Walker Ackoff (1969)
Projects as open systems (identifying the project nature in systems terms)
Systems thinking and project management evolved together from meeting the same challenges during
the 1950s (Winch, 2010). The system approach helps to understand the complexity of the processes
and the interrelationships with them. (Walker A. , 2015).
Ackoff (1969) considers system as:
An entity, conceptual or physical, which consists of interdependent parts. Each of a system s elements
is connected to every other element, directly or indirectly, and no sub set of elements is unrelated to
any other sub set .
Walker (2007, p. 67) states that systems theory helps to explain how the project management process
should be structured and hence how the various firms and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These types describe the extent of interaction between project actors. Pooled interdependency means,
that actors do not interact straightly, but contribute individual pieces to the whole. Even though they
are not directly linked, their performance affects each other. Sequential interdependency has a serial
form. There is the direct interdependency of units on each other: the output of the entity becomes the
input for the followed one. Both parts make contributions to and are sustained by the whole. In case of
reciprocal interdependency, the outputs of each become the inputs for the others, but not in a serial
form. Each unit poses contingency for the other. Reciprocal interdependency has the highest level of
complexity and dominates in construction projects, which shows the need for the highest level of
integration. (Baccarini, 1996)
Thompson (1967) suggests that sequential interdependency consists of the elements of pooled
interdependency, whereas reciprocal interdependency embraces the elements of both pooled and
sequential. This shows the links between the types of interdependence.
The three types of interdependency have significant implications for how to achieve coordination in
construction, as they imply that the actors must adjust and direct their activities and resources in and
between numerous supply chains and numerous construction sites. (Bankvall,

Today, the traditional sense of what the environment embodies has evolved with the emergence of the
technosphere, a new addition to the four natural components of Earth (aquasphere, atmosphere,
biosphere, geosphere). This man made monster threatens the Earth s longevity and stability by
drawing on natural resources to keep itself going, and damaging those natural resources with waste
products in the process. Moreover, with an education system engineered to create jobs in the
technosphere, the world s ecosystems are left to be defended by only a handful of people who
understand the legitimacy of this perpetual, systemic threat. In the modern age, environmentalists are

Founded by Prince Bernhard of Lippe Biesterfeld (among others) in 1961, the WWF focuses on
preserving forests, marine, freshwater, wildlife, food and climate that are threatened by the growing
technosphere. Through donations, hands on work, and political action, their 5 million member army of
preservationists has amassed an endless list of accomplishments. Financially, this group has invested
over 1$ billion in more than 12,000 conservation initiatives since 1995, and in terms of hands on
work, the WWF has helped to bring many species back from the brink of extinction, including the
black rhinoceros, southern white rhinoceros, greater one horned asian rhinoceros, gray whale, african
savannah elephant, mountain gorilla, saiga (antelope), and others. Further in terms of political action,
the WWF has engaged in countless court activities to protect the environment since 1961. In fact,
following several years of advocacy by WWF and others, 18 governments signed the Ramsar
Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, which remains the world s only international
environmental treaty for a single biome (WWF, 50 Years of Achievement). This treaty has preserved

The Role Of Ethics In The Great Gatsby
Ethics and Morals
Morals are the principles on which one s judgments of right and wrong are based. Ethics are principles
of right conduct. These two words are closely related. I think morals and ethics should be followed. In
the book The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald characters display immoral actions. The
characters simply aren t bothered by some of their bad choices with work ethics, marriage, and
common sense. In the book, good work ethics are poorly disregarded. Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he s a
gambler. (Fitzgerald 73) Gatsby tells Nick this at lunch and explains how Wolfsheim is responsible for
the fixing of the 1919 world series. He gambled knowing the outcome would be in his favor, and he
got a lot of money off of cheating. Wolfsheim s act clearly shows how much he cares about work
ethics. Tom brings up the fact that Gatsby was a bootlegger and he infers that s where all his money
came from. I found out what your drug stores were. He and this Wolfshiem bought up a lot of side
street drug stores here in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter. That s one ... Show more

Such as Daisy killing Myrtle. The negro told the police when investigating the scene Auto hit her. Ins

down or take any responsibility for it, instead she let Gatsby get blamed. Which leads to Myrtle s
husband getting mad and killing Gatsby. Gatsby wouldn t be dead if Daisy would of just stopped when
she hit Myrtle. Jordan Baker was found immoral in the book too. Nick said she lied a lot, also she
cheated in a golf match. Nick said At her first big golf tournament there was a row that nearly reached
the newspaper a suggestion that she had moved her ball from a bad lie in the semi final round. (57)

Examples Of Tragedy In Death Of A Salesman
American Tragedy Aristotle defines what a tragedy is in his famed piece Poetics. In it, he sets
guidelines that all tragedies should meet in order to become the fantastic displays of misery that they
are meant to be. Six main elements are present in every tragedy: plot, character, thought, diction,
melody, and spectacle. The two most important, of course, were plot and character. Both had to be
complex but believable, consistent, and possess the ability to arouse pity and fear in the audience.
Although both are the top elements that are the focus of tragedy, the other four are imperative to
achieve the tone and overall character of one. In Death of A Salesman by Arthur Miller, the character
Willy Loman is an average modern American man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More than that, he wanted to become that man that he admired who died the death of a salesman in his
green velvet slippers whose funeral garnered many loving friends and family (Miller 81). Audiences
can relate as they too have had an idol in their head that they have aspired to become. Seeing the
aspirations of Willy warrants pity in the audience when they see what a failure Willy Loman becomes.
Failure is what consumes Willy. He understands that that is his life. But in his deep deluded mind
twisted with broken memories and false hopes he can never truly accept it. He never has that point of
discovery that a tragic hero does. Willy Loman never realizes the doom waiting for him at the end of
his downward spiral. Even his attempts at suicide, and finally his one successful one, were misguided
and were attempts to become something greater. No one shows up at the funeral besides his family. He
is not great like a tragic hero. Willy Loman is a nobody, he is only a tragic hero to himself, just like
everyone in the audience. Everyone sings the song of their own tragedy . That is the American tragedy.
Everyone is the American tragic hero with their own tragedy. Arthur Miller captures the Average man
with the average family and average dreams, living an average life with no gain in the end.
Many people argue that Death of a Salesman should fall under the genre of tragedy. They argue that

The Siege Of Leningrad
When the author comments in chapter 6 that Pi s kitchen has a reserve of food to last the siege of
Leningrad it s important to know the significance behind that actual quote and so we look to the
history behind The siege of Leningrad . The siege of Leningrad was a prolonged military blockade by
the German army against the Soviet Union during World War Two on the city of Leningrad. It started
on the 8 of September 1941 with the German army blocking all roads to Leningrad, this was to block
anything from coming in or out of Leningrad as the German forces want to starve the Russian forces
and people of communication, food and water. This crippled the people of Leningrad leaving them to
eat nothing but cats, sawdust, wallpaper paste . This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the major reasons being the importance of the city as Leningrad was a major military outpost
for the Soviet Union and used to be the capital, so this importance to the Soviet Union shows why the
Germans took control of it and started their siege. Another reason for the siege was to draw the Soviet
forces to fight at Leningrad instead of other places. This left a lot of their border weaken and ripe for
attack from the German army. The historical importance of the The Siege of Leningrad must never be
forgotten for many reasons. One of these reasons being the cruelty it shows, as during the siege the
German army killed millions of innocent people in a very cruel way, showing us that even our enemy
are still human. Another way this siege has such importance in history is the human perseverance it
showed on both sides. For the Soviets it was the way that many still survived even despite the siege
and on the German side it was the way they kept the siege up without relenting for 2 years, 4 months,
2 weeks and 5. A final way this siege has historical importance is the way it swayed World War Two
for the Germans on the eastern front as they were losing for a year but was on top after the siege. The
historical event of the Siege of Leningrad has such historical importance and it s important to look at
the history behind it when the author talks of it to better understand what the author is trying to

The Most Significant Moment In My Life
We all have that moment in life that changes us in some ways. I think back at events in my life, as an
example the births of my children that caused me to grow into a mother and the woman I am today.
However, there is a moment in my life, after my children, I was psychologically lost. This moment
changed my life forever! I was married for thirteen years with five children. During these thirteen
years, I would be the head of the house hold and ensured structure in the house. My husband at the
time, was an addict and in/out of prison. We attempt counseling and all types of treatment. The last six
years together, we were very involved in church. My faith in God grew and I believed my husband
could be delivered from this addition. I had to be the strong one in the family, the rock, the foundation
of our house to give the perception to people we were okay. After trying everything possible, I
realized, only he can be in recovery of addiction, I cannot make him. I had to make the decision to
break up my family for the safety of my children. After my separation, I became angry. My faith was
questionable, and I was angry at God. My family was torn, we lived with a friend in a small room. My
step children had to live with their mom because I could not afford to keep them. I no longer felt
strong, or had structure in my house. The feeling of failure and the mourning of the loss of my family
was overwhelming. I began to drink alcohol every day. My daily routine would consist of going to
work and as soon as I got out I would stop and get a Smirnoff Black, go home, cook for the three kids,
leave work out, drink and go out, go home at two am. The next six months, I did not care about
anything or anyone. I allowed these feelings to consume me. In September 2013, the first week, I was
driving drunk, I swerved and ran my mirror in to the wall. The second week, I was drunk and could
not leave the parking lot of a club, until the following morning. The third week, I was driving drunk to
a friend s house, and I remember fighting with him at the door way, and he asked me to leave. The
next thing I remember I woke up in a stranger s car, holding a blanket to my chin full of blood. The
young gentleman driving said, Miss, you

Argumentative Essay On Abortion
In medicine, abortion is the premature exit of the products of conception (the fetus, fetal membranes,
and placenta) from the uterus. It is the loss of a pregnancy and does not refer to why the pregnancy
was lost (https://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=2091). Abortion is a very
contentious issue and the attitude towards it has always been and is still very controversial. It has
caused uncounted deaths and violent confrontations between the supporters of the two separate
parties. Pro life supporters advocate that everyone has the right to life, even Fetus, and Pro choice
supporters argue that the right to abortion is absolute. In Abortion, No more Apologies, Katha Pollitt
states abortion as a normal part of a woman s reproductive life, one that should be accepted as a moral
right and a fundamental choice with positive social implications. In this article, Pollitt takes on the
personhood argument by reaffirming the personal right and choice of a woman to control her own
body. She talked about how the abortion subject has always been in the shadow. She gave the example
of her mother that had an abortion but never told her about it, and she only knew about from some
papers after her mother s death. Nobody knew about the abortion that her mom had, not even her mom
s best friend. She pointed to the psychological and even physiological dangers of unwanted
pregnancies that necessitate the legalization of abortion. An unintended pregnancy is so stressful for
women, as is the process of making a decision regarding its outcome. The fear that accompanies the
idea of abortion or the complications that might occur after the procedures, are considered as major
negative effects on women s health. She heartedly defended abortion as a right similar to education. A
woman who can choose her major and her career can make her own decision about keeping her
pregnancy or not. To criminalize abortion is to go back to where we were in the 50 s, to the
tremendous amount of illegal abortions, which was extremely dangerous. She aimed in her
comparison between women in the past and currently, to explain how legalization of abortion changed
how women are seeing themselves now: mothers by choice, not by

National Health Care For The United States
According to Cothran (2015), Over the past five decades, there have been major shifts in how we pay
for hospital care, physician services, long term care, prescription drugs, and other services and
products . Before Medicare and Medicaid, about half of hospital care was not covered by insurance.
About 100 % of the spending on prescription medications came from the customers in the 1960s
(Cothran, 2015). But, in 2014, customers spent 15% less. Team B will explain our position on national
health care spending in the United States. We will also include: current national health care costs, if

The pharmaceutical industry is yet another part of health care that is receiving immense profits from
its advertisements and a physician prescribing only certain medications. The truth is that some of the
medicines can cause more harm than good. So who s really profiting? Truth is, that the physicians and
pharmaceutical companies are benefiting; when the doctor prescribes medications that causes more
issues than it cures, a revolving door is created so that the physicians and pharmaceutical companies
can keep gaining profits. For instance, if a patient receives medicine to treat an ailment and it creates
more health issues then the doctor will now keep prescribing medications to fix an issue, when it is
actually making the patient worse. By creating a need the companies are able to keep themselves
afloat. The federal budget was 3.8 trillion for the 2015 fiscal year. The government to take care of
each and every American divides the 3.8 trillion; this comes to about 12,000 per American ( National
Priorities Project , 2015). Over 90% of federal monies are used for mandatory and discretionary
spending. The rest is spent on interest that the government has accumulated. 1.11 trillion is the
equivalent of what was spent in discretionary spending in 2015. About 60% was spent on military and
government, 6% on education, the rest was divided almost equally 5% or less on: veteran s benefits,
food and agriculture, transportation, science, environment, housing and

African American Black Arts Poetry
This chapter undertakes to explicate the way that distinction operates at a key moment in African
American cultural history. Black art is the aesthetic and spiritual sister of the Black power. The Black
arts and the Black power concept both relate to the African Americans for self determination and
nationhood. It has been widely held that the fundamental characteristic of Black arts poetry is its
virulent antiwhite rhetoric. Houston Baker stated, the influential black critic J. Saunders Redding
disparaged the Black Aesthetic as representative of a discourse of hate , a native racism in reverse .

1970s followed in the wake of the peaceful Civil Rights Movement. The development advanced racial
pride and ethnic union rather than the emphasis on reconciliation of the Civil Rights Movement and
embraced a more activist stance even with prejudice. It likewise roused another renaissance in African
American scholarly and aesthetic articulation for the most part alluded to as the African American or
Dark Arts Movement. The inheritance of the African American oral convention shows in differing

Parliamentary vs Presidential, Which is Better for the...
The parliamentary system is a system of democratic governance wherein the executive and legislative
branches of the government are intertwined and are lead collectively by a Prime Minister who must
have been proven to be competent and capable, as chosen among his party members. However, the
Philippines is currently under the presidential system, also a system of democratic but republican
governance, which is led this time by a president, and wherein there is a separation of powers between
the executive and the legislative. In the presidential system, people have the collective power to vote
for the president. On one hand, the similarities between the two systems can be summed up in one

Another is that Filipinos have a culture of apathy and tend to use religion incorrectly and passively.
People depend on religion and settle for what s okay. In addition, the initial reaction of Filipinos to
change is resistance, and this is why the country does not necessarily progress, or at least, progress at a
continuous rate. Then, countries like Spain and Portugal only rode the economic tiger after they
realized that the only way to survive was change (3.Y). Plus, according to another critic, the
Philippines already had the experience of being under the parliamentary system during the time of
Marcos which only resulted in a People Power Revolution. So why should the country bother going

The Pros And Cons Of The Bubble Act
Part III: The Bubble Act and How It Kick Started the South Sea Bubble
It would make sense, given the series of events leading to the Bubble Act of 1720, that Aislabie felt it
would help the South Sea scheme. However, the missing piece of the South Sea Bubble is Robert
Walpole. In 1720, Lady Cowper, in her diary, noted that the king needed £600,000 to pay off the Debts
of the Civil List. She noted that because, in the winter of 1720, Walpole did not win the contract to
take on the public debt for the Bank of England, his consolation prize was to get his way on how the
£600,000 would be paid off. At the time, the South Sea Company did not hold the contract to take on
this particular £600,000. Walpole decided that the two marine insurance companies, ... Show more

been, his financial dealings with the two marine insurance companies allowed the company to grow
nearly 50% in only two days. Effectively, Walpole sped up the formation of the South Sea Bubble,
inflating it even faster than it had before. The South Sea Company tried to artificially grow on its own
terms. By being forced to provide an unlimited loan, it no longer had any negotiating power, since it
had already extended unlimited credit. Walpole may not have immediately suppressed the South Sea

other luxury watches consumers, those entrepreneurs are younger, and they prefer the sense of future

financial situation of the Mundy household. The conflicts of society are also expressed by Friel in the

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque
All Quiet on the Western Front, written by Erich Remarque is a novel dealing with one young mans
transformation from an average person into a hardened man that eventually turns away from the
society that he once was a part of. Remarque wrote this novel to emphasize the disorder and chaos that
is created in war. This sense of disorder was felt within the soldiers as well as the civilians that have
no part in the fighting. Civilians often had a glamorous portrayal of war that was preached to many but
it soon became a harsh reality, the horror for the many that saw it. The novel centers on a young

becomes disoriented and has a panic attack. He says Tormented, terrified, in my imagination, I see the

recognizes the voices and realizes that he is close to his comrades in his own trench. Baumer begins to
comprehend that the reviving effects of his comrades words were much stronger and powerful than
anything that his family or friends could ever say to him. He notices that the words of the traditional

Effects Of Parental Addiction On Children
THE EFFECTS PARENTAL ADDICTIONS HAVE ON CHILDREN
Alexis Holcomb
The cost of alcohol and substance abuse in the United States reaches heights of four hundred eighty
four billion dollars per year ( Magnitude ). That s about seven hundred eighty times the amount it cost
to diagnose and treat sexually transmitted diseases in the year 2000 (Chesson). The sole purpose of
this is not to persuade you one way or the other on this topic. Nor is the purpose to apologize for this
social issue. The purpose of this writing is to employ data showing the societal effects parental
addictions have on children, to show how this data has remained relevant in society, and to show how
it is affecting our future members of society.
In this paper, I look at forms of substance abuse and the effects on children. I will be using the
following headings to break down the different issues associated with this social problem: social
causes, phenomenon, and consequences. I hope to educate those that may be ignorant to the situation,
and help to spark a flame that can be used to not be a bystander, but a solution to the problem at hand.
Social Causes
An estimated twenty five percent of youth under eighteen are exposed to familial alcohol abuse
(Bellum). The Illinois Department of Human Services says that nearly six hundred seventy five
thousand children per year suffer serious abuse or neglect as a direct result of substance abuse (

Should William Penn be a heroic figure to American history? Throughout British proprietary
colonization of the Americas, there were many different motives for claiming American soil by those
whom were audacious enough to consider the prospect of funding a distant statehood. Penn claimed to

intent to provide refuge to those whom faced religious persecution, even so, the devout Quaker,

obtaining American real estate than English. He recognized his charter as a means of enlarging his
property holdings and his way out of personals debt (page 122). While Penn s intent of establishing a

Mountain Top removal mining (MTM), is decimating some of the last pristine environments left in our
country, and it needs to stop. The devastation left in the wake of mans pursuit to satisfy his insatiable
greed for energy, is nothing shy of a brutal crime scene. I feel, like many others, it has got to be
stopped, and replaced with a more sensible, and appropriate, appetite for energy. The severe health,
and environmental risks are abundant, yet we continue to mask this atrocity behind statistics, and well
orchestrated advertising. As noted by RP Siegel of Triple Pundit Magazine (April 2012), Coal contains
the most CO2 per BTU, the largest contributor to global warming. Obviously, this should be enough to
convince the average, sensible individual that there is no more tolerance for continued MTM
practices. However, big mining companies continue to destroy delicate ecosystems, rural family lands,

slurry that is left behind, is then crudely covered with surrounding topsoil, and scattered with seeds.

book was published in 1932, and sold millions all over the world. The idea of the book was to
recognize that not all Native Americans are going to kill you, and that it could introduce the idea of
dreams with perceptive understandings. Standing Bear was in the room where the writing was taking

happened to be in Soliders Town where six bands of Ogalala tribes were there to hunt, and while they
were there the white men had threatened to hurt a little boy who had gone and cut off a part of their
flagpole. While this incident is happening, Red Cloud is trying to make peace with the white men so
they aren t enemies. In the book Black Elk talks says in the book That winter one of our boys climbed
the flagpole and chopped it off near the top. This almost made bad trouble; soldiers surrounded us
with their guns; but Red Cloud, who was living there, stood right in the middle without a weapon and
made speeches to the Wasichus and to us. (Neihardt 48) He talks about chiefs he saw that day, and
which ones he thought were pretty great, such as Crazy Horse and Red Cloud. He talked about the
Ogalala tribe and how they wanted to move places and hunt buffalo in a different area, and that was
why he was in Soldiers Town at the time. Black Elk speaks of another time when he had a vision
while he was away from his camp and he wasn t sure what to do at the time so he kept doing his thing.
He tells of a story he had with his father while they are out hunting, where he tells him to wait for the
animals to come to him and not chase the deer. He says Then the queer feeling came back, and I said
without knowing why I said it: No father, stay here; for they are bringing them to us. He looked at me
hard again, and said; All right son. So we lay down there in the grass and waited. They did come to us,

visions about animals and whatnot. Black Elk speaks of a time when he was young and fishing;

Remo argues that what people post social media is not portraying the truth to their daily lives. Social
media allows the individual to post a picture, video, status, and edit these to make it seem like their
lives are better than others. Social media allows the user to create their own TV channel and make
their lives seem better than they really are, (Remo). In addition to portraying a fake live, these posts

Damien Hirst s The On The Mind Of Someone Living
The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living is a piece that was created by the
artist Damien Hirst in the year 1992. In summary, it is a tiger shark that is preserved in a formaldehyde
solution in a case of glass and steel. The case is separated into three parts, which most likely is
because Hirst did not want the viewer to see and observe the piece as one whole dead shark. It is
thought that this steel casing breaks the continuity of the shark and therefore, becomes less
connectable as something familiar to the viewer. This shark is considered one of the most shocking
pieces of American art. This is because this shark, for many people, seems to be a direct representation
of death and is quite disturbing, and somewhat scary to look at, whether it be in person or in real life.
Therefore, the belief stands that this piece is more a form of science than a form of art. The artist of
the piece is Damien Hirst. Hirst is an English artist who was born in Bristol and moved to London
when he was 19 years old. Hirst was raised in a Catholic household, and even had an early religious
educational childhood. Later in his life, he pulls from this religious education as inspiration for his
works. He got his Bachelors of Arts in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths College in 1989, which he later
used to practice sculpture, painting, and drawing. After graduating, Hirst and his peers became part of

The rationale for including these students in high stakes tests it to hold them to the same high

schools use assessment measures that are aligned with their school goals and vision as well as with the
appropriate school curriculum. The goal is for students to feel as if they are significant part of the

The name Pre Raphaelite came from their opposition of the academy s promotion of the Renaissance
painter Raphael. Other inspirations came from art critic John Ruskin s encouragement to go to nature ,
believing art to be a serious subject that should be treated with maximum realism and truth.
The principal philosophies of their movement were primarily religious, but would often draw
inspiration from texts and literature, particularly those associated with death and love. In their
paintings, the Brotherhood created an entirely new manner of presenting human anatomy by imbuing
their depictions of men and women with medieval and spiritual ideas in which they were so
captivated. Its original members; John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel
Rosetti s work became heavily influential after great opposition at the beginning, and a second phase
of the movement occurred at around 1860 with particular works ¬¬¬¬majorly influencing the
succeeding Symbolism movement.
After a 1984 exhibition of the Pre Raphaelite s works at the Tate Gallery, a shift in the interpretation of
their work took place. Instead, analysis grew upon the subject of gender and sexuality when it came to

Pantheon of Rome and the Parthenon of Athens
Pantheon of Rome and the Parthenon of Athens
Introduction
Since the times of ancient Rome, there has been work of art including architecture. The invention of
architectural objects boosted the construction industry and among the results of architecture was
building of temples. Since the ancient people like the romans had beliefs in gods, they constructed
temples, places of worship. Among them were the Pantheon of Rome and the Parthenon of Athens.
Style of Pantheon of Rome and culture
The temple has a coffered concrete dome of which the romans believed that the temple was dedicated
to planetary deities. The pantheon had an Orb which was a simple of the universe and this showed the
supremacy of the emperor over the world. Additionally, there were also has seven niches for the altars
and statues. At that time there were seven well known planets. Also on the dome, it is seen a central
ring of the Oculus which is surrounded by 5 rings of coffers. These can be related to the heliocentric
view of the cosmos having the sun in the center and Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Venus and Moon around it.
Function of the Pantheon of Rome
Used for worshipping gods of ancient Rome. It is of great importance to note that the romans were
keen on astrology. Among the purposes of the Pantheon was that it was a temple cum planetarium
made to bring down the heavens to the earth and to then trap their perfection within the building and
cast a heavenly blessing on the Emperor s earthly power.

Greek Theater And Its Impact On The City State Of Athens
When considering ancient Greek life, theater was massively important. This is apparent by the Theater
of Dionysius placement in the city state of Athens, with its close proximity to the Acropolis and the
Parthenon. The Acropolis by definition meant the high point of the city state, and was on a plateau. Its
raised status highlights its importance, thus radiating that importance onto nearby structures as well.
Although the Greeks valued rational and reason, they also valued their emotional side as well. All
plays were dedicated to the god of emotion Dionysius. Much of what we know of the comedic aspects
of Hellenic Greek theater productions comes from the plays of the playwright Aristophanes.

with the upbringing of their children. In fact, they only had contact with their husbands for sexual
relation purposes. When the women finally arrive, Lysistrata inquires how many of their husbands are
gone away to war. Some of the women reply their husbands have been gone for months. Lampito, a
beautiful Spartan girl, expresses she is unhappy because her husband comes home and no sooner grabs
his shield and chargers off again. Though according to our textbook, Spartan women were free to

Igor Stravinsky Essay
Igor Stravinsky
In the passage by Igor Stravinsky, he uses not only comparison and contrast, but also language to
convey his point of view about the conductors of the time and their extreme egotism. Stravinsky
believes that conductors exploit the music for their own personal gain, so rather, he looks on them in a
negative light.
To show his aggravation and irritation, Stravinsky uses the rhetorical device of comparison and
contrast to convey his opinion of conductors. He compares the great conductors to great actors in that
[they] are unable to play anything but themselves . Moreover, being unable to adapt, they have to
adapt the work to themselves, not themselves to the work, which is obviously offending to a notable

This contrasts the motives of the composer and the conductor, which should be to keep the integrity of
the piece of music, but as mentioned above, Stravinsky believes that the conductor s are usually for
personal gain.
The negative point of view that Stravinsky has for the conductors is also revealed through the use of
language, literal and figurative language. Stravinsky uses both literal and figurative language because
they have the power to portray reality. In this piece, the word great is used sarcastically to show the
contrast between what the conductors think of themselves and what he thinks of them. They both are
reality, but reality to two different people, so using great in a sarcastic manner allows for both
Stravinsky s and the conductors interpretations of reality. In this case, the denotation and the
connotation are different, making them important. Here the denotation of the word great is wonderful,
majestic, and important, while the connotation is the exact opposite, ignoble, insignificant, and
inferior. Literal language tells the apparent truth, while figurative language tells the apparent truth it
also tells the indirect truth, making language important in this piece.
In conclusion, Stravinsky airs his annoyance and irritation of

The Social Aspect Of A Self Image
Introduction Oxford Dictionaries awarded the term Selfie as word of the year in 2013 and define this
phenomenon as a photograph that has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or web cam and

even had a song dedicated to this trend, symbolising of an era of youth culture. The bandwagon
mentality fashioned from this phenomenon of a popular trend, in effect attracts greater popularity as a
result of people doing something, not based on its merit, but based on what others do. The concept of
a self image is not a new idea as the involvement of self portraits pre dates the Internet and evolving
technology. Even the photo booth dates back as far as 1880, and attracted groups of friends much as it
does today . So it would be easy to argue that there was already a social aspect to controlling your

Polaroid cameras could be held at arm s length and encouraged people to take more intimate photos as

Elizabeth s father, her mother childhood consists of a great deal of traveling. Elizabeth informed the
interviewer one of the prominent contributions to this frequent movement consists of the rough period
Poland was in throughout her mother s childhood. Additionally, combined with this factor, Elizabeth s
mother transported to numerous countries because her father obtained an uncommon machine
operating license at the time. Therefore, Elizabeth s maternal family was often sent around due to
multiple construction jobs. In her childhood, Elizabeth s mother lived in France, Italy, and Africa
before returning to Poland. This made schoolwork and friendships

Their most fundamental mode of transportation was walking, a lot of their traveling was done on foot.
In the winter they would wear snowshoes to make walking easier and would have sleds or toboggans
to carry loads, which were carried by themselves or dogs, however not all bands had dogs. There were
two types of snowshoes, bear paw snowshoe was made to carry for weight and narrow snowshoes
were the easiest to walk in. The Plateau First Nations used dogs to hunt as well, while the Plain First
Nations would use horses, as they were very fast and could catch up to prey easily. They would also
use horses to transport people and items. To traveling on water First Nations would use canoes, some
of them would also build special ones like the Plateau

Public Relations -electronic Communications Essay
In order to confirm and find what electronic forms of communication will be needed in the Public
Relations field, heavy research was needed. I consulted not only books, but web sites as well. I wanted
to make sure that I had a complete assortment of sources that would be the most realistic and
comprehensive as possible. After sorting out my research, I came to these following conclusions:
1. Communications are widely used through out today s Public Relation firms.
2. Accessibility is the key to connecting with people in that field.
3. Teamwork is everything.
4. What is needed to run a successful business? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Are you going to just sit there and let that account go to another company? Or are you going to try to
get in touch with that client as soon as possible and try to keep their business? Let s add a twist to the
already hectic situation: You are currently in California, and your client is in Florida. The best thing to
do in this situation would be to call your client as soon as possible and then see if you need to catch a
flight out to Florida.
These questions are easily answered with this what will be the most productive way for you to ensure
you keep your client s business. No matter if it is a crisis, or just checking to make sure that they are
happy with the services you are providing them with, it is very important to stay in touch. This is
crucial in order to keep the business that you have worked so hard to gain. These days, most people
have cell phones attached to their bodies, so it is easier than it used to be to catch people when they
are on the go. But what do you do when the cell phone and voice mail aren t doing the job? Email
would be the answer to this question. No matter where you go these days, there seems to be more and
more accessibility to computers and the Internet (www.hallmark.com). A click, write a few sentences,
and pressing the send key is all you need to make sure your words are clear to who ever you are
sending them to. Especially if the cell phone

Conflict Managment
Managing Conflict in the Workplace
By LaQuita Watson
Current Issues in Human Resources
Dr. Overby
April 9, 2008
Conflict management refers to the long term management of intractable conflicts. It is the label for the
variety of ways by which people handle grievances standing up for what they consider to be right and
against what they consider to be wrong. Those ways include such diverse phenomena as gossip,
ridicule, lynching, terrorism, warfare, feuding, genocide, law, mediation, and avoidance. Some of the
forms of conflict management can be used in any given situation and can be somewhat predicted and
explained by the social structure or social geometry of the case. ... Show more content on

This ensures that job role doesn t conflict and no task falls in a crack. Make sure that there is a
relationship built with all subordinates. Try to meet at least once a month alone with them in your
office. Get on a personal level with them and ask about their accomplishments, challenges and issues.
Make a report of regular written status reports and include accomplishments, current issues and needs
from management and the plans for the upcoming period. One should always conduct basic training
about interpersonal communications, conflict management and delegation. Develop procedures for
routine tasks and include the employees input. For example have the employees write procedures
when possible and appropriate. Get the employees review of the procedures. Distribute the procedures
and train each employee on the procedure. Hold regular management meetings every month to
communicate new initiatives and status of current programs. Consider an anonymous suggestion box
in which employees can provide suggestions. (Mayer 85 93)
Conflict Management Techniques
There is no one best way to deal with conflict. It depends on the current situation. Some of the major
ways that people deal with conflict is that they avoid it. Pretending that conflict is not there can
usually harm a situation. Use this when it simply is not worth the effort to argue. Usually this
approach tends to worsen the conflict over time. Avoiding is

Stomach Acid Lab Report
This experiment investigates the effect of stomach acid at different pH levels on the solubility of
metformin hydrochloride tablets. According to my results, the metformin hydrochloride tablets
dissolved at a faster rate in the simulated stomach acid with less alcohol, and therefore, more acidic.
This conclusion, proves the hypothesis stated above. As predicted, the simulated acid with less traces
of alcohol was a more suitable environment for the medicine to dissolve at a faster rate. Consequently,
the tablets took a longer time to dissolve in the acid with a greater concentration of alcohol. In
consideration of the uncertainties, the two graphs above show that as the pH level increases and
becomes more basic, the amount of time for the tablets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When measuring out the substances for this experiment, an individual could get random errors when
slightly different values are collected each time they perform the measurement. Systematic errors, on
the other hand, are more difficult to detect but can be avoided if an individual looks for them with
care. A systematic error can occur in this experiment if the chemicals that are used are expired or when
the scales that are being used have been tampered with beforehand. Aside from random and systematic
errors, there are a few limitations in the design of this experiment. The use of small graduated
cylinders can provide inaccurate results for the experiment. Since the smaller cylinders can only hold
a small amount of acid, there is a possibility that the solutions can undergo supersaturation, when a
solution contains more of the dissolved material than could be dissolved by the solvent. In a case that
this happens, it would be difficult to predict when the tablet stop dissolving in the solution. Therefore,
due to the number of errors that could be made in this experiment, the results are a little unreliable
unless changes are made during the procedure and design of the lab set

Jim Crow Laws Vs Apartheid
As a result of the government mandated segregation, resistance in both the United States and South
Africa escalated. In other words, the history of the African civil rights movement taught: Nationalism
has been tested in the people s struggles . . . and found to be the only antidote against foreign rule and
modern imperialism (Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom 2008, 156). By comparing and contrasting the
Jim Crow Laws and apartheid, we are able convey that nationalism ultimately lead to activism and
reform. In both countries, the schism between Africans and their government worsened. To illustrate:
[The Emancipation Proclamation] ended [slavery] . . . , but blacks . . . had more in common with
African American slaves . . . than with the [Caucasian businessmen] (Bausum 2012, 19). For instance,
Congress passed the discriminatory Jim Crow Laws in order to establish a hierarchy based on the
plantation mentality (Bausum 2012, 14). For South Africans, the National Party (the Nats) in 1948,
made apartheid the official law. Both forms of segregation continued the cycle of poverty for coloured
people and ensured [that Caucasians had better quality education], hospitals, and other public services
(Rose 2011, 12). For example, African American garbage men s insufficient salary was based on their
garbage routes rather than an hourly wage (Bausum 2012, 14). Similarly, black South African staff
received inadequate pay and the law outlawed strikes and the formation of unions.

Stereotypes In Teen Films
Representations in a media text are the ways in which a film for example, portrays particular groups,
communities, experiences, ideas, or topics from a particular ideological or value perspective. The
representation of youth culture in teen movies has been studied and analysed at length. Youth culture
has become the focus of considerable critical debate. But while most of the recent work is compelling,
youth culture has proven to be an elusive target (Lewis, 1992). The ways in which the attitudes and
values of the characters are conveyed has created many subcultures and influenced many adolescents
throughout society, first, that teen film is defined most of all by its audience and second that whether
comic, angst ridden or violent, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

exploited this audience also recall the commodified youth culture ; commodified youth culture can be
described as youth and adolescence being reconstructed into objects and sold depending on the
representation required from them. They are used in the market of mainstream cinema and become
almost objects of desire for mass audiences. The mechanisms of commodification suppress and
objectify the liminal nature of teen spirit and create an endorsed and desirable youth market ; this
allows the expressing of teenagers in Hollywood movies to be ever more appealing due to the
exclusive profit which is

Federal Government Pros And Cons
On the other side of the issue, individuals in favor of the ruling claim that the federal government was
denying the 1st amendment rights of everyone s political speech. An American Spectator article writes
in favor of the court s ruling. Prior to the decision an individual such as George Soros is free to spend
$20 million to promote his favored candidates, but if two or more individuals get together to do the
same thing, neither can contribute more than $5,000 to the effort (Smith). Citizens United was simply
fighting for their constitutional rights to freedom of speech. During the oral arguments of the court,
Deputy Solicitor General Malcolm Stewart was asked by Justice Samuel Alito if the government s
current power over political campaigns would allow them to censor books made by corporations; he
responded with the statement that aligned with the government s position, yes they could. As a
politically active group, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another argument against the reform of campaign finances is the cost of a single election cycle for a
candidate. Even if everyone in America paid $3 in taxes, the fund would not be large enough to fund
more than one candidate. Referring back to the previous arguments against the problem of campaign
finances, the first amendment currently protects political speech, and the idea of public funded
elections might troublesome Constitutionalists. One final argument against public funding is the cost.
Elections are being paid for by people, why would Americans want to tax some of their hard earned
money to support someone they do not support. The money a taxpayer would put towards the public
fund would go to Republicans, Democrats, Green, Libertarians, and all various political party
members if they met the

Walker Ackoff (1969) Projects as open systems (identifying the project nature in systems terms) Systems thinking and project management evolved together from meeting the same challenges during the 1950s (Winch, 2010). The system approach helps to understand the complexity of the processes and the interrelationships with them. (Walker A. , 2015). Ackoff (1969) considers system as: An entity, conceptual or physical, which consists of interdependent parts. Each of a system s elements is connected to every other element, directly or indirectly, and no sub set of elements is unrelated to any other sub set . Walker (2007, p. 67) states that systems theory helps to explain how the project management process should be structured and hence how the various firms and ... Pooled interdependency means, that actors do not interact straightly, but contribute individual pieces to the whole. Even though they are not directly linked, their performance affects each other. Sequential interdependency has a serial form. There is the direct interdependency of units on each other: the output of the entity becomes the input for the followed one. Both parts make contributions to and are sustained by the whole. In case of reciprocal interdependency, the outputs of each become the inputs for the others, but not in a serial form. Each unit poses contingency for the other. Reciprocal interdependency has the highest level of complexity and dominates in construction projects, which shows the need for the highest level of integration. (Baccarini, 1996) Thompson (1967) suggests that sequential interdependency consists of the elements of pooled interdependency, whereas reciprocal interdependency embraces the elements of both pooled and sequential. This shows the links between the types of interdependence. The three types of interdependency have significant implications for how to achieve coordination in construction, as they imply that the actors must adjust and direct their activities and resources in and between numerous supply chains and numerous construction sites. These two words are closely related. I think morals and ethics should be followed. In the book The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald characters display immoral actions. The characters simply aren t bothered by some of their bad choices with work ethics, marriage, and common sense. In the book, good work ethics are poorly disregarded. Meyer Wolfsheim? • 6. Examples Of Tragedy In Death Of A Salesman American Tragedy Aristotle defines what a tragedy is in his famed piece Poetics. In it, he sets guidelines that all tragedies should meet in order to become the fantastic displays of misery that they are meant to be. Six main elements are present in every tragedy: plot, character, thought, diction, melody, and spectacle. The two most important, of course, were plot and character. Both had to be complex but believable, consistent, and possess the ability to arouse pity and fear in the audience. Although both are the top elements that are the focus of tragedy, the other four are imperative to achieve the tone and overall character of one. In Death of A Salesman by Arthur Miller, the character Willy Loman is an average modern American man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More than that, he wanted to become that man that he admired who died the death of a salesman in his green velvet slippers whose funeral garnered many loving friends and family (Miller 81). Audiences can relate as they too have had an idol in their head that they have aspired to become. Seeing the aspirations of Willy warrants pity in the audience when they see what a failure Willy Loman becomes. Failure is what consumes Willy. He understands that that is his life. But in his deep deluded mind twisted with broken memories and false hopes he can never truly accept it. He never has that point of discovery that a tragic hero does. Willy Loman never realizes the doom waiting for him at the end of his downward spiral. Even his attempts at suicide, and finally his one successful one, were misguided and were attempts to become something greater. No one shows up at the funeral besides his family. He is not great like a tragic hero. Willy Loman is a nobody, he is only a tragic hero to himself, just like everyone in the audience. Everyone sings the song of their own tragedy . That is the American tragedy. Everyone is the American tragic hero with their own tragedy. Arthur Miller captures the Average man with the average family and average dreams, living an average life with no gain in the end. Many people argue that Death of a Salesman should fall under the genre of tragedy. They argue that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The siege of Leningrad was a prolonged military blockade by the German army against the Soviet Union during World War Two on the city of Leningrad. It started on the 8 of September 1941 with the German army blocking all roads to Leningrad, this was to block anything from coming in or out of Leningrad as the German forces want to starve the Russian forces and people of communication, food and water. The historical importance of the The Siege of Leningrad must never be forgotten for many reasons. One of these reasons being the cruelty it shows, as during the siege the German army killed millions of innocent people in a very cruel way, showing us that even our enemy are still human. • 8. The Most Significant Moment In My Life We all have that moment in life that changes us in some ways. I think back at events in my life, as an example the births of my children that caused me to grow into a mother and the woman I am today. However, there is a moment in my life, after my children, I was psychologically lost. This moment changed my life forever! I was married for thirteen years with five children. During these thirteen years, I would be the head of the house hold and ensured structure in the house. My husband at the time, was an addict and in/out of prison. We attempt counseling and all types of treatment. The last six years together, we were very involved in church. My faith in God grew and I believed my husband could be delivered from this addition. I had to be the strong one in the family, the rock, the foundation of our house to give the perception to people we were okay. After trying everything possible, I realized, only he can be in recovery of addiction, I cannot make him. I had to make the decision to break up my family for the safety of my children. After my separation, I became angry. My faith was questionable, and I was angry at God. My family was torn, we lived with a friend in a small room. My step children had to live with their mom because I could not afford to keep them. I no longer felt strong, or had structure in my house. The feeling of failure and the mourning of the loss of my family was overwhelming. I began to drink alcohol every day. My daily routine would consist of going to work and as soon as I got out I would stop and get a Smirnoff Black, go home, cook for the three kids, leave work out, drink and go out, go home at two am. The next six months, I did not care about anything or anyone. I allowed these feelings to consume me. In September 2013, the first week, I was driving drunk, I swerved and ran my mirror in to the wall. The second week, I was drunk and could not leave the parking lot of a club, until the following morning. The third week, I was driving drunk to a friend s house, and I remember fighting with him at the door way, and he asked me to leave. • 9. Argumentative Essay On Abortion In medicine, abortion is the premature exit of the products of conception (the fetus, fetal membranes, and placenta) from the uterus. It is the loss of a pregnancy and does not refer to why the pregnancy was lost (https://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=2091). Abortion is a very contentious issue and the attitude towards it has always been and is still very controversial. It has caused uncounted deaths and violent confrontations between the supporters of the two separate parties. Pro life supporters advocate that everyone has the right to life, even Fetus, and Pro choice supporters argue that the right to abortion is absolute. In Abortion, No more Apologies, Katha Pollitt states abortion as a normal part of a woman s reproductive life, one that should be accepted as a moral right and a fundamental choice with positive social implications. In this article, Pollitt takes on the personhood argument by reaffirming the personal right and choice of a woman to control her own body. She talked about how the abortion subject has always been in the shadow. She gave the example of her mother that had an abortion but never told her about it, and she only knew about from some papers after her mother s death. Nobody knew about the abortion that her mom had, not even her mom s best friend. She pointed to the psychological and even physiological dangers of unwanted pregnancies that necessitate the legalization of abortion. An unintended pregnancy is so stressful for women, as is the process of making a decision regarding its outcome. The fear that accompanies the idea of abortion or the complications that might occur after the procedures, are considered as major negative effects on women s health. She heartedly defended abortion as a right similar to education. A woman who can choose her major and her career can make her own decision about keeping her pregnancy or not. To criminalize abortion is to go back to where we were in the 50 s, to the tremendous amount of illegal abortions, which was extremely dangerous. She aimed in her comparison between women in the past and currently, to explain how legalization of abortion changed how women are seeing themselves now: mothers by choice, not by ... That s about seven hundred eighty times the amount it cost to diagnose and treat sexually transmitted diseases in the year 2000 (Chesson). The sole purpose of this is not to persuade you one way or the other on this topic. Nor is the purpose to apologize for this social issue. The purpose of this writing is to employ data showing the societal effects parental addictions have on children, to show how this data has remained relevant in society, and to show how it is affecting our future members of society. In this paper, I look at forms of substance abuse and the effects on children. I will be using the following headings to break down the different issues associated with this social problem: social causes, phenomenon, and consequences. I hope to educate those that may be ignorant to the situation, and help to spark a flame that can be used to not be a bystander, but a solution to the problem at hand. Social Causes An estimated twenty five percent of youth under eighteen are exposed to familial alcohol abuse (Bellum). The Illinois Department of Human Services says that nearly six hundred seventy five thousand children per year suffer serious abuse or neglect as a direct result of substance abuse ( Children ). Throughout British proprietary colonization of the Americas, there were many different motives for claiming American soil by those whom were audacious enough to consider the prospect of funding a distant statehood. Penn claimed to see his colony as a holy experiment (page XIII); who differed from its peers in the respect that it had intent to provide refuge to those whom faced religious persecution, even so, the devout Quaker, eventually allowed to fall into a state of neglect and sink to the level of its peers. When Penn received his charter from Charles II he saw further potential for and many probable afforded opportunities for personal gain from establishing dominion over territories over one of the many virgin lands in one of the new worlds. Penn s ledger from the throne implanted the idea of escaping his own previously established personal debts, as well as enlarging his overall holdings in real estate and land, especially one not subject to the high taxes and economic cost which land in mainland England cost at the time. When Penn received his ledger, the idea of establishing a land of religious tolerance for all those persecuted by those less open minded in the east seemed a very appealing thought to many. Penn, however, knew that he had a far better chance of obtaining American real estate than English. He recognized his charter as a means of enlarging his property holdings and his way out of personals debt (page 122). The devastation left in the wake of mans pursuit to satisfy his insatiable greed for energy, is nothing shy of a brutal crime scene. I feel, like many others, it has got to be stopped, and replaced with a more sensible, and appropriate, appetite for energy. The severe health, and environmental risks are abundant, yet we continue to mask this atrocity behind statistics, and well orchestrated advertising. As noted by RP Siegel of Triple Pundit Magazine (April 2012), Coal contains the most CO2 per BTU, the largest contributor to global warming. Obviously, this should be enough to convince the average, sensible individual that there is no more tolerance for continued MTM practices. The original book was published in 1932, and sold millions all over the world. The idea of the book was to recognize that not all Native Americans are going to kill you, and that it could introduce the idea of dreams with perceptive understandings. While this incident is happening, Red Cloud is trying to make peace with the white men so they aren t enemies. He talked about the Ogalala tribe and how they wanted to move places and hunt buffalo in a different area, and that was why he was in Soldiers Town at the time. • 30. Damien Hirst s The On The Mind Of Someone Living The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living is a piece that was created by the artist Damien Hirst in the year 1992. In summary, it is a tiger shark that is preserved in a formaldehyde solution in a case of glass and steel. The case is separated into three parts, which most likely is because Hirst did not want the viewer to see and observe the piece as one whole dead shark. It is thought that this steel casing breaks the continuity of the shark and therefore, becomes less connectable as something familiar to the viewer. This shark is considered one of the most shocking pieces of American art. This is because this shark, for many people, seems to be a direct representation of death and is quite disturbing, and somewhat scary to look at, whether it be in person or in real life. Therefore, the belief stands that this piece is more a form of science than a form of art. The artist of the piece is Damien Hirst. Hirst is an English artist who was born in Bristol and moved to London when he was 19 years old. Hirst was raised in a Catholic household, and even had an early religious educational childhood. Later in his life, he pulls from this religious education as inspiration for his works. The principal philosophies of their movement were primarily religious, but would often draw inspiration from texts and literature, particularly those associated with death and love. In their paintings, the Brotherhood created an entirely new manner of presenting human anatomy by imbuing their depictions of men and women with medieval and spiritual ideas in which they were so captivated. By comparing and contrasting the Jim Crow Laws and apartheid, we are able convey that nationalism ultimately lead to activism and reform. In both countries, the schism between Africans and their government worsened. To illustrate: [The Emancipation Proclamation] ended [slavery] . . . , but blacks . . . had more in common with African American slaves . . . than with the [Caucasian businessmen] (Bausum 2012, 19). For South Africans, the National Party (the Nats) in 1948, made apartheid the official law. Both forms of segregation continued the cycle of poverty for coloured people and ensured [that Caucasians had better quality education], hospitals, and other public services (Rose 2011, 12).
