Chronicle Of A Death Foretold By Garcia Marquez
Magical Realism through Setting in García Márquez s Chronicle of a Death Foretold
Question: How far does setting serve to reinforce or emphasize meanings or themes within Chronicle
of a Death Foretold?
Work Used: Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez
In Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez, the setting plays a potent role in
showing a certain theme. Especially what happens in a certain setting plays a dominant part in
developing a theme. Márquez is best known for his use of magical realism in his novels. He repeatedly
uses strange, surreal details to highlight otherwise ordinary events. Magical realism is an important
theme grown with the setting of the novel. Magical realism is the fantastic or imaginary and often
unsettling images or events that are depicted in a sharply detailed and realistic manner. In other words,
it is the use of unusual or impossible characteristics in a real life setting. Magical realism allows
magical elements to be inserted into a text to make it more interesting and appealing to the reader.
Márquez uses setting to portray those magical elements like foreshadowing, abuse of power, and the
concept of mutual respect through magical realism.
The first example of magical realism is when Santiago foreshadows his death through a dream. At the
beginning of the novel, it says on Pages 3 and 4 that He d dreamed he was going through a grove of
timber trees...and for an instant he was happy in his dream... He was

The Effects Of Dna Technology On The World Of Forensic...
Advances in DNA technology has expanded greatly in the world of forensic science. In the past a vast
number of crime scene evidence was not considered for analysis is now being tested. Trace DNA is
more effective in this century when convicting a criminal than it was 20 30 years ago. Due to the
consist improvement of DNA technology forensic scientist are able to put away criminals the correct
way.
In fact, requests for post conviction DNA analysis have become so prevalent that the federal
government and almost every state have passed laws that govern when and how a convict can request
to revisit a conviction based on new DNA evidence (Post Conviction DNAAnalysis FindLaw). Post
conviction DNA can release an convicted prisoner in two ways: first, the evidence could prove
conclusively that the person convicted did not commit the crime; second, reasonable doubt that
justifies overturning the conviction without conclusively proving innocence (Post Conviction DNA
Analysis FindLaw).
Every state has a standard for post conviction DNA analysis except for Massachusetts and Oklahoma.
The federal government also has a statute that convers DNA testing. The judge uses the standards that
are contained in the laws to determine if the evidence is enough to reopening the case. In New York,
for example, the new evidence must create a probability that had such evidence been received at the
trial the verdict would have been more favorable to the defendant (Post Conviction DNA

Toxic Leadership In Special Forces (SF)
Toxic leadership can develop within Special Forces (SF) because of concern for compromising
command authority and because the personality profile of a toxic leader can be mistaken as type A
personality that thrives in SF.
LTG Ulmer fully discusses the Army s concern of compromising command authority and how that can
foster toxic leaders. SF is susceptible to toxic leadership for this same reason. A sergeant major will
crush a group of teammates who try to solve their toxic leadership issue through collective mutiny.
The military is a top down driven organization and chain of command is more important to maintain
than removal of one toxic leader.
I witnessed this firsthand when a team sergeant, who was toxic, came to my ODA just prior ... Show

My experience with confronting a toxic leader was not successful. Four of us made a deliberate plan
on how to approach the individual and on the specific issues that we needed to raise. In our approach
only one of us addressed our boss privately, and made it known that he spoke for the group. Our boss
seemed to be receptive in the moment and was even appreciative. Unfortunately in the weeks
following the confrontation he made work very difficult on the four of us. I now realize that he
exhibited two classic characteristics of a toxic leader. LTG Ulmer states that toxic leader can be
charming when the occasion fits and that they rarely take blame. Our boss was charming to my
colleague to end the confrontation as quickly as possible. He also refused to accept personal blame for
the issues we presented to

The Gap Between Spoken Speakers And Non Fluent Speakers Of...
Carol Woodard, Guy Haskins, Grace Schaefer, and Linda Smolen address the issue of bridging the gap
between fluent speakers and non fluent speakers of English in classrooms in the United States. The
article explains how an urban school had tested the children in kindergarten and the results of the test
showed a nearly two year lag in oral language development (2004, p.92). The large gap in oral
language development of the less fluent speakers can be detrimental to their education. The school has
to try to bridge the gap quickly in the early years of the student s education; in order to catch the
students up to the developmentally appropriate level of oral language before it s too late. If the school
is unable to bridge the gap the less fluent speakers may be delayed in their reading and writing skills.
The school implemented a talk table to bridge the gap in oral language development (Woodard,
Haskins, Schaefer, Smolen, 2004, p. 92). The research method the school decided to use was
observations of the students progress, surveys, and pretest and posttest. The teacher in charge of each
classroom was responsible for carefully observing and recording the students progress throughout the
program. The teachers utilized their state s curriculum standards as a grading scale of how well the
students were doing and to monitor the progress they were making. Close to fifty teachers participated
in the research project. Teachers had to go through a special course in the Let s

SB-6 Analysis
On July 19, 2011, the Texas Senate passed the bill, Senate Bill 6 or SB 6. It was passed with a nine to
five along party lines that will impact Texas education for the next ten years. ( Texas school board... )
The bill creates a fund for instructional materials in each district under the Educational Materials
Online, or EMAT system. The bill requires each district to state how the IMA is used for educational
purposes that cover the requirements for TEKS, or Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, under the
State board of education (SBOE). Districts of Texas, as of 2011, can now go to outside sources to get
their materials, not approved in the SBOE process, and use the IMA to buy it, get supplemental

Steps have been made to improve the curriculum shown to students, but it is slow moving. In an
article in Slate, the TEA rejected a proposal. The author wrote, But in a close 8 7 vote, the Texas State
Board of Education rejected a proposed amendment that would ve empowered it to create an expert
panel of academics charged with catching the type of embarrassing inaccuracies.. (Moser) However,
some improvements have been made. In the San Antonio Current, the review board overturned the
publishing of the Mexican American Heritage textbook where several racist comments were written,
such as, lazy compared to American industrialists. (Zielinksi) In another San Antonio Current article,
strives were made to correct the science curriculum. The way students learned about cells and their
complexity changed from just evaluating it to comparing it. This allows for more room for future
updates. However, evolution was not named as one in the discussion as it was beforehand. (Simmons)
As in the past, evolution discussion in schools of the state, was controversial to their Christian beliefs
which contradicts the amendment added to SB 6. ( Texas school

Marijuana Prohibition
From the eighteenth century onward in the United States, there has been a temperance movement. In
other words, many people crusaded against what they saw to be the damaging effects of alcohol on
health, personal and professional relationships, and society at large. The temperance movement gained
so much gravity that the production, sale, and consumption of alcohol were actually prohibited from
1920 to 1933. As we all know, prohibition of alcohol was a dismal failure, as a thriving black market
continued to produce what many citizens wanted. Marijuana prohibition on the other hand, was not a
direct cause of public outcry. It was made illegal due to political maneuvering and an attempt to make
amends for the fuck ups of prohibition of alcohol. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For a long time, the anti marijuana community s rallying banner has been marijuana s effect on short
term memory. However, hardly any of the factoids on anti drug websites or pamphlets actually
clarifies WHEN the short term memory loss is occurring. For anyone who has smoked marijuana, they
have felt the effects of not being able to remember a train of thought while under the influence of the
substance. However, does marijuana have long term effects on short term memory? This is much less
clear, and if it doesn t, then the DEA doesn t really have a rock to stand on. What difference does it
make if someone has their short term memory impaired WHILE smoking marijuana? If someone
smokes up and forgets to attend a job interview, it is not the marijuana s problem, but the fact that the
user made a poor judgment call. So what is to be learned from all of this? Is it that since alcohol poses
more health risks than marijuana, that it should once again be banned? Certainly not. I think the lesson
to be learned is that prohibition of a substance that poses few health risks when used in
MODERATION is not right for America. Sure, there are some people who develop alcohol and

Haig s Reputation as the Butcher of the Somme Essay
Haig s Reputation as the Butcher of the Somme
In the run up to the war, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig was appointed the Director of Military
Training. In an effort to create a reserve standard army which could double up as a home front defence
force, plus a fighting unit for use abroad, he managed to achieve this by pushing for legislation that
lead to the creation of the TA (Territory Army) and the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) which were
to be later used in the war effort in the war to end all wars . Haig is most famously renowned for his
involvement in the hundreds of dead soldiers strung out like wreckage in the thickened barbed wire of
the failed attack of the Somme, after a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His apparent lack of emotion leads me to how he may deserve the label of being the butcher of the
Somme . This reveals when he says the nation must be taught to bear losses. This heartless attitude
bears resemblance to the rule of Bloody Mary as Queen of England when she persecuted Protestants
in an attempt to bring England back to the Roman Catholic faith. He is also inferred to be a butcher as
he did not stop the men from going over the top when he saw that his particular plan of action was not
working in its current state
Even though the Somme was a terrible disaster, it served in a positive light to be a learning curve for
the British Battalions/Sections/Corps/and generals. With the benefit of hindsight, it showed the Allies
that their was a serious, inadmissible problem in their ranks because how such a mass scale massacre
of men could happen after such a well planned offensive from high up the ranks to Haig himself is a
clerical atrocity. Firstly, the barbed wire pounding was a good idea in theory however it only served to
in practice make the wire entangle so that it was thick to the point that daylight could barely be seen
through it . But, it could be argued that because Haig suggested the idea after being prompted

Engineering SRKR Engineering College Bhimavaram, India. ABSTRACT This paper proposes a new
real and reactive power coordination controller for a unified power flow controller (UPFC). The basic
control for the UPFC is such that the series converter of the UPFC controls the transmission line near
the micro grid real/reactive power flow and the shunt converter of the UPFC controls the UPFC bus
voltage/shunt reactive power and the DC link capacitor voltage. In steady state, the real power demand
of the series converter is supplied by the shunt converter of the UPFC. To avoid instability/loss of DC
link capacitor voltage during transient conditions, a new real power coordination controller has been
designed. A new PSO based reactive power coordination controller has been designed to limit
excessive voltage excursions during reactive power transfers. Matlab simulation results have been
presented to show the improvement in the performance of the UPFC control with the proposed real
power and reactive

The Conspiracy Theories And Social Issues
The phrase conspiracy theory is often expressed with a negative connotation and used as a label for
the explanation of outlandish incidents that are hard for the everyday person to comprehend.
Conspiracy theorists are often labeled as lunatics that spit out senseless claims with no real substance.
The mere mention of the word conspiracy seems to set off an internal alarm bell that causes scholars
to close their minds in order to avoid cognitive dissonance and possible unpleasantness, since the
popular image of conspiracy both fundamentally challenges the conception most educated,
sophisticated people have about how the world operates... (Bale). What is often unspoken is that
conspiracy theories have a real effect on the political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A 2012 National Election Study found that the conspiracy theory has to ideologically be in line with
what the person already believes. Conservatives aren t going to jump on a conspiracy theory that
makes other conservatives look bad, and liberals aren t going to believe a theory that undermines
liberal causes (Jackson). A similar survey carried out by the New York Times complements the
previous study s results and states that In total, the percentage of Democrats who agreed on average

afterward. By contrast, Republicans willingness to endorse conspiratorial claims declined after the

who agreed on average with the statements from 28 percent to 19 percent. (Nyhan). This coincides

Pleasantville Biblical Refrences Essay
The movie Pleasantville (Produced and directed by Gary Ross in 1988) is more than just your ordinary
film. Pleasantville sends a message within a message. Not only is it a great film, (made popular by
New Line Cinema) it contains numerous biblical references. Some of the biblical references in this
film may be easier to see and understand than others. But when asked to analyze this film and critique
the biblical references you will understand just how many there are.
To me the most obvious relation to the bible is in a scene where the main character David (Tobey
Maguire) is the first to see a fire that breaks out in a tree in his front yard. Ironically enough, the tree is
on fire, but is not consumed by the flames, it s burning but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The serpent eventually persuades Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge . After she eats from it, she
has Adam eat from it. Shortly after, they finally notice they are naked and become self conscious and
cover up. God then asks about what they have done and Eve blames Adam, while Adam blames the
Serpent. God curses them, and makes Eve suffer through labor and banishes both of them from the
Garden of Eden. The relation in the movies comes from a scene in the end involving David and
another girl from his school. Color starts to fill Pleasantville, and the girl he is sitting with in the lawn
gets up and grabs a fruit of off the tree, and then she hands the fruit to David to eat, much like Eve did
with Adam. As soon as they ate the fruit, it started to rain in Pleasantville for the first time ever,
symbolizing God s anger, and color now completely filled Pleasantville. The discovery in books also
reminds me of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil , the books being good, and the reading of
them being evil because it made people curious to as what else was out in the real world. Therefore
there is an effect in both cases, the biblical one, and also the movie.
Pleasantville, (before David and Jennifer) is a dream world if you will, everyone is always happy and
there are never any conflicts with anyone. Once the two of them arrive however, everything changes.
In Pleasantville everything is black and white, but after Jennifer has sex

Essay on Vietnam
Weapons of the Vietnam War
In late 1961, America took physical force in the Vietnam War. War is a complex series of political
events that leads to physical involvement in the form of armed combat. Technology is a major
deciding factor in war, along with the battle tactics used, terrain, experience and professionalism of the
opposing forces. By 1961 both the United States and Vietnam had developed a broad array of guns
and weapons to fight off one another. Coupled with battle tactics this provides a deadly and extremely
hostile environment. In the beginning of the war the weapon of choice for the support troops was the
M1 Carbine. The carbine was half the weight and held a less powerful cartridge than its brother, the
M1 Garand. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The M 16 is infamous for its accuracy on the battlefield especially at longer ranges. Both assault rifles
share the same 5.56mm projectiles, which provides significant stopping power. The M 203 grenade
launcher was a muzzle loaded grenade that fit under the barrel of assault rifles such as the M 16. The
40mm grenade was used to provide additional fire support in a gunfight. The high explosive had a
range of 400m and a blast radius of 5m. Before the M 203, infantry used a weapon called the M 79
grenade launcher. Which largely resembled a sawn off shotgun. The M 79 was designed to take up the
gap between maximum hand grenade distance, and minimum mortar fire distance. It could fire an
array of projectiles which included darts, buck shots, smoke, gas and flares. The M 79 was ideal in
Vietnam terrain. Although the M 16 was very easy to use in the field, some of the U.S. Armies Special
Forces used a gun very similar to the M 16. The XM 177E2 or more commonly the colt commando or
the CAR 15, had telescoping stock for easy handling and could be used more like an SMG instead of
an assault rifle which made the CAR 15 a great choice for combat situations where fighting would be
extremely close. Although it was popular with Special Forces the CAR 15 saw very limited use with
normal battalion units. Infantry used the M 67 recoilless rifle to destroy bunkers. It was a breach
loaded single shot rifle (much like a bazooka and other

How Does Landscape Reflects Society
I believe this statement to be true that landscapes are reflections of the societies that create them. I
have read and analysed many articles which have clearly reflected this and a quote by Pierce Lewis
which I feel is needed to start off my discussion says that landscape is something to be looked at, but
seldom thought about (Lewis, 1979, p.1). This statement made me start to really think about landscape
and how we must look further than what just meets the naked eye. From my readings I have found out
that in order to look at landscape better than we must train our eyes to see things in a different light
and therefore it is vital that we see past the landscape that presents itself to us. Duffy describes
landscape brilliantly by saying that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Temples were developed in the 15th century and were to be later rediscovered by the French in
the 19th century. They are a symbol of Cambodia s glorious past (Winter, 2007, p133) and the temples
also reflect many degrees of heritage as it is used today for celebrations of the Khmer New Year that
last four days and is revered by Khmers as a deeply symbolic icon of national, ethnic and cultural
unity (Winter, 2007, p133). On average the UNESCO figures reveal that 100,000 to 200,000 people
visit the area for the four day celebrations. This shows how landscapes are reflections of the societies
that create them when such large numbers are coming to celebrate this tradition. In the year 1975 on
April 17th a new party came into Phnom Penh declaring the end of 2000 years of Cambodian history
(Winter, 2007, p138) they were called Pol Pot and brought radical changes that killed many
Cambodians as the slaved away building. This party were all about taking control and power of the
landscape which shows again that landscapes are reflections of the societies that create them. The Pol
Pot removed all freedom of travel and therefore Cambodians were not able to visit the Angkor tombs
this a sign of the people being oppressed. After what is only two decades the festivities of today
therefore represent a reclaiming of the site...as a populist symbol of history enabling Cambodians to

Can Oral History Be Trusted
Can Oral History be Trusted ? The 21st Century, a time we live in where nearly everything is

different in the early stage of man up until now. The cave people documented things by writing on

stories or myths have been written by people in their own diaries or in letters so loved ones be trusted?

Some historians do believe that it is a waste of time because it is so unreliable but as this is sometimes
the only way to gather information on the period or on certain things, what does this say about oral
History? Of course however, where oral History has it s disadvantages it has it s advantages. Oral
History can bring about some good information about the time that is being studied. Civil Servants for
example can be a great source of information. This is because if they have been in the civil service, for
example forty years, then they have witnessed change of policies, problems, pressure groups and
ministers who made a difference. They can give us good insight into the time and what change took
and place and why it took place, whether this can be trusted is the question though and it has to be said
that in this case, civil servant records are more reliable than anything else because they are always
going to talk about the problems and how it was fixed rather than pinpointing one thing and making it
out to be amazing or terrible. Even if someone is not from the civil service they can still be helpful,
they can provide information that was not already known and help piece together events 4. An

Retinal Detachment Essay
Retinal detachment (RD) is defined as separation of the neurosensory retina from the underlying
retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). It is a sight threatening condition that can result in complete visual
loss if not diagnosed and managed on early stages. It is estimated that around 36,000 cases of RD
occur annually in the United States. Multiple types of RD exist including, rhegmatogenous, tractional,
and exudative/serous RD with each has its own etiologic factors and pathogenesis (1).
Rhegmatogenous RD, the most common type of RD, occurs when there is a tear in the retina allowing
the fluid from the vitreous cavity to accumulate in the subretinal space resulting in detachment.

Commercial Fishing Is Bad
Commercial Fishing has always been a means of making a lucrative living. So much so, that is one of
the reasons that concerns have risen today. With the increase in the number of commercial fisherman
within the U.S., it requires more fish to be fished from the seas. Over the years, changes in the fish
stock population has become a serious concern. Commercial Fishing is also destroying our sea beds
and marine life that lives on the sea floor of the oceans. Many times, the threats to marine life due to
commercial fishing are not detected until the marine life has suffered a significant decline in numbers.

Oedipus Rex Bliss in Ignorance One of the most memorable and meaningful Socratic quotes applies
well when in context of Sophocles Theban Trilogy. The unexamined life is not worth living, proclaims
Socrates. He could have meant many things by this statement, and in relation to the play, the meaning
is found to be even more complex. Indeed, the situation of Oedipus, king of Thebes, the truth of this
statement is in question. Would Oedipus have been better off if he was blind to the knowledge of his
birthing and the fate that was foretold to someday befall him? Truly though, his life would have been a
far better and easier path had he never known about his true origins. ... Show more content on

needed, and was living a happy and fruitful life. As the drama progresses, he finds out more and more,
learning exactly what the implications of his birth was, he suffers the fate for examining his life. So
what Socrates had meant, that the life which was not rich with self exploration and reflection was not
worth living, was indeed different than its application in terms of Oedipus, who s life was
unexamined, yet complete (214). The question arises, what would life have been like, if Oedipus had
not discovered his true origins? If he had stayed in Corinth, would this have ever happened? We find
that indeed, we would have had no story, if not for that lone comment of a drunkard that sparked the
fire of rebellion in the young prince Oedipus.(Chen) He ventured out to Delphi, to pry knowledge of
his background out of it, and to discover if this was indeed the truth, despite the fact that his adopted
parents of Corinth had assured him of it falseness. Oedipus leaves Corinth, fulfilling the Socratic idea
of the unexamined life. However, we must evaluate the eventual consequences of his actions and the

Trends in the Industry of IT and the Business Cycles Essay
The name information technology was used for the first time in 1958, in an article in Harvard
Business Review and since that time this industry has seen only innovations throughout the history.
Some problems that the industry is facing are the increase competition from the offshore and inshore
players, the slow growth of the hardware sales, the decrease in the IT spending globally etc. But
despite all the problems and challenges that the industry is facing, the opportunities are many. One of
the most important ones is the increased number of the smart device users which is established as a
very profitable segment for the information technology segment.

The slowdown in the IT spending globally
According to information technology industry estimates, global IT spending growth has been 2%
which is smaller than the previous forecast of 4.1% for 2013. The decrease in the IT spending by
enterprises as the cut on capital expenditure is due to economic uncertainties prevailing globally
which could negatively impact the IBM s revenue growth.
Competition from offshore players
The competition from offshore players has been increasing in recently. Offshore IT outsourcers are
selling directly to the end users and in this way they compete directly with the local suppliers of these
services such as IBM. This phenomenon creates a highly competitive industry which makes
companies to continually search for ways to differentiate themselves from their competitors.
SlowGrowth in the hardware segment
One of the main problems is the slow growth in the hardware segment. IBM sales growth has been flat
in the last quarters because the company has been unable to successfully close new multimillion
dollars hardware and software deals in the last year because of the bad economic conditions. The
hardware sales have been declining because different firms prefer moving to cloud services which run
largely on low cost hardware often custom build for cloud architectures. IBMs revenues from servers
and hardware have been decreasing a lot. Even though IBM moved to a new high value area such as

Good equipment is as important to good cooking as good recipes and good technique. Here are four
pieces of cookware every enthusiastic cook should own, with information about how to choose.
Essential Cookware Item # 1: 12 Inch Standard Skillet A standard skillet is a plain metal skillet
(meaning it does not have a nonstick coating). Standard pans brown food better than nonstick pans do.
Standard pans are also more versatile. Unlike nonstick pans, standard pans can be used over high heat
on the stove top, can be used in a hot oven, and can usually be placed under a broiler. How to Choose:
Look for a clad pan, which is pan made of copper covered with a heavy gage steel or anodized
aluminum (anodized aluminum has been treated so it won t react with acidic foods). The handle
should be plain metal (no plastic, silicone or wood) and be attached with study rivets. Clad pans tend

Work Addiction Research Papers
The days of the regular 9 to 5 workday, 40 hour week and relaxing vacations have all but gone by the
wayside. Today, they have more often than not been replaced by workdays with no set timeframe, a
workweek consisting of up to 60 hours or more and vacations that are for the most part nonexistent.
With such extreme changes in modern work habits, things such as relationships, health and lifestyles
suffer. Sadly, this disorder is not new to researchers nor is it as small as a problem as most people
think it is. People that worked harder and longer than needed were considered ideal employees in the
past. Today, companies are implementing mandatory time off as to battle the addiction to work.

Some people may think this type of disorder is mostly exhibited by those with jobs, but it has been
found that even those with no jobs also suffer from such an affliction. According to many researchers
studying today s work epidemic, it has been estimated that the majority of people with this problem
have come from such situations as dysfunctional families and alcoholic parent(s). The cause for this
stems from not being able to control situations that were not controllable. Work addiction is
considered an attempt to control a situation in which they cannot control. Other researchers have
found that the sudden increase of workaholism is stemmed from recent economic pressures. People
think that by working harder and logging longer hours is a viable way of keeping a job in such harsh
economic times. During a recent study by Saul Robinson, a psychotherapist and professor at the
University of North Carolina Charlotte found that there were four different types of workaholics. The
bulimic workaholic is one that thinks that a job must be done PERFECTLY or not done at all. The
relentless workaholic, described as an adrenaline junkie, is one that tends to take on more work than
can possibly be done. The attention deficit workaholic is one that starts a job with a fury but then fails
to finish because of lost interest for another job. The savoring workaholic is one that works very

Oh! What A Day!
The day that Jesus invited Peter, Andrew, James and John to follow Him was perhaps their greatest
day. Now, those men had known Jesus before that day, but not as the Messiah. Andrew had been a
disciple of John the Baptist (John 1) and had heard John announce that the Messiah was already in the
midst of Israel. Two days later, John pointed out Jesus as the Lamb of God. (John 1:36) Andrew and
another disciple [probably John the apostle] left John the Baptist and spent the day with Jesus. When
Andrew learned that Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah, he found his brother, Peter, and brought him
to the Lord. (John1:37 41) Andrew was not one of the more outstanding apostles; however, it was he

Human Torture SHOULD Be Allowed Essay
Torture has long been a controversial issue in the battle against terrorism. Especially, the catastrophic
incident of September 11, 2001 has once again brought the issue into debate, and this time with more
rage than ever before. Even until today, the debate over should we or should we not use torture
interrogation to obtain information from terrorists has never died down. Many questions were brought
up: Does the method go against the law of human rights? Does it help prevent more terrorist attacks?
Should it be made visible by law? It is undeniable that the use of torture interrogation surely brings up
a lot of problems as well as criticism. One of the biggest problems is that if torture is effective at all.
There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the incident, another question was brought forth: Whether it was time the government decided
that desperate times called for desperate measures, and that torture interrogation was in need.
According to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, torture is: Any act by which severe pain
or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as
obtaining from him, or a third person, information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a
third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a
third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is
inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other
person acting in an official capacity. (85) And it is also prohibited. But the truth is, even when being
outlawed, torture is still used silently, especially in the interrogation of terrorists. Did it have any
effect on the long term battle against terrorism of the U.S and the world? According to John McCain,
it is a no. In Torture s Terrible Toll , he wrote about his own experience: I was once physically coerced
to provide my enemies with the names of the members of my flight squadron, information that had
little if any value to my enemies as actionable intelligence. But I did not refuse, or repeat my

Global Warming And Its Effect On Ecosystems By Stimulating...
Abstracts
The uses of microcosm are resourceful in giving insight into the behaviors of larger scale systems.
global warming is increasing at escalating rate and could affect ecosystems. Ecosystems are a very
important part of humanity as they provide us with essential services to survive. It is important to
know the factors that could affect this. The use of microcosm experiments can be used to give
information into how ecological communities will be affected by climate change. In this study
sampled populations of the species Paramecium and Euglena were taken over 5 days at different
temperatures using PCR, Microscopes, Serial dilution and spectrophotometry techniques. The results
gathered form over the 5 days showed that increasing temperature over time has an effect on the
microcosms, negatively and positively. This experiment proved that the increase in temperature
through climate change has an effect on ecosystems by stimulating reproduction, interaction and
competition.
Introduction
Climate change through changes in the environment is rapidly increasing and creating a negative
impact on ecological services provided from biodiversity.
Ecosystems are essential to the sustenance of humanity as they provide us with many useful services
like food, energy, water and recycling. (Benton et al., 2007)
An ecosystem is made up of different types of plant and animal species which interact with each other
and most importantly with their environment as one functional unit. The

10 Things I Hate About You Comparison
The two movies that are similar and have the same type of genre, dealing with relationships are 10
Things I Hate About You and The Taming of the Shrew . These movies are the same, yet so different
from one another. Both plots are about love and relationships, that s why 10 Things I Hate About You
is based on the same concept as The Taming of the Shrew . One of the main differences is the time
period, throughout the year s lot of views on things start to change. The idea of marriage and
relationships are very different from back then to today. For example, in The Taming of the Shrew ,
Petruchio was only marrying Katherine because her father had given him money. This clearly shows
that he wanted nothing to do with her, but since there was money involved he went along with it. In 10

she feels like the only way to make people notice her is to be physically abusive. Another good
example would be their fathers. In Taming of the Shrew , Baptista knew that so many men wanted
Katherine s sister. So, he wanted Katherine to wed but he was basically just trying to get rid of her like
she s an object. On the other hand, in 10 things... Kats father, Walter, has a much very different
mindset. He doesn t necessarily want Kat to have a boyfriend, she just has to have a boyfriend before

Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections
The purpose of this paper is to identify an issue identified by the National Council of State Boards of
Nursing NCLEX examination blueprint. The identified issue that I will be addressing for this paper is
catheter associated urinary tract infections and is under the category of safety and infection control;
according to (INSERT NCSBN CITATION) this issue falls under the overview of safe and effective

Taking a look at the patients that have increased rates tend to be of female gender due to the shortened
urethra which allows the bacteremia to travel at a shorter distance than that of males, some of the other
risk factors for higher catheter associated urinary tract infections include patients that are of older age,
prolonged catheterization and impaired immunity (Conway, Larson 2012). With respect to cultural
values that may affect this situation they are none that I could find correlating with catheter associated
hospital infections. Proposed Solution
Through extensive research into catheter associated urinary tract infections there are many different
approaches to reducing the modifiable risk factors and the incidence of catheter associated urinary
tract infections in the hospital setting that can be used in any unit to reduce the liability of catheter
associated urinary tract infections. According to (Gesmundo, 2016)) the prolonging of the catheter
removal is one of the major reasons for catheter associated urinary tract infections. When adopting the
principles of how to lower the rate the success begins at the time of admission and

moves troops into a disputed zone between the Rio Grande and the Nueces Riverto. Mexico still upset
about Texas, responds by sending troops out and it results in the loss of 12 U.S. soldiers. Polk uses this
and gets Congress to sign off on a war and in the course of two years proceeds to defeat Mexico. It
ends with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed February 1848, which essentially was the
submission of all land north of the Rio Grande to the U.S. The U.S. erased Mexico s debt to them,
which was about 3 million dollars and proceeded to give Mexico 15 million dollars for the land now

Valley. In response, Governor William Lane of New Mexico declared Mesilla Valley as apart of U.S.

valley. U.S. President Franklin Pierce sends James Gadsden to negotiate and resolve the issue. In need
of money to fund an army to fight rebellions in Mexico, Santa Anna agrees to 45,000 square miles for
15 million dollars. The treaty was later ratified by the U.S. Senate to 29,670 square miles for 10

Jigsaw Department s Revenue and Cost Performance in 2013
The increase in sales in the Jigsaw department can be primarily attributed to the market expanding by
almost 50% from 1,000,000 units per annum to 1,488,000 units per annum. Despite this increase,
Larchmont Games Jigsaw department saw an increase in sales of only 11%, leading to a drop in
market share from 20% to 15%. The department s increase in sales (from 200,000 to 223,200)
therefore appears to be more a result of being the correct market at the correct time than any
successfully planning and strategizing by the accounting team. This is also reflected in the
comparatively small increase in total revenue and a decrease in operating income. With better
accounting strategies the Jigsaw department of Larchmont Games could hope to achieve profit and
revenue gains more in line with the industry.
Larchmont Games had mixed results in the area of cost performance. On a per unit basis both
cardboard and paper were acquired at cheaper than budgeted rates but the trade off for this was a large
ending inventory of both products. This resulted in a dramatic increase in total costs incurred for these
direct materials because of the large purchasing quantities. Whether this cost can be somewhat
absorbed in financial year 2013 14 by using leftover product instead of purchasing more was not
stated, however the sprinkler incident suggests that

government. My father suffered persecution for criticizing the regimen and faced allegations of
planning to immigrate to the US to overthrow the Castro s revolution. In 1961 he was sentenced to
prison for many years. The government continually harassed and intimidated my family and limited
resources of education and jobs for the whole family, before and after my father was released from
prison. Their repressive acts also included public acts of shaming and threats. Meetings were held near
our house and angry multitudes of people approached us yelling denigrating words, throwing eggs at
us, and holding sticks threatening us to beat us. We were fortunate, but not many others in my small

LTG Ulmer fully discusses the Army s concern of compromising command authority and how that can foster toxic leaders. SF is susceptible to toxic leadership for this same reason. A sergeant major will crush a group of teammates who try to solve their toxic leadership issue through collective mutiny. • 5. The Gap Between Spoken Speakers And Non Fluent Speakers Of... Carol Woodard, Guy Haskins, Grace Schaefer, and Linda Smolen address the issue of bridging the gap between fluent speakers and non fluent speakers of English in classrooms in the United States. The article explains how an urban school had tested the children in kindergarten and the results of the test showed a nearly two year lag in oral language development (2004, p.92). The large gap in oral language development of the less fluent speakers can be detrimental to their education. The school has to try to bridge the gap quickly in the early years of the student s education; in order to catch the students up to the developmentally appropriate level of oral language before it s too late. If the school is unable to bridge the gap the less fluent speakers may be delayed in their reading and writing skills. The school implemented a talk table to bridge the gap in oral language development (Woodard, Haskins, Schaefer, Smolen, 2004, p. 92). The research method the school decided to use was observations of the students progress, surveys, and pretest and posttest. The teacher in charge of each classroom was responsible for carefully observing and recording the students progress throughout the program. The teachers utilized their state s curriculum standards as a grading scale of how well the students were doing and to monitor the progress they were making. Close to fifty teachers participated in the research project. Teachers had to go through a special course in the Let s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In other words, many people crusaded against what they saw to be the damaging effects of alcohol on health, personal and professional relationships, and society at large. The temperance movement gained so much gravity that the production, sale, and consumption of alcohol were actually prohibited from 1920 to 1933. As we all know, prohibition of alcohol was a dismal failure, as a thriving black market continued to produce what many citizens wanted. Marijuana prohibition on the other hand, was not a direct cause of public outcry. However, does marijuana have long term effects on short term memory? This is much less clear, and if it doesn t, then the DEA doesn t really have a rock to stand on. What difference does it make if someone has their short term memory impaired WHILE smoking marijuana? If someone smokes up and forgets to attend a job interview, it is not the marijuana s problem, but the fact that the user made a poor judgment call. So what is to be learned from all of this? Is it that since alcohol poses more health risks than marijuana, that it should once again be banned? Certainly not. In an effort to create a reserve standard army which could double up as a home front defence force, plus a fighting unit for use abroad, he managed to achieve this by pushing for legislation that lead to the creation of the TA (Territory Army) and the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) which were to be later used in the war effort in the war to end all wars . This reveals when he says the nation must be taught to bear losses. He is also inferred to be a butcher as he did not stop the men from going over the top when he saw that his particular plan of action was not working in its current state Even though the Somme was a terrible disaster, it served in a positive light to be a learning curve for the British Battalions/Sections/Corps/and generals. Mothi Ram M.Tech Asst.Professor Dept of Electrical and Electronics Engineering SRKR Engineering College Bhimavaram, India. ABSTRACT This paper proposes a new real and reactive power coordination controller for a unified power flow controller (UPFC). The basic control for the UPFC is such that the series converter of the UPFC controls the transmission line near the micro grid real/reactive power flow and the shunt converter of the UPFC controls the UPFC bus voltage/shunt reactive power and the DC link capacitor voltage. In steady state, the real power demand of the series converter is supplied by the shunt converter of the UPFC. To avoid instability/loss of DC link capacitor voltage during transient conditions, a new real power coordination controller has been designed. A new PSO based reactive power coordination controller has been designed to limit excessive voltage excursions during reactive power transfers. Matlab simulation results have been presented to show the improvement in the performance of the UPFC control with the proposed real power and reactive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some of the biblical references in this film may be easier to see and understand than others. But when asked to analyze this film and critique the biblical references you will understand just how many there are. To me the most obvious relation to the bible is in a scene where the main character David (Tobey Maguire) is the first to see a fire that breaks out in a tree in his front yard. God curses them, and makes Eve suffer through labor and banishes both of them from the Garden of Eden. The relation in the movies comes from a scene in the end involving David and another girl from his school. War is a complex series of political events that leads to physical involvement in the form of armed combat. The high explosive had a range of 400m and a blast radius of 5m. Before the M 203, infantry used a weapon called the M 79 grenade launcher. Which largely resembled a sawn off shotgun. I have read and analysed many articles which have clearly reflected this and a quote by Pierce Lewis which I feel is needed to start off my discussion says that landscape is something to be looked at, but seldom thought about (Lewis, 1979, p.1). This statement made me start to really think about landscape and how we must look further than what just meets the naked eye. The unexamined life is not worth living, proclaims Socrates. He could have meant many things by this statement, and in relation to the play, the meaning is found to be even more complex. Indeed, the situation of Oedipus, king of Thebes, the truth of this statement is in question. As the drama progresses, he finds out more and more, learning exactly what the implications of his birth was, he suffers the fate for examining his life. So what Socrates had meant, that the life which was not rich with self exploration and reflection was not worth living, was indeed different than its application in terms of Oedipus, who s life was unexamined, yet complete (214). The question arises, what would life have been like, if Oedipus had not discovered his true origins? If he had stayed in Corinth, would this have ever happened? We find that indeed, we would have had no story, if not for that lone comment of a drunkard that sparked the fire of rebellion in the young prince Oedipus.(Chen) He ventured out to Delphi, to pry knowledge of his background out of it, and to discover if this was indeed the truth, despite the fact that his adopted parents of Corinth had assured him of it falseness. Today, they have more often than not been replaced by workdays with no set timeframe, a workweek consisting of up to 60 hours or more and vacations that are for the most part nonexistent. With such extreme changes in modern work habits, things such as relationships, health and lifestyles suffer. Sadly, this disorder is not new to researchers nor is it as small as a problem as most people think it is. According to many researchers studying today s work epidemic, it has been estimated that the majority of people with this problem have come from such situations as dysfunctional families and alcoholic parent(s). The cause for this stems from not being able to control situations that were not controllable. Work addiction is considered an attempt to control a situation in which they cannot control. Other researchers have found that the sudden increase of workaholism is stemmed from recent economic pressures. People think that by working harder and logging longer hours is a viable way of keeping a job in such harsh economic times. During a recent study by Saul Robinson, a psychotherapist and professor at the University of North Carolina Charlotte found that there were four different types of workaholics. The bulimic workaholic is one that thinks that a job must be done PERFECTLY or not done at all. The relentless workaholic, described as an adrenaline junkie, is one that tends to take on more work than can possibly be done. Now, those men had known Jesus before that day, but not as the Messiah. Especially, the catastrophic incident of September 11, 2001 has once again brought the issue into debate, and this time with more rage than ever before. Even until today, the debate over should we or should we not use torture interrogation to obtain information from terrorists has never died down. Many questions were brought up: Does the method go against the law of human rights? Does it help prevent more terrorist attacks? Should it be made visible by law? It is undeniable that the use of torture interrogation surely brings up a lot of problems as well as criticism. One of the biggest problems is that if torture is effective at all. There are ... Jigsaw Department s Revenue And Cost Performance COST ANALYSIS Jasvinder Sidhu Wednesday 5:30pm Evaluations Jigsaw Department s Revenue and Cost Performance in 2013 The increase in sales in the Jigsaw department can be primarily attributed to the market expanding by almost 50% from 1,000,000 units per annum to 1,488,000 units per annum. Despite this increase, Larchmont Games Jigsaw department saw an increase in sales of only 11%, leading to a drop in market share from 20% to 15%. The department s increase in sales (from 200,000 to 223,200) therefore appears to be more a result of being the correct market at the correct time than any successfully planning and strategizing by the accounting team. This is also reflected in the comparatively small increase in total revenue and a decrease in operating income. With better accounting strategies the Jigsaw department of Larchmont Games could hope to achieve profit and revenue gains more in line with the industry. Larchmont Games had mixed results in the area of cost performance. On a per unit basis both cardboard and paper were acquired at cheaper than budgeted rates but the trade off for this was a large ending inventory of both products. This resulted in a dramatic increase in total costs incurred for these direct materials because of the large purchasing quantities.
