Social Structure And Hierarchy At The Gym
For the deviance assignment I decided to break the social norms that are prevalent in the gym
while working out. Cal Poly has a very active campus that uses the gym very regularly. The gym
has its own set of rules and norms that are followed by everyone. I personally do not spend a lot
of time in the gym so to prepare I watched 30 minutes of YouTube videos and read multiple lists
of unwritten gym rules and things not to do at the gym. The social structure and hierarchy at the
gym is different than real life. The gym social structure is based on how much muscle the person
has and for how long the person has been lifting. Therefore, I was at the bottom due to the fact
that I am rail thin and do not work out regularly. As someone at the bottom of the social order I
was for the most part ignored, similar to how one ignores the poor and homeless. The only way
to get a reaction out of people was to act out and disturb the social order. No one offered to help
me and spend time with me to improve out of the goodness of his or her heart, most people stick

So here I was, watching a couple of kids, a brother (9) and a sister (11), during the Super Bowl this
year while their parents were downstairs watching the game. We were playing the board game LIFE
. All was going well, and then the brother (we ll call him Sam) got bored as kids do. So Sam pulled
out his iPhone and started looking for an app to appease his boredom. Before I knew it, Sam
opened a gun app. This application allows the user to select any type of gun, ranging from hand
pistols to machine guns, and make it shoot by shaking the phone which is augmented by the
camera flash going off each time the gun fires. My blood ran cold as I watched him play around
and shoot his sister. The only thing missing from the reality of shooting someone for this precious
boy was the bullet ripping through his loved one. It was all I could do to stop him from running
downstairs and pretend to kill his dad with an AK 47.

offended by the misogynist message she assumed the poem to have. While Swift s poem gives a

Erik Erikson was born in Germany to a Danish mother and three years later, a German stepfather.
He never knew his real father from Denmark. Growing up in Germany in a Jewish environment
was sometimes difficult for him because of his Nordic features among his brown eyes, brown
haired peers. Erikson was largely influenced by Sigmund Freud and expanded upon his Human
Development theory with his own, the Psych Social Stages of Development. Erikson moved to

completely different forms of learning. Classical conditioning, discovered by Ivan Pavlov, is
associated with learning through the process in which one reacts to a neutral stimulus. This process
involves matching a neutral stimulus to a stimulus (UCS) that produces an unconditioned response
(UCR), or a reflex, for a long period of time. Over time, the UCS would be removed and the person
being manipulated would start reacting to the previously neutral stimulus, thus becoming a
conditioned, or learned, stimulus (CS) that elicits a conditioned response (CR). Operant conditioning
, on the other hand, is a form of learning where one s behavior is manipulated by the outcome. The
consequences would take a toll on one s behavior and would either increase through reinforcement
or decrease by punishment the likelihood of the behavior happening again. Both reinforcement and
punishment are split into two types: positive and negative. Positive reinforcement and positive

complex problems as well as human nature. Moore s graphic novel V for Vendetta is set in a
dystopian London which is run by fascists after a nuclear war. The fascist party, which is known as
the Norsefire, implements curfews, mass surveillance, and constant propaganda. The main
character, a masked man named V, suffered experiments and torture from the government. The story
follows his quest to destroy the regime and seek revenge. In the graphic novel V for Vendetta, the
author Alan Moore shows that humans are intrinsically evil, especially when given power and
authority over others.

imagination. Fiction stretches my mind to create new worlds, meet non existent people, and
entertain previously unfathomable situations. I enjoy writing fiction in order to further elaborate on
the experiences that reading fiction has given me.
Outside of fiction, I enjoy reading about different cultures, mostly on their varying practices and
lores. I want to understand the actions of others and the cultural origins and implications of their
