measure of gang misconduct represents the threat that particular gangs pose to prison order" (Gaes,

In order to find a solution for the problem the prison system took and is still taking steps such as
classifying the gang members and other violent inmates as security threat groups (STG's). Both
prison officials and law enforcement agencies refer to gangs as STG's rather than "gangs" in order to
take away from the assumptions and exposure that the word "gang" gets. There are several ways of
becoming classified as a security threat group, such as self–admission, known gang tattoos,
confiscation of STG paraphernalia, or information provided by an informant acknowledging the
inmate as a gang member. All known security threat groups are kept in single inmate cells known as
administration segregation to separate them from the rest of the inmate population, in hopes of
reducing the amount of communication between gang members and the amount violence. One

The first article I reviewed by John L Worrall and Robert G Morris discusses how gang membership
is linked with inmate misconduct (Worrall & Morris. 2012). John Worrall states that know "gang
members are more prone than non–gang members to act violent during the time of their
incarceration" (Worrall & Morris. 2012). Worrall and his team collected data on inmates from large
southern states and examine the inmate on inmate violence.
The data included the inmates personal information (address, birthplace, nicknames, ect,), and
criminal records. The data was also limited to inmates who were incarcerated in May 2004 and May
2006, serving three conservative years in a traditional facility, and who were not sentenced to life

A study done in 1996 on prisoners of the Arizona Department of Corrections, followed inmates for
the first 3 years of their incarceration. This study found that "inmates with no gang affiliation were
significantly less likely that those wit either street gang affiliation or prison gang affiliation to have
been guilty of a violent misconduct" (Griffin, 2006). Also noted in the Griffon study, inmates who
have a gang affiliation are less likely to participate in needed rehab and vocational programs that

rival gangs or people who don't like them. CBC News reported that in the last 5 years the numbers
of inmates who are affiliated with gangs has risen by 32%. Some people believe that prisons are the
breeding grounds for gang initiation and joining. Adult gang members in prison range from ages 18
to 65 years old. Many prison gang members are brainwashed. They are used to being fed, clothed,

Introduction
Prison gangs are originally formed by inmates as a way of protecting themselves from the other
inmates. These gangs have turned out to be violent and thus posing a threat to security. This paper
will have a look at the different gangs in prisons, their history, beliefs and missions, and the
differences and similarities in these gangs.
The Aryan Brotherhood
The Aryan Brotherhood started in 1964 was founded by Tyler Bingham and Barry Mills who were
white supremacists and Irish American bikers. It started at the San Quentin state prison. The prison
group was created to protect white prisoners from the black inmates. The cause changed into

This group is continuously growing both in the prison and also outside the prison. It has its
dominance mostly in state prisons especially the San Quentin prison.
The Black Guerrilla Family
The Black Guerrilla Family was started in the year 1966 by W.L. Nolen, Lester Jackson, James Carr
and other racist who were black in the San Quentin state prison in California. The founders adopted
the militia structure and ideology of the Symbionese Liberation Army. The gangs were started so as
to unite the black prisoners and get rid of a violent uprising. This uprising was believed to be from a
racist prison administration that was white. The gang attracted thousands black American offenders,
and was listed for a number of staff assaults and the murder of Marin County judge in 1970. Its
territory is in California and some selected areas in the United States. It also has a paramilitary kind
of structure. It has around 50,000 members. If one wants to join the gang, one has to be black and
must be nominated by an existing member. They have a symbol of a dragon that is attacking a gun
tower of a prison. This gang is still growing in most of the American prisons with some of its
members outside the confinement.

The Folk nation was founded in 1978, in Chicago, along with the People Nation. The Folk Nation
