Colic In Horses Essay
Colic in horses is a wide branching term that simply refers to any abdominal pain in horses. It is the
number one medical cause of death in horses and has a wide variety of causes. There are a very wide
variety of gastrointestinal conditions that can cause pain in the abdominal region and for a horse to
colic. About 10 % of horses colic at some point during their lives. One of the biggest problems with
colic is identifying early on if it is going to be life threatening or if it is a mild form. It is very difficult
to distinguish between the two. Colic has a wide array of signs and symptoms but the causes are not as
well known, so it is important to know preventative measures one can do in order to avoid colic in
their horse as well as have an understanding of the horses delicate digestive system. Horses were
evolved to constantly be grazing on grass throughout the day. Today our horses are typically kept in
stalls or paddock areas and fed two to three times a day. While this is more economically efficient and

The first part where colic is predisposed is in the small intestine, the majority of the small intestine
hangs from a membrane called the mesentery. This membrane is attached to one point in the middle of
the abdomen, this can be visualized by the picture below. Excessive tension in the mesentery causes
abdominal pain and colic.
Another site that is predisposed to colic is the junction of the small and large intestine. This junction is
where the food passes from the foregut to the hindgut and food can easily impact at this joint. Another
part where colic can start is in the large intestine. The large intestine is only connected at two points, at
the beginning where it connects to the small intestine and at the end where it joins the small colon and
leads to the anus. Where the large intestine connects to the small colon is a very narrow and can easily

US Involvement In World War II
World War II was our last major war that had so many countries fighting each other just because one
man wanted to create what he believe was a superior race and had killed millions to try to achieve his
goal. This war had lasted six long years had cost millions of lives before this war was over. There was

had invaded Poland and within a week of the invasion six other countries had join the war. After
Germany had invaded Poland the U.S. had declared its neutrality and had also created a patrol around

Comparing My Poetry And Alfred Lord Tennyson
What makes a poet great? What is it that makes their poetry weather the ravenous jaws of critics and
stand the test of time? I ask myself this as I look at my own poetry, wondering if it too could withstand
the harsh beatings many a poet s work has been through. I wonder if I could measure up to one of the
greats, which is why I have chosen to compare and contrast my works and style of poetry with that of
the famous Alfred Lord Tennyson. I would like to show how our styles, themes, and poetic influences
differ from while showing a few similar traits they have. To start off I will compare Tennyson s poem
Tears, Idle Tears to my poem Monday Morning, Sunday Mourning. The main themes of both poems
are about reminiscing about events that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These sentences often don t follow any specific meter, if they do it is most likely by accident. The
rhyme is more often than not end rhyme. I write the poems to tell a story, but I don t want it to be
completely free verse which is where the end rhyme comes in. I don t usually have any concrete
rhyme scheme so that way I can reach a more diverse range of content without having to worry about
not having words to rhyme. Tennyson s however was very gifted at understanding rhyme and meter,
which allowed him to use many different styles when writing his poems. In some poems Tennyson
would use a simple style while in others he would employ a more complex style to increase the depth
of the poem. Furthermore, Tennyson s time period influenced his poetry heavily as well. During this
time there were a lot of scientific advancements were occurring. Theses advancements however
clashed with some religious beliefs. Tennyson s poetry allowed him to navigate the rift that had been
created between scientific advancement and religion. Tennyson was also influenced by the other major
events of the time, which allowed his poems to be relevant all the while they could still be applicable
for years to come. It was these influences that allowed Tennyson to craft his most famous works such
as Ulysses, The Charge of the Light Brigade, In Memoriam A.H.H., The Lady of Shallot, and many
more,. Tennyson was also heavily influenced by

Gilded six bits Essay
The Gilded Six Bits Response
1. The story is written as a single continuous narrative, but the events take place over a long period of
time. Estimate how much time actually passes between the beginning of the story and end.
I would say that the story had to take place probably between nine to ten months. I arrived at this
conclusion from information given in the story. Such as I drew from the fact that after being caught
with Otis D. Slemmons, Missie May and Joe had not touched in three months, then six months later
the baby boy had arrived. So in conclusion I basically just added those months together to estimate
how much time actually passed between the beginning of the story and end.

5. Compare the written voices of Joe and the candy shop clerk near the end of the story. How does the
clerk s dialect differ? Why do you think Hurston chose to introduce this different voice into the story
at the end?
The dialect differs between the two at the end of the story showing that Joe s is more of broken up
while the clerk s dialect is a little more advanced than his. I think Hurston chose to introduce this
different voice into the story at the end to show the noticeable pronunciation barrier between the two.
6. Throughout the story. Joe gives coins to Missie May. What is the significance of the silver dollars at
the beginning of the story? Contrast this with Joe s meaning when he leaves Missie May the gilded
coin on the table. How has the significance of the silver dollars changed at the end of the story?
The significance of the silver dollars at the beginning of the story show a way that the two love birds
Missie May and Joe play together. Joe s meaning when he leaves Missie May the gilded coin on the
table is to show her what Otis gave to her was not real at all it was a fraud just like him, unlike the real
sliver dollars he tossed at her every Saturday evening. However in the end of the story the significance
of the silver dollars changed to show the couple s love which was much more valuable than gold.

Dao De Jing And Daoist Philosophy
Imitating a particular action, thing, or other person first entails perception and observing. Imitation of
nature to live in harmony is the basis of Daoist philosophy, which begins with observation. Having
ideals and a path stems from understanding how to perceive and achieve the ideal through the path.
The process of realization begins with chapters from the Dao De Jing, practicing Aikido with intent,
and the connection with our environment. A major part that I observed in the Dao De Jing is the
realization that Dao is significant to a harmonious life. Focusing on Dao and the passages of the Dao
De Jing tie together what Daoist philosophers believe. All these things combined, brings about the
principles of Daoist philosophy.
Before parallels can be drawn between ideals and paths in Daoism, Daoist philosophy and Dao must
be defined. It is hard to put Daoist Philosophy into a nice, neat sentence because of the complexity and
vast amount of information on the subject. For the intent of this paper, Daoist philosophy is defined as
a Chinese philosophy that takes a more naturalist approach to religion and way of living. It is the
connection between imitating nature and harmony. Dao is defined in Chapter 1 as the constant moving
everything that surrounds us. It is not tangible, it is just what it is, and you do not know exactly what
this something is.
Living in Harmony with everything surrounding oneself requires a realization of what is around and
how to properly interact with one s surroundings. One must join an ideal and a path to achieving that
ideal. Without a path, can the desired goal have the outcome that is intended? A reading from the Dao
De Jing suggest no, that the path and ideal are connected and one. But first, one must learn how to
perceive nature. Perceiving nature is necessary to be able to imitate it correctly. Observation of what
surrounds us and how we interact with our environment. Chapter 36 of the Dao De Jing talks about the
idea of perceiving and understanding one s insight. Whatever is gathered in must first be stretched out;
whatever is weakened must first be made strong; whatever is abandoned must first be joined; whatever
is taken away must first be given. This translates to if you

University of Saskatchewan Trends and Patterns in Asian North American Representation in
Hollywood I saw the highly promoted movie adaptation of The Hunger Games in spring of 2012, and
I left the theatre wondering one thing: where were all the Asians? This is not an uncommon
occurrence: as a second generation Japanese Canadian, I have grown up surrounded by American and
Canadian media that lacks representation of Asians to the point that seeing an Asian on my television

Stereotypes like these are often utilized in representation. All types of media movies, television shows,
advertising, and the like use representations to express reality (Viruega, 2011, p. 3). To paraphrase
Benshoff Griffin and Taylor Willis, representation is a the process of combining signs to present an
image of complex abstract concepts to communicate a story. In other words, representation is involved
in the communication and the determination of meaning and interpretation. Media uses representation
and becomes an extremely influential element of the creation, acceptance, and perpetuation of
stereotypes around Asians (as well as all other ethnic groups). According to cognitive transactional
model of media priming repeated exposure to media stereotypes makes the stereotypes highly
automatic, requiring little cognitive effort (Zhang, 2010, p. 22), and this influences media consumers
judgments and actions in interactions with Asians (Zhang, 2010). Because American media is
extremely prevalent in Canada, as a consequence of globalization, cognitive transactional model of
media priming dictates that the reinforcement of racial stereotypes and views through representation
has become very similar

Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address In The Film
Towards the end of the film after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, one of the last scenes feature
an excerpt of his second inaugural address as he spoke in front of the people who looked up to him.
Some historians believed that Lincoln s second inaugural address is his greatest speech delivered to
the people of the United States. Lincoln mentioned the word God multiple times in his address since
Christianity, in general, is one of the most important aspects that greatly influenced and shaped the
country throughout America s long history.
One of the examples from Abraham Lincoln s second inaugural address that incorporated religion and
mentioned in the film is when he stated God s will in relation to the American Civil War. Lincoln

Short Essay On Amelia Earhart
The Lockheed air ship carrying American pilot Amelia Earhart and guide Frederick Noonan is
reported missing on July 2, 1937. Earhart s round the world flight was cut short when her Lockheed
Electra disappeared over the Pacific Ocean.
She was born in Atchison, Kansas 1897. One year her and her family went on a Christmas vacation to
visit her sister in Toronto, 1917. During this vacation, a pilot flew his plane near her. That Christmas
vacation would have the biggest impact the rest of her life. She started flying at the age of 24 and later
known as one of the most punctual female pilots. In 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh flew solo nonstop
across the Atlantic Ocean. A year later, in 1928, the publisher of Lindbergh s autobiography, George P.
Putnam, also Earhart s soon to be husband, invited Earhart to become the first woman to fly across the
Atlantic Ocean.
Departing from Miami first, on June 1, 1937, Earhart and Fred, the navigator, set out on her journey
around the world. This trip would be 29,000 miles long heading east. As Earhart was approaching
Howland Island, she sent out a message to the U.S. Drift Guard that she was lost and running low on
fuel. To get fuel she would need to stop and land on Howland Island, which is only 1.5 miles long and
a half mile wide. Landing on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One theory from a school scholar thinks that Earhart was a secret agent working for a close friend,

trying to spy on Japanese occupied islands in the Pacific, or Earhart and Noonan landed on one of the
islands by the Japanese and was captured and held as prisoners. But another theory of her
disappearance is she landed safely and came back to America, changed her name and started a new
life because she could not handle the fame

Art and Empathy
Kenny Smith
April 20th, 2003
The role of men in society has been a vital. Men were subjected to the same inhumane and horrifying
events that happened during the Holocaust. When one thinks of a man, you think of father, solider and
other manly things. A great deal of pride comes along with being and man. Along with pride,
testosterone, intensity, and all sorts of other factors key into the characteristics of men. However, the
Holocaust completely stripped men of most of these characteristics. The Holocaust did not allow men
to be men. Holocaust art, the Tale of the Sprinter by Sudeep Pagedar, and Vladek Spiegelman in the
memoirs Maus by Art Spiegelman are examples of how men suffered during the Holocaust and the
amount of empathy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was one of the many nightmarish images of brutality in the book. The human body is stripped of
everything that makes it recognizably human, reduced to bones and fat. Even dead, the captive Jews
are not allowed the smallest dignity. In addition, Vladek shares stories about how they were treated
like animals. We lay on top of the other, like matches, like herrings. I pushed to a corner not to get
crushed ... High up I saw a few hooks to chain up maybe the animals (Spiegelman 75). Considered
racially inferior, the Jews were treated like animals. This is one of many scenes in the memoir where
Jews are held in structures or cars that were initially built for animals. Vladek has a very complex
personality because of his Holocaust experiences. Vladek Spiegelman is a disturbed, bitter old man
who is unwilling to talk about the things that made him the way he is. Through Vladek Spiegelman,
we are able to see how atrocity affected men during the Holocaust. Vladek s character traits evoke
empathy because he cannot be the man and father that he could have been because of this event. Art is
a way to express emotions and feelings. Holocaust art and literature are products of atrocities. Men in
literature and art are usually expressed as very bold figure. When you see a sculpture of a man, it is
usually a masculine figure with bold features. The Holocaust stripped men of their masculinity

United States and DPRK have maintained a tense and unstable relationship due to opposing

policy of strategic patience and limited the amount of spending. The Obama Administration was given
little chance in forging peace with North Korea because the North Koreans consistently defied

The Increasing Threat from Mercury in Our Aquatic Environment
Mercury contamination in aquatic environments is becoming an increasing threat to both wildlife and
humans (Peterson S. A., 2007). Organisms in the aquatic environment, particularly fish,
bioaccumulate methylmercury from contaminated water and food, but predominately from food
(Peterson S. A., 2007). Mercury in the atmosphere exists in three inorganic forms: gaseous elemental
mercury (GEM: Hg0), oxidized mercury typically called reactive gaseous mercury (RGM: Hg2+), and
particulate mercury (Hgp) (Hyun Deok Choi, 2008). Once emitted, mercury can be transformed from
one species to another via photoreduction, reactions with halides, and other oxidation/reduction
reactions (Hyun Deok Choi, 2008). Methylmercury is the bioavailable form of mercury, with well
documented adverse effects (Rimmer, 2010). Methylated mercury is known to cause adverse effects to
wildlife and aquatic organisms. Methylmercury can have neurotoxic, immunotoxic, and
developmental effects on fish, birds, and mammals; top consumers may be at elevated risk (Weir,
2010). Methylmercury is synthesized from inorganic mercury (Hg II) by aquatic bacteria at
oxic/anoxic boundaries such as sediment water interface of lakes and rivers (Hurley JP, 1995). The
degree to which an aquatic system is impacted by methylmercury contamination is a function of a
number of factors, including the rate of supply of atmospherically derived Hg (II), the net rate of
mercury methylation by aquatic, the efficiency of transport and

The Guide Of The Perplexed
Summary of The Guide of the Perplexed
Maimonides is a twelfth century, Jewish philosopher, and author of The Guide of the Perplexed. In the
essay, Maimonides explains how educated individuals with knowledge of the divine science are to
understand God s secrets. He states that the secrets are explained through parables and riddles. Those
who explain the secrets cannot fully describe them so they must use obscure language. Educated men
in Maimonides essay have knowledge manifested to them through God by lightning flashes that are
dictated by how willing the men are to allow themselves have a more internal understanding of the
knowledge presented to them.
Maimonides treatise is meant to clarify the meanings of the prophecies used in the books of prophecy
for those men who have studied philosophy and religion. Equivocal terms are open to one or more
meanings while univocal means when a word only has one meaning. Derivative terms are words that
are derived from another or root word of the same meaning. Lastly, amphibolous terms are words that
are either univocal or equivocal. (5) While the treatise is meant to explain those terms, in no way is it
supposed to be an explanation for the books of prophecy for the scripturally uneducated or vulgar .
Maimonides states that while the men who have studied scripture and God are perplexed as they try to
understand the above mentioned terms, it is their decision to either allow or deny themselves to be
drawn to try to understand both

Teen Parenting Essay
Why Teen Parenting should be delayed?
Raising a child isn t an easy thing to do. Raising a child while the parents are still in their teens is even
harder. Dealing with the day to day chores that involves a baby and trying to work and get an
education is very stressful on any teen.
Teen Parenting should be delayed because it is very difficult to handle, some can t handle it. One of
my friends is a teen mom, and she wouldn t wish a teen pregnancy on any teen. Trying to work, go to

Often the mom will realize he isn t the best person in the world to be a dad, so she doesn t push the
issue. Child support is a problem, since most young dads, like the mom, are still in school or not
making very much at work. There are some great teen dads out there but unfortunately, they are few
and far between.
If the mom decides to stay with her parents, she deals with relationship issues on this front too. All to
often grandparents want to take over. How can they not? It s extremely hard to step back and let your
teen parent another child while you know they re so young, especially if the parenting styles they have
aren t what the grandparents practiced on their own children. Babysitting, parenting styles, doubting
the ability of the teen. All these can truly affect a teen mom in a negative way.
Finishing school and working to support a baby is also a big problem. In today s world, a college
degree is almost a must for any good paying job. A high school education is even more important. If a
teen mom still has to go to school and work, she has very little time to be a mother. The worst part of
it all, is that usually, that s what a teen mom really wants to be. Most teen moms don t want to be part
of the statistics. They don t want to be looked down on. They do want to take care of their child, or
children, in hopes that they grow up to be strong people. They also want to show the world that they
can be a good parent. It s just too bad that society

The Nativity Story And The Gospel Of Matthew
The film The Nativity Story shares many similarities with the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was
writing for the Jews, so his Gospel focuses primarily on Jesus being the messiah because he fulfills the
prophecies. His Gospel also focuses on the paternal side of Jesus s birth, since Joseph being from the
line of David connects Jesus to the Old Testament Covenant with David. In the film, Joseph s
perception of the events at had is often portrayed. Showing the story through his eyes. We also get
insight into is his thoughts on occasions, which furthers the films parallels to the Gospel of Matthew.
Within Matthew s Gospel, there are five key details used to connect the birth of Jesus to the Old
Testament prophecies, all of which appear in the film.
First, the film begins and ends with the massacre of innocents, the first key detail. This slaughter of
innocents was ordered by Herod as a way of preserving his throne. He was worried that the king of
kings was coming to end him, and he wanted to ensure that his throne was safe. He is the second
detail. This slaughter of innocents is what caused Joseph to take Mary and Jesus and flee to Egypt, the
third key detail. Just like in the Bible, God spoke to Joseph in a dream, telling him to take his family
and flee to Egypt, only returning when he was instructed. Had Joseph not done this, Jesus may not
have survived to save us from our sins. Next in the film comes the wise men, the fourth detail. These
wisemen come from the east, showing the

Compare And Contrast Country And Rap Music
As many people know, country and rap music are the most renowned genres of music in today s
world. Both genres are opposites of each other, but they both are on the edges of mainstream. Country
and rap music may stand alone and share binary oppositions such as lifestyles, however rap culture
has influenced country music in today s world which can be seen through the lyrics. In the book
Religion in Hip Hop , Anthony B. Pinn and Monica R. Miller states, Now a global and transnational
phenomenon US based hip hop culture has become a vital component of political, religious,
educational, economic progress, relevance, and recognition. Hip hop is becoming the most vital
cultural forces to be known in the world. Many country artists and other artists are starting to focus
more on having hip hop in their music such as Florida Georgia Line. Hip hop has made its way up to
the top of music and has let listeners realize the culture of Hip hop and how rappers have been raised
up in life. Anthony points out, Over the past two decades, those who have taken up hip hop culture for
its intellectual weight and contributions to the cultural life and self understanding of the United States
have come from a variety of methodological disciples (Anthony Pinn). Hip hop has explored and
changed the cultural out looks on today s ideas. Even though Hip hop has become known for seeing
the cultural side of the ideas in their songs, country music has become a native art form. In Country

The instability, created by a decade of internal conflict in Afghanistan, allowed for outsider groups,
such as the Soviet Union and later the Taliban, to seize power there. Even before the Soviet Invasion,
Afghanistan was burdened with political instability, which stemmed from a lack of leadership at the
presidential level and a power struggle between America and the USSR for access to the Afghan elites.
This period of instability began under President Mohammed Daoud, who himself took power through
a military coup against the previous leader, when he attempted to shift Afghanistan away from Soviet
influence and towards America and the West. Daoud s political maneuvering was faced with severe
criticism from his main political opponents: the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
overthrew the Soviet puppet government in Afghanistan through covert actions, such as funding rebel
groups and supplying weapons, rather than direct military involvement; these same weapons were
later used in the Afghan civil war after the Soviet withdrawal, which was an unintended consequence
of American aid. In his State of the Union address in January of 1980, Jimmy Carter, the U.S.
president at the time, proclaimed, Let our position be absolutely clear: An attempt by any outside force
to gain control of the Persian Gulf region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the
United States of America, and such an assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including
military force. This segment of the speech is known as the Carter Doctrine and shows how America
became more open to involvement against the Russians to protect their national interests, which was a
large shift away from detente, normalizing of relations, from the previous decade. Instead of
deploying their own troops, America unleashed propaganda campaigns, funded, and sometimes even
trained the Mujahideen groups fighting the USSR troops. These covert actions allowed America to
fight the Soviet Union, while having plausible deniability in the international community. Initially,
Reagan s only goal in Afghanistan was to deal a crushing blow to the USSR, as he did not believe that
the Mujahideen could defeat the powerful Red Army. Reagan used Pakistan as an intermediary for

within the UK that outline the current legislation and guidelines to help with safeguarding children

forefront of decisions; the best option in relation to the child s welfare will be taken into account when

If any one of these targets were not being met, today, some agencies could potentially review a child s
safety under this current legislation. A second part of this new legislation was the encouragement of
multi agencies to work together this idea came as a direct consequence of the failings in relation to
Victoria Climbie. With this, a database accessible by all authorities involved with children and young
people was set up so that records can be maintained effectively and information can be shared easily.
Finally, based on the initiative of agencies working together to support children and young people,
Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCB s) were created within LEA s. In my setting, each
planning sheet that teachers use has the five points from ECM written on it, as a constant reminder to
include each child in the lesson and differentiate accordingly in order to reach all abilities. The five
points of ECM are also on display boards/walls in most classrooms. In class, we were put into groups
and had to present an act to the rest of the class and state how it works in school today. Me and Anne
presented the childrens act 1989 which is shown on the next page. Following that is the other groups

Theorist, Theories And Theorizing
Handbooks, by their very nature, serve to define a field of study, to map out, at least for a time and for
at least some scholars, the analytic parameters, key figures, perspectives, concerns associated with the

Speech On Single Mom
Shes a single mom so what?
Last week I walked inside a medical office for an interview and listened as a nurse said to a women,
Oh so you re a single mom . The way she said it you could tell she wasn t asking she was more like oh
so your one of those. I never understand the why people minds go afar when speaking about single
mothers. This women goes on to ask did the father just up and leave when he found out she was
pregnant. Looking in the face of that single mother face you can tell she was young and also a little
uncomfortable. I started thinking there are more than one way she could have be considered a single
mother. This women boyfriend/ husband could be deceased, she could have chosen to me a single
mother, or she is going through a divorce either way saying she s a single mom is not a bad thing.
A few minutes after the women walked away the same who called my name to come in the back. I
walked and I listened as she talked about her husband and kids then asked me if I had any. I answered
her with a simple yes and wanted to drop it. Instead I was asked about my kid and id I was married
while making small talk waiting for two other people. She looks at my ring on my hand and went on
to say how she doesn t understand single mothers and why they would want that life for their kids. I
then start giving her my two cents in the matter, I told her how more than 57% of families are single
mother homes. If this women was like my aunt her husband died in Iraq before her two son s where
even born. Out of that 57% of women only 10% get pregnant knowing they will be single mothers.
She looked at me like I had said something wrong but to me I was saying everything right.
Then I spoke on how that 10% of women have kids because they know they will be great at being a
parent with or without a partner. From what I read in my classes most women over the age of 30 get
pregnant to be single mothers, there are even support groups to help them. That make this chose and
they look at all the options they have. They can t adopt a kids a single woman trying to adopt a kid
look s bad on paper. So they take the option to have the baby by themselves paying up to 100 thousand
dollars to even conceive a baby. She looked at me when

Ever since I entered high school I have been interested in working for a federal law enforcement
agency. I have been to Washington DC for a Nation Youth Leadership Forum on National Security,
and have had the chance to meet many people from different agencies. Being able to talk to these
people about their jobs only increased my interest in this field of work. When thinking about what I
want to do in the future I would like to work as a special agent. Almost every federal agency has
careers that would allow me to do such work. The FBI, DEA and ATF are just a few of the agencies

order for the ATF to measure their performance they developed a performance index to measure the
ten core functions that the ATF has. Those core functions include: Illegal firearms trafficking; firearms
criminal possession and use; firearms industry operations; criminal groups and gangs; explosives,

looking at the submission for the fiscal year 2014 they have included a summary of program changes,

The World Of The Maori Essay
Maori Women
The Maori people sailed to the islands of New Zealand from other Polynesian Islands such as the
Cook Islands, Tonga, and Samoa, arriving from about 1250 to 1300 CE. There the Maori organized
into tribes, called iwi, and developed a warrior culture because of the lack of resources on the islands.
Yet Maori culture inside the tribes became based around the community precisely from the lack of
resources as well. The collective mindset means, as described by Annie Mikaere, who is a modern
Maori woman and activist, that in a tribe, each individual has specific roles to fill in order for the
society to function properly. Embracing an overall egalitarian lifestyle, Maori women were allowed to
play a greater role in society and help to shape it.
Women in Mythology
The mythological world of the Maori begins with a woman figure, Papatuanuku, who is a combination
of the name for the land, not the islands of New Zealand which are called Aotearoa by the Maori,
instead resembling the figure of Mother Earth from a western point of view and she is also a figure in
early mythology that holds the role of creator and ancestress of all Maori who is worshipped as a
goddess. The fusion of the land and the goddess is attributed to the Maori belief that they were formed
from the land and that the earth is the giver of all life (Royal). Paptuanuku is said to have given birth
to and nurture all of the life on earth and connects the land to femininity making women the basis for

Modern Song Essay
What if there was a modern day remake of To Kill A Mockingbird? There could be many difficult
things to decide for this new movie, but something I think is the hardest, is picking the soundtrack.
Today, music is not very meaningful and can be all over the place. It can be very difficult to pick
music for a movie and most of the time, directors make artist make a whole new song for the movie.
Well, I believe the songs Fool on the Hill by the Beatles, Wind Beneath My Feet by Bette Midler, and
Live Like We re Dying by Kris Allen are three songs that are sure to do the job for this movie.
Hopefully, they fit right in!

this can fit in towards the end while they figure out Jem is okay, and they are sitting on the porch.
Although the original movie was quite saddening in that part, if the movie was more happy spirited in
that part, this song would fit like a glove onto a hand. It could quietly and slowly play and as Scout
begins to walk Boo back, it would get louder and it would be the main highlight. Just imagine this: as
the song goes to the chorus, it flashes to next day while Jem, Scout, and Dill are playing in the yard.

The Car Is Miles Away
The nearest supermarket to my apartment is miles away. I have not dragged myself to it in a long time
because it is so inconvenient to get to when, like me, you have no car. Usually my family gets its
groceries from a little corner store a half mile s walk away, a store on the bus route from my brother s
school, or my mother takes the senior bus to the big supermarket. She is too young for it, but they let
her ride anyway; the senior bus drivers understand how difficult it is to get to the store if you cannot
drive. The supermarket is virtually inaccessible to those without cars. Its huge parking lot invites
drivers to come, though it does have a bus stop as well; the stop is located at the back door. For a long

would have passed the checkout aisles. Instead, I turned left through the drugstore section of the
supermarket.
At the edge of the drugstore are racks of small stuffed animals and other cheap gifts. The drugstore
area itself is laid out in orderly rows. The shelves are lower than in the main part of the store; my
guess is that they were created to ease the look out for shoplifters. Ads featuring smiling, multiracial,
families adorn the ends of the aisles. Each of which contains a carefully ordered section of items that
go together; each of these sections is then arranged by brand. This creates uniform blocks of brand
names and logos; the toothbrush section is, at first glance, a display of Colgate and Oral logos. The
drugstore has a wood, or fake wood, floor in contrast to the shiny, white industrial tile that floors the
rest of the store. The shelves are wood look alikes. The store seems to have made an effort to create a
more natural looking environment for the drugstore, or health and beauty, section. This natural tone is
meant to convey a feeling of health, freshness, and cleanliness.

Affirmative Action Programs Should Be Legal
On March 6, 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued Executive Order 10925, introducing the phrase
affirmative action. A few years later, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued Executive Order 11246,
which prohibited discrimination based on race, color and religion. Although there were no specific
policies that require colleges and universities to use affirmative action programs, they voluntarily gave
advantages to minorities and women in the admission process. Affirmative action programs were first
challenged in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978), in which the Supreme Court
ruled that racial quotas are unconstitutional and violated the 14th Amendment. However, schools
could still use race as a factor in the admission process as long as it is not the only factor. As a result,
colleges have adjusted their affirmative action programs to fit the guidelines outlined by the Court.
Today, affirmative action is still a highly controversial issue. In modern day America, the majority of
Americans support affirmative action, but there are still those who do not. Affirmative action benefits
minorities by moving jobs towards minorities, but the shift is relatively small. Affirmative action also
provides minorities with higher acceptance rates to colleges and universities. On the other hand,
opponents of affirmative action often cite mismatch theory as one of their main reasons of opposition,
but minorities who attend high tier colleges actually benefit from the the

Contrast between Sam and Hally s Father in Athol Fugard s Master Harold . . . and the Boys
Any white man is a master of all black men ; the black society is primitive these are some of the ideas
that have been nursed to Hally in South Africa s apartheid society. The question is: are those bigoted
stereotypes true? Of course they are false! In the play Master
Harold and the Boys, Sam is a black man, and Hally s father is a white man. However, Sam s
superiority over Hally s father is obvious through the contrast between their relationships with Hally.

Moreover, Sam coaches Hally to maturity by encouraging him to do his homework, to excel in exams,
and by engaging in educational conversations with him. I recall the beautiful dance metaphor that Sam
creates and the debate that he has with Hally over influential men in history. In addition, Hally finds
Sam reliable. Even as a young boy, Hally resorts to Sam for help in carrying his unconscious, drunk
father away from the bar s floor and cleaning him from the mess he made in his pants. However, when
Hally s frustration is beyond his ability to control himself, his background compels him to play the
race card against Sam, who could also react in a surprising manner. When Hally tells the racist joke on
niggers arses, Sam responds by lowering his pants and revealing his own arse.
On the contrary, the relationship between Hally and his father is ambivalent. Obviously Hally isn t
close to his father because he wants him to remain in the hospital as much as possible. Hally is also
ashamed of his father and disgusted. Hally hates his father for being a helpless cripple, an addict, and
for being dependant on the family for money. He also notices that his father prefers to read comics
whereas Sam values books such as Julius Caesar. Nevertheless, these obstacles can t seem to
undermine Hally s genuine feeling for his dad.

The Importance Of Sea Temperature Anomalies
The oceans play an important role in the climate system owing to the interannual and longer timescale
variability in sea surface temperature (SST). Hasselmann (1976) proposed that this climate variability
could be represented by a stochastic first order auto regressive process
(AR1 process) and should be considered as the null hypothesis for extra tropical sea surface
temperature anomalies (SSTA). According to this concept, SSTAs quickly responds to the atmospheric
heat fluxes at short time period and the heat capacity of the ocean integrates the
SSTA variability on a longer time period. Frankignoul and Hasselmann (1977) have further suggested
that the atmospheric forcing for SST anomalies follows a spectrum of white noise with constant ...

Thus the broad structure of the SSTA spectrum is determined by the depth of the ocean ML and
atmospheric process.
Attempts to include additional processes, such as Ekman transport, entrainment of sub mixed layer
thermal anomalies (Dommenget and Latif 2002; Deser et al. 2003; Lee et al. 2008), state dependent
noise (Sura et al. 2005) and the re emergence associated with seasonal change in MLD (Schneider and
Cornuelle 2005) has shown to increase the SSTA variance at annual and longer timescales. However,
studies have demonstrated that the SST variability at some part of the oceans cannot be represented by
a simple AR1 process (Hall and Manabe
1997; Dommenget and Latif 2002, 2008). The inconsistency arises from the exchange of heat energy
in the mixed layer and sub mixed layer in the ocean.
The strong seasonal cycle of the MLD can strengthen the persistence of SSTA from one winter to the
following. The timescale in which the subsurface temperature anomalies entrain to the surface (nearly
1 year) is expected to influence the spectral variance of SSTA. Möller et al. (2008) have shown a peak
in the annual time period in the power spectrum of midlatitude
SSTA that is associated with the re emergence. Figure 5.3 illustrates the power spectrum of
SSTA and 90% significance level (shaded), presented in different ways (taken from Moller et al.
(2008)). Figure 5.3a express the spectral variance density, while figure 5.3b

material values than actually loving a person for who they are. However, what Holden fails to see is
that everyone must grow up sooner or later. One cannot run or isolate themselves from society, and the
only solution is to adapt to society. There will always be phonies and conceited show offs in life.
Nevertheless, the best alternative measure Holden can take, is to not let it affect him in any way, shape

Importance of Grammar Essay
A. Introduction
It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching.
Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made.
Batstone (1994) states that language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the
indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010)
makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to
ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is to
help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its own

B. Evaluation of Miss Wong s Teaching Approach
B(1). Teaching philosophy
It is teachers beliefs rather than their knowledge that have a greater influence on their instruction
(William Burden, 2000). Meighan suggests seven kinks of teachers beliefs about learners: resisters,
receptacles, raw materials, clients, partners, individual explorers and democratic explorers. Unlike the
first three concepts which focus on teachers, the last four require learners active involvement (as cited
in William Burden, 2000). In Miss Wong s teaching approach, a PPP model (i.e., Presentation, Practice
and Production) is generally adopted. She firstly presents target grammatical structure of passive
voice. Then students do some exercises along with teacher s answer checking. However, it seems the
final production step is omitted, resulting in students lacking opportunities to apply the knowledge
into other contexts. From her instruction, we can see Miss Wong tends to regard her students as
receptacles that are required to absorb the items she transmits. What the instruction concerns is
whether students can transform sentences from active to passive or vice verse from a structural level,
which is a typical example of a

Modern and Contemporary Arts of Africa
Essay
Word count:
African art and the politics of identity in the twenty first century.
Identity is never an a priori, nor a finished product; it is only ever the problematic process of access to
an image of totality H. Bhahba (1994:50)
Introduction.
The second half of the twentieth century saw the liberation of the African continent from colonial rule,
a time that occasioned the rise of new pride in and new searches for definitions of identities released
from the colonial confines. In the twentieth century the politics of identity became salient in
discourses, political, social, and cultural, on Africa. The idea of the diaspora was central to new
conceptions on African art, often leading to the exclusion of artist residing in Africa in preference of
those living in the nomadic condition. The forefront of Africa in modernity was thus not seen as
residing in Africa itself but in those that found themselves in the realms of the hegemonic modernity
of the West. Nevertheless independence from colonial rule saw a surge in self defining nationalisms
based on an ideal form of African nation and identity. Ways of being and producing African art were

Understanding Temperament In Infants And Amy Hunter
The article Understanding Temperament in Infants and Toddlers is written by Lindsy T Allard and
Amy Hunter and through this article the author has tried to help early childhood caregivers and
parents to develop an understanding of temperament, so that they can better understand the individual
differences of the children and can support their holistic development.
Summary of the Article Temperament describes the way a child approaches, reacts and relate to the
world around them. It helps us identify the strengths of the child and the supports they need to succeed
in their relationships and the environments. Researchers categorized the children, who tend to be
happy, regular in their routines and don t get easily upset, as easy ... Show more content on

As an educator when I am very much informed about the temperament it would help me create and
design developmentally appropriate learning environments and practices as developmentally
appropriate learning environments and practices give children optimal time and space in which to
learn new skills and build on existing competencies. In developmentally appropriate early care
children s needs are dealt with quickly. Children are talked with and listened to respectfully. (Jean
Barbre, 2013, p. 44) e.g. using familiar objects, like a stuffed animal to ease anxiety during transitions
such as morning drop off. With the understanding of temperament, I as an educator would not be

Playing Board Game Research Paper
My passion is playing board games and games of strategy. Sometimes, I am trying to conquer the
world and play against everyone. Other times I am trying to save the world with everyone else in a
cooperative game. Playing board games started with my family, and I have played ever since. I was in
the chess club in elementary school. That started my love for strategies and thinking ahead. I was
challenged, and even stayed after school for it; I am thankful that I was a part of the club. Also, I
would bring in games to play on fun Fridays in elementary school. I loved everything, from Hungry
Hungry Hippos to Racko.
I have always loved playing board games especially with my twin sister. I can work with her to play a
cooperative game, not against ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They give the engineer the ability to try things that they could not in the real world. It shows failure
and multiple ways to see everything play out. A systems engineer needs to know how all the different
parts work together and individually. These games run simulations of real world events, and users can
strategize in them as I would do in reality.
Every day I plan and strategize my day just like in board games. I use the skills that are used in the
games in daily tasks and short and long term goals. I do not use the skills learned in Risk to conquer
the world, but I do use those skills to plan ahead and know what my best moves and actions are. (The
game also teaches that some battles are better not fought!) In games, I am sometimes faced with
building up my army, or attacking others. In real life, I have to know when to build up my knowledge
and study, or attack my conscience and just watch a movie.
In another game, Forbidden Desert, I am sometimes a water carrier. I am the only one that can give
my team essential water. Throughout the game I try to give other people water, as that is my job, but I
also try to be an individual and contribute to the work for the common goal. In my Emerging Leaders
class, I also learned that this is a part of servant

  • 4. Comparing My Poetry And Alfred Lord Tennyson What makes a poet great? What is it that makes their poetry weather the ravenous jaws of critics and stand the test of time? I ask myself this as I look at my own poetry, wondering if it too could withstand the harsh beatings many a poet s work has been through. I wonder if I could measure up to one of the greats, which is why I have chosen to compare and contrast my works and style of poetry with that of the famous Alfred Lord Tennyson. I would like to show how our styles, themes, and poetic influences differ from while showing a few similar traits they have. To start off I will compare Tennyson s poem Tears, Idle Tears to my poem Monday Morning, Sunday Mourning. The main themes of both poems are about reminiscing about events that ... I don t usually have any concrete rhyme scheme so that way I can reach a more diverse range of content without having to worry about not having words to rhyme. Tennyson s however was very gifted at understanding rhyme and meter, which allowed him to use many different styles when writing his poems. In some poems Tennyson would use a simple style while in others he would employ a more complex style to increase the depth of the poem. Furthermore, Tennyson s time period influenced his poetry heavily as well. During this time there were a lot of scientific advancements were occurring. Theses advancements however clashed with some religious beliefs. Tennyson s poetry allowed him to navigate the rift that had been created between scientific advancement and religion. Tennyson was also influenced by the other major events of the time, which allowed his poems to be relevant all the while they could still be applicable for years to come. Estimate how much time actually passes between the beginning of the story and end. I would say that the story had to take place probably between nine to ten months. I arrived at this conclusion from information given in the story. Such as I drew from the fact that after being caught with Otis D. • 7. Dao De Jing And Daoist Philosophy Imitating a particular action, thing, or other person first entails perception and observing. Imitation of nature to live in harmony is the basis of Daoist philosophy, which begins with observation. Having ideals and a path stems from understanding how to perceive and achieve the ideal through the path. The process of realization begins with chapters from the Dao De Jing, practicing Aikido with intent, and the connection with our environment. A major part that I observed in the Dao De Jing is the realization that Dao is significant to a harmonious life. Focusing on Dao and the passages of the Dao De Jing tie together what Daoist philosophers believe. All these things combined, brings about the principles of Daoist philosophy. Before parallels can be drawn between ideals and paths in Daoism, Daoist philosophy and Dao must be defined. It is hard to put Daoist Philosophy into a nice, neat sentence because of the complexity and vast amount of information on the subject. For the intent of this paper, Daoist philosophy is defined as a Chinese philosophy that takes a more naturalist approach to religion and way of living. It is the connection between imitating nature and harmony. Dao is defined in Chapter 1 as the constant moving everything that surrounds us. It is not tangible, it is just what it is, and you do not know exactly what this something is. Living in Harmony with everything surrounding oneself requires a realization of what is around and how to properly interact with one s surroundings. One must join an ideal and a path to achieving that ideal. Without a path, can the desired goal have the outcome that is intended? A reading from the Dao De Jing suggest no, that the path and ideal are connected and one. But first, one must learn how to perceive nature. Perceiving nature is necessary to be able to imitate it correctly. Observation of what surrounds us and how we interact with our environment. Chapter 36 of the Dao De Jing talks about the idea of perceiving and understanding one s insight. Whatever is gathered in must first be stretched out; whatever is weakened must first be made strong; whatever is abandoned must first be joined; whatever is taken away must first be given. In other words, representation is involved in the communication and the determination of meaning and interpretation. Media uses representation and becomes an extremely influential element of the creation, acceptance, and perpetuation of stereotypes around Asians (as well as all other ethnic groups). According to cognitive transactional model of media priming repeated exposure to media stereotypes makes the stereotypes highly automatic, requiring little cognitive effort (Zhang, 2010, p. 22), and this influences media consumers judgments and actions in interactions with Asians (Zhang, 2010). Earhart s round the world flight was cut short when her Lockheed Electra disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. She was born in Atchison, Kansas 1897. Departing from Miami first, on June 1, 1937, Earhart and Fred, the navigator, set out on her journey around the world. This trip would be 29,000 miles long heading east. • 13. The Increasing Threat from Mercury in Our Aquatic Environment Mercury contamination in aquatic environments is becoming an increasing threat to both wildlife and humans (Peterson S. A., 2007). Organisms in the aquatic environment, particularly fish, bioaccumulate methylmercury from contaminated water and food, but predominately from food (Peterson S. A., 2007). Mercury in the atmosphere exists in three inorganic forms: gaseous elemental mercury (GEM: Hg0), oxidized mercury typically called reactive gaseous mercury (RGM: Hg2+), and particulate mercury (Hgp) (Hyun Deok Choi, 2008). Once emitted, mercury can be transformed from one species to another via photoreduction, reactions with halides, and other oxidation/reduction reactions (Hyun Deok Choi, 2008). Methylmercury is the bioavailable form of mercury, with well documented adverse effects (Rimmer, 2010). Methylated mercury is known to cause adverse effects to wildlife and aquatic organisms. Methylmercury can have neurotoxic, immunotoxic, and developmental effects on fish, birds, and mammals; top consumers may be at elevated risk (Weir, 2010). Methylmercury is synthesized from inorganic mercury (Hg II) by aquatic bacteria at oxic/anoxic boundaries such as sediment water interface of lakes and rivers (Hurley JP, 1995). • 22. Speech On Single Mom Shes a single mom so what? Last week I walked inside a medical office for an interview and listened as a nurse said to a women, Oh so you re a single mom . The way she said it you could tell she wasn t asking she was more like oh so your one of those. I never understand the why people minds go afar when speaking about single mothers. This women goes on to ask did the father just up and leave when he found out she was pregnant. Looking in the face of that single mother face you can tell she was young and also a little uncomfortable. I started thinking there are more than one way she could have be considered a single mother. This women boyfriend/ husband could be deceased, she could have chosen to me a single mother, or she is going through a divorce either way saying she s a single mom is not a bad thing. A few minutes after the women walked away the same who called my name to come in the back. I walked and I listened as she talked about her husband and kids then asked me if I had any. I answered her with a simple yes and wanted to drop it. Instead I was asked about my kid and id I was married while making small talk waiting for two other people. She looks at my ring on my hand and went on to say how she doesn t understand single mothers and why they would want that life for their kids. I then start giving her my two cents in the matter, I told her how more than 57% of families are single mother homes. If this women was like my aunt her husband died in Iraq before her two son s where even born. Out of that 57% of women only 10% get pregnant knowing they will be single mothers. She looked at me like I had said something wrong but to me I was saying everything right. Then I spoke on how that 10% of women have kids because they know they will be great at being a parent with or without a partner. From what I read in my classes most women over the age of 30 get pregnant to be single mothers, there are even support groups to help them. That make this chose and they look at all the options they have. They can t adopt a kids a single woman trying to adopt a kid look s bad on paper. So they take the option to have the baby by themselves paying up to 100 thousand dollars to even conceive a baby. She looked at me when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Being able to talk to these people about their jobs only increased my interest in this field of work. When thinking about what I want to do in the future I would like to work as a special agent. • 24. The World Of The Maori Essay Maori Women The Maori people sailed to the islands of New Zealand from other Polynesian Islands such as the Cook Islands, Tonga, and Samoa, arriving from about 1250 to 1300 CE. There the Maori organized into tribes, called iwi, and developed a warrior culture because of the lack of resources on the islands. Yet Maori culture inside the tribes became based around the community precisely from the lack of resources as well. The collective mindset means, as described by Annie Mikaere, who is a modern Maori woman and activist, that in a tribe, each individual has specific roles to fill in order for the society to function properly. Embracing an overall egalitarian lifestyle, Maori women were allowed to play a greater role in society and help to shape it. Women in Mythology The mythological world of the Maori begins with a woman figure, Papatuanuku, who is a combination of the name for the land, not the islands of New Zealand which are called Aotearoa by the Maori, instead resembling the figure of Mother Earth from a western point of view and she is also a figure in early mythology that holds the role of creator and ancestress of all Maori who is worshipped as a goddess. The fusion of the land and the goddess is attributed to the Maori belief that they were formed from the land and that the earth is the giver of all life (Royal). Paptuanuku is said to have given birth to and nurture all of the life on earth and connects the land to femininity making women the basis for society in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It can be very difficult to pick music for a movie and most of the time, directors make artist make a whole new song for the movie. Although the original movie was quite saddening in that part, if the movie was more happy spirited in that part, this song would fit like a glove onto a hand. It could quietly and slowly play and as Scout begins to walk Boo back, it would get louder and it would be the main highlight. Just imagine this: as the song goes to the chorus, it flashes to next day while Jem, Scout, and Dill are playing in the yard. Instead, I turned left through the drugstore section of the supermarket. At the edge of the drugstore are racks of small stuffed animals and other cheap gifts. The drugstore area itself is laid out in orderly rows. The shelves are lower than in the main part of the store; my guess is that they were created to ease the look out for shoplifters. Ads featuring smiling, multiracial, families adorn the ends of the aisles. • 27. Affirmative Action Programs Should Be Legal On March 6, 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued Executive Order 10925, introducing the phrase affirmative action. A few years later, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued Executive Order 11246, which prohibited discrimination based on race, color and religion. Although there were no specific policies that require colleges and universities to use affirmative action programs, they voluntarily gave advantages to minorities and women in the admission process. Affirmative action programs were first challenged in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978), in which the Supreme Court ruled that racial quotas are unconstitutional and violated the 14th Amendment. However, schools could still use race as a factor in the admission process as long as it is not the only factor. As a result, colleges have adjusted their affirmative action programs to fit the guidelines outlined by the Court. Today, affirmative action is still a highly controversial issue. In modern day America, the majority of Americans support affirmative action, but there are still those who do not. Affirmative action benefits minorities by moving jobs towards minorities, but the shift is relatively small. Affirmative action also provides minorities with higher acceptance rates to colleges and universities. On the other hand, opponents of affirmative action often cite mismatch theory as one of their main reasons of opposition, but minorities who attend high tier colleges actually benefit from the the ... Even as a young boy, Hally resorts to Sam for help in carrying his unconscious, drunk father away from the bar s floor and cleaning him from the mess he made in his pants. • 29. The Importance Of Sea Temperature Anomalies The oceans play an important role in the climate system owing to the interannual and longer timescale variability in sea surface temperature (SST). Hasselmann (1976) proposed that this climate variability could be represented by a stochastic first order auto regressive process (AR1 process) and should be considered as the null hypothesis for extra tropical sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA). According to this concept, SSTAs quickly responds to the atmospheric heat fluxes at short time period and the heat capacity of the ocean integrates the SSTA variability on a longer time period. Frankignoul and Hasselmann (1977) have further suggested that the atmospheric forcing for SST anomalies follows a spectrum of white noise with constant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus the broad structure of the SSTA spectrum is determined by the depth of the ocean ML and atmospheric process. Attempts to include additional processes, such as Ekman transport, entrainment of sub mixed layer thermal anomalies (Dommenget and Latif 2002; Deser et al. 2003; Lee et al. 2008), state dependent noise (Sura et al. 2005) and the re emergence associated with seasonal change in MLD (Schneider and Cornuelle 2005) has shown to increase the SSTA variance at annual and longer timescales. However, studies have demonstrated that the SST variability at some part of the oceans cannot be represented by a simple AR1 process (Hall and Manabe 1997; Dommenget and Latif 2002, 2008). The inconsistency arises from the exchange of heat energy in the mixed layer and sub mixed layer in the ocean. The strong seasonal cycle of the MLD can strengthen the persistence of SSTA from one winter to the following. The timescale in which the subsurface temperature anomalies entrain to the surface (nearly 1 year) is expected to influence the spectral variance of SSTA. Möller et al. (2008) have shown a peak in the annual time period in the power spectrum of midlatitude SSTA that is associated with the re emergence. Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made. Batstone (1994) states that language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to ensure the solidness of it. Meighan suggests seven kinks of teachers beliefs about learners: resisters, receptacles, raw materials, clients, partners, individual explorers and democratic explorers. Unlike the first three concepts which focus on teachers, the last four require learners active involvement (as cited in William Burden, 2000). In Miss Wong s teaching approach, a PPP model (i.e., Presentation, Practice and Production) is generally adopted. She firstly presents target grammatical structure of passive voice. Then students do some exercises along with teacher s answer checking. However, it seems the final production step is omitted, resulting in students lacking opportunities to apply the knowledge into other contexts. From her instruction, we can see Miss Wong tends to regard her students as receptacles that are required to absorb the items she transmits. What the instruction concerns is whether students can transform sentences from active to passive or vice verse from a structural level, which is a typical example of a ... Identity is never an a priori, nor a finished product; it is only ever the problematic process of access to an image of totality H. Bhahba (1994:50) Introduction. The second half of the twentieth century saw the liberation of the African continent from colonial rule, a time that occasioned the rise of new pride in and new searches for definitions of identities released from the colonial confines. In the twentieth century the politics of identity became salient in discourses, political, social, and cultural, on Africa. The idea of the diaspora was central to new conceptions on African art, often leading to the exclusion of artist residing in Africa in preference of those living in the nomadic condition. The forefront of Africa in modernity was thus not seen as residing in Africa itself but in those that found themselves in the realms of the hegemonic modernity of the West. Nevertheless independence from colonial rule saw a surge in self defining nationalisms based on an ideal form of African nation and identity. Ways of being and producing African art were prescribed to artists, though this does not mean that individual agency was lost. As Atkinson states on post Apartheid South Africa: it is clear that the stakes have shifted, and the country s reintegration into international art , culture, and politics, has ...
