Water Contamination Experiment
This lab experiment was to examine the effects of water contamination. This experiment was
based on the quality of water in a town named Fruitvale in which the water had been infected due
to rubbish and litter. Our task was to conduct an experiment using the different water samples
and universal indicator. The universal indicator displays the ppb(contamination level) level in
the water. In total there were 40 well that could be possibly be tested. I tested 23 wells in all. My
final hypothesis is: if I tested wells 12, 9, 6, 16, 15 then the ppb level would be higher because
these wells are near the old chemical company, the farm that uses pesticides and the trash land.
This project was based off of a story of a village named Fruitvale in which

Tax Reform For Small Businesses
Executive Summary
Tax reform is the crucial component in Government s policy agenda so as to frame more
employment, production, and opportunities. It is mostly initiated for the improvement of levy
policy in order to implement social as well as the economic benefits. This policy paper explores
and suggest tax reforms for small businesses in Australia and also analyzes the various
consequences of its impacts in terms of unemployment, poverty, inequality, and on the overall
economy. Since much of the emphasis is on taxation and incentives at the same time, this paper also
discusses options for providing loans to startups and small scale industries.
This policy paper suggests that how Australian Government can transform its legislative system
and design its tax for small companies and businesses in such a way to overcome the threats
brought forward by the 21st century in order to sustain and promote its social as well as the
economic progress.
This paper further puts light on the fact that how taxes in regards to small businesses should be
lower and whatever taxes are imposed must be paid up on time. The tax policy should be designed
in such a way that it fosters entrepreneurship rather than compensating intrusive tax outlining.
Wherever feasible some recommendation has been put forward to streamline the tax plans on small
businesses in order to fit taxation system from the frame of Business workouts in this modern era.

Analysis of Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town
In the poem Anyone Lived in a Pretty how Town E. E. Cummings plays with jumbled syntax, a
seemingly random rhyme scheme, and the paradox of non identical repetition to convey his
message about the ordinariness of daily life, the passing of time, and the inclusive anonymity of
people we encounter in our lives. Anyone Lived in a Pretty how Town describes the daily lives of
the people who live in a certain, nameless town. The town is not named and neither are any of the
townspeople, other than to give titles such as man, woman, child. These anonymous people living
in the anonymous town do nothing notable; in fact, they are all fairly unremarkable as they go
about their daily lives. The poem addresses all the seasons of life that the... Show more content on

definite structure to it. The words floating, dance, and sing all appear in the poem and add to the

as life has seasons that all last a certain amount of time and follow a particular sequence. Each step

Suicide Is A Serious Issue
Suicide is one of the largest social problems today affecting many lives in one way or another. It
is a serious issue with multiple contributors that have been elusive in many cases as we try to
understand why many younger people are choosing to end their lives instead of receive the help
they need. Suicideis a serious issue that can have lasting results on individuals, families and
communities. Although suicide rates decreased from 1990 2000, suicide is on the rise again
and now the 10th leading cause of death in the US for all ages (SAVE | Suicide Facts. n.d.). The
causes of suicide are complex and unique to each, therefore, with effective prevention approaches,
patient rights, and options as well as resources available to those experiencing suicidal ideations,
we can promote awareness of suicide and encourage social change.Funding for community
resources has been shrinking for decades, and it is becoming problematic for many of those who
are in urgent need of psychiatric attention. Access to comprehensive, quality mental health service
is often compounded by discriminatory barriers such as high costs and lack of insurance coverage.
These restrictions imposed by insurance companies as well as policies and procedures delay
patients from receiving appropriate care, as well as the inability to receive preventive care and
hospitalization that could be prevented. For many individuals diagnosed with mental health
disorders, are routinely discriminated against having to pay

The Differences Between Market Research And Marketing...
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MARKET RESEARCH AND MARKETING RESEARCH.
Marketing research refers to a well planned and rational study analysis and interpretation of
marketing problems undertaken for actionable decision making. Marketing research considers the
more immediate situation. It is primarily concerned with the provision of information about
markets and the reaction of these to various product, price, distribution and promotion decisions.
(Boone, 2006)
Marketing research can be divided into two types; external continuous data and external ad hoc data.
Generally, marketing research helps in many different ways. It gives information on consumer
groups, it gives information on price, promotion, product and distribution, it gives information on

Neural Systems Controlling Emotions Have Influence On...
Research Objectives
The research completed by Shiv et al (2004), was to identify whether or not dysfunctions in neural
systems controlling emotions could influence and promote individual s gambling abilities.
Emotions can be either beneficial or detrimental to one s behaviour; it depends on what task is on
hand and the individual differences. As previous research in neuroscience has highlighted the
positive roles of emotions in everyday decision making, Shiv et al (2004) wanted to test out if
individuals with dysfunctional emotional reactions could actually make better decisions than
normal individuals. A specific scenario that brought curiosity to the researchers was how a patient
with ventromedial prefrontal damage, an area responsible for fear, responded accurately to
hazardous road conditions. Instead of becoming fearful and stepping on the breaks during icy roads,
this individual lacked fear so the patient assessed the situation and responded properly. This patient
with ventromedial prefrontal cortex damage handled the hazardous situation logically rather than
emotionally, allowed him to react properly. Shiv et al (2004) are specifically looking at how
dysfunctions in neural systems controlling emotions could affect gambling abilities. As normal
individuals usually display a myopic loss aversion, high levels of risk aversion towards gambling,
this study wants to detect if individuals with injuries with emotional brain circuitry systems would
also have myopic loss

Happy Gilmore Character Analysis
Happy Gilmore is a comedic 90 s movie about the transition from an ineffective hockey player to
a talented golfer. This is a 1996 film, Adam Sandler, who portrays Happy Gilmore faces few
obstacles when learning how to play golf. The reason why he joins a golf tournament was that he
needed the money to save his grandmother s house. His grandmother has not pay taxes for past 10
years so she owed $270,00 otherwise her home would be lost. Happy Gilmoreis a naГЇve and
absurd character that struggles with anger issues but later learns how to deal with it through dumb
childish humor. Throughout the golftournament, he has a nemesis, Shooter Mcgavin, who is
arrogant that gets jealous at Happy Gilmore for his hidden talent at golf. Although Gilmore has
serious anger issues, his patience and dedication teach the audience that one s passion is not always
something one is good at.
One of the eye catching concepts that are hard to miss is Happy s aggression in sports. He is either
yelling, cursing, fighting or attacking someone throughout this film. At the beginning of the film
when he was trying out for the hockey team, there is a scene where he loses his temper. He didn t
make the team so he attacked the coach for being cut. Then there is the scene when he is mad at
his girlfriend so he yells at her but then changes to innocent sad boyfriend voice and just kept
switching off between those two personas. This was very interesting to watch because he was two

Angell s Belief in Functionalism and John Watson s Belief...
It was also suggested by Angell(1913) that consciousness was best if forgotten and there should be
a objective method of describing animal and human behavior but also believed that if it were to
exist , it should definitely be of some use for an organism .
The statement also suggests that it was not only John Watson the founder of behaviorism who
proposed the idea rather it was thought about before him. His rise and influence was probably
because of introducing the idea at a time when it could be accepted by the time and tide of that
period.
Psychology had been the study of mind from a very long time and was represented by the method of
introspection defined as studying the mind by analyzing the thoughts.
Angell s functionalism aimed to apply psychology and its methods to real life problems however
the problem with both structuralism and functionalism was that the methods were not reliable and
introspection was considered to be a problem rather than a solution.
Psychology could not convince people of its usefulness and practical problem and the founder of
behaviorism John Watson believed that both structuralism and functionalism were subjective and
introduced behaviorism as objective. (Moore ,2011) which was considered to be a transformation
from one phase of science to another . (Gardner ,1985)
Behaviorism has been believed to influence everyday life from parenting and learning to employee
perks in organizations. It aims to study behavior and how it can be changed, it

Nectar In A Sieve Essay
Nectar in a Sieve
Kamala Purnaiya Taylor is an Indian novelist and journalist from Mysore in southern India. Being a
very private person in nature, her literature is usually written under the pseudonym of Kamala
Markandaya. After studying history at the University of Madras, she worked as a journalist and
published short stories in Indian newspapers. A couple of years after she immigrated to England
with her English husband, Markandaya published her first novel, Nectar in the Sieve.
This novel won several awards, was chosen as a Book of the Month Club Main Selection in the
United States, and the American Library Association named it a notable book in 1955. Despite her
success, Markandaya remained an extremely private person, revealing little about her personal life
and influences. Even so, insight can be gained into her work by evaluating the religious, political,
and social contexts of her writing.
Having been raised in India as a Hindu Brahmin, in her work, Markandaya addresses a
fundamental question of Hindu belief: What does it mean to be human? Her Hindu beliefs, and
traditions are central to Nectar in a Sieve, and remnants of the epic Ramayana, one of the best loved
Indian folktales, are also woven throughout the novel. Markandaya shapes Rukmani, the main

Bluest Eye Thesis
Toni Morrison s book The Bluest Eye tells the story of Pecola Breedlove, an eleven year old
black girl who desperately wants blue eyes because she thinks they ll make her beautiful.
Because of her father, she becomes the epicenter of town gossip and a scapegoat that the people
use to make themselves feel superior. Pecola feels hated and ugly in her community because she
s black and seems convinced that if she had blue eyes, all her problems would go away. Morrison
s novel is a timeless work of art that explores and develops many themes such as the idea that
being white is equivalent to being beautiful. Like many incredible pieces of literature, the novel
continues to inspire people. After reading the novel, I realized that in a way, I m Pecola: I m a

awwwww, but not for me (22)? While the circumstances in which she has this revelation are a bit
extreme, it shows that in her society, there is an implicit message that being white is equal to
being beautiful and that if you re a young white girl, you re beautiful but, if you re a young black
girl, you re a monster. At the age of eleven, Pecola detests everything about herself. She thinks
that because she s black she s ugly and doesn t deserve to be loved. She s convinced that if she had

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Energy Efficient Medium...
1 ) Energy Efficient Medium Access Protocol
A medium access control layer is the most suitable level to address the energy efficiency.
This layer is used to coordinate node access to the shared wireless medium. The MAC is the core
of communication protocol stack which provides the basic for achieving Quality of Service (QoS)
in any wireless networks. A versatile MAC should support diverse applications and different types
of data such as continuous, periodic, burst and non periodic data along with high level QoS. MAC
plays a major determining factor in improving overall network performance. The fundamental task
in MAC protocol is to avoid collisions and to prevent simultaneous transmissions while preserving
maximum throughput, minimum latency, communication reliability and maximum energy

Fang and Dutkiewicz in [28] propose energy efficient TDMA based MAC protocol for WBAN. In
this protocol, packet collision, idle listening and control packet overhead have been reduced by
allocating three bandwidth management schemes: Burst Bandwidth, Periodic Bandwidth and
Adjust Bandwidth in order to improve energy efficiency. An efficient sleep node is introduced to
turn off a node s radio, especially for the nodes supporting low duty cycle applications.
The MAC frame in BodyMAC protocol has three parts:
Beacon, downlink and uplink sub frames.
The beacon serves the purpose MAC layer synchronization. The downlink frame is used for

Lean Manufacturing And Six Sigma
Q3. 1.Introduction In today s world, majority of the enterprises are driven through customers need
whose primary emphasis is on quality. Hence there is a need for continuous process improvement to
satisfy the need of the customers. Lean Manufacturing and Six sigma approach has been applied in
diverse manufacturing processes which in turn has contributed significantly in achieving
continuous improvements. By utilizing these tools, organizations focus on maximizing their

President Nkrumah s The Fight Against Imperialism
President Nkrumah s ideology and ability to mobilize a continent of individuals was based heavily
on his dedication to inform the oppressed about the current war being waged. This new war
expanded across continents and was described as neocolonialism. President Nkrumah inspired
further generations of likeminded individuals such as Kwame Ture who adopted Nkrumah s first
name. In order to understand both Kwame Ture and Kwame Nkrumah s influence in the fight
against imperialismit is important to understand both men s definition of colonialismin Africaand
The Americas. Both individuals offer a way to destroy these mechanisms in hopes that African and
Latin American countries can find unity and freedom from Imperialism. President Nkrumah
describes neo colonialism as a mechanism existing through economic, political, religious,
ideological, and cultural means at the hands of the Western World and their pre existing colonizers.
Neo colonialism is regarded as the birth child of early colonialism by European and American
countries. Colonialism sucked the resources dry from the countries in which they occupied.
Colonizers then sold the products in their home countries, leaving little to spare for the Indian,
African, and Latin American inhabitants who continued to live in poverty. President Nkrumah
describes this new form of colonialism as switching tactics. He describes these imperialist tactics;
as methods of promoting independence and freedom when in reality they are

Social Comparison Theory
The social comparison theory offers some level of explanation for how media images actually come
to impact the way women feel about their bodies. It examines how individuals evaluate themselves
in relation to peers, groups, and/or social categories (Milkie, 1999). The main argument is that
people compare themselves on many different dimensions with other individuals who are similar to
them. Depending on the target of comparison, a person will usually judge themselves as being
either or better or worse on some dimension. An upward comparison occurs when an individual
compares himself or herself to someone who fares better than they do on a particular construct. In
contrast, downward comparisons involve a person comparing himself or herself to... Show more

Television, advertisements, magazines, and other forms of popular media provide a plethora of
references for upward social comparison. Images in the media generally project a standard to
which women are expected to aspire, yet that standard is almost completely impossible for most
women to achieve (Schooler et al., 2004; Thompson Coovert, 1999). Women almost always fall
short of standards that are expected of them regarding physical appearance. Particularly for women,
it is difficult to go through a day without viewing images that send the message, you re not good
enough. The pervasiveness of the media makes it very challenging for most women to avoid
evaluating themselves against the sociocultural standard of beauty (Milkie, 1999). Most companies
that target women in the media actually attempt to foster social comparison with idealized images,
in order to motivate women to buy products that will bring them closer to the ideal (e.g. diet
products, makeup, hair products). If women see a discrepancy between themselves and the images
they view in advertisements (which the almost definitely will), they will be more inclined to buy
the products that are advertised (Thompson Coovert,

Freud s Theories Of Human Sexual Development Essay
Human sexual development begins in the womb and traverses the entire life span. From fetal
hormonal influences that determine expressed sex to nascent sexual discovery in toddlers, dramatic
physical changes during puberty, and sexual partners in adulthood, sexuality follows us throughout
every major developmental stage in life (some developmental stages even being defined by sexual
changes, e.g. menarche, spermarche, and menopause). With sexuality being such an integral part of
the human experience, it is no surprise, then, that various prominent thinkers have created theories
based upon stages of human sexual development. Arguably one of the most influential theories of
human sexual development are Sigmund Freuds stages of psychosexual development(Freud, 1905
/1962). While this entry seeks to give the reader an overview of Freud s theory of psychosexual
development, it is also a worthwhile venture to include the environmental, societal and
philosophical backgrounds which influenced Freud. Sigmund Freud (1856 1939) was an Austrian
neurologist and the founder of the counseling technique of psychoanalysis, the first technique
coined to alleviate psychopathological ailments through talking (i.e. the talking cure ). Freud was
born into a society rife with sexual debauchery (Grandner Jones, 1996). Prostitution ran rampant
throughout Vienna, but a societal demonization of sexuality, comparable to Victorian England,
created a confusing system of mores. Many contemporaries

Age Of Exploration During The Commercial Revolution
Age of Exploration (1350 1550) (Call to Freedom CTF)
The Commercial Revolution changed Europe by changing the way people did business in the
1200s. On page 33 in CTF, the second paragraph states During the Commercial Revolution,
however, merchants and craftspeople became more aggressive about making a profit. Many
Landlords wanted farmers to grow crops to be sold on their rented land. Cities grew rich from
specific things such as dying cloth in Florence and glassmaking in Venice. They also brought rare
goods from far away making many cities have rich trading centers. Not everybody could afford a
business because people were too obsessed with making money. Instead, they created joint stock
companies just in case their business didn t work out as planned. People opened banks to earn
capital from interest such as the Medici family. Europe reached a high point where many people
were wealthy and gained more power changing rising Europe s economy and power causing
many monopolies. There was also great growth in the merchant s class and towns/urban centers
(Page 33, CTF). The Commercial Revolution was greatly based off trade (CTF, PG. 35,
Paragraph 3 6) and many things were traveled via the Silk Road. When trading with other places,
people became interested in where these things were from so the explored and looked for these
places. Another reason for people exploring was that they wanted to spread Christianity.

Nursing Self Regulation Essay
A profession can be defined as a prestigious occupation with a high degree of identification among
its member that requires a length and rigorous education in an intellectually demanding and
theoretically based course of study; that engages in rigorous self regulation and control; that holds
authority over clients; and that puts service to society above simple self interest (Schwirian, 1998,
p. 6). Nursing is just that, and with its specific body of knowledge, standards, and codes of ethics, it
is only fitting that it be self regulated (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2012). The College of Nurses
works with registered nurses, registered practical nurses, and nursepractioners to determine whether
or not standards and best practices are met and that the public s safety is protected.
Specific Knowledge
Self regulation is the idea of a professional group entering an agreement with the government to
regulate their activities of their members (Canadian Nurses Association, 2007). This allows the
government to have a small role in the control over the practice of the profession and the services
that the members provide, but they do not have to gain in depth expertise to regulate the profession
that would be needed if it were under direct regulation. Self regulation acknowledges that the

What Is The Disinterest In High School
Disinterest in High School
Throughout my years in the classroom, student interest in academics has decreased tremendously.
Moreover, no longer are students interested in sitting quietly, taking notes while the teacher
disseminates information. Students want and need active engagement. They want to participate
fully in the acquisition of knowledge. In this 21 century world, educators need to find new and
innovative methods to galvanize students in becoming active participants in their education.
Who Am I?
I have been a classroom teacher for twenty three years, during which I have taught in Las Vegas,
NV; Ontario, Ca; Rancho Cucamonga, CA; and Turlock, CA. I have taught all grade levels nine
through twelve. Currently, I teach eleventh grade American Literature and AP Language and
Composition at Pitman High School in Turlock, California.
The Community
Turlock is a mid sized, conservative city that boasts a population of just under 73,000 residents;
however, it has an extremely small town feel as it is a highly agricultural area. There are two
high schools, two junior high schools, and eight elementary schools. According to the United
States 2016 census, 23% of Turlock residents have a bachelor s degree or greater, 63% work in
the civilian labor force, 8% are unemployed, 18% live in poverty, and the median household
income is approximately $50, 000.00 per year. Pitman High School (PHS) has a large student body
of more than 2,000 students. Its population is diverse,

Essay on The Origination Of Punk Rock
The Origination of Punk Rock
The time was in the mid seventies, there was a void in the music industry that needed to be
filled. This need for a new sound was aptly filled by punk rock, a new type of sound that had
evolved from mostly rock and a little pop music. The focus of this paper is on punk rock and it s
ample beginnings, early pioneers of the new sound, punk rock listener s cultural background and
their ideas as a whole, bands influenced by the punk rock movement, and the state of punk rock
today.
The year is 1974, this year marks the birth of punk rock (1974). There is controversy as to where
punk started out at, some say it began in London while others say it ... Show more content on

Another one of punk rock s pioneers was the animated Iggy Pop. Iggy began his musical career,
or let me say, his career took off after leaving the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Iggy formed a band
with friends who really had no idea how to play their instruments. This way their lack of musical
knowledge would allow Iggy to incorporate his zany and unorthodox style into their playing style
(History). Iggy was a maniac on stage, cutting himself, screaming at fans, and displaying obscenities
unheard of in that time. Although Iggy never achieved much commercial success back then, Iggy
just released a song Corruption which is on the charts.
The punk subculture is often seen as a rebellious group of misguided youngsters who often come
from lower class dwellings and haven t gotten the attention that they needed so they dye their hair,
dress differently, and act differently. In Facing The Music edited by Simon Frith, Mary Harron
reduced the meaning of punk to the spectacle of middle class children dressing up in a fantasy of
proletarian aggression and lying desperately about their backgrounds (History). The flipside to that
is that maybe these youths are expressing their individualism and choose to stray away from

Slavery, a World History
Slavery, an issue some would say is complicated. So what exactly is slavery? What does it mean?
And how did it come to be? These are complex questions that are often asked and possibly, by
understanding the forms it takes and the roles such slaves performed. What daily life is like for
those enchained and what can be done to end this demeaning practice may help in answering those
questions. It is known that slaveryis a system under which people are treated as property to be
bought, sold and are forced to work. It is also known that slavery was established in the history and
economy of most countries. Even though it prospered during some periods and abstained in others,
human bondage for profit has unfortunately, never been completely removed. Author Milton
Meltzer, in his book Slavery, A World History follows this practice from prehistoric hunting
societies; through the development of slave trading in the United States prior to the Civil War, it
disturbingly reached a total number of four million slaves. He continues through the forced labor
applied under the Nazi establishment and in the Soviet prison camps. And he concludes with the
broad practice of slavery in many of the countries today, examples to include, women sold into
prostitution in Thailand and the debt bondage that minors endure in Brazil.
Many are often shocked to learn that historians have considered slavery as a step forward in the
development of civilization. From the earliest times, it was customary

A Look Into Game Theory Essay
The origins of Game Theory trace back to a letter written by Francis Waldegrave in 1713 which
proposed a minimax mixed strategy solution to a two person card game named le Her. In the
following century Charles Darwin acted as one of the pioneers in broadening the realm of this
theory into the biology of evolution as he applied the theoretic strategy in his argument of natural
selection power to equalize the sex equilibrium ratio in nature. Game Theories initial applications
were restricted to two person zero sum games where the pay off matrix was symmetric, or in other
words that the sum of the payoffs to the two participants maintains a constant value. However,
modern adaptations of game theorycame into play after John von Neumann... Show more content on

If we apply the Nash equilibrium conditions into a situation where there exists an option for both
players to cooperate or to be non cooperative, and none of these participants are aware of the other
s decision, but still knows that she/he can choose either, we have started to establish conditions
ideal for the Prisoner s dilemma. Here each party will look to adapt a dominant strategy, one that
produces an outcome that is most beneficial to them regardless of the other party s strategy.
Although it would be advantageous to each party if they both chose to cooperate, a decision is
made when they each choose a non ideal outcome to protect themselves at the expense of the other
party. Here is where the paradox is made; each participant has followed a completely logical thought
process, yet finds themselves in a worse situation than the hypothetical situation in which they both
cooperated. The logic that brings about this outcome comes from the uncertainty in the other party
s decision.
The dilemma s that often arise in the world of dating are extremely applicable to such modes of
thinking. One of the most commonly occurring dilemma of dating and relationships is the
decision to cooperate or not in the face of any sort of mistreatment. Whether it is being stood up
on a date, or being lied to, the victim of the wrongdoing is faced with the decision of

Odysseus Is Not A Heroic Figure In Homer s Odyssey
In the epic poem the Odyssey by Homer, the main character Odysseus is lost on a island with a
goddess Calypso. Odysseus has to go through many obstacles to find his way back home. Some of
the things he has to do to get home hurts other people. Odysseus does things throughout his journey
that clearly show he is not a heroic figure. Odysseushas proven many times that he is not a heroic
figure. His actions convey that he is not heroic at all. Some of the reasons why Odysseus is not
heroic at all is because, he destroys people s homes, lies to his men, and cheats on his wife. One
of the reasons Odysseus is not a heroic figure is because he destroys people s homes. There are

One example of when Odysseus lied to his men was when he didn t tell them about the things
Circe told him would happen. The crew being now silent before me, I addressed them, sore at
heart: Dear friends, more than one man, or two, should know those things Circe foresaw for us
and shared with me, so let me tell her forecast: then we die with our eyes open, if we are going to
die, or know what death we battle if we can (12. 1239, 1242). This proves that Odysseus did not
tell his men that Circe predicted trouble was coming there way. Voices came down to me in
anguish calling my name for the last time (12. 1342, 1343).This is what Odysseus said soon after
he just saw some of his men being eaten. He knew they would have a rough time getting home but
he didn t tell them. The consequences that his men experienced were not fair because they didn t
know what would happen. Odysseus is not heroic because his men were always loyal to him, but he

Essay on Amy Tan’s A Mother’s Tongue
Amy Tan s A Mother s Tongue
The purpose of Amy Tan s essay, Mother Tongue, is to show how challenging it can be if an
individual is raised by a parent who speaks limited English (36) as Tan s mother does, partially
because it can result in people being judged poorly by others. As Tan s primary care giver, her
mother was a significant part of her childhood, and she has a strong influence over Tan s writing
style. Being raised by her mother taught her that one s perception of the world is heavily based
upon the language spoken at home. Alternately, people s perceptions of one another are based
largely on the language used.
Tan was born to a pair of Chinese immigrants. Her mother understood English extremely well, but
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was because her mother s version of English and its modified rules caused Tan to be confused
on some of the questions.
Tan employs cause and effect when she is talking about her experiences with IQ tests and the
SATs. The fact that her mother spoke English the way she did made it very difficult for Tan to
envision what the test was asking, as with the questions where she could not identify one singular
correct answer. In her experience with language, maybe she had heard her mother would say
something a certain way, even though, technically, it was not grammatically correct. Her
perceptions of things, specifically the rules of language, were different because of the language
used at her home.
She also incorporates problem and solution when she is describing how she had to talk for her
mother. Her belief is that people will not take you seriously if you do not speak proper English,
and to prove this, she shows how her mother encountered that kind of attitude often. Tan describes
how she had to call the stockbroker because her mother was concerned about not getting a check,
and how the hospital would not look for a lost CAT scan until Tan was called to mediate. Even
though the mother speaks English, Tan still needs to act as a translator.
Compare and contrast comes in to play at the very beginning of the essay when Tan is describing
her mother listening to her giving a lecture.

There s a small but steady amount of suicides we call jumpers, states Sgt.
Bill Keeton of Metro Police. They re generally tourists. Some jump off an overpass, even Hoover
Dam, but casinos are first choice. Balconies. The hotels wised up. Roofs stay locked.
Las Vegas has other names for its fatalities. Snowbirds are retirees from the
Northwest who settle here or come to gamble their pension funds. Downwinders are former Utah
residents fighting cancer who lived downwind of radioactive breezes in the fifties and sixties.
Nuclear testing was only one desert valley away; like the airport now, it was so close hotel rooms

It s not necessarily gamblers, Keeton goes on. Just people who ve planned one last fling. We
used to get a lot from Los Angeles. Now it s people from all over the world. We had a young man

came here and went to a pistol range, shot targets for a while, then took his gun into a bathroom
and killed himself. His family in Ireland kept asking, why Las Vegas? At that same pistol range, a
man from Japan shot himself in his shooting stall. It s strange.
I hear other stories. Of a wealthy man from Malibu, in the computer business, who committed
suicide with sleeping pills and a plastic bag, in a luxury suite at the Mirage. His body was found
next to the room s baby grand piano. He had bad relations with his ex wife.

To What Extent Does the Reform Act of 1832 Deserve Its...
The title, great is reserved for a select few characters and documents in history. Alfred earned his
through establishing stable change, peace and improvement. So too the Magna Carta, which
brought about greater justice and freedom for the common man and limited royal influence. In the
same ways, the reform act of 1832 warranted the title. It was by no means a revolutionary measure,
nor the final solution of a great constitutional question as Russell had put it, but both symbolically
and physically, it spelt change for Britain. This in itself showed its greatness despite Pitt having
attempted reform in the 1780s, and the issue having repeatedly returned to parliament, no reform

Getting bills past the commons was no longer a difficulty: the second reform bill passed by 140
votes. The lords, however, declined the second bill by a majority of 41. On the very same day,
rioting began in Derby and Nottingham and spread throughout England over the following days.
Britain had never been so close to revolution in October 1831: with no police force (other than a
minor presence in London), the army too small and too poorly trained to cope and rioting across
the country, all the signs were in place for a rebellion in frustration of lack of reform.
Nottingham castle was burnt down, Bristol Bishop s Palace was attacked, killing 12 and
injuring 400, prisoners in Nottingham were set free, the church was specifically targeted (as 21
of 26 Bishops had voted against reform) and there were widespread disturbances and mass
demonstrations. The situation was far more serious than the 1790s or 1819; the repressive
legislation that had worked then would not here. Reform was necessary to avert revolution.
Similar activities continued after the failure of the third reform bill; although slightly less frenzied,
activities such as withdrawing savings from banks to precipitate an economic crisis were just as
damaging. Finally (after Peel refused to serve under Wellington, so the government remained with
Grey), the reform act was passed. As soon as news of this spread, civil disruption quietened. The

Causes And Consequences Of The War Of 1812
The war of 1812 was also known as the second War of Independence , for some it may even be
known as the Forgotten War . It was an important conflict with long lasting consequences,
especially for the Native Americans in North America. The main cause of the war was America s
desire to expand its territory (history.com war of 1812). Just like everything else in America s
history people were greedy and always wanted more. More land equals more workers which
equals more money. Native Americans did not own land, land was known Mother Earth, everyone
shared all she had to offer, nothing was taken for granted, nothing was wasted, everything had its
own importance. When new settlers came to the Americas they were looking for new land, new
territory for their settlements. Some did not know that the land already had settlers; Natives. Think
of when you have visitors at your home, are you welcoming? Most of the time you are. That is
exactly how the natives were with these new settlers. Though they did not speak the same language
the natives offered a helping hand, just to get spit on in return. Not literally, but figuratively, the
new settlers seen natives as people that could be changed. So that s what they did, they tried to
assimilate the Indians teaching them the white man s ways. Many Indians did not know what was

How does Charlotte Brounte Create Sympathy For Jane In The First Two
Chapters Of The Novel?
Jane Eyre is a fictional autobiography which was written in 1848. It is about a young girl who is
abused and tortured by her aunt and cousins, (the people she lives with).
There are many ways that Charlotte Brounte creates sympathy for Jane in the first two chapters.
However the four main ways are: the setting, the language used, the structure of the chapters and
finally the social content.
In the first chapter, the setting is in a room where Jane is reading a book. The writer uses pathetic
fallacy in this chapter to describe the weather as well as how Jane is feeling. Chilly afternoons
describes the weather which was then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However in the second chapter, the setting changes from cold and damp to more of a gothic
setting which is quite frightening. It is in this chapter, where Jane is locked into the Red Room.
The reader would feel more sympathy for Jane at this point because the Red Room symbolises
death and scares Jane a lot, (which is shown by her resistance to going into it). In the Red Room
a gothic and mysterious feeling is presented to the reader. This is shown in the colours described
in the Red Room such as red , crimson , pink etc. All of these colours give Jane a dark feeling and
represent death and blood to her, as she already knows that her uncle s death had occurred in that
room. The atmosphere, that is created in that room is quiet and gives Jane the feeling of being
lonely. This creates sympathy as
Jane has no one and is alone. The Red Room overall creates darkness as the colours of the
furniture are darkly polished and the blinds on the windows are always drawn down . This adds
and emphasises the effect it has on Jane because she becomes more frightened.
Another way in which sympathy is created for Jane is through the language used to describe Jane
herself. Jane uses a lot of sarcasm when she describes her aunt and cousins. She uses words such as
mama and darlings whenever she speaks about them. This creates
sympathy

Original Sin Psychology
Evolutionary Psychology and Original Sin The Human Dark Side: Evolutionary Psychology and
Original Sin was written by Joseph Lee and M. Theol. This article is an attempt to supply such a
response by focusing on the distinctively Christian doctrine of original sin, which presents itself as
an especially likely candidate for support from evolutionary psychology. The Christian doctrine of
original sin makes more sense as evolutionary psychologists learn more about why people do bad
things. Christian responses to the developing field of evolutionary psychology tend to be defensive,
focusing on the task of showing that Christians have not been presented with any reason to abandon
any central beliefs of the Christian faith. A more positive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Original sin has been defined as the need for redemption by Christ that is universal to all human
beings and acquired through natural generation. Descent of all humans from a single couple
monoecism is not essential to the doctrine; the Catholic magisterium has continued to insist on it
simply in order to explain why all humans need to be saved. The requirement of natural
generation likewise sought only to account for the undeniable fact that the tendency to sin is
present in all of us, even prior to our first moral choices. It does not imply, in Augustinian
fashion, that sexuality is somehow the root of all evil. According to the article we do all sin
because we have all inherited from the very first living things on earth a powerful tendency to
act selfishly, no matter the cost to others. Free will enables us to override this tendency, but only
sporadically and with great effort; we more readily opt for self. This tendency in all of us is
what our tradition calls the stain of original sin. It is not the result of a fall in our prehistory,
since we were never more selfless than we are now. It is present even in infants, who are
undeniably self centered, though guiltless of actual sin. We incur guilt only when we freely choose

Cummings plays with jumbled syntax, a seemingly random rhyme scheme, and the paradox of non identical repetition to convey his message about the ordinariness of daily life, the passing of time, and the inclusive anonymity of people we encounter in our lives. Anyone Lived in a Pretty how Town describes the daily lives of the people who live in a certain, nameless town. The town is not named and neither are any of the townspeople, other than to give titles such as man, woman, child. These anonymous people living in the anonymous town do nothing notable; in fact, they are all fairly unremarkable as they go about their daily lives. The poem addresses all the seasons of life that the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Suicideis a serious issue that can have lasting results on individuals, families and communities. Although suicide rates decreased from 1990 2000, suicide is on the rise again and now the 10th leading cause of death in the US for all ages (SAVE | Suicide Facts. n.d.). Research Objectives The research completed by Shiv et al (2004), was to identify whether or not dysfunctions in neural systems controlling emotions could influence and promote individual s gambling abilities. Emotions can be either beneficial or detrimental to one s behaviour; it depends on what task is on hand and the individual differences. As previous research in neuroscience has highlighted the positive roles of emotions in everyday decision making, Shiv et al (2004) wanted to test out if individuals with dysfunctional emotional reactions could actually make better decisions than normal individuals. A specific scenario that brought curiosity to the researchers was how a patient with ventromedial prefrontal damage, an area responsible for fear, responded accurately to hazardous road conditions. Instead of becoming fearful and stepping on the breaks during icy roads, this individual lacked fear so the patient assessed the situation and responded properly. This patient with ventromedial prefrontal cortex damage handled the hazardous situation logically rather than emotionally, allowed him to react properly. Shiv et al (2004) are specifically looking at how dysfunctions in neural systems controlling emotions could affect gambling abilities. As normal individuals usually display a myopic loss aversion, high levels of risk aversion towards gambling, this study wants to detect if individuals with injuries with emotional brain circuitry systems would also have myopic loss ... It was also suggested by Angell(1913) that consciousness was best if forgotten and there should be a objective method of describing animal and human behavior but also believed that if it were to exist , it should definitely be of some use for an organism . The statement also suggests that it was not only John Watson the founder of behaviorism who proposed the idea rather it was thought about before him. His rise and influence was probably because of introducing the idea at a time when it could be accepted by the time and tide of that period. Psychology had been the study of mind from a very long time and was represented by the method of introspection defined as studying the mind by analyzing the thoughts. Angell s functionalism aimed to apply psychology and its methods to real life problems however the problem with both structuralism and functionalism was that the methods were not reliable and introspection was considered to be a problem rather than a solution. Psychology could not convince people of its usefulness and practical problem and the founder of behaviorism John Watson believed that both structuralism and functionalism were subjective and introduced behaviorism as objective. It examines how individuals evaluate themselves in relation to peers, groups, and/or social categories (Milkie, 1999). The main argument is that people compare themselves on many different dimensions with other individuals who are similar to them. Depending on the target of comparison, a person will usually judge themselves as being either or better or worse on some dimension. An upward comparison occurs when an individual compares himself or herself to someone who fares better than they do on a particular construct. Television, advertisements, magazines, and other forms of popular media provide a plethora of references for upward social comparison. Images in the media generally project a standard to which women are expected to aspire, yet that standard is almost completely impossible for most women to achieve (Schooler et al., 2004; Thompson Coovert, 1999). Women almost always fall short of standards that are expected of them regarding physical appearance. Particularly for women, it is difficult to go through a day without viewing images that send the message, you re not good enough. The pervasiveness of the media makes it very challenging for most women to avoid evaluating themselves against the sociocultural standard of beauty (Milkie, 1999). Most companies that target women in the media actually attempt to foster social comparison with idealized images, in order to motivate women to buy products that will bring them closer to the ideal (e.g. diet products, makeup, hair products). From fetal hormonal influences that determine expressed sex to nascent sexual discovery in toddlers, dramatic physical changes during puberty, and sexual partners in adulthood, sexuality follows us throughout every major developmental stage in life (some developmental stages even being defined by sexual changes, e.g. menarche, spermarche, and menopause). With sexuality being such an integral part of the human experience, it is no surprise, then, that various prominent thinkers have created theories based upon stages of human sexual development. Arguably one of the most influential theories of human sexual development are Sigmund Freuds stages of psychosexual development(Freud, 1905 /1962). While this entry seeks to give the reader an overview of Freud s theory of psychosexual development, it is also a worthwhile venture to include the environmental, societal and philosophical backgrounds which influenced Freud. It is also known that slavery was established in the history and economy of most countries. Even though it prospered during some periods and abstained in others, human bondage for profit has unfortunately, never been completely removed. Author Milton Meltzer, in his book Slavery, A World History follows this practice from prehistoric hunting societies; through the development of slave trading in the United States prior to the Civil War, it disturbingly reached a total number of four million slaves. He continues through the forced labor applied under the Nazi establishment and in the Soviet prison camps. And he concludes with the broad practice of slavery in many of the countries today, examples to include, women sold into prostitution in Thailand and the debt bondage that minors endure in Brazil. Many are often shocked to learn that historians have considered slavery as a step forward in the development of civilization. From the earliest times, it was customary ... • 27. A Look Into Game Theory Essay The origins of Game Theory trace back to a letter written by Francis Waldegrave in 1713 which proposed a minimax mixed strategy solution to a two person card game named le Her. In the following century Charles Darwin acted as one of the pioneers in broadening the realm of this theory into the biology of evolution as he applied the theoretic strategy in his argument of natural selection power to equalize the sex equilibrium ratio in nature. Game Theories initial applications were restricted to two person zero sum games where the pay off matrix was symmetric, or in other words that the sum of the payoffs to the two participants maintains a constant value. However, modern adaptations of game theorycame into play after John von Neumann... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If we apply the Nash equilibrium conditions into a situation where there exists an option for both players to cooperate or to be non cooperative, and none of these participants are aware of the other s decision, but still knows that she/he can choose either, we have started to establish conditions ideal for the Prisoner s dilemma. Here each party will look to adapt a dominant strategy, one that produces an outcome that is most beneficial to them regardless of the other party s strategy. Although it would be advantageous to each party if they both chose to cooperate, a decision is made when they each choose a non ideal outcome to protect themselves at the expense of the other party. Here is where the paradox is made; each participant has followed a completely logical thought process, yet finds themselves in a worse situation than the hypothetical situation in which they both cooperated. The logic that brings about this outcome comes from the uncertainty in the other party s decision. The dilemma s that often arise in the world of dating are extremely applicable to such modes of thinking. One of the most commonly occurring dilemma of dating and relationships is the decision to cooperate or not in the face of any sort of mistreatment. Essay on Amy Tan’s A Mother’s Tongue Amy Tan s A Mother s Tongue The purpose of Amy Tan s essay, Mother Tongue, is to show how challenging it can be if an individual is raised by a parent who speaks limited English (36) as Tan s mother does, partially because it can result in people being judged poorly by others. As Tan s primary care giver, her mother was a significant part of her childhood, and she has a strong influence over Tan s writing style. Being raised by her mother taught her that one s perception of the world is heavily based upon the language spoken at home. Alternately, people s perceptions of one another are based largely on the language used. Tan was born to a pair of Chinese immigrants. Her mother understood English extremely well, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was because her mother s version of English and its modified rules caused Tan to be confused on some of the questions. Tan employs cause and effect when she is talking about her experiences with IQ tests and the SATs. The fact that her mother spoke English the way she did made it very difficult for Tan to envision what the test was asking, as with the questions where she could not identify one singular correct answer. In her experience with language, maybe she had heard her mother would say something a certain way, even though, technically, it was not grammatically correct. Her perceptions of things, specifically the rules of language, were different because of the language used at her home. She also incorporates problem and solution when she is describing how she had to talk for her mother. Her belief is that people will not take you seriously if you do not speak proper English, and to prove this, she shows how her mother encountered that kind of attitude often. Tan describes how she had to call the stockbroker because her mother was concerned about not getting a check, and how the hospital would not look for a lost CAT scan until Tan was called to mediate. Even though the mother speaks English, Tan still needs to act as a translator. Compare and contrast comes in to play at the very beginning of the essay when Tan is describing her mother listening to her giving a lecture. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Alfred earned his through establishing stable change, peace and improvement. So too the Magna Carta, which brought about greater justice and freedom for the common man and limited royal influence. In the same ways, the reform act of 1832 warranted the title. It was by no means a revolutionary measure, nor the final solution of a great constitutional question as Russell had put it, but both symbolically and physically, it spelt change for Britain. The lords, however, declined the second bill by a majority of 41. On the very same day, rioting began in Derby and Nottingham and spread throughout England over the following days. Britain had never been so close to revolution in October 1831: with no police force (other than a minor presence in London), the army too small and too poorly trained to cope and rioting across the country, all the signs were in place for a rebellion in frustration of lack of reform. Nottingham castle was burnt down, Bristol Bishop s Palace was attacked, killing 12 and injuring 400, prisoners in Nottingham were set free, the church was specifically targeted (as 21 of 26 Bishops had voted against reform) and there were widespread disturbances and mass demonstrations. It was an important conflict with long lasting consequences, especially for the Native Americans in North America. The main cause of the war was America s desire to expand its territory (history.com war of 1812). Just like everything else in America s history people were greedy and always wanted more. Native Americans did not own land, land was known Mother Earth, everyone shared all she had to offer, nothing was taken for granted, nothing was wasted, everything had its own importance. Jane Eyre is a fictional autobiography which was written in 1848. It is about a young girl who is abused and tortured by her aunt and cousins, (the people she lives with). There are many ways that Charlotte Brounte creates sympathy for Jane in the first two chapters. However the four main ways are: the setting, the language used, the structure of the chapters and finally the social content. However in the second chapter, the setting changes from cold and damp to more of a gothic setting which is quite frightening. It is in this chapter, where Jane is locked into the Red Room. The reader would feel more sympathy for Jane at this point because the Red Room symbolises death and scares Jane a lot, (which is shown by her resistance to going into it). In the Red Room a gothic and mysterious feeling is presented to the reader. This is shown in the colours described in the Red Room such as red , crimson , pink etc. All of these colours give Jane a dark feeling and represent death and blood to her, as she already knows that her uncle s death had occurred in that room. The atmosphere, that is created in that room is quiet and gives Jane the feeling of being lonely. This creates sympathy as Jane has no one and is alone. The Red Room overall creates darkness as the colours of the furniture are darkly polished and the blinds on the windows are always drawn down . This adds and emphasises the effect it has on Jane because she becomes more frightened. Another way in which sympathy is created for Jane is through the language used to describe Jane herself. The Christian doctrine of original sin makes more sense as evolutionary psychologists learn more about why people do bad things. Original sin has been defined as the need for redemption by Christ that is universal to all human beings and acquired through natural generation. Descent of all humans from a single couple monoecism is not essential to the doctrine; the Catholic magisterium has continued to insist on it simply in order to explain why all humans need to be saved. The requirement of natural generation likewise sought only to account for the undeniable fact that the tendency to sin is present in all of us, even prior to our first moral choices. It does not imply, in Augustinian fashion, that sexuality is somehow the root of all evil. According to the article we do all sin because we have all inherited from the very first living things on earth a powerful tendency to act selfishly, no matter the cost to others. Free will enables us to override this tendency, but only sporadically and with great effort; we more readily opt for self. This tendency in all of us is what our tradition calls the stain of original sin. It is not the result of a fall in our prehistory, since we were never more selfless than we are now. It is present even in infants, who are undeniably self centered, though guiltless of actual sin. We incur guilt only when we freely choose to act on this tendency to the detriment of others.
