Free Will In Ernest Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants
Free will has been explored since ancient times and the first religions. Does a higher power define fate
or is it humanities choices? The search for answers continues to present day as seen in Ernest
Hemingway s short story Hills like White Elephants; is picking an undesired outcome over another
undesired outcome truly free will? Hemingway uses vivid imagery and metaphors to convey complex
ideas and thoughts. In the story the reader is introduced to a battle of wills and finding true freedom. Is
one characters will more valid or important than another s, will they lose their freedom or gain it by
choosing an outcome. Hemingway uses vivid symbolism, metaphors, setting and characters to
demonstrate how free will comes from the action of making ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Ebro Valley conveys the story itself and opposing viewpoint. Shallow and barren view of
freedom, or the lush green landscape that comes from choice. Jill looks out the window and sees the
barren deserted hill first, a symbol of her current state and feeling with the american. She has no
choice over her life and thus feels empty. In turn she states, They look like white elephants, she said.
(Hemingway 475) Such allusion created a feeling of an elephant in the room. Kenneth Johnson states;
The hills like white elephants also serve to remind one of the couple s conflicting views on abortion. A
white elephant, in one meaning of the term, is anything rare, expensive, and difficult to keep; any
burdensome possession; an object no longer esteemed by its owner though not without value to others.
(Johnson 233 238). This elephant is the baby, the American sees the baby as an elephant, big and
needing much upkeep and unnecessary. On the other hand after she stands up and walks to the other
side we see the opposing point, green lush vegetation, rivers, and rain. This walk across the station
shows Jill s growth and realization of what she wants. Jill stands up and chooses her own destiny. She
clearly wants to keep the baby and has decided to do so. Rain is a global motif of growth and in many
cultures has been seen as a blessing. Likewise bodies of water are seen as the foundation start of
something, most towns and cities

Christian Church And Its Impact On Society
The influence that Churches have created throughout the course of history has greatly impacted lives
of many people. Catholic, protestant, Christian, and Islamic churches have all had an effect towards
the way their people live, think, and behave. Churches in each society have an effect that positively
influences people. When people know that they have a God and savior who is at their side they feel
comfortable, this keeps people together. Many societies base their whole life around their religion.
Their religion is the rulebook, their faith, and their go to when in need of help. The Catholic Church,
Catholic meaning universal is a church with unique practices, beliefs, and traditions compared to the
Christian church. (5) The Catholic Church is the closest related to the Christian Church but is
extremely different when it comes to rules and specific beliefs. The Christian church is more focused
around the belief of followers of Jesus.(1) The Church is centered on the belief that their religion
should be focused on the life and walks of Jesus the Son of God. The Protestant Church is a branch of
Christianity and shares the belief of
2
Jesus. Martin Luther formed the protestant church in 1517. (5) The Roman Catholic Church traces its
history to the Apostles, mainly Peter. The Catholic Church is one of the branches of religions focused
around Christianity. The Catholic Church was founded around the death and resurrection of Jesus
Christ. In the Roman Catholic Church

Sheldon Cooper is a character in the fictional television show, The Big Bang Theory . Sheldon is
extremely knowledgeable and brilliant in the things he knows and is passionate about, but everything
else that doesn t interest him, he completely ignores. Sheldon is a theoretical physicist at Caltech,
having earned his B.S., M.S., M.A., Ph.D., and Sc.D. He lives with his roommate and Caltech
colleague, Leonard Hofstadter, an experimental physicist. Having lived together for 10 years, the two
have become best friends. Leonard often times feels obligated to explain Sheldon s behavior and serve

crying, she responds, Because I m stupid! to which Sheldon responds, That s no reason to cry. One
cries because one is sad. For example, I cry because others are stupid, and that makes me sad. Another
example comes from Sheldon feeling like he is deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize. He is having a
conversation with a former Peace Prize winner, Dr. Smoot, and says, You won the Nobel prize, what,
three years ago? So you must deal with a whole lot of what has Smoot done lately? My thought is we

which Sheldon responds, Fine, Smoot Cooper, what a diva! Sheldon doesn t think that what is saying
is offensive in anyway, because he is too consumed in himself.
Another disorder I would diagnose Sheldon with is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD. People
with OCD have the need for everything to be perfect and having to be in control of everything.
Someone with OCD also does well with lists and schedules and does not like to stray from them.
These characteristics both apply to Sheldon. One thing Sheldon does, that is often seen as comical, is
having a roommate agreement with Leonard. It is essentially a contract that states the protocol for

The Characteristics Of Conformity And Passivity In 20th...
Zachary Aldieri

Conformity and Passivity in 20th Century Literature Through the 20th century, war, technology, and
the capitalism had lasting effects on the overall conformity and passivity of society. Within the novel
Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and the play Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, the general
stagnation, inauthenticity, and cultural malaise are made evident in the main characters actions.
Nonetheless, we are not given an answer regarding whether or not we can reform these flaws. The two
works cause us to reflect on our own human tendency to conform and be passive. Virginia Woolf s
Clarissa Dalloway, for example, is an upper class house wife that spends her days buying flowers and
throwing parties. Beckett s Vladimir and Estragon literally wait for Godot throughout the play without
ever moving from the road on which they sit. Although Woolf s setting is much more detailed than
Beckett s, they both signify the circular life that the main characters in both texts cannot break free
from, leaving humanity trapped by passivity and conformity.
While answers to these cultural iterations of conformity and passivity cannot directly be found in
either Beckett s or Woolf s text, we can turn toward 20th century philosophy for a start to this answer,
specifically the work of Martin Heidegger. Through their literary themes, Becket and Woolf implicitly
give us a glimpse of Heidegger s

Film The Adventures Of Priscill Queen Of The Dessert
Australia is a vast landscape, known for its laid back attitude, beautiful never ending beaches and
snags, but Oz has more to offer than just slang culture. Ever since its colonisation, Australia has
branched off from its European counterpart and grown into a vibrant society that the American dream
could never top. Yet the country isn t nearly as recognised as much as it deserves. Film above all other
forms of Art is one media that has the ability to capture worldwide attention and while Australia has
produced many a singer such as Kylie Minogue, Olivia Newton John and Keith Urban, there humble
beginnings are often forgotten. With great films under their belt like Crocodile Dundee, Mad Max and
Moulin Rouge, it s important that Australian Media and Moving Images are given more attention, in
order to aid the great country s cultural growth.
An example of the quality entertainment that Australia produces can be seen in the 1994 film, The
Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Dessert . The Story follows the journey of two drag queens and
a transsexual woman, played by Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terence Stamp, across the Australian

interchangeable parts? Yes, his cotton gin increased cotton production and interchangeable parts
allowed faster assembly lines. Whitney met Catherine Greene, a widow of a Revolutionary war
veteran and Phineas Miller, a manager of Greene s plantation Mulberry Grove, near Savannah, in
Georgia after accepting an offer to study law there. Greene and Miller addressed the lack of
production for cotton in their plantation. Whitney created the cotton gin

An individual who s influenced by power, control and corruption is often the king that chooses how

The idea of power is shown through symbolism in But in Sydney money buys status and is the
greatest equaliser , the effect of symbolism establishes an idea that money is a currency that forms an
individual s reputation that creates them to be a superior character amongst those who are considered
not of equal value. Further evidence of corruption is occurring in Marele s novel through the use of
idiom and colloquial language in Respectable businessman rub shoulders with bookies, judges, and
high ranking police officers this states that individuals usually support powerful characters with more
authority so they many benefit themselves in terms of power and authority which reflects as an act of
corruption. The use of juxtaposition and imagery in Commissioners are seen in night clubs with well

Theory Of Planned Behavior (TPB)
Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB)
The theory of Planned Behavior built further on the theory of Reasoned Action by Martin Fishben and
Icek Ajzen in 1985. The theory of Reasoned Action needed to be developing because it did not
account specific behaviors, which people has little control or no control over it. Thereon, Ajzen (1998)
added the perceived control notion, which is similar to the self efficacy concept of Social Cognitive
Theory of Bandura (1977). Now, this theory takes to account for factors outside of a person s full
control by perceived behavioral control. Theory of Planned Behavior proves useful for detailing the
psychological processes underlying a wide range of health behavior (Conner and Sparks, 1996; Godin

Intention is influenced by attention, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control (Ajzen, 2006).
Most of the studies have found attitudes to be more important than subjective norms in predicting
intentions, confirming the weak support for the role of subjective norms as compared to attitudes in
predicting intentions (Ajzen, 1991). Attitude is defined as a cognitive process influenced by personal
experiences and is expressed by either behavioral or emotional responses (Fishbein Ajzen, 2010). The
stronger the attitude is toward quitting the better the predictor of one s intention to quit smoking
(Fazio, 2001). According to TPB, the attitude relates both positive and negative beliefs about the
behavior. To addressing the importance of attitude, this leaflet aims to developed positive belief on
individuals that they are capable to quit smoking. Researches put evidence that quitting to smoke
improves quality of life in many ways: psychologically and physically. That is why this leaflet draws
attention on beneficial outcomes of quitting to smoke and emphasize positive effects of it on our life
by targeted attitude with messages, such as Stop smoking! Make a positive difference to your health ,
teeth whiten, breath smells fresher, fertility increase and financial improves and some long term
benefits highlighted as well for example: There lots of benefits of giving up! After 72 hours: Breathing
becomes easier. Energy levels increase. After 2 12 weeks: Circulation improves... On the other hand,
the leaflet targeted negative side of smoking as well. To pointed out the undesirable effects, messages
include how smoking affect on individuals health for example: For a smoker, most of the diseases
occur after the age of 50 and these smoking related illnesses can be long term and fatal , About

A Dinner At Home Is A Great Experience For People
Having dinner at home is supposed to be a great experience for people: being with families, enjoying
hot soup and eating delicious pork. However, in the article The Diner, Bill Trub represents a dinner
experience which is a little weird to readers. The I returns home and has his dinner in a small
restaurant. During the meal, he sees diners who he cannot recognize behave in a strange manner. For
example, a bearded lady yawns. She s eating meatloaf and mash without a knife or fork. Her name is
Rachel, Denise or Chuck. The town is filled with such people with such three uncertain names.
According to a baby grandfather s words, they are all waiting for and welcoming I , whose name is
Bill, Bill, or Bill here, to get back home. In my eyes, the people there are like savages or walking
bodies. Their identities are unclear and they cannot be recognized by others, while they act as if they
are numb, lacking the ability of thinking. The fiction is like an exaggerated model of the real world
where people are in a tendency to be objectified, and I would like to share my opinions on why it
happens and what it will lead to. Nowadays, money is taking a significant part of people s life. To get
money, lots of people objectify others as if they are tools instead of human beings, and ignore their
basic physical and mental needs. Meanwhile, during the process, they are objectifying themselves
also, for they almost become machines designed for making money. But what is it

Unveiling the Truth About Hailsham Essay
Kazuo Ishiguro does an excellent job in explaining the conditions of Hailsham in his book Never Let

what Hailsham really is about. Kathy frequently brings up Hailsham through out the whole book, and
the reader gets the sense that Hailsham played an integral role in the future of her and her classmates
lives. The memories, although sometimes good and bad, cannot be fathomed by most people as being

It is the theme that states the children do not have the right to question their future. But it goes further
than that; the real teaching of Hailsham is to stop the children from questioning anything that is taught
to them at all. It is proved when Kathy expresses surprise at the fact that they had to prove that they
had souls in the first place, and Miss Emily cruelly responds, It s touching, Kathy, to see you so taken
aback. It demonstrates, in a way, that we did our job well (Ishiguro 260). Miss Emily s statements are
highly disturbing, and would be taken offensively by any person that just realized that they have been
manipulated all their lives. However, this is not the case with these children, and by Kathy s lack of
response to that highly provocative statement shows that the children were in fact, abused and
deceived by a school that has no respect for life at all. In a way these children are like pigs led to the
slaughter. The practice of deceit and the conniving structural ways of Hailsham is displayed once
again through a system that Kathy refers to as the Sales (Ishiguro 41). The Sales is a system where the
children got a hold of things from the outside by using their hard earned tokens to purchase these
items (Ishiguro 41). The children would get excited at the sight of the big white van that brought them

Hope In The Film Silver Linings Playbook
Silver lining: a sign of hope in an unfortunate or gloomy situation; a bright prospect ( Silver lining ). It
is an inevitable part of the human life to undergo a challenging circumstance; the way people handle
them varies. There are people who are pessimistic and tend to limit their focus only on the negative
aspects and have little or no hope in an outcome, then there are people who are optimistic and make
light of the situation and remain positive and hopeful that they can overcome the obstacle without
letting it bring them down. The 2012 film Silver Linings Playbook , based off the award winning

Introduction
In this paper, I will summarize the banana trade war between the European Union and the United
States. I will examine the information, explain the argument, and explain the affects this banana war
has had on economies and laborers. I will also investigate Chiquita s role, the US s retaliation,
examine the rules and regulations of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and explain their role in the
dispute. Lastly, I will provide my assessment of the dispute and how I would resolve it acting as a
representative of the WTO. This paper is outlined to answer each task to ensure evidence is provided
to support my findings regarding the banana trade war.
Should the European Union be forced to end this connection with its old colonies, as the United States
have requested, and buy its bananas from other countries as well?
Yes, just as prominent and successful as the European Union s (EU s) stance has been on this industry,
it can all be dismantled and have greater and more far reaching consequences if they do not have to
buy bananas from other countries as well.
The financial stability of the EU, US, multinational companies, and its laborers can be drastically
impacted. The livelihood, jobs and industries, can impact economies. If these other smaller countries
are not taken care of their economies could collapse or they could resort to illegal drug industries,
illegal immigration, and even drug trafficking which causes more harm than good.

The Gas Of Houston Natural Gas
Enron was formed through the merger of Houston Natural Gas of Houston (HNG), Texas and
InterNorth. Houston natural gas covered the Florida and California market, their pipelines running
from east to west and InterNorth catered the Iowa and Minnesota market, their pipelines running from
north to south. HNG was formed in 1920, providing gas to retail customers in Houston. The company
sold its retail gas business in 1920 and ventured into the gas exploration and production business. In
the year 1984, HNG had $3.7 billion in assets, over $2 billion in sales and booked profits of $123
million. InterNorth was a natural pipeline company located in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1984 InterNorth
had revenues of $7.5 billion. The reason behind the merger was that InterNorth faced the threat of a
buyout by corporate raiders as it had low debt and high revenues. The conservative operations and low
debt of InterNorth made it a target for corporate raiders who planned to use its cash reserves and
borrowing capacity to extract funds for themselves. On the other hand HNG Company had borrowed
heavily to expand its pipelines in the Florida and California markets. Therefore merging with Houston
Natural Gas made perfect sense as it fended off corporate raiders. In May 1984 InterNorth acquired
HNG for $2.4 billion, under the leadership of Sam Segnar who was the CEO of InterNorth at that
time. The negotiations for HNG were handled by John Wing and he was able to negotiate a price for

The United States is known to acquire more opportunities and to allow people around the world to
make a better living for themselves and their family. As many migrated over to the U.S., immigrants
found themselves going through economic hard times. The most dramatic turn of the century was
during the 1920s with the emergence of second generation Asian Americans. Although some Asian
Americans were born in their homeland, coming to the U.S. at the age of six still classified them as

live a normal life.
In the book Catching Falling Stars by Karen McCombie, and the T.V series M.A.S.H produced by

In Flanders Fields the soldiers spend their lives fighting for something they believe in but they never
get to see the results of what they ve fought so hard to accomplish. In Memorial Tablet, the soldier
knew that there was more to his life than dying in a war and he s mad because he never gets to
experience the greater side of life which was taken away. Though there are two perspectives that the
soldiers had, they both ended up dying before getting to enjoy life. This proves that the negative
affects of war on soldiers are that they don t get to live a normal life because it s taken away from
them by death.
Another way that war has negative effects is on the safety of civilians. During war, airmen tend to
drop bombs on civilians without thinking of the damage they can cause. In Catching Faling stars , two
children suffer the affects of air raids. They were living in London during a time of war, so they knew
to expect danger. A siren rang warning them of an air raid so they hid in their basement with their
neighbour but it wasn t enough to protect them. When the bomb landed and exploded, they were all
separated from each other. One of the children suffered from a temporary hearing loss and many scars,
while the other sibling also had many scars. Unfortunately their neighbour died. Their mother thought
it would be safer if they were sent to the country as evacuees, but even

Mentoring Programs For A Mentoring Program
In today s volatile business world, it is vital for organizations to engage employees both intellectually
and emotionally. Through mentoring, employees identify themselves as a vital part of the organization
while creating a heightened level of ownership. Mentoring programs are of great value to any
organization. In most cases, these programs are considered essential. By developing and implementing
a mentoring program, the learning process for employees is accelerated. It is said that mentoring can
can accomplish things that training cannot (Johnson). Though, developing a mentoring program is not
an easy task, the benefits outweigh the challenges. A mentoring program will help alleviate high
employee turnover and assist in building a pipeline of diverse employees.
The development of a mentoring program begins by deciding on whether it should be a formal or
informal program. On one hand, a formal mentoring program includes 1. Connection to a strategic
business objective of the organization 2. Established goals 3. Measurable outcomes 4. Expert training
and support 4. Direct organizational benefits and 5. Mentoring engagements lasting 9 12 months (
Business mentoring matters , 2012). On the other hand, an informal mentoring program includes: 1.
Unspecified goals 2. Unknown outcomes 3. Self selection of mentors and mentees 4. No expert
training or support 5. Long term mentorship and 6. Indirect organizational benefits ( Business

Of Mice And Men Character Development
Character Development, Symbolism, Author s Message, Oh My! Of Mice and Men, it is not just a
band! Of Mice and Men was originally a short novel written by John Steinbeck in the 1930s.
Regardless of the shortness in length, though, it is a rather emotional book with quite a few messages
behind the fictional storyline. These messages, however, cannot be discovered right off the bat. To
genuinely absorb the messages the author teaches and genuinely understand the meaning behind them,
one must read the book in its entirety. Steinbeck educates readers about his ideas and messages

Schell S Zero Homeless Family Strategy
Background Homelessness is a societal issues caused from deinstitutionalization, mental illness,
changes in the family structure, economics, violence, and personal crisis. Homelessness is not a local
problem; it is a national (and international) public health crisis. Most statistics show, in fact, that there
are about 8 10,000 individuals living in Seattle (King County) without shelter each and every night.
This may, in fact, be a low estimate, since it is based on one night only, and does not county every area
of the County (Heim, 2009). Within the Greater Seattle Area, many homeless have chronic health
issues. Diabetes is common, often based on alcohol or substance abuse, and over half have some form
of cardiovascular disease, 25% mental health issues. Many have developmental disabilities, and at
least 10% HIV. In 2008, the records reported show that there were over 100 attacks on the homeless,
almost 30 fatal, based on race, religion, or sexual orientation, causing the Seattle City Council to pass
a measure indicating that harassing a homeless person is a hate crime (Ten Year Plan, 2011).
Part 1 Policy Choices Seattle Mayor Paul Schell had a variety of options that were possible mitigating
factors in addressing homelessness in Seattle. The King County Community Homelessness Advisory
Council had already developed strategies that Scholl could use to combat the problem. For example,
the City could improve maintenance, but not increase the existing shelter build out or

Sea Level Rise In Virginia s Tidewater Area
Most people wouldn t pay any mind to care about coastal resilience and the sea level rise in the
Tidewater area of Virginia. However, they are very important to the community and its development.
In the past I was one of those people as well until I knew how much the Tidewater area could be
affected by an extreme weather storm or pipe malfunction. Growing up in Virginia Beach I ve always
questioned why the houses in Virginia didn t have basements. Because Virginia s elevation is
approximately 5,729 feet, the average elevation is 12 feet above sea level, it s considered below sea
level. The Tidewater area in Virginia is known for flooding when there are rain storms or other serious
weather conditions as well. This is not only because of Virginia s elevation level, but also because of
the sewage and waste system. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The sea levels are rising due to the compaction of the groundwater withdrawals, post glaciation
settling, and the effects from the meteor crater in the Chesapeake Bay. The sea levels are slowly rising
in present day but with the hurricanes and nor easters they help aid in making those levels rise faster
of a period of time. If the climate warmed two degrees, the sea levels will rise which will cause the
beaches to erode and create flooding. Due to sea levels rising, about 13.1 million people in Virginia
will be displaced and approximately two billion people in the world. Coastal resilience is the

ponder the question of their purpose in life. This is simply because purpose is the sole reason for
existence, so a person must contemplate the question in order to go about their days. And everybody
that has gone looking for the answer, has come back empty handed. The universe allows for life but it
doesn t leave the slightest clue as to why it was provided. It s true that if a person looks to the

Persuasive Essay On Child Circumcision
Imagine you are in hospital room somewhere in Malaysia. A young girl timidly toddles in with her
mother, and is soon restrained by her mother and a medical attendant while her genitals are cut against
her will. This will ensure that her body is cleaner, her mother has been conditioned to think. It will
also make her daughter s genitals look more aesthetically pleasing. After the procedure has been
completed, the girl lay there suffering in pain, and the doctor proudly announces to her mother,
Congratulations! Her circumcision is finished! As appalling as it is to imagine this scenario, thousands
of American newborns go through this trauma every day; simply change the gender from girl to boy.
Routine infant circumcision (RIC) is described as the nonreligious elective removal of the prepuce of
the penis in the days following birth, [and] is the most common surgery performed in the United
States. (Mitchell and Beal)
Although circumcision is thought to be one of the oldest procedures in the world, the manner in which
American doctors perform it is relatively new. Unbeknownst to most modern day Americans,
circumcision wasn t widely practiced in the country until about 1910. As a matter of fact, none of our
founding fathers, including Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, were circumcised! Americans
tend to be dumbfounded when they learn that about 80 percent of the world s population do not
practice circumcision, nor have they ever done so. (Wallerstein) We are, in

Nurse Karen advises patients with respiratory diseases to stay indoors to avoid any respiratory irritants
the fire is causing. Many of the public health care teams in Neighborhood were playing catch up after
the fire had been raging for days. The hospital in Neighborhood failed to call a code yellow. Initiating
a code yellow would have alerted the emergency response team to action to help accommodate the
influx of patients the health care facilities were facing. Because of the failure to call the code yellow,
the staff is overworked and is causing added stress on the hospital staff on the floor, the emergency
room, and throughout the hospital. If a state of emergency were called, more staff as well as room for
patients would have been made available, thus decreasing stress the staff is feeling. Because the forest
fire was raging out of control close to the city, the science fair should have either been canceled or
rescheduled until the fire was put out and the threat gone. Public service announcements should have
been broadcast alerting residents of the fire and the health hazards they could face. Residents should
have been warned to stay indoors and to only go outside if necessary. Luckily, most residents stayed
indoors, or else there would have been an even larger number of patients in the emergency room.

The influx of children to the United States from Central America and how the U.S. is handling it
Between 1st October, 2013 and 31 July, 2014, the United States Customs and Border Protection

To adopt and to be adopted ¨The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect

(Bach) When you ask most people about adoption they usually think of all the stereotypical
misconception like adoption is to challenging for me most of those kids have too many medical or
mental problems for me, or that costs way too much. That is the response most people give when they

The problem and we need to deal with it, but we have to have perspective and forming a family can
take time. Every way of forming a family can be painful and have its difficulties. In adoption, we don t
have miscarriage, we have other issues, but we have to have some perspective about our own lives and
our own families. (Pertman). All though adoption is painless because you don t have to go through
labor it still could cause you some pain in the process if you get a child with a disability or just a child
who is more challenging. Children who are older tend to be more challenging this is often a big
misconception. When most people think of a older child in foster care or the adoption agencies they
usually think of a kid who is to troubled so nobody wanted them, but when a older kid is in the system
that usually means that they have no one to take care of them. This leads to them trying to act out not
because they are too difficult but because they want someone to care for them or about them. These
kids just need someone who can care for them because most of the time those kids have never had
anyone to care for them. People often think that the adoption process often discriminates against

bureaucracy and violence: they are inhuman resources in the eyes of their blindly ambitious superior

Always looking for a way out, Yossarian claims that he is insane, only to find out that by claiming that

is insane in order to avoid flying bombing missions. Elsewhere, Catch 22 is defined as a law that is
illegal to read. Ironically, the place where it is written that it is illegal is in Catch 22 itself. It is yet
again defined as the law that the enemy is allowed to do anything that one can t keep him from doing.

Design Management Is Necessary For A Successful Project...
Critical appraisal
Design is the process whereby the attributes of a client are developed and documented so that they can
be procured. It is very important stage in the design procurement process and has a major pressure on
the outcome of the project. Lot of concentration is paid to overall project management, as evidenced
by techniques developed over the last 15 years. This critical view examines the particular nature of
design management process and the concrete issues that should to be considered in order to establish
the felicitous controls.
In recent years there has been an improved development for the need of design management in
construction. Effective design management is necessary for a successful project but the clear picture
of design management is not understood properly (S Austin, 2002). Design is a very key aspect of
construction and with the help of a good team; good sustainable projects can be produced. The need
for improvement of design in construction is very necessary. Delivering the project on time, budget
and providing a value to construction is needed (S Austin, 2002). However the role of a design
manager is poorly noted and does not have a robust path (Newton, n.d.).
Design management Dates back to early times where it was influenced with number of different
attributes like architecture, software development, engineering. During the 1960 design management

Branding Theory Essay

Programme: International Marketing
Introduction
This essay will attempt to describe and explain how organizations use branding theory and practice to
help develop, establish and maintain their positions in both existing and potential markets. To do so it
will be structured into four chapters that will be supported by examples:
1. What is a brand and why they matter.
2. How to develop a brand.
3. How to establish and maintain a brand.
4. How to develop establish and maintain brands in existing and potential markets.
What is a brand and why they matter
What is a brand? According to the American Marketing Association (AMA) a brand is a name, term,
sign, symbol, or design, or a combination of them, intended to identify the goods and services of one
seller or group of sellers and to differentiate them from those of competition (AMA, 2004). These
identifiable elements are called brand elements.
According to Robert Scott, author of Fighting the brand wars, a brand is any name, logo, phrase, or
slogan that sticks with the public and evokes a particular product or service (Scott, 2002).
Brands evolve and over time they have become part of our everyday life and have left the traditional
notion of being what represented a company or product name. From the 1366 Stella Artois logo that is
still being used to the 2004 action camera GoPro that uses its customers as branding ambassadors all

Determinism And Neoplatonism
In a remote medieval village, a child is born. Unfortunately, the local priest soon claims him to be
destined to an afterlife in Purgatory; no amount of virtuous action, charity, or veneration can save the
child from his fate. While certainly a hyperbole, such an event is not a far cry from the religious
beliefs of medieval Europe. During this period, the prevailing belief of the time was a deterministic
and cynical view of human nature. Pope Innocent III describes how ...man was formed out of earth,
conceived in guilt, born to punishment... he will become fuel for eternal fires food for worms, a mass
of rottenness (De Segni 1). Under the belief of the time, humans were thought to be predestined to
their fate; this deterministic view of human potential or lack thereof was characteristic of the medieval
era. The turning point in this belief was the emergence of humanism in the 14th and 15th centuries. As
the name suggests, humanism emphasized the malleability and perfectibility of man, as well as a
rediscovery of antiquity. Determinism became ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Neoplatonism represented a turn away from the practical concerns of civic humanists to an
exploration of the grand ideals of truth and perfection (Chambers 397). Pico della Mirandola believed
the universe to be ordered in a hierarchy, with every being in the universe holding a compulsion to
seek perfection. These ideals, along with other ideals of Neoplatonism, were extremely prevalent
within Pico della Mirandola s work. One of Pico della Mirandola s most influential works, Oration on
the Dignity of Man, promoted many of his ideas and those of Neoplatonism; Pico s Oration is
commonly referred to as ...the Manifesto of the Renaissance [and] is widely regarded as a beautiful
declaration of the greatness of human freedom and ability (Truglia 158). Two ideas are central to the
Oration: free will and the deification of

Post-Tbi Case Studies
It is evident that there are some solid data for the cause of AI due to TBI along with refuting data as
well. The largest discrepancy among investigating AI in TBI patients, was the varying definitions of
what constituted as AI. As stated in the results section, these measurements and tests included, but not
limited to, baseline cortisol readings, and varying ACTH stimulation tests. It seems that those
investigators who chose to use a baseline cortisol measurement as opposed to stimulation tests,
gathered more data in support of AI post TBI. Heather et al showed a stimulation test referred to as the
metyrapone test. This test not only measures the potential increase in a cortisol level of the patient, but
also causes the shunting of endocrine products to make more cortisol due to inhibiting the further
progression of precursors to other hormones such as sex hormones. This type of stimulation test was
not found in other articles that were reviewed for this paper. It would be helpful to see how often and
how beneficial a test such as the metyrapone test is over a possible standard ACTH stimulation test
(high or low dose). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems that the low dose ACTH test was more sensitive in diagnosing AI post TBI, possibly even
with an over diagnosing of this insufficiency. (Mirzaie, et al., 2013) The high dose ACTH test also had
differing results depending on when the samples were taken from the patients; 30 min or 60 min post
administration. A 60min sample seemed to have given the strongest correlation between TBI and a
resulting AI in the patient. (Bernard, Outtrim, Menon, Matta,

Thank You For Smoking Ethical Quotes
True success can only be achieved should one be able to accept their way of life despite the views and
criticism of others. In the novel Thank You For Smoking written by Christopher Buckley, the novel
centers around Nick Naylor, a spokesman for a tobacco company, infamous for his unethical methods
in the way he performs. As ruthless as he seems, however, it is due to this type of character that
Naylor is able to come out on top and become the successful man he is today. Using Nick Naylor,
Buckley demonstrates how humans are able to achieve the success they desire, but only if they are
able to act on their own accord to do so. By following through decisions that are decided by oneself
rather than the surrounding infleuences, one is able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using Nick Naylor, Buckley shows how ones character does not define their chances of success, but is
rather based on the actions they take in order to do so by using that character. Despite the harsh view
of society, Naylor shows that he is able to achieve success by acting on his own accord due to his
character and make decisions based off that no matter how underhanded they may seem. He does not
let any influences impact his decisions whether that be society, his superiors, or even the law. As a
result, he remains strong willed throughout his life in order to reach the new heights he desires.
Therefore, if one is to pursue the path towards success, then they should be able to act based on their
own accord and disregard the influences that may prevent that from

William Wordsworth s `` A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal ``
Poems Assignment William Wordsworth is a British Romanticist that is born in Cockermouth in the
Lake District of England in 1770. In the year 1795 he moved with his sister Dorothy Wordsworth to
Dorset in the Lake District near his friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge. These two people in the life of
William Wordsworth have played an important role in his works, particularly in the Lucy Poems .
Wordsworth wrote a series of poems that revolves around the existence of a certain Lucy which
identity was never known or revealed by Wordsworth himself. William Wordsworth is considered as
one of the pillars that shaped early English Romantic movement. (Staroň 4) and the most recognized
romantic poems that he wrote is the Lucy poems. The Lucy poems contains five series of poems
entitled A slumber did my spirit seal , She dwelt among the untrodden ways , Strange fits of passion
have I known , Three years she grew in sun and shower and I travelled among unknown men which
were arranged in a series by poem experts that studied Wordsworth poems. For this paper we would
only be focusing on two poems the She dwelt among the untrodden ways and the I travelled among
unknown men as we examine their themes and content. A theory for She dwelt among the untrodden
ways is that it was written to represent an attempt to give literary expression and distance to
Wordsworth s feeling of affection for his sister. (MacGillivray) But this was never proven as the
character of Lucy was

Comparing Two Slave Stories
Both the slave narratives have a few components that comes down to outlining the misery of the black
race under white supremacists for slavery. The stories have the same comparable qualities, for
example, social stratification in wording or racial lines, unfair treatment, for example, being put
through purposeful misusing of sustenance, constrained work, oppression and in addition misuse of
human rights and stripping of nobility from being beaten while exposed. The significant distinction
between the two stories is the generally drilled sexual misuse of ladies in the Incidents in the Life of a
Slave Girl. Dissimilar to men, the ladies are compelled to have babies with their white masters and in
successive cases the conceived newborn child is

My Week As A Business Analyst
My Week As A Business Analyst
My week as a Business Analyst was a very eye opening and educational experience. The reason I
chose to job shadow a Business Analyst is because I wanted to learn more about a career in
Information Technology. My mentor has over twelve years experience as a Business Analyst in the
area of Quality Management and Regulatory Affairs for a medical device company. I wasn t sure what
to expect because I had never been exposed to this kind of environment. However, I was eager to learn
about the functions of an IT Business Analyst. In addition, I was really looking forward to the
opportunity of exploring other areas of the company.

A meeting needed to be scheduled with the customer who was located in Ireland. In addition, there is a
change control process that is used when creating and completing any new development. This change
control process is based on requests from the business. Then, procedures must be followed to
implement these requests.
Most requests follow a general guideline and a series of steps. The first step of the change control
process is to identify what must be changed and document those changes. The second step is to
validate the change with management approval. The third step is to analyze how long it will take, how
much it will cost, and how the change will impact the current software design. The fourth step is
control which is the deciding factor on whether you want to proceed with the change. The fifth step is
action which includes documenting and implementing the changes. The sixth and final step is to verify
that all documentation is complete and close the request.
During my week of job shadowing, I saw all of these steps being completed and learned about the
process. The company used a software tool for the change control process called Remedy. This is a
software that is in compliance with guidelines set by the FDA. (Federal Government) The changes
themselves were implemented in the SAP software.
There is a lot involved in documenting the action step in the change control process. There are

Sonny s Blues Analysis Essay
It s repulsive to think you have to suffer that much (Baldwin 132). Many would argue that in life, pain
outweighs pleasure. Freud contends that although we are unable to reconcile with the truth because it
frightens us, each and every one of us has an unconscious desire to die. Death, according to Freud, is
the ultimate escape from the sufferings and hardships which define human life and reality. In Sonny s
Blues, James Baldwin confronts this dark truth about human nature in his character, Sonny. Sonny s
suffering becomes so unbearable that he refuses to accept it as an inevitable condition of the human
experience; he refuses to take it : But nobody just takes it, Sonny cried, That s what I m telling you!
Everybody tries not to (Baldwin 133). Rather than directly embrace death, Sonny seeks relief and
control in other, alternative forms. At first, Sonny ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The more one becomes dependent on a drug like heroin, the more control one relinquishes to the drug
itself. Eventually, Sonny is no longer in control, but rather the heroin and the people who provide it.
This becomes a gateway for even more suffering and pain. Luckily for Sonny, he has found an
alternative to this downward spiraling phenomena in music. But the man who creates the music is
hearing something else, is dealing with the roar rising from the void and imposing order on it as it hits
the air (Baldwin 137). Through his piano, Sonny is able to grasp the chaos within and impose an
empirical order on it by translating it into musical notes. Sonny s escape into music then becomes the
conscious representation of the unconscious death instinct. By imposing order, Sonny is decreasing his
amount of suffering, and therefore moving towards peace and rest. The words of Sonny s brother,
upon hearing his jazz, are a testament to the power of music to transport us from the hardships of
everyday

The search for answers continues to present day as seen in Ernest Hemingway s short story Hills like White Elephants; is picking an undesired outcome over another undesired outcome truly free will? Hemingway uses vivid imagery and metaphors to convey complex ideas and thoughts. In the story the reader is introduced to a battle of wills and finding true freedom. Is one characters will more valid or important than another s, will they lose their freedom or gain it by choosing an outcome. The Ebro Valley conveys the story itself and opposing viewpoint. Shallow and barren view of freedom, or the lush green landscape that comes from choice. Jill looks out the window and sees the barren deserted hill first, a symbol of her current state and feeling with the american. She has no choice over her life and thus feels empty. In turn she states, They look like white elephants, she said. (Hemingway 475) Such allusion created a feeling of an elephant in the room. Kenneth Johnson states; The hills like white elephants also serve to remind one of the couple s conflicting views on abortion. A white elephant, in one meaning of the term, is anything rare, expensive, and difficult to keep; any burdensome possession; an object no longer esteemed by its owner though not without value to others. (Johnson 233 238). This elephant is the baby, the American sees the baby as an elephant, big and needing much upkeep and unnecessary. On the other hand after she stands up and walks to the other side we see the opposing point, green lush vegetation, rivers, and rain. This walk across the station shows Jill s growth and realization of what she wants. Jill stands up and chooses her own destiny. She clearly wants to keep the baby and has decided to do so. Rain is a global motif of growth and in many cultures has been seen as a blessing. Likewise bodies of water are seen as the foundation start of something, most towns and cities ... Catholic, protestant, Christian, and Islamic churches have all had an effect towards the way their people live, think, and behave. Churches in each society have an effect that positively influences people. When people know that they have a God and savior who is at their side they feel comfortable, this keeps people together. Many societies base their whole life around their religion. Their religion is the rulebook, their faith, and their go to when in need of help. The Catholic Church, Catholic meaning universal is a church with unique practices, beliefs, and traditions compared to the Christian church. (5) The Catholic Church is the closest related to the Christian Church but is extremely different when it comes to rules and specific beliefs. The Christian church is more focused around the belief of followers of Jesus.(1) The Church is centered on the belief that their religion should be focused on the life and walks of Jesus the Son of God. People with OCD have the need for everything to be perfect and having to be in control of everything. Someone with OCD also does well with lists and schedules and does not like to stray from them. These characteristics both apply to Sheldon. One thing Sheldon does, that is often seen as comical, is having a roommate agreement with Leonard. • 6. The Characteristics Of Conformity And Passivity In 20th... Zachary Aldieri Professor Illuzzi DWC 202 11/24/2017 Conformity and Passivity in 20th Century Literature Through the 20th century, war, technology, and the capitalism had lasting effects on the overall conformity and passivity of society. Within the novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and the play Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, the general stagnation, inauthenticity, and cultural malaise are made evident in the main characters actions. Nonetheless, we are not given an answer regarding whether or not we can reform these flaws. The two works cause us to reflect on our own human tendency to conform and be passive. Virginia Woolf s Clarissa Dalloway, for example, is an upper class house wife that spends her days buying flowers and throwing parties. Beckett s Vladimir and Estragon literally wait for Godot throughout the play without ever moving from the road on which they sit. Although Woolf s setting is much more detailed than Beckett s, they both signify the circular life that the main characters in both texts cannot break free from, leaving humanity trapped by passivity and conformity. While answers to these cultural iterations of conformity and passivity cannot directly be found in either Beckett s or Woolf s text, we can turn toward 20th century philosophy for a start to this answer, specifically the work of Martin Heidegger. Through their literary themes, Becket and Woolf implicitly give us a glimpse of Heidegger s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, in the article The Diner, Bill Trub represents a dinner experience which is a little weird to readers. The I returns home and has his dinner in a small restaurant. In the year 1984, HNG had $3.7 billion in assets, over $2 billion in sales and booked profits of $123 million. InterNorth was a natural pipeline company located in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1984 InterNorth had revenues of $7.5 billion. The reason behind the merger was that InterNorth faced the threat of a buyout by corporate raiders as it had low debt and high revenues. The conservative operations and low debt of InterNorth made it a target for corporate raiders who planned to use its cash reserves and borrowing capacity to extract funds for themselves. On the other hand HNG Company had borrowed heavily to expand its pipelines in the Florida and California markets. Therefore merging with Houston Natural Gas made perfect sense as it fended off corporate raiders. In May 1984 InterNorth acquired HNG for $2.4 billion, under the leadership of Sam Segnar who was the CEO of InterNorth at that time. The negotiations for HNG were handled by John Wing and he was able to negotiate a price for HNG shares which were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Design Management Is Necessary For A Successful Project... Critical appraisal Design is the process whereby the attributes of a client are developed and documented so that they can be procured. It is very important stage in the design procurement process and has a major pressure on the outcome of the project. Lot of concentration is paid to overall project management, as evidenced by techniques developed over the last 15 years. This critical view examines the particular nature of design management process and the concrete issues that should to be considered in order to establish the felicitous controls. In recent years there has been an improved development for the need of design management in construction. Effective design management is necessary for a successful project but the clear picture of design management is not understood properly (S Austin, 2002). Design is a very key aspect of construction and with the help of a good team; good sustainable projects can be produced. The need for improvement of design in construction is very necessary. Delivering the project on time, budget and providing a value to construction is needed (S Austin, 2002). However the role of a design manager is poorly noted and does not have a robust path (Newton, n.d.). How to develop establish and maintain brands in existing and potential markets. What is a brand and why they matter What is a brand? According to the American Marketing Association (AMA) a brand is a name, term, sign, symbol, or design, or a combination of them, intended to identify the goods and services of one seller or group of sellers and to differentiate them from those of competition (AMA, 2004). These identifiable elements are called brand elements. According to Robert Scott, author of Fighting the brand wars, a brand is any name, logo, phrase, or slogan that sticks with the public and evokes a particular product or service (Scott, 2002). • 43. Determinism And Neoplatonism In a remote medieval village, a child is born. Unfortunately, the local priest soon claims him to be destined to an afterlife in Purgatory; no amount of virtuous action, charity, or veneration can save the child from his fate. While certainly a hyperbole, such an event is not a far cry from the religious beliefs of medieval Europe. During this period, the prevailing belief of the time was a deterministic and cynical view of human nature. Pope Innocent III describes how ...man was formed out of earth, conceived in guilt, born to punishment... he will become fuel for eternal fires food for worms, a mass of rottenness (De Segni 1). Under the belief of the time, humans were thought to be predestined to their fate; this deterministic view of human potential or lack thereof was characteristic of the medieval era. The turning point in this belief was the emergence of humanism in the 14th and 15th centuries. As the name suggests, humanism emphasized the malleability and perfectibility of man, as well as a rediscovery of antiquity. Determinism became ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These ideals, along with other ideals of Neoplatonism, were extremely prevalent within Pico della Mirandola s work. • 44. Post-Tbi Case Studies It is evident that there are some solid data for the cause of AI due to TBI along with refuting data as well. The largest discrepancy among investigating AI in TBI patients, was the varying definitions of what constituted as AI. As stated in the results section, these measurements and tests included, but not limited to, baseline cortisol readings, and varying ACTH stimulation tests. It seems that those investigators who chose to use a baseline cortisol measurement as opposed to stimulation tests, gathered more data in support of AI post TBI. Heather et al showed a stimulation test referred to as the metyrapone test. This test not only measures the potential increase in a cortisol level of the patient, but also causes the shunting of endocrine products to make more cortisol due to inhibiting the further progression of precursors to other hormones such as sex hormones. This type of stimulation test was not found in other articles that were reviewed for this paper. It would be helpful to see how often and how beneficial a test such as the metyrapone test is over a possible standard ACTH stimulation test (high or low dose). ... A 60min sample seemed to have given the strongest correlation between TBI and a resulting AI in the patient. (Bernard, Outtrim, Menon, Matta, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the novel Thank You For Smoking written by Christopher Buckley, the novel centers around Nick Naylor, a spokesman for a tobacco company, infamous for his unethical methods in the way he performs. As ruthless as he seems, however, it is due to this type of character that Naylor is able to come out on top and become the successful man he is today. • 50. Sonny s Blues Analysis Essay It s repulsive to think you have to suffer that much (Baldwin 132). Many would argue that in life, pain outweighs pleasure. Freud contends that although we are unable to reconcile with the truth because it frightens us, each and every one of us has an unconscious desire to die. Death, according to Freud, is the ultimate escape from the sufferings and hardships which define human life and reality. In Sonny s Blues, James Baldwin confronts this dark truth about human nature in his character, Sonny. Sonny s suffering becomes so unbearable that he refuses to accept it as an inevitable condition of the human experience; he refuses to take it : But nobody just takes it, Sonny cried, That s what I m telling you! Everybody tries not to (Baldwin 133). Rather than directly embrace death, Sonny seeks relief and control in other, alternative forms. At first, Sonny ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The more one becomes dependent on a drug like heroin, the more control one relinquishes to the drug itself. Eventually, Sonny is no longer in control, but rather the heroin and the people who provide it. This becomes a gateway for even more suffering and pain. Luckily for Sonny, he has found an alternative to this downward spiraling phenomena in music. But the man who creates the music is hearing something else, is dealing with the roar rising from the void and imposing order on it as it hits the air (Baldwin 137). Through his piano, Sonny is able to grasp the chaos within and impose an empirical order on it by translating it into musical notes. Sonny s escape into music then becomes the conscious representation of the unconscious death instinct. By imposing order, Sonny is decreasing his amount of suffering, and therefore moving towards peace and rest. The words of Sonny s brother, upon hearing his jazz, are a testament to the power of music to transport us from the hardships of everyday ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
