Teaching Assistant Reflection
In my third year at SBU I became a teaching assistant (TA) for the biology lab courses. Every
week a graduate TA (GTA) and I held a 3 hour lab course with 24 students. Alternating roles with
the GTA, one week I would introduce the topic of the lab and the next week I would prepare the
tools and reagents while checking assignments. Afterwards, the GTA and I would patrol the room
to ensure every student was on track to finish while answering questions. I prepared for every lab
by attending a 3 hour course where the TAs completed the lab and reviewed any questions the
students might have. Outside of the lab I helped proctor exams and spent one hour weekly in the

The study of personality is very important in the field of psychology because it aims to provide
an account for individuality of human beings (Pervin and John, 1999). There are many
psychological definitions which attempt to explain personality in terms of characteristics or
typical qualities of an individual. Gordon Allport, defined it as a dynamic organization, inside the
person, of psychophysical systems that create the person s characteristic patterns of behavior,
thoughts and feelings (Allport, 1961, p. 11). Throughout the existence of this idea, psychologists
have attempted to find ways to assess personality, creating different tests and theories, for
example the Big Five Model of personality traits. This model, also known as the Five Factor

Identity is important and relevant because of how we view today s notion of real Americans. The
United States is a fairly young country in comparison to other countries. Families in the United
States have been around for several generations, and we know that people will often ask
themselves where their roots actually come from, and are willing to learn more about themselves.
Intermarriages have caused people to have different identities or ethnicities such as Chicano,
mestizo, Hispanic and several others (Holmgren 6). As we know, there are many cultures in the
world, and in countries like the United States and Mexico people will often wonder where their
family comes from and wil start to think that their culture makes them different to other people.
