Research is defined as a careful, systematic
study in a field of knowledge that is undertaken
to discover or establish facts or principles
(Webster, 1984).
It is also defined as a systematic process of
collecting and analyzing data to find an answer
to a question or a solution to a problem to
validate or test an existing theory.
Scientific Attitudes
An attitude can be defined as a way of regarding things; it can also be
considered as a feeling or pattern of thoughts.
The scientific attitude on the other hand can be defined as a way of
looking into things that are governed by facts which are known as well as
demonstrative.
A scientific attitude is an important aspect of a personality of
someone who wants to be successful in the field of science. A scientist
believes that everything that happens in this world has a cause or
reason.
Scientific Attitudes
Curiosity is an attitude to be curious
about the different things around. A
curios individual wants to know about
what is a particular thing all about,
what is it for, how it is done, how it
works and other else. He or she seeks
for the answers of the things that he
or she want to understand.
CURIOSITY
Intellectual honesty is an attitude where one
should be truthful by for example acknowledging
the sources of information. It is an applied
problem-solving method characterized by an
unbiased and honest attitude.
Intellectual Honesty
Open-mindedness is an attitude in which an
individual does not reject any knowledge that
conflict with his or her idea. His or her mind
is free from any prejudice and is not biased.
Here, an individual might accepts ideas from
other person and consider these ideas as
potentials than can help in doing any work or
in solving scientific problems.
Open-mindedness
Skepticism
Skepticism is being unwilling to
accept information as true without
confirming evidence.
Skepticism is where a scientist
doubts, questions, and reconsiders
conclusions.
It is an attitude of an individual that is
willing to evaluate any evidence that is
presented to support a certain
conclusion.
Acquiring information on an issue and
carefully, objectively, and thoroughly,
evaluating information before making a
decision or coming to a conclusion.
Critical Thinking
Objectivity is where a scientist is
objective unless he allows his feelings and
biases to influence his recording of
observations, interpretation of data, and
formulation of conclusions.
It is where judgment based on observable
phenomena and not influenced by
emotions.
Objectivity
Perseverance
Perseverance is not going to
give up.
It is a continued effort to do or
achieve something despite
difficulties, failure or opposition.
What Scientific
Attitude is being
shown in the
following situations?
Situation 1:
While playing by the river
bank, Narda saw some big
crabs crawling on the sand.
She wondered where they
come from, so she went
further down the bank to
investigate their source?
Situation 2:
Marjorie is an online seller of not-so-
known whitening products and
vitamins. She posted it online to attract
buyers. She posted the products and
the caption tells that it is really effective
in whitening skin and the vitamins are
very effective to achieve a glowing and
fair skin.
Continuation..
There are 2 customer that seems
interested.
Buyer 1 send her a message that says “Miss
Marjorie, this is my first time to buy those
products and I’m really desperate to achieve a
glowing and white skin. Let me order 3 boxes of
your whitening products and 3 bottles of
vitamins”.
Without any questions she bought the products.
Continuation..
Buyer 2 commented on her post saying “ I’m
interested in your product but can I first saw
the result? Can you please send some
pictures of before and after of those
customers who tried this. I want to read the
reviews, and please send the chemical
components of your products”.
Situation 3:
The group of Marian is doing an
experiment, before they start
performing the experiment, Marian
asked her groupmates that it is better if
they will discuss first the things that
they need to do before they can
continue so that everything will go
smoothly.
Continuation..
Marian and Johnny are assigned to
be the leaders of the team. One of
their groupmate raised her hand to
suggest something for the
experiment. Johnny accepted it and
he listed it on his notes. However,
Marian disregarded her opinion and
told her that it will be just a waste
of time.
Continuation..
Johnny listens to and respects
the ideas of others. He accepts
criticism and changes his mind if
reliable evidence contradicts his
beliefs while Marian is the
opposite one, what she only
accepts is her opinion.

Editor's Notes

  1. An attitude can be defined as a way of regarding things; it can also be considered as a feeling or pattern of thoughts. The scientific attitude on the other hand can be defined as a way of looking into things that are governed by facts which are known as well as demonstrative. A scientific attitude is an important aspect of a personality of someone who wants to be successful in the field of science. A scientist believes that everything. that happens in this world has. a cause or reason.
  2. It is the attitude where the scientist listens to and respect the ideas of others. He accepts criticism and changes his mind if reliable evidence contradicts his beliefs.
  3. Between the 2 buyers who has the attitude of being skeptical? And why? The buyer two has the questioning attitude. She don’t believes easily without any proof. As researcher, you must be skeptical like the buyer 2.
  4. What scientific attitude is being shown? In this situation, who do you think is more open-minded.
