Essay on Democracy in America
Democracy is a unique type of government, and the purpose of this essay is to illustrate the strengths
and weaknesses that a democratic government provides. I will detail that many components of this
type of society are both strengths and weakness as each component has beneficial aspects as well as
unavoidable pitfalls. A democracy is a government by the people, in which the power is vested in the
people themselves. The people then elect representatives who conduct their power in a free electoral
system. The Declaration of Independence, which says that all men are created equal, was written on
the premise of a democracy. According to John Locke, who wrote The Social Contract, before
acknowledging that an individual is part of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The laws of society are applied equally to everyone, but equitable to the circumstances. The same
holds true for taxes: those with higher incomes pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes than
those in lower tax brackets. Although not equally applied, the tax laws are equitable. Democratic laws
are written in such a way as to allow interpretation depending upon circumstances. A thousand
circumstances, independent of the will of man, facilitate the maintenance of a democratic republic in
the United States Initially, laws are difficult to design because lawmakers can t think of every
possibility, every scenario, and every obstacle that may present itself in the democracy. Despite these
difficulties, laws keep society together and provide unity for the citizens. Advantages for creating
laws, include, but are not limited to, providing direction for the collection of taxes, declaring clear
expectations for compliance and punishment of citizens and elimination of chaos. A weakness of
democracy is the Tyranny of the Majority . This is an inevitable pitfall, because in a democracy, the
power is vested foremost in the people the constituting the society itself. Alexis de Tocqueville wrote
on this concept: Democratic laws generally tend to promote the welfare of the greatest possible
number; for they emanate from the majority of the citizens, who are subject to error, but who cannot
have an interest opposed to

Death Reporters
A second work with elements that can foster intellectual and possibly emotional challenges is Death
Reporters. As explained above, not only the series title can arouse curiosity, so can the individual work
titles (e.g.: 6 + 27 + 5 ). When combining the title of the series with the title of the works, the visitor
can come to understand that the numbers refer to the number of death casualties the reporters are
announcing, hence the title Death Reporters. At first, this reflection can create a shock on an emotional
level. However, the intent is for people to reflect on the appearance of these reporters when
announcing catastrophes. Indeed, the artist wants to directly address the extreme sensationalism of
mass media which feeds itself on bombastic news, hence embodying the lack of empathy in ... Show

It is composed of two elements: a portrait with a stitching and a poem. The poems are the elements
that create the emotional challenge. The texts are heavily charged emotionally, creating a strong
reaction which could result from not being prepared for such representation of refugee life. It can be
frightening, as people might not be accustomed to reading such stories. It can equally be moderately
shocking, because even if people do understand that these are difficult moments in the lives of
refugees through media coverage, it is not every day that they can learn about their journey in this
way. Indeed, the texts are brutally honest about the atrocities they encounter on their way to the United
Kingdom. In this case, the challenge is primarily due to the sitters who shared their stories via these
poems. The artist is important since she initiated the project and decided to include these poems in the
space. The curators worked on the placement of the poem but this does not impact the challenge
potential of the work. In this case, wherever they were displayed, they would have had the same

Borderline Personality Disorder Paper
Psychiatric research on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) has increased in popularity over the
past few decades. It was included into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders
(Third Edition) in 1980. Over the years, professionals have found dramatically effective treatments for
a disorder that was once considered disabling. Even though Borderline Personality Disorder can be
hard to treat, it s usually comorbid with other disorders like depression and anxiety. Throughout this
paper, I will be focusing on background information, symptoms, and treatments of Borderline
Personality Disorder.
Borderline personality disorder was used to diagnose clients who didn t fit into commonly diagnosed
disorders. The term borderline

The Conformity Of Individuality In Henry David Twain s...
A nation is only as good as the people who comprise it. In regards to the United States, tragedy
permeates the nation when its citizens decide to conform to the standards imposed by the majority. As
a multitude of Americans alter themselves to fit in and be accepted, their individuality floats away into
the abyss. Nevertheless, the process of conforming may not always be such a bad thing. Conforming
gives Americans the ability to connect to species that holds immense value. A species greater than
anything they could have ever became while isolated. Now, although humans unconsciously conform
to the standards of others, this process of conforming is detrimental to all Americans as it diminishes a
person s self identity along with their true life s purpose. Every standard and regulation an American
abides by is influenced by their fellow citizens. The basic human nature of a person propels them to
conform to the lifestyle of others. This concept is present within Henry David Thoreau s Civil
Disobedience in which he explains that even the most successfully men can be imposed on [...] for
their own advantage. Thoreau implies that when a person is exposed to others of high authority or
legitimacy, they develop the desire to act like and feel acceptance from said persons. As Mark Twain
illustrates in his essay Corn pone Opinions , people base their standards of ideals on a matter of
association and sympathy, not reasoning and examination. Thus as humans rely heavily on

Research Paper On Alfred Adler
Compared to psychoanalysts of Victorian Era, Alfred Adler looked at psychology from a more holistic,
humanistic and positive perspective. He was convinced that the main focus should be shifted from
biological needs, drives and instincts to individual differences, experience, interaction and social
environment. Adler placed great emphasis on sibling and peer group relationships, social interest and
achieving perfection. He also introduced the terms inferiority and superiority complex, so commonly
used nowadays, to the world.
Inferiority, Superiority and Perfection According to Adler, the feeling of inferiority is an inseparable
part of human existence. And in order to overcome that feeling one must compensate. In other words,

Hence, his theory developed overtime and changed in resonance to how Adler solved his internal and
internal conflicts. In his early years, Adler focused more on how hunger for power and superiority
motivated growth and striving for perfection. Later in his life, he shifter his focus toward social
interest. Because of these changes some consider Adler s theory inconsistent or even scientifically
unreliable. Adler was considerably deterministic the process of personality formation and especially
about the time period when that happened. He claimed that once a personality is formed, it does not
change significantly. In Adler s opinion the formation of personality took place at the age of 4 or 5.
From the perspective of modern psychology, the extent to which Adler s theory about the order of
birth is scientific is highly debatable. Many of his concepts are not measurable or manipulable, and his
variable are neither physical nor behavioral. Adler did not consider measurement or an experimental
approach in general as the most efficient approach to

Recent estimates show that almost 215 million individuals worldwide suffer from diabetes and 80
90% of them suffer from type 2 diabetes (Narender et al., 2006). The sedentary lifestyle of increased
intake of high calorie food along with decreased energy usage contributes to the present growing
prevalence of type 2 diabetes and obesity (Aude et al., 2004). According to recent epidemiological
studies, approximately 90% of all the people with type 2 diabetes are or have been overweight, and
signified that obesity is a major cause and risk factor of type 2 diabetes and related metabolic
disturbances (Bray and Bellanger, 2006; Kahn et al., 2006). To decrease complications and negative
consequence of metabolic syndrome, the control of blood glucose and lipids is necessary (Moller,
2001). The currently existing therapeutic choices such as dietary modification or a combination of
synthetic hypolipidaemic, antidiabetic drugs have their own limits and undesirable side effects
(Lender, D. and S.K. Sysko, 2006). Because of this, new medicinal agents with properties on
monitoring both lipids and blood glucose are in excessive demand (Nammi et al., 2009).

Vulnerable Liability Case Study
The vision of change is the roadmap of the company desires to guide the initiative for the future. The
advice is to allow the vision statement to direct the realization of change. The technique is to direct the
change of various circumstances with perception and objectivity of the organization. Consequently,
the misuse of the vision declaration is to surrender the direction and focus (Palmer, Dunford, Akin,
2009). Therefore, the declaration of the navigator is desperate because different interpretations exist
among various employees.

The inefficient significance disrupts the original vision statement of the organization. In addition,
failure to believe the loyalty of staff confuses the objective of business (Eccles, New Quist, Schatz,
2007). Consequently, the attribute is of the heroic staff to reveal the inefficient authorities for
orchestrating a prosperous business. Therefore, from my personal experience, the authority of
knowledge proposes to uncover his self regard to embody his faithful conduct to influence the people
of the association.
Appearance
The director is the image of authority, which is essential to a productive organization. The image of
the caretaker is the relentless force to capture the vision of the organization. The coach empowers as
the interpreter transforms the vocabulary to elevate the perception of the organization. In addition, the
analytical approach of the nurturer executes the vision to achieve the support of consumers.
Furthermore, the navigator guides the operation through the release of the vision statement. The
morale, provides the essential frame point of analysis to secure the reputation of the organization for

The Sexual Orientation Of Parents Essay
Article 1: Stacey, J., Biblarz, T. J. (2001). (How) does the sexual orientation of parents matter?
American Sociological Review, 66(2), 159 183.
The goal of this study was to dispute the negative heterosexism perceptions attached to the
development of children with parents who identify as gay and lesbian. The authors focused on the
analysis of previous research findings, comparing the outcomes of the children from heterosexual
single mothers and homosexual parents, particularly lesbian mothers. These studies explored the
relationship between homophobia, the sexual orientation of the parents and the outcome of the child;
in addition to the influence on sexual preferences and well being of the children.
A critical finding from this study, was the belief that the discrimination surrounding homophobia is the
core reason as to why the concern behind sexual orientation of parents exists at all. This article found
a stronger correlation between the children, specifically daughters raised by lesbian mothers, and the
absence of typical gender identities associated with their behaviour, chosen activities and aspirations
for the future. These results suggest children of lesbian parenting are not forced to restrict themselves
to certain gender associated roles. When examining the sexual preferences and behaviour of the
children from both households, they found the children of lesbian mothers were more open to
considering a same sex relationship in their future. Although

In the specialty literature doubts persist in using this terminology, especially in relation to the scope of
the hospitality industry. Thus, a series of authors consider as part of this field only food and
accommodation services, perhaps because those benefits are offered under the same premises works
like industrial units, other authors, however, consider it appropriate a broader approach, including
leisure services and even the marketing of products.

The Significance of Kokoda
The significance of Kokoda for Australian s can be seen in many different ways. In a strategic sense
and also in a symbolic sense. Firstly, the Kokoda Campaign saved Australia from possible invasion, or
more precisely from being isolated from the United States of America . Secondly, Kokoda was the
battle that lead to victory in the Second World War, as well as to improvement of Australia s post war
practices and military operations. Symbolically, the Kokoda Track will be remembered when Australia

As the Kokoda fighting began in July 1942 , the scheme of both sides was in transition. The Japanese
felt it was time to defend their gains, and halt the fighting and advancing. But the Allies were thinking
differently. Having massive amount troops, ships, aircraft and supplies in New Zealand and Australia,
they made the decision to launch a counterattack to defend and retake some of the islands that were
occupied by the Japanese. Papua had no particular resource that they desired, but it was a useful link
in the chain of defences of the newly conquered area of Japan. So because Japan was quickly gaining
new lands closer to Australia, posing a threat to Australia s safety, the battle of Kokoda was the most
important Australian fought victory, in terms of winning the war. The campaign helped to shape
Australia s post war training practices and military operations. Although it was not they first victory
against Japan, it allowed the allies to make thrust forward through island hopping and ultimately win
the war. Kokoda was the battle that ended Japan s dominance and permitted the Allies to go on the
offence. Australia greatly learned from their Kokoda experience, and subsequently improved their
strategic thinking. They learned to not purely rely on naval defences, and realised that they cannot just

Essay On Operation Enduring Freedom
On September 10th 2001 a cold front swept through the East Coast with rain and thunderstorms that
would leave behind a cool clear morning on September 11, 2001. That morning started as normally as

The Effects Of Noxious Weeds On Rangeland
The Effects of Noxious Weeds on Rangeland
Seth Robbins
Noxious weeds can be very harmful to all aspect of rangeland. They can outcompete native grasses
and forbs causing a loss of forage to livestock and wildlife. A large number of noxious weeds have
been purposely introduced to the United States for purposes such as food, forage, fiber and decorative
ground cover. Programs have been created to help with the invasion of weeds. It s taken lots of time
and resources to get programs started up to be able to combat the effect of noxious weeds.
Noxious weeds have an adverse effect on the rangeland, if left unchecked they could overwhelm and
destroy all of the native grasses. A large amount of the noxious weeds that are causing issues today in
rangeland and public lands. Were at one time introduced for other purposes to either rangeland or non
rangeland areas. These noxious weeds are costing large amount of money to combat their invasion
onto rangeland, public, and private lands. Weeds are able to take over developing areas because of the
removal of native grasses or forbs and then leaving bare soil exposed. Many weeds thrive when bare
soil is present and after they have gotten their hold on the area it s very difficult to remove them form
it completely. Invasive species have been brought into the United States, some on purpose to help fill a
needed use and then latter getting out of control and creating a mess of what they have done to

Lake Toba Essay
1. Introduction 1.1. Toba Catastrophe Lake Toba is located in Sumatra, Indonesia (Figure 1). The Toba
Eruption was the last of three major eruptions, which occurred over the past million years, creating a
volcanic caldera1. The most recent eruption, also known as the Youngest Toba Tuff erupted around
73,000 (± 4000) years ago2. This created a global catastrophe that effected many species, including
humans. Many researchers have linked this even to the most recent bottleneck in human evolution
resulting in a dramatic drop in the human population to only about 3,000 to 10,000 in a very short
period of time3. 1.2 Definition of Supereruption The term supereruption was introduced after the Toba
eruption in 1992 to describe the devastating effects that occurred5. To this date, there is no strict
definition however; an eruption that can produce over 300 cubic kilometers of magma would have
global consequences and therefore, be considered super 6. The volume of magma that erupted from
Toba was much greater than any other eruption previously recorded2. The fragmental deposit from
such a large eruption can produce volumes of 1000km3 or greater7. Therefore, according to this
definition, the latest eruption of Toba can definitely be considered a supereruption. 1.3 Comparison to

Abigail Adams Analysis
The author of this document is Abigail Adams, a white female that is married to John Adams. She
lives in a time where women have no form of representation, and they live in the shadow of men.
Because of this, Abigail takes up a woman s traditional role and performs activities such as
manufacture clothing for her family, soap making, creating gun/cannon powder for her husband, and
other chores for the benefit of her household (Adams, Paragraph 12). Fulfilling this role has shaped
her by securing her inferiority to her husband and other males. She as a woman lacks power both
socially and politically when it comes to the opposite gender; however, it is just this that has cultivated
her attitude towards her government, the male sex, and even her own spouse. By requesting that her
husband remember to give rights to women, it shows that she was brave enough to present her
opinions even though they were unwelcomed (Adams, Paragraph 9). She is headstrong in the sense
that she is willing to rebel if she does not receive the proper representation that she is asking for. Also,
by mentioning that the women would rebel, Abigail displays her intelligence because she could
foresee the inevitable future if women s rights were not improved (Adams, Paragraph 9). She sees the
world for what it is, unjust. Moreover, her social and political inferiority did not result in ignorance.
Based on her vocabulary, writing style, and comprehension/expression of such complex ideas, she
reveals that she is

Digital Savvy Equals Excessive Use of Technology Essay
Digital Savvy Equals Excessive Use of Technology As a relatively affluent and highly educated group
of minorities, it is not surprising that Asian Americans are heavy influencers in the digital and media
spaces. Since many Asians actually came from countries with higher penetration of digital technology,
they are very fond of using the latest and greatest gadgets on the market. According to a report that
was published by the Nielsen Company in 2012, Asian Americans are digital pioneers , who adopt

Influenced by deep rooted cultures, traditional Asian parents are typically authoritative, strict and
overprotecting, with unaffectionate and implicit communication styles. In addition, language and
acculturation gaps, busy schedules, and economic necessities have also contributed to the various
parent children conflicts, family tensions and lack of communication that exist in Asian American
families. In general, Asian immigrant and refugee families often face difficulties that relate to their
migration experience and the ongoing adjustment to the American lifestyle and culture. Often times,
children in immigration and refugee families learn the language and acculturate faster than their
parents, and their adoption of American values and behaviors may conflict with those of their parents

A Paper On Tattoo Culture
Maddie Edwards
Humorous Discourse
Foundations Paper
Tattoo Culture When defining a term it first has to be understood, which is why American studies can
be incredibly difficult to define. Although using different ways of studying popular culture, in this
case tattoo culture, a better understanding of American studies can be formed. Specifically by using
the ideas of researching context to understand the time and surrounding area, self reflexivity to
understand how oneself is affected by this, and studying how the material and visual cultures of
everyday lives. Tattoos are one of these forms of popular culture, and the culture surrounding tattoos
exemplifies many of the characteristics of American Studies. When studying tattoo culture context is
significantly important, because a majority of the time this art form means something to the
individual. As Nash Smith discusses literary analysis only gives us part of the information that is
necessary in understanding where ideas stem from and how they became relevant. He also talks about
how the informations gathered from these sources needs to be interpreted in the light of a thorough
knowledge of class structure, of the stratification of taste according to levels of sophistication, and of
the different audiences in which different magazines and publishing houses addressed themselves. 1
While tattoos are not regulated by publishing houses and different magazines it is still helpful to
interrupt them based on the environment.

Essay about Bone Dreams by Seamus Heaney
Bone Dreams by Seamus Heaney An Analysis
Bone Dreams is an obscure and difficult poem to understand. In all my searching on the internet, I
found very little to help me in my analysis of this poem and so the ideas are basically my own. I might
be wide of the mark, but for anybody struggling to understand this poem, it might at least give you
some ideas of your own. I make no apology for asking questions or for sounding vague or even
muddled in places. I hope that this essay is of help to somebody, somewhere.
The poem begins in a thoughtful mood; the voice is relaxed, White bone found/on the grazing

grass. He uses tactile ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of course, you can also write with chalk, and the act of and implements of writing are often found in
the metaphors and similes of Heaney s poetry.
In the third stanza, the speaker touches it again and it is almost as if this act of touching for a second
time sparks off a series of thoughts, tangential in quality, and as tangents do, they move freely from
one image to another, imbuing the writing with a dreamlike quality. It is almost as if the bone has him
in a powerful trance. The bone, which has become part of the landscape, has transformed into a device
for releasing thought processes. Landscape, being one of the favourite themes of Heaney, is in itself a
part of history. It is the history of Ireland and its people and its landscape that often preoccupies the
poet and, here, we see some of this preoccupation allowed flight as his mind takes off in a series of
flickering thoughts and associations.
Almost as soon as this begins to occur, his thoughts start to take a hostile turn as he envisages being
able to, wind it [the bone] in the sling of mind , and pitch it at England , the old enemy. Again there is
the idea of the bone as stone, with the mind as a catapult. This obviously draws on the myth of David
and Goliath, where the bigger and stronger giant is vanquished by a small boy who is only

Soviet Union and the United States Race into Space
In 1957, the Soviet Union and the United States once rivals in the Cold War began to race for being
the best in spaceflight. The space race was eventually resolved in an agreement in 1972. Before this
agreement, each sent satellites in attempts to try to out do the other. Satellites eventually turned to
manned spacecrafts, which then turned to men on the moon. Now there is the International Space
Station, which is a permanently crewed and cooperative laboratory in space. All of this started with a
little friendly competition between the USSR and the United States. However, despite the fun space
typically is, the government should not spend any more time up in space and should spend its time
trying to correct the plummeting economy and other problems here on Earth.
Background
In order to truly understand space exploration, it is crucial to have a strong and accurate sense of
background knowledge of the space race. The foundation of rocketry was built by Wernher Von
Braun. Von Braun was the inventor of the rocket and the world s first ballistic missile the V 2 (The
Hunt). In 1932, he tested his rocket in front of the military, only to have it fail (Bellis). Over time he
was able to design and construct rockets that were able to function, like the previously mentioned V 2
rocket. The V 2 was an extremely deadly rocket; it travelled at 2,386 miles per hour with its load of
one ton of high explosive (Trueman). The rockets were later used in World War Two. About 1000 V2 s

Panera Bread Company Essay
A loaf of bread in every arm is the mission statement of Panera Bread Company (Vincelette Fogarty,
2010, p.1). Panera started as a small bakery under the name Au Bon Pain and grew to one of the

industry. Panera Bread is widely recognized for driving the nationwide trend for specialty breads
(Panera Bread, 2011).

The sale of Au Bon Pain lead to their corporate name change to Panera Bread Company. In the early
2000 s the company grew through franchise agreements, acquisitions and expansion. In 2010 Shaich
stepped down from his roll of CEO to the company s executive chairman to focus on concept and
strategy. Shaich had what he referred to as concept essence the blueprint of what he wanted to achieve.
Concept essence included a focus on artisan bread, quality products and a warm, and friendly, and
comfortable environment (Vincelette Fogarty, 2010, p4.).
Strategy
Panera has three business segments: Company owned bakery café, franchise operations and fresh
dough operations. The company s growth strategy was to grow their store profits, to increase
transactions and gross profits per transaction, use capital wisely and put into place drivers for concept
differentiations and competitive advantage (Vincelette Fogarty, 2010, p7.). In 2009 while everyone
else was experiencing the hard economic times Panera Bread was sticking to their strategic plan.
Panera did not lay off employees, or worry about closing underperforming stores. Instead, they
continued to add menu items and even increased prices on existing items. This strategy worked for
them and they were able to take advantage of clientele that came from fine dining. The company has

Character Analysis Of The Pit And The Pendulum
The Pit and the Pendulum Character Analysis Essay Edgar Allen Poe s The Pit and the Pendulum uses
horror and suspicion to build up not only the storyline, but the persona of the narrator in which is also
the prisoner. The characteristics of the prisoner ties within the story to create trippy feelings of fear
and unassertiveness of whether or not he is truly safe. From the trials that the prisoner has faced, his
characteristic of resourcefulness, pessimistic, and terror are revealed and play a salient part of his slick
escape. The prisoner exemplifies resourcefulness which is shown through his actions of survival.
Despite his unstableness, he still manages to remain clever in such a frightening situation. Poe asserts
that the prisoner is resourceful considering he uses the hem of his robe to plot out his area: I tore a part
of the hem from the robe, and placed the fragment at full length, and at right angles to the wall. In
groping my way around the prison, I could not fail to encounter this rag upon completing the circuit.
(Poe 3). Being that he uses his resources to find his way around the tomb, he learns that he is among a
treacherous pit which could mean death. This action alters the whole course of the story due to the
possibility of the prisoner falling into the pit. The prisoner continues to show signs of resourcefulness
in the toughest situations: Observing that I remained without motion, one or two of the boldest leaped
upon the frame work and smelt at the surcingle. This seemed the signal for a general rush. Forth from
the well they hurried in fresh troops. They clung to the wood, they overran it, and leaped in hundreds
upon my person. (Poe 8). Using the rats as a pathway to his freedom from the pendulum, his quick
thinking saved his life. With that being said, the prisoner uses his traits of resourcefulness to escape
without letting fear block his tactics. Poe reveals the prisoners aspect of showing pessimistic traits
through his thoughts of seeing the worst outcome of events. The prisoner states, It was not that I
feared to look upon things horrible, but that I grew aghast lest there should be NOTHING to see. At
length, with a wild desperation at heart, I quickly unclosed my

Essay On The Leisured Gentleman Of Letters By Howells
It is a form that Howells came to connect with the leisured gentleman of letters, a figure who, in the
larger culture, was increasingly and pejoratively being associated with the feminine, and consequently
with leisure and consumption (Kaplan 16).
The subject of divorce provided Howells the opportunity to show himself as a serious minded author,
who focused on matters of social significance. With his democratic philosophy, Howells wanted to
disturb a class bound order that hindered the growth of democracy in the same way he wanted to put a
truthful spin on the usual love plot. Howells recognized that divorce carried the potential to do both, in
real life and in fiction. However, not without complications. Riley explains how, After the ... Show

Howell describes how he
looked at her with strong self disgust [. . .]. There is something in a young man s ideal of women at
once passionate and ascetic, so fine that any words are too gross for it. The event which intensified the
interest of his mother and sisters in Marcia had abashed Halleck; when she came so proudly to show
her baby to them all, it seemed to him like a mockery of his pity for her captivity to the love that
profaned her. [. . .] Little by little his compassion adjusted itself to the new conditions; it accepted the
child as an element of her misery in the future, when she must realize the hideous deformity of her
marriage. His prophetic feeling of this, and of her inaccessibility to human help here and hereafter,
made him sometimes afraid of her, but all the more severely he exacted of his ideal of her that she
should not fall beneath the tragic dignity of her fate through any levity of her own. Now, at her
innocent laugh, a subtle irreverence, which he was not able to exorcise, infused itself into his sense of
her. (Howells, A Modern Instance 178)
Here, we watch as Halleck s intense emotional struggle begins to take shape. Marcia s baby is a reality
that wounds his moral value, provoking his own self disgust at his reaction. By showing him like this,
he indicates that self disgust is a realistic modification to these idealizing tendencies. However,
Howells displays Halleck as being too fragile to act inversely.

The reality that countries like North Korea, Iran, and Iraq are working on ballistic missiles. And that
terrorists who fly no national flag are trying to acquire chemical and biological weapons.
George J. Tenet, June 14, 2001
I. Introduction Terrorism is far from new to nations around the world. Attacks that make the headlines
in international news occur almost daily. However, each act of terrorism provides its own goal or
objective, which may or may not have a different aim than a previous attack, which makes the threat
even more difficult to prevent. Terrorism is a concept that is hard to define, but many government
organizations and authors around the world have defined or attempted to provide a definition of
terrorism. In spite of the lack of a single definition, terrorism is commonly referred to as a
phenomenon because it is constantly evolving. This, in turn, makes terrorism even more difficult to
predict and forecast.
Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) have been a significant fear since the attacks of 9/11. Al Qaeda
s use of airplanes as a weapon became the cause of mass terror and destruction to the American people
as well as the world. The threat of Chemical, Biological,

  • 3. Essay on Democracy in America Democracy is a unique type of government, and the purpose of this essay is to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses that a democratic government provides. I will detail that many components of this type of society are both strengths and weakness as each component has beneficial aspects as well as unavoidable pitfalls. A democracy is a government by the people, in which the power is vested in the people themselves. The people then elect representatives who conduct their power in a free electoral system. The Declaration of Independence, which says that all men are created equal, was written on the premise of a democracy. According to John Locke, who wrote The Social Contract, before acknowledging that an individual is part of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The laws of society are applied equally to everyone, but equitable to the circumstances. The same holds true for taxes: those with higher incomes pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes than those in lower tax brackets. Although not equally applied, the tax laws are equitable. Democratic laws are written in such a way as to allow interpretation depending upon circumstances. A thousand circumstances, independent of the will of man, facilitate the maintenance of a democratic republic in the United States Initially, laws are difficult to design because lawmakers can t think of every possibility, every scenario, and every obstacle that may present itself in the democracy. Despite these difficulties, laws keep society together and provide unity for the citizens. Advantages for creating laws, include, but are not limited to, providing direction for the collection of taxes, declaring clear expectations for compliance and punishment of citizens and elimination of chaos. A weakness of democracy is the Tyranny of the Majority . This is an inevitable pitfall, because in a democracy, the power is vested foremost in the people the constituting the society itself. Alexis de Tocqueville wrote on this concept: Democratic laws generally tend to promote the welfare of the greatest possible number; for they emanate from the majority of the citizens, who are subject to error, but who cannot have an interest opposed to ... • 4. Death Reporters A second work with elements that can foster intellectual and possibly emotional challenges is Death Reporters. As explained above, not only the series title can arouse curiosity, so can the individual work titles (e.g.: 6 + 27 + 5 ). When combining the title of the series with the title of the works, the visitor can come to understand that the numbers refer to the number of death casualties the reporters are announcing, hence the title Death Reporters. At first, this reflection can create a shock on an emotional level. However, the intent is for people to reflect on the appearance of these reporters when announcing catastrophes. Indeed, the artist wants to directly address the extreme sensationalism of mass media which feeds itself on bombastic news, hence embodying the lack of empathy in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is composed of two elements: a portrait with a stitching and a poem. The poems are the elements that create the emotional challenge. The texts are heavily charged emotionally, creating a strong reaction which could result from not being prepared for such representation of refugee life. It can be frightening, as people might not be accustomed to reading such stories. It can equally be moderately shocking, because even if people do understand that these are difficult moments in the lives of refugees through media coverage, it is not every day that they can learn about their journey in this way. Indeed, the texts are brutally honest about the atrocities they encounter on their way to the United Kingdom. In this case, the challenge is primarily due to the sitters who shared their stories via these poems. The artist is important since she initiated the project and decided to include these poems in the space. The curators worked on the placement of the poem but this does not impact the challenge potential of the work. In this case, wherever they were displayed, they would have had the same ... Over the years, professionals have found dramatically effective treatments for a disorder that was once considered disabling. Even though Borderline Personality Disorder can be hard to treat, it s usually comorbid with other disorders like depression and anxiety. • 6. The Conformity Of Individuality In Henry David Twain s... A nation is only as good as the people who comprise it. In regards to the United States, tragedy permeates the nation when its citizens decide to conform to the standards imposed by the majority. As a multitude of Americans alter themselves to fit in and be accepted, their individuality floats away into the abyss. Nevertheless, the process of conforming may not always be such a bad thing. Conforming gives Americans the ability to connect to species that holds immense value. A species greater than anything they could have ever became while isolated. Now, although humans unconsciously conform to the standards of others, this process of conforming is detrimental to all Americans as it diminishes a person s self identity along with their true life s purpose. Every standard and regulation an American abides by is influenced by their fellow citizens. The basic human nature of a person propels them to conform to the lifestyle of others. This concept is present within Henry David Thoreau s Civil Disobedience in which he explains that even the most successfully men can be imposed on [...] for their own advantage. Thoreau implies that when a person is exposed to others of high authority or legitimacy, they develop the desire to act like and feel acceptance from said persons. As Mark Twain illustrates in his essay Corn pone Opinions , people base their standards of ideals on a matter of association and sympathy, not reasoning and examination. Thus as humans rely heavily on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Research Paper On Alfred Adler Compared to psychoanalysts of Victorian Era, Alfred Adler looked at psychology from a more holistic, humanistic and positive perspective. He was convinced that the main focus should be shifted from biological needs, drives and instincts to individual differences, experience, interaction and social environment. Adler placed great emphasis on sibling and peer group relationships, social interest and achieving perfection. He also introduced the terms inferiority and superiority complex, so commonly used nowadays, to the world. Inferiority, Superiority and Perfection According to Adler, the feeling of inferiority is an inseparable part of human existence. And in order to overcome that feeling one must compensate. In other words, be willing to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hence, his theory developed overtime and changed in resonance to how Adler solved his internal and internal conflicts. In his early years, Adler focused more on how hunger for power and superiority motivated growth and striving for perfection. Later in his life, he shifter his focus toward social interest. Because of these changes some consider Adler s theory inconsistent or even scientifically unreliable. Adler was considerably deterministic the process of personality formation and especially about the time period when that happened. He claimed that once a personality is formed, it does not change significantly. In Adler s opinion the formation of personality took place at the age of 4 or 5. From the perspective of modern psychology, the extent to which Adler s theory about the order of birth is scientific is highly debatable. Many of his concepts are not measurable or manipulable, and his variable are neither physical nor behavioral. Adler did not consider measurement or an experimental approach in general as the most efficient approach to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The sedentary lifestyle of increased intake of high calorie food along with decreased energy usage contributes to the present growing prevalence of type 2 diabetes and obesity (Aude et al., 2004). According to recent epidemiological studies, approximately 90% of all the people with type 2 diabetes are or have been overweight, and signified that obesity is a major cause and risk factor of type 2 diabetes and related metabolic disturbances (Bray and Bellanger, 2006; Kahn et al., 2006). To decrease complications and negative consequence of metabolic syndrome, the control of blood glucose and lipids is necessary (Moller, 2001). The currently existing therapeutic choices such as dietary modification or a combination of synthetic hypolipidaemic, antidiabetic drugs have their own limits and undesirable side effects (Lender, D. and S.K. Sysko, 2006). Because of this, new medicinal agents with properties on monitoring both lipids and blood glucose are in excessive demand (Nammi et al., 2009). The goal of this study was to dispute the negative heterosexism perceptions attached to the development of children with parents who identify as gay and lesbian. The authors focused on the analysis of previous research findings, comparing the outcomes of the children from heterosexual single mothers and homosexual parents, particularly lesbian mothers. These studies explored the relationship between homophobia, the sexual orientation of the parents and the outcome of the child; in addition to the influence on sexual preferences and well being of the children. A critical finding from this study, was the belief that the discrimination surrounding homophobia is the core reason as to why the concern behind sexual orientation of parents exists at all. This article found a stronger correlation between the children, specifically daughters raised by lesbian mothers, and the absence of typical gender identities associated with their behaviour, chosen activities and aspirations for the future. These results suggest children of lesbian parenting are not forced to restrict themselves to certain gender associated roles. When examining the sexual preferences and behaviour of the children from both households, they found the children of lesbian mothers were more open to considering a same sex relationship in their future. • 31. Character Analysis Of The Pit And The Pendulum The Pit and the Pendulum Character Analysis Essay Edgar Allen Poe s The Pit and the Pendulum uses horror and suspicion to build up not only the storyline, but the persona of the narrator in which is also the prisoner. The characteristics of the prisoner ties within the story to create trippy feelings of fear and unassertiveness of whether or not he is truly safe. From the trials that the prisoner has faced, his characteristic of resourcefulness, pessimistic, and terror are revealed and play a salient part of his slick escape. The prisoner exemplifies resourcefulness which is shown through his actions of survival. Despite his unstableness, he still manages to remain clever in such a frightening situation. Poe asserts that the prisoner is resourceful considering he uses the hem of his robe to plot out his area: I tore a part of the hem from the robe, and placed the fragment at full length, and at right angles to the wall. In groping my way around the prison, I could not fail to encounter this rag upon completing the circuit. (Poe 3). Being that he uses his resources to find his way around the tomb, he learns that he is among a treacherous pit which could mean death. This action alters the whole course of the story due to the possibility of the prisoner falling into the pit. The prisoner continues to show signs of resourcefulness in the toughest situations: Observing that I remained without motion, one or two of the boldest leaped upon the frame work and smelt at the surcingle. This seemed the signal for a general rush. Forth from the well they hurried in fresh troops. They clung to the wood, they overran it, and leaped in hundreds upon my person. (Poe 8). Using the rats as a pathway to his freedom from the pendulum, his quick thinking saved his life. With that being said, the prisoner uses his traits of resourcefulness to escape without letting fear block his tactics. Poe reveals the prisoners aspect of showing pessimistic traits through his thoughts of seeing the worst outcome of events. The prisoner states, It was not that I feared to look upon things horrible, but that I grew aghast lest there should be NOTHING to see. At length, with a wild desperation at heart, I quickly unclosed my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Essay On The Leisured Gentleman Of Letters By Howells It is a form that Howells came to connect with the leisured gentleman of letters, a figure who, in the larger culture, was increasingly and pejoratively being associated with the feminine, and consequently with leisure and consumption (Kaplan 16). The subject of divorce provided Howells the opportunity to show himself as a serious minded author, who focused on matters of social significance. With his democratic philosophy, Howells wanted to disturb a class bound order that hindered the growth of democracy in the same way he wanted to put a truthful spin on the usual love plot. Howells recognized that divorce carried the potential to do both, in real life and in fiction. However, not without complications. Riley explains how, After the ... There is something in a young man s ideal of women at once passionate and ascetic, so fine that any words are too gross for it. The event which intensified the interest of his mother and sisters in Marcia had abashed Halleck; when she came so proudly to show her baby to them all, it seemed to him like a mockery of his pity for her captivity to the love that profaned her. [. . .] Little by little his compassion adjusted itself to the new conditions; it accepted the child as an element of her misery in the future, when she must realize the hideous deformity of her marriage. His prophetic feeling of this, and of her inaccessibility to human help here and hereafter, made him sometimes afraid of her, but all the more severely he exacted of his ideal of her that she should not fall beneath the tragic dignity of her fate through any levity of her own. Now, at her innocent laugh, a subtle irreverence, which he was not able to exorcise, infused itself into his sense of her. (Howells, A Modern Instance 178) Here, we watch as Halleck s intense emotional struggle begins to take shape. Marcia s baby is a reality that wounds his moral value, provoking his own self disgust at his reaction. By showing him like this, he indicates that self disgust is a realistic modification to these idealizing tendencies. However, Howells displays Halleck as being too fragile to act inversely. ... • 33. Easterling John Harwood Analysis John Harwood is an associate professor of modern and contemporary architectural history at Oberlin College in Ohio. States that Easterling not only reveals the magical strangeness of global realities but also opens up new strategies and tactics of response. Indeed, one of her most refreshing achievements here is to clear away the mythological bluster that continues to characterize what she terms left or right politics [or] the politics of resistance in favor of an attitude simultaneously more cynical and more utopian. All of which is to say that Easterling emphatically refuses to take the temptingly lazy approach, which would be to address globalization by simply lampooning its symptoms, such as the empty mantras of corporate discourse, or ... • 34. Response To Research (Polymorphic) Worm Detection Summarize the existing work in the literature on the topic chosen. Choose three articles or pieces of literature. Deliverable: two page literature survey I have chosen to research (Polymorphic) Worm (detection) because I do not have any knowledge of how it works, spreads or transfers. I question these types of malware or viruses and would like to understand better how they work and if they could become terminal for our PC s. I clean my PC s via a service monthly and still wonder if there are certain virus/worms and other forms that are permanent. I have started to do a little research already, and I am glad I have chosen this topic. By doing so, I will be able to gain knowledge of the worm and its capabilities. As for the security community and is the worm still relevant I would say yes continuous attacks happen every day. My last work location had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first article I found gave me a better foundation for what the (Polymorphic) Worm is, where it targets and how it spreads. This particular worm spread using the internet and targeting Internet Security Systems (ISS) buffer overflows. This ISS attack using overflow is the same type of breach we practiced in one of our previous assignments this semester. The article titled The spread of the Witty worm discusses what it looks for and how it accesses the Internet Security Systems. Using the ISS path the Worm takes advantage of a security flaw in the firewall applications. Once breached the worm then uploads its payload contained in a phrase, (^,^) insert witty message here (^, ^). (Moore, 2004) This article addressed several of my concerns how what, and where? With the what? The article talks about once infected could it be removed. Chemical, Biological, Radiological, And Nuclear Weapons CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL, RADIOLOGICAL, AND NUCLEAR WEAPONS: THE NEXT FACE OF TERRORSM A Master Thesis (Draft) Submitted to the Faculty of American Public University by Brock A. Lindsey Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts July 2015 American Public University Charles Town, WV The reality that countries like North Korea, Iran, and Iraq are working on ballistic missiles. And that terrorists who fly no national flag are trying to acquire chemical and biological weapons. George J. Tenet, June 14, 2001 I. Introduction Terrorism is far from new to nations around the world. Attacks that make the headlines in international news occur almost daily. However, each act of terrorism provides its own goal or objective, which may or may not have a different aim than a previous attack, which makes the threat even more difficult to prevent. Terrorism is a concept that is hard to define, but many government organizations and authors around the world have defined or attempted to provide a definition of terrorism. In spite of the lack of a single definition, terrorism is commonly referred to as a phenomenon because it is constantly evolving. This, in turn, makes terrorism even more difficult to predict and forecast. Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) have been a significant fear since the attacks of 9/11. Al Qaeda s use of airplanes as a weapon became the cause of mass terror and destruction to the American people as well as the world. The threat of Chemical, Biological, ...
