Cognitive Dysfunction
DISCUSSION
Decline in cognitive function after surgery, particularly in the elderly, has been anecdotally
appreciated by the profession and public for many years. It is a well established phenomenon after
hip, knee, abdominal, cardiopulmonary bypass and recent research reveals it to be a surprisingly
common outcome after other types of major surgery.
Cognition is defined as the mental processes of orientation, perception, memory, and information
processing, which allows the individual to acquire knowledge, solve problems, and plan for the
future. It comprises the mental processes required for everyday living and should not be confused
with intelligence. Cognitive dysfunction is thus impairment of these processes16 .It is usually

In (2012)22 Postler A, Neidel J et al conducted a prospective cohort study of 60 patients older
than 65 years (66.7% female, 33.3% male) who received THR. The cognitive function was
measured preoperatively, one week and six months postoperatively by the mini mental state test
(MMSE). Shortly after surgery 4 patients (6.7%) developed postoperative cognitive dysfunction,
which has recovered at six months follow up. In 41 patients (68.3%) adverse effects were
recorded. Postoperative anemia occurred as the most common adverse effects (n=32; 53.3%).
They noted that during postoperative hospital stay older patients were at an increased risk for
adverse effects. Rudolph JL, Jones RN, Rasmussen LS et al in (2007)23 conducted an
International Study of Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction recruited patients undergoing
noncardiac surgery from 8 countries. In bivariable analysis, several vascular risk factors were
significantly associated with the likelihood of delirium, including male sex, exposure to tobacco,
previous myocardial infarction, and vascular surgery. After adjustment for age, tobacco exposure
and vascular surgery were independent vascular risk factors for delirium. In addition, This study
said male sex is at vascular risk factor and vascular

Essay On Emory
The white marble structures and manicured yards are the principal sign when strolling onto Emory
s grounds that it s not a run of the mill school. Beside the beautiful setting that is fifteen minutes
upper east of downtown Atlanta, Emory s blend of differing qualities and scholastic fabulousness
drives its understudies to buckle down and play hard. Since its origin as a little Methodist schoolin
Oxford, Georgia, in 1836, Emory has turned into a broadly positioned college. The school offers an
expansive aesthetic sciences instruction and sets understudies on a track for achievement in
different fields and fixations. Emory s associations with very licensed organizations and
associations in Atlanta, for example, the Centers for Disease Control and Coca Cola, help the
college draw in candidates from more than fifty nations and rank among the country s world class.

Essay On Thomas Paine s Common Sense
Thomas Henderson

Thomas Paine s Common Sense
Thomas Paine s Common Sense is a seminal piece of American literature and American history;
arguably it s the most important piece. Paine wrote Common Sense in 1775 1776, and it s theme
was to spread his political beliefs. He wanted American independence from the British monarchy.
The pamphlet was anonymously released on January 10th, 1776, and it explained to the reader
why the colonies needed to rebel against their British oppressors. It was sold far and wide across
the colonies, and it was successful; it inspired many of the soldiers during the initial summer of
rebellion in 1776. The whole idea of the pamphlet revolves around persuading the reader to side
with the rebels in their valiant fight for independence, and he absolutely uses contemporary
persuasive techniques in his writing. He uses facts about the present, he looks towards the future,
and he uses religion to persuade his readers. In fact, it s a testament to how the act of persuasion has
been very similar over the last 238 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He talks about how the colonists have really advanced while under British rule, and now they don
t really need them anymore. On top of that, he explains how Britain hasn t been very good to the
colonies; in fact they were oppressive and abusive in the years leading up to the release of the
pamphlet. This might be the most important argument he makes in Common Sense. He outlines the
reasons why the revolution has to start now. He tells the reader in plain English: this is bad, and
we need to do something about it. This is the ultimate form, of persuasion, from then until now.
When you explain to someone how bad their current situation is, many times they will try and do
something about it. Its a perfect way to begin a rebellion, and to persuade people that are on the

Taking a Look at Hydroelectric Energy
Hydro electric energy (hydropower) has been in existence for more than 2000 years ago, which
was firstly used for milling, grain, pumping of water and so many more before been used for
energy generation. Hydroelectricity is another form of electricity that is produced by using water
as the resource for generation, this simply means that when water is released (flow), it is aided
by gravitational force therefore it generates Kinetic Energy (KE) which is converted into
mechanical energy by assistance of turbines and generators which convert the mechanical energy
into electrical energy which is then transferred to power lines in that form. South Africa, like
many other developing countries have electricity challenges and one company in South Africa
have been the leader in terms of ensuring that South Africa is powered by hydro electric energy,
among other alternative such of power. The company is Eskom, South African largest producer of
electrical energy, since it was established in 1923. Eskom have committed to promote health
environmental programs in line with the guideline of UNFCCC, and in its COP 17 fact sheet
Eskom states thus: Eskom provides 95% of South Africa s electricity . The main source of Eskom s
electricity generation is thermal power plants. And even though according to electricity web link,
Eskom disclose that, the company relies on coal fired power stations, to produce more than 80% of
the electricity. Furthermore, in order to subsidize the thermal power

Greek Dancing Gender Roles
Section Two: Embodying gender in dance
Reed argues that as gender is performative, performance studies highlights the gender issues visible
in dance (1998: 516). The unconnected cross cultural examples of the rituals of Cuban Santeria,
Greek Wedding, and the Weimer performer Anita Berber illustrates how dance can used to analyse
how performance challenges, as well as enforces gender relations and power structures.
Cowan (1990) explores how gender is embodied in the dance rituals of a Greek Wedding, of
which dance is a large aspect of the event. Greek Wedding traditions are divided by gender, and
maintained across generations by gender (Cowan 1990: 6). The passing down of traditions from
elder women and mothers, to younger brides maintains ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The painting is then a representation of a representation: the impression of a performance, stylised
further for artistic impact, in the creative and planning mind of the artist. Weimer dance and cabaret
explored issues of women s social and cultural roles, national identity, ethnicity and urbanization
(Gordon 2006, Funkenstein 2005), but this may have been overlooked due to the shock and impact
of the nudity, homosexuality and transvestism incorporating in the performances. Berber s freedom
of movement as representative of her freedom of social liberation (Funkenstein 2005: 26), is clearly
visible in the type of female identity she performed, which was incongruent with the dominant idea

Sociocultural Food Taboos Under The Larger Umbrella...
Preface In this paper, I aim to document various sociocultural food taboos under the larger
umbrella concept of the sacred and profane, a sociologically ubiquitous dichotomy found
worldwide. I will do so by introducing various cultural examples of food taboos and explanative
theories of food avoidance practices. Ideally, this paper will introduce the reader with the
complex social pre and proscriptions of the sacred and profane and the affect of which on food
consumption practices. Food taboo is present in all societies in one form or another. The extent
of food taboos vary between cultures and societies, yet restriction of food resources is ever
present in all social systems, even when the taboo goes unnoticed or is accepted under the guise
of normative behavior of a particular social group. Supporting this point is the simple comparison
of all available food resources to consumed food resources. In no society is the complete available
food resources used as food, or perceived as fit for consumption. The food perceived as fit for
consumption is considered sacred, nourishing, and healthy, while food resources considered unfit
are those tethered to concepts of the profane, unclean, and unhealthy, which ultimately harm the
physical and spiritual body. Food taboo acts as a method to ensure or regain both spiritual and
physical health and is ubiquitously concerned with the maintenance of wellbeing. Animistic
societies are imbedded in a universe of spirits, which when

Metal Bats in Major League Baseball
Metal Bats in Major League Baseball Since the inception of the first Major League Baseball
(MLB) game, played on May 4, 1871, bats made of wood have been the tradition in baseball. The
creation of metal bats occurred in the 1920s, but not actually used in play until 1970 when they
were introduced into Little League youth baseball. Even though all levels of players from children
to professionals seemed to prefer the new metal bats, MLB prohibited their use. Safety, skill level
of the players, cost, level of entertainment provided, and tradition are all arguments used in the
controversy between whether Major League Baseballshould allow metal bats or continue using
wooden ones. The safety of the players is the biggest concern in all... Show more content on

In 2010, a man sued the New York Mets after being hit in the face by a broken bat leaving him
with multiple fractures (White). Because of the many injuries occurring from broken bats,
MLB has made an effort to make bats safer for everyone. Specific regulations created for bats
used in today s games have led to a steady drop in the number of broken bats (Roberts). As of
2013, the rate has lowered to an average of 0.46 bats broken per game (White). The skill level
needed to successfully hit off the different materials remains another argument between metal
versus wood bats. Metal bats have been proven to require less skill to hit with because of their
weight difference and the size of their sweet spots compared to wooden bats. With most metal
bats being made of aluminum, they weigh in much lighter than bats made of solid wood. It is
much easier for players to swing the aluminum bats due to that fact ( Baseball: Wooden Bats Vs.
Metal Bats ). The lighter weight allows players to swing faster, which helps put more force on
the ball, resulting in the ball flying farther and much faster. In a test comparing wood bats to
multiple types of metal bats, balls batted off wood bats obtained an average speed of 98.6 mph,
while balls hit with the different types of metal bats obtained speeds between 100.3 mph and 106.5
mph (Russell). These results show that the lighter weight of the metal bats, helps drive the ball
faster and farther and is not necessarily

Alice Munro Research Paper
Reading literature from around the world is one of the most important things people can do in
school and at home. It allows students to learn the truth about misconceptions they might have
about other places. Many of these stories can also teach students many other important lessons.
Alice Munro is an author who s stories can do both of these things for students. Alice Munro
should be included in the World Literature course. She should be included because her short story
Day of the Butterfly teaches a lesson that every student should learn about, she won a Nobel Prize
in Literature because of her short stories, and she based many of her stories on her own real life
experiences.
Firstly, Alice Munro should be included in the World Literature... Show more content on

These experiences were important for her and her short stories. When talking about her
hometown, she said, I am intoxicated by this particular landscape, at home with the brick
houses, the falling down barns, the trailer parks, burdensome old churches ( Alice Munro
Biographical ). She based the setting in many of her stories on her rural hometown in Ontario
(Munro 33). Her living in Wingham, Ontario also inspired her to write events in her short stories
that were complex as ones in novels ( Alice Munro Facts ). She says everybody has a role that
others create for them in a small town (Munro 33). She knows because of her experience from
living in a rural area. She uses this to create realistic stories including Day of the Butterfly. This
idea is evident in the way the others treated Myra in Day of the Butterfly. When Munro was in
school, she came up with ideas for stories while she walked to there ( Alice Munro Biographical ).
She says, I was eight, it was quite a walk, but I liked it ( Alice Munro Biographical ). Her stories
were also inspired by real life events in her hometown like her mother s death ( Alice Munro
Biographical ). It is clear that her own real life experiences influenced her writing and that the
stories that won her a Nobel Prize were based on them. Therefore, these stories should be included
in the World Literature

Bob Fosse s 1972 Cabaret
Prior to World War I, German cinema was a thriving industry being seen across Europe and North
America. Various European cultures of the 1920s embraced new ideas and artistic styles called
expressionism that focused on experimental fields of expression and looking into the future. In
Bob Fosse s 1972 musical Cabaret, the flamboyant world of art appears under the intimidating Nazi
era. This film follows the German Expressionismtrend as seen through its avant garde style and
sense of emotion. The editing techniques, featured art, and deeper meaning all testify to the German
Expressionismera.
During the 1920s, German Expressionism emerged because of the number of related artistic
movements beginning in Germany that reached an all time high in Berlin, where nightlife was
booming. These expressive movements impressed the multicultural European culture in fields such
as: architecture, painting, sculpting, and film. A crucial notion in the movement was to portray the
world in an emotionally distorted perspective to evoke different moods and participate in new
philosophies. Physical reality was not a concern during this movement. Popular story plots of the
Expressionist films often involved situations concerning madness, betrayal, and insanity, all which
can be found in Cabaret. This obscure style of filmmaking was brought to America when the Nazis
gained political power and a number of German filmmakers immigrated to Hollywood.

Essay on Solomon Northup
Separation and Survival in In the spring of 1841, Solomon Northup accepted an offer of short
term employment as a musician, accompanying a pair of white men, circus performers working
their way back to their troupe. A free African American and resident of New York state, Northup
expected the job to take him from Saratoga Springs to New York City, entailing only a brief
absence from home so brief, in fact, that he did not leave word for his wife, also employed away
from home for a number of weeks, since he expected to return before her. When they reached New
York City, however, his employers urged him to continue with them to Washington, D.C., where

Separation is a paramount theme, entwined for Northup who had a free family awaiting his return,
rather than a slave family he might have had to leave behind with strategies of survival and plans
for escape. Not only Northup s own story, but those of the slaves he met and lived with are
included in his narrative,. especially in the first half, which details how Northup was transported
from Washington to Richmond and finally to Louisiana, where he was sold to a planter in the
Bayou Boeuf area, William Ford.
Northup s experience, while not commonplace, was also not unique: of the fourteen slaves on
the trip to New Orleans, two others were kidnaped free men, wrested from their families. (The
closing of the African slave trade in 1808, as the plantation revolution was taking hold in the
Mississippi Delta area, created a voracious appetite for slaves in the deep South. The
contemporary decline of the staple crop plantation system in the Chesapeake area made slaves a
profitable export for the Chesapeake states, and Washington, D.C., a logical place to sell slaves, and
that profitability no doubt was an inducement to kidnappers.) In Williams slave pen in Washington,
Northup met a man named Clemens Ray, who had long lived in

Genocide In Bosnia
The preface begins with the author recalling an unfortunate event relating to genocide. In 1995,
Bosnian Serbs annihilated Sarajevo by volumes of shells and other bombardments. As a result, the
United States and NATO demanded an end to this atrocity; the Serbs, fearful of the contesters
ceased. In a state of liberty, children began to spend most of their time outside playing. Months
later, the Clinton administration decided to withdraw support from the situation, hoping that the
situation would end itself.
The absence of support led the Bosnian Serbs to once again continue their attacks. Fearful and
determined, the insurgents surpassed the ordinary and decided to threaten a United Nations

Examples Of Integrity In Goodnight And Goodluck
After watching the movie Goodnight and Goodluck directed by George Clooney I think the most
important aspect for present day communicators to carry into their work is integrity. I think
integrity is important because it is a value that shows your character and personality. During the
movie Murrow developed his character by consistently being honest with others and himself.
Edward Murrow shows integrity quite often. For example, when McCathy starts making false
accusations, Murrow stands up in front of the camera and defends himself by stating facts to prove
his innocence. McCarthy claimed that Murrow had ties to communism saying that he was on the
soviet pay role in 1932 and that he is a card carrying member for the international industrial

Rhetorical Analysis Woman
In his artwork Woman in the Blue Veil (La femme au voile bleu), Pablo Picasso appropriated
different aspects of classical Greek art and borrowed various elements from Greco roman pieces
like Grave Naiskos of a Seated Woman with Two Standing Women. Woman in the Blue Veil was
most likely inspired by Greco roman artifacts like Grave Naiskos of a Seated Woman with Two
Standing Women. According to the didactic panel of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in
the Picasso and Rivera exhibit Woman in the Blue Veil was painted near the end of Picasso s neo
classical period (1921 23) and borrows compositional elements from ancient Greek funerary art. The
panel goes on to describe how the figure in the painting recalls the mournful women in the statue...

This fascination can be seen the sculptural quality of his painting, which can be compared to a
style similar to Greek funerary art. The figure in the painting is wearing traditional ancient
Greek tunic, and the head covering that the woman wears is similar to those worn as an ancient
Roman custom. Like traditional Greco roman art, Picasso focuses a lot of attention on the face
of the figure, while still giving a lot of detail to the clothing. In Picasso s piece there are many
curved lines, which seem to suggest a sense of comfort and ease, while the horizontal lines in the
piece suggest a distance and calm. All of these feeling would appeal to the people who had
witnessed the devastations of the war only several years before the painting was made. The long
continuous lines guides the viewer s eye in certain directions, and keeps the viewer interested. The
shapes in Woman in the Blue Veil mostly consist of round shapes like ovals, which represent a kind
of continuous movement. The triangles created by the woman s clothing and her nose leads the eye
in an upward movement, and created

The Eyes Were Watching God Character Analysis
Model Amber Valletta wrote, We are what we see. We are products of our surroundings. A major
element of someone s personality is due to their environment or past events of their lives. Janie
Crawford is certainly not an exception. This is the story of Janie s Pursuit for love where she, a
widowed woman, unfolds her story to her friend Pheoby at dinner. She talks about her childhood
with Nanny and The Washburns, her relationships with Logan Killicks and Joe Starks or Jody, her
experiences with them along with events that took place while being with them or in relation to
them, how they affected her mentality, and how she grows up and matures throughout her life to
the self reliant woman telling the story. In The Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston
,
the struggles in Janie s problematic relationships with Logan and Joe impacted her, which gave her
more and more experiences to gradually building up to the independent woman she is in the
beginning of the story.
The beginning phase of Janie s development was her marriage to Logan, where she thought that
the marriage which Nanny forced upon her might end up fulfilling her aspiration for love.
Logan was very nice to Janie at the beginning, but later, as time went by, he wasn t as nice to her
anymore. One morning Logan called for Janie for her to come out and help him with his work in

The instrumentation and the nature of the lyrics link Hurricane back to a larger tradition of folk
music. The song combines aspects of typical folk and rock music in a particular kind of
electrified that is commonly associated with Dylan, as well as a distinct ballad form, offering the
narrative of a particular event in Rubin Carter s life. The instrumentation includes Scarlet Rivera s

Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress, not only working to transcribe
traditional songs that were at risk of disappearing, but they also encouraged the development of
folk music as a tool for radical politics. This anthology of music would later help inspire Bob Dylan
and others during the folk revival of the 1960s. This chronicling of folk music was all part of
this rise of collectivist folk music at a time in which leftist politics wanted to produce a cultural
identity in America for the folk before the power of corporate America. Some of the folk
anthems of this time were songs like This Land is Your Land , recorded Woody Guthrie in 1944,
or Which Side Are You On? , originally by Florence Reece in 1931 and recorded by the Almanac
Singers in 1941. Both of these songs play into the collective ideas of the time by drawing the
listener into the story of the song. Additionally, both songs serve as vehicles for political protest.
This Land is Your Land can be seen as somewhat of a rallying cry because, after all, This land is
your land/This land is my land , and not the land of

Herta Muller Research Paper
Herta MГјller
Writing is told from within ones self through expressions and thoughts. Creating stories are what
people do as they walk through life, opening and closing doors, and creating history. Becoming
banned to publish in your own country about the struggles and accomplishments throughout your
childhood you would not think would be a problem. It takes unique individuals to accomplish this.
Nobel Prize winner of Literature in 2009, Herta Muller has done this. Her intense, descriptive
novels, essays, poems, and short stories explaining her issues and strategies growing up in a
country which forced labor and banned her from publication is why she won. Herta MГјller has
discovered strength and independence through writing, becoming the woman she is today.

The Role of Team Process on Competitive Intelligence...
Teams in the organization are most important part of an organization . The most significant effect
on team success is team processes. The effectiveness of team process is obtained as most
members in the team are pioneers in every hard side or soft side of the team processes. This
orientation shows members corporate citizenship or corporate social responsibility(CSR).
CSR is a value that organizations can use to build relationships among organizational members
along the organizational structural pyramid. Leaders of the organization will be more open for
upward influence and subordinates will be more inspired and motivated to exert upward influence.
On the basis of CSR and upward influence behavior, competitive intelligence plays not only a
tactical role but a strategic role as well. So, in this paper we are discussing the role of team process
on competitive intelligence scanning in hospitals in Vietnam.
For about half a century all the hospitals in Vietnam are state owned . The common scene then in
the hospitals was that the team processes are brand centered which affects the quality of service.
then the condition changes , domestic private hospitals emerged and the public become more
educated and more concerned about their health which demands high quality service provision
which needs high managerial attention.
CSR is an important factor between companies and their stakeholders . CSR is concerned with the
commitment of companies to contribute to

Example Of Natural Disasters
Natural disasters throughout the world are very frightening although there might be reasons to
look at them in a different perspective? How you may ask, seeing homes and hundreds of people
panic for their lives is all a natural reaction because we don t know what to do for the most part.
However there are other ways into viewing these disasters not only as that naturestops by a decides
to struck a certain place on earth but, that we have a partial responsibility in these disasters. We all
influence how earth s environments work and how we treat it eventually builds up and causes
natural disasters. For the most part literature can give you a whole different perspective on natural
disasters.
In the book Black Nature Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry by Camille T.
Dungy she gives many examples of natural disasters in cycle six. Take one of the poems named
Earthquake Blues by Ishmael Reed talks about an one of the most devastating disasters an
earthquake. It s a short poem as well as a story. How an earthquake was felt by animals before it
struck, then it gets into details how the earthquakes took the life of a little child in a nursery.
However the most significant line in the story was Mr. Earthquake Mr. Earthquake you don t
know good from bad which made so much sense to me. A natural disaster hits when it hits it
doesn t know if it s causing something good or bad. Some disaster happen where a few people can
be hurt and others occur where many lives are at

The Terror Known as Robespierre
Robespierre was one of the most significant men throughout the period of the French Revolution;
he had such an immense amount of power that he was able to have rivals of the revolution put to
death. Robespierre s power came from his joining of the Committee of Public Safety (CSP),
whose original job was to deal with diplomacy and warfare with foreign enemies; though under
Robespierre s power, the CSP became a part of the government which dealt with internal
policing, which got in the way of the jurisdiction of the Committee of General Security (CSG).
The job of the CSG was to remove and discipline enemies of the revolution, though they ended up
competing with the CSP for power over this matter. With this influence from his place in the
CSP, he climbed a social ladder to becoming both extremely influential as well as difficult to
remove from control. Despite the fact that Robespierre held a great deal of power, his authority
eventually declined and led to his death: while working within the CSP, he ordered countless
individuals to be guillotined whether or not people on the outside of the conflict viewed them as
deserving of such punishment: in one instance, he put to death several people that he viewed as
anti revolutionary: Georges Jacques Danton, Lucie Simplice Desmoulins, Jean François
Delacroix, and Pierre Philippeaux. Robespierre did not leave this up to the CSG whose job was to
punish this type of people and because of this, he gained the reputation of a tyrant he

Oxidative Stress
Module ten discussed oxidative stress, and the causes, as well as consequences of liver disorders.
Oxidative stress occurs when there is an abnormal balance between nonspecific oxidation reactions,
and the body s ability to counteract them. A nonspecific oxidation reaction refers to one that
involves free radicals reacting in a disorderly fashion with other molecules. Free radicals are highly
reactive molecules that can cause cellular damage, targeting that of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins
and nucleic acids. Free radicals within the body can lead to fragmentation of proteins causing them
to have an abnormal function, oxidize polysaturated lipids at their double bond causing disruption
in the membrane function, and cause mutations in DNA. Antioxidants react directly with free
radicals in the body to render them inactive. Some antioxidant... Show more content on

Glutathione and uric acid are antioxidants that are made by the cells. Glutathione performs most of
its antioxidant activity within the cell, while uric acid does most of its antioxidant activity in the

carotenoids and selenium. The liver disorders discussed were that of a fatty liver and alcoholic
liver disease. A fatty liver is a disorder that is characterized by the accumulation of triglycerides
within liver cells, causing the liver to enlarge up to three times its normal size. The accumulation
of triglycerides in the liver will cause the liver to have a yellow appearance. A fatty liver can be
caused several ways, such as obesity, protein energy malnutrition, metabolic disorders, and chronic
alcohol consumption. The treatment for a fatty liver depends on the cause for the fatty liver. For
example, if a fatty liver is caused by chronic alcohol consumption, then the patient would need to
stop consuming alcohol in order to reverse the damage.

Ultrasound Essay
Ultrasound is a therapeutic modality that uses vibrations which are produced mechanically at a
higher frequency than sound waves. These waves are referred to as ultrasonic as they are unable
to be heard by humans (Robertson et al, 2006). The success of the use of ultrasound has been
recorded as early as the 1930 s, when in Berlin, sciatica in patients had been shown to have
improved greatly. This evidently resulted in further research and new treatment methods being
created (Stanley, 1958). Since then a lot of research has been carried out and advances in the use of
ultrasoundhas been made and are continuing to be made all the time. The effects of ultrasound in
rehabilitation will be researched and examined to understand its effectiveness.... Show more content

Healing of pressure sores have also improved through the application of ultrasound at a low
intensity (Williams, 1968). There have however been reports suggesting that ultrasound can
increase the size of ulcers following treatment as the intensity was excessively higher than required,
contradicting William s theory (Harvey and Elphick, 1969). It has been suggested that the
application of ultrasound at a low dose can increase degranulation of mast cells and the release of
histamine accelerating the acute inflammation phase. It can also reduce the amount of fluid being
released from the capillaries following injury and collagen synthesis can be increased during the
repair process (Denegar, Saliba and Saliba, 2006). If there is more exposure than required it can
result in a breakdown of tissues and can increase the acute inflammatory response for a longer
period of time, resulting in the patient suffering with their injury longer than the average healing
time. Baker and Robertson (2001) came to the conclusion that therapeutic ultrasound may not be
more effective than placebo ultrasound for pain, musculoskeletal disorders or soft tissue healing.
However many researchers and practitioners continue to believe that ultrasound has many beneficial
effects and from their books and journals evidence can be found to further their theories. The author
has also come to the conclusion that when applied correctly ultrasound can treat a range of

Photography Is A Type Of Art
Photography has been around for many years. In the time that the first camera was invented to
present day, various styles of photography have evolved. Two types of photography that are very
common today are street and nature or landscape photography. Although these styles of
photography have many similarities, they have some differences as well. The subject, camera
equipment, and location are three major differences in these styles. All types of photographywill
have a main focus, or subject. Street photography is a type of art that focuses on the people and
the art in which that city contains. For good street photography, you want to be located in a busy
city or downtown area. Ideal locations in the US include New York, Chicago, Los Angeles,
Seattle, Las Vegas, and many more. This is because in a large city with lots of traffic, you see
many different types of people. All street photographers have different types of styles of portraying
this in their work, but the people of a city are a main focus. Street photographers like to focus on
subjects such as construction workers working in the middle of the road, businessmen/women
rushing from point A to point B, the environment of a homeless person, and many other things. It is
also popular in street photography to capture city art like graffiti and performers.

Why Mothers Come Back From The United States
It has been noticed across the United States that new mothers are returning back to work earlier,

reasons expressed as to why mothers come back to work only six weeks after having a child,
some of them astounding after seeing how we compare to the rest of the world. New mothers
feel the pressure at work and they will miss out on a job promotion since they were gone for a

Offering paid maternity leave is not only beneficial to the mother, but also to the company. I
would like to go over the following points: address the current Family and Medical Leave Act;
understand why maternity leave is important but also why it is better to offer this type of leave
paid; as well as show how the United States compares to the United Kingdom and Australia. The
Family and Medical Leave Act was first enacted in 1993 by President Bill Clinton. This act was
instituted to ensure that those that needed the time off could actually take the time off and still
have their job after returning from leave. The FMLA was started with many stipulations, most
that many are familiar with. First, FMLA offers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave that ensures the
mother that their job is protected. The law also states that the associate applying for leave must

How Does Paine Present The Struggles At Valley Forge
Looking Past the Struggles at Valley Forge THESE are the times that try men s souls. The
summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their

The winter at Valley Forge, during 1777, held small struggles. like missing your family, to the great
struggles of almost dying from starvation and dysentery. The soldiers at Valley Forge
had little food
to eat and were either too cold or could not breath because of the smoke in the cabins. The men
that lived during that time, however, did not give up. They did not stop to order some pizza of
their iphone when they were hungry. Even after watching men stop and take their last breath, they
kept moving forward through the trials. Though some would think this crazy, if I were at Valley

The Option of Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removing is a worth considering option for those who are tired of shaving, waxing, or
tweezing for the removal of unwanted hair. It is one of the most common procedures done for
removing hair in the United States.
The procedure of hair removal is done by beaming highly concentrated light into the follicles of
hair. This light is then absorbed by the pigments in the follicles and destroys the hair. This
procedure became commercial in the mid 1990 s and before this; it had been performed
experimentally for about 20 years. In 1998 the Massachusetts General Hospital published the first
article describing laser hair removal. Now a day the usefulness of laser hair treatment is accepted
generally in the community of dermatology and is practiced widely in clinics. People even use this
method in homes with the help of devices priced and designed for self treatment. The equipment
used for laser is first adjusted according to the thickness, color and location of that particular body
part.
Laser hair removal is mostly used for removing hair from the underarms, legs, face, bikini line and
other areas.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal:
The benefits of laser hair removal are:
1) It removes hair only from the selected area without damaging the surrounding areas.
2) It can remove the coarse hair that are generally difficult to remove and painful as well.
3) The speed of removing hair from this procedure is extremely high than any other hair removal
procedure.

Two Film Versions of Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is a timeless, classic love story written by the incomparable William
Shakespeare. Many of Shakespeare s works are considered literary classics, but none are more
loved than Romeo and Juliet. This play masterfully tells the love story of two teenagers in
Elizabethan England. The title characters Romeo and Juliet are members of two feuding families,
Romeo is a Montagueand Juliet is a Capulet. There are different stylistic ways of portraying Romeo
and Juliet, and the two most popular filmversions portray two very different styles of this one play.

One such scene was the infamous balcony scene. Zeferelli stuck to the classical interpretation,
while Luhrmann did not. In Zeferelli s version Juliet was on the balcony outside her bedroom
calling rhetorically, Romeo, Romeo where fore art thou Romeo? Romeo appears and climbs up
the balcony, and they share a couple of small kisses before he departs. However, in Luhrmanns
version of the play, events occurred slightly differently. Juliet is walking by the pool, when Romeo
startles her and they both fall in the pool. Their conversation then takes place in the pool. In
between getting interrupted by a nosy security guard they share several passionate kisses.
Another significant scene that was portrayed differently in the two versions was the suicide
scene. Zeferelli s version is once again almost exact to what we read in the book. Romeo sees
what he perceives to be a dead Juliet lying in her family s tomb, and distraught by the sight he
drinks poison. When Juliet awakens from her sleep she finds Romeo dead, and stabs herself
with his knife. In Luhrmanns version Romeo goes to the church where Juliet is laid out for her
funeral. He also sees what he perceives to be a dead Juliet and drinks poison. When Juliet awakens
from her sleep she finds out Romeo has swallowed poison and is dying. The main difference lies in
the fact that we are led to believe that maybe he will see her awake

Taking Sides Clashing Views in Management

lavish, executive lifestyle; resulting from hard work paying off and wages that compensate for it.
Annual pay and stock incentives for most executives will fluctuate with the company s
performance, as well as their personal efforts. If a cap was to be implemented on a CEO s salary,
what would be the incentive to stay at the helm of a corporation when the financial glass ceiling has
been reached?
Issue 4: Does an employer s need to monitor workers trump employee privacy concerns? This is
one of these controversial issues where I agree with points from both sides.

Medieval Universities In The Middle Ages
The idea of a university, an institution composed of students seeking higher education in particular
subjects, facilitated by teachers who are knowledgeable in the subject he or she teaches, is one of
many concepts that has survived throughout the Middle Ages into modern day ( university ).
Although the idea of a universityhas evolved over time since the Middle Ages, the general
concepts of a university have remained the same, allowing for the successful comparison and
contrasting of the changes in what was considered university, or universitas Latin, commonly used
as the language in which lectures were given, for university in medieval times, and what is now
considered a university in the current era ( Legacies of the Middle Ages ). The... Show more content

The main four disciplines that were established to be studied in medieval universities were
theology, law, medicine, and letters what we know today as liberal arts ( Legacies of the Middle
Ages ). Oxford University originally specialized in the arts, civil and canon law, and theology in
the twelfth century, incorporating medicine as a track of study in the thirteenth century. Oxford,
along with Bologna, Paris, and Montpelier belonged to the primary band of European
universities in medieval times (Cobban 4). The universities in the Middle Ages existed not solely
for the purpose of teaching, but also to facilitate research and debate, and that its curriculum
covered both religious and secular subjects ( Legacies of the Middle Ages ). In addition to the
four main disciplines of study previously mentioned, logical analysis applied to all subjects being
studied. In the Middle Ages, students gained a facility in the application of rational argument to
intellectual propositions, the essence of the scholastic method as it had evolved from the twelfth
century and even earlier (Cobban 150). Students attending medieval English universities studied
the trivium, consisting of classes focusing on the effective usage of logic, grammar, and rhetoric.
Arithmetic and astronomy, a mix of classical, Arabic, and contemporary sources, also played a
major role in specific subjects studied in medieval universities (Cobban 155 57). Although the
universities in medieval times taught subjects that are worldly, English scholars were subject to
ecclesiastical courts. An abundance of scholars not only received a degree from the university, but
they also acquired clerical status (Cobban 2). In the days since the formation of the university in
the Middle Ages, the amount of courses available for students to study has increased drastically, as

The Symbiotic Relationship Of The Hypothalamus Interaction...
As the control center of the endocrine system, the hypothalamus interacts with the body in a unique
way. It has a symbiotic relationship with the pituitary gland, which stimulates the release of
hormones to different parts of the body. Located inferior to the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland
lies within a cavity of the sphenoid bone known as the sella turcica. The hypothalamus
communicates with the pituitary glandthrough two separate lobes: one leading to the anterior
pituitary and another leading to the posterior pituitary. The connection of these two lobes through
the infundibulum forms the bridge between the nervous and endocrine systems. The lobe that
connects the hypothalamus to the anterior pituitary is called the hypophyseal portal

British Colonialism and Its Effects on Shaping Pakistani...
3. British colonialism and its effects on the shaping of Pakistani culture
The culture of a nation (a complex structure of unsaid dos and don ts) is determined by their
emotive sensitivities and intellectual development at a given stage in history. The form of social
order and its institutions are a reflection of this culture. Pre British India was on a declining path vis
Г vis these factors. Hence conditions were ripe for the invaders to encourage and establish a
culture of collaboration. And they were greatly helped in this process by people who willingly
forsake the responsibility of leadership in favor of the colonists who represented a culture on
dominance.
The advent of the British in India, unlike the previous invading forces, ... Show more content on

Because the domain of culture is extremely broad, and encompasses many facets of civilized
social life the task of post colonial cultural regeneration was much larger than what even what the
most well meaning advocates of de colonization could have anticipated. And whereas some aspects
of culture are immediately apparent to all (or most people in society), there are other more subtle
and complex aspects of social culture that are not as readily understood or appreciated by the
majority especially at times (and in situations) when there have been sharp and forcible breaks in
cultural continuity.
A common understanding of culture is in very simple and general terms for example, popular
customs such as traditions and rituals pertaining to birth marriage and death. But colonial regimes
did not show myuch interest in these aspects of daily life that is why most victims of the
colonization are unaware of what they have lost permanently. Soon colonized societies had not
only forgotten what they had, they had also forgotten how to sustain or renew (or elaborate upon)
their fragile heritage. Above all, they had forgotten to dream, to fantasize and to engage in
constructive and creatively critical social discourse Colonization always discouraged personal
integrity. If any brave man even thought of taking a stand against, he was killed or hanged. This
kind of brutality served as a warning for the patriots and at the same time it generated an

Descriptive Essay About Snow Angel
Snow Angel
Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Angelina whose dream was to have a chance at seeing
the world and the seven wonders it held. Perhaps, someday, she sighed, looking out her bedroom
window. For now, the one room apartment her family shared with her and someday were enough.
For years, it seemed it would always be.
But, one day, on her way back home from buying salt from the market, a goblin appeared and
strolled up to Angelina. He had a smug walk and a smile that carried malicious intent. Using his
charisma, he proposed a bargain. Suddenly, enough was insufficient.
Goblins were not to be trusted, especially those that made deals . . . but, a world of infinite
wonders for a morsel of salt seemed generous too generous. That s what she said when he asked,
but his wild tales about the ecstasy of joy he could gift to her intrigued her.
The goblin began to bounce around, and the grin on his face made Angelina envious. So, you re
turning down the mere proposition of absolute happiness compared to your dull and mundane life
because . . . the fairy tales tell you goblins play tricks? he questioned. You re smarter than that, aren
t you?
I. . . . Angelina didn t know what to say.
You haven t got much time to decide, dearie. I ve got plenty of offers waiting on the other side of
town, but I thought a lovely lass like you might need a little bit of cheerin up. His smirk
challenged Angelina. Well, I ain t got no time for dilly dallyin , he said, walking

Gender Based Discrimination And Social Norms
Gender based discrimination and social norms are the most common causes of violence against
women. Theoretically, these societal norms that have been in grated to us since childhood lead us
to believe that the male gender has the right to do whatever they want while at the same time
restrict the female genderfrom doing the same or condemn or punish them if they fail to obey
such stigmas. So far, efforts have only focused on responses and services for survivors; given the
devastating effect violence has on women. Preventing the violence from happening in the first
place by addressing its root and structural causes is the best way to end violence against women
and girls.
It is only through education of boys at a young age that it is possible to change this norm of
looking at women as the lesser sex. In order to prevent and eradicate gender based discrimination in
a fast and sustainable manner, working on the attitudes of the youth is the best possible step. This
is because youth is a critical time when values and norms around gender equality are forged, while
public policies and intervention often overlook this stage of life.
The 57th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) placed a strong urge on the
prevention of the gender based discrimination. Working on the theme: eliminate and prevent all
forms of violence against women and girls , which was attended by representatives of various
organizations from all over the world. Prevention also means to make the

Concentration Of Sucrose Affects The Mass Of Potato
Based on the experiment result, it supports my hypothesis that as concentration of sucrose increases
the mass of potato will be decrease due to its temper is to make an equivalent concentration
between the solution and potato. For instance, in the graph that above shows the first one on x axis
is the highest mass of potatothat spent 5 days in distilled water. On the other hand, the fourth one is
the lowest mass, which represents 4M sucrose solutionof potato. Moreover, the data proves my
prediction, as water molecules from higher sucrose solution of potato moves out actively from the
potato through semi permeable membrane into the sucrose solution. In details, the important
evidence that supports my hypothesis is then the potato will be shrink

Patricia Shehan Campbell s Songs In Their Heads
Report on Songs in Their Heads: Music and It s Meaning in Children s Lives
The book Songs in Their Heads: Music and It s Meaning in Children s Lives by Patricia Shehan
Campbell is an anthropological study of samples of children in the US and their relation to music
and music making. The book is broken into three parts: children at musical play, conversations with
children about music, and children s musical education. Campbell s study focuses on what children
musically are and what they musically become through parents and teachers.
Campbell did not appear biased in her approach to this study. Her focus was to understand children
s musical culture. There were some questions and critiques of how musical education could benefit
from seeing children ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Is Twelfth Night Deceiving
Twelfth Night Danial Naseem Society today is full of examples of people who are deceiving
each other by appearing as someone they are not. William Shakespeare s play Twelfth Night,
conveys many acts where characters are deceiving others. He illustrates how disguises impact
others emotionally causing one to feel downed. Shakespeare has shown how disguises are very
easy to fool people and that from this it could ruin one s life. One example of a negative
consequence in Twelfth Nightis when the main character Viola, dresses up as a man and names
herself Cesario which lead to Countess Olivia s deception. Thou shalt present me as a eunuch to
him, is what Viola said, and it means that she will dress as a male and go work as a messenger.
Viola s appearance had gotten the best of Olivia and it caused Olivia to fall in love with her. This
put Viola in big trouble considering how she could not reveal herself as a girl. She tried to let
Olivia down easy many times, but because of Olivia s desperation, she kept chasing Viola s heart.

Wear yellow stockings, cross gartered, and put a smile on your face, is part of what Maria wrote
in the letter to prank Malvolio. This was to make Malvolio look like a fool in front of his lady
Olivia, and so that she could get a good laugh along with her friends who were also in on the
prank. When Malvolio showed up to Olivia wearing the ridiculous clothing she put him into a
cell thinking he was insanely mad. Here Shakespeare emits how it is not necessary for someone
to deceive someone from acting as a person, one can also deceive one by just a piece of writing.
From this act he illustrated how deceiving someone from writing is worse than deceiving someone

It is a well established phenomenon after hip, knee, abdominal, cardiopulmonary bypass and recent research reveals it to be a surprisingly common outcome after other types of major surgery. Cognition is defined as the mental processes of orientation, perception, memory, and information processing, which allows the individual to acquire knowledge, solve problems, and plan for the future. The cognitive function was measured preoperatively, one week and six months postoperatively by the mini mental state test (MMSE). Shortly after surgery 4 patients (6.7%) developed postoperative cognitive dysfunction, which has recovered at six months follow up. In 41 patients (68.3%) adverse effects were recorded. Postoperative anemia occurred as the most common adverse effects (n=32; 53.3%). They noted that during postoperative hospital stay older patients were at an increased risk for adverse effects. • 4. Essay On Thomas Paine s Common Sense Thomas Henderson Professor Phagan October 1st, 2014 English 294 Thomas Paine s Common Sense Thomas Paine s Common Sense is a seminal piece of American literature and American history; arguably it s the most important piece. Paine wrote Common Sense in 1775 1776, and it s theme was to spread his political beliefs. He wanted American independence from the British monarchy. The pamphlet was anonymously released on January 10th, 1776, and it explained to the reader why the colonies needed to rebel against their British oppressors. It was sold far and wide across the colonies, and it was successful; it inspired many of the soldiers during the initial summer of rebellion in 1776. The whole idea of the pamphlet revolves around persuading the reader to side with the rebels in their valiant fight for independence, and he absolutely uses contemporary persuasive techniques in his writing. He uses facts about the present, he looks towards the future, and he uses religion to persuade his readers. In fact, it s a testament to how the act of persuasion has been very similar over the last 238 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He talks about how the colonists have really advanced while under British rule, and now they don t really need them anymore. On top of that, he explains how Britain hasn t been very good to the colonies; in fact they were oppressive and abusive in the years leading up to the release of the pamphlet. This might be the most important argument he makes in Common Sense. He outlines the reasons why the revolution has to start now. He tells the reader in plain English: this is bad, and we need to do something about it. This is the ultimate form, of persuasion, from then until now. When you explain to someone how bad their current situation is, many times they will try and do something about it. Its a perfect way to begin a rebellion, and to persuade people that are on the ... • 5. Taking a Look at Hydroelectric Energy Hydro electric energy (hydropower) has been in existence for more than 2000 years ago, which was firstly used for milling, grain, pumping of water and so many more before been used for energy generation. Hydroelectricity is another form of electricity that is produced by using water as the resource for generation, this simply means that when water is released (flow), it is aided by gravitational force therefore it generates Kinetic Energy (KE) which is converted into mechanical energy by assistance of turbines and generators which convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy which is then transferred to power lines in that form. South Africa, like many other developing countries have electricity challenges and one company in South Africa have been the leader in terms of ensuring that South Africa is powered by hydro electric energy, among other alternative such of power. The company is Eskom, South African largest producer of electrical energy, since it was established in 1923. Eskom have committed to promote health environmental programs in line with the guideline of UNFCCC, and in its COP 17 fact sheet Eskom states thus: Eskom provides 95% of South Africa s electricity . The main source of Eskom s electricity generation is thermal power plants. The unconnected cross cultural examples of the rituals of Cuban Santeria, Greek Wedding, and the Weimer performer Anita Berber illustrates how dance can used to analyse how performance challenges, as well as enforces gender relations and power structures. Cowan (1990) explores how gender is embodied in the dance rituals of a Greek Wedding, of which dance is a large aspect of the event. Greek Wedding traditions are divided by gender, and maintained across generations by gender (Cowan 1990: 6). • 7. Sociocultural Food Taboos Under The Larger Umbrella... Preface In this paper, I aim to document various sociocultural food taboos under the larger umbrella concept of the sacred and profane, a sociologically ubiquitous dichotomy found worldwide. I will do so by introducing various cultural examples of food taboos and explanative theories of food avoidance practices. Ideally, this paper will introduce the reader with the complex social pre and proscriptions of the sacred and profane and the affect of which on food consumption practices. Food taboo is present in all societies in one form or another. The extent of food taboos vary between cultures and societies, yet restriction of food resources is ever present in all social systems, even when the taboo goes unnoticed or is accepted under the guise of normative behavior of a particular social group. Supporting this point is the simple comparison of all available food resources to consumed food resources. In no society is the complete available food resources used as food, or perceived as fit for consumption. The food perceived as fit for consumption is considered sacred, nourishing, and healthy, while food resources considered unfit are those tethered to concepts of the profane, unclean, and unhealthy, which ultimately harm the physical and spiritual body. Food taboo acts as a method to ensure or regain both spiritual and physical health and is ubiquitously concerned with the maintenance of wellbeing. Animistic societies are imbedded in a universe of spirits, which when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Metal Bats in Major League Baseball Metal Bats in Major League Baseball Since the inception of the first Major League Baseball (MLB) game, played on May 4, 1871, bats made of wood have been the tradition in baseball. The creation of metal bats occurred in the 1920s, but not actually used in play until 1970 when they were introduced into Little League youth baseball. Even though all levels of players from children to professionals seemed to prefer the new metal bats, MLB prohibited their use. Safety, skill level of the players, cost, level of entertainment provided, and tradition are all arguments used in the controversy between whether Major League Baseballshould allow metal bats or continue using wooden ones. The safety of the players is the biggest concern in all... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 2010, a man sued the New York Mets after being hit in the face by a broken bat leaving him with multiple fractures (White). Because of the many injuries occurring from broken bats, MLB has made an effort to make bats safer for everyone. Specific regulations created for bats used in today s games have led to a steady drop in the number of broken bats (Roberts). As of 2013, the rate has lowered to an average of 0.46 bats broken per game (White). The skill level needed to successfully hit off the different materials remains another argument between metal versus wood bats. Metal bats have been proven to require less skill to hit with because of their weight difference and the size of their sweet spots compared to wooden bats. With most metal bats being made of aluminum, they weigh in much lighter than bats made of solid wood. It is much easier for players to swing the aluminum bats due to that fact ( Baseball: Wooden Bats Vs. Metal Bats ). The lighter weight allows players to swing faster, which helps put more force on the ball, resulting in the ball flying farther and much faster. In a test comparing wood bats to multiple types of metal bats, balls batted off wood bats obtained an average speed of 98.6 mph, while balls hit with the different types of metal bats obtained speeds between 100.3 mph and 106.5 mph (Russell). These results show that the lighter weight of the metal bats, helps drive the ball faster and farther and is not necessarily ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Bob Fosse s 1972 Cabaret Prior to World War I, German cinema was a thriving industry being seen across Europe and North America. Various European cultures of the 1920s embraced new ideas and artistic styles called expressionism that focused on experimental fields of expression and looking into the future. In Bob Fosse s 1972 musical Cabaret, the flamboyant world of art appears under the intimidating Nazi era. This film follows the German Expressionismtrend as seen through its avant garde style and sense of emotion. The editing techniques, featured art, and deeper meaning all testify to the German Expressionismera. During the 1920s, German Expressionism emerged because of the number of related artistic movements beginning in Germany that reached an all time high in Berlin, where nightlife was booming. These expressive movements impressed the multicultural European culture in fields such as: architecture, painting, sculpting, and film. A crucial notion in the movement was to portray the world in an emotionally distorted perspective to evoke different moods and participate in new philosophies. Physical reality was not a concern during this movement. Popular story plots of the Expressionist films often involved situations concerning madness, betrayal, and insanity, all which can be found in Cabaret. This obscure style of filmmaking was brought to America when the Nazis gained political power and a number of German filmmakers immigrated to Hollywood. (The closing of the African slave trade in 1808, as the plantation revolution was taking hold in the Mississippi Delta area, created a voracious appetite for slaves in the deep South. The contemporary decline of the staple crop plantation system in the Chesapeake area made slaves a profitable export for the Chesapeake states, and Washington, D.C., a logical place to sell slaves, and that profitability no doubt was an inducement to kidnappers.) A major element of someone s personality is due to their environment or past events of their lives. Janie Crawford is certainly not an exception. This is the story of Janie s Pursuit for love where she, a widowed woman, unfolds her story to her friend Pheoby at dinner. She talks about her childhood with Nanny and The Washburns, her relationships with Logan Killicks and Joe Starks or Jody, her experiences with them along with events that took place while being with them or in relation to them, how they affected her mentality, and how she grows up and matures throughout her life to the self reliant woman telling the story. In The Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston , the struggles in Janie s problematic relationships with Logan and Joe impacted her, which gave her more and more experiences to gradually building up to the independent woman she is in the beginning of the story. Some of the most important figures of this chapter in the development of folk music were Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Alan Lomax. In 1928, Charles Seeger and Ruth Crawford Seeger, Pete Seeger s father and step mother, along with John Lomax and his son Alan, began the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress, not only working to transcribe traditional songs that were at risk of disappearing, but they also encouraged the development of folk music as a tool for radical politics. This anthology of music would later help inspire Bob Dylan and others during the folk revival of the 1960s. This chronicling of folk music was all part of this rise of collectivist folk music at a time in which leftist politics wanted to produce a cultural identity in America for the folk before the power of corporate America. Some of the folk anthems of this time were songs like This Land is Your Land , recorded Woody Guthrie in 1944, or Which Side Are You On? , originally by Florence Reece in 1931 and recorded by the Almanac Singers in 1941. Both of these songs play into the collective ideas of the time by drawing the listener into the story of the song. Additionally, both songs serve as vehicles for political protest. The Terror Known as Robespierre Robespierre was one of the most significant men throughout the period of the French Revolution; he had such an immense amount of power that he was able to have rivals of the revolution put to death. Robespierre s power came from his joining of the Committee of Public Safety (CSP), whose original job was to deal with diplomacy and warfare with foreign enemies; though under Robespierre s power, the CSP became a part of the government which dealt with internal policing, which got in the way of the jurisdiction of the Committee of General Security (CSG). The job of the CSG was to remove and discipline enemies of the revolution, though they ended up competing with the CSP for power over this matter. With this influence from his place in the CSP, he climbed a social ladder to becoming both extremely influential as well as difficult to remove from control. Despite the fact that Robespierre held a great deal of power, his authority eventually declined and led to his death: while working within the CSP, he ordered countless individuals to be guillotined whether or not people on the outside of the conflict viewed them as deserving of such punishment: in one instance, he put to death several people that he viewed as anti revolutionary: Georges Jacques Danton, Lucie Simplice Desmoulins, Jean FranГ§ois Delacroix, and Pierre Philippeaux. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that can cause cellular damage, targeting that of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. These waves are referred to as ultrasonic as they are unable to be heard by humans (Robertson et al, 2006). The success of the use of ultrasound has been recorded as early as the 1930 s, when in Berlin, sciatica in patients had been shown to have improved greatly. This evidently resulted in further research and new treatment methods being created (Stanley, 1958). Since then a lot of research has been carried out and advances in the use of ultrasoundhas been made and are continuing to be made all the time. Healing of pressure sores have also improved through the application of ultrasound at a low intensity (Williams, 1968). There have however been reports suggesting that ultrasound can increase the size of ulcers following treatment as the intensity was excessively higher than required, contradicting William s theory (Harvey and Elphick, 1969). It has been suggested that the application of ultrasound at a low dose can increase degranulation of mast cells and the release of histamine accelerating the acute inflammation phase. It can also reduce the amount of fluid being released from the capillaries following injury and collagen synthesis can be increased during the repair process (Denegar, Saliba and Saliba, 2006). If there is more exposure than required it can result in a breakdown of tissues and can increase the acute inflammatory response for a longer period of time, resulting in the patient suffering with their injury longer than the average healing time. Baker and Robertson (2001) came to the conclusion that therapeutic ultrasound may not be more effective than placebo ultrasound for pain, musculoskeletal disorders or soft tissue healing. This light is then absorbed by the pigments in the follicles and destroys the hair. This procedure became commercial in the mid 1990 s and before this; it had been performed experimentally for about 20 years. The main four disciplines that were established to be studied in medieval universities were theology, law, medicine, and letters what we know today as liberal arts ( Legacies of the Middle Ages ). Oxford University originally specialized in the arts, civil and canon law, and theology in the twelfth century, incorporating medicine as a track of study in the thirteenth century. Oxford, along with Bologna, Paris, and Montpelier belonged to the primary band of European universities in medieval times (Cobban 4). The universities in the Middle Ages existed not solely for the purpose of teaching, but also to facilitate research and debate, and that its curriculum covered both religious and secular subjects ( Legacies of the Middle Ages ). In addition to the four main disciplines of study previously mentioned, logical analysis applied to all subjects being studied. In the Middle Ages, students gained a facility in the application of rational argument to intellectual propositions, the essence of the scholastic method as it had evolved from the twelfth century and even earlier (Cobban 150). Students attending medieval English universities studied the trivium, consisting of classes focusing on the effective usage of logic, grammar, and rhetoric. Arithmetic and astronomy, a mix of classical, Arabic, and contemporary sources, also played a major role in specific subjects studied in medieval universities (Cobban 155 57). Although the universities in medieval times taught subjects that are worldly, English scholars were subject to ecclesiastical courts. An abundance of scholars not only received a degree from the university, but they also acquired clerical status (Cobban 2). The hypothalamus communicates with the pituitary glandthrough two separate lobes: one leading to the anterior pituitary and another leading to the posterior pituitary. • 44. British Colonialism and Its Effects on Shaping Pakistani... 3. British colonialism and its effects on the shaping of Pakistani culture The culture of a nation (a complex structure of unsaid dos and don ts) is determined by their emotive sensitivities and intellectual development at a given stage in history. The form of social order and its institutions are a reflection of this culture. Pre British India was on a declining path vis Г vis these factors. Hence conditions were ripe for the invaders to encourage and establish a culture of collaboration. And they were greatly helped in this process by people who willingly forsake the responsibility of leadership in favor of the colonists who represented a culture on dominance. The advent of the British in India, unlike the previous invading forces, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because the domain of culture is extremely broad, and encompasses many facets of civilized social life the task of post colonial cultural regeneration was much larger than what even what the most well meaning advocates of de colonization could have anticipated. And whereas some aspects of culture are immediately apparent to all (or most people in society), there are other more subtle and complex aspects of social culture that are not as readily understood or appreciated by the majority especially at times (and in situations) when there have been sharp and forcible breaks in cultural continuity. A common understanding of culture is in very simple and general terms for example, popular customs such as traditions and rituals pertaining to birth marriage and death. But colonial regimes did not show myuch interest in these aspects of daily life that is why most victims of the colonization are unaware of what they have lost permanently. Soon colonized societies had not only forgotten what they had, they had also forgotten how to sustain or renew (or elaborate upon) their fragile heritage. Above all, they had forgotten to dream, to fantasize and to engage in constructive and creatively critical social discourse Colonization always discouraged personal integrity. If any brave man even thought of taking a stand against, he was killed or hanged. This kind of brutality served as a warning for the patriots and at the same time it generated an ... • 46. Gender Based Discrimination And Social Norms Gender based discrimination and social norms are the most common causes of violence against women. Theoretically, these societal norms that have been in grated to us since childhood lead us to believe that the male gender has the right to do whatever they want while at the same time restrict the female genderfrom doing the same or condemn or punish them if they fail to obey such stigmas. So far, efforts have only focused on responses and services for survivors; given the devastating effect violence has on women. Preventing the violence from happening in the first place by addressing its root and structural causes is the best way to end violence against women and girls. It is only through education of boys at a young age that it is possible to change this norm of looking at women as the lesser sex. In order to prevent and eradicate gender based discrimination in a fast and sustainable manner, working on the attitudes of the youth is the best possible step. This is because youth is a critical time when values and norms around gender equality are forged, while public policies and intervention often overlook this stage of life. The 57th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) placed a strong urge on the prevention of the gender based discrimination. Working on the theme: eliminate and prevent all forms of violence against women and girls , which was attended by representatives of various organizations from all over the world. Concentration Of Sucrose Affects The Mass Of Potato Based on the experiment result, it supports my hypothesis that as concentration of sucrose increases the mass of potato will be decrease due to its temper is to make an equivalent concentration between the solution and potato. For instance, in the graph that above shows the first one on x axis is the highest mass of potatothat spent 5 days in distilled water. On the other hand, the fourth one is the lowest mass, which represents 4M sucrose solutionof potato. Moreover, the data proves my prediction, as water molecules from higher sucrose solution of potato moves out actively from the potato through semi permeable membrane into the sucrose solution.
