4. Tag Question
• A structure added at the end
of a statement to turn it to a
question
• Formed by
two words,
a VERB
and
a PRONOUN
5. Rule No. 1
• Verb in tag expression is the
same in tense and number as
the verb in the statement.
Example:
You do not have a pencil,
do you?
6. Rule No. 2
• Note that when the statement
is positive, the question tag
is negative.
Example:
They can speak English, can’t they?
Affirmative Negative
7. Rule No. 3
• When the statement is
negative, the tag question is
positive.
Example:
They do not have books, do they?
Negative positive
8. Rule No. 4
If there is a verbal word and if it is in
the present tense singular number,
use ‘does’ ; if in the plural, use ‘do’
and if in the past tense, use ‘did’ .
9. Rule No. 5
If the subject in the statement is
a noun, make it a pronoun.
E.g.:-1)The sun has set, hasn’t
it?
2) The boy won the prize, didn’t
he?
3)Jenny had not seen them, has
she?
10. Other Tips:
• The tag question ends with a
pronoun.
• A comma separates the tag
question from the statement.
• Question mark is used at the
end.
• Question tag always begins
with a small letter
