Women s Role Of Women In Literature
Women in literature are depicted differently based on the culture in which they are immersed in.
Although almost all literature has a male protagonist, the women are always prevalent in the stories or
journeys of these male characters. The ultimate role of the female is to enhance the male protagonist s
image or character itself. The female character introduces predominantly evil, chaos, temptation and
desire, but also subtle themes of strength, loyalty, intelligence, patience, and determination. These
women are often depicted negatively and seen as property to the men in which they are married to or
in love with. Within different women there are also standards of beauty that are set. Mostly in the
Ramayana, a female outsider versus the cultured women are very different, reinforcing beautified
norms for women. All of these topics will be discussed to answer the overall question, what roles do
women play in literature? Women are constantly seen as sources and influences of chaos in ancient
literature. Looking at the Garden of Eden, Eve listens to the snake, showing her what temptation is,
taking the fruit from the tree of knowledge. This one temptation causes immense amounts of chaos for
Adam and Eve for the rest of the story. The temptation is shown through the female character
depicting the irresponsible and temptation filled stereotype of women clearly shown in literature.
Temptation is also seen through the eyes of Ravana when he abducts Sita in the Ramayana. This
introduction to temptation is stopped immediately by Sita laying down a blade of grass, physically
separating the two destroying any lust. The lust brought upon Ravana and many men in ancient
literature creates chaos in which in order to fulfill the man s lustful intentions, he must go against
dharma, the path of life or the principle of cosmic order. Not to mention these intentions themselves
are desires, again going against dharma. The Ramayana also shows how women introduce chaos with
the demoness character Surpanakha as she tried to seduce Rama. As Surpanakha falls in love with
Rama, she becomes animalistic and uncultured describing how she wants to eat Sita so that she will
have Rama all to herself. This animalistic chaos is how the text

What Does New Zealanders Spend Their Time At Sport And...
Complicating the Relationship Between
Sport, Culture and Identity
Sport is considered a heritage of British colonization in New Zealand. Although New Zealand is a
country with a small population; it has had a lot of success in sport. New Zealanders have acquired
numerous awards in various international competitions. An increasing number of people believe that
sport is integral to recognize the culture and national identity of New Zealand. The All Blacks (rugby)
and the Silver Ferns (netball) have become New Zealanders icons after they have been successful in
international competition. I will discuss the complicated relationship between sport, and national
identity. I will then refer sport to culture. Thirdly, I will describe how New Zealanders spend their time
at sport and leisure. And the last I will reveal the negative of sport.
The first point I would like to reflect on is that of the link between sport and national identity. New
Zealand has been defined as a sport orientated country. Phillips (2013) notes that sport making
solidarity among New Zealanders and pride in their country. He says sport is a significant form of
expressing nationalistic feelings for New Zealanders (Phillips, 2013). A thirteen year old boy Joe Scott
opened the door of nationalism of a long distance walking to New Zealand people, but the All Blacks
approaches the climax of national identity (Phillips, 2013). The All Blacks has been mentioned several
times in various articles as examples of

Heartbreaker vrs. Sweetheart Essay
Heartbreaker vrs. Sweetheart From my dating experiences in the past, I have come to realize that of all
the different guys that there are two main types. The first one I call the heartbreaker and the other is
the sweetheart. This observation, that I have made, is not based on appearance, and it is mostly based
on my own opinion.
When I was in high school I dated the football star, who was the most popular guy in school, and I
thought it was the best thing that could happen... until I got to know him. This guy was very
possessive, controlling, and extremely cocky. He was a heartbreaker type and luckily enough, I
realized that before it was too late! The typical heartbreaker type is usually a very aggressive, selfish
person. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of theses guys are scared of getting hurt, themselves, so they feel as if they re being protective
of themselves from being hurt by avoiding any kind of emotional attachment with a female. These
guys will also have low self esteems, but they hide this by pretending they love who they are, and
acting conceited. This in turn forces them to put others down to boost themselves up. This
heartbreaker guy is not respectful of the girls he dates. Some of these guys think of girls as being just
another name on their list of sexual accomplishments. I always try to avoid this kind of guy, but
sometimes it s hard to spot them out because they are very manipulative and deceitful.
Not all guys fall into that category, though. I have a loving boyfriend who is never selfish, hateful, or
uncaring. He is very trustworthy and I can count on him as my best friend as well as my partner in our
relationship. He is the kind of guy I call the sweetheart. This caring individual is honest, passive,
gentle, and most always trustworthy. You don t have to worry about this guy cheating on you, because
he is a one girl type of guy. The sweetheart doesn t rush into a relationship or into physical closeness.
This guy is a good listener and cares about his dating partner s life. You will find the parents of girls
who date this guy tend to always approve of him and even like him because he is respectful and has
good morals as well as good intentions. All

Lady Wang Alternate Ending
Xi feng had briefly thought about calling the Jia men to remove the willow, but had thought better of
it. When she was certain that Lady Wang had woken up and had her morning tea, Xi feng sent a page
to her. Intrigued by the idea of such a sight, Lady Wang had set off to that section of the property.
After exchanging their early morning greetings, the two turned their attention to the object on the
ground. Oh goodness. That was such a nasty storm last night. I remember briefly hearing the sound of
drums in my dreams, the Lady remarked. Yes, it was quite awful. I was woken up by the very same
lightning strike that had tore this old willow apart. Luckily, I was left in a better condition than this

The Olympic Hockey Game Between The Soviet Union And The...
The 1980 Olympic hockey game between the Soviet Union and the United States known as the
miracle on ice is the most incredible moments in recent American history due to the significance. The
United States was truly an underdog kind of like David and goliath, because no one expected the
United States to win against the soviets. The time in history is also important as the game took place
during the height of the cold war and these two nations that could break into nuclear war at anytime
had to face each other in a hockey game. This rivalry between the two countries transferred on to the
game and the result was amazing, at least for the United States.
In modern day America sports are a very important part of our culture, because we are constantly
watching sports and participating in sports. In any sport we watch mythology is present. The very act
itself of playing the sport is reflective of old roman times when gladiators would kill for the crowds
entertainment although today instead of killing its by hitting a home run or scoring a goal. At their
best, sports are about the extraordinary capacities of the human spirit. (Wolter). These athletes can
become extremely popular to the point were they are viewed as superhuman just like in myths, and
there is a reason because the best athletes in their respective sport do what no average person could do.
The most legendary performances speak of almost super human feats: the sub 4 minute mile, Michael

The Crucible Scapegoat Analysis
You turn on CNN and begin catching up on the latest news on a recent shooting. You hear them
blaming certain ethnic groups for being behind this tragic shooting. Although they do not know the
person that did it, their first instinct is to place the blame on them. Throughout history, there have been
multiple ways that every culture has used a type of a scapegoat. Scapegoat: a person who is blamed
for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency. In Arthur
Miller s The Crucible, the use of a scapegoat was the blaming of women in Salem, Massachusetts for
being a witch or worshipping the Devil. In the book, there were numerous girls accused, a few men,
and multiple deaths. There were thirty three deaths total, one man, Giles Corey. Nineteen were
hanged, and thirteen died while serving time in prison. All of these deaths were the causes of the
scapegoat. They were falsely accused of witchcraft when there was no proof that they performed these
acts. Scapegoats were used because the people of Salem were terror stricken, in today s society, there
are multiple forms of scapegoats: rape, Middle Eastern people, and WWII that people use due to
trepidation. In the recent Twittersphere, there were article links about how a female accused a male of
raping her. He served time, then years later she came out and proclaimed that it was a lie. By doing
this, it makes her seem ignorant. This case ruined the man s life and made him waster years of his

makes it seem like the palace just twists the laws for their own benefit. As the novel continues, Kyra

A Room of Oneā€™s Own and Modern Fiction Essay
A Room of One s Own and Modern Fiction
One of the first things to notice about A Room of One s Own is that it is not a typical lecture. It
rambles and flows back and forth, in and out. It is more narrative than logic. It breaks many of the
conventions of a formal address. Why does Virginia Woolf choose to do this? Why choose this style,
this method? One reason is to turn predominantly masculine, or traditional, thinking on its head in
order to undermine its authority. There is another reason for her approach, however one that rises from
her most basic ideas about what literature and writing should be and do. Her ideas about what makes
for good writing are contained in this text, if indirectly. Grasping these ideas allows the ... Show more

Part of the power of A Room of One s Own is its ability to engage the depths of human psychology
where logical analysis and rhetoric might fail to do so.
Though the problems with which Woolf is presented in A Room of One s Own are significantly
attached to historical problems, her main role in the work is as a literary critic rather than historian,
though on the surface she does not seem to say much about style, method and criticism in it. She
mentions Jane Austen s sentences, how material concerns influence writers, a few words about the
structure of the novel and that fiction is like a spider s web (Woolf, AROO 35). These themes seem to
be contained in greater detail throughout the work, but hidden, just beneath the surface. There are
other places, however, where Woolf speaks more directly about the aims and methods of writing. In
her 1925 essay, Modern Fiction, she claims that it is Life that good writing must search for and
somehow capture. She writes: Life is not a series of gig lamps symmetrically arranged; but a luminous
halo, a semi transparent envelope surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end (287
88). Life is like the sea, with its ebb and flow; it is like a river, constantly changing, yet always the
same. Navigating these waters is the ultimate goal of writing for her, but this alone does not account
for her use of the subjective, of impressions, in her own

Nationalism and Sectionalism in America During the Late...
America was founded by multiple states, from different regions and subsequently different styles of
life, which made the possibility of their union unstable and uncertain. But, because they were united
by a common goal to break free of Britain s despotic sovereignty the American colonies were able to
win their independence from Britain and become the United States of America. This dichotomy
between the states different styles of life and their shared goal laid the foundation for the forces of
nationalism and sectionalism in the US. The two opposing forces worked hand in hand to manipulate
Americans views of one another and the American political and economic systems, though the force
of sectionalism outweighed the force of nationalism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War, increased sectionalism in the US because it did
not resolve the impressment of American sailors, which was one of the main causes of the war.
Overall, the War of 1812 was a huge proponent of nationalism in the US, and that nationalistic feeling
carried over into the Era of Good Feelings, bringing about a shift in politics as well as Americans
national identity.
The Era of Good Feelings was a product of and contributed to the force of nationalism in America,
characterized by many changes in America s politics and internal affairs. The Federalist Party
disintegrated because of the widespread criticism of the Hartford Convention during and after the War
of 1812, making the Democratic Republican Party the only political party. This meant that the old
party animosities and tension would disappear, and there would be less political sectionalism in the
government. The Democratic Republicans underwent changes as well, like their party policies. The
party became focused on obtaining a monopoly of government patronage, using fundraisers and
events to gain support from the people. During this era, there was an increase in internal
improvements, as seen with the American System, an economic plan that consisted of three parts. The
first part was a tariff that would protect and promote American industry, known as the Tariff of
Abominations by the Southern states, who were inconvenienced by the tariff. The

The story Flight Patterns by Sherman Alexie features a Native American of the Spokane Indian Tribe
that faces troubles with post 9/11 attacks. Alexie concentrates his story with remarks expressing the
emotional feelings of the American view of people with a medium to dark complexion. Alexie brings
contrast between two worlds. William, the main character, demonstrates the American view of people
who are perceived as a terrorist. Then, Fedaku, William s taxi driver, whom demonstrates the view of
a foreigner with a different life. Neither one of these men fit the profile of a terrorist, but is almost
always treated as a threat because of their appearance. For example William experiences and realizes

Every time William is at the airport, he scans for little brown guys who reeked of fundamentalism
(Alexie 270). White Americans always gave William dirty looks, yet he was no different. Because
William is of Indian descent, he often gets characterized as a terrorist, but he also characterized a lot
of other people that looked the same way as him. The whole world relies on mass media because it is
today s way of retrieving information about the world. The media can either make you or break you.
In this case, the media made all people of color look like terrorists blaming them for actions of others.
Muslims are blamed for 9/11, and even though William is not a Muslim, he is stereotyped as a terrorist
because of his physical features. For example the invisibility of Native Americans in mass media
provides a unique vantage point for examining how media representations impact both identity and
self understanding (Leavitt) which means whenever you do see a Native American on media, they are
most likely shown as 19th or 18th century figures. Or they are stereotyped as poor, uneducated, and
prone to addictions (Leavitt) but in this case William is the exact opposite, yet he still gets stereotyped
as a different race because he does not meet the requirements for his own race. Not only is William
stereotyped but so is Fekadu, William s taxi driver. Fekadu is a Muslim Oramo member from Ethiopia,
yet people think [he is] black, they don t see [him] as a terrorist, only as a crack head addict on
welfare. Once again we are seeing someone being misjudged by their physical appearance even
though they are nowhere near the misinterpretations. Whichever type of media you look at, the
majority, if not all of them are unfavorable when it comes to the portraying of racial/ethnic groups.
These groups are always stereotyped and based on the racist actions done

The Library Of Alexandria Campus Library
The main goal of libraries, are to teach students how to make use of the resources. The library of
NVCC dedicates itself into helping students at the Alexandria campus. That is why it provides a wide
range of sources that aids its students. Whether it is for a class, a job, or a research, the library has the
materials they need to execute their work. In the words of Robert Putnam, a political scientist who
teaches at Harvard University, he said that People may go to the library looking mainly for
information, but they find each other there. To clarify what is said, people may use the library for
information; but due to the materials that they found in their research, they realize that if they made
use of the library for their previous works, they would have met the requirements that were needed.
The argument presented on this paper, is that the Alexandria campus library has a great effect on
students in terms of helping them meet their academic goals. Although, there are some modifications it
needs to make it better and more user friendly. One thing the NOVA library does, is that it gives
students a connection to a greater academic community. There are fifty computers provided in the
library for students to execute their work. Students can come in at anytime and make use of them. The
staff at the library consists of twelve people, that are working to make a positive effect on those
students who are making use of the library. Four of those people are faculty member,

Grapes Of Wrath By John Ford
Acceptance Humans always want to find a place where they can be assimilated. Humans want to live
in a community that they can assimilate into comfortably and can feel safe in easily. Grapes of Wrath,
directed by John Ford, which portrays the story of capitalist and environmental forces pushing a poor
family off their land and their migration to California. The family tries to look for a place where they
can secure jobs and food to support themselves daily. Similarly, the El Norte, directed by Gregory
Nava, is about a brother and a sister who have to escape from their government in their village to the
USA. Both Grapes of Wrath and El Norte argue that humans are not accepted unless they are
welcomed, able to survive, and allowed to stay there. In Grapes of Wrath, Joad s family is not
welcomed in the environment or the company. When Tom Joad is on the way home, the destructed
family s house scene illustrates that the environment does not welcome them to live there. In the
image, some dead trees have dried out on the sandy ground. Darkness covers the whole view of this
scene with the sound of the wind howling. The wind carries a lot of sand, showing that this place is
solitary, and that nature has moved on from the land. They cannot plant or harvest fruit from the trees
or crops on their land. In addition, as if being on useless land was not bad enough, the Shawnee Land
and Cattle Company who owned the lands forced them off. The scene with many caterpillar tractors

Medic Vs Emt Research Paper
Medic VS. EMT
You are a bystander to an accident on the road. You notice a person pleading for help as they are
screaming in pain, what do you do? Well, it honestly depends on which profession you have chosen:
Medic or EMT? When I compare being a Medic in the United States Military to being a civilian EMT;
I think that being a Medic is better. Upon comparing the credentials and future availability to attain
additional credentials, individual capabilities, and impact on health of those treated, I believe that you
too will agree with the idea that being a Medic is more beneficial.
First, we will discuss being a Civilian EMT. To be an EMT an individual must complete an EMT
program through a technical school or college. After completion of the course the individual is
required to pass a state test. After passing the state ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Auditors are required by GAAS to understand their clients incentives and to search for differences
between actual and expected performance that may indicate misstatements, so the auditors who
participated in our study were relatively well positioned to identify speciļ¬c instances of earnings
management. Because respondents provided transaction level data about attempts covering a range of
ļ¬nancial accounting transactions, including attempts that are purely judgmental as well as attempts
that involve transaction structuring, these data allow us to examine how attempts are affected by the
precision of ļ¬nancial accounting standards2 and by other characteristics of attempts. Unlike studies
that focus on only postaudit information, we consider separately managers decisions about how to
attempt earnings management and auditors decisions about whether to require adjustments.3 Thus, our
study provides evidence about how a key feature of accounting standards (precision of rules) and a
key feature of the ļ¬nancial reporting process (activity of external auditors) inļ¬‚uence earnings
management. Results of descriptive analyses indicate that the earnings management attempts in our
sample occurred in numerous accounting areas, including revenue recognition, business combinations,
intangibles, ļ¬xed assets, investments and leases, but by far the most frequently identiļ¬ed attempts
involve reserves. Respondents believe that managers attempts were motivated

Cats vs. Dogs Essay
Cats vs. Dogs
Are you a cat person or a dog person? In the age old schism of cats versus dogs, there has always been
a debate for both sides. No matter what side is taken there will always be a debate about which animal
is superior.
People choose pets based on a certain kinship they feel with the animal. Now, perhaps cat lovers are
uptight, but they don t choose to claim kinship with a creature whose first act upon meeting a new
member of its own kind is to sniff its behind. There is also the problem of dignity and discrimination
as in, dogs have none. Where s the discrimination in an animal so mindlessly arduous that its

Owning an animal can take up a lot of time. For most people time is of the essence, and spending a lot
of time on an animal is unrealistic . Cats are able to live without their owners for days on end. They
can usually find something to eat, and pee if plants for example. But dogs need to be put in kennels
and looked after by another person. Dogs also have to be put on leashes when they are outside. Cats
have the ability to roam freely because their owners do not have to worry about them causing a lot of
trouble. A cat is allowed to be outside until late hours because owners know that the feline will make

Practicality and simplicity help animal owners decide what type of animal they should own. If your

Watches In The Military
Egyptian and Babylonian astronomers used the sundial as a primitive form of today s smart watch.
Train conductors have utilized pocket watches to maintain a tight and precise schedule due to their
accurate time keeping. Watches in the military have components such as tachometers, barometers, and
atomic timekeepers that aid in more than just timekeeping. Wall Street uses watches to coordinate
trades and exchanges in stock. Watches are depended upon all over the world without being thought of
as much. When a wristwatch is used every day continually its value doubles not only in sentimental
value, but the rarity of the timepiece increases.

Introduction
The purpose of this report is to analyze and illustrate the geographical origins of eragrostis tef along
with details of its global dispersion. The common name of the crop in Ethiopia is tef. It was chosen for
its cultural significance and it s importance
Background
In Ethiopia, about 4.9 million acres of land is devoted to its production every year. From 2003 2005
production statistics indicated that tef accounted for about 29% of the land and 20% of the gross grain
production of all major cereal cultivation in the country (National Research Council).
Eragrostis tef belongs to the grass family Poaceae, and is species of Eragrostis. It contains about 350
species and tef is the only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of tef was quite crucial for the Abyssinians, since the amount of tef seed required to plant
were hundreds of times smaller than that of wheat (Ingram). This productive potential and minimal
time and seed requirements have protected them from hunger when their food supply was under attack
from numerous invaders in the past.
It was reported by Unger in 1866 that tef seeds were also found in the Egyptian Pyramid of Dashur in
3359 BC (National Research Council). Dried tef straws were suggested to have been used in the
making of mud bricks used in the Pyramid of Dashur as well (Seyfu).
The closest wild relative to tef is generally considered to be eragrostis pilosa this species is recorded
as an annual growing weed from Eritrea and Northern regions of Ethiopia (Ingram).
Vavilov has recognized Ethiopia as the center of origin and variety of tef (National Research Council).
Due to the fact that several widespread and non widespread species of eragrostis, some of which are
considered the wild relatives of tef, are found in Ethiopia. Since the genetic diversity for tef does not
exist anywhere else in the world except in Ethiopia, confirms that tef originated and was

This document details the plan for an observation tower to be constructed on the Zenda Farms
property. The document includes the development plan for the tower, some programming ideas to be
associated, a competitive analysis of surrounding land, a critical risk analysis of the tower, a cost
analysis of the designs, and a management plan for the final construction.
2 Development Plan
2.1 Roles and Responsibilities
The Observation Tower central design team consists of six people: Abbi D Angelo (Project Leader),
Ryan Azer (Internal Communications Expert), Joshua Cirillo (Secretary), Ashanti Fleming (ADA and

The tower will be constructed by a contractor and construction team, so all materials will be procured
and handled by them. Zenda will be in charge of posting interpretive signage around/on top of the
tower, and the children programming team will be in charge of incorporating the tower as a destination
for their activities.
3 Programming Ideas
3.1 Programming 1 Interpretive Signage
The first programing concept involves interpretive signage. This would be a short term project with no
permanent staffing requirements. The initial outlay would just be the cost of the signs themselves
coming to somewhere in ball park of $500. The goal would to be have theses signs on the top of tower
in such a way that they can help provide information about what can be seen without obstructing the
views. Things the might describe include local flora and fauna such as the birds and bees or landmarks
like the farmhouse ruins.
3.2 Programming 2 Scavenger Hunt Destination
The scavenger hunt is intended to get young kids exploring the farm and seeing all it has to offer. At

The Education Of The United States Essay
The Education Revolution
Currently, the United States is ranked 14th in its educational standard, 17th in educational
performance and 24th in literacy (Mark). Compared to the rest of the world, we are behind countries
like Poland, China, Finland and New Zealand. For a country that prides itself on its successful western
society, what is stopping us from having an education system to match the standards we have put on
the rest of our amenities. However, a solution is closer than it seems. According to Rasmussen
College, there are 6.7 million students currently enrolled in online courses, therefore with an
increasing number of students attending these classes, it is not a question on whether or not these
classes will become normal, but when and how these classes will revolutionize our education system
(Bird). Online courses offer students the ability to create an education based around their schedule,
and allow students who may struggle or may not be able to attend a traditional school environment the
chance to have an equal education. Not only can the students benefit from an online education
environment, but both schools and professors can gain from an online system. Moreover, such courses
can help create a global education system that allows anyone to have the same access to an education
anywhere in the world as long as they have a connection to the internet.
Online classes allow students to create a flexible schedule for students with jobs and busy home lives
and can

Bushs Tax Cut Essay
There are two words in the English language that when combined will cause immediate joy and
skepticism at the same time. Tax Cut, although at first it sounds only good there can be some setbacks.
George W. Bush entered his term in office with an aggressive agenda to cut taxes that turned heads in
his favor; however, some people don t think his cuts are fair or effective.
The United States economy is slowly creeping towards a recession. The stock market has shown
repeated drops. Consumers are not purchasing and even savings and loans are down for fear of a huge
economic crash. The only bright spot is a housing market that refuses to yield as apparently consumers
are still positive enough to purchase houses. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His plan is to totally cut 1.6 trillion dollars in the next ten years and he even leaves open the
possibility of a 60 billion dollar reduction this year alone. Bush is confident that this plan is sound and
very workable thanks to a 5.6 trillion dollar surplus that is being predicted. Overall the Bush plan
would reduce marginal tax rates for about 2.9 million of the 13.9 million working families with
children that now get the earned income tax credit. Another 2.6 million families would get tax
reductions or large tax rebates even though their marginal tax rates would not be affected. the current
federal income tax system does not tax the earnings of low income working families with children, but
this is only true for very low income families, the lowest five percent in fact. Bush s plan would
increase this to about the lowest eight or nine percent. Bush states that his plan would encourage hard
work in the average American household because the more overtime a person works the more their
taxes are cut on that extra pay. Many Americans hope that Bush s plan will be passed and that they can
enjoy one of the largest tax cuts in recent history. Economists are hoping that the cut is just what the
economy needs to jumpstart the consumers.
Despite the mainly positive outlook towards Bush s new plans many economist are very skeptic of

Modern Day Slavery Is A Thing Of The Past We Read About...
Introduction
Many of Americans believe that slavery is a thing of the past we read about in text books during a
history lesson. However, today there exists a form of modern day slavery in America called sex
trafficking. A startling 14,588 cases in America of Sex Trafficking have been reported since 2007, and
these are only the cases that have been reported (Polaris, 2016). There is currently a mass market and
financial gain for the selling and purchasing of a Sex Trafficking victim. Our homeless youth,
domestic violence victims, and members of the LGBTQ community are among the most targeted of
victims (Polaris, 2016). They are coerced into believing there is a better life for them, with the grass is
greener on the other side view being perceived. Education of what perpetrators look for, who they are,
as well as who is targeted needs to be achieved when raising and speaking to youth. Our children must
be equipped with proper knowledge to know what signs to look for and to be aware of. Unfortunately,
the United State has become accustomed and used to this type of rape culture. Main stream images of
hyper sexed individuals flood the media. Pornography is just a click away. We live in a place where
young men are growing up thinking that purchasing sex from a prostitute is perfectly acceptable. With
the average age of a child entering into prostitution being 13 years old, the victim is publicly shamed
and looked down upon. Sex Traffickers target young girls and

EAW And Due Process Analysis
Werhane and Radin s theory holds that employees and employers alike are allowed to end their
employment For a good cause, for no cause, or even for causes morally wrong (pp.255) without being
penalized for doing so. So essentially, the employer may terminate an employee s service for any of
the above and the employee at the same time can quit their jobs for any of the above without having to
give notice and not be penalized for it. While employees in the private sector have no rights to due
process or appeal an employment decision since they are under at will ; employees in the public sector
have guaranteed rights for due process. Even though, EAW does not utilize due process and is till
upheld in State and Federal courts Wall Street Journal has it on good authority that courts have ruled
in favor or employees 67% of wrongful discharge (pp.255). The text also points to the rationale behind
EAW and Due process and demonstrates that Werhane is a more sympathetic of/ proponent of Due
process doctrine rather than EAW. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to him, EAW is an American law that safeguards the employee and the employer defining
their relationships and protecting one against the other. He premised that either the employer or the
employee are free to break their contract with any advance warning stating that Freedom of contract is
an aspect of individual liberty every bit as freedom of speech or freedom in marriage selection of a life
partner ... (pp.260). He argues that not only does contract at will encourage the freedom of association,
fosters employee flexibility, ensures cost for hiring and firing are drastically reduced, it is also ensures
there is a level playing field for when employees/employers bargain. Since employee can do the same
thing, then it follows that it is balanced, for according to Epstein, the employee is open and free to
work with anyone they so

My Complicated Family History
The mix of my complicated family history and my strong supportive mother have shaped me into the
person that I am today. My biological father, Clint, battled with a secret drug addiction that my sweet
mother knew nothing about until it was too late. When I was only a year old, the drug addiction had
gotten the best of Clint and he made the decision to take his own life, leaving me and my mother heart
broken. Clint s choices impacted my life in such ways that I cannot explain. Growing up, it was just
me and my mother until I was four, however, in this time we took the bad situation that we were in
and we did not let it get the best of us. We chose to move forward and to take positive things from this
horrific time. We learned through this experience that life goes on. No matter how hard the situation
is, you must move on. Learning this mentality at such a young age has taught me that I cannot fret the
small things, I have to look at the bigger picture because that is what really matters. My mother is
truly such an amazing woman and her guidance has shaped me into the young woman that I am. We
have battled through so many hardships together but she has always taught me that I can and will get
through everything life throws at me. My mother could have chosen to give up when my biological ...

that he never went to hell (272). She clearly valued sex as the most important attribute of a husband
for, ...in our bed he was so fresh and gay....Heaven knows whenever he wanted it my belle chose ,
thought he had beaten me in every bone... (272) Even though her final husband had beaten her,
because he was good in bed with her she felt she loved him the best of them all (272). Clearly, The
Wife of Bath valued three things in her marriages, sex, power, and money. In her tale we find that
power is an important role to women in marriage. A knight, after raping a women is spared by a queen
(282) but in order to save his life, he has one year (283) to find, What is the thing that women most
desire (282)? After searching, he finds no answer but on his way home finds an old women who
promises she will save him, he must promise to do what she asks of him after however, and he agrees
(285). When he and the old lady meet with the queen, he exclaimed, A women want s the self
sovereignty over her husband as over her lover, and master him; he must not be above her (286). This
answer is perfectly inline with The Wife of Baths views, she always wants to be more powerful than
her husband. When the old lady says he must marry her, he protests but soon she offers him two
choices, he can have her be old and ugly till she dies, but loyal, or she can be young and pretty and
take chance that she might not remain faithful (291). He gives his answer to be that she may choose,

Theme Of Death In The Epic Of Gilgamesh
The Mesopotamian understanding of death is uniquely different from modern understandings in that
the Mesopotamians lacked a belief in their own free will. The Mesopotamian epic poem, The Epic of
Gilgamesh, can, as a result of both the theology and cosmogony of the civilization, be viewed as the
first literary meditation on death and the human condition. The hero of the epic, Gilgamesh, through a
metaphorical self death, via the death of his only equal, Enkidu, can begin to comprehend the idea of
death. The Epic of Gilgamesh, above all else, is a reflection on mortality and the human place in the
cosmos.
Gilgamesh is two thirds (Gilgamesh 61) god, and, as a result of this, lives with a sense of invincibility.
The idea of death, of ceasing to exist in his temporal form, does not originally frighten him, as it does
Enkidu, who is able to grasp the true nature of existence because of his bestial nature. Raised among
beasts and the wilderness, death is a very real and very present threat to Enkidu. Though Gilgamesh is
aware that only the gods live forever (71) while men s days are numbered (71), his understanding of
his place in the cosmos is limited. Gilgamesh is unable to comprehend that though he is part god, he is
not a god, and therefore, is subject to mortal laws and constraints. This is evident by his conduct prior
to the arrival of Enkidu, when he behaves monstrously. His lust leaves no virgin to her lover (62), and
sounds the tocsin for his amusement (62).

The Successes and Failures of the Zapatista Movement Essay
The Successes and Failures of the Zapatista Movement
On January 1, 2004, over one thousand people in the mountain hamlet of Oventic, Chiapas, celebrated
the 10th anniversary of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) rebellion with song and
dance. Thus, it seems a fitting time to take stock of the successes and failures of the Zapatista
movement in the context of its original goals. While the EZLN has been able to establish thirty eight
autonomous indigenous communities in Chiapas, it has failed to weaken the Mexican government s
commitment to neo liberal economic policies. In the following pages, we will explore those factors
which enabled the Zapatistas to establish regions of autonomy and extrapolate from Theotonio Dos ...

refusal to take money from the mal gobierno (bad government).? In addition, the Zapatistas have
created five organizational centers (caracoles) and established Juntas of Good Government in each of
them in order to ?resolve conflicts and disequilibrium between the centers and the outlying
autonomies.? The caracoles mark the EZLN?s first success with regional, as opposed to municipal,
autonomy. These Zapatista achievements can be attributed to the local terrain of Chiapas, restrictive
legislation, and local and national scrutiny.
The Mexican government has faced legal and practical restraints on launching an all out war on the
Zapatistas. The first government counter attacks encountered tactical difficulties in the jungles of
Chiapas and the army failed to score a quick military victory. In 1995, the federal congress passed a ?
law for dialogue,? which foreclosed the option of a unilateral show of force by the Mexican army in
areas under Zapatista control. This legislation catalyzed the signing of the San AndrƩs Accords by the
EZLN and the Zedillo government. The San AndrƩs Accords, as well as the inaccessibility of the
jungles of Chiapas, made overt military action politically and tactically unviable. The EZLN?s
national popularity and visibility also guaranteed its survival. Though the Mexican government

Summary Of The Wayzata High School Auditorium
The Wayzata High School auditorium had been transformed into an art museum full of Caleb s
paintings. There was a long table covered with hundreds of candles and matchbooks. An adjacent table
displayed a guest book where friends and family wrote down messages and prayers. The pastor from
the Miller s church distributed flyers about Caleb and suggested prayers to help him and his family
through this difficult time. Dr. Reynolds opened the pamphlet and scanned down the back of the front
page. As his eyes glanced over, he was surprised to see the last section dedicated entirely to Becca and
her struggle. He read every word. The Coopers and the Millers were quietly conversing with the
Davenports in a small circle far across the auditorium. Cathy was gushing to Mrs. Miller about what a
wonderful and brave son she had and how much their family owed him and Matt for saving Ashley.
Matt, Miranda, Ashley and George congregated with twenty other friends discussing the added weight
they all felt when hearing about Becca s condition. Paige stood fifteen feet away with a group of
friends, sobbing uncontrollably in Marcy s arms. The auditorium was already packed, and people were
still pouring in. Dr. Reynolds main objective for the evening was to appear concerned. There were
plenty of other doctors and nurses from Methodist in attendance and to cast suspicion away from
himself, he needed to be amongst them. Making sure to stop and shake hands with many of his

##m And Discrimination In Gloria Naylor s Black Men And...
Racism and discrimination towards those of African descent can be hard topics to discuss, especially
since America still experiences the discriminatory effects of slavery. The history and fundamentals of
slavery has created a rift between whites and blacks that is seemingly impossible to overcome. There
has been and will be lasting social effects including racial slurs and misconceptions based on how the
world views African Americans. Brent Staples, in Black Men and Public Space, details his experience
being treated unfairly due to his racial status. Gloria Naylor s Mommy, what does Nigger Mean?
discusses the authors first time being called the N word, how she felt, and how she asked her mom
about what it meant. Brent Staples Black Men and Public Space , and Gloria Naylor s Mommy, what
does Nigger Mean? are similar through the authors accounts of being treated poorly because of their
African descent along with ways to cope with that oppression, and contrast through their tone in the
intro and through there experience of being discriminated against and overall effect on the reader.
Both authors explore examples in which they are treated in a racist or discriminatory manner. Brent
Staples encountered a younger woman and came upon her late one evening on a deserted street... she
cast back a worried glance... picked up her pace and was soon running in earnest. (Staples 1) Just the
mere sight of him made the woman scared, after this experience he feels surprised, embarrassed, and
dismayed all at once. Her flight made me feel like an accomplice in tyranny. (2) He realizes that he is
indistinguishable from the muggers... (2), or at least to the woman. Staples experiences, first hand,
discrimination; the woman is fearful of him because of his race, and Staples feels the full effect of
that. Gloria Naylor recounts the first time she was ever called the N word. It was in class and she she
says she couldn t have been more puzzled. She didn t know what a nigger was, but she did know it
was something he shouldn t have called her (Naylor 3). She was thoroughly confused and later asked
her mother what the word meant. Naylor is treated poorly due to the color of her skin. Similarly to

  • 2. Women s Role Of Women In Literature Women in literature are depicted differently based on the culture in which they are immersed in. Although almost all literature has a male protagonist, the women are always prevalent in the stories or journeys of these male characters. The ultimate role of the female is to enhance the male protagonist s image or character itself. The female character introduces predominantly evil, chaos, temptation and desire, but also subtle themes of strength, loyalty, intelligence, patience, and determination. These women are often depicted negatively and seen as property to the men in which they are married to or in love with. Within different women there are also standards of beauty that are set. Mostly in the Ramayana, a female outsider versus the cultured women are very different, reinforcing beautified norms for women. All of these topics will be discussed to answer the overall question, what roles do women play in literature? Women are constantly seen as sources and influences of chaos in ancient literature. Looking at the Garden of Eden, Eve listens to the snake, showing her what temptation is, taking the fruit from the tree of knowledge. This one temptation causes immense amounts of chaos for Adam and Eve for the rest of the story. The temptation is shown through the female character depicting the irresponsible and temptation filled stereotype of women clearly shown in literature. Temptation is also seen through the eyes of Ravana when he abducts Sita in the Ramayana. This introduction to temptation is stopped immediately by Sita laying down a blade of grass, physically separating the two destroying any lust. The lust brought upon Ravana and many men in ancient literature creates chaos in which in order to fulfill the man s lustful intentions, he must go against dharma, the path of life or the principle of cosmic order. Not to mention these intentions themselves are desires, again going against dharma. The Ramayana also shows how women introduce chaos with the demoness character Surpanakha as she tried to seduce Rama. As Surpanakha falls in love with Rama, she becomes animalistic and uncultured describing how she wants to eat Sita so that she will have Rama all to herself. This animalistic chaos is how the text ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. What Does New Zealanders Spend Their Time At Sport And... Complicating the Relationship Between Sport, Culture and Identity Sport is considered a heritage of British colonization in New Zealand. Although New Zealand is a country with a small population; it has had a lot of success in sport. New Zealanders have acquired numerous awards in various international competitions. An increasing number of people believe that sport is integral to recognize the culture and national identity of New Zealand. The All Blacks (rugby) and the Silver Ferns (netball) have become New Zealanders icons after they have been successful in international competition. I will discuss the complicated relationship between sport, and national identity. I will then refer sport to culture. Thirdly, I will describe how New Zealanders spend their time at sport and leisure. And the last I will reveal the negative of sport. The first point I would like to reflect on is that of the link between sport and national identity. New Zealand has been defined as a sport orientated country. Phillips (2013) notes that sport making solidarity among New Zealanders and pride in their country. He says sport is a significant form of expressing nationalistic feelings for New Zealanders (Phillips, 2013). A thirteen year old boy Joe Scott opened the door of nationalism of a long distance walking to New Zealand people, but the All Blacks approaches the climax of national identity (Phillips, 2013). The All Blacks has been mentioned several times in various articles as examples of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Heartbreaker vrs. Sweetheart Essay Heartbreaker vrs. Sweetheart From my dating experiences in the past, I have come to realize that of all the different guys that there are two main types. The first one I call the heartbreaker and the other is the sweetheart. This observation, that I have made, is not based on appearance, and it is mostly based on my own opinion. When I was in high school I dated the football star, who was the most popular guy in school, and I thought it was the best thing that could happen... until I got to know him. This guy was very possessive, controlling, and extremely cocky. He was a heartbreaker type and luckily enough, I realized that before it was too late! The typical heartbreaker type is usually a very aggressive, selfish person. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of theses guys are scared of getting hurt, themselves, so they feel as if they re being protective of themselves from being hurt by avoiding any kind of emotional attachment with a female. These guys will also have low self esteems, but they hide this by pretending they love who they are, and acting conceited. This in turn forces them to put others down to boost themselves up. This heartbreaker guy is not respectful of the girls he dates. Some of these guys think of girls as being just another name on their list of sexual accomplishments. I always try to avoid this kind of guy, but sometimes it s hard to spot them out because they are very manipulative and deceitful. Not all guys fall into that category, though. I have a loving boyfriend who is never selfish, hateful, or uncaring. He is very trustworthy and I can count on him as my best friend as well as my partner in our relationship. He is the kind of guy I call the sweetheart. This caring individual is honest, passive, gentle, and most always trustworthy. You don t have to worry about this guy cheating on you, because he is a one girl type of guy. The sweetheart doesn t rush into a relationship or into physical closeness. This guy is a good listener and cares about his dating partner s life. You will find the parents of girls who date this guy tend to always approve of him and even like him because he is respectful and has good morals as well as good intentions. All ... When she was certain that Lady Wang had woken up and had her morning tea, Xi feng sent a page to her. Intrigued by the idea of such a sight, Lady Wang had set off to that section of the property. After exchanging their early morning greetings, the two turned their attention to the object on the ground. Oh goodness. That was such a nasty storm last night. I remember briefly hearing the sound of drums in my dreams, the Lady remarked. Yes, it was quite awful. I was woken up by the very same lightning strike that had tore this old willow apart. Bao yu cradled the cat in his arms, and he and Dai yu set out to Grandma Jia, who he was sure would find it amusing. As the two were close to arriving at her quarters, they spotted Jia Zhang walking out. His eyes immediately filled with contempt as they focused on Bao yu. What have you got there, boy, he said. • 7. The Olympic Hockey Game Between The Soviet Union And The... The 1980 Olympic hockey game between the Soviet Union and the United States known as the miracle on ice is the most incredible moments in recent American history due to the significance. The United States was truly an underdog kind of like David and goliath, because no one expected the United States to win against the soviets. The time in history is also important as the game took place during the height of the cold war and these two nations that could break into nuclear war at anytime had to face each other in a hockey game. This rivalry between the two countries transferred on to the game and the result was amazing, at least for the United States. In modern day America sports are a very important part of our culture, because we are constantly watching sports and participating in sports. In any sport we watch mythology is present. The very act itself of playing the sport is reflective of old roman times when gladiators would kill for the crowds entertainment although today instead of killing its by hitting a home run or scoring a goal. At their best, sports are about the extraordinary capacities of the human spirit. (Wolter). These athletes can become extremely popular to the point were they are viewed as superhuman just like in myths, and there is a reason because the best athletes in their respective sport do what no average person could do. • 8. The Crucible Scapegoat Analysis You turn on CNN and begin catching up on the latest news on a recent shooting. You hear them blaming certain ethnic groups for being behind this tragic shooting. Although they do not know the person that did it, their first instinct is to place the blame on them. Throughout history, there have been multiple ways that every culture has used a type of a scapegoat. Scapegoat: a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency. In Arthur Miller s The Crucible, the use of a scapegoat was the blaming of women in Salem, Massachusetts for being a witch or worshipping the Devil. In the book, there were numerous girls accused, a few men, and multiple deaths. There were thirty three deaths total, one man, Giles Corey. Nineteen were hanged, and thirteen died while serving time in prison. All of these deaths were the causes of the scapegoat. They were falsely accused of witchcraft when there was no proof that they performed these acts. • 10. A Room of Oneā€™s Own and Modern Fiction Essay A Room of One s Own and Modern Fiction One of the first things to notice about A Room of One s Own is that it is not a typical lecture. It rambles and flows back and forth, in and out. It is more narrative than logic. It breaks many of the conventions of a formal address. Why does Virginia Woolf choose to do this? Why choose this style, this method? One reason is to turn predominantly masculine, or traditional, thinking on its head in order to undermine its authority. There is another reason for her approach, however one that rises from her most basic ideas about what literature and writing should be and do. Her ideas about what makes for good writing are contained in this text, if indirectly. Grasping these ideas allows the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Part of the power of A Room of One s Own is its ability to engage the depths of human psychology where logical analysis and rhetoric might fail to do so. Though the problems with which Woolf is presented in A Room of One s Own are significantly attached to historical problems, her main role in the work is as a literary critic rather than historian, though on the surface she does not seem to say much about style, method and criticism in it. She mentions Jane Austen s sentences, how material concerns influence writers, a few words about the structure of the novel and that fiction is like a spider s web (Woolf, AROO 35). These themes seem to be contained in greater detail throughout the work, but hidden, just beneath the surface. There are other places, however, where Woolf speaks more directly about the aims and methods of writing. In her 1925 essay, Modern Fiction, she claims that it is Life that good writing must search for and somehow capture. She writes: Life is not a series of gig lamps symmetrically arranged; but a luminous halo, a semi transparent envelope surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end (287 88). Life is like the sea, with its ebb and flow; it is like a river, constantly changing, yet always the same. Navigating these waters is the ultimate goal of writing for her, but this alone does not account for her use of the subjective, of impressions, in her own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Nationalism and Sectionalism in America During the Late... America was founded by multiple states, from different regions and subsequently different styles of life, which made the possibility of their union unstable and uncertain. But, because they were united by a common goal to break free of Britain s despotic sovereignty the American colonies were able to win their independence from Britain and become the United States of America. This dichotomy between the states different styles of life and their shared goal laid the foundation for the forces of nationalism and sectionalism in the US. The two opposing forces worked hand in hand to manipulate Americans views of one another and the American political and economic systems, though the force of sectionalism outweighed the force of nationalism ... However, the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War, increased sectionalism in the US because it did not resolve the impressment of American sailors, which was one of the main causes of the war. Overall, the War of 1812 was a huge proponent of nationalism in the US, and that nationalistic feeling carried over into the Era of Good Feelings, bringing about a shift in politics as well as Americans national identity. The Era of Good Feelings was a product of and contributed to the force of nationalism in America, characterized by many changes in America s politics and internal affairs. The Federalist Party disintegrated because of the widespread criticism of the Hartford Convention during and after the War of 1812, making the Democratic Republican Party the only political party. This meant that the old party animosities and tension would disappear, and there would be less political sectionalism in the government. The Democratic Republicans underwent changes as well, like their party policies. The party became focused on obtaining a monopoly of government patronage, using fundraisers and events to gain support from the people. During this era, there was an increase in internal improvements, as seen with the American System, an economic plan that consisted of three parts. The first part was a tariff that would protect and promote American industry, known as the Tariff of Abominations by the Southern states, who were inconvenienced by the tariff. The ... The whole world relies on mass media because it is today s way of retrieving information about the world. The media can either make you or break you. In this case, the media made all people of color look like terrorists blaming them for actions of others. Muslims are blamed for 9/11, and even though William is not a Muslim, he is stereotyped as a terrorist because of his physical features. For example the invisibility of Native Americans in mass media provides a unique vantage point for examining how media representations impact both identity and self understanding (Leavitt) which means whenever you do see a Native American on media, they are most likely shown as 19th or 18th century figures. Or they are stereotyped as poor, uneducated, and prone to addictions (Leavitt) but in this case William is the exact opposite, yet he still gets stereotyped as a different race because he does not meet the requirements for his own race. Fekadu is a Muslim Oramo member from Ethiopia, yet people think [he is] black, they don t see [him] as a terrorist, only as a crack head addict on welfare. • 29. My Complicated Family History The mix of my complicated family history and my strong supportive mother have shaped me into the person that I am today. My biological father, Clint, battled with a secret drug addiction that my sweet mother knew nothing about until it was too late. When I was only a year old, the drug addiction had gotten the best of Clint and he made the decision to take his own life, leaving me and my mother heart broken. Clint s choices impacted my life in such ways that I cannot explain. Growing up, it was just me and my mother until I was four, however, in this time we took the bad situation that we were in and we did not let it get the best of us. We chose to move forward and to take positive things from this horrific time. We learned through this experience that life goes on. No matter how hard the situation is, you must move on. Learning this mentality at such a young age has taught me that I cannot fret the small things, I have to look at the bigger picture because that is what really matters. My mother is truly such an amazing woman and her guidance has shaped me into the young woman that I am. We have battled through so many hardships together but she has always taught me that I can and will get through everything life throws at me. My mother could have chosen to give up when my biological ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The man she married, Scott, could not be more my dad than blood. I know how rare it is for relationships to work out like the way our families did, but it is truly a gift from God. I refer to Scott as my father, and he treats me no different than he treats his biological son, and my best friend Riley. I catch myself feeling as though I have a relatively normal life, but when I take a step back and look, my life had the opportunity to go in a very negative direction and truthfully I had a good reason for it to so. However, my mother and I chose to move on and today we do live a relatively normal day to day ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(272) Even though her final husband had beaten her, because he was good in bed with her she felt she loved him the best of them all (272). • 31. Theme Of Death In The Epic Of Gilgamesh The Mesopotamian understanding of death is uniquely different from modern understandings in that the Mesopotamians lacked a belief in their own free will. The Mesopotamian epic poem, The Epic of Gilgamesh, can, as a result of both the theology and cosmogony of the civilization, be viewed as the first literary meditation on death and the human condition. The hero of the epic, Gilgamesh, through a metaphorical self death, via the death of his only equal, Enkidu, can begin to comprehend the idea of death. The Epic of Gilgamesh, above all else, is a reflection on mortality and the human place in the cosmos. Gilgamesh is two thirds (Gilgamesh 61) god, and, as a result of this, lives with a sense of invincibility. The idea of death, of ceasing to exist in his temporal form, does not originally frighten him, as it does Enkidu, who is able to grasp the true nature of existence because of his bestial nature. Raised among beasts and the wilderness, death is a very real and very present threat to Enkidu. Though Gilgamesh is aware that only the gods live forever (71) while men s days are numbered (71), his understanding of his place in the cosmos is limited. Gilgamesh is unable to comprehend that though he is part god, he is not a god, and therefore, is subject to mortal laws and constraints. This is evident by his conduct prior to the arrival of Enkidu, when he behaves monstrously. His lust leaves no virgin to her lover (62), and sounds the tocsin for his amusement (62). ... • 33. The Successes and Failures of the Zapatista Movement Essay The Successes and Failures of the Zapatista Movement On January 1, 2004, over one thousand people in the mountain hamlet of Oventic, Chiapas, celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) rebellion with song and dance. Thus, it seems a fitting time to take stock of the successes and failures of the Zapatista movement in the context of its original goals. While the EZLN has been able to establish thirty eight autonomous indigenous communities in Chiapas, it has failed to weaken the Mexican government s commitment to neo liberal economic policies. In the following pages, we will explore those factors which enabled the Zapatistas to establish regions of autonomy and extrapolate from Theotonio Dos ... In addition, the Zapatistas have created five organizational centers (caracoles) and established Juntas of Good Government in each of them in order to ?resolve conflicts and disequilibrium between the centers and the outlying autonomies.? The caracoles mark the EZLN?s first success with regional, as opposed to municipal, autonomy. These Zapatista achievements can be attributed to the local terrain of Chiapas, restrictive legislation, and local and national scrutiny. The Mexican government has faced legal and practical restraints on launching an all out war on the Zapatistas. The first government counter attacks encountered tactical difficulties in the jungles of Chiapas and the army failed to score a quick military victory. In 1995, the federal congress passed a ? law for dialogue,? which foreclosed the option of a unilateral show of force by the Mexican army in areas under Zapatista control. This legislation catalyzed the signing of the San AndrĆ©s Accords by the EZLN and the Zedillo government. The San AndrĆ©s Accords, as well as the inaccessibility of the jungles of Chiapas, made overt military action politically and tactically unviable. The EZLN?s national popularity and visibility also guaranteed its survival. Though the Mexican government maintained a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Summary Of The Wayzata High School Auditorium The Wayzata High School auditorium had been transformed into an art museum full of Caleb s paintings. There was a long table covered with hundreds of candles and matchbooks. An adjacent table displayed a guest book where friends and family wrote down messages and prayers. The pastor from the Miller s church distributed flyers about Caleb and suggested prayers to help him and his family through this difficult time. Dr. Reynolds opened the pamphlet and scanned down the back of the front page. As his eyes glanced over, he was surprised to see the last section dedicated entirely to Becca and her struggle. He read every word. The Coopers and the Millers were quietly conversing with the Davenports in a small circle far across the auditorium. Cathy was gushing to Mrs. Miller about what a wonderful and brave son she had and how much their family owed him and Matt for saving Ashley. Matt, Miranda, Ashley and George congregated with twenty other friends discussing the added weight they all felt when hearing about Becca s condition. Paige stood fifteen feet away with a group of friends, sobbing uncontrollably in Marcy s arms. The auditorium was already packed, and people were still pouring in. Dr. Reynolds main objective for the evening was to appear concerned. There were plenty of other doctors and nurses from Methodist in attendance and to cast suspicion away from himself, he needed to be amongst them. • 35. ##m And Discrimination In Gloria Naylor s Black Men And... Racism and discrimination towards those of African descent can be hard topics to discuss, especially since America still experiences the discriminatory effects of slavery. The history and fundamentals of slavery has created a rift between whites and blacks that is seemingly impossible to overcome. There has been and will be lasting social effects including racial slurs and misconceptions based on how the world views African Americans. Brent Staples, in Black Men and Public Space, details his experience being treated unfairly due to his racial status. Gloria Naylor s Mommy, what does Nigger Mean? discusses the authors first time being called the N word, how she felt, and how she asked her mom about what it meant. Brent Staples Black Men and Public Space , and Gloria Naylor s Mommy, what does Nigger Mean? are similar through the authors accounts of being treated poorly because of their African descent along with ways to cope with that oppression, and contrast through their tone in the intro and through there experience of being discriminated against and overall effect on the reader. Both authors explore examples in which they are treated in a racist or discriminatory manner. Brent Staples encountered a younger woman and came upon her late one evening on a deserted street... she cast back a worried glance... picked up her pace and was soon running in earnest. (Staples 1) Just the mere sight of him made the woman scared, after this experience he feels surprised, embarrassed, and dismayed all at once. Her flight made me feel like an accomplice in tyranny. (2) He realizes that he is indistinguishable from the muggers... (2), or at least to the woman. Staples experiences, first hand, discrimination; the woman is fearful of him because of his race, and Staples feels the full effect of that. Gloria Naylor recounts the first time she was ever called the N word. It was in class and she she says she couldn t have been more puzzled. She didn t know what a nigger was, but she did know it was something he shouldn t have called her (Naylor 3). She was thoroughly confused and later asked her mother what the word meant. Naylor is treated poorly due to the color of her skin. Similarly to Staples, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
