Cloud Atlas is a book composed of six different writings from a multitude of writers such as Adam
Ewing, Cavendish, Sonmi, and Frobisher. These stories are written in a different time period but show
a lot of the same ideals and themes. There are many themes that present themselves in cloud atlas but
the one that appealed to me most was greed. Mitchell did a very good job in showing greed in each of
the chapters in a variety of different ways whether it was a minimal or large amount. In addition, the
author also related both the future and the past to the current time to show what is arguably the worst
characteristic one can have. I believe that Mitchell chose the theme of greed to show that all humans
will do nearly anything to satisfy their personal needs and wants. While reading Cloud Atlas I realized
that there is at least minimal traces of greed in each writing. The writing of Adam Ewing, Luisa Rey,
Sonmi 451, and Cavendish expressed the most greed out of the six.

to have hope despite how powerless they are. In the plot of Marigolds, Collier describes Lizabeth, a
girl born into poverty who is unaware of the hardship surrounding her and her family. One summer
day, Lizabeth and her friends taunt Miss Lottie by throwing pebbles at her and her marigolds. Miss
Lottie and her son, John Burke chase the kids away. Afterwards, all of the kids gather around to
celebrate their latest escapade,everyone except Lizabeth. She and her brother head home and sleep
until Lizabeth wakes up from hearing her father cry. That was the moment she realized that she and

The fictional town of Bayonne in A Lesson Before Dying is based on a plantation where the author
Ernest J. Gaines was born. This novel took place in the late 1940s a time when radical discrimination
was a major problem, and the Jim Crow laws validated segregation and discrimination. Although the
major personalities are males, there are three female characters that influence the males to solve the
difficulties in their life they would usually ignore. Each female character persuades and motivates
Jefferson and Grant from running away from their responsibilities. Tante Lou and Miss Emma
convince Grant to make Jefferson die like a man and not a hog, and Vivian makes Grant stay in the
quarter and not run away from his purpose in his life.
One of the first female characters introduced is Miss Emma, Jefferson s godmother. The first
description of Miss Emma is in the courtroom where she is described as a heavy set woman weighing
approximately two hundred pounds. We know she is a caring woman because while in the courtroom
she never got up to use the bathroom or get a glass of water. Even though she may not be strong
enough to sway the juries mind or protect Jefferson of the unfair sentencing of death by electrocution.
She is strong enough to stay in the courtroom and give the support that Jefferson needs. Everyone by

In recent generations, typical looks or ideas have dominated fashion. People write about this topic
through articles, newspapers, and papers. While models style and display the most recent styles, they
also represent what women should look like. Not until very recently, people have realized that not all
women look like models, unless they starved themselves or worse. In the poems, Fat is Not a Fairy
Tale and The Pink Car , the authors convey their main message of the poem as the social aspect of the
world and what they believe has the characteristics of the ideal person by using imagery and
personification. Admiration for individuality, a common theme throughout The Pink Car , was
constantly mentioned through the words of the Mark Halliday. Furthermore, Halliday personifies the
cars in the poem as people; specifically focusing in on the pink car. He repeatedly describes the other
cars in a jaundiced way; for example, he would characterize these cars as boisterous, rowdy, and big.
However, he identifies the pink car as disparate, one who does not worry or care about other cars
perspectives. The author wrote, Other cars might honk their horns to seem big // the pink car doesn t
honk and doesn t worry (Halliday 25 26). Halliday symbolizes the car as pink because society
