Reflection Of The Illinois Symphony Orchestra
The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra Concert on October 14th featured three pieces; The Birds,
Concerto for Violin, Cello, Piano, and Orchestra in C Major, and Symphony No.5. All the pieces were
lovely and were entertaining to listen to. This concert also featured the Hersh Trio, comprised of
Alexander Hersh on the cello, Stefan Hersh on the violin, and Paul Hersh on the piano, which the
orchestra accompanied for one piece.
The first piece played by the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra was The Birds composed by Ottorino
Respighi. Ottorino Respighi is best known for his orchestral tone poems, such as Fountains of Rome.
He based his work, The Birds, off of 16th, 17th, and 18th century style music because he had an
interest in music from these eras as a musicologist. There are five movements; Preludio, La Colomba,
La Gallina, L Usignolo, and Il Cuccu. They are meant to resemble types of birds. For example, La
Colomba means dove, La Gallina means hen. The first movement, Preludio, was light and airy. This
was a good piece to start with because of its playful melody. There was a large ritardando into a new
melody that clearly resembled sounds of a bird. The second theme sounded fluttery because of the
trills. The movement then returned to the first theme and ended on a large chord. The second

In his nationalization theory, people would be deprived of the right to own land, but they could still
retain other rights over the land by permission of the state. Sun Yat sen s revolutionary ideas
extensively influenced formation of the New Army, responsible for the revolution of 1911. Through
his early revolutionary actions and a failed military coup in 1895, Sun Yat sen was exiled for sixteen
years, campaigning and raising monetary aid in Europe, the United States and in Japan. In Japan, Sun
Yat sen joined dissident Chinese groups, a pre cursor to the Tongmenghui, becoming their leader and
gaining a large amount of financial support from Japanese democratic revolutionary, Miyazaki Toten.

Greek Philosopher Xenophanes
Xenophanes was a Greek philosopher before the Socratic era whose conception of God was different
from other philosophers of his time. Before the evolution of God as a non human entity the ancient
Greeks believed that Gods and Goddesses were similar to that of humans and the only distinction was
that Gods were immortal and humans were mortal. He challenged openly the concept of divinity
proposed by Homer and put forward his ideas of God through his poetic approach. He noticed the
corrupt behavior of humans and realized that if human are going to worship any being it must be
worthy of such an honor. He argued that ancient Greek Gods of Olympia had experienced downfall
similar to humans and thus are not worthy of being worshipped.
Xenophanes declared the idea of unity of God. This notion was very unusual for Greek culture and
society. He suggested that different poets and writers have induced the idea of multiple Gods in the
minds of Greeks. But the character of these Gods was against the very idea of a divine entity.
Xenophanes attacked the Greek mythology of his time by defining the unexplained deepness of nature
of divinity. He declined to accept the idea that Gods were just like human, they were born, required

Temple Grandin: A Story of Perservearence Temple Grandin and Invictus are excellent films in their
own right. Both share themes of sacrifice, courage, and acceptance. The storytelling in each is very

In 1929, the Western industrialized countries succumbed to a bleak period of time known as the Great
Depression. This economic collapse, which persisted for ten long years, was preempted by the stock
market crash on Wall Street, buying on credit, supply and demand along with the Dust Bowl of the
Great Plains. During this economic state of crisis, the unemployment rate had risen from 3% to 25%,
almost 13 million Americans were jobless. Many people could not pay their rent or mortgages. People
were evicted into the world of public assistance and forced to wait in long breadlines for free food.
Suicide reached an all time high. No nation could emerge from the cauldron of national crisis without
