Swedish Food In Northern Europe
So what exactly is Swedish food? Many may think of fish and Swedish meatballs. Scandinavia is
a part of Northern Europe surrounded by the Baltic Sea; this includes Sweden, Finland, and
Norway. Knowing the history of the region explains a lot about the foods that still exist there
today. Vikings who inhabited the area were some of the first people to develop food preservation
methods. By salting, dehydrating, and curing the fruits, vegetables, meats, and fish, the warriors
were able to spend less time hunting and gathering, and more time invading territories as far south
as the Mediterranean. Since they traveled so far, cooking influences from all over Europe are still
apparent in the modern Swedish diet. This includes German pastries, French soups, and English
teas.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It means bread and butter table, although not such an accurate translation of the word Swedes use
for a buffet of small dishes. This entirely describes the usual Christmas with my family.
Traditionally, a smörgåsbord would consist of different types of fish like smoked salmon,
herring, and lutefisk (reserved for Christmas only), meats such as beef and even moose, vegetables,
new potatoes, and of course, breads and cheeses. During lunch, it is common to see
smörgåstårta on this table also. Smörgåstårta literally translates to sandwich cake, which is
exactly what it is. This is a double layer cake (made with three large, round pieces of bread) filled
with everything a sandwich might have in it. This might be a little lazy, but they definitely know

Racism In John Updike s Rabbit Run And Rabbit Redwell
John Updike has written many novels. One of his most famous series is called Rabbit Omnibus.
John Updike is known for his famous character in the Rabbit Omnibus books called Harry. John
Updike s books called Rabbit Run and Rabbit Redux shows us racism, theme, and character change.
First, in Rabbit Run and Rabbit Redux we see racism. In Rabbit Redux , it says, Now here s how.
You is a Big Black man sittin right there. You is chained to the chained to that chair. And I is
white as snow (296). This quote in the story shows how they like to play games involving
slavery. Racism is a big issue in both books. Readers can see this throughout the books with the
different characters. The quote is one character talking to the other. Another quote showing
racism in Rabbit Redux is I don t follow this racist rap, you can t turn on television now without
black face spitting at you (47). In the book several times we see Rabbit saying there are too many
blacks. The racism is not as bad in Rabbit Redux as in Rabbit Run . Between the two books, readers
can see different sides of John Updike s writing styles. In one book, he uses harsher words and
more racist words than the other book. Both of these books include elements of racism.
Second, in Rabbit Run and Rabbit Redux we see that the themes are kind of the same. The theme in
both novels involves them struggling with something in their life. In Rabbit Redux the theme is
Freedom. Rabbit wants freedom from his

There has been no talk about habitat preservation or restoration but there are various laws and
policies in many Southeast Asian countries protecting the white winged wood duck. There have not
been many attempts to release the white winged wood duck from the captive breeding programs
back into the wild. The current plans to save the organism are just to hope that the laws in place
will protect the ducks, but that is not working well so far. There have been many materials talking
about protecting endangered species, such as the Cairina scutulata, distributed in countries like
Laos and Cambodia. Some other nearby countries like India have sanctuaries for these ducks. Some
of the things that have been suggested that could save the organism are things like enforcing the
hunting laws, actually monitoring the Cairina scutulata population, protection of swamp forests,
and campaigning against oil and pesticide pollution. It is assumed that actually following through
on the suggested ideas will drastically increase the Cairina scutulata population because they will

Modernization Of The Hawaiian Islands
The state of Hawaii, also known collectively as the Hawaiian Islands, has a long history regarding
its development. From migration, to the development of producing goods as a way of bartering, to
an eventual governed society, the modernization of Hawaii has an illustrious history. The people
who impacted this and were part of creating a globalized look at Hawaiiplayed a part into
modernization the state. This paper will illustrate the modernization of this land and its
westernization throughout the years.
The modern origins of these islands start not from the migration of the Asian people from other
various islands, but with the discovery by an Englishmen named Captain Cook. With his ship,
The Resolution, as well as The Discovery; Cook stumbles upon the islands of Kauai and Oahu on
January 18, 1778. The exchange of goods amongst the native Hawaiians showed promise, but this
barter and friendly spirit did not last; as on his second visit to the islands in 1779 was unfortunate
timing which led to his death . Following Cook s death there was a period of migration to the
Hawaiian Islands which started when some of the crew from Cook s ships decided to stay behind.
The movement of trade to the Hawaiian Islands created a rift between the native people, and the
foreigners. As fur trade in China became such a big industry, Hawaii became stopping ground or
port for these trade ships. This eventually led to an increase in the amount of foreigners, making up
majority of the

Tim Winton The Turning Summary
Masculinity, the attributes applied to the male gender, has continuously manifested itself within the
matrices of literature, with many writers using narrative fiction as a vehicle to explore ideas of the
historical underpinnings of manhood, and more generally, alternative constructions of the male
ontology and modality. Transcendental notions of masculinityhave inevitably constrained the
contemporary manwithin set ideologies and values those which often enforce unrealistic and toxic
expectations. This conundrum is especially relevant in Australian society given the stereotypical
and diffused archetype of the Aussie Man ; which characteristics such as apathy, nobility and
strength forming the bedrock of the national identity. Tim Winton, a prominent Australian author,
has recognised and highlighted this issue in his collection of short stories The Turning, effectively
challenging timeless stereotypes and portraying distinctive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Vic Lang, one of the central characters, is arguably most affected by the constraints society places
on gender succumbing to romanticised ideologies.
Hence, Winton utilises the character to represent the typical male, whilst also exploring the
underbelly of a conforming male s wellbeing. Vic is symbolic of the detrimental effects maladaptive
masculinity can have on a young boys development, as he exhibits emotional instability.
In Damaged Goods , his wife Gail explains that he, displaying that Vic has rehearsed the ideology
of a man s apathy and lack of emotion.
Although he is clearly troubled by his past and unable to let go of aspects of it, he remains rigid
and distance in adulthood. Vic s psychological fragility is thus often explained by female
characters. Here, Winton simultaneously provides an external perspective and challenges the lack
of rapport and self expression within the domains of

Instances like this one where a pop star dies from something they have brought themselves into
overshadows any other important news. A prime example is how Whitney Houston s daughter
Bobby Kristina Brown who passed away through the same means and received the same attention
as Whitney. It is easy to understand why society praises pop stars because they want to live the
lavish life of money, riches and no worries. This can also go back to the sense of individuality pop
stars have compared to military members. It is very easy for someone in Whitney s position to be
very unique and recognizable compared to Lt. Murphy. These reasons are why the majority of
people give more recognitions to Whitney but, it does not make the situation acceptable. Although
social influences and un moral urges should not fully dictate our thoughts it seems that they have.

Love in Poetry Essay
Love in Poetry
The course of true love never did run smoothly, (William
Shakespeare.) How far do you think the three poems you have read conform to this view?
Throughout history love has been a favoured theme with many poets in their writing. Carol Ann
Duffy, (born 1958) tackles the issue of lovein her poem Valentine, as does Percy Bysshe Shelly
(1792 1822) in the poem Love s Philosophy, and finally Robert Burns (1759 1796) considers the
topic in A Red Red Rose. As different poets throughout history have written about the topic it is not
surprising that all three contain different and contrasting messages and viewpoints. It is clear that
with the passage of time, views have become more pessimistic or some may say ... Show more

These aspects contribute to the poem giving an overall impression that love is everlasting and also
holds the world together in a unifying way.
These previous images also enforce Burns message that love lasts, survives and can be relied on.
Burns suggests love will last till a the seas gang dry. This is physically impossible and through this
Burns is suggesting that love is so powerful that it can defy the laws of physics. Through this
Burns also implies that love can surmount boundaries of space and time, the seas gang dry . This
finally enforces that love is an enduring power and will never fade.
The title A Red Red Rose further implements Burns messages that the course of true love does
run smoothly. The red rose is a typical symbol of love and therefore Burns is suggesting, perhaps
naively, that love is a clear and simple path to follow in life. The title also suggests that Burns
feels love should be celebrated and life should be lived to the full. The title also alerts the reader to
the fact that Burns is addressing the traditional aspects of love.
The poem has a regular structure throughout and strong rhyme. Burns has written the poem in this
way in an attempt to portray love as a strong force, which can be depended on. Burns has also
included alternate line rhyme throughout the poem. This

Fried Green Tomatoes Themes
Fried Green Tomatoes, a film directed by Jon Avnet based on the novel Fried green Tomatoes
written by Fannie Flagg, made me reflect on three main themes that were interwoven throughout the
movie. The main theme being abuse and how cruelly humans can be towards others and the utmost
of having friendships that are based on loyalty, trust, honesty, and most importantly the ability to be
resilient and take control of self and situations when faced with difficulties that could cloud our
judgements and our decisions. The filmweaves several forms of human cruelty and discrimination
through the plot. The strong southern faith and its strong ties to the church show and the two faces

The slavery in the South, didn t officially end until December the 6th 1865. Although this film

Information Assurance Is Important For Our Future Business...
As web technology usage increase for businesses so does the need for security. Our web presence
here at Information Assurance is very important to the growth of the business. Our webservers are
a crucial element of our web infrastructure and a single vulnerability can lead to a security breach
which can affect Information Assurance s creditability. Which is why we must have webserver
security a high priority for our growing business. Our webserver hosts our websiteover the internet
for client interact. We must keep this interaction safe and secure so we don t face the same issues
we suffered from in 2001 with denial of service attacks and the defacement of our website.
Attackers abuse vulnerabilities within the software of webservers to compromise our website
security. We have network security measures in place such as our firewall but we still need to
strengthen our webservers which can be access from anywhere as long as there is an internet
connection. (Kumar) Strengthening our web server security will help protect against known
vulnerabilities that bypass the firewall system and can compromise our web applications.
In a recent study 75% of cyber attacks are caused by taking advantage of vulnerabilities in web
application and webservers. With 57.9% of webserver market share being Apache servers and only
13.2% are Microsoft IIS, we are at high risk of our servers being compromised by attackers. Our
Apache server handles our HTTP request and responses from our clients.

As a result of the mosquitoes physically being able to occupy a different vector, certain diseases
also begin to expand to occupy that vector as well. As stated by an article about the population
dynamics of mosquitoes, global changes . . . lead to an extension of the distribution areas of certain

mosquitoes shift the vector of where they live as a result of this global warming, they bring what

Crime In The Inner City
What ever happened to the mentality that it takes a village to raise a child? So often in today s
society we see violence on the news, and tend to shake our heads in disgust. Yet, as long as it

Reverend Jeff Obafemi Carr not only sees there is a growing problem of violent crimes in poverty
stricken communities, but he wants to make a difference. He established Build a Center, Heal a

Gun Control Laws Limit Violent Crime
Founding Father Benjamin Franklin once said that, Those who can give up essential liberty to
obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. The great American republic
was founded on the principle of liberty for all. The Bill of Rights, which is a pillar of US
democracy, clearly stipulates that all citizens have the right to bear arms. It is senseless to sacrifice
this fundamental right for a false illusion of safety. We can reference previous periods of history in
which the government placed restrictions on products and examine how ineffective they were.
Furthermore, we can look at the absence of a correlation between strict gun control measures and
reducing violent crimerates in US states. It is time to ensure that our Constitution is upheld to
protect the ideals of American democracy. The proposal of restricting US citizens from purchasing
firearms is invalid because they are protected to do so under the Constitution, strict government
regulations on other harmful products have not been effective in the past, and the idea that gun
control laws limit violent crimeis a misconception.
As Americans and lovers of liberty, you must exercise your birthright and strike down any proposals
to restrict the right to bear arms. Restricting this right is tarnishing the Constitution, which is the
central element of American government. This is why the importance of upholding the Second
Amendment cannot be emphasized enough. It provides the final line of

Theory Of Property Rights By Harold Demsetz
Theory of Property Rights By Harold Demsetz (UChicago)
The concept and role of property rights
It this first part, Demsetz offers a more theoretical foundation for the concepts he will use in the
following parts. The author starts defining the idea of property rights and differentiating how they
transmit the right to benefit or harm oneself or others. After, he links it with the recognition a close
relationship between property rights and externalities. The process of Internalizing such effects
refers to a change in property rights, that enables these effects to bear (in greater degree) on all
interacting persons. They become part of the economy.
The example of the military draft is used later to show how the costs of internalization have to be
higher to its gains. The lower the cost the greater the number of transactions and the degree to
which they take place.
Lastly, in this section, Demsetz defines the framework of his analysis, what would happen if
transaction costs of internalizing were zero? There are two main implications, on the first one he
states that the output mix is efficient for all players involved. Secondly, that the mix is independent
of who is assigned the ownership.

Utilitarianism is an ethical doctrine which states that people should produce the most happiness
or pleasure for everyone who is affected by those actions. The utilitarian view of justice proposes
an economic system which will benefit the society than any other system. Besides, the
proponents of this view also hold the opinion that steps should be taken to reduce great income
disparities that further polarize our society. Hence it is suggested that an egalitarian allocation
of income would increase the income of people who earn less which would eventually boost
total happiness (Shaw, 2005) The underlying fact that coffee farmers only get 10% of the profit
of each cup of coffee sold and millions of Ethiopians who rely on coffee trade as a source of
income and living under extreme poverty suggests that Starbucks did not practice what they preach
and should have taken a more holistic approach in helping coffee farmers in Ethiopia earning a
fairer share of income from the coffee trade.
Proponents of the broader view of corporate social responsibility stress that organizations are
integrated with the rest of the society and have a moral obligation to their stakeholders which
include employees, suppliers, customers, the community, and the society at large (Shaw, 2005).
Besides, proponents of human rights

Measuring the Cost of Living
Chapter 24
Measuring the Cost of Living
Introduction
1931 Year of Great Depression in the USA. But in spite of this fact some people contrived to
earn $80 000, it was famous baseball player Babe Ruth. Even the President Herberd Hoover had
a lesser salary of $75 000. When Ruth was asked if he thought it was right that his salary was
higher than President s he replied that he had a better year.
Year of 2007 describes a different picture. The average baseball player gets paid $4.8 million. We
consider the fact that the cost of living, products and services has grown in recent decades. But it
does not give us any explanation if Babe Ruth had a better standard of living than the average
baseball player now, because prices for goods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example one year pizza Margarita costs $10 and pizza Pepperoni costs $12, consumers will buy
more Margarita then Pepperoni. But the next year the price of pizza Margarita rises and
Pepperoni s price falls, in this way consumers will buy chipper pizza. But when computing CPI
the number of goods is fixed and in this way the index will show rise of the cost of living, but in
reality the increase is lower.
Introduction of new goods since consumer have the variety of goods to buy every dollar becomes
more valuable. In reality introduction of new goods causes a decrease of the cost of living, but
CPI overstates real changes in the cost of living.
Unmeasured quality change some types of goods and services improve their quality over time,
what increases its price. It is difficult to measure quality of the good or service that is why CPI is
overstated, because economists try to adjust the price to its quality.
The GDP Deflator versus the Consumer Price Index
Two measures of inflation the GDP Deflator and CPI are usually move together, as it is shown on
the graph (http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2008/08/variation on the gdpinflation chart/) below. The
GDP Deflator reflects goods and services produced within the country and CPI reflects goods and
services consumed within a country.
The CPI increases if price of any imported good rises, but it happens vice versa with GDP Deflator.
We can see it on the example of imported oil. When the price of oil raises the

Ain T Language Analysis
The word ain t is one of the most commonly overlooked mistake in the English dictionary. It is
used very often in TV, books, movies, media, and music, so we shouldn t be surprised it is now in
our real life. Even though our English teachers and grammar books label the word ain t as incorrect
the use of the word has not been banished just yet.
One writer on the topic, Linda Eve Diamond, starts off her article by asking her audience is it true
what they say, that ain t ain t a word (or at least a proper one)? And if it is, why is it so
unacceptable now when in the eighteenth century it was just as respectable as any other
contraction? (par 1). Some individuals believe the person who studies and writes about grammar
made a big mistake by banishing the word. However, everyone knows that ain t is not proper.
Diamond goes on to explain that, language, after all is always changing. In any century, and
generation or decade, we can always say that language ain t what it used to be. (par ... Show more

To clarify the distinction, consider the expression ain t. Unless used intentionally to add
colloquial flavor, ain t is unacceptable because its use is considered nonstandard. (par 2).
Colloquial tone is a language used in ordinary conversations, and in nothing formal. For
example, the word ain t can help advertisements by giving the title a catchy tone. It can also bring
comedy in a play or movie. Nordquist goes on to mention, ain t is used by many speakers in
certain fixed expressions and to convey a certain rhetorical effect. (par 4). Using ain t can help
persuade or influence some people. However, Nordquist says, As linguistic scholars have
frequently pointed out, it is unfortunate that ain t I? is unpopular in educated speech. (par 5). A few
teachers do not let their students use that word in essays, because it makes the essay seem

In Cold Blood Environment
The circumstances, environment, and events during an individual s life may have major effects on
that individual s personality traits and mindset. In many cases, the environmental factors of a
convicted criminal s life have led to the development of criminal minds and the eventual execution
of extremely serious felonies. Truman Capoteillustrates how a convict s background can influence a
criminal mind in his novel, In Cold Blood. In this nonfiction novel, Capote depicts how the
environment and events during the lives of infamous murderers Dick Hickock and Perry Smith
have led them to commit the crimeof killing Herbert Clutter and his family. Although very few

One of the most prominent questions is if Stapleton really died. They never found his body. I

The Orange Trees By Gustave Caillebotte
The first artwork made by Gustave Caillebotte is called The Orange Trees, the painting was

Trees, it was created with oil on canvas. The artwork was launched c. 1902 and is also currently

in a garden at the family villa. He painted his brother Martial, in a straw hat and purple slippers,
and their young cousin ZoГ«, dressed in striped chiffon and red boots to show a sense of
fashionable leisure. (MFAH). The style of the painting is impressionism because the artwork
shows the recreation of the view that the artist was trying to give an impression of. Martial,
Caillebotte s brother is sitting on a chair and appears to be larger than ZoГ« to emphasize that he
would be closer to us in the view of the artwork. Caillebotte s also uses curved lines to create the

shows that they are supposed to represent actual objects. The artwork to me appears to be

Tsunamis Essay
Environmental Science
Tsunamis
A tsunami (soo NAH mee) is a series of waves that occur in an ocean or other large body of water
and that are caused by some activity that displaces big amounts of water. Tsunami is the Japanese
word for quot;harbor wave. quot;
Earthquakes that occur on the seafloor or in coastal areas usually cause tsunamis.
The energy generated by the earthquake is transmitted through the water. In deep oceans the energy
in these seismic sea waves can travel virtually unnoticed because the wave height may be only
twelve inches. When this energy reaches the shallow waters of coastlines, bays, or harbors, it
forces the water into a giant wave. Some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fishermen twenty miles out to sea didn t notice the wave pass under their boats because it only had
a height at the time of about fifteen inches. They were totally unprepared for the devastation that
awaited them when they returned to the port of
Sanriku. Twenty eight thousand people were killed and 170 miles of coastline were destroyed by
the wave that had passed under them.
Tsunamis in deep water can have a wavelength greater than 300 miles (500
2)
kilometers) and a period of about an hour. This is very different from the normal
California tube, which generally has a wavelength of about 300 feet (100 meters) and a time of
about ten seconds. (The period of a wave is the time between two successive waves.) Tsunamis are
shallow water waves, which means that the ratio between water depth and wavelength is very
small. These shallow water waves move at a speed equal to the square root of the product of the
acceleration of gravity (9.8m/s/s) and the water depth.
The deeper the water, the faster and shorter the wave is. For example, when the ocean is
20,000 feet deep, a tsunami travels at 550 miles per hour. At this speed, the wave can compete with
a jet airplane, traveling across the ocean in less than a day.
Another important factor in considering tsunamis is the rate at which they lose energy. Because a
wave loses energy at a rate inversely related to its

I conducted 5 one on one interviews with students who have completed their first year in college.
The idea was to find out how well they were prepared for the financial decisions that would be put

The first topic was preparedness. I asked if there was anyone who trained them about finances or

nowhere else. An interesting fact was that the majority learned their skills from their mothers.
Next they were asked a question that was similar to the survey in the aspect of what are some

Compare And Contrast Rainforests And Mangroves
Rainforests and Mangroves hold very vital roles in our ecosystems, in which this essay is
comparing the two. Mangroves cultural significance towards Brisbane are strongly linked to the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of Australia. They have provided food, shelter,
medicine and many other resources to the land owners for over 40,000 years. They are also
important to Brisbane s natural environmentbecause they are immensely productive ecosystems in
which they provide various resources and services, for instance they protect shorelines from
erosion. Brisbane rainforests hold significant cultural value, alike to that of the mangroves, to the
Aborigines, in which they ve supply medicine and vast amounts of foods. Rainforests are a vital
stabilizer for the Earth s climate, along with maintaining the water cycles.
Biotic factors are found in every ecosystem, interacting together to survive. Herons (or the common
egret) inhabit mangrove swamps, and are found in most parts of the world. They can usually be
found by mangrove tree roots, feeding mainly on frogs, fish, small mammals and occasionally
small insects and reptiles. In contrast, the Umbrella Cockatoo s who are rainforest dwellers, they

Gerard Way Research Paper
You are probably wondering how is a singer from a rock band inspiring? Maybe you don t think
he is, but to me, Gerard is very inspiring. Gerard Way never gave up in life, no matter what
problems were thrown at him, and the struggles he had to face. Gerard and some others started a
band, My Chemical Romance, to help cope with their pain. He also never gave up on his dreams,
no matter how hard or difficult.
Gerard Way faced lots of challenges growing up and as an adult. As a teenager Gerard was
bullied and it was very hard for him to handle it. As a teenager he was held at gunpoint execution
style, he struggled a ton with this. Yet somehow he still had a positive attitude saying no matter
how ugly the world gets or how stupid it shows me it is, I always have faith [in it] . On top of all of
that Gerard faced serious drug abuse, depression, and an alcohol addiction. Gerard s grandmother,

language change throughout the text? and How does the author s narrative writing or the
character s language vary by time, place and purpose? (96). Devereaux explained in his article
that code switching offers a perfect way to discuss language ideologies. By exploring languages
shift, we can see that the place differs, the people differ , and the purpose changes either in the
community or at a job. The author argued that these aspects such as place, people, and purpose, all
affect the speaker or author choices. The author showed a great example about code switching and
how your language differs from one person to the other. For example, you may decide that you
want to tell your best friend and your teacher about your weekend. The author explained the

Cognitive Vs Exercise
Research shows that integrating exercise or meditation in one s life can result in tremendous
benefits both physically and mentally, including improving one s cognitive abilities. Cognition can
be defined as the capacity to perceive, retain, and apply information that has been learned through

Meditation and exercisecan boost an individual s blood hormone levels, which can improve

It does not take much to look around and see how much medicine has developed over the years.
Scenarios involving certain illnesses that at sometime in the past seemed to be hopeless have
been studied and treatments carefully developed. Many medical discoveries have been made,
and many are the lives that have been spared because of such. On the other hand, however, it is
undeniable that there are many forms of physical disorder that still cannot be fully explained by

fighting against a terminal illness and make known the opinion of patients who are the main target
of any decision made over this issue. A young female patient sufferingfrom chronic obstructive
lung disease emphasized her desire to be in control of her own life and be given the right to choose
death over life. She said, I

Essay on Enzymes
Enzymes Enzymes are catalysts. Most are proteins. (A few ribonucleoprotein enzymes have been
discovered and, for some of these, the catalytic activity is in the RNA part rather than the protein
part. Link to discussion of these ribozymes.)
Enzymes bind temporarily to one or more of the reactants of the reaction they catalyze. In doing so,
they lower the amount of activation energy needed and thus speed up the reaction. Most of these
interactions are weak and especially so if the atoms involved are farther than about one angstrom
from each other. So successful binding of enzyme and substrate ... Show more content on

This is because the structure of malonic acid allows it to bind to the same site on the enzyme (b).
But there is no oxidation so no speedy release of products. The inhibition is called competitive
because if you increase the ratio of succinic to malonic acid in the mixture, you will gradually
restore the rate of catalysis. At a 50:1 ratio, the two molecules compete on roughly equal terms for
the binding (=catalytic) site on the enzyme.
Factors Affecting Enzyme Action
[IMAGE]The activity of enzymes is strongly affected by changes in pH and temperature. Each
enzyme works best at a certain pH (left graph) and temperature (right graph), its activity decreasing
at values above and below that point. This is not surprising considering the importance of
* tertiary structure (i.e. shape) in enzyme function and
* noncovalent forces, e.g., ionic interactions and hydrogen bonds, in determining that shape.
Examples:
* the protease pepsin works best as a pH of 1 2 (found in the stomach) while
* the protease trypsin is inactive at such a low pH but very active at a pH of 8 (found in the small
intestine as the bicarbonate of the pancreatic fluid neutralizes the arriving stomach contents). [
Discussion]
Changes in pH alter the state of ionization of charged amino acids (e.g., Asp, Lys) that may

Comparing John Cheever s The Swimmer and The Five Forty Eight
Two stories by John Cheever, The Swimmer and The Five Forty Eight (5 48), will be explored in
terms of how the characters, genre and point of view in these stories give rise to classic fiction.
The Swimmer is of a suburban man, Neddy Merrill, who decides to return home from work by
swimming eight miles through all of his neighbors pools along the way. At each pool he encounters
a former mistress, distant and unfriendly neighbours and other symbols of a bitter, frustrated life.
To Neddy, this is his epic day s journey. However, when he arrives home, his family has left him.
The swimmer has made it home; but too much has changed.
While 5 48 is about the protagonist, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Countless references to Ned s dependence on alcohol as a pick up , an affair with Shirley Adams
and in the end he loses everything his home, family and possessions; making Swimmer a poignant
masterpiece. Here, unlike 5 48 where the emphasis is on clear character development, Neddy
recounts his entire life in just a short time while swimming. Both stories are told in a third person,
male point of view narrative; Blake being followed, his relationships with his neighbours who are
in 5 48, firing Dent, while in Swimmer it is also similar as we discover how Neddy life has
revolved.
Another significance is the way Cheever uses vivid details to add colour, variety to the plot and
theme. This is highlighted eloquently in both 5 48 (e.g. Mrs. Compton fleeting smile and then
goes on to explain why it is fleeting and his adverse relationship with her) and Swimmer (e.g. the
naked Hallorans and their dark water had depressed him even though they were friends , implying
that Ned s relationships were superficial).
While similarities are abound in both stories the way the main male characters are portrayed
accurately tell the themes of each story. Blake is shown to be the incorrigible character cheating
on his wife many times and preying on weak women and displaying contempt for those who
merely broke sumptuary laws (e.g Mr Watkins wearing his corduroy jacket ). Similarly Dent is the
victim and she triumphs by gaining revenge on Blake, when she forces him to the

Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Analysis
In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it is clear that the biggest theme of the story is
the concept of good against evil. In the case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the conflict exists within
the same person. It is generally believed that this internal struggle exists in everyone, and that man
is not truly one, but truly two. It suggests that everyone has a dual personality , and a good and evil
side exists in everyone. The struggle supposedly is usually a close fought battle that is close to a
stalemate. But in the story, is there a clear winner of this internal battle? Does Mr. Hyde
completely take over or does Dr. Jekyll ultimately resolve the situation? The battle is very tight, and
there is, in fact, a clear winner in the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Blackmail I suppose; an honest man paying through the nose for some of the capers of his
youth. Black Mail House is what I call the place with the door, in consequence. Though even that,
you know, is far from explaining all, he added, and with the words fell into a vein of musing. (pg.
8). Even before we see Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, their characters (and thus the conflict between
good and evil) is already developed. As the story moves on, we can see how evil starts to edge
forward in the battle of good vs evil. Of course, it does not become the clear winner yet, but there
are signs of how Robert Louis Stephenson tries to show that evil is overpowering in the soul.
For example, when Mr. Utterson starts feeling bad for Jekyll, his friend, and And the lawyer set
out homeward with a very heavy heart. Poor Harry Jekyll, he thought, my mind misgives me he
is in deep waters! He was wild when he was young; a long while ago to be sure; but in the law of
God, there is no statute of limitations. Ay, it must be that; the ghost of some old sin, the cancer
of some concealed disgrace: punishment coming, PEDE CLAUDO, years after memory has
forgotten and self love condoned the fault. And the lawyer, scared by the thought, brooded
awhile on his own past, groping in all the corners of memory, least by chance some Jack in the Box
of an old iniquity should leap to light there. His past was fairly blameless; few men could read the
rolls of their

Reckless Driving Habits
Many of Today s Drivers have Dangerous HabitsIntroduction:In this modern era, the number of
road accidents has increased significantly. Reckless driving habits causes majority of these
accidents. Many of today s drivers have dangerous driving habits. In our day to day lives, you
will ultimately cross paths with a careless driver. Some people survive these ordeals while others
do not. Reckless driving can be seen all the time. These drivers do not only put their lives in
danger but also the lives of other innocent people. Valuable property has been destroyed in the
hands of irresponsible drivers. To improve our driving it is essential to acknowledge some
common dangerous habits practiced by drivers.Discussion:The most common dangerous habit is
driving under the influence of alcohol. In my opinion, this is the greatest offence. People with this
tendency should recognize that they put other in jeopardy. While driving it is important to be
attentive, alcohol makes this impossible (Wanberg et al 17). Another bad habit to consider is
eating while driving. Most of the time the driver is distracted while eating. For example, a driver
spills ketchup on their clothes and then cleans it up. These few seconds taken away from the roadis
enough for one to be involved in an accident. With the recent development mobile phones,
everyone wants to receive and make calls while driving, text and read messages. A driver who is
receiving a call or texting will take their eyes off the road. As an

  • 2. Swedish Food In Northern Europe So what exactly is Swedish food? Many may think of fish and Swedish meatballs. Scandinavia is a part of Northern Europe surrounded by the Baltic Sea; this includes Sweden, Finland, and Norway. Knowing the history of the region explains a lot about the foods that still exist there today. Vikings who inhabited the area were some of the first people to develop food preservation methods. By salting, dehydrating, and curing the fruits, vegetables, meats, and fish, the warriors were able to spend less time hunting and gathering, and more time invading territories as far south as the Mediterranean. Since they traveled so far, cooking influences from all over Europe are still apparent in the modern Swedish diet. This includes German pastries, French soups, and English teas.... This entirely describes the usual Christmas with my family. Traditionally, a smГ¶rgГҐsbord would consist of different types of fish like smoked salmon, herring, and lutefisk (reserved for Christmas only), meats such as beef and even moose, vegetables, new potatoes, and of course, breads and cheeses. During lunch, it is common to see smГ¶rgГҐstГҐrta on this table also. SmГ¶rgГҐstГҐrta literally translates to sandwich cake, which is exactly what it is. This is a double layer cake (made with three large, round pieces of bread) filled with everything a sandwich might have in it. This might be a little lazy, but they definitely know how to feed a ... • 3. Racism In John Updike s Rabbit Run And Rabbit Redwell John Updike has written many novels. One of his most famous series is called Rabbit Omnibus. John Updike is known for his famous character in the Rabbit Omnibus books called Harry. John Updike s books called Rabbit Run and Rabbit Redux shows us racism, theme, and character change. First, in Rabbit Run and Rabbit Redux we see racism. In Rabbit Redux , it says, Now here s how. You is a Big Black man sittin right there. You is chained to the chained to that chair. And I is white as snow (296). This quote in the story shows how they like to play games involving slavery. Racism is a big issue in both books. Readers can see this throughout the books with the different characters. The quote is one character talking to the other. Another quote showing racism in Rabbit Redux is I don t follow this racist rap, you can t turn on television now without black face spitting at you (47). In the book several times we see Rabbit saying there are too many blacks. The racism is not as bad in Rabbit Redux as in Rabbit Run . Between the two books, readers can see different sides of John Updike s writing styles. In one book, he uses harsher words and more racist words than the other book. From migration, to the development of producing goods as a way of bartering, to an eventual governed society, the modernization of Hawaii has an illustrious history. The people who impacted this and were part of creating a globalized look at Hawaiiplayed a part into modernization the state. This paper will illustrate the modernization of this land and its westernization throughout the years. The modern origins of these islands start not from the migration of the Asian people from other various islands, but with the discovery by an Englishmen named Captain Cook. With his ship, The Resolution, as well as The Discovery; Cook stumbles upon the islands of Kauai and Oahu on January 18, 1778. The exchange of goods amongst the native Hawaiians showed promise, but this barter and friendly spirit did not last; as on his second visit to the islands in 1779 was unfortunate timing which led to his death . Following Cook s death there was a period of migration to the Hawaiian Islands which started when some of the crew from Cook s ships decided to stay behind. The movement of trade to the Hawaiian Islands created a rift between the native people, and the foreigners. As fur trade in China became such a big industry, Hawaii became stopping ground or port for these trade ships. This eventually led to an increase in the amount of foreigners, making up majority of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tim Winton The Turning Summary Masculinity, the attributes applied to the male gender, has continuously manifested itself within the matrices of literature, with many writers using narrative fiction as a vehicle to explore ideas of the historical underpinnings of manhood, and more generally, alternative constructions of the male ontology and modality. Transcendental notions of masculinityhave inevitably constrained the contemporary manwithin set ideologies and values those which often enforce unrealistic and toxic expectations. This conundrum is especially relevant in Australian society given the stereotypical and diffused archetype of the Aussie Man ; which characteristics such as apathy, nobility and strength forming the bedrock of the national identity. Throughout history love has been a favoured theme with many poets in their writing. Carol Ann Duffy, (born 1958) tackles the issue of lovein her poem Valentine, as does Percy Bysshe Shelly (1792 1822) in the poem Love s Philosophy, and finally Robert Burns (1759 1796) considers the topic in A Red Red Rose. These aspects contribute to the poem giving an overall impression that love is everlasting and also holds the world together in a unifying way. These previous images also enforce Burns message that love lasts, survives and can be relied on. Burns suggests love will last till a the seas gang dry. This is physically impossible and through this Burns is suggesting that love is so powerful that it can defy the laws of physics. Through this Burns also implies that love can surmount boundaries of space and time, the seas gang dry . This finally enforces that love is an enduring power and will never fade. The title A Red Red Rose further implements Burns messages that the course of true love does run smoothly. The red rose is a typical symbol of love and therefore Burns is suggesting, perhaps naively, that love is a clear and simple path to follow in life. The title also suggests that Burns feels love should be celebrated and life should be lived to the full. The title also alerts the reader to the fact that Burns is addressing the traditional aspects of love. The poem has a regular structure throughout and strong rhyme. Burns has written the poem in this way in an attempt to portray love as a strong force, which can be depended on. Burns has also included alternate line rhyme throughout the poem. This ... Gun Control Laws Limit Violent Crime Founding Father Benjamin Franklin once said that, Those who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. The great American republic was founded on the principle of liberty for all. The Bill of Rights, which is a pillar of US democracy, clearly stipulates that all citizens have the right to bear arms. It is senseless to sacrifice this fundamental right for a false illusion of safety. We can reference previous periods of history in which the government placed restrictions on products and examine how ineffective they were. Furthermore, we can look at the absence of a correlation between strict gun control measures and reducing violent crimerates in US states. It is time to ensure that our Constitution is upheld to protect the ideals of American democracy. The proposal of restricting US citizens from purchasing firearms is invalid because they are protected to do so under the Constitution, strict government regulations on other harmful products have not been effective in the past, and the idea that gun control laws limit violent crimeis a misconception. As Americans and lovers of liberty, you must exercise your birthright and strike down any proposals to restrict the right to bear arms. Theory Of Property Rights By Harold Demsetz Theory of Property Rights By Harold Demsetz (UChicago) The concept and role of property rights It this first part, Demsetz offers a more theoretical foundation for the concepts he will use in the following parts. The author starts defining the idea of property rights and differentiating how they transmit the right to benefit or harm oneself or others. After, he links it with the recognition a close relationship between property rights and externalities. The process of Internalizing such effects refers to a change in property rights, that enables these effects to bear (in greater degree) on all interacting persons. They become part of the economy. The example of the military draft is used later to show how the costs of internalization have to be higher to its gains. The lower the cost the greater the number of transactions and the degree to which they take place. Lastly, in this section, Demsetz defines the framework of his analysis, what would happen if transaction costs of internalizing were zero? • 28. Tsunamis Essay Environmental Science Tsunamis A tsunami (soo NAH mee) is a series of waves that occur in an ocean or other large body of water and that are caused by some activity that displaces big amounts of water. Tsunami is the Japanese word for quot;harbor wave. quot; Earthquakes that occur on the seafloor or in coastal areas usually cause tsunamis. The energy generated by the earthquake is transmitted through the water. In deep oceans the energy in these seismic sea waves can travel virtually unnoticed because the wave height may be only twelve inches. When this energy reaches the shallow waters of coastlines, bays, or harbors, it forces the water into a giant wave. Some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fishermen twenty miles out to sea didn t notice the wave pass under their boats because it only had a height at the time of about fifteen inches. They were totally unprepared for the devastation that awaited them when they returned to the port of Sanriku. Twenty eight thousand people were killed and 170 miles of coastline were destroyed by the wave that had passed under them. Tsunamis in deep water can have a wavelength greater than 300 miles (500 2) kilometers) and a period of about an hour. This is very different from the normal California tube, which generally has a wavelength of about 300 feet (100 meters) and a time of about ten seconds. (The period of a wave is the time between two successive waves.) Tsunamis are shallow water waves, which means that the ratio between water depth and wavelength is very small. These shallow water waves move at a speed equal to the square root of the product of the acceleration of gravity (9.8m/s/s) and the water depth. The deeper the water, the faster and shorter the wave is. For example, when the ocean is 20,000 feet deep, a tsunami travels at 550 miles per hour. At this speed, the wave can compete with a jet airplane, traveling across the ocean in less than a day. Another important factor in considering tsunamis is the rate at which they lose energy. Comparing John Cheever s The Swimmer and The Five Forty Eight Two stories by John Cheever, The Swimmer and The Five Forty Eight (5 48), will be explored in terms of how the characters, genre and point of view in these stories give rise to classic fiction. At each pool he encounters a former mistress, distant and unfriendly neighbours and other symbols of a bitter, frustrated life. To Neddy, this is his epic day s journey. Both stories are told in a third person, male point of view narrative; Blake being followed, his relationships with his neighbours who are in 5 48, firing Dent, while in Swimmer it is also similar as we discover how Neddy life has revolved. Another significance is the way Cheever uses vivid details to add colour, variety to the plot and theme. This is highlighted eloquently in both 5 48 (e.g. Mrs. Compton fleeting smile and then goes on to explain why it is fleeting and his adverse relationship with her) and Swimmer (e.g. the naked Hallorans and their dark water had depressed him even though they were friends , implying that Ned s relationships were superficial). While similarities are abound in both stories the way the main male characters are portrayed accurately tell the themes of each story. Blake is shown to be the incorrigible character cheating on his wife many times and preying on weak women and displaying contempt for those who merely broke sumptuary laws (e.g Mr Watkins wearing his corduroy jacket ).
