A Brief History of Courtship and Dating in America
A Brief History of Courtship and Dating in America, Part 1 [pic]by The Rev d Skip Burzumato [pic]
Whenever possible, I love to use the word courtship in everyday conversation with young and old
alike.
It s one of those words with which most people are familiar, but have vastly differing opinions of what
it means. For many, courtship is an old fashioned word. It summons visions of men wooing women
with small tokens of affection and asking their hand in marriage on bended knee. For social scientists,
studies of courtship usually look at the process of mate selection. (Social scientists, among whom I
number myself from time to time, will never be accused of being romantics.)
For the purpose of this article the preparation for and proposal ... Show more content on

They knew what was normal. Prior to the 20th century, normal was determined within families and
local communities, but now a higher authority, with wide spread circulation and readership, began to
form a national consciousness.
Thirdly, we see a change in sexual norms in the West. With the onset of the sexual revolution the
question arose, Why would a man court and woo a woman when he could gain a chief benefit of
marriage, namely sexual gratification, for free with no commitment? (Friendship with benefits is a
contemporary example.)
Closely related to this is the invention of birth control. There is too much that could be said here, so I
ll be brief. Simply put, with the onset of the widespread use of chemical and other means of birth
control, the language of procreation of having children was separated from the language of marriage.
As U. of Chicago ethicist Leon Kass argues in his chapter on courtship in Building a Healthy Culture:
Strategies for an American Renaissance, under the old system of courtship, marriage and bringing a
child into the world were inextricably linked. But no longer. With the ever decreasing risk of
pregnancy, having sex and being married were no longer tied together.
Fourthly, we find a change in the models and metaphors used to describe the home and family. Prior

Sherlock Holmes Anti Hero Essay
The age of the anti hero is upon us. Historically, the stories are only told about heroes Captain
America, Superman, etc. but the anti hero has been gaining more traction, more light, in popular
culture and social media. Anti heroes have begun to grace the screens of primetime television or
earning their own series on Netflix. When looking into anti heroes plenty come to mind: Daredevil,
Walter White, Lestat to name a few. But what if a famous literature character who came back due to
popular demand the kind who saves the day as an anti hero? This character is Sherlock Holmes.
Steven Moffat brought the famous detective back from the dead for a modern twist. Sherlock became

This is the addiction and vice of Sherlock Holmes in the modern era knowledge. And, despite these
crippling, underlying and nearly destructive traits, Sherlock does show promising, good qualities. He
cares for Mrs. Hudson, Lestrade, and John Watson and these relationships keep him tethered to
humanity, to the world he s alienated from by his addiction. However, the redemptive qualities offer
no salvation for Sherlock Holmes. He sees only his harmful, anti hero qualities, rebuking any praise he
receives. Don t make people into heroes, John. Heroes don t exist, and if they did I wouldn t be one of
them (The Great Game). Sherlock is eternally locked in limbo, damnation, recognizing himself as
playing on the side of angels but denied a place amongst their ranks Don t think for a second that I am

guarantee even the worst of sinners a place even heaven, sees himself for what he truly is; not an angel

The Prospect Of Human Cloning
The prospect of human cloning was introduced in February 1997 when an embryologist was able to
produce a lamb through the process of cloning. Once the lamb was cloned, the question of whether
research for human cloning came into being. Society and researchers have feuded over whether human
cloning should be banned or allowed for research and reproduction purposes. Each side has reasonable
ideologies to continue their stance towards the opposing argument. Pro cloners believe that the
research developed from human cloning will benefit society, while those who oppose it believe there
are numerous risks in allowing the research. A decision will be reached when both sides compromise
and reach an agreement. In the novel Scientific and Medical Aspects of Human Reproductive Cloning,
written by a committee of scientist and engineers, state that society will be the overall decision maker
for human cloning (2003, p. xi). Many individuals in society currently do not approve of the human
cloning research process. Some are concerned that the cloned child would have issues with its self
identity. and some believe that cloning a human is overall morally wrong. The prospect of social
identity problems arises from what Nestor Morales, a Professor of Psychology at New York, cites that
cloned children, knowing that they have been a planned to be a copy from another problem, ... , may
diminish their sense on uniqueness (Morales, 2009, p. 44). Objectors state there can be a potential

Horus Research Paper
Horus, an Ancient Egyptian god, is one of the most important gods in Ancient Egypt. There are many
different forms of Horus. Each of these different forms are treated as a different god. There is a very
popular story about Horus, which I will focus on in this essay. It described Horus as a son of Osiris
and Isis. According to ancient.eu, Osiris was worshiped the most, and as he is one of the oldest gods in
Ancient Egypt. He was considered to be the god of afterlife. Everyone respected and admired him.
This is because in Ancient Egypt, the afterlife was considered to be more important than real life. The
ancient Egyptians respected the dead, and even referred to them as being the living ones. Isis was a
daughter of Nut and Geb. She was considered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was mostly thought of as the god of protection. According to Nanno Marinatos, author of Gods,
Heroes, And Monsters a source book of greek, roman, and near eatern myths in translation, Horus was
considered to be the role model for all rulers of the Kingdom of Egypt. It was believed that Horus
would guide the pharaohs and help them. Horus was also considered to be the god of the sun and sky.
His name and appearance proved this. Horus eyes were symbols for the sun and moon. His right eye
was the sun, and his left eye was the moon. Horus eyes became the moon and the sun when Set and
Horus had endlessly battled for the control over Egypt. They fought many times until the other gods
finally stopped them. They decided since Set had killed Osiris for the throne and Horus has killed no
one for the throne, that Horus will take the throne since it is his birth right. When Horus won the
battle, he became Horus the Elder. In the fight between Set and Horus, Set lost his testicle. Set was the
god of fertility. This is why the Egyptian desert cannot grow crops. Horus lost his left eye in the battle.
It became the moon, since it was very weak when compared to the sun, which was his right eye.
According to Marinatos, Haru is another pronunciation of Horus used in Egyptian. It means Falcon ,
and, He who is above, over something . Horus was a man who had a falcon s head. The Eye of Horus
was an Ancient Egyptian symbol of

Biometric And Identification Of Biometric Identification
Biometric methodologies emerged into existence in 1858 by use of recording hand images for
identification purposes. From 1858 to 1896 studies progressed in the identification of individuals by
hand geometry, a person s measurements, and fingerprints. From the year 1936 to 1985 biometric
studies proceeded for iris pattern, face recognition, acoustic speech, written signature, and hand
identification. Patents for hand and iris identification became a reality 1985 to 1986 and in 1988 the
first semi automated facial recognition system was deployed. By 1991 face recognition is automated
with the ability of detecting faces in real time. By the mid to late 1990 s biometric methodologies
evolves and is integrated into technology allowing the practice of fingerprint, palm systems, and iris
identification to become more reliable with increased automation capabilities. Studies therefore
increased and biometric technology became even more advanced in the early 2000 s up until today s
time.
There are now about 14 different types of biometric technologies that exist today. These biometric
technologies are DNA, Iris, Retina, face, fingerprint, finger geometry, hand geometry, odor, typing,
vein, voice, and gait recognition which are all techniques of identifying and authenticating individuals
that would provide a more reliable and efficient way of verifying a person identification also
preventing access to unauthorized personnel. Biometric technologies today are becoming less

Ideas Of Success In The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Perspectives of Success Everybody s views and ideas of success are different. Some think of money as
success. Others think of dreams as success. Few people may even think love is success. Ideas of
success can be influenced by one s values. Gatsby Daisy have very different views on success. Gatsby
is head over heals for Daisy. Daisy is his epic, romantic love. Meeting daisy for the first time, he had
already knew that she was his future. His heart beat faster and faster as Daisy s white face came up to
his own. He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her
perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God. So he waited, listening for a

If throwing city wide parties, buying a fancy house, and planning a fake tea visit will get her closer to
him, so be it. Having her again means the world to him. Thats his only goal, his only idea of success.
He wouldn t be fully content without her. Daisy on the other hand, is a little bit different. Her idea of
success is stability and security to where she can be pleasantly happy. She indeed does love and miss
Gatsby, but she also is with Tom and has a security built love for him. Daisy loves the feeling of
security and wealth. That is her idea of success for herself. When she meets Gatsby again, she feels
like he can protect her, he s fun, she loves him and she misses him, so she thinks she can possibly be
with Gatsby but the thought of telling Tom scares her. When Gatsby and Tom meet, the truth starts to
fall out, over conflict. Daisy sees Gatsby freak out which isn t a good addition with the fact that he has
secrets and he might not have been the guy she thought he was. Daisy will always love Gatsby, but she
needs that security feeling, and now Gatsby isn t so stable for her with all of his secrets and tantrums.

Rhetorical Analysis On The Perils Of Indifference
He was finally free, but there was no joy in his heart. He thought there never would be again . This
quote stated by Elie Wiesel from his speech, The Perils of Indifference , refers to the day Elie Wiesel
got liberated from the Holocaust when he was young. The Holocaust was just one of the many horrific
tragedies that occurred during that century. In hopes of changing the future for the better, Wiesel
decides to deliver a speech about helping the victims of injustice. He gives this speech intended for the
President, Mrs. Clinton, members of Congress, Ambassador Holbrooke, Excellencies, and friends
hoping that they will make positive changes for the future. By using rhetorical strategies such as
anaphora, rhetorical questions, and ethos, Wiesel tries to help the victims of injustice and prevent
future tragedies from happening. Throughout Wiesel s speech, he used a copious amount of anaphora.
Wiesel used this technique to help get his point across to the audience. He explains how easy it is to
use indifference; consequently, people are taking opportunities from others. Wiesel explains, our work,
our dreams, our hopes (Wiesel 1 2), to show the audience what indifference is effecting in their lives.
By repeating the word our before each subject that is being affected, he is showing the audience that
the victims being affected have their own opportunity for work, dreams, and hopes. By others being
indifferent, the victims may not have those opportunities anymore.

Character Analysis Of Daniel KeyesFlowers For Algernon
Humans are human; all people change in one way or the other over the course of certain events. Some
of the changes people experience may cause them to have a sad outlook on certain matters, others may
cause people to have a positive outlook on a matter. Just like all other humans, Charlie, from Daniel
Keyes Flowers For Algernon changes over some time too. His life drastically changes after he gets
surgery to alter his intelligence level. In Daniel Keyes Flowers For Algernon, Charlie becomes a
different person over the course of events. His most significant changes include his mentality towards
certain people and his attitude, and also the sudden regression of his mental health after his surgery.
First off, one of the main changes Charlie faces is his ability to think about other people that he uses to
think where his friends. Friends are one of the defining factors of what a certain person will turn out to
be like, or how they feel about certain matters. Poor friends will give second rate influences and will
most likely ruin a person s life, but good friends will make a person feel happy and support this
person. Charlie is faced with not so great friends in Flowers For Algernon. According to his progress
reports, many of Charlie s friends bully him. Charlie does not know this at certain times during the
book, but the reader does. His friends make fun of him and make him do stupid things. In Progress
Report 8, on March 25, Joe Carp said hey look where Charlie had his operashun what did they do
Charlie put some brains in. Charlie does not realize it, but Joe Carp is actually making fun of him to
an unacceptable level where sensitive topics such as intelligence are involved. As the book goes on,
Charlie slowly starts to realize that his so called friends were actually just making fun of him and
laugh mainly because he did something goofy.
On the contrary, Charlie is also blessed to have a few great friends and even mere acquaintances in his
life. One of the most significant friends that Charlie makes in Flowers For Algernon, is Miss Kinnian.
Even though the author, Daniel Keyes, never states directly that Miss Kinnian isn t Charlie s friend,
the reader can infer so based on the progression of

Foreshadowing Examples In The Most Dangerous Game
In the short story, The Most Dangerous Game, author Richard Connell expertly exploits
foreshadowing and vivid imagery to emphasize danger and suspense. Many authors attempt to do this,
but only a small few succeed. Everyone who has stayed up past their bedtime reading a book will tell
you, they stayed awake because the book they were reading was filled with suspense. It is suspense
that separates the great stories from the good stories. And The Most Dangerous Game is definately a
great one. By using foreshadowing and utilizing his characters five senses, Connell keeps readers at
the edge of their seats, eagerly waiting to find out what comes next. Foreshadowing is a vital
ingredient to any suspenseful story. It hints at the idea that something is off kilter, without ever
revealing exactly what that something is. This leaves readers with an uneasy feeling about the plot, but
they can t quite figure out why. Because of that suspicious feeling, readers are left with a burning
desire to find out what happens on the next page. Foreshadowing can be achieved many different
ways, such as through eree names, unpleasant conversations, and odd occurrences. In one of the very
first sentences in the story, readers can already observe the usages of foreshadowing. The island they
land on is referred to as Ship Trap Island, which hints at the danger it holds for sailors who may be
passing by. A few paragraphs later, it is mentioned that the island holds a very unpleasant

A History of Submissive Women in Literature
The feminine gender has long been one that has been repressed throughout history and forced to
acclimate itself to a world dominated by men. Although major improvements have been made in the
strife for equality, this continues to be a man s world. In the short stories The Chrysanthemums and A
Rose for Emily, as well as in the drama A Doll s House, the protagonists are all frustrated women who
are unfulfilled with their subservient lives. Partly imposed upon them by their setting s historical and
societal norms, they choose to either do something about it or continue to internalize their
dissatisfaction. When analyzing these pieces of literature, it becomes quite obvious which of the
protagonists fall under the category of those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Elizabeth Hardwick, Nora is intrinsically independent and free spirited from the very
beginning of the play (294). Unni Langås also wrote an essay on Ibsen s drama and about Nora s
specific motives. He wrote, When she performs acts that are generally reserved for men, or withdraws
from practices associated with women, she shows the gender attribution of these acts to be social
constructions and thereby contests their reified status (157). So, Langås claims that Nora s rebellion
and discontent began long before she literally walked out on Trovald, her husband. The events that
eventually unfolded at the end of the play and that lead her to finally leave her husband were just those
last straws that broke the camel s back. Before her final stage exit, Ibsen has Nora say, For eight years
I have been patiently waiting, enforcing this idea of long lived frustration (3.1107). Again, this idea of
the rebellious woman at the end of the nineteenth century was not only reserved to post Civil War
America as was the case with Emily Grierson. Nora Helmer and her insurgence, against all ethical and
moral norms of society at the time, did not go unnoticed in Northern Europe. According to Marilyn
Yalom, The idea that a respectable woman should renounce her role as wife and mother, leave her
husband and children, and strike out on her own was seen

Taking a Look at the Britannia Panopticon
The Britannia Panopticon is not the sort of heritage you walk about gazing at while thinking, Isn t that
pretty , admitted the music hall s preservation director Judith Bowers. She claims that a truly restored
Panopticon would have to reflect its thousand strong poor and even rough audience, paying tribute to
the folk who frequented the theatre over its long history.
The Panopticon was built in 1857 on the site of an old warehouse by the partnership of little known
architect Thomas Gildard and his brother in law H.M. McFarlane. The building, which was born as a
music hall and can be counted among the first to get electricity in Glasgow, became one of the earliest
establishments to be put into moving picture. It also housed freak shows, carnivals, waxworks and
even an indoor zoo attracting a diverse audience. It came to be called a people s theatre in the hands of
its most notable owner A.E. Pickard a notorious business man, millionaire and quite the eccentric
person. Unblemished or nearly intact purpose built theatres from an early age are extremely rare in
Britain. This is due to the fact that theatres that were failing financially were razed by the dozens in
order to sell the land. Even financially successful theatres were razed so that they could be rebuilt
bigger and better. Consequently, Britannia Music Hall, one of the few remaining examples of a
nineteenth century music hall, is worth restoration and preservation. Other historic theatre buildings,

The Addict By Michael Stein
Introduction
The non fictional novel The Addict offers a current perspective through the author s eyes, Michael
Stein, into the trials and tribulations that one has to go through when being an opiate addict. The
processes that addicts go through becomes instantly examinable, offering insight into how individuals
become addicted and what they go through while trying to become rehabilitated. Lucy Fields is the
main patient described by Michael Stein in this book. Lucy is addicted to Vicodin and has been
addicted for a number of years. Despite many social stigmas associated around addicts, becoming
addicted to anything does not happen in a short amount of time. The context in which a person is
living, their socioeconomic status, their social support and perceived social support are all factors in
becoming addicted or rehabilitated. Throughout the book Michael Stein speaks about multiple patients
and refers to buprenorphine as the primary prescribed drug for opiate users, he also refers to
methadone treatment. The effectiveness of buprenorphine was shown through the book and how it is,
with the help of adequate social and medical support, a viable option with regards to treating opiate
addiction. Addiction to opiates is developing and continues to be a large problem in many countries.
Substitution for such opiates in pharmacotherapy has shown to reduce the use of illicit drugs and the
potential criminal behavior that is associated with taking opiates (Merrill J, Alterman A,

nobles bolstered by a French armed force, made war on King John in light of his refusal to

the control of the insubordinate aristocrats and the French, it was imagined that Henry ought to be

The strengths pioneer against Henry was driven by his brother by marriage Simon de Montfort, sixth
Earl of Leicester, who was hitched to Henry s sister Eleanor. de Montfort needed to reassert the

the Battle of Lewes, Henry and his child, the future King Edward I, were crushed and caught. Henry
was compelled to summon a parliament and to guarantee to run with the exhortation of a gathering of
nobles. Henry was lessened to a nonentity lord, and de Montfort expanded parliamentary
representation to incorporate gatherings past the respectability, individuals from every area of England
and numerous imperative towns. After fifteen months, Edward drove the royalists into fight once

Questions On The Research Process Essay
In addition, (Blakstad, 2008) discusses the research process and defines it as the step by step
procedures of developing one s research . Tuner (2009) indicates that the availability of resources
requirements is major factors to consider when selecting research questions. Sauro (2013) discussion
of the research process provides further details on the factors that contribute to the successful research
question selection.
In selecting a successful research question, the research must be able to identify the researcher must
see the need for this particular study, define the issue, and to find solution or solutions to resolve it.
The research should provide a clear picture for the researcher to discover if the research question can
be solved. How, What, When and Why are major contributing factors, How is to analyze how the
research will be carried out. When, is the appropriate timing that suits all stakeholders that involved
and what the type of study is? The researcher has to be mindful of the topic chosen, it is vital that the
topic is of interest; otherwise, the research may become insignificant, inconsistent or even inadequate.
Why is it significant to conduct a research as such? Daniel (2015) added that these questions are
pertinent, as it acts as an evaluator as to determine if the research question is unclear.
The Collection of data is another factor which contributes to the research question it gives light to the
question and ask the following question, is

What Are The Factors That Affect The Civil Rights Movement
The Civil Rights Movement brought to light of a lot of issues that were affecting the people of the
United States. These issues included racism and women s rights, and people who felt they were
discriminated against began to challenge how they were treated. One such group was the National
Organization for Women, a group which fought to ensure equality for women. The National
Organization for Women had a lasting impact on the Civil Rights Movement, and the history of
women.
A group of four women who felt like the country needed to change the way women were treated took
action and started the National Organization for Women. While many women still worked, they were
paid less than their male counterparts. Many employers didn t view women s pay as necessary for the
family, they saw it as extra money the family could use. Marriage Bar was used by many employers,
where many married women could not work certain occupations. Even though many still worked and
kept their jobs, they were paid very little and not treated equally.
The National Organization for Women was founded by a group of feminist in 1966. This group
included author, Betty Friedan, who wrote The Feminine Mystique. The book is credited with starting
second wave feminism. Another notable woman who was involved was Pauli Murray, a law ... Show

Adam And Eve Myths
The story of Adam and Eve from The Bible is a mythical story that explains why people are what we
are today. It is a myth because it explains why there is fear and pain in the world. It also shows how
men and women were created by God. The story of Adam and Eve also explains why there is good
and evil.
The story of Adam and Eve describes why there is pain and fear. In the beginning of the story Adam
and Eve are fearless. Adam and Eve are hubristic and they decide to disobey God s orders. When God
takes them out of the garden they begin to realize what fear is. Adam says, I was afraid, because I was
naked; and I hid myself (Genesis 3:15). This explains why the story is a myth because it shows why
there is fear in the world today. The

Socrates Is A Good Person
In an effort to spread the word of Socrates to a larger audience, Plato often wrote down the discussions
he held in the form of dialogues. In these dialogues, Socrates continuously makes an effort to define
that which is not easily defined and addresses questions in which the solution is not always straight
forward. Reading through Plato s dialogues, such as, Euthyphro, Crito and The Apology, readers can
ponder the claims Socrates makes and receive a particular insight into his point of view. It is known
that Socrates is sentenced to death after being charged with corrupting the youth and denying the
existence of the gods, as he presents his defense in The Apology. However, the debate as to whether or
not Socrates is a good person is left up to interpretation as he never clearly states that he believes
himself to be one. Nevertheless, his actions reflect that he is indeed a good person because of his
constant pursuit of the complete truth in all matters, his lifestyle choices and unconcern for material
objects and lastly his lack of fear in the certain face of death. In Plato s Euthyphro, Socrates innate
need to reach a certain undisputed truth or the most accurate truth is abundantly clear. In this dialogue,
Socrates is summoned to court by Meletus on charges of impurity while Euthyphro must prosecute his
own father who is charged with murdering a hired hand. However, the dialogue is quickly veered
toward uncovering the complete definition of piety , as Socrates

Gas Turbines Sensitivity to Critical Speeds
Gas turbines are very sensitive to critical speeds affecting their low pressure blades. These critical
speeds may be close to the rated operating speed leaving a small margin on the allowed frequency
range before reaching a protective Changeover. Typically a protective instantaneous low speed
Changeover on gas turbines may be set at 96% of the nominal system frequency. Furthermore, system
generation and stability are at risk as the frequency drops. This is specially the case for a thermal
generation plant where power output mostly depends on motor driven auxiliary loads, such as boiler
feed water pumps, coal pulverizing, and draft fans. The drop in system frequency instigates a rapid fall
of power output to the auxiliary loads, causing further reduction of the energy input to the turbine
generator. This sequence of events further deteriorates the system frequency endangering the entire
plant stability. To halt the drop in frequency, it is necessary to intentionally, and automatically
disconnect a portion of the load equal to or greater than the generation deficiency in order to achieve
balanced power economics while maintaining system stability. Automated load shedding systems are
necessary for industrial power systems since sudden disturbances can plunge a system into a
hazardous state much faster than an operator can react. These automated schemes must be designed
and implemented to possess in depth knowledge of system operating parameters and must rely on time

The Influence Of Hadrian s Unjust Society
Have you ever envisioned something powerful, but to become magnificent there needed to be a

Hadrian s devotion for the people and orderliness of the Roman Empire was the main drive towards

(McKay, Hill, Buckler, Crowston, Weisner Hanks, Perry, (2014, p.167), Hadrian had an impressive

back and made commands. He was a hands on emperor whom traveled many years traveling and

between the people of Rome and the issues they experienced, Hadrian was able to learn firsthand and
knew beyond a doubt what needed changes the most. Rome was an unjust society for many decades,
however Hadrian saw things differently. Hadrian had a credible military background before assuming
the empire seat; this is what gave him the knowledge towards necessary army and military changes.
One way of putting things in perspective and evolving orderliness with in the empire was to make the
people feel safe and secure; this resulted in building a wall between boarders, Hadrian s Wall (McKay,

The Pros And Cons Of Inmate Re-Incarceration In Prison
SUMMARY: Many inmates are incarcerated in prison for years and sometimes decades, then released
back into society with little education or training. Studies have found that 19 percent of inmates are
entirely illiterate, and 75 percent are functionally illiterate and read at a 4th grade level. Therefore,
without education, vocational training, or the ability to secure employment, many formerly
incarcerated people maladapt to society and return to crime and prison. Thus, a vicious cycle of re
incarceration called inmate recidivism is created. With all the positive outcomes of inmate education,

Due to today s political climate may be problematic in getting State Funds allocation passed through

Cellular Respiration Research Paper
Respiration is very important in providing energy to your body, all living things run on energy. Energy
is provided from different sources, for an example plant life receives its energy source from the Sun.
All other forms of life receive energy through cellular respiration. Cellular respiration happens in three
stages; Glycolysis, The Krebs Cycle, Electron transport chain and chemiosmosis. The cellular
respiration process can be aerobic or anaerobic.
In order for the human body to function it requires energy, the body s energy source comes from the
food we eat on a daily bases. We consume carbohydrates, fats, and proteins that our body uses to

It breaks down simple sugar or glucose into pyruvates to make energy available to cells. The first step
of the process involves two phosphate groups attaching to one glucose molecule to form a carbon
compound with two phosphate groups. The phosphate groups are converted into molecules of ADP or
Adenosine diphosphate, which is the de energized form of ATP. The carbon compound is then split
into carbon molecules glyceraldehyde 3 phosphates, which are oxidized and each receives a phosphate
group, forming three carbon compound molecules. The oxidation of glyceraldehyde 3 phosphates

Ellen Kirschman, author of I Love a FireFighter, suggests proven ways to treat cases of traumatic
stress that is experienced while on the job. Her suggestions include cognitive behavioral therapy,
exercise, medications, and eye movement and desensitization reprocessing, commonly known as
EMDR. In addition to these professional coping options, other coping mechanisms include expressing
yourself and sharing your fears and experience, creating a mission for your life to create meaning, and
distracting yourself which can provide a little temporary relief with something new and engaging to
occupy your thoughts. (p.189) I believe based on this information, it may be more helpful for a
firefighter and other emergency responders to cope via the latter mentioned mechanisms because they
focus more on the individual s fears, experiences, and emotions. Creating meaning in your life and
finding enjoyable hobbies to distract from work can help to unload much of the stress from the job.
Furthermore, researchers tend to agree that expressing your emotion is beneficial for dealing with

Phase0c: Finally the team expanded upon the singles opportunity area by turning the ideas into
nascent product concepts that connected to value propositions and described the product s fit to the

Problems and Reasons: Though the management of Simmons liked the hard work and presentation

A Closer Look On How Foreign Doctors Are Discriminated
A Closer Look on how Foreign Doctors are discriminated A lot of people are bewildered why more
foreign doctors are not invited to work in American workplaces. There is a severe discrimination and
prejudice amongst anyone who is not an innate U.S. citizen. One of the main reasons why Americans
are trying to push foreigners away is for the safety of their nation. Some Americans think that all
foreigners are terrorists and are set out to destroy Americans but this is not true at all. In fact, statistics
show that foreigners actually bring good to the nation. Brian Palmer, author of Slate magazine says,
During the 1990s, a series of studies showed that graduates of foreign medical colleges performed
slightly worse on exams than their U.S. trained colleagues, and program heads gave marginally better
reviews to domestic physicians. By the turn of the century, however, that gap had disappeared.
International graduates now score higher than U.S. educated doctors on many exams (Palmer). This
was shocking to know that even though foreign doctors are doing better than domestic doctors, they
are still mistreated. Mistreatment of doctors not only spans out nationwide but hits close to home as
well. I know a person who had to endure this cruel experience. I truly care for her and she inspires me
to be a doctor like she is. For the sake of anonymity and spilling private personal information, I will
call her Jane Doe and omit some details. A couple weeks ago, I interviewed her on

The Merchant of Venice Essay
In the comedy, The Merchant of Venice, the roles and responsibilities of women is a significant social
issue proposed by Shakespeare. This theme is communicated by the only three female characters in
the play: Nerissa, Portia and Jessica. For example, in Act 4 during the trial between Antonio and
Shylock, Portia and Nerissa disguise themselves as Balthasar and Bellario to free their friend.
However, Jessica also plays a minor role in portraying the independence of Jewish women in a
Christian and Elizabethan society, by successfully betraying her father, Shylock. These characters
portray Shakespeare s overall opinion on women, as well as a modern audience s view on Elizabethan
society in many significant ways by accentuating themes, ideas ... Show more content on

The audience, as well as Bassanio, view Portia as a beautiful, immaculate, aristocratic and fair lady.
However after Act 5, Portia is nothing, but prejudicial and bigoted, as she is the cause of Shylock s
demise and claims that she used my [her] body to punish Bassanio for abusing her gift of love: the
ring. This is ironic, because Portia infringes her relationship with Bassanio by inferring she has
committed an affair, even though she herself accuses him of abusing her love and power by losing the
ring. This implies that relationships in Elizabethan society were corrupt and fake, which allowed many
women in particular to commit religious crimes against their husbands. Furthermore, Shakespeare
additionally uses the theme of deception to convey that women are superior to men. This seen when
Portia tells Nerissa that I [she] have work in hand/ That you yet know of. We ll see our
husbands/Before they think of us (3.4), as she wants to help Bassanio and Gratiano save Antonio s life
by disguising. In general, many Elizabethan playwrights such as Twelfth Night and The Merry Wives
of Windsor, allow the audience to understand the fact that the position of women was such, so that
they could not become active (3.4) in society. By Portia and Nerissa dressing up as Balthasar and
Bellario, this would give them temporary masculinity and so, the ability to do things that normal
social codes would not,

INTRODUCTION Lipids are organic compounds found in living organisms that are insoluble or
slightly soluble in water but soluble in non polar organic solvents.
Lipids can be classified into four groups which are fats, oils, and waxes, compound lipids, steroids,
and derived lipids.
Various experiments are done on lipids. Some tests are for saturation, presence of certain compounds,
or for the different chemical reactions that lipids undergo.
Lipids may be composed of esters, amides, alcohols, cyclic, acyclic, or polycyclic ... Show more

It is predominantly composed of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Many classes of lipids
also contain nitrogen and phosphorus. The relative amounts of these elements, as well as their
structural positions, determine the degree of solubility of the lipid in various solvents. Lipids with high
hydrocarbon content are relatively nonpolar in nature and insoluble in water. The ionic character of a
lipid can be altered by changes in solvent pH. For example, if the solvent contains a strong acid or a
strong base, hydrolysis of some of the ester bonds will occur. When this happens, the products of
hydrolysis may have solubility properties very different from those of the original lipid molecule.
Structures of the different Samples and Solvents
Sample 1: Vegetable Oil (Oleic acid)
Oleic acid has the chemical formula C17H33COOH
Due to its large nonpolar portion, oleic acid is insoluble in water and, being less dense than water, it
floats on the water surface. The polar COOH end, however, is attracted to water molecules. So, a thin
coating of oleic acid on the surface of water results

Laurel Creek Health Care Center V. Bishop Essay
Laurel Creek Health Care Center v. Bishop
Court of Appeals of Kentucky,____S.W.3d___(2010)
FACTS
Gilbert Bishop was admitted to Laurel Creek Health Care Center on July 23, 2002, after arriving via
ambulance without family present. During that examination, Gilbert communicated to Laurel Creek
staff that he could not use his hands well enough to write or hold a pencil. Gilbert was otherwise
found to be mentally competent. Gilbert s sister, Rachel Combs, arrived after Gilbert, she offered to
sign the admissions forms, but Laurel Creek employees told her that it was their policy to have the
patient s spouse sign the admissions papers if the patient was unable to sign them. Rachel also testified
that Gilbert asked her to get his wife, Anna ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
REASON
Laurel Creek first argues that this is a case of actual agency and that Anna Bishop has actual authority
as Gilbert s agent to sign the admissions paperwork as is therefore bound by the arbitration agreement
therein.
We agree with Laurel Creek that Gilbert created an actual agency relationship between him and his
wife. According to his sister, Rachel, Gilbert specifically asked that his wife be brought to the nursing
home so that she could sign the admissions documents for him, and Anna acted upon that delegation
of authority and signed the admissions papers. This is consistent with the creation of actual authority
as described in the Restatement (Third) of Agency § 2.01, comment c (2006). The Restatement
explains the rationale for the creation of actual agency in three steps. First, the principal manifests
assent to be affected by the agent s action. In the instant case, Gilbert asked that Anna come to the
hospital to sign the papers for him. Second, the agent s actions establish the agent s consent to act on
the principal s behalf. Here, Anna signed all the admissions papers per her husband s request and
therefore consented to act on Gilbert s behalf. Third, by acting within such authority, the agent affects
the principal s legal relations with third parties. Clearly here, Anna s actions affected Gilbert s
relations with Laurel Creek, a third party.
The trial court acknowledged that Gilbert had the

Theme Of Masculinity In If And Do Not Go Gentle
What images of masculinity appear in If and Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night? How do the
two poems compare? (30)
In both If and Do not go gentle, there is an obvious theme of masculinity flowing through both poems.
In If Rudyard Kipling has written the poem to showcase what unspoken rules you should follow to be
a good man. Many of the descriptions following very masculine stereotypes. In line four and five,
Kipling writes, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their
doubting too; . Kipling prompts the individual to preserve a sense of self even when that self is
threatened by the outside world. Nonetheless, he also advises against erring too far in the other
direction and conducting the risk of isolation, self righteousness, and ignorance. Kipling is proposing a
middle path. Rather than deciding to live life a certain one way (trusting yourself) or the other
(doubting yourself when others do), he inspires the reader to both trust yourself and allow for the
world s and your own doubts. On the other hand, Kipling may appear to be middle of the road, a
people pleaser, afraid to confront adversary. Creating his confrontation of opposition through his
writing, instead of lashing out.
Whereas in Do not go gentle , Dylan Thomas shows that men can still show emotion and have intense
feelings, but also be seen as masculine. But Thomas also says that to be good all your life could devise
regrets when on your death bed, in

Imagery In The House On Mango Street Cisneros
1. Identify an instance where Cisneros uses powerful imagery. Explain the effect of that imagery upon
the reader. Remember that imagery can appeal to any of the senses , including sight, sound, taste,
smell, to touch. Cisneros used powerful imagery appealing to the sense of sight when portraying their
dream house, [their] house would have running water and pipes that worked. And inside it would have
real stairs, not hallway stairs, but stairs inside like the houses on T.V. And [they d] have a basement
and at least three washrooms so when [they] took a bath [they] wouldn t have to tell everybody.
[Their] house would be white with trees around it, a great big yard and grass growing without a fence

On Esperanza s first day, she wore a dress which made her look older because she had to lie and say
she was older than she was to be able to work there, she felt nervous and scared not even able to take a
seat without thinking she may get in trouble. She ate by herself in a bathroom stall, finished early and
got back to work, then at break time she stayed in the coat closet and sat on a bench. Nearing the end
of her day Esperanza meets one of the night/ evening shifts people, he is an older guy with nice eyes,
they speak and become friends and he says it s his birthday and he wishes for a birthday kiss, she
gives one on his cheek but he grabs her face and holds it on the lips and doesn t let go (Cisneros 53).
For Esperanza, she got more than a first job, she got a first kiss, at a time she didn t expect at all. This
effected the plot, in how Esperanza expected her job to be, for starters she expected her first job not to
start for at least another week, and she figured she d have to get it on her own not served on a platter
by her aunt. Plus she did not imagine meeting a boy and being

Back To Back Analysis
Drake didn t waste anytime dropping another diss record aimed at Meek Mill. Drake s Back to Back is
the follow up to the rapper s first diss track regarding Mill, which is entitled Charged Up. Besides
going on Twitter to respond to Drake, Mill has yet to lyrically respond to the Toronto rapper. Drake
addressed Mill s actions in Back to Back by rapping that Mill s trigger fingers turned to Twitter
fingers. Mill was expected to drop a response to Drake on Monday night, but that diss record never
came into fruition. Hot 97 DJ Funkmaster Flex, who intially involved himself in the ghostwriting
accusations, announced on social media that Mill was dropping a response to Charged Up. The DJ
posted on Instagram that the Mill s response would premiere on Hot 97 at 7pm (Eastern standard
time), but unfortunately Flex never received the song. Fans and listeners tuned in awaiting the Mill
diss record, and once they realized there was no song, anticipation turned into anger. People were
pointing fingers at Hot 97 and Flex, and someone even created a petition to have Flex fired from the
radio station. Hot 97 s Ebro ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tour recently made a stop in Drake s hometown of Toronto, and hundreds of fans showed their
support for Drake by wearing t shirts with pictures of two cell phone battery icons; Drake s name was

Back to Back diss, Drake rapped about Mill being on tour with Minaj. You love her then you gotta
give the world to her/ Is that a world tour or your girl s tour/ I know that you gotta be a thug for her/
This ain t what she meant when she told you to open up more. It should also be noted Drake named
the song Back to Back in reference to the Toronto Blue Jays back to back World Series wins against
the Philadelphia Phillies in 1992 and 1993. Mill s hometown is

Laws Affecting The Agency Of The United States Postal Service
Laws Affecting The Agency
When it comes to The United States Postal Service, I did not think they would have many court cases,
especially dealing with diversity and mistreatment in the workplace. During my research, however, I
was proven wrong. The Postal Service has had quite a few court cases, while many of them relate to
ethical and discriminatory issues. Individuals have felt that the Postal Service sometimes judge
applicants or workers by their lifestyle or ethnicity. This in turn shows bad representation of personnel
management. One case that shows proof of this is the United States Postal Service v. Aikens. Harold
Aikens, who was a black employee of the USPS, opened a case against his job being that he felt he
was not receiving promotions because of his ethnicity. This is a direct violation of Title VII if found to
be true. According to the USPS, Aikens applied for a promotion for which he possessed the minimum
qualifications, and that the employer selected a nonminority applicant, the parties and the Court of
Appeals have unnecessarily evaded the ultimate question of discrimination... (Bartholet 1982).
Ultimately, the court upheld that Aikens did not in fact present a valid prima faci case, which the
plaintiff creates a belief that the employer discriminated against him, and have evidence that backs up
his claim. Due to the failure to prove that he was being discriminated against due to his race, the case
did not go in his way. Regardless of the judgement, this

  • 2. A Brief History of Courtship and Dating in America A Brief History of Courtship and Dating in America, Part 1 [pic]by The Rev d Skip Burzumato [pic] Whenever possible, I love to use the word courtship in everyday conversation with young and old alike. It s one of those words with which most people are familiar, but have vastly differing opinions of what it means. For many, courtship is an old fashioned word. It summons visions of men wooing women with small tokens of affection and asking their hand in marriage on bended knee. For social scientists, studies of courtship usually look at the process of mate selection. (Social scientists, among whom I number myself from time to time, will never be accused of being romantics.) For the purpose of this article the preparation for and proposal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They knew what was normal. Prior to the 20th century, normal was determined within families and local communities, but now a higher authority, with wide spread circulation and readership, began to form a national consciousness. Thirdly, we see a change in sexual norms in the West. With the onset of the sexual revolution the question arose, Why would a man court and woo a woman when he could gain a chief benefit of marriage, namely sexual gratification, for free with no commitment? (Friendship with benefits is a contemporary example.) Closely related to this is the invention of birth control. There is too much that could be said here, so I ll be brief. Simply put, with the onset of the widespread use of chemical and other means of birth control, the language of procreation of having children was separated from the language of marriage. As U. of Chicago ethicist Leon Kass argues in his chapter on courtship in Building a Healthy Culture: Strategies for an American Renaissance, under the old system of courtship, marriage and bringing a child into the world were inextricably linked. But no longer. With the ever decreasing risk of pregnancy, having sex and being married were no longer tied together. Fourthly, we find a change in the models and metaphors used to describe the home and family. Prior ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Sherlock Holmes Anti Hero Essay The age of the anti hero is upon us. Historically, the stories are only told about heroes Captain America, Superman, etc. but the anti hero has been gaining more traction, more light, in popular culture and social media. Anti heroes have begun to grace the screens of primetime television or earning their own series on Netflix. When looking into anti heroes plenty come to mind: Daredevil, Walter White, Lestat to name a few. But what if a famous literature character who came back due to popular demand the kind who saves the day as an anti hero? This character is Sherlock Holmes. He cares for Mrs. Hudson, Lestrade, and John Watson and these relationships keep him tethered to humanity, to the world he s alienated from by his addiction. However, the redemptive qualities offer no salvation for Sherlock Holmes. He sees only his harmful, anti hero qualities, rebuking any praise he receives. Don t make people into heroes, John. Heroes don t exist, and if they did I wouldn t be one of them (The Great Game). Sherlock is eternally locked in limbo, damnation, recognizing himself as playing on the side of angels but denied a place amongst their ranks Don t think for a second that I am one of them (Reichenbach Fall). • 4. The Prospect Of Human Cloning The prospect of human cloning was introduced in February 1997 when an embryologist was able to produce a lamb through the process of cloning. Once the lamb was cloned, the question of whether research for human cloning came into being. Society and researchers have feuded over whether human cloning should be banned or allowed for research and reproduction purposes. Each side has reasonable ideologies to continue their stance towards the opposing argument. Pro cloners believe that the research developed from human cloning will benefit society, while those who oppose it believe there are numerous risks in allowing the research. A decision will be reached when both sides compromise and reach an agreement. In the novel Scientific and Medical Aspects of Human Reproductive Cloning, written by a committee of scientist and engineers, state that society will be the overall decision maker for human cloning (2003, p. xi). Many individuals in society currently do not approve of the human cloning research process. Some are concerned that the cloned child would have issues with its self identity. and some believe that cloning a human is overall morally wrong. The prospect of social identity problems arises from what Nestor Morales, a Professor of Psychology at New York, cites that cloned children, knowing that they have been a planned to be a copy from another problem, ... , may diminish their sense on uniqueness (Morales, 2009, p. 44). Each of these different forms are treated as a different god. There is a very popular story about Horus, which I will focus on in this essay. It described Horus as a son of Osiris and Isis. According to ancient.eu, Osiris was worshiped the most, and as he is one of the oldest gods in Ancient Egypt. He was considered to be the god of afterlife. Everyone respected and admired him. This is because in Ancient Egypt, the afterlife was considered to be more important than real life. The ancient Egyptians respected the dead, and even referred to them as being the living ones. According to Nanno Marinatos, author of Gods, Heroes, And Monsters a source book of greek, roman, and near eatern myths in translation, Horus was considered to be the role model for all rulers of the Kingdom of Egypt. It was believed that Horus would guide the pharaohs and help them. Horus was also considered to be the god of the sun and sky. His name and appearance proved this. Horus eyes were symbols for the sun and moon. His right eye was the sun, and his left eye was the moon. Horus eyes became the moon and the sun when Set and Horus had endlessly battled for the control over Egypt. They fought many times until the other gods finally stopped them. They decided since Set had killed Osiris for the throne and Horus has killed no one for the throne, that Horus will take the throne since it is his birth right. When Horus won the battle, he became Horus the Elder. In the fight between Set and Horus, Set lost his testicle. Set was the god of fertility. This is why the Egyptian desert cannot grow crops. Horus lost his left eye in the battle. It became the moon, since it was very weak when compared to the sun, which was his right eye. • 6. Biometric And Identification Of Biometric Identification Biometric methodologies emerged into existence in 1858 by use of recording hand images for identification purposes. From 1858 to 1896 studies progressed in the identification of individuals by hand geometry, a person s measurements, and fingerprints. From the year 1936 to 1985 biometric studies proceeded for iris pattern, face recognition, acoustic speech, written signature, and hand identification. Patents for hand and iris identification became a reality 1985 to 1986 and in 1988 the first semi automated facial recognition system was deployed. By 1991 face recognition is automated with the ability of detecting faces in real time. By the mid to late 1990 s biometric methodologies evolves and is integrated into technology allowing the practice of fingerprint, palm systems, and iris identification to become more reliable with increased automation capabilities. Studies therefore increased and biometric technology became even more advanced in the early 2000 s up until today s time. There are now about 14 different types of biometric technologies that exist today. These biometric technologies are DNA, Iris, Retina, face, fingerprint, finger geometry, hand geometry, odor, typing, vein, voice, and gait recognition which are all techniques of identifying and authenticating individuals that would provide a more reliable and efficient way of verifying a person identification also preventing access to unauthorized personnel. • 8. Rhetorical Analysis On The Perils Of Indifference He was finally free, but there was no joy in his heart. He thought there never would be again . This quote stated by Elie Wiesel from his speech, The Perils of Indifference , refers to the day Elie Wiesel got liberated from the Holocaust when he was young. The Holocaust was just one of the many horrific tragedies that occurred during that century. In hopes of changing the future for the better, Wiesel decides to deliver a speech about helping the victims of injustice. He gives this speech intended for the President, Mrs. Clinton, members of Congress, Ambassador Holbrooke, Excellencies, and friends hoping that they will make positive changes for the future. By using rhetorical strategies such as anaphora, rhetorical questions, and ethos, Wiesel tries to help the victims of injustice and prevent future tragedies from happening. Throughout Wiesel s speech, he used a copious amount of anaphora. Wiesel used this technique to help get his point across to the audience. He explains how easy it is to use indifference; consequently, people are taking opportunities from others. Wiesel explains, our work, our dreams, our hopes (Wiesel 1 2), to show the audience what indifference is effecting in their lives. By repeating the word our before each subject that is being affected, he is showing the audience that the victims being affected have their own opportunity for work, dreams, and hopes. By others being indifferent, the victims may not have those opportunities anymore. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Character Analysis Of Daniel KeyesFlowers For Algernon Humans are human; all people change in one way or the other over the course of certain events. Some of the changes people experience may cause them to have a sad outlook on certain matters, others may cause people to have a positive outlook on a matter. Just like all other humans, Charlie, from Daniel Keyes Flowers For Algernon changes over some time too. His life drastically changes after he gets surgery to alter his intelligence level. In Daniel Keyes Flowers For Algernon, Charlie becomes a different person over the course of events. His most significant changes include his mentality towards certain people and his attitude, and also the sudden regression of his mental health after his surgery. First off, one of the main changes Charlie faces is his ability to think about other people that he uses to think where his friends. Friends are one of the defining factors of what a certain person will turn out to be like, or how they feel about certain matters. Poor friends will give second rate influences and will most likely ruin a person s life, but good friends will make a person feel happy and support this person. Charlie is faced with not so great friends in Flowers For Algernon. According to his progress reports, many of Charlie s friends bully him. Charlie does not know this at certain times during the book, but the reader does. His friends make fun of him and make him do stupid things. In Progress Report 8, on March 25, Joe Carp said hey look where Charlie had his operashun what did they do Charlie put some brains in. Charlie does not realize it, but Joe Carp is actually making fun of him to an unacceptable level where sensitive topics such as intelligence are involved. As the book goes on, Charlie slowly starts to realize that his so called friends were actually just making fun of him and laugh mainly because he did something goofy. On the contrary, Charlie is also blessed to have a few great friends and even mere acquaintances in his life. One of the most significant friends that Charlie makes in Flowers For Algernon, is Miss Kinnian. Even though the author, Daniel Keyes, never states directly that Miss Kinnian isn t Charlie s friend, the reader can infer so based on the progression of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Foreshadowing Examples In The Most Dangerous Game In the short story, The Most Dangerous Game, author Richard Connell expertly exploits foreshadowing and vivid imagery to emphasize danger and suspense. Many authors attempt to do this, but only a small few succeed. Everyone who has stayed up past their bedtime reading a book will tell you, they stayed awake because the book they were reading was filled with suspense. It is suspense that separates the great stories from the good stories. And The Most Dangerous Game is definately a great one. By using foreshadowing and utilizing his characters five senses, Connell keeps readers at the edge of their seats, eagerly waiting to find out what comes next. Foreshadowing is a vital ingredient to any suspenseful story. It hints at the idea that something is off kilter, without ever revealing exactly what that something is. This leaves readers with an uneasy feeling about the plot, but they can t quite figure out why. Because of that suspicious feeling, readers are left with a burning desire to find out what happens on the next page. Foreshadowing can be achieved many different ways, such as through eree names, unpleasant conversations, and odd occurrences. In one of the very first sentences in the story, readers can already observe the usages of foreshadowing. The island they land on is referred to as Ship Trap Island, which hints at the danger it holds for sailors who may be passing by. A few paragraphs later, it is mentioned that the island holds a very unpleasant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although major improvements have been made in the strife for equality, this continues to be a man s world. In the short stories The Chrysanthemums and A Rose for Emily, as well as in the drama A Doll s House, the protagonists are all frustrated women who are unfulfilled with their subservient lives. Partly imposed upon them by their setting s historical and societal norms, they choose to either do something about it or continue to internalize their dissatisfaction. According to Elizabeth Hardwick, Nora is intrinsically independent and free spirited from the very beginning of the play (294). Unni Langås also wrote an essay on Ibsen s drama and about Nora s specific motives. He wrote, When she performs acts that are generally reserved for men, or withdraws from practices associated with women, she shows the gender attribution of these acts to be social constructions and thereby contests their reified status (157). So, Langås claims that Nora s rebellion and discontent began long before she literally walked out on Trovald, her husband. The events that eventually unfolded at the end of the play and that lead her to finally leave her husband were just those last straws that broke the camel s back. Before her final stage exit, Ibsen has Nora say, For eight years I have been patiently waiting, enforcing this idea of long lived frustration (3.1107). Again, this idea of the rebellious woman at the end of the nineteenth century was not only reserved to post Civil War America as was the case with Emily Grierson. Nora Helmer and her insurgence, against all ethical and moral norms of society at the time, did not go unnoticed in Northern Europe. • 14. Taking a Look at the Britannia Panopticon The Britannia Panopticon is not the sort of heritage you walk about gazing at while thinking, Isn t that pretty , admitted the music hall s preservation director Judith Bowers. She claims that a truly restored Panopticon would have to reflect its thousand strong poor and even rough audience, paying tribute to the folk who frequented the theatre over its long history. The Panopticon was built in 1857 on the site of an old warehouse by the partnership of little known architect Thomas Gildard and his brother in law H.M. McFarlane. The building, which was born as a music hall and can be counted among the first to get electricity in Glasgow, became one of the earliest establishments to be put into moving picture. It also housed freak shows, carnivals, waxworks and even an indoor zoo attracting a diverse audience. It came to be called a people s theatre in the hands of its most notable owner A.E. Pickard a notorious business man, millionaire and quite the eccentric person. Unblemished or nearly intact purpose built theatres from an early age are extremely rare in Britain. This is due to the fact that theatres that were failing financially were razed by the dozens in order to sell the land. Even financially successful theatres were razed so that they could be rebuilt bigger and better. Consequently, Britannia Music Hall, one of the few remaining examples of a nineteenth century music hall, is worth restoration and preservation. Other historic theatre buildings, like the ... The employees answered questions regarding their working conditions, hours worked, training, compensation, treatment, communication, and security. The results of the survey are disappointing to the management at BIMS as the response was only 17.3% of their employees expressing how they feel about the company, and jobs. The initial survey indicated that most of the DMC employees were very unhappy with their current position, their salary, and their work experience at BIMS. With this, the hypothesis for the initial survey is that the results are skewed based upon a lack of input from employees. For BIMS to fully understand the higher than normal turnover rate at this particular facility, additional data will need to be collected. As BIMS initial survey process resulted in such a dismal return rate it left the management staff asking more questions than it has resolved. The Addict By Michael Stein Introduction The non fictional novel The Addict offers a current perspective through the author s eyes, Michael Stein, into the trials and tribulations that one has to go through when being an opiate addict. The processes that addicts go through becomes instantly examinable, offering insight into how individuals become addicted and what they go through while trying to become rehabilitated. Lucy Fields is the main patient described by Michael Stein in this book. Lucy is addicted to Vicodin and has been addicted for a number of years. Despite many social stigmas associated around addicts, becoming addicted to anything does not happen in a short amount of time. The context in which a person is living, their socioeconomic status, their social support and perceived social support are all factors in becoming addicted or rehabilitated. Throughout the book Michael Stein speaks about multiple patients and refers to buprenorphine as the primary prescribed drug for opiate users, he also refers to methadone treatment. The effectiveness of buprenorphine was shown through the book and how it is, with the help of adequate social and medical support, a viable option with regards to treating opiate addiction. • 26. Socrates Is A Good Person In an effort to spread the word of Socrates to a larger audience, Plato often wrote down the discussions he held in the form of dialogues. In these dialogues, Socrates continuously makes an effort to define that which is not easily defined and addresses questions in which the solution is not always straight forward. Reading through Plato s dialogues, such as, Euthyphro, Crito and The Apology, readers can ponder the claims Socrates makes and receive a particular insight into his point of view. It is known that Socrates is sentenced to death after being charged with corrupting the youth and denying the existence of the gods, as he presents his defense in The Apology. However, the debate as to whether or not Socrates is a good person is left up to interpretation as he never clearly states that he believes himself to be one. Nevertheless, his actions reflect that he is indeed a good person because of his constant pursuit of the complete truth in all matters, his lifestyle choices and unconcern for material objects and lastly his lack of fear in the certain face of death. In Plato s Euthyphro, Socrates innate need to reach a certain undisputed truth or the most accurate truth is abundantly clear. • 28. Gas Turbines Sensitivity to Critical Speeds Gas turbines are very sensitive to critical speeds affecting their low pressure blades. These critical speeds may be close to the rated operating speed leaving a small margin on the allowed frequency range before reaching a protective Changeover. Typically a protective instantaneous low speed Changeover on gas turbines may be set at 96% of the nominal system frequency. Furthermore, system generation and stability are at risk as the frequency drops. This is specially the case for a thermal generation plant where power output mostly depends on motor driven auxiliary loads, such as boiler feed water pumps, coal pulverizing, and draft fans. The drop in system frequency instigates a rapid fall of power output to the auxiliary loads, causing further reduction of the energy input to the turbine generator. This sequence of events further deteriorates the system frequency endangering the entire plant stability. To halt the drop in frequency, it is necessary to intentionally, and automatically disconnect a portion of the load equal to or greater than the generation deficiency in order to achieve balanced power economics while maintaining system stability. Automated load shedding systems are necessary for industrial power systems since sudden disturbances can plunge a system into a hazardous state much faster than an operator can react. These automated schemes must be designed and implemented to possess in depth knowledge of system operating parameters and must rely on time sensitive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In addition to these professional coping options, other coping mechanisms include expressing yourself and sharing your fears and experience, creating a mission for your life to create meaning, and distracting yourself which can provide a little temporary relief with something new and engaging to occupy your thoughts. (p.189) I believe based on this information, it may be more helpful for a firefighter and other emergency responders to cope via the latter mentioned mechanisms because they focus more on the individual s fears, experiences, and emotions. Creating meaning in your life and finding enjoyable hobbies to distract from work can help to unload much of the stress from the job. Furthermore, researchers tend to agree that expressing your emotion is beneficial for dealing with stress. According to the authors of the paper Trauma exposed Firefighters , Firefighters and other first responders often engage in approach oriented coping strategies such as problem focused coping rather than emotion focused or avoidance coping (p.357) Emotion and avoidance coping mechanisms often involve seeking emotional support and positive reframing (p.358) By reframing ones view of the world through positive associations, firefighters and other emergency responders are better equipped to deal the trauma and stress from being on the job because it is a holistic effort to change their point of view rather than just trying to deal with one specific ... He joins in a fight between a number of British looking soldiers and native villagers, and, greatly outnumbered, is killed by a poisonous dart in the temple. • 42. A Closer Look On How Foreign Doctors Are Discriminated A Closer Look on how Foreign Doctors are discriminated A lot of people are bewildered why more foreign doctors are not invited to work in American workplaces. There is a severe discrimination and prejudice amongst anyone who is not an innate U.S. citizen. One of the main reasons why Americans are trying to push foreigners away is for the safety of their nation. Some Americans think that all foreigners are terrorists and are set out to destroy Americans but this is not true at all. In fact, statistics show that foreigners actually bring good to the nation. Brian Palmer, author of Slate magazine says, During the 1990s, a series of studies showed that graduates of foreign medical colleges performed slightly worse on exams than their U.S. trained colleagues, and program heads gave marginally better reviews to domestic physicians. By the turn of the century, however, that gap had disappeared. International graduates now score higher than U.S. educated doctors on many exams (Palmer). This was shocking to know that even though foreign doctors are doing better than domestic doctors, they are still mistreated. Mistreatment of doctors not only spans out nationwide but hits close to home as well. I know a person who had to endure this cruel experience. I truly care for her and she inspires me to be a doctor like she is. For the sake of anonymity and spilling private personal information, I will call her Jane Doe and omit some details. • 43. The Merchant of Venice Essay In the comedy, The Merchant of Venice, the roles and responsibilities of women is a significant social issue proposed by Shakespeare. This theme is communicated by the only three female characters in the play: Nerissa, Portia and Jessica. For example, in Act 4 during the trial between Antonio and Shylock, Portia and Nerissa disguise themselves as Balthasar and Bellario to free their friend. However, Jessica also plays a minor role in portraying the independence of Jewish women in a Christian and Elizabethan society, by successfully betraying her father, Shylock. These characters portray Shakespeare s overall opinion on women, as well as a modern audience s view on Elizabethan society in many significant ways by accentuating themes, ideas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The audience, as well as Bassanio, view Portia as a beautiful, immaculate, aristocratic and fair lady. However after Act 5, Portia is nothing, but prejudicial and bigoted, as she is the cause of Shylock s demise and claims that she used my [her] body to punish Bassanio for abusing her gift of love: the ring. This is ironic, because Portia infringes her relationship with Bassanio by inferring she has committed an affair, even though she herself accuses him of abusing her love and power by losing the ring. This implies that relationships in Elizabethan society were corrupt and fake, which allowed many women in particular to commit religious crimes against their husbands. Furthermore, Shakespeare additionally uses the theme of deception to convey that women are superior to men. This seen when Portia tells Nerissa that I [she] have work in hand/ That you yet know of. We ll see our husbands/Before they think of us (3.4), as she wants to help Bassanio and Gratiano save Antonio s life by disguising. In general, many Elizabethan playwrights such as Twelfth Night and The Merry Wives of Windsor, allow the audience to understand the fact that the position of women was such, so that they could not become active (3.4) in society. By Portia and Nerissa dressing up as Balthasar and Bellario, this would give them temporary masculinity and so, the ability to do things that normal social codes would not, ... REASON Laurel Creek first argues that this is a case of actual agency and that Anna Bishop has actual authority as Gilbert s agent to sign the admissions paperwork as is therefore bound by the arbitration agreement therein. We agree with Laurel Creek that Gilbert created an actual agency relationship between him and his wife. According to his sister, Rachel, Gilbert specifically asked that his wife be brought to the nursing home so that she could sign the admissions documents for him, and Anna acted upon that delegation of authority and signed the admissions papers. This is consistent with the creation of actual authority as described in the Restatement (Third) of Agency § 2.01, comment c (2006). The Restatement explains the rationale for the creation of actual agency in three steps. First, the principal manifests assent to be affected by the agent s action. In the instant case, Gilbert asked that Anna come to the hospital to sign the papers for him. Second, the agent s actions establish the agent s consent to act on the principal s behalf. Here, Anna signed all the admissions papers per her husband s request and therefore consented to act on Gilbert s behalf. Third, by acting within such authority, the agent affects the principal s legal relations with third parties. Clearly here, Anna s actions affected Gilbert s relations with Laurel Creek, a third party. The trial court acknowledged that Gilbert had the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Theme Of Masculinity In If And Do Not Go Gentle What images of masculinity appear in If and Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night? How do the two poems compare? (30) In both If and Do not go gentle, there is an obvious theme of masculinity flowing through both poems. In If Rudyard Kipling has written the poem to showcase what unspoken rules you should follow to be a good man. Many of the descriptions following very masculine stereotypes. In line four and five, Kipling writes, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too; . Kipling prompts the individual to preserve a sense of self even when that self is threatened by the outside world. Nonetheless, he also advises against erring too far in the other direction and conducting the risk of isolation, self righteousness, and ignorance. Kipling is proposing a middle path. Rather than deciding to live life a certain one way (trusting yourself) or the other (doubting yourself when others do), he inspires the reader to both trust yourself and allow for the world s and your own doubts. On the other hand, Kipling may appear to be middle of the road, a people pleaser, afraid to confront adversary. Creating his confrontation of opposition through his writing, instead of lashing out. Whereas in Do not go gentle , Dylan Thomas shows that men can still show emotion and have intense feelings, but also be seen as masculine. Laws Affecting The Agency Of The United States Postal Service Laws Affecting The Agency When it comes to The United States Postal Service, I did not think they would have many court cases, especially dealing with diversity and mistreatment in the workplace. During my research, however, I was proven wrong. The Postal Service has had quite a few court cases, while many of them relate to ethical and discriminatory issues. Individuals have felt that the Postal Service sometimes judge applicants or workers by their lifestyle or ethnicity. This in turn shows bad representation of personnel management. One case that shows proof of this is the United States Postal Service v. Aikens.
