according to what they had done. A thief would become the servant of his victim.
Murderers were put to death, sometimes as part of ritual sacrifices. For minor crimes, hair was
cut as a sign of disrespect. There were also class separations like the ruling class and the common
people. Warriors were a separate class themselves too. In battle the Mayans fought with wooden
clubs, flint knives, spears, and slingshots. Weapons and tools were made from bone, parts of
animals, soil, stone, metal/copper, and wood. RELIGION The Mayans were very religious
people; their religion regulated almost everything in their life. Priests were the most important
people in the tribes. The Mayans believed their gods had destroyed and recreated their earth
several times that is why they always tried to please their gods with sacrifices. Each God
represented something for them. Their Supreme Being and creator of the universe was called
Hunan Ku . The next important gods were the sun and moon gods. Kinich Ahau was the sun god.

Leak About Thomas Perez Essay
Leak About Thomas Perez
Leaks of government affairs have always been common in Washington DC. When a person first
hears the word leak, they most likely think of a story that was not meant to be published or shown
to the public, but this is not always the case. Some politicians or government officials will leak
information just to see a reaction from the general public. This tactic is called a trial balloon. This
tactic is seen in an article that was posted in The New York Times in 2014 about the possible
nomination of Labor Secretary, Thomas Perez, for Attorney General.

A trial balloon allows the White House to test the response to a potential nominee and unleash a
round of public vetting before the president puts his prestige on the line . This shows that a trial
balloon is just a common tool for politicians in government to utilize. The president wanted to put
out his potential nomination in order to see the response he would get.
The author of the article then goes on to talk about the response from both sides of the political
parties. The author states that the nomination of Perez would be strongly supported from minority
groups while Republicans would strongly disagree with this nomination. The author shows no
preference as to whether he agrees with the President but instead examines both sides and the
different responses he would most likely get. He states that the Republicans think that Perez is just
going to bring in more illegal immigrants to take American jobs and that democrats believe his
modest upbringing and the fact that he worked his way through college would make him a good
candidate. President Obama can use all of this information when deciding on who he will
eventually nominate for Attorney

The Act Of The Indian Tribes Of This Province
The Act to encourage the Gradual Civilization of the Indian Tribes of this Province, and to amend
the Laws respecting Indians was an Act with the goal of placing indigenous people at the same
level as British North American citizens. In essence, indigenous people would have the same or
similar legal rights such that all distinctions would be removed between them and British North
Americans. Furthermore, this Act was supposed to grant and help indigenous people gain rights
with respect to property ownership.
This Act had fifteen regulations that were applicable only to indigenous people who decided on
becoming enfranchised Indians and hence, British subjects. In becoming a British subject, these
individuals would lose their First Nations status. Therefore, while this Act may appear to help
Indigenous people, its ultimate goal was to create new subjects for the crown and hence, remove
Frist Nation s status.
Examples of the type of regulations established in this Act are as followed: 1) The act shall apply
only to individuals who are Indians, or have Indian blood, or are intermarried with Indians.
Therefore, these individuals must be part of an Indian Tribe which resides on some land that is
their own and was never surrendered to the Crown. Furthermore, it is only these particular
individuals who are entitled to the regulations of this Act and of other Acts. 2) A commissioner will
be appointed such that they are in charge of examining the Indians who want to

Swing Low, By Miriam Toews
Swing Low, a novel and memoir written by Miriam Toews, explores her father Mel Toews life
leading to his suicide. Mel Toews is difficult to fully understand as it stems from Miriam s view of
her father; however, she succeeds in portraying her father by convincing the readers he is narrating
his own story through a believable recapitulation of his life.
Before the memoir begins, the author clearly points out that she will be writing as her father while
retelling his life story after gathering information about his life. The prologue is the main
reminder that the memoir is written by the daughter about her father who had taken his life, and
later on in the epilogue as well. More importantly, the author takes away the surprise of the novel
by mentioning her father took his own life (Toews 1) which tells the readers exactly how the
story will end. In spite of revealing the ending, Toews uses suspense as a literary technique to
pique the reader s curiosity and investment by wondering what leads to his suicide. However
with this fact brought out from the very beginning, the reader focuses on the life Mel Toews
leads to explain his spiral descent in depression. Rather, through symbolic scenes such as the egg
scene or the dream of finding a home, the author presents eerie foreshadows implying the subject s
aimlessness in the world he finds himself in. For example, in the egg scene, he states [w]ho will
keep [him] warm before [he] breaks? (89). The quotation is a potential

First PostThere were many culprits in the subprime loan debacle in the United States starting
somewhere around the middle of 2006. Gilbert (2011) state many levels of contributors participated
in this mortgage lending crisis. Gilbert (2011) portends some of these included loan applicants,
mortgage brokers, lenders, individual mortgage packagers, agencies that rate mortgages, investment
brokers, and advisers, and purchasers of the collateralized mortgage obligations (Gilbert, 2011).
People are advised to establish credit early in life to be able to buy homes and automobiles to live
comfortably in the future to obtain the American Dream . Therefore, a person will need to build a
credit history before a lending institution allows them to borrow funds. With that, a person who
manages his credit well would not have been included in the subprime lending scandal because
they would not be considered a risk. However, those individuals that had sub standard credit scores
of 570 and less were offered loans which they could not afford and caused a major default in the
financial industry.

In Theodore Roosevelt s The Hun within Our Gates (1917), the complete lack of adversity in
political views is expressed. The idea that any citizen who is not in die hard favor of World War
I is a traitor to the country is explained through Roosevelt s own explanation. Along with this
theme comes the representation of the total lack of diversity that was implemented in this time.
Not necessarily in race, but in ideas. Men like Roosevelt thought that there was one way to view
the country and if not that way than the ideas are wrong. Although some people still think that
way today, there is a lot more acceptance of broader views and a larger variety of opinions. Can

Modern Conventional Psychiatry ( Kraepelin )
A psychotic condition, or a state of psychosis, is where an individual begins to lose touch with
reality by experiencing hallucinations and delusions, and believes them to be real when in fact they
are not (Freudenreich, Weiss, Goff, 2008; APA, 2013; Darton, 2013; NHS, 2014; MedlinePlus,
2015). Modern conventional psychiatry(Kraepelin, 1987; Shorter, 1992, 1997; Alexander
Selesnick, 1966) uses a predominately biomedical approach to the diagnoses of mental health
conditions, which is particularly so for patients of psychotic conditions (Hunter MacAlpine, 1963;
Mayer Gross, Slater, Roth, 1975; Guze, 1989; Shorter, 1997). The most recently revised diagnostic
criteria for the psychiatric diagnoses can be found in the DSM V (APA,... Show more content on

In order for the drug treatment approach to continue, psychotic conditions must be approached
using a biomedical perspective.
But despite all the influential evidence for this biomedical approach, it is important to note that it
is it is not without its flaws (Read, Bentall, Fosse, 2009). For instance, there is no robust evidence
for any genetic cause (Read, 2004; Joseph, 2006; Sanders et.al, 2008; Hamilton, 2008; Bentall,
2009), with the evidence for drug intervention argued to be just as questionable (Jones et.al, 2006;
Newcomer et.al, 2004; Guo et.al, 2006; Bobes et.al, 2007; Sikich et.al, 2008). Overall, the
biomedical psychiatric approach to the treatment of psychosis and madness is incomplete and
problematic.
The movement of ant psychiatry (Cooper, 1967; Roth, 1973) and the debate of as to whether
mental illness is actually a myth (Szasz, 1972), presents even more concern over the status and
usefulness of psychiatric diagnosis. There is also a huge debate as to whether labelling a patient
with a psychiatric diagnosis for a psychotic condition, and therefore an illness, is not in the
patients best interests and is actually more for the benefit of the psychiatrist (Parsons, 1951,
1972; Foucault, 1973; Conrad, 1992; Shilling, 2002; Padamsee, 2011). This is especially a concern
as some views will argue that psychosis and madness need not be regarded as an illness, like

Benefits Of Hypnosis
Have you ever thought of using hypnosis for another purpose besides fun? There are many
beneficial uses for hypnosis that have an outcome for a person. It seems to make things feel like
a dream when unable to accomplish these things awake and conscious. Hypnosis is defined as . . .
a trancelike state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily
accepted by the subject (Merriam Webster). Hypnosiscan have a meaning for many things, not
only for fun at an event where there is hypnotist to make people do enjoyable things and everyone
laughs at them. There are serious reasons to putting someone under hypnosis as well. While being
in deep hypnosis, eye movement slows down and it seems to be state of sleep that... Show more

Which is the fact that one can stop what they are doing, but wants to keep doing it even though it
may not be what someone wants to do. The person being hypnotized has the inner portion observing
what the outside actions are and the outside body doing whatever is being told. The brain chooses to
listen and do what it is being told, but understands on the inside what is happening. If someone did
not want to do something while under hypnosis, they would know and not do something crazy
they would later regret. The subject s inner conscious would take over and deny the hypnotist
directions because they are not in a dream like manner. This connecting to the sociocognitive
approach, a person keeps their social role while being under hypnosis. They would stop doing
something if they truly did not want to do something and their inner self knows the limits of what
is too much to do. Also being under hypnosis, the person can recall people in their real life such as
names while following directions and pretending they are someone else that the hypnotist tells
someone to be. This theory is an opinion that a hypnotist gives hints to the person being hypnotized
what they should do or act like (Wade and Tavris, 2002, pg. 161) . This also states that people can
not have strengths that they do not when they are under, they just broaden up an imagination more
than some people think is possible. The theory dissociation explains that a person listens to the
hypnotist and then becomes what the hypnotist tells them, while the sociocognitive theory explains
that someone can get hypnotized and while they are hypnotized they know their limits. These
theories have some of the same ideas, but overall, do not believe the same

The Marriage Of Maria Norler Analysis
In the article War Stories: The Search for a Usable Past in the Federal Republic of Germany
(1995), Robert G. Moeller, a professor of history at the University of California, Irvine, focuses
on the topical question of a treatment of the past by Germans in the post World War II Germany.
The author argues that to find a single viewpoint as for the Third Reich period is difficult and the
binary opposition of perpetrator and victim tends to impact the process of the national self
awareness and self identification greatly (1048). This results in an uncertainty of an ethical
assessment of the historical past and, what is more important, demonstration of a selective

Maria Braundirected by Rainer Werner Fassbinder(1945 1982), a West German filmmaker and a
representative of the New German Cinema movement of the 1960s 1980s, taking into
consideration the ideas revealed in the article by Moeller. In this way, the main idea of the essay
is that in his film, Fassbinder reflects Moeller s concept of the selective memory by means of
dehumanization of film characters while showing the historical post war period of the German

The main character of The Marriage is a woman named Maria. At the beginning of the film, she
marries a Wehrmacht officer Hermann Braun in the city of Berlin, which experiences an artillery

Abraham Lincoln s Accomplishments During his Presidency...
Today our nations built upon equality and the idea that every man is created equal. Abe Lincoln
helped establish equality and the mindset that comes with these beliefs were introduced to early
americans from Abraham Lincoln. He helped abolish slavery and introduce a new era and shape
america how it is today. Not only is he one of the most prominent leaders of the Civil War but an
early influence and catalyst on the later Civil Rights Movement.
Abe Lincoln accomplished many things during the civil war. Abe Lincoln was a great leader and
president. He ended slavery in the U.S. during his time period. During the year 1860, slavery was
one of the biggest problems in america. Abe Lincoln, president at the time, was against slavery.

If the U.S. had split apart after the civil war the world would be a lot different to this day. The
emancipation helped the northern states. After the emancipation proclamation was passed the slaves
were still being discriminated. A famous quote from abe Lincoln was Those who deny freedom to
others deserve it not for themselves , this quote means that abe believed everyone should be treated
equal and if those who did not should not have freedom for themselves(Goodreads). Lincoln
believed in equality and thats all he wanted for america, is to have equality throughout the whole
country.
Abraham Lincoln influenced america and other historical figures. Martin Luther King Jr. and
Lincoln were one of the most prominent leaders when it came to slavery. He showed courage to
stand up for what s right and fight against for what s wrong. Without Abe Lincoln we would not
be in the position and success we have in the modern world (smithsonian). Abe Lincoln was a
Progressive man , he made strides to free the slaves and to abolish slavery(smithsonian1). He was
one of the most known and recognized leaders in american history.
The end of Abraham Lincoln was not the end of his ideas. His public speaking and ideas will
forever be imprinted in the history books and minds of all that he has influenced. His preachings

Sexual Masochism Disorder
Sexual Masochism Disorder I found the inclusion of sexual masochism disorder (and sexual
sadism disorder) in the DSM 5 interesting and outdated. Sexual Masochism Disorder is a
Paraphilic Disorder which is defined as recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges,
or behaviors generally involving i) non human objects, ii) the suffering or humiliation of oneself or
one s partner, or iii) children or other non consenting persons that occur over a period of at least 6
months with a proposed new definition of any powerful and persistent sexual interest other than
sexual interest in copulatory or pre copulatory behavior with phenotypically normal, consenting
adult human partners. (DSM 5) The DSM 5 criteria for Sexual Masochism... Show more content on

I know that my proclivity toward dangerous sex can be precarious and even perilous with an
untrained partner but I am careful to choose partners that are well versed in the art of sadism, as
are most masochists. While I do suffer from mental health diagnoses of Anxiety and Depression,
I have never been diagnosed with SMD, or another Paraphilia based disorder. I do believe that
for most people who practice or seek out dangerous sex it is because of the thrill of participating
in deviant behavior. It is no surprise to me that 4.6% of women have reported enjoying pain in a
sexual experience, and 30 50% of women fantasize about. Based on the information I gathered in
regards to Paraphilia and Paraphilia Disorders it does seem fitting that sexual sadism disorder
and sexual masochism disorder be changed to paraphilia behaviors, if not entirely removed. It
seems that if these disorders are changed, and there is no longer the fear of criminal charges or
medicalization of said sexual behaviors, there is a higher likelihood that those who participate in
said behaviors will come forward and seek help if they do feel disturbed or the behavior is

Comparing Novel and Film Version of Snow Falling on...
Comparing Novel and Film Version of Snow Falling on Cedars
It is no easy task to create a work through writing or film that has an impact on society. In writing,
one must discuss and analyze a relevant topic that will have an impact on the readers. One must
also present stunning sensory images through words in order to create a complete understanding for
the reader. In filmmaking it is not much different, but there must be striking visual imagery in
combination with a fitting musical score in order to give the viewer of the film the full experience.
There must also be historical accuracy, both in writing and film. In either case, it can take years to
create such a captivating piece of work. David Guterson s novel Snow ... Show more content on

Hatsue had grown up to marry Kabuo, the man on trial, and Ishmael had lost an arm in the war
against the Japanese. Ishmael was also one of the reporters covering Kabuo s trial, and found
himself tempted to ignore the ethics of journalism taught to him by his father in order to satiate his
bitterness toward Hatsue for ending their childhood romance. In delving deeper into the issues that
deal with Kabuo s trial, the effects of war, and the romance between young Ishmael and Hatsue,
Snow Falling on Cedars explores human emotion and behavior with astonishing accuracy.
In the novel, David Guterson spent significant amounts of time exploring the way language can be
used to convey a story line. Guterson went back and forth with scenes from past and present in the
novel, combining both and portraying them thickly with literary devices. One of the most
predominant literary devices in the novel was the use of imagery. The prevalent image of the story
is the snow as it fell upon the cedars that populated San Piedro Island. Guterson invoked this image
on page after page throughout the novel, making it apparent that the snow veiling the cedar forests
could be a metaphor for the way prejudices veil honesty and truth in human behavior. The fact that
the island was stricken with the worst snowstorm in twenty years during Kabuo Miyamoto s trial
was further evidence to such a

Winnie s Dramatic Story in “Happy Days by Samuel Beckett...
Samuel Beckett s play, Happy Days, portrays a woman, Winnie, buried in the ground, first up to
her waist, then up to her neck, determined to live out her meaningful life. Although her situation is
hopeless because she has no idea how she got there, Winnie trusts that her life is meaningful and
truly believes that there is nothing she can do to change it. Consequently, Winnie focuses on trivial
details to pass each day. Beckett definitely succeeds in making this character s life dramatic by
consuming her life with habits and rituals. Winnie s life is focused around certain details that help
her cope with her anxiety of existence. Beckett shows that internally Winnie is afraid of what

Perhaps an evident way Beckett portrays Winnie s dramatic story is through the variation of the
phrase this will have been a happy day that she repeats throughout the play. Winnie proclaims this
only after Willie acknowledges her existence. Each time Willie ignores her, Winnie s
conversation becomes futile and she starts to get the feeling that her hopes are false because she
spends the majority of her day telling stories and yearning for her husband s response. Her
happy days seem to be when she experiences human interaction. Winnie understands that she talks
a lot but she simply talks in hopes to generate some sort of human response. Winnie is
overdramatic when Willie even utters a tiny word and proclaims that it is truly a happy day for
her, once again renewing her hopes of a happy life. She seems to be a typical dramatic romantic
woman who is desperate to keep her relationship with her husband alive. Winnie even admits, I
am not merely talking to myself, that is in the wilderness, a thing I could never bear to do for any
life of time (756). She understands that speaking aloud to no audience is simply just internal
thought and is fearful for that day when she will have nobody to talk to. Winnie repeats simply
gaze before me with compressed lips (756) throughout the play portraying her fear that one day she
will have to resort to staring into space in internal thought only.

Istj Application Essay Example
ISTJ So what is an ISTJ and who am I? As described above, I am a quiet and reserved individual
who uses experience to make analytical decisions, but only after a lot of thought and analyzing! In
the workplace, I keep to myself for the most part and do not do a lot of conversing with
management that does not pertain to work. Most of my recent professional life has been leadership
roles, so having someone working under me has been common for many years. In the workplace,
I feel like I get along better with them. I feel that I can interact amongst the employees on the
floor and be myself more than what I can with the guys dressed in suits. My positions are usually
one of a supervisor or department manager, so I am a liaison between the entry level employees
and upper management. Some people seem to get their bonus points by congregating with
managers in their offices, but I m more comfortable amongst the hourly workers that get the work
completed. Obviously, I can communicate with upper management, but keep it strictly
professional with them. I keep work relationships minimal because I have been burned by them
before and have learned from it. I hired friends to work as assistant managers under me for a
period of time and saw my store begin to decline. I understood then that I could not have close
friends in important positions under me because the inability to separate work from social life, and
discipline and be taken serious, were too difficult at the time. Outside of work,

The Church Of The Holy Cross Lutheran Church
On Saturday 7, 2015, Alex, Michael and I drove to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church located in
11515 Ashcake Road Ashland, Virginia (about a 5 minute drive away from campus). The first
thing that caught my attention was the external structure of the church. The architecture of the
church is old school and it looks like a wooden house. Inside the church we could immediately
tell that there were at least two floors. The top floor was where the altar was located and where
the congregation took place. As soon as we stepped into the top floor, a really nice lady
approached us and told us to sign a book of guests that everyone that attends the service had to
sign. After we signed in, the pastor approached us and we told him that we were attending the
service for a research project and that we were students from Randolph Macon College, he
seemed thrilled to be able to help us. The service itself was much laid back and relatively small.
There were 25 people at the church on that Saturday, and they were all very friendly. The pastor
was very enthusiastic and welcoming to us. At the beginning of the service, he introduced us to
everyone in the church and he encouraged us to research as much as we wanted to. In my
opinion, this service was very similar to a catholic worship, or similar to the service that I used to
attend when I lived in Venezuela. There was a lot of sitting, reading, standing, and singing. As we

Life Chances And The Quality Of Life
Life chances are how likely some ones like will turn out given certain factors. These life chances
contribute to your quality of life and your chances at success. Max Weber lists property
ownership, education, health care, food, clothing and shelter, as the main factors that define an
individual s life chances (Reference.com). For example a life chance would be if you were born
into poverty and a broken family. The chances of you have a high social status, and good quality
life are lower. In my personal life I have faced many life chances that would limit a person by
definition of life chances. I was born into a poor family that was broke. I have two parents that
are criminals and addicts. From the time I was born my life chances where against me. I
personally can see how life chances are truly how our society works. Because of my family s
situation I was luckily put into a boarding school for poor families. I lived their year round with
my brothers and sisters because we didn t go home because it was not safe. By being in this
school I was being given a better life chances. The school ended at 8th grade, and I was lucky
enough to get into another boarding school that deals with families in the same situations. Not all
my brothers and sisters were lucky enough to get in. My twin sister was not accepted and she went
to public school. She was bounced between many aunt and uncles during her high schoolyears and

Price Control Essay
The price ceiling is the maximum price a seller is allowed to charge for a product or service. An
impact on society includes when the prices are so high of a product, that no one can buy it. A
price floor is the lowest legal price a product or service can be sold at. When market price is at its
lowest, it may still be too high for consumers to purchase products. Governments can intervene for
any purpose, and they are the ones who set these price controls.
Governments may intervene in the market system to fix prices above or below equilibrium if they
believe that it is in the public interest to do so. Governments may intervene in the provision,

Because consumers aren t paying as much for the product, producers will not be able to produce
as much at the lower price, and consumers will demand more because the product is cheaper. The
end result will be consumers not being able to buy the product since there is not enough being
made. For example, the price of milk was $2 per litre, and has now been reduced to $1 per litre.
This will be great for consumers as they can buy more milk for less, until it runs out. Therefore
price ceilings have a good impact on consumers.
For producers, price ceilings don t have as good an impact as it does on consumers. Since the
consumers are paying much less money for goods and services, they simply cannot afford to
make any products. It will have a harmful effect on producers, as their surplus will decrease,
resulting in them not making as much product. For example, if the price of lettuce decreases from
$7 to $5, then that means a decrease in the amount of money producers are getting. They will not
have enough money to grow lettuce, so there will be none or little lettuce harvested to be sold.
This means that price ceilings have a large impact on producers, and not in a good way.
If the government puts in a price ceiling, then the quantity demanded will exceed the quantity
supplied, meaning that not enough goods or services will be supplied to satisfy demand. This
situation is called a shortage. Because price ceilings are installed in the interests of

In the early nineteen hundreds, dinosaur fossils were discovered and recognized around the globe.

Music During The 19th Century

Burke s Nakedness Of Adam And Eve
Burke identifies a norm of a naked expulsion of Adam and Eve beginning by 1500, which
contradicts the biblical account God made coats of skins and clothed them before forced to leave
the Garden of Eden. According to Burke, until about the early 15th century, all Italian iconography
of Adam and Eve expulsions were fully clothed or with covered genitalia. Afterwards, Adam and
Evewere shown to be fully naked post expulsion from the Garden as seen in Masaccio s infamous
Expulsion from Paradise (1423). Burke s ultimate observation on Adam and Eve s portrayal of
nakedness after being expelled from Eden is that it serves a purpose beyond the fall of man. An
array of various classical texts, Vitruvius On Architecture (c. 15th), Diodorus Library of History

Comparative of Henrik IbsenВґs A DollВґs House and...
Within one s lifetime, the mark to finding oneself is being able to overcome hardships and
difficulties in order to unravel the full potential concealed within them. From being manipulated
and deceived, this manages to bring about an ability hidden within oneself that can only be
triggered by experiencing what it is like to be a victim of deception. In A Doll s House by Henrik
Ibsenand As You Like Itby William Shakespeare, each author entraps their protagonists with the
role of being manipulative or the victim of being manipulated to further enhance the author s
purpose of revealing or unlocking the hidden potential that arose within the characters.
Throughout A Doll s House, Torvald views Nora s actions as being deceiving not only towards
him but also towards her family. However, Nora gain her perspective on her own actions and
begins observing it differently than Torvald s. The play states, It was me they told that his life

administration of antibiotics, TPN, and chemotherapy treatment. Remarkable improvements over
the past decade have been made in order to shrink the rate of CLABSIs with measures and ongoing
research to continue to diminish the number of central line infections seen in hospitals.... Show

With the original aim of CLABSI prevention aimed primarily at intensive care units, this new
approach sets its sights on decreasing rates in hospital patients in general acute care settings where
a reported 23,000 CLABSIs occurred in 2009. These statistics guided Teleflex Inc. to create a new
FDA approved PICC in 2011 with both antimicrobial along with antithrombogenic effects. A
California hospital that consistently utilizes evidence based research conducted in house research
in 2014 to test the effectiveness of the new PICC and determine if it would truly decrease infecftion
rates. This testing was done using an intervention group, whom had the antimicrobial PICC
inserted, and a nonintervention group, whom had the standard PICC inserted. Both groups were
predominantly equal in terms of gender, race, age, and medical status and both received equal
treatment using the central line intervention bundle, including scheduled dressing changes every
seven days or as needed, access devices changed every Monday and Thursday, the use of an
alcohol impregnated cap on all ports, and the utilization of a line team. Results were impressive
with the intervention group, having a total of 260 patients with a combined 2,124 line days,
encountered 1 CLABSIs which equated to an infection rate of 0.47/1000 line days. The
nonintervention group on the other

Organ Systems And The Nervous System Essay
The six main organ systems in the human body are the nervous system, cardiovascular system,
endocrine system, digestive system, skeletal system and the reproductive system.
Nervous System
There are two parts to the nervous system which are: the central nervous system and the peripheral
nervous system. The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord and some nerves,
whereas the peripheral nervous system includes all the other nerves and it carries information to the
central nervous system and also from it. The central nervous acts as the central control region of the
human nervous system. The CNS processes information and issues commands around the body.
The autonomic nervous system is the command network the CNS uses to maintain the body s
homeostasis. It regulates heartbeat and controls muscle contractions in the walls of blood vessels,
digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts. It also carries messages that help stimulate glands to
secrete tears, mucus, and digestive enzymes.
Central nervous system
A response to a stimulus is coordinated by its central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of
the brain and the spinal cord. It gathers information about, and responds to, changes in the
environment. Receptors detect a stimulus and send impulses along sensory neurons to the CNS.
The CNS coordinates the information and sends impulses along motor neurons to the effectors,
which bring about a response.
The sequence of a response is:

Disadvantages Of Baby Carrier
One can feel overwhelmed with the amount of baggage that a new baby brings to your house.
There are so many neat and fun gadgets but contrary to what media tells you, you don t have to
have it all. Here is a list of essential baby gear that is a must, the rest is just fluff:
1. Car Seat Unless you want to be a recluse and not go anywhere, this is a MUST. There are two
types that are helpful to evaluate. Although it is more costly to get 2 car seats, I personally think
the advantages of having an infant carrier out way the additional cost.
i. Infant Carrier
Birth to 30 pounds or 20 inches; rear facing only
Can carry outside of car, beneficial when baby sleeps to take in and out of vehicle ii. Convertible car
seat

Baby Carrier bouncers, swings, they are all very nice, but your baby wants you!! Unfortunately
there are other tasks that call your name, so I have deemed a carrier/sling a must have for new
mothers. Baby feels comfortable and close to you and you have 2 hand s to complete your other
tasks. After trying various slings and baby carriers, the Ergo baby carrier provided the most
comfort for baby and me.
4. Breast pump If you will be working, obviously you will want to invest in a good quality breast
pump that last through the rigors. If you plan on staying home the majority of the time with your
little one, I suggest that you buy a simple manual pump. I thought I would pump a lot, but after I
had my little one I preferred to nurse him. I was very glad that I did not spend money on a high
dollar pump. If however you find that you do prefer to pump, then you can invest in a pump
knowing that you are making a good investment.
5. Swing Not every baby likes these, but the vast majority do. Investing in a swing proves helpful
at night and during the day. There are many options out there, but I recommend one that swings
forward and side to side. My little guy did not like the regular swing, but loved the side to side
motion. When he was sick the swing kept him in an upright position to ease

Essay on A Summary of David Abram’s Animism and the
Alphabet
Isaiah Graham
Farmer
ENG 11 940
9/13/2013
A Summary of David Abram s Animism and the Alphabet
David Abram s selection, Animism and the Alphabet conveys that human s disconnection from the
natural world is partially at fault with the alphabet, it also asserts that alphabet originates from the
natural world. Abrams supports his ideas by mentioning several great thinkers throughout history
including Plato, Socrates and others. Abram s also compares modern ways to the customs of
indigenous people. The main purpose of Abram s paper is to convey the idea that people have
disconnected from the natural world, and one of the main reasons for this is the alphabet. The
alphabet is not portrayed as a bad thing, but as a tool that has both ... Show more content on

Some would say that this was an improvement and the Greeks would agree. Others would say this
was just another step in our departure from nature. The beginning of this departure would appear
to have started with the aleph beth, but the Greeks took the system and stripped it of all natural
references. Abrams begins the next section of the text by referring to Socrates. Socrates says I m
a lover of learning, and trees and country won t teach me anything, whereas men in the town do
(pg. 34). This begins a long discussion on whether or not the human race has learned anything
from the natural world. Homer is mentioned several times and it becomes apparent that
throughout his tales the Iliad and the Odyssey nature is seen as a supreme being. The Greek
gods are portrayed by the natural world, so how could Socrates say something as controversial
as the Earth won t teach him anything. In part it is because the Greek society relied extensively
on the social aspect of life. Most Athenians learned from men in the city and not from the Earth
around them, so there was no real way for them to conceive the idea that nature could teach.
There were a few who looked beyond this however and saw the natural world for what it was.
Abrams continues on by explaining that the Greeks were an oral culture and the alphabet was still
being learned. Homers epics were the first stories to ever be written down by the Greeks. This
seems slightly ironic

A lot has changed in theatre during the Renaissance era and today. Things that have changed
between the Renaissance era and today s drama include staging , language, and topics. In the
Renaissance era, theatre performances were hosted in: Inn yards, Amphitheatres and Indoor
Playhouses. In the 20th century, producers use movie sets and digital production. Scripts were
written in Old English during the Renaissanceera , while our current language has evolved. In the
Renaissance, popular topics used in plays included: Aristocrats , Witchcraft, Heroines and History.
In the 20th century some topics used in current dramas include book series, history, and current
events. From the Renaissances era to the 20th century, Dramahas evolved over the ages like how

The Renaissance era relied heavily on actors and props to provide the visual part of a play and
was based off of Aristocrats, witchcraft and heroes, and sometimes histories. Current drama like
movies are pretty similar in terms of producing their work around, histories, current affairs and
popular literature. However, the way we present and create the drama has differed. In the past
drama relied heavily on the usage of actors, props and costumes to provide a visualization of the
play. They were limited on sound and special effects. .More current drama centralizes around
recording and editing with a computer. Modern drama has more access to sound and special
effects than the Renaissance because of the discovery of computers, they can edit parts of a show
and insert sound effects and special effects in the move to convey the mood, emphasize the
importance of the scene, and etc. Movies can also can be created completely by a computer without

Mission Trip To The Belgian Congo
The story in this book was about a family named Price going for a mission trip to the Belgian
Congo, Africa. It was supposed to be only for a couple months, but at the end they stayed more
than they foreseen. The author lets us see the insight of the events as they go through them from 4
out of 5 of the members of the family; Rachel, Adah, Leah, Ruth May, and Orleanna (being the
mother). The only one who the author does not let us see is from the father s point of view. At the
beginning the mother is worried about the health issues they might have to go through while
staying in the village called Kilanga. While the daughters are more preoccupied in how they are
fitting in with the rest of the kids, and being tired of taking so many pills for

  • 2. Legend Of The Ghost Dog Analysis The novel Legend of the Ghost Dog , written by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel, is a thriller and mystery tale about a young girl named Anita (although is known as Tee throughout the book), on an expedition she attended to a small cabin located in the Alaska wilderness, in the town of Nome, with her father and her younger brother Jack, and another young girl that she befriended named Quin. This adventure starts from not Tee s perspective, but from an older woman named Dodie about her childhood raising Siberian Huskies with her family, these chapters would consistently reoccur in the novel. The legend began as just a silly yet spine tingling fable of a dark looming creature known as the Shadow that lived deep in the Alaskan woods near a creek referred to as Dorothy Creek, where just so happen Tee, her little brother and her father were residing near, however escalated to a conundrum about the Shadow that turned out to just be a dog, a jet black Huskywith pale blue eyes with a strong broad body, discovered by the two young girls after taking Tee s beagle on a walk in the snow. While Tee s and Jack s Mother was in Japan for two weeks during their spring break for law work, the siblings went with their dad, a writer, who was on the hunt for a storyabout how the relationship between dogs and man have become less and less throughout the years because of snowmobiles, there for people were not requiring dogs to pull sleds from place to place. Thus, Tee s father begins to work with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Conflict Between Judaism And The Hellenistic And Roman... As dissimilar as they were, the encounter between Judaism and the Hellenistic and Roman worlds with the latter taking on much of what the Greeks stood for should not be considered as a clash between civilizations. Doing so, I believe, would render a complex society and a dynamic process into an absolute and a static one. The postexilic period had obviously brought Jews into contact and in activity with the surrounding non Jewish communities in which they now lived; however, this social and commercial interaction with the non Jews was enhanced, like never before, with the emergence of the Greco Roman eras. The Jews often managed to retain control over their own internal affairs and found favor before various rulers, but pagan ritual, idolatry, and Greco Roman philosophies became almost impossible to avoid. These new realities posed a serious challenge to Judaism and Alexander the Great s idea of uniting the world by pushing for a common language and culture, Homonoia, only served to accelerate and intensify this challenge. Yet, the very nature of this Hellenic culture would, itself, allow the Judean society to establish various paths of accommodation to the conquerors. Thus, in reality, Hellenism was but a framework that enabled Judaism to flourish within a new setting without compromising its indigenous and unique character. The translation of the Scriptures into Greek, precisely because the Hellenized Jews were unable to read it in Hebrew, is an example of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Carry Concealed Weapons There have been at least two school shootings a month in 2015. Of the 52 shootings, 21 have been at colleges and universities, 15 at high schools, three at middle schools, 10 at elementary schools, two at preschools, and one on a school bus (52 School Shootings 1). With all these school shootings, why wouldn t you want to carry a gun? Guns can protect people. If a shooter confronts a person and they see that person is armed they might think twice about what they are doing. Shouldn t you feel some sort of protection and self defense if you have a gun? Even though some say teachers and students should not carry concealed weapons, they should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on college campuses because of self defense, protection, and it... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fernandez claims that, Supporters say it will make college campuses safer by not preventing licensed gun owners from defending themselves and possibly saving lives should a mass shooting occur, such as the one that unfolded at Virginia Tech Universityin 2007 (Fernandez 1). If someone wants to protect themselves why would you want to stop them? If they are trained and responsible and could possibly save lives would you want to be the person to stop them and say no? For example, say a student sees a problem going on in the parking lot of the campus. And the student knows they can stop it because they have a weapon in their car. The student can then grab the gun and try to stop the problem before it gets out of hand. Your car is an extension of your home. This provides safety for college campuses because they know that the students and teachers carrying those weapons are responsible and trained and can possibly save lives if a shooting were to occur there. Out of all of the school shootings that happen a year, there are at least two a month. School shootings can happen anywhere at any time, like preschools, high schools, elementarys. This is why teachers and students should carry concealed weapons. Teachers and students should be able to carry weapons because it is a way for self defense, protection, and safety. • 5. Compare And Contrast Tuck Everlasting Flynn Kelleher1/22/2016 Ms. Molly Tuck Everlasting Essay Have you ever wondered why books seem to always be better than movies based on that book? Well I am here to tell you why. The example I will focus on is Natalie Babbitt s Tuck Everlasting vs Disney s interpretation of Tuck Everlasting. I prefer Natalie Babbitt s Tuck Everlasting over Disney s Tuck Everlasting because of the imagery, the suspense, and the characterization. One example of the imagery being better in the book is the forest. In the book the forest sounds big and beautiful. But, in the movie the forest is quite overgrown and there was not as much wildlife as I expected. Even though the forest wasn t as beautiful as the book portrayed it, it is still quite an amazing sight. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the book Winnie s parents were less interested in finding their daughter than in the movie. I liked this because it made Winnie have another reason to run away. Also, in the book the parents were quicker to give up the spring to the man in the yellow suit. Another example of why the book has better characterization than the movie is Winnie. Winnie was five years younger in the book which gave her time to mature and grow throughout the book. As opposed to in the movie where Winnie was 15 and she did not have as much room to mature and grow. Another aspect of Winnie that was better in the book was her relationship with Jesse. In the book there wasn t as much romance between Winnie and Jesse which I liked because honestly, in the movie, I thought their relationship was an unnecessary side note. The final reason that the characterization was better in the book was the Tucks. In the movie, all the Tuck s opinions were generalized and we didn t get to hear each Tuck s opinion as much as in the book. An example of this is Miles s and Jesse s views on immortality, in the movie we didn t get to hear their differing opinions on immortality as opposed to the book where we herd both their opinions. As you can see Natalie Babbitt s book Tuck Everlasting is much better than Disney s rendition of Tuck Everlasting for three key points. These points were the imagery, the suspense and the characterization. You might ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The National Youth Leadership Forum Growing up in a predominately African American school district, I would go several days without ever being reminded of my racial identity. I was considered part of the majority throughout all of grade school. However, this all changed as I began to stray from my normal crowd and participate in academic enrichment and pre medical programs. The very first time that I was reminded that I was the minority, and therefore inferior to many was when I attended a program called NYLF. The National Youth Leadership Forum allowed me to spend ten days at a medical forum with high school students from all over the world. When I arrived, I looked around and realized that out of about two hundred kids, only about fifteen looked like me. I also noticed that they had all congregated to the same area and had essentially secluded themselves. Determined not to stay in my comfort zone and expose myself to new things, I decided to sit at a different table. A few days into the program, several disappointing things became clear. I began to observe ignorant remarks, disapproving glares, and belittling attitudes from many of my surrounding peers. Admittedly, it did make me somewhat upset to know that so many felt that because I was a black girl, I did not deserve to be at this program. It became evident that many of my opinions, thoughts, and responses to activities were quickly discounted on most occasions. I wondered if I had made the wrong decision by branching off from my African Americanpeers. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Security Of Airport Security Screening In the last thirteen years there have been major changes made in airport security. What brought the changes and shook America to its core, is a day in history that no one will soon forget. Since 9/11, five attempted terrorist attacks on U.S. airliners and airports have made airport security a continued priority. Shortly after the 9/11 attacks, Congress passed the Aviation and Transportation Security Act, which created the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and put federal employees in charge of airport securityscreening (Bajoria). The process for airport security screenings lacked the ability to secure a plane which caused the terrorist to be able to board the plane with ease. There are those that argue that the increase in security has cost the country too much money and does more harm than good. The U.S. has spent more than a trillion dollars to increase the security in all the airports across the nation. According to Paul Borowsky and Gregory Delone, pilots were asked to complete surveys to what they believed needed to be changed. In his book, the pilot wrote that policies were designed to enhance security, however, he believed that they didn t take into consideration input from the pilots of the airliners that the policies were made to protect. There is also the argument that the increased security was an invasion of privacy. When a person first hears the word leak, they most likely think of a story that was not meant to be published or shown to the public, but this is not always the case. Some politicians or government officials will leak information just to see a reaction from the general public. This tactic is called a trial balloon. This tactic is seen in an article that was posted in The New York Times in 2014 about the possible nomination of Labor Secretary, Thomas Perez, for Attorney General. The author states that the nomination of Perez would be strongly supported from minority groups while Republicans would strongly disagree with this nomination. • 12. The Act Of The Indian Tribes Of This Province The Act to encourage the Gradual Civilization of the Indian Tribes of this Province, and to amend the Laws respecting Indians was an Act with the goal of placing indigenous people at the same level as British North American citizens. In essence, indigenous people would have the same or similar legal rights such that all distinctions would be removed between them and British North Americans. Furthermore, this Act was supposed to grant and help indigenous people gain rights with respect to property ownership. This Act had fifteen regulations that were applicable only to indigenous people who decided on becoming enfranchised Indians and hence, British subjects. In becoming a British subject, these individuals would lose their First Nations status. Therefore, while this Act may appear to help Indigenous people, its ultimate goal was to create new subjects for the crown and hence, remove Frist Nation s status. Examples of the type of regulations established in this Act are as followed: 1) The act shall apply only to individuals who are Indians, or have Indian blood, or are intermarried with Indians. Therefore, these individuals must be part of an Indian Tribe which resides on some land that is their own and was never surrendered to the Crown. Furthermore, it is only these particular individuals who are entitled to the regulations of this Act and of other Acts. 2) A commissioner will be appointed such that they are in charge of examining the Indians who want to ... Mel Toews is difficult to fully understand as it stems from Miriam s view of her father; however, she succeeds in portraying her father by convincing the readers he is narrating his own story through a believable recapitulation of his life. Before the memoir begins, the author clearly points out that she will be writing as her father while retelling his life story after gathering information about his life. The prologue is the main reminder that the memoir is written by the daughter about her father who had taken his life, and later on in the epilogue as well. More importantly, the author takes away the surprise of the novel by mentioning her father took his own life (Toews 1) which tells the readers exactly how the story will end. In spite of revealing the ending, Toews uses suspense as a literary technique to pique the reader s curiosity and investment by wondering what leads to his suicide. However with this fact brought out from the very beginning, the reader focuses on the life Mel Toews leads to explain his spiral descent in depression. Rather, through symbolic scenes such as the egg scene or the dream of finding a home, the author presents eerie foreshadows implying the subject s aimlessness in the world he finds himself in. For example, in the egg scene, he states [w]ho will keep [him] warm before [he] breaks? (89). The quotation is a potential ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Modern Conventional Psychiatry ( Kraepelin ) A psychotic condition, or a state of psychosis, is where an individual begins to lose touch with reality by experiencing hallucinations and delusions, and believes them to be real when in fact they are not (Freudenreich, Weiss, Goff, 2008; APA, 2013; Darton, 2013; NHS, 2014; MedlinePlus, 2015). Modern conventional psychiatry(Kraepelin, 1987; Shorter, 1992, 1997; Alexander Selesnick, 1966) uses a predominately biomedical approach to the diagnoses of mental health conditions, which is particularly so for patients of psychotic conditions (Hunter MacAlpine, 1963; Mayer Gross, Slater, Roth, 1975; Guze, 1989; Shorter, 1997). The most recently revised diagnostic criteria for the psychiatric diagnoses can be found in the DSM V (APA,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order for the drug treatment approach to continue, psychotic conditions must be approached using a biomedical perspective. But despite all the influential evidence for this biomedical approach, it is important to note that it is it is not without its flaws (Read, Bentall, Fosse, 2009). For instance, there is no robust evidence for any genetic cause (Read, 2004; Joseph, 2006; Sanders et.al, 2008; Hamilton, 2008; Bentall, 2009), with the evidence for drug intervention argued to be just as questionable (Jones et.al, 2006; Newcomer et.al, 2004; Guo et.al, 2006; Bobes et.al, 2007; Sikich et.al, 2008). Overall, the biomedical psychiatric approach to the treatment of psychosis and madness is incomplete and problematic. The movement of ant psychiatry (Cooper, 1967; Roth, 1973) and the debate of as to whether mental illness is actually a myth (Szasz, 1972), presents even more concern over the status and usefulness of psychiatric diagnosis. There is also a huge debate as to whether labelling a patient with a psychiatric diagnosis for a psychotic condition, and therefore an illness, is not in the patients best interests and is actually more for the benefit of the psychiatrist (Parsons, 1951, 1972; Foucault, 1973; Conrad, 1992; Shilling, 2002; Padamsee, 2011). Hypnosiscan have a meaning for many things, not only for fun at an event where there is hypnotist to make people do enjoyable things and everyone laughs at them. The person being hypnotized has the inner portion observing what the outside actions are and the outside body doing whatever is being told. The brain chooses to listen and do what it is being told, but understands on the inside what is happening. If someone did not want to do something while under hypnosis, they would know and not do something crazy they would later regret. The subject s inner conscious would take over and deny the hypnotist directions because they are not in a dream like manner. This connecting to the sociocognitive approach, a person keeps their social role while being under hypnosis. They would stop doing something if they truly did not want to do something and their inner self knows the limits of what is too much to do. Also being under hypnosis, the person can recall people in their real life such as names while following directions and pretending they are someone else that the hypnotist tells someone to be. This also states that people can not have strengths that they do not when they are under, they just broaden up an imagination more than some people think is possible. The theory dissociation explains that a person listens to the hypnotist and then becomes what the hypnotist tells them, while the sociocognitive theory explains that someone can get hypnotized and while they are hypnotized they know their limits. • 19. The Marriage Of Maria Norler Analysis In the article War Stories: The Search for a Usable Past in the Federal Republic of Germany (1995), Robert G. Moeller, a professor of history at the University of California, Irvine, focuses on the topical question of a treatment of the past by Germans in the post World War II Germany. The author argues that to find a single viewpoint as for the Third Reich period is difficult and the binary opposition of perpetrator and victim tends to impact the process of the national self awareness and self identification greatly (1048). This results in an uncertainty of an ethical assessment of the historical past and, what is more important, demonstration of a selective memory. The purpose of this paper is to provide interpretation of the 1979 film The Marriage of Maria Braundirected by Rainer Werner Fassbinder(1945 1982), a West German filmmaker and a representative of the New German Cinema movement of the 1960s 1980s, taking into consideration the ideas revealed in the article by Moeller. In this way, the main idea of the essay is that in his film, Fassbinder reflects Moeller s concept of the selective memory by means of dehumanization of film characters while showing the historical post war period of the German Economic Miracle. The main character of The Marriage is a woman named Maria. At the beginning of the film, she marries a Wehrmacht officer Hermann Braun in the city of Berlin, which experiences an artillery shelling by the Red Army right at the process of the wedding. ... Sexual Masochism Disorder is a Paraphilic Disorder which is defined as recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors generally involving i) non human objects, ii) the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one s partner, or iii) children or other non consenting persons that occur over a period of at least 6 months with a proposed new definition of any powerful and persistent sexual interest other than sexual interest in copulatory or pre copulatory behavior with phenotypically normal, consenting adult human partners. I do believe that for most people who practice or seek out dangerous sex it is because of the thrill of participating in deviant behavior. It is no surprise to me that 4.6% of women have reported enjoying pain in a sexual experience, and 30 50% of women fantasize about. Based on the information I gathered in regards to Paraphilia and Paraphilia Disorders it does seem fitting that sexual sadism disorder and sexual masochism disorder be changed to paraphilia behaviors, if not entirely removed. It seems that if these disorders are changed, and there is no longer the fear of criminal charges or medicalization of said sexual behaviors, there is a higher likelihood that those who participate in said behaviors will come forward and seek help if they do feel disturbed or the behavior is interfering with their daily ... • 22. Comparing Novel and Film Version of Snow Falling on... Comparing Novel and Film Version of Snow Falling on Cedars It is no easy task to create a work through writing or film that has an impact on society. In writing, one must discuss and analyze a relevant topic that will have an impact on the readers. One must also present stunning sensory images through words in order to create a complete understanding for the reader. In filmmaking it is not much different, but there must be striking visual imagery in combination with a fitting musical score in order to give the viewer of the film the full experience. There must also be historical accuracy, both in writing and film. In either case, it can take years to create such a captivating piece of work. David Guterson s novel Snow ... Ishmael was also one of the reporters covering Kabuo s trial, and found himself tempted to ignore the ethics of journalism taught to him by his father in order to satiate his bitterness toward Hatsue for ending their childhood romance. In delving deeper into the issues that deal with Kabuo s trial, the effects of war, and the romance between young Ishmael and Hatsue, Snow Falling on Cedars explores human emotion and behavior with astonishing accuracy. In the novel, David Guterson spent significant amounts of time exploring the way language can be used to convey a story line. Guterson went back and forth with scenes from past and present in the novel, combining both and portraying them thickly with literary devices. One of the most predominant literary devices in the novel was the use of imagery. The prevalent image of the story is the snow as it fell upon the cedars that populated San Piedro Island. Guterson invoked this image on page after page throughout the novel, making it apparent that the snow veiling the cedar forests could be a metaphor for the way prejudices veil honesty and truth in human behavior. The fact that the island was stricken with the worst snowstorm in twenty years during Kabuo Miyamoto s trial was further evidence to such a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Winnie s Dramatic Story in “Happy Days by Samuel Beckett... Samuel Beckett s play, Happy Days, portrays a woman, Winnie, buried in the ground, first up to her waist, then up to her neck, determined to live out her meaningful life. Although her situation is hopeless because she has no idea how she got there, Winnie trusts that her life is meaningful and truly believes that there is nothing she can do to change it. Consequently, Winnie focuses on trivial details to pass each day. Beckett definitely succeeds in making this character s life dramatic by consuming her life with habits and rituals. Perhaps an evident way Beckett portrays Winnie s dramatic story is through the variation of the phrase this will have been a happy day that she repeats throughout the play. Winnie proclaims this only after Willie acknowledges her existence. Each time Willie ignores her, Winnie s conversation becomes futile and she starts to get the feeling that her hopes are false because she spends the majority of her day telling stories and yearning for her husband s response. Her happy days seem to be when she experiences human interaction. Winnie understands that she talks a lot but she simply talks in hopes to generate some sort of human response. Winnie is overdramatic when Willie even utters a tiny word and proclaims that it is truly a happy day for her, once again renewing her hopes of a happy life. She seems to be a typical dramatic romantic woman who is desperate to keep her relationship with her husband alive. Winnie even admits, I am not merely talking to myself, that is in the wilderness, a thing I could never bear to do for any life of time (756). She understands that speaking aloud to no audience is simply just internal thought and is fearful for that day when she will have nobody to talk to. As described above, I am a quiet and reserved individual who uses experience to make analytical decisions, but only after a lot of thought and analyzing! In the workplace, I keep to myself for the most part and do not do a lot of conversing with management that does not pertain to work. Most of my recent professional life has been leadership roles, so having someone working under me has been common for many years. In the workplace, I feel like I get along better with them. I feel that I can interact amongst the employees on the floor and be myself more than what I can with the guys dressed in suits. My positions are usually one of a supervisor or department manager, so I am a liaison between the entry level employees and upper management. Some people seem to get their bonus points by congregating with managers in their offices, but I m more comfortable amongst the hourly workers that get the work completed. Obviously, I can communicate with upper management, but keep it strictly professional with them. I keep work relationships minimal because I have been burned by them before and have learned from it. I hired friends to work as assistant managers under me for a period of time and saw my store begin to decline. I understood then that I could not have close friends in important positions under me because the inability to separate work from social life, and discipline and be taken serious, were too difficult at the time. The first thing that caught my attention was the external structure of the church. The architecture of the church is old school and it looks like a wooden house. Inside the church we could immediately tell that there were at least two floors. The top floor was where the altar was located and where the congregation took place. As soon as we stepped into the top floor, a really nice lady approached us and told us to sign a book of guests that everyone that attends the service had to sign. After we signed in, the pastor approached us and we told him that we were attending the service for a research project and that we were students from Randolph Macon College, he seemed thrilled to be able to help us. The service itself was much laid back and relatively small. There were 25 people at the church on that Saturday, and they were all very friendly. The pastor was very enthusiastic and welcoming to us. At the beginning of the service, he introduced us to everyone in the church and he encouraged us to research as much as we wanted to. An impact on society includes when the prices are so high of a product, that no one can buy it. A price floor is the lowest legal price a product or service can be sold at. When market price is at its lowest, it may still be too high for consumers to purchase products. Governments can intervene for any purpose, and they are the ones who set these price controls. Because consumers aren t paying as much for the product, producers will not be able to produce as much at the lower price, and consumers will demand more because the product is cheaper. The end result will be consumers not being able to buy the product since there is not enough being made. For example, the price of milk was $2 per litre, and has now been reduced to $1 per litre. This will be great for consumers as they can buy more milk for less, until it runs out. Therefore price ceilings have a good impact on consumers. For producers, price ceilings don t have as good an impact as it does on consumers. Since the consumers are paying much less money for goods and services, they simply cannot afford to make any products. It will have a harmful effect on producers, as their surplus will decrease, resulting in them not making as much product. For example, if the price of lettuce decreases from $7 to $5, then that means a decrease in the amount of money producers are getting. They will not have enough money to grow lettuce, so there will be none or little lettuce harvested to be sold. This means that price ceilings have a large impact on producers, and not in a good way. If the government puts in a price ceiling, then the quantity demanded will exceed the quantity supplied, meaning that not enough goods or services will be supplied to satisfy demand. This situation is called a shortage. Because price ceilings are installed in the interests of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Organ Systems And The Nervous System Essay The six main organ systems in the human body are the nervous system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, digestive system, skeletal system and the reproductive system. Nervous System There are two parts to the nervous system which are: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord and some nerves, whereas the peripheral nervous system includes all the other nerves and it carries information to the central nervous system and also from it. The central nervous acts as the central control region of the human nervous system. The CNS processes information and issues commands around the body. The autonomic nervous system is the command network the CNS uses to maintain the body s homeostasis. It regulates heartbeat and controls muscle contractions in the walls of blood vessels, digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts. It also carries messages that help stimulate glands to secrete tears, mucus, and digestive enzymes. Central nervous system A response to a stimulus is coordinated by its central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain and the spinal cord. It gathers information about, and responds to, changes in the environment. Car Seat Unless you want to be a recluse and not go anywhere, this is a MUST. There are two types that are helpful to evaluate. Although it is more costly to get 2 car seats, I personally think the advantages of having an infant carrier out way the additional cost. i. Unfortunately there are other tasks that call your name, so I have deemed a carrier/sling a must have for new mothers. Baby feels comfortable and close to you and you have 2 hand s to complete your other tasks. After trying various slings and baby carriers, the Ergo baby carrier provided the most comfort for baby and me. 4. Breast pump If you will be working, obviously you will want to invest in a good quality breast pump that last through the rigors. If you plan on staying home the majority of the time with your little one, I suggest that you buy a simple manual pump. I thought I would pump a lot, but after I had my little one I preferred to nurse him. I was very glad that I did not spend money on a high dollar pump. If however you find that you do prefer to pump, then you can invest in a pump knowing that you are making a good investment. 5. Swing Not every baby likes these, but the vast majority do. Investing in a swing proves helpful at night and during the day. There are many options out there, but I recommend one that swings forward and side to side. My little guy did not like the regular swing, but loved the side to side motion. When he was sick the swing kept him in an upright position to ease ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Others would say this was just another step in our departure from nature. The beginning of this departure would appear to have started with the aleph beth, but the Greeks took the system and stripped it of all natural references. Abrams begins the next section of the text by referring to Socrates. Socrates says I m a lover of learning, and trees and country won t teach me anything, whereas men in the town do (pg. 34). This begins a long discussion on whether or not the human race has learned anything from the natural world. Homer is mentioned several times and it becomes apparent that throughout his tales the Iliad and the Odyssey nature is seen as a supreme being. The Greek gods are portrayed by the natural world, so how could Socrates say something as controversial as the Earth won t teach him anything. In part it is because the Greek society relied extensively on the social aspect of life. Most Athenians learned from men in the city and not from the Earth around them, so there was no real way for them to conceive the idea that nature could teach. There were a few who looked beyond this however and saw the natural world for what it was. Abrams continues on by explaining that the Greeks were an oral culture and the alphabet was still being learned. Homers epics were the first stories to ever be written down by the Greeks. This seems slightly ironic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
