3. Definition:
Rabies is a zoonotic viral disease of mammals which
is caused by Rabies virus ( Family Rhabdovirus,
Genus Lyssavirus ).
• Rabies virus is a Bullet shaped, RNA enveloped virus.
Introduction
4. Transmission:
This disease is transmitted by the Saliva
of infected animals generally known as Rabid animals
( most often by bites).
Transmitter:
Following are the transmitters of Rabies;
• Dogs
• Bats
• Cats
• Carnivores( Skunk ,Racoon ,Fox).
5. Case Study
● Rabies is known from over 4000 years.
● It was reduced in 20th century due to the introduction of
rabies vaccine.
● It is found in most countries but with exception of naturally
protected regions.
● Currently, Belgium, Australia, Netherland and UK are free of
Rabies.
● In Asia, upto 31000 children die annually due to rabies.
● In Indo-Pak, endemic 55000 cases are found in dogs annually.
● First Vaccination was done by Louis Pasteur in 1885.
6. Structure
•Rabies virus is approximately 180nm long and with a cross-
section of 75 nm.
• Rabies virus comprises of 5 different kinds of protein.
• It also contains RNA polymerase and its cofactor for
replication and translation

7. Rabies Viral Genome
● Rabies viral genome consist of 5 genes of
about 12kilobp in total.
● Out of which 4 code for structural protein
and 1 for functional protein.
● Rabies genome is negative sense ssRNA.
9. 3. Acute Neurogical
Phase
It can stay avg 30-90 days.
1cm/day.
Virus enters CNS and
symptoms appear stays
for 2-10 days.
Stages of Rabies in Body
4. Coma
Virus have reached the
brain and is causing
inflammation.
Severe symptoms appear
which are irreversible.
Brain affected completly
leading to death.
5. Death
1. Incubation 2. Prodormal
10. Pathogensis
5.Enters salivary
Glands and other
organs.
2.Virus enters
Peripheral Nervous
System
4.Reaches Brain
causing Inflammation
in Thalammus, Brain
Stem & Spinal cord.
3.Virus ascend from
spinal cord.
1. Virus enters
through bite.
11. Diagnosis
DFA test.
•It is not detected at
early stage.
•DFA
•Saliva Test.
•MRI
•Blood Test.
In Animals
In Humans
13. Treatment
• After the rabid animal bite, consult health care
provider .
• Wash the wound with soap and water.
• Provider will provide Fast-shot vaccine or
Human Rabies Immuno Globulin.
• If the virus is reached to the brain there is no
medication or treatment.
14. Public Awareness & Control
• Make sure pets vaccination is up to date.
• Leave wildlife alone.
• Don’t let your pet roam without supervision.
• If you find a bat in your room, consider it and seek medical
help,
• This is because bat bites are faded and small.
• Get regular vaccination ( Pre-exposure prophylaxis).
• Proper awareness of disease by government health sectors.
15. Conclusions
•Rabies is a deadly viral disease.
• It is eliminated from a number of
countries.
•It caused by warm blooded animals.
• It is caused by RNA enveloped virus.
•It attacks the nervous system of body.
•It is uncurable if reached to the Brain
•Adequate measures should be taken to
Control the spread.
