F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Barn
Sadly, Ruth all but knows that she stays because Paul is white. She is still so ashamed of the event that
she wants to cleanse her blackness and dirtiness with Paul s whiteness and cleanliness. The binary
oppositions that have been passed on from white American culture to black American culture have
claimed another victim and Ruth is left to deal with her emotional scarring alone. Paul s touch would
never release her...whenever he touched her, she became blacker and dirtier than ever...[but] her
blackness was not Paul s fault. Neither was her guilt. She was punishing herself for something, a
crime she could not remember. You dirty...you black and dirty... (Baldwin). She wants very much to be
content with being a black woman in America, who has no reason to feel shame for being sexual, but
the event in the barn weighs heavily on her at all times. She is so desperate to be cleansed by way of
Paul s whiteness that she will not leave a toxic, unfulfilling, nearly one sided relationship. Instead, she
goes to work every day and seethes, thinking about what conquest he might acquire in her absence.
Ruth s issues with her race and sexuality also come to the fore in the office, as she shares her coffee
breaks with her female coworkers. While all the other office girls are whispering and conspiring over
the marvelous Mr. Davis, their black superior, Ruth is contemplating her mixed race relationship and
the unlikelihood that Mr. Davis would take up a gossipy office girl. Ruth, though

Taurus Case Study
Company Background
Christopher Columbus was probably the first European to handle rubber. Rubber has been used by the
Haitian for centuries. In 1819 Thomas Hancock discovered that latex rubber can be masticated, but
unfortunately mastication deprived rubber of its elastic qualities.
Charles Goodyear has discovered vulcanization in 1839, which solved the problem and also kept
rubber products from becoming tacky. Hence the commercial uses of rubber multiplied greatly.
Shortly thereafter, the rise of the automobile industry at the century s turn resulted in a tremendous
increase in the demand for rubber and its principal application in the manufacture of automobile and
truck tires. The production of natural rubber entails ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, we come out with the problem statement mention about how the company restructuring
the business line and revitalize growth.
Thus, SWOT analysis was being used to identify the strength, weaknesses, opportunity, and threats of
the company s operation. By using this analysis, we get to identify how the company s operation runs
and what strategies would be the best to be suggested in the alternatives. The strength for Taurus is
well established background, reputation for quality, strong division and strategic internal development.
The weakness is inefficiencies productivity, weak competitive position and not incorporated division.
The threat and opportunity is from the external environment. The opportunity is highly attractive
market, awareness of joint venture and merging, high demand of rubbers and tires, opportunity to
privatise and the competitiveness of Hungary s exports. Lastly, the threat is high threat of new
entrants, maturity of tires, occurrence of new private law and crisis in Hungarian industry.
Based on the problem statement and the SWOT analysis we suggest four alternatives. First alternative
is strategic alliances by creating new strategic business units (SBUs). They can joint the automobile
industries, truck and bus industries and construction and building industries. They can privatize when
government set the law. This is a threat and

Analyzing The Film Story Of The Ark In PEI
In a world that is focused on consumption, living sustainably means living against the grain. Our final
lecture reflection studied different lifestyles that oppose traditional norms and embrace sustainability.
Minimalism is a documentary on people who defy the idea that possessions bring happiness and
choose to live with as little as possible. Toke Miller emphasises the importance of changing our ways,
to see the world with kindness, love, and consciousness. Finally, Steve Mannell shares the story of the
Ark in PEI which promotes a self sufficient alternative to modern housing. By examining and
changing the ways that we live our lives we can approach a way to live sustainably. Minimalism, a
documentary directed by Matt D Avella, explores ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Combining his two disciplines, Steve explains the PEI Ark. The Ark was built in the 1970 s and
strived to change the way people thought about and interacted with technology and the environment. It
is a greenhouse home which re invents modern housing norms. Committed to living lightly on the
earth, the Arc is self sufficient as it is designed to harvest and conserve energy through the use of solar
and wind power. The house desires not have have segregated systems of production, but many systems
which all work together. The greenhouse allows residents to simply go and harvest foods instead of
having to refrigerate and buy foods. Residents are able to grow foods all year long due to the heat
conserving design which can store heat for up to six months that warms the house and allows food to
grow. The house also avoids using pesticides through integrated pest management! Plant clippings
were thrown into an algae tank which feeds fish that are then sold or eaten. The algae tank also helped
with heating the house, as algae is really good at absorbing and radiating heat. The Ark also had other
features such as a barn and self composting toilets and in total cost only $350 000 in 1975 which
converts to $130 per square foot today (Mannell, S., 2017, March, 30)! I found this lecture to be very
interesting, as I always worry about how my living situation impacts my level of sustainability. In my
home we have two fridges and a large freezer and they use up too much energy. My family could learn
more on how to live lightly on the earth from the Arc, which allows residents to make dinner from the
food in their greenhouse and the fish in their pond, and their food waste can be thrown into their self
composting toilets. If we learned to grow some of our own food, and to store less in our fridges, we
could waste less energy! This reminds of Ruth Forsdyke s lecture where she spoke about the

My Visit At The Huntington Museum Of Art
The first thing I noticed at the Huntington Museum of Art was how quiet and empty it was. This was
not displeasing however quite the opposite in fact. The atmosphere was perfect for contemplation and
thought, which is exactly what I want in a museum. I was still surprised of course; my visit to the Art
Institute of Chicago had been very different. Unlike in Huntington, Chicago s museum was packed to
the brim, and the people within it practically shouting just to be heard. It is very easy to decide which
one I liked more, in terms of surroundings anyway. As I walked along, my footsteps echoing, I could
not help but feel like there was something missing. The art was perfectly fine, but there was a lack of
liveliness to the place, something that Chicago had in spades. I remember noticing that the art only
had names, and no descriptions. This was something I disliked extremely. It is nice to look at images I
suppose, but I want some history. I want the time period, and a description of the artist, two things that
play a huge role in what a painting is actually about. I felt like I should just naturally understand what
each piece of art was trying to describe to me, which was an irritating feeling.
It only took me about twenty minutes to go through the entire museum. Nothing really drew me in,
except for a couple of pieces. This was entirely different from my visit to the Art Institute of Chicago.
There, almost everything drew me in. All the paintings, and especially some of

The Physics Of Pinball Machines
Pinball machines clearly demonstrate scientific principles that can teach us not only about machines,
but also of the laws of physics, electricity, and applying basic materials. Most Simple machines
consist of inclined planes, levers, screws, pulleys, wedges, and wheels with axels. Most common
materials used in making a pinball machine include, but are not limited to: metal, plastic, wood,
rubber, and steel.
Players use the only tool provided, the Flipper. Below the playfield, the linkage moving the flipper
uses the lever while the mechanics behind the flipper button switch also rely on the lever. Inclined
planes create ramps, while wedges drive the ball away from pop bumpers. Wheels with axels run
every motor in a machine and help rotating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pins adapted from the Ninteenth to the Twentieth centuries, to electrical wiring and switches to power
devices and light scores in darkened bars and pool halls.
Eventually mercury switches gave way to leaf switches, and then on to electronic optical switches. In
the Twenty First century Stern Pinball installed MP3 files of recordings from popular movies that
coincide with the game theme, and you can even download updates to the software, or reprogram the
machine to create new modes and sequences. Opto switches use laser technology and Jersey Jacks has
been putting full color LCD screens into his Wizard of Oz machines.
Moving on to how the lights and sounds effect us as a people, I believe that the flashing lights and
loud noises emitted from a pinball machine just appeal to our curious and excitable nature. Nothing
can capture my sons attention faster than the Star Wars pinball machine at the local laundromat, even
more so than the racing arcade games and the vending machines right next to it. The reason for this, in
my opinion, first off is the noise, he hears the dings and whizzes, and sound bites from the beloved
movie, recognizes the familiar faces of Luke Skywalker, Yoda, and Chewie on the board, an
immediatly, he has to play it. I dont think just a stationary poster would have his attention so fast or so
tight, he may offer a glance, may even offer a comment like look momma, Yoda , but when he hears
the noises, see s the lights, he recognizes right away that this is fun, and he must partake in

Russell On Truth
Bertrand Russell discussed certain problems he found with philosophy. Russell was concerned about
how much did we really know. There is the stuff we know with our mind when we have a particular
idea, and stuff we know through actually experiencing it which would justify it. But how do we know
if it is real, or even there, for that matter? Russell says, For if we cannot be sure of the independent
existence of object, we cannot be sure of the independent existence of other people s bodies, and
therefore still less of other peoples minds, since we have no grounds for believing in their minds
except such as are derived from observing their bodies (Russell, 47). How can Farmer Brown be sure
that the dairyman just didn t have an idea ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This brings us to knowledge of things. Russell believed that all of our knowledge, both knowledge of
things and knowledge of truths, rest upon acquaintance as its foundation. It is therefore important to
consider what kinds of things there are which we have acquaintance (Russell, 57). You know stuff
through acquaintance by directly experiencing it and you know stuff through description from hearing
what other have told you from there direct experiences. William James on the other hand would have
had different views than Russell in some aspects. James believed that you needed more than just an
idea to make something true, it needed power. James believes that truth is dynamic rather than static.
James feels truth happens when everything holds together, when what you believe actually fits in with
other things you also believe. While at the same time, James believed something is false when it doesn
t fit in with the systems of your beliefs. James said, The most violent revolutions in an individual s
beliefs leave most of his old order standing. Time and space, cause and effect, nature and history, and
one s biography remain untouched. New truth is always a go between, a smoother over of transitions.
It marries old opinion to new fact so as ever to show a minimum of jolt, a maximum of continuity
(James, 124). Truth is a web where each belief contributes to support our other beliefs. James would
have reacted

The Discovery And Consumption Of Coffee Essay
Imagine waking up Saturday morning. It s a chilly day while the sun is barely rising and you re tug in
your bed in your favorite pajamas. You smell the aroma of coffee beans been prepared into your
favorite coffee drink, Mocha, Frappuccino, Latte, Espresso, you name it, while you read a book or
admire the person you re with. Well, that small or large cup of coffee contains a great amount of
history that you have never wondered or asked yourself like many of us. Most of us drink coffee for
many reason, but not many know the history behind the discovery of coffee. It might not be in the
interest of many, but having some knowledge of how coffee evolved in today s society will give you a
greater view of its early discovery and consumption. I drink coffee at least every morning to wake me
up, but after reading, The world in Six Glasses , I learned more about the history and meaning behind
coffee in the early years. Coffee is not just a typical drink it has a long history behind it and it shapes
our culture in society. Throughout my speech, you ll learn about the growth of coffee, how it was
traded to America, and how coffee is view today in our culture.
Let s begin by where coffee was originated and how its growth was discovered. It all starts with a tale
written by Standage ...of an Ethiopian goatherd who noticed that his flock became particularly frisky

Kite Surfing Research Paper
Kite surfing is the latest in extreme sports that has become a huge phenomenon all over the world and
is certainly not for the fainthearted. The surfer will be propelled on the surface of the water by the
wind that is powering the kite. This extreme sport can be difficult to master; however, it continues to
grow in popularity. The concept of using a kite to enhance the overall speed of the surfer is
exhilarating, and although is considered to be new, people have been kite surfing for centuries.
Throughout China in the 13th century a similar style of transportation was used to enable people to
guide their canoes. The Chinese used the power of the wind and harnessed its momentum to kite

There are three main styles of kite that are available when looking to participate in kite surfing. These
are the inflatable kites, framed kites and the air foil kite. Each style has different benefits and
capabilities for the user. The kites are controlled from a single bar which is connected to either the two

need to practice often to master even the simplest of maneuvers. However, once mastered this sport is
incredibly thrilling and will ensure that you receive the ultimate adrenaline rush. People underestimate
the power and strength of the wind and the force that the kite is propelled. The equipment for kite
surfing is very expensive, and you need to consider if this is the sport for you before spending vast

Gifted Education Plan Analysis
I believe that an affective education plan should be systematic where gifted education is integrated
with school wide initiatives and programs throughout all the grade levels, K 12. Opportunities for
gifted students should be incorporated and made available into the regular school day and the school
year. Gifted education should be the responsibility and a collaboration between all staff members
working together in meeting the need of the students. An affective program should be sustainable. It
should be an integral part of the school district s staff and funding plans. The program should not

The Positive Effects Of Agriculture During The Industrial...
The Industrial Revolution, relating to agriculture, was positive for the world in numerous ways, which
led to a more sustainable way to produce food for the demands of the growing population. These
agricultural developments have had many positive effects on the population in Britain during the 18th
century, especially in the areas of economy and society. Famous inventors, such as Turnip Townshed,
were thought upon as the people who single handedly revolutionised English agriculture, during the
industrial revolution. New inventions, crop rotations, and livestock utilisation made way for enhanced
crop yields, greater food diversity and the ability to support livestock. These positive agricultural

More free time was available as fewer jobs were available on farms so people were forced into the city

food to be produced at mass production. Also, higher yields such as wheat and barley replaced the
lower yields such as rye, which increased the cereal production because of the clover, which
replenished nitrogen back into the soil. Lower cost of food was due to four aspects, which allowed
British agriculture to develop quicker than any other revolution, these were the increase farmland

Psychodynamic Theorists
Selective Mutism in Adolescents As the makeup of students in classrooms change and general
education teachers are educating a range of students with diverse needs, new learning barriers are
becoming prominent in American classrooms. One of these learning disabilities that is emerging is a
language disorder called selective mutism. Selective mutism is defined as a language disorder in
which individuals who exhibit normal language skills with no delays in daily home situations are
unwilling or unable to speak when confronted with novel situations or people. This disorder, when
presented in classrooms, can affect both the social and the academic progress of the student. When

Psychodynamic theorists believe that selective mutism is a choice made by the child to have power
over a certain part of their life. This could be a way for the child to assert control in response to a fight
with a parent. These theorists believe that children with selective mutism chose not to speak in public
to maintain their power, despite having the ability to speak. Researches emphasize the idea that
children often continue this relationship with new individuals who can remove this power, such as a
new teacher. Differing from psychodynamic theorists, behaviorists believe that children have been
taught to use silence to help control the anxiety that they might feel. For example, if a child is
uncomfortable in a certain situation, chooses not to speak, and has reduced anxiety, they have learned
that silence is an effective tool (Busse Downey, 2011). . Selective mutism was first diagnosed by
Adolf Kussmaul in the 1800s. The named it aphasia voluntaria to emphasize the idea that individuals
made a voluntary decision to maintain silence (Busse Downey, 2011). In time, this original name
became elective mutism . This new name reflected that the individual chose the environment in which
they would speak. Once again, the name of the disorder was changed to become selective mutism .
The current name of the disorder shows that the individual s ability to speak is not about choice, but

Public Service Personal Statement
Growing up, my parents instilled the value of service in me. For this reason, I pursued a degree in
Education in order to serve my community with the best skillset. However, it was until serving as an
AmeriCorps member that I developed a more critical lens to what public service means. Before my
term of service, I thought serving was just a matter of showing up and completing a task. While this is
partially true, I learned that in order to maximize change, it is important to involve who we are
serving. At times, we focus more on quantity rather than quality and end up doing a disservice to
communities who need the most help. I want to serve with The Peace Corps to facilitate change and to
empower communities through education.
My summer abroad in Guatemala, showed me the challenges and implications that come with teaching

Pros and cons
The United Kingdom will not join the single European currency with the first wave of countries on 1
January 1999. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, said in October that, although the
government supported the principle of the single currency, Britain would not be ready to join at least
until the second wave of countries join in 2002. He added that the UK should, however, begin to
prepare for monetary union.
There are many possible advantages and disadvantages that the government had to consider:
Advantages:
1. A single currency should end currency instability in the participating countries (by irrevocably
fixing exchange rates) and reduce it outside them. Because the Euro would have the enhanced
credibility of being used in a large currency zone, it would be more stable against speculation than
individual currencies are now. An end to internal currency instability and a reduction of external
currency instability would enable exporters to project future markets with greater certainty. This will
unleash a greater potential for growth.
2. Consumers would not have to change money when travelling and would encounter less red tape
when transferring large sums of money across borders. It was estimated that a traveller visiting all
twelve member states of the (then) EC would lose 40% of the value of his money in transaction
charges alone. Once in a

Sushi And Hibachi, Roseville, Minnesota
Osaka Sushi and Hibachi, Roseville, Minnesota, 5PM. Feeling a bit nauseous, nervous, walking up to
the entrance of the restaurant, mother and grandmother a few steps in front of me. Today was the day,
I waited three months for, the day in which I get to try Japanese cuisine. What should be expected?
What if it tastes less than desirable? Will my etiquette be correct? I prepared and researched several
hours in advance regarding this. Once inside the restaurant, following closely, the three of us were
seated at an interesting table; like none of other restaurants in the area. A large, open, flat topped stove
stands in the center, behind it, a chef stands, smiling as we sit down and open the thick menu of food
items. Scanning the chef, noting his tall white hat, his crisply clean white apron, black uniform,
posture, it s not difficult to tell that he had been an employee for a significant amount of time.
Flipping through the menu, it was apparent the variety of sushi, sashimi and nigiri was overwhelming.
Luckily enough, my mother and grandmother came into this with a plan. Initially we ordered our
drinks, personally I ordered a Japanese soda, and when it was brought to the table I was surprised by
the appearance of the bottle alone. A rather curved glass overall, the bottom portion was similar to that
of other bottles of soda made from glass, but your eye drew upward. The similarity to the shape of the

If you re looking to install a new fence, it s important to weigh the pros and cons of each type of
fencing material. Each type of fencing offers unique benefits to homeowners. Two of the most popular
types of fencing materials are metal, which includes aluminum, wrought iron, and steel, and different
types of wood. The metal fencing experts at Creative Iron Arts, located in Oakland, CA, explain the
benefits of choosing a metal fence. Consider these three compelling benefits to choosing metal

The Importance Of Social Cohesion
Australia flourishes in an environment of a variety of cultures. We pertain to the ideas of acceptance
and understanding of individuals that have the intention to become apart of team Australia. But what
do we know Australia as? A community of equal citizens Abbott declares (The Conversation, 2014).
We can all assume that we as individuals idealise a country of equity and equality in all aspects of life,
whether it be race, gender, beliefs or political views. In a world where we want fairness and equality,
we coin the concept of social and cultural cohesion, which can be defined as the ties that hold people
together (Humanrights.gov.au, 2017). Moreover, social cohesion is regarded as a shared vision, and is
a process rather than an outcome (Scanlonfoundation.org.au, 2017). Jenson hypothesised a framework
that identifies the importances of social cohesion between individuals. He states that the disruption of
social cohesion effects dimensions of belonging, legitimacy, recognition, participation and inclusion
(Study.com, 2017). In contrast to this we come across an unwanted prejudice and discrimination
towards certain aspects of life. We define this as cultural conflict, the conflict that occurs when
different cultural values and beliefs clash with opposing values and beliefs (LeBaron, 2003). In
regards to Jenson s framework of social cohesion, cultural conflict revolves around the five
dimension. With disruption to this, views are altered into a more negative outlook,

How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life
How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life
Adopted as the latest craze, mindfulness is more than just a passing fad. This meditation technique
stretches back thousands of years in Eastern cultures. While it was once a technique used primarily by
Buddhist monks, modern researchers have discovered some of the immense benefits of being mindful
in every day life.
How Mindfulness Works
At its heart, mindfulness is just a way to pay closer attention to everything that is going on. It focuses
on rooting yourself in the present to notice what is really happening within your mind and body. You
begin to notice the things that are going on around you without judging what is going on. The flowers
grow, your boss gives you a new project and cars drive by just because that is what they do. With this
mind set, you stop judging and are able to just exist within the moment. Instead of allowing yourself
to go into autopilot, you are able to observe your life at a distance.

In 2011, Harvard University conducted a study. In the trial, the participants had to carry out a
mindfulness program for eight weeks. During this time, the density of the gray matter in their minds
actually increased. In total, there were eight different regions of the mind that were affected.
With a mindfulness practice, the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is improved, which allows for
greater self regulation, less impulsiveness and better focus. The gray matter in the hippocampus
increases. Since the hippocampus is responsible for emotion, memories, the limbic system and
cortisol, changes in this section of the brain can reduce post traumatic stress disorder, depression and
chronic stress. Interestingly, individuals with low gray matter in the hippocampus are more likely to
have PTSD or depression. Due to this, mindfulness can actually reduce the impact or treat these

The Fundamental Principle Of Inclusive Schooling
Meeting children s needs is a vital aspect of teaching whereby the needs of all children must be taken
into consideration. Teacher s professional practice is developed over time in various ways, for
example through experience and reflection (Tack et al, 2014). My professional practice was informed
by Meeting Children s Needs module as it educated me on how to assist children to become successful
learners. This can be achieved through various strategies that meet the diverse needs of every child.
The National Curriculum (National Curriculum, 2000) has at times been ambiguous on the matter of
inclusion as it is a contentious term. A prominent philosophy within education was that children had to
adapt themselves to classroom learning in order ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence it is important that schools embrace diversity to ensure effective learning of all takes place.
Each child is special and as a practitioner working with children I have to be aware of all issues
surrounding children s lives as outside factors affect learning. This essay will focus on the case studies
of Charlotte and Pinkesh to illustrate how these case studies educated me on how to deal with children
in similar situations and how my professional practice has been developed. These concepts of meeting
children s needs prepared me for my SEL experience in many ways. Firstly, it allowed me to
understand the importance of inclusion and how this was crucial to effective learning. One pupil I
profiled was Jake; not given a SEN statement, however the teacher ensured she differentiated, in turn
enhancing his learning. Jake was very capable but he had behavioural issues and suffered from low
self esteem: very shy and liked working on his own. After his work was completed he would act out.
This behaviour was similar to the case study of Charlotte as her behaviour deteriorated for attention.
Charlotte just like Jake had low self esteem; these children need to be given challenging work so they
can reach their full potential. Maslow points to the importance of self esteem and as a need by all to
feel valued (Maslow, 1954, p.91). Banks has argued that having good

General Accepted Principles
Generally Accepted Accounting Principles HCS/571 Generally accepted accounting principles, better
known as (GAAP) discloses statements and reports financial information dealing with businesses and
organizations. They are rules made by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) in which are
commonly used in the health industry to maintain the decisions of the organization. GAAP gives
detailed information to investors about the budget of the organization and their debt. GAAP includes
the most common principles used in the health care setting. They are; the entity concept, going

Accountants are able to determine the accrual accounting by focusing on the matching principle
(Finkler, Kovner, and Jones, 2007). With the matching principle organizations and businesses are able
to record expenses and revenues that were accumulated in the same year to match. Accrual accounting
is necessary because it gives a better explanation of expenses accrued annually. Cost principle The
cost principle is anything the business or organization purchases to get. For instance hospitals need
equipment. After buying brand new equipment over the years it will depreciate in value. The reported
value will be known as a net book value because of the change in cost over time (Finkler, Kovner, and
amp;, 2007). Objective evidence Due to mishaps with the cost principle and inconsistency of the
balance sheet, objective evidence is used. Objective evidence is providing proof objectively of
financially statements and expenses by different groups of individuals that are expected to agree
(Finkler, Kovner, amp; Jones, 2007). If a patient leaves the hospital with a device or surgery, knowing
how much in value the organization spent on the patient assets can help determine the precise amount
spent to receive it. Materiality Materiality relates to errors or discrepancies within the financial
information. Having a hospital to partner with another hospital and ask for help financial can affect the
partnership if the financial information is unclear

How Did New York Influence Early American History
From the moment of its first colonization by Peter Stuyvesant as New Netherlands, New York State
showed military promise to both the British and the French. Colonial New York extended from the
Atlantic at New York Harbor all the way north, to the great lakes on the border of the French colonies
of Quebec and Ontario, which made up the combined colony of Canada. Its great size places it
perfectly in between the Southern States and New England. Therefore, whoever controlled New York
controlled the fate of both regions of the original 13 states. New York is utilized for its geographical

Carillon, more commonly known as Fort Ticonderoga, was the most important one. Fort Ticonderoga,
located on Lake Champlain and near Lake George, provided defense against northern access to the
Hudson River, and ultimately New York Harbor. Major General James Abercromby commanded the
assault on Fort Ticonderoga in the July of 1758. Fort Ticonderoga was defended by the Marquis de

fifteen thousand British troops (Gilchrist). They were initially unable to overcome a French abattis,
which is a field fortification used as an obstacle made of tree branches laid in a row with the
sharpened tops pointed towards the enemy. This along with trenches, greatly hindered the British and
after six failed attempts, they retreated. This was not the last of the British as they tried again in 1759
under the command of Sir Jeffery Amherst. This attack, after learning from the previous one, was
successful as French forces, without knowledge of the attack, migrated to defend Quebec against the
rest of the British campaign. By the time the French realized what was going on, it was too late and

Persuasive Essay About Smoking
During one s lifetime they will make over a thousand mistakes that they will regret. One of those
thousand mistakes they will regret will be smoking tobacco and tobacco products. Many people are
going to regret smoking for multiple and various reasons that I am going to discuss in this essay. The
reason I chose smoking as my Rhetoric topic is because the addiction people have to it. Also, another
reason is because of the effects it has on people around it. The last reason why I chose smoking is
because of Second hand smoke. Second hand smoke is when the person next to an individual is
inhaling all the smoke from a person who is smoking. Second hand smoke as an adult increases your
chance of getting Pharynx, the throat, Larynx, is the reason people have voice boxes. Getting Pharynx
is an oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer caused by using tobacco mainly by pipes or cigars. Pharynx
symptoms are usually changes in your voice, major weight loss, a unusual cough and difficulty
swallowing, according to cancer.org. If you have Pharynx cancer you will need multiple radiology
sessions to have it removed and that is not to have it removed completely. Larynx on the other hand
has sort of the same symptoms as Pharynx but, also have a lump in your neck and or usually a
earache. Second hand smoking for children increases their risk of Leukemia, Liver cancer, and
Lymphoma. Leukemia is a form of cancer that starts in your stem cells of the bone marrow, which
makes blood cells. Leukemia is also a common cancer between children and teens. For most children
and teens Leukemias symptoms contain fever, weakness, weight loss, and easy bleeding or bruising.
The average cost of Leukemia treatments are about $46,000 to $47,000 and that is not including the
diagnosis cost. The treatments to battle Leukemia vary on about your age and health, the most
common treatment is Chemotherapy, which is the goal to stop or slow the growth of cancer.
Chemotherapy damages the cancer cells inside your body but, also at the same time it damages your
white and red blood cells, and the Platelets. Your Red blood cells carry the oxygen throughout your
body, the White blood cells help fight the body from infections, and the Platelets are the pieces

Similarities Between Han China And Rome
In the first few centuries C.E., two of the largest empires ever in the world collapsed within 100 years
of each other, and in many of the same ways. Although both Rome and Han China both differed in that
Han China experienced natural disasters, while Rome did not, ultimately they are more similar
because their militaries played a large part in their downfall, both empires had problems defending
themselves, and both were ravaged by disease and food shortages.
The downfalls of Ancient Rome and Han China differed in that in Han China, the rapid population
growth in earlier Han times gradually resulted in the deforestation of large areas of land. Without trees

Testing Reaction Times of Local and Global Perception Essay
Global and Local Processing in Visual Perception
Abstract
This study examined visual perception and the rates at which global and local features are reacted to
with an aim of replicating and validating a previous experiment conducted by Navon (1977) to see if
global processing was faster than local processing. There was 222 University of Newcastle students
participating in the experiment, partaking in two phases, one centred round global processing, the
other around local processing, where there reaction times were recorded using a computer program
and imputed into a data worksheet. Results indicated that, as predicted, global processing occurred at a

It was therefore hypothesised that the reaction times for global judgments would be faster than the
reaction times of local judgments. It was also hypothesised that consistent stimuli would be faster than

Method
Participants
The sample for this study consisted of 222 participants who were second year psychology students
from the University of Newcastle. All students were participating as part of a course requirement and
all had given their consent to participating in the study.
Design
The independent variables consisted of 3 consistency types (contingent, neutral and conflicting
displays). The dependant variable was the reaction time of participants.
Apparatus
A computerised program SuperLab Pro and a keyboard was required in order to record reaction times.
Stimuli
In the first phase of this study that was based around recognising global features, the letters used were
large H s or S s. In the second phase, global letters of H, S and O were used and were made up of
smaller H s or S s, the local characters. These make up the 3 stimulus types: congruent, neutral and
conflicting. The large and small letters could be combined to create 3 types of displays: 1) Consistent,
where the large and small letters were the same (H printed from small H s, or S made of small S s). 2)
Conflicting (H made of small S s, S made of small H s), and 3) Neutral (H made of O s, S made of

provoking text, organized in a number listed format and then each number presents a myth with
following bullet points of reasoning underneath. There were a few described Myths that personally
stuck out the most. The first myth states A great relationship depends on the great meeting of the
minds. He points out that partners will never fully be able to understand each other completely
because there are distinct psychological and physiological differences that make this completely
impossible. Recognize that a relationship is far more enjoyable when you re with someone who

Phil noted that men and women are wired differently and attempting to blur viewpoints is unnatural
and dangerous. When couples try to insist their viewpoints on each other, it often starts ego conflict
that can be harmful to the self esteem. Which ties in with Myth #3 Great relationships cause great
problem solving. Ironic myth, right? The ability to problem solve seems to be a key component in
healthy relationships? Dr. Phil embellished on this by pointing out that 90 percent of conflicts in
relationships are unsolvable, and you can still be happy even if you and your partner can t solve
disagreements. There are things that you and your partner disagree about and will continue to disagree
about. Why can t you once and for all resolve these issues? Because in order to do so, one of you
would have to sacrifice your values and beliefs. The textbook describes one of the dangers when
engaging in conflict is when power is unequally distributed by interpersonal power. Which causes the
other partner to feel unheard and weak in the relationship. Dr. Phil gives the advice that agreeing to
disagree is O.K.. If the problem is unsolvable, it s healthy to reach emotional closure this

Hawaii’s Renewable Energy Future Essay example
By 2020, Hawaii is aiming to generate 20 percent of its energy from non fossil fuels (Brown et al.
2008, 11). According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Arent et al. 2009, 1 2), petroleum
accounts for 90% of Hawaii s energy consumption and 75% of their electricity. Since Hawaii has no
pipelines or oil fields, they are forced to import petroleum to accommodate their energy needs (Arent
et al. 2009, 1). Hawaii is disconnected from the rest of the United States, which means that Hawaii has
to take care of its own energy needs (Croucher 2010, 79).How can alternative energy sources reduce
the need to import of petroleum?

Hawaii has the bioavailability to support biofuels as a renewable resource.
In addition to fuel crops, Hawaii also has abundant resources for biomass heating. During their
research Turn et al. (2002, 4) found that the biomass resources for Hawaii include: swine, dairy, and
poultry manure, sugarcane bagasse and trash, pineapple processing waste, macadamia nut shells,
municipal solid wastes, food waste from commercial food preparation facilities, sewage sludge, and
fat, oil and grease wastes from food preparation activities. One of the main advantages is that biomass
energy can use municipal solid waste. Hawaii also produces about 10 pounds of trash per person
coming to about 1.8 million tons of trash per year (Yap 2008). Hawaii has a power plant that can use
over 2,000 tons of garbage a day to generate electricity (Covanta Energy 2011). Hawaii has decided to
start exporting its garbage to give it enough time to expand the power plant s capacity (Yap 2008).
Smaller scale biomass fueled power generation can help get rid of agricultural and municipal refuse,
while alleviating the strain on the electricity grid and providing a cheap locally based source of
electricity (Turn, Keffer, and Staackmann 2002, 17). If Hawaii develops biomass as a renewable
resource, it can reduce the need to import petroleum and export garbage.
Biomass is not the only renewable alternative option for Hawaii, ethanol can also be produced in
Hawaii. According Keffer et al.(2009, 253), using

The Heart Of Heart Failure
In the United States alone, 5.8 million Americans have been diagnosed with heart failure (Mancini
Colombo, 2015, p. 2542). Heart failure is a condition where the heart does not pump as efficiently;
therefore, it does not meet the needs of the body. There is a growing number of heart failure patients
each year. More than 300,000 deaths per year are attributed to heart failure, and the annual cost to
manage these patients is close to $40 billion (Mancini Colombo, 2015, p. 2542). Since the heart
failure population is steadily growing in size the progress of therapies and management is continuing
to evolve. The greatest improvements have been surgery related. The two major surgical approaches
involve heart transplants or receiving a ventricular assist device (Mancini Colombo, 2015). There are
much discussion in regardless to receiving a heart transplant versus a ventricular assist device,
destination therapy, as well as future advances in ventricular assist devices.
Heart Transplant versus LVAD There are many considerations when it comes to determining whether
an individual should receive a heart transplant or a ventricular assist device. For instance, there are
different stages of heart failure. The New York Heart Association classifies heart failure into four
distinctive groups (Class I, Class II, Class III, and Class IV) (Jarvik Heart, Inc., 2008, para.2). Class I
and Class II patients only experience symptoms with some sort of physical activity,

Evaluation Of A Powerpoint Video Essay
Introduction
The artifact I am reflecting on is a voice project, which is a PowerPoint video that I developed during
the Health Education Methods and Materials (HLED 558) course, that held on the Summer of 2015
semester at Eastern Michigan University. The PowerPoint video was made as a part of the plan to
advocate the EMU Tobacco Free Policy that went on effect July 1st, 2015. Also, it was made to market
the STOP cessation program that will be implemented later to help student quitting smoking. This
PowerPoint is mainly a collecting of some pictures showing different places at EMU campus in a very
beautiful view. In addition, the PowerPoint also include the EMU free zone map moreover, the logo of
the policy, and the logo of STOP program that were designed by two of my class peers and the. The
EMU website was used as a source for some picture. The idea of the PowerPoint is based on showing
the beauty of the EMU campus and making the connection of that to the EMU environment and
student health regarding tobacco free campus. That connection was made by adding some thoughtful
words emphasizing the hidden meaning I want to show behind those picture. Then delivering the
message about the policy and the program, all that with a companion of music.

The Menagerie Sparknotes
The author depicts the hunger artist as a tragic figure, whose art of fasting, which was once widely
appreciated by the world, became totally neglected and forgotten. For the hunger artist whose only joy
and satisfaction in life is the excitement and admiration of the spectators, when that excitement turns
into disgust and the admiration turns into suspicion, so did the satisfaction the artist felt at the end of
each fasting performance. Alas, he became increasingly despondent and furious at the world for not
understanding his art. Yet, the hunger artist can t just give up his fasting ways, because for one thing

happens to be passing by to see the menagerie. The few visitors he get might have stayed longer, if not
for those pressing behind them behind them in the narrow gangway, who did not understand why they
should be held up on their way towards the excitements of the menagerie, made it impossible for
anyone to stand gazing for any length of time (Kafka, 4). As a result, he soon began to dislike the
visiting hours, for he can see in the eyes of the visitors that he is only a small impediment to the crowd
of people from visiting the better attraction, the menagerie. Although at last he was free to fast as long
as he like, free to astound the world of a never achieved record, the world isn t watching. The fine

Justus 2 We all love bacon, right? Maybe not! Many people have grew to dislike Mr. Nathaniel Bacon.
Why, or how, could they? Well, I ll tell you why, because Nathaniel Bacon is a very important history
character that we all need to know about. Bacon was born in England in 1674 to the famous Sir
Francis Bacon, the lord chancellor of England from 1618 1621 ( Encylopedia Britannica ). Mr. Bacon
arrived in North America in 1674 when his wife, Elizabeth s, father opposed their marriage. Bacon got
land along the James River in Virginia, and in less than a year, Bacon was made the governor of
council of Virginia with some family pull. Nathaniel Bacon was the Governor, William Berkeley s
cousin by marriage. ( Encylopedia Britannica ) Before Bacon arrived in 1674, frontier families were
just barely getting by. The weather was bad leading to less crop harvest and taxes were high. The
colonists grew angry with the government, saying the neighboring Indians should be removed ( Saint
or Sinner? ). The colonists at once take the reins and form an army. However, Gov. Berkeley says they
must not have a commander, or go against the Indians ( First American Rebel ). Bacon arrives in
North America at just the perfect time, in his eyes. Nathaniel Bacon was known to be very strong
minded, strong willed, very opinionated, short tempered young man. It turns ... Show more content on

Bacon even burned Jamestown down in September 1676, forcing Berkeley to the Eastern Shore
(Revel.pearson.com). In October 1676, Bacon died due to dysentery, a type of infectious diarrhea (
Summary of the Bacon Rebellion ). Berkeley defeated the group at Chesapeake Bay, and was able to
remain as governor when he returned to Jamestown. He treated the rebels poorly and had 23 hanged.
Berkeley was sent back to England and replaced. ( Summary of the Bacon

Criticism Of The Media In Gone Girl And The Braindead...
Are politicians or even newscasters trustworthy enough to present newsworthy material? Whether it s
about politics, an investigation, or a criminal trial, a person must critically analyze the information that
s being laid out in front of them before they should make any form of judgment based off what is
presented. Criticism of the media is an important aspect of Gone Girl and The Braindead Megaphone.
In both literary works, media is represented or described as subjective and storytelling pursuant which
can end up being dangerous in some situations, and is prevalent in the real worlds postmodern
broadcasting.
Subjectivism seems to be an issue with today s information that is being presented to the ill informed
population through various ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The jury could have been swayed by the non objective facts that they might have seen Ellen present
on her broadcast.
Later in the book, Nick talks about his feelings and thoughts about Amy (Flynn 302 303). The public
may view it as true even though there isn t any actual evidence of Nick s feelings about her (Flynn 302
303). These things aren t easy to physically prove so the public would have to take Nicks word if they
decide to believe him and see the situation from his viewpoint. In other words, he s able to
subjectively manipulate the situation to better his circumstances. The possible outcome of this
information being reported isn t necessarily destructive, even though it s psychologically manipulating
material. The presentation of this information would mainly have an effect as to how the public may
perceive Nick. Another characteristic of media that is portrayed in Gone Girl and described in The
Braindead Megaphone is Storytelling. George Saunders defines storytelling as the idea that we shape
or build our knowledge of a subject based off a simulacrum or representation of it that is provided by
the mass media (9). In The Braindead Megaphone, the individual with the megaphone (anybody
communicating to the outside world) becomes a storyteller/simulacra builder for the happening (9).
Storytelling could be destructive if the

Tony Kushner s Angels
In Angels in America, Tony Kushner s characters suffer through loss of health, life, and love. Colossal
suffering and grief eventually lead to discovery and growth. The main quartet of characters Louis
Ironson, Prior Walter, Joe and Harper Pitt have many differences, but, aside from their grief, a
common characteristic allows for their conjoined relevancy. Each is a member of a group that is
somehow marginalized in their society, whether it stems from their sexuality, illness, or personal
identity. Kushner s subtitle (A Gay Fantasia on National Themes) of the two part play can be
interpreted as speaking to its fantastic elements, like the presence of Prior s angels and spirits from the
past. However, fantasia can also be defined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I refer to Louis, Prior, Joe, and Harper as the quartet characters because of the intertwining and
simultaneous similarities and dissimilarities of their stories. These elements create a melodic rhythm
in the plays narrative and dialogue, which resembles the improvisatory style , that is necessary of
musical fantasias. Written in conversational language, none of the dialogue sounds rehearsed, but
rather like the characters are real people whose conversations were recorded by an eavesdropper. The
pages of the play read like an imitation of life, much like fantasias are imitations of melodies. Each
character has a different rhythm and style when they speak that creates quick paced communication,
much like the harmonies in a musical piece. If music appears to mimic some of the features of
language and to convey some of the same emotions that vocal communication does, then, transitively,
language mimics features of music. Louis is the rambler of the symphony. Using high level
vocabulary, he is often discussing profound ideas that other characters are not interested in hearing.
For example, after leaving Prior in the hospital room, Louis and Belize sit conversing in a coffee shop.
Louis tackles issues of race and democracy in America and England, until Belize finally admits that he

The Rights Of The Sound Maker
The provision expresses the rights of the sound maker, i.e. what is not required is implied. The
implication is that anybody apart from the marker is prevented by the Act to make reproductions
without authority (Craig, 2011, p. 105). On 23rd of June 2015, the rules of regulating sound
recordings were modified. The modifications were to the effect that unpublished sound recordings
would last for fifty years after fixation. If the sound recordings are published before the copyright
expires, the term application is seventy years before its publication or a hundred years from the date of
fixation. Consequently, it also extends the copyright for musical performers works contained in the
recordings (Craig, 2011, p.226). According to McCormack (2010), the Canadian Intellectual Property
Office defines performers performances. It states that copyright applies to a performer s performance
provided that it occurs in Canada or in any other country that accords its membership to the Rome
Convention country. Such performances will also qualify if it is embodied in a sound recording, whose
producer is either a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and or member country of Rome
Convention. However, if the producer of a sound recording is a corporation, its headquarters must be
based in Canada or a member of the Rome Convention. It all implies that the intellectual property
protection and, in particular, copyright rules will apply, as long as the disclaimer is either a Canadian

Americans With Disability Act Essay
Introduction
The history of the Americans with Disabilities Act began long before it was originally introduced to
Congress in 1988. (Mayerson, 1992). There isn t one person responsible for the ADA but rather
thousands of Americans who have fought for the rights of people with disabilities and constantly
worked to make their lives easier. People with disabilities for a long time were thought of as outsiders
in society and were shunned by the majority. It wasn t until the 1900 s when organizations by and for
people with disabilities exploded in popularity and began to get attention and make real positives
changes for people struggling with disabilities (Meldon). A profound and historic period for disability
public policy occurred under ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Specifically, in a case known as the Sutton Trilogy of 1999 in which the Disability Rights Education
and Defense Fund participated presenting arguments in favor of a broad interpretation of the definition
of disability presented by the ADA, the high court ruled resulting in a significantly limited
interpretation of the federal definition of disability. This was the first ruling that eventually lead to the
ADAAmendments Act of 2008 which was passed in response to the number of decisions by the
Supreme Court that had interpreted the original text of the ADA (Brief History of Civil Rights, 2017).
The ADAAA was signed into law in September of 2008 by President George W. Bush to counteract
the Supreme Court s narrow interpretation of disability and provide broad protection from
discrimination (Timeline of the ADA). One of the things that the ADAAA required was that courts
interpreting the ADA and other federal disability laws focus on whether the covered entity had
discriminated, rather than whether the individual seeking the law s protection had an impairment that
fit within the technical definition of the term disability (Brief History of Civil Rights, 2017). The
ADAAA took effect in 2009 and had multiple regulations updated over the next couple years.
Currently, the ADA celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2015 and continues to maintain that the
definition of disability should be construed in favor of broad coverage of

  • 2. F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Barn Sadly, Ruth all but knows that she stays because Paul is white. She is still so ashamed of the event that she wants to cleanse her blackness and dirtiness with Paul s whiteness and cleanliness. The binary oppositions that have been passed on from white American culture to black American culture have claimed another victim and Ruth is left to deal with her emotional scarring alone. Paul s touch would never release her...whenever he touched her, she became blacker and dirtier than ever...[but] her blackness was not Paul s fault. Neither was her guilt. She was punishing herself for something, a crime she could not remember. You dirty...you black and dirty... (Baldwin). She wants very much to be content with being a black woman in America, who has no reason to feel shame for being sexual, but the event in the barn weighs heavily on her at all times. She is so desperate to be cleansed by way of Paul s whiteness that she will not leave a toxic, unfulfilling, nearly one sided relationship. Instead, she goes to work every day and seethes, thinking about what conquest he might acquire in her absence. Ruth s issues with her race and sexuality also come to the fore in the office, as she shares her coffee breaks with her female coworkers. While all the other office girls are whispering and conspiring over the marvelous Mr. Davis, their black superior, Ruth is contemplating her mixed race relationship and the unlikelihood that Mr. Davis would take up a gossipy office girl. In 1819 Thomas Hancock discovered that latex rubber can be masticated, but unfortunately mastication deprived rubber of its elastic qualities. Charles Goodyear has discovered vulcanization in 1839, which solved the problem and also kept rubber products from becoming tacky. Hence the commercial uses of rubber multiplied greatly. Shortly thereafter, the rise of the automobile industry at the century s turn resulted in a tremendous increase in the demand for rubber and its principal application in the manufacture of automobile and truck tires. Thus, SWOT analysis was being used to identify the strength, weaknesses, opportunity, and threats of the company s operation. The strength for Taurus is well established background, reputation for quality, strong division and strategic internal development. The weakness is inefficiencies productivity, weak competitive position and not incorporated division. The threat and opportunity is from the external environment. The opportunity is highly attractive market, awareness of joint venture and merging, high demand of rubbers and tires, opportunity to privatise and the competitiveness of Hungary s exports. Lastly, the threat is high threat of new entrants, maturity of tires, occurrence of new private law and crisis in Hungarian industry. Based on the problem statement and the SWOT analysis we suggest four alternatives. First alternative is strategic alliances by creating new strategic business units (SBUs). • 4. Analyzing The Film Story Of The Ark In PEI In a world that is focused on consumption, living sustainably means living against the grain. Our final lecture reflection studied different lifestyles that oppose traditional norms and embrace sustainability. Minimalism is a documentary on people who defy the idea that possessions bring happiness and choose to live with as little as possible. Toke Miller emphasises the importance of changing our ways, to see the world with kindness, love, and consciousness. Finally, Steve Mannell shares the story of the Ark in PEI which promotes a self sufficient alternative to modern housing. By examining and changing the ways that we live our lives we can approach a way to live sustainably. Minimalism, a documentary directed by Matt D Avella, explores ... The Ark was built in the 1970 s and strived to change the way people thought about and interacted with technology and the environment. It is a greenhouse home which re invents modern housing norms. Committed to living lightly on the earth, the Arc is self sufficient as it is designed to harvest and conserve energy through the use of solar and wind power. The house desires not have have segregated systems of production, but many systems which all work together. The greenhouse allows residents to simply go and harvest foods instead of having to refrigerate and buy foods. Residents are able to grow foods all year long due to the heat conserving design which can store heat for up to six months that warms the house and allows food to grow. The house also avoids using pesticides through integrated pest management! Plant clippings were thrown into an algae tank which feeds fish that are then sold or eaten. The algae tank also helped with heating the house, as algae is really good at absorbing and radiating heat. The Ark also had other features such as a barn and self composting toilets and in total cost only $350 000 in 1975 which converts to $130 per square foot today (Mannell, S., 2017, March, 30)! I found this lecture to be very interesting, as I always worry about how my living situation impacts my level of sustainability. In my home we have two fridges and a large freezer and they use up too much energy. My family could learn more on how to live lightly on the earth from the Arc, which allows residents to make dinner from the food in their greenhouse and the fish in their pond, and their food waste can be thrown into their self composting toilets. If we learned to grow some of our own food, and to store less in our fridges, we could waste less energy! This reminds of Ruth Forsdyke s lecture where she spoke about the ... The atmosphere was perfect for contemplation and thought, which is exactly what I want in a museum. I was still surprised of course; my visit to the Art Institute of Chicago had been very different. Unlike in Huntington, Chicago s museum was packed to the brim, and the people within it practically shouting just to be heard. It is very easy to decide which one I liked more, in terms of surroundings anyway. As I walked along, my footsteps echoing, I could not help but feel like there was something missing. The art was perfectly fine, but there was a lack of liveliness to the place, something that Chicago had in spades. I remember noticing that the art only had names, and no descriptions. This was something I disliked extremely. It is nice to look at images I suppose, but I want some history. I want the time period, and a description of the artist, two things that play a huge role in what a painting is actually about. I felt like I should just naturally understand what each piece of art was trying to describe to me, which was an irritating feeling. It only took me about twenty minutes to go through the entire museum. Nothing really drew me in, except for a couple of pieces. This was entirely different from my visit to the Art Institute of Chicago. There, almost everything drew me in. All the paintings, and especially some of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Russell On Truth Bertrand Russell discussed certain problems he found with philosophy. Russell was concerned about how much did we really know. There is the stuff we know with our mind when we have a particular idea, and stuff we know through actually experiencing it which would justify it. But how do we know if it is real, or even there, for that matter? Russell says, For if we cannot be sure of the independent existence of object, we cannot be sure of the independent existence of other people s bodies, and therefore still less of other peoples minds, since we have no grounds for believing in their minds except such as are derived from observing their bodies (Russell, 47). Russell believed that all of our knowledge, both knowledge of things and knowledge of truths, rest upon acquaintance as its foundation. It is therefore important to consider what kinds of things there are which we have acquaintance (Russell, 57). You know stuff through acquaintance by directly experiencing it and you know stuff through description from hearing what other have told you from there direct experiences. William James on the other hand would have had different views than Russell in some aspects. James believed that you needed more than just an idea to make something true, it needed power. James believes that truth is dynamic rather than static. James feels truth happens when everything holds together, when what you believe actually fits in with other things you also believe. While at the same time, James believed something is false when it doesn t fit in with the systems of your beliefs. James said, The most violent revolutions in an individual s beliefs leave most of his old order standing. Time and space, cause and effect, nature and history, and one s biography remain untouched. New truth is always a go between, a smoother over of transitions. It marries old opinion to new fact so as ever to show a minimum of jolt, a maximum of continuity (James, 124). This could be a way for the child to assert control in response to a fight with a parent. These theorists believe that children with selective mutism chose not to speak in public to maintain their power, despite having the ability to speak. Researches emphasize the idea that children often continue this relationship with new individuals who can remove this power, such as a new teacher. Differing from psychodynamic theorists, behaviorists believe that children have been taught to use silence to help control the anxiety that they might feel. For example, if a child is uncomfortable in a certain situation, chooses not to speak, and has reduced anxiety, they have learned that silence is an effective tool (Busse Downey, 2011). . Selective mutism was first diagnosed by Adolf Kussmaul in the 1800s. We pertain to the ideas of acceptance and understanding of individuals that have the intention to become apart of team Australia. But what do we know Australia as? A community of equal citizens Abbott declares (The Conversation, 2014). We can all assume that we as individuals idealise a country of equity and equality in all aspects of life, whether it be race, gender, beliefs or political views. In a world where we want fairness and equality, we coin the concept of social and cultural cohesion, which can be defined as the ties that hold people together (Humanrights.gov.au, 2017). Moreover, social cohesion is regarded as a shared vision, and is a process rather than an outcome (Scanlonfoundation.org.au, 2017). Jenson hypothesised a framework that identifies the importances of social cohesion between individuals. He states that the disruption of social cohesion effects dimensions of belonging, legitimacy, recognition, participation and inclusion (Study.com, 2017). In contrast to this we come across an unwanted prejudice and discrimination towards certain aspects of life. We define this as cultural conflict, the conflict that occurs when different cultural values and beliefs clash with opposing values and beliefs (LeBaron, 2003). In regards to Jenson s framework of social cohesion, cultural conflict revolves around the five dimension. With disruption to this, views are altered into a more negative outlook, ... • 22. How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life Adopted as the latest craze, mindfulness is more than just a passing fad. This meditation technique stretches back thousands of years in Eastern cultures. While it was once a technique used primarily by Buddhist monks, modern researchers have discovered some of the immense benefits of being mindful in every day life. How Mindfulness Works At its heart, mindfulness is just a way to pay closer attention to everything that is going on. It focuses on rooting yourself in the present to notice what is really happening within your mind and body. You begin to notice the things that are going on around you without judging what is going on. The flowers grow, your boss gives you a new project and cars drive by just because that is what they do. With this mind set, you stop judging and are able to just exist within the moment. Instead of allowing yourself to go into autopilot, you are able to observe your life at a distance. With a mindfulness practice, the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is improved, which allows for greater self regulation, less impulsiveness and better focus. The gray matter in the hippocampus increases. Since the hippocampus is responsible for emotion, memories, the limbic system and cortisol, changes in this section of the brain can reduce post traumatic stress disorder, depression and chronic stress. Teacher s professional practice is developed over time in various ways, for example through experience and reflection (Tack et al, 2014). My professional practice was informed by Meeting Children s Needs module as it educated me on how to assist children to become successful learners. This can be achieved through various strategies that meet the diverse needs of every child. Hence it is important that schools embrace diversity to ensure effective learning of all takes place. Each child is special and as a practitioner working with children I have to be aware of all issues surrounding children s lives as outside factors affect learning. These concepts of meeting children s needs prepared me for my SEL experience in many ways. Firstly, it allowed me to understand the importance of inclusion and how this was crucial to effective learning. One pupil I profiled was Jake; not given a SEN statement, however the teacher ensured she differentiated, in turn enhancing his learning. Jake was very capable but he had behavioural issues and suffered from low self esteem: very shy and liked working on his own. After his work was completed he would act out. This behaviour was similar to the case study of Charlotte as her behaviour deteriorated for attention. Charlotte just like Jake had low self esteem; these children need to be given challenging work so they can reach their full potential. The reported value will be known as a net book value because of the change in cost over time (Finkler, Kovner, and amp;, 2007). Objective evidence Due to mishaps with the cost principle and inconsistency of the balance sheet, objective evidence is used. Objective evidence is providing proof objectively of financially statements and expenses by different groups of individuals that are expected to agree (Finkler, Kovner, amp; Jones, 2007). One of the main advantages is that biomass energy can use municipal solid waste. Hawaii also produces about 10 pounds of trash per person coming to about 1.8 million tons of trash per year (Yap 2008). • 39. Criticism Of The Media In Gone Girl And The Braindead... Are politicians or even newscasters trustworthy enough to present newsworthy material? Whether it s about politics, an investigation, or a criminal trial, a person must critically analyze the information that s being laid out in front of them before they should make any form of judgment based off what is presented. Criticism of the media is an important aspect of Gone Girl and The Braindead Megaphone. In both literary works, media is represented or described as subjective and storytelling pursuant which can end up being dangerous in some situations, and is prevalent in the real worlds postmodern broadcasting. Subjectivism seems to be an issue with today s information that is being presented to the ill informed population through various ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The jury could have been swayed by the non objective facts that they might have seen Ellen present on her broadcast. Later in the book, Nick talks about his feelings and thoughts about Amy (Flynn 302 303). The public may view it as true even though there isn t any actual evidence of Nick s feelings about her (Flynn 302 303). These things aren t easy to physically prove so the public would have to take Nicks word if they decide to believe him and see the situation from his viewpoint. In other words, he s able to subjectively manipulate the situation to better his circumstances. The possible outcome of this information being reported isn t necessarily destructive, even though it s psychologically manipulating material. The presentation of this information would mainly have an effect as to how the public may perceive Nick. Another characteristic of media that is portrayed in Gone Girl and described in The Braindead Megaphone is Storytelling. George Saunders defines storytelling as the idea that we shape or build our knowledge of a subject based off a simulacrum or representation of it that is provided by the mass media (9). In The Braindead Megaphone, the individual with the megaphone (anybody communicating to the outside world) becomes a storyteller/simulacra builder for the happening (9). Storytelling could be destructive if the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Tony Kushner s Angels In Angels in America, Tony Kushner s characters suffer through loss of health, life, and love. Colossal suffering and grief eventually lead to discovery and growth. The main quartet of characters Louis Ironson, Prior Walter, Joe and Harper Pitt have many differences, but, aside from their grief, a common characteristic allows for their conjoined relevancy. Each is a member of a group that is somehow marginalized in their society, whether it stems from their sexuality, illness, or personal identity. Kushner s subtitle (A Gay Fantasia on National Themes) of the two part play can be interpreted as speaking to its fantastic elements, like the presence of Prior s angels and spirits from the past. However, fantasia can also be defined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I refer to Louis, Prior, Joe, and Harper as the quartet characters because of the intertwining and simultaneous similarities and dissimilarities of their stories. These elements create a melodic rhythm in the plays narrative and dialogue, which resembles the improvisatory style , that is necessary of musical fantasias. Written in conversational language, none of the dialogue sounds rehearsed, but rather like the characters are real people whose conversations were recorded by an eavesdropper. The pages of the play read like an imitation of life, much like fantasias are imitations of melodies. Each character has a different rhythm and style when they speak that creates quick paced communication, much like the harmonies in a musical piece. If music appears to mimic some of the features of language and to convey some of the same emotions that vocal communication does, then, transitively, language mimics features of music. Louis is the rambler of the symphony. Using high level vocabulary, he is often discussing profound ideas that other characters are not interested in hearing. For example, after leaving Prior in the hospital room, Louis and Belize sit conversing in a coffee shop. Louis tackles issues of race and democracy in America and England, until Belize finally admits that he was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Rights Of The Sound Maker The provision expresses the rights of the sound maker, i.e. what is not required is implied. The implication is that anybody apart from the marker is prevented by the Act to make reproductions without authority (Craig, 2011, p. 105). On 23rd of June 2015, the rules of regulating sound recordings were modified. The modifications were to the effect that unpublished sound recordings would last for fifty years after fixation. If the sound recordings are published before the copyright expires, the term application is seventy years before its publication or a hundred years from the date of fixation. Consequently, it also extends the copyright for musical performers works contained in the recordings (Craig, 2011, p.226). According to McCormack (2010), the Canadian Intellectual Property Office defines performers performances. It states that copyright applies to a performer s performance provided that it occurs in Canada or in any other country that accords its membership to the Rome Convention country. Such performances will also qualify if it is embodied in a sound recording, whose producer is either a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and or member country of Rome Convention. However, if the producer of a sound recording is a corporation, its headquarters must be based in Canada or a member of the Rome Convention. It all implies that the intellectual property protection and, in particular, copyright rules will apply, as long as the disclaimer is either a Canadian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Americans With Disability Act Essay Introduction The history of the Americans with Disabilities Act began long before it was originally introduced to Congress in 1988. (Mayerson, 1992). There isn t one person responsible for the ADA but rather thousands of Americans who have fought for the rights of people with disabilities and constantly worked to make their lives easier. People with disabilities for a long time were thought of as outsiders in society and were shunned by the majority. It wasn t until the 1900 s when organizations by and for people with disabilities exploded in popularity and began to get attention and make real positives changes for people struggling with disabilities (Meldon). A profound and historic period for disability public policy occurred under ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Specifically, in a case known as the Sutton Trilogy of 1999 in which the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund participated presenting arguments in favor of a broad interpretation of the definition of disability presented by the ADA, the high court ruled resulting in a significantly limited interpretation of the federal definition of disability. This was the first ruling that eventually lead to the ADAAmendments Act of 2008 which was passed in response to the number of decisions by the Supreme Court that had interpreted the original text of the ADA (Brief History of Civil Rights, 2017). The ADAAA was signed into law in September of 2008 by President George W. Bush to counteract the Supreme Court s narrow interpretation of disability and provide broad protection from discrimination (Timeline of the ADA). One of the things that the ADAAA required was that courts interpreting the ADA and other federal disability laws focus on whether the covered entity had discriminated, rather than whether the individual seeking the law s protection had an impairment that fit within the technical definition of the term disability (Brief History of Civil Rights, 2017). The ADAAA took effect in 2009 and had multiple regulations updated over the next couple years. Currently, the ADA celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2015 and continues to maintain that the definition of disability should be construed in favor of broad coverage of ...
