Capitalism And Globalization
Capitalism provides and sustain an endless circle of production of commodities, promoting both mass
and niche consumptions, fueling the never ending economic cycle, generating over accumulation, and
finally a new crisis that reorganizes capitalism, starting everything over and over again (Baran
Sweezy, 1966; Harvey, 2003). The complexities entangled in the corporate culture of investment
banking, work place models, and organizational values of financial capitalism, as well as its cultural
and economic dimensions, obscure the blue collar, manufacturing, work underneath. Jobs performing
very physical and material duties are not only basic to a financial economy, but are at the foundations
of capitalism itself. However, this material work is blurred by the fancier discourses and images about
creative work , innovation , and economy of knowledge in a global scale.
Therefore, what role for capital does the communication system play? (Smythe, cited in Guback,
1994, p. 2). There are particularly three main processes involved in the connections between
communication and capital: the commodification, that is, the process of transforming use to exchange
value; the spacialization, described as the transformation of the time/space produced by
communication, and finally, the structuration, which is the process of building structures with social
agency (Mosco, 2009). These three processes are tightly embedded in the globalization phenomena
and its implications, such as the

Differentiated Instruction
Differentiated instruction helps to alleviate the complication of instructing multiple learning
modalities and plan for all students in one simple lesson plan. How does it work? What are the
recommended instructional strategies? In the article, Creating Lesson Plans for all Learners the
authors give an example of how to plan using differentiated instruction. Their lesson plan format
includes: 1) State the objective of the lesson; 2) State the learner focus of the lesson; 3) Include
activities that will enable the students to get engaged and interact; 4) State a closure summary i.e.
overview of the lesson; 5) State any lesson extensions such as any follow up activities; 6) Include
independent practice activities; 7) Include an evaluation format; 8) Reteach lesson in future lessons
(reiteration and confirmation that lesson was understood by students). In another article, Teacher
Learning through Self Regulation , the focus is on the teacher being able to regulate themselves (Katie
Tricarico, Diane Yendol Hoppey, 2012). Self regulation is a big part of integration and programming
for differentiated instruction and can be defined as concerning itself with a teacher s conscious goal
setting and proactive stance towards making a change in the classroom (Katie Tricarico, Diane Yendol
Hoppey, 2012). It is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Response to Intervention is described as a tiered, integrated system of assessment and instruction with

Unit 2 Assignment 1 Cellular Structures and Pathogenicity
Cellular Structures and Pathogenicity
Jennifer L. Wethington
ITT Technical Institute
Unit 2 Assignment 1 Bacterial illness is a result of complex interactions between bacteria and the host.
During evolution, humans developed many ways to protect themselves against bacterial pathogens.
On the other hand, bacteria have developed strategies to evade, subvert or circumvent these defenses
(Sousa, 2003) One of the most important characteristics of bacterial pathogenicity is the various
strategies developed by prokaryotic organisms to use host molecules for their own benefit (Sousa,
2003). To accomplish this, bacteria have evolved elaborate control mechanisms to turn genes on and
off, varying the transcriptional activator or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the initial phase of infection, environmental strains of P. aeruginosa from any aqueous setting are
inadvertently inhaled or otherwise delivered to the upper respiratory tract (Feldman, et al., 1998). It is
at this stage where the expression of functional flagella is critical, providing chemotaxis toward
desirable substrates, such as mucin, and the motility essential for widespread dissemination (Feldman,
et al., 1998). In the normal host, the presence of defenses and additional antimicrobial peptides, the
affinity of flagella components for mucin glycopeptides, and the process of mucociliary clearance are
likely to eradicate such transiently inhaled organisms from the respiratory tract before any epithelial
immune response is elicited (Feldman, et al., 1998).
While motility is commonplace among the prokaryotes, it is important to note the variety of structures
responsible for motility. These structures vary depending not only on the organism in question, but
also on the particular environment (Bardy, Ng, Jarrell, 2003). Study of the bacterial flagellum has
provided insights into many aspects of prokaryotic cellular activities including genetics and
regulation, physiology, environmental sensing, protein secretion and assembly of complex structures
(Bardy, Ng, Jarrell, 2003). Continued study of all prokaryotic motility structures will provide
knowledge that is likely to reach far beyond the topic of motility and pathogenicity (Bardy, Ng,

Closed Circulatory System Lab Report
The purpose of this experiment was to identify how open and closed circulatory systems respond to
chemical stimulants. During this experiment a ghost shrimp represented the open circulatory system,
while the black worm represented the closed circulatory system. For each organism there resting heart
rates were recorded by count the number of pulsations the organism had under a microscope. First, the
shrimp and the worm were treated with caffeine, and then their heart rate was recorded after the
organisms were exposed to the treatment for three minutes. The organisms were removed from the
caffeine, and were given time to return back to their resting heart rates. The shrimp and the worm were
then exposed to ethanol, and there hear rates were recorded again. ... Show more content on

When the shrimp was exposed to the caffeine the heart rate increased by 50.4 beats, and when the
shrimp was exposed to the ethanol the heart rate decreased by 34.8 beats. The worms average resting
heart rate was 21, the heart rate affected by caffeine was 32.83, and the heart rate affected by ethanol
was 21. The average increase in heart rate was 11.83 beats, and the average decrease in heart rate was
7.5 beats. From this data we can conclude that caffeine acted as a chemical stimulant and speed up
how frequently the heart was pumping blood into the system. Ethanol acted as a chemical sedative and
slowed down how many times the heart pumped blood into the system. Even though the two
organisms had different circulatory systems, they were still affected in the same manner. The only
difference between the two systems during this experiment is open circulatory systems have higher
heart rates overall compared to closed circulatory

Cherokee And Indian Culture
A large part of the formation of our country and Western society involved interaction with tribes of
Native Americans that inhabited North America well before Europeans settled it. It started with
Spanish conquistadors and explorers, then British colonies which would mold and change into the
revolutionized American Colonists. Along this succession, the Indian tribes on the east coast
experienced extreme prejudice, regime changes and war. Among these tribes are the Cherokee. The
Cherokee were at the forefront of Indian European relations. They remained strong in the southeast,
despite war and epidemic. The Cherokee underwent significant culture changes yet not always by
choice. War and disease tore apart the Cherokee as well other tribes but

Importance Of Anglo-Saxon Loyalty In Beowulf
The Anglo Saxons were an interesting people that were loyal to their lord. Each group had a leader
that commanded and directed the warriors. Loyalty was an important part of the Anglo Saxons culture.
In Beowulf, the Anglo Saxons were expected to remain loyal to their leader as he was responsible for
protecting them in battle. The leaders of the Anglo Saxons were admired for their courage and
determination as they guided the group of warriors in their endeavors. In The Wife s Lament , the wife
remains loyal to her lord even though she is treated harshly by him. She chased after him when he left,
and continued to love him after he ostracized her. As evident in Beowulf and The Wife s Lament , the
Anglo Saxons greatly relied on a noble leader to protect them from danger and direct them towards
success; as a result, the followers were loyal to their lord by showing reverence and admiration as well
as honouring their legacy, even if the lord neglected to fulfill his duties. Throughout their journey and
various battles, Beowulf and Wiglaf remained loyal to their lords. While in Denmark, Beowulf
remains loyal to his king, Higlac, and the other warriors remain loyal to Beowulf. During his formal
boast, Beowulf told his men that my hands shall fight for me as My lord Higlac, might think less of
me (246 270) if he fought with weapons. Beowulf wanted to impress his lord and not disappoint him
in battle. He feared that he would bring shame to his lord if he fought with weapons or

Indus Valley Seals
The large and under appreciated civilization of the Indus Valley reveals treasures and achievements of
ancestors from our past. A seal from the Indus Valley has left historians and archeologists puzzled
about its possible meanings. Archeologists believe the seal could represent a particular business, or
even a prominent individual. The seals found could signify trade and commerce amongst villages,
representing their leaders, a sacrificial ritual, or protection and procreation. In some ancient societies
seals were used for printing an image on a document or product. In the Indus Valley the seals often
have images of animals and some kind of title or inscription. Unfortunately the language written on
these seals is still undeciphered. The specific ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To illustrate, the Indus civilization flourished a thousand years later than the Middle East and North
Africa. So these huge civilizations were already dominating the area, leaving the Indus Valley in the
shadows. Then Indian or South Asian civilizations moved toward the plains of the Ganges River,
which archeologists believed covered all that remained of the Indus (p.103). The Indus Valley began
to decline around 1700 B.C.E and was not rediscovered until the twentieth century. Therefore decades
passed before any recognition of the Indus Valley, causing erosion and wear on the artifacts and
history of the valley. All scholars have really uncovered are the advanced cities and neighborhoods
they made. This leaves a lot of room for potential explanations about the civilization and their lives.
Moreover, the script written on the seals found are unrecognizable and archeologists cannot decode
the language. The language written on these seals is unlike any other dialect. In addition, our mindset
compared to the people of the Indus Valley is worlds apart. A plausible reason why people cannot
decipher these intricate seals is our mind are overcomplicating their meanings. I think we perplex, or
over simplify, their dialect. We are so in the dark about the interpretations of this ancient civilization
and their seals because the Indus Valley is foreign to us. Limited archeologist

Sexual Objectification Of Music Videos And How Adolescents...
Sexual Objectification in Music Videos and How Adolescents Are Affected
Lauren Faron, Aynsley Fishel, Nisha Patel, Menelik Solomon
The Ohio State University
Music videos are easily accessible to everyone, especially adolescents. From its earliest origins on TV
to recent upgrades to technology on the internet, such as YouTube, anyone can watch music videos at
any time of the day. Online music video sites draw an average of 150 million people each month who
view more than two billion videos per day (Mischner, Schie, Wigboldus, Baaren, Engels, 2013).
Sexually objectifying music videos have increased in the last couple of decades. With this, more
adolescents are being influenced by viewing these videos and mostly all of them are affected in some
way, either positive or negative. What a lot of people do not know is what is happening to adolescents
after viewing these types of music videos and how it can lead to concerning effects later in
development.
Literature Review
Adolescence is a crucial time in the lives of young boys and girls, especially when it comes to viewing
music videos. A survey showing that 78% of girls 12 19 years old watch MTV regularly, making them
the most frequent viewers at around 6.4 hours a week (Bell, Lawton, Dittmar, 2007). This is important
because it brings into light the idea of girls watching these sexually objectifying videos and how they
experience body dissatisfaction. Body dissatisfaction is a

It was concluded that the height of the atrium and the fan locations have obvious effect on the efficient
abstraction. Atrium with height more than 30 m with exhaust fans located towards the ends may
require attention to control the smoke abstraction efficiently.
Yi, Hou, Li and Feng Chow [13] study the relation between the atrium aspect ratio under different heat
release rate of fire the flooding time flow of smoke occurs and, 32 simulations were performed using a
model, FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator, Version 3). Table 2.4 shows the size of the atrium and HRR of
steady fire. For the all simulations, (3×3×3) meter fire room was used, the fire was at the center of the
floor of the fire room, and 27 m height atrium. The vents in the fire floor were both (2×1.5) meter with
located at 1 m above the floor with 20 oC ambient temperature.
Figure 2.8 listed the early stage situation of the fire in a floor near to an atrium. The fire floor has 2
vertical vents named WA and WB and there are open to both the atrium and outside. The atrium
ceiling is open, and it is assumed that there is an ideal isolation between the atrium and the adjacent

History And Background Of John Deere
History and Background of John Deere John Deere (also known as Deere and Company) began when
founder John Deere, a blacksmith and a repair man, began to grow tired with the traditional way of
making plows. Plows in the nineteenth century were made to order and usually made from wood or
iron. In 1837, John Deere created a plow using a steel saw blade. The smooth sided plow was much
easier and faster to clean than traditional plows (Wikipedia). John Deere decided that he would
manufacture the plows and then put them up for sale. This allowed customers to actually see what
they were buying beforehand. His business started to gain popularity. In 1912, the company began to
expand into the tractor business. In 1918 Deere and Company purchased

Theme Of Good And Evil In The Picture Of Dorian Gray
What is the true meaning of good and evil. Good is that which is morally right and evil is profoundly
immoral and malevolent. Good vs evil is a prominent theme used in literature. Two authors Oscar
Wilde and Robert Louis Stevenson explore the theme of good vs evil in their novels The Picture of
Dorian Gray and The Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In the novel both main characters
Dorian gray and Dr. Jekyll are overthrown by the evil. Also in both novels you can see how
influences, interactions, and beauty ultimately take them down the wrong path.
In The Picture of Dorian Gray the main character Dorian gray was first an innocent man and role
model to artist Basil Howard who represented humanity. Overtime influences, interactions, and beauty
got the best of him. In The Picture of Dorian Gray Basil says He has a simple and a beautiful nature.
Your aunt was quite right in what she said of him. Don t spoil him. Don t try to influence him. Your
influence would be bad this shows how even at the very beginning Basil knew how Lord Henry would
influence him in a negative way. As we read on we can see how lord Henry teaches him to only care
about beauty which causes Dorian to believe beauty is the only thing that matters in life. Lord Henry
was the main cause of the corruption of Dorian s soul. In the novel another quote Lord Henry says is
Oh, she is better than good she is beautiful, . This demonstrates how from the very get go he told
Dorian that beauty is better than goodness. The poisonous book was another way Dorian was
overtaken by the evil. In the novel it says It was a poisonous book. The heavy odor of incense seemed
to cling about its pages and to trouble the brain. The mere cadence of the sentences, the subtle
monotony of their music, so full as it was of complex refrains and movements elaborately repeated,
produced in the mind of the lad, as he passed from chapter to chapter, a form of reverie, a malady of
dreaming, that made him unconscious of the falling day and creeping shadows. This quote proves how
the evil has already taken over him and now the book is taking over his soul. A clear piece of evidence
that shows readers how the evil has really won in The Picture of Dorian Gray is the

points of the crusades. The crusades went on for years. Causing the pointless death of many people.and
the three key points may be the most important and bloody of them all.
The First Crusade began 1096 and ended 1099. The first crusade was an attempt to recapture
Jerusalem after the capture from the Muslims in 1076. The Christians that stayed and payed the tax for
pilgrimage faced hard times. Muslims soldiers made the life of these Christians very difficult. When
the pope called on war volunteers for the war cut out red crosses and sewn the to their tunics. As the

of crusaders and a large number of unofficial rag tag armies fighting in the crusades. A monk name
Fulcher wrote when the crusaders got over the walls of Jerusalem the Muslim soldiers ran away. He
also claimed the Crusaders cut down anybody and everybody in their path of destruction to the
Muslims. In this Seige of Jerusalem the Muslims that had their lives spared after blood ran ankle deep,
had to carry the bodies of 70000 of the people they used to call friends, neighbors, and family.
Europeans remained committed to recapture Jerusalem and planned first by taking control of Egypt.
Crusaders believed break the unity of Egypt and the rest shall fall.Instead of the previous failures of

Immigration Into Canada
Immigration Into Canada
Abstract This paper is concerned with the recent wave of Hong Kong immigrants into Vancouver. The
stage is set for this discussion by first explaining some background behind Canadian immigration
policy and then discussing the history of
Chinese immigrants in Vancouver. From these discussions we are informed that
Canadian immigration policy was historically ethnocentric and only began to change in the late 1960s.
It was at this point that we see a more multicultural group of immigrants into our nation. The history
of Chinese immigration in
Vancouver, and for that matter, Canada is not positive one. The experiences and prejudices which were
developed over 100 years ago still colours the way in which we view one ... Show more content on

Throughout the 20th Century the Canadian government has set targets for the number of immigrant
entries based upon economic criteria. Periods of encouragement have included the early decades of
this century along with the reconstruction era of Post World War II. The 30s, 40s and the recession of
the early 80s have been periods during which the national government has discouraged immigration.
At times, economic concerns have given way to humanitarian ones such as during the Soviet invasions
of Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and during the Vietnamese refugee crisis of the 70s. Generally,
however, Canadian immigration targets have reflected the rate of economic expansion and
employment. An exception to this rule was during the latter part of the 1980s. Worry over the
declining fertility rate and our ageing population led the federal government to raise its annual targets
despite high unemployment. Most recently, under economic pressures, the most recent Liberal
government once again lowered the immigration level.
The Geography of Immigration There have also been attempts at controlling the geography of
immigrant settlement. The Federal government stated that one of the primary goals of immigration is
to, foster the development of a strong and viable economy and the prosperity of all regions in Canada.
Immigration in our country has been seen as a means of promoting economic development in less
prosperous regions, as well as supporting heartland areas. While the

The Experience of Media Violence for Children
Media Violence By the time a child reaches the age of one, they see about 200,000 acts of violence on
television. (Nakaya, 3). The Media has been becoming more and more violent over the years. A poll in
an issue of Times Magazine, from 2005, showed that 66 percent of Americans think that there is an
abundant amount of graphic acts of violence on televisions (Nakaya, 18). People are exposed to
thousands of acts of violence through video games, television, and movies. Many studies show that
media violence increases violent behavior in in humans. Studies show, violent video games, and
graphic television have physiological effects on children. The government has very few regulations on
media violence. Some people believe the government shouldn t limit content because others might be
insulted by its material. Even though the government shouldn t censor the media, Media violence is
becoming a serious issue because it is becoming more violent, it makes people behave violently, and it
has little regulations. The regularity and asperity of media violence has dramatically increased over
the years. Media violence is such a broad topic, so we cannot simple get rid of it. People are exposed
violent acts in the media everyday between video games, movies, and television. The Federal
Communications Commission stipulates, By the time most children begin the third grade, they will
have spent the equivalent of three school years in front of a television set. The Media has such a large

Listen To Music Analysis
How to Listen to Music, Not Just Hear it
To learn to listen to music, not just hear itYou need the right room, the right equipment, the perfect
volume, the perfect spot, and (of course), the embracing of the music. After you have all the proper
tools, you can sit and enjoy the music.
The first consideration is to listen to music in a comfortable chair. I would highly recommend a good
quality Lazy Boy recliner. Now, you need to find the best room to put that chair in, so you can listen to
you music. The room can be any normal room with four walls but, the room can t be wide open. For
example, it can t be an unfinished basement with concrete walls and a cement floor. The sound will

If the speaker s cabinets are placed twelve feet apart from each other, divide twelve feet in half, which
gives us six feet. That s the middle, so mark that location. From that mark, measure twelve feet back,
and mark that spot on the floor. You have found the perfect spot for you to achieve the best sound
from your music.
Next, you need a receiver. The receiver is a power source and a switchboard for your additional stereo
components. Any receiver will do, as long as it has one hundred watts per speaker out put. Then, you
need a compact disc player, a single or a five disc is fine. Some speaker wire is a must.
Speakers on the other hand, are a tough choice because there are so many of them. You want to spend
at least four hundred dollars when buying speakers.
Anything lower than four hundred dollars is usually low quality, which can increase the risk of
destroying your speakers.
When you decide on three sets of speakers (one set equals two speakers) at you local speaker shop,
have a salesman play some of your cd s that you brought with you. Make sure you listen to the same
song per set of speakers.
Also, bring different types; classical, jazz, blues, rap, and 80 s; whatever.
Forget what the salesman says. Just remember, your ears won t deceive you.
Figure out what sounds the best to you, then slap your credit card down and lets go home and listen to
some music.

Descriptive Essay About My Room
Right now, my room is very childish. The colors in my room are very vibrant. My walls are a bright
blue and the shelves in my room are orange, pink and neon green. My comforter has all of those colors
in a straight line pattern. It helps to connect my entire room together, but it is time for a makeover. The
only thing staying the same in my room are the closets because they are a great storage area. Since the
closets are added on to the shape of the room, they do not take away from the space. I want my room
to be a place that is relaxed and comfy, but also a place where my friends and I can hang out. To
complete this goal, I am using a grey color on my walls to create a relaxed feeling. I am making my
room feel more grown up with a more neutral look and a bedspread as my accent.
1. Space is the three dimensional space that a designer works with. Different sized areas convey
different feelings. I wanted my room to feel relaxed, but I still wanted it to be a social area when my
friends come over. I spaced my furniture so it would not feel too cramped, while not feeling too big. I
placed objects in my room, so there are not too many pieces in one area. I also made sure there were
enough things in my room so it did not have an empty feeling.
2. Lines are elements of design that have one dimension and one length. Lines creates a sense of
movement and direction in the room. In my room I use a variety of lines. My bed, desk and dresser

The As Rites Of Passage Coordinates
Trans, as Rites of Passage Coordinates Gender transition makes for a provocative quilting point. It
shapes various Western social conventions regarding binary gender identities into an intelligible and
recognizable rite of passage. Originally theorized by anthropologist Arnold Van Gennep (date), rites of
passage configure social status changes into a visible tripartite process denoted by a starting point of
separation, followed by a transitional (or liminal) stage, and concluding with a reinstallation back into
society under the new station (CITE). While the process is undertaken by, and therefore has been
ostensibly created for, the individual (or initiate), rites of passage are constituted and maintained by
the State, which institutionally controls or signifies passage from one phase of the process to another.
Each gradation of gender transition beginning with the individual s divorce from their prior status (as
a man or woman ), through the mediated liminal state (hormone replacement therapy, real life test,
ongoing therapeutic consultation, surgical remedies), and reinstallation (acknowledged through post
operative letters and/or altered documents to be given albeit limited passing privilege) is orchestrated,
measured and controlled. The expected awarded result is to be recognized as analogous with
cisgendered women and men. In a predominantly binary gendered society, to pass as Cisgender
defines the successful gendered rite of passage; conversely,

Function, Structure, Synthesis And The Use Of The Protein...
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the function, structure, synthesis and the use of the protein
elastin (ELN), which encodes for one of the two elements of elastic fibers in the human body (NCBI
1). Addressing the fundamental aspects of the protein will allow us to explore the potential
applications and implications of the protein if it has been modified.
Introduction and Function
Elastin is the one of the key components in the elastic property of tissues found in human tissues such
as arteries, lungs, and elastic cartilage to name a few (Jacob, Sauvage, Osbourne 1). Elastin is mainly
composed of amino acids glycine and proline, which are hydrophobic and are combined with lysine
residues in crosslinks (NCBI 1). It plays a fundamental role in the recoil of tissues after being
stretched, which is critical in maintaining the cells health (Weiss 1). Thirty percent of the dry weight
of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in arteries is comprised of the protein elastin, hence, making it an
essential part of human tissue (Krettek, Sukhova, Libby 1). Elastin can be found abundantly in the
dermis of the skin, the arterial walls, the pulmonary tissues, which helps with the expansion of the
lungs upon breathing and the recoil upon exhaling (Krettek, Sukhova, Libby 1). Elastin in the skin is
elastic tissue intertwined with other components in the dermis through fibers that are interconnected
(Krettek, Sukhova, Libby 1). The skin is dense with elastic tissue, which allows for the

process of advancements over time. This essay will examine life in the period 1500 1800 as
highlighted in the work of George Blainey (2000) and will compare key differences of life in this early
period, against life in the modern world today. Throughout this essay, the main focus will be based on
three areas which have seen significant change over this period of time: the production of food, work
practices and the standard of living. The advancements in these three areas, has led to societies living

409). While these workers could be sure of not going hungry, this meant the take home wages were
low.
Living standards as described by Blainey (2000) were bleak. Most people lived in one roomed, small
stone houses, often with four or more sharing one bed. Homes often remained unheated due to scarcity
of wood (Blainey 2000, p. 423). People were largely uneducated and knew little about healthcare.
Sewerage was disposed of in the same rivers that were used to drink and wash from. These
contaminated rivers were used to supply water to the growing crops. This had a huge impact on health,
causing infection in around two out of every three people in rural areas (Blainey 2000, p. 415). Lack
of hygiene and knowledge of healthcare led to shorter lifespans.
Life today in 2014 is vastly different to the period 1500 1800 as described by Blainey (2000). Survival
no longer hinges on hunting and gathering food. In fact many people today give little or no thought to
food production. Instead, we drive to a supermarket and buy whatever we want to eat. We have access
to many restaurants and fast food outlets, so we not only have ample food at our fingertips, we don t
even have to prepare it if we choose not to. Advancements in production and using machines in place
of humans (Henslin, Possamai and Possamai Inesedy 2011, p. 139) mean food is now farmed and
produced on a much larger scale (Macionis and

The Power Of Control In George Orwell s 1984
George Orwell s 1984 and the Power of Controlling Thought INTRO PARAGRAPH: Ever read 1984
by George Orwell? It s a novel that is one of those big, bad always watching government types. I
assume you ve read it if you are reading this. In the novel, the government uses the power to control
what people believe and see to its advantage and does this through its ability to brainwash the masses.
Now, the novel and the world we live hold some similarities that I am going to share today. THESIS
STATEMENT: Orwell depicts the effects of an over controlling government on its citizens and the
similarity of its parallel effects in the current world we live in today. In 1984, the way the people are
controlled is through the power the government has over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If we look at the prompts we were given for this exact essay, one is asking us to defend the accuracy
of the statement for the theme of that the government s actions are not benevolent, but self serving.
The prompt itself isn t asking us if it is accurate. It s telling us that it is. What this does is give us as a
reader the preconceived notion that this is the truth. The problem here being that what if we don t
think that this statement is what the novel is about. Truthfully, you can interpret anything from a
novel, so you could really put any theme there and defend it. However the statement from the novel
itself describes this perfectly. Don t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of
thought? In the end we shall make thought crime literally impossible, because there will be no words
in which to express it. (Orwell 23) The essays that we have been told to write are in fact doing such a
thing by having us restate themes and opinions told to us by higher powers and then defend such
themes. What this does is condition us to not have our own opinion on things. How many times have
you been on the internet and you see someone get famous based off their opinion on something, only
to have everyone else then start thinking the exact same way. People are in some regards, very sheep
like creatures where they have to seek out a subjective viewpoint on

Marriott Case
Finding Marriott s WACC To calculate the WACC we need to identify the different factors included in
the WACC method, to be able to measure the opportunity cost for investments. First we need to
identify the debt, equity and the firm value, which is equity plus debt. Then we identify the debt cost
(rD), which is a pre tax cost, and then we need to identify the cost of equity (rE). As we can observe in
table A, the debt percentage in capital is 60 %, which implies that the equity is 40 %. By dividing the
income taxes by the company s income before taxes, we find that t = 175,9 / 398,9 = 0,44 To find the
risk free rate, we chose to use the arithmetic average on long term U.S. government bond returns for

government rates to find the risk free rate (table B), which is 8,95%, and according to table A, the
spread for such an investment is 1,10%. rD for lodging division = 8,95% + 1,10% = 10,05%. We think
that the financing of the restaurant division is a bit different. Since we re told that Marriott in a higher
degree uses more short term debt to finance this division, we use only 10 year interest rates, which,
according to table B is 8,72%. The restaurant division has a significantly higher spread, which is
1,80%. rD for restaurant division = 8,72% + 1,80% = 10,52%. These are only the fixed part of the cost
of debt. For the floating part of the debt we use one year bonds. This means that the floating part of
the cost of debt is for the lodging division 6,90% + 1,10% = 8,00%, and for the restaurant division it s
6,90% + 1,80% = 8,70%, due to the different spreads. The lodging division has 50% fixed debt rate
and 50 % floating rate, whilst the restaurant division has 25% floating rate and 75% fixed rate. These
numbers gives the following calculation for the different costs of debt: Lodging cost of debt: 50% *
8,00% + 50% * 10,05% = 9,025% Restaurant cost of debt: 75% * 8,70% + 25% * 10,52% = 10,065%
These different divisions need a different cost of debt because of the fact that assets in the restaurant
and contracting services have shorter useful lives. Marriott also

Pennsylvania Code Of Conduct Essay
The Pennsylvania Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators was created in order to
provide teachers with standards for preparation, certification, practice and ethics (PA Code of
Conduct, 1973). Some of the standards that teachers are expected to uphold in the classroom include
treating all students fairly, instilling good citizenship upon students, keeping an open mind. Section
235.4. part 4 states that Professional educators shall exhibit consistent and equitable treatment of
students... They shall respect the civil rights of all and not discriminate on the basis of race, national or

Section 235.10 states that teachers may not have sexual relations with students. This rule is
straightforward and in place for obvious reasons. Relationships between teachers and students violate
laws and place students and teachers into an altered power dynamic. If students and teachers had
relations outside of school it could lead to unfair treatment. Another rule that must be followed when it
comes to teaching is that teachers must obtain proper certification in order to teach. This rule is in
place to ensure that our children are being taught by qualified individuals. Before someone can step
into a classroom and teach they must obtain teaching certification. Additionally, Section 235.4. part 3
of the PA Code of Conduct states that Professional educators shall maintain high levels of competence
throughout their careers (PA Code of Conduct, 1973). This rule is in place to ensure that students are
receiving the best possible education. Teachers need to be able to keep up with our ever changing

Proposed Defunding Of Agricultural Classes On The Nation...
As of March of 2016, Gov. Bruce Rauner of Illinois has proposed defunding of agricultural classes in
his state. Think about this, the governor of a state where one in four jobs in Illinois are directly related
to agriculture wants to give a grand total of zero dollars to the Future Farmers of America along with
ag classes in general. This is the reason that schools not only should offer agriculture related classes,
but in order to graduate from high school every student should at least take one class of ag. At the end
of the day all people must know where the nation s food comes from and how it gets from the pasture
to the store. There are only two percent of the nation s population that are farmers. Two percent of the
people in America raise the crops and the meat for the whole country. This number needs to change in
order to ensure that children and the nation s children will be able to survive. Today s kids do not
know where their food is from which means they take farmers for granted. One personal story that can
be recalled happened just recently. A student pointed to a turkey and asked What is that? A giant
rooster? The response was No, that is a turkey, and they come from turkey houses. This is what
brought up the thought of just how important ag education is. The ones in the field work very hard to
improve the ways of life for the animals and plants they grow so that the people of America can eat. A
recent study showed that U.S. cattle ranchers raise just

Challenges Faced By The Australian Government And Designers
Australia, like many other countries across the globe, faces challenges presented by existing climate
conditions and the future rates of change. Today s decisions, policies, and developing technologies
may alter the ways that climate change will impact the country. As a whole, the Australian government
and designers are already beginning to address these issues through the implementation of sustainable
building codes and the use of climate responsive design and materials that will adjust as the climate
does.

Cult Of The Amateur By Andrew Keen Analysis
In his book, Cult of The Amateur, Andrew Keen titles the phenomenon of democratization of the web ,
where almost anyone in this age now has the opportunity to put whatever they desire on the web, the
great seduction . For example, a survey done in the United Kingdom revealed that nearly one third of
teenagers aged fourteen and above, had some sort of content online. (White and Wyn 2008) As the
amount of content being produced and posted online far outsources the capability of any authority to
censor or monitor them, it can accurately be said that genuine cultural experiences, universal truth,
and professionalism are disappearing at record speed. POINT 1 Disappearance of Truth It was what
Keen called the great seduction where the new web promised to bring more truth and globalization but
instead, it brought a truth created by the general consensus of web users (16). Keen likens this to Big

Cosmological Argument From Motion
To begin, we start with an a posteriori argument, or an argument from experience. Arguments from
experiences of the world to the existence of God are called cosmological arguments. This particular
argument is the argument from motion. Argument from Motion: P1. Some things are moved. P2. If
something is moved to being F, then it is potentially but not actually F. P3. If something moves a thing
to be F, then it (the mover) is in a state of actuality relevant to F. C1. If something were to move itself
to be F (e.g., be both moved and its own mover), then it would be both potentially but not actually F
and also in a state of actuality relevant to F (conjunction, modus ponens, P1 3). P4. But it is not
possible for something to be both potentially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I will leave it to con to find any objections to this argument; however, I will respond to one
preemptive problem that may seemingly arise. The issue comes from a seeming contradiction between
Newton s law of inertial motion, or Newton s first law of motion, and the Aristotelian definition of
motion on which the argument above rests. The problem may be resolved in two ways. Firstly, to
assert that there is a contradiction is to equivocate between two different definitions of the word
motion. Newton s account of motion is only concerned with local motion (motion or change in terms
of place or location), while the Aristotelian is concerned with change of every sort (quality, quantity,
substance, accident, etc.). Secondly, there is no formal contradiction. As the Thomist philosopher
Edward Feser says: Suppose that motion is being used in the two principles in the same sense. Even
given this assumption, there is no formal contradiction between them. Newton s law tells us that a
body will in fact continue its uniform rectilinear motion if it is moving at all, as long as external forces
do not prevent this. It does not tell us why it will do so. In particular, it does not tell us one way or the
other whether there is a mover of some sort which ensures that an object obeys the First Law, and
which is in that sense responsible for its

Magical Realism In Wolf Whistle
In Lewis Nordan s novel Wolf Whistle, he recounts the true story of Emmett till in a fictional tale. Till
was a fourteen year old African American boy who was brutally murdered after whistling at a white
woman. He was nearly beaten to death, had his eye gouged out, and was shot in the head, wrapped in
barbed wire, then thrown in the river and held down by a cotton gin fan by two white men. These men
were later acquitted of their crimes by a jury of their peers. This homicide was a major turning point in
the civil rights movements that were sweeping across the nation in the 1950s. He was able to recount
the story by referencing real life events and using symbolism and magical realism. Magical realism is
a literary genre that combines realistic narrative with supernatural elements of dreams or fantasy.
Some great examples of magical realism are: Mrs. Gregg s bizarreness, Alice Conroy Flashback, and
Bobo demon eye. Mrs. Gregg had such an extreme stutter that she could not be understood unless she
spoke to the tune of Here Comes Santa Claus. In this example, her stutter is a realistic narrative, and
Santa Claus had broken her chains and set her free, (page. 17). Santa Claus had not literally allowed
her to speak, but for some odd reason, thinking and speaking to that specific tune allowed her to be
understood.
Immediately following this, Alice Conroy, the fourth grade teacher, has a vision. In her vision, she
saw: ancient Bethlehem; desegregation of schools; a bombed

The Pros and Cons of Home Schooling Essay
Advantages and Disadvantages of Home Schooling
When it comes to the education of today s youth, the idea of home schooling is a highly debated topic.
Many people are for home schooling; similarly, many people are against it. The basis of this debate is
one of great importance: our children need an education that prepares them for the world. It is the
parents right to decide how best to obtain this goal.
Advantages unique to home schooling include its convenience, looser attendance policies, and
individualized attention. Of special importance to the community, is that with more home schooled
children, the cost of running public schools is reduced. With fewer enrollments, there is less demand
for facilities and supplies, thus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And, for families that do extensive traveling, go on prolonged family vacations, are in the military and
cannot keep a steady residency, or for a child who has a clinical or terminal illness, this is a blessing.
For parents who wish to have their children home schooled, it is fairly simple to accomplish, granted
that one parent is willing to stay at home and be the teacher. In the state of New Jersey, no certification
is needed for a parent to begin home schooling (Stephens). Parents teach their children to the best of
their ability with the knowledge and skills they themselves already posses. In cases where a parent has
previously earned a college degree and is currently out of work or is working from home, it can be
beneficial to both the parent and the child.
Parents who home school their children argue that their children receive a better and more fulfilling
education because of the individualized attention. Today s public schools are becoming too
overcrowded and the quality of education is decreasing. Home schooling requires no set curriculum;
however, parents must prove equivalent academic instruction to a local superintendent (Stephens).
With this, parents can be more focused on teaching their child subjects that truly interest them. In
some cases, the child also receives a greater depth of knowledge because there is more time to
complete research. With public schooling comes test pressure and anxiety. Testing is not

Presidential Elections Dbq
Television is an important educational tool in society, however, it does not have a place in presidential
elections, due to the inequality and lack of substantive discussion in televised debates, as well as
irrelevant physical standards being placed upon presidential candidates. Journalists agree that political
debates are an ineffective method for deciding the leader of the country, and they are not worth the use
of television resources. Should the decision of who is in charge of a massive country be made based
on physical appearances, such as height, hairstyle and other superficial traits? Using these methods of
deduction to decide an elected official is extremely unintelligent and ineffective compared to the
alternative, an intelligent interview printed in an article or magazine. Citizens of a society are
incredibly resistant to change, but examining journalists opinions and articles proves that a significant
change must be made. The lack of substantive discussion in televised presidential debates largely
contributes to the negative effect television has had on presidential elections. Many ... Show more

Roman Roads Research Paper
At the peak of the Roman Empire, there were over 250,000 miles of roads that connected nearby cities
to Rome. Over 50,000 miles were paved roads that allowed quicker and safer travel for the Roman
army, officials, messengers, and trading of goods. The road system was much like modern day roads
including mile markers, inns, restaurants, and protection. With a simple yet advanced design, Roman
roads paved the way for Roman conquest and a superior authority throughout the Roman Empire.
These roads allowed for faster and easier transportation, encouraging people to journey near and far.

Along the Roman roads were state operated lodgings and way stations. Stations were established
(stationes), some of them only to change horses (mutationes), others for overnight stops (mansiones).
Augustus was the one that ordered the entire road network inventory, charging M. Agrippa with that
responsibility (Zaharia, Aurel). Located every ten miles was horse changing stations, where
government travelers could exchange out their tired horse or donkey. These were particularly
important for tax collectors and message delivery, as they were required to travel great distances at
rapid speed. Stopping frequently at these changing stations could allow travelers to go three times
further than maintain the same horse. Positioned approximately every twenty miles were hotels that
offered all the necessities for an overnight stop.
Roman roads were also well protected and patrolled by smaller branches of the Roman army. Most
often the soldiers that were assigned to patrol the roads were lower ranking soldiers known as
stationarii. Stationarii soldiers were usually positioned at a post for an average term of two years.
Along with handling local protection and intervention these soldiers were required to oversee the
nearby roads. Watchtowers and post could be found in high traffic as well as isolated areas to offer

In 1998, the Mars Climate Orbiter disintegrated in Mars upper atmosphere before it had the chance to

  • 2. Capitalism And Globalization Capitalism provides and sustain an endless circle of production of commodities, promoting both mass and niche consumptions, fueling the never ending economic cycle, generating over accumulation, and finally a new crisis that reorganizes capitalism, starting everything over and over again (Baran Sweezy, 1966; Harvey, 2003). The complexities entangled in the corporate culture of investment banking, work place models, and organizational values of financial capitalism, as well as its cultural and economic dimensions, obscure the blue collar, manufacturing, work underneath. In another article, Teacher Learning through Self Regulation , the focus is on the teacher being able to regulate themselves (Katie Tricarico, Diane Yendol Hoppey, 2012). Self regulation is a big part of integration and programming for differentiated instruction and can be defined as concerning itself with a teacher s conscious goal setting and proactive stance towards making a change in the classroom (Katie Tricarico, Diane Yendol Hoppey, 2012). • 4. Unit 2 Assignment 1 Cellular Structures and Pathogenicity Cellular Structures and Pathogenicity Jennifer L. Wethington ITT Technical Institute Unit 2 Assignment 1 Bacterial illness is a result of complex interactions between bacteria and the host. During evolution, humans developed many ways to protect themselves against bacterial pathogens. On the other hand, bacteria have developed strategies to evade, subvert or circumvent these defenses (Sousa, 2003) One of the most important characteristics of bacterial pathogenicity is the various strategies developed by prokaryotic organisms to use host molecules for their own benefit (Sousa, 2003). To accomplish this, bacteria have evolved elaborate control mechanisms to turn genes on and off, varying the transcriptional activator or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the initial phase of infection, environmental strains of P. aeruginosa from any aqueous setting are inadvertently inhaled or otherwise delivered to the upper respiratory tract (Feldman, et al., 1998). It is at this stage where the expression of functional flagella is critical, providing chemotaxis toward desirable substrates, such as mucin, and the motility essential for widespread dissemination (Feldman, et al., 1998). In the normal host, the presence of defenses and additional antimicrobial peptides, the affinity of flagella components for mucin glycopeptides, and the process of mucociliary clearance are likely to eradicate such transiently inhaled organisms from the respiratory tract before any epithelial immune response is elicited (Feldman, et al., 1998). While motility is commonplace among the prokaryotes, it is important to note the variety of structures responsible for motility. These structures vary depending not only on the organism in question, but also on the particular environment (Bardy, Ng, Jarrell, 2003). Study of the bacterial flagellum has provided insights into many aspects of prokaryotic cellular activities including genetics and regulation, physiology, environmental sensing, protein secretion and assembly of complex structures (Bardy, Ng, Jarrell, 2003). Continued study of all prokaryotic motility structures will provide knowledge that is likely to reach far beyond the topic of motility and pathogenicity (Bardy, Ng, ... During this experiment a ghost shrimp represented the open circulatory system, while the black worm represented the closed circulatory system. For each organism there resting heart rates were recorded by count the number of pulsations the organism had under a microscope. First, the shrimp and the worm were treated with caffeine, and then their heart rate was recorded after the organisms were exposed to the treatment for three minutes. The organisms were removed from the caffeine, and were given time to return back to their resting heart rates. The shrimp and the worm were then exposed to ethanol, and there hear rates were recorded again. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the shrimp was exposed to the caffeine the heart rate increased by 50.4 beats, and when the shrimp was exposed to the ethanol the heart rate decreased by 34.8 beats. The average increase in heart rate was 11.83 beats, and the average decrease in heart rate was 7.5 beats. From this data we can conclude that caffeine acted as a chemical stimulant and speed up how frequently the heart was pumping blood into the system. Ethanol acted as a chemical sedative and slowed down how many times the heart pumped blood into the system. Even though the two organisms had different circulatory systems, they were still affected in the same manner. Loyalty was an important part of the Anglo Saxons culture. In Beowulf, the Anglo Saxons were expected to remain loyal to their leader as he was responsible for protecting them in battle. The leaders of the Anglo Saxons were admired for their courage and determination as they guided the group of warriors in their endeavors. In The Wife s Lament , the wife remains loyal to her lord even though she is treated harshly by him. She chased after him when he left, and continued to love him after he ostracized her. As evident in Beowulf and The Wife s Lament , the Anglo Saxons greatly relied on a noble leader to protect them from danger and direct them towards success; as a result, the followers were loyal to their lord by showing reverence and admiration as well as honouring their legacy, even if the lord neglected to fulfill his duties. Throughout their journey and various battles, Beowulf and Wiglaf remained loyal to their lords. While in Denmark, Beowulf remains loyal to his king, Higlac, and the other warriors remain loyal to Beowulf. Sexual Objectification in Music Videos and How Adolescents Are Affected Lauren Faron, Aynsley Fishel, Nisha Patel, Menelik Solomon The Ohio State University Music videos are easily accessible to everyone, especially adolescents. From its earliest origins on TV to recent upgrades to technology on the internet, such as YouTube, anyone can watch music videos at any time of the day. Online music video sites draw an average of 150 million people each month who view more than two billion videos per day (Mischner, Schie, Wigboldus, Baaren, Engels, 2013). Sexually objectifying music videos have increased in the last couple of decades. With this, more adolescents are being influenced by viewing these videos and mostly all of them are affected in some way, either positive or negative. What a lot of people do not know is what is happening to adolescents after viewing these types of music videos and how it can lead to concerning effects later in development. Literature Review Adolescence is a crucial time in the lives of young boys and girls, especially when it comes to viewing music videos. • 12. Theme Of Good And Evil In The Picture Of Dorian Gray What is the true meaning of good and evil. Good is that which is morally right and evil is profoundly immoral and malevolent. Good vs evil is a prominent theme used in literature. Two authors Oscar Wilde and Robert Louis Stevenson explore the theme of good vs evil in their novels The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In the novel both main characters Dorian gray and Dr. Jekyll are overthrown by the evil. Also in both novels you can see how influences, interactions, and beauty ultimately take them down the wrong path. In The Picture of Dorian Gray the main character Dorian gray was first an innocent man and role model to artist Basil Howard who represented humanity. Overtime influences, interactions, and beauty got the best of him. In The Picture of Dorian Gray Basil says He has a simple and a beautiful nature. Your aunt was quite right in what she said of him. Don t spoil him. Don t try to influence him. Your influence would be bad this shows how even at the very beginning Basil knew how Lord Henry would influence him in a negative way. As we read on we can see how lord Henry teaches him to only care about beauty which causes Dorian to believe beauty is the only thing that matters in life. Lord Henry was the main cause of the corruption of Dorian s soul. In the novel another quote Lord Henry says is Oh, she is better than good she is beautiful, . This demonstrates how from the very get go he told Dorian that beauty is better than goodness. The poisonous book was another way Dorian was overtaken by the evil. In the novel it says It was a poisonous book. The heavy odor of incense seemed to cling about its pages and to trouble the brain. The mere cadence of the sentences, the subtle monotony of their music, so full as it was of complex refrains and movements elaborately repeated, produced in the mind of the lad, as he passed from chapter to chapter, a form of reverie, a malady of dreaming, that made him unconscious of the falling day and creeping shadows. This quote proves how the evil has already taken over him and now the book is taking over his soul. Periods of encouragement have included the early decades of this century along with the reconstruction era of Post World War II. The 30s, 40s and the recession of the early 80s have been periods during which the national government has discouraged immigration. At times, economic concerns have given way to humanitarian ones such as during the Soviet invasions of Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and during the Vietnamese refugee crisis of the 70s. Generally, however, Canadian immigration targets have reflected the rate of economic expansion and employment. An exception to this rule was during the latter part of the 1980s. Worry over the declining fertility rate and our ageing population led the federal government to raise its annual targets despite high unemployment. Most recently, under economic pressures, the most recent Liberal government once again lowered the immigration level. The Geography of Immigration There have also been attempts at controlling the geography of immigrant settlement. The Federal government stated that one of the primary goals of immigration is to, foster the development of a strong and viable economy and the prosperity of all regions in Canada. It shapes various Western social conventions regarding binary gender identities into an intelligible and recognizable rite of passage. Originally theorized by anthropologist Arnold Van Gennep (date), rites of passage configure social status changes into a visible tripartite process denoted by a starting point of separation, followed by a transitional (or liminal) stage, and concluding with a reinstallation back into society under the new station (CITE). While the process is undertaken by, and therefore has been ostensibly created for, the individual (or initiate), rites of passage are constituted and maintained by the State, which institutionally controls or signifies passage from one phase of the process to another. Each gradation of gender transition beginning with the individual s divorce from their prior status (as a man or woman ), through the mediated liminal state (hormone replacement therapy, real life test, ongoing therapeutic consultation, surgical remedies), and reinstallation (acknowledged through post operative letters and/or altered documents to be given albeit limited passing privilege) is orchestrated, measured and controlled. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the function, structure, synthesis and the use of the protein elastin (ELN), which encodes for one of the two elements of elastic fibers in the human body (NCBI 1). Addressing the fundamental aspects of the protein will allow us to explore the potential applications and implications of the protein if it has been modified. Introduction and Function Elastin is the one of the key components in the elastic property of tissues found in human tissues such as arteries, lungs, and elastic cartilage to name a few (Jacob, Sauvage, Osbourne 1). Elastin is mainly composed of amino acids glycine and proline, which are hydrophobic and are combined with lysine residues in crosslinks (NCBI 1). It plays a fundamental role in the recoil of tissues after being stretched, which is critical in maintaining the cells health (Weiss 1). Thirty percent of the dry weight of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in arteries is comprised of the protein elastin, hence, making it an essential part of human tissue (Krettek, Sukhova, Libby 1). Elastin can be found abundantly in the dermis of the skin, the arterial walls, the pulmonary tissues, which helps with the expansion of the lungs upon breathing and the recoil upon exhaling (Krettek, Sukhova, Libby 1). Since we re told that Marriott in a higher degree uses more short term debt to finance this division, we use only 10 year interest rates, which, according to table B is 8,72%. The restaurant division has a significantly higher spread, which is 1,80%. rD for restaurant division = 8,72% + 1,80% = 10,52%. These are only the fixed part of the cost of debt. For the floating part of the debt we use one year bonds. This means that the floating part of the cost of debt is for the lodging division 6,90% + 1,10% = 8,00%, and for the restaurant division it s 6,90% + 1,80% = 8,70%, due to the different spreads. The lodging division has 50% fixed debt rate and 50 % floating rate, whilst the restaurant division has 25% floating rate and 75% fixed rate. These numbers gives the following calculation for the different costs of debt: Lodging cost of debt: 50% * 8,00% + 50% * 10,05% = 9,025% Restaurant cost of debt: 75% * 8,70% + 25% * 10,52% = 10,065% These different divisions need a different cost of debt because of the fact that assets in the restaurant and contracting services have shorter useful lives. • 27. Proposed Defunding Of Agricultural Classes On The Nation... As of March of 2016, Gov. Bruce Rauner of Illinois has proposed defunding of agricultural classes in his state. Think about this, the governor of a state where one in four jobs in Illinois are directly related to agriculture wants to give a grand total of zero dollars to the Future Farmers of America along with ag classes in general. This is the reason that schools not only should offer agriculture related classes, but in order to graduate from high school every student should at least take one class of ag. At the end of the day all people must know where the nation s food comes from and how it gets from the pasture to the store. There are only two percent of the nation s population that are farmers. Two percent of the people in America raise the crops and the meat for the whole country. This number needs to change in order to ensure that children and the nation s children will be able to survive. Today s kids do not know where their food is from which means they take farmers for granted. One personal story that can be recalled happened just recently. A student pointed to a turkey and asked What is that? A giant rooster? The response was No, that is a turkey, and they come from turkey houses. This is what brought up the thought of just how important ag education is. The ones in the field work very hard to improve the ways of life for the animals and plants they grow so that the people of America can eat. Cult Of The Amateur By Andrew Keen Analysis In his book, Cult of The Amateur, Andrew Keen titles the phenomenon of democratization of the web , where almost anyone in this age now has the opportunity to put whatever they desire on the web, the great seduction . For example, a survey done in the United Kingdom revealed that nearly one third of teenagers aged fourteen and above, had some sort of content online. (White and Wyn 2008) As the amount of content being produced and posted online far outsources the capability of any authority to censor or monitor them, it can accurately be said that genuine cultural experiences, universal truth, and professionalism are disappearing at record speed. POINT 1 Disappearance of Truth It was what Keen called the great seduction where the new web promised to bring more truth and globalization but instead, it brought a truth created by the general consensus of web users (16). Arguments from experiences of the world to the existence of God are called cosmological arguments. This particular argument is the argument from motion. Argument from Motion: P1. If something moves a thing to be F, then it (the mover) is in a state of actuality relevant to F. C1. If something were to move itself to be F (e.g., be both moved and its own mover), then it would be both potentially but not actually F and also in a state of actuality relevant to F (conjunction, modus ponens, P1 3). I will leave it to con to find any objections to this argument; however, I will respond to one preemptive problem that may seemingly arise. The issue comes from a seeming contradiction between Newton s law of inertial motion, or Newton s first law of motion, and the Aristotelian definition of motion on which the argument above rests. The problem may be resolved in two ways. Firstly, to assert that there is a contradiction is to equivocate between two different definitions of the word motion. Newton s account of motion is only concerned with local motion (motion or change in terms of place or location), while the Aristotelian is concerned with change of every sort (quality, quantity, substance, accident, etc.). Secondly, there is no formal contradiction. As the Thomist philosopher Edward Feser says: Suppose that motion is being used in the two principles in the same sense. Even given this assumption, there is no formal contradiction between them. Newton s law tells us that a body will in fact continue its uniform rectilinear motion if it is moving at all, as long as external forces do not prevent this. It does not tell us why it will do so. In particular, it does not tell us one way or the other whether there is a mover of some sort which ensures that an object obeys the First Law, and which is in that sense responsible for its ... • 35. Magical Realism In Wolf Whistle In Lewis Nordan s novel Wolf Whistle, he recounts the true story of Emmett till in a fictional tale. Till was a fourteen year old African American boy who was brutally murdered after whistling at a white woman. He was nearly beaten to death, had his eye gouged out, and was shot in the head, wrapped in barbed wire, then thrown in the river and held down by a cotton gin fan by two white men. These men were later acquitted of their crimes by a jury of their peers. This homicide was a major turning point in the civil rights movements that were sweeping across the nation in the 1950s. He was able to recount the story by referencing real life events and using symbolism and magical realism. Magical realism is a literary genre that combines realistic narrative with supernatural elements of dreams or fantasy. Some great examples of magical realism are: Mrs. Gregg s bizarreness, Alice Conroy Flashback, and Bobo demon eye. Mrs. Gregg had such an extreme stutter that she could not be understood unless she spoke to the tune of Here Comes Santa Claus. In this example, her stutter is a realistic narrative, and Santa Claus had broken her chains and set her free, (page. 17). Many people are for home schooling; similarly, many people are against it. The basis of this debate is one of great importance: our children need an education that prepares them for the world. It is the parents right to decide how best to obtain this goal. Advantages unique to home schooling include its convenience, looser attendance policies, and individualized attention. For parents who wish to have their children home schooled, it is fairly simple to accomplish, granted that one parent is willing to stay at home and be the teacher. In the state of New Jersey, no certification is needed for a parent to begin home schooling (Stephens). Parents teach their children to the best of their ability with the knowledge and skills they themselves already posses. In cases where a parent has previously earned a college degree and is currently out of work or is working from home, it can be beneficial to both the parent and the child. Parents who home school their children argue that their children receive a better and more fulfilling education because of the individualized attention. Today s public schools are becoming too overcrowded and the quality of education is decreasing. Home schooling requires no set curriculum; however, parents must prove equivalent academic instruction to a local superintendent (Stephens). Presidential Elections Dbq Television is an important educational tool in society, however, it does not have a place in presidential elections, due to the inequality and lack of substantive discussion in televised debates, as well as irrelevant physical standards being placed upon presidential candidates. Should the decision of who is in charge of a massive country be made based on physical appearances, such as height, hairstyle and other superficial traits? Using these methods of deduction to decide an elected official is extremely unintelligent and ineffective compared to the alternative, an intelligent interview printed in an article or magazine.
