Mental Endurance in Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage
Mental Endurance in Alfred Lansing s Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage
In Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage, Alfred Lansing recounts the tale of one of the
greatest successes of the Twentieth Century. Ironically, Lansing s detailed account of the 1915
Trans Antarctic Expedition illuminates the stark reality that Sir Ernest Shackleton s expedition did
not fulfill its goal. In fact, the expedition never even set foot upon the continent that they had
intended to cross. The outstanding success of that motley crew of adventurers was in their ability to
endure the harsh Antarctic climate. Despite having their ship crushed by an ice cap, spending the
dark Antarctic winter hopelessly alone, suffering through a stormy voyage in ... Show more content

In order to endure, one must get along with himself to prevent the self pity that cripples the human
organism, and he must also cooperate with his peers unless he wants to abandon any help he might
have received from the resourceful human community around him. There it is then, Shackleton s
indefatigable trait, the positive attitude that permits people to explode through obstacles by the
means of cooperation of mind, body, and peers.
While I am not as experienced in the faculty of endurance as Shackleton was, my trials as a
distance runner have bequeathed me with a concrete idea of what endurance is. My debilitating
cramps, my slogs through mud pits that were formerly legitimate trails, and my stomach emptying
wretches on the side of the sizzling track have enstilled in me the prerequisite for a belief that what
I am doing really matters. When I fail to maintain a positive mental attitude, my exhausted legs
slow in their powerful dance; they simply refuse to go any faster as the blanket of apathy
envelopes me. Although my running horror story pales in comparison to Shackleton s epic of
frostbite and starvation, the workout early on a rainy Saturday morning in November required
that I suck it up and believe in what I was doing. I had already run three one mile repeats at a
ridiculously fast rate of speed over the trail with the biggest hill in site. When Coach asked

Jean Rhys s Wide Sargasso Sea Essay
In Jean Rhys s novel Wide Sargasso Sea, Edward Rochester can be considered as an embodiment
of patriarchal and colonial oppression. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, patriarchal
means, relating to, characteristic of, or designating a society or culture in which men tend to be
in positions of authority and cultural values and norms are seen as favouring men... ( Patriarchal )
moreover colonial means of, belonging to, or relating to a colony... ( Colonial ). In addition,
oppression means prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority, control, or power;
tyranny; exploitation ( Oppression ). In order to discuss Edward s role in patriarchal and colonial
forms of oppression, his marriage, and emotional connection to Antoinette, symbolic representation,
and cultural differences will be analysed and discussed, focusing on any evidence of both forms of
oppression.
Through Edward s marriage to Antoinette, one can see his colonial British background and how
this influences his role as an embodiment of patriarchal oppression. For instance, Edward is
looking to take the stature of a matured and wealthy, independent male by British standards
(Kendrik 235). In order to achieve this Edward needs to present as a dominant and independent
husband in possession of a submissive and dependant wife. This leads Edward into never
completely accepting Antoinette as an equal as he views her as a prized possession obtained
through marriage; her beauty and wealth carrying

Chaos in King Lear
A device which Shakespeare often utilized to convey the confusion and chaos within the plot of
his plays, is the reflection of that confusion and chaos in the natural environment of the setting,
along with supernatural anomalies and animal imageries. In King Lear, these devices are used to
communicate the plot, which is summarized by Gloucester as: #8230;This villain of mine comes
under the prediction: there #8217;s son against father. The King falls from bias of nature: there
#8217;s father against child. (Act 1, Sc.1, 115 118) The #8220;bias of nature #8221; is defined as
the natural inclination of the world. Throughout the play King Lear, the unnatural inclination of

(Act 1. Sc. 2, 125 133) As a result of the irrational acts of trust by Lear and Gloucester, the state of
England crumbled due to corruptness and treachery of Regan, Goneril and Edmund. At the point of
ultimate chaos, Lear is disdained by his two evil daughters and has none of the power and
honour of his kingship, and the state of nature reflects this chaos in the form of a tumultuous
storm: Blow winds and crack you cheeks! Rage, blow! #8230; Crack nature #8217;s molds, all
germens spill at once That makes ingrateful man. (Act 3, Sc. 2, 1 11) This is evident that the
chaotic state of the plot is reflected by the chaotic state of nature. This storm also enters the play
at a point where Lear can be observed as near madness in his mental state. Lear #8217;s unstable
emotions causes him to remain in the rain, even as Kent has found a place of shelter: The Body
#8217;s delicate. This tempest in my mind Doth my senses take all feeling else Save what beats
there. (Act 3, Sc. 4, 15 17) From Lear #8217;s emotions of disgust towards his ungrateful older
daughters, comes words of malice depicting his two daughters as conniving animals which have
wounded the parent. Lear proclaimed Goneril and Regan as

Effect Of Change During The Post Independence Period
Chieftaincy has continued to experience pressures of change during the post independence period.
The introduction of the central government system in Ghana interfered in the institution of
chieftaincy and reduced much of the authority and the power of chiefs (Boadi 2001, 20). However,
despite these two major changes, chieftaincy is still very important in Ghana. Moreover, those
pressures did not affect the religiosity of chieftaincy, which have always served as a hindrance to
the involvement of Christians (Safo Kantanka 1993, 53).
Christianity in Ghana
When European missionaries arrived on the Gold Coast (now Ghana), they deemed certain
indigenous practices unholy and contradictory to Christian teachings. Christianity also affected the

Today the notion of traditional practices like ancestor worship contradicting Christianity is central
to the discussion of chieftaincy and Christianity. For example in Ghana home movies, traditional
indigenous practice like ancestor worship and the pouring of libation is seen as backward and
unholy. In her article, Between Customs and Christianity, Naomi Wellings states,
Many [Christian chiefs] had faced criticism from other Christians who believed they could not
carry out the various sacrifices or drink offerings to ancestors required of them traditional spiritual
customs which imply a belief in the spiritual power of the dead to change life for the living and
which some Christians view as idolatrous. (Wellings 2006)
Christian chiefs face the dilemma of whether to embrace Christianity and forsake all traditional
religious practices or denounce Christianity? There are different views regarding whether a
Christian can become a chief. The issue of concern regards to the following questions: Is it
possible for a Christian to be a chief and still fully be committed to God and follow the teachings
and commandments of God? Is it sinful to be a Christian and a Chief? Should the church allow a
Christian to become a traditional chief? There are different views regarding the topic of chieftaincy
and Christianity.
Can Chiefs Truly Practice Christianity? No. Some scholars and Christians believe that it is

TV Watching Impact E-Commerce
The article To buy or not to buy: how increased TV watching impacts e commerce shows how
changes in television viewership and online streaming have affected marketing strategies. With the
increased use of internet streaming, cable television is quickly diminishing and is forcing a change
in how marketing strategies are targeting various audiences.
While television continues to be one of the top forms of entertainment, the methods to view
television programs are evolving due to new devices. Currently, 83% of consumers watch
television broadcasts at least once a week, however, more people are beginning to use mobile
devices to stream videos and television programs. Approximately 63% of consumers have
indicated that online streaming is more convenient as they are able to watch what they want when
it is best for them. The number of consumers using mobile devices to watch various types of
online streaming is continuing to grow. The increase in mobile device usage is not limited to the
younger generations, about 41% of 65 69 age group have shifted from television to watching
YouTube. Additionally, over the past several years, about 12% of television viewers have reduced
their televisions packages while an another 11% have eliminated it completely. Due to this increase
in internet usage for streaming, consumers shopping habit have changed. According to research

Analysis Of The Passing Of Grandison And Quentin...
Humor. Mockery. Relationship Goals. Can you consider these three things in a story about slavery?
Slavery is typically a sensitive and serious topic. In Charles W. Chesnutt s short story, The Passing
of Grandison and Quentin Tarantino s film, Django Unchained , these three components were
combined for entertainment purposes. In this essay, I will implement the comparison that both the
short storyand film shows with the three component of humor, mockery and the relationship goal
of a slave. The Passing of Grandison was humorous in many ways. The humor started the Colonel
s son, Dick Owens, trying to win a girl s heart by doing something kind by freeing a slave by
taking him to Canada. Chesnutt used humor by exposing the... Show more content on

In this story, Chesnutt changes the reader s initial perception of the characters, which was
humorous. Such as, even though Charity somewhat persuades Dick Owens to proceed in losing his
father s slave, she never believe that he would actually succeed. Dick returns home, and Charity
Lomax hilariously marries him, as she was mildly impressed her with his act. In the movie, Django
Unchained, Taratino humor comes in condemning the importance of slavery, which he makes fun
of events and groups of people that existed during the time of slavery. In the movie, there is a
white German bounty hunter named Dr. Schultz seeks out a slave named Django and buys him
because he needed him to find some men he is looking for. What so hilarious about this was that
Dr. Schultz could have used anybody beside a slave that was on the same plantation with the
men that Django might have known, he was not even certain that Django knew of these men he
was looking for. Also, in the movie, Taratino made the scene with Django changing wardrobe to
be a hilarious part of the movie. You can say that Django went from rags to riches, after Django s
freedom Dr. Schultz offers to buy him a new suit whatever he wanted. Django selects a blue two
piece with lace cravat and knickerbockers, he assumes that s what gentlemen (a free slave) would
wear, It was funny seeing Django walk in his new wardrobe because he thought he politically

Similarities Between Edith Wharton And Booker T Washington
Social Realism Social realism was a movement following the civil war where artists and writers
would focus and point out the conditions of the middle to lower working class. Unlike Regional
realism, social realism draws attention to the social structures and conditions that the majority of
the population was currently experiencing. Edith Wharton and Booker T Washington where two
important writers who wrote about their own experiences and of others to demonstrate the new
social structure changes at this time. The short story The Other Two by Edith Wharton is an
excellent representation of gender relation transformations and the nature of marriage at the turn
of the century. In the beginning of the story, we are introduced to a woman named Alice, whom
has been divorced 2 times and is currently on her 3rd marriage with a man named Mr. Waythorn.
Mr. Waythorn is happy with his new wife and is not bothered by the fact that she has already been
married twice. Certain situations arise so that Mr. Waythorn bumps into both of Alice s previous
husbands. He is uncomfortable meeting them at first however; he begins to have a new
understanding of his wife. When Waythorn meets Mr. Haskett, one of Alice s ex s, he becomes
disturbed that he is kind and tender person who seems to show a real gentleness to his daughter. He

freedom to attend school. When work got in the way, his resilient mother came to the rescue and

fast so he could leave work early to arrive at school on time. I got the idea that way for me to
reach the school on time was to move the clock hands from half past eight up to the nine o clock
mark (Washington, 686). I was curious though if Booker ever revisited his past owner in his later

Rape As A Weapon Of War
Being a part of a global community comes with many responsibilities and duties. People of the
global community have to be aware of the dangers that are present in the lives of many people
all over the globe. Human Rights issues are quite serious and violations of these rights should
not be taken lightly. In exploration of a global human rights issue, the discovery of rape as a
tool in war was a gross violation of human rights as well as overwhelmingly a gender issue. Rape
used as a tool of war has devastated and destroyed people, communities, families, and traditions.
When discussing rape as weapon of war, there are two main modern day conflicts that can not be
overlooked. Rape as a weapon of war is brought into light by the wars of Congo and Bosnia.
These two conflicts brought the eyes of the world onto the global issue of rape in war and more
specifically how it is used as a tool of ethnocide and genocide. The recent conflict in the Congo has
been rooted in the 1994 Rwandan Genocideand related violence in Burundi which saw hundreds of
thousands of Hutus flee both countries into eastern ZaГЇre. (First and Second) In the Rwandan
genocide, Hutu power groups (called the Interahamwe and the Impuzamugambi) led mass killings
of Tutsis and pro peace Hutus, murdering 800,000 people in approximately 100 days. (Congo) In
response, the Tutsi led Rwandan Patriotic Front, or RPF, overthrew the Rwandan Hutu government.
During and after the genocide, an estimated 2 million refugees,

When Is Animal Testing Wrong
Every year, ten to one hundred million animals are tested on. Rats and mice were two thirds of that
total. In addition to that there are one hundred and eighty thousand dogs, fifty five thousand cats,
five hundred thousand rabbits, a similar number of guinea pigs, and sixty thousand primates. With
these numbers why still test on animals? Animal testing needs to stop. It is wrong. These animals
are dying from neglect and harsh conditions. Animal testing is not even one hundred percent
accurate! People have talked about the pain and the conditions they had lived in during the breeding
experiments during World War Two. Again, why is animal testing still a thing?
In just one case of animal testing over 30 primates are dead. The primates ... Show more content on

However, people can. During World War Two Nazi physician Josef Mengele did experiments on
twins. These twins were interviewed and talked about what they endured. Giving blood and
submitting to X rays and injections were daily options to death, even though most, if the twins
would eventually die painful deaths. These people can talk about what it was like to be poked,
prodded, and used. They felt shame that they had survived not because they were strong, but
because they were all freaks of nature One survivor said that after all these years he cannot
reconcile his experiences. Animals are in the same predicament except, they can t tell us their pain
or talk about what happens. These people were in the same place as the animals. If we won t do it to
people why are we doing it to animals?
In conclusion, animal testing is wrong and it needs to stop. These animals are dying from things
that can easily be avoided. The animals that are tested on don t always bring accurate results.
People have talked about their experience with being tested on, yet we continue to use animals.
These animals are innocent and most of them only know life I m the testing facility. That is no way

High School Reflection Essay
Have you ever just felt like high school was too easy? Well I have because I felt like the teachers
just passed you on. They didn t give me a challenge like I was supposed to have and from that
being, now I have to prepare myself for the college life and teach myself the things I was supposed
to be taught in high school. The schoolI came from didn t have a math teacher or a history teacher
all year so we just sat in the class rooms and played everyday all day and I still ended up passing
and that school was Albany Early College. They told me that I would finish high school with an
associate degree but all I got was a discombobulated school and an uncontrolled school. The next
school I went to didn t care either. They showed me that I can skip class everyday and still pass
with an A average. Despite all the things I didn t get taught in high school, I did learn some unique
aspects that I can reflect on and use for college. The skills I reflect on are annotating, using the
Cornell note taking system, and how to be on time for school.
To begin with, the first aspect I reflect on from high school is annotating. Annotating helped me a
lot when I was taking final exams and other test. This is one of the most I reflect on because I
can use this skill to help me in college. I first learned how to annotate in the 11th grade when I
was at Monroe Comprehensive High School. The way my teacher showed me how to annotate
was to number the paragraphs then summarize the paragraphs individually, after doing that it
helped me understand the passage better as if it was hard to comprehend. My teacher also told
me to underline any sentences that look interesting to me and circle any words that I am not
familiar with and go and look them up after I was done. But you don t just annotate and be done,
but you have to go back and study what you annotated so you can get a full understanding of
whatever you re annotating. Annotating is a big skill that I was taught because I can use it in
other subjects other than English such as: History, Science, and other classes, but I can t annotate
the same way in every subject. For example: If I annotate math the same way I do in History then
my notes would be messed up because I am learning two

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Living on this earth is a privilege and unfortunately we sometimes take advantage of it. Stories of
deforestation, air and water pollution really make a person think of just how much our planet is
being harmed. A major concern is water pollution. Water covers at least 70 percent of the planet
which makes our rivers, lakes, and oceans essential. Many of these bodies of water are being
polluted and although they may be out of sight, they eventually help pollution increase. Actions
should be made to stop the pollution of our waters before things get worse. If we want to decrease
the amount of pollution it starts out by increasing the amount of recycling we do. It ... Show more

Sunlight does eventually play a part as it breaks plastic down into smaller pieces but that can just
make it worse. The plastic still never goes away it just becomes microscopic. Of the more than
200 billion pounds of plastic the world produces each year, about 10 percent ends up in the ocean.
(Earth Magazine). Most of that plastic eventually sinks, damaging life on the ocean floor. The
plastic that floats ends up in gyres, and settle in massive garbage patches that form there, much like
the Pacific Subtropical Gyre.
Plastic is a very useful material but when in the ocean, it endangers animal life. Small surface
debris, mostly plastic resin pellets are a common piece of marine debris. Because they are so small
they can easily get lost along the way, washing through the water with other plastics and into the
sea. Pollution like this is causing harm to sea animals such as the seabird; the albatross. The
albatross scoops its food from the ocean and without knowing picks up trash along the way. Plastic
debris along with other garbage is then fed to its young mistakenly for food. Of the 500,000
albatross chicks born here each year, about 200,000 die, mostly from dehydration or starvation. A
two year study funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency showed that chicks that died
from those causes had twice as much plastic in their stomachs as those that died for other reasons.

The Truman Show Film Review
The Truman Show is a science fiction film, which is directed by Peter Weir in 1998. Jim Carrey,
Ed Harris, Laura Linney these great stars join this film, and their acting is fantastic to play their
roles. The movie brings the audience a new experience, persuades people to explore and
consider the world they live. Peter Weir uses a simple way cleverly to show his concept through
a person s growth to show the life in the world. This film can lead the audience to experience the
fake, the love and the reality, to predict that after a person experiences these, what his life will be?
Moreover, setting, and star s acting are also the features of the movie.

Essay about Health Care Reform in the United States
Health Care Reform
Health care has been an area of discussion for some time now. In the United States, the current
health care system is a private system that allows individuals to choose their own method of care.
Despite the freedom that comes with the independent nature of this type of health care system, the
true disposition creates more problems than it solves. The privacy of the health care institutions has
caused affordability and access to become serious issues with this system. Additionally, those with
lower socioeconomic status fall short of the ability to access the same pool of resources as
everyone else. Due to the issues with affordability, access, and the poor infrastructure of the health
care system, a universal health ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These facts point out that the system currently at play is rather ineffective and therefore ought to
be changed. Money plays a huge role in access, therefore it is a vital issue to discuss. Within the
current system, lack of money results in lack of health care, which leaves thousands of people
without any health care coverage. Between 2001 and 2005, the number of people paying for health
insurance increased 30%, however income only raised 3% (Health Care Problems). Adequate
income is a necessity and unfortunately that is not present. According to the National Conference
of State Legislatures, the average annual premium across the country is $16,000. Currently, the
average annual income in the United States is $51,107. Mint Money Management suggests that
about 4 6% of one s total income should be spent on insurance, including life, disability, and health
insurance. However, the averages in the United States show that the average person spends about
31% of their income on health insurance, which is not financially beneficial. When this rise in
health insurance is not parallel to the inflation of income, innocent people are left without a
method to achieve health care. There is a program for those who can t afford health insurance out
of pocket nor have access to it, and that is called Medicaid. Issues still exist with the program.
There is only so much funding, which leaves many still uninsured. Additionally, people with
Medicaid have difficulty

Why We Should Not Participate In Competitive Sports

damage as there are many sports that don t have to do with playing with our heads like cross

from a head injuryin sports like track, football, soccer, and many more. Competitive sports can be

that overall having your child not participate in competitive sports is a good idea.I choose this

General Mechanism: i) Hello Packets: Used in order to establish relationships with the
neighboring routers in a topology. On multi access segments ad point to point segments, the
default time to send hello packets is every 10 seconds and for non broadcast multi access
(NMBA) segments like frame relay, the default time is every 30 seconds. ii) Dead Intervals: Wait
period for an OSPF router before termination the relationship with its neighbor is called as Dead
interval and is 4 times the hello interval. iii) Router Id: Identification of each OSPF router in an
OSPF routing domain is exclusively by the router id. OSPF router can chose highest IP address of
its loopback interface incase router id is not configured. IP address will be chosen by the OSPF
router of any of its physical interfaces in absence of loopback interfaces. iv) Area Id: In OSPF
routing domain the areas are defined as backbone routers also known as area 0, area border routers
(ABR), which connect the backbone routers to any other areas in the OSPF routing domain and
autonomous system border routers (ABSR), which are located between OSPF autonomous system
and non OSPF autonomous system.

Advantages Of Smart Watch
Smart watch vs. luxury watch, the battle for premier time A smartwatch is an automated
wristwatch which can run mobile applications, and allows one to access several functions such as
a calculator, compass, applications to book a cab and order groceries. This can also be used to
make or answer phone calls and to send text messages. There is a possibility that the luxury watch
industry may lose its customers to the smart watch industry. The luxury watches have had a high
brand value and have been a symbol of prestige, riches, status and classiness. The introduction of
smart watch by tech savvy companies such as Samsung, Motorola, Apple and Google has brought
increased competition in the watch industry.

Negatives Of Globalization
Globalization plays a defining role in the expansion of society, both politically and economically.
While globalization encompasses many different sectors of daily life, the negative implications of
the practice, such as exploitation of workers, damage to the environment of the host country and
cultural deterioration outweigh any rewards earned through the process.
The entrance of Western corporations into Eastern countries may seem to benefit both the host
country and the corporation itself, however this is an unbalanced partnership, with the host country
bearing most of the downsides. A prime example of this is the hiring of cheap and unskilled labour
to fill positions in factories. Many countries with little to no labour regulations ... Show more

Because of the lack of strong, legal worker s unions in these countries, it becomes much easier to
exploit worker s labour in developing countries. In fact, this globalization is also detrimental to
workers in developed countries, as more and more factory jobs are outsourced to foreign
countries. In what is being described as the outsourcing tidalwave , professionals at the University
of California have estimated that nearly 1 in 9 of all American jobs are vulnerable to outsourcing
(Hira 1) due to competitive and cheaper labour markets in the East. Due to outsourcing, Western
workers are losing jobs to workers who are then forced to work in unsafe, unregulated and poorly
paid areas. In both circumstances, neither side gains from the other.
In a similar fashion, the environment of the host country undergoes a significant amount of stress
due to globalization. A particularly harmful effect is the loss of biodiversity in regions. David
Ehrenfeld wrote in his essay of the effects of globalization on the environment that India has
probably grown over 30,000 different indigenous varieties or landraces of rice. This situation has,
in the last 20 years, changed drastically and it is predicted that in another 20 years, rice diversity
will be reduced to 50 varieties, with the top 10 accounting for over three quarters of the sub
continent s rice acreage (Ehrenfeld 1).

The Importance Of Dreams In James Welch s Fools Crow
A dream is a wish your heart makes, when you are fast asleep. This nostalgic melody sung by
Disney s Cinderella expresses the importance and meanings that dreams can have. In Native
American culture, dreams are used as tools to guide one through life. Many big decisions made
by Native Americans are influenced by dreams. It is said that supernatural powers or omens
from spirits or gods are to be received via dreams or visions. In receiving them, magical abilities,
or the ability to look into the future can be bestowed onto one. In Fools Crow, James Welch,
illustrates several characters having visions and dreams. Throughout the book the dreams are
seen as visions of the future. Welch uses these messages to reflect upon Native American culture
and to foreshadow motives or events that will affect the characters later in the book. Mik api,
the medicine man has a dream about a raven. Mik api asked White Man s Dog to prepare the
sweatlodge, thus beginning White Man s Dog s apprenticeship to him. Mik api begins telling
him about a dream he had the previous night. As I slept, the Raven came down to me from some
high place... (52) He explains how the Raven had stumbled upon a four legged creature known
has a wolverine. The wolverine had been trapped into one of the Napikwans traps, Raven jumped

The Exodus Of The Beginning Of Israel
Exodus marks the start of Israel as a people. They were an extended family, under a dynasty of
strong pharaohs. They oppressed Israel and put them to forced labor, for fear of their number size.
Still, they multiplied faster, therefore, a decree was issued to destroy them by ordering the death of
all baby boys.
At this particular time Moses was born, from the tribe of Levi. Although trained as the son of
Pharaoh s daughter, yet, his own mother was hired to care for him due to her placing him in the
bulrushes at the edge of the Nile River to not be destroyed because of Pharaoh s order to kill all
baby boys. With his mother caring for him, he grew up knowing the plight of his people. Many
years passed approximately 80 when God appeared to Moses as a shepherd in Midian, in a burning
bush and commanded him to go return to Egypt to rescue the Israelites out of slavery.
From Egypt to Mt. Sinai
Moses was a new beginning for the Israelites. Moses was obedient to God and followed God s
pattern Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:1 11. He was also the forerunner (foreshadow of Christ) 2
Timothy 1:8 10. He was chosen by God to free Israel from Egypt Exodus 6:1 13. This was also the
fourth generation since Jacob Exodus 16 26.
The stage was set for Pharaoh to witness God s awesome power through Moses Exodus 7 9.

Summary Of KeatsOde To A Nightingale
Keats Ode to a Nightingale, can be classified as one of those most well known Odes to ever be
written. Although the poem is a tough lyrical poem to understand, it is as if the poet feels the
pain and bleakness from the day to day repetitiveness of life; therefore, seeks to disappear into
the make believe world of the Nightingale to find relief which eventually leads him to
acknowledgment. While listening to the Nightingale sing, the poet describes Greek and Roman
figures to enhance the feelings he is portraying. The poet described an inconsistent life of
contradictory using the concept of life and death. As well as, representing the struggle of reality
and fantasy achieved through a transformed state of mind. One can see the poet s feelings are
described by words that show the mood of the situation while his thoughts change throughout the
poem. The day to day life of the poet is filled with pain and disappointment. Although the poem
starts out with, My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains (Line 1), momentarily, the poet is
happy because of the singing Nightingale which he describes as, some melodious plot (Line 8);
and it Singest of summer in full throated ease (Line 10). The poet uses musical language to give
the audience the portrayal of how the bird is singing. Quickly, the narrator is filled with agony
because he remembers that life is unpleasant and could be explained in the third stanza, Where

Advise Violet and Sonny regarding their liability to Friendly Bank in relation to the Busy Bee
Florist Shop. Your answer must make reference to relevant provisions of the Partnership Act and
precedents.
Introduction
In order to advise Violet and Sonny regarding their liability to Friendly Bank in relation to the
Busy Bee Florist Shop, firstly it is necessary to examine whether a partnership relationship exists
between (a) Violet and Busy Bee Florist Shop; and (b) Sonny and Busy Bee Florist Shop.
Does a partnership exist?

However, Sonny knows nothing about the loan, so he is not a partner.
Violet
Violet s case is similar to the case Re Megevand; Ex parte Delhasse (1878) 7 Ch D 511 in which
the court considered the creditor a partner of the business concerned given that the creditor
(Delhasse) had the right to control the property, had all the rights a dormant business partner would
be expected to have, and rights to share profits and liability to share in losses.
In Violet s case, she has the rights of a partner: a right to share profits; to examine partnership
books and receives a quarterly business statement and has a partner s liability to share losses. She
is in fact a partner in addition to a lender, though it is expressly stated in the loan agreement that
Violet, being the lender, is not to be regarded as a partner of the business.
Violet s and Sonny s liability
Sonny
As Sonny is not a partner of Busy Bee Florist Shop, he has no liability to pay the debt to Friendly
Bank in relation to the Busy Bee Florist Shop.
Violet
As stated in the Partnership Act, Each partner in a firm...is liable jointly with the other partners
for all debts and obligations of the firm incurred while the partner is a partner, and after the
partner s death (his or her) estate is also severally liable in a due course of administration for such
debts and obligations so far as they remain unsatisfied.. . Thus being a partner of Busy Bee Florist

directly answer #8] The film, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, presents the Senate in a little
different fashion than that of the Senate today in real life. The first obvious difference is that the
Senate in the movie is still elected by the state legislature, basically the Governor, meaning that
the setting of the film would have to be sometime before 1911 and the passage of the 17th

of the people. There are many similarities in the film between the Senate of old and the Senate in
present day. This is probably because it takes a lot to change the institutions of the Constitution.
First is that there are still 100 Senators, two from each state, that the rules are still mostly the
same. [The process on how a bill becomes a law is still the same as far as presented in the movie.

The Network Structure Is Called Learning Beyond
Organization Description
The organization we will be working for to organize and implement their network structure is
called Learning Beyond. It is a small educational program that students can attend after school in
place of the after school child care. It provides a fun educational environment for students who
are in need of additional tutoring in certain subjects, or who wish to expand their knowledge
beyond the school day. As of right now, it is fairly small, but we would like room for additional
growth as the program gains popularity. The basic requirements are two main instructor computers,
10 student laptops, and one wireless printer. Internet access will be needed for each of these
computers as well. An additional building will later be provided at an alternate location that will
need to be connected to this main network. A Juniper Routerwill be needed, since the operating
system the computers will be running will be JUNOS. We will configure the network to be run on
the IPv6 addressing system, to prevent the need of reconfiguration when the mass crossover to
IPv6 occurs. The network needs to be configured to add any additional devices that will be needed
in the future as the program grows.
Configuring IPv6 on a Juniper router A router on the network will provide the ability to connect
multiple local area networks (LAN) together in order for them to communicate. In this case, we will
be using a Juniper router to accommodate the JUNOS operation system.

Compare And Contrast Tom Brady And Peyton Manning
Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have become household names in the past decade or so, and
for good reason. Both of these quarterbacks have shown game in and game out that they are
among the best to ever play. Anyone that knows the slightest bit about American football will
know exactly what someone means when they talk about these two in the Hall of Fame
discussion. So what makes these two quarterbacks different? Well, there is not much.
Throughout their storied careers, they have had to overcome hardships, which only reiterates
the point of their G.O.A.T. (Greatest of all time) status. These players are similar in their play
style and records, but are different due to the adversity and hardships each player has had to
overcome. The first and arguably most obvious similarity between these two players is that they
are two of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the position. Regardless if you ask someone that
dislikes either of these two, they will most likely agree that Brady and Manning have become the
face of the sport. When they take the field, they are unquestioned leaders and will always give
whatever it takes to push the team to success. Another glaring similarity between these two
quarterbacks is their athleticism and play style. Neither of these players were gifted with speed.
However, they more than make up for their lack of agility with their throws. Their understanding of
the game and the other team s defense allows them to make throws that would look close to

found with the test tube with only the t butyl alcohol. Students then find the freezing point of the
t butyl alcohol and the unknown mixture through using an equation that goes Temp =(m2b1

alcohol was 23.1 degrees Celsius and the mixture was 12.0 degrees Celsius. After finding the
two temperatures, we subtracted the average temperature of the t butyl alcohol and the freezing
point of solution to get 11.1 degrees Celsius. Then, we divided the 11.1 by 8.37 В°C/m to get the
molality, which was 1.32616 m. Afterwards, we found the moles of solute by multiplying the
kilograms of the t butyl alcohol (0.01898 kg) by the molality to get 0.025170 moles. To find the
molar mass, you divide the mass of the unknown by the moles of the unknown. When our group

Due to slow sales and less traffic at both Sears and Kmart, the two have decided to merge

Mart is a direct competitor with Kmart, Sears Holdings goal is not to compete with Wal Mart
directly, but find areas that have been overlooked by other retailers, and take advantage of the
expanded line of products the new company has to offer. Sears has had higher sales than Kmart, so

Changing some Kmart stores to Sears stores and bringing home appliances to Kmart, would offer
customers shopping for those products with more locations to choose from. As a customer, this
merger brings a wider array of products to more locations, making it easier to get everything you
might need in one place. The merger of these two corporations would create more jobs.
Sears is looking to create more of a presence outside of shopping malls, creating more Sears
locations in single store setups in a similar way to Kmart. Current CEO of Sears Alan J. Lacy,
will become the Vice Chairman of the new company. His strategy of opening more Sears stores
outside of the usual shopping mall would require many of the current Sears locations to be
closed. In the long run jobs at new Sears locations would have to be filled, but the creation of
those new jobs would have to be postponed until the new Sears stores are opened. In the meantime,
the news of many Sears closings would put many workers out of a job.
Currently Kmart has been constantly losing to competitors such as Wal Mart and Target. Target
is seen as a higher class store compared to the other two, and Wal Mart is seen as a good store
with good prices. Kmart has had trouble finding it s own identity. They try to market themselves as
being a better bargain than Wal Mart, but the store is viewed as being cheap from the customer s
point of view. Kmart tried to fix that, by bringing in the Martha Stewart line. They

Motives For Terrorism Essay
Terrorism is a type of violence used tactically in peace, conflict, and war. The threat of terrorism is
ever present, and an attack is likely to occur when least expected. In trying to find out what factors
can cause an individual to choose terrorism, it is first necessary to define what terrorism is. The
Department of Defense defines terrorismas the calculated use of violence or threat of violence to
inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals
that are generally political, religious, or ideological. Per the definition, the terrorists are not giving

This type of motivation is found to be a faith of the terrorist. The individual does not consider the
actions taken to achieve the agenda wrong and may tend to project antisocial motivations onto
others, creating a polarized we versus they outlook.(3) These members attribute only evil motives to
anyone outside the group. The resulting clarity of purpose appeals to those who crave violence to
relieve their constant anger.
The other common characteristic of the psychologically motivated terrorist is the pronounced need
to belong to a group. With some terrorists, group acceptance is a stronger motivator than the stated
political objectives of the organization. Such individuals define their social status by group
acceptance.
More often than not the groups goal may be nearly impossible to achieve. A group that achieves
its stated purpose is no longer needed; thus, success threatens the psychological well being of its
members. When a terrorist group approaches a stated goal, there may be an inclination to redefine
it. The group may reject the achievement as false or inadequate or the result of the duplicity of
them . When a solution is close to being reached, objectives change.
One effective psychological defense against success is to define goals so broadly that they are
impossible to achieve. Even if the world proclaims the success of a political movement, the

No matter what grade you re in, campus visits in any form are beneficial. A camp at the
university or college, a campus event, or your usual campus visit are all great ways to

great advice in this process for me which was what helped keep my somewhat levelheaded during
the college decision process.
Don t wait until senior year to do your visits
This is a sure way to be incredibly stressed out. Amongst all the efforts to survive the year, don t
put yourself in the situation of making a four hour trip one way to visit a campus. It s a huge mistake.
My mom got onto me about this. She was excited for me to be preparing for this next adventure in

With two of my visits, we drove down on Saturday, spent the night, did some seeing around town
(mostly involving food) on Sunday, and visited the campus on Monday in the morning so we
could drive back home on Monday. Make the most of your trip to the campus, especially if it s

The Four Idols In Bacon And The Four Idols Of The Mass
American journalist Isaac Goldberg once wrote , There is that smaller world which is the stage
, and that larger stage , which is the world . . In other words , people see or hear just go
worshipping blindly without to seek the truth . In addition to the four Idols in Bacon , where
Idols of the theater act like the allusion to describe the political system and religions . It has to be
the impact on the world . Although the audience watches the performance of actors and was easily
infected , they only can see the stage is in accordance with their mind to imagine the layout .
Through Idols of the Theater , Bacon has a good interpretation of human beings have no ability to
distinguish between reality and the false world . The newsis diversified . People know news is also
from the newspaper and network ; they were relying on the news besides just read the local
news . Moreover , news has always been reporting the real events , not fake which leading people
often believes / believed in the news reported . They are too blind to believe , and thus , it is
confused with the surface phenomenon . People ignore the real position . According to CNN#com
, last month FBI tracked CNN reported fake news about the Presidential election . A person
briefed on the investigation said . We were monitoring the news . . and legally protected from

The Importance Of Life As A Seventh Grader
CUSACK AM
CONFERENCE ESSAY
Last year as a sixth grader, I wasn t as irresponsible as I thought I was looking back on it now. I got
most of my homework in on time, I had good grades and I was organised. I had good friends to
help me through the hard parts and I like to think that I helped others as well.
One of the actions that helped me later in seventh grade was when I had study hall last year. It
definitely helped me realize to set aside time for homework. Plus it showed me how to keep
homework and school work in separate, prioritized sections in my life. Last year, with the
electives that I had, I was able to make friends outside of sixth grade and when I went into seventh
grade, I had people who had the same teachers from the year before help me with things I either
couldn t understand or needed advice for. Also, in that part of things, I talked to teachers that I
didn t have earlier, but later in the school year and I got to know some of them. Which definitely
helped me as a seventh grader, by knowing somewhat what to expect if I had them as my teachers.
Life as a seventh grader seems pretty easy compared to an adult s everyday life, but in the
moment it can be pretty challenging. One of the few challenges that I have faced happened
when I went to Ireland for two weeks. I only missed seven total school days and I tried to bring
most of my school work with me, but it still wasn t easy when I had missed lessons and tests when
I couldn t learn them from nearly five

The Pros And Cons Of The Global Information Age
The Global Information Age has inevitably transformed the world into a global village with an
elastic and wide range of digital connectivity. The digital era, specifically the cyberspace, has
become an infrastructure for various forms of development may such as in political, business,
economic and military aspects. Despite the advantages, the Global Information Age may be a
crucial avenue which may threaten national and international security and sovereignty. In an
international level, The United Nationshas been adamant in combating this issue with the adoption
of A/69/112 or the Developments in the field of information and telecommunications in the context

Phineas P. Gage Essay
Phineas P. Gage was born in 1823. He was a railroad construction worker outside a small town of
Cavendish, Vermont. On September 13, 1848, Phineas suffered from a traumatic brain injury,
which caused severe damage to parts of his frontal brain due to his accident at work. The day of
Phineas accident, he was performing his work duties on the construction of a railroad track. His
duty was to set explosive charges in holes drilled into large pieces of rock so that they could be
broken up and removed. He had to fill the holes with gunpowder, with a fuse, and then pack in
sand with a large tamping iron. Because gage was distracted on September 13, 1948, he forgot to
fill in one of the holes with sand. In result, when he went to pack down the... Show more content on

Barnum s New York museum. After that job he worked in New Hampshire as an assistant, and
for about seven years, as a coach driver in Chile. He was also worked on a farm before his death.
Gage moved to San Francisco with his mother in 1859. Sadly on May 21, 1860 Gage past away.
Neurologist Antonio Damasio has written significantly on Gage and other patients that he studied
on with similar injuries. Damasio viewed Gage s case as playing a crucial role in the history of
neuroscience, and stated that Gage s story was the historical beginnings of the study of the
biological basis of behavior . Gage s case inspired the development of frontal lobotomy, which now
is a psychosurgical procedure that leads to emotional response and personality traits. On the other
hand, historical analysis doesn t support this claim because Gage s injury didn t have enough
influence on the development of this practice. Gage not only suffered the accident but it had a
dramatic impact on his life. There was criticism of Gage s story including the doubts on accuracy
between scientific and popular discourse from Australian psychologist Malcolm Macmillan.
According to Macmillan there was little information about Gage s personality and habits before the
accident. The post traumatic psychological changes reported while Gage was still alive were less
dramatic than later reports had stated. A first report was printed in Ludlow, Vermont Free Soil
Union anonymously within twenty four

Children Lying Research Paper
It s a small thing that could blow up into a major issue, but in some cases, it could be the way
people save feelings. The way of sometimes hurting someone s feelings and sometimes boosting
their confidence is the human form of somewhat lying. Lying is sometimes the right thing to do
like lying to children, being private about personal business, and by protecting someone s feeling.
Children are built on conspiracies and fantasies like Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth
Fairy, and more. Those fantasy characters are the ones that make being a childworth living for. The
mornings of waking up on Christmas day opens a light in a child s eye. That moment of putting a
tooth under the pillow and waking to a quarter or dollar brings children

Classroom Management Plan Essay
Classroom Management Plan
Establishing a well organized plan for classroom management, at the beginning of the year, is
essential for a peaceful and calm classroom that is conducive to instruction and learning for students
with a variety of academic, social, and behavior needs. Team Green created the classroom
management plan that follows. The collaborative group agreed that the evaluation of the student
and their behaviors are essential in promoting positive desired behaviors. Room arrangement,
classroom rules, routine and transition, as well as positive reinforcement rewards/success of task
should be evaluated and adapted to encourage positive behavior.

Classroom Rules
Simple classroom rules created by the class will provide ownership and understanding. A daily
review of the rules will reinforce expectations. The first week of each quarter will include a
review of the explanations for the rules to reinforce the importance of rules. They will be posted
throughout the classroom as reminders for the entire class. Johnny will have a visual
representation taped to the top of his desk for continual cuing of expected behavior. (Sprick,
Garrison Howard, 1998).
All students will receive cueing when displaying minor disruptive behaviors. Students that display
more disruptive behaviors such as those causing the class to stop, running around the room,
throwing items in the room, or hitting will receive consequences (giving up their job, not earning a
star, may not participate in particular activities) for their behavior. Students that display proper
behavior will be reinforced with encouragement. (Sprick, Garrison Howard, 1998).
Classroom Routine and Transitions
The use of routines and transition plans are essential in managing student behaviors. We will
develop routines and transition plans that deter disruptive behaviors, such as Johnny s.
The beginning class routine will include playing quiet, calming music while

New England And Chesapeake Colonies Analysis
Starting off as a single colony, the New England colony eventually expanded to form the Middle
colonies, Southern colonies, and the Chesapeake colonies. The Chesapeake and New England
colonies both stemmed from England, but developed in a way that made them each very unique
in the way that they developed. Developing around different intentions, the New England and
Chesapeake colonies were unique due to their different economic and social structures. The social
interactions that the New England and Chesapeake colonies had between Indians and their own
people were very different due to alternate motives. Documents A and H each show the steps
taken in order to achieve social unity. It is obvious that the two colonies didn t have the best
relationship with the Indians, but both colonies had different approaches when it came to mending
relationships. Bacon s Rebellion was a revolt against Governor Berkeley of Virginia in 1676 that
started due to Berkeley s resistance of not fighting against the Indians because of the fur trade. This
showed that the Chesapeake colony would rather take a better economy as opposed to stable social
interactions, Now let us compare these things together and see what sponges have sucked up the
public treasure and whether it has not been privately contrived away by unworthy favorites and
juggling parasites whose tottering fortunes have been repaired and supported at the public charge
(Doc H). This statement by Nathaniel Bacon reflected the

Puritans In New England
The Puritans were a widespread and diverse group of people who took a stand in the 16th and
17th century in Europe. Their rise was directly related to the increased knowledge that that came to
the common people during the Enlightenment. As people learned to read and write, and as the bible
became more accessible to the commoners, many began to read the bible for themselves. The word
Puritanfirst came as a term for those who advocated more purity in the church. Under siege from
church and crown, it sent an offshoot in the 3rd and 4th decades of the seventeenth century to the
northern english colonies in the New World a migration that laid the foundation for the religious,
intellectual, and social order of New England. (history.com staff Delbanco)... Show more content on

The basic beliefs of Puritans were Unconditional Election, which meant God chose who would
be saved and who wouldn t. A person could not persuade to change God s choice, and being a
member of the Puritan church did not mean you would be saved. Limited Atonement, which
meant that Christ s atonement did not extend to everyone, only those who were chosen to be
saved by him. Only those whom God elected received the salvation benefits of God s salvation.
Irresistible Grace, Puritans believed that once chosen by God s grace, you cannot resist it. Being
chosen meant that a person had found the right path to salvation. Being choses internally meant
that God changed a person s heart. Finally, Perseverance of the Saints, which meant a person
elected by God s grace would never depart from the path of salvation. The person would have
complete power to understand the word of God, and would never turn towards evil. The person
would instead persevere towards salvation. (our everyday life.com) Th beliefs they had were very
strict, and if not followed, there would be cruel

The Negative Effects Of Television And Video Game Violence
On average, an American encounters approximately 200,000 violent acts before the age of
eighteen. However, these exposures do not influence an individual to exhibit violence. Concerns
regarding whether television and video game brutality has a negative effect on the public by
promoting cruelty, dates back to the 1950 s and is still prevalent today. Studies and research
conducted on the issue are unable to prove that the two variables have any correlation to each other.
In fact, statistics demonstrate how the amount of violent crimes has decreased significantly
throughout time, despite the growing video gamepopularity. Lastly, in society, people look for
anything to transfer the blame, especially in regards to a situation that may threaten an individual s
community. As a matter of fact, by reviewing the extensive research the conclusion was drawn
stating, exposure has no effect on barbarity. Therefore, television and video game ferocity does not
have a negative effect on the population.
Studies and research conducted on the issue is irrelevant. Specifically, the studies conducted fail
to assess accurate information essential in the process of proving cause and effect. Not to
mention, previous studies that revealed a link between the two factors only focused on short term
effects and did not take other factors into account. In reality, children get riled up over images
they may see and are likely to act out for a short period of time. However, this does not prove

  • 2. Mental Endurance in Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage Mental Endurance in Alfred Lansing s Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage In Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage, Alfred Lansing recounts the tale of one of the greatest successes of the Twentieth Century. Ironically, Lansing s detailed account of the 1915 Trans Antarctic Expedition illuminates the stark reality that Sir Ernest Shackleton s expedition did not fulfill its goal. In fact, the expedition never even set foot upon the continent that they had intended to cross. The outstanding success of that motley crew of adventurers was in their ability to endure the harsh Antarctic climate. Despite having their ship crushed by an ice cap, spending the dark Antarctic winter hopelessly alone, suffering through a stormy voyage in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to endure, one must get along with himself to prevent the self pity that cripples the human organism, and he must also cooperate with his peers unless he wants to abandon any help he might have received from the resourceful human community around him. There it is then, Shackleton s indefatigable trait, the positive attitude that permits people to explode through obstacles by the means of cooperation of mind, body, and peers. While I am not as experienced in the faculty of endurance as Shackleton was, my trials as a distance runner have bequeathed me with a concrete idea of what endurance is. My debilitating cramps, my slogs through mud pits that were formerly legitimate trails, and my stomach emptying wretches on the side of the sizzling track have enstilled in me the prerequisite for a belief that what I am doing really matters. When I fail to maintain a positive mental attitude, my exhausted legs slow in their powerful dance; they simply refuse to go any faster as the blanket of apathy envelopes me. Although my running horror story pales in comparison to Shackleton s epic of frostbite and starvation, the workout early on a rainy Saturday morning in November required that I suck it up and believe in what I was doing. I had already run three one mile repeats at a ridiculously fast rate of speed over the trail with the biggest hill in site. When Coach asked ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Jean Rhys s Wide Sargasso Sea Essay In Jean Rhys s novel Wide Sargasso Sea, Edward Rochester can be considered as an embodiment of patriarchal and colonial oppression. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, patriarchal means, relating to, characteristic of, or designating a society or culture in which men tend to be in positions of authority and cultural values and norms are seen as favouring men... ( Patriarchal ) moreover colonial means of, belonging to, or relating to a colony... ( Colonial ). In addition, oppression means prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority, control, or power; tyranny; exploitation ( Oppression ). In order to discuss Edward s role in patriarchal and colonial forms of oppression, his marriage, and emotional connection to Antoinette, symbolic representation, and cultural differences will be analysed and discussed, focusing on any evidence of both forms of oppression. Through Edward s marriage to Antoinette, one can see his colonial British background and how this influences his role as an embodiment of patriarchal oppression. For instance, Edward is looking to take the stature of a matured and wealthy, independent male by British standards (Kendrik 235). In order to achieve this Edward needs to present as a dominant and independent husband in possession of a submissive and dependant wife. This leads Edward into never completely accepting Antoinette as an equal as he views her as a prized possession obtained through marriage; her beauty and wealth carrying ... • 4. Chaos in King Lear A device which Shakespeare often utilized to convey the confusion and chaos within the plot of his plays, is the reflection of that confusion and chaos in the natural environment of the setting, along with supernatural anomalies and animal imageries. In King Lear, these devices are used to communicate the plot, which is summarized by Gloucester as: #8230;This villain of mine comes under the prediction: there #8217;s son against father. The King falls from bias of nature: there #8217;s father against child. (Act 1, Sc.1, 115 118) The #8220;bias of nature #8221; is defined as the natural inclination of the world. Sc. 2, 125 133) As a result of the irrational acts of trust by Lear and Gloucester, the state of England crumbled due to corruptness and treachery of Regan, Goneril and Edmund. At the point of ultimate chaos, Lear is disdained by his two evil daughters and has none of the power and honour of his kingship, and the state of nature reflects this chaos in the form of a tumultuous storm: Blow winds and crack you cheeks! Rage, blow! #8230; Crack nature #8217;s molds, all germens spill at once That makes ingrateful man. (Act 3, Sc. 2, 1 11) This is evident that the chaotic state of the plot is reflected by the chaotic state of nature. This storm also enters the play at a point where Lear can be observed as near madness in his mental state. Lear #8217;s unstable emotions causes him to remain in the rain, even as Kent has found a place of shelter: The Body #8217;s delicate. This tempest in my mind Doth my senses take all feeling else Save what beats there. (Act 3, Sc. 4, 15 17) From Lear #8217;s emotions of disgust towards his ungrateful older daughters, comes words of malice depicting his two daughters as conniving animals which have wounded the parent. • 5. Effect Of Change During The Post Independence Period Chieftaincy has continued to experience pressures of change during the post independence period. The introduction of the central government system in Ghana interfered in the institution of chieftaincy and reduced much of the authority and the power of chiefs (Boadi 2001, 20). However, despite these two major changes, chieftaincy is still very important in Ghana. Moreover, those pressures did not affect the religiosity of chieftaincy, which have always served as a hindrance to the involvement of Christians (Safo Kantanka 1993, 53). Christianity in Ghana When European missionaries arrived on the Gold Coast (now Ghana), they deemed certain indigenous practices unholy and contradictory to Christian teachings. Christianity also affected the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Today the notion of traditional practices like ancestor worship contradicting Christianity is central to the discussion of chieftaincy and Christianity. For example in Ghana home movies, traditional indigenous practice like ancestor worship and the pouring of libation is seen as backward and unholy. (Wellings 2006) Christian chiefs face the dilemma of whether to embrace Christianity and forsake all traditional religious practices or denounce Christianity? There are different views regarding whether a Christian can become a chief. The issue of concern regards to the following questions: Is it possible for a Christian to be a chief and still fully be committed to God and follow the teachings and commandments of God? Is it sinful to be a Christian and a Chief? Should the church allow a Christian to become a traditional chief? There are different views regarding the topic of chieftaincy and Christianity. • 7. Analysis Of The Passing Of Grandison And Quentin... Humor. Mockery. Relationship Goals. Can you consider these three things in a story about slavery? Slavery is typically a sensitive and serious topic. In Charles W. Chesnutt s short story, The Passing of Grandison and Quentin Tarantino s film, Django Unchained , these three components were combined for entertainment purposes. In this essay, I will implement the comparison that both the short storyand film shows with the three component of humor, mockery and the relationship goal of a slave. The Passing of Grandison was humorous in many ways. The humor started the Colonel s son, Dick Owens, trying to win a girl s heart by doing something kind by freeing a slave by taking him to Canada. Chesnutt used humor by exposing the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this story, Chesnutt changes the reader s initial perception of the characters, which was humorous. Such as, even though Charity somewhat persuades Dick Owens to proceed in losing his father s slave, she never believe that he would actually succeed. Dick returns home, and Charity Lomax hilariously marries him, as she was mildly impressed her with his act. In the movie, Django Unchained, Taratino humor comes in condemning the importance of slavery, which he makes fun of events and groups of people that existed during the time of slavery. In the movie, there is a white German bounty hunter named Dr. Schultz seeks out a slave named Django and buys him because he needed him to find some men he is looking for. What so hilarious about this was that Dr. Schultz could have used anybody beside a slave that was on the same plantation with the men that Django might have known, he was not even certain that Django knew of these men he was looking for. Also, in the movie, Taratino made the scene with Django changing wardrobe to be a hilarious part of the movie. You can say that Django went from rags to riches, after Django s freedom Dr. Schultz offers to buy him a new suit whatever he wanted. Django selects a blue two piece with lace cravat and knickerbockers, he assumes that s what gentlemen (a free slave) would wear, It was funny seeing Django walk in his new wardrobe because he thought he politically ... Similarities Between Edith Wharton And Booker T Washington Social Realism Social realism was a movement following the civil war where artists and writers would focus and point out the conditions of the middle to lower working class. Unlike Regional realism, social realism draws attention to the social structures and conditions that the majority of the population was currently experiencing. Edith Wharton and Booker T Washington where two important writers who wrote about their own experiences and of others to demonstrate the new social structure changes at this time. The short story The Other Two by Edith Wharton is an excellent representation of gender relation transformations and the nature of marriage at the turn of the century. In the beginning of the story, we are introduced to a woman named Alice, whom has been divorced 2 times and is currently on her 3rd marriage with a man named Mr. Waythorn. Mr. Waythorn is happy with his new wife and is not bothered by the fact that she has already been married twice. Certain situations arise so that Mr. Waythorn bumps into both of Alice s previous husbands. He is uncomfortable meeting them at first however; he begins to have a new understanding of his wife. People of the global community have to be aware of the dangers that are present in the lives of many people all over the globe. Human Rights issues are quite serious and violations of these rights should not be taken lightly. In exploration of a global human rights issue, the discovery of rape as a tool in war was a gross violation of human rights as well as overwhelmingly a gender issue. Rape used as a tool of war has devastated and destroyed people, communities, families, and traditions. When discussing rape as weapon of war, there are two main modern day conflicts that can not be overlooked. Rape as a weapon of war is brought into light by the wars of Congo and Bosnia. These two conflicts brought the eyes of the world onto the global issue of rape in war and more specifically how it is used as a tool of ethnocide and genocide. The recent conflict in the Congo has been rooted in the 1994 Rwandan Genocideand related violence in Burundi which saw hundreds of thousands of Hutus flee both countries into eastern ZaГЇre. (First and Second) In the Rwandan genocide, Hutu power groups (called the Interahamwe and the Impuzamugambi) led mass killings of Tutsis and pro peace Hutus, murdering 800,000 people in approximately 100 days. • 12. High School Reflection Essay Have you ever just felt like high school was too easy? Well I have because I felt like the teachers just passed you on. They didn t give me a challenge like I was supposed to have and from that being, now I have to prepare myself for the college life and teach myself the things I was supposed to be taught in high school. The schoolI came from didn t have a math teacher or a history teacher all year so we just sat in the class rooms and played everyday all day and I still ended up passing and that school was Albany Early College. They told me that I would finish high school with an associate degree but all I got was a discombobulated school and an uncontrolled school. The next school I went to didn t care either. They showed me that I can skip class everyday and still pass with an A average. Despite all the things I didn t get taught in high school, I did learn some unique aspects that I can reflect on and use for college. The skills I reflect on are annotating, using the Cornell note taking system, and how to be on time for school. To begin with, the first aspect I reflect on from high school is annotating. Annotating helped me a lot when I was taking final exams and other test. This is one of the most I reflect on because I can use this skill to help me in college. I first learned how to annotate in the 11th grade when I was at Monroe Comprehensive High School. The way my teacher showed me how to annotate was to number the paragraphs then summarize the paragraphs individually, after doing that it helped me understand the passage better as if it was hard to comprehend. My teacher also told me to underline any sentences that look interesting to me and circle any words that I am not familiar with and go and look them up after I was done. But you don t just annotate and be done, but you have to go back and study what you annotated so you can get a full understanding of whatever you re annotating. Annotating is a big skill that I was taught because I can use it in other subjects other than English such as: History, Science, and other classes, but I can t annotate the same way in every subject. For example: If I annotate math the same way I do in History then my notes would be messed up because I am learning two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Essay Alex Ibarra ENG 150 274 December 12, 2012 The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Living on this earth is a privilege and unfortunately we sometimes take advantage of it. Stories of deforestation, air and water pollution really make a person think of just how much our planet is being harmed. A major concern is water pollution. Water covers at least 70 percent of the planet which makes our rivers, lakes, and oceans essential. Many of these bodies of water are being polluted and although they may be out of sight, they eventually help pollution increase. Actions should be made to stop the pollution of our waters before things get worse. If we want to decrease the amount of pollution it starts out by increasing the amount of recycling we do. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sunlight does eventually play a part as it breaks plastic down into smaller pieces but that can just make it worse. The plastic still never goes away it just becomes microscopic. Of the more than 200 billion pounds of plastic the world produces each year, about 10 percent ends up in the ocean. (Earth Magazine). Most of that plastic eventually sinks, damaging life on the ocean floor. The plastic that floats ends up in gyres, and settle in massive garbage patches that form there, much like the Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Plastic is a very useful material but when in the ocean, it endangers animal life. Small surface debris, mostly plastic resin pellets are a common piece of marine debris. Because they are so small they can easily get lost along the way, washing through the water with other plastics and into the sea. Pollution like this is causing harm to sea animals such as the seabird; the albatross. The albatross scoops its food from the ocean and without knowing picks up trash along the way. Plastic debris along with other garbage is then fed to its young mistakenly for food. Of the 500,000 albatross chicks born here each year, about 200,000 die, mostly from dehydration or starvation. A two year study funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency showed that chicks that died from those causes had twice as much plastic in their stomachs as those that died for other reasons. ... • 15. Essay about Health Care Reform in the United States Health Care Reform Health care has been an area of discussion for some time now. In the United States, the current health care system is a private system that allows individuals to choose their own method of care. Despite the freedom that comes with the independent nature of this type of health care system, the true disposition creates more problems than it solves. The privacy of the health care institutions has caused affordability and access to become serious issues with this system. These facts point out that the system currently at play is rather ineffective and therefore ought to be changed. Money plays a huge role in access, therefore it is a vital issue to discuss. Within the current system, lack of money results in lack of health care, which leaves thousands of people without any health care coverage. Between 2001 and 2005, the number of people paying for health insurance increased 30%, however income only raised 3% (Health Care Problems). Adequate income is a necessity and unfortunately that is not present. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, the average annual premium across the country is $16,000. Currently, the average annual income in the United States is $51,107. Mint Money Management suggests that about 4 6% of one s total income should be spent on insurance, including life, disability, and health insurance. However, the averages in the United States show that the average person spends about 31% of their income on health insurance, which is not financially beneficial. While globalization encompasses many different sectors of daily life, the negative implications of the practice, such as exploitation of workers, damage to the environment of the host country and cultural deterioration outweigh any rewards earned through the process. The entrance of Western corporations into Eastern countries may seem to benefit both the host country and the corporation itself, however this is an unbalanced partnership, with the host country bearing most of the downsides. A prime example of this is the hiring of cheap and unskilled labour to fill positions in factories. Many countries with little to no labour regulations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because of the lack of strong, legal worker s unions in these countries, it becomes much easier to exploit worker s labour in developing countries. In fact, this globalization is also detrimental to workers in developed countries, as more and more factory jobs are outsourced to foreign countries. In what is being described as the outsourcing tidalwave , professionals at the University of California have estimated that nearly 1 in 9 of all American jobs are vulnerable to outsourcing (Hira 1) due to competitive and cheaper labour markets in the East. Due to outsourcing, Western workers are losing jobs to workers who are then forced to work in unsafe, unregulated and poorly paid areas. In both circumstances, neither side gains from the other. In a similar fashion, the environment of the host country undergoes a significant amount of stress due to globalization. A particularly harmful effect is the loss of biodiversity in regions. David Ehrenfeld wrote in his essay of the effects of globalization on the environment that India has probably grown over 30,000 different indigenous varieties or landraces of rice. This situation has, in the last 20 years, changed drastically and it is predicted that in another 20 years, rice diversity will be reduced to 50 varieties, with the top 10 accounting for over three quarters of the sub continent s rice acreage (Ehrenfeld 1). ... Both of these quarterbacks have shown game in and game out that they are among the best to ever play. Anyone that knows the slightest bit about American football will know exactly what someone means when they talk about these two in the Hall of Fame discussion. So what makes these two quarterbacks different? Well, there is not much. Throughout their storied careers, they have had to overcome hardships, which only reiterates the point of their G.O.A.T. From our lab group experiment, the average temperature of the pure t butyl alcohol was 23.1 degrees Celsius and the mixture was 12.0 degrees Celsius. After finding the two temperatures, we subtracted the average temperature of the t butyl alcohol and the freezing point of solution to get 11.1 degrees Celsius. • 38. Motives For Terrorism Essay Terrorism is a type of violence used tactically in peace, conflict, and war. The threat of terrorism is ever present, and an attack is likely to occur when least expected. In trying to find out what factors can cause an individual to choose terrorism, it is first necessary to define what terrorism is. The Department of Defense defines terrorismas the calculated use of violence or threat of violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological. Per the definition, the terrorists are not giving into a whim of random acts, but these individuals are using calculated moves in order to achieve the purpose of the group. Simply... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This type of motivation is found to be a faith of the terrorist. The individual does not consider the actions taken to achieve the agenda wrong and may tend to project antisocial motivations onto others, creating a polarized we versus they outlook.(3) These members attribute only evil motives to anyone outside the group. The resulting clarity of purpose appeals to those who crave violence to relieve their constant anger. The other common characteristic of the psychologically motivated terrorist is the pronounced need to belong to a group. With some terrorists, group acceptance is a stronger motivator than the stated political objectives of the organization. Such individuals define their social status by group acceptance. More often than not the groups goal may be nearly impossible to achieve. A group that achieves its stated purpose is no longer needed; thus, success threatens the psychological well being of its members. When a terrorist group approaches a stated goal, there may be an inclination to redefine it. The group may reject the achievement as false or inadequate or the result of the duplicity of them . When a solution is close to being reached, objectives change. One effective psychological defense against success is to define goals so broadly that they are impossible to achieve. Even if the world proclaims the success of a political movement, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Persuasive Essay On Visit To College No matter what grade you re in, campus visits in any form are beneficial. A camp at the university or college, a campus event, or your usual campus visit are all great ways to experience the place you re considering calling home for your college years. My mom had some great advice in this process for me which was what helped keep my somewhat levelheaded during the college decision process. Don t wait until senior year to do your visits This is a sure way to be incredibly stressed out. Amongst all the efforts to survive the year, don t put yourself in the situation of making a four hour trip one way to visit a campus. It s a huge mistake. My mom got onto me about this. She was excited for me to be preparing for this next adventure in my life, but she and I had to coordinate schedules to make four or five hour drives over the course of a day or a weekend. With two of my visits, we drove down on Saturday, spent the night, did some seeing around town (mostly involving food) on Sunday, and visited the campus on Monday in the morning so we could drive back home on Monday. Make the most of your trip to the campus, especially if it s farther away from home. Find a couple places to check out or make your study home while you re in school. 2. • 41. The Importance Of Life As A Seventh Grader CUSACK AM CONFERENCE ESSAY Last year as a sixth grader, I wasn t as irresponsible as I thought I was looking back on it now. I got most of my homework in on time, I had good grades and I was organised. I had good friends to help me through the hard parts and I like to think that I helped others as well. One of the actions that helped me later in seventh grade was when I had study hall last year. It definitely helped me realize to set aside time for homework. Plus it showed me how to keep homework and school work in separate, prioritized sections in my life. Last year, with the electives that I had, I was able to make friends outside of sixth grade and when I went into seventh grade, I had people who had the same teachers from the year before help me with things I either couldn t understand or needed advice for. Also, in that part of things, I talked to teachers that I didn t have earlier, but later in the school year and I got to know some of them. Which definitely helped me as a seventh grader, by knowing somewhat what to expect if I had them as my teachers. Life as a seventh grader seems pretty easy compared to an adult s everyday life, but in the moment it can be pretty challenging. One of the few challenges that I have faced happened when I went to Ireland for two weeks. I only missed seven total school days and I tried to bring most of my school work with me, but it still wasn t easy when I had missed lessons and tests when I couldn t learn them from nearly five ... Gage s case inspired the development of frontal lobotomy, which now is a psychosurgical procedure that leads to emotional response and personality traits. On the other hand, historical analysis doesn t support this claim because Gage s injury didn t have enough influence on the development of this practice. Gage not only suffered the accident but it had a dramatic impact on his life. There was criticism of Gage s story including the doubts on accuracy between scientific and popular discourse from Australian psychologist Malcolm Macmillan. • 48. New England And Chesapeake Colonies Analysis Starting off as a single colony, the New England colony eventually expanded to form the Middle colonies, Southern colonies, and the Chesapeake colonies. The Chesapeake and New England colonies both stemmed from England, but developed in a way that made them each very unique in the way that they developed. Developing around different intentions, the New England and Chesapeake colonies were unique due to their different economic and social structures. The social interactions that the New England and Chesapeake colonies had between Indians and their own people were very different due to alternate motives. Documents A and H each show the steps taken in order to achieve social unity. It is obvious that the two colonies didn t have the best relationship with the Indians, but both colonies had different approaches when it came to mending relationships. Bacon s Rebellion was a revolt against Governor Berkeley of Virginia in 1676 that started due to Berkeley s resistance of not fighting against the Indians because of the fur trade. This showed that the Chesapeake colony would rather take a better economy as opposed to stable social interactions, Now let us compare these things together and see what sponges have sucked up the public treasure and whether it has not been privately contrived away by unworthy favorites and juggling parasites whose tottering fortunes have been repaired and supported at the public charge (Doc H). Their rise was directly related to the increased knowledge that that came to the common people during the Enlightenment. The word Puritanfirst came as a term for those who advocated more purity in the church. • 50. The Negative Effects Of Television And Video Game Violence On average, an American encounters approximately 200,000 violent acts before the age of eighteen. However, these exposures do not influence an individual to exhibit violence. Concerns regarding whether television and video game brutality has a negative effect on the public by promoting cruelty, dates back to the 1950 s and is still prevalent today. Studies and research conducted on the issue are unable to prove that the two variables have any correlation to each other. In fact, statistics demonstrate how the amount of violent crimes has decreased significantly throughout time, despite the growing video gamepopularity. Lastly, in society, people look for anything to transfer the blame, especially in regards to a situation that may threaten an individual s community. As a matter of fact, by reviewing the extensive research the conclusion was drawn stating, exposure has no effect on barbarity. Therefore, television and video game ferocity does not have a negative effect on the population. Studies and research conducted on the issue is irrelevant. Specifically, the studies conducted fail to assess accurate information essential in the process of proving cause and effect. Not to mention, previous studies that revealed a link between the two factors only focused on short term effects and did not take other factors into account.
