Law Enforcement Leadership Is Essential For Every Police...
Law Enforcement Leadership Outline
I. Law Enforcement Leadership
a. Strong law enforcement leadership is essential for every police organization.
i. The influencing people can involve both what a manager does and how the manger does it (Dean,
2013, p. 306). ii. Lack of leadership competency is often the most critical obstacle to successful police
projects (Yang, 2012, p. 535).
b. To create an organization with great leaders, the organization has to be able to help create those
leaders.
i. It is important to understand and determine the factors that have an effect on or predict leadership
style in order to prepare leaders for the future more effectively, to teach them how to keep followers
motivated to meet both organizational and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
i. local police departments must balance the competing challenges that urban counterterrorism
initiatives raise from security, law enforcement, intelligence and civil liberties perspectives (Silber,
2013, p. 150). ii. After the events of the Boston marathon bombings, Boston police, the FBI, and other
agencies came together as one without regard to politics or infighting (Youngwirth, 2013, p. 24). iii.
Failure to thwart the attacks using available information has been interpreted as indicating a need for a
more comprehensive and strategic coordination of intelligence (Schaible, 2012, p. 761)
b. When it comes to collaboration between agencies, there is very little for department to turn to as a
guide. This creates more problems between agencies determining who does what.
i. Though there are a few mechanisms that create some degree of commonality, such as the U.S.
Constitution as well as federal laws and grants, there is no centralized authority responsible for
coordinating the cornucopia of law enforcement agencies existing at every level of government
(Stewart, 2011, p. 409).
IV. Public Perception
a. The way leaders use their power greatly affects the way in which the community they serve
perceives them.
i. While elected officials are charged with managing the administration of criminal justice, they
always do so with an eye toward politics, and herein lies an important source of the tension between
the pursuit of coherent policy

Ferris Buellers Day Off Analysis
Ferris Bueller s Day Off was written, produced, and directed by John Hughes. The film was released
on June 11, 1986. It stared the likes of Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller), Alan Ruck (Cameron

Ferris Bueller s Day Off is about a high school senior, Ferris Bueller, that pretends to be sick to get a
day off from school. He convinces his friend, Cameron Frye, to join him. They devise a plan to get
Ferris girlfriend out of school as well. The story begins with Ferris lying in bed trying to convince his
parents that he is too sick to go to school. He was able to successfully convince them while getting an
evil stare from his sister, Jeanie. Since he does not have a car Ferris must try and convince his friend,
Cameron, to come get him and enjoy the day off together. The school dean, Ed Rooney, knows Ferris
is not sick so calls Ferris s mother who confirms that he is sick. He tells her that Ferris has nine
absences, but on the computer screen the absences dwindles from nine to two, Ferris changed this
from his computer at home. Ferris and Cameron devise a plan to get Ferris s girlfriend out of school.
They need Cameron s dad s Ferrari to get her out of school and it works flawlessly. The three of them

The Worldview And The Naturalistic Worldview
If one believes in the naturalistic worldview, there will be no value or purpose to life. We will have no
explanation for why we humans are here. In fact we will have no explanation for why any maternal
thing is here. Humans and other material things would be on the same level. Humans would not be
anymore more special then a rat, a flower, or stone. Also one would have no goal to reach. He would
be basically floating along subject to chance. In naturalism, there is no one to set the standards for
ethics. So where do their ethics come from? Some of the philosophers have set standards like when
Epicurus said he was not talking about sensual pleasure when he said our highest good was to attain
pleasure. The question is though, who are they to set these standards? They have as much to base their
statements off of as the man done the road who says it is okay to attain sensual pleasures. So if
something feels good to someone or makes them happy, what is to stop them from doing it. When we
take a look at abortion, what could be wrong with it? It is only changing the course of some chance
process. If it helps someone, what is to stop them from doing it? Naturalism has nothing that can
prove it wrong. Now lets compare hunting for animals and murder of humans. What is the difference?
There would be no difference, since one would not hold any special place over the other. This means
that there is nothing wrong with killing a human. In fact, there would be nothing wrong with

Analysis Of Eugene O Neill s PlayThe Emperor Jones
Eugene O Neill is widely considered the most influential of American playwrights. He is called the
founder of modern drama in the United States , and holds the title of the first American playwright to
earn a Nobel Prize in literature. (O Neill 794) His play, The Emperor Jones, is credited as being one
that provided several firsts in American theatre history: the Provincetown Players first major hit, the
first major role for an African American actor on the legitimate Broadway stage (in houses where the
audience was still racially segregated), and the play that secured O Neill s place as a writer for the
high art, experimental theatre worthy of international attention. (Steen 343) Basically, The Emperor
Jones made Eugene O Neill.
The play is a psychological study of Brutus Jone s mind, his fears, visions and dream. Tom tom is part
and parcel of the psychological action; at first it is the call to war ; then it merges into the Emperor
Jones vision of the slaves working to its beat; finally it becomes is own throbbing, feverish temples,
all the while it s our heart beating more and more rapidly as we follow his fate. lastly the Tom tom is a
symbol of man s last heart beat, death the consciousness of Jones has been presented through the
cinematographic technique of the flashback fusing the past and present. Here symbol and psychology
merge and the whole play is a long drama. Emperor Jones represents the breakdown of a Negroid
mentally under the stress of fear and

Wal Mart employees receive wages that are lower than the average for the industry. In 2004,
associates n California earned an average of 31% less than the industry average. Wal Mart employees
received an average of $9.70 per hour compared to $14.01 at large retailers (Dube Jacobs, 2004). Such
low wages cause Wal Mart associates to receive government assistance. The families of Wal Mart
employees use an estimate 38% more non healthcare related public assistance than the average of
families for large retailers (Dube Jacobs, 2004). After reviewing numbers as drastic as these one can
easily understand why Wal Mart employees would leave Wal Mart to pursue better opportunities
elsewhere.
On top of low wages Wal Mart employees pay an exuberant amount for basic healthcare. In January
2006 only 46% of Wal Mart s associates were covered by healthcare (Wal Mart Watch, 2005). Wal
Mart employees also have to wait long periods of time to qualify for healthcare. Full time employees
must wait 6 months, and part time employees must wait for one year, before they qualify for benefits
(Wal Mart Watch, 2005). Not only do employees have to wait a long time to qualify for benefits they
pay 41% of the insurance premium costs (Wal Mart Watch, 2005). The combination of low wages and
high priced healthcare is the reason that so many of its associates receive public health assistance.

Mirror Mirror The Uses And Abuse Of Self Love Summary
Self love is an up and coming problem that can even be explained in Greek Mythology tales. Chapter
2 of the book Mirror, Mirror: The Uses and Abuses of Self Love is written by Simon Blackburn to an
audience of educated readers in their adulthood to apply lessons from greek mythology to modern
society, and suggest ways to downsize self love. This book was recently published in 2014 by
Princeton University Press. Simon Blackburn is a retired professor of Philosophy at The University Of
Cambridge, but remains a research professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Blackburn effectively educates his audience of self love by Identifying with his audience, and the

He works through this constraint but, no matter what he cannot change the tale. He has work around it
to get his point across. Also, considering it is a book he has a lack of visual representation which can
hurt readers understanding of the story. Also since this is a longer book some readers may become
disinterested and decide not to read it. This chapter includes the usage of Kairos, which is the right
time to make an argument. Narcissism is becoming a big problem in today s society, and has been for
a long time. The author could have reached his exigence to write this essay by realizing all this self
love around him. In order to convince his readers of his ideas, Blackburn goes back and forth between
the Story told by Ovid, and ideas on self love to help readers believe him. The chapter starts off with
the Greek Tale about Narcissus and his journey of self love. The author then helps connect these ideas
to modern society to help his audience understand the argument he is trying to make. Blackburn doesn
t put the tale word for word in this chapter. Instead he explains the story, and includes excerpts of the

Malaria In The United States
About one million people die of malaria every year yet it is not highly publicized in the United States.
This is because malaria is not as prevalent in the United States as it is in other parts of the world such
as Africa, Asia and South America. Numerous amounts of people in the United States have heard
about malaria but a lot of people do not know exactly what the disease is. Although people who get
the disease are typically poor, malaria is a parasitic disease that can affect anyone, including the
healthy and wealthy if the right precautions are not taken. This is evident in the case of Fausto Coppi,
a wealthy Italian cyclist who died of malaria in 1959.

protection against insects and the diseases they carry. Due to the fact that insecticide treated nets kill
the mosquitoes, they help reduce malaria transmission. Bed nets have been shown to greatly reduce
malaria morbidity and mortality. Lastly, Coppi could have been treated with ACTs as opposed to

Flahtahl s Propaganda Triumph Of The Will ( 1938 )
Since the advent of documentary film with Robert Flaherty s Nanook of the North (1922), those with
power have sought to use it as a tool in their arsenal to reach people. Advances in communications
technology in the early twentieth century allowed it to be used as a one way message delivery system
to the masses, however the ways in which this has been implemented have varied hugely based on
context and political viewpoint. Through consideration of Leni Riefenstahl s propaganda Triumph of
the Will (1935), and Lorentz s advocacy documentary The River (1938) this essay will analyse the
concepts of persuasion, education and propaganda in documentary film, discussing the similarities and
differences between these areas. It is worth first briefly defining the ideas that this essay will cover,
education is at its purest form the provision of information and systematic instruction while persuasion
is the attempt to induce change through reasoning. Propaganda, conversely, is non objective/biased
information used to promote a point of view. Although on paper the distinctions seem clear, in
practical use it quickly becomes apparent how much these lines can blur. If persuasion is a technique
that attempts to change viewpoints, how far does it really sit from this idea of propaganda? Both films
that will be discussed were produced in the nineteen thirties, a turbulent political landscape where the
great depression and high unemployment rates in Europe had put democratic capitalism under

How Does Shakespeare Use Figurative Language In Sonnet 130
In William Shakespeare s poem Sonnet 130, he describes his lover in a non idealistic way by
describing her features which are the complete opposite of a typical lady in a Petrarchan sonnet. A
sonnet is a 14 line poem with 10 syllable lines and a rhyming scheme that uses iambic pentameter.
Petrarchan sonnets idolize women by creating a dream lady, thus resulting in unrealistic features. The
typical Petrarchan lady has blonde hair, a high forehead, pale skin, and a long neck, and the physical
traits are seen as a reflection of inner beauty. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 uses figurative language and a
creative structure to mock the Petrarchan ideal by portraying true love for what s in the inside instead
of lust or infatuation. At first glance the poem has a harsh tone, but later the one is discovered to be
truthful, hinting at some satirical elements. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He compares coral to her lips, saying it is far more red than her lips red (line 2). The metaphor states
her lips are average and simple, not too bright or flamboyant. He continues to talk about her average

Petrarchan woman s skin color. Her skin is not luminescent or bright how men would want it, seen by
the use of imagery and a metaphor. Her hair is also nothing like the Petrarchan woman s blonde locks,
but like black wires [growing] on her head (line 4). Although it s not the Petrarchan woman s hair

Case Study Of Sacco
1.1.1 Growth of SACCOs
Over the past four decades, Sacco s have been especially vibrant in rural areas since the banks left a
gap when they withdraw from service provision to the poor or middle class people of the rural. In
1975, rural Sacco s membership was 500,000 and this has grown to 1.2 million in 2005. In this period,
Sacco s were primary closed cooperatives dealing only with active members of specific organizations
with a common bond. Larger Saccos have opened up to non member clients by stablishing FOSA
while others still continue to offer limited services to members only. This offers a broader range of
financial services to both members and non members. Larger Sacco s in terms of capital base began
offering FOSA s in their head during the economic liberation period of 1990 s when commercial
banks withdrew their services from less viable areas. Hence the FOSA s attract former bank customers

Cooperatives planning include preparation of annual budgets, which are approved during the annual

Relationship Between The Father And The Road By Cormac...
Cormac McCarthy is an American novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He has written many novels
relating to violent and post apocalyptic genres. McCarthy has won multiple awards for his novels such
as the U.S National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle Award for the novel All the Pretty
Horse. His novel No Country for Old Men also won four Academy Awards. In addition to that, The
Road, also won the Pulitzer Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction. The Road is a
story about a little boy and his father who journeys through post apocalyptic America. Many have
named this novel an american classic due to one of many reasons the loving and personal relationship
between the father and his son despite the fact that any traces of life is essentially dead. McCarthy
starts his novel in the woods, where the father realises that his son and himself will not survive another
winter in their current location thus having to keep moving South. As the father stares into the
nothingness of the country he starts to think about his son, He only knew that the child was his

survive, the father believes that his reason to keep living is because of his son. He proves this thought
during the conversation between him and the little boy who asks what the father would do if he died:
If you died I would want to die too...So I could be with you (11). The father s only

Ambivalence In Bless Me Ultima
Voice and Ambivalence in Bless Me Ultima and Baby of the Family
Bless Me Ultima and Baby of the Family serve as the coming of age stories of two minority children.
Rudolfo Anaya and Tina McElory Ansa skillfully reveal the richness, diversity, and conflicts that can
exist within the Hispanic American and African American cultures primarily through the dream
sequences in each novel. Dreams are the mechanism used in each work to magnify the individual
experiences and conflicts Tony and Lena encounter. In addition and perhaps, more importantly, Tony
and Lena deal with ambivalence and find their voices not only through the relationships with other
characters, but through the resolution of their dreams.
To truly fathom how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is especially true for Tony in BMU as he is torn on a myriad of levels. Is he Marez or Luna? Is he
a future Catholic priest or vaquero? Tony verbalizes the quandary he is in when he asks, What life will
I choose (Anaya 41)? Through Tony s dreams, the depth of the ambivalent dilemma is elucidated.
From the very first dream in the novel, a stage is set for the ambivalent theme. Tony is witnessing a
birth of a child who, barely out of the womb, is being fought over like the spoils of war. Would this
child be tied to the earth as a Luna or free upon it as a Marez (Anaya 6)? Only the strange woman who
helped deliver the child will know his destiny (Anaya 6). This is Tony s central quandary, and the
woman represents the feasibility of a middle road. At this point, however, Tony can only visualize two
paths. As each successive dream is revealed, it becomes increasingly clear that Tony cannot simply fit
into a specific niche. There seems to be a connection between his history and future, whereas he must
either decide an old way or create a new path that will unite his people.
Moreover, there is a layering of irresolute issues in the dream sequences. Interwoven in the conflict of
choosing his mother s path of the Lunas or his father s path of the vaqueros, is an ambivalence about
religion. There is no ultimate Christian or mystical force in the novel. Wood notes that Tony s father s

Review Of How To Read Literature Like A Professor By...
In How to Read Literature Like a Professor John Foster describes methods on how to relate texts to
each other. He writes about reoccurring character development, relation to Shakespeare, the Bible and
any other reoccurring literary devices commonly used in books. The___ Foster states in his book is
seen being used in Upton Sinclair s The Jungle.
In Foster s writing, he believes the emphasis should be on the character s personality being altered
throughout the story, No matter how large or small the action, the most important thing that characters
can do is change, develop, learn, mature, call it what you will. This change is seen in Jurgis, the father
in this Lithuanian immigrant family, after coming back from jail for assaulting his wife s boss, who
sexually assaulted her. Before serving time, Jurgis has the persona of a hard working immigrant with
the strong motivation to work as hard as he can to provide for his family. He never steals, participates
in any illegal activities and promises his wife he will work even harder when they have any financial

There is no solid proof that Callisthenes was a part of the Royal Pages conspiracy, Alexander just
wanted an excuse to put him to death. Being a ready ear to the talk of the pages when they were

Does that not seem to you like betrayal and rejection of his own people? Alexander could never have

it may have been, but it was the wrong one. At the trial of the royal pages conspiracy, it was stated to
Alexander that he abhorred the customs of his own country. Thus it was the king of Persians, not of
the Macedonians that they wanted to kill13. Alexander has simply become so far removed from his
own people that some do not even see him as their own king. The plot against his life was to pursue
him as a deserter in accordance with the conventions of war14. When a sailor rescued Alexander s

Truman wanted to drop the atomic bomb on Japan, saying that it will end the war immediately. It was
the easiest military decision he ever made. Truman was at least as much concerned with the role of the
atomic bomb in the shaping of history as in its capacity to shorten the war. It would not only shorten
the war, but also an early Japanese surrender would preclude Russian entry into the war, stopping the
Soviets not only from participating in the occupation of Japan but also from advancing through China

the Russians entering the war, they were not indispensable and he did not think the Americans should

Well Being Assessment
The Human Well Being Index 10 Geography Melony Weir This report serves as a means of explaining
and evaluating The Human Wellbeing Index (aka the HWI). Consisting of several general well being
indicators, the HWI was created in hopes of providing a greater insight into living conditions in
various countries. To measure and compare the quality of life for people across the globe, several well
being indicators were carefully selected and analysed. These indicators were thought to most
appropriately represent human well being in each country as they covered areas such as education, the
economy, and population. Having established that the HWI indicators were used to determine the
general living standards in each country, the facts and figures collected were then used to create an
average well being ranking system. This system ranked each country from highest to lowest levels of
life quality and human well being. The remainder of this report will include a background on general
human well being, a description of each indicator used, the results of the HWI, and finally, an
evaluation of its overall effectiveness. Background While there is no universal definition of human
well being, it can generally be described as a concept that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Indonesia s Influence On The International Platform
A country which is fourth most populous nation on the planet, is on the course of becoming one of the
biggest economies in coming decades, Indonesia s influence and role on the international platform
cannot be overlooked especially when one of the fastest growing tension in the world is taking place
in its own backyard. The recent heightening of competition for the dominance over South China Sea,
an enormously important region due to its strategic location and vast amount of untapped natural
resources, has strained relationships between China and other countries in the region. China s
extensive claims of authority over the sea and the sea s supposed 11 billion barrels of untapped oil and
190 trillion cubic feet of natural gas have provoked challenging claimants Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei,
Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. As early as the 1970s, countries in the region began to claim
as their own islands and various zones in the South China Sea for instance the Spratly islands, which
may have rich natural resources and fishing areas. Even though its relations and on the rise Indonesia
upholds a flexible foreign policy that allows it to productively engage with countries around the

The Chinese Room Thought Experiment Analysis
John Searle s thought experiment in paper Minds, brains and programs from 1980 is one of the most
recognisable and broadly accredited critiques of artificial intelligence (AI) an idea that computers are
(or some day will be) able to think. Researchers in AI field often make a claim that our mental activity
can be compared to a computer following a program. In such a view human brains do nothing more
but simply process information on a massive scale. The most important question that Searle wants to
discuss in his paper is: What psychological and philosophical significance should we attach to recent
efforts at computer simulations of human cognitive capacities? (p. 417) In order to tackle this idea he
establishes two different types of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the replies of the Chinese room would then be created in almost the same manner as the
responses of a genuine speaker, Chinese room would truly understand Chinese. Against this, Searle
gives an example of him operating water pipes to give answers in Chinese instead of writing on paper.
He would still not understand Chinese. Simulations do not necessarily have the same features or
properties as what they simulate. A simulation of a hurricane, for example, has nothing of the
capacities of a real hurricane (p.

Characteristics Of Writing In Small Steps, By Louis Sachar
Author Style Louis Sachar writes in many different styles in the different books he writes. There are
many different books that he has written and has gotten many awards. Sachar won the Newbery Medal
for one of his top selling books, called Holes. Another book that he is written is called Small Steps.
Small Steps is about how you have to do one thing at a time in life and not do so many things at once.
In the book Small Steps, Louis Sachar uses figurative language, conflict to help keep the reader
engaged, and uses the same character s name in multiple of his books as his writing style. First off,
one style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict is a struggle between
opposing forces or when two characters on a story get in a fist fight or just a fight over a conversation.
In the book Small Steps, an example of conflict is on page 217, She picked up her cup and tossed the
contents at him, splattering him with coffee and cream. Kira got mad at Armpit because Armpit said
that Kira should consider another profession besides singing and Kira was really upset that Armpit
said that. Kira tossed the cup of coffee at him while everyone in the store stared at Armpit with coffee
all over his shirt. This relates to the author s style because Sachar likes to use a lot conflict in his
books to keep the reader engaged. Another example of conflict in the book Small Steps is on page
199, Moses whacked him on the side of his head. X Ray gets hit on the side of his head very hard by
Moses who is a man who wants the counterfeit tickets that X Ray has. X Ray s glasses broke and his
tickets were stolen by Moses while X Ray laid on the floor after he got punched in the face. Sachar
uses a lot of conflict in the books he writes. Secondly, another style that Louis Sachar uses in his
books, especially Small Steps and Holes, is figurative language. Figurative language is language that
uses words of expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. It also uses
exaggerations or alterations to make a particular linguistic point. An example of figurative

Immigration And Chinese Immigrants
According to the online dictionary, the word foreign is an adjective and it is defined as of, from, in, or
characteristic of a country or language other than one s own. The noun foreigner is defined as a person
born in or coming from a country other than one s own. At first thought the words foreign and
foreigner may not carry a significant amount of weight outside of its denotation but what about those
who identify with either term? These people are looked as the others. In Anzia Yezierska s How I
Found America and the poetry of the Chinese detainees on Angel Island both display an array of
frustration because of mistreatment and their expectation of America were not met.
The reason most immigrants move over from their original country to the United States is that they are
in search of a better life and more opportunities. The Chinese are no different because a huge
population came during the 1900s in search of jobs. Many worked as farmers, miners and railroad
builders. Americans were not too thrilled so they accused the Chinese of monopolizing their jobs.
President Chester A. Arthur on May 6, 1882, signed the Chinese Exclusion Acts which prevented
Chinese immigrants from immigrating to the United States. From 1910 1940 when Chinese
immigrated over they were kept and interrogated at Angel Island immigration station in San Francisco
Bay. They were asked outrages questions and if they didn t answer correctly they would be deported.

Research Paper On Swarm Robotics
AN EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON MULTI ROBOT FOARGING USING SWARMS FOR E WASTE
COLLECTION
1. INTRODUCTION:
Classical robots are usually single complex pieces of electromechanical hardware designed to perform
a task. They are typically expensive, specialized, and complicated. An alternate approach is to use a
swarm composed of a large number of very simple robots that work together, rather than a single
highly capable robot. In this approach, the strength of the system comes not from the complexity and
power of a piece of hardware, but from the cooperation of a large number of individuals. As the cost
of simple robotic components goes down and availability goes up, this approach becomes increasingly
feasible. It is currently possible, for example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For successful operation they need appropriate communication strategies that should be dynamically
adaptable to possibly changing environmental requirements. A promising way to achieve this is
through the use of an evolutionary robotics (ER) approach, i.e., using evolutionary algorithms to
evolve the robots controllers. Swarm Robotics is a new approach to the coordination of multi robot
systems which consist of large numbers of usually, but not necessarily, simple physical robots. It is an
interesting alternative to classical approaches to robotics because of some properties of problem
solving by social animals, which is flexible, robust, decentralized and self organized.

A Comparison Of Hannibal And Scipio Africaus
Throughout the years the debate of who was the better general has come up numerous times. Both of
them were very intelligent generals and were arguable some of the top generals at the time. Hannibal
is the more well known out of the two generals. Hannibal is a better general than Scipio Africanus
because he was a master mind with his tactics, great at winning the big battles, and people believed in
him and what he was doing. The Beginning Of Scipio Scipio Africanus was born in 236 B.C., into
which he was born into a one of the excellent patrician homes. Three generations of men before him

There was only two more Carthaginian armies left in Spain that Scipio had to defeat in order to have

he constructed a very strategic plan and distracted them by attacking them straight on while he also
flanked them from the sides. Quickly after that victory he scored another one and took control of
Gades which then completed Rome s control over Spain. The Beginning of Hannibal Hannibal was
born in Carthage in 247 B.C. He was the son of the great general Hamilcar Barca. His father devoted
himself to improving Carthage s fortunes. At the age of twenty six, Hannibal was given complete

He went on to conquer many Iberian tribes and during that he married an Iberian princess named

Globalization
Globalization is actually an ongoing process of interconnectedness between nations, multinational
corporations (MNCs), international non governmental organizations (INGOs), and individuals.
Globalization has led to a growing gap between those who have access and opportunities by which to
thrive and those who do not. There are now 793 billionaires (as of 2009) representing an essentially
unimaginable amount of wealth. At the same time, there are millions of workers laboring in conditions
we would likely consider inhumane, and doing so for starvation level wages. And still, there are those
who do not even have access to jobs whose conditions are even worse. Globalization can benefit some
but leaves other nation further and further behind.
Inequalities
It can be argued that the trend for global inequality is that The rich get richer, the poor get poorer.
This can be seen in two graphs, the first shows that the high income nations have risen dramatically
compared to the middle and low income nation which only increasing slightly over the years. This
shows that the growth of population in low income countries is much higher that than the high income
countries therefore the widening gap even more.

Grove Street Advisors Case Study
Grove Street Advisors Case Study
Grove Street Advisors ( GSA ) is a leading fund of funds, focused on investing in low risk top tier
private equity funds that are not excessively large nor highly levered. GSA is faced with a number of
strategic alternatives to help catalyze the firm s next stage of growth. We propose that GSA expand
globally and continue to build expertise in relatively underserved global PE markets such as China and
India to help meet its objectives of satisfying customer needs, enhancing its international reputation,
staying responsive to trends in private equity, and ultimately maximizing profitability.
When considering GSA s strategic direction, we should first build an understanding of its relative
position within the private equity market. GSA s current value proposition to its clients is: 1) Greater
accessibility to private equity firms through GSA s customized services, allowing less sophisticated
clients to progress from a passive fund of funds investor into a direct private equity investor, removing
the intermediation between the GP and the client; 2) A strategy of vintage year diversification ,
whereby GSA contributes to funds over a number of different years in order to gain access to many
different types of funds; and 3) A compensation structure that is weighted towards carried interest at
the expense of fees, ensuring an alignment of interests between GSA and its clients. These strategies
have helped the fund retain large and important

Ehsan Dolatshahi
Independent Study
April 22, 2015
Introduction
The old generation of electrical power grid has taken care of our needs in the past. However, as our
world progress technologically, so do the expectations from different infrastructures around us. Smart
grid is an initiative to completely restructure the electrical power grid to meet the current and future
requirements of its clients. Upgrading our electrical power grid could bring novel security
vulnerabilities into the system. Thus, security is one of the key parts in smart grid technology. Smart
grid technology also puts more reliability demands on WAN (wide area network) infrastructures. [1]
A smart grid is an intelligent electricity network that integrates the actions of all users connected to it
and makes use of innovative information, control, and communication technologies to save energy, cut
cost, and raise reliability and transparency. The smart grid is an upgrade to the current electrical power
structure. Meaning, on top of the functionality of our existing power system, it has upgraded with
some novel specifications. These new features adds more vulnerability to the system. [2]
Smart grid is mainly composed of six basic systems: power generation system, distribution system,
transmission network, data management and processing system, smart metering system, and customer
information system. The network architecture of smart grid

Westward Expansion
While the western United States was growing rapidly, the means on transportation across the great
plains was a very long and dangerous trek. With the growing desire for western settlements, the
Transcontinental Railroad would offer a much faster and safer means of travel to the western states.
The railroad would also be capable of carrying goods to and from the West.
There were some primary motives for the United States Government to promote and be so largely
involved with the building of the railroad. First, it was the age of Manifest Destiny, a term coined by
journalist John O Sullivan in 1845, was a driving force in 19th century America s western expansion.
It was the notion that Americans and the institutions of the U.S. are morally superior and therefore
Americans are morally obligated to spread those institutions ( Westward Expansion ). The building of
the Transcontinental Railroad would be an enormous step in this process, making the settlement of the
west much more inviting to people, as well as making the process of western expansion much faster.
Secondly, the fact of being able to send troops much quicker to the Western states. There was great
conflict between settlers and the Native Americans once the flood of people began. This brought the
need for the troops to protect the settlers, and eventually, to force the rightfully resilient Native
Americans onto reservations. Third, as California continued to grow in population, the United States

The Canadian Criminal Justice System
It is believed that while all human kind may have had common beginnings in the millennia past, the
course of human history prevents all races from reverting back to that common kind. It is further
believed that the racism that subsists in today s society does not exist in the same manner within
Canada. While Canada is an egalitarian society, a close examination would suggest that the blunt
historical and social truths of racism that are often smugly denied exist very much in Canadian society
and have seeped into the Canadian criminal justice system. The racialization of crime, discriminatory
policing, minority overrepresentation in prison populations and a blatant denial of justice are aspects
of the system that taint much of its past and create a worried present. This paper argues against the
prevalent Canadian defence of egalitarianism by establishing the presence of systemic discrimination
within the Canadian criminal justice system.
Whether it is through print or through television screens, the press is the today s public s sole source
of news; especially news about crime and the courts. The tendency of the press to focus on crimes
committed by minorities majorly influences the justice system s reaction to minority offenders. A
minority criminal is never given the racial anonymity that a non minority criminal enjoys. The
following are news headlines and/or excerpts from court reports illustrating the aforementioned; :

Similarities Between Luxembourg And The United States
Luxembourg is known to have the best health care system in the world. In Luxembourg, every citizen
has health care insurance and each member is protected by basic medical coverage. Citizens in
Luxembourg have health care taxes taken out of each check which is on average 5.44 percent of gross
income (Health Management, 2017). Dependents are covered under their guardians who pay health
care taxes. Another perk of the Luxembourg health care system is that students are covered for free
until the age of 27. The insurance pays for any basic procedure or treatment that is medically
necessary, if someone chooses to have an elective procedure one must self pay. Options are given to
the citizens to have private health insurance in case one was to become severely ill or next an

The United States has several different insurance options for citizens such as insurance via an
employer, insurance purchased privately or free health care provided by the government. Individuals

How Did Josef Mengele Dehumanize
When Josef Mengele s bones were found, the world let out a sigh of relief. For over forty years
survivors of the Nazi death camps, known as Auschwitz, were haunted by the vision of the handsome,
well dressed man with a caring smile who pointed his white gloved finger either left or right deciding
who lived and who died. Those who passed this man and survived have always remembered him as
the Angel of Death. Dr. Mengele is directly responsible for the deaths of thousands at Auschwitz
concentration camp. Josef Mengele s horrific experiments prove that he is the most dehumanizing
person in history. Dr. Josef Mengele was born on March 16, 1911, in Günzburg, Germany. His upper
middle class family was the proprietors of a machine tools business. Josef Mengele was the eldest son
of Karl Mengele and Walburga Mengele. Josef Mengele was a promising student and went to Munich
to study racial theories and earned a Ph.D. in physical anthropology. He then moved to Frankfurt am

Dr. Mengele wanted to create a Germanic super race. Twins were the perfect specimens because one
twin could act as the control while the other was horribly experimented on. The twins became known
as Mengele s Children. They received special privileges such as being allowed to keep their own
clothes and their hair (Chris Trueman). But Mengele s Children received a much worse fate than most
other prisoners the endless experiments. Each day the twins were awakened for daily blood
withdrawals and X rays. He is reported to have bled some to death this way (Louis Bülow). The blood
withdrawal was not even the half of terrible experiments. Dr. Mengele would often perform
experimental surgery removing organs and limbs without using anesthesia. He also injected chemicals
into the eyes of children in an attempt to change their eye color (Louis Bülow). Out of three thousand
pair of twins that came into Auschwitz, only three hundred came out

Pro Choice Vs Pro Life Essay
The terms pro life and pro choice basically comes down to the question of whether a person wants to
see abortion banned or not. But as black and white we may want it to be, there s more to the debate
(Head). The Roman Catholic Church and a wide range of other religions disallows abortion,
euthanasia, the death penalty and war (Head). When a person is pro life , you can say that individual
believes the government has an obligation to preserve all human life, despite intent, viability, or
quality of life concerns (Head). So basically if a girl or woman was raped and got pregnant, it would
be illegal to get an abortion. Another situation would be a pregnant woman s life is at risk if she goes
through with the pregnancy. That person would technically be fines or go to jail for wanting to save
her own life as opposed to keeping the baby and possibly dying. ... Show more content on

When someone is pro choice , that person wants independence with respect to their own reproductive
systems as long as they do not violate the autonomy of others (Head). Pro choice supporters assert
strongly that celibacy and abstinence; Contraception use; Emergency contraception use; Abortion, for
the first two trimesters of pregnancy; and Childbirth to remain legal (Head).I find it very disturbing
that people are willing to abort a child from second trimester to child birth. I find it unethical and
inhuman. Unless that mother has 90 percent chance of dying by keeping the child, they should then
have the choice of going through with it or getting an abortion. I personally think if someone wants to
have an abortion because they were careless, there should be a limit on the timing. Even if it was a
rape related situation, I would still consider the facts: By 21 to 25 days, the baby s heart starts beating
(Spuc). Most people of religion will associate this with life and say that s when the fetus becomes a
person. But the heart only pumps

  • 5. The Worldview And The Naturalistic Worldview If one believes in the naturalistic worldview, there will be no value or purpose to life. We will have no explanation for why we humans are here. In fact we will have no explanation for why any maternal thing is here. Humans and other material things would be on the same level. Humans would not be anymore more special then a rat, a flower, or stone. Also one would have no goal to reach. He would be basically floating along subject to chance. In naturalism, there is no one to set the standards for ethics. So where do their ethics come from? Some of the philosophers have set standards like when Epicurus said he was not talking about sensual pleasure when he said our highest good was to attain pleasure. The question is though, who are they to set these standards? They have as much to base their statements off of as the man done the road who says it is okay to attain sensual pleasures. So if something feels good to someone or makes them happy, what is to stop them from doing it. When we take a look at abortion, what could be wrong with it? It is only changing the course of some chance process. If it helps someone, what is to stop them from doing it? Naturalism has nothing that can prove it wrong. Now lets compare hunting for animals and murder of humans. What is the difference? There would be no difference, since one would not hold any special place over the other. This means that there is nothing wrong with killing a human. In fact, there would be nothing wrong with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He is called the founder of modern drama in the United States , and holds the title of the first American playwright to earn a Nobel Prize in literature. (O Neill 794) His play, The Emperor Jones, is credited as being one that provided several firsts in American theatre history: the Provincetown Players first major hit, the first major role for an African American actor on the legitimate Broadway stage (in houses where the audience was still racially segregated), and the play that secured O Neill s place as a writer for the high art, experimental theatre worthy of international attention. (Steen 343) Basically, The Emperor Jones made Eugene O Neill. The play is a psychological study of Brutus Jone s mind, his fears, visions and dream. Tom tom is part and parcel of the psychological action; at first it is the call to war ; then it merges into the Emperor Jones vision of the slaves working to its beat; finally it becomes is own throbbing, feverish temples, all the while it s our heart beating more and more rapidly as we follow his fate. lastly the Tom tom is a symbol of man s last heart beat, death the consciousness of Jones has been presented through the cinematographic technique of the flashback fusing the past and present. Flahtahl s Propaganda Triumph Of The Will ( 1938 ) Since the advent of documentary film with Robert Flaherty s Nanook of the North (1922), those with power have sought to use it as a tool in their arsenal to reach people. Advances in communications technology in the early twentieth century allowed it to be used as a one way message delivery system to the masses, however the ways in which this has been implemented have varied hugely based on context and political viewpoint. Through consideration of Leni Riefenstahl s propaganda Triumph of the Will (1935), and Lorentz s advocacy documentary The River (1938) this essay will analyse the concepts of persuasion, education and propaganda in documentary film, discussing the similarities and differences between these areas. It is worth first briefly defining the ideas that this essay will cover, education is at its purest form the provision of information and systematic instruction while persuasion is the attempt to induce change through reasoning. Propaganda, conversely, is non objective/biased information used to promote a point of view. Although on paper the distinctions seem clear, in practical use it quickly becomes apparent how much these lines can blur. If persuasion is a technique that attempts to change viewpoints, how far does it really sit from this idea of propaganda? How Does Shakespeare Use Figurative Language In Sonnet 130 In William Shakespeare s poem Sonnet 130, he describes his lover in a non idealistic way by describing her features which are the complete opposite of a typical lady in a Petrarchan sonnet. A sonnet is a 14 line poem with 10 syllable lines and a rhyming scheme that uses iambic pentameter. Petrarchan sonnets idolize women by creating a dream lady, thus resulting in unrealistic features. The typical Petrarchan lady has blonde hair, a high forehead, pale skin, and a long neck, and the physical traits are seen as a reflection of inner beauty. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 uses figurative language and a creative structure to mock the Petrarchan ideal by portraying true love for what s in the inside instead of lust or infatuation. Through Tony s dreams, the depth of the ambivalent dilemma is elucidated. From the very first dream in the novel, a stage is set for the ambivalent theme. Tony is witnessing a birth of a child who, barely out of the womb, is being fought over like the spoils of war. Would this child be tied to the earth as a Luna or free upon it as a Marez (Anaya 6)? There seems to be a connection between his history and future, whereas he must either decide an old way or create a new path that will unite his people. Moreover, there is a layering of irresolute issues in the dream sequences. To measure and compare the quality of life for people across the globe, several well being indicators were carefully selected and analysed. These indicators were thought to most appropriately represent human well being in each country as they covered areas such as education, the economy, and population. In the book Small Steps, Louis Sachar uses figurative language, conflict to help keep the reader engaged, and uses the same character s name in multiple of his books as his writing style. First off, one style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces or when two characters on a story get in a fist fight or just a fight over a conversation. In the book Small Steps, an example of conflict is on page 217, She picked up her cup and tossed the contents at him, splattering him with coffee and cream. Kira got mad at Armpit because Armpit said that Kira should consider another profession besides singing and Kira was really upset that Armpit said that. Kira tossed the cup of coffee at him while everyone in the store stared at Armpit with coffee all over his shirt. This relates to the author s style because Sachar likes to use a lot conflict in his books to keep the reader engaged. Another example of conflict in the book Small Steps is on page 199, Moses whacked him on the side of his head. X Ray gets hit on the side of his head very hard by Moses who is a man who wants the counterfeit tickets that X Ray has. X Ray s glasses broke and his tickets were stolen by Moses while X Ray laid on the floor after he got punched in the face. Sachar uses a lot of conflict in the books he writes. Secondly, another style that Louis Sachar uses in his books, especially Small Steps and Holes, is figurative language. Figurative language is language that uses words of expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. It also uses exaggerations or alterations to make a particular linguistic point. An example of figurative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. Immigration And Chinese Immigrants According to the online dictionary, the word foreign is an adjective and it is defined as of, from, in, or characteristic of a country or language other than one s own. The noun foreigner is defined as a person born in or coming from a country other than one s own. At first thought the words foreign and foreigner may not carry a significant amount of weight outside of its denotation but what about those who identify with either term? These people are looked as the others. In Anzia Yezierska s How I Found America and the poetry of the Chinese detainees on Angel Island both display an array of frustration because of mistreatment and their expectation of America were not met. The reason most immigrants move over from their original country to the United States is that they are in search of a better life and more opportunities. The Chinese are no different because a huge population came during the 1900s in search of jobs. Many worked as farmers, miners and railroad builders. Americans were not too thrilled so they accused the Chinese of monopolizing their jobs. President Chester A. Arthur on May 6, 1882, signed the Chinese Exclusion Acts which prevented Chinese immigrants from immigrating to the United States. From 1910 1940 when Chinese immigrated over they were kept and interrogated at Angel Island immigration station in San Francisco Bay. They were asked outrages questions and if they didn t answer correctly they would be deported. The Chinese expressed their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

INTRODUCTION: Classical robots are usually single complex pieces of electromechanical hardware designed to perform a task. They are typically expensive, specialized, and complicated. An alternate approach is to use a swarm composed of a large number of very simple robots that work together, rather than a single highly capable robot. In this approach, the strength of the system comes not from the complexity and power of a piece of hardware, but from the cooperation of a large number of individuals. As the cost of simple robotic components goes down and availability goes up, this approach becomes increasingly feasible. It is currently possible, for example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For successful operation they need appropriate communication strategies that should be dynamically adaptable to possibly changing environmental requirements. A promising way to achieve this is through the use of an evolutionary robotics (ER) approach, i.e., using evolutionary algorithms to evolve the robots controllers. Swarm Robotics is a new approach to the coordination of multi robot systems which consist of large numbers of usually, but not necessarily, simple physical robots. It is an interesting alternative to classical approaches to robotics because of some properties of problem solving by social animals, which is flexible, robust, decentralized and self organized. 6. There are now 793 billionaires (as of 2009) representing an essentially unimaginable amount of wealth. GSA s current value proposition to its clients is: 1) Greater accessibility to private equity firms through GSA s customized services, allowing less sophisticated clients to progress from a passive fund of funds investor into a direct private equity investor, removing the intermediation between the GP and the client; 2) A strategy of vintage year diversification , whereby GSA contributes to funds over a number of different years in order to gain access to many different types of funds; and 3) A compensation structure that is weighted towards carried interest at the expense of fees, ensuring an alignment of interests between GSA and its clients.
