Despite efforts to avoid the threats to validity of evaluation apprehension and experimenter
expectancies (Parker, 1990), they cannot be ruled out. The questionnaire is clearly asking the
students opinion of Duolingo. Despite the assurance of anonymity, in an effort to appear to be a
good student, a responder might have exaggerated their love of learning vocabulary, and the use of
Duolingo in particular. To avoid the influence of experimenter expectancies, it is recommended that
the individuals administering the treatment be unaware of the purposes of the study (Parker, 1990).
It would seem wise to extend this to individuals interacting with participants during questionnaires
and interviews, but this precaution was not

A music genre is a category of pieces of music that share...
A music genre is a category of pieces of music that share a certain style or basic musical language
(van der Merwe 1989, p.3). The two articles that I will be comparing are Genres, Subgenres, Sub
Subgenres and More by Kembrew McLeod (2001) and On the Value of Popular Music by S. Firth
(1996). Categorizing musicis especially challenging when it comes to fitting it into sub genres. As
we move through the ages, and technology and communication becomes more complex, newer and
unique genres are emerging. At first glance the more specific subgenres cause dispute and thoughts
of hipster emerge. Nonetheless, upon further inquiry, each of them makes cultural sense to be part
of our ever growing society. The two articles that I will be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This creates bias, as it is not the same with male artists. Nevertheless, he discusses it is not definite
and that valid decisions in relation to popular music can be confusing as preferences are subject to

will entail. It is genre rules which determine how musical forms are taken to convey meaning and
value, which determine the aptness of different sorts of judgment which determine the competence

and individual notions.
McLeod, Kembrew (2001) in his article Genres, Subgenres, Sub Subgenres and More identifies
Firth s opinion on how popular music and genres being constructed must be viewed with a
commercial/cultural process . McLeod focusing mainly on the Electronic/Dance genre, makes an
adamant claim that introduction of new subgenre names into electronic/dance music communities
is equalled by no other type of music thus that genre has been the biggest growing. Like Firth
(1996), McLeod projects the idea of gender in music implying women as the minority relative to
genre. The overwhelming majority of musical artists in the electronic/dance music scenes in the late
1980s and the 1990s were male. Men have been in important positions

Compare and Contrast Essay of the Opening Scenes of Tim Burton s Corpse Bride and The

This essay compares and contrasts the similarities and the different parts of the opening scenes of

1.Introduction
Information about Tim Burton and his unique style
Famous for his unique style, Timothy Walter Burton was born on August 25, 1958, in Burbank,
California. As a child, Burton had no interest in the normal education. His world was about art,

Tim Burton s Unique Style/Burtonesque
Just like in his previous movies, in both The Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas, it
is very clear to find Burton s own signature. People have frequently contrasted Burton s style with
the gothic. The utilization of dark, the dimness of some of his illustrations, the overwhelming
make up, the whiteness of the skins, beasts and other spooky animals review Gothic writing and
works of art yet, in addition, German Expressionism. The topic of death is ubiquitous in Burton s
specialty regularly joined with verse and ridicule. The shocking end up noticeably funny and
beautiful. He discovers motivation in the creators he adores like Edgar Allan Poe and Roald Dahl.
He appreciates them for the unpredictability of their stories and the many sided quality of their
universes a long way from being recently highly contrasting. They are both entertaining and dull
and near Burton s own particular style.
A world brimming with logical inconsistencies, both dull and light, startling and inviting,
merciless and delicate. A world where obscurity lives together with splendid hues, where strange
looking individuals and creatures are overcome and liberal and where the terrible ends up plainly
wonderful. Tim Burton has his own style that remaining parts incomparable and his lavishness has
turned out to be to a great degree famous. His world is such a

In today s world violence, chaos, and death has become too common and too redundant. It seems
as though every day there is a new story in the newspaper about police brutality , the corruptions
of society , and civil wars within developing countries. Despite the fact that we can easily look up
information about the daily traditions and values of different cultures around the world we fail
to do so. The lack of knowledge about other people and societies ,besides our own, causes a
shallow understanding of why people do the things we hear and see in the headlines. This magnet

Often times the person writing the new story is unable to give a full representation of the
situation at hand simply because they do not have the experiences of someone who has actually
been a part of the group of people that were affected. Is the person writing the story has studied
the culture and rituals of the people they will be able to give a clearer understanding of the
story.Today many news stories are given from the point of view of someone on the outside
looking in. However, I believe if they were written by someone who understood the culture of
the people group they are talking about they could turn it into a story that is looking from the
inside out. When people read a story that is in the perspective of the people that are experiencing
changes, because of this I believe readers differently towards the dilemma at hand. For example,
many people want to migrate from Syria into America because of all the chaos in their
homeland. Many Americans, however feel that taking in Syrian refugees could be dangerous
because they could possibly be a terroristic threat to America. I believe people feel this way
because they have not been exposed to the fight that every Syrian is forced to grapple through
every day. Most of the articles about Syrian refugees fail to recognize

In 1517, Luther created a document for debate with the church. The document, known as the
Ninety five Theses, outlined what Luther saw were discrepancies between the actions of the
church and what Scripture teaches. He nailed the paper to the door of the Castle Church in
Wittenburg on October 31, 1517. Albert, the Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg, received a
copy of the document the same day. (McKim 8) The church proceeded to charge Luther with
heresy and over the course of the next three years, he faced several panels. Finally, in 1520, the
pope excommunicated Luther and fearing for his life, Luther went into hiding. During this time,
Luther married a former nun named Katharina von Bora. During 1524 1526, Luther came out of
hiding to oppose a revolt lead by the peasants in Germany which the other Protestant clergy
supported.
Finally, during 1531 1546 Luther s health began to wane. Luther was busy struggling with the
conflict which was developing in the Reformation movement. As time progressed, his writings
became more judgmental of other people. Toward the end of his life, his writings became anti
Semitic, calling for the deportation of all Jews from Germany. On February 17, 1546, Luther felt
chest pains after completing settlement negotiations; he died the next day.

The fourth truth is to be brought into being, the truth of the eightfold ariya path leading to the
cessation of suffering. (Robinson)
The first two steps in the Eightfold Path, which leads to the cessation of suffering, are right
understanding and right resolution; a person must first discover and experience the correctness of
the Four Noble Truths, and then resolve to follow the correct path. The next three steps form a kind
of unit: right speech, right behavior, and right livelihood. These reflect the external aspects of a
person s life, which must not be neglected. The interior disciplines constitute the final three steps:
right efforts, right mindfulness, and right contemplation. By this means, the follower of Buddha

western religions do. They do believe in reincarnation: the concept that one must go through many
cycles of birth, living and death. After many of these cycles, if a person releases their attachment

Incident Command Systems Essay
As fall began in 1970, California had experienced practically no rainfall for many months,
humidity levels dropped to being practically non existent, and the earth was scored from the
raging summer heat (Rowley, n.d.). These conditions provided ample fuel for a wildfire that
would burn for 13 days before being beaten back and extinguished by firefighters. Initially, it
appeared controlling the fire spread would be done easily and quickly. However, multiple fires
spawned rapidly into large fires that overwhelmed the local resources. Lack of communication,
communication and application of skill became quickly evident as a major flaw in the control and

Essentially, an Incident Command Systems provides the basis of information in which the local,
regional, or state response organization use to control the efficiency and functionality of response to
an event or disaster. ICS encompasses five major systems which are, command, operations,
planning, logistics and finance (Haddow, et. al., 2013). There are also three types of Incident
Command: single, unified and area. A Single Incident Command involves one area, with one event,
and one Incident Commander. Unified Command involves an event that spans jurisdictional
boundaries and, therefore, warrants involvement of multiple Incident Command Systems and
communication and coordination between respective Incident Commanders. Area Command spans,
or has potential to, a very large area, such as a public health emergency as suggested by Haddow,
Bullock and Coppola (n.d.). Since its development, the ICS has proven to be a useful and valuable
tool in emergency management. By following guidelines established within an ICS, individual and

emergency events. The continued use of the Incident Command Systems will aid in the success,

importance of the Confessions as a philosophical work. I will analyze Augustine s view of God

The Confessions is divided into thirteen books. I will focus my analysis on the first ten books,
which are his autobiography. The other three books are important but they do not have to do
with his life story. The book expresses three main concerns. One is Augustine s frank and
detailed acknowledgment of his personal sinfulness and the power he came to recognize as God
s provident grace protective, creative, salvific in every moment of his life. He also wrote in
order to confess his own Christian faith and clearly repudiate any supposed lingering connections
on his part with Manichaeism. Finally, The Confessions are a heartfelt paean of praise and
thanksgiving in honor of God s glory. Augustine begins his autobiography with a prayer and
meditation. This is fitting because the main theme of The Confessions is to praise and thank
God. He begins by saying that God has, made us and drawn us to yourself, and our heart is
unquiet until it rests in you. This is a very good point because it is a reflection of Augustine s
struggle to find piece with himself. Throughout the rest of the book Augustine is constantly
changing his beliefs and looking for the truth, his heart is restless. And it is not until he finds the
Catholic faith and has his conversion that he finds piece. Augustine like all philosophers is a lover
of truth. He is unsure how he should call upon the Lord (3). He points out that it is his faith,

Brutus is a devoted friend of Caesar and since they are such trusty friends, Brutus can lead
Caesar to Cassius s trap without speculating anything because he thinks Brutus is noble to him.
Once Cassius gets what he wants, Brutus to be on his side, they and some others begin to plan
how they will get to Caesar and kill him. Then when Brutus agrees to join the conspiracy to
annihilate Caesar, it is the beginning of him becoming the villain. He is still the hero though; he
only joined the conspiracy for the good of Rome. This was the noblest Roman of them all. / All
the conspirators save only he / Did that they did in envy of great Caesar. / He only in a general
honest thought / And common good to all, made one of them (V.v.68 72). This quote is said by
Antony at the end of the play. In that scene, he and Caesar s adopted son, Octavius have seen
Brutus s dead body. They have seen the good in Brutus and have noticed that he has acted out of
his love for Rome. ...not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more (III.ii.21). That was
part of the speech Brutus gave to the citizens after he and the other conspirators killed Caesar.
This was the last act Brutus did before he started becoming more of a villain. This quote and the
quote Antony says at the end of the play are the same. They both are saying how Brutus didn t
really want to kill Caesar. He just felt like he had no choice, he saw that what Caesar was doing
was changing Rome.

Episthropology, And Epistemology
Research Philosophies
There are two main subdivisions of research philosophies; ontological and epistemological research
philosophies. Ontology involves using a nature perspective to establish how things work. On the
other hand, epistemology involves assessing the interaction between the knowledge of the inquirer
and the research (Saunders, Lewis, Thornhill, 2009). The nature of reality can thus be determined
by reviewing the four primary research philosophies that are based on epistemology and ontology.
The four primary research philosophies include pragmatism, realism, positivism, and interpretivism.

objectives of reality. According to the ontology... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this case, researchers use information that is already available and accessible to the public. Such
information is retrieved from governmental institutions, companies, and other researchers (Kumar,

is that it is cheaper than primary research. Secondly, secondary researches and their findings are

Rhetoric In Socrates The Gorgias
The Gorgias is a dialogue in which Socrates expresses his ideas with others about rhetoric. From
the dialogue, it can be argued that the philosopher is a mortal enemy of rhetoric. He condemns it on
ethical and epistemic grounds. Socrates argues that rhetoric is not a real knowledge because it is
not a legitimate art, and that the teachers of rhetoricare nothing but fraudsters. In addition, he
asserts that rhetoric is ethically bankrupt and its main objective is to gratify the ignorant and
enhance its experts power to practice it. It tends to manipulate ignorant individuals into believing on
imaginative things. Therefore, Socratesargues that it is not real art, because a real art should depict
a purified rationalism and knowledge that maintains the changeless good. As a result, Socrates
draws a sharp line between rhetoric and real art or knowledge.
In his argument with Polus, Socrates seems to provide a level ground for both charges against
rhetoric. Socrates asserts that rhetoric is an emperia and a knack based experience. It is a piece
of flattery whose objective is to gratify and provide pleasure, and that it degenerates ethically

Home Schooling Is A Good Idea
You may be asking yourself, how did home schooling begin? What was it like? Well, in the 1970
s and the 1980 s home schooling began to spark. A few parents question whether public or
private school was right for their child. They were thinking they could do a better job. Well, what
do you know; parents learned they could do a better job. However, some states, prohibited home
schooling. If parents or guardians were home schooling, they could face jail time as well as losing

Coyote and Bear
The Native American tale of Coyote and Bear , originally translated from oral tradition in
nineteen six by G. A. Dorsey in the book The Pawnee, Mythology, Part I, tells us the story of
Coyote who accidentally meets Bear, and in order to protect himself from being killed by Bear,
starts to make up self praising stories to impress Bear. Eventually, Coyote convinces Bear, but
after a few hesitant moves, Bear realizes that Coyote was lying. The tale then, ends up with the
murder of Coyote by Bear. The most relevant literary figure used in the tale is the trickster, which
is, in the study of folklore, a god, a spirit, or simply a human hero who breaks godВґs or natureВґs
rules, sometimes with bad intention, but usually with final positive... Show more content on

Nature has been cheated by the outstanding abilities of Coyote. However, the situation does not
end like that. The forces of nature triumph once again in order to show a tale s moral. Bear acts in
a more natural way. He finally concludes the cycle that his character was intended for, but not
before showing an initial naГЇve personality. This situation creates a first impression on the reader
/listener, implying that good convincing skills can defeat what is naturally expected to happen.
However, and with full intention of developing a tale moral, these convincing skills only take
effect on a temporary basis. The message this tale wants to issue is that nature might be unaware
for some time, but at the end, it always defeats any intention of shortcutting the life cycle. This
moral is among the most usual used in Native American coyote stories, which were normally told
to audiences of young and old people alike. They were sometimes told to teach about cosmology,
as instructional stories for the young, to explain history, and sometimes just for the sake of telling
and listening to a funny story. In all these different cases, Coyote stories are a reflection for our
own lives, pointing out the smallest miseries and the biggest strengths of humans. Unfortunately for
him, in the present tale, Coyote serves as the example of a negative attitude, which finally always
leads to a tragic end. A different approach to the trickster tradition in Native American oral

King Alfred the Great Essay
King Alfred the Great
King Alfred the Great was born at Wantage, in 849, on a royal manor of his father s holding, a
family estate which long afterward he himself would leave in legacy to his wife. Alfred was the
youngest of five children, four sons and a daughter, born to Ethelwulf by his wife Osburh. When
Alfred was four years old, his father, the king, who by now had long despaired of getting to
Rome in the present state of things, decided to send Alfred there, to at least receive the blessing
of the Holy Father. The pope at the time, Leo the IV, gave Alfred the blessing to become king.
Alfred s time came in the year mid April 871, when King Г†thelred died. Only a king of full age
could defend the land, and although Г†thelred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Alfred was not content with being on the defensive. He also attacked the Danish held
City of London in an attempt to diminish the lands ruled under Dane law (Bruce 4). No Anglo
Saxon king was ever strong enough to coerce a recalcitrant peasantry. Except Alfred who
decided to allow half the men liable for service to remain at home while the other half was out
against the Danes (Stenton 261). In order for Alfred to keep peace and defeat the Danes, he had to
win many major battles. On Easter Sunday 878, when King Alfred withdrew into the Isle of
Athelney, there was every likelihood that before the end of the year Wessexwould have been
divided out among the members of the Danish army. King Alfred made sure that Wessex would
escape that fate. Although Alfred did lose a major battle against the Danes only four years ago,
he overcame them in 878 when he won the Battle of Edington. Alfred showed strong resistance
by constantly engaging Danish raiding parties from his base in Athelney. After nearly seven
weeks of strong battles, Alfred was able to begin defeating the Danes (Stenton 253). Along with
Alfred s idea of coercing a recalcitrant peasantry, he had other ways of defeating the Danes as
well. Alfred began building warships in order to develop a navy. The ships in which Alfred built
were twice as long as those which they were intended to meet (Stenton 253). These

Jerry Lewis Analysis
Citric of the critic a critical thought.
In both of the articles referring to Lewis neither make very good arguments in my opinion, which
is the point/goal of many critics: to gain (or at least appeal to) an audience that has their point of
views and to establish a reputation as a writer and a critic which develops a following and
somehow makes them qualified to tell their readers what is good and/or bad. Both articles take
the stance of stereotyping cultures and what they think when it comes to Jerry Lewis. Stereotyping
is a problem in the world, something which I feel is the point of many critics but does not sit well

How the French view American males during the time is not the fault of Lewis. His work was
appealing to the French (and many American movie goers) because he was making comedies to
lighten the mood of the times. From the information in both articles an argument for or against
Lewis got lost and became more about how American critics perceived the French interpretation
of Lewis as an auteur. That is the French were more impressed with Lewis because of his style in
presenting the topics within his films. American critics seemed to be appalled that Lewis was the
French s perception of what American male life was like. However, Is it ok that Americans think
of the French as all having berets, wearing black and white striped shirts, riding bikes with

Evolution Vs Creationism Research Paper
Evolution vs Creationism
As we all grew up under the guidance and knowledge of our own parents, we had been slowly
molded to accept certain beliefs, while rejecting others. We were also taught to think creatively
and question what we were taught, even from them. The status quo is always changing and
evolving and the problem we find in today s society is that sometimes we see and hear things and
immediately take them as fact, or even repetitively until we believe them as fact with no evidence
to back those things up. In my opinion, we have lost the ability to, not only think for ourselves, but
to truly question the mass amount of knowledge we consume on a daily basis. I feel that this has a
similar effect on the conversation about evolution ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As I grew older and learned about evolution my beliefs were strongly challenged with no merit.
The problem I had with both scenarios was that they are both THEORIES. A good example of
me questioning what these theories actually meant is when I went through grade school, the
pledge of allegiance had been removed because it had the word God in it. As a young child I
questioned the fact of why I couldn t say it in school. Later on, as I entered high school, our class
had scratched the surface on evolution and I wondered why we were not taught creationism as well,
and why we were not allowed to make our own decision of what we were being taught throughout
school. According to a Gallup poll of 1,016 U.S. adults about 45 percent of those surveyed favored
the statement God created human beings in their present form within the last 10,000 years (Fitch
1). If the survey showed an almost even split of both theories then why are we forced to learn only
evolution in schools? Scientists and science educators have concluded that evolution should be
taught in science classes because it is the only tested, comprehensive, scientific explanation for
the nature of the biological world today that is supported by overwhelming evidence and widely
accepted by the scientific community (National Academy of Sciences 53). As a society that has
proven itself wrong time and time again how can we for sure say the Big Bang theory is where
our ancestors came from and everything around us came to be? The problem with religion is that
there are many of them and they each have their own opinions. If creationism were to be taught in
schools, it would be too complex to tailor a way for it to be accepted by every one of them. In this
conflict of interest, the final

Baroque Era Research Paper
In the early Middle Ages, the human voice, God s creation within us, had been regarded in the
sacred realm as being the only instruments we needed. The church considered the use of instruments
as profane. There was no musical notation as songs were passed along from person to person by
rote memorization. In the secular world, instruments were used at times by jongleurs, trouveres, and
minnesingers. Some of those early instruments include the vielle, harp, psaltery, flute, shawm,
bagpipe, and drums (Thomas et al.). Those instruments were most likely used in an accompaniment
capacity, but since musical notation in the secular world was not really happening during this
period, not a lot of concrete information is really known about instrumental... Show more content on

The forces grew in size and became more widely used across many genres of music. Composers
such as Bach built large works that included many instruments to go along with vocalists. The
Opera, setting a play completely to music, emerged and used many instruments as accompaniment.
A basso continuo was the early rhythm section in the Baroque period which included a keyboard
instrument such as harpsichord, organ or clavichord and a bass instrument such as cello, violone, or
bassoon. Figured bass notation was written with interval numbers above a bass line to tell the
keyboardist what intervals to use to build the chords. Bach s Flute Sonata in C Major, BWV 1033
is an example of this technique with one melodic line on the top staff with a single bass line with
numbers underneath in the second bass clef staff. Instrument making techniques also improved
with technology during this period which allowed instrument makers to streamline their processes
and create instruments faster and for less money. This made instrument buying even more
affordable and proliferated the spread instruments around Europe (Westrup

The term reward can be broken up into three separate components: wanting, liking, and learning.
Liking is defined as the actual pleasure component or hedonic impact of a reward. Wanting is
defined as motivation for reward, which includes both (1) incentive salience wanting processes
that are not necessarily conscious and (2) conscious desires for incentives or cognitive goals.
Lastly learning is defined as associations, representations, and predictions about future rewards
based on past experiences (Kringelbach and Berridge 2008). I like the way this paper breaks up
the term reward because it causes you to actually think about which parts of the brain correspond
with each defined term. This paper goes on to talk about how with each component of reward lies a
conscious and unconscious process. Something I found that stuck out was how the paper addresses
the challenges the brain possesses with respect to rewards. The paper states The primary challenge
is to identify which brain systems mediate pleasure versus other components of reward and to map
components correctly onto their own neural substrates (Fig. 1).
This challenge is difficult because a rewarding stimulus or event will elicit many or all of these
reward components simultaneously and so activate many brain systems at the same time
(Kringelbach and Berridge 2008). I see why this can be frustrating. The brain is quite intriguing but
it is also confusing.

number of books. This universal idea about development in people is also depicted in literary

The death of emperor Hideyoshi and subsequent ascension to the throne of Hideyori in 1598 set
into motion events that would alter the political landscape in Japan for the next two hundred and
fifty years. Tokugawa Ieyasu, in his quest to become absolute ruler of Japan defeated Hideyori
loyalists in the battle of Sekigahara and was appointed Shogun by Hideyori in 1603. This military
coup d Г©tat effectively gave Tokugawa complete control of Japan and reduced the emperor to little

The primary beneficiaries of the emerging money economy were the merchants. Daimyo and
samurai traded their rice for money with the merchants who soon became very rich. Merchants,
cashing in on daimyo debt attained positions of authority within the daimyo households. Many
were living lavish lifestyles only dreamt of by samurai. This caused resentment in Japanese society
because, although they were socially inferior, merchants enjoyed an elevated status economically
(Kunihiko 1997). Perhaps the social class that suffered the most indignities was the samurai who,
lacking the means to earn a living on their regular income, indulged in the lifestyle of Edo. Many
had to resort to engaging in handicraft for income vice training at the martial arts thus leading to
inherent corruption (Nobumitsu 1997).
Ultimately, the Tokugawa shogunatewanted to maintain political and social stability in Japan. By
seizing power, Ieyasu was able to quell domestic unrest but another threat was still presented for
total control. Foreign influence proved to be a serious threat to stability within Japan. The initial
threat to Japan was presented by Christian missionaries. After an initial introduction to Christianity,
the shogunate conducted a purging and outlawed the religion. This led to a prolonged isolation of
Japanese society from Western influence. The shogunate wished to prevent daimyo from conspiring
with foreigners thus

The Pros And Cons Of Insanity Defense
1. Incorporating the assumptions of one of the below learning theories (also feel free to research
the online library, Internet etc for information on these two theories), make an argument either for
or against the insanity defense, that is, should it be allowed and or abolished...and specifically why?
2. Do you believe that ecological approaches have a valid place in contemporary criminological
thinking? Specifically...why or why not?
Insanity Defense should be abolished in that it serves as an excuse for criminals to get away with
crime and as such, it should be abolished. This opinion is similar to those echoed by other scholars.
For instance, Perlin (2016) noted that if the government is sincere about protecting the public, then
the mental condition of the individual at the time the crime is committed is immaterial. Currently, a
lot of time is wasted during trials with psychiatrists running scenarios of what might be wrong with
the accused.
Secondly, it is interesting to realize that in all the insanity defense cases, the defense psychiatrist
always says the accused is insane while the prosecution psychiatrist always maintain that the
accused is sane. The consistency of this trend rules out the laws of chance, thus leaving the whole
approach as a victim of manipulation from either the prosecution or defense side. This shows that
the insanity defense can be manipulated by either side so as to serve their own interest. In most
cases, the insanity defense is normally used

In the Skin of a Lion, by Michael Ondaatje
In the novel, In the Skin of a Lion, by Michael Ondaatje, the main character, Patrick Lewis,
searches for identity and light. Without these elements, he lacks love and cannot survive the world.
A passage in chapter three describes him as a lonely man that is isolated from the world around
him. Clara and Ambrose and Alice and Temelcoff and Cato this cluster made up a drama without
him. And he himself was noting but a prism that refracted their lives. He searched out things, he

He has no purpose in life; he just searches. The thing that he is looking for is light. This ambiguous
concept of light Ondaatje presents throughout the novel is not ordinary light, but one that
illuminates the void of darkness. Just like the moths that Patrick is intrigued by that only tend
toward light at night, Patrick only seeks light when there is none around him. Patrick continues his
eternal search for light because he has none of his own to emit.
The central theme behind many stories is the loss and regaining of identity. Patrick has no
identity of his own, and his only way of gaining a temporary one is through light. And he himself
was nothing but a prism that refracted their lives. (Ondaatje, pg.157) A prism, by definition,
refracts light into a spectrum of colors. Correspondingly, Patrick contorts other characters
identities as his own. The readers are introduced to this concept of reflecting light even before the
novel begins. This is indicated by, (D)riving the four hours to Marmora under six stars and a
moon. Patrick is the moon; he can only reflect a star s light. When reflecting light from the six
stars, the main characters in the novel, Patrick is able to gain a temporary identity. This is what
Patrick is searching for his true identity. Throughout the novel, Patrick becomes like the people he
associates with, and he gains a temporary identity and purpose. He takes on Alice s quest to

The Ethical Considerations Of Children And Young People
Over recent years there has been an increasing approval in Britain and elsewhere that children and
young people should be involved more in decision making which may affect them. Recent years
have seen an increase on the focus of children s rights which include ways of getting young people
and children involved more directly in decision making that impact their lives. In researchterms, this
has been mirrored in a linguistic shift from talking about research on to research with and now,
increasingly, to research by children and youngpeople (Kimmel, A.J., 1988).

The participation of Children and Young People (CYP) in research is placed within the
framework of an international rights based framework within which CYP were granted a right to
have a say. Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) states
that all CYP who are competent of forming their own views, have a right to articulate those views
freely in all subjects affecting them.
According to Robert Holmes (2006), the power dynamics between adults and children present an
important obstacle to the collection of high quality evidence from children. Of course, engagement
with children and young people is not always at an individual level. There are a variety of issues
to think about when engaging with young children. Children and young people may be shy around
unfamiliar adults, even at times even afraid, so it is important to find ways of making them feel
safe and secure. Explanations for adults having power over children and young people are willingly
established in materialistic and paternalistic declarations of looking out for the young children s
best interests, which is to protect them from harm. Most people including young children are in
agreement with the involvement of adults is necessary there are however some critics who question
this. Roberts, H. (2008) points out that power dynamics in children s participation are much messier
than is often explicated, and that power isn t something that children

Controversy Over the United States Providing Developmental...
Throughout history and present day times, many countries such as Germany, France, and Canada
have provided assistance and aid to underdeveloped countries to help alleviate poverty. The United
States itself issues aid to developing countries which include Israel, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and
Ethiopia; this has been an American practice since 1947 after World War II. During the time period
from 1947 to 1949 the United States, under the Marshall Plan, provided both financial and technical
assistance to Europe and Asia after the war. As a result, Europe was rebuilt both politically and
economically. Today the United States continues to provide aidto underdeveloped countries, helping
them evolve and strengthen their economy. Many Americans believe that America is doing the
right thing in issuing aid, while others hold the opinion that the United States should not issue
aid, and that the issue of money to developing countries needs to stop. On one side of the issue
the supporters of developmental aid believe that the United States is doing more than a great job
by offering economic assistance to countries that need help to develop. These individuals are
aware of the unfortunate poverty levels in many countries abroad. They believe that it is the duty
of the American people to help reduce the poverty levels in countries in which people live with
less than a dollar a day. In fact, some supporters believe that the U.S. is not offering enough support

Introduction
Within this final log I shall explain the two contrasting styles of theatre that were covered within
the lesson i.e. naturalism and physical theatre, include examples of exercises that were covered in

Attributes of Brechtian epic theatre
Firstly when watching a Brechtian piece the most apparent is that there is no offstage. When a
character no longer needs to be relevant the actor must instead simply blend into the background

Most physical theatre is devised in origin (the script is formed during a rehearsal), makes use of
music, dance and visual artistry as well as theatre.
The main aim of physical theatre is to challenge the proscenium arch thus breaking the 4th wall and
encourage the audience to participate so as to include the audience in the action with the end goal of
catharsis i.e. the 2 way transferal of emotion between audience and actor/actress
Modern physical theatre has been influenced most of all by mime and contemporary dance.
Physical theatre was started when a student by the name of jean louis barrault who rejected the
notion that mime should be silent, in doing so opening up many new possibilities and thus physical
theatre was born.
Simplistically physical theatre is a style of theatre that focuses more on movement than dialogue
that puts the human body at the centre of the process of storytelling e.g. if there is a building or
monument the actors will become that building or monument, physical theatre tends to also divide
into 2 subgenres, either minimalism in which the set is rather basic and is more heavily reliant on
the actors, or baroque in which there is much lighting, special effects and high intensity drama.

The Bakke Vs. The Regents Of University Of California
The Bakke Vs. The Regents of University of California case is one of the most well known supreme
court cases in America dealing with the topic of affirmative action. Stated by Eastland, affirmative
action policies are those in which an institution or organization actively engages in efforts to
improve opportunities for historically excluded groups in American society (10). In 1978, the
plaintiff Bakke filed a suit against the University of California, claiming that his rejection from the
school was a result of racial discrimination and that it violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the
equal protection clause of the Constitution s Fourteenth Amendment, and the California
Constitution (Posner 171). The U.S Supreme court ruled that affirmative actionwas constitutional,
but not the use of racial quotas. The significance of this case is that it dealt directly with two major
theories prevalent to minorities and race: Their assimilation into the university setting using
affirmative action, and also the systemic racismthat these groups faced as well. More specifically
however, the Bakke Vs. the Regents of University of California case can be explained by systemic
racism more so than assimilation, because systemic racism was and still is in effect in these
educational institutions. Even with the inclusion of programs such as affirmative action that are
supposed to combat systemic racism and simplify assimilation, American institutions were built
upon ideological processes that

Prejudice, were held to incredibly high expectations with making sure their homes and families
were appealing to the public, because everything was reflected on to them. Most women, Mrs.
Bennet for example, during this period had the same responsibilities, but different household
incomes put different priorities on what should be done to keep the family in line. Upper class
wives and mothers, as Miss Bingley, had a responsibility to control and direct, more than physically
getting work done. The position of keeping the family, house, and their selves kept... Show more

If a woman didn t conform to societies set position for her, she probably wouldn t find a man to
marry. The woman s family wouldn t want anything to do with her because their reputations
would be in danger. As in Pride and Prejudice, An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth.
From this day you must be a stranger to one of your parents. Your mother will never see you
again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do , marrying is not a
question (Austen 107). If a woman is in her twenties with no man in mind, she is running out of
time before people start to turn on her and men will want to marry

Leasing A Car
What are the benefits and drawbacks of leasing a car rather than owning one? Benefits Leasing a
car is another term for renting, it is a way to make a car purchase a vehicle with less risk. The
risk is reduced as you have the option to return the car after the term ends, meaning you don t
ever have to worry about owning more than the car is worth. Cars are not generally assets that
store value, their value deceases as the car is driven and become older. If you are a person that
enjoys getting a new car often, leasing may be the best option for you. Once the term is up, you
can easily trade it in for a new model and not risk having to take out a second auto loan. Drawbacks

The old grey stones of the abandoned church were only visible where the vines and moss hadn t
yet reached. The forest itself seemed to crane its neck in an attempt to envelop the solitary church
standing now as the only sign of a once busy community. The stained glass windows had given
way so that the vines could enter and feel their way through a place unknown and forbidden to
their advances for so long. Within the church, a portion of the ceiling had collapsed and a beam of
green forest sunlight illuminated the altar of the old sanctuary.
Not far from this place of refuge was a barren field with no evident traces of life other than a large,
crippled tree looming in the distance. Stories were told about this very tree ... Show more content

I see him in the crowd he s the only one smiling, the only one looking me in the eyes. He knows he
has won and he knows there is nothing I can do to stop my unjust death.
Journal entry 19th November 1860,
I know. I know who it was. I know I m next. I know there is absolutely nothing I can do to stop
this. I m trying to embrace it, really I am but how can I just give up, knowing he took them away
from me? I figured it out I guess it is always the one you least expect. Who would have thought the
friendly neighbour was capable of murder? Definitely not my beloved wife and daughter. Definitely
not the police. Definitely not me.
The police don t suspect him. No they suspect me and I have no evidence to suggest otherwise.
All the police know is that my neighbour reported a disturbance in our house I was arguing with
my wife and suddenly I m the lead suspect in a murder investigation. The murder investigation of
my wife and daughter. The police are no help I tell them it wasn t me and that I stormed out of the
house after the argument and I saw him entering our house straight after. That was the last time I
saw them. The last time I saw my wife s smile. The last time I heard my daughter s cherubic voice.
I may be innocent but I know that my hands are still stained with the blood of my family ... I m
still guilty. If only I didn t start arguing with Sophia. If only I didn t leave straight afterwards. If
only I had the will to survive. I now

Problems To Illegal Immigration
Did you know that immigration is actually good for the society. My sources say that immigration
has been of great social economic and cultural benefit to the U.S. People have always said that
there is problems with immigration, It is not immigration that is the problem the real problem is
Illegal immigration. There are many solutions so I researched them to find out what the society can
do about illegal immigrants. Throughout my research my main question I wanted to eventually
answer was how can we solve a real world problem like immigration? Why aren t there laws that
could prevent the problem of immigration? After all my research it won t be an easy problem to
solve but it is worth solving. People need to know how to stop illegal immigrants from entering this
country.
There are many problems in the world including immigration, too many immigrants are entering the
united states illegally and it is causing the population to overflow. Even though this problem is
illegal immigrants so if should only affect illegal immigrants, it unfortunately affects all the
immigrants. This problem of immigration started when people started to want to immigrate to the
United States. After they immigrated they spread word to all their friends of how much of a better
life they were having here, maybe a better government, or maybe the freedom of religion. No matter
the cause all their friends have now started to immigrate here ,and the United States started to have
such and overflowing

Social Hierarchy Of The Vikings
social hierarchy: 1. social hierarchy the social hierarchy has 4 levels. the thralls, karls, jarls and
kings. social hierarchy is a kind of social differentiation that shows the groups of people in their
societies based upon their occupation and income, wealth and social status, or derived power. 2.
Kings The Vikings did not have a government. Instead, each village or town had its own king or
chief. The kings were the most powerful people in Viking society. Kings were not viewed as
sacred, or special. Instead, they were viewed as impressive men. A king was expected to be
generous not only with food and drink, but with clothes and weapons and gifts. He was
expected to maintain his followers honor against outsiders. He had to lead. He was required to
be a strong fighter, daring, crafty, and hard, since he fought hand to hand beside his men. He
had to be a good public speaker, cheerful and inspirational and able to inspire his men. 3. Jarls
The Jarls were very wealthy people who lived and owned the best houses. The Jarls kept many
slaves and employed vikings to work for them. The Jarls had many followers, treasure, ships, and
estates. 4. Karls The karls were everyday farmers, craftsmen, sailors, and warriors. The karls grew
oats, barley and wheat. The Karls grounded the grain to make flour, porridge and ale. Vikings grew
vegetables such as onions, beans and cabbages. Their farm animals include pigs, sheep, goats,
cattle, geese and chickens. They used manure from the animals

The two articles that I will be comparing are Genres, Subgenres, Sub Subgenres and More by Kembrew McLeod (2001) and On the Value of Popular Music by S. Firth (1996). Categorizing musicis especially challenging when it comes to fitting it into sub genres. As we move through the ages, and technology and communication becomes more complex, newer and unique genres are emerging. The topic of death is ubiquitous in Burton s specialty regularly joined with verse and ridicule. The shocking end up noticeably funny and beautiful. He appreciates them for the unpredictability of their stories and the many sided quality of their universes a long way from being recently highly contrasting. They are both entertaining and dull and near Burton s own particular style. A world brimming with logical inconsistencies, both dull and light, startling and inviting, merciless and delicate. He also wrote in order to confess his own Christian faith and clearly repudiate any supposed lingering connections on his part with Manichaeism. Finally, The Confessions are a heartfelt paean of praise and thanksgiving in honor of God s glory. Augustine begins his autobiography with a prayer and meditation. This is fitting because the main theme of The Confessions is to praise and thank God. He begins by saying that God has, made us and drawn us to yourself, and our heart is unquiet until it rests in you. The most relevant literary figure used in the tale is the trickster, which is, in the study of folklore, a god, a spirit, or simply a human hero who breaks godВґs or natureВґs rules, sometimes with bad intention, but usually with final positive... The forces of nature triumph once again in order to show a tale s moral. Bear acts in a more natural way. He finally concludes the cycle that his character was intended for, but not before showing an initial naГЇve personality. This situation creates a first impression on the reader /listener, implying that good convincing skills can defeat what is naturally expected to happen. However, and with full intention of developing a tale moral, these convincing skills only take effect on a temporary basis. The message this tale wants to issue is that nature might be unaware for some time, but at the end, it always defeats any intention of shortcutting the life cycle. This moral is among the most usual used in Native American coyote stories, which were normally told to audiences of young and old people alike. They were sometimes told to teach about cosmology, as instructional stories for the young, to explain history, and sometimes just for the sake of telling and listening to a funny story. In all these different cases, Coyote stories are a reflection for our own lives, pointing out the smallest miseries and the biggest strengths of humans. Unfortunately for him, in the present tale, Coyote serves as the example of a negative attitude, which finally always leads to a tragic end. King Alfred the Great Essay King Alfred the Great King Alfred the Great was born at Wantage, in 849, on a royal manor of his father s holding, a family estate which long afterward he himself would leave in legacy to his wife. Alfred was the youngest of five children, four sons and a daughter, born to Ethelwulf by his wife Osburh. When Alfred was four years old, his father, the king, who by now had long despaired of getting to Rome in the present state of things, decided to send Alfred there, to at least receive the blessing of the Holy Father. The pope at the time, Leo the IV, gave Alfred the blessing to become king. Alfred s time came in the year mid April 871, when King Г†thelred died. Except Alfred who decided to allow half the men liable for service to remain at home while the other half was out against the Danes (Stenton 261). In order for Alfred to keep peace and defeat the Danes, he had to win many major battles. On Easter Sunday 878, when King Alfred withdrew into the Isle of Athelney, there was every likelihood that before the end of the year Wessexwould have been divided out among the members of the Danish army. King Alfred made sure that Wessex would escape that fate. Although Alfred did lose a major battle against the Danes only four years ago, he overcame them in 878 when he won the Battle of Edington. Alfred showed strong resistance by constantly engaging Danish raiding parties from his base in Athelney. After nearly seven weeks of strong battles, Alfred was able to begin defeating the Danes (Stenton 253). Along with Alfred s idea of coercing a recalcitrant peasantry, he had other ways of defeating the Danes as well. Alfred began building warships in order to develop a navy. • 26. Evolution Vs Creationism Research Paper Evolution vs Creationism As we all grew up under the guidance and knowledge of our own parents, we had been slowly molded to accept certain beliefs, while rejecting others. We were also taught to think creatively and question what we were taught, even from them. The status quo is always changing and evolving and the problem we find in today s society is that sometimes we see and hear things and immediately take them as fact, or even repetitively until we believe them as fact with no evidence to back those things up. In my opinion, we have lost the ability to, not only think for ourselves, but to truly question the mass amount of knowledge we consume on a daily basis. As I grew older and learned about evolution my beliefs were strongly challenged with no merit. The problem I had with both scenarios was that they are both THEORIES. A good example of me questioning what these theories actually meant is when I went through grade school, the pledge of allegiance had been removed because it had the word God in it. As a young child I questioned the fact of why I couldn t say it in school. Later on, as I entered high school, our class had scratched the surface on evolution and I wondered why we were not taught creationism as well, and why we were not allowed to make our own decision of what we were being taught throughout school. According to a Gallup poll of 1,016 U.S. adults about 45 percent of those surveyed favored the statement God created human beings in their present form within the last 10,000 years (Fitch 1). If the survey showed an almost even split of both theories then why are we forced to learn only evolution in schools? Scientists and science educators have concluded that evolution should be taught in science classes because it is the only tested, comprehensive, scientific explanation for the nature of the biological world today that is supported by overwhelming evidence and widely accepted by the scientific community (National Academy of Sciences 53). As a society that has proven itself wrong time and time again how can we for sure say the Big Bang theory is where our ancestors came from and everything around us came to be? The problem with religion is that there are many of them and they each have their own opinions. The church considered the use of instruments as profane. There was no musical notation as songs were passed along from person to person by rote memorization. In the secular world, instruments were used at times by jongleurs, trouveres, and minnesingers. Some of those early instruments include the vielle, harp, psaltery, flute, shawm, bagpipe, and drums (Thomas et al.). Lastly learning is defined as associations, representations, and predictions about future rewards based on past experiences (Kringelbach and Berridge 2008). I like the way this paper breaks up the term reward because it causes you to actually think about which parts of the brain correspond with each defined term. This paper goes on to talk about how with each component of reward lies a conscious and unconscious process. Something I found that stuck out was how the paper addresses the challenges the brain possesses with respect to rewards. The paper states The primary challenge is to identify which brain systems mediate pleasure versus other components of reward and to map components correctly onto their own neural substrates (Fig. 1). This challenge is difficult because a rewarding stimulus or event will elicit many or all of these reward components simultaneously and so activate many brain systems at the same time (Kringelbach and Berridge 2008). Merchants, cashing in on daimyo debt attained positions of authority within the daimyo households. Many were living lavish lifestyles only dreamt of by samurai. This caused resentment in Japanese society because, although they were socially inferior, merchants enjoyed an elevated status economically (Kunihiko 1997). Perhaps the social class that suffered the most indignities was the samurai who, lacking the means to earn a living on their regular income, indulged in the lifestyle of Edo. Do you believe that ecological approaches have a valid place in contemporary criminological thinking? Specifically...why or why not? Insanity Defense should be abolished in that it serves as an excuse for criminals to get away with crime and as such, it should be abolished. This opinion is similar to those echoed by other scholars. For instance, Perlin (2016) noted that if the government is sincere about protecting the public, then the mental condition of the individual at the time the crime is committed is immaterial. Currently, a lot of time is wasted during trials with psychiatrists running scenarios of what might be wrong with the accused. Secondly, it is interesting to realize that in all the insanity defense cases, the defense psychiatrist always says the accused is insane while the prosecution psychiatrist always maintain that the accused is sane. The consistency of this trend rules out the laws of chance, thus leaving the whole approach as a victim of manipulation from either the prosecution or defense side. This shows that the insanity defense can be manipulated by either side so as to serve their own interest. In most cases, the insanity defense is normally used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The United States itself issues aid to developing countries which include Israel, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Ethiopia; this has been an American practice since 1947 after World War II. During the time period from 1947 to 1949 the United States, under the Marshall Plan, provided both financial and technical assistance to Europe and Asia after the war. The Regents of University of California case is one of the most well known supreme court cases in America dealing with the topic of affirmative action. Stated by Eastland, affirmative action policies are those in which an institution or organization actively engages in efforts to improve opportunities for historically excluded groups in American society (10). In 1978, the plaintiff Bakke filed a suit against the University of California, claiming that his rejection from the school was a result of racial discrimination and that it violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the equal protection clause of the Constitution s Fourteenth Amendment, and the California Constitution (Posner 171). The U.S Supreme court ruled that affirmative actionwas constitutional, but not the use of racial quotas. The significance of this case is that it dealt directly with two major theories prevalent to minorities and race: Their assimilation into the university setting using affirmative action, and also the systemic racismthat these groups faced as well. More specifically however, the Bakke Vs. the Regents of University of California case can be explained by systemic racism more so than assimilation, because systemic racism was and still is in effect in these educational institutions. • 44. If Only By Shirley Jackson Journal Entry If only... 2015 The old grey stones of the abandoned church were only visible where the vines and moss hadn t yet reached. The forest itself seemed to crane its neck in an attempt to envelop the solitary church standing now as the only sign of a once busy community. The stained glass windows had given way so that the vines could enter and feel their way through a place unknown and forbidden to their advances for so long. Within the church, a portion of the ceiling had collapsed and a beam of green forest sunlight illuminated the altar of the old sanctuary. Not far from this place of refuge was a barren field with no evident traces of life other than a large, crippled tree looming in the distance. Stories were told about this very tree ... The murder investigation of my wife and daughter. The police are no help I tell them it wasn t me and that I stormed out of the house after the argument and I saw him entering our house straight after. That was the last time I saw them. The last time I saw my wife s smile. The last time I heard my daughter s cherubic voice. I may be innocent but I know that my hands are still stained with the blood of my family ... I m still guilty. If only I didn t start arguing with Sophia. If only I didn t leave straight afterwards. If only I had the will to survive. I now ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many solutions so I researched them to find out what the society can do about illegal immigrants. Throughout my research my main question I wanted to eventually answer was how can we solve a real world problem like immigration? Why aren t there laws that could prevent the problem of immigration? After all my research it won t be an easy problem to solve but it is worth solving. People need to know how to stop illegal immigrants from entering this country. There are many problems in the world including immigration, too many immigrants are entering the united states illegally and it is causing the population to overflow. Even though this problem is illegal immigrants so if should only affect illegal immigrants, it unfortunately affects all the immigrants.
